[SPEAKER_04]: I call you every day.
• 0:43
[SPEAKER_04]: That's true We call each other all the time.
• 0:45
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, sometimes I'm just a shoot the breeze.
• 0:47
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, we do talk all the time It's how you do a man, what you have to?
• 0:51
  [SPEAKER_05]: No, nothing.
• 0:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, much right working usually I'm just working.
• 0:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, same We're rather dull really This week on critically acclaimed we've gone we only got a handful of movies Actually less than a handful because he has a handful of be five
• 1:06
[SPEAKER_04]: We have four films and that's not a lot for us just because we were busy.
• 1:12
  [SPEAKER_04]: I was on a town for a bit.
• 1:13
[SPEAKER_04]: It was just kind of difficult to see a couple of movies.
• 1:15
[SPEAKER_01]: We caught up with a relatively uneventful couple of weeks at the multiplex.
• 1:20
  [SPEAKER_01]: Also that, yeah.
• 1:21
[SPEAKER_01]: We recently had an episode on our feed, if you missed it, where Whitney and I reviewed all 15 of the Oscar nominated shorts.
• 1:31
[SPEAKER_01]: this year, which is something we do every year.
• 1:33
[SPEAKER_01]: It's one of our favorite things to do.
• 1:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And that was a lot of in-depth fun, and a lot of those available online, and there's a whole theatrical release for them.
• 1:42
[SPEAKER_01]: If you haven't seen it, you should.
• 1:43
[SPEAKER_01]: It's actually really good crop this year.
• 1:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, before we get into our movie reviews, we had a fun little drop on our network last week.
• 1:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, last week, a couple of days ago, a couple of days ago, which was a teaser for a new project that will eventually find its way on to its own podcast feed, but it was called SnackFast.
• 2:05
[SPEAKER_04]: SnackFam, which is a podcast done by my wife and son.
• 2:15
[SPEAKER_04]: very fond of the notion of limited edition snack foods, if it says limited edition on the package.
• 2:24
[SPEAKER_04]: And usually this is like a market test for a lot of big food companies, like we want to try and see what
• 2:32
[SPEAKER_04]: Salt caramel potato chips taste like will this huckle berry bacon oreo sell now if you love it Maybe we'll keep making that and a either way if you wait long enough You'll find those kinds of things in the 99 cent stores, but
• 2:48
  [SPEAKER_04]: I don't have those anymore.
• 2:51
  [SPEAKER_05]: That's true.
• 2:51
[SPEAKER_04]: Dollar trees are around somewhere.
• 2:54
[SPEAKER_04]: They're not also not common.
• 2:57
[SPEAKER_04]: But my wife and son decided to test those types of foods live on air.
• 3:02
[SPEAKER_04]: They've already recorded in a second episode, which is going to go up before Easter, wherever they find a home.
• 3:08
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, but we gave you a little bit of a sneak peek on our feet.
• 3:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I went that, and we had some good buzz, so I don't know if people liked it.
• 3:16
[SPEAKER_01]: If you want to listen to that, we had to recommend it.
• 3:17
  [SPEAKER_01]: They're really good.
• 3:19
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, they're going to find their own home.
• 3:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And when they do, we will guide you over there.
• 3:23
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll let you know where they are.
• 3:24
  [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly, yeah.
• 3:25
[SPEAKER_01]: And you should check them out and subscribe because that was cute.
• 3:29
[SPEAKER_01]: It was a really, really fun podcast.
• 3:31
[SPEAKER_01]: I hope everybody enjoyed it.
• 3:32
  [SPEAKER_04]: I was excited.
• 3:32
[SPEAKER_04]: My son is very chatty.
• 3:38
[SPEAKER_04]: My wife is also incredibly intelligent and well-spoken, so the two of them have a good rapport.
• 3:44
  [SPEAKER_01]: The other two were.
• 3:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was just about to say that.
• 3:47
[SPEAKER_01]: What are the odds that you're family is a good rapport?
• 3:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I know that some people like to think that when you listen to people, like on a podcast, when you watch them and like a YouTube show where they like talk about, you know, the news movies, music, whatever they do a show about, that that's how they really talk in real life.
• 4:08
[SPEAKER_01]: This is actually how we talk.
• 4:10
[SPEAKER_01]: We might not like pause the conversation and explain like a somewhat obscure cinematic concept to someone who isn't in the room, but other than that, this is exactly how it talk.
• 4:20
[SPEAKER_04]: This is, yeah, these are our conversations.
• 4:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but this week, on critically claimed we're gonna have conversations about scream seven.
• 4:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Ah, that was the scream.
• 4:31
  [SPEAKER_01]: Time seven.
• 4:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we're gonna be reviewing the new Pirate movie, starring Priyanka Chopra and Carl Urban,
• 4:38
  [SPEAKER_01]: the bluff.
• 4:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Sounds like a poker movie.
• 4:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, what they actually said was to blaze.
• 4:47
  [SPEAKER_01]: Well, Prince Leia.
• 4:48
  [SPEAKER_01]: Leia!
• 4:51
  [SPEAKER_01]: Princess bride reference.
• 4:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Rest in peace, Rob Riner.
• 4:54
[SPEAKER_01]: We're also going to be reviewing the new film about a serial killer called Psychocular.
• 5:00
  [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, let's just say.
• 5:02
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll tell you what it is that this is in a few minutes.
• 5:05
[SPEAKER_01]: And then lastly, there is a new sort of medieval folklore story based on the same story that only Baba was based on.
• 5:13
[SPEAKER_01]: That's right, called The Dreddful.
• 5:15
[SPEAKER_01]: And I wanted to see this and I missed it.
• 5:17
  [SPEAKER_04]: Well, sad.
• 5:18
  [SPEAKER_04]: I'm sorry.
• 5:19
  [SPEAKER_04]: I'm sorry.
• 5:19
  [SPEAKER_04]: Because I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:21
  [SPEAKER_04]: I know you love O'Neighbob.
• 5:22
  [SPEAKER_04]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:22
  [SPEAKER_04]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:23
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:24
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:27
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:27
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:28
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:29
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:29
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:31
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:31
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:32
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:34
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:34
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:36
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:36
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: I love O'Neighbob.
• 5:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, screaming, uh, staggering amount of money, surprising because this is screen parts 7.
• 5:43
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the last one made more money than any other screen movie, so that these are still going, people like Scream.
• 5:50
[SPEAKER_04]: And I understand it because people like scream, but people don't like new scream.
• 5:59
[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, a lot of people do like new scream.
• 6:00
[SPEAKER_04]: The original scream, maybe some of those earlier sequels back in the 90's.
• 6:04
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I think people like new scream.
• 6:05
[SPEAKER_01]: I think you're not giving them quite an effect.
• 6:08
  [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, I don't like new scream.
• 6:09
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's fair.
• 6:10
[SPEAKER_01]: That like new scream, just fine.
• 6:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Scream, you shouldn't know what scream is, but just real, real fast.
• 6:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Scream is a series of slasher films, the first forward directed by Wes Craven, then he died, and then the franchise was taken over by directing duo known as Radio Silence, although they've since dropped that moniker, they also directed Abigail and ready or not.
• 6:31
  [SPEAKER_01]: And they're these
• 6:37
[SPEAKER_01]: But the novelty of them, and I think the reason why, after the original classic screen, which I still think is one of the best movies of the 1990s, one of the best horror movies ever made.
• 6:46
[SPEAKER_04]: One of the most 1990s movies, I think the fin of the, yeah, kind of defines the decade.
• 6:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think if you were teaching a class on 90s cinema and screen wasn't in there, I would question your entire syllabus.
• 6:56
[SPEAKER_01]: It just needs to be, it's a lightning rod.
• 7:00
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like everything from here on was like super charged with irony.
• 7:07
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think the reason why Scream wasn't just like a popular horror movie, he will really got into it, is that Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first two and co-wrote several of the others, Aaron Kruger was brought on for three and four, and I think radio silence worked on.
• 7:25
[SPEAKER_04]: Didn't Kevin Williamson also come back for four?
• 7:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Is Aaron Kruger also came back for four?
• 7:30
[SPEAKER_01]: I think Kevin Williamson, some of it and Aaron Kruger did others.
• 7:36
[SPEAKER_01]: What Kevin Williamson did with the original scream and this is what I think made scream not just a good horror movie but a phenomenon.
• 7:43
[SPEAKER_01]: It had really great characters like across the board, memorable distinct characters who taught relatively like young people did at the time, which at the time was a huge novelty.
• 7:57
[SPEAKER_04]: It certainly had good casting, they cast
• 8:02
[SPEAKER_04]: Actors like a Jamie Kennedy and That one that was a good thing Matthew Lillard like these are never cam Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, and that Nive Campbell was sort of like the teen idol She was the star of the show and you know Ros McAllen who's kind of right on the rise Drew Barron was a big draw Of course, she's the legendarily.
• 8:20
[SPEAKER_01]: She was the who's like the biggest face on the poster and then first kill.
• 8:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, very novel But they
• 8:27
[SPEAKER_04]: The selling point was that it knew it was coming really late in the slasher game.
• 8:37
[SPEAKER_04]: The slasherers were still like coughing up their last breaths in the mid-90s.
• 8:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there was a little bit of a pain, but they weren't very popular anymore.
• 8:45
[SPEAKER_01]: They were the guaranteed money maker, the way they were.
• 8:47
[SPEAKER_04]: A lot of the, the two most popular slasher film series that was in Nightmare and Elm Street and there was Freddy the Thirteen.
• 8:53
[SPEAKER_04]: about both well hang on but both drew to a close in the early 90s because there was Freddy's dead the final nightmare and there was Jason goes to hell yeah and those weren't
• 9:04
[SPEAKER_04]: Supposedly supposed to be the last ones.
• 9:06
  [SPEAKER_04]: They're done.
• 9:07
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, Halloween kept on going for a little bit.
• 9:10
[SPEAKER_04]: 95 saw that really awful and telling the curse of Michael Myers the sixth one was really bad and Hellraiser was even kind of sputtering out.
• 9:18
[SPEAKER_04]: That was the one where Hellraiser went to space.
• 9:20
[SPEAKER_04]: That one came at 96 I like that movie.
• 9:22
  [SPEAKER_00]: I like Hellraiser.
• 9:22
  [SPEAKER_04]: It's underrated.
• 9:23
[SPEAKER_04]: I like how razor-blood line a lot, but it's a far cry from the original.
• 9:27
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
• 9:46
[SPEAKER_04]: the fourth one like tried to clean up all of like the new shit that the third movie introduced like and now he's a slasher well here's the reason why he was a slasher and how that fits into like the better mythology that you already knew like what the ad Adam Scott and they figured it out
• 10:01
[SPEAKER_04]: Jacques, I got some that fantastic box set that has the first four hallraisers in it and has the the producers cut of hallraisers for.
• 10:12
[SPEAKER_04]: It was directed by Alan Smithy.
• 10:14
[SPEAKER_04]: It was actually Kevin Yager, the special effects guy.
• 10:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you probably know about that.
• 10:18
[SPEAKER_01]: He worked on the visual effects for like the child's play movies that was like the band.
• 10:22
[SPEAKER_04]: And the monsters is in and that movie is really cool.
• 10:24
[SPEAKER_04]: But he hated the way it was cut and it was like super short.
• 10:26
[SPEAKER_04]: Is that what he wanted?
• 10:27
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 10:27
[SPEAKER_04]: There's a really great scene where the Adam Scott character defies a demon.
• 10:33
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like this Ageless French aristocrat, and she casts a spell on him, and he like ages instantly and melts into a puddle, but that scene was cut.
• 10:42
[SPEAKER_04]: But it was restored for this box set.
• 10:44
[SPEAKER_04]: And there's a really great set where she snaps her finger as points her finger at him.
• 10:48
[SPEAKER_04]: And he starts to like, melt and shrivel.
• 10:50
[SPEAKER_04]: And then it's just cuts, cuts to like a silent movie in her title that just says, Jock's shocking death.
• 10:57
  [SPEAKER_05]: It's fantastic.
• 10:58
  [SPEAKER_04]: Nice.
• 10:58
[SPEAKER_04]: To scream, because Slashers were so long in the tooth West Craven,
• 11:05
[SPEAKER_04]: Do great at Nightmare in Elm Street came back around and made this film that was about Characters who grew up watching Sasha's.
• 11:12
[SPEAKER_04]: It was like breathless These were characters who were influenced by movies and talked about slasher movies and they recognized when they were in a slasher movie type situation It isn't this kind of like because this is what happened.
• 11:25
[SPEAKER_01]: I think to culture not popular culture.
• 11:27
  [SPEAKER_01]: This culture is that
• 11:29
[SPEAKER_01]: with, especially with like home video becoming extremely prolific and with cable TV offering more options or entertainment, a lot of people in our generation were exposed to more media on a regular basis on a daily basis.
• 11:45
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, then ever before.
• 11:46
[SPEAKER_01]: And now of course that's only got an exponentially greater, but at the time it seemed weird that here was an entire generation
• 11:58
  [SPEAKER_01]: was movies and TV.
• 12:00
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 12:01
[SPEAKER_01]: I forget who said it, but someone was like, you know, Mark Scorsese made mean streets about, for people who like grew up like on the mean streets and then Quentin Tarantino made a picture for people who grew up watching mean streets.
• 12:15
  [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
• 12:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Which is a very different type of demo.
• 12:17
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think it understood, even though like the dialogue is obviously very stylized, but I think it understood that generation better than a lot of other films had.
• 12:26
  [SPEAKER_01]: at that time.
• 12:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And then on top of it all, it not only understood those young characters, and again, teen characters weren't always treated well in cinema.
• 12:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, it gave them intelligence humor agency.
• 12:38
[SPEAKER_01]: They got to screw up, but in a believable way, it was actually a good, if the killings had never happened, this would be a good cast for a team drama.
• 12:47
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and even though they spoke in that, like, two clever by halfway, it wasn't quite into Josh Weedon territory, not quite, where they were like unrealistically witty.
• 12:51
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 12:51
[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh uh, uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh
• 12:57
[SPEAKER_04]: No, they were just funny characters, and when they found themselves in the slasher movie situation, they were a little bit taken aback that this was happening in real life because they knew this is the way it works in movies.
• 13:09
[SPEAKER_01]: And indeed, the colors themselves were inspired by the movie so they were engineering it that way.
• 13:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, when the sequels started to come along, the screen two came out one year later, rushed into production.
• 13:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Less than a year later.
• 13:20
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 13:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And honestly, for a movie that was rushed into production, pretty damn good.
• 13:26
[SPEAKER_04]: It's okay, I feel like the comment had been made.
• 13:30
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 13:31
[SPEAKER_04]: The point wasn't to make a sequel to Scream, but Scream made a gazillion dollars.
• 13:36
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's a commenting on the slasher genre.
• 13:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the genre's built on sequels.
• 13:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it was an organic idea.
• 13:41
[SPEAKER_04]: They kind of like commented on the penalty of sequels in the sequels.
• 13:45
[SPEAKER_01]: So that, it kind of fit.
• 13:46
[SPEAKER_01]: The recurring phrase in that movie was sequel suck.
• 13:49
[SPEAKER_01]: But regardless of all of the meta stuff,
• 13:53
[SPEAKER_01]: What I think carried through, and I don't want to do, I don't feel like we need to do a B-by-B of every screen movie, but what carried through for the first four screen movies in particular into a lesser extent five.
• 14:05
[SPEAKER_01]: was the surviving characters started to develop an almost soap operatic quality.
• 14:11
[SPEAKER_01]: These two characters will they or won't they stay together, do we in Gale played by Courtney Cox?
• 14:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, David R. K. Well, they were married and realized.
• 14:19
[SPEAKER_01]: They were married not for the only weren't married in real life.
• 14:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And so that was a whole drama behind the scenes.
• 14:24
[SPEAKER_01]: But and then there was Sidney Prescott who has gone through,
• 14:27
[SPEAKER_01]: At the beginning of the first movie she got through something traumatic, her mother had been brutally murdered.
• 14:31
[SPEAKER_01]: And then in the second movie, all her friends are brutally murdered, and it turns out that the killer brutally murdered her mom.
• 14:39
[SPEAKER_01]: So all of it was tied together.
• 14:40
[SPEAKER_01]: And then in the second one, it happened again.
• 14:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Someone else's obsessed with her and she became this weird focal point for true crime enthusiasts in the stab universe, or the spring universe.
• 14:52
[SPEAKER_01]: And the stab is the name of the fictional screen movie within the screen franchise.
• 14:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but yeah, she started to be too understand, like the perils of becoming a celebrity for something that is not even you didn't want.
• 15:04
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and so it was frustrating that by the time we made, we got to the third movie that she wasn't the killer.
• 15:12
[SPEAKER_04]: That was the logical thing, like she has just been surrounded by so much deaths, she would eventually just snap and become the murder herself.
• 15:20
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I don't think that would have been satisfying what given the way Nive Campbell was playing her, I think.
• 15:25
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that idea that the person who has gone through all this horror would be affected by it and possibly turn to for like who better wear the dark side.
• 15:35
[SPEAKER_01]: was carried over after screen three and then at the legacy sequel for into screen five and six when Melissa Barara a character who along with General Ortega, there are these two young sisters, they get pulled into a new screen Murder Mystery and it turns out that Melissa Barara's character is the daughter of Billy Lumus who is the murderer at one of the murders in the original movies That's right and that could have been enough.
• 16:00
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's like, oh, I've
• 16:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: father was a murderer.
• 16:02
[SPEAKER_01]: I have to deal with that.
• 16:03
[SPEAKER_01]: But she would see like visions of her dad who would in a very special effects too.
• 16:09
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 16:09
[SPEAKER_04]: Skit Ulrich that character came back.
• 16:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And but he would like give her advice on like how to survive.
• 16:15
[SPEAKER_01]: But like here's what a serial killer would do in this situation.
• 16:17
[SPEAKER_01]: And it feels very clear to me that what they were leading up to is the distinct possibility that Melissa Barara would become
• 16:24
[SPEAKER_01]: a serial killer by screen.
• 16:27
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess we've been screaming seven at this point.
• 16:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Screen it certainly, but like that was the natural organic conclusion of this so screen five started land pointing the idea legacy sequels screen six ultimately didn't lampoon much Or wise.
• 16:40
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just gonna ran out of ideas
• 16:42
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't think five did that or did so or and three to a limited degree the soap opera dynamics that you're saying are carrying through took over the series and made it less interested I recently rewatched three I think people I think people sleep on three I think three at the time was considered the worst one and maybe at the time it was.
• 16:59
[SPEAKER_04]: But I've been getting steadily worse since then.
• 17:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't necessarily agree with that.
• 17:03
[SPEAKER_01]: But regardless, I think calling people really, really, really mocking screen three is being terrible.
• 17:09
[SPEAKER_01]: I think is a holdover from before there were other screen movies to compare it to afterwards.
• 17:15
[SPEAKER_01]: So they just got worse.
• 17:16
  [SPEAKER_01]: I know.
• 17:16
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't agree with that.
• 17:17
[SPEAKER_01]: When you stop putting words in my mouth.
• 17:19
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm saying that it felt like this odd one out.
• 17:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Whereas I think if you actually look back on it now and here's a movie that takes place while they were making this movie within a movie, the stabbed three.
• 17:30
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay.
• 17:32
[SPEAKER_01]: As a satire of Hollywood and the way that Hollywood was, you were tragic.
• 17:36
  [SPEAKER_01]: Exploits tragedy.
• 17:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
• 17:38
[SPEAKER_01]: And also, there was a very distinct line in the original screen that a lot of people really love.
• 17:44
  [SPEAKER_01]: Was that movies, it's a quote, it's not a, it's an able, it's a term.
• 17:47
[SPEAKER_01]: But movies don't create psychos, movie makes psychos more creative.
• 17:53
[SPEAKER_01]: But that kind of feels like it lets movies off the hook.
• 17:55
[SPEAKER_01]: What I feel like screen three does by actually pointing the finger at a misogynistic studio system that protects wrong doers.
• 18:06
[SPEAKER_01]: It actually says movies might not create.
• 18:09
  [SPEAKER_01]: you know, bad people.
• 18:11
[SPEAKER_01]: But they're made by people with that agenda and that does spill over and matter.
• 18:17
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think screen series actually very pointed in that regard.
• 18:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Screen 4, I think the who done it quality is kind of, but ultimately what they're talking about is the way that a new generation doesn't appreciate the sacrifices made of an old generation.
• 18:30
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that's more about feminism that it is about horror.
• 18:32
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 18:32
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think five was more about what was happening with Halloween and also Star Wars at the time.
• 18:38
[SPEAKER_01]: The idea that in order to bring this thing back, you have to go back to the hits, you have to introduce a new generation, but you have to really revere the old guard.
• 18:47
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think by the time we hit screen seven, I think that's weirdly appropriate.
• 18:53
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's riffing on Star Wars more than horror, which weird.
• 18:57
[SPEAKER_01]: But screen seven is Rise of Skywalker.
• 19:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Scream seven is we we start going to the direction with new characters.
• 19:05
[SPEAKER_01]: We have backtracked Really hard really fast and not only are we going back to the basics and doing all of the old hits with like Bring-in-back characters.
• 19:15
[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't think we bring back and making sure that all of the emphasis is on the past The legacy of the movies that the original filmmakers made not the new ones.
• 19:25
[SPEAKER_01]: They're also openly mocking the last movie and like saying that like Yeah, it's fucked up that Sydney Prescott wasn't in that one
• 19:31
[SPEAKER_01]: You should have been in that one.
• 19:32
[SPEAKER_01]: It's literally all about you, Neve Campbell.
• 19:34
[SPEAKER_01]: It's only said people actually say a lot in this movie.
• 19:39
[SPEAKER_04]: Screen 6 was the one that really got under my skin because you think back to the original scream.
• 19:44
  [SPEAKER_04]: It's like a satire.
• 19:45
[SPEAKER_04]: These are supposed to be comments on the way horrors over.
• 19:48
[SPEAKER_04]: They're trying to tear something down and let something new be born and these sequels are proving that they're not letting it happen.
• 19:54
[SPEAKER_01]: They're not commenting on the fact that people aren't letting that happen to any franchise.
• 19:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Which makes it so it makes it fitting for us.
• 20:00
[SPEAKER_04]: So I suppose you could see the the The badness and banality of the sequels as some kind of commentary as to the badness of banality of sequels But they're still not good to watch.
• 20:12
  [SPEAKER_01]: I still have two version 5 and 6.
• 20:14
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm harsh on Three four five and six I think you're way too harsh on all of this.
• 20:19
[SPEAKER_01]: I think those are all to a degree different dreams I think those I don't think and I'm going to even include seven on this because even though I think it is the worst one
• 20:28
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're all engaging, I think they all have something in them that's memorable, but I actually think as far as a horror movie franchise go, it's remarkably consistent, allowing for course that the first one is the best thing I've been quality afterwards.
• 20:42
[SPEAKER_04]: I think that the first four are scary and intelligent, very degrees.
• 20:47
[SPEAKER_04]: I do like the character work.
• 20:49
[SPEAKER_04]: I think for because it introduced a new generation of characters, but also kept the old one.
• 20:54
[SPEAKER_01]: was way too over stuffed and I wasn't going to assure what story we were supposed to be following was frustrating about foreign what I think helped for back was that it introduced all these new characters but because it's still maintaining that the old characters were the focus we didn't get to know any of them that we may be Hayden Panette air and she was only like the sixth lead yeah so
• 21:13
[SPEAKER_01]: all of those characters who we should be kind of glombing onto as a new generation feel like cannon fodder and I feel like that started to finally get fixed with five and six because I think most of brown genartaga are very engaging actors and I think they had interesting characters and I think the twins played by Mason Gooding and
• 21:35
[SPEAKER_01]: someone with three names, I forgot her name.
• 21:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I forgot, she plays Mindy.
• 21:40
[SPEAKER_01]: They're Randy's niece and nephew from the original series, so you can be kind of these characters, and you have your, I think they're really fun characters.
• 21:47
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 21:49
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think they both, I think they're amusing to watch.
• 21:52
[SPEAKER_01]: I like following their stories, and I was enjoying them being the news through line.
• 21:59
[SPEAKER_01]: And I also enjoyed that in five,
• 22:02
[SPEAKER_01]: They actually killed one of the core characters who seemed really safe in three and four.
• 22:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Like in three and four, the core three, they're fine.
• 22:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Literally untouchable, nothing bad will ever happen to them at least not permanently.
• 22:17
[SPEAKER_01]: And if I, it's like, no, it's about the new characters.
• 22:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, you know, one of them got on solo.
• 22:24
[SPEAKER_04]: And much like Rise of Skywalker, we found a way to come back to that and just sort of been like, I think the filmmakers made a grievous error however in focusing on the characters because that's not what brought us to screen.
• 22:37
[SPEAKER_04]: Those characters were all disposable in that first movie.
• 22:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Any one of them, I wouldn't really just argue to other ones.
• 22:42
[SPEAKER_04]: I know and I disagree 100% I feel like they turned into a soap opera after a while they're they're trying to get me to care about these characters who
• 22:52
[SPEAKER_04]: you know that are slasher legacy characters jasmine so boy brown was the name of the there he was forgetting yeah she plays maybe wouldn't have been able to call she's great um so yeah wasn't wasn't fun to five or six at all um four I thought was really busy and now we're up to part seven which really you could have deleted uh scream two through six like just removed them from reality
• 23:16
[SPEAKER_04]: and skipped straight to this one.
• 23:18
[SPEAKER_04]: This one could have been scream to with a few minor adjustments.
• 23:22
[SPEAKER_04]: And it would have been a fine follow-up.
• 23:25
[SPEAKER_04]: Like a late stage, simple.
• 23:27
  [SPEAKER_04]: We didn't.
• 23:28
[SPEAKER_04]: All of the things would have been okay.
• 23:29
[SPEAKER_04]: Like there could have been some exposition to explain the events of two through six.
• 23:35
[SPEAKER_04]: uh... and of course you got a change of the third act because well just change the third act anyway because it sucks it's a really bad third act is the worst third act of any screen of the year and and the third act of the year was was not great the uh... the screen movies have all been who done it uh... they're all uh... there's the killers have all had been different in every movie and they're all wearing the same all off the rack Halloween uh... fun i think it's called fun zone uh...
• 23:59
[SPEAKER_04]: Go's face mask, which was available in Halloween stores before the movie was made.
• 24:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's inspired by the painting the screen as such.
• 24:07
[SPEAKER_04]: It was in public domain until they were able to... No, it was not in public domain, they licensed it.
• 24:11
[SPEAKER_01]: They licensed the screen from the estate of the painter who made the screen.
• 24:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Edvard Monk.
• 24:16
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm talking about the mask, not the movie.
• 24:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
• 24:19
[SPEAKER_01]: The mask was just we made a mask.
• 24:22
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 24:22
[SPEAKER_01]: The mask was not originally licensed for anything.
• 24:25
[SPEAKER_01]: It was just the mobile and story.
• 24:26
  [SPEAKER_01]: That was my point.
• 24:27
  [SPEAKER_04]: But that's what I said.
• 24:28
[SPEAKER_01]: And then you just said they licensed it.
• 24:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like scream, scream, license set from the costume company.
• 24:33
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was talking about the costume company.
• 24:34
[SPEAKER_01]: So that was where I disconnect.
• 24:36
  [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
• 24:36
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 24:37
  [SPEAKER_04]: No.
• 24:37
[SPEAKER_04]: The filmmakers license this mask and used it as their sort of central mask in the movie.
• 24:42
[SPEAKER_04]: And all the killers wear the same mask, they hold the same kind of knife.
• 24:48
[SPEAKER_04]: They wear the same kind of boots, and they wear the sort of like death-like trout.
• 24:53
[SPEAKER_04]: And the reveal at the end of every single screen movie has typically been who it was.
• 25:00
[SPEAKER_01]: The killer killers are unmasked and they reveal what their motive was.
• 25:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Usually it's someone who was connected to Sydney Prescott, whoever the protagonists were.
• 25:12
[SPEAKER_04]: Now, a lot of the screen movies at a specially-screen 7 were seem to have been written in such a way where they hadn't figured out who the killer was going to be while they were making it.
• 25:24
[SPEAKER_04]: Like they maybe had alternate endings, and that was actually true for a lot of the screen and secrets.
• 25:28
[SPEAKER_04]: They were really highly protected during production.
• 25:31
[SPEAKER_04]: and they wrote like fake endings to make sure scripts weren't getting leaked.
• 25:35
[SPEAKER_01]: I remember I read a leaked script of Scream 2 actually and the fake ending of Scream 2 had three different killers who were not like it was it was Sidney's
• 25:49
[SPEAKER_01]: boyfriend and her best friend who were going for a Mickey and Mallory Knox Natural Born Killer's thing.
• 25:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And then she is saved at the end by Cottonweary, who she originally accidentally said killed her mother even though she was wrong about it.
• 26:05
[SPEAKER_04]: We have Shriver playing that character.
• 26:06
[SPEAKER_01]: But after he killed them, he realized
• 26:09
[SPEAKER_01]: I can kill you right now and just say they did it.
• 26:12
  [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
• 26:12
[SPEAKER_01]: So he decides to become another killer right at the end.
• 26:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
• 26:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Which actually was a fun ending.
• 26:17
[SPEAKER_01]: It was pretty neat and that was totally fake.
• 26:21
[SPEAKER_01]: That was one of the, I really didn't shoot it.
• 26:23
[SPEAKER_01]: They wrote it so that if it leaked, they would know, like, that's the version that got out.
• 26:28
[SPEAKER_04]: There, there were wheels have large, except for the first one, which was really kind of a shocker.
• 26:34
  [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, big shock.
• 26:35
[SPEAKER_04]: I have largely been a little bit underwhelming.
• 26:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Underwhelming because lately a little predictable yeah, I find from four onward I find it's pretty clear.
• 26:44
[SPEAKER_04]: I'll say this about scream seven not predictable because they don't set up anything We were we've caught up with the Nef Campbell character Sidney who is now a remarried She's married to Joel McHale.
• 26:58
  [SPEAKER_04]: She's not remarried.
• 26:59
[SPEAKER_04]: She was married for the first time.
• 27:00
[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, married to Joel McHale He has a teenage daughter that she's named after their rose McAllen character from the first movie
• 27:06
[SPEAKER_04]: And as we've seen her sort of very sleigh throughout these movies, she's written a book about overcoming trauma.
• 27:13
[SPEAKER_04]: She's been the subject of a lot of speculative true crime fiction, the old Corby franchise based on her life.
• 27:19
[SPEAKER_04]: The Courtney Cox characters always trying to get her in front of a camera for an interview.
• 27:23
[SPEAKER_04]: And she's become sort of the center of this like miniature media firestorm.
• 27:26
[SPEAKER_04]: So she knows how to deal with, like, print colors, and claim to be a killer.
• 27:30
  [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
• 27:30
[SPEAKER_01]: She has decided to put all of that aside as much as humanly possible, raise her kid, she owns a coffee shop now, and she doesn't even talk about that part of her life with her teenage daughter, which is starting to become a point of contention.
• 27:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Why don't you tell me about what happened to you, everyone else knows?
• 27:47
[SPEAKER_04]: They should have named the teenage daughter Sydney Junior.
• 27:51
[SPEAKER_04]: or just another Sydney or Sydney fan girl number eight just because the only thing that this character seems to be interested in is her mom.
• 28:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Well theoretically this should be like our new character.
• 28:05
[SPEAKER_01]: This should be our way into the story right is the young character who doesn't really know her mom very well.
• 28:10
  [SPEAKER_01]: There is
• 28:11
[SPEAKER_01]: The center of their conflict is that Sydney thinks she's protecting her daughter by not talking about what she's been through and her daughter is like, no, I just don't know my mom and I'm reaching this rebellious teenage phase where this is, you know, becoming, you know,
• 28:39
[SPEAKER_01]: and her professor or teacher, I guess, because it's high school.
• 28:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Her teacher says, you're sitting at Prescott's Daughter.
• 28:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Why can't you be more like her?
• 28:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Where's that fire and the other hand?
• 28:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Which is a fucked up thing to say to a kid, but it obviously rancals her.
• 28:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was thinking to myself, okay, so this is a statement of theme, right?
• 28:58
[SPEAKER_01]: This is establishing what the character is going through.
• 29:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone wants me to be like my mother, so I kind of figured,
• 29:06
[SPEAKER_01]: her story arc, we have something to do with forging her own path, proving her own identity.
• 29:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Join her mom that no, I'm not you, I'm not going to make the same mistakes you made.
• 29:15
[SPEAKER_01]: It turns out the whole movie her arc is, she should be more like Sydney.
• 29:21
[SPEAKER_01]: She needs to learn to be brave and violent just like her mom.
• 29:26
[SPEAKER_01]: Every single thing her mom was, Tatum needs to be.
• 29:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Anyone who is not like Sydney is a disappointment in this movie.
• 29:35
[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, when they, and this is one of the things that these sort of this echoing commentary on five and six, which was none of the people were sitting.
• 29:43
[SPEAKER_01]: So who gives a fuck about their useless fucks?
• 29:47
[SPEAKER_01]: which considering the situation which my last rare was fired into our take of left in solidarity, that seems not only disrespectful to the last couple of movies and their cast, but also fucking mean honestly and it would to your own franchise in a way that is I think unnecessarily harsh and I for me as someone who actually liked those two movies to varying degrees and think five is better than six, it was kind of like
• 30:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Fuck you, I like those.
• 30:15
[SPEAKER_00]: I least like the characters.
• 30:17
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't understand what you, I love Sydney Prescott.
• 30:20
  [SPEAKER_01]: I think she's a great character.
• 30:21
[SPEAKER_01]: I think she's one of the greatest protagonists and franchise movie history.
• 30:25
[SPEAKER_01]: She's not the only interesting character that could possibly be in a screen movie.
• 30:29
  [SPEAKER_04]: I could make space.
• 30:31
  [SPEAKER_04]: I suppose not.
• 30:32
[SPEAKER_04]: And I think maybe a big sort of misstep with the whole screen series is zeroing in on Sydney as the main character.
• 30:41
[SPEAKER_04]: Sort of as the center of the entire thing.
• 30:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Because that's one of the movies that's really starting to stretch it.
• 30:48
[SPEAKER_04]: It's starting to stretch it how many times can you know who would have thought the same thing could happen to the guy twice every screen movie is die hard to yeah more or less and Not only is does it keep happening to her and not having a mounting effect on her life She's just you know that that might do resilient for that But if we're focusing on the character we've lost the capacity for satire
• 31:13
[SPEAKER_04]: There's nothing that can be said anymore about the state of modern horror.
• 31:18
[SPEAKER_04]: It would have been nice if they're going to go back to the screen franchise if they turn it into something other than a slasher movie.
• 31:25
[SPEAKER_04]: Because the first one came when slasher's were already dead.
• 31:28
  [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
• 31:29
[SPEAKER_04]: And it tried to kill it.
• 31:30
[SPEAKER_04]: And the only thing that came out of screen were like imitation slasher's that were also self-aware.
• 31:34
[SPEAKER_04]: And we're trying to kill the slasher's on her dad.
• 31:39
[SPEAKER_04]: Now it's just that thing.
• 31:40
[SPEAKER_04]: It's the thing that it hated, it turned into the opposite of what it was supposed to be.
• 31:44
[SPEAKER_04]: And I think, and if they had maybe taken the franchise in a way where it could comment on modern trends in horror.
• 31:53
[SPEAKER_04]: If they actually did bother to reboot
• 31:58
[SPEAKER_04]: I'd had a new actress playing a city presscott or maybe you get some characters genuinely funny from the scary movie franchise and sort of start climbing them in them in there and they start to be together if you do a Haunting conjuring type version of a screen see to make fun of the haunting trends I think some people find the idea of rebooting scream just tasteful because they think of those characters is very real Which is why my theory and this is how you do it you reboot scream But you call it stab
• 32:28
[SPEAKER_01]: There you go, makes that regret.
• 32:29
[SPEAKER_01]: We've rebooted the Stad the movie.
• 32:31
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's just enough of a separation that you can say, Sidney Prescott, still the real Sidney Prescott, but they're all new.
• 32:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: But they're all new.
• 32:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: But new actors.
• 32:39
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a slightly different thing.
• 32:40
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think you can get away with that.
• 32:41
  [SPEAKER_01]: I think we've fun.
• 32:42
  [SPEAKER_01]: I think we'd be very freeing.
• 32:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Because in the Stad movies, I think the fourth one had time travel.
• 32:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Like they got really, really weird.
• 32:49
[SPEAKER_01]: I remember when screens three came out and Randy had like a videotape that he made from before he died.
• 32:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, just in case there's a third one, I need to establish the rules, because trilogy has different rules than a sequel.
• 33:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the things he said was, the killer will now be superhuman.
• 33:07
[SPEAKER_01]: And the way they did that in screen three was, the killer was wearing a bullet professed.
• 33:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, fine, then totally fine.
• 33:13
[SPEAKER_01]: You still want to keep it real, but you want to make it so out.
• 33:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: We keep shooting it.
• 33:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's a blow-prevast.
• 33:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I thought it would be really fucking cool if they actually with super natural.
• 33:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Like a fuck that Jason did.
• 33:23
[SPEAKER_01]: It took five movies until he did what's six techniques it on the six movie, but like
• 33:30
  [SPEAKER_01]: Why not?
• 33:31
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't give a shit like let's go nuts because I feel like scream is it's so committed It's open to the characters and so committed to feeling like there's an element of plausibility to it that it limits what they can comment on yeah, and I think that's a problem and I think
• 33:47
[SPEAKER_01]: The last couple of movies have struggled if anything else.
• 33:50
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they've struggled to figure out what they're commenting on.
• 33:53
[SPEAKER_01]: What do we have to say?
• 33:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Screen two was talking about sequels.
• 33:56
  [SPEAKER_01]: Fine.
• 33:57
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot to riff on on a sequel.
• 33:58
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 33:58
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's okay.
• 33:59
  [SPEAKER_01]: Screen three.
• 33:59
  [SPEAKER_01]: Do it once.
• 34:00
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's fine.
• 34:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 34:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: Screen three.
• 34:02
[SPEAKER_01]: We were doing the making of screen while we were making a screen movie.
• 34:06
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's something fun.
• 34:07
[SPEAKER_01]: You can play with that.
• 34:08
  [SPEAKER_01]: Screen four.
• 34:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Didn't really know what was going on in horror at the time.
• 34:12
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a pretty good movie, but it's not really commenting on anything because that was that was years later It was like over a decade.
• 34:18
[SPEAKER_04]: No, it wasn't I guess it was like 2011.
• 34:20
[SPEAKER_01]: It was about a decade Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, um and then screen five was talking about sort of the recoil trend where we're going to do It's technically a sequel, but we're just doing the old one over again and bringing back the original cast had a little bit of fun with that
• 34:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Six didn't know what the fuck what it was about like it didn't have anything specific.
• 34:40
[SPEAKER_04]: There's there's a scene in six Yeah, where the characters wander into this like museum space Where all the artifacts and masks and costumes that were used in the first movie are under glass It's like screen was trying to kill slasher's and now we're preserving now.
• 34:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I feel like it You could have gotten on that.
• 35:00
[SPEAKER_04]: I suppose so, but it I feel like
• 35:02
[SPEAKER_04]: Because screen was such a hit and because people became so fond of it, it started to be held in too high estimation within its own universe.
• 35:10
[SPEAKER_04]: All of the stuff that they were commenting on were important in the universe because now they're important to us.
• 35:15
[SPEAKER_04]: When really we should have been burning everything down.
• 35:17
  [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
• 35:17
[SPEAKER_04]: The tagline for screen seven is burn it all down.
• 35:21
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 35:21
[SPEAKER_04]: And I wish they had.
• 35:22
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I wish it was just a go for broke kill all the characters.
• 35:26
[SPEAKER_04]: I said they're talking about bringing it all back There's it's like F1 like yeah Yeah, Scott is now the sort of pureless untouchable character was right about everything Everyone needs to be more like her.
• 35:39
[SPEAKER_04]: They say and dialogue that people need to be more like her yeah, and while I like
• 35:45
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I like that Sidney Prescott better than I like Sonny from F1.
• 35:48
  [SPEAKER_04]: Well, she's a real character.
• 35:50
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, she's actually like more of a human character.
• 35:52
[SPEAKER_04]: You know she's a human character because she's married, Joel McHale, who's playing the world's most decent human being.
• 35:58
  [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
• 35:58
[SPEAKER_04]: I feel like in real life, Joel McHale is like the world's most decent human being.
• 36:02
  [SPEAKER_04]: Is he okay?
• 36:03
[SPEAKER_04]: I think he has resting smug face and he's had to work over time to prove that he's actually... No, I think he's actually...
• 36:08
[SPEAKER_01]: I like it for really quite decent.
• 36:10
[SPEAKER_01]: But I feel like what we're doing here.
• 36:12
  [SPEAKER_01]: This one had...
• 36:13
[SPEAKER_01]: It's called Burn It All Down, and I think you're right.
• 36:16
[SPEAKER_01]: It should have been a better way to deal with it.
• 36:18
[SPEAKER_01]: But what it does have, it does touch on something that is an interesting thing.
• 36:22
[SPEAKER_01]: That is absolutely fair game in horror and popular culture in general, that you could have rift on endlessly and gotten a lot of creativity out of.
• 36:31
  [SPEAKER_01]: And that is this.
• 36:32
[SPEAKER_01]: At the beginning of the movie, this is one of the very first lines of dialogue.
• 36:34
[SPEAKER_01]: You hear the two characters listening to like a true crime podcast.
• 36:38
[SPEAKER_01]: And they're talking about the original screen murders.
• 36:42
  [SPEAKER_01]: Which the movie's 30 years old.
• 36:45
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to doesn't say who the killers were.
• 36:46
[SPEAKER_01]: I already mentioned Billy Limus and Stu Mocker played by Matthew Lillard There is a weird little Easter egg in screen 2.
• 36:56
[SPEAKER_01]: There was a party scene, and if you look carefully, you can see Matthew Lillard in the background Clearly jump screen 2 in screen 2.
• 37:03
  [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, this is real.
• 37:03
  [SPEAKER_01]: This is 100% real.
• 37:04
  [SPEAKER_01]: He was there
• 37:06
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's a joke.
• 37:06
[SPEAKER_01]: It's an Easter egg, but some people thought maybe stew has twin brother or maybe stew For some how yeah, so when they're listening to this podcast and the very first scene of the movie They're saying some people say stew never died and so it's like, okay, so what are we talking about here?
• 37:23
  [SPEAKER_01]: fan theories.
• 37:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Fan theories and fan fiction.
• 37:27
[SPEAKER_01]: So that is actually a rich vein.
• 37:31
[SPEAKER_01]: You can combine for a screen movie where it's like, yeah, we're not riffing on stab.
• 37:36
[SPEAKER_01]: We're riffing on the fan theories of what stab should have been of what we wanted to happen in stab.
• 37:42
[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll rewriting the script and we're adding our new characters and also YouTube got to make out.
• 37:47
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's the rules, man.
• 37:48
[SPEAKER_01]: You never made out before you got to make out now.
• 37:50
  [SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, Sid.
• 37:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that would have been like, sorry, Gail.
• 37:52
  [SPEAKER_01]: You got to have.
• 37:53
[SPEAKER_04]: They already kind of did that with the cabin in the woods.
• 37:56
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 37:56
[SPEAKER_04]: There's this idea that the weed they were smoking was like, I don't know, it was the opposite.
• 38:02
[SPEAKER_04]: They were using like this forest myths for like wiping their minds clean and changing the characters personality.
• 38:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm not talking about changing the personality.
• 38:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Because the killer is instead of trying to recreate or revisit,
• 38:14
[SPEAKER_04]: stab stuff or screws or screen stuff it's they're trying to they're playing with all the shit the fans talk about yeah all the fan theories all of the fan canon uh you know a lot of people say three doesn't count there's also a commentary throughout the screen movies and I wish they had brought this up in screen seven because screen seven is out of time it's part of a series it doesn't feel like it's common to count anything relevant it doesn't really connect anything that's happened in the last
• 38:44
[SPEAKER_04]: There was a lot of dialogue about how media and negatively influences people.
• 38:49
[SPEAKER_04]: We mentioned it how watching horror movies Warps your brain and makes you violent which was actually like a hot button issue in the mid-90s And there was a lot of and yeah like how Will violent media turn kids violent will it just sensitize kids to violence and it was always an absurd argument
• 39:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Which is weird because we see what social media is literally doing to our brains and it's kind of fucking with us.
• 39:13
  [SPEAKER_04]: To that!
• 39:14
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, have a killer who is on Reddit or on Facebook channel all day.
• 39:19
[SPEAKER_04]: There's so much ripe ground to use the screen franchise to really kind of dig up and use this thing that was designed to satirize and designed to comment on what horrors like and design
• 39:34
[SPEAKER_04]: to comment on hysteria in the media and just flop out this thing that is just a regular old slasher.
• 39:41
[SPEAKER_01]: What about a screen movie where the killer is going after online critics?
• 39:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Fine of the horror genre.
• 39:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Why not hire us to listen to him or the camera don't even pass It's fine, but listen, I think we fallen into a little bit Well, they're now we're talking about what we wish it had exactly my point and that's not great criticism But I think if you look at the root of what we're talking about We're talking about ideas we had that would have been more fun than the movie we saw What's at the core of that the movie isn't very fun the movie is not fun?
• 40:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think it's a little fun And here's the thing that I'm frustrated by because a lot of I think it is
• 40:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Embarrassing thematically.
• 40:17
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it has very little to say except you know what was great
• 40:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Kevin Williams in a net of Campbell both of whom are backed by the way, I think there's a lot of great scenes in this movie.
• 40:30
[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of the horror scenes, the suspense scenes are really well crafted or very suspenseful.
• 40:35
  [SPEAKER_01]: Good violence.
• 40:36
  [SPEAKER_01]: There's a real fucking gore.
• 40:38
[SPEAKER_04]: Character gets like a splatterly gory like sliced open and one scene.
• 40:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's a really great, there's a really great kill in like a high school.
• 40:47
[SPEAKER_01]: theater that is really memorable.
• 40:49
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's one of the better kills in the whole franchise.
• 40:51
[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think it's one of the best kills in the franchise, but the goryest kill in the franchise is definitely in the smoke.
• 40:57
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's fucking gross.
• 40:58
  [SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate it.
• 41:00
  [SPEAKER_01]: You're pushing it.
• 41:00
[SPEAKER_01]: You gotta find some way to make your mark.
• 41:02
  [SPEAKER_01]: But
• 41:03
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not saying anything, which is frustrating for a screen movie because of the very least.
• 41:07
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, I think six is the reason why I think six is the second worst in the franchise, even though I like it, is because that doesn't have much to say either.
• 41:16
[SPEAKER_01]: It touches on, I do like there's one thing I like about six where after this after
• 41:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Like everyone's like, oh my god, what a hero.
• 41:27
[SPEAKER_01]: What an amazing woman who saved her life and a few of her friends from a killer who killed all of her other friends, Hazah.
• 41:33
[SPEAKER_01]: And then it's scream six, Melissa Barraera, everyone fucking hates her.
• 41:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 41:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Because of the internet, the internet is such a fucking misogynist entity that instead of saying, you know, who's great for saving the day and killing that serial killer, this girl, it's saying, you know, who probably did it and that poor boy had nothing to do with it.
• 41:52
  [SPEAKER_01]: this girl.
• 41:54
  [SPEAKER_01]: Fuck you.
• 41:55
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 41:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And I wish they lean into that because that what that happens early on and I'm like this is so fucking relatable.
• 42:00
  [SPEAKER_01]: This is so good.
• 42:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 42:01
[SPEAKER_01]: But like we're talking about how it's not really about anything which is frustrating.
• 42:04
[SPEAKER_01]: But what I do think is that on a purely mechanical level, here is a series of kills.
• 42:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Here is a series of suspense sequences.
• 42:14
[SPEAKER_01]: That stuff is okay, I think there's watchable screen movie.
• 42:18
  [SPEAKER_04]: I just don't think it's a good screen.
• 42:19
  [SPEAKER_04]: There's good action sequences.
• 42:21
  [SPEAKER_04]: There's good kills, there's good violence.
• 42:23
[SPEAKER_04]: It's all staged incredibly well.
• 42:26
[SPEAKER_04]: There's a good sense of mounting tension.
• 42:28
[SPEAKER_04]: The problem was the ending is so removed from it.
• 42:33
[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm not going to reveal anything about who the killers are.
• 42:35
  [SPEAKER_04]: That's irrelevant.
• 42:36
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, they're going to say it's irrelevant.
• 42:38
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 42:39
[SPEAKER_04]: They're going to, they would just look big two people at a place that I was or three or four or whatever.
• 42:44
[SPEAKER_04]: As the credits were rolling, actually sent you a text, it's like, did you get the same killers in your theater?
• 42:52
[SPEAKER_04]: like a clue situation where they sent different endings to different theaters and like the killers were different because it felt so just grafted on to the rest of the movie.
• 43:02
[SPEAKER_04]: Kevin Williams and you said that so good in her to miss and because the reveal was so disappointing it made sure there anything that came before it was meaningless.
• 43:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Well yeah because it not only was it not only was it just disappointing to find out who did it and why and how but it was disappointing
• 43:21
[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't funny in general, like there really wasn't anything like there was no great big set p's There was no really memorable way to conclude it.
• 43:28
[SPEAKER_01]: It was basically like oh was This this is the solution and it's like oh So you're saying it was the person who hadn't shown up in a while
• 43:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Kevin Williams said, you used to be brilliant at this.
• 43:43
[SPEAKER_01]: You used to be so good.
• 43:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Screen 2 was impossible to figure out at the time and it played totally fair.
• 43:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Screen 2, that's a screen 1, screen 1, was impossible to figure out and it was totally fair.
• 43:53
  [SPEAKER_01]: Screen 2,
• 43:54
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the ending was not quite as good, but all of the characters are really rich, and they all had a really good motive, potentially, so that it could have been anyone, like literally any one, it would have been fine.
• 44:06
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 44:07
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I think from three onward, they started getting telegraphed really hard.
• 44:13
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think I don't think I've been surprised by a screen movie ending.
• 44:17
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, since three, I was surprised with seven because there's no way to predict seven.
• 44:22
[SPEAKER_01]: I think seven is basically just who hasn't been around.
• 44:25
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 44:26
[SPEAKER_01]: We've got this huge cast, one of them hasn't been here in a while, it's probably them.
• 44:31
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think if you just look at the mechanics of a who-done-it, the not-good who-done-its can boil down to that.
• 44:37
[SPEAKER_01]: This is one of the reasons why screen one was so impossible to figure out.
• 44:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Because if you're just saying, well, who isn't around when the kills happen?
• 44:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody, yeah, everyone has a, has an alibi for at least one murder.
• 44:48
[SPEAKER_01]: There is no conceivable way, one person did.
• 44:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh fuck you fuck you that was so novel at the time that was so fucking mind blowing at the time and now It's like the the standard as if there's never been a serial killer who didn't have a partner Is if that's like the the the norm and yeah, it's happened and they like and they never even played with that Like the the twist from the first was carried over into too many of the sequels
• 45:17
[SPEAKER_04]: It the shocking thing about part three is that there there's one killer.
• 45:21
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that was a little unusual.
• 45:23
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, um, but How come it was never like seven or 12 or the whole town make turn it into 2000 maniacs I don't care seven by the seventh sequel you realize there've been so many copycats here
• 45:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Could this possibly be a coincidence there was got to be an online forum that all these people are going to or some weird cult thing that someone is leading like that feels like the natural extension of it because the longer it goes the more you have to reckon with This keeps happening yeah, and that's something you have to deal with which is one of the reasons why making trying to make these things plausible makes them
• 46:02
[SPEAKER_01]: less make less sense narrative like yeah there's a bit in this movie where someone says oh you thought this was what was happening Well that would have been stupid.
• 46:10
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm thinking of myself Yeah, and what have been more entertaining than what we got So I'm frustrated by this movie.
• 46:17
[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's a lot of fun to be had in it I think Sydney Prescott is still a good character.
• 46:22
[SPEAKER_01]: I think Nick Campbell is still really great I think the supporting cast is pretty strong.
• 46:26
[SPEAKER_01]: I love seeing the twins again even though they have nothing to do
• 46:31
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just in service of extremely little.
• 46:34
[SPEAKER_01]: And ultimately, I'm just annoyed that we were going somewhere with the Melissa Brader General or take a characters.
• 46:43
[SPEAKER_01]: And I understand the circumstances under which Melissa or take a, not most of the time.
• 46:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Melissa Brader General or take a, yeah, under which Melissa Brader was fired, and General or take a left and then Christopher Landon who was gonna direct this one left.
• 46:57
[SPEAKER_01]: That he would have made a great screen movie.
• 47:00
[SPEAKER_01]: I understand all of that.
• 47:03
[SPEAKER_01]: I understand that that's if they're going to keep making the movie and some people think that this movie should be completely ignored.
• 47:09
  [SPEAKER_01]: That didn't happen.
• 47:10
[SPEAKER_01]: More people saw it than ever.
• 47:12
[SPEAKER_01]: But regardless, I think I don't mind the digression.
• 47:17
[SPEAKER_01]: I mind the idea that none of what happened for the last two hit movies matters.
• 47:25
  [SPEAKER_01]: That I'm offended by.
• 47:26
[SPEAKER_04]: I will say that you should ignore this movie just because it's a bad movie.
• 47:31
[SPEAKER_04]: You shouldn't buy a ticket to it.
• 47:32
[SPEAKER_04]: You should watch a better movie.
• 47:34
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 47:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I was thinking about this because I know a lot of critics, especially online critics, we're saying we're not even going to review it.
• 47:40
  [SPEAKER_01]: I respect that.
• 47:41
[SPEAKER_01]: That's stick by your guns.
• 47:42
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's great.
• 47:43
[SPEAKER_01]: But I was thinking about one thing I learned about last summer when I was at this critics retreat, was how very different schools of criticism are in different criticisms that are in media.
• 47:56
[SPEAKER_01]: And one thing I was all of a sudden realizing is that, you know, and this sounds like something obvious But until you really sit down and think about the ramifications, you might have realized how important it is When we're reviewing the movie, unless one day there's like a director's cutter or something, that's it Yeah, that's the version that everyone's gonna see In theater every night is different
• 48:18
[SPEAKER_01]: They change the cast, they change the blocking, they change the way a line is delivered.
• 48:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Every new production is different.
• 48:24
[SPEAKER_01]: So when you're critiquing theater, you're not just saying what works and what doesn't, you're documenting the history of this performance.
• 48:33
  [SPEAKER_01]: This happened this way.
• 48:35
[SPEAKER_01]: This is important, this is the way this will be remembered.
• 48:39
[SPEAKER_01]: So when I was debating what I wanted to review this, I was thinking to myself,
• 48:44
[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to see this movie.
• 48:46
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not encouraging you to see this movie, even if I liked it.
• 48:47
[SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't be saying you have to go see this movie, but I think that if you don't want to see this movie, there should be a record of what happened in it and what a reaction to the movie was.
• 48:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Apparently, I over thought that, and most people didn't care, but I thought that was worth doing, was just documenting what it was like for posterity.
• 49:07
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 49:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, and ultimately what it was like was the worst screen movie, but still not the worst movie I'm gonna be reviewing this week and certainly not the worst horror movie I'm gonna be reviewing this week, so uh, preview of that.
• 49:19
  [SPEAKER_01]: Let's move on.
• 49:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, there's one of the movie we both saw and this is a pirate adventure.
• 49:25
[SPEAKER_01]: It's Pirates of the Caribbean.
• 49:26
[SPEAKER_01]: If they're pirates and they're in the Caribbean, which is where I made a lot of them were.
• 49:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Like this thing didn't make that up.
• 49:32
[SPEAKER_04]: And I'll say this, um, this baby the first, uh,
• 49:38
[SPEAKER_04]: Pirate movie, set in the Caribbean, directed by a Caribbean director.
• 49:43
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if that's true, but it sounds true.
• 49:45
[SPEAKER_04]: Frank E. Flowers is from the Cayman Islands.
• 49:49
[SPEAKER_04]: I would have to look through the history of pirates of the Caribbean movies, not just the Disney ones.
• 49:57
[SPEAKER_04]: There's all the films about pirates in the Caribbean.
• 49:59
[SPEAKER_01]: If you look at the history of cinema, like the 30s, 40s, and the 50s, and even the 60s, there were a ton of pirate movies.
• 50:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Most of them are terribly well-remembered, but they were a ton.
• 50:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but it was an interesting time in history.
• 50:10
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's interesting.
• 50:11
[SPEAKER_04]: Hi, it's became mythic cinema his heroes.
• 50:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think largely to people like Earl Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks.
• 50:19
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, Captain Blood's pretty awesome.
• 50:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Captain Blood's tight the seahawk is tight.
• 50:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, what was it the fucking mirror was that the one that Peter Loughford was in?
• 50:28
[SPEAKER_01]: I was a brand Lancaster and it was got those two confused but there were a lot of pirate movies in the earlier of Hollywood when they were still making a couple of westerns and that sort of thing and there was these were all tales of daring do and then
• 50:43
[SPEAKER_01]: The franchise stop bringing in people and unlike Westerns which are still relatively cheap the shoot Pirate movies were not terribly cheap the shoot because it was on water and boasts and a lot of extra costumes And so they really fell out of favor and we started getting very few of them in effect the whole genre for decades felt cursed Got cutthroat island yellow beard Incredibly unpopular movies
• 51:07
[SPEAKER_04]: And because they were so expensive to shoot, they typically lost money.
• 51:11
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 51:11
[SPEAKER_04]: Cupter Island was one of the biggest bombs of all time destroyed a studio.
• 51:15
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 51:16
  [SPEAKER_04]: And it's average.
• 51:18
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I think it sucks.
• 51:19
  [SPEAKER_04]: It's okay.
• 51:20
[SPEAKER_04]: It doesn't have a lot of personality.
• 51:22
[SPEAKER_01]: I like Harrell and Felvin.
• 51:24
  [SPEAKER_01]: I like Gina Davis.
• 51:25
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that a whole movie where Gina Davis plays the pirate is a great idea.
• 51:29
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the production design is fantastic.
• 51:31
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the story is terrible and it's based like death.
• 51:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I cannot get into that movie.
• 51:36
[SPEAKER_01]: I want to like that movie.
• 51:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: You know me.
• 51:38
[SPEAKER_01]: If there's movie that everyone hates and I love, I will tell you.
• 51:41
[SPEAKER_01]: I will be excited to tell you.
• 51:42
[SPEAKER_01]: I want to love it.
• 51:43
  [SPEAKER_01]: It sucks.
• 51:44
[SPEAKER_04]: And I think the bluff has a lot in common with Cutthroat Island, and that this is an Amazon film, straight to prime video, and it is a lavish production.
• 51:56
[SPEAKER_04]: It has fantastic production design.
• 51:59
[SPEAKER_04]: It has a lot of accurate, um, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh,
• 52:02
  [SPEAKER_04]: a geographical detail.
• 52:05
[SPEAKER_04]: It has really great costumes.
• 52:06
[SPEAKER_04]: The action is done incredibly well.
• 52:09
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a very little bit takes place on the open water, which I'm sure is a great idea.
• 52:13
[SPEAKER_04]: There's a few fun little tiny details that I really appreciated.
• 52:16
  [SPEAKER_04]: There's a scene where
• 52:17
[SPEAKER_04]: the Priyanka Chopra character goes down into a cave where she's been keeping all of her story of treasures because she used to be a pirate queen and she like touches her torch to select some wicks along the wall and they sort of burn along the wall and light all the torches.
• 52:31
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like little stuff like that.
• 52:33
[SPEAKER_04]: That's fun adventure movie stuff.
• 52:34
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 52:36
[SPEAKER_04]: The movie is paced just slightly wrong.
• 52:40
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I agree.
• 52:41
[SPEAKER_04]: for us to have any excitement for these moments.
• 52:45
[SPEAKER_04]: So let's, let's, let's get people to know what the movie is.
• 52:47
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so it's set in, according to an opening, chiron, the dying days of the pirates.
• 52:53
  [SPEAKER_04]: of the Caribbean.
• 52:54
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, like piracy was about to come to an end.
• 52:57
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 52:58
[SPEAKER_04]: But there's still like a few lingering pirates that have like a record.
• 53:03
[SPEAKER_04]: The creator of the crop.
• 53:04
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, one of the last pirates is played by Carl Urban.
• 53:07
[SPEAKER_04]: He has a track down this other sailor and taken over ship because he happens to be married to Priyanka Chopra, who is off on the bluff.
• 53:16
[SPEAKER_04]: She's off on a like a came in islands, raising their family.
• 53:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she married that captain.
• 53:21
[SPEAKER_01]: She's been, she, everyone, as far as she knows, like her sister-in-law and her son, thinks she's just a mom.
• 53:27
  [SPEAKER_01]: They don't realize that she's an X-pyrach queen.
• 53:29
[SPEAKER_01]: She stole a bunch of gold from Carl Urban, and he finally has tracked her down, and he wants it back.
• 53:34
[SPEAKER_01]: So all of those pirates show up on her tiny island, and it basically turns into a die hard,
• 53:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, it basically turns into a die, because they take over the island and Priyanka Chopra is a badass and it's up to her to say for kids and by extension everyone else on the island, although they they basically throw them in a church and don't mention them for an hour.
• 53:54
  [SPEAKER_01]: They're right now.
• 53:55
  [SPEAKER_01]: They're kind of forgotten.
• 53:56
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, to be fair, they actually like set that up pretty carefully.
• 53:59
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's what one character is a priest.
• 54:00
  [SPEAKER_04]: They say we
• 54:01
[SPEAKER_04]: we know you can't take part in the action where we are going to hide you in this church like this they don't just forget about those kids well the movie the movie just which is the first time the movie doesn't give it shit after all basically okay five but now it's just but it's coerban hunting down pionca chopper and her kids in the jungle yeah there's there's a there's a pretty uh excellent opening sequence um where it's sort of like a home invasion siege uh there's a lot of blood i appreciate how violent the movie is like fights where people actually get their limbs cut and blood sprays
• 54:29
[SPEAKER_04]: Greg and Chopper is a very convincing action here.
• 54:31
[SPEAKER_04]: She does a lot of the work.
• 54:33
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 54:33
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, she's a convincing action here on that.
• 54:35
[SPEAKER_04]: She fights very well, and she has that kind of taciturn steely action hero quality, that type of role requires.
• 54:43
[SPEAKER_04]: What the role required, however, to make the film more interesting, was a little bit more pizzazz.
• 54:51
  [SPEAKER_04]: These are pirates.
• 54:52
  [SPEAKER_04]: They're big colorful characters.
• 54:53
[SPEAKER_04]: They should be yelling and acting like clingons.
• 54:56
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 54:57
[SPEAKER_01]: At the very least, if you're going to be a famous pirate or a dreaded pirate, you should have a personality.
• 55:04
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 55:04
[SPEAKER_01]: You need to have an affiliate to follow you or be afraid of you.
• 55:08
  [SPEAKER_01]: And very least.
• 55:09
[SPEAKER_04]: And Carl Urban is certainly capable of playing roles like that.
• 55:12
[SPEAKER_04]: I've seen him play roles like that.
• 55:14
[SPEAKER_04]: But he kind of seems to be tamping it down and making his character a little bit more grounded in this, which does the film a disservice.
• 55:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, he needs to be hamming it out.
• 55:22
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, especially as the villain, he played a really hammy character in like a thore movie.
• 55:28
[SPEAKER_04]: He knows how to do this stuff, and Priyanka Chopra, capable action star, you know, she gears up and puts like swords on her back.
• 55:38
[SPEAKER_04]: Confidence has the battle, yeah, it's like,
• 55:41
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not getting any sense that she was actually like a really threatening pirate queen at one point.
• 55:48
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a little bit like there's a turn like, oh, uh, like in, uh, another range of a lungus can I. Yeah, that movie Gina Davis plays a woman who has amnesia.
• 55:57
[SPEAKER_01]: She marries has, like, as a stepdaughter now.
• 56:00
  [SPEAKER_01]: She's a very conventional.
• 56:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Housewife seems very very happy, but she realizes that she's got like these like triggers in her and she's actually like a bad ass with knives and stuff And by the end of the movie when she realizes who she used to be and she used to be you know a hitman basically That's a very different her yeah, and that's interesting and that's and she plays that really really well They're grand Chopra never goes back to who she was never feels like there's like a threat
• 56:27
[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, I'm gonna go back to my old life and I was fucked up in my old life.
• 56:31
[SPEAKER_01]: I killed a lot of people and maybe, you know, there's a pullback story in which he's very sympathetic.
• 56:36
[SPEAKER_01]: He was kidnapped by pirates, there's becoming one of them as the only way to survive.
• 56:39
  [SPEAKER_01]: All of that's fine.
• 56:41
[SPEAKER_01]: You still have to do some hardcore shit.
• 56:43
  [SPEAKER_01]: And that's missing.
• 56:44
[SPEAKER_01]: I think this movie is frustrating because it's, by default, it's the best pirate movie we've had in a while.
• 56:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Because we haven't had that many.
• 56:54
[SPEAKER_01]: We haven't had a lot of them.
• 56:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And the ones that we have had of most have been pirates of the Caribbean sequels.
• 56:58
[SPEAKER_01]: And after the first couple of sequels, those are uniformly terrible.
• 57:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 57:01
[SPEAKER_01]: So if you want a pirate movie, this isn't, this isn't bad.
• 57:04
[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't a bad movie, but there's, it's one of those movies where I think it's too important to talk about what keeps it from being great.
• 57:09
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 57:11
[SPEAKER_01]: There's two types of movies that they could have done with this.
• 57:14
[SPEAKER_01]: One, all the characters have a lot of personality, there's a lot of pizzazz, there's a lot of theatricality, it could have been really fun.
• 57:20
[SPEAKER_01]: The other is you go like the raid.
• 57:23
[SPEAKER_04]: It becomes like grounded and earthy and really brutal.
• 57:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Just constant, exciting, action choreography violence.
• 57:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And there are sequences in this movie where it feels like that's what they were going for.
• 57:33
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's like, there's a runner in one, one of the action sequences.
• 57:36
[SPEAKER_01]: But the runner doesn't act, the runner actually stops before the action sequence stops.
• 57:41
  [SPEAKER_01]: So it feels like,
• 57:43
[SPEAKER_01]: It just didn't plan it out enough, or it didn't work, and they had to cut it in half, like it just doesn't actually have that kick because you didn't fully commit to it.
• 57:52
[SPEAKER_01]: And so it doesn't have like, yeah, who cares about the plot?
• 57:56
[SPEAKER_01]: We're showing off our cool stunts.
• 57:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you can get away with that for a night of interview.
• 58:00
[SPEAKER_01]: It was not yourself out, but this John Wick is mostly that.
• 58:04
[SPEAKER_01]: The first one at the very least.
• 58:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like you simple set up boom, nothing but cool shit after that.
• 58:10
[SPEAKER_01]: And the shit in this movie is adequately cool.
• 58:13
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's a four star cool.
• 58:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Even if it was a two star movie, it would have balanced out fine.
• 58:17
  [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
• 58:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Or if it was an amazing story and two star action, also would have balanced out fine.
• 58:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Ideally, it would have been both.
• 58:24
[SPEAKER_01]: But you kept it, like the can't have it all at two and a half stars.
• 58:28
[SPEAKER_04]: Even if you have like a really tiny budget and you can't do the big action, maybe you can blow up one ship, but you have a lot of really interesting characters, a lot of really interesting character moments, a lot of humor to it.
• 58:39
[SPEAKER_04]: That would have also been great, that's like an old fashion beam movie.
• 58:43
  [SPEAKER_04]: This is like...
• 58:45
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like halfway there on every front and that's frustrating because there's so it's because it's so slick It's such a big production and then I was I was reading up on the movie after it was over And I realized after the fact that this was produced by the Russo brothers and it all started to make sense
• 59:03
[SPEAKER_04]: because the yeah, the Russo brothers are notoriously bland filmmakers.
• 59:08
[SPEAKER_04]: They know how to stage big, complicated action sequences, but not put together, interesting, character moments.
• 59:17
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, this is the reason their Avengers movies worked so well is because they didn't have to do all of that.
• 59:22
[SPEAKER_04]: It was all set up by the all the previous movies in the series.
• 59:25
[SPEAKER_01]: No, the reverse JJ Abrams.
• 59:27
[SPEAKER_01]: JJ Abrams is great at setting things up and bad at paying them off.
• 59:29
[SPEAKER_01]: If you set everything up for the Russo brothers, they can pay it off fine, but they just can't do that themselves.
• 59:35
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they don't know how to set things up, interest in me.
• 59:38
[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, they know how to handle big budgets and big productions, uh, uh, what was the film?
• 59:43
[SPEAKER_04]: The electric state, one of the most expensive movies of all time.
• 59:46
  [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
• 59:46
  [SPEAKER_04]: Boring to watch.
• 59:47
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 59:47
[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, a lot of visual stuff still boring to watch, not interesting characters, really predictable stuff, predictable beats.
• 59:54
[SPEAKER_04]: And I started to feel, uh, that kind of thing with the bluff.
• 59:59
[SPEAKER_04]: I do appreciate that there's so much detail in it.
• 1:00:02
[SPEAKER_04]: I appreciate that it's not all a theft space that is actually a little bit more fight and stunt-based.
• 1:00:07
  [SPEAKER_04]: I like that.
• 1:00:08
[SPEAKER_04]: I wish in a pirate movie, they're apparently at least one sea battle.
• 1:00:14
[SPEAKER_00]: It's definitely a pirate movie, but it feels like you're really missing out on a chance.
• 1:00:19
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, like, open with a good sea battle.
• 1:00:22
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:00:22
[SPEAKER_04]: Prepare for broadside cannons and they open with a brief
• 1:00:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Add it could see that.
• 1:00:27
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's it's all and it's at 90.
• 1:00:28
[SPEAKER_01]: So you can't really see a lot It's clearly didn't have enough people on set to make it look like you know Master commander or whole you know many army people fighting in the top you got us you got a pirate movie I want to see one pirate swing on a rope Around the mast and land right now.
• 1:00:45
[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see a guy jump on a sail with a dagger and go
• 1:00:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Cut it as he slides down I mean like yeah, someone's gonna have to fix that and that's gonna suck But it was so worth it Like how are we gonna get out of here with his boat?
• 1:00:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Man, this is gonna take like a week to sew up and like fuck man.
• 1:01:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
• 1:01:01
[SPEAKER_04]: I just didn't see cool Like you would think at the very least they pull the pirate ship up and he'd be flying the Jolly Roger And he fired up the cannons at someone's home on land because that's what's been honest here if this was like
• 1:01:13
  [SPEAKER_01]: we're going for realism.
• 1:01:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: That would be different.
• 1:01:16
[SPEAKER_01]: You can't do all of that.
• 1:01:18
[SPEAKER_01]: That's not, you know, that's a movie stuff, right?
• 1:01:21
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's okay.
• 1:01:22
[SPEAKER_01]: You want to mute it.
• 1:01:23
  [SPEAKER_01]: Fine.
• 1:01:24
[SPEAKER_01]: This is still pirate die hard.
• 1:01:26
[SPEAKER_01]: This is still a movie stick.
• 1:01:29
[SPEAKER_01]: You have the, there's a scene in the movie for me.
• 1:01:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Where Priyanka Chopper is trying to get away with their kids and they like cross like a little river and in like a little skiff.
• 1:01:42
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the pirates are like, well, just fucking get him and let's just wait over there and it turns out the water's full of crocodiles.
• 1:01:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and they all get eaten.
• 1:01:48
  [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, that's cool.
• 1:01:49
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's fun shit.
• 1:01:51
[SPEAKER_01]: I want more of that pirates versus fucking giant lizards.
• 1:01:54
  [SPEAKER_01]: I'm down man That's fucking cool.
• 1:01:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Like all of that is fun.
• 1:01:57
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's movie shit.
• 1:02:00
  [SPEAKER_01]: Hmm.
• 1:02:00
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're gonna do movie shit Do the movie shit do it well, but but I I have her time getting worked up over this though because ultimately I feel like this is
• 1:02:12
[SPEAKER_01]: And we talked about this a lot, but the phrase B movie is sort of misunderstood and it's typically appropriated for films that just are kind of shlucky.
• 1:02:22
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:02:23
  [SPEAKER_04]: Of lesser quality.
• 1:02:23
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:02:24
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's not necessarily what they were.
• 1:02:25
[SPEAKER_01]: They were just movies that the studio put a little less time and effort into didn't have the big stars or the head bigger stars who were on the way and we had to put them in something.
• 1:02:34
[SPEAKER_01]: These were movies that showed second on a real after a movie that we went out with the most successful.
• 1:02:39
[SPEAKER_01]: and they put real money in effort into.
• 1:02:41
[SPEAKER_01]: And then it's like, well, okay, so we had, I don't know, forbidden planet, great.
• 1:02:46
[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll pair that up with this film noir we cranked out in a week to test out a new director and to give one of our aging actors something to do.
• 1:02:55
[SPEAKER_01]: That movie might still be good.
• 1:02:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Touch of evil was a B movie.
• 1:02:58
  [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
• 1:02:58
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:02:59
[SPEAKER_01]: So like this feels like a B movie in that, it's not that
• 1:03:04
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a little slucky, but what it mostly is not the least bit complicated.
• 1:03:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Not the least bit complicated.
• 1:03:09
[SPEAKER_01]: It is a stripper, it's a straightforward action movie with a cast that's doing a pretty good job and it is abundantly clear that this was not a studio's top priority and that we just sort of cranked this one out and I'm sure it was a little expensive, I'm sure people got paid because it's an Amazon streaming movie.
• 1:03:28
[SPEAKER_01]: but it has the sense of like if this came out in the 90s, this would be like a $20 million movie.
• 1:03:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that would start like Gabriel Burr, that's the bad guy.
• 1:03:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Was he in the kidnap or ambushed or something?
• 1:03:44
  [SPEAKER_01]: It was one time.
• 1:03:45
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
• 1:03:46
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
• 1:03:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Gabriel Burr was in a pirate movie.
• 1:03:48
  [SPEAKER_01]: I think he was.
• 1:03:48
  [SPEAKER_01]: What was that?
• 1:03:50
  [SPEAKER_01]: What was that?
• 1:03:50
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
• 1:03:51
[SPEAKER_01]: It was a pirate movie.
• 1:03:53
[SPEAKER_01]: It came out like the early 90s that was like a kid stopping pirates from doing bad things.
• 1:04:03
[SPEAKER_04]: It wasn't the pirate movie.
• 1:04:04
  [SPEAKER_04]: Was it?
• 1:04:05
  [SPEAKER_04]: No.
• 1:04:05
[SPEAKER_04]: Because there was a movie called The Pirate movie.
• 1:04:08
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:04:08
  [SPEAKER_04]: No.
• 1:04:09
[SPEAKER_04]: Which was different from Pirates.
• 1:04:11
  [SPEAKER_04]: The Palanski movie.
• 1:04:12
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, God.
• 1:04:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I always confuse that with the elevator.
• 1:04:15
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure I've ever seen Pirates.
• 1:04:16
  [SPEAKER_04]: I haven't seen Pirates.
• 1:04:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Palanski made a pirate movie.
• 1:04:19
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:04:22
[SPEAKER_04]: which also was a huge that yeah that that was a lot of money to and i'm gonna compare this movie to one i reviewed just a couple weeks ago called the wrecking crew um... it was that film star it was a buddy cop mismatched buddy cop movie the cops were brothers they're played by a date but he's uh... and jeez mama was set in Hawaii
• 1:04:40
[SPEAKER_04]: And I noted that it felt like a second screen kind of a movie where they repeat a lot of plot points and they give a lot of really bare information to make it as clear as possible because they know people aren't paying full attention and they want to be able to follow the story even if they're not looking at it.
• 1:04:56
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't get quite the same sense with the bluff, but it does feel of a piece where it is this gigantic, big, slick, mostly action picture that feels like a distraction more than anything.
• 1:05:11
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a little galling that these gigantic streamers have the money to make these bigger movies and they can just sort of dump buckets and buckets of cash into action sequences and big stars.
• 1:05:26
[SPEAKER_04]: and not the scripts, and not the ideas and not develop like really daring, interesting thing.
• 1:05:32
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the script costs the same.
• 1:05:34
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:05:35
[SPEAKER_01]: No matter, like, you know, you might pay someone else to punch it up or do a rewrite, but like... Or come up with like a fascinating new concept with a pirate movie.
• 1:05:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, like the script is where, like, big, awesome, exciting changes are cheap.
• 1:05:50
[SPEAKER_01]: when he actually started filming it that's when he gets to the movie I was thinking it was called shipwrecked shipwrecked and this is our Gabriel burn as it's quite a young boy who's like working it's like a deck hand or something on a ship and he finds out everyone on a ship is pirates and he has the fight off the pirate or something like that.
• 1:06:06
[SPEAKER_01]: It came out in 1990 it was directed by Mills Gop who directed you remember that movie oh remember that Carl Urban movie pathfinder
• 1:06:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was like a Viking race by Native Americans who fought off other Vikings.
• 1:06:18
[SPEAKER_01]: He directed the original version of that in 1987.
• 1:06:21
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
• 1:06:22
[SPEAKER_01]: So, okay, all comes full circle.
• 1:06:24
[SPEAKER_01]: It all comes full circle.
• 1:06:26
  [SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna move on.
• 1:06:29
[SPEAKER_01]: I saw a real piece of crap.
• 1:06:32
[SPEAKER_01]: It is called psycho killer.
• 1:06:34
[SPEAKER_01]: It is written by Andrew Kevin Walker, so we got another blast on the 90s past writer who also briefly shot to huge popularity because he wrote the movie seven She wrote the movie seven with her frame in Brad Pitt.
• 1:06:50
[SPEAKER_01]: It was David Fincher's second movie, but was the first one he had creative control over and it really shot a screen to the stratosphere and you know what seven rules
• 1:06:59
[SPEAKER_04]: Seven is so so bleak yeah that it's almost comedic.
• 1:07:05
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, like it goes way over the top with how Yeah, no, it's trying to be really edgy, but it gets away with it and I think a lot of it is because
• 1:07:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: cinematography is amazing.
• 1:07:16
[SPEAKER_01]: The script considering what a like a psilacious high concept it is.
• 1:07:19
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a serial killer killing people based on the seven deadly sins.
• 1:07:22
[SPEAKER_01]: The script is much better than you think it was and actually hear some about things.
• 1:07:26
[SPEAKER_04]: There's a lot of discussion as to what's going on.
• 1:07:28
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, there's a security to it.
• 1:07:30
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, the characters themselves are all kind of losing hope in the face of this like bleak world.
• 1:07:35
[SPEAKER_04]: It's the city is never named.
• 1:07:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, yeah, it's every city.
• 1:07:38
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like at any gigantic city where violence might as well be, might as well be Gotham for all takes.
• 1:07:43
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, that was a big deal, and then he made the movie 8mm starring Nicholas Cage director by Joel Schumacher, which was about the snuff film, investigating a snuff film.
• 1:07:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was an urban legend about snuff films, and it was reasonably successful.
• 1:08:00
[SPEAKER_01]: He kind of got known as like the Dark Thriller Guy, and it's been a while since we've seen like Andrew Kevin Walker script of any kind.
• 1:08:06
  [SPEAKER_01]: And now there's a new one, it's been,
• 1:08:09
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's my understanding.
• 1:08:10
[SPEAKER_01]: It was filmed years ago and it's only just came out in February and that's always a good sign.
• 1:08:14
[SPEAKER_01]: And this one is about a killer who's mental health.
• 1:08:22
  [SPEAKER_01]: I question.
• 1:08:24
[SPEAKER_04]: Hence the title, uh, uh, I would imagine like a killer, somebody who can be described as a killer, that is someone who killed some of the definitively something that they've done enough to warrant that moniker.
• 1:08:37
[SPEAKER_04]: Probably probably probably has some some sort of mental health.
• 1:08:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a somewhat sensitive title, uh, in part because of the terminology, in part because the talking heads deserve better than this movie.
• 1:08:49
  [SPEAKER_01]: talking heads.
• 1:08:50
[SPEAKER_04]: Do they use the talking heads?
• 1:08:51
  [SPEAKER_01]: No!
• 1:08:52
[SPEAKER_01]: And I, but I have to imagine there was a discussion about whether we're allowed to use it or not.
• 1:08:56
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think so.
• 1:08:58
[SPEAKER_01]: I imagine David Bern wouldn't say no.
• 1:09:00
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he would, especially once he read the script, because first off, psycho killer by the talking heads, great song.
• 1:09:07
[SPEAKER_01]: I, when I was looking up this movie, I was just trying to find an anecdote where David Bern said,
• 1:09:12
[SPEAKER_01]: he wanted to imagine Alice Cooper writing a Randy Newman song and that's what psycho killer was, which is pretty good, but so that's a very playfully dark song.
• 1:09:25
[SPEAKER_01]: There's nothing playful about the movie Psycho Killer.
• 1:09:27
[SPEAKER_01]: It starts Georgina Campbell as a cop at the beginning of the movie, her husband who's also a cop.
• 1:09:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Pulls over a guy on a highway in the middle in the Midwest Total bullshit by the way Like he's just driving behind this guy in the freeway and then the guy realizes this cop is tailgating me So he just pulls over to let the cop pass and the cop says You know, nox and the thing Watch it pull over
• 1:09:54
[SPEAKER_00]: You were telling your cop.
• 1:09:56
[SPEAKER_00]: What are we even doing here?
• 1:09:57
[SPEAKER_00]: Why did I pull it?
• 1:09:58
  [SPEAKER_01]: You're harassing.
• 1:09:59
[SPEAKER_01]: It's always like, I guess I got to run these plates.
• 1:10:01
[SPEAKER_01]: So like this guy's a fucking dick.
• 1:10:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And it turns out he just coincidentally pulled over a serial killer who's been plaguing America.
• 1:10:08
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's been driving across the country.
• 1:10:10
  [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
• 1:10:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Killing people, stealing pharmaceutical drugs, taking like all kinds of like uh, uh, uppers and hallucinogenic drugs, just on like this one prolonged murder trip, literally.
• 1:10:21
  [SPEAKER_01]: All right.
• 1:10:22
  [SPEAKER_01]: All right.
• 1:10:22
  [SPEAKER_01]: And so, okay.
• 1:10:23
[SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of like a trigger kind of fucking, you know, mounting a helmet murder stop.
• 1:10:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm on with you All right, you know, I get it, but the heat kills the husband Georgina Campbell can't stop him from getting away And now she's hunting him down You have the audience hunting him down, but she's better at it because she's the protagonist and We intercut from her
• 1:10:45
[SPEAKER_01]: uh... tracking him down uh... and that's literally it because she has no personality and i don't just mean that like Georgina Campbell isn't bringing anything to it actually think she's a she's a fine actor she's got literally nothing to work with she doesn't even have like a quirk they don't even bother to give her like yeah she just loves disco or like oh you know she's got ocd and everywhere she goes she like does everything symmetric they like a fucking tiny gimmick
• 1:11:13
[SPEAKER_01]: The happiest gimmick you could possibly find to make her a distinct individual is absent.
• 1:11:20
[SPEAKER_01]: She's just dower and committed and that's it.
• 1:11:25
[SPEAKER_01]: incredibly boring protagonist like I would teach this in a class on how not to do a protagonist.
• 1:11:30
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so bad and then we keep cutting back to the killer the killer When ever sees face Mostly because it's framed out.
• 1:11:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't have a cool mask.
• 1:11:38
[SPEAKER_01]: It looks like one of the bad guys in border lands like a cool gas mask or something.
• 1:11:44
[SPEAKER_01]: I respect any slasher movie and this technically qualifies
• 1:11:50
[SPEAKER_01]: where you can come up with a cool mask because there are only so many masks out there and it feels like a lot of the good ones are taken.
• 1:11:57
[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard to do, seriously.
• 1:11:59
[SPEAKER_01]: I just imagined you know, as a creative exercise.
• 1:12:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I'm gonna make this a fashion movie.
• 1:12:04
[SPEAKER_01]: What's the mask gonna be?
• 1:12:05
[SPEAKER_01]: It can't have been done before.
• 1:12:07
[SPEAKER_01]: It needs to be scary and it has to actually like connect to something.
• 1:12:12
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:12:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: What do you got?
• 1:12:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's hard to do.
• 1:12:16
[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of them have been done.
• 1:12:19
[SPEAKER_01]: So we keep cutting to this guy and like he stalks people, he kills them, he paints graffiti with their blood, he's a Satan worshiper, and there's this whole digressive sequence where like he stays over at Malcolm McDowell's house, because he's like a rich Satan worshiper, but he's like,
• 1:12:42
[SPEAKER_01]: a weekend warrior Satan worshipper.
• 1:12:45
  [SPEAKER_01]: He's all taught.
• 1:12:47
[SPEAKER_01]: He's really in it for the cocaine and the orgys and you can tell the serial killer is like, I don't think he actually worship Satan.
• 1:12:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, he's like, but he's like, he's just like looming.
• 1:12:58
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, um,
• 1:13:00
[SPEAKER_01]: If Jake and Belority's Heathcliff had a big brother, like that's like he's just this giant gums thing.
• 1:13:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Like everywhere he goes, it feels like he's just stomping around, got a really deep voice.
• 1:13:13
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think girls people in a laver way, and she's just like, oh, I almost found him, but if people believe me, we would've got.
• 1:13:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh man, and then that goes on for two days, uh, real time, because this movie is impermanible, and then it all culminates when he gets to his destination and we find out what he was driving towards.
• 1:13:33
[SPEAKER_01]: It looks like what it is, because it's ridiculous.
• 1:13:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell you I'll tell
• 1:13:57
  [SPEAKER_01]: You're watching, I was like, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see
• 1:14:16
[SPEAKER_01]: fill a lake with bodies and you're like, well, that's just stupid.
• 1:14:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Why were you doing that?
• 1:14:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Why were you doing that?
• 1:14:22
[SPEAKER_01]: And this isn't, this isn't the one to one, but it's just like such an absurd like sort of like that's what you were going to do.
• 1:14:27
[SPEAKER_01]: You did not need to do the serial killer thing, my dude.
• 1:14:31
[SPEAKER_01]: There are other things you could do to accomplish this terrible goal.
• 1:14:33
[SPEAKER_01]: But like it's, and then there's like this whole finale and like there's a whole thing where like the cops are there and it's like, oh man.
• 1:14:41
[SPEAKER_01]: There's nowhere in that room.
• 1:14:43
[SPEAKER_01]: There's the only one door and he's got it blocked There's no way we can get in there and save the day and everyone's like watching them from a security camera Oh, there's nothing we can do and then once the security guards guys like after a couple of minutes like oh wait There's a back door and so they go to the back door and I'm like why didn't you no one knew this?
• 1:14:58
  [SPEAKER_01]: Right there
• 1:15:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Why don't we fucking do it here?
• 1:15:02
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so badly plotted, it's so perfunctory, it's ugly to look at.
• 1:15:06
[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't movie that I feel like if this had been like made in like the 2000s when they were doing kind of the Marcus Nyspull Texas chainsaw, everything just grim for its own sake.
• 1:15:16
[SPEAKER_04]: But it would have been super, super grim, super slair.
• 1:15:19
  [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
• 1:15:20
[SPEAKER_01]: If it had been balanced by style, okay.
• 1:15:23
[SPEAKER_01]: If it had been really cool looking, if I had a fucking banger soundtrack, like you could have saved this, and at least made it watchable by going all in on-style, and the style is junk.
• 1:15:38
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just an ugly, unappreciable movie that has,
• 1:15:43
[SPEAKER_01]: very little for a moment I thought we were going to start saying something about sort of religious extremism okay we're like here's a guy who's a religious extremist and he's like like mad at extremism yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah there's only you can do with that and maybe if you can pair that to like evade jellicle Christianity or maybe just not what's whatever you can you can play with it right defiantly not about anything and it's really just
• 1:16:08
[SPEAKER_01]: It's, we talk a lot about movies and we say like, oh, I don't think it's very good.
• 1:16:11
[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is bad or whatever, but it's really rare that we see a movie from a studio wind up in theaters that feels genuinely incompetent.
• 1:16:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is, again, I think there's some people who are trying here.
• 1:16:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I think Georgina Campbell thinks this, you know, she was given
• 1:16:27
[SPEAKER_01]: What I can only imagine was sold to her is like a Clarice Starling type part.
• 1:16:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, and she's trying and it's just not there She's got nothing to work with and it's the tragedy.
• 1:16:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's a real bummer.
• 1:16:38
[SPEAKER_01]: So Cyclicular fucking sucks and for all the reasons I just said And then lastly, I don't have any pretty short on this because it's I think it's a pretty straightforward Take
• 1:16:51
[SPEAKER_01]: There's an important movie called the Dreadful.
• 1:16:54
[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of pretty good care.
• 1:16:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is the one that's inspired by the same story as on a Bob.
• 1:17:00
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's properly remake of on a Bob, but I don't know.
• 1:17:04
[SPEAKER_01]: For me, I believe that a read adaptation is a remake at least in category, even if not by intent.
• 1:17:14
[SPEAKER_01]: So if you want to call it remake OK, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't that's intention, but whatever.
• 1:17:19
[SPEAKER_01]: So, it takes place during the War of the Roses, Medieval England, and it's set mostly in an around a cabin where two women live.
• 1:17:29
[SPEAKER_01]: There's an older woman played by Marsha Gaye Harden.
• 1:17:32
[SPEAKER_01]: and her son is off at the war.
• 1:17:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Her son's wife, played by Sophie Turner from Game of Thrones, is there too, and she's taking care of the old lady, and they are, they've been without the man of the household for a long time now, and they're starting to wonder if he's ever going to come back.
• 1:17:52
[SPEAKER_01]: At this point, Marcia Gay Harden starts doing things like stealing in order to survive.
• 1:17:58
[SPEAKER_01]: They're out of a lot of money.
• 1:17:59
[SPEAKER_01]: They can't really work the land, so it's starting to steal.
• 1:18:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And then also, after, uh, uh, our husband's best friend comes back from the war.
• 1:18:10
[SPEAKER_01]: He actually, like, went AWOL.
• 1:18:13
  [SPEAKER_01]: Good take it anywhere.
• 1:18:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: War is hell.
• 1:18:15
[SPEAKER_01]: He's led by Kid Harrington also from Game of Thrones And he's doing his best Tom Hardy, which is not a great Tom Hardy But he's like real gruff I'm gonna talk like this It makes him feel like I've got something going on Thoughts But he's just like yeah, you're I saw him die
• 1:18:38
  [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, terrible.
• 1:18:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I saw him die was terrible, and I'm sorry.
• 1:18:40
  [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, he's dead.
• 1:18:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So they feel like there's no hope and Marsha Gahar and Escalates from Theevery to Murder.
• 1:18:48
[SPEAKER_01]: She's starting to kill people who like wash up on shore and like steal their boots and sell their boots or like a...
• 1:18:55
[SPEAKER_01]: a priest stats by their cabin and he has just come back from the war and he's got like some trinkets he's trying to sell and she's like oh is anyone else in your home yet?
• 1:19:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh no, not just you.
• 1:19:05
[SPEAKER_01]: I hope no one kills me and she's like stab and I was like oh no and so if we turners like I would like to be religious and I don't care about it this at all really I'd rather not be involved and Marcia Gay Harden who is amazing in this movie.
• 1:19:26
[SPEAKER_01]: a fantastically wicked character who is incredibly emotionally manipulative of Sophie Turner.
• 1:19:31
[SPEAKER_01]: She hasn't wanted her to have her own life.
• 1:19:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Every time she threatens to do things like, well listen, my husband's dead.
• 1:19:36
  [SPEAKER_01]: I could remarry.
• 1:19:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I really like the guy he, you know, his best friend.
• 1:19:41
  [SPEAKER_01]: He's interested in me.
• 1:19:42
[SPEAKER_01]: What else have we got to do?
• 1:19:44
  [SPEAKER_01]: And where's he going?
• 1:19:45
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, but you can't leave me.
• 1:19:47
  [SPEAKER_01]: I'm helpless.
• 1:19:48
[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, the counterpoint is
• 1:19:51
[SPEAKER_01]: You're murdering people just fine on your own.
• 1:19:55
[SPEAKER_01]: But she's super emotional when they believe she's really fucking terrible.
• 1:19:57
[SPEAKER_04]: And also when does the demon come?
• 1:19:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, by the way, in the woods, Sophie Turner keeps seeing this black knight on a white horse.
• 1:20:07
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, the heading people randomly, and she doesn't know what's up.
• 1:20:10
[SPEAKER_01]: And that will all be important later.
• 1:20:16
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a story about, in this filmmaker's eyes, this is a feminist tale.
• 1:20:23
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a story about a young woman who is trapped, has no hope for herself and doesn't know hope for independence of any kind.
• 1:20:30
[SPEAKER_01]: She's either trapped with this woman who does the moral things, and she doesn't want to do them, or she can remarry.
• 1:20:36
[SPEAKER_01]: okay those are her two options really and that's what I don't like that well this is what's going on and so she she views the possibility of escaping Marcia Gay Harden as I would have to Mary Kid Harrington and he's kind of honky so okay maybe I'll let my lust guide me in the direction which would be a sin but she's kind of wrestling with that she's given no good options at this point and then
• 1:21:04
[SPEAKER_01]: So the movie ends with some nebulousness, but these ultimately feels like a morality tale.
• 1:21:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is certain, this is certain.
• 1:21:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, a morality tale.
• 1:21:16
  [SPEAKER_04]: I really want to watch O'Neighbob.
• 1:21:19
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:21:20
  [SPEAKER_04]: Connecto Shendo made O'Neighbob in 63, I believe?
• 1:21:23
  [SPEAKER_04]: It's 63.
• 1:21:25
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
• 1:21:25
[SPEAKER_04]: And it took place in that one, took place in Fudal, Japan.
• 1:21:28
[SPEAKER_04]: It was about a mother and a daughter living out in this shack.
• 1:21:32
[SPEAKER_04]: In the middle of the gigantic field of grass.
• 1:21:34
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like almost this other world they place.
• 1:21:36
  [SPEAKER_04]: Can't really exist.
• 1:21:37
[SPEAKER_04]: But they had already developed a system of luring men to their deaths by like luring them down.
• 1:21:43
[SPEAKER_04]: They'd fall into a pit and then they'd be able to climb down
• 1:21:46
[SPEAKER_04]: take their armor and sell it like and these are all like runaway Samurai like they're fleeing a war yeah and the dreadful that starts more is like crowns of opportunity people like wash a short ship break and she just like oh you're still alive slip that out there they're all ready to cereal killers i'm a start of honey baba yeah
• 1:22:05
[SPEAKER_04]: And there is this roguish character who moves in, kind of finds out what they're doing, but he is also very young.
• 1:22:12
[SPEAKER_04]: Koof, he's very sexually begins having an affair with the younger woman and the older woman kind of resents it because it interrupts their serial killing business.
• 1:22:20
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, essentially.
• 1:22:20
[SPEAKER_04]: And that's when the demon enters and it's a man and a demon mask.
• 1:22:27
[SPEAKER_04]: And he only interacts with the older woman.
• 1:22:29
  [SPEAKER_04]: Um, it's, it's great.
• 1:22:31
[SPEAKER_04]: It feels like a, um, uh, Twilight Zone episode.
• 1:22:35
  [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
• 1:22:36
[SPEAKER_04]: But there isn't, and, and you could, uh, construe that movie as a feminist parable because it is about these woman who have taken, sort of, agency by, uh, sort of murdering the male remnants of a war.
• 1:22:49
[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, but it sounds like this one is a little bit more moralizing, you know, it's just a little breechier.
• 1:22:56
[SPEAKER_01]: The way you're describing it feels a little pretty good.
• 1:22:58
[SPEAKER_01]: breechier is probably overstating it, but it definitely is a clear sense of right and wrong and Sophie Turner's character is not, uh, uh, so corrupted that there's no turning back for her.
• 1:23:10
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:23:11
  [SPEAKER_01]: So there's a chance.
• 1:23:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: I think, I, I, here's the thing with this movie.
• 1:23:17
[SPEAKER_01]: This movie is just kind of okay.
• 1:23:19
[SPEAKER_01]: It's got a good sense of atmosphere.
• 1:23:23
[SPEAKER_01]: The story is, is, is of interest.
• 1:23:27
[SPEAKER_01]: It never really hits super hard.
• 1:23:30
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the real problem with this movie though is the cast is incredibly uneven.
• 1:23:36
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:23:36
  [SPEAKER_01]: Marceigh Gay Harden is,
• 1:23:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Awesome, like real, I don't know if she's always good, but she's she's got a juicy She's lady McBats.
• 1:23:45
[SPEAKER_01]: She's like juicy in it.
• 1:23:47
  [SPEAKER_00]: Is it?
• 1:23:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, like like she doesn't just like grab a knife Her fingers curl around it like her hand is looking.
• 1:23:53
[SPEAKER_01]: It's lips like she's just she's just Just oh, she's having a great time.
• 1:23:58
[SPEAKER_01]: She's wonderful Sophie Turner has to play browbeaten
• 1:24:03
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's okay at it.
• 1:24:04
[SPEAKER_01]: She's, you can see her interconflict.
• 1:24:08
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like she should be playing it out the bit more to match Marcia Gay Harden, but she's not.
• 1:24:12
[SPEAKER_01]: And then kid Harrington, I don't dislike kid Harrington, but he's trying something and it's not working.
• 1:24:19
[SPEAKER_01]: He's trying for like what if, instead of being a handsome rake.
• 1:24:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I was a character actor and it's like you're not playing a character you're playing a character actor It's how it feels like he feels it feels like he's trying to say what the Tom Hardy do Oh, that's that's not great.
• 1:24:37
[SPEAKER_04]: A lot of his hunky leading men do have like character chops They're two handsome and so they kept on putting them in leading actor roles and it's only and it's only when that dies down That they get those other opportunities Colin Farrell's prime example
• 1:24:54
[SPEAKER_04]: Person and ungrown and now, but that was that was trying for a while.
• 1:24:58
[SPEAKER_01]: That was the that was the escalation of his career.
• 1:24:59
  [SPEAKER_01]: Great It's not kid-herring can stay.
• 1:25:04
[SPEAKER_01]: He's good in stuff, but his his range is pretty limited and this isn't in that center A lot of acres of limited ranks.
• 1:25:10
[SPEAKER_01]: That's not a crime if you know what you're good at and what you're not good at and if you stay in that zone You can be fine John Wayne had extremely limited range
• 1:25:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, he tried to play Genghis Khan.
• 1:25:23
[SPEAKER_04]: He played John Wayne in most of his movies.
• 1:25:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's Sometimes he was a slightly more likable John Wayne.
• 1:25:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes he was more of an asshole John Wayne But he was pretty much always John Wayne and that's fine because most movies
• 1:25:38
[SPEAKER_01]: have a part that you could probably fit a John Wayne type into.
• 1:25:42
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like you could just be like, okay, we need a hard ass.
• 1:25:45
  [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, cool.
• 1:25:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Does he have a heart of gold?
• 1:25:47
[SPEAKER_01]: No, fine, I can do that.
• 1:25:48
[SPEAKER_01]: But if he did, I could do that too.
• 1:25:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Fine, that's what you do.
• 1:25:52
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's your stick.
• 1:25:53
[SPEAKER_01]: The one time he really defied it and it worked was the quiet man.
• 1:25:56
  [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's his best film.
• 1:25:59
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's a very nice thing.
• 1:26:00
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's wonderful in that movie.
• 1:26:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: But,
• 1:26:03
[SPEAKER_01]: My point is, is that not having a huge range, it's not a crime, it's an actor, it just means you have to sort of lean into your strengths.
• 1:26:10
[SPEAKER_01]: This is not his strength.
• 1:26:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And so he's not great.
• 1:26:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Sophie Turner is fine, Marsha Gay Harden is amazing.
• 1:26:17
[SPEAKER_01]: So anytime she's on screen with the two of them, it feels like she's acting circles around them.
• 1:26:23
[SPEAKER_01]: And every time she's not on screen, you're wondering where Poochy is.
• 1:26:27
  [SPEAKER_01]: You're just like, we're pushing, we're pushing.
• 1:26:29
  [SPEAKER_01]: Harden, we're my binoculars.
• 1:26:34
  [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, it's a deep cut there.
• 1:26:36
[SPEAKER_01]: That's from our first episodes of The Hetzel 2 series.
• 1:26:38
  [SPEAKER_04]: That hot springs hotel.
• 1:26:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo, who
• 1:27:03
  [SPEAKER_01]: Where's Sidney?
• 1:27:04
  [SPEAKER_04]: Where's Sidney?
• 1:27:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this would be, Sidney should be here by now.
• 1:27:07
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm surprised there wasn't a scene where they explained what a great... ...Boreest as she was.
• 1:27:13
  [SPEAKER_04]: At her coffin shop.
• 1:27:14
  [SPEAKER_04]: It's the best.
• 1:27:15
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, oh, nobody mixes a drink like you.
• 1:27:18
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, you know what would have taken the curse off of it a little bit?
• 1:27:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Is if we found out Scream 7 was happening at the same time as Scream 6.
• 1:27:24
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's why she's got a show up.
• 1:27:25
[SPEAKER_01]: There was another killer going on right here.
• 1:27:27
  [SPEAKER_01]: She was fucking busy.
• 1:27:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Really would have made, if that was really fun.
• 1:27:32
[SPEAKER_04]: Do you about scream sex, you would have been fine?
• 1:27:33
[SPEAKER_04]: Wasn't she in scream sex?
• 1:27:34
[SPEAKER_04]: Like I once seen her.
• 1:27:35
[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, you're thinking of that the beginning of scream five.
• 1:27:41
  [SPEAKER_01]: She's called.
• 1:27:42
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:27:42
[SPEAKER_01]: That's how you should know.
• 1:27:44
[SPEAKER_01]: And then she shows up later.
• 1:27:45
  [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
• 1:27:46
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
• 1:27:47
[SPEAKER_01]: I mentally transpose that scene into sex as well.
• 1:27:49
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, did she all look the tiniest camera?
• 1:27:52
  [SPEAKER_01]: No, she did.
• 1:27:54
  [UNKNOWN]: Okay.
• 1:27:54
  [SPEAKER_01]: I thought so too.
• 1:27:55
[SPEAKER_01]: It would have made more sense to do that, but whatever it didn't happen.
• 1:27:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Sound to review some movies on the critically acclaimed scale.
• 1:28:00
[SPEAKER_01]: We review our movies on a scale of C-minus to C-plus.
• 1:28:04
[SPEAKER_01]: C-minus is low as it goes.
• 1:28:05
[SPEAKER_01]: These are movies that we think are below average.
• 1:28:08
[SPEAKER_01]: We generally don't recommend them.
• 1:28:10
  [SPEAKER_01]: A C is an average movie.
• 1:28:11
  [SPEAKER_01]: Some good, some bad.
• 1:28:12
[SPEAKER_01]: And a C-plus is an above average movie.
• 1:28:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Those are movies that we genuinely recommend, whether we really like them or think they're super great.
• 1:28:18
[SPEAKER_01]: This is where if we have like...
• 1:28:20
[SPEAKER_01]: a long conversation about the goods and bad points of a movie, we can clarify exactly where we stand on it.
• 1:28:26
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so on that note, the dreadful, I am giving it the lowest of seas.
• 1:28:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, Martia Gay Harden saves it from being bad.
• 1:28:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank God, it's not terrible, but it's not terrible because Martia Gay Harden kills it.
• 1:28:43
  [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
• 1:28:44
[SPEAKER_01]: uh... cycle killer c-minus one of the worst movies are seen in a really long time that's so just in general and i look out i don't just look at the at your goals i try to watch everything is really
• 1:28:55
  [SPEAKER_01]: And then the bluff.
• 1:28:57
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I'm going to give a see because it is it's a watchable film.
• 1:29:02
[SPEAKER_04]: The action is exciting It's just really really bland That there is there's like like I said before it's like halfway to everything It's not but it's enough halves to equal something at least entertainally Just not dead.
• 1:29:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm giving it a see as well.
• 1:29:20
  [SPEAKER_01]: There's a term I use and I think I've actually
• 1:29:22
[SPEAKER_01]: described another movie like this recently by Canberra which one.
• 1:29:25
[SPEAKER_01]: This is German use for what I call the four star three star movie where it's they're because of the nature of the film and the premise and whatever the most movie could ever be is three stars but it's as good as that movie could be.
• 1:29:36
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:29:37
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a two and a half star three star movie.
• 1:29:39
[SPEAKER_01]: The most it could be is three stars.
• 1:29:41
[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't quite get through but it's it's pretty close It's pretty close and if you like Pyramid movies and you haven't seen a good one in a while This will scratch at it.
• 1:29:49
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's it's just not amazing pretty average.
• 1:29:51
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah, yeah And then lastly screen 7 here's haven't seen minus I did not like this movie.
• 1:29:58
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I don't like the way this series have been going and this is just
• 1:30:01
[SPEAKER_04]: Keeps on going in bad directions man.
• 1:30:04
[SPEAKER_04]: That's not to say it's bad filmmaking or bad characterization or bad acting It's just bad ideas.
• 1:30:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I agree the idea is behind this one or what really sink it I'm gonna give it a sea because first off I think I'm just higher on this franchise in general the new is we've established I like the last couple of screen movies but
• 1:30:24
[SPEAKER_01]: as much as it's frustrating that it isn't a bad thing in the ending is crap, that's bad ending.
• 1:30:30
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just not, on a technical level, it's not a bad slasher.
• 1:30:33
[SPEAKER_01]: If you go in expecting a great screen, move it, you're gonna be really disappointed.
• 1:30:37
[SPEAKER_01]: If you go in expecting, oh, it's a pretty good slasher.
• 1:30:39
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like the ending kind of sucks, but whatever, all the kills are really cool.
• 1:30:45
[SPEAKER_01]: That stuff works, and I can't pretend that's not true.
• 1:30:49
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to give it a see.
• 1:30:50
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a very, very shrugable sea, but it is a sea.
• 1:30:55
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's not a total wash as a screen movie, but by God, I hope if they make another one, it's better than this.
• 1:31:03
[SPEAKER_01]: And that is it for Critically Client.
• 1:31:05
  [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for listening.
• 1:31:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for joining us.
• 1:31:07
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll be back next time.
• 1:31:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Was there a review of Hoppers?
• 1:31:20
[SPEAKER_04]: That doesn't make any sense.
• 1:31:21
[SPEAKER_04]: No, that doesn't track it all.
• 1:31:22
[SPEAKER_04]: It's about a beaver that gets avatard.
• 1:31:25
  [SPEAKER_04]: That beaver robot.
• 1:31:27
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that damn it's art.
• 1:31:29
  [SPEAKER_04]: It's also the bride.
• 1:31:30
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the monster phone for Maggie Gillin' all.
• 1:31:33
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, he's really looking forward to that.
• 1:31:34
  [SPEAKER_01]: She's a really good director.
• 1:31:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And the trailer looks fun.
• 1:31:36
  [SPEAKER_01]: I hope it's good.
• 1:31:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: We'll find out if it's good.
• 1:31:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll have to tell you if it sucks.
• 1:31:40
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm Jesse Buckley as well.
• 1:31:42
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
• 1:31:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Boy, she had a winning streak.
