- 1:13Speaker 1: am sharing a really special story with you, prompted by
- 1:18Speaker 1: the sad news that this year in Connecticut, overnight summer
- 1:24Speaker 1: camps will not be permitted to open. Now I totally
- 1:29Speaker 1: understand the safety reasoning behind it, I get it, but
- 1:34Speaker 1: still as someone that went to summer camp for fifteen
- 1:38Speaker 1: total years as a camper and a counselor man that
- 1:43Speaker 1: was a hard pill to swallow. As always, if you
- 1:46Speaker 1: like what you're listening here, please make sure to reach
- 1:49Speaker 1: out over Instagram, over Twitter, over Facebook, at Emily a Body,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and at Hurdle Podcast. Now. I have always been a
- 1:59Speaker 1: visual sort of person, and perhaps that's why I love
- 2:03Speaker 1: writing and reading so much. Back in college, I was
- 2:06Speaker 1: the kind of student who just had to rewrite literally
- 2:09Speaker 1: absolutely everything in our college textbooks onto small, lined, indexed
- 2:13Speaker 1: parts prior to an exam in order to truly learn
- 2:17Speaker 1: the material. Now these days, I have a vision board
- 2:20Speaker 1: at my desk and a zillion post its around the
- 2:22Speaker 1: apartment filled with everything from positive affirmations and reminders to
- 2:26Speaker 1: Italian phrases as my never ending quest to learn a
- 2:30Speaker 1: third language continues, which is why, in true Emily fashion,
- 2:36Speaker 1: I purchased a pair of genes that were two sizes
- 2:39Speaker 1: too small in June two thousand and eight. At the time,
- 2:43Speaker 1: I was down about thirty five pounds from where I
- 2:46Speaker 1: started my weight loss journey in April two thousand and seven.
- 2:50Speaker 1: For more on that, you can click on over to
- 2:52Speaker 1: episode one of the podcast. This particular denim purchase happened
- 2:57Speaker 1: on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at the Gap Outlet in Clinton, Connecticut,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and at the time I was determined, so determined to
- 3:05Speaker 1: continue losing weight in the weeks and months to come.
- 3:08Speaker 1: As I settled into my role as programming director at
- 3:11Speaker 1: Camp Laurelwood in Overnight Camp, about fifteen minutes down the road.
- 3:17Speaker 1: This would be my fifteenth summer of Sophie shorts and
- 3:21Speaker 1: no air conditioning and letter writing. My stint at camp
- 3:25Speaker 1: was one of my longest love affairs to date, starting
- 3:27Speaker 1: when my parents shipped me off at six years old
- 3:30Speaker 1: for an entire month away from home in nineteen ninety five. Now,
- 3:34Speaker 1: I don't remember all that much from growing up, but
- 3:37Speaker 1: I can sing you the song I learned at age
- 3:40Speaker 1: seven about my bunkmate Alana's home information including phone number
- 3:44Speaker 1: and address should we have ever gotten lost. From that
- 3:48Speaker 1: first summer, I was hooked. Every year I would stay
- 3:53Speaker 1: longer and eventually I would become a counselor, and this
- 3:56Speaker 1: particular year in two thousand and eight, I was head staff.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I knew that the summer of two thousand and eight
- 4:05Speaker 1: it would have obstacles and not just professional ones coming
- 4:08Speaker 1: up with fun activities to occupy campers from ages six
- 4:12Speaker 1: to fifteen, but also personal ones, the I'm going to
- 4:17Speaker 1: keep losing weight ones. Aside from the irresistible goodness of
- 4:22Speaker 1: regular campfire s'mores, abundant ice cream nights, and limited mess
- 4:26Speaker 1: hall options, I wouldn't have regular access to a gym
- 4:29Speaker 1: where I could mindlessly spend forty five minutes watching reality
- 4:33Speaker 1: TV on an elliptical. And so this brings us back
- 4:36Speaker 1: the investment I made for myself, a forty five dollar
- 4:41Speaker 1: investment to be exact. Once I pulled up to four
- 4:45Speaker 1: sixty three Summer Hill Road, unpacked my box, fan, arranged
- 4:49Speaker 1: my toiletries on the top shelf of my lopsided cubby,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and applied my summer scent of Kirkland branded bug spray.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I went to the closet and got a hangar complete
- 4:59Speaker 1: with two clips. I pulled the jeans out of their
- 5:03Speaker 1: dark blue bag and hung them up on the backside
- 5:07Speaker 1: of my bathroom door.
- 5:09Speaker 2: I stopped.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I stared light blue wash wipe like I remember it
- 5:15Speaker 1: clear as day, something I never would have dared put
- 5:20Speaker 1: on my quote unquote already big thighs before hanging there
- 5:26Speaker 1: for the next seven weeks, those genes would serve as
- 5:29Speaker 1: a reminder of my big, lofty goals. I told myself,
- 5:33Speaker 1: a reminder of how far I had already come and
- 5:36Speaker 1: where I was going, And that moment I breathed in
- 5:39Speaker 1: that feeling of excitement and possibility. I was continually working
- 5:44Speaker 1: on letting go the Emily of yesteryear, that Emily who
- 5:47Speaker 1: felt ashamed of her body, uncomfortable in some social situations,
- 5:53Speaker 1: scared of the camera, afraid of intimacy. This Emily, though,
- 6:00Speaker 1: standing in that wooden cabin, she was ready for change,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and boy did a lot change that summer. I started
- 6:09Speaker 1: to really come into my own as a woman. With
- 6:12Speaker 1: the weight loss came a necessary shift in my inner dialogue.
- 6:16Speaker 1: And while I recognized that some individuals they can find
- 6:19Speaker 1: happiness at a bigger size, I.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Just was not one of them.
- 6:23Speaker 1: As the pounds continued to come off, I had noticeably
- 6:27Speaker 1: more energy and a better attitude. I became more outgoing,
- 6:31Speaker 1: and I also became a runner.
- 6:36Speaker 2: You know, some days still it's weird to say.
- 6:37Speaker 1: That sentence out loud. I'm a runner, but facts are facts.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And during the summer of two thousand and eight, I
- 6:45Speaker 1: ran every single day. You can hear me talk about
- 6:49Speaker 1: that some more in the How to Start and Stay
- 6:52Speaker 1: Running episode that I'll include in the show notes. And
- 6:55Speaker 1: today I'm a three twenty eighth eight marathoner, but back
- 6:59Speaker 1: then I was a fourteen minute half miler. It didn't
- 7:04Speaker 1: matter though the pace, you know. At the time, I
- 7:07Speaker 1: made a commitment to myself just to give it a try.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I made a commitment to myself to move my body
- 7:14Speaker 1: every single day, to sweat every single day. Every single day,
- 7:21Speaker 1: I'd walk in and see those light washed jeans hanging
- 7:24Speaker 1: up on the door next to my full body mirror,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and I'd remember that commitment. I'd change into a Hanes
- 7:31Speaker 1: V neck T shirt and a pair of black caught
- 7:34Speaker 1: in thick waistband leggings from Target and hit the road
- 7:38Speaker 1: every single day. Now, some things, of course, they did
- 7:43Speaker 1: remain the same though. My friendship, some of which I'd
- 7:46Speaker 1: had since age six at Laureland, those friends, they became
- 7:50Speaker 1: my family. At camp, your family does everything together, you
- 7:54Speaker 1: giggle over first kisses. Mine was memorably behind canteen, naturally
- 7:59Speaker 1: with a boy named Zach Lewis. About six people stood
- 8:03Speaker 1: around us in a circle and counted to five, so
- 8:05Speaker 1: that it really quote unquote happened in a camp. You
- 8:09Speaker 1: get nervous about first dances, and you brave swim lessons
- 8:12Speaker 1: in a speedo swimsuit and the boating lake, and you
- 8:15Speaker 1: bond over ty Die and you argue over the best
- 8:18Speaker 1: bug juice flavors. That summer for me was one of
- 8:22Speaker 1: the most special of my life, as I not only
- 8:25Speaker 1: got to be in one of my favorite places with
- 8:28Speaker 1: my favorite people, but I also came to understand the
- 8:31Speaker 1: importance of prioritizing my health and while being while still
- 8:34Speaker 1: showing up doing my job and doing it well. So
- 8:39Speaker 1: I'll bring us full circle. I'll never forget the final
- 8:44Speaker 1: night of that summer, I took a shower after free swim,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and I walked into the center of my cabin and
- 8:49Speaker 1: turned around, and there they were, in the same place
- 8:53Speaker 1: I put them about sixty days before. I grabbed the
- 8:57Speaker 1: soft denim down from the hangar with so much confidence
- 9:00Speaker 1: in one slightly sunburnt leg at a time, I slipped
- 9:04Speaker 1: into my never before Warren jeans and I buttoned them
- 9:08Speaker 1: with these they fit. I felt proud, not because of
- 9:14Speaker 1: anything that the scale said, but because that summer I
- 9:18Speaker 1: worked really hard that summer. I invested in way more
- 9:24Speaker 1: than just a forty five dollars parachene. I invested in
- 9:28Speaker 1: my well being. I invested in myself. And so for
- 9:34Speaker 1: this week, my prompt that I leave you with, how
- 9:38Speaker 1: have you invested in yourself lately? Highlights of the week?
- 9:44Speaker 1: All right, guys, run for a good cause. Adidas is
- 9:47Speaker 1: doing a pretty cool thing called their Hometown Hero Challenge.
- 9:51Speaker 1: For every hour of tracked activity and either their Adidas
- 9:54Speaker 1: Running or Adidas Training app between May twenty ninth to
- 9:58Speaker 1: June seventh, they will donate one dollar to the COVID
- 10:01Speaker 1: nineteen Solitary Response Fund for the World Health Organization, with
- 10:06Speaker 1: the goal of reaching one million hours. You can sign
- 10:10Speaker 1: up in advance by clicking over to the show notes,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and again, all of this will be in there.
- 10:17Speaker 2: My other pig.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Everybody's talking about this, but ESPN's ten part documentary series
- 10:21Speaker 1: The Last Dance, which chronicled Michael Jordan and the nineteen
- 10:24Speaker 1: ninety seven to ninety eight Chicago Bulls, is pretty excellent.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Now.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Admittedly, I'm not on the finale episode just yet, so
- 10:31Speaker 1: don't spoil it for me, but I am.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Totally digging it. You've got to check it out.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Also worth highlighting the Call Her Daddy podcast drama is
- 10:41Speaker 1: so juicy. Basically, Call Her Daddy is a show with
- 10:45Speaker 1: a wild following where two women in their mid twenties
- 10:48Speaker 1: discuss their lives and sexual experiences, something that I could
- 10:51Speaker 1: never share on audio ever.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Personally, the drama right now is that they're in a
- 10:56Speaker 2: huge feud.
- 10:57Speaker 1: With both each other and they're broadcaster bars sports, and
- 11:01Speaker 1: again it is just so interesting. So in the show notes,
- 11:05Speaker 1: I've shared the New York Times article about it, and
- 11:07Speaker 1: of course a really interesting episode from Barstool's founder and
- 11:11Speaker 1: president Dave Portnoy. Also of note, this week, I finally
- 11:15Speaker 1: decided to give my living room a necessary upgrade. I
- 11:18Speaker 1: ditched my twenty ten Apple TV in favor of an
- 11:24Speaker 1: Apple TV four K.
- 11:26Speaker 2: This thing is bananas.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Not only is the picture quality absolutely so much better
- 11:32Speaker 1: than before, but now I've got a whole app store.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I finally got that cool screensaver with all the different
- 11:38Speaker 1: cool cities.
- 11:38Speaker 2: To look at all the time.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And I just am telling myself and I'm sharing with
- 11:43Speaker 1: you that you are worthy of this investment. With all
- 11:47Speaker 1: of the staying at home and streaming that we're doing.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I highly recommend and last, but not least, a recommendation
- 11:53Speaker 1: for this week. I've been getting so many messages over
- 11:56Speaker 1: on social media asking me about wearing a mask and running,
- 11:58Speaker 1: and I have been leaning into either a bandana tied
- 12:02Speaker 1: around my face or some sort of a buff. Eddie
- 12:05Speaker 1: Bauer sent over some of what they call I'm gonna butcher.
- 12:08Speaker 1: How you say this word multi clovas, multi clavas.
- 12:12Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 12:13Speaker 1: They're absolutely perfect. It's a buff. They've got really cute styles.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I ran in one this morning. It doesn't budge, it's
- 12:19Speaker 1: super breatheable, and it's so much better than wearing any
- 12:23Speaker 1: other mask that I've tried so far.
- 12:25Speaker 2: And that's it for now this week.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I'm leaving you with a piece of wisdom that I
- 12:29Speaker 1: look at every day sitting in.
- 12:31Speaker 2: My living room.
- 12:32Speaker 1: On a small signboard, it says, remember when you wanted
- 12:37Speaker 1: what you have right now. Happy Friday hurdlers, Another hurdle conquered.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Catch you guys next time.
