- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:28What questions can I ask for you folks?
- 0:30Shoot, I'll give you everything I have.
- 0:32You take and do it as you may. Yes, Sir, for four.
- 0:38On one exchanges, do you do a vocal cue or do you?
- 0:41Prefer more? Touches out, so we do a couple
- 0:47different type of exchanges. One of them I'll do early on
- 0:52because I'm just trying to teach the skill pattern and it's just
- 0:56an easy exchange and that is a verbal when we're going live,
- 1:00you see the mark, you're going to put your hand up when you're
- 1:02ready and it's all on. It's you got to understand the
- 1:05concept of it. There are a lot of people who
- 1:08are screaming a lot of things at me time.
- 1:10So I'm trying to eliminate all the noise.
- 1:13I want us focusing on our lane and what we do because if you
- 1:16hearing stick, stick, stick, it's a lot of people doing that.
- 1:20So we try to minimize the noise and so we do have a practice cue
- 1:25that we use when we're doing more of the lighter exercises.
- 1:29But when we're going live it's it's quiet.
- 1:30Yes Sir, in the gauntlet between conference.
- 1:32And regionals. And NCAA.
- 1:38Obviously the weather is different that you encounter
- 1:43because obviously you go into conference with your exchange
- 1:46points. Did you have any weather
- 1:49conditions or any kind of things that you had to adjust through
- 1:52that sequence or meet to meet? Well, it's a good question,
- 1:58Coach, because I'll give you an example.
- 2:02So conference last year, we were at Texas and it was windy,
- 2:10especially at 3:00 and 4:00, so you can bring them in.
- 2:13We went to Kentucky in the four by one.
- 2:18It was raining that morning. Track was a little slick, but we
- 2:22opted just to stay pen relays. It is what it is.
- 2:27I think we brought a man tight because we want to make sure we
- 2:29got it around. And then for nationals this
- 2:33year, we just stuck with what we had.
- 2:36It was very hot out in Oregon, so at some point you just got to
- 2:41trust the marks. If it's raining hard, we even
- 2:43have another way. We'll run relays if we if, if
- 2:46it's raining really hard and I got to go to no tape marks, no
- 2:49nothing. I've got a system that will run
- 2:51that too. So 8 to 12 hill toe steps is
- 2:59what you normally. That's general.
- 3:04I will tell you, I'll put whatever you need to do.
- 3:06We get up to you have sometimes we'll go 28 or 26 to 30 and it
- 3:13depends on how you do it and. Then you just mentioned you used
- 3:16to take. I've been to Pepsi a couple
- 3:18times. You.
- 3:19Weren't seeing people you've been at where, sorry.
- 3:22We've been to oh mentioned they used tape.
- 3:24Do you still use tape or do you use those long strips?
- 3:27That I've seen called. It depends with the I target or
- 3:31whatever I have the the long strips but we also use tape so
- 3:35it just depends. I would rather use the long
- 3:37strips because of one it's easier for them to put down and
- 3:40not struggling with the tape. But it's whichever 1 you want to
- 3:44use. I make mine OK.
- 3:46What do you think? Of mine because I've tried to
- 3:49look online. I'm like, I don't right the
- 3:52kitten office playing tape, just two sided tape and just keep
- 3:54folding until you get it to the consistency you need.
- 3:56Yeah. Oh, OK.
- 3:56For that 150 simulation, I'm assuming I'll get you stopped at
- 3:58150 from 2nd to 4th. But from first.
- 4:01To second, are you still hanging up the same 4 by 4 exchanges?
- 4:06On or you don't have it after. So the 150 is we're just working
- 4:22the the back exchanges. So we'll start the 1:50 they run
- 4:26in the person taking the run 50 meters carry 50 and then they
- 4:31walk back across and do it again.
- 4:32Yeah, and. You.
- 4:34Can do that with 100 meters, 50 meters, whatever you desire.
- 4:37It's I build them into my workouts.
- 4:40Yes, Sir, the same. You do.
- 4:43This so I. Got to ask and this is great.
- 4:47For high school coach, how often do you run your.
- 4:54Relays. How often?
- 4:55Do you? Give them a break and say it's
- 4:57not as. Important.
- 4:59How often do I run the relays? I run them every weekend if I
- 5:03can and I'll run a bunch of them because it, what I'm trying to
- 5:06find out is who's going to pay attention and where we need to
- 5:12set up those marks because any coach in here, no, you might
- 5:16think you have your 4:00 to 5:00, somebody gets sick, this
- 5:21and this and that. So I try to run as many as I can
- 5:24every time I can for that particular reason.
- 5:28And I also think I might practice one way and run in a
- 5:32different way just so I've got the reps at me time, but I need
- 5:37to see a different execution. I mean, I've got the reps at
- 5:39practice, but I want to see a different execution at me time
- 5:43because I don't ever want to be in a situation I know I've run
- 5:4639 seconds with a 400 hurdler that could not break.
- 5:51If he ran 10/8. I would be I would eat a hat
- 5:53right now. But because we try and do a lot
- 5:57of different things and it was cold and Bowling Green, KY, we
- 6:00ran 3993 with that gentleman and another hurdler.
- 6:05But it was all about I needed to see what my first and third were
- 6:08going to do. So I put my two of my better
- 6:11guys and 1:00 and 3:00 and I had my long hurdles on the
- 6:13straightaway just to see what they can do they.
- 6:16Practice. It everybody practices the relay
- 6:19and. Your outgoing runners, are they
- 6:21reaching? Straight.
- 6:23Back out to the side out to the side so I again me, I'm trying
- 6:27to simplify all of this and so I teach I want to reach out and
- 6:32catch the baton and come back A lot of times you see when people
- 6:36do this motion, they're getting here and they're bending and
- 6:40they're reaching for it. I don't want you reaching.
- 6:43I want you to just catch the baton and go.
- 6:49Yes, Sir, that's. 38. O5.
- 6:51Quartet last year. How many are you returning?
- 6:5433 but everybody has opportunity to run on one that can run 38 or
- 7:0037. Yeah, there's no guarantees.
- 7:03Everybody has to earn their spot.
- 7:07With your. Second leg of your 4 by 4 as
- 7:11they're outgoing, how do you how do you keep them from I guess
- 7:17looking back to the receiver baton at a decent rate not
- 7:20stepping out of the their lane? Second leg of four by 4/4.
- 7:25How do I have a look back? Correct.
- 7:29Well, one, we work on actual position.
- 7:35Most people, again, that's why I say you got to practice this.
- 7:38You have people just stand up in the middle of the lane.
- 7:42Where's the incoming running going to go if you're in the
- 7:44middle of the lane? So we work on actually making
- 7:47sure you understand the spacing. So I have the outgoing runner on
- 7:52the outside and they have to stay on the outside until
- 7:55there's contact through the push.
- 7:56So again, I'm yelling, see the hand, push the hand and they're
- 7:59pushing the incoming runner. Push the person through the zone
- 8:02and they both should be able to run through that zone without
- 8:05any issues. The person shouldn't be cutting
- 8:07down on the incoming runner. It should be clean going out.
- 8:10That in and of itself is a lot of practice because again, you
- 8:17see a lot of people crash and burn trying to get to that zone
- 8:20because they don't pay attention.
- 8:23It's not that they can't do it, but they don't pay attention.
- 8:25They get excited and they just want to go the hands here, then
- 8:28it drops to here and they in the middle of the lane and they're
- 8:31turning around and doing all this stuff.
- 8:32You just got to stay focused on the task at hand, which is big
- 8:36target. You have to be able to measure
- 8:38the incoming person's speed and you got to mimic that going out.
- 8:43Just that simple. All quality questions.
- 8:51Anybody else? Go ahead.
- 8:56Which one? Oh, well, I thought I had some
- 9:02help with my stuff here, but all right, so I'll be able to show
- 9:17that. Any other questions I can answer
- 9:19about the relays? Yeah, I think there's a yes,
- 9:22Sir. Touched on it and I I see this
- 9:24it's not uncommon with coaches of all levels.
- 9:26By the way, you talked about relays are a practice, an
- 9:32acceleration practice or a math ski practice You also probably
- 9:35have or have had. Long jumpers.
- 9:38You mentioned heard there or? Something can.
- 9:40You talk us a little bit about the I've seen people do 4 by 1
- 9:43practice on Monday, acceleration practice on Tuesday.
- 9:46And and you know that's not. The right way, right?
- 9:51Can you talk a little bit about how, but how do you use relay
- 9:56practice as? A long jump.
- 9:57Practice as a strict practice, etcetera.
- 10:00Well. One, you try to go out and
- 10:01recruit kids who can actually do it.
- 10:04So I have two examples and specifically talking about
- 10:07jumpers, I had a young man couple years ago, Ventavia Sears
- 10:12in our conference championship. He ran 20.545, five long jump,
- 10:1725 plus feet, 52 plus feet, anchored our four by one in 45 O
- 10:213, but he could have easily run it out four by one.
- 10:25Our 4x4 this year actually had a high jumper on it that split 44
- 10:29eight. So it's about finding people who
- 10:33are available to be able to do it and also put them in
- 10:35situations. So one of the big things we had
- 10:37to work on this year because he was young man came in in
- 10:40January. He was a high jumper, was being
- 10:42able to work with our jumps coach and say hey, I need them
- 10:46for this amount of time to work on these things and he was a
- 10:49work in progress. But you can see it early.
- 10:52Same thing you can see with the old man Ventavia Sears.
- 10:54You knew very quickly he was a guy that needed to be on the run
- 10:57relay. He ran on our relay that ran
- 10:593860. They finished fourth in the
- 11:01NCAA's, but he also jumped 26 too.
- 11:04And that same me and he ran second leg on our 4x4.
- 11:09I believe so. But it's also a lot of
- 11:13communication between other coaches because, again, they do
- 11:16other events and it's how you work together to be able to do
- 11:18that. And then you also have to have
- 11:19the kid buy in to say, all right, I can do it.
- 11:23And I'm actually looking forward to it And out again for the
- 11:26young man here, this year's name is Corey.
- 11:29Corey also had the benefit of coming in and getting drugged
- 11:32through practice by Gabe, who was a guy that can run Force 8,
- 11:36all this other type of stuff. So he had the mentorship of
- 11:39having somebody who could do that with him.
- 11:40So again, it comes back to personnel.
- 11:45It's just personnel. Anybody else?
- 11:52All right, I'll give you this video here briefly.
- 11:57Anybody else? All right, Yes, Sir.
- 12:00Early in the. Season look like.
- 12:09In your practice for outdoors so depends on where we travel
- 12:17trying to think of what's what's a good week coach I give you a
- 12:20tight week 22 examples a tight week early season week you will
- 12:24go to Florida relay. So we're coming off of we'll do
- 12:28our home meet week off then we do Florida relay.
- 12:31So Mondays those guys that do a lot of acceleration work with
- 12:36Coach Dean. Coach Dean, coaches are short
- 12:38sprinters, so I send all the quarter miles to him except for
- 12:41the guys who are truly quarter miles that can move up.
- 12:44But even then they do a lot of that short end stuff as well.
- 12:48Tuesdays we're going to come out, we're going to start with
- 12:51some shorter work to develop to get ready for the four by one
- 12:54work. And so we'll actually go short
- 12:58work. Then we'll do 4 by 4 exchanges.
- 13:01Then we'll come back to the four by one and we'll do some longer
- 13:05work in 4 by 1 and then we'll fire it up and go fast.
- 13:08We'll take a recovery and then we'll come back and do some type
- 13:11of flat running. Wednesdays is either off day or
- 13:16a recovery. I mean some type of recovery
- 13:17day. Thursdays we're going to go
- 13:21fast. And then, well, I say that
- 13:25again, depends if we're going to Florida Relays it, it can, it's
- 13:29measurable. And then we'll run Friday and
- 13:32Saturday and we use those as real time workouts.
- 13:34And then we'll recover on Sunday and and Monday.
- 13:37If it's a tight week, like we're going from Mount SAC Relays to
- 13:42Pen Relays, well we're leaving on Wednesdays for both of those
- 13:46meets. So by the time we get back on
- 13:49Sunday, we really only have a Tuesday to get the work done.
- 13:53So that's pretty much it. And then we're traveling on
- 13:57Wednesdays and have a light shake out on Thursdays, and then
- 14:02we'll hit it on Friday and Saturday.
- 14:03Definitely we'll. Focus on relays.
- 14:07We focus on relays on Tuesdays and Tuesday one, because I want
- 14:11to have enough time to be able to get their legs back on the
- 14:14room because not only are we going to do relays, but we're
- 14:16going to run hard flat too. So we do quite a bit of volume
- 14:20on on Tuesdays with relays, but it's all leading to that point
- 14:26because that type of high intensity work with volume, it
- 14:31it gets scary at the end of the year.
- 14:33It does, but you got to do it. All right.
- 14:37Anybody else have any questions besides Coach Dean?
- 14:41I want to watch this video. OK, All right, This is our
- 14:47football 4 from last year. Bear with me, but it's I think
- 14:52it's worth it. The what?
- 14:58Oh, sorry. There we.
- 15:02Go. No sound coach, so we talk about
- 15:18the first leg again, being steady.
- 15:24We're down in Lane 3. Again, we want to be steady.
- 15:38Our guys just not giving up on us.
- 15:40He's keeping us there. Our guy should be on the outside
- 15:52a little more in three, but again, your second leg has to be
- 15:59a guy that's willing to run that turn.
- 16:00Qualifying just two days ago, teams in contention got to be
- 16:05really aware of the lines on that track.
- 16:07Now they're past all of those problems.
- 16:09Now you got to know what's going on out in front of you.
- 16:11Sam's out for A&M. We're going for space at this
- 16:15point outside. I have no idea what that is.
- 16:21This is YouTube because I couldn't download coach's video.
- 16:27Imagine what USC. Now in dead last and this is Max
- 16:36Thomas trying to make up some ground.
- 16:38They have got some work to do. Keep an eye on South Florida as
- 16:42well. Pushing him through the zone.
- 16:48Get it and go now. This is third leg is our high
- 16:51jumper. He was an anchor leg in the
- 16:56prelims. Remember that third leg wants to
- 17:05be a guy that can keep you in space.
- 17:07You don't have to win in that third, but you need to be there.
- 17:09I believe that's Jalen Knox. For the USC Trojans there city
- 17:23in. Seventh position now got tight,
- 17:26didn't it? Feet Hill on third leg for
- 17:30Arkansas A&M in South Florida. Going to exchange together.
- 17:34Who has the better exchange? A&M.
- 17:36Bond on lines. Robinson, but now Florida into
- 17:41the mixed again. You want to have a measured
- 17:43approach for the Gators, but Ahmad Robinson, we know what
- 17:48kind of relay duty he could do. He ran 4320 on his leg last year
- 17:53when they set the collegiate record.
- 17:59SC is way back in the. 4th or. Better to win the title.
- 18:04But it it races Florida and ATM and look at the Bon Robinson.
- 18:07He didn't get it done in the over for me because this is when
- 18:10it's racism hockey. He's going to do everything.
- 18:12Kevin, here comes South Florida, South Florida.
- 18:20Give it up for the Bulls. All right, so that was a four by
- 18:37four and I know coach again want to see one more video.
- 18:41This would be our I can get to it here.
- 18:45This will be our 4 by 1 and they this is the 38 O 5 effort.
- 18:54Sorry, give me circle. Now again, I talk about the
- 19:16third leg, if you can, if you could be clean through the third
- 19:20leg, you got a chance and that's 38 O 5.
- 19:39So a couple things we learned in in those relays, we took a a lot
- 19:43of lumps early to figure out where we needed to be.
- 19:47We that relay for the most part. Second, when no, I take that
- 19:53back, I actually our anchor leg for the beginning of the year.
- 19:55I led him off because again, like you asked me earlier, it's
- 20:00about trying to figure out where people can be at any given time.
- 20:02You can find anchors if you have tough kids, but to be able to
- 20:06find a one in three and especially 3.
- 20:09That's what you make in my opinion you can make the most
- 20:11damage so I appreciate y'all. Give it up for Eric Jenkins.
- 20:16There you go. What a great lesson in.
- 20:22Coaching matters. I think you would agree.
- 20:25You line up those four guys against some of these other four
- 20:28guys. They don't have the, they don't
- 20:29have the best PRS, but putting them together and coaching them,
- 20:32that's how you you produce champions.
- 20:34And so that should, that should give you heart for what you're
- 20:36doing out there. It's nice to have the four
- 20:38fastest, but rarely do we have it.
- 20:41So you've got to actually, you got to coach, and that's what
- 20:44you guys and gals do very well. Hey gang, Mike Cunningham here.
- 20:48Hey, I hope you enjoyed this episode of the Guild 1918
