- 0:01Speaker 1: Thank you. Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show,
- 0:45Speaker 1: the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Over 13 and a half years strong. We got a
- 0:50Speaker 1: great show coming your way this week as we dive
- 0:52Speaker 1: into some Eagles talk. We're going to be getting into
- 0:54Speaker 1: some 76ers talk as well. And what we're throwing down
- 0:57Speaker 1: on the table, we got a great interview with our
- 0:59Speaker 1: guest this week, Liz Rocher from the Hit and Season podcast.
- 1:01Speaker 1: We're going to be talking about this Philadelphia Phillies team.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Eric and I are going to be talking about that
- 1:06Speaker 1: as well. And yes, my buddy Eric DeKing. And it's
- 1:09Speaker 1: good to see.
- 1:10Speaker 2: You, buddy.
- 1:10Speaker 1: We got a lot going on in the world of
- 1:11Speaker 1: Philly sports here, man.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, you might want to change the name of their
- 1:15Speaker 3: podcast just based on what the Phillies are hitting, how
- 1:18Speaker 3: they're hitting lately. Just.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I'm sure we're going to get to that.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah. Wow.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Is it bad?
- 1:25Speaker 1: It's not great as they are looking at this post season,
- 1:28Speaker 1: you know, Liz and I, I mean, we're going to,
- 1:30Speaker 1: we're going to talk about, you know, certain players on
- 1:33Speaker 1: the team who need to step up and stuff, but yeah, I'm,
- 1:37Speaker 1: I'm not necessarily hopeful that this is an organization and
- 1:40Speaker 1: team that's going to be able to go far in
- 1:42Speaker 1: the post season here.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Or if they get into the post season, that is true.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yeah, right now.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Exactly. I think they still need two games to win
- 1:50Speaker 1: at this point, but, uh, We shall see. Look, why
- 1:55Speaker 1: don't we get our discussion started off with this Philadelphia
- 1:57Speaker 1: Eagles team. Look, one of, what, about a half a
- 2:00Speaker 1: dozen teams in the league that are still undefeated. Happy
- 2:04Speaker 1: that they're undefeated. They are 2-0. Things haven't necessarily looked
- 2:08Speaker 1: great for the Eagles in these first two games as
- 2:12Speaker 1: the Sean Mannion offense still manifesting itself. The offensive line...
- 2:16Speaker 1: It is absolutely horrendous. We're certainly going to be talking
- 2:20Speaker 1: about that too. And the Eagles also made a couple
- 2:23Speaker 1: signings this week that we're going to get into. But Eric,
- 2:27Speaker 1: the running game, like I wonder if they can actually
- 2:30Speaker 1: get their mojo back because first down has been absolutely horrendous.
- 2:35Speaker 1: for this team. And one of our good friends, Dave
- 2:39Speaker 1: Mangels over at bleedinggreennation.com actually wrote a piece on this.
- 2:43Speaker 1: We were going to be talking about this. I saw
- 2:45Speaker 1: the piece. I was like, you know what? Everybody's talking
- 2:47Speaker 1: about the fact that the Eagles on early downs can't
- 2:51Speaker 1: get it done. They cannot get it done. The offense
- 2:54Speaker 1: is 28th in EPA play and 31st in both yards
- 2:59Speaker 1: per play and success rate. On first down, first down,
- 3:04Speaker 1: the Eagles have as many negative plays as they do
- 3:07Speaker 1: plays that have gained seven plus yards, which are nine each.
- 3:12Speaker 1: On their 48 first downs, they have failed to gain
- 3:15Speaker 1: yardage on 18 of them. They are horrendous on first down.
- 3:21Speaker 1: They are horrendous within the run game as well, buddy.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And look, this isn't something that's going to change overnight.
- 3:28Speaker 1: They're going to be playing a Bears team that is
- 3:31Speaker 1: not too, too terrible, of course. And yes, we if
- 3:35Speaker 1: you go back to the opposition territory pod in the feed,
- 3:38Speaker 1: you're going to see our and listen to our Eagles
- 3:41Speaker 1: Bears preview show where we talk about the trenches and
- 3:44Speaker 1: with these two teams, but man, I'm worried about the
- 3:46Speaker 1: Eagles run game. I'm worried about this offensive line and it's,
- 3:51Speaker 1: it's a cause for concern here in the beginning part
- 3:53Speaker 1: of this season, man.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I mean, I think the elephant in the room based
- 3:58Speaker 3: on this topic is the offensive line. Uh, it is
- 4:01Speaker 3: just not the same as what it used to be. Um, we're,
- 4:04Speaker 3: we're used to that stalwart front, you know, coached by
- 4:07Speaker 3: Jeff Stalin. And there was just never a concern that
- 4:10Speaker 3: that was going to be one of the strengths of
- 4:12Speaker 3: the team. And I think we're, you know, it's, it's
- 4:15Speaker 3: not a detriment yet, but, uh, it's, it's, it's shaky.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Well, it's not a detriment because Jalen hurts and this
- 4:21Speaker 1: wide receiver core are actually getting shit done on the field.
- 4:25Speaker 1: They're getting it done. Like we, I mean, I say
- 4:27Speaker 1: week after week, it's only two weeks, but still they
- 4:31Speaker 1: may not win these games without Jalen hurts and the
- 4:33Speaker 1: wide receivers doing what they did. Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 3: And it does mean the next point is, um, Jalen
- 4:38Speaker 3: hurts looks fantastic.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Like offensive line is doing him no favors. They're not
- 4:43Speaker 3: doing Saquon any favors either. Um, but, but Jalen has
- 4:47Speaker 3: been extremely competent within this new offense. And I, I
- 4:50Speaker 3: I'm thinking like maybe, maybe to boost the first down, uh,
- 4:55Speaker 3: percentages and, and just the offense overall, maybe they need
- 4:58Speaker 3: to go back to the Andy Reed era where he
- 5:00Speaker 3: openly said, like, we're going to open up the run
- 5:03Speaker 3: game using the passing game.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:05Speaker 3: And I, I, that's the route they kind of have
- 5:07Speaker 3: to go just early on until maybe the offensive line gets,
- 5:10Speaker 3: gets their feet underneath them. I think that's just the
- 5:14Speaker 3: way he's performing and the way the offense, the receivers
- 5:17Speaker 3: and Zach Ertz is back in the house.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I mean, let's get into that. The fact that Zach
- 5:22Speaker 1: Ertz is back, which honestly I do love. I mean,
- 5:25Speaker 1: it's a great storyline. One of the best tight ends
- 5:28Speaker 1: to have ever played for the Philadelphia Eagles back on
- 5:31Speaker 1: this team. Of course, Of course, coming back from an
- 5:35Speaker 1: ACL injury, and a lot of guys in the league
- 5:37Speaker 1: do it successfully, and yes, he is older, but now
- 5:40Speaker 1: with Dallas Goddard being out for as long as he
- 5:43Speaker 1: is going to be out with his MCL sprain, I
- 5:47Speaker 1: like this signing because I think it can be good
- 5:49Speaker 1: for this team overall, and I think it could be
- 5:51Speaker 1: good for the offense. Give him a little spark. Give
- 5:53Speaker 1: him a little boost.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Yeah, was Brent Selick not available? Yeah. I, I, I,
- 6:01Speaker 3: I just saw, I, you know, I, I, I just
- 6:03Speaker 3: saw the name and I was like, Oh my God,
- 6:05Speaker 3: that's right. And then I remember like he was on,
- 6:07Speaker 3: you know, the, the command that comes, um, not that
- 6:11Speaker 3: long ago. And, uh, I was like, Oh yeah, he's
- 6:13Speaker 3: still been playing, but it kind of forgot about him.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Um, I think it's a nice, I think it's a
- 6:18Speaker 3: good signing. Like what else are you going to do?
- 6:19Speaker 3: You know, the, the, the kid, what's the name? Eli Stowers.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Um, don't know if he's quite ready for that. So
- 6:26Speaker 3: it was good to bring another body in, but I'm
- 6:28Speaker 3: hoping he can, at least he can help this offense, um,
- 6:32Speaker 3: like I said, open up the running game by using
- 6:35Speaker 3: the passing game. And I think that I really think
- 6:37Speaker 3: that's what they have to do. Um, and, and they caught, they, they,
- 6:39Speaker 3: they've definitely caught some luck early on in the season.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Cause yeah, yeah. The comes are terrible. I mean, there's
- 6:44Speaker 3: not a good team and we, we faced Jaden Daniels
- 6:48Speaker 3: before he went down week two and we, and they'd
- 6:50Speaker 3: still beat them. Um, they played a really bad Titans team, uh,
- 6:55Speaker 3: last week and they had, they have the bears coming up.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Who's off. There's defense is very shaky. Um, And no
- 7:00Speaker 3: Caleb Williams. So they should be 3-0 going into week four. And,
- 7:07Speaker 3: you know, it's nice that they're playing this team without
- 7:10Speaker 3: Caleb Williams because that'll give, you know, Goddard maybe another
- 7:13Speaker 3: extra week of rest.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Or, you know, until he has to come back when,
- 7:17Speaker 3: you know, because Ertz wasn't even on a roster.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:20Speaker 3: So obviously, and if you want to talk about Kenny
- 7:23Speaker 3: Moore signing, it's the same thing. He wasn't even on
- 7:28Speaker 3: an NFL team.
- 7:30Speaker 1: 31-year-old defender. He brings nine years of experience, all with
- 7:34Speaker 1: the Indianapolis Colts. I mean, I guess you consider it.
- 7:38Speaker 1: The fact that adding some depth to a group that
- 7:41Speaker 1: has dealt with injuries, that's trying to find their footing
- 7:45Speaker 1: gives them. Look, I'm trying to be optimistic here in
- 7:47Speaker 1: terms of I think he may give some flexibility to
- 7:50Speaker 1: their secondary. But look, they waived him shortly after the
- 7:55Speaker 1: NFL draft and he spent the offseason looking for a
- 7:58Speaker 1: place and he lands here and. Uh, in Philadelphia. And I, I,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know what type of difference he's
- 8:04Speaker 1: really going to make at the end of the day,
- 8:06Speaker 1: but it's like, okay, maybe there's some flexibility in terms
- 8:09Speaker 1: of the depth here. I mean, I'm trying to be optimistic.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:13Speaker 3: I saw some reactions on Twitter. People like, yeah. And
- 8:16Speaker 3: I'm like, the Colts have the worst defense in the
- 8:18Speaker 3: league right now. Yeah. And this guy was, and they,
- 8:20Speaker 3: and they cut him. So yes, but it's good to
- 8:24Speaker 3: have depth. I mean, look, look what happened with the lions. Uh,
- 8:27Speaker 3: Vontae Maddox went out. I, I was surprised to even
- 8:30Speaker 3: hear his name that he's still in the league.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Um, but yeah, it's always good to have depth and have,
- 8:34Speaker 3: have the cap room that, how he's so good at to,
- 8:37Speaker 3: to fill in spots like that when there's someone goes down,
- 8:40Speaker 3: but yeah. Um, not expecting much. He was made the
- 8:43Speaker 3: pro wall five years ago. Um, But he's 31. I'm
- 8:47Speaker 3: assuming because he was over 30, had a hard time
- 8:50Speaker 3: finding a spot on the team. Honestly, it can't hurt.
- 8:54Speaker 3: It's paltry money for the Eagles. We'll see. Again, I'll reiterate.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Thank God we're playing the Bears on Monday night. without
- 9:07Speaker 3: their quarterback and with a pretty atrocious defense. Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Look, just really quick, going back to this Eagles offense
- 9:16Speaker 1: and specifically the offensive line, even though it's only been
- 9:19Speaker 1: two games, I don't think this is a situation where
- 9:23Speaker 1: one bad game means everything or even two bad games
- 9:28Speaker 1: from a running standpoint and offensive line standpoint. means everything,
- 9:32Speaker 1: but the fact of the matter is that the offense's
- 9:34Speaker 1: failure to gain a single first down on first down
- 9:38Speaker 1: against the commanders is really mind-boggling. It really is. This
- 9:43Speaker 1: is an offensive line and coaching issue, and you alluded
- 9:46Speaker 1: to it earlier. This is not Jalen Hurts' issue. This
- 9:49Speaker 1: is not a wide receiver issue here at all. I mean,
- 9:52Speaker 1: the Eagles are 19th in sack rate per play, 28th
- 9:56Speaker 1: in pressures per play. Short throws to beat the pressure
- 9:59Speaker 1: is is a tried and true way of masking offensive
- 10:04Speaker 1: line problems, but the Eagles' entire first down offense is
- 10:08Speaker 1: throwing short passes. So they're not trying to take a
- 10:10Speaker 1: shot down the field, which means it's just ineffective coaching
- 10:14Speaker 1: here at this point. So as good as the passing
- 10:18Speaker 1: game in general has been and what Sean Mannion has done,
- 10:21Speaker 1: which I like, a lot of pre-snap motion. We've got,
- 10:24Speaker 1: you know, trying to confuse the defense. Our wide receivers
- 10:27Speaker 1: are doing a damn good job with getting open, running
- 10:31Speaker 1: their routes. It's still these early down plays that we're
- 10:34Speaker 1: going to need to watch over the course of these
- 10:36Speaker 1: past seasons. or over the course of these next couple
- 10:38Speaker 1: of weeks here. So I don't know. Do you have
- 10:40Speaker 1: any more thoughts here?
- 10:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Yeah. Just in, in defense of the offensive line, two things. One,
- 10:47Speaker 3: the Titans have a really good front.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:51Speaker 3: And they, they, they kind of manhandled the Eagles offensive line.
- 10:54Speaker 3: So it's not the worst thing in the world. And
- 10:57Speaker 3: do you think maybe the new scheme, they're still getting
- 11:01Speaker 3: ready to still getting used to the new scheme.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I do.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Absolutely. That could be part of it too. We'd love
- 11:07Speaker 1: to know what you are thinking. If you're watching on YouTube,
- 11:10Speaker 1: leave a comment below on this Philadelphia Eagles team, what
- 11:13Speaker 1: they've done, where they're heading. We would love to hear
- 11:16Speaker 1: from you. So that being said, we're going to take
- 11:19Speaker 1: a break. And when we get back, we're going to,
- 11:21Speaker 1: we're going to dive into some Sixers talk. Haven't talked
- 11:23Speaker 1: about the Sixers, but we're going to get into this
- 11:27Speaker 1: team and what we may see specifically with the bench.
- 11:29Speaker 1: this upcoming season. Stick with us. All right, we're back.
- 11:35Speaker 1: And to dive into some more Philly sports talk here,
- 11:39Speaker 1: we are less than a month away before the NBA
- 11:41Speaker 1: season starts here. And we are all high on this
- 11:44Speaker 1: Sixers team, of course, based on the offseason. But I
- 11:47Speaker 1: think a question that a lot of us are going
- 11:49Speaker 1: to be talking about, analyzing and assessing, it should be,
- 11:53Speaker 1: you know, what bench piece is going to be really
- 11:56Speaker 1: key for this team during the 2026-2027 regular season, Eric?
- 11:58Speaker 1: Because The bench, as we know, has been absolutely atrocious
- 12:06Speaker 1: for the Sixers over the years. I mean, no qualms
- 12:11Speaker 1: about that at all. But I think when we look
- 12:13Speaker 1: at the one signing made over this offseason, Anthony Simmons,
- 12:19Speaker 1: that potential for him to become an elite bench guard
- 12:24Speaker 1: is I think that potential is obviously there. His three-point
- 12:27Speaker 1: shooting is so critical, especially when he was on the Celtics.
- 12:32Speaker 1: For me, I mean, he's the key bench piece, in
- 12:34Speaker 1: my opinion, coming into this season here. What are your
- 12:36Speaker 1: thoughts and your assessments here as we're less than a
- 12:39Speaker 1: month away?
- 12:41Speaker 3: All right, let's try this again. Anthony Simons is his name.
- 12:44Speaker 1: What did I call him? Did I call him Simmons?
- 12:46Speaker 3: God damn.
- 12:47Speaker 1: You know what? I stink. Oh, my gosh.
- 12:50Speaker 3: I think you actually put You stressed the wrong syllable
- 12:54Speaker 3: in his first name too. And you said Simmons. You
- 12:55Speaker 3: said Anfernee Simmons.
- 12:59Speaker 1: I hate me.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Anfernee Simmons. I hate me.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Unreal. Unreal. I mean, I told everybody why this happens
- 13:07Speaker 1: because I'll be reading something and it just doesn't click
- 13:11Speaker 1: in my brain because I'm like actually reading something that I,
- 13:15Speaker 1: you know what? I should just, I'm going to take
- 13:17Speaker 1: this coaster and just throw it.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Oh my God. Jeff, calm down. You need to call somebody.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. Okay. And Fernie.
- 13:33Speaker 3: And Fernie Simons. And Fernie Simons. Okay. Anyway.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Key bench.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:40Speaker 3: The bench is, is, has been, I'll use the word again,
- 13:45Speaker 3: paltry in the past, past few seasons. And it, it's
- 13:50Speaker 3: always been one of those spots in Philly sports being
- 13:53Speaker 3: a big Sixers fan where you text your friends. Like
- 13:56Speaker 3: I have tight Sixers friends that we text all the
- 13:59Speaker 3: time about the Sixers. And when they, they'll, they'll sign
- 14:02Speaker 3: a piece for the bench. We'll just pour over their
- 14:05Speaker 3: stats and like what they do well. And we're like,
- 14:07Speaker 3: you know what? Good signing. This is going to be
- 14:09Speaker 3: a good bench piece. And every time it's like 50%
- 14:12Speaker 3: of the time, I was like, no, it wasn't. We're
- 14:13Speaker 3: just trying to convince ourselves it was, um, They, I
- 14:17Speaker 3: think the consensus is like this. They have one of
- 14:19Speaker 3: the top three benches in, in all of basketball going
- 14:23Speaker 3: into the season.
- 14:23Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 14:24Speaker 3: They signed some really good veterans. Uh, we didn't talk
- 14:27Speaker 3: about KCP. Um, Katavia's Caldwell Pope.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Uh, great defender. I, you know, he's probably lost a
- 14:34Speaker 3: step in the past. You know, he's like, I think
- 14:35Speaker 3: he's 32, 33. Um, I knew he was going to
- 14:39Speaker 3: come eventually because he's one of LeBron's guys. He loves LeBron.
- 14:43Speaker 3: I would too. I would definitely ride that man's coattails financially.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Great pickup. We haven't really talked about LeBaron Phylon Jr.,
- 14:53Speaker 3: the guy they drafted. I think he's going to be
- 14:56Speaker 3: instant offense off the bench along with Anthony Simons. I
- 14:59Speaker 3: think they have really good They've really, really good defender
- 15:02Speaker 3: in case he peeking off the bench and between Simons and,
- 15:05Speaker 3: and file on, that's going to be really good offensively.
- 15:08Speaker 3: But I, I think the guy is going to be,
- 15:10Speaker 3: it's going to be the key was the signing before
- 15:14Speaker 3: the trade in a LeBron thing. Dean Wade.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Okay.
- 15:17Speaker 3: I think is going to be so key for this team. Okay.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Not just because of the bench. Cause I mean, having
- 15:22Speaker 3: him come off the, coming off the bench and giving
- 15:24Speaker 3: you 25 minutes is huge. I mean, he was a
- 15:26Speaker 3: starter for the Cavs last year.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Do you think more from a defensive standpoint too?
- 15:30Speaker 2: Both.
- 15:30Speaker 3: I mean, he's a good three point shooter.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:32Speaker 3: He'll, he'll definitely thrive in, in the offense because they're
- 15:36Speaker 3: going to leave him alone. Like if you got edge
- 15:38Speaker 3: comb LeBron and, and, and Maxie out there, who the
- 15:42Speaker 3: hell's going to card weight in the corner? He'll be
- 15:45Speaker 3: wide open for threes and he's a really good defender.
- 15:47Speaker 3: He's like six, nine, six, 10 big guy. And he's
- 15:50Speaker 3: going to, he's going to start a bunch, you know,
- 15:53Speaker 3: he's going to fill in for pretty much anytime Brown
- 15:56Speaker 3: or LeBron aren't playing. So, I think he's the absolute
- 15:59Speaker 3: key of the entire bench, but it's, everyone's going to,
- 16:03Speaker 3: everyone's going to thrive basically from the strength of the
- 16:07Speaker 3: starting lineup. Now, like I'm hoping Adam Bona, his basketball
- 16:10Speaker 3: IQ will go up a little bit because it can't,
- 16:13Speaker 3: it can't go any lower. He's not, not the most
- 16:16Speaker 3: basketball smart player I've ever seen, but yeah, they, they,
- 16:19Speaker 3: they have, they have a really solid bench and you know,
- 16:22Speaker 3: they're going to get a veteran or, another veteran or
- 16:24Speaker 3: so at the buyout, you know, in the buyout time
- 16:27Speaker 3: in like February or March. So yeah, the bench I'm
- 16:30Speaker 3: not worried about this year. Yeah.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And it's amazing that we can actually say that. And
- 16:34Speaker 1: I think of course with Embiid, you know, in, in
- 16:37Speaker 1: the health issues he consistently has, and we're going to
- 16:39Speaker 1: see him, This year.
- 16:40Speaker 3: That's putting it lightly. Yeah, we're going to say it. No,
- 16:43Speaker 3: his health issues.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Yes.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Every year there's a new issue.
- 16:49Speaker 1: But you mentioned Adem Bona. So for two years, I mean,
- 16:53Speaker 1: he's displayed, I think, flashes of promise. And he's also
- 16:59Speaker 1: made a ton of miscues. You know, like we say here.
- 17:03Speaker 1: You can't fall out of a basement window, and he
- 17:05Speaker 1: certainly can't. I think he can only grow. But do
- 17:07Speaker 1: you think that growth is going to be enough for
- 17:09Speaker 1: this team when Embiid is going to be out? Because,
- 17:12Speaker 1: I mean, that's going to be one of the storylines
- 17:14Speaker 1: this coming season when it comes to center position on
- 17:18Speaker 1: this team here. Can he finally become a stronger defensive
- 17:23Speaker 1: rebounder as well? That's something I'm going to be looking for,
- 17:28Speaker 1: especially early in the season.
- 17:29Speaker 3: Yeah, and the nice thing is with the roster they've built,
- 17:33Speaker 3: They have so much flexibility that, you know, I can't
- 17:36Speaker 3: see Adam Bona playing 25, 30 minutes or 25 minutes
- 17:40Speaker 3: a game at the backup center spot because you can
- 17:44Speaker 3: really play around with your spot. Like, there's a lineup
- 17:48Speaker 3: where for maybe like four or five minutes, you could
- 17:50Speaker 3: have LeBron as your center.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 17:53Speaker 3: And just surrounded with three-point shooters. You could have Dean
- 17:56Speaker 3: Wade at the center spot. You know, he's 6'10, and
- 17:59Speaker 3: just go small and quicker. So I... I'm hoping that's
- 18:04Speaker 3: kind of what Nick Nurse is looking at because you
- 18:06Speaker 3: can kind of help nullify Adam Bona's boners that he
- 18:12Speaker 3: has quite often in the game.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Yes.
- 18:17Speaker 3: And we 100,000 times talk about how many games is
- 18:19Speaker 3: it going to be going to give you? I mean,
- 18:22Speaker 3: I've heard people say, just play him once a week
- 18:26Speaker 3: and have him healthy going into the playoffs. Yes. Not
- 18:29Speaker 3: the worst idea in the world. I mean, if LeBron
- 18:33Speaker 3: gives you 60 games, which he probably won't, I'm thinking
- 18:35Speaker 3: like 55.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I was going to say 50, probably.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Yeah, but the Brown-Maxie-Edgecombe combo, I don't think you have
- 18:43Speaker 3: to run LeBron and beat into the ground. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's going to be fun to watch. Let us
- 18:50Speaker 1: know what you're thinking about this Sixers team. Shoot us
- 18:52Speaker 1: off an email, PhiladelphiaSportsTable at gmail.com or leave us a
- 18:56Speaker 1: comment below if you're watching on YouTube. What do you
- 18:59Speaker 1: think about this upcoming season? We'd love to hear from you.
- 19:03Speaker 1: And let's shift over now to the Philadelphia Phillies because
- 19:06Speaker 1: the Phillies here, Eric, are just hanging on by a thread.
- 19:10Speaker 1: My gosh. I believe they need to win two games
- 19:13Speaker 1: at this point to actually make it into the postseason.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I'm going to be talking to Liz Roescher from the
- 19:18Speaker 1: Hit and Season podcast in a bit about just the
- 19:23Speaker 1: chances of what they can or what they may not
- 19:25Speaker 1: be able to do during the course of this postseason.
- 19:29Speaker 1: So if they make it. So I just the batting
- 19:32Speaker 1: is just absolutely infuriating right now as we were at
- 19:36Speaker 1: the end of September here. I know you had had
- 19:39Speaker 1: some stats that you wanted to actually dive into here
- 19:42Speaker 1: as well. It's incredible how inconsistent this team actually is.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I sent you this tweet from John Clark. uh
- 19:50Speaker 3: this morning and uh yeah Schwarber Turner Harper hitting combined
- 19:54Speaker 3: 220 in September Real Muto's 0 for 26 his last
- 19:57Speaker 3: 26 at bats And Brandon Marsh, the all-star, uh, starting.
- 20:03Speaker 1: He did hit a home run a few nights ago.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Yeah. Batting 159 in September. He's batting 262 after the all-star.
- 20:11Speaker 3: I think the all-star game, he was batting 320 leading
- 20:13Speaker 3: the national league. Yep. Uh, he's dropped what? 80 was
- 20:18Speaker 3: at 60 points.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:20Speaker 1: That is falling off a ledge. That is so incredible.
- 20:25Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 20:25Speaker 1: I don't ever remember this happening to a Phillies player ever.
- 20:29Speaker 3: That's like the Alfred Hitchcock vertigo movie where he's just
- 20:33Speaker 3: Jimmy Stewart's is falling down the stair. Like, yeah, just
- 20:36Speaker 3: tumbling into the ether. Um, the whole team is just,
- 20:40Speaker 3: it doesn't, does not look very good on the, on
- 20:43Speaker 3: the upside is, um, For them to clinch, I think
- 20:46Speaker 3: if they win today and Arizona loses or San Diego loses,
- 20:50Speaker 3: I think they clinch a spot. I think they clinch
- 20:52Speaker 3: the last spot.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I think they're going to get in. I do.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Me too.
- 20:56Speaker 1: But it still would not surprise me because we get
- 20:59Speaker 1: the rug pulled out from us all the time as
- 21:02Speaker 1: Philly sports fans. And yes, I know that our teams
- 21:06Speaker 1: are relevant and this and that. But still, we talk
- 21:07Speaker 1: about it here. but still it wouldn't surprise me if
- 21:10Speaker 1: something were to happen where it's like, wow, this is
- 21:12Speaker 1: going to come down to the last freaking game of
- 21:14Speaker 1: the season. You know, it wouldn't surprise me at all.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Well, I mean, they're not playing how you would want
- 21:21Speaker 3: a team to be playing going into the playoffs.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 21:24Speaker 3: I mean, just look at the team surrounding them. Like the,
- 21:27Speaker 3: the two other wildcard team, the Cubs and Padres are
- 21:29Speaker 3: hot as hell.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I mean, Paul, uh, PCA for the Cubs is probably
- 21:33Speaker 3: gonna be the MVP of the league.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:36Speaker 3: And, uh, Yeah, the Dodgers are the Dodgers. The Braves
- 21:39Speaker 3: are really good. They smacked the Phillies around this year.
- 21:43Speaker 3: And I think, what, the Brewers get a bye in
- 21:47Speaker 3: the first? Is that how it works?
- 21:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Who's the other team?
- 21:52Speaker 1: The Brewer? Oh, my gosh. Why am I forgetting off
- 21:56Speaker 1: the top of my head?
- 21:56Speaker 3: I think I said it. Yeah, Dodgers. Dodgers. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 1: So I.
- 22:01Speaker 3: I think we're probably the worst team out of those
- 22:05Speaker 3: seven teams we just discussed, including the Brewers. Right now,
- 22:09Speaker 3: we're like the worst team to be in the playoffs
- 22:11Speaker 3: in the National League. I'm going to use the term again,
- 22:16Speaker 3: offense is paltry. And we have two really good starters.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Lazaro's back, thank God, after that. The bullpen did well
- 22:25Speaker 3: last night after the first time in forever in a
- 22:28Speaker 3: four one loss, unfortunately. So it's, yeah, it's, it's not looking,
- 22:32Speaker 3: it's a little bleak.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I'm going to be talking to Liz
- 22:36Speaker 1: about this as well, Eric, but like at the end
- 22:38Speaker 1: of the day, it's going to all come down to pitching.
- 22:40Speaker 1: It's going to come down to the starting pitching here.
- 22:43Speaker 1: And like, what is our level of confidence in these pictures?
- 22:47Speaker 1: You know what the starting rotation is. is going to
- 22:49Speaker 1: be in the, in the post season. Can they get
- 22:52Speaker 1: it done? They're just going to need the run support.
- 22:54Speaker 1: And that is what is so enraging right now. When
- 22:57Speaker 1: you talk about these key players and what their batting
- 23:01Speaker 1: average is, what you just mentioned, I just cannot believe
- 23:05Speaker 1: that I like, and I wonder, I wonder how much
- 23:08Speaker 1: of this is actually like a sports psychology type of thing.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Like these guys are so good on paper. This is
- 23:14Speaker 1: a good team on paper. but it hasn't translated over
- 23:18Speaker 1: to the field at all. It just doesn't, you know,
- 23:20Speaker 1: it's incredible.
- 23:21Speaker 3: But their one ray of hope is that their top
- 23:23Speaker 3: three starters, especially in a five game series that they're
- 23:26Speaker 3: going to have in the first round.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Are, are as it's as solid as you can get
- 23:31Speaker 3: in baseball. Maybe the Dodgers are better. I wouldn't even
- 23:35Speaker 3: say the Brewers are better because after, after Henderson and Ms, it's,
- 23:39Speaker 3: you know, they don't have the best pitching.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 23:42Speaker 3: So to have Wheeler, And Sanchez and Lizardo going into
- 23:47Speaker 3: a five-game series, I feel pretty confident that you just
- 23:50Speaker 3: got to eke out. three to four runs.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 23:55Speaker 3: It's such a bummer, but yeah, that's, that's, that's the
- 23:58Speaker 3: one thing as a Phillies fan, you can latch onto
- 24:00Speaker 3: is we have three awesome starters. That's pretty much there's
- 24:03Speaker 3: what else, what else is, are we happy about?
- 24:05Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 24:06Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I mean, is there a chance that this team can
- 24:09Speaker 1: get hot? Absolutely. There is like towards the end of
- 24:12Speaker 1: the season, there's a chance it's constantly hot and cold
- 24:15Speaker 1: with this team. It is with the bats. I should
- 24:17Speaker 1: say it's constantly hot and cold. There's no consistency at all.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Right now, the Phillies are that guy that refuses to
- 24:24Speaker 3: turn his heat on, even though it's 35 degrees. It's
- 24:28Speaker 3: like one more day. We can make it. We don't
- 24:30Speaker 3: need to get hot yet. Like, I don't need the
- 24:32Speaker 3: heat yet. So it's like if they're going to do it,
- 24:34Speaker 3: they better do it soon.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Absolutely. All right. Great way to end the first half
- 24:38Speaker 1: of this podcast episode here. Buddy, I'm gonna let you go.
- 24:42Speaker 1: We're going to talk to Liz Rocher here. Any final
- 24:45Speaker 1: thoughts as we're moving along here?
- 24:49Speaker 3: I'm excited for the Sixers season. I really, really am.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I'm excited for the Flyers, too. We've seen some Flyers hockey, too.
- 24:55Speaker 3: They lost their preseason games, though.
- 24:57Speaker 2: I know.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I saw that on Twitter a little bit. What the
- 25:02Speaker 3: hell's happening? Their first game was at the Giants Center,
- 25:05Speaker 3: which is near my house. It was barely a real game.
- 25:08Speaker 3: Calm down, everybody.
- 25:11Speaker 1: All right. Sounds good, buddy. I'm going to let you go.
- 25:13Speaker 1: We've got Liz Rocher coming. We're going to take a break.
- 25:15Speaker 1: We'll be back in just a bit. And now on
- 25:20Speaker 1: the table.
- 25:23Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Joining us now from the hit and season podcast. I
- 25:27Speaker 1: love listening to her and her co-hosts on Apple podcast.
- 25:31Speaker 1: You can subscribe on whatever podcast platform you're listening to
- 25:34Speaker 1: us on. They're on the YouTubes as well. Again, just
- 25:38Speaker 1: search out the hit and season podcast. We've got our
- 25:40Speaker 1: friend Liz Rocher. Liz, thanks so much for jumping on
- 25:43Speaker 1: here to talk about this Phillies team with us, man.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Right down to the wire here, right?
- 25:48Speaker 2: Absolutely. It's my pleasure as always to be here talking
- 25:51Speaker 2: to you about Philly's stuff here at the end of
- 25:54Speaker 2: most things.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Really, I mean, reflecting on 2026 with this team really
- 26:00Speaker 1: has been, of course, up and down. I mean, that's
- 26:01Speaker 1: what this team does to us every single year. It's
- 26:03Speaker 1: always up and down. You know, we've got some really
- 26:06Speaker 1: great hot streaks that we can reference. We've got some
- 26:09Speaker 1: real cold streaks that we can look at as well. But,
- 26:12Speaker 1: you know, when I see this The 2026 season and
- 26:17Speaker 1: what it really has been, Liz, two words, not surprising.
- 26:23Speaker 1: You know, I mean, for me, it's like not surprising.
- 26:25Speaker 1: I mean, is that kind of how you feel in
- 26:26Speaker 1: a way? Yeah.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I mean, the way that they've played the whole year,
- 26:31Speaker 2: it hasn't really been consistent. It never really is. We're
- 26:34Speaker 2: not the Brewers.
- 26:35Speaker 3: Yep.
- 26:36Speaker 2: And it's not surprising because this is just the way
- 26:42Speaker 2: the Phillies should get into October. where if they've played
- 26:47Speaker 2: the whole year this way, you know, they have to
- 26:49Speaker 2: be scrambling a little bit.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Yeah, they do.
- 26:52Speaker 1: They do. That's what this team gives us fans every
- 26:54Speaker 1: single year, it seems here at this point. But look,
- 26:58Speaker 1: we're less than a week away from the postseason, and
- 27:01Speaker 1: the Phillies are still fighting to get in, basically, as
- 27:04Speaker 1: of us recording this. I mean, they are in the
- 27:06Speaker 1: third wildcard spot as of us recording this. And I believe,
- 27:09Speaker 1: if I'm not mistaken, Liz, again, recording this on Wednesday
- 27:13Speaker 1: here on the 23rd of September here, believe the magic
- 27:15Speaker 1: number is two wins for them to get in. Am
- 27:18Speaker 1: I correct with that at this point? I think it is.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I think it's two wins.
- 27:23Speaker 2: It is too.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Yeah. So I mean, we're going to go along with
- 27:28Speaker 1: this discussion as though the Phillies are going to get
- 27:31Speaker 1: into the playoff picture and the post season. But at
- 27:34Speaker 1: the end of the day, do you think they're actually
- 27:35Speaker 1: going to get there? And if they're going to get there,
- 27:37Speaker 1: how does this happen?
- 27:38Speaker 2: I mean, I do. They're, I was looking at the
- 27:42Speaker 2: standings and the Diamondbacks are still four games back, even
- 27:46Speaker 2: though they've won three in a row. So I don't
- 27:49Speaker 2: think there's a chance they'll catch up in the next
- 27:51Speaker 2: six games there are to play. I mean, stupider things
- 27:53Speaker 2: have happened, but. The right now, I John always John Stolnes,
- 28:00Speaker 2: my one of my co-hosts is always has like the
- 28:02Speaker 2: tiebreakers in his head. I don't remember any of that.
- 28:05Speaker 2: But currently, the Phillies are in the first, second and
- 28:08Speaker 2: third wildcard spots because they are tied with the Cubs
- 28:11Speaker 2: and the Padres at eighty seven.
- 28:12Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 28:14Speaker 2: That's wild, especially when you look at the Cubs like
- 28:17Speaker 2: their run differentials plus one forty six, which is wild.
- 28:21Speaker 2: They they should not be up here.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:23Speaker 2: They should be somewhere else. So it's really, it's an
- 28:26Speaker 2: incredible story for the Cubs who I hate and would
- 28:29Speaker 2: like the Phillies to be.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Absolutely. And look, I think the question that we have
- 28:33Speaker 1: all been asking all of us, Phillies fans, um, as
- 28:37Speaker 1: we've been assessing the season again, you know, you talked about,
- 28:40Speaker 1: and I mentioned too, just inconsistency. It has not been
- 28:44Speaker 1: a consistent season for this, for this crew in general.
- 28:48Speaker 1: We're trying to assess whether or not the Phillies are
- 28:50Speaker 1: actually built for October. So as we dive into this, Liz,
- 28:56Speaker 1: what characteristics does this team have that can particularly translate
- 29:01Speaker 1: well into playoff baseball? What are your thoughts here?
- 29:05Speaker 2: Well, they've got big players. They've got big names. They've
- 29:09Speaker 2: got a lot of guys that they could depend on.
- 29:11Speaker 2: I mean, The question is whether they'll come through, whether
- 29:16Speaker 2: those guys will actually do what they're supposed to do.
- 29:18Speaker 2: But on paper, they are built for October. They've got
- 29:21Speaker 2: like a killer closer. They've got great guys in the rotation.
- 29:25Speaker 2: They've got Bryce Harper and Trey Turner and Kyle Schwarber
- 29:29Speaker 2: and all that up in their lineup. Like on paper,
- 29:31Speaker 2: they are built for October. In reality, it's a little different. But,
- 29:36Speaker 2: you know, looking, I've been spending some time looking at
- 29:39Speaker 2: the American League and what an absolute mess. Disgusting, horrible
- 29:45Speaker 2: mess it is. They've got one team at 96 wins.
- 29:48Speaker 2: They've got another team at 90 wins. And those are
- 29:51Speaker 2: both in the AL East. That's the Rays and the Yankees.
- 29:54Speaker 2: The Yankees are in the wild card because the Rays
- 29:57Speaker 2: are so far ahead. And then the winners of the
- 29:59Speaker 2: Central and the West are 82-75 the Guardians and 78-79 Astros.
- 30:05Speaker 2: What a garbage division.
- 30:06Speaker 1: It does stink. It really does.
- 30:09Speaker 2: There is a team winning a division that is under
- 30:13Speaker 2: 500 at this moment.
- 30:14Speaker 1: It's incredible.
- 30:14Speaker 2: It's three and seven in their last 10. Like you
- 30:17Speaker 2: look at the, the guardians and the Astros, like, are
- 30:20Speaker 2: they built for, you know, October? Right.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 30:24Speaker 2: No. And if you look at the, the wild card,
- 30:27Speaker 2: it is the Yankees, the red socks and the white
- 30:30Speaker 2: socks who are 81 and 76, which is incredible.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Thinking about what they've done, but like it's, that's another
- 30:38Speaker 2: weak division. Like, are they built for October? It's a question.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 30:42Speaker 2: The Phillies are definitely built better for October than those teams.
- 30:49Speaker 1: I like how you put that built better for October
- 30:53Speaker 1: than some of these teams. And like, and it's so
- 30:56Speaker 1: interesting what you just said, and we're all thinking about
- 30:58Speaker 1: it all the time, this Phillies team so good on paper,
- 31:02Speaker 1: But that doesn't always translate over to the field. And
- 31:06Speaker 1: we're just trying to assess it year after year after
- 31:09Speaker 1: year as to why this happens. Why that this is
- 31:14Speaker 1: still a prevalent theme of an amazing team on paper
- 31:18Speaker 1: but doesn't always translate over. to the mound, to the field,
- 31:22Speaker 1: to the infield, the outfield, whatever it is. And I
- 31:26Speaker 1: wonder why, because if you're a guy like Dave Dombrowski,
- 31:31Speaker 1: who is putting together a team year after year, you
- 31:35Speaker 1: want the best team on paper, right? You want the
- 31:36Speaker 1: best team on paper. But it must be, there must
- 31:40Speaker 1: be some, and again, I'm not trying to be a
- 31:42Speaker 1: Dave Dombrowski apologist, because I remember I was on the
- 31:44Speaker 1: Hit and Season podcast with John a couple months ago,
- 31:47Speaker 1: and I sounded like a Dave Dombrowski apologist.
- 31:50Speaker 2: We were angry at Dave at that point. Exactly.
- 31:54Speaker 1: But I still keep in mind that he has gotten
- 31:56Speaker 1: this team to some sort of relevance within the National
- 31:59Speaker 1: League over these years, and there's something to be said
- 32:01Speaker 1: for that. However... going from the paper to the field.
- 32:06Speaker 1: I don't think anybody can actually have that crystal ball
- 32:08Speaker 1: to see how it's going to manifest itself. And I
- 32:12Speaker 1: wonder how do we begin to actually assess that, you know,
- 32:17Speaker 1: assessing what is an amazing team on paper and why
- 32:20Speaker 1: that consistency just isn't there. It's a, it's mind boggling.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Now I'm going to say something controversial and people will
- 32:27Speaker 2: not believe me, but I honestly think that there is proof.
- 32:31Speaker 2: I believe that, There is something happening in the air,
- 32:34Speaker 2: in the area. There is a curse. There is something.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Maybe it's scientific. Maybe it's spiritual. I don't know. But
- 32:40Speaker 2: there's no reason for this to happen.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Luis Nariz comes to Philadelphia. Yeah. He's not bad, but
- 32:47Speaker 2: he just doesn't do what he's supposed to do.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Like there are memories of that from years and years.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Remember his Drupal Cabrera. He was amazing. Whatever year that was.
- 32:58Speaker 2: And then the Phillies traded for him and he stunk
- 33:01Speaker 2: straight up.
- 33:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:03Speaker 2: This happens. This happens all the time. And I don't
- 33:06Speaker 2: know if it's, I'll say, I have no idea if
- 33:09Speaker 2: it happens like this in other, you know, in other
- 33:11Speaker 2: cities to other teams, but it really feels endemic to
- 33:15Speaker 2: the Phillies. And like, it's, It's a question that none
- 33:18Speaker 2: of us can answer because it's really wild.
- 33:21Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 33:21Speaker 2: You know, it might be spiritual, it might be scientific.
- 33:24Speaker 2: It may just be the way the Phillies are. Yeah.
- 33:27Speaker 2: You know, you look at the Phillies long-term and they
- 33:30Speaker 2: have never been a team that has drafted well or
- 33:33Speaker 2: had a good farm system.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Yes.
- 33:34Speaker 2: They just haven't. Like there's a tiny bit of time
- 33:37Speaker 2: where they drafted insanely well and had a bunch of
- 33:40Speaker 2: good players fall into their lap and they were good
- 33:42Speaker 2: enough players to take what they have and learn and
- 33:45Speaker 2: and make their way up and be superstar players. But
- 33:48Speaker 2: that not what is rarer than rare. Right.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Those days are gone. Those days are gone.
- 33:54Speaker 2: And the Phillies are just not been good enough there.
- 33:57Speaker 2: And I think eventually you have to say like, all right,
- 34:01Speaker 2: this is not our specialty. Yeah. We need to make
- 34:03Speaker 2: sure we need to strengthen this up as much as
- 34:05Speaker 2: we can, but we need to realize that this is
- 34:07Speaker 2: not our bread and butter. Yeah. And, unfortunately with just
- 34:11Speaker 2: signing players to come here and then inexplicably sucking, you know,
- 34:16Speaker 2: there isn't a thing you can do with that. Right.
- 34:19Speaker 2: You know, there, you know, every team has different tools
- 34:23Speaker 2: that they use to evaluate players before they come to
- 34:26Speaker 2: their city. But in reality, they all pretty much have
- 34:31Speaker 2: the same tools. There isn't one team that's doing a
- 34:33Speaker 2: ton better than everyone else. And so like you, there's
- 34:37Speaker 2: really no rhyme or reason to it. I would love
- 34:40Speaker 2: to find out why, you know, like Trey Turner is
- 34:43Speaker 2: like the worst guy ever.
- 34:45Speaker 1: No, it's like, I remember the day when, when we
- 34:48Speaker 1: all heard the announcement that he was going to be
- 34:50Speaker 1: a Philadelphia Philly. We're like, wow. And the, the amount
- 34:53Speaker 1: of years too. Wow. He's going to be on the
- 34:55Speaker 1: team for this long. Fantastic. This is great. Let's go. Yes,
- 34:59Speaker 1: let's go. And we know what it's been. And I
- 35:03Speaker 1: do wonder too, um, Whether it's something spiritual, whether it's
- 35:07Speaker 1: something in the air, whether it's something in the water
- 35:08Speaker 1: you were talking about. I wonder if it's this thing
- 35:11Speaker 1: where they know that they're supposed to be good. And
- 35:14Speaker 1: then they'll crap the bed and say, oh, we're not
- 35:17Speaker 1: really all that good, I guess. And then they'll have
- 35:20Speaker 1: a few outings where, wow, okay, yeah, we really are good.
- 35:23Speaker 1: And it's just the mental gymnastics, the sports psychology that...
- 35:28Speaker 1: I don't think it's enough do in terms of, you know,
- 35:30Speaker 1: national media, you know, sports psychology. And I think sports
- 35:34Speaker 1: psychology has really played a huge role in what the
- 35:38Speaker 1: Phillies have become and what they have not become either.
- 35:41Speaker 2: So I think it, I've been, I've been saying that
- 35:44Speaker 2: for years, actually. I don't think the Phillies take that
- 35:48Speaker 2: seriously enough and great. I don't know what they do
- 35:51Speaker 2: on the inside, but I also feel like they have
- 35:53Speaker 2: a bunch of guys who might be resistant to it. Yeah. Yeah. considering. Um,
- 35:58Speaker 2: and to me, that's like, this is a choice that
- 36:02Speaker 2: the organization has to make. Do we bend to the
- 36:04Speaker 2: will of our very famous, highly paid players, or do
- 36:07Speaker 2: we decide to do something for the best of the
- 36:10Speaker 2: betterment of the team? And these guys have to go
- 36:12Speaker 2: along because I'm your boss. And I say, so man, right.
- 36:16Speaker 2: So I would love it if they'd if they took
- 36:19Speaker 2: that more seriously, cause I think, you know, you see
- 36:21Speaker 2: the guy's expressions, you see how they act and that
- 36:25Speaker 2: is stuff that can be improved. Like I'd love to
- 36:27Speaker 2: know what the brewers do.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:30Speaker 2: What do they do? Because they don't just, you know,
- 36:32Speaker 2: draft and sign players on an equilibrium. They're all different personalities.
- 36:36Speaker 2: So what do they do to keep spirits up, you know,
- 36:40Speaker 2: to keep mentally themselves in line enough so they don't
- 36:43Speaker 2: make eight billion mistakes on the field?
- 36:45Speaker 1: Exactly. Exactly. Well, look, folks, we are going to take
- 36:48Speaker 1: a break real quick and we get back. We're going
- 36:50Speaker 1: to assess some players in terms of, you know, what
- 36:53Speaker 1: they are going to perhaps look like. during a post season.
- 36:58Speaker 1: I don't, I dare to say run, but during this
- 37:00Speaker 1: upcoming post season. So we are going to take a break.
- 37:03Speaker 1: And when we come back, we got more Phillies talk
- 37:05Speaker 1: coming your way. All right. We're back with our good friend,
- 37:10Speaker 1: Liz Rocher from the hitting season podcast and get some,
- 37:14Speaker 1: get some promos out there where folks can find you
- 37:16Speaker 1: on the interwebs as well. And what, and what you're
- 37:19Speaker 1: doing online. Sure.
- 37:21Speaker 2: You can find me on Blue Sky at Liz Rocher, R-O-S-C-H-E-R.
- 37:27Speaker 2: I'm usually just angrily posting about the Phillies or the
- 37:31Speaker 2: world or whatever. Praising the authors that I work with
- 37:36Speaker 2: at Sabre, Society for American Baseball Research. I'm the editor
- 37:40Speaker 2: of the Baseball Research Journal. Um, if you are a member,
- 37:44Speaker 2: if you're not a member, um, you can come on
- 37:46Speaker 2: and read it on the Sabre site. You can contribute
- 37:50Speaker 2: an article, you know, I will tell you that you
- 37:53Speaker 2: have to become a Sabre member to contribute, but you
- 37:56Speaker 2: can contribute the article and get all sorts of feedback
- 37:59Speaker 2: from me and peer reviewers. It's a really fun process.
- 38:02Speaker 2: I love doing it. Um, I love reading all sorts
- 38:05Speaker 2: of stuff about baseball and, There is a shortage of
- 38:08Speaker 2: Phillies articles out there. Please give me your research, your excitement,
- 38:12Speaker 2: the things that you've thought about. I want to know.
- 38:15Speaker 1: There you go.
- 38:15Speaker 2: There have been a couple of good Phillies articles over
- 38:19Speaker 2: the past year, but I want more. I'm a homer
- 38:23Speaker 2: and would love to publish more Phillies articles than anything else.
- 38:27Speaker 1: You heard Liz, folks. You heard her. Get on it
- 38:29Speaker 1: right now. Get on it. Absolutely. And look, as we're
- 38:33Speaker 1: as we're talking about what this postseason may look like
- 38:35Speaker 1: for the Phillies here, Liz, you know, consistency of the offense,
- 38:38Speaker 1: I mean, is really going to be key. And we've
- 38:40Speaker 1: seen it in various spurts throughout the season with various
- 38:44Speaker 1: players where the consistency is there, and then sometimes it
- 38:46Speaker 1: goes away. But moving beyond Bryce Harper, moving beyond Kyle
- 38:51Speaker 1: Schwarber and their importance in terms of batting, I was
- 38:55Speaker 1: hoping we can get into some guys that we're going
- 38:57Speaker 1: to need to see more consistency from if the Phillies
- 39:00Speaker 1: are going to make any sort of run here. So
- 39:04Speaker 1: I'm wondering, what do we need to see from the
- 39:06Speaker 1: following players? I'd love to start off with Trey Turner.
- 39:09Speaker 1: What do we need to see from him in terms
- 39:12Speaker 1: of offensive consistency here?
- 39:15Speaker 2: He just needs to be better, man. He is not great.
- 39:19Speaker 2: I'm looking at his September stats. I pulled up the
- 39:21Speaker 2: September stats for him on game by game, and I'm
- 39:24Speaker 2: just looking at the whole month and he's hitting two 40.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Got to be better than two 40.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Exactly. And what's weird is he's been hitting around two
- 39:34Speaker 2: 40 the entire season.
- 39:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Like the whole, like he got his highs to
- 39:40Speaker 2: 60 and then like in early, like in April, it
- 39:43Speaker 2: was like two 94, but that doesn't even count.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:46Speaker 2: But like, it's all been slowly, steadily just changing. like
- 39:52Speaker 2: crumbling to this one equilibrium place where he is it's
- 39:55Speaker 2: 240 like that is not good enough yeah it's just
- 39:58Speaker 2: straight up not good enough like i'm not going to
- 40:00Speaker 2: talk anything about his salary or whatever but for a
- 40:03Speaker 2: baseball player of his caliber of his years of what's
- 40:06Speaker 2: expected of him that's not good enough and i don't
- 40:08Speaker 2: know what to say to him other than stop sucking Yeah, absolutely.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Because, I mean, I don't know what it is with him.
- 40:15Speaker 2: He said it's the same tone. It's the same things
- 40:17Speaker 2: he says over and over. And like that is get angry.
- 40:20Speaker 2: This is just not good enough. Exactly. No one thinks
- 40:22Speaker 2: you care.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Exactly. We're not going to be given any more standing ovations. Right.
- 40:26Speaker 1: I mean, to get him where he needs to be.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Not at all. And like moving on, there's another guy who.
- 40:32Speaker 1: I think a lot of us had so much hope
- 40:34Speaker 1: for in terms of where his career trajectory may go.
- 40:37Speaker 1: And if he was going to be a long, long time, Philadelphia, Philly,
- 40:40Speaker 1: and we don't know if that's going to happen, but
- 40:42Speaker 1: Bryson Stott here, I mean, what do we need to
- 40:44Speaker 1: see from him in terms of, you know, consistency? If
- 40:49Speaker 1: this team's going to make.
- 40:49Speaker 2: A run, we need anything.
- 40:53Speaker 1: That's true. Yes.
- 40:54Speaker 2: We need anything over the last 18 games, which is,
- 40:59Speaker 2: you know, all of September and, He's, let me see,
- 41:02Speaker 2: 10 hits, three doubles, three stolen bases. He's the stolen
- 41:08Speaker 2: base king right now as far as success, but he's
- 41:12Speaker 2: been hitting 167 with an on base of 261. Those
- 41:16Speaker 2: are both 100 points off of where they should be.
- 41:18Speaker 2: His slugging is 217. That's not even a real number.
- 41:23Speaker 1: His slugging is 217. Over the last month.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Yeah, over the last month. Let's see.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Over the last month. His slugging for the year is 387.
- 41:29Speaker 2: But for the last month, it's terrible.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Not good.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Yeah. we need so much more from him and he
- 41:40Speaker 2: just goes through it. Like he was, he had a
- 41:44Speaker 2: pretty decent, um, you know, pretty decent August. It wasn't terrible.
- 41:50Speaker 2: And I, what happens is it just disappears and it
- 41:53Speaker 2: goes away and you don't know when it's going to
- 41:55Speaker 2: come back out again. I mean, the good thing is
- 41:57Speaker 2: that he's been in sort of a slump long enough
- 41:59Speaker 2: that it makes sense that he could come out of
- 42:01Speaker 2: it just in time before the Phillies to be in
- 42:05Speaker 2: the playoffs. And I trust I trust that somewhat. Like,
- 42:09Speaker 2: I don't think it's 100 percent guaranteed to happen, but
- 42:13Speaker 2: I do have some faith in him.
- 42:15Speaker 1: I will.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Oh, I just. Bryson Stott's my favorite of the daycare.
- 42:19Speaker 1: All right.
- 42:19Speaker 2: I just I absolutely adore him.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Well, speaking of the daycare, there's another gentleman I want
- 42:24Speaker 1: to get into, and it's Alec Bohm.
- 42:27Speaker 2: And here's the thing. Yeah. Everyone dislikes Alec Boehm, but
- 42:31Speaker 2: I'm going to say he's been the best you could
- 42:33Speaker 2: find lately.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Alec Boehm, just again, looking at September stats, he's hit 339. Incredible.
- 42:42Speaker 2: In the last 18 games.
- 42:43Speaker 1: And we need to keep that going on. He needs
- 42:45Speaker 1: to keep that going on if this team is going
- 42:47Speaker 1: to have any sort of consistency over the course of
- 42:50Speaker 1: the postseason.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Yeah. And he's been, he's been good. building for longer
- 42:56Speaker 2: than that. Let's have a look. I've got his B
- 42:59Speaker 2: ref page up in front of me. Thank you to
- 43:01Speaker 2: the B ref team and Sean Foreman for everything they
- 43:03Speaker 2: do for us every day. Yes. He's been hitting three
- 43:06Speaker 2: 31 over the last two months. It's pretty crazy. 403.
- 43:10Speaker 3: Holy cow.
- 43:11Speaker 2: No one should say a bad word about this man.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 43:14Speaker 2: He is doing everything he can.
- 43:17Speaker 1: He's got to keep it up.
- 43:18Speaker 2: I mean, exactly. He got himself into a hole early
- 43:21Speaker 2: in the season and, And he didn't help himself that
- 43:25Speaker 2: much in May. But since June, he's been steadily building.
- 43:29Speaker 2: And this is the guy that we need right now. Yep.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Because we can't just count on, you know, the big
- 43:35Speaker 2: guys doing what they need. We need some of these
- 43:37Speaker 2: guys that aren't like front and center.
- 43:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 43:40Speaker 2: To do the stuff that he's doing. Like seven, let's see,
- 43:43Speaker 2: over the last two months, 13 doubles, a triple, two
- 43:47Speaker 2: home runs, 29 RBI. Like, he even has a stolen base. Like,
- 43:52Speaker 2: where did that come from?
- 43:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Absolutely. Well, moving along, the last guy I wanted to
- 43:57Speaker 1: mention here with this particular topic in terms of consistency
- 44:03Speaker 1: is none other than Brandon Marsh. He did hit a
- 44:06Speaker 1: home run recently, which was nice. Yeah. That was nice
- 44:10Speaker 1: to see, but we're going to need a little bit
- 44:12Speaker 1: more from him too. I mean, he's certainly not the
- 44:14Speaker 1: Brandon Marsh of May at all, but what are your
- 44:18Speaker 1: thoughts here on Brandon Marsh?
- 44:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Moving right on. Let's just skip him. I'm just sad.
- 44:24Speaker 2: He makes me sad. It's just sad. Like his, it's
- 44:29Speaker 2: really been September. He was all right. He wasn't amazing
- 44:34Speaker 2: in August, but September, whoof. He's hitting 163. Yeah. 163.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Not great. His on-base percentage is the same, 163. Wow.
- 44:47Speaker 2: I mean, his season average is down to 262. It's
- 44:50Speaker 2: just not– I don't know what happened to him, and
- 44:52Speaker 2: he doesn't know what happened to him either. Yeah. And
- 44:54Speaker 2: that makes me sad because we know what his ceiling is.
- 44:57Speaker 2: We know what he can do, and he knows what
- 44:59Speaker 2: he can do. But he just seems as lost as
- 45:01Speaker 2: everyone else as to why he's doing so badly, badly–
- 45:04Speaker 2: more badly than last year.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. This season– I was going to say it's
- 45:09Speaker 1: a tale of two halves this season.
- 45:10Speaker 2: This is a really down period for him at like
- 45:12Speaker 2: the worst time.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. All right. Let's dive into the next
- 45:19Speaker 1: topic here, which is pitching. I want to get your
- 45:21Speaker 1: thoughts here because at the end of the day, it's
- 45:24Speaker 1: the pitching that's really going to put this team in
- 45:26Speaker 1: a good position down the stretch. Certainly has been that
- 45:29Speaker 1: way during the regular season. And that's likely what's going
- 45:33Speaker 1: to be happening during the postseason. Hedging our bets on
- 45:36Speaker 1: the pitching and. the top guys in this starting rotation.
- 45:41Speaker 1: So what is your confidence level, Liz, in terms of
- 45:45Speaker 1: what we're going to see from these guys, you know,
- 45:49Speaker 1: and their absolute, I don't even want to say relevance,
- 45:54Speaker 1: but the need for them to come through game after
- 45:56Speaker 1: game after game here. What's your thought?
- 46:00Speaker 2: I have confidence in the rotation. They've shown themselves to
- 46:03Speaker 2: be human over the past few months. And I think
- 46:06Speaker 2: that's fine. Yeah. Because if they had just continued to cruise,
- 46:12Speaker 2: it would be a little alarming as to what might
- 46:14Speaker 2: happen now. Yeah. But they've, you know, Christopher Sanchez, I
- 46:18Speaker 2: think allowed three runs recently. That's fine. You want it
- 46:21Speaker 2: to be less, but that's still a surmountable, you know,
- 46:24Speaker 2: it's a surmountable obstacle for the offense. Zach Wheeler last
- 46:27Speaker 2: night allowed three. Right.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Three runs.
- 46:30Speaker 2: And that was, again, they were able to not last
- 46:35Speaker 2: night was Sunday night. They allowed three runs and was
- 46:37Speaker 2: able to win. Yeah. And it was great. Yeah. You know,
- 46:41Speaker 2: that's the type of stuff we need from them. That's,
- 46:44Speaker 2: we know that they can do better than that, but
- 46:46Speaker 2: if this is how they do, the Phillies can and
- 46:48Speaker 2: should be able to get past that. And if they can't,
- 46:51Speaker 2: it's not the pitching's fault. Three runs is not too many.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 46:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 46:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Right. Absolutely. And boy, I guess, you know, before I
- 47:02Speaker 1: let you go here, I did want to touch on
- 47:04Speaker 1: the fact that, you know, this, you know, this may
- 47:08Speaker 1: be Don Mattingly's first postseason as a manager. And as
- 47:13Speaker 1: a result, you know, he's got some challenges ahead of
- 47:16Speaker 1: him as he specifically deals with a bullpen situation. that
- 47:19Speaker 1: has just been all over the place and a bullpen
- 47:22Speaker 1: that's been very disappointing. So they're going to be a
- 47:25Speaker 1: tricky aspect of this postseason for Don Mattingly. And I'm
- 47:29Speaker 1: wondering to close us out here, Liz, you know, how
- 47:31Speaker 1: aggressively does he need to manage the pitching as the
- 47:35Speaker 1: bullpen is certainly the weakest aspect of this team?
- 47:38Speaker 2: When you said Don Mattingly hasn't been to the playoffs yet,
- 47:41Speaker 2: I was like, that can't be true. he's been a
- 47:45Speaker 2: manager for 8 million years he's been a manager including
- 47:48Speaker 2: this year for 13 seasons and this is the first
- 47:51Speaker 2: time he's been to the playoffs and I think that
- 47:54Speaker 2: says quite a lot about him as a manager granted
- 47:59Speaker 2: he spent 7 years with the Marlins but they're bad
- 48:04Speaker 2: man they're bad then they're bad now he didn't really
- 48:08Speaker 2: materially improve them that much he needs to be someone
- 48:13Speaker 2: he's Not. Unfortunately, when it comes to bullpen management, he
- 48:18Speaker 2: loves to take guys that did decently one day and
- 48:20Speaker 2: be like, here, slot into this bullpen game today. Oh, wait,
- 48:23Speaker 2: you gave up two runs? Oh, no, I'm sorry, Tim Meza.
- 48:26Speaker 2: He loves to overuse guys in that way, and I
- 48:29Speaker 2: never thought I would long for Rob Thompson's bullpen management
- 48:34Speaker 2: because it did make a bit more sense. It was
- 48:37Speaker 2: overly cautious, but it made more sense than what Mattingly does. Yeah.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Because I don't know what he does and why. Right. I,
