- 0:00Gavin: We've all been there, right?
- 0:02Gavin: Chasing bottles.
- 0:03Gavin: Tonight I have a special guest who is an avid bourbon hunter to talk allocated bottles.
- 0:41Gavin: Welcome to the Noble Graham, ladies and gents.
- 0:44Gavin: This is episode one of season three.
- 0:48Gavin: We are so excited to be here with you this evening.
- 0:52Gavin: However, Aaron could not make it this evening.
- 0:57Gavin: I think I left him a baggage claim from our previous uh trip here.
- 1:02Gavin: So um I was able to get a buddy of mine, Chad, who I had met at a bourbon drop uh not long ago.
- 1:12Gavin: So, Chad, thank you for joining us this evening.
- 1:15Gavin: Thank you very much for being here.
- 1:16Gavin: Hi, everybody.
- 1:16Gavin: I'm Chad Taters, big, big bourbon enthusiast.
- 1:20Gavin: You can see why we love Chad Taters.
- 1:24Gavin: Yeah, no, I'm excited to be here.
- 1:25Gavin: So, Chad, can you give us a little bit of background before we can really get started?
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I got I got into bourbon about five or six years ago.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: Um, uh had some buddies who got into it.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: Um, we had we had gone through a number of different uh I'll say hobbies and collecting, and uh we we gotten onto bourbon, um found out that uh there was there was a lot of fun chasing bourbon around, uh trying to track down allocated stuff, uh the kind of stuff not everybody gets a hold of.
- 1:56Gavin: Oh yeah, I could see I could see that because I've also been on the chase before and uh still am chasing some bottles.
- 2:04Gavin: Yeah, that's how we met, I think, our first time.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: We were at a we were at a bottle drop at a uh a local retailer uh managed to get in and get us some fun stuff.
- 2:15Gavin: Yes, absolutely.
- 2:16Gavin: And I first met Chad in line outside.
- 2:21Gavin: It was one of those kind of um drops where you really needed to get there early.
- 2:28Gavin: And so what I think I got I got there probably like 6 a.m.
- 2:32Gavin: and the store opened at like 10.
- 2:33Gavin: So you will you were there before I was.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: Me and my buddies, we uh we typically go the night before, camp out.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, I you know, I I don't remember exactly what time we got there that night, but I'm gonna guess somewhere around 10 o'clock the night before, had some cold ones with us.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: Sat back, relaxed, uh, show up with your lawn chair and just chill out for the night, have a good time.
- 2:53Gavin: When you mean when you said cold ones, do you mean like beer or was it cold outside?
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, it didn't really get cold in Houston, right?
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: Um uh it's the nice part about camping out here is we don't have to worry about frostbite.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, I know I you know you show up with a cooler, sit back, relax, uh, put your feet up.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: Uh if you got a group of guys, you know, you maybe catch a couple Zs.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: But um overall, I mean it's just a good time.
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: It's like tailgating overnight, getting ready for the game.
- 3:24Gavin: That's you know, probably the best explanation of a bourbon drop camping out is just like a huge tailgate, which is why I love it, because there's a big culture and camaraderie.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we got busted once for having a hibachi grill on the sidewalk that came out and told us no, so we don't really want to do that anymore.
- 3:41Gavin: You know, there's more of a more of a cold cuts party, if you know what I mean.
- 3:45Gavin: There was one one drop I went to that uh somebody had left a taco, like a taco bell taco on the side of the sidewalk.
- 3:52Gavin: And then another guy came over and ate it.
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: They opened the doors, man.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: You gotta go.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you gotta get after it.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Early bird gets the worm, they say.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Well, I true facts, true facts.
- 4:04Gavin: I really don't want to get the worm, but you know.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: Well, that's if you're into chasing tequilas, I guess.
- 4:10Gavin: Fair.
- 4:10Gavin: That's a good point.
- 4:11Gavin: That's a good point.
- 4:13Gavin: All right.
- 4:13Gavin: Um, so the premise of tonight was to talk about kind of those bottles that everyone likes to chase.
- 4:22Gavin: And so we have some bottles up here that you know I think we could probably start tasting through if you'd like.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I kind of I'll be honest, I don't drink a ton of bourbon.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: I really like going out in the chasing part, but um, I I I'm excited, I'm excited to have a drink with you.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: You don't can can you repeat that?
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: You don't you don't drink?
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: No, I I mean I I mean I do a little bit, a little bit, because you got like you get one, you want to kind of know what it's about, but I in the grand scheme of things, I I tend to drink beer.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: I I like tequilas now, like they kind of become a thing.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: Um, so like I'm I drink some, but not not a lot, not a lot.
- 5:03Gavin: Well, when we were talking in line, you were telling me that you have like a bar that could rival Aaron's.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: No, no, I've I've got a I've got a really nice selection.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, I've got the the rainbows of the Wellers, I've got the full Pappy set, I've got the full set of of blands, I've actually got some overseas stuff.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: I I mean I've I've got a really nice collection.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: We just don't part like once you crack it open, it loses its value, right?
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: You can't you can't move a bottle on the secondary if it's already open.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Nobody nobody trusts anybody these days.
- 5:37Gavin: All right, well, I think I know where we're gonna go uh in this episode.
- 5:42Gavin: If that's if that's kind of you know kind of where we're going here.
- 5:46Gavin: All right.
- 5:48Gavin: I you know, I'm somebody that that I don't I don't collect.
- 5:52Gavin: Um I'm somebody that I like to drink the whiskey, like to share the whiskey.
- 5:57Gavin: So, you know.
- 5:58Gavin: Yeah, it's what I'm here for.
- 5:59Gavin: We're gonna drink some of your stuff so I don't have to open my bottles.
- 6:02SPEAKER_04: Well, all right.
- 6:03Gavin: Well, let's I think I think we should go ahead and have a pour before we really get going on anything.
- 6:07Gavin: All right, all right, all right.
- 6:08Gavin: So you said that you had some of the wellers.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: So before we do do you do we normally drink this with like ice or coke or like how do you normally drink bourbon on the show?
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: I'm honest, I haven't watched a ton of episodes.
- 6:26Gavin: So obviously, okay.
- 6:27Gavin: So the way we typically do it um is we like to try everything neat.
- 6:33Gavin: No water, no ice, nothing.
- 6:35Gavin: Oh my occasionally we might uh might need a splash of water, might not.
- 6:43Gavin: Okay.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: I would explain the water then.
- 6:45Gavin: Yeah, we've had one show where um we did have uh some ice on.
- 6:53Gavin: Um but is that frowned upon?
- 6:56Gavin: I would say not so much frowned upon, but I what I would always say is try it neat and then work your way through it.
- 7:05Gavin: If it's a little too much, have a little too much punch for you, then then maybe a little dab of water.
- 7:10Gavin: Um, you know, good rule of thumb, we don't have a bottle water here, but take a little water, put it in the water or in the in the cap, and then pour it in.
- 7:18Gavin: Okay.
- 7:18Gavin: Um if you say that's what we're doing, that's what we're doing.
- 7:21Gavin: Yeah, I think that's where we need to start.
- 7:23Gavin: Let's start there, and then if we need something, we can accommodate that.
- 7:27Gavin: How about that?
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: Uh all right, you got me.
- 7:30Gavin: Okay, so you mentioned the wellers.
- 7:33Gavin: I think to me, weller is one of those bottles that just about everybody that's a bourbon drinker or lover loves this bottle.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you can you can turn a weller for sure.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: What do you mean?
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: Man, everybody's chasing the well.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, not so much the the green label, but the rest of them, you get a hold of one, you you can get two, three times your money for those bottles.
- 7:57Gavin: Okay, so I what I want to preface here is there may be some conversations that we may disagree on tonight on the show.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Nah, I mean, if if you're if you're selling bottles for less than two, three times their their face value on on the Weller set, like you you're missing the mark.
- 8:17Gavin: Okay, so I'm gonna disagree with you there because you know, Chad, remember what we talked about before um, you know, when we when we first met, I I'm not a uh resell kind of guy.
- 8:31Gavin: Um and and what you're saying kind of reminds me of somebody that you really just want to resell.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: But before we go there, you gotta have one in your collection, but once you got one, like you can resell the other ones.
- 8:47Gavin: I I tend to not be there, and and I the noble dram fam may not really enjoy that so much either.
- 8:55Gavin: You might but I'm just I'm just supplying a need.
- 9:00Gavin: That's also one of those things that I understand.
- 9:04Gavin: I understand that's you know, professional life here, I get it.
- 9:09Gavin: Um, but let's get back on track a little bit here.
- 9:12Gavin: Sorry.
- 9:12Gavin: Um I really want to take you on an adventure this evening.
- 9:18Gavin: Is that okay?
- 9:19Gavin: Yep, let's do it.
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: Okay, so I did watch the episode where you said that an adventure means you have somebody with you.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I remember that one.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:27SPEAKER_03: I remember that one.
- 9:27Gavin: That was let's go on an adventure together because what I hear is you're you like to chase really allocated.
- 9:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, if if it's available on a shelf at any store, like what's the point in having it?
- 9:44SPEAKER_03: So here we go.
- 9:46Gavin: So um this bottle right here is one that I actually recently purchased.
- 9:52Gavin: Um, 107s, that's a good one.
- 9:55Gavin: Everybody loves that one.
- 9:55Gavin: I was actually at Buffalo Trace a few weeks ago um and picked up a bottle.
- 10:00Gavin: So um how many they let you get?
- 10:02Gavin: One.
- 10:04Gavin: I hate I hate that rule.
- 10:05Gavin: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: You know.
- 10:08Gavin: But when you're there, let's might as well get it.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: The key is you gotta bring a couple buddies with you.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: They get bottles.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, especially if they don't drink, then yeah, most of my buddies aren't big drinkers either, but oh, all right.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: But like I said, man, it's a fun way to spend a spend a night.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: For sure, for sure.
- 10:29Gavin: Alright, so Alright, so what are we are we drinking this?
- 10:33Gavin: Well, yeah, I think I think we should we should have a pour.
- 10:37Gavin: Alright.
- 10:37Gavin: Alright.
- 10:39Gavin: And then I want to take us on an adventure.
- 10:41Gavin: Oh, look.
- 10:43Gavin: Amateur hour over here.
- 10:45Gavin: You want me to show you how to do it?
- 10:47Gavin: Yeah, what's your teeth?
- 10:49Gavin: Uh-oh.
- 10:50Gavin: Uh-oh.
- 10:52Gavin: Now you're in trouble.
- 10:53Gavin: Now I'm in trouble.
- 10:56Gavin: That one just broke off inside, ladies and gents.
- 11:00Gavin: And uh, you know, I'm gonna do what Aaron does.
- 11:05Gavin: And we're gonna work that one out later.
- 11:08Gavin: Here we go.
- 11:09Gavin: Here we go, folks.
- 11:10Gavin: It gonna taste like cork.
- 11:13Gavin: Well, it's getting corky.
- 11:17Gavin: All right, see, this is this is part of the impromptu uh whiskey tasting right here.
- 11:22Gavin: You never know what's gonna happen when that cork pops, may not pop.
- 11:28Gavin: How come you didn't pour it all the way full?
- 11:31Gavin: Well, you know, etiquette.
- 11:36Gavin: All right, you if you say so.
- 11:38Gavin: All right, well, we're gonna just put the broken cork on top there, and then you can see the floater in there.
- 11:45Gavin: Look at that.
- 11:46Gavin: I don't think you should say so you could see the floater.
- 11:50Gavin: Well, you know, there's other ways to see floaters.
- 11:54Gavin: What so just get to drinking then?
- 11:58Gavin: Yeah, so I what kind of how we typically do an episode is we like to nose it.
- 12:05Gavin: Uh, we like to what we say, sniff, sip, and savor.
- 12:11Gavin: So we nose it, we taste it, and then we talk about the palate and the finish.
- 12:18Gavin: All right.
- 12:19Gavin: So we can do that.
- 12:21Gavin: That one burns well.
- 12:23Gavin: Uh they all do that?
- 12:26Gavin: Not it is it because it's neat?
- 12:28Gavin: Yeah, it's it is a pretty neat bottle.
- 12:30Gavin: No, I mean, because there's no ice.
- 12:34Gavin: Oh, yeah.
- 12:35Gavin: Um well this one, it is 107, right?
- 12:40Gavin: Uh that's it's inherent because of the name.
- 12:42Gavin: Uh, Weller is known.
- 12:45Gavin: Well, the antique 107 is known for a weeded bourbon.
- 12:49Gavin: So it's gonna probably have a little bit of a so this is a weeder.
- 12:54Gavin: Yes, a weeder, gotcha.
- 12:56Gavin: A wheat turf.
- 12:57Gavin: Yeah.
- 12:58Gavin: Yeah.
- 12:59Gavin: A lot of people chasing the weeders.
- 13:01Gavin: Not a weeder, a wee tur.
- 13:03Gavin: Did I say it wrong?
- 13:05Gavin: Well, a weeder.
- 13:07Gavin: Wheat.
- 13:07Gavin: We've gotcha.
- 13:10Gavin: Yes, yes, yes.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: A weeder is like It's like that Budweiser commercial with the frogs.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: A wheat err.
- 13:16Gavin: You are a beer guy side.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: I'm not really a Buddhist.
- 13:22Gavin: That's maybe a whole new episode, but what do you typically what do you typically drink when it's beer?
- 13:27Gavin: I'm a I'm a Miller Light drinker.
- 13:29Gavin: A Miller Light.
- 13:30Gavin: Yep.
- 13:30Gavin: Okay.
- 13:31Gavin: All right.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: Well, that's you can drink them all night long, still get in line in the morning.
- 13:38Gavin: All right.
- 13:39Gavin: How many 12 packs do you go through in a week?
- 13:43Gavin: Oh man.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: I don't buy them by the 12.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: But 24?
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: The yeah, if you if you can get them at Sam's Club, you can get 30 packs.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: There was a there was a suitcase.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: I don't know what they call a 30 pack.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: Suitcase was 24 when I was a kid.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: I don't know now, like a trunk.
- 14:04Gavin: So I would love to know kind of where Chad came from.
- 14:10Gavin: This is making my beard grow.
- 14:12Gavin: Well, I like your beard.
- 14:14Gavin: It's a it's a good looking beard.
- 14:16Gavin: Tinkles of mustache.
- 14:17Gavin: Yeah, and I like the mustache.
- 14:20Gavin: You know.
- 14:21Gavin: Sorry.
- 14:21Gavin: Sorry, you were asking a question.
- 14:22Gavin: I apologize.
- 14:23Gavin: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:24Gavin: So uh where so are you from the area?
- 14:28Gavin: Yeah, born and raised right here in Houston.
- 14:30Gavin: Right here in Houston.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: I know, I know.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: The jersey makes you think I'm from Kansas with the Superman thing, but that's not true.
- 14:41Gavin: I wasn't even gonna say Kansas.
- 14:42Gavin: I mean that's that's where Superman's from.
- 14:44Gavin: Is it really?
- 14:45Gavin: Yeah.
- 14:46Gavin: I had no idea.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: Did you not have a comic book when you were a kid?
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: Do I look like a comic book kid?
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: To be honest, you still look like a kid.
- 14:56Gavin: Uh walked right into that.
- 14:58Gavin: All right.
- 15:00Gavin: So here's what I want to do.
- 15:01Gavin: Here's what I want to do.
- 15:02Gavin: All right.
- 15:03Gavin: I want you to take a minute, come, enjoy that, and while you're enjoying that we did that already.
- 15:11Gavin: Now what are we doing?
- 15:13Gavin: What I want to do is maybe find something in the room that may be similar to this Weller Antique 107.
- 15:24Gavin: Because how come?
- 15:26Gavin: When you chase, it basically means you don't have it yet.
- 15:32Gavin: And when you don't have it, unless you're chasing number two or that, you know.
- 15:37Gavin: Or three.
- 15:38Gavin: Here's what I would say.
- 15:39Gavin: Get a whole case of it if you can.
- 15:40Gavin: Here's what I'd say.
- 15:41Gavin: Having backups, I'm all about.
- 15:44Gavin: If there is a bourbon or whiskey, scotch, whatever it is, and you love it, go grab another one.
- 15:51Gavin: There's no harm, no foul.
- 15:54Gavin: I have a few backups of some really wonderful bottles.
- 15:57Gavin: I'm glad to hear that.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: Kind of felt like there for a minute you were kind of taking an antagonistic approach to be.
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: I I'm never, I'm never but now that now that I know that you're like, yeah, get as much as you want.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: I didn't say that.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: I didn't say that.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: I no, you said you said get more if you can get it.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: That's all I'm saying.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: That's all I do.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: That's all I'm doing.
- 16:20Gavin: The difference is, based on what I know about you, Chad, and what you have already divulged to our wonderful viewers out there, is that once you have one on the shelf, you like to try to resell it, which uh No, I see, I see it as I'm spreading the love.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: Not everybody has the time to get out, stand in line, get your points, get your tickets, hand or your raffles, all that stuff to get these bottles.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm simply providing a service for those who don't have that kind of convenience.
- 16:58Gavin: You're kind of the middle, middle, middleman in a way.
- 17:00Gavin: I'm like the second half middleman.
- 17:03Gavin: Second half middleman.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: No, I listen.
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: I know there are people out there who want bourbons and and what they and they can't get a hold of them.
- 17:14SPEAKER_03: If I have one and they're interested in it, who am I to say no?
- 17:19Gavin: So, all right, I want you to talk a little bit about how you interact with people that might want one of your bottles.
- 17:31Gavin: Like how does that work?
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: As little as possible.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: Wait, where are you going?
- 17:37Gavin: I'm going to find us a bottle that I think would pair very well with this.
- 17:43Gavin: By pairing, I mean comparison-wise.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: So, do you want me to talk to you when I answer the question, or I talk to the talk to our wonderful viewers out there.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: I want you to kind of tell us a little bit about how you we live in a world where you don't know who to trust and who not to trust.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: So if you're selling bottles, or hell, if you're buying bottles online, I think it is best for you to be careful.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: You never know.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: We live in a state where conceal carries a thing.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: You don't want to find yourself on the wrong end.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: And so I I've always said, like, if you're going to buy or sell, you're going to do it in a place where there's other people around, and you don't have to worry about getting jumped.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: Nothing like that.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, the last thing you want, I mean, you hear the stories of the guys that run into trouble.
- 18:33SPEAKER_03: And I Matt, I don't waste that on anybody.
- 18:36Gavin: So, like maybe like a Walmart parking lot or sure, Walmart might be a bit rough, but yeah.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: It depends on where you live, alright?
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: HGV.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: So, like parking lots are pretty commonplace for for meetups.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: Um, I I often I often try to do it at a spot because you never know, you might end up waiting.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: So a lot of times I'll pick a place I can go grab a bite of lunch.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: And I'm waiting for them, and then they just text when they get in the parking lot, I can come out, take care of things, all right, and then finish up my lunch and head on back.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: Okay, gotcha.
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: So, nobody's house.
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: And I'll be honest, the out where I live, there's a there's a uh police station, they've got a spot out front that you can go and make your purchases online for like Facebook Marketplace and and such not.
- 19:34SPEAKER_03: But don't do there.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: Uh the last thing you need is somebody with video evidence of you buying and selling liquor.
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: Well, that's a whole different thing.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: So we should clarify.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: I exchange gifts with people online.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: Gifts?
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: I I receive a gift from them, and out of the gratitude of the gift I've received, I often give them a bottle of bourbon.
- 20:00Gavin: I gotcha.
- 20:01Gavin: I gotcha.
- 20:02Gavin: Yeah.
- 20:02Gavin: Okay.
- 20:03Gavin: All right.
- 20:04Gavin: Well, let's just take a break on that one.
- 20:06Gavin: Because I'm really interested.
- 20:08Gavin: Alright.
- 20:09Gavin: Wait, what are you doing?
- 20:10Gavin: You're opening another one?
- 20:12Gavin: Yeah.
- 20:12Gavin: I want you to give me your give me an empty glass.
- 20:15Gavin: Alright, hold up.
- 20:16Gavin: I got another one here.
- 20:17Gavin: So so these are called Glenn Karen's.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:19Gavin: All right.
- 20:20Gavin: I don't know if this is how you typically drink.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: No, it's a guy, a guy named Glenn Karen who invented them.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: I read about this online.
- 20:26Gavin: It was he a Karen.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: Do you know what a Karen is?
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: You run into Karen's at my line of work.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: Alright.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: Alright, so what is this one again?
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: This is Barge Town.
- 20:42Gavin: Um yeah, no, they got some they got some sought-after stuff too.
- 20:46Gavin: So Bargetown Origin Series.
- 20:49Gavin: This is weeded, and I believe it is 106 proof.
- 20:54Gavin: Sounds right.
- 20:56Gavin: Another weeded bourbon, just one proof point lower than the weller.
- 21:02Gavin: You can feel it when you pick them up.
- 21:03Gavin: Yeah.
- 21:04Gavin: Well, them's a little heavier.
- 21:05Gavin: So I'm gonna put this one right here.
- 21:06Gavin: So we got our got our twins, if you will.
- 21:09Gavin: So is it supposed to smell the same?
- 21:12Gavin: I would I would say it's it's gonna have a different mash bill, right?
- 21:18Gavin: Uh, we don't know all of what weller mash bill is.
- 21:22Gavin: There is a out there a guess estimate of what that mash bill is on the weller, which I do have my own bones to pick with Buffalo Trace, because let's be just transparent about everything.
- 21:36Gavin: Let's put our mash bills up.
- 21:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Buffalo Trace makes a ton of stuff that's hard to get a hold of.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: I I'm a big fan of Buffalo Trace.
- 21:43Gavin: Yeah, I know.
- 21:44Gavin: Yeah, you are.
- 21:45Gavin: Yeah, for sure.
- 21:45Gavin: You're a big so uh Barge Town Origin series, very similar proof point, also weeded.
- 21:54Gavin: This, I believe they do tell us um we are 53% corn.
- 22:00Gavin: 39% wheat.
- 22:03Gavin: Is that a lot?
- 22:04Gavin: Uh yeah.
- 22:05Gavin: It feels like a lot.
- 22:06Gavin: This would be a true wheater.
- 22:10Gavin: And then we're at 8% malted barley.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: So again, we don't know a lot about the mashville here.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: How much different do they change with time?
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: Like it's because that's a newer bottle.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: Does that taste different just because it's been open and in the glass longer?
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: Because they're similar, but not the same.
- 22:35Gavin: I would say they're not the same.
- 22:39Gavin: And that's okay.
- 22:42Gavin: I think there's an experience that you want, and there's a honestly, when it comes to hunting allocated bottles for me, I'm not paying crazy amount of money.
- 22:56Gavin: I'm sorry.
- 22:56Gavin: I'm not your typical customer.
- 22:58Gavin: Me either.
- 22:59SPEAKER_03: I'm selling for crazy amounts of money.
- 23:03SPEAKER_03: My money's made in the delta, the difference, right?
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: I want to buy cheap, buy low, sell high.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: You understand what I'm saying?
- 23:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I get it.
- 23:12Gavin: I get it.
- 23:12Gavin: In my line of work, I totally understand that.
- 23:14Gavin: Um I'm also when I'm looking at a bottle in comparison, I want the experience.
- 23:22Gavin: I want something that's similar, kind of like it.
- 23:24Gavin: I may not get the exact same thing, but it is something that I want to try, and it's readily available on the shelf.
- 23:32Gavin: Um, I don't know exactly what the MSRP.
- 23:36Gavin: I know what I paid for this a few weeks ago, which was a little over 50 bucks.
- 23:41Gavin: I think this one is right around 50 bucks, 60 bucks itself.
- 23:46Gavin: So about the same.
- 23:47Gavin: So it's about the same.
- 23:48Gavin: All right.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: Um one is a little darker versus the other.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: What you're telling me is that Bardstown.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: Bardstown?
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Bardstown.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Like that one's one you can get in at any store.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: So there's really no secondary markup allocation pride.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: Like none of that exists with Bardstown.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: That is I'm that's a damn shang.
- 24:13Gavin: There are certain barge towns that could be hard to find for sure.
- 24:18Gavin: Yeah, get you some of them discoveries sometimes.
- 24:20Gavin: Yep, right.
- 24:21Gavin: And discover the discoveries, but um it's something that's this bottle's a little bit more available than you can get uh the wood most of the time.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: I'll be honest, it doesn't taste as hot.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: It does not.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: Is that because it I didn't think I'd be able to taste one proof difference?
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: But it it's noticeably not as hot on that first set.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 24:47Gavin: Yeah, you know, it could be the matter of what the mash fill is, if there's something in there that might ration it up a little bit.
- 24:57Gavin: It could be if there was any uh dilution, because they do, distilleries do put water back in into it to get things to a certain proof point.
- 25:09Gavin: So depending on if that happened or not, then that could also make that kind of fluctuation of how that mouth fills.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: Going back now, the the weller doesn't taste as hot as I remembered it.
- 25:23Gavin: Well, also, we started at 107, right?
- 25:27Gavin: So this 107 is a little just just barely, you know, right?
- 25:32Gavin: Just a little bit higher proof than this one.
- 25:34Gavin: So there is gonna be that you went high and then you're just coming down just a tad bit.
- 25:40Gavin: So there's a bit of that that could happen.
- 25:42Gavin: Could right?
- 25:44Gavin: Um, but also your palate's starting to warm up a little bit, right?
- 25:48Gavin: We're starting to get that workout.
- 25:50Gavin: Yeah.
- 25:50Gavin: We had that pre-run.
- 25:52Gavin: Now we're now we're really going.
- 25:53Gavin: I don't mean how to run, but I believe you.
- 25:56Gavin: Well, I don't know, those that muscle shirt makes me think that work out a little bit.
- 26:00Gavin: I get sweaty.
- 26:01Gavin: Sweaty.
- 26:02Gavin: Yeah, I need I need the air.
- 26:04Gavin: I got you.
- 26:05Gavin: I'm getting lots of air.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: I'm from Houston, right?
- 26:08Gavin: Right.
- 26:09Gavin: Yeah.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: My entire life just trying to figure out how to not sweat.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 26:14SPEAKER_03: The other reason I like to do my handoffs when I'm at a restaurant when I can sit down inside.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: I don't have to sit in a parking lot where it's hot.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: I didn't know where you were going with handoffs, but it was I don't I don't know if you can tell by looking at me, but I was a pretty good football player back in the day, so I've been taking handoffs for years.
- 26:35Gavin: Oh, geez, Louise.
- 26:37Gavin: All right.
- 26:38Gavin: Um, sorry, mom and I I like I like those.
- 26:44Gavin: Those are good.
- 26:45Gavin: All right.
- 26:45Gavin: Uh well, I'm really glad that you're liking the Barge Town.
- 26:51Gavin: So can I can I ask a question?
- 26:55Gavin: Sure.
- 26:57Gavin: Between these two bottles, I I know it kind of hurts your your business plan, and I know you're not a big bourbon drinker, but would you could I could could you see my side of things to maybe venture off into maybe enjoying some more whiskey rather than trying to resell it?
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: Well, uh, so what I'll say, are the the secondary price that a lot of people are paying for Weller compared to what is no secondary price essentially for the Barnstown.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: I they're very similar.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: I enjoy them both.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: Like bang for the buck, as they say.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: I get it.
- 27:49SPEAKER_03: I I see your point.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: I I'll say I'm not gonna go chase a Barnstown, there's no money in it.
- 27:59SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, if I was if I was a bit more of a bourbon drinker, I got I could see drinking either of these.
- 28:08Gavin: Okay.
- 28:08Gavin: So let me ask one more question.
- 28:11Gavin: Would you, if I wasn't here and you had these bottles at home, and you weren't gonna resell them, how would you drink them?
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: Well, I I it normally if I'm drinking bourbon at home, I I like it with a little bit of ice and a splash of dye coke.
- 28:31SPEAKER_03: Trying to watch my figure.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: I just like bourbon and cokes.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: You know, that that's kind of what I grew up drinking.
- 28:38Gavin: Okay.
- 28:39Gavin: All right.
- 28:39Gavin: Hey, you know, these may not be the bottles just personally to mix with Coke, but again, no judgment.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: Well, I disagree.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: I think that weather would be delicious with coke.
- 28:50Gavin: You think so?
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 28:53Gavin: All right, all right.
- 28:54Gavin: Well, I really appreciate your take on these.
- 29:01Gavin: Um, typically, Aaron and I would do full tasting notes and give it a score.
- 29:07Gavin: Right.
- 29:08Gavin: You're a guest.
- 29:09Gavin: I want to just make sure that you are as comfortable as can be.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 29:13Gavin: I want you to feel at home here.
- 29:16Gavin: So um, we're not gonna do the official scoring.
- 29:19Gavin: I just want you to say, like, would you purchase for your shelf the Bargetown?
- 29:28Gavin: We already know you got a weller.
- 29:29Gavin: Would you purchase the Barge Town?
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like I got nothing against it, right?
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: I think it'd be a tasty, tasty sipper.
- 29:37Gavin: All right.
- 29:38Gavin: All right.
- 29:39Gavin: With that being said, we are gonna take a quick break.
- 29:43Gavin: And uh, we got something special for you um after this.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: Are you looking for hard-to-find allocated bourbons?
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: Chad Taber's here, and I'm the man who can make it up.
- 29:55SPEAKER_04: Chad, what are you doing?
- 29:57SPEAKER_03: Check me out on Facebook or reach out to the boys of the Noble Dram.
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: They know how to get a hold of me.
- 30:02Gavin: Let's know what we're doing here.
- 30:06Gavin: Welcome back, everyone, to the second half of the Noble Dram with special guest, Chad Tayers.
- 30:14Gavin: That's me.
- 30:15Gavin: Chad, thanks again for being here.
- 30:16Gavin: Oh man, this has been fun so far.
- 30:18Gavin: All right.
- 30:19Gavin: Well, I had a blast on the first half and the first few tastings.
- 30:25Gavin: Yeah.
- 30:26Gavin: So I'm excited to see where we go from here.
- 30:29Gavin: All right.
- 30:31Gavin: What do we do next?
- 30:32Gavin: Well, what I would like for you to do um is pick us a bottle from the allocator bottles we got here on the table.
- 30:42Gavin: Oh, okay.
- 30:43Gavin: Well, you know, your pick.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: I all of them have been opened but one.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: So I kind of feel like we gotta go with the one that's not open, mostly because it's not mine.
- 30:57SPEAKER_03: If it was mine, I would steer you away from the unopened bottle.
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: I don't want to hold on to that one.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: But since we're here, I you know, you know, the the daddy stag is one of those bottles that is incredibly sought after.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: I've I've managed to get four or five in my days, not very many of those.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: But the junior, that that one's one that I'll say, although much easier to get than the dad, um, it's still a tough bottle to find.
- 31:25SPEAKER_03: You can you can still get a uh a hefty little dose of extra boolah, so to speak.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I feel like what I like to do is you get you get three bottles of it.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: And then what you can do is you can keep one and you actually make enough on the other two to pay for the first one.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: And it just basically nets out anything you put in your own collection.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: Hey, good job on that one.
- 31:58Gavin: Good job on that one.
- 31:59Gavin: Came in tech.
- 31:59Gavin: Yeah, can I get a let me get one of your glasses here?
- 32:06Gavin: And uh something that Aaron always makes fun of me for.
- 32:11Gavin: It does seem like a lot.
- 32:12Gavin: It is a lot.
- 32:13Gavin: Here's that, and then I got a little junior with the build part.
- 32:19SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's only outside the glass.
- 32:20Gavin: Well, so I like to uh it's cologne.
- 32:24Gavin: Would you would you like some?
- 32:25Gavin: No, I think I'm so there we go.
- 32:30Gavin: All right.
- 32:30Gavin: Alright, so this is the Stag Junior.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: Now, which one is this?
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: Because these all got different, these all got different releases.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: You gotta figure out which one this is.
- 32:42Gavin: Well, I don't know.
- 32:43Gavin: You got your spectacles.
- 32:44Gavin: Can you uh what else?
- 32:45Gavin: Can you read that one?
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: When I was a young lad, I could I could see just from ladies.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: This is 24 C.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: Ladd.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: This is the pirate version.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: The pirate pirate's dad.
- 32:57Gavin: Be the sea.
- 32:58Gavin: It'd be the sea.
- 33:00Gavin: Man, that I've never heard that one before.
- 33:03Gavin: Really?
- 33:03Gavin: Yeah.
- 33:04Gavin: That's an oldie.
- 33:05Gavin: Yeah.
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: My grandpappy used to tell that joke.
- 33:10Gavin: Um yeah, this one, this one, we're st we're stepping up a tad bit on the proof on this one.
- 33:17Gavin: What are we?
- 33:18Gavin: We are the last one made my beard grow.
- 33:20Gavin: This is making my chest hair pop out.
- 33:22Gavin: I think uh, well, I don't think I'm reading 128.9 proof on that 24C.
- 33:30Gavin: So we are That's a hot one, right?
- 33:32Gavin: We are we're going hot.
- 33:33Gavin: We're going hot.
- 33:35Gavin: Um as we're as we're nosing this one and tasting it, I want to know kind of what are some of Chad's tricks to bourbon hunting?
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: Hold on, I got a question before we do that.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: Can I interrupt?
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: I apologize.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: I apologize.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: I liked what you did on the last bottle.
- 33:53unknown: Okay.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: Two bottles.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: So is there is there a recommendation for an alternate to a stag junior that I can drink alongside this?
- 34:11Gavin: Sure, you're jumping the gun a little bit there, Chad.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: No, I I wanna I wanna hear me out.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: I think I was swayed a bit by the fact that I had drank so much Weller before I got to the Bardstown, it skewed my perceptions.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: I think I may have gotten too much Weller in my mustache, and then when I drank the Bardstown, it made it taste kind of like the Weller.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: I got you.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: Not positive, they're as similar as I they tasted.
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna try to avoid that this time.
- 34:46Gavin: All right, so you want something comparable.
- 34:51Gavin: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:52Gavin: Like I know in the real estate business they'll they'll say comps or comparables, right?
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't I don't even own a house.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: I mean I just rent the trailer.
- 35:00Gavin: Huh.
- 35:01Gavin: I uh uh it surprised me one bit, but you know, I I can't wait to to visit one day because I'd really love to see this collection that you've got going on.
- 35:12Gavin: Oh I've seen a picture, but you know, it's nice.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: It's got I think a bookcase it's got it's got the color changing LED lights on it.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: It is really nice.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: Real nice.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: Got it.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: I got it off Amazon.
- 35:22Gavin: Uh the the lights or the the bookshelf?
- 35:25Gavin: Yeah, well both, probably.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: Well, actually, I think I got I think I got the bookcase off of Facebook Marketplace.
- 35:33SPEAKER_03: Okay, there's no shame for that.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: I've got to be able to do that.
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: There was some kid he was he was moving out of his apartment and didn't want to move it.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: Oh it's heavy.
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: Took me and three of my boys to get that thing down them stairs.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: Boys?
- 35:46SPEAKER_03: You got kids?
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: That's why I call them a buds.
- 35:49SPEAKER_03: Oh, oh.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: Your beers?
- 35:51SPEAKER_03: My buds.
- 35:51SPEAKER_03: No, no, my beers.
- 35:53SPEAKER_03: Beers are different kinds of friends.
- 35:55SPEAKER_03: Those are kind of friends that'll never steer you up.
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: That's a good point.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: They're always there for you.
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: Uh I apologize though.
- 36:02SPEAKER_03: You were asking me a question.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: So then I asked you a question, and then we derailed the question that I asked in response to your question.
- 36:09SPEAKER_03: You're pretty sharp.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: Let's say.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: I'm afraid after the next one, though, I might lose a bit of my edge.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 36:16Gavin: So something similar to a stag junior recommendation.
- 36:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 36:24SPEAKER_03: So you asked a question.
- 36:25SPEAKER_03: What were you what were you asking me?
- 36:27Gavin: I was wondering, kind of, what are your tips and tricks for hunting bourbons?
- 36:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 36:40SPEAKER_03: Like you are you looking for my honey hole?
- 36:42SPEAKER_03: Is that you're trying to figure it out?
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: Not necessarily your honey hole.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna tell anybody where my once you get a spot, you don't let go of that one.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: It's like it's like if you're fishing.
- 36:53SPEAKER_03: You don't let anybody know your fishing spot.
- 36:56SPEAKER_03: That's fair.
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: You want to if buddy wants to go fishing with you, you blindfold him so he don't know where he is when you get there.
- 37:03SPEAKER_03: And put him in the trunk, right?
- 37:05SPEAKER_03: No, it's in a boat.
- 37:06SPEAKER_03: There's no trunk in a boat.
- 37:08SPEAKER_03: Oh, oh.
- 37:09SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: Um smart as you look, you know it.
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: Well, all right, sorry.
- 37:16SPEAKER_03: So tricks your tips for getting allocated bourbon.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: All right, so first things first, you need to understand the system that the store uses.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: Some stores use a point-based system for like every dollar you spend, you get a point, and you get so many points, and then they'll give out bottles.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: I shouldn't say give out, they don't give anything away.
- 37:44SPEAKER_03: You are afforded the opportunity to purchase a bottle at retail price.
- 37:53SPEAKER_03: So you accumulate points, and then periodically they'll do these big releases, and they'll have all these bottles.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: Sometimes you have a set bottle, right?
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: We gotta can I say names on the show?
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: If you'd like.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: So Total One does theirs, and they actually tell you you have a bottle of this with your name on it, you just gotta go to the store and pick it up.
- 38:17SPEAKER_03: So you go down there and you can buy that one bottle.
- 38:21SPEAKER_03: Other stores will sometimes do you turn in your points, but you gotta be there that day, get in line, and that makes you eligible for stuff.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: Sometimes they'll do points for points for buying bottles, but you have oh, sorry, sorry, sorry, right here.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: Here, I'll switch you a glass there.
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: My God, you weren't joking, you do pour tall.
- 38:52SPEAKER_03: All right, so sometimes the points that they give you are only for a certain period of time.
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: Other ones they that roll out, roll over, is what they say, that last a lot longer.
- 39:09SPEAKER_03: And then and then other stores don't do points at all.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: Sometimes it's you gotta buy packs.
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: There's a couple stores in town that they're big on bundles, and you gotta go in and buy three bottles of stuff to get that one bottle and it's all together and just one price for the whole thing.
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: Um and I think to be honest, I think they're just trying to move some of their underperforming products, if you will.
- 39:38SPEAKER_03: And they just lump it in with a good one so that way they suck you into it.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: Kind of like employees.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, kinda.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: Kind of.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: Some of them suck.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: But you hope you get a good one.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: No, what you get, though, is then you gotta figure out what you're gonna do with this junk whiskey that you had to buy to get there.
- 39:59Gavin: There's something that I tell my daughter, you get what you get and you don't throw a fit.
- 40:03SPEAKER_03: No, but this you get to pick if you buy it.
- 40:06SPEAKER_03: You just you don't get to pick what you buy.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: They've already decided.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: And then maybe the best way is you find your store and you get a buddy that works at the store, and he gives you the heads up that something's coming, whether he's a it works in the department or it works behind the counter, or or it could be the guy that owns a place, right?
- 40:28SPEAKER_03: And you just give him business and and he knows to treat you right because you know he knows you're gonna treat him right.
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: So sometimes, sometimes it's a mix of different stuff, right?
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: Sometimes the smaller stores are pretty good at getting some of the lower tier allocated stuff.
- 40:46SPEAKER_03: But some of that high tier allocated stuff, you gotta go to the big boxes.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: You gotta go to those guys that move much higher volumes in order to have those available to you.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: Um stores that sell a lot of fireball.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: Well, I don't I mean, I don't know what all they're selling in order to get there, but those guys, they're gonna move a lot of bottles.
- 41:07SPEAKER_03: And then then the distributor guys, they give them a better hookup on it, right?
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: So they get more, which means you have an opportunity to get more.
- 41:17SPEAKER_03: Um, another one is there's a lot of them are raffles.
- 41:21SPEAKER_03: Every time you buy a bottle, you get your your name in a raffle, and then at the end of the month, they just pull at random.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: And so sometimes you get lucky and you just won't buy one bottle and you end up end up winning the raffle.
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: Sometimes you buy a ton of stuff and don't end up winning nothing.
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: But man, it's about it's about hitting stores every day.
- 41:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, it it it you're not gonna get anything if you just stop in on a Saturday once in a while.
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: Like you gotta you gotta get known.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: And and yeah, I talk to a lot of guys on stores, work counters and stuff, and they say, guys, just stop in and just open the door and say, hey, you got anything allocated?
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: And I you don't get anywhere doing that.
- 42:04SPEAKER_03: You gotta you gotta know what you're looking for.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: Go out on a mission trying to find it.
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: You keep tabs on Facebook groups.
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: A lot of times guys will post when they see the truck stopping by.
- 42:18SPEAKER_03: So you start learning which truck, which distributors deliver on which days, what days that that truck's gonna be there, these kinds of products will be there.
- 42:27SPEAKER_03: You show up early, make sure you're one of the first ones in the door to ask and see if they got it.
- 42:32SPEAKER_03: Um man, early bird gets a worm every time.
- 42:35SPEAKER_03: Every time.
- 42:36Gavin: Here we are with the worm.
- 42:38Gavin: I think we're we're diving in tequila now.
- 42:40Gavin: I think we that's man, tequila!
- 42:43SPEAKER_03: You know, um, I don't know what I don't know what tone about tequila, right?
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: I still got some learnings to do, but but man, tequila looks like it's gonna be hot.
- 42:54Gavin: On the next go-round.
- 42:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think I think that's where I think that's where it's moving.
- 42:58SPEAKER_03: We're seeing stuff change, right?
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: People, palettes are changing, I guess.
- 43:02SPEAKER_03: Like market changes.
- 43:04SPEAKER_03: I I think I think we're gonna find tequila's the hot spot next.
- 43:08Gavin: That's it, that's a good point, Chad.
- 43:09Gavin: You know, talking about the market.
- 43:12Gavin: Um, if the market keeps moving and trending like we are starting to see, you might be out of a job here pretty soon.
- 43:20SPEAKER_03: No, man.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: People are always collecting something.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: A couple buddies got big into baseball cards.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 43:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I don't know, I don't know anything about them, but these guys are opening packs and they're finding cards worth of four, five, six thousand dollars in a pack of baseball cards.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, crazy kind of numbers.
- 43:40SPEAKER_03: Uh I mean, it's a little bit of risk and reward, right?
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: Like you get you gotta bet big to win big.
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: But man, these guys, these guys are pulling um baseball cards, Pokemon cards.
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: I don't even know what the hell Pokemon is, but people are making money at it.
- 43:58SPEAKER_03: I'm telling you, they're making
- 44:00Gavin: I'm surprised you don't know because you're a moneymaker machine over here, sounds like.
- 44:04Gavin: Yeah, you know, Aaron and I've got a buddy, uh Andy, who's getting into the baseball card.
- 44:11Gavin: How to meet this guy.
- 44:15Gavin: Like, it sounds legit.
- 44:17Gavin: You know, I was a baseball card fan growing up and still have my collection.
- 44:22Gavin: And uh anything in there?
- 44:24Gavin: Maybe maybe we need to talk about a lot of maybe come over and check it out.
- 44:27Gavin: Yeah, maybe I'll drop by the trailer and see what you got.
- 44:31Gavin: I'll I'll give it a look-see.
- 44:33Gavin: All right, all right.
- 44:34Gavin: Well, because again, uh you know, uh, we've invited you over to to to see our place.
- 44:41Gavin: Yeah, it's a nice place.
- 44:43SPEAKER_03: I'd love to see your I'd love to see your collection.
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: I've en I've enjoyed I've enjoyed perusing the shelves as they say.
- 44:50Gavin: I'm gonna pat down before you leave because uh I don't know if I you know um there's something about just something about it.
- 45:02SPEAKER_03: I think we need to.
- 45:03SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna tell you.
- 45:05SPEAKER_03: I'm a little I'm a little insulted, I'm a little hurt.
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: Because you're making it sound like I'm a bit of a criminal.
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: I'm not doing it.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: I'm not I'm a criminal at all.
- 45:15SPEAKER_03: I'm not I'm just a hustler.
- 45:17Gavin: Uh you you're definitely hustling for sure.
- 45:20Gavin: Um every day, baby.
- 45:22Gavin: Every day I'm hustling.
- 45:24Gavin: There's a song about that, I think.
- 45:27Gavin: Um so is there a we talked about some tips and tricks, but is there a strategy when you see a bottle?
- 45:37Gavin: You grab it.
- 45:38Gavin: You just grab it.
- 45:39Gavin: Grab it.
- 45:40Gavin: And you're just are you are you are you out the door?
- 45:43Gavin: Is there like depends?
- 45:47unknown: Right?
- 45:48SPEAKER_03: Like it depends on on what what the situation is.
- 45:52SPEAKER_03: Sometimes, sometimes they're doing uh a drop on a let's say Saturday morning, and you get in there and that starts at starts at 11 o'clock or whatever time, right?
- 46:04SPEAKER_03: And you get in, you go through line, and you start looking and realizing there ain't enough people here for all the bottles they got.
- 46:11SPEAKER_03: So you run out and get back in line again.
- 46:12SPEAKER_03: Now, a lot of the places, a lot of places will tell you only one purchase per customer.
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: So you best keep a change of clothes in the truck, go out, throw on a hat and a hoodie, do something different, right?
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: Just trying to make sure that nobody picks up on it.
- 46:28SPEAKER_03: Sometimes you go in a store, especially these big box guys, and they'll have the limit one.
- 46:35SPEAKER_03: Man, what you do is you you take as many of them off the shelf as you can.
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: And then what you do is you wander around the rest of the store and you hide them.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: Don't tell nobody I told you this, but you hide them behind other stuff in other departments.
- 46:52SPEAKER_03: So you go put it behind some stuff in the tequila section or behind some stuff in the rum section, then go make your purchase, go out to the truck, drop it off, go back in, go get you one of them other bottles, get you in a different line.
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: Now, I don't know this.
- 47:10SPEAKER_03: Rumor is when you type in your little code for your points, they might know.
- 47:16SPEAKER_03: So be careful with that.
- 47:17SPEAKER_03: If they're watching, you you'll they'll see in the system that you just bought one.
- 47:22SPEAKER_03: So sometimes it's best if you're really chasing something good, just abandon the points you're getting for it and just go get you one so you don't lose out.
- 47:31Gavin: You know, that's that's funny that you say that because I think the day that I first met you, you you were already at your truck, and I saw you circling around, and you you you had a change of clothes on, and I didn't know what was going on.
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: And man, if you get good at hiding bottles, you can come in the next day.
- 47:53SPEAKER_03: You I mean, you you you press your luck a couple times.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: Maybe maybe you stop in in the morning, get you a couple bottles, take off, lunch break rolls around, sit back over, pick you up a couple more of those bottles you hit away, right?
- 48:10SPEAKER_03: Come back when works are done.
- 48:12SPEAKER_03: Try to get you a couple more.
- 48:14SPEAKER_03: I you gotta be you gotta be quick about it.
- 48:16SPEAKER_03: And a lot of times other guys are standing there, they start questioning why you're taking bottles.
- 48:21SPEAKER_03: You gotta give them a little bit of mind your own business, right?
- 48:25SPEAKER_03: Keep your nose out of my business.
- 48:28Gavin: Well, speaking of noses, first and foremost, I want to say that we do not condone any of what Chad is talking about tonight.
- 48:37Gavin: No, I no offense.
- 48:38Gavin: I rarely have to hit anybody.
- 48:40Gavin: No offense, but I want to get back to the whiskey real quick here.
- 48:46Gavin: Um can I can you give me a little bit of rundown on how you're feeling about the Static Jr.
- 48:57Gavin: versus the Old Forester 1920?
- 49:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, now conveniently, because these look a lot alike in the glass, conveniently you poured a lot more of the old Forester.
- 49:10SPEAKER_03: Poured a lot more of the old Forester, so I'm able to keep track of which one's which.
- 49:15SPEAKER_03: So I they're both hot.
- 49:18SPEAKER_03: Like to me, it kind of reminds me when we first took our first sip of the other one, right?
- 49:23SPEAKER_03: It kind of burns hot.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: But I they are they're strikingly similar.
- 49:30SPEAKER_03: Like I don't know if one has a distinctly greater burn than the other.
- 49:37SPEAKER_03: Spicy is the right word.
- 49:39SPEAKER_03: Spicy is a good word.
- 49:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it it kind of you take a sip and kind of on the back of the throat kind of hits you.
- 49:47SPEAKER_03: Like it's you kind of burned.
- 49:50SPEAKER_03: But there's a there's a fruitiness.
- 49:55SPEAKER_03: Like they're both fruity, but not the same.
- 49:59Gavin: It's kind of how I describe Aaron.
- 50:07SPEAKER_03: He's he's a fruity kind of guy.
- 50:08SPEAKER_03: Or he's just not the same kind of fruity as you.
- 50:11SPEAKER_03: A little bit of both.
- 50:13SPEAKER_03: Maybe a little bit of both.
- 50:14SPEAKER_03: Tizar own.
- 50:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:15SPEAKER_03: Um no, what I mean is like on the on the stag, the fruit is more like cherries.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: But on the old Forester, I get more manner on that one.
- 50:31Gavin: You know, I can't believe you said that.
- 50:34Gavin: I mean, that's I it's one of the things I had written down here.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: No, you I mean, you can tell like it's there.
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it is I don't know as if I knew that would be there though.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: Is that a is that a normal thing?
- 50:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's old Forester.
- 50:48SPEAKER_03: Who puts banana in their bourbon?
- 50:50Gavin: Old Forester kind of has this thing uh where there's a bit of a banana note to it.
- 50:56Gavin: Um I think I smell banana more than I taste it, though.
- 51:00Gavin: There's times in Old Forester where I get banana bread versus like a banana runt or like a banana spoon.
- 51:10Gavin: These are the fun runs these days.
- 51:13SPEAKER_03: You you need you need to hook up with the gas station I get my lunch at, they didn't they ain't got no runs.
- 51:19SPEAKER_03: We used to eat a lot of those or kids.
- 51:21Gavin: Well, it you know, Halloween's coming up.
- 51:24Gavin: Don't be runs and give us a few weeks.
- 51:27SPEAKER_03: Man, we we don't get a lot of trick-or-treaters in the park.
- 51:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, we'll we tend to have to leave the lights on for a different reason.
- 51:36SPEAKER_03: Cut down on the riff raff, if you know what I mean.
- 51:38SPEAKER_03: I gotcha.
- 51:39Gavin: I understand.
- 51:39Gavin: I understand.
- 51:41Gavin: Well, maybe maybe Halloween we should do a bourbon night.
- 51:46SPEAKER_03: I think that might be.
- 51:47SPEAKER_03: You know, we should give bourbon out to children?
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: That seems like a crazy idea.
- 51:52Gavin: No crazier than anything we've talked about tonight.
- 51:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm pretty sure.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: We also bring your own house.
- 51:59SPEAKER_03: I'm pretty sure the long arm of the law would front of frown upon you, giving out bourbon to kids.
- 52:05Gavin: But man, I agree with I think the 1920 has more of that banana runs to it.
- 52:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, let me let me check.
- 52:17SPEAKER_03: Let me check.
- 52:17SPEAKER_03: Do you have any banana runs for me to compare it to?
- 52:20SPEAKER_03: Uh no.
- 52:21SPEAKER_03: That's what you need.
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: This this I mean, this room seems to have everything except for a candy dish.
- 52:29SPEAKER_03: There's no candy in this room at all.
- 52:33Gavin: Well, I will make sure we address that.
- 52:36SPEAKER_03: I think I think you need I think you need a bowl of runs to go with your old Forster.
- 52:43SPEAKER_03: And I dare I say you need some Twizzler cherry nibs to go with that.
- 52:54SPEAKER_03: Nibs.
- 52:54SPEAKER_03: The nibs, that's the candy right there.
- 52:56Gavin: I love me some nibs.
- 52:58Gavin: Yeah, I can tell you look like a nib lover.
- 53:01Gavin: I'm a I'm a nib lover.
- 53:02Gavin: Give me those nibbies.
- 53:05SPEAKER_03: Hmm.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: Alright.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: I'm glad you didn't ask me which one I like better, because to be honest, that'd be a tough decision.
- 53:12SPEAKER_03: Well, since you brought it up, I'd kind of like to dive into that a little bit.
- 53:16SPEAKER_03: I don't know as if I want to dive into that.
- 53:20SPEAKER_03: I so I'll say this.
- 53:28SPEAKER_03: I like these two better than the first two.
- 53:31Gavin: I can't disagree with you there.
- 53:33Gavin: I I 100% agree with that.
- 53:35Gavin: Uh uh.
- 53:36Gavin: I get forgiving that.
- 53:38Gavin: I get why it's chaste.
- 53:39Gavin: For not being much of a bourbon drinker, I think you got some good taste there.
- 53:45SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 53:45SPEAKER_03: My three X wives, I'll tell you I got nothing but good taste.
- 53:50SPEAKER_03: I'm sure they would.
- 53:53SPEAKER_03: I'm sure they don't.
- 53:54SPEAKER_03: You'd have to call them, though.
- 53:56SPEAKER_03: I'm not allowed to call any of them anymore.
- 53:58Gavin: All right, all right.
- 53:59Gavin: I think we need to leave that one there.
- 54:01Gavin: I'm not gonna touch that one, Chad.
- 54:04Gavin: Um, it's half the reason I drink.
- 54:09Gavin: It's probably half the reason you chase.
- 54:14SPEAKER_03: You're a funny feller, you know that.
- 54:16Gavin: You know.
- 54:19Gavin: What?
- 54:19Gavin: No, no, sorry.
- 54:20Gavin: I interrupted you.
- 54:21Gavin: Sorry, sorry.
- 54:21Gavin: I've been called the feller on this show a few times, and you know, I'm alright with that.
- 54:27Gavin: I can be a feller.
- 54:28Gavin: What's wrong?
- 54:29SPEAKER_03: There ain't nothing wrong with being a feller.
- 54:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm uh there's nothing wrong with it.
- 54:33SPEAKER_03: I don't think that's an insult at all.
- 54:35SPEAKER_03: Did you take that as an insult?
- 54:36SPEAKER_03: Absolutely not.
- 54:38SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 54:39SPEAKER_03: I'll say it, I'll say it again louder if I need to.
- 54:43Gavin: Well, if you need to, go for it.
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: Alright, filler.
- 54:49SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 54:50SPEAKER_03: Now, man, you know, every time I take a sip, I'm like, that's my favorite of the two.
- 54:56SPEAKER_03: And then I take a sip at the other one, I'm like, no, no, no.
- 54:59SPEAKER_03: I was wrong, that's my favorite.
- 55:01SPEAKER_03: And I come back and I'm like, no, no, no, no, that first wasn't my favorite.
- 55:05SPEAKER_03: I I like the banana, I'll be honest.
- 55:08SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 55:08SPEAKER_03: I like the banana.
- 55:11Gavin: You know, I don't I don't know if you you probably can't see it on camera, but um the stag has some long legs.
- 55:20Gavin: Do you know what legs are in whiskey?
- 55:22Gavin: Um I pay for them every weekend.
- 55:25Gavin: Oh, good lord.
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: Uh Z Top's got a song about him.
- 55:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:31SPEAKER_03: Are you a ZZ Top fan?
- 55:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:34SPEAKER_03: Pretty much anything.
- 55:36SPEAKER_03: Texas rock and roll.
- 55:37SPEAKER_03: You can't go wrong with that.
- 55:39Gavin: I mean, rumor has it that some ZZ Top lived in Houston.
- 55:46Gavin: That's true fact.
- 55:47Gavin: That's true fact.
- 55:48Gavin: That's true fact, true fact.
- 55:49SPEAKER_03: Hell, my favorite sandwich shop is Antoine's.
- 55:52Gavin: Antoine's or Antone's?
- 55:54Gavin: No, it's Antoine's.
- 55:56Gavin: Antoine's.
- 55:56Gavin: Antoine's.
- 55:57Gavin: Okay.
- 55:58SPEAKER_03: It spelled right on the label.
- 55:59SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 55:59SPEAKER_03: I mean, they put a sticker on every sandwich.
- 56:01SPEAKER_03: You can't miss it.
- 56:02Gavin: I I heard I heard uh Christian's Tailgate in town used to be frequent and frequent and then didn't.
- 56:09SPEAKER_03: Them boys that go by?
- 56:11Gavin: Yeah.
- 56:12SPEAKER_03: The old one.
- 56:14SPEAKER_03: Christian's Tailgate's they got a they got a dripped burger.
- 56:18SPEAKER_03: You gotta be careful with a beer that size and a drippy burger.
- 56:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:22Gavin: It's delicious.
- 56:24Gavin: We should go sometime.
- 56:26Gavin: I feel like that's right up your alley.
- 56:28Gavin: Yeah, I can do that.
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 56:30SPEAKER_03: I can do that.
- 56:30SPEAKER_03: I I'm I'm a man that loves a tailgate.
- 56:34SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 56:35SPEAKER_03: I got the look of a man who loves a burger for sure.
- 56:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man.
- 56:39SPEAKER_03: I like I I try the try the stag.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I really like that.
- 56:44SPEAKER_03: I really like that cherry flavor on there.
- 56:47SPEAKER_03: I go back and try the Wolf Forester and I was like, man, but I do love meat some nanors.
- 56:52SPEAKER_03: Reminds me of uh grandma's Nanner pudding.
- 56:55SPEAKER_03: Nanor pudding.
- 56:57SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 56:58SPEAKER_03: With the Niller wafers on them.
- 57:00SPEAKER_03: Do you have any of that with you?
- 57:02SPEAKER_03: I am fresh out.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: Let me hold on, let me check my pockets.
- 57:06Gavin: Nope.
- 57:07Gavin: No, no, no, pudding in there.
- 57:09Gavin: No nanner pudding in there.
- 57:11Gavin: I don't I even if you did, I don't know if I'd want any.
- 57:14Gavin: You asked.
- 57:15Gavin: But I asked.
- 57:17Gavin: Um, all right.
- 57:19Gavin: So do you think that you could tell me uh after all of that, which one you would choose over another?
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: I'm just curious.
- 57:30SPEAKER_03: If we're just talking about sibling, I think I'd lean the 1920 from Old Forrester.
- 57:40SPEAKER_03: I think that banana, it's kind of dessert.
- 57:45SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 57:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 57:48SPEAKER_03: Not not to I feel bad.
- 57:51SPEAKER_03: I mean I mean, like if this has been a race, by a nose, like photo finish kind of.
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: Like a nose hair.
- 57:58SPEAKER_03: Maybe depends on if you trimmed it or not.
- 58:01SPEAKER_03: But that I mean that's close.
- 58:03SPEAKER_03: They're not they're not the same, but they're similar.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: Man, those are good.
- 58:12Gavin: I that is the beauty of whiskey, is they are not the same, but they're so close, but they're just enough different to really dive into the.
- 58:24SPEAKER_03: Like if it was a race, like, and this was like the this was the the stag, and then like the old forester ju just barely beats it.
- 58:34SPEAKER_03: And then over here, there's the I don't think they can see that anymore.
- 58:40SPEAKER_03: There's the wheeler.
- 58:41SPEAKER_03: No, no, there's uh yeah, but the I this is lying if I put it that close.
- 58:44SPEAKER_03: This like this was a race, these two are way back here.
- 58:47Gavin: Uh, I gotcha.
- 58:48SPEAKER_03: These two are over here, these are these are women.
- 58:50Gavin: And so you're saying those, the water beats those.
- 58:54Gavin: Just barely.
- 58:55Gavin: Just barely.
- 58:56Gavin: Just barely.
- 58:56Gavin: Okay.
- 58:57Gavin: It's got an earthy note to it.
- 58:58Gavin: An earthy, minerally note, right?
- 59:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's got some um what what we lovingly call the Houston funk.
- 59:06SPEAKER_03: The fluoride.
- 59:09SPEAKER_03: There's fluoride in there.
- 59:10SPEAKER_03: That's how they get you.
- 59:11Gavin: Yeah.
- 59:11Gavin: That's how they brainwash it.
- 59:13Gavin: Uh can't trust them.
- 59:16Gavin: Can't trust them.
- 59:17SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 59:18SPEAKER_03: I no, I have a question.
- 59:19SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 59:21SPEAKER_03: No, you're asking a lot of questions.
- 59:22SPEAKER_03: This is my turn.
- 59:23SPEAKER_03: My turn.
- 59:24SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 59:25SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 59:26SPEAKER_03: You you gave me alternates to both Weller and Stag, but we had a lot of bottles up here for me to pick from.
- 59:37SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 59:38SPEAKER_03: So my question would be if you can't get a hold of one of these, the other ones up here, what do you recommend a get?
- 59:51Gavin: It's a great question.
- 59:53Gavin: Um, and it's a question that I would say Aaron and I get asked fairly often about if you can't get this, what can you get?
- 1:00:00Gavin: Um, or if there's something special, but you want something just a little different than that, then, than what most people are hunting for, then what would you get?
- 1:00:12Gavin: So um let's start with blands because that is a name that is infamous.
- 1:00:19Gavin: Get the ponies, collect the ponies.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_03: It's a good, it's a good one.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_03: The problem is, the problem is they've been raising the price on it.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_03: I remember I remember when we first started getting in this, you you could find them for about$55,$60.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_03: And you could sell them for about$120 to$150.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_03: But now, if you find one, it's like$90.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_03: And so it's harder to sell them too because they're a little bit more available.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_03: So you're going from down from$150 to$120-ish.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_03: And it went up from 60 to 90.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_03: Like it has really pinched you in.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_03: It's pinching guys like me out of that market.
- 1:01:01Gavin: I'm not gonna justify the price increase, but I think back when it was$60, that was several years ago, and all prices have increased since then.
- 1:01:13Gavin: So I'm not gonna justify the price increase.
- 1:01:16Gavin: That's a government for you.
- 1:01:18Gavin: But I would say everything's basically increased in those years.
- 1:01:22Gavin: Um, but for Blanton's single barrel, original single barrel, I would say maybe like a four roses single barrel.
- 1:01:31Gavin: You know to the fun thing about four roses from actually being there is they talk a lot about their yeast strain and their mashed bills.
- 1:01:44Gavin: And I think the OBS V specifically single barrel um really is a good comp for that blends.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_03: All right, okay, gotcha, gotcha.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_03: All right, oh what about what about what about what about the staple Eagle Rare?
- 1:02:04Gavin: Eagle Rare.
- 1:02:05Gavin: So talking about the 10 year, right?
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's hard, it's a lot harder to get 12 now.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_03: Don't get me wrong, if you can get 12, get the 12.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_03: You can get a pretty penny for a 12.
- 1:02:16Gavin: Yeah, I mean, you're you may pay a pretty penny from old Chad here, but talking about um bourbons that are right around the same age range, so 10 years, you cannot go wrong with a Russell's reserve tin.
- 1:02:37Gavin: Aaron and I both are very big wild turkey fans.
- 1:02:41Gavin: And if you didn't know, Russell's reserve is a part of the wild turkey family, and so I would lean towards a Russell's reserve tent.
- 1:02:50Gavin: Gotcha, gotcha.
- 1:02:52Gavin: And then stepping up to the other uh top here.
- 1:02:57Gavin: That's a tough bottle to find right there.
- 1:02:59Gavin: This is a tough bottle.
- 1:03:01Gavin: Um, you can find the small batches around town fairly easy these days.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you I mean, I've known stores just have cases of a setting out here recently.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:12Gavin: Ain't no reason to get one of those.
- 1:03:14Gavin: At least in Houston, wherever you're watching, maybe not so much, but wait, you think people are watching from other places in Houston?
- 1:03:22Gavin: Yeah, like yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:24Gavin: We've got viewers on the globe.
- 1:03:26Gavin: We've got viewers that watch us overseas.
- 1:03:28Gavin: That's awesome.
- 1:03:29Gavin: Yeah, so welcome to the world.
- 1:03:32Gavin: Ah, world.
- 1:03:35Gavin: Um this guy right here, the Colonel E.
- 1:03:41Gavin: H.
- 1:03:41Gavin: Taylor, barrel proof.
- 1:03:44Gavin: I'm gonna say Elijah Craig barrel proof.
- 1:03:49Gavin: I think both of them pack a punch.
- 1:03:52Gavin: Um, the Noble Dram did a barrel pick of Elijah Craig, private barrel proof, and I think they match up very well.
- 1:04:01Gavin: Wait to wait.
- 1:04:03Gavin: I think they're great.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, them store picks are another good way to to jack that price up just a couple bucks, get you a couple more dollars.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's a little hit or miss.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_03: You need you need it to you need it to go hog wild.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_03: You need the world to just fall in love with it.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_03: And when you do, man, it's like winning the lottery.
- 1:04:25Gavin: What I would say is the Noble Dram has some wonderful picks, and we have wonderful palettes.
- 1:04:31Gavin: Mama, go give me some.
- 1:04:33Gavin: We will not steer you wrong.
- 1:04:34Gavin: That's what I gotta say.
- 1:04:35Gavin: All right.
- 1:04:36Gavin: Um, I'm maybe biased on that or not.
- 1:04:40Gavin: All right, understood.
- 1:04:41Gavin: So this bottle right here, Russell's Russell's 13.
- 1:04:46Gavin: Reserve 13.
- 1:04:47Gavin: So we talked about Russell's reserve a little bit for the Eagle Ray.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_03: Any anytime, anytime you get a number up over 10 on a Russell's dollar bills, y'all.
- 1:05:00Gavin: Yeah, I've I think you and I were buying some Russell's when we first met.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_03: So if I recall that first bottle we got when we went in the door, that was a 15.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_03: That was a 15, yeah.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was a day.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_03: That was a haul.
- 1:05:16Gavin: And I paid quite a bit.
- 1:05:19Gavin: Yeah.
- 1:05:20Gavin: Not on your side of the table, but on the house's side of the table.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm uh that that bottle, I think I had that one sold within 30 minutes of leaving the store, and I think I made about$250 profit on that bottle.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_03: What I was what here's a question.
- 1:05:37Gavin: That was worth my night.
- 1:05:39Gavin: Are you are you the kind of guy that takes the picture in the store, or do you wait till you get to the No, you don't want people in the store seeing you do?
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_03: You get out in the car, you kinda hold it down low so nobody sees it, right?
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_03: Uh uh.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_03: Snap the picture.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_03: Um the cross picture.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_03: I'm not I'm not that guy who's gotta make sure.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: The medallion in the center of a steering wheel and his fancy watch and his pretty leather seats are all in the picture.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_03: No, I'm here to sell bourbon to people who want bourbon.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_03: I'm not here selling a lifestyle.
- 1:06:16Gavin: I got you.
- 1:06:17Gavin: I got you.
- 1:06:18Gavin: That's good to know.
- 1:06:19Gavin: That's good to know.
- 1:06:20Gavin: So the Russell's reserve 13-year.
- 1:06:25Gavin: Talking about kind of that teenager on the whiskey side, I'm gonna I'm gonna steer you probably to like a like a knob creek 12-year.
- 1:06:40Gavin: Yeah.
- 1:06:41Gavin: Yeah.
- 1:06:43Gavin: I think that they're similar in age, they're one year's difference.
- 1:06:48Gavin: But we all know the age statement is only the youngest whiskey in the bottle.
- 1:06:57Gavin: It could be more.
- 1:07:00Gavin: And there was actually something with the I believe it was the Russell's 10, where they a few years ago, back basically the same time that we were, uh you and I had got the 15, that there was a bit of 15 or 13 in the Russell's 10.
- 1:07:18Gavin: Interesting.
- 1:07:19Gavin: Or just the Russell's Reserve General.
- 1:07:21Gavin: So you never know how old.
- 1:07:25Gavin: As you put that on the label, that'd help put that number up a little bit.
- 1:07:30Gavin: What I would say is I'm all about transparency, and I wish all brands would be as transparent with their whiskeys, hint hint.
- 1:07:41Gavin: And give us the mash bill, give us the year, give us all of those things because it it just gives you a little bit more as a consumer.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_03: And lower the price.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_03: And lower the price.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_03: And keep keep the volume low so that way guys like me can turn a profit.
- 1:07:57Gavin: Well, I don't know about that one, Chad, but you know, here we are.
- 1:08:02Gavin: So we ran the gauntlet of some of the most sought-after allocated bourbons currently out there in the market.
- 1:08:15Gavin: And then we matched them up, and I think that this is a very fun and fitting episode.
- 1:08:20Gavin: Um, first and foremost, this was a lot of fun.
- 1:08:23Gavin: Chad, I'm so glad that you made the trip out here.
- 1:08:27Gavin: Yeah.
- 1:08:27Gavin: I'm glad that we met.
- 1:08:29Gavin: It was a long haul.
- 1:08:31Gavin: But hey man, worth it.
- 1:08:33Gavin: I'm glad that's worth it.
- 1:08:35Gavin: I'm glad to be able to share some of our whiskey with you.
- 1:08:38Gavin: Um, you know, there is something about sitting down, sharing some whiskey with somebody that you completely disagree with everything that they do, but sharing a dram.
- 1:08:49Gavin: And there's no offense, Chad.
- 1:08:51Gavin: Uh you can disagree with anything I said.
- 1:08:53Gavin: Um, I I didn't lie.
- 1:08:55Gavin: You didn't lie.
- 1:08:56Gavin: I didn't lie.
- 1:08:57Gavin: You're very truthful and everything.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_03: 100% God's honest truth.
- 1:09:02Gavin: And that's why you and I have become buddies through this whole thing, even though we disagree pretty much in everything.
- 1:09:10Gavin: But what we do agree with is sitting down with each other, sharing a dram, and having a fun conversation.
- 1:09:17Gavin: So, Chad, thank you so much for being here tonight.
- 1:09:20Gavin: Thank you.
- 1:09:21Gavin: And since Aaron is not here, I'm going to do us the honors.
- 1:09:26Gavin: So, every episode, since you haven't watched a lot of them, I watch the shorts.
- 1:09:31Gavin: I ain't got time for full episodes.
- 1:09:33Gavin: All right, all right.
- 1:09:34Gavin: Well, what I would say You tend to be a little long-winded.
- 1:09:37Gavin: I would say go back and watch some of those episodes.
- 1:09:40Gavin: Uh it just makes all the difference to have full episodes being watched.
- 1:09:48Gavin: It allow and like and subscribe and follow.
- 1:09:51Gavin: It allows other whiskey lovers like us.
- 1:09:56Gavin: Aaron and I, I should say.

- 1:10:11Gavin: Me and the seven kids, we're gonna do it.
- 1:10:13Gavin: Get all the taters together, the hot tots, the tater tots, everything.
- 1:10:18Gavin: I'd be fun, tater tots.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, my I got some green kids.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_03: I guess they'd be tatered tots.
- 1:10:24Gavin: We we I would love all the taters to follow.
- 1:10:27Gavin: Like, subscribe, comment on this episode, because that is also very important to us.
- 1:10:33Gavin: We love to hear from everybody.
- 1:10:36Gavin: Um, so how Aaron and I typically sign off is I'll do cheers and slange, and then we're going to cheers each other with your favorite pour tonight.
- 1:10:46Gavin: Can you choose out of the four?
- 1:10:49Gavin: Which one you want to choose?
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_03: I just got I just got a little bit left.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_03: You got lucky.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_03: You got lucky.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_03: If you'd have dilly-dallied, we'd have been in trouble.
