Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Once again, welcome back to the Recess Bell. And there
- 0:02Speaker 1: we are in hour number two, 11 minutes into it.
- 0:05Speaker 1: And let's get to this news report real fast. So
- 0:06Speaker 1: like I mentioned, we have three central stories on the
- 0:09Speaker 1: news report. We have to talk about an update on
- 0:12Speaker 1: Cornell's campus. We have to talk about the New York
- 0:17Speaker 1: governor's debate. The first and only New York governor's debate
- 0:20Speaker 1: between Kathy Hochul, the incumbent candidate, and Bruce Blakeman. And
- 0:24Speaker 1: then we got to talk about the fortunate death of
- 0:26Speaker 1: Breaking Bad star R.J.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Mitty.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And Corey, like you said, insane circumstances now surrounding his
- 0:32Speaker 1: very unfortunate, very heartbreaking death.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Let's get to it.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Sounds like a lot of hoopla. Sounds like a lot
- 0:41Speaker 1: of hoopla. Sounds like a hoopla.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Hoopla.
- 0:51Speaker 2: This is the Recess Bell's News Report, brought to you
- 0:54Speaker 2: by the Recess Bell LLC, the network for creatives. The
- 0:57Speaker 2: voices you are about to hear are not those of
- 0:58Speaker 2: official political analysts, rather just football sitting in a room
- 1:00Speaker 2: discussing politics just like you would at the family table
- 1:02Speaker 2: or with your friends. Please do not hold the voices
- 1:03Speaker 2: you are about to hear to the same extent as
- 1:04Speaker 2: you would official commentators and contributors on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News,
- 1:07Speaker 2: or any other licensed news company.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Disclaimers, disclaimers. If you missed that one, listen, man. I
- 1:16Speaker 1: got too much going on, bro. Ooh, Joshua said this
- 1:20Speaker 1: during a news report. Controversial. Take your ass out of
- 1:25Speaker 1: my mentions. Go to this email address, whpc at ncc.edu.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Our dedicated station director will feel all your complaints on
- 1:32Speaker 1: our behalf. Just goofballs in the room, bro. Don't hate
- 1:37Speaker 1: the players, hate the game. All right? And here's the
- 1:40Speaker 1: game we're going to spit to you tonight. Your news anchor,
- 1:59Speaker 1: Joshua Umahi. We start once again for the third consecutive
- 2:02Speaker 1: week on the news report. At Cornell University, we have
- 2:08Speaker 1: been covering the rape culture controversy on Cornell's campus, highlighting
- 2:13Speaker 1: the need for increased nuance and and thoroughness of analysis
- 2:17Speaker 1: on sensitive topics such as this one. So, what happened
- 2:21Speaker 1: this past week? In addition to released text messages between
- 2:25Speaker 1: Jane Doe, the complainant and alleged victim of a gang
- 2:28Speaker 1: rape by several members of the Chi Phi fraternity, and
- 2:32Speaker 1: two members of the fraternity who will be referred to
- 2:34Speaker 1: in this report as.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Male 1 and Male 2, We also bring you an
- 2:40Speaker 4: update to the significant steps Cornell University is taking to
- 2:44Speaker 4: help ensure that nothing like this happens ever again.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Just like last week, we turn to CBS News for
- 2:50Speaker 1: the report.
- 2:51Speaker 5: Cornell University has shut down all fraternity parties and social
- 2:55Speaker 5: events for the rest of the school year. This follows
- 2:58Speaker 5: weeks of national scrutiny over an alleged sexual assault at
- 3:01Speaker 5: a campus fraternity there in twenty twenty four. And this
- 3:05Speaker 5: comes as CBS News has exclusively obtained text messages between
- 3:09Speaker 5: Jane Doe and two of the men she accuses of
- 3:11Speaker 5: raping her from the days following the alleged incident. And
- 3:15Speaker 5: in an interview with The New York Times published just
- 3:18Speaker 5: last night, university president Michael Kotlikoff said he was, quote,
- 3:22Speaker 5: personally sorry for what Jane Doe experienced.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So you heard there, Cornell banning all frat parties and
- 3:29Speaker 1: social events for the foreseeable future following this controversy that struck.
- 3:33Speaker 1: the university. We turn to CBS News national correspondent Lilia
- 3:37Speaker 1: Luciano for an extended report.
- 3:39Speaker 6: Newly obtained text messages between Jane Doe and two of
- 3:42Speaker 6: the men she accuses of raping her shine new light
- 3:45Speaker 6: on their interactions following the alleged 2024 incident. Two days later,
- 3:50Speaker 6: in an exchange with one of them, who had messaged
- 3:52Speaker 6: a group containing dozens of fraternity brothers that night advertising
- 3:56Speaker 6: free sex, Jane Doe wrote in part, quote, at the
- 4:00Speaker 6: end of the day, none of the sexual stuff was illegal,
- 4:03Speaker 6: later adding, quote, our body, our choice. Nearly two weeks
- 4:07Speaker 6: after that, she followed up, 90% of what happened that
- 4:11Speaker 6: night was not consensual and said she had been made
- 4:14Speaker 6: to do drugs, quote, like a sex doll worker. In response,
- 4:18Speaker 6: he wrote in part, quote, I don't remember any of
- 4:20Speaker 6: this happening, which is why I've been feeling so terrible
- 4:23Speaker 6: about the whole situation.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So I mentioned it during the intro. People saw those
- 4:28Speaker 1: texts that went viral the other day where this Jane
- 4:32Speaker 1: Doe said, hey, You know, our body, our choice, right?
- 4:35Speaker 1: You know, I had fun, dah, dah, dah, dah. And
- 4:37Speaker 1: people are like, ha, gotcha. We knew you were lying.
- 4:40Speaker 1: You lied about the sexual assault. What, you wanted some attention?
- 4:42Speaker 1: You wanted some money? Dah, dah, dah, dah, dah. But
- 4:45Speaker 1: as was mentioned by Lilia Luciano there, it's something called,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and we'll get to her next audio. It's a lot
- 4:55Speaker 1: more complicated. Like I said, there's more than meets the eye.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Let me just play this clip first, and then I'll
- 4:59Speaker 1: explain my take on it. So here's more from this report.
- 5:03Speaker 6: In an exchange with a separate Chi Phi member who
- 5:05Speaker 6: had encouraged brothers to, quote, come whip it out in
- 5:08Speaker 6: the fraternity group chat that night, he texted in part,
- 5:12Speaker 6: this will blow over, adding, I don't think you have
- 5:15Speaker 6: anything to be ashamed of. She responded, quote, you're right,
- 5:18Speaker 6: it'll get better. More than two weeks later, she texted again,
- 5:21Speaker 6: I think I'm done talking to you. I know you lied.
- 5:25Speaker 6: Jane Doe's lawyer told CBS News her messages reflected, quote,
- 5:29Speaker 6: classic symptoms of delayed recognition and called them, quote, a
- 5:33Speaker 6: textbook response to sexual assault.
- 5:35Speaker 1: So that's what I was kind of alluding to earlier.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So delayed recognition is defined as, you know, when the
- 5:40Speaker 1: person does not immediately perceive, name, or feel the impact
- 5:44Speaker 1: of an emotional or stressful experience. The realization or emotional
- 5:48Speaker 1: reaction hits days later, sometimes weeks later, sometimes hours later,
- 5:54Speaker 1: but Sometime after the traumatic event, once the nervous system
- 5:58Speaker 1: has had time to process it. So what could have happened,
- 6:05Speaker 1: and this is why I say it's more than what
- 6:06Speaker 1: meets the eye. We need critical thinking. We need nuance.
- 6:08Speaker 1: What may have happened here. It's allegations, right? So she
- 6:12Speaker 1: may have lied. Yes, that's a possibility. But another possibility
- 6:15Speaker 1: is she was trying to justify it in her own mind.
- 6:18Speaker 1: You know, it's tough to go up against fraternity members
- 6:21Speaker 1: you was hanging out with, trusted. And then days later,
- 6:24Speaker 1: you think about it in your private moments and it's like, no,
- 6:27Speaker 1: that was really wild. Like that was really effed up
- 6:30Speaker 1: what happened. And then you proceed on that basis. So
- 6:34Speaker 1: that's why I say these texts went viral. Oh, this
- 6:37Speaker 1: lady's this woman's a liar. This young girl's a liar.
- 6:39Speaker 1: She wanted attention. She wanted money. She liked it. But
- 6:43Speaker 1: when you come to consider stuff like what I just said,
- 6:45Speaker 1: delayed recognition, it's a lot more complicated than that. I
- 6:50Speaker 1: got to say. Finishing up on this report, Lilia Luciano.
- 6:53Speaker 1: No justice, no peace.
- 6:56Speaker 6: Renewed scrutiny over Jane Doe's assault allegations led to campus-wide
- 7:00Speaker 6: protests in recent weeks. And on Tuesday, Cornell's president announced
- 7:06Speaker 6: several policy changes, including working with New York State investigators
- 7:11Speaker 6: to look into sexual assault claims on campus, plus suspending
- 7:14Speaker 6: all fraternity parties and social events for the rest of
- 7:18Speaker 6: the school year. We asked Cornell students how they felt
- 7:22Speaker 6: about a potential ban on Greek life altogether.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I would call for an end to Greek life on campus,
- 7:28Speaker 1: or at least some severe reform before we.
- 7:30Speaker 7: See it opening again. I don't believe that just banning
- 7:32Speaker 7: Greek life as a whole is automatically just going to mean, oh, okay,
- 7:34Speaker 7: there's going to be no more parties, no more sexual
- 7:36Speaker 7: violence is going to happen, no more kids are going
- 7:37Speaker 7: to drink or anything.
- 7:38Speaker 6: Cornell's Title IX investigation at the time found both of
- 7:41Speaker 6: the men responsible for sexual assault and expelled them. They
- 7:45Speaker 6: have previously denied wrongdoing.
- 7:48Speaker 1: So you have those expulsions. Interesting, you heard the protests
- 7:51Speaker 1: on campus on Cornell in that audio piece there. Where
- 7:54Speaker 1: do y'all fall on that in terms of like they
- 7:56Speaker 1: ban frat parties and they ban social events? Now, you
- 8:00Speaker 1: heard both those students during the interviews. One of them said, yeah,
- 8:04Speaker 1: we need to ban it because what good does it
- 8:06Speaker 1: really bring, especially at this point when it leads to
- 8:09Speaker 1: dangerous behavior like what was going on at Chi Phi, allegedly.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Right.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And then you had the other guy saying, OK, we
- 8:16Speaker 1: ban frats. Does that automatically mean no sexual violence? No.
- 8:19Speaker 1: could still happen elsewhere in other contexts so i don't
- 8:22Speaker 1: know where y'all fall on that uh.
- 8:24Speaker 3: I'm not gonna front i think it should be on
- 8:26Speaker 3: a suspension period right now um i i think you
- 8:31Speaker 3: should put like a maybe like a two year two
- 8:34Speaker 3: to three year ban on on greek life right now
- 8:37Speaker 3: just to see two to three years okay two two
- 8:39Speaker 3: just because i don't want to just be like oh
- 8:41Speaker 3: yeah a year and then like oh that's just that
- 8:43Speaker 3: feels like a little slap on the wrist For like
- 8:45Speaker 3: two to three years, gets the message across that you're
- 8:48Speaker 3: not messing around and you get the actual... I would
- 8:51Speaker 3: say you get more of a case study with it
- 8:54Speaker 3: on what's actually going on. And if it makes no difference,
- 8:58Speaker 3: if it obviously makes no difference... As the student alluded to,
- 9:04Speaker 3: it might happen other places. Then, yeah, you might be like, okay,
- 9:08Speaker 3: so we might need to work other avenues to try
- 9:12Speaker 3: to prevent this from happening. So maybe it's not the
- 9:15Speaker 3: Greek life that's the problem. Maybe it's more of a
- 9:18Speaker 3: broader issue. But I think, like I said, I would
- 9:21Speaker 3: give it two to three years suspension.
- 9:26Speaker 8: I'm with that. I'm with it because this is a
- 9:30Speaker 8: very disgusting situation. Um, I'm thinking about it. This happened
- 9:35Speaker 8: in 2024. And when did she actually come out and
- 9:38Speaker 8: like say that this happened?
- 9:40Speaker 1: So she first went, I believe sometime, it wasn't immediately after,
- 9:45Speaker 1: but sometime after the assault in question, she went to
- 9:49Speaker 1: campus police and they did their reports on it. They
- 9:53Speaker 1: tried to interview the, um, The accused, that went nowhere.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And then 2026, now she filed a civil lawsuit. that
- 10:00Speaker 1: led to criminal charges being refiled so that's the history
- 10:03Speaker 1: with it it's it's it's extremely complicated but people are
- 10:08Speaker 1: talking about on social media like like it's uh it's
- 10:11Speaker 1: it's salute like oh she lied or oh she definitely
- 10:13Speaker 1: got assaulted but you have to read all the facts
- 10:16Speaker 1: and and try to get a clearer picture but what
- 10:18Speaker 1: is clear is that Hey, they had a woman in
- 10:22Speaker 1: there that walked up in the Fred house and you
- 10:24Speaker 1: read the text.
- 10:27Speaker 8: Look, even with the parties and everything, with the suspensions
- 10:30Speaker 8: of all that and everything, I'm pretty sure there's going
- 10:33Speaker 8: to be a lot fewer of enrollments for next semester,
- 10:38Speaker 8: the next school year, school years after that.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Female enrollments are.
- 10:41Speaker 8: Definitely going to go down. So it's just like, it's
- 10:45Speaker 8: going to do something because... obviously students are not going
- 10:48Speaker 8: to want to attend that school obviously for that situation
- 10:51Speaker 8: but also because you know you have some genuine party
- 10:54Speaker 8: animals and what do they want to do they want
- 10:56Speaker 8: to go to college just to have fun right and
- 10:58Speaker 8: you don't even have that fun on campus so it's
- 11:00Speaker 8: just like oh what am i going to this school
- 11:02Speaker 8: for just to go to school like that's boring like
- 11:06Speaker 8: that's what you're supposed to go to school for and
- 11:08Speaker 8: at the end of the day look i i'm okay
- 11:11Speaker 8: with if there's never another party on that campus because
- 11:14Speaker 8: this is not a situation to be taken lightly And
- 11:17Speaker 8: the fact that it took some time for all of
- 11:19Speaker 8: this stuff from the story to get out, it's sad
- 11:25Speaker 8: because what are we really doing for our women?
- 11:29Speaker 1: That's a fact. And I brought this up during last
- 11:31Speaker 1: week's news report. Cornell University had a chance to even
- 11:36Speaker 1: prevent it getting to this point back in 2024. But
- 11:39Speaker 1: due to their lackluster handling of it, their haphazard handling
- 11:43Speaker 1: of it, they were much more concerned with sweeping it
- 11:46Speaker 1: under the rug and protecting the reputation of Cornell versus,
- 11:49Speaker 1: like you said, protecting the women on campus. And you
- 11:51Speaker 1: see that with a lot of universities. You see it
- 11:53Speaker 1: with a lot of companies.
- 11:55Speaker 8: It's sad. It's disgusting. It's so many words on so
- 12:00Speaker 8: many different levels. And it's just like, we got to
- 12:03Speaker 8: protect our women. Like, this can't happen. Like you said,
- 12:07Speaker 8: this happens, honestly, Probably every day, that's just things swept
- 12:12Speaker 8: under the rug that we don't even know about. And
- 12:14Speaker 8: it's saddening.
- 12:17Speaker 1: As my mama always told me, what's done in the
- 12:19Speaker 1: dark eventually comes to light. So there's another example. Much
- 12:22Speaker 1: more updates on this, of course, on future news reports.
- 12:25Speaker 1: We pivot to election season. The New York governor race
- 12:28Speaker 1: took an important step forward last night. As the first
- 12:31Speaker 1: and only televised debate between the incumbent candidate, current governor
- 12:35Speaker 1: and Democrat Kathy Hochul, and her challenger, current Nassau County executive,
- 12:41Speaker 1: Bruce Blakeman.
- 12:44Speaker 8: Mr.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Bruce! It took place in East Harlem last night. Topics
- 12:50Speaker 1: range from hot-button topics in both New York and beyond.
- 12:54Speaker 1: High prices, immigration, AI, data centers. The usual. Holko was
- 13:00Speaker 1: pressed by Blakeman on her alliances briefly with New York
- 13:03Speaker 1: City Mayor Zoran Mamdani. Blakeman... in retaliation from Hochul was
- 13:08Speaker 1: pressed by Hochul on his chummy relationship with Donald J.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Trump. Mm-hmm.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Essentially calling Blakeman a Trump puppet.
- 13:19Speaker 9: Just four days ago, you stood on a stage screaming
- 13:22Speaker 9: at the top of your lungs, we love Donald Trump.
- 13:26Speaker 9: You've also said he's the greatest president of your lifetime.
- 13:30Speaker 9: Now which is it that makes him so great? Is
- 13:33Speaker 9: it the high utility costs? The high grocery costs? The
- 13:36Speaker 9: high gas costs? Is it his unfettered use of ICE
- 13:40Speaker 9: terrorizing our neighborhoods?
- 13:42Speaker 8: Is it his throwing millions of New Yorkers off of healthcare?
- 13:46Speaker 9: Which is it that makes him the greatest president, in
- 13:48Speaker 9: your opinion, which you have said so many times?
- 13:51Speaker 1: Yeah, well, at a.
- 13:52Speaker 7: Rally, as you know, it's a cheering section and you
- 13:56Speaker 7: say things to get the crowd worked up. And I
- 13:59Speaker 7: think Donald Trump deserves accolades for many of the things
- 14:03Speaker 7: that he's done.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Yo, Mr.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Bruce said it's provocative. It gets the people going. He
- 14:11Speaker 1: wanted to get the crowd riled up. Donald Trump is
- 14:13Speaker 1: the greatest president.
- 14:15Speaker 8: So Bruce Blakeman is not a Republican.
- 14:19Speaker 1: He's MAGA. Important distinction. Very, very important distinction there. He's
- 14:26Speaker 1: MAGA to the.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Teeth, too.
- 14:29Speaker 8: You can't take over my state, son.
- 14:34Speaker 1: The fact that I've said this about Mr.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Bruce.
- 14:38Speaker 1: I feel like Mr.
- 14:39Speaker 9: Bruce.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I was personally surprised that he won the re-election for
- 14:44Speaker 1: Nassau County Executive last year. Personally. Yeah. Personally speaking. Don't
- 14:47Speaker 1: shoot the messenger. But now he's going for governor. And
- 14:50Speaker 1: you know what? In terms of financial support, guess who Mr.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Bruce got in his pocket?
- 14:56Speaker 3: Who he got in his pocket?
- 14:57Speaker 1: He got Knicks owner James Dolan in his pocket.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Friend of the show, James Dolan. You know James Dolan
- 15:06Speaker 1: on Monday? Matter of fact, let me start here before
- 15:10Speaker 1: I even get to what he did on Monday. James
- 15:13Speaker 1: Dolan announced a $ 10, 000 a person fundraiser at Madison Square
- 15:19Speaker 1: Garden tomorrow before the Knicks Raptors preseason game.
- 15:26Speaker 8: Oh, that's nasty.
- 15:27Speaker 1: In support of Republican candidate Bruce Blakeman. That's nasty. So
- 15:33Speaker 1: people always talk about keep politics out of sports. Oh, no,
- 15:37Speaker 1: not here. Not with the Knicks and not with James Dolan. Dolan,
- 15:40Speaker 1: who is New York's largest Republican donor, will host a
- 15:43Speaker 1: fundraiser tomorrow evening from 6.30 to 7.30. And like I said,
- 15:51Speaker 1: it's $ 10, 000. $ 10, 000 a person to attend with additional contribution levels. $ 25, 000
- 15:58Speaker 1: for the friend level and $ 50, 000 for the patriot level.
- 16:04Speaker 1: If you a patriot, you got to get 50 grand.
- 16:06Speaker 1: You got to get 50 grand. To Bruce Blakeman.
- 16:11Speaker 8: You know that word patriot. Like it's. That word patriot.
- 16:16Speaker 8: It's very like. If I can go another day. Where
- 16:20Speaker 8: I just never have to hear that word again. Because
- 16:23Speaker 8: I've heard it so many times.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Working at WABC.
- 16:26Speaker 7: Oh God.
- 16:27Speaker 8: Roger Stone used to say it. Oh this man is
- 16:30Speaker 8: a patriot. No he's not. Like can we stop.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Like.
- 16:37Speaker 8: People don't know the exact definition of a patriot because
- 16:41Speaker 8: we're calling anybody a patriot.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Anybody that supports their beliefs.
- 16:46Speaker 8: You're paying $ 25, 000 to be a patriot.
- 16:48Speaker 9: Damn.
- 16:48Speaker 1: 50 grand, actually. 50 grand. 25 grand for a friend,
- 16:53Speaker 1: if you're a friend. Oh, you're a friend. Yeah, you're
- 16:54Speaker 1: a friend.
- 16:54Speaker 8: 50 grand, you're a New England patriot.
- 16:56Speaker 1: There we go.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I just want to say one thing. Shout out
- 17:01Speaker 3: Kathy Hochul. Her name was on the check, so that's
- 17:03Speaker 3: why I'm giving her a shout out. Oh, shout out
- 17:07Speaker 3: to her. The hundo came in clutch.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Oh, yeah? Oh, you got your check? Oh, the rebate check.
- 17:12Speaker 1: You got your rebate check?
- 17:14Speaker 2: Wow.
- 17:14Speaker 8: McCrory's getting paid.
- 17:16Speaker 1: You got my vote. He's voting blue.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 17:18Speaker 1: You got my vote.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Easy.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Now, it's worth noting here that Dolan is actually a
- 17:23Speaker 1: former Hokul supporter. Four years ago, a super PAC controlled
- 17:26Speaker 1: by his MSG spent about $ 700, 000 supporting Ms. Hokul. Dolan's
- 17:32Speaker 1: family funneled financial support directly to the governor's campaign. He's
- 17:35Speaker 1: completely switched up. And wherever Dolan has a problem lately,
- 17:40Speaker 1: you know, Mom Donnie has something to do with it.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Not that Mom Donnie is doing anything. Just the hate
- 17:46Speaker 1: that James Dolan has for the mayor of his city
- 17:50Speaker 1: is generational. Do y'all remember the Knicks parade once it
- 17:54Speaker 1: touched down a city hall? Zoran gave that extended speech
- 17:58Speaker 1: going through the whole Knicks history of the losing and
- 18:01Speaker 1: the players and the failed draft picks and the overpriced
- 18:05Speaker 1: free agent signings and everything. And most people thought it
- 18:08Speaker 1: was touching. James Dolan hopped up there like, hey, you
- 18:12Speaker 1: know the history. If you're a real Knicks fan, you
- 18:16Speaker 1: don't need to hear about it again. And you listen
- 18:18Speaker 1: to all the reports. Dolan got real smoke of Mamdani.
- 18:21Speaker 1: So Mamdani supporting Kathy Hochul. That was enough for Dolan, apparently,
- 18:25Speaker 1: to completely switch gears.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Incredible.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Something wrong, man. Something incredible. A complete U-turn as it
- 18:32Speaker 1: pertains to Kathy Hochul for James Dolan.
- 18:36Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Oh, man. And by the way, you got to pay
- 18:39Speaker 1: Kat his money, too.
- 18:41Speaker 8: Chop, chop.
- 18:42Speaker 1: What are we doing?
- 18:43Speaker 3: Hey, James, we would have got a sweep if you
- 18:45Speaker 3: didn't invite that man there. You didn't invite that man
- 18:48Speaker 3: there that slept through most of the game. Just want
- 18:51Speaker 3: to point that out.
- 18:51Speaker 1: You know, so many people that spent Thousands of dollars
- 18:55Speaker 1: to attend Knicks games, especially in the playoffs. And you
- 18:59Speaker 1: get a guy, the president gets invited. He sleeps for
- 19:01Speaker 1: three quarters of it in a suite.
- 19:04Speaker 8: And that was the most entertaining game of the series.
- 19:07Speaker 1: It was a great game. Yeah.
- 19:09Speaker 8: He slept.
- 19:10Speaker 1: He slept through it. He was there for the anthem.
- 19:13Speaker 8: Oh, the Spurs are 15. I'm going to sleep.
- 19:17Speaker 1: That's exactly what he did.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Incredible.
- 19:21Speaker 1: I can't imagine. If you've ever been to Madison Square
- 19:23Speaker 1: Garden for anything, especially a Knicks game, I can't imagine
- 19:26Speaker 1: falling asleep for three quarters of the game. It just
- 19:28Speaker 1: doesn't compute. It's too entertaining.
- 19:31Speaker 8: And it's loud in there.
- 19:32Speaker 1: It's... During the finals, too. You know, he was sundowning.
- 19:38Speaker 1: He's an old guy. He's 80 years old. Yeah, man.
- 19:41Speaker 2: He's... Yeah, you get it.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Tragedy, unfortunately, in the acting industry as we... uh switch
- 19:50Speaker 1: topics american actor the disability rights activist rj middy known
- 19:56Speaker 1: most famously for his work as walter white's son walter
- 19:59Speaker 1: jr in the renowned uh iconic television show breaking bad
- 20:05Speaker 1: Dead at 34 years of age. Now, Mitty notably carried
- 20:08Speaker 1: the condition of cerebral palsy. He is diagnosed with that
- 20:12Speaker 1: at three years of age. He died on Monday in Brownsville, Texas,
- 20:17Speaker 1: where he had just moved. And this is from Sean Riley,
- 20:20Speaker 1: his representative to NBC Sports. Quote, Sadly, we can confirm
- 20:24Speaker 1: that suicide was the cause of death. It is with
- 20:27Speaker 1: profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist,
- 20:31Speaker 1: and passionate disability rights advocate, rj middy now middy's co-workers
- 20:38Speaker 1: and colleagues have mourned him and paid tribute to him
- 20:41Speaker 1: through a multitude of statements since monday brian walter white
- 20:45Speaker 1: cranston said quote i'm in deep despair as i write
- 20:48Speaker 1: this tonight rj middy my sweet son on breaking bad
- 20:51Speaker 1: has died i met him when he was only 14
- 20:54Speaker 1: years old when he was cast as walter white jr
- 20:56Speaker 1: a part he played with such joy and enthusiasm born
- 21:00Speaker 1: with cerebral palsy he never ever allowed that challenge to
- 21:03Speaker 1: be an excuse for anything He met the demanding shooting
- 21:06Speaker 1: schedule head-on with great determination. It is especially devastating to
- 21:11Speaker 1: hear that he took his own life, Cranston continued. Why?
- 21:15Speaker 1: We were texting each other a few weeks ago, figuring
- 21:17Speaker 1: out when we could meet for lunch. I don't know
- 21:20Speaker 1: if that lunch would have changed his future, but I
- 21:22Speaker 1: do know that I loved him, and I'll miss you, son.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Bob Odenkirk played Saul Goodman, says that he will remember
- 21:30Speaker 1: Mitty as a good person who shared his story and
- 21:33Speaker 1: his time to help out others. Breaking Bad actor Luis
- 21:38Speaker 1: Moncada had an interview with TMZ where they asked him
- 21:44Speaker 1: about the situation there. I actually don't believe I have
- 21:49Speaker 1: the audio, but he basically said he was being pulled
- 21:51Speaker 1: in all kinds of directions. He was very conflicted with
- 21:54Speaker 1: a lot of things that were going on that he
- 21:55Speaker 1: did not want to elaborate on because of the privacy
- 21:59Speaker 1: of obviously his family.
- 22:00Speaker 3: But I think they alluded. I think you found out
- 22:02Speaker 3: what happened, right? You know TMZ don't care about nothing.
- 22:06Speaker 3: TMZ found out. TMZ get the dirt. They will do that.
- 22:10Speaker 1: TMZ said, oh, you don't want to tell us? I bet.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Watch this.
- 22:13Speaker 1: So a TMZ report said RJ Middy's fiance wanted him
- 22:19Speaker 1: to choose between her and his mom before his death.
- 22:26Speaker 1: That's tough. Feeling that his mom was meddling in their relationship. Kennedy, yes,
- 22:35Speaker 1: let me get this right. Kennedy swore as his fiance,
- 22:37Speaker 1: RJ made his fiance, and RJ's mom did not get along.
- 22:42Speaker 1: And Kennedy wanted RJ to favor her in an ultimatum.
- 22:48Speaker 8: I was about to say, an ultimatum like that, you
- 22:53Speaker 8: know how selfish you got to be? Oh yeah, you
- 22:55Speaker 8: got to pick me or your mom. You think I'm
- 22:58Speaker 8: about to give up on a lady that I gave
- 23:00Speaker 8: birth to? I mean, that gave birth to me? Like,
- 23:02Speaker 8: come on.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Are you serious? TMZ continues. We're told RJ and Kennedy
- 23:08Speaker 1: were still together a week before he died. It's unclear
- 23:11Speaker 1: if they broke up in the days before RJ's death.
- 23:14Speaker 1: His relationship with Kennedy was weighing heavily on him and
- 23:16Speaker 1: he was outwardly distraught based on reports. Now, mind you,
- 23:19Speaker 1: this kid, like I said, diagnosed with cerebral palsy at
- 23:23Speaker 1: three years old, has publicly commented about depression and And
- 23:28Speaker 1: some of the things he was going through. And it's tough.
- 23:33Speaker 1: And this is why I say, like I wrote to
- 23:35Speaker 1: the recess bell on Sunday. I feel like, again, I'm
- 23:42Speaker 1: sure his family feels terrible now. Because he's gone. That's finality.
- 23:49Speaker 2: But I.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Can't speak on another person's relationship. but it is just
- 23:55Speaker 1: tough knowing what he was battling now. And then it's like, oh, listen,
- 24:01Speaker 1: your mom, you got to make a stand now. It's
- 24:03Speaker 1: either me or your moms. It's just tough. And I,
- 24:08Speaker 1: like I said, I alluded to the piece I wrote
- 24:10Speaker 1: about the Stephen A. Smith, Lane Johnson situation where Stephen A.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Smith basically made fun of the Eagles at Lane Johnson's
- 24:15Speaker 1: expense as Lane Johnson retired suddenly. And it's just like,
- 24:18Speaker 1: I titled the piece something very strong, like not caring
- 24:21Speaker 1: about people's mental health until they're gone.
- 24:24Speaker 3: I remember.
- 24:24Speaker 1: This is just another example, allegedly, by the reports.
- 24:28Speaker 3: I remember it was like a minute ago in the NFL.
- 24:31Speaker 3: There was a dude who missed a game because he
- 24:33Speaker 3: had a panic attack. And I remember that was a
- 24:36Speaker 3: very touchy subject to touch at the time because you
- 24:40Speaker 3: can't be insensitive to a situation like that.
- 24:42Speaker 1: And there were people who were.
- 24:44Speaker 8: Wasn't that Lane Johnson? Yeah, he had an anxiety attack
- 24:48Speaker 8: or something like that and it made him miss... A
- 24:50Speaker 8: few games.
- 24:51Speaker 1: He missed three games due to depression in 2021.
- 24:53Speaker 3: It might have been him, but I swear it was
- 24:58Speaker 3: another offensive lineman. Another offensive lineman. I think that guy
- 25:02Speaker 3: wound up retiring soon after. I'm trying to remember his name.
- 25:07Speaker 3: If I can get it. But yeah. You know, that's
- 25:11Speaker 3: like going to, when it comes to the NFL, that's
- 25:14Speaker 3: like one of like the touchiest subjects of when you
- 25:16Speaker 3: deal with that mental aspect of it. Because there's some
- 25:19Speaker 3: people who are insensitive like a Stephen A. Smith where
- 25:22Speaker 3: it's like you need to be tougher. And then it's
- 25:24Speaker 3: weird because you'll have a situation like, what's the name? Ocho,
- 25:28Speaker 3: Emmanuel Ocho, who in one instance.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Who? Who you said? Emmanuel Ocho.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Who in one instance will defend and understand what Lane
- 25:38Speaker 3: Johnson is going through. But then criticized Caleb Wilson. I mean,
- 25:43Speaker 3: Caleb Wilson for what he was going through. And it
- 25:46Speaker 3: was like, oh, you're calling him soft and everything like that.
- 25:48Speaker 3: People were calling him a hypocrite.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm like, no.
- 25:54Speaker 3: It's a funny game they play in the sports coverage world.
- 25:59Speaker 1: It's take culture. It's take culture. I wrote in the piece,
- 26:04Speaker 1: towards the end of the piece, I wrote about Stephen A.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Smith.
- 26:07Speaker 1: And just like, Stephen A. Smith. Friend of the show.
- 26:12Speaker 1: He's essentially been conditioned. If you look at his career,
- 26:15Speaker 1: he's been conditioned to be like, yo, hot takes win.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Strong opinions win. They get ratings. I get money. That's
- 26:24Speaker 1: exactly how his career has played out. So while we
- 26:29Speaker 1: can fault Stephen A. Smith for being insensitive about Lane Johnson,
- 26:32Speaker 1: I made the point, is this not the monster we created? Oh,
- 26:36Speaker 1: we love when Stephen A. Smith going after Kwame Brown,
- 26:39Speaker 1: saying he's got small hands and bad feet. He's the
- 26:41Speaker 1: worst basketball player I've ever seen. Bonafide scrub, right? We
- 26:44Speaker 1: love that. Oh, Tim Tebow, he can't throw the ball.
- 26:48Speaker 1: We love that. Kevin Durant, you don't want to make
- 26:52Speaker 1: an enemy out of me. We love all that stuff, right?
- 26:57Speaker 1: But when it comes, this is the monster we created.
- 26:59Speaker 1: I've tried to make that point.
- 27:00Speaker 5: Like, we.
- 27:01Speaker 1: We complain about Stephen A. Smith, Pat McAfee on ESPN,
- 27:04Speaker 1: or Take Culture, Frat Boy Media, all this stuff. There
- 27:07Speaker 1: is a reason why they're getting the opportunities they're getting
- 27:11Speaker 1: because people can't keep their eyes off them. They get
- 27:13Speaker 1: the highest ratings. So I made the point we got
- 27:16Speaker 1: to look inward sometimes. Hey, if we don't like this
- 27:20Speaker 1: guy or he's insensitive, don't watch him. Social media is
- 27:25Speaker 1: so funny because a retweet, a like, a repost, a share,
- 27:30Speaker 1: whatever you want to call it, it's support in some way. So,
- 27:34Speaker 1: you know, if we like and support and all this
- 27:35Speaker 1: stuff that Stephen A is doing, and like I said,
- 27:37Speaker 1: it's the monster we created. Stephen A. Smith got up
- 27:39Speaker 1: there and he was like, oh, I got it. What's
- 27:41Speaker 1: the topic? Lane Johnson walks away due to mental health?
- 27:45Speaker 1: Eagles lost their second straight game? Oh, I'm going to
- 27:47Speaker 1: kill him with this one. The Eagles are so trash,
- 27:50Speaker 1: Lane Johnson had to walk away due to his mental health.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? The Eagles are depressing their players. He, yeah, okay,
- 27:58Speaker 1: you're trying to be funny, man, but You got to
- 28:00Speaker 1: know it's a mental health matter. And he's talked about before.
- 28:05Speaker 1: He talked about his own mental health as it came
- 28:06Speaker 1: to his mom's. I just make that point, right? But
- 28:11Speaker 1: let's not, when it comes to mental health, let's not
- 28:15Speaker 1: act like, oh, you know, hey, oh, the Gen Z
- 28:18Speaker 1: guy called out of work again for mental health reasons. Oh,
- 28:21Speaker 1: this is what they do. Like, okay. Let's be a
- 28:24Speaker 1: little more considerate and be like, when you talk about
- 28:26Speaker 1: mental health, if you don't got your mental right, very, very,
- 28:29Speaker 1: little chance you have anything right in your life as well.
- 28:32Speaker 1: So let's try to be more mindful and not wait
- 28:34Speaker 1: until you hear about tragedy to be like, oh my God,
- 28:37Speaker 1: I feel so bad about all this stuff. And listen,
- 28:39Speaker 1: we've all gone through grief. We all feel that in
- 28:42Speaker 1: terms of like losing people. And you think about like, oh,
- 28:45Speaker 1: like this RJ Middy situation, everyone's now talking about all
- 28:48Speaker 1: the signs they missed. Oh, how did I miss that?
- 28:51Speaker 1: I wish I could have done this. I wish I
- 28:53Speaker 1: could have done that. And it's not to say that
- 28:56Speaker 1: Additional understanding would have changed what he wound up doing.
- 29:01Speaker 1: But damn it, it couldn't have hurt. That's all I'm saying.
