• 2:12
Speaker 3: So you know, sometimes you have some issues here and there,
• 2:14
Speaker 3: but we are working our way through its. Coming up

Speaker 3: on the show this morning, we're going to talk to
• 2:20
Speaker 3: Rob Reel from her sister station ninety six to one KWS,
• 2:23
Speaker 3: who's now our neighbor just down the hall from us.
• 2:25
Speaker 3: As we're down sort of in the basement, I guess
• 2:28
Speaker 3: here at eleven eleven, Rob Reel is going to be
• 2:32
Speaker 3: walking from Charleston to Morgantown. Why is he walking? I
• 2:36
Speaker 3: know we have a station vehicle, I've seen it. Why
• 2:38
Speaker 3: is he walking? Well, let's raise money for WVU Children's
• 2:42
Speaker 3: and I'll let Rob tell you the whole story and
• 2:43
Speaker 3: what the heck made him think. You know what, this
• 2:45
Speaker 3: is a good idea, let's walk to Morgantown from Charleston.
• 2:48
Speaker 3: Now he's going to get into that, I think next week.
• 2:50
Speaker 3: So we'll talk to Rob about that coming up a
• 2:52
Speaker 3: little bit later on the show. Also, State Revenue Sery

• 3:10
Speaker 3: is an event going on this Saturday, and I think
• 3:13
Speaker 3: our sister station of E one hundred is going to
• 3:15
Speaker 3: be heavily involved in. It's called We Care West Virginia.
• 3:18
Speaker 3: Anngie Settle from Health Right is helping organize it. She
• 3:21
Speaker 3: is here. She joins us this morning in the Parmar
• 3:23
Speaker 3: Store studio along with doctor Chris Stansbury of West Virginia.
• 3:26
Speaker 3: I consultants walking to the show. Both of you, thank you,
• 3:29
Speaker 3: and I don't need to I probably need to turn.
• 3:32
Speaker 3: I think this is your mike. We're still learning as
• 3:33
Speaker 3: we go. Speak for me again, Angie, Hello, there we go,
• 3:37
Speaker 3: There we go, There we go. You were fine, Chris,
• 3:39
Speaker 3: Angie was just a little bit low, okay, but we
• 3:41
Speaker 3: got to take in care allay. So what exactly is
• 3:45
Speaker 3: West Virginia Care Day? What exactly this whole thing about?
• 3:48
Speaker 5: So since twenty sixteen, we have been involved in. Doctor
• 3:51
Speaker 5: Stansbury has been great doctor Tom Tacubo as well, to
• 3:54
Speaker 5: do a great event once a year. We've been doing
• 3:58
Speaker 5: it at the Bible Center with Remote Area Medical Center,
• 4:02
Speaker 5: but we've gotten so big that they even said this year, hey, guys,
• 4:06
Speaker 5: I think you can do something on your own. So
• 4:08
Speaker 5: it's a one day event where we do totally free medical, dental,
• 4:13
Speaker 5: vision care. People will even get you know, we don't
• 4:16
Speaker 5: have eyeglasses on site, but we'll be ordering out glasses
• 4:19
Speaker 5: for everybody free of charge. But it's just an event
• 4:22
Speaker 5: for people to come and get healthcare with no questions
• 4:25
  Speaker 5: to ask.
• 4:25
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 4:25
Speaker 5: We know there's copays and deductibles and everything that stand
• 4:28
Speaker 5: in the way, and this is a great event where
• 4:31
Speaker 5: we have people, great volunteers like doctor Stansbaby. They're coming
• 4:34
Speaker 5: in given of their time and just basically a day
• 4:38
Speaker 5: where West Virginians help other West Virginians.
• 4:40
Speaker 3: Understands we let's talk to you about this. I mean,
• 4:44
Speaker 3: why exactly are you involved in this? Well?
• 4:46
Speaker 7: Coming out of the twenty sixteen flood, we saw tremendous
• 4:49
Speaker 7: need in our part of the states and across the state.
• 4:52
Speaker 7: Just the utter devastation that some people face, they lost
• 4:55
Speaker 7: their dentures, they lost their glasses, they lost their medications,
• 4:58
Speaker 7: they lost everything. And Angie had a great idea. She said,
• 5:01
Speaker 7: let's set up a clinic where we can take care
• 5:03
Speaker 7: of these people and really just you know, reach out
• 5:06
Speaker 7: in the community and do whatever we can to help
• 5:07
Speaker 7: in that hour of need. And what we found is
• 5:09
Speaker 7: that that hour need never stopped. That those people are
• 5:12
Speaker 7: out there, and there are people each and every year
• 5:15
Speaker 7: that come into the clinic for the first time and
• 5:17
Speaker 7: just say thank you so much. You know, I can't
• 5:18
Speaker 7: afford me occasions. I can't afford to go out and
• 5:20
Speaker 7: get a new pair of glasses. My glasses are eight
• 5:22
Speaker 7: years old and they're falling apart. You know, whatever the
• 5:24
Speaker 7: need may be, it's it's just an awesome opportunity to
• 5:28
Speaker 7: reach out to those West Virginians in need. And there's
• 5:29
  Speaker 7: there's a lot.
• 5:30
Speaker 8: Of folks out there that need it.
• 5:31
Speaker 3: And you've been doing this, as you said, This kind
• 5:33
Speaker 3: of came came about as part of the flood recovery
• 5:36
Speaker 3: a few years ago. And I know for a fact
• 5:39
Speaker 3: that this thing has been heavily, heavily it's in it
• 5:41
Speaker 3: because there's no questions asked. I mean, you just show
• 5:43
Speaker 3: up and you get and you get then you get services.
• 5:45
Speaker 3: Give either one of you or maybe both of you.
• 5:47
Speaker 3: Give me a success story. I mean not a name obviously,
• 5:50
Speaker 3: but somebody, uh, just a situation where you able to
• 5:53
Speaker 3: help somebody in the past.
• 5:54
Speaker 5: He's got a great one where he diagnosed somebody with
• 5:57
Speaker 5: a cancer. So go ahead and tell him.
• 5:59
Speaker 7: Yeah, we have a gentleman come in who was just
• 6:01
Speaker 7: looking for new glasses. He had no idea that he
• 6:04
Speaker 7: had anything serious going on in the back of the eyes,
• 6:05
Speaker 7: but when we took a look back there, we diagnosed
• 6:08
Speaker 7: him with a rare form of cancer called coroidal melanoma,
• 6:12
Speaker 7: and if left untreated, it can metastasize or spread places
• 6:16
Speaker 7: like the liver, the lungs, and it can be fatal.
• 6:19
Speaker 7: And so fortunately for this gentleman he came into the clinic,
• 6:21
Speaker 7: we were able to get him referred out to one
• 6:22
Speaker 7: of our local retina specialists who was able to treat
• 6:25
Speaker 7: the cancer with a radioactive plaque, get that thing to
• 6:28
Speaker 7: shrivel up and die, and thankfully save his life. And
• 6:31
Speaker 7: he came back in a couple of years ago and
• 6:34
Speaker 7: just expressed his gratitude and said, thank you so much.
• 6:36
Speaker 7: You know, we just appreciate what y'all do here. So
• 6:38
Speaker 7: just beautiful stories like that where people you know, don't
• 6:40
Speaker 7: even know they have an issue, haven't been checked in
• 6:42
Speaker 7: years and we're able to discover something serious, get it
• 6:45
Speaker 7: taken care of and make a difference in there.
• 6:46
Speaker 5: There was a family that came in actually I think
• 6:48
Speaker 5: it was like six, six or eight. They had like
• 6:50
Speaker 5: six kids, and seven of them left with glasses. Like
• 6:54
Speaker 5: mom and six kids, they all left with glasses.
• 6:57
Speaker 3: The lift with glasses that day, Yes, yes, with.
• 7:00
Speaker 5: Its promoter and medical center, they did have an on
• 7:02
Speaker 5: site like a mobile glass making machine. We haven't gotten
• 7:05
Speaker 5: that high tech unless you can find somebody that wants
• 7:07
Speaker 5: to donate, you know, like some money to us and
• 7:09
Speaker 5: we can buy one of those. But we do have
• 7:11
Speaker 5: a relationship with a group where we will actually order
• 7:15
Speaker 5: those glasses. They'll come in and then we'll you know,
• 7:17
Speaker 5: mail them to patients, have those patients pick them up
• 7:20
Speaker 5: so they we'll get free glasses, but they just will
• 7:22
Speaker 5: get them that day.
• 7:22
Speaker 3: Talking again about this big event that's happening this weekend
• 7:25
Speaker 3: with Chris Stansberry and Angie Saidtle of Health Right the
• 7:28
Speaker 3: Day Island Show in five Itty Live broade to you
• 7:29
Speaker 3: a part by Husband's Pizza this month is your favorite
• 7:32
Speaker 3: Hustans get a large et n inch Pepperoni pizza and
• 7:34
Speaker 3: an eight inch chocolate chip cookie only twenty three ninety nine.
• 7:37
Speaker 3: Let's talk about the buy in from the community. We
• 7:39
Speaker 3: know that the people that need the services guys show up,
• 7:42
Speaker 3: but let's talk about the sponsors or people that get
• 7:46
Speaker 3: involved or something like that, or just the community in
• 7:49
Speaker 3: general hoping to spread the word.
• 7:50
Speaker 5: I will tell you he couldn't be here today. He's
• 7:52
Speaker 5: a busy guy. But can't say enough good about Doctor
• 7:55
Speaker 5: Tom Tacubo. He has been with us every year. He's
• 7:59
Speaker 5: our medical doctor, Michael Tuta, he's our dental lead for this.
• 8:04
Speaker 5: And they're volunteers. These are regular volunteers at West Virginia
• 8:07
Speaker 5: Health right and we have about one hundred and fifty
• 8:09
Speaker 5: people signed up to volunteer this Saturday. Actually, you mentioned
• 8:16
Speaker 5: Larry Pack. He and his wife are like presenting sponsors
• 8:19
Speaker 5: for this event, high Marked Blue Cross, Blue Shield. We
• 8:22
Speaker 5: have a whole list of sponsors, but those two are
• 8:24
Speaker 5: the presenting sponsors high Mark Blue Cross, Blue Shield and
• 8:28
Speaker 5: Larry and Lisa Pack so very supportive of our clinic.
• 8:32
Speaker 5: We can't do what we do without having all of
• 8:34
Speaker 5: our sponsors on board because they help, you know, cover
• 8:37
Speaker 5: all the costs of this stuff. We're free and charitable clinics,
• 8:39
Speaker 5: so there's a lot of costs involved.
• 8:41
Speaker 3: Now, well, now we're Tuesday, guys, we're looking at this
• 8:43
Speaker 3: event this weekend. It's people are listening right now. They say, well,
• 8:46
Speaker 3: i'd like to get involved as far as a sponsorship
• 8:49
Speaker 3: or I'd like to make a donation or something like that.
• 8:51
Speaker 3: Can you do that at this point?
• 8:52
Speaker 5: Sure, they can just call my office. It's three oh
• 8:55
Speaker 5: four four one four five nine three one. That's directly
• 8:59
Speaker 5: to my extent. We would love to have volunteers and
• 9:03
Speaker 5: you know, donations is great, but as far as patients,
• 9:06
Speaker 5: the doors will open at eight o'clock. You know, that's
• 9:09
Speaker 5: one of the things that we change. We love Remoteary Medical,
• 9:11
Speaker 5: but it was a real standard that they do these
• 9:14
Speaker 5: across the board that you know, they would give tickets
• 9:16
Speaker 5: out at like three am and doors would open at
• 9:18
Speaker 5: six am, so you have people out, you know, really early.
• 9:21
Speaker 5: So we're trying to tweak it a little bit, make
• 9:23
Speaker 5: it a little more friendly in terms of hours, so
• 9:25
Speaker 5: patients will come in at eight am and we'll go
• 9:29
Speaker 5: through five pm. Next year it may be two days.
• 9:30
Speaker 5: We went with one day. This year. We had to
• 9:32
Speaker 5: pick our own name. So basically it's the same event
• 9:34
Speaker 5: we've been doing every year, but it'll be at our
• 9:36
Speaker 5: East End clinic because we've we've doubled the size of
• 9:39
Speaker 5: it and we can do everything on site now, so in
• 9:42
Speaker 5: extended services, so we have the full pharmacy there. We're
• 9:45
Speaker 5: going to be doing you know, HIV, happetitus CEA, testing, vaccines,
• 9:49
Speaker 5: the whole nine yards there.
• 9:50
Speaker 3: So and what about volunteers, people just to help out?
• 9:54
Speaker 3: I mean, because I would imagine with an event like this, Chris,
• 9:57
Speaker 3: you got to have somebody to do. We do do
• 10:00
Speaker 3: traffic control, yes, somebody to keep people in line and
• 10:03
Speaker 3: that sort of thing. Do you need it? Because I'm thinking,
• 10:05
Speaker 3: and I always bring this up because I know that
• 10:07
Speaker 3: in order and I always bring this up to parents
• 10:09
Speaker 3: and grandparents that in order to graduate, uh in public
• 10:12
Speaker 3: school in West Virginia, you have to do so much
• 10:15
Speaker 3: community service. I'm thinking this would be a great event
• 10:18
Speaker 3: for for local high school kids to come, or church
• 10:21
Speaker 3: groups or or or civic organizations, your rotaries kowanas whatever.
• 10:25
Speaker 3: Do you still need people like, they.
• 10:26
Speaker 5: Can call me. But it's also good to we care
• 10:28
Speaker 5: West Virginia. I think it's dot org. It could be
• 10:32
  Speaker 5: dot com.
• 10:33
Speaker 3: We'll try one or the other, one or the other.
• 10:35
Speaker 3: I've actually got the graphic posted on my social media
• 10:38
Speaker 3: and Dave alland radio, so it may be on there,
• 10:40
  Speaker 3: but on.
• 10:41
Speaker 5: The other volunteers, it's gonna and what's fun, we try
• 10:43
Speaker 5: to make it. You know, it's w homecoming day, so
• 10:46
Speaker 5: we've got like a little tailgate behind the scenes theme
• 10:49
Speaker 5: for volunteers to feed our you know, volunteers have a
• 10:52
Speaker 5: big screen with pregame pregame stuff if you're like my boys,
• 10:55
Speaker 5: a pregame all day.
• 10:56
Speaker 3: Yeah, because the games at night, right, Yeah, but.
• 10:59
Speaker 5: We're gonna feed people well, you know, like wings and
• 11:01
Speaker 5: stuff and oh yeah, you know, do whatever it is
• 11:03
Speaker 5: you do on game day.
• 11:04
Speaker 3: All right, give us all the details again, the winds
• 11:06
Speaker 3: and the wares and the hours and everything started to
• 11:08
  Speaker 3: take from.
• 11:08
Speaker 5: The Saturday, the nineteenth at West Virginia Health Rates East
• 11:13
Speaker 5: End Clinic. It's fifteen twenty Washington Street East. We're right
• 11:16
Speaker 5: beside a tutors. Most people don't know where anything is
• 11:18
Speaker 5: in West Virginia. But they know where Tutors is.
• 11:21
Speaker 3: We know landmarks in West Virginia.
• 11:22
Speaker 5: That's right. And again it's just come. No questions. I
• 11:26
Speaker 5: asked though, we're not going to ask you about income
• 11:28
Speaker 5: or insurance or anything, and we just asked that you come.
• 11:31
Speaker 5: You might have to have a little patience, maybe a
• 11:33
Speaker 5: little bit of way, but we have great docs like
• 11:36
Speaker 5: doctor Stansbury going to be there doing e exams and
• 11:38
Speaker 5: great you know dentist, doctor Takubo coming, and just everybody
• 11:42
Speaker 5: that's coming is there because they want to be there.
• 11:44
Speaker 5: They're volunteers. And again my favorite saying is it's about
• 11:47
Speaker 5: West Virginians helping West Virginians. And I love that event
• 11:51
Speaker 5: because it shows our heart.
• 11:53
Speaker 3: All right, and you settle from health right, Chris Stansbury,
• 11:55
Speaker 3: you wanted any any follow up words from you?
• 11:57
Speaker 7: No, I just can't say enough. You know thing, thanks
• 12:00
Speaker 7: to all of our volunteers. The more volunteers we have,
• 12:02
Speaker 7: the more people we can see it, the more people
• 12:03
Speaker 7: we can help, the more lives we can touch.
• 12:06
Speaker 3: And weather looks great too. I'm always keeping on the weather.
• 12:08
Speaker 3: Weather looks good this weekend too.
• 12:10
Speaker 7: So as as you mentioned, that's our can do spirit
• 12:12
Speaker 7: here in West Virginia's.
• 12:13
Speaker 5: Helper and that's how we decide how many we can see. Basically,
• 12:16
Speaker 5: if we get like a lot of volunteers for a specialty,
• 12:19
Speaker 5: we can see more people. So we gauge in on
• 12:21
Speaker 5: that how many we can see that day based on
• 12:22
Speaker 5: how many volunteers do we get, So we're always happy
• 12:24
Speaker 5: to have more volunteers.
• 12:25
Speaker 3: All right, guys, I appreciate you being here. It's a great,
• 12:28
Speaker 3: great event. We helped you promote it last year and
• 12:30
Speaker 3: as I said, I think our sister Seition V one
• 12:32
Speaker 3: hundred is going to be a big part of it.
• 12:33
Speaker 3: I know that Steve was talking about it earlier. Appreciate
• 12:36
Speaker 3: you guys being here. And that's luck with everything on Saturday.
• 12:39
Speaker 3: If you need anything between now and then reach out
• 12:41
Speaker 3: and we'll get it on the air for you. Chris

• 16:36
Speaker 8: All right, at least forgot it when figured it out.
• 16:38
  Speaker 3: Every time, It's a like I said before, I was
• 16:41
Speaker 3: telling them I said, you know, when you are in
• 16:43
Speaker 3: the same place for a long long time, radio stations
• 16:45
Speaker 3: are hard to move. I don't know whether people a
• 16:48
Speaker 3: radio television, they're hard to move, especially when you're trying
• 16:51
Speaker 3: to stay on there the whole time. But I can
• 16:53
Speaker 3: in the and the cruise just done a fantastic job.
• 16:55
Speaker 8: So look forward to seeing the new studio.
• 16:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, the next time. Possibly, I don't know when you'll
• 17:00
Speaker 3: be on again. We may be on television.
• 17:02
  Speaker 8: Oh great, great?
• 17:03
Speaker 3: And you you always are ready for television.
• 17:05
  Speaker 8: Shore always ready.
• 17:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it'll be just like copies. Please. All right,
• 17:09
Speaker 3: So let's break this down and keep it simple for
• 17:12
Speaker 3: people like me. Okay, So we have a compromise now
• 17:15
Speaker 3: between the governor and the legislature of the special session
• 17:18
Speaker 3: was held last week. What was originally a five percent
• 17:21
Speaker 3: tax increase or a decrease, I'm sorry, was what was wanted.
• 17:25
Speaker 3: Now it's two percent. Your thoughts on the compromise.
• 17:27
Speaker 12: Well, I think that's it's how system works, right, you know,
• 17:29
Speaker 12: the government proposes. He really wanted to five percent. He
• 17:32
Speaker 12: he wanted to continue to move us forward. U. The
• 17:35
Speaker 12: let's staysure is a little bit more hesitant. We spent
• 17:37
Speaker 12: we spent about three months doing a deep dive on
• 17:40
Speaker 12: the finances of the state, and again from a governor standpoint,
• 17:44
Speaker 12: I think from a revenue standpoint, we felt very comfortable
• 17:47
Speaker 12: with five percent, but you know, government is the art
• 17:49
Speaker 12: of compromise. We felt that like, if we could get
• 17:51
Speaker 12: the two percent plus getting getting the shock here tax credit,
• 17:56
Speaker 12: that was a good day's work. So we're very, very
• 17:58
Speaker 12: pleased that we could reach agreement with with the legislature
• 18:01
Speaker 12: and very pleased that we can reduce the tax burden
• 18:04
  Speaker 12: on our citizens.
• 18:04
Speaker 3: And I think you would be the first to admit
• 18:07
Speaker 3: and I'm not trying to bring up anything any bad
• 18:09
Speaker 3: subjects here a secretary, but there's sometimes on certain issues,
• 18:13
Speaker 3: been a little bit of a disconnect between the legislature
• 18:16
Speaker 3: and the governor. This is something that they were able
• 18:18
Speaker 3: to work together on. I heard everybody seemed to be
• 18:20
Speaker 3: smiling and kind of got through it.
• 18:22
Speaker 12: There's always tension, different different aspects, different perspectives. So there's
• 18:26
Speaker 12: one hundred and thirty four legislators, there's one governor, and
• 18:30
Speaker 12: so what the governor has to do and what our
• 18:33
Speaker 12: challenge was, then Governor gave us the challenge is to
• 18:35
Speaker 12: work with the legislature to come up with a compromise,
• 18:38
Speaker 12: to come up with a legislation that we can pass.
• 18:41
Speaker 12: And it's really just another step on what the governor
• 18:43
Speaker 12: and what we've been working on every really since my
• 18:45
Speaker 12: tenure there, which is to reduce the tax burden on
• 18:47
Speaker 12: citizens of West Virginia. So we're well north of a
• 18:51
Speaker 12: billion dollars over the last couple of years, last two
• 18:53
Speaker 12: and a half years' something. I know the governor's real
• 18:56
Speaker 12: proud of. I'm very proud to have a part of that,
• 18:58
Speaker 12: and I know the legislature is all so proud. We're
• 19:01
Speaker 12: continuing to march forward. We want to be competitive with
• 19:03
Speaker 12: other states. We want to no longer be an outlier.
• 19:06
Speaker 12: We're still higher than our surrounding station personal income tax,
• 19:09
Speaker 12: but we're making steps toward that goal.
• 19:12
Speaker 3: So break it down. What does this mean to the
• 19:13
Speaker 3: average person? I mean the average person. I mean, and
• 19:16
Speaker 3: I know there's no such thing as average per se,
• 19:18
  Speaker 3: but just I'm a you know, a homeowner, got a
• 19:22
Speaker 3: job living here in the Kanaal Valley. What does what's
• 19:24
Speaker 3: this going to make that?
• 19:25
Speaker 12: I think the way I look at to try to
• 19:27
Speaker 12: make it look simple, I was talking to my family members,
• 19:31
Speaker 12: is that over the last two and a half years,
• 19:33
Speaker 12: the governor of the legislature has reduced your personal income
• 19:36
Speaker 12: tax burden by about twenty six percent, roughly twenty six percent.
• 19:40
Speaker 12: So whatever you are paying in twenty twenty three, you're
• 19:44
Speaker 12: now paying twenty for about twenty six percent less at
• 19:48
Speaker 12: this time. And that's going to be different for every
• 19:49
Speaker 12: tax payer, no matter where you're at. But also, you know,
• 19:52
Speaker 12: in just the top level, we've also we now have
• 19:55
Speaker 12: a childcare tax credit we didn't have before that's going
• 19:58
Speaker 12: to help working, working family. Most of the conversation back
• 20:01
Speaker 12: in the legislative session was for folks at the lower
• 20:04
Speaker 12: income scale. We're no longer taxing sociecurity benefits. That's something
• 20:10
Speaker 12: new and something that we've worked on for a lot
• 20:12
Speaker 12: of years. As far as the Republican Party that we're
• 20:14
Speaker 12: very proud of. We've got tax credits for veterans, so
• 20:17
Speaker 12: a lot of different tax credits, a lot of different
• 20:19
Speaker 12: ways that we're reducing the personal income tax burden for citizens.
• 20:23
Speaker 12: But it's accumulation, and again, you just got to continue
• 20:27
Speaker 12: to march forward and look forward to the next administration.
• 20:30
Speaker 12: I really do believe that Attorney General Morrisey, soon to
• 20:33
Speaker 12: be Governor Morsey will pick up that man on run
• 20:34
  Speaker 12: with it.
• 20:35
Speaker 3: Taking State Revenue Secretary Larry Pack the Dave Island showing
• 20:38
Speaker 3: five Indie Live broad to part by your hometown baseball team,
• 20:40
Speaker 3: the Charleston Dirty Birds, Birds and our sister station. What
• 20:43
Speaker 3: it was seven three to beat to invite you to
• 20:44
Speaker 3: go Mark Ballpark Thursday, the twenty fourth for Trick or
• 20:47
Speaker 3: Beat presented by Selango Law. There'll be two sessions, one
• 20:50
Speaker 3: at six o'clock, the other starting at seven thirty. Keep
• 20:52
Speaker 3: in mind it is free, but you must have a ticket.
• 20:55
Speaker 3: You must must have a ticket to get your kids admitted.
• 20:58
Speaker 3: Tickets are available at our studios eleven to eleven Virginia
• 21:01
Speaker 3: Streetd's and Charleston during normal business hours. Have a text
• 21:03
Speaker 3: of the show here. Secretary says, where specifically will the
• 21:06
Speaker 3: cuts come from? Uh in in the DHS. Surely with
• 21:10
Speaker 3: the deep dive they know specifically where the funds could
• 21:12
  Speaker 3: be taken from.
• 21:13
Speaker 12: I think it's one of the interesting things about the conversation,
• 21:16
Speaker 12: and I'll kind of back up a little bit that
• 21:19
Speaker 12: a lot of the conversation came came from last week
• 21:23
Speaker 12: or the last two or three months. How do you
• 21:25
Speaker 12: do it? How do you do it? And to put
• 21:26
Speaker 12: in perspective, we're only talking about two percent roughly of
• 21:30
Speaker 12: the of the general fund budget. That's all we're talking about.
• 21:33
Speaker 12: Two percent cut is something that that households have dealt
• 21:37
Speaker 12: have dealt with over over the years, and they know
• 21:39
Speaker 12: how to do it. Businesses know how to cut two percent.
• 21:42
Speaker 12: So the idea that we can't ring ring out two
• 21:45
Speaker 12: percent of the state budget is you know, it's kind
• 21:49
Speaker 12: of you know, it's an understatement of me. We can
• 21:52
Speaker 12: get it from a myriad of choices, a myriad of
• 21:54
Speaker 12: different ways, and so we're looking at all the different
• 21:57
Speaker 12: options and different ways to do it. But again, it's
• 21:59
Speaker 12: just two cents on the dollar. And the only way
• 22:01
Speaker 12: that we can't come up with two cents a dollar
• 22:03
Speaker 12: is if you believe that the state government is so
• 22:06
Speaker 12: efficient and so organized that they can't reduce two percent.
• 22:11
Speaker 12: So it'll come from all across the budget. We do
• 22:14
Speaker 12: know from there's different departments we've reorganized. We'll be able
• 22:18
Speaker 12: to get some money out of there. We've continued, the
• 22:20
Speaker 12: governors continue to put forth flat budgets, and most departments, well,
• 22:25
Speaker 12: we are starting to work on the budget that we
• 22:27
Speaker 12: will hand off to Governor Morrisey somewhere around Thanksgiving. Then
• 22:30
Speaker 12: that gives him about sixty days to do his part.
• 22:32
Speaker 12: So we feel very confident about it. We don't have
• 22:35
Speaker 12: this specific exactly where, but again, coming up with two percent,
• 22:39
  Speaker 12: we don't think.
• 22:39
Speaker 8: It's going to be much of a challenge.
• 22:41
Speaker 3: Talk about overall revenue, I mean, we hear all these numbers,
• 22:44
Speaker 3: and every month, you know, new reports come out of
• 22:46
Speaker 3: your office and out of the government that says, this
• 22:48
Speaker 3: is how we're doing. We're so much over budget or
• 22:51
Speaker 3: under budget. It kind of varies month to month. Just
• 22:54
Speaker 3: talk about West Virginia as a whole, as that you're
• 22:56
Speaker 3: a numbers guy, budget guide. Tell me how we're doing overall.
• 23:00
Speaker 12: Well, really, we've we have came through uh a season
• 23:03
Speaker 12: over the last four or five years that is just
• 23:05
Speaker 12: absolutely extraordinary. So so the state government has have have
• 23:08
Speaker 12: had budget surpluses in the neighborhood of four billion dollars.
• 23:12
Speaker 12: That means that we've basically taken four billion dollars more
• 23:15
Speaker 12: from our tax payers and we really need to rent
• 23:17
  Speaker 12: to run government.
• 23:18
  Speaker 5: Now.
• 23:18
Speaker 12: A lot of that money has been spent on what
• 23:20
Speaker 12: we what what's called one time expenditures and to where
• 23:23
Speaker 12: it's economic development, where it's rehabbing some buildings, some stuff
• 23:27
Speaker 12: on healthcare. But we've had an extraordinary run and I
• 23:30
Speaker 12: think for that reason, government's really had a good run,
• 23:34
Speaker 12: and government's been well funded over the last four years. H.
• 23:37
Speaker 12: Now it's time for the government to kind of tighten
• 23:38
Speaker 12: your belts a little bit. And so so we feel
• 23:40
Speaker 12: very good about it. We're we're on track to meet
• 23:43
Speaker 12: our revenue estimates for this year. Uh, we've we believe
• 23:47
Speaker 12: very confidently that we're going to beat those revenue budgets.
• 23:50
  Speaker 6: Uh.
• 23:50
Speaker 12: We've only been through three months of the other fiscal years,
• 23:52
Speaker 12: so we're just kind of getting started.
• 23:54
  Speaker 5: Uh.
• 23:54
Speaker 12: We we have a lot more confidence confidence confidence once
• 23:58
Speaker 12: we get through about six months. But we feel good Westernia.
• 24:01
Speaker 12: The colony has been diversifying. That's something the governor's worked on,
• 24:03
Speaker 12: is something the legislator's worked on really even longer than
• 24:05
Speaker 12: the governor's been there. We're seeing the results of that.
• 24:08
Speaker 12: So we feel very very confident going forward.
• 24:10
Speaker 3: And it always it hasn't always been this way in
• 24:12
Speaker 3: West Virginia if you go back over the decades, and
• 24:15
Speaker 3: it doesn't matter whether there we've had budget issues, whether
• 24:17
Speaker 3: it's a Republican or Democrat occupying the governor's mansion. So
• 24:20
Speaker 3: it's not necessarily, you know, a partisan thing. We've just
• 24:23
Speaker 3: had issues over the years, and so it's it's good
• 24:26
Speaker 3: to have some good news.
• 24:27
  Speaker 8: It really is.
• 24:28
Speaker 12: And again, I think so much of it is the
• 24:30
Speaker 12: discipline that the legislation governors had over a number of
• 24:32
Speaker 12: years to produce relatively fact budgets, which another way of saying,
• 24:37
Speaker 12: to produce budgets where there's margin at the end, so
• 24:40
Speaker 12: there's margins if you either missed your revenue as miss
• 24:42
Speaker 12: there's margins so that you're able to do one time spends.
• 24:45
Speaker 12: And again when government collects a dollar, if they got
• 24:47
Speaker 12: three or four choices, we can we can save it,
• 24:49
Speaker 12: we can we can spend it, or we can give
• 24:51
Speaker 12: it back. So that fiscal discipline, which I think is
• 24:54
Speaker 12: something that West Virginians understand, they practice at their homes,
• 24:57
Speaker 12: they practice in their businesses, is something that we been
• 25:00
Speaker 12: exhibiting and that will do us good going forward. But
• 25:03
Speaker 12: I think the other thing is is just perspective and
• 25:05
Speaker 12: and what what people I think sometimes under the dome
• 25:07
Speaker 12: forget is that our tax payers work really really hard
• 25:11
Speaker 12: to pay these taxes and fees, uh and and so
• 25:14
Speaker 12: and these people that are paying the taxes and fees,
• 25:16
Speaker 12: by and large, they don't have lobbyists. They're not in
• 25:19
Speaker 12: the they're not in the under the dome. They're working,
• 25:21
Speaker 12: they're raising their families, and so so much of what
• 25:24
Speaker 12: we're trying to do is iss changed. The perspective is
• 25:28
Speaker 12: does the government really need this money?
• 25:30
  Speaker 8: Is this?
• 25:30
Speaker 12: Is this really a good idea? Is this something really
• 25:32
Speaker 12: has to be done? Because we get a lot of
• 25:34
Speaker 12: people with once coming to the to the state House,
• 25:37
Speaker 12: we're trying to knock it down the needs do you
• 25:39
Speaker 12: really do you really need it? And again, so much
• 25:42
Speaker 12: of what we're trying to do, it's just changing perspective
• 25:44
Speaker 12: of our folks that shop at Walmart, the folks who
• 25:47
Speaker 12: graduate from high school, they work hard for to pay
• 25:50
Speaker 12: their taxes. We want to make sure we don't take
• 25:51
Speaker 12: any more than it's necessary.
• 25:53
Speaker 3: How does the future look for West Virginia And Larry
• 25:55
  Speaker 3: Pack's opinion.
• 25:56
Speaker 12: I am very bullish on West Virginia. I'm able to
• 26:00
Speaker 12: from my vantage point working for the governor, working in
• 26:02
Speaker 12: the Governor's office is to see the economic drivers that
• 26:06
Speaker 12: are coming into West Virginia, the different businesses that are
• 26:08
Speaker 12: expanding that want to be in West Virginia. So all
• 26:11
Speaker 12: the work that's happened over the last ten or twelve
• 26:13
Speaker 12: years just really starting to pay off again.
• 26:16
  Speaker 8: From an Eastern.
• 26:16
Speaker 12: Panhandle on Northern Panhandle in north central just a tremendous
• 26:20
Speaker 12: amount of growth, tremendous amount of potential there. I was
• 26:23
Speaker 12: at New Corp yesterday. I've never been on a construction
• 26:26
Speaker 12: site that had a thousand men or women that were
• 26:28
Speaker 12: working to build, and the scale of it was just
• 26:31
Speaker 12: absolutely extraordinary. The communications, the coordination of getting that done
• 26:37
Speaker 12: is just phenomenal. That will change, absolutely transformed that part
• 26:40
Speaker 12: of the state. So very very excited about that. But
• 26:43
Speaker 12: there's a lot of smaller projects like new Coreps going in.
• 26:47
Speaker 12: We're going to really see the benefits and it all
• 26:49
Speaker 12: comes down to jobs, and we have jobs, will have growth.
• 26:53
Speaker 12: The only concern we have is where I grew up
• 26:56
Speaker 12: and where you grew up in the southern coal fields.
• 26:59
Speaker 12: So we're still straggling down there, which you're looking for opportunities.
• 27:02
Speaker 12: We have some things we think people may want to
• 27:04
Speaker 12: go down there to great jobs, but uh, you know,
• 27:07
Speaker 12: the the the the war against coal has absolutely ravaged.
• 27:12
  Speaker 8: Southern West Virginia.
• 27:14
Speaker 12: Uh. Again, I think that's one of the reasons why
• 27:16
Speaker 12: this election coming up in three weeks from today is
• 27:18
Speaker 12: so so important. Uh So at least we can stem
• 27:20
Speaker 12: uh you know, to kind of stop the war, maybe
• 27:23
Speaker 12: pushed back a little bit and get some of these
• 27:24
Speaker 12: coal mines back in operations.
• 27:26
Speaker 3: And I have talked to those that are running for
• 27:28
Speaker 3: office again, uh and those that are also in office
• 27:31
Speaker 3: as well. We are seeing some incredible economic growth in
• 27:33
Speaker 3: West Virginia. You mentioned New Core, and I live in
• 27:35
Speaker 3: Putnam County. I'm seeing what's going on there right now,
• 27:38
Speaker 3: eastern Panhandle. But we got to figure out how to
• 27:41
Speaker 3: how to make sure that the rest of the state,
• 27:43
Speaker 3: the southern West Virginia's and the other areas that how
• 27:47
Speaker 3: they how they can also get a piece of the
• 27:49
  Speaker 3: pie as well.
• 27:49
  Speaker 12: Yeah, And that's a balance, that's a dance that has
• 27:51
Speaker 12: to happen in in the governor's office, is that we
• 27:54
Speaker 12: have to we have to help the areas that are
• 27:56
Speaker 12: growing with infrastructure and all the things they need to
• 27:58
Speaker 12: grow and grow faster. But we can't forget, really the
• 28:02
Speaker 12: areas of West Virginia that basically has has has paid
• 28:05
Speaker 12: for government for many, many years, and so we're also
• 28:07
Speaker 12: trying to do everything we can for the southern coal
• 28:09
Speaker 12: fields with infrastructure and try to do everything we can
• 28:14
Speaker 12: to push businesses that way. So we think that all
• 28:17
Speaker 12: the West Virginia is transforming. We look forward to doing
• 28:20
Speaker 12: everything we can to get West Virginia, Southern West Virginia
• 28:24
Speaker 12: growing again. That's where my heart is, That's where the
• 28:26
Speaker 12: Governor's heart is, and again I'm sure that Governor Morrissey
• 28:29
Speaker 12: will take out that man and run with it as well.
• 28:31
Speaker 3: A couple of texts before we let you go, Texas.
• 28:33
Speaker 3: Why is West Virginia's GDP less than every other state
• 28:36
  Speaker 3: that surrounds us.
• 28:38
Speaker 12: I think a lot of it has to do with
• 28:40
Speaker 12: with with eighty years of not trying to make West
• 28:44
Speaker 12: Virginia business friendly. If businesses won't come to West Virginia,
• 28:48
Speaker 12: we can't raise our standard of living. That's something we've
• 28:51
Speaker 12: worked hard over the last ten years to try to
• 28:53
Speaker 12: turn around. But for many years, you know, big businesses
• 28:56
Speaker 12: for punies to come to West Virginia and so they
• 28:59
Speaker 12: basically situated on our border. We've tried to change that.
• 29:02
Speaker 12: We think we are changing that that will do a
• 29:04
Speaker 12: lot to move up our grosc national product to our
• 29:08
Speaker 12: medium income. We're doing a lot to work towards that,
• 29:10
Speaker 12: But you can't do eighty years of telling businesses not
• 29:13
Speaker 12: to come to West Virginia and expect us to be
• 29:15
Speaker 12: competitive with our surrounding states.
• 29:17
Speaker 3: Now, outside your current role the State Revenue Secretary, you're
• 29:21
Speaker 3: also running to be the state treasurer. I know you're
• 29:23
Speaker 3: keeping the two things separate. But while I've got you here,
• 29:26
Speaker 3: may not have you on before the election talk about
• 29:28
Speaker 3: your run for state treasure Why do you want to
• 29:29
  Speaker 3: do this?
• 29:29
Speaker 8: We're very excited. I'm very excited about that.
• 29:32
Speaker 12: You know, I spent twenty years of CPA and another
• 29:34
Speaker 12: twenty years in business, so I am a numbers guy.
• 29:38
Speaker 12: The State treasure as much as anything, is a CFO
• 29:41
Speaker 12: for the state Chief Financial officer state. So how we
• 29:44
Speaker 12: spend money, how we save money, how we borrow money,
• 29:47
Speaker 12: how we have we receive money, those are things we
• 29:49
Speaker 12: want to work on. We're also the state's bank, so
• 29:52
Speaker 12: we take care of all the banking relationships for the
• 29:55
Speaker 12: state of West Virginia. Were run the Hope Scholarship program,
• 29:58
Speaker 12: some of the college savings programs, so it's a big portfolio.
• 30:02
Speaker 12: I look forward to being able to kind of almost
• 30:05
Speaker 12: narrow what the things that I work on, and also
• 30:08
Speaker 12: look forward to being able to really work hard to
• 30:11
Speaker 12: extend educational freedom, but take a longer view of states finances.
• 30:17
Speaker 8: You know, in the.
• 30:17
Speaker 12: Governor's office it's go, go go every day there's some
• 30:20
Speaker 12: issue that the legislature only gets sixty days to focus
• 30:24
Speaker 12: in on issues. I think we can give a lot
• 30:26
Speaker 12: of information to the governor and legislature for about long
• 30:28
Speaker 12: term trends and what we're seeing and hopefully be able
• 30:30
Speaker 12: to help them all be successful.
• 30:32
Speaker 3: Stay Revenue Secretary, Larry Pack, I appreciate you being here man,
• 30:34
Speaker 3: Thanks a lot, Thanks for opportunity.

Speaker 3: Rob Real good morning is here from our sister station
• 34:10
Speaker 3: ninety six to one KWS Superstar Country. Hey man, it's
• 34:13
Speaker 3: a much shorter walk to come do the show with
• 34:16
Speaker 3: you at the moment. It's it's literally across the hall
• 34:19
Speaker 3: now as opposed to across the hall around that you
• 34:22
Speaker 3: needed a shirp and a Saint Bernard to get from
• 34:23
Speaker 3: my studio to yours. So far, so what do you
• 34:26
Speaker 3: think of the new Diggs?
• 34:27
  Speaker 15: Man?
• 34:27
Speaker 3: I mean, you know, this is our this is our
• 34:28
Speaker 3: temporary home because we're gonna be here and then we're
• 34:31
Speaker 3: gonna eventually move back upstairs. And this is going to
• 34:33
Speaker 3: be everybody's transition home from what I understand. Yeah, like,
• 34:37
Speaker 3: because they're going to redo all the studios and you'll
• 34:39
Speaker 3: come in here and hang out, then you'll go back again.
• 34:40
Speaker 3: But so far, what do you think of It is
• 34:43
Speaker 3: bright and beautiful and even though this is radio, do
• 34:47
Speaker 3: not underestimate the quality of the visual for us to
• 34:52
  Speaker 3: be able to.
• 34:52
Speaker 8: Do what we do.
• 34:53
Speaker 3: Indeed all right, so, and I would at the least
• 34:55
Speaker 3: thought you would have brought us like a bag of
• 34:56
Speaker 3: you know, a fruit basket or a can ham or
• 34:58
Speaker 3: something as a trust me, this station already has enough
• 35:01
Speaker 3: candish down. Thank you?
• 35:03
  Speaker 8: All right?
• 35:04
Speaker 3: All right, Well, waited all day on that one. So Rob,
• 35:08
Speaker 3: I've known you for how long? How long have you
• 35:10
Speaker 3: been here? I've been back a year and a half.
• 35:13
Speaker 3: So this is my second tour of duty with WVRC Media.
• 35:17
Speaker 3: You did talk about new studios. When I came back,
• 35:19
Speaker 3: it had been I think it's somewhere between seven and
• 35:22
Speaker 3: eight years since i'd been in the ninety six one studio,
• 35:24
Speaker 3: and I remembered just enough. It was just familiar enough
• 35:27
Speaker 3: to be awkward when you think you know it but
• 35:30
Speaker 3: you don't. Yes, Yes, that whole day two thing. You know,
• 35:33
Speaker 3: day one you don't know what you know. You know,
• 35:35
  Speaker 3: you don't know what you're doing. You're a pig on
• 35:36
Speaker 3: roller skates. But day two you think, oh, I kind
• 35:38
Speaker 3: of got this. No, No, I did not. Yeah, I
• 35:42
Speaker 3: said a dumb thing a couple of months ago. I
• 35:45
Speaker 3: think during our Cares for Kids radio thon, I got
• 35:49
Speaker 3: caught up in the spirit of it. At the Hosteler
• 35:51
Speaker 3: Center on the tenth floor of DOUBLEVU Medicine Children's and
• 35:55
Speaker 3: I wasn't thrilled with how the numbers were coming in
• 35:58
Speaker 3: early Friday morning, and I proclaimed that if we could
• 36:01
Speaker 3: somehow manage to beat last year's total, that I would
• 36:05
Speaker 3: walk the check back from our office here in Charleston
• 36:08
Speaker 3: to the to WVU Medicine Children that I would that
• 36:13
  Speaker 3: I that I'd walk carry it myself. That's a that
• 36:16
Speaker 3: was a dumb thingie. What were you thinking? I was.
• 36:19
  Speaker 3: I know you're not a drinker, but still, I mean,
• 36:21
Speaker 3: had you had a little nip, well, you know, little
• 36:23
Speaker 3: Gaelic coffee is what it takes to get you go
• 36:25
Speaker 3: and keep you warm. It was cold in the Hostetler
• 36:27
Speaker 3: Center that morning. And we frequently talk about in this
• 36:30
Speaker 3: place how I am fifty IQ part points smarter afternoon
• 36:34
Speaker 3: than I am before it. And I just I was
• 36:36
Speaker 3: a talking monkey at that point, and I just I said,
• 36:40
Speaker 3: you know, I if y'all can do this, I will walk.
• 36:45
Speaker 3: I didn't think it was gonna happen. Let's be honest.
• 36:46
Speaker 3: You underestimated our listeners, basically, Yeah, I think I did,
• 36:50
Speaker 3: but by a long shot because y'all smashed it one
• 36:52
Speaker 3: hundred and seventy two thousand dollars and some change for
• 36:55
Speaker 3: West Virginia kids to stay healthy, happy and healing. And
• 37:00
Speaker 3: so I am nothing if not a man of my word.
• 37:02
Speaker 3: You are that are I am nothing? But I am
• 37:04
Speaker 3: a man of my word. So I will keep that promise.
• 37:07
Speaker 3: And Thursday morning, at eight o'clock this this Thursday, less
• 37:11
Speaker 3: than forty seven hours from now, I will step out
• 37:15
Speaker 3: of the Walker Studios. We've got somebody to hit the
• 37:17
Speaker 3: ones and the twos for me, and I will start
• 37:19
Speaker 3: walking toward Morgantown. We've coordinated some with West Virginia State Police,
• 37:25
Speaker 3: and of course you know the corporate folks and their lawyers.
• 37:28
Speaker 3: I hate all lawyers except mine. Good morning, Olivia. So
• 37:32
Speaker 3: there are some rules to this. I obviously can't do
• 37:35
Speaker 3: it all at once. They're only letting me walk during daylight.
• 37:38
Speaker 3: So each day we'll start at eight am and I
• 37:41
Speaker 3: have basically until six pm to get that day. And
• 37:44
Speaker 3: it's good, but it's getting darker sooner.
• 37:46
  Speaker 8: Now.
• 37:46
Speaker 3: We haven't had the time change yet, but I noticed
• 37:48
Speaker 3: it last night. Just starting to get darker a lot sooner.
• 37:50
Speaker 3: It is not a coincidence. That we're getting this done
• 37:53
Speaker 3: before the time change hits on November three, because you know,
• 37:59
Speaker 3: we fall back and that's an hour less I have
• 38:03
Speaker 3: in the evening, So about ten hours of available walking
• 38:07
Speaker 3: time that includes any pit stops and food and you know,
• 38:10
Speaker 3: passing out by the side of the road, you know,
• 38:13
Speaker 3: any defibrillation that's gonna have to happen. So eight o'clock,
• 38:16
Speaker 3: day one, I hope to make it to Clintdennon's twenty
• 38:20
Speaker 3: one miles. That'll be the biggest chunk of it. If
• 38:22
Speaker 3: I can survive on Thursday, I'll.
• 38:25
  Speaker 8: Be all right.
• 38:25
Speaker 3: Now, somebody's gonna be following you, like along in a
• 38:28
Speaker 3: vehicle and you know, like throw you in the back. Well,
• 38:30
Speaker 3: I mean that happens to me every day. Well yeah,
• 38:32
Speaker 3: but I will have support available. Our station vehicle truck
• 38:37
Speaker 3: Norris and as we like to call it, will be
• 38:40
Speaker 3: floating around wherever I'm walking. It may not necessarily be
• 38:43
Speaker 3: where I plan to stop that day, but it'll be
• 38:45
Speaker 3: there and can fetch me the Some of the time
• 38:50
Speaker 3: it'll be folks who work with us. Some of the
• 38:51
Speaker 3: time it's gonna be my family who's going to be
• 38:53
Speaker 3: in town next week. Just in case because you know
• 38:55
Speaker 3: they have a vested interest in whether I live or don't,
• 39:00
Speaker 3: you know, the ones who will be their rent from me.
• 39:03
Speaker 3: So yeah, I'll have the support I need. But any
• 39:07
Speaker 3: cheering on that folks want to do, any following along
• 39:10
Speaker 3: they want to do on social media, good words, I'm
• 39:13
Speaker 3: always happy to take. And if anybody is so moved
• 39:16
Speaker 3: by this that they want to reach out to the
• 39:18
Speaker 3: Children's Miracle Network in WVU Medicine Children's I think we
• 39:21
Speaker 3: can accommodate that as well. You know, I'm not looking
• 39:25
Speaker 3: for pledges per mile or anything like that. It's but
• 39:28
Speaker 3: if you are so moved, I'm sure we can get
• 39:30
Speaker 3: that arranged. So how long approximately is this going to take?
• 39:34
Speaker 3: I know you've got a factor in weather and things
• 39:36
Speaker 3: of that nature, and yeah, and bunyons and that nature.
• 39:39
Speaker 3: Shoote horses, don't they? But but how long is this
• 39:42
Speaker 3: going to take? Do you have any idea? I have
• 39:43
Speaker 3: allotted eleven work days, So we'll go Thursday Friday this week,
• 39:48
Speaker 3: I'll rest up Saturday Sunday. We'll go Monday through Friday
• 39:52
Speaker 3: the next week, rest up the following Saturday Sunday, and
• 39:55
Speaker 3: then start again the following Monday and we should be
• 40:00
Speaker 3: walking into WVU Medicine Children's hitting the elevator up to
• 40:04
Speaker 3: the tenth floor again the Hostetler Center for some Halloween
• 40:06
Speaker 3: shenanigans on Thursday afternoon, October thirty. First, this is built
• 40:12
Speaker 3: kind of in a way that if there is a problem,
• 40:14
Speaker 3: whether it's weather or something like that, or you or me,
• 40:19
Speaker 3: there there is kind of a flex day in there
• 40:21
Speaker 3: in that last week of two very short walks that
• 40:24
Speaker 3: I'm planning that I could combine into one. And you know,
• 40:28
Speaker 3: if worse comes to worse, I will do some walking
• 40:31
Speaker 3: on Saturday or Sunday just to make up some miles
• 40:33
Speaker 3: if I need to. So are you booking hotels along
• 40:35
Speaker 3: the way? You sleeping in the truck coming? How's this?
• 40:37
Speaker 3: I want to know, Legist. The answer is yes to
• 40:40
Speaker 3: all that. Here in the early on I'll get to
• 40:42
Speaker 3: sleep in my own bed in downtown Charleston. You know,
• 40:45
Speaker 3: I'll get to Clinton and the truck Okay, yeah, I
• 40:47
Speaker 3: didn't think about that. The truck will be waiting for me.
• 40:49
Speaker 3: I'll simply drive back, sleep in my own bed. I'll
• 40:52
Speaker 3: actually come in and do some things in the studio
• 40:54
Speaker 3: Friday morning, and then he usually wake up yeap, and
• 40:57
Speaker 3: then somebody will follow me to left hand on Friday
• 41:00
Speaker 3: and we'll drop the truck off and they'll take me
• 41:02
Speaker 3: back and I'll start in Clinton and and it's when
• 41:05
Speaker 3: we get closer to it's when we get closer to
• 41:07
Speaker 3: the hospital that final week Clarksburg, Fairmont, Morgantown, that I'll
• 41:11
Speaker 3: need some hotel help. But having family to ferry me
• 41:16
Speaker 3: around in that middle week is going to help because
• 41:19
Speaker 3: I can just pass out in the passenger seat and maybe,
• 41:22
Speaker 3: you know, put my feet up so that they're not
• 41:24
Speaker 3: all swollen looking like for everyone started attempted. Because I
• 41:27
Speaker 3: know you've been in radio for a long time and
• 41:29
Speaker 3: you've been all over the country. Have you ever attempted
• 41:31
Speaker 3: anything even remotely close to this? So I've done a
• 41:35
Speaker 3: number of stupid things in my life, but are we
• 41:39
Speaker 3: still talking about radio? Well, the closest it comes for me.
• 41:44
Speaker 3: It's both good and bad. Of course. You know, I
• 41:46
Speaker 3: served in the United States Marine Corps, so I'm used
• 41:48
Speaker 3: to it was my honor.
• 41:50
  Speaker 8: I am.
• 41:51
Speaker 3: I am familiar with hiking twenty miles in a field pack.
• 41:55
  Speaker 3: I was a marathon or when I was a big
• 41:57
Speaker 3: difference rob between eighteen to twenty year old and early fifties. Raw,
• 42:02
Speaker 3: that's the difference. I will I will turn fifty one,
• 42:05
Speaker 3: God willing on All Saints Day. It is not a coincidence.
• 42:08
Speaker 3: And I'm trying to finish this thing before my birthday.
• 42:12
Speaker 3: But yeah, so I at least have the mental experience
• 42:16
Speaker 3: of going this far. I mean, I did an iron
• 42:18
Speaker 3: Man in my teens, so you'd think that at least
• 42:22
Speaker 3: some of that imprinting would stick in my head. But
• 42:25
  Speaker 3: you're right, I have the I'm fifty, and I have
• 42:28
Speaker 3: the knees of a man twice my age, So this
• 42:31
Speaker 3: is going to be interesting. I've scouted the route and
• 42:34
Speaker 3: there are a couple of spots where the road just
• 42:36
Speaker 3: goes uphill. It's uphill for one hundred and seventy two
• 42:39
Speaker 3: miles really to Morgantown. So this was not So you're
• 42:42
Speaker 3: gonna start Thursday morning, You're averaging about twenty miles a day.
• 42:46
Speaker 3: Twenty one is the most I will do on day.
• 42:49
Speaker 3: So but if you're feeling good, you may do a
• 42:50
Speaker 3: couple more. Yeah, or if you're feeling bad, maybe you
• 42:53
Speaker 3: drop off a little bit.
• 42:54
  Speaker 15: Yeah.
• 42:54
Speaker 3: Well, I'm you know, I would say the average you know,
• 42:56
Speaker 3: one hundred and seventy two divided by eleven days, it's
• 42:59
Speaker 3: an average about fifteen or sixteen miles a day. But
• 43:02
Speaker 3: you know, if I have a like if I'm feeling
• 43:04
Speaker 3: good Friday afternoon and I get and I passed the
• 43:06
Speaker 3: post office in left hand, and I'm like, I can
• 43:08
Speaker 3: go a little bit more. I'll keep going toward Arnoldsberg
• 43:11
Speaker 3: a little bit and then you know, I'll have the
• 43:14
Speaker 3: weekend to rest. But this is not this is not
• 43:19
Speaker 3: my finestar, I'll be honest. Well, now i'd like to,
• 43:22
Speaker 3: I mean, if you can, I'd like for you to
• 43:24
Speaker 3: check in with us, you know, on the show. I
• 43:26
Speaker 3: would be glad to, but we don't want it to
• 43:28
Speaker 3: sound like you're calling a one night one nine hundred
• 43:31
Speaker 3: number and you're breathing heavily on the phone or something
• 43:33
Speaker 3: back if you remember those I'm sure you do because
• 43:34
Speaker 3: you're Rob. So I could never afford it. So I
• 43:38
Speaker 3: would like for you to maybe check in with as
• 43:40
Speaker 3: daily is best you can, like, Rob, where are you?
• 43:42
Speaker 3: Even if it's just for five minutes? Is that something
• 43:43
Speaker 3: we could do? I think we can. We can work
• 43:45
Speaker 3: that out. It's funny you mentioned that I've already worked
• 43:48
Speaker 3: out my Halloween costume for the final day. Had I
• 43:50
Speaker 3: thought ahead, I would have done a Where's Waldo? Okay,
• 43:53
Speaker 3: and I'm not doing that, but maybe maybe the next
• 43:57
Speaker 3: time I do something this stupid. I got a text
• 44:00
Speaker 3: here for you. Text says Rob. Make sure you've got
• 44:02
Speaker 3: some Elvis on your phone or iPod for your trak
• 44:05
Speaker 3: to Morgantown. Some awareness dance walking music will help make
• 44:08
Speaker 3: the time fly by safe travels.
• 44:11
  Speaker 8: Uh, thank you?
• 44:12
Speaker 3: And another one says, thought about hiking the Appleachian Trail,
• 44:14
Speaker 3: question mark, This seems like a nice practice run for
• 44:17
Speaker 3: the ample Eachian Trail. Yes, I would need trekking polls
• 44:21
Speaker 3: for that. I'm not kidding when I say my knees
• 44:24
Speaker 3: are shot. Two seasons of minor league baseball as a
• 44:26
Speaker 3: catcher and two surgeries, and it's a bone on bone
• 44:30
Speaker 3: on bone on bone. This is gonna be fun, all right, Rob.
• 44:33
Speaker 3: We'll be teching, we'll be testing, checking in with you
• 44:36
Speaker 3: from time to time. Man, I'm gonna be sent to
• 44:37
