- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo, Episode 12! Luna: Hey Lucas, I'm ready for more Swahili today. Lucas: Awesome. So far we've learned time-of-day greetings, 'Jambo', 'Habari yako?', and 'Nzuri, asante.' Remember those? Luna: Yeah, 'Habari yako?' means 'How are you?' and you say 'Nzuri, asante.' — 'Fine, thanks.' Lucas: Exactly. Today we're going to learn an even more casual way to ask 'How are you?' in Swahili. Luna: Oh, casual — I like casual. What is it? Lucas: It's 'Habari gani?' Say it with me: Habari gani? Luna: Habari gani? Lucas: Nice. 'Habari' means news or how things are, and 'gani' means 'what kind' or 'how' — so literally 'What's the news?' Luna: Oh, like 'What's up?' in English. Lucas: Exactly. And the reply is the same as before: 'Nzuri, asante.' — 'Fine, thanks.' Luna: So if someone asks 'Habari gani?', I just say 'Nzuri, asante.' Lucas: Yes. Let's practice that exchange. I'll ask: Habari gani? Luna: Nzuri, asante. Lucas: Perfect. Now you ask me. Luna: Habari gani? Lucas: Nzuri, asante. See? Easy. Luna: So 'Habari gani?' is even more casual than 'Habari yako?' Lucas: Right. 'Habari yako?' is also common, but 'Habari gani?' is super relaxed, like between friends. Luna: Got it. Let me try a little role-play. Imagine I'm meeting a friend. Lucas: Okay. I'll be your friend. You walk up to me. Luna: Habari gani? Lucas: Nzuri, asante. And you? Luna: Oh, how do I say 'fine thanks' back? Just 'Nzuri, asante' again? Lucas: Yes. Or you can say 'Nzuri, asante. Na wewe?' which means 'Fine, thanks. And you?' Luna: Okay. So if you ask me, I'll say 'Nzuri, asante. Na wewe?' Lucas: Exactly. Let's do that. Habari gani? Luna: Nzuri, asante. Na wewe? Lucas: Nzuri, asante. You're a natural. Luna: Aww, thanks. So 'Habari gani?' and 'Nzuri, asante.' — that's the casual check-in. Lucas: Yes. And remember, you can always use 'Habari yako?' if you want, but 'Habari gani?' is more common among friends. Luna: Got it. Let's do a quick recap quiz. I'll ask you the phrases, you tell me the meaning. Lucas: Okay, go for it. Luna: Habari gani? Lucas: Casual 'How are you?' or 'What's up?' Luna: Nzuri, asante. Lucas: 'Fine, thanks.' Luna: Yes! And 'Na wewe?' means 'And you?' Lucas: Exactly. You've got it down. Luna: I feel so ready for a real conversation now. Lucas: You are! And remember, Fexingo is here with you every step of the way. Luna: Yeah, thanks Fexingo! And thanks Lucas. This was fun. Lucas: Glad you enjoyed it. Practice 'Habari gani?' and 'Nzuri, asante.' with friends this week. Luna: I will. Until next time — tutaonana! Lucas: Tutaonana! Bye bye.
