- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome back to artists on artists on artists on artists
- 0:07Speaker 1: this week.
- 0:08Speaker 2: To be or not to be? That is the question
- 0:10Speaker 2: and the answer to be. Actors of Shakespeare.
- 0:15Speaker 3: William Shakespeare changed the world with his monumentous plays and poems,
- 0:20Speaker 3: and now in the modern age, people do these plays
- 0:24Speaker 3: and poems for audiences. Today we'll be sitting down with
- 0:27Speaker 3: a troop of Shakespeare theater actors and seeing what goes
- 0:33Speaker 3: into cooking a Shakespeare play.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Now, gather around in fair Verona, where we lay our
- 0:40Speaker 4: scene and listen in.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Okay, well, goodmorrow, cousins, our cousinsorrow, cousin.
- 0:52Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 3: It's crazy to be on a microphone because usually we're
- 0:57Speaker 3: in the amphitheater and it's just projecting like crazy.
- 1:00Speaker 7: I don't know if I need it right, just send
- 1:03Speaker 7: it to the back you need it.
- 1:11Speaker 8: I'm being like Richard the Third.
- 1:15Speaker 1: That my country for a horse.
- 1:20Speaker 9: This is I've never done anything like this behind.
- 1:25Speaker 6: The sea as well.
- 1:26Speaker 5: I mean, we can imagine as if this camera is
- 1:29Speaker 5: sort of a fourth wall, right, It's it's the fourth
- 1:33Speaker 5: wall that we soliloquy to or monologue without knowing of
- 1:38Speaker 5: on the theater.
- 1:39Speaker 3: It's such a good way to think about it. It's
- 1:41Speaker 3: such a good.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Way to I mean, you know, we say all the
- 1:43Speaker 2: world is a stage. I mean William said that, but
- 1:45Speaker 2: but we're sitting on a stage, and and and I
- 1:47Speaker 2: just wanted to take a minute and feel it.
- 1:51Speaker 10: What if all the world were just right here right now?
- 1:57Speaker 4: I think about it a lot. If he was here
- 2:00Speaker 4: these days, he would say all the world is almost
- 2:03Speaker 4: sometimes a podcast.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I think he'd say.
- 2:06Speaker 5: I think he'd say that about podcasts as well. I
- 2:09Speaker 5: think that podcasts are the new stage.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Would he say the whole podcast is a stage or
- 2:14Speaker 3: the whole stage is a podcast.
- 2:15Speaker 4: I see that thy thy lays the rub.
- 2:20Speaker 1: There's the I lay the Shakespeare.
- 2:27Speaker 11: Thy lay us the rub.
- 2:28Speaker 4: But it's good to fill the floor, yea, so good.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Not a trap in here. Couldn't do a trap door
- 2:36Speaker 1: show here, No.
- 2:37Speaker 6: You couldn't do it.
- 2:38Speaker 8: You couldn't do a rise from Hades.
- 2:42Speaker 9: There's no turn here. Can't turn, you can't can't walk
- 2:45Speaker 9: through Verona.
- 2:46Speaker 1: We're doing we're not doing a wheel.
- 2:49Speaker 4: It's so funny when they did Hamilton and everyone was like, wow,
- 2:52Speaker 4: they're doing the round robin.
- 2:53Speaker 9: I went, I have never seen Winter's Tail.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Where do you think Manuel learned it from Come on.
- 3:00Speaker 1: They're not talking about that. You know.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I see Hamilton and I want people to go. You know,
- 3:04Speaker 2: Shakespeare did this first.
- 3:05Speaker 5: No Lin, Manuel borrows from the Bard. SpongeBob borrows from
- 3:09Speaker 5: the Bard Friends, the TV show borrows from the bar,
- 3:14Speaker 5: borrowing from the bar exactly, borrows from the bar.
- 3:17Speaker 3: We should we go around and introduces.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yeah for sure, I mean I would love that.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Yeah, perfect, Okay.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Well, my eyes are vernon because you're looking at me.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I am good, good to see everybody. My name is
- 3:31Speaker 2: Cedric Busket and I am the.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Director of the Mary Fools.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I'm Sedric Busket of the Mary Fools.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And I'm brutely. We go along our little song that
- 3:47Speaker 1: we sing.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I teach Shakespeare at the University of Arkansas, and uh,
- 3:53Speaker 2: you know, in my spare time, I run this group,
- 3:54Speaker 2: run this company. And it's funny because we've been doing
- 3:57Speaker 2: so much stuff and been doing so well. I'm about
- 3:59Speaker 2: to transition and doing this my whole life. Like it's
- 4:02Speaker 2: so exciting. I can't believe Shakespeare is paying some of
- 4:05Speaker 2: my bills. You know, It's it's really really, really cool.
- 4:08Speaker 9: The text is informing your living.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know an, you know, we were known
- 4:13Speaker 2: for doing Shakespeare plays that are in completely different things.
- 4:16Speaker 2: You know, we did Julius Caesar. That was a cast
- 4:20Speaker 2: of all women, and it was really exciting.
- 4:24Speaker 11: A weird way to look at such a weird thing.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I know, and y'all fought me on it.
- 4:30Speaker 11: We really did.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I want it to be You all said this didn't
- 4:34Speaker 1: make sense. You wanted to be in it. We all
- 4:36Speaker 1: want to be in it.
- 4:37Speaker 5: I you are such a fearless leader though, and I
- 4:40Speaker 5: you know, I don't always understand initially when you pitch them,
- 4:44Speaker 5: but then when you see the vision, it makes so
- 4:46Speaker 5: much sense. Hamlet in a Mall was the most groundbreaking
- 4:51Speaker 5: adaptation of that show.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I changed the text to me or not to me?
- 4:55Speaker 1: You know that suitcase store to me.
- 4:57Speaker 11: To me exactly.
- 4:58Speaker 3: It was brilliant, classic dramatic moment, got a big laught,
- 5:04Speaker 3: a big laugh to get a suitcase, not to get
- 5:06Speaker 3: a suitcase.
- 5:07Speaker 8: That's the question, Cedric, I have to say it.
- 5:10Speaker 10: I don't know if anyone has given you enough credit
- 5:13Speaker 10: for making Ophelia a hot topic employee.
- 5:16Speaker 5: Oh, I agree, that was round break an understanding of
- 5:21Speaker 5: her story.
- 5:22Speaker 2: It was interesting, you know, she's dressed like Sally from
- 5:24Speaker 2: Midsummer Night's Dream or Sally from Nightmare Before Christ.
- 5:27Speaker 8: Look what you did?
- 5:30Speaker 1: What you did?
- 5:31Speaker 4: The Grave Digger as the Mall janitor inspired work inspired.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Those of Guildenstern cops on segues. Really fun stuff.
- 5:42Speaker 8: Hilarious.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it was hilarious. It was the funniest handlet they'd
- 5:44Speaker 2: ever done the mall.
- 5:47Speaker 12: Yeah, the mall funny hamlets singing othellos you are.
- 5:54Speaker 9: You look at something and you twisted inside out.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I mean it's important to do that, but how could
- 5:58Speaker 2: I do that without this reddible company.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I mean, y y'all blow my mind every time we
- 6:04Speaker 1: do stuff. Why do it?
- 6:07Speaker 2: You know, we're adapting these incredible words together, and you
- 6:11Speaker 2: guys bring new life into these seven hundred year old words.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Before we blow past it. I mean, your queer reimagining
- 6:19Speaker 3: of Merchant of Venice was half higher eyes hath not
- 6:25Speaker 3: queer face.
- 6:26Speaker 2: You know what's so funny is there's a lot of
- 6:28Speaker 2: a lot of criticism about Shylock, and turning him gay
- 6:32Speaker 2: causes more criticism. And actually they thought they're semtic. Now
- 6:35Speaker 2: it's homophobic. That's what's the issue with Schilock. Shylock is
- 6:40Speaker 2: a problem. It turns out you can't fix him.
- 6:43Speaker 10: No, Shylock, to their point, is a bit of a
- 6:47Speaker 10: sex pest in in your.
- 6:50Speaker 5: The Poppers ballet, The Poppers ballet, In the Poppers Ballet.
- 6:55Speaker 11: I still remember those moves.
- 6:56Speaker 6: Who who?
- 7:00Speaker 1: But y'all have to understand.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I have an eleven year old son, and I swear
- 7:03Speaker 2: to God he's about to come out. I can tell,
- 7:05Speaker 2: you can tell. So I have to be ready for him.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I ready this world for him. I swear to God.
- 7:12Speaker 3: So good.
- 7:13Speaker 2: And you're not forcing him that way, No I'm not.
- 7:15Speaker 2: But I just know it's coming, you know. And oh
- 7:19Speaker 2: he's in football. Yeah, he's got a girlfriend.
- 7:21Speaker 1: But I swear to God he starts coming.
- 7:23Speaker 10: Cedric, speaking of Troy, I have to say, I get
- 7:27Speaker 10: so much pleasure of cry.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Don't cry.
- 7:31Speaker 13: Oh I'm going to when you send us receipts, when
- 7:36Speaker 13: you when you buy Troy's new school clothes, or you
- 7:40Speaker 13: go and you get your groceries and you ride at
- 7:43Speaker 13: the bottom of it, and you say paid for by
- 7:45Speaker 13: Shakespeare and you send us.
- 7:48Speaker 8: I just it means the world.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I mean, Shakespeare's paying for his food, Shakespeare's pay for
- 7:53Speaker 2: his clothes, and.
- 7:54Speaker 8: You never thought this would happen.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Wild think i'd be support my friend with Shakespeare, you know,
- 8:03Speaker 2: like you come up. I'm teaching at a universal Arkans.
- 8:05Speaker 2: All the kids are screaming at me. Oh, this isn't relevant,
- 8:08Speaker 2: this doesn't make sense. And now I'm like, it is relevant.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Take a look. Take a look.
- 8:12Speaker 2: My son is eating at you know, Ruby Tuesdays with me,
- 8:16Speaker 2: and William Shakespeare himself is behind the endless bucket of fries.
- 8:19Speaker 4: What makes the text more relevant than putting that character
- 8:22Speaker 4: on a segue and then they're saying the text right suddenly.
- 8:25Speaker 4: I mean, we do a lot of school assemblies and
- 8:27Speaker 4: we'll get into that, but suddenly the way kids will
- 8:29Speaker 4: perk up, right, it's just it's alive. The text is alive,
- 8:33Speaker 4: and it moves, and it moves to the year you're in.
- 8:35Speaker 4: If you are bold enough to take it there.
- 8:37Speaker 1: You have to, I mean, y'all have to introduce yourself.
- 8:43Speaker 2: That they get to meet y'all, Like, I'm so lucky,
- 8:45Speaker 2: I wish I could meet y'all again.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Well, Hello, my name is Richard LeFleur. I am from Phoenix, Arizona.
- 8:55Speaker 3: The accent is an affectation, so.
- 8:58Speaker 14: I can really feel what it feels to be Shakespearean
- 9:03Speaker 14: in the moment fifteen ninety two.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Oh, it's a lot of fun. It's a lot of fun.
- 9:11Speaker 3: What else can I say?
- 9:12Speaker 1: I can talk about your favorite roles.
- 9:14Speaker 3: I play the role given to me. I bring the
- 9:19Speaker 3: life that is needed to come through me. My biggest
- 9:23Speaker 3: roles has been the ghost of the King in Hamlet,
- 9:30Speaker 3: the the the town pauper in a Fellow.
- 9:36Speaker 8: Not Popper, put you in there, more stuff.
- 9:45Speaker 1: We have to introduce. In Twelfth Night, I was the.
- 9:47Speaker 3: God and you just really, you know, you give me
- 9:51Speaker 3: these roles that I can sink my teeth into, and
- 9:54Speaker 3: I'm hoping soon it'll be a bigger one.
- 9:58Speaker 4: I love that every play we do, you always add
- 10:00Speaker 4: a gargoyle to the scene and you come out there
- 10:03Speaker 4: and you stand at the edge of the stage, look at.
- 10:06Speaker 3: That, hoping for a line, hoping, but you just.
- 10:08Speaker 9: Sit out there and it takes Look at that.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I mean, I always got room for the floor. I
- 10:12Speaker 2: always got room for him. And I say, we'll get
- 10:15Speaker 2: you in there. You know, we'll get you in there,
- 10:16Speaker 2: even if you're a gargoyle. Again, we'red about the costume,
- 10:19Speaker 2: so it's so easy to put you back in. And
- 10:21Speaker 2: so many of these places can have gargoyles. They're in buildings.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Yes, you can really put a gogo oyle anywhere. But
- 10:28Speaker 3: I'm just so happy to be a part of this
- 10:30Speaker 3: company and a part of these fronts.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Oh, we got to talk about those pastries you bring us.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Oh please, the pastries, misters pant.
- 10:48Speaker 9: I know we all love them. It just it just
- 10:51Speaker 9: it just says Kirkling on it. And I don't know
- 10:53Speaker 9: why it says the whole company is the sticker coming from.
- 11:02Speaker 11: Sure, he makes them, right, I make them.
- 11:05Speaker 3: You re use containers, right, I reuse the containers, and
- 11:09Speaker 3: I love a brand, so I remake them.
- 11:12Speaker 5: And every morning I gosh, well they are delicious, and
- 11:15Speaker 5: get me, I compliment.
- 11:16Speaker 11: You're so impressively consistent.
- 11:18Speaker 5: They taste the exact same way.
- 11:23Speaker 6: I don't.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Okay, Yes, we love to laugh.
- 11:26Speaker 9: Sure, because if you bought them, there wouldn't be anything
- 11:30Speaker 9: to hide.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I like them. I don't want to them.
- 11:33Speaker 6: I made them. The floors.
- 11:49Speaker 11: It's morning like morning.
- 11:53Speaker 9: Oh, it's morning morning, good Morrow, sir, good.
- 11:58Speaker 14: Hi.
- 11:58Speaker 9: I'm tip tip tip tip.
- 12:02Speaker 6: Oh, it's tip tip tip tip.
- 12:05Speaker 9: Tipt my nickname, I'm Titania Flower Tip Tip tip.
- 12:09Speaker 14: Tip seems like flower foolsome tip tip for sure, flower
- 12:17Speaker 14: fulsome flower not flour.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Yeah, just putting that together. How similar though it looks
- 12:23Speaker 3: like you said flower then added something else.
- 12:25Speaker 2: But I mean imagine, I mean, imagine having a name
- 12:27Speaker 2: like Titania Flower, not doing Shakespeare and you know, marrying
- 12:30Speaker 2: someone named fulsome on.
- 12:32Speaker 1: But but it's so beautiful.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Flower fulsome and I have I'm just I'm I'm a
- 12:40Speaker 4: physical actor, or say that I love the bar. I've
- 12:46Speaker 4: been doing this for what, let's see, since I was
- 12:50Speaker 4: a child.
- 12:52Speaker 9: I love.
- 12:52Speaker 2: I mean, I first worked with you years ago as Puck.
- 12:55Speaker 2: You were my first Puck, and I said, oh my gosh,
- 12:58Speaker 2: this Titania Flower is absolutely.
- 13:02Speaker 1: She's got something so agile.
- 13:06Speaker 2: And you know, I love casting a real child that's
- 13:08Speaker 2: fucking not a little adult because it just really changed everything.
- 13:12Speaker 4: And I think when I was thirteen playing Puck, those
- 13:14Speaker 4: words changed me, and I think ever since then, it
- 13:17Speaker 4: was like, okay, I'm this direction set you know what I.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Mean, Once you find it, grab it.
- 13:24Speaker 10: Tip tip, the way you would hit those mini tramps
- 13:27Speaker 10: off stage and just come flying in like some sort
- 13:30Speaker 10: of little dragonfly bullet.
- 13:34Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 13:35Speaker 9: I mean believe.
- 13:37Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 13:37Speaker 9: I do heavily rely on the fly the fly system.
- 13:42Speaker 9: I love it.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Yeah, you've kind of attached to it, you know. I
- 13:45Speaker 1: just think it.
- 13:46Speaker 9: Makes the words jump right.
- 13:48Speaker 8: You use it for almost every production you're in.
- 13:50Speaker 9: I try to, I try to pitch it.
- 13:51Speaker 2: At least you do pitch it a lot. It was
- 13:54Speaker 2: it was a little bit weird in Macbeth when you
- 13:57Speaker 2: play very and we can talk about it.
- 14:00Speaker 4: I mean, I think sheesus grieving, right, and what is
- 14:05Speaker 4: grieving but not flying my hands?
- 14:08Speaker 3: Look at my hands?
- 14:09Speaker 2: I was.
- 14:13Speaker 5: And I wanted to sing too outtime Spot looked honestly
- 14:16Speaker 5: kind of fun. The way you were running around like
- 14:19Speaker 5: having this guy.
- 14:20Speaker 2: My my son watched it and said it was giving
- 14:24Speaker 2: frum Asserah from Troy. You come out, you're saying it's
- 14:29Speaker 2: given from Massarah. I know you play football, but you're
- 14:30Speaker 2: about to be gay. You're talking about Faither on the
- 14:32Speaker 2: roof for eleven years old.
- 14:33Speaker 9: You're about to you're about.
- 14:34Speaker 1: To beget about to be gay, off to be gay.
- 14:36Speaker 9: You just said that you're about to be gay.
- 14:38Speaker 1: You're about to be gay. I'll tell you what.
- 14:39Speaker 9: I love you all so much. I'm so grateful and
- 14:41Speaker 9: I wouldn't. I wouldn't go back to school if.
- 14:44Speaker 3: I wanted to.
- 14:47Speaker 9: I wouldn't try to have a early twenties if I dared.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Can I say something about the roles? You bring a
- 14:54Speaker 3: certain life to them that I just find is intoxicating.
- 14:58Speaker 14: You know you're funny, but you're dying. Thank you Lafu,
- 15:04Speaker 14: Thank you Flower.
- 15:05Speaker 1: You're twenty one years but you're like the most mature
- 15:07Speaker 1: person here.
- 15:08Speaker 4: I mean that's crazy, right, Like I'm a baby when
- 15:11Speaker 4: we travel al together there sometimes I'm like, what are
- 15:13Speaker 4: you guys doing?
- 15:14Speaker 9: I'm so young, But that's growing up.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Doing theater is right, and I think it's just making
- 15:21Speaker 4: me a better person.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:25Speaker 8: I love when you get into your physical comedy.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Yes, yes, here she.
- 15:30Speaker 11: Goes, Oh there's that puck face.
- 15:35Speaker 1: How is it today? Any flowers? Even sniffing?
- 15:38Speaker 9: Hey love death fly That's the biggest bit I've ever seen.
- 15:45Speaker 15: The fly bottom comes show a surprise hermia so surprised
- 15:56Speaker 15: that surprising.
- 15:58Speaker 11: I didn't see that coming.
- 15:59Speaker 9: I'm physical. What can I say?
- 16:01Speaker 1: I love it?
- 16:02Speaker 9: Please, my dear sister, go.

- 16:23Speaker 10: a lot of people like to put an eye in there,
- 16:26Speaker 10: and I find that pedestrian it's.
- 16:28Speaker 1: B l y Starbucks with this when she freaks out.
- 16:32Speaker 10: Let me tell you, I'm used to so many Starbucks
- 16:34Speaker 10: names that are not my given name.
- 16:37Speaker 8: I'm used to blind order for blind.
- 16:42Speaker 10: I've never admitted this, especially not in a recording or
- 16:45Speaker 10: on camera, but sometimes when they say frappuccino for blind,
- 16:51Speaker 10: I will pretend I'm blind and I will walk up.
- 16:54Speaker 5: You just want to make it true.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Put it in my hand.
- 17:02Speaker 8: Put it in my hand. It was hard to find
- 17:04Speaker 8: my way in here.
- 17:06Speaker 9: Look at that. You just what you just transformed.
- 17:08Speaker 3: It's unbelievably thank your ability tact.
- 17:11Speaker 10: Thank you, tip tip, thank you, thank you Centric. Let
- 17:19Speaker 10: me tell you something. When I'm around all of you,
- 17:22Speaker 10: I just feel a sense, a sense of letting go,
- 17:28Speaker 10: of just jumping in the already flowing river.
- 17:31Speaker 8: The river is warm. Let's just say the sun is heated.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Is up?
- 17:36Speaker 8: No one is pete?
- 17:36Speaker 2: And if not there.
- 17:42Speaker 6: Not there.
- 17:43Speaker 11: My favorite bathroom sign we have.
- 17:45Speaker 8: He is not there.
- 17:46Speaker 10: P f in here with an arrow straight into the
- 17:49Speaker 10: hole of the toilet.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Is not there.
- 17:57Speaker 8: He is not there.
- 18:01Speaker 10: I just I'm having so much turmoil in my personal life,
- 18:04Speaker 10: as you all know that. Coming to our rehearsals, going
- 18:09Speaker 10: on the road, I just being with all of you.
- 18:13Speaker 10: I I've discovered you are my chosen family. And when
- 18:20Speaker 10: we can live inside of these places, I can finally
- 18:25Speaker 10: be free.
- 18:30Speaker 11: We're right here for you.
- 18:31Speaker 8: I was afraid that.
- 18:32Speaker 11: I was afraid the water would start pouring.
- 18:36Speaker 5: The gates back, holding strong blind will always be your
- 18:41Speaker 5: chosen family.
- 18:42Speaker 3: And we're so sorry your brother's going through that divorce,
- 18:46Speaker 3: which thank you.
- 18:47Speaker 9: It's it must be hard. And when was the last
- 18:49Speaker 9: time you saw your brother.
- 18:51Speaker 10: It's been at least six months. I see his soon
- 18:55Speaker 10: to be ex wife at least four times a day.
- 18:58Speaker 1: I mean his wife was your best.
- 19:00Speaker 10: Friend, very very best friend. We were very very close.
- 19:09Speaker 1: It's almost like it's.
- 19:13Speaker 6: Why would that be I.
- 19:14Speaker 8: Wasn't married to her.
- 19:20Speaker 10: I'm so grateful for the opportunities that all of you
- 19:24Speaker 10: have given me. Cedric, no what what theater company on
- 19:28Speaker 10: this earth would let me play bottom literally this one.
- 19:32Speaker 11: And you channel this emotion into bottom that we never.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Need to seeing. You're bringing a certain depth that's remarkable.
- 19:41Speaker 5: I would say bottom cries in your your bottom cries
- 19:44Speaker 5: more than any other Bottom lot we ever get to see,
- 19:47Speaker 5: and it brings it makes Midsommer. We're doing the work
- 19:52Speaker 5: to make Midsummer a tragedy when it calls for it.
- 19:55Speaker 1: I mean it was.
- 19:55Speaker 2: It was so brilliant to you too. You know, you said,
- 19:58Speaker 2: I don't want to be a donkey. He said, I
- 20:01Speaker 2: want to be a kind of donkey. I want to
- 20:02Speaker 2: be Bill Clinton.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Yes, Bill Clinton is only an inspired choice that could
- 20:10Speaker 4: come from so deep within that I do know the
- 20:12Speaker 4: bar is in his grave going, oh, what a good.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Choice we players here.
- 20:19Speaker 10: We will do this for all of you tonight, on
- 20:23Speaker 10: this Morrow.
- 20:25Speaker 9: And to have.
- 20:26Speaker 16: Quint's absolutely spot one and then the saxophone you do later.
- 20:33Speaker 4: And to have Quint be Monica Lewinsky was such a
- 20:37Speaker 4: great role because Quints and Bottom are so you know.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Modern day commentary.
- 20:43Speaker 1: That skirt, you know, or quinton a skirt.
- 20:46Speaker 8: Something is just hitting me. Cedric.
- 20:49Speaker 10: When we did this production of Midsummer Troy did approach me.
- 20:53Speaker 6: After he did, he.
- 20:55Speaker 10: Did and he said, your character's my favorite. And it's
- 21:00Speaker 10: because of the name Bottom.
- 21:02Speaker 2: I'm telling you, he's about to be gay a favorite
- 21:07Speaker 2: just because of the name.
- 21:08Speaker 10: He's just hit me and I thought, what a backhanded compliment,
- 21:12Speaker 10: you little ship.
- 21:13Speaker 8: And you know I love Troy. But now I'm realizing, well, I'm.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Telling you, if he doesn't come out, he's an asshole.
- 21:21Speaker 2: When he comes out, he's sassy and he's given reads
- 21:23Speaker 2: left and I swear to God, he's about to come out.
- 21:26Speaker 9: It's truly about to be gay.
- 21:28Speaker 2: He's about to be gay. I mean, it's so funny.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Maybe he's even a bottom, and that's awesome for him.
- 21:32Speaker 2: He doesn't have to know that yet. He's eleven, but
- 21:34Speaker 2: it's exciting that he's interested in.
- 21:36Speaker 3: The word bottom. Would be funny to any eleven.
- 21:39Speaker 5: Yes, sure, yeah, sure, I mean, so there's a devil
- 21:42Speaker 5: that of course could be like just butt or buttholeole.
- 21:46Speaker 6: Oh that's good.
- 21:47Speaker 4: But you know, sometimes I picked up my friend's baby
- 21:50Speaker 4: and I went polonious, that's funny.
- 21:54Speaker 9: But hole, and then and then I went digging bulls
- 21:58Speaker 9: and work.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Really, he likes polonious, he likes polonius.
- 22:01Speaker 9: Some have the taste for that, and some like bottom
- 22:03Speaker 9: or buttole well, thank you, blind blin.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Wrong.
- 22:14Speaker 9: I was setting her.
- 22:14Speaker 1: At the bat, do you always? You probably knocked that
- 22:17Speaker 1: cup over all the time too.
- 22:19Speaker 8: Sometimes I will just for the practical joke of it.
- 22:24Speaker 6: Practice, make it again.
- 22:26Speaker 10: Make it again. What's more, you've day, I'm blind to
- 22:30Speaker 10: do it from the top.
- 22:31Speaker 6: Make it again?
- 22:32Speaker 9: Oh good, last, but certainly not.
- 22:37Speaker 5: Please please, please, please, please please.
- 22:45Speaker 6: My name is.
- 22:47Speaker 5: Calmmel by the Sea, and I am a Shakespearean actress.
- 22:55Speaker 5: At my core I teach a little bit of it
- 22:58Speaker 5: to some students in the summer. But I found my
- 23:03Speaker 5: way into Shakespeare and into theater by way of a
- 23:09Speaker 5: little gift that someone gave me one Christmas. It was
- 23:13Speaker 5: a Shakespearean insult fridge, magnet, slam poem set, and you
- 23:21Speaker 5: can put all the funny Shakespeare words like bottom or
- 23:28Speaker 5: or yucky, all these funny, hilarious Shakespeare.
- 23:34Speaker 6: I think it was.
- 23:37Speaker 2: I mean, there's Shakespeare INDs we used today through a
- 23:41Speaker 2: little bit right.
- 23:41Speaker 11: He invented so many words today.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Shakespeare invented.
- 23:44Speaker 5: He invented yucky, he invented grime, Pooh pooh, he invented
- 23:52Speaker 5: fight or flight, He invented I'll catch you later.
- 23:56Speaker 11: He invented me again.
- 24:00Speaker 9: Unity pusher pull like a door with pusher pull.
- 24:05Speaker 5: Yes, he invented order seventy three sandwich for order seventy three.
- 24:10Speaker 5: He invented so many things. And I spent hours as
- 24:14Speaker 5: a young girl rearranging all of these Shakespearean words on
- 24:18Speaker 5: my fridge and just laughing and laughing and laughing. And
- 24:22Speaker 5: then finally a man came to my doorstep and he
- 24:26Speaker 5: was selling Shakespeare classes and he said, I think this
- 24:30Speaker 5: is something that you might be interested in.
- 24:32Speaker 11: And I didn't know it could be a career, and
- 24:35Speaker 11: certainly it was.
- 24:37Speaker 3: And that who was this man right.
- 24:39Speaker 9: To your door, to my door?
- 24:42Speaker 5: So he he was, this wonderful man. He was wearing
- 24:44Speaker 5: a red and white striped suit, a straw hat, and
- 24:48Speaker 5: he was singing of Shakespeare classes.
- 24:51Speaker 1: It was like a con man.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Sounds like kind of like the plot of the music Man.
- 24:56Speaker 5: So his name was was Harry, Harry Molehill and he
- 25:01Speaker 5: had he just had, he had everyone in town buy
- 25:04Speaker 5: these classes, and it was to distract us from spending
- 25:07Speaker 5: too much time on the jukebox.
- 25:08Speaker 1: And how are the classes?
- 25:10Speaker 5: Oh, the classes were wonderful, he he he he uh.
- 25:14Speaker 5: He gave us the sheet music for Romeo and Juliet
- 25:18Speaker 5: and he said, have fun with that.
- 25:19Speaker 3: I'm gonna go.
- 25:20Speaker 11: Oh, and then we.
- 25:21Speaker 5: Would we sort of figured out how to do it ourselves.
- 25:25Speaker 5: You know, we we invented this whole new language ourselves.
- 25:28Speaker 5: And from there I springboarded into a whole career. And
- 25:33Speaker 5: that man, I I still send him a Christmas card.
- 25:35Speaker 11: I owe my life really nice, that's so dark, wonderful.
- 25:39Speaker 2: And I will say, when you know, when you came
- 25:41Speaker 2: into the company, you've been doing things I'd never seen before.
- 25:44Speaker 2: You know, you were singing. You thought all of these
- 25:46Speaker 2: shows were musicals and operas, so you would sing these monologues.
- 25:50Speaker 2: I remember your Juliette was so.
- 25:55Speaker 11: My Juliet please do it, please do a little.
- 25:59Speaker 6: Oh what.
- 26:03Speaker 17: Bye and rouse by any the word would smell as sweet.
- 26:11Speaker 17: What like the yonder window breaks? It is the east,
- 26:14Speaker 17: and Juliet is the sun. What like the yonder window breaks,
- 26:19Speaker 17: It is the east and Juliette is the sun.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Romeo was fine with you taking his mean better if
- 26:26Speaker 1: it comes.
- 26:26Speaker 11: From a girl, if it comes from a girl.
- 26:30Speaker 9: But don't forget here.
- 26:31Speaker 4: I come flying from the rafters.
- 26:38Speaker 11: I loved my flying nurse.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Can I say also, I love it because you really
- 26:44Speaker 3: kind of expand both what Shakespeare is and what singing is.
- 26:48Speaker 5: Feels like a.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Very loose definition of what singing is too spoken word
- 26:53Speaker 3: somewhere in the middle. Yes.
- 26:54Speaker 5: Well, well, Harry Molhill always said, you know, whatever you're
- 26:58Speaker 5: doing is right. I'm gonna be over here for a minute,
- 27:01Speaker 5: and so I take that with me, and it's something
- 27:03Speaker 5: I try and teach my students too. Whatever you're doing
- 27:06Speaker 5: is right. And then I have to find something. I
- 27:08Speaker 5: never found out what he was doing over there, So
- 27:11Speaker 5: I'm coming up with all these kinds of things I'm
- 27:13Speaker 5: doing over there for a second, I'm playing tetris, I'm
- 27:15Speaker 5: on a computer, I'm sending emails, I'm twiddling my thumbs.
- 27:19Speaker 4: To be honest, i'd say my favorite thing with you,
- 27:21Speaker 4: my dear, it was all three of us when we
- 27:23Speaker 4: did the Wicked Sisters in.
- 27:26Speaker 8: The Scottish play Don't get myself.
- 27:31Speaker 5: Gargoyleaining around the gargoyle.
- 27:36Speaker 9: Cedric set the scene for them.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Because I don't know if any of these podcast listeners
- 27:41Speaker 4: understand the Scottish.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Play for the Scottish play or Mackers or you know,
- 27:45Speaker 2: because you were talking about the real thing, Macbeth, I'm
- 27:48Speaker 2: gonna say you can say it, you know.
- 27:50Speaker 3: If you're if you're talking about doing it, I think
- 27:53Speaker 3: it's all right.
- 27:54Speaker 2: You're allowed to do that, you can, which is weird.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Why is anyone saying it when they aren't talking about it?
- 27:57Speaker 10: Well, you aren't supposed to say it in a theater.
- 27:59Speaker 10: So there's a ritual you'll have to do, okay, to
- 28:02Speaker 10: take to take the stink off of it.
- 28:05Speaker 4: You have to go outside, spin around three times thrice.
- 28:09Speaker 4: This is the one I did. Yes, spin around thrice, spit,
- 28:13Speaker 4: say a bad word yes, and then ask permission to
- 28:15Speaker 4: come back in real quick.
- 28:17Speaker 9: All right, someone needs to let you back in.
- 28:19Speaker 1: I'll come over here. I'll do it over here.
- 28:20Speaker 9: And you did say it twice, so I think you
- 28:21Speaker 9: should do it twice.
- 28:22Speaker 1: I'll do it six times, and I'll say two bad words.
- 28:25Speaker 8: Okay, what's he going to choose?
- 28:27Speaker 5: Okay, I think it's gonna be dumped. I think it
- 28:31Speaker 5: should be ship or bitch.
- 28:33Speaker 11: I like, I like the eye sounds.
- 28:35Speaker 8: I hope it's motherfuckery.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Ooh, pussy tain't ooh.
- 28:42Speaker 8: Yes, yes, you can come on it, you Vampire.
- 28:48Speaker 2: An incredible, incredible show about a man who uh basically
- 28:54Speaker 2: is blonded by ambition and his wife who pushes ambition
- 28:59Speaker 2: upon on him as well, and eventually uh he sees
- 29:04Speaker 2: the future and decides basically, I want that future and
- 29:07Speaker 2: he gets it by and it means possible. Turns out
- 29:09Speaker 2: it's bad future, but there's three witches in it, and
- 29:11Speaker 2: the witches come on in and they.
- 29:15Speaker 1: And there too.
- 29:17Speaker 9: But you were so brilliant with how you saw the witches.
- 29:21Speaker 2: So we were doing a kind of a modern version
- 29:24Speaker 2: based on, you know, the things that I've been seeing
- 29:26Speaker 2: my son do on the internet. So we were doing
- 29:28Speaker 2: a kind of a cancel culture version.
- 29:31Speaker 1: And and the idea was they.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Were they were social media, they were different apps. So
- 29:36Speaker 2: each witch was TikTok Facebook.
- 29:39Speaker 9: I was the Twitter bird because I flew.
- 29:43Speaker 5: Twitter sisters hand in hand, posters of the social Yeah, share.
- 30:03Speaker 12: Email, how did we go? Screenshot? Apology, sap apology, apology?
- 30:15Speaker 3: And I would go.
- 30:17Speaker 1: And I would say, doesn't have anyone.
- 30:22Speaker 11: Oh, that scene was so scary.
- 30:24Speaker 1: It was very scary.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Y'all were so amazing, and it was fun to make
- 30:28Speaker 2: social media scary. And I know a lot of people
- 30:30Speaker 2: are wondering why you changed a lot of texts from Shakespeare.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Why do you call yourself Shakespeare group? You have to
- 30:35Speaker 2: update that Shakespeare was was modern at the time.
- 30:37Speaker 1: You got to update Pase.
- 30:39Speaker 5: Were the emails of that time. Absolutely, it would just
- 30:42Speaker 5: be what he wants us to do. I will say, Flower,
- 30:46Speaker 5: I I was a little jew.
- 30:49Speaker 9: Speaking.
- 30:51Speaker 11: I'm speaking to you, dear Flower.
- 30:56Speaker 5: I'll be back in the morning for as.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Imagine him cooking. Imagine him cooking.
- 31:07Speaker 14: Away at my hoo.
- 31:13Speaker 6: I don't think so.
- 31:15Speaker 5: Okay, but you you were flying so much higher than
- 31:19Speaker 5: the two of us, and I was a little worried
- 31:21Speaker 5: that you might have thought that you were the lead
- 31:23Speaker 5: witch when the three witches are equal.
- 31:26Speaker 8: Well, are we going to talk about this?
- 31:29Speaker 10: I guess we are talking about Yes, if you were
- 31:32Speaker 10: pulling a little bit of an.
- 31:33Speaker 8: Icarus there, tip tip.
- 31:36Speaker 6: Perps.
- 31:42Speaker 3: Wow, this episode is really funny so far, wouldn't you say, Kylie?
- 31:45Speaker 5: I think I'd say so, Jeremy, And you know, I'd
- 31:48Speaker 5: say that there's a lot of stuff coming down the
- 31:50Speaker 5: pike that is not necessarily only on this episode.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Yes, we're talking about our Patreon. You guys can check
- 31:57Speaker 3: us out on Patreon. Yeah, we play these ridiculous characters,
- 32:00Speaker 3: but we also are all friends and real life people
- 32:03Speaker 3: and we like hanging out.
- 32:04Speaker 11: We talk about all the episodes.
- 32:06Speaker 5: We have an after show for every episode that uh
- 32:09Speaker 5: in the past, like Recent Memory two years that you
- 32:12Speaker 5: can find on there for the low low price of
- 32:15Speaker 5: five dollars a month. And we have a bunch of
- 32:17Speaker 5: other stuff too. Jeremy danced for twelve weeks straight one time.
- 32:20Speaker 5: You can find all of that on the Patreon.
- 32:22Speaker 3: That was a blast. We put in way more work
- 32:24Speaker 3: than we need to, and that is reasonable for the Patreon.
- 32:28Speaker 3: We just love it. We love hanging out and talking
- 32:29Speaker 3: to y'all, so come on and check it out. It
- 32:33Speaker 3: genuinely does help us.
- 32:35Speaker 5: We we can't. We can't do this without you. Uh oh,
- 32:38Speaker 5: she's gone, jafay join the patrio.
- 32:49Speaker 4: Well, I would, I would defer to our our leader
- 32:53Speaker 4: if I was doing any.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Of that so kind. I don't see myself talking about me.
- 32:59Speaker 3: It was just me.
- 33:01Speaker 1: I appreciate it.
- 33:02Speaker 9: Sure did I ask for a megaphone. I thought that
- 33:06Speaker 9: character needed it. Twitter's louder than the others.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Sure.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Look what I'll say is I love what all of
- 33:15Speaker 2: y'all will bring it, and I understand you know, this
- 33:17Speaker 2: is what happens when it comes to.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Working with actors. Sometimes people think they have an idea
- 33:22Speaker 1: of a vision, and.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Shakespeare is a blank slate in many ways, people think
- 33:26Speaker 2: they can add whatever they want. So I had to
- 33:28Speaker 2: come to y'all and I had to say, hey, you know,
- 33:31Speaker 2: bring the energy, throw it at each other, just don't
- 33:34Speaker 2: throw it at us. So I allowed you all to
- 33:36Speaker 2: fight because it was good for the show.
- 33:39Speaker 8: I get it.
- 33:40Speaker 3: Yeah, and the show is so beautiful at the end,
- 33:43Speaker 3: you know, changing Macca to Logan pol killed by Kay Sinot.
- 33:48Speaker 2: The absolutely yes, Macduff was Kai sinat Logan, Paul was Mackers,
- 33:54Speaker 2: and Lady Mackers of course was being played by.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Brittany Broski by her. But we were doing somebody.
- 34:02Speaker 5: Was doing Britain doing Brittany as got it.
- 34:06Speaker 1: I love this.
- 34:08Speaker 9: I liked that Bank was Tom from my Space.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Why it was awesome and the drunken guard Jeeves from
- 34:17Speaker 2: Ask Jeeves kind of o g social media.
- 34:19Speaker 4: I think I don't want to be misread and move
- 34:23Speaker 4: on past that.
- 34:24Speaker 8: I understand.
- 34:25Speaker 9: I I apologize.
- 34:27Speaker 4: I didn't ever feel that way from you from our director,
- 34:32Speaker 4: and I lead and I go to the leadership right
- 34:34Speaker 4: in a play.
- 34:35Speaker 18: But I think it just it goes back to I'll
- 34:38Speaker 18: say it, it goes back to.
- 34:43Speaker 8: Twelfth Night.
- 34:48Speaker 2: One way that y'all kind of get in fights and
- 34:53Speaker 2: I remember the interpretation fight where where y'all were mad
- 34:57Speaker 2: at each other, but you were coming to me and saying,
- 35:00Speaker 2: I think Shakespeare meant that she needs to be off stage,
- 35:04Speaker 2: and I think Shakespeare says here, because I always we
- 35:06Speaker 2: have a process where we sit down and go, what.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Did Shakespeare mean here?
- 35:09Speaker 6: What do you think Shakespeare?
- 35:10Speaker 3: We all become the drama teur.
- 35:12Speaker 4: I love that you have us all by the no
- 35:14Speaker 4: Fear Shakespeare of court at the top of every room.
- 35:17Speaker 4: The script we use is no Fear Shakespeare.
- 35:19Speaker 6: Yes.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Yeah, so you know what you're saying every single step
- 35:22Speaker 1: of the way.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Yes, And sometimes y'all try to interpret it and try
- 35:26Speaker 2: to push your own agendas.
- 35:27Speaker 1: And let's talk about that, because I don't think that's
- 35:29Speaker 1: in the text.
- 35:30Speaker 2: I don't think you know, Shakespeare intended for this character
- 35:33Speaker 2: to look uglier than me.
- 35:34Speaker 1: You say that sometimes, and I think that's kind of nasty, you.
- 35:38Speaker 10: Know, Cedric? Can I just lay bear here? May I
- 35:43Speaker 10: lay bear before.
- 35:44Speaker 9: The the court agrees.
- 35:48Speaker 10: I'm checking in with myself tiptop as we discuss all
- 35:52Speaker 10: of this. I'll just say it, call vine own self
- 35:59Speaker 10: full to the.
- 36:00Speaker 8: Brim of jealousy.
- 36:02Speaker 6: Yay.
- 36:04Speaker 8: Oh, I was jealous.
- 36:06Speaker 3: I had what.
- 36:08Speaker 10: Ya ya, I was overflowing. My cup did overfloweth with
- 36:15Speaker 10: the feelings of envious want.
- 36:20Speaker 8: Of your talent, my dear.
- 36:24Speaker 4: My youth, your youth, I knew it to be my
- 36:27Speaker 4: youth yeay, but also your talent.
- 36:31Speaker 8: The audience did adore thee.
- 36:35Speaker 3: Hmm.
- 36:36Speaker 8: I do apologize to THEE. I am on bended mee
- 36:41Speaker 8: to THEE.
- 36:41Speaker 10: I do substrate myself and rip my ribs open to THEE.
- 36:49Speaker 8: I am sorry now you oh your apology.
- 36:57Speaker 5: And I'm and I and I feel you know, okay, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 37:06Speaker 5: a little.
- 37:06Speaker 11: Jealous too, a little jealous.
- 37:09Speaker 9: Also, thank you, dear sisters, Thank you from the.
- 37:15Speaker 8: I don't either.
- 37:16Speaker 9: I didn't feel overshadowed or any of that.
