- 0:01Speaker 1: Yeah, you gotta work.
- 0:10Speaker 2: You gotta work. Ry sign it's mine gotta show. Everybody
- 0:14Speaker 2: is mine. Sign you gotta work. Cry sign.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Another mind from Saga Die this Day line, Don't talk,
- 0:21Speaker 3: you Gotta work.
- 0:23Speaker 4: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's Talk is
- 0:26Speaker 4: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, Real Experience,
- 0:30Speaker 4: Real Results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 4: begin on Let's Talk.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I have the I got my two co hosts in
- 0:42Speaker 1: the building. I look I feel like I am like underdressed,
- 0:46Speaker 1: I think compared to the too. I think today it's
- 0:53Speaker 1: one of those kind of days that you know in
- 0:55Speaker 1: Hollywood when you set the you know, the script. I
- 0:58Speaker 1: was like thinking to myself, I was like, man, that's
- 0:59Speaker 1: a lot of but we're gonna hit. It's gonna be
- 1:02Speaker 1: like a hit and missed kind of deal today that
- 1:04Speaker 1: we're just gonna get down. And we also have a
- 1:08Speaker 1: guest at the end of the show. The last second
- 1:10Speaker 1: half of the show. Just one of those weekends where
- 1:12Speaker 1: it's just like so much much. Yeah, so we'll start okay,
- 1:16Speaker 1: So as we know, the legislator, we basically sort of
- 1:20Speaker 1: exed ourselves out of the whole high school transfer rule
- 1:23Speaker 1: here in West Virginia, and the wv SSAC is taking
- 1:26Speaker 1: it back over.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Now, let me make this clear.
- 1:29Speaker 3: The wv SSSC does not necessarily create the rules quote unquote.
- 1:35Speaker 3: What they do is they have a committee of principals
- 1:37Speaker 3: and ads, so they have like a rules committee. What
- 1:40Speaker 3: the rules committee did was they put out of options.
- 1:43Speaker 3: So they gave the option to say, we can keep
- 1:45Speaker 3: the rule as it is, we can go back to
- 1:47Speaker 3: the role rule, or we can create the new rule.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Now what the new rule. They went.
- 1:52Speaker 3: So they presented the new rule and the principles and
- 1:55Speaker 3: the ads throughout the state. They voted on it. So
- 1:57Speaker 3: this is what they're gonna go. Moving forward to twenty two,
- 2:00Speaker 3: here's what the new rule says. So you get a
- 2:03Speaker 3: one time transfer for students in ninth and tenth grade.
- 2:07Speaker 3: So you get a mulligan. You get a free shot
- 2:09Speaker 3: to go wherever you want. If you're in ninth or
- 2:11Speaker 3: tenth grade, you can if you don't like your situation
- 2:14Speaker 3: at your school, you get a one time transfer. The
- 2:17Speaker 3: deadline of transfer is September first, So as far as
- 2:21Speaker 3: mid season transfers. The students transfer after September first, during
- 2:25Speaker 3: the active season they are already participating in, they are
- 2:28Speaker 3: ineligible for that specific sport for the remainder of the
- 2:32Speaker 3: school year. So if you transfer in the middle of
- 2:34Speaker 3: football season, you can't play for your new school. You
- 2:36Speaker 3: may be able to play basketball or wrestle whatever, you
- 2:38Speaker 3: can't play for your new schools NOW transferring back provision
- 2:42Speaker 3: A students in ninth, tenth, or eleventh grade may transfer
- 2:46Speaker 3: back to their original home school within the parents residential
- 2:50Speaker 3: district and they get immediately eligible. So if you transfer out,
- 2:54Speaker 3: so if you go from South Charleston to Capitol and
- 2:57Speaker 3: then if you're in eleventh grade, you want to come
- 2:58Speaker 3: back to South charles so you can come back and
- 3:01Speaker 3: you'll be able to play only as the eleventh grade. No, No, No, nine,
- 3:04Speaker 3: tenth and eleven, so can transfer out like four and again.
- 3:08Speaker 3: So if you even go somewhere I think from eighth
- 3:10Speaker 3: grade to ninth grade and then transfer back, that that
- 3:12Speaker 3: counts as your transfer. And then you transfer back that
- 3:14Speaker 3: counts as the transfer back provision. The last thing is
- 3:18Speaker 3: the restriction, So juniors and seniors generally lose immediate eligibility
- 3:24Speaker 3: if they move without correspondent change of address, locking them
- 3:29Speaker 3: out to prevent exective transfer. So essentially, what that says
- 3:33Speaker 3: if somebody, if you're in eleventh grade and you want
- 3:35Speaker 3: to do your senior year or the remainder of your
- 3:38Speaker 3: eleventh grade year somewhere else, you're gonna lose a year.
- 3:42Speaker 3: And obviously if you're going to twelfth grade and you transfer,
- 3:44Speaker 3: you'll lose that year. So those are the rules moving
- 3:48Speaker 3: forward twenty twenty six.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Okay, So.
- 3:53Speaker 1: To your knowledge, how are people responding to this or
- 3:59Speaker 1: have you had a chance to hear any mumblings? What
- 4:03Speaker 1: is your personal thoughts about it? Lisa, And same with
- 4:07Speaker 1: you if you have any thoughts about it.
- 4:09Speaker 3: And I don't think it's as bad. It's a middle ground,
- 4:12Speaker 3: it's kind of it sort of closes the wild wild
- 4:15Speaker 3: West by actually making some provisions. And again with all
- 4:19Speaker 3: these rules, also there is a like if something happened,
- 4:22Speaker 3: if you're bullying or something is going on specific with
- 4:25Speaker 3: you during your school, you will have a chance to
- 4:28Speaker 3: have an appeal if you're denied. But I think people
- 4:31Speaker 3: to at least's point earlier, I don't think I think
- 4:32Speaker 3: people read the headlines but didn't necessarily read the rules.
- 4:35Speaker 3: So if you look at the rules, this is not
- 4:38Speaker 3: a bad it's not the worst thing, and it's going
- 4:40Speaker 3: to prevent some maybe kid who has been in the
- 4:43Speaker 3: program for all four years, you're coming up on your
- 4:46Speaker 3: senior year and then you have another maybe equally situated
- 4:49Speaker 3: senior come in and transferring to take your position or
- 4:52Speaker 3: something to that effect. So I think that's what some
- 4:54Speaker 3: of the consideration was. So I think my opinion, it's
- 4:58Speaker 3: a happy medium. It's okay, that's fine.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean so basically just ends free agency, so
- 5:04Speaker 5: to speak for your juniors and seniors correct essentially, yeah, yeah,
- 5:07Speaker 5: So the only the only problem that I think it's
- 5:11Speaker 5: a good thing. We do need to rein in what
- 5:12Speaker 5: was happening at the high school level, you know, and
- 5:16Speaker 5: beyond that, really for collegiate it would be nice if
- 5:18Speaker 5: we had that similar rules. But but the only rule
- 5:22Speaker 5: that kind of baffled me, and maybe you guys can
- 5:24Speaker 5: help me understand why they would do this. But why
- 5:27Speaker 5: do they have to move by early September? Why would
- 5:29Speaker 5: they have set a date on.
- 5:31Speaker 3: That, Well, it's always been a day currently, like it's
- 5:34Speaker 3: in June or July, So that's under the current rules
- 5:37Speaker 3: form a rule.
- 5:37Speaker 5: So they get more time. Actually they get a little
- 5:39Speaker 5: bit more time. Okay, yeah, okay, that makes sense.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Now are they getting okay, are they getting more time?
- 5:45Speaker 1: But if I'm the coach, I'm getting less time in
- 5:49Speaker 1: quote a replacement of that player?
- 5:52Speaker 2: Is that? What would you not? I wouldn't say that.
- 5:55Speaker 3: I mean, if you're a football player and you got
- 5:57Speaker 3: some kid who try I mean, I guess you could
- 5:59Speaker 3: look at like, if you're basketball more the the you know,
- 6:02Speaker 3: the in school type of sports, then this really doesn't
- 6:05Speaker 3: affect you that time period necessarily if you're football.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Obviously we start practicing in the summer.
- 6:10Speaker 1: So maybe I'm going to ask both of you all
- 6:15Speaker 1: this question. When you think about when you think about
- 6:20Speaker 1: the transfer rule and you and and based on your
- 6:24Speaker 1: your own individual thought process of your child, would you
- 6:33Speaker 1: what would it take for you to decide to want
- 6:36Speaker 1: to create or put yourself in a situation to transfer
- 6:41Speaker 1: your child or if your child came to you and said, dad, mom,
- 6:46Speaker 1: I want to transfer. What would be your thought process
- 6:50Speaker 1: when you first hear that? And and what what do
- 6:53Speaker 1: you how do you think you would handle that?
- 6:56Speaker 3: My I guess to answer your question, I would thing
- 7:00Speaker 3: probably along two paths. I think one, if you're just
- 7:03Speaker 3: if this if our program just isn't up the par
- 7:07Speaker 3: so for example, and no shout out to anybody, for
- 7:10Speaker 3: one of my girls is playing basketball and we have,
- 7:13Speaker 3: like you know, the science teacher out there. Now, the
- 7:17Speaker 3: science teacher is not a basketball coach. They just they
- 7:19Speaker 3: didn't want to see the team collapse because nobody wanted
- 7:23Speaker 3: the job. So now they're just kind of out there
- 7:25Speaker 3: just to help the kids, but they're not necessarily a coach.
- 7:29Speaker 3: So if I have a situation like that, or if
- 7:32Speaker 3: there's something else going on to what I would think
- 7:35Speaker 3: that my child is being discriminated against, or or they're
- 7:38Speaker 3: being bullied, or they're just in a not in a
- 7:41Speaker 3: in an environment that's again I'm all for tough environments,
- 7:44Speaker 3: but I'm just like a toxic environment where it's just
- 7:47Speaker 3: you know, it's not it's not it's not going to
- 7:50Speaker 3: do anything for their development.
- 7:51Speaker 5: So those are my two certain I totally agree with
- 7:53Speaker 5: what Hollis just said. And you know, there should be
- 7:56Speaker 5: some kind of underlying factor of why your child is
- 7:59Speaker 5: coming to you and asking for a transfer and and
- 8:01Speaker 5: your job as as a parent is to get to
- 8:03Speaker 5: the bottom of it. And you know, it could be
- 8:05Speaker 5: an emotional like you said, an emotional trauma going on
- 8:08Speaker 5: with another student or another student athlete on the team
- 8:12Speaker 5: that you know they're being bullied or they're they're not
- 8:14Speaker 5: comfortable playing with that athlete. Maybe the coach is, like
- 8:17Speaker 5: you said, not qualified to do. We know that happens
- 8:21Speaker 5: a lot in in you know, school districts because of
- 8:23Speaker 5: the shortage of teachers and people willing to coach. But
- 8:27Speaker 5: you know, I think if if your child comes to
- 8:30Speaker 5: you and says, you know, this is this is what
- 8:32Speaker 5: I want. As a parent, it's your job to explore
- 8:36Speaker 5: why they want it.
- 8:37Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, Oh no, he's gonna.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Okay in in part in part I think that I can.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I can roll with both of you to a degree.
- 8:55Speaker 1: What if my son comes to me and and he
- 9:00Speaker 1: is in a situation to where they're not winning, and
- 9:06Speaker 1: he and the team says call contacts him, says hey,
- 9:10Speaker 1: look you can come over here. You'll be you'll be
- 9:12Speaker 1: a starter over here, and we're winning. My kid's not leaving.
- 9:18Speaker 1: But we didn't say no. I didn't say I didn't know.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I didn't say I didn't say that. You said that,
- 9:23Speaker 1: I'm just saying for me, I'm not allowing my son
- 9:28Speaker 1: to leave because because you're losing.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I argue, no, you didn't know.
- 9:34Speaker 1: But but but in my mindset, I think there's a
- 9:38Speaker 1: lot of people who had whose child is pretty good,
- 9:45Speaker 1: maybe good, maybe really good, and they're on a team
- 9:49Speaker 1: that's not necessarily winning, and that he or she may
- 9:52Speaker 1: be the only player that's there, and you realize that
- 9:56Speaker 1: your future is not going to be.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Anywhere for you to be a champion. To me, I
- 10:05Speaker 2: have I don't see sports.
- 10:08Speaker 1: I don't see you sports like like that that you
- 10:14Speaker 1: that there has to be the star you your kid
- 10:16Speaker 1: has to be the star your kid.
- 10:18Speaker 3: And I'm not saying that you are. I would disagree
- 10:21Speaker 3: with that point. I think a lot of people are
- 10:22Speaker 3: are are. I don't think that's the reason why a
- 10:25Speaker 3: lot of people are leaving. I think people are leaving
- 10:27Speaker 3: because they're deeming this program better. I think the kids
- 10:31Speaker 3: who are are leaving to win are in the minority.
- 10:34Speaker 3: I don't believe.
- 10:35Speaker 5: I believe they're going to the better, better program.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I think that's why kids leave.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Okay, and our parents Okay, yeah, yeah, I'll even challenge thath,
- 10:47Speaker 1: what are you gonna do when they get a job
- 10:48Speaker 1: and they don't have to quote the perfect boss to
- 10:52Speaker 1: to work with them.
- 10:53Speaker 2: But I believe the.
- 10:55Speaker 6: Company and see, and I think my problem, my my
- 11:00Speaker 6: SoC problem, My sole problem with this is that I'm
- 11:06Speaker 6: old school enough to to the point to where my
- 11:11Speaker 6: dad would have My dad would have my dad taught
- 11:13Speaker 6: me that there are there's adversity that you have to
- 11:17Speaker 6: go through and if you if you can, if you
- 11:21Speaker 6: can withstand that and produce, that's gonna put you in
- 11:25Speaker 6: a situation to be a better plerk person, better athlete,
- 11:30Speaker 6: such and such and all those kinds of things.
- 11:31Speaker 1: And I just and I'm sorry it worked for me,
- 11:35Speaker 1: and I'm not saying that it's supposed to work for everybody,
- 11:38Speaker 1: But I just I don't know how to do.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I don't know how to go past.
- 11:41Speaker 3: But I also think you were in a situation where
- 11:43Speaker 3: you didn't have the luxury of looking around, so you
- 11:45Speaker 3: took that advice that he gave you, or took those
- 11:48Speaker 3: lessons that he gave you, and you had to like
- 11:49Speaker 3: swallow that holistically. You didn't get a chance to like
- 11:53Speaker 3: be on the internet. And I'm looking at what all
- 11:55Speaker 3: these other cool programs are doing. You just didn't have that.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think that that could have been a challenge,
- 11:59Speaker 1: that have been a challenge for me, and maybe I
- 12:03Speaker 1: could have easily thought to want to move.
- 12:05Speaker 5: Yeah, And I was just going to say, sometimes losing
- 12:08Speaker 5: coincides with not not just players that you know aren't
- 12:13Speaker 5: or athletically able to do what other players are doing.
- 12:18Speaker 5: It could go with bad coaching and so you know,
- 12:20Speaker 5: sometimes it looks like they may be leaving because the
- 12:23Speaker 5: team is losing games, but it could really, you know,
- 12:27Speaker 5: actually be the fact that the coach is just there's
- 12:29Speaker 5: a better coach down the street at a different school.
- 12:32Speaker 2: So yeah.
- 12:33Speaker 3: And also speaking of transfer, so President Trump he issued
- 12:37Speaker 3: an executive order for a nc DOUAA transfer rule. So basically,
- 12:42Speaker 3: again we got to take this with a grain of salt.
- 12:45Speaker 3: There's been a lot of talk because this probably is
- 12:47Speaker 3: not going to be cut the you know, constitutional mustard.
- 12:51Speaker 3: But these are the things that he laid out in
- 12:53Speaker 3: the transfer in his executive order, So he limited the trends.
- 12:57Speaker 3: You get one free transfer. You have posed a five
- 13:00Speaker 3: year eligibility windows, so you have five years to complete
- 13:04Speaker 3: your your athletic you know, sport so you get like
- 13:08Speaker 3: we've seen some players now been seven to eight years
- 13:10Speaker 3: in college. He directs the n c double A to
- 13:13Speaker 3: create new transfer rules, so he put the pressure on them.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Compliance with the executive order is gonna be tied to
- 13:21Speaker 3: federal funding. Basically, he reduced the free movement of athletes, again,
- 13:26Speaker 3: limited the frequency of transfer, and basically restore roster stability,
- 13:31Speaker 3: coordinated federal oversight of the transfer related issue. So basically
- 13:36Speaker 3: he wants to get the Department of Justice, get Department
- 13:40Speaker 3: of Education evolved. He's going to create a registry for agents.
- 13:47Speaker 3: He's going to pair transfer limits with broader eligibility reforms,
- 13:50Speaker 3: so getting a five year cap restriction on professionalized participation.
- 13:56Speaker 3: That means like we've seen, like the G League, pro
- 13:58Speaker 3: basketball players like coming back to college. So I guess
- 14:00Speaker 3: he would try to mix that and he would push
- 14:03Speaker 3: Congress for a formalized rules. So basically, again, just get
- 14:06Speaker 3: the federal government involved. Now, again, a lot of athletic
- 14:11Speaker 3: directors and people in the know don't think this is
- 14:13Speaker 3: going to go anywhere. They think it's going to be
- 14:15Speaker 3: challenged in the Supreme Court would basically shoot it down,
- 14:17Speaker 3: which I tend.
- 14:18Speaker 2: To agree with, but just what do you guys? Start
- 14:21Speaker 2: with you, Lisa, what do you think of.
- 14:23Speaker 5: The I mean, the name of the whole act, And
- 14:27Speaker 5: I have to I have to read it off because
- 14:29Speaker 5: it kind of was like it sounds so dramatic but
- 14:31Speaker 5: urgent national action to save college sports. I'm like, okay,
- 14:37Speaker 5: I mean that that part's kind of like whoa you know.
- 14:40Speaker 5: I mean, like you said, Hollis, it's an executive order.
- 14:44Speaker 5: It's not a law, and so we have to see
- 14:46Speaker 5: whether or not it stands up, you know, in a
- 14:48Speaker 5: court of law. But here's my problem with it. If
- 14:50Speaker 5: we're going to limit player mobility while we allow the
- 14:54Speaker 5: college coaches to move freely, is I mean, that's a problem,
- 14:58Speaker 5: isn't it.
- 14:58Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, and I have, But again I have
- 15:01Speaker 3: the problems I have with this are probably beyond the
- 15:04Speaker 3: scope or what I want to talk about on this
- 15:06Speaker 3: fun show. So I have some real, real, real problems
- 15:10Speaker 3: with this, I think, you know, but let me go
- 15:14Speaker 3: to the positive. I'll do the positive now. I think
- 15:17Speaker 3: the five year window is probably a good thing.
- 15:19Speaker 2: You know.
- 15:20Speaker 3: I don't necessarily have a problem that no five years
- 15:25Speaker 3: to play four just like it used to be, you know,
- 15:28Speaker 3: absent of somebody getting hurt or something like that. Now
- 15:32Speaker 3: it being tied the federal fund, and that's just that's
- 15:34Speaker 3: not gonna pass. Uster, Congress getting involved, stop it. We
- 15:38Speaker 3: don't want that. But I think all in all, I think,
- 15:42Speaker 3: you know, to your point, Lisa, I think we have
- 15:46Speaker 3: to We can't police players in this money environment when
- 15:51Speaker 3: we had we're not willing to police coaching. We can't believe,
- 15:54Speaker 3: we talked a couple of weeks ago, we had delicate
- 15:56Speaker 3: flu hardy on here. We know the money that's coming in,
- 15:59Speaker 3: not only from alcohol, not only from ticket sales. I mean,
- 16:02Speaker 3: what were some of the final for in n C
- 16:04Speaker 3: Double A tickets. They're like thousands of dollars from you know,
- 16:07Speaker 3: gambling gaming sites, every other commercial. So you know, we
- 16:12Speaker 3: don't want to limit how these young men are are
- 16:15Speaker 3: are getting paid. However, I think in the you know,
- 16:19Speaker 3: in order to you know, keep the sanctity of what
- 16:23Speaker 3: we you know, romanticize of college sports, we have to
- 16:27Speaker 3: do something because again, if you look at the two
- 16:30Speaker 3: n C Double A champions and the major men's sports,
- 16:32Speaker 3: you look at Indiana and you look at Michigan, Michigan's
- 16:37Speaker 3: entire starting file for transfers, entire They came from somewhere else.
- 16:42Speaker 2: I think this was what their first year here. Yeah,
- 16:44Speaker 2: I think so.
- 16:44Speaker 5: And you saw that the women's coach from Tennessee lost
- 16:47Speaker 5: every single player. She has zero returning players.
- 16:51Speaker 2: From West Virginia too, so coach to Glenman won a.
- 16:53Speaker 5: National I mean, and they were in the they went
- 16:55Speaker 5: pretty far in the NC Double A tournament. So I
- 16:58Speaker 5: mean it goes both ways. I mean, Nick can drain
- 17:00Speaker 5: you or it can make you. You know, it can
- 17:02Speaker 5: do either.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Well, my when I think, when I think about this,
- 17:07Speaker 1: and you and and and I see it from all
- 17:10Speaker 1: of the and I look at it from all of
- 17:12Speaker 1: the negative sides of it, because I think that's the
- 17:16Speaker 1: chance that it could take place.
- 17:21Speaker 2: I don't. I don't. I don't see how.
- 17:25Speaker 1: I don't see why there's an opportunity to transfer, like why, okay,
- 17:33Speaker 1: pick a school and and in STAYCA.
- 17:38Speaker 2: But it's not it's not that I do.
- 17:43Speaker 7: Though.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Do you think it's it's okay? Do you think it's no?
- 17:49Speaker 1: The one thing that I don't one thing that I
- 17:51Speaker 1: don't want to have happen is I don't want it
- 17:53Speaker 1: to become a political thing. I don't want to I
- 17:56Speaker 1: definitely don't want to.
- 17:59Speaker 5: Politics are hard hard enough without anything.
- 18:01Speaker 1: You don't need to put your hands in there because
- 18:05Speaker 1: I don't even know if you know enough about it.
- 18:08Speaker 1: You know, you're just you're just jumping in and and
- 18:11Speaker 1: and and doing things.
- 18:13Speaker 2: I just I don't know. I just wish it could.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I just wish there was a way to get back
- 18:18Speaker 1: to old school playing that you you know, you pick
- 18:21Speaker 1: a school, you play for that school, and you're done,
- 18:23Speaker 1: and you.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Know, I just I just that's just how I I
- 18:26Speaker 2: just don't know how to change my mind on I
- 18:31Speaker 2: think one of the coaches and I think, uh, what's
- 18:34Speaker 2: my guy's name? I can't remember.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Cal Perry cal part Am I saying it right, He
- 18:41Speaker 3: was saying something that I thought was Again I don't
- 18:43Speaker 3: necessarily agree with his perspective all of it anyway, but
- 18:47Speaker 3: he did say something that I thought was critical, Like, right,
- 18:51Speaker 3: like most of these guys, you're not going to either
- 18:54Speaker 3: have a long career. And again, basketball is a little
- 18:56Speaker 3: different because you have so many opportunities, but you're not
- 18:58Speaker 3: going to have a long career or eventually that career
- 19:01Speaker 3: is going to end. So you have that your highest
- 19:03Speaker 3: potential earning your earning potential like when you're in your
- 19:06Speaker 3: twenties and early thirties, and then from there it's just
- 19:08Speaker 3: going the level off. So if you're in and if
- 19:11Speaker 3: you're not at a school for four years or three
- 19:15Speaker 3: years or two years, and you don't get to develop
- 19:17Speaker 3: those relationships, then those job opportunities, those that that notoriety
- 19:23Speaker 3: in the community is not going to be there.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:25Speaker 3: So if you're at a school, if you're at a Marshall, WV.
- 19:28Speaker 3: And I spent four years there and I'm a legend
- 19:30Speaker 3: and I'm a starter, You're always gonna be able to
- 19:32Speaker 3: make a living. Major Harris is never gonna be broken
- 19:34Speaker 3: West Virginia never ever ever, right, right? And with the transfer,
- 19:39Speaker 3: you going to like this kids literally going to like
- 19:41Speaker 3: five different schools.
- 19:42Speaker 1: You're not developing relationships, no, anybody, no. And I don't
- 19:46Speaker 1: understand why that's not clear. You're you're you're changing because
- 19:51Speaker 1: you what you want to.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Me chasing you're chasing money or you're playing time zone
- 19:57Speaker 3: or something.
- 19:57Speaker 2: You know.
- 19:58Speaker 1: And but two and I like that Hollins because the
- 20:02Speaker 1: reality of trying to be a star on four different
- 20:07Speaker 1: teams in five years, how do you I mean, you
- 20:13Speaker 1: you better have been a super superstar coming out, and
- 20:17Speaker 1: as you keep moving, they're only going to be talking
- 20:20Speaker 1: about you because you're moving and not any of the
- 20:23Speaker 1: no yards, no tackles, no intercess, They're just talking about
- 20:28Speaker 1: you leaving.
- 20:28Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think in this day and age, I
- 20:30Speaker 5: think fans want like, you know, the good old days,
- 20:34Speaker 5: whenever you could name all the players on your team
- 20:37Speaker 5: every year because they were returning and and people respect that.
- 20:42Speaker 5: And whenever you're you know, it's a it's a constant
- 20:44Speaker 5: influx and outflux of players and coaches, and it's just
- 20:48Speaker 5: it just makes the game. It doesn't even feel like
- 20:51Speaker 5: it's your alma mater and your school, you know what
- 20:54Speaker 5: I mean. Like there's no legend, there's no legends. Yeah,
- 20:57Speaker 5: like there there there won't be another major hairs if
- 20:59Speaker 5: we can't keep somebody there for more than a year.
- 21:02Speaker 3: And West Virginia so we got we had a West
- 21:05Speaker 3: Virginia had a big weekend the state. So our Marshall's
- 21:10Speaker 3: women's basketball team won the n i T YEP and
- 21:13Speaker 3: the men's basketball team won the New Crown Basketball Championship.
- 21:17Speaker 3: So it's kind of like what the c I T
- 21:19Speaker 3: was back in the day. It's the sort of the
- 21:21Speaker 3: third tier tournament. What the responses, reactions. I thought it
- 21:26Speaker 3: was a good thing. I thought it was great.
- 21:28Speaker 1: I love the idea of and and and some people
- 21:31Speaker 1: will will try to make the case that it wasn't this,
- 21:34Speaker 1: It wasn't that. You win a championship. I don't care
- 21:38Speaker 1: what it's called. I don't care what the level is.
- 21:40Speaker 1: To me, that's a championship. That's a title. That's something
- 21:44Speaker 1: that you can hold with you forever.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
- 21:48Speaker 1: And and for me, I think we have to look
- 21:52Speaker 1: at it when I say we we in West Virginia.
- 21:55Speaker 1: You got you got two major universities that are winning.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Yeah, you've got to be proud of that.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Got to be proud.
- 22:02Speaker 5: And the way they did it, I mean both both teams.
- 22:04Speaker 5: I mean that the men. Of course, there's was an
- 22:06Speaker 5: OT thriller. I mean they won eighty nine to eighty two,
- 22:09Speaker 5: but they started down six points in OT and I
- 22:11Speaker 5: think we were even texting in our thread and I
- 22:14Speaker 5: was like, I'm going to bed. They're going to lose.
- 22:17Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, And of course Jerry stayed up and was like,
- 22:20Speaker 5: you missed a good game. But anyway, yeah, really good.
- 22:22Speaker 5: So that was and you know the way Honor Huff played,
- 22:25Speaker 5: I mean, he he was unbelievable. He had like a
- 22:28Speaker 5: career high I think I read thirty eight points and
- 22:31Speaker 5: eight three pointers. So he was just unstoppable in that game.
- 22:34Speaker 3: And and it's an opportunity for the show out to
- 22:37Speaker 3: try to get that draft pick. One of them kids
- 22:39Speaker 3: is going to get drafted from the tournament. To me,
- 22:42Speaker 3: I agree with you. I don't know how you can't.
- 22:45Speaker 3: I don't know how you can pass on on some
- 22:49Speaker 3: of those kids. When you see that play, Yeah, I
- 22:52Speaker 3: mean that's I mean, that's that's.
- 22:53Speaker 5: Special, and it kind of gives us some hope for
- 22:56Speaker 5: for the whole program because you know, this is Ross Hodges,
- 22:59Speaker 5: their head coach. This is this first year up there,
- 23:02Speaker 5: and so you know, to to win a tournament championship,
- 23:04Speaker 5: regardless of the level, even if it's not in C
- 23:06Speaker 5: double A, I mean that that's pretty impressive.
- 23:09Speaker 3: I'm glad they didn't and this yeah me too. So
- 23:11Speaker 3: we got two other championships games. So we had the
- 23:14Speaker 3: men's n C Double A championship game and the women's
- 23:16Speaker 3: n C Double A championship game. We'll start with the
- 23:18Speaker 3: women's UH now again Prior to that, we had the
- 23:21Speaker 3: whole thing with Gino and Don Staley's different things of
- 23:25Speaker 3: that nature.
- 23:25Speaker 2: They were kind of going at it. But uh, you
- 23:28Speaker 2: know again, the women's.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Game, the championship game was actually it was kind of
- 23:31Speaker 3: like it was, It wasn't kind of it was lackluster
- 23:34Speaker 3: to say the least.
- 23:35Speaker 2: You said, U c LA dominated.
- 23:37Speaker 3: And what I've just my analysis from both championship games
- 23:41Speaker 3: men and women, is that if you have a skilled
- 23:43Speaker 3: big who can play in the paint, play outside the paint,
- 23:47Speaker 3: play with the back to the basket, and and potentially
- 23:50Speaker 3: take you off the dribble, you are in trouble in
- 23:53Speaker 3: college basketball. Because the young lady from UCLA, I mean,
- 23:56Speaker 3: she just dominated defensively, she dominated offensively.
- 24:00Speaker 2: She was just a force.
- 24:01Speaker 5: I mean it was a what twenty eight point blowout,
- 24:03Speaker 5: I mean it was. It was never close, and they
- 24:06Speaker 5: kept them completely game. Cocks were completely out of that
- 24:08Speaker 5: game the.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Whole way back in the day.
- 24:11Speaker 1: When somebody like that, when they're that tall and quote
- 24:14Speaker 1: the center, if they're out, they're out pasting a three
- 24:18Speaker 1: point line.
- 24:19Speaker 2: You ain't covering it. But man, you can't. You can't
- 24:22Speaker 2: do that now.
- 24:23Speaker 3: And I'm glad. Defensively, she was just a wrecking ball.
- 24:27Speaker 3: I mean you couldn't bring anything in the paint she was.
- 24:30Speaker 3: She was all over it.
- 24:31Speaker 5: And you know that was UCLA's first title since seventy eight,
- 24:35Speaker 5: nineteen seventy eight, So I mean that's you know they're celebrating.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's school.
- 24:39Speaker 3: And in the men's game again, same thing. I mean,
- 24:42Speaker 3: Michigan was just too big, too athletic. You had to
- 24:46Speaker 3: I believe the kid was from Spain. I mean he
- 24:49Speaker 3: was dominating and again my type of basketball, good old
- 24:53Speaker 3: American staff.
- 24:55Speaker 5: He did pick Michigan the last podcast when I remember
- 24:59Speaker 5: that when I all the game.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Good old American basketball. They were rough.
- 25:03Speaker 3: They were taking it, uh you know, Connecticut, to their credit,
- 25:07Speaker 3: they're taking it to the rack. I mean they couldn't
- 25:08Speaker 3: really get around the big guy. But it was it
- 25:11Speaker 3: was a good, scrappy game.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Yeah, they did not pick Michigan.
- 25:14Speaker 5: No, I think they were with me to pick. We
- 25:18Speaker 5: both picked Yukon. I think we said, didn't.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Maybe you get out.
- 25:22Speaker 5: Yeah, well I'm always the loser in this in this
- 25:27Speaker 5: little game we played in the podcast.
- 25:31Speaker 2: That one, I think I took Michigan. I think I
- 25:33Speaker 2: went with allis well, I.
- 25:34Speaker 5: Did read Michigan's defense locked, uh, you know, held Yukon
- 25:37Speaker 5: to like thirty point nine percent shooting. I mean that's
- 25:41Speaker 5: that's that's really good defense.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Yeah and shooting.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Yeah they could yeah it try to take it to
- 25:49Speaker 3: the rack, but they just they couldn't do anything.
- 25:50Speaker 5: I think they were drained. I mean they had a
- 25:52Speaker 5: lot of close games. Michigan didn't really have a did
- 25:56Speaker 5: they have a close game?
- 25:57Speaker 3: They had a couple, but not not. They didn't have
- 25:59Speaker 3: a game that that Yukon had playing and everything.
- 26:03Speaker 1: And to your point, I just want to say this,
- 26:06Speaker 1: like I think when you're when you start, when you
- 26:09Speaker 1: get into the like tournaments and you're got you got
- 26:11Speaker 1: games back to back, that's that's tough, you know, and
- 26:16Speaker 1: you've got to be able to maintain your shot getting
- 26:22Speaker 1: up and down the court. Man that I think that
- 26:24Speaker 1: is legs are getting tired. I mean, you gotta get rest.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I mean that's a that's a huge challenge. All Right,
- 26:32Speaker 1: We're gonna take a quick break and we will be
- 26:34Speaker 1: right back.

- 27:29Speaker 1: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back and we
- 27:31Speaker 1: are we have a great guest here today. Hollis is
- 27:35Speaker 1: gonna give the introduction and we'll go from there.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Yes, we do.
- 27:38Speaker 3: We have doctor Brian monte Leone. I hope I got
- 27:41Speaker 3: that correct. He is a sports psychologist in the Charlotte area.
- 27:45Speaker 3: He's works with NBA, NFL professional sports down to the
- 27:49Speaker 3: high school level athletes.
- 27:51Speaker 2: How are you doing today, Doc.
- 27:53Speaker 8: I'm doing fantastic. How are you guys doing good? Great?
- 27:56Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Now, one of the things that we've often talked about
- 27:59Speaker 3: on this show, and unfortunately here in West Virginia, I
- 28:01Speaker 3: do not believe we have at least an active sports
- 28:04Speaker 3: psychologist within the state who specializes or is that's part
- 28:07Speaker 3: of their practice. But one of the things that we've
- 28:10Speaker 3: often talked about is that, you know, mental health and
- 28:14Speaker 3: sports and particularly how you know athletes mental health is
- 28:19Speaker 3: affected post their career. And we've seen this, you know,
- 28:23Speaker 3: at the high school level. Somebody was a great high
- 28:24Speaker 3: school athlete, it doesn't work out in college, and they
- 28:27Speaker 3: kind of struggle all the way up to the professional ranks,
- 28:30Speaker 3: where we have, you know, guys who've achieved great things
- 28:33Speaker 3: and then after that career they seem to go downhill.
- 28:36Speaker 3: So from a professional and a clinical standpoint, can you
- 28:39Speaker 3: just give us like just sort of a perspective on that.
- 28:43Speaker 8: Yeah, I talk I talk about that with my athletes
- 28:45Speaker 8: at every level, but fortunate enough to work with with
- 28:50Speaker 8: pro athletes. But I'll start at the high school level.
- 28:54Speaker 8: These guys a lot of times are really you know,
- 28:57Speaker 8: passionate about their sport, their iheard men and women that
- 29:03Speaker 8: are very devoted to their sport, and you know a
- 29:06Speaker 8: lot of times they hope they can continue, but when
- 29:09Speaker 8: they don't, you know, there's a transition sometimes about what
- 29:12Speaker 8: it's like not to be an athlete and kind of
- 29:15Speaker 8: you know, how to develop some extracurricular activities and things
- 29:19Speaker 8: that they sacrifice playing sports. Particularly if you played multiple
- 29:23Speaker 8: sports in high school, you're pretty busy, right, And so
- 29:27Speaker 8: that's one of the things that we talk about, is
- 29:29Speaker 8: how do we develop this entering college, you know, and
- 29:33Speaker 8: how to begin to find some interest so you can
- 29:36Speaker 8: enjoy college and have a great time and be successful
- 29:39Speaker 8: and move on with life. College level a little bit different,
- 29:43Speaker 8: you know, as a former college athlete myself, I mean,
- 29:46Speaker 8: you know, we always want to play pro right, everything
- 29:49Speaker 8: person that I've worked with, it's all about, hey, I
- 29:52Speaker 8: want to get to the next level. Not everybody is
- 29:54Speaker 8: that lucky or talented, right, But that reality, it becomes
- 30:00Speaker 8: a little bit more of a difficult conversation. I Mean,
- 30:04Speaker 8: we talk a lot about issues with stress and pressure,
- 30:08Speaker 8: confidence anxiety, performance anxiety, what to do when you have
- 30:14Speaker 8: a slump. You know, if you're a baseball player and
- 30:17Speaker 8: you're one for twelve, you know, and you're only playing.
- 30:20Speaker 8: What if it's not games or whatever it is like
- 30:22Speaker 8: that hurts doubts they're watching. So sometimes it works out
- 30:29Speaker 8: for him, sometimes it doesn't. And I see more anxiety
- 30:34Speaker 8: and depression and identity issues with my college athletes than
- 30:38Speaker 8: I do my high school athletes. Now, my experience in
- 30:43Speaker 8: the pros is a little bit different. Their dedication is
- 30:49Speaker 8: like no other. And Carl, I know you're an ex
- 30:52Speaker 8: NFL guy, and you probably know that better than anybody,
- 30:55Speaker 8: but the ones that I've worked with at the NBA level,
- 30:59Speaker 8: Major League Baseball Tour, that is a very difficult thing
- 31:02Speaker 8: because you are all in. This is your livelihood. You
- 31:05Speaker 8: are a professional athlete. The women on the Women's Tour,
- 31:11Speaker 8: same thing. They're all in. Everything is about that and
- 31:14Speaker 8: they have to be to performance highest level. But when
- 31:17Speaker 8: it's done, there's a tremendous transition. There are all kinds
- 31:24Speaker 8: of identity issues. We talk about who am I now?
- 31:27Speaker 8: If I am not this person, if I am not
- 31:31Speaker 8: in front of the crowd, I don't hear sixteen thousand cheering,
- 31:35Speaker 8: What do I do if don't ask me for my autograph?
- 31:38Speaker 8: I'm just a regular schmo down a cruise and through Starbucks,
- 31:42Speaker 8: and you know, I'm under the radar. People are used
- 31:47Speaker 8: to pampering me as a professional athlete.
- 31:52Speaker 1: And let me say something to that point, I think,
- 31:55Speaker 1: I think for the professional athlete, I think the hardest
- 32:00Speaker 1: part of that is somewhat the recognition. But what comes
- 32:06Speaker 1: with that recognition when you're playing.
- 32:10Speaker 2: And when you get done, there's an expectation.
- 32:14Speaker 1: I think for certain certain types of players, I don't
- 32:18Speaker 1: have an adjective to give them, but that there there's
- 32:22Speaker 1: an expectation that they they belong, they should, you should
- 32:27Speaker 1: give me this, you should do these kind of things
- 32:29Speaker 1: for me. And sometimes it's that guy that was maybe
- 32:33Speaker 1: just below great, maybe just good, that guy.
- 32:40Speaker 2: That's in the middle.
- 32:41Speaker 1: It's almost as if he is trying to get the
- 32:47Speaker 1: greatest part of his career when it's done.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Have you have you seen it that way?
- 32:53Speaker 8: Like the guy who is like I want to maximize
- 32:57Speaker 8: my name.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes, I see that with a lot
- 33:02Speaker 1: of guys.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Go ahead, I'm sorry, go ahead.
- 33:07Speaker 1: I was just gonna say I see that with a
- 33:09Speaker 1: lot of guys. That happened all the time. And and
- 33:15Speaker 1: you know we're sitting there talking about him, like, man,
- 33:18Speaker 1: what's why is he tripping like, But I guess there's
- 33:20Speaker 1: the actual real issue there.
- 33:25Speaker 8: Oh yeah, of course there is, because we're trying to
- 33:27Speaker 8: hold on to this identity as a as a as
- 33:29Speaker 8: a pro athlete, as a star, as a as an
- 33:32Speaker 8: almost big star maybe you know, to be recognized. I
- 33:35Speaker 8: mean that strokes the ego pretty pretty solidly. And what
- 33:39Speaker 8: I see is, you know, some of these guys are
- 33:42Speaker 8: trying to get into this business. That business. You know,
- 33:44Speaker 8: podcasts are hot, right people, all I'm gonna do a
- 33:48Speaker 8: podcasts on this podcast on that and so whatever the
- 33:52Speaker 8: hot thing is. But that identity, that ego. You know,
- 33:57Speaker 8: I'm sure somebody's in there here talking about we need
- 33:59Speaker 8: to maximize your name and your dollar. Why we can
- 34:03Speaker 8: for those guys that that's flying under the radar. Not
- 34:06Speaker 8: everybody's a Randy Moss where you know the look, the name,
- 34:11Speaker 8: you see him, you know who it is, right. There
- 34:13Speaker 8: are a lot of guys that from the you know,
- 34:15Speaker 8: in the NFL, major League Baseball, you walk right by
- 34:18Speaker 8: him and if you're not you know, really into that
- 34:21Speaker 8: team or followed him or that, you don't know who
- 34:23Speaker 8: that is. And maximizing it is important.
- 34:28Speaker 1: We actually have some golf on and which makes me
- 34:31Speaker 1: think of Tiger Woods. What is when you when you
- 34:34Speaker 1: think about him, what you're seeing in him? Now, where
- 34:38Speaker 1: do you think he Where do you think he is?
- 34:43Speaker 2: Well?
- 34:43Speaker 8: I think he's imploding, to be honest with him, which
- 34:46Speaker 8: concerns me. I mean, I think that Tiger is one
- 34:50Speaker 8: of those once in a generational lifetime. I think Michael
- 34:56Speaker 8: Jordan may be another guy that we can put up there,
- 34:59Speaker 8: but us so immensely blessed with talent and success, the
- 35:03Speaker 8: hard work and paid off. He was at the pinnacle,
- 35:06Speaker 8: and he imploded slowly but surely in just unbelievable ways.
- 35:14Speaker 8: And I think part of what we're seeing, because I've
- 35:17Speaker 8: had several people ask me about this recently, I think
- 35:21Speaker 8: part of it is he's in so much pain that
- 35:25Speaker 8: his judgment is influenced by the things he's putting in
- 35:28Speaker 8: his body. Other people have asked me why in the
- 35:32Speaker 8: heck is he driving? Because he's in control. He's a
- 35:36Speaker 8: control guy. He's always been a control guy. That's that's
- 35:40Speaker 8: what was a huge part of his success. So giving
- 35:43Speaker 8: that up is not easy. You know, my grandfather lived
- 35:47Speaker 8: in ninety five years old and he drove till he
- 35:51Speaker 8: was ninety five years old. It was frightening, but he
- 35:57Speaker 8: did so. Tiger's you know, Tiger's used to be in control.
- 36:01Speaker 8: He's used to writing that narrative. But I don't think
- 36:05Speaker 8: he's thinking clearly. And I think he is in a
- 36:07Speaker 8: tremendous amount of pain. And I think by not competing,
- 36:12Speaker 8: he is all out of source. I think the tg
- 36:16Speaker 8: L was great for him. Uh, to see him compete
- 36:20Speaker 8: in the championship. I knew for sure he was going
- 36:23Speaker 8: to play the Masters, and then he had the car accident. Yeah,
- 36:28Speaker 8: you know, and that's a heck of a blow. Always
- 36:31Speaker 8: been a Tiger fan. I hope for speedy recovery and
- 36:35Speaker 8: from the mental side, the emotional side and the physical
- 36:38Speaker 8: pain side for him as quick as possible, but very
- 36:41Speaker 8: difficult when you're on top like that.
- 36:44Speaker 5: Hello, doctor, this is This is Lisa Odie. I'm one
- 36:47Speaker 5: of the hosts here on the on the podcast. Thank
- 36:48Speaker 5: you so much for for coming on tonight. I'm gonna
- 36:51Speaker 5: I'm gonna change change gears a little bit here. So
- 36:55Speaker 5: we've all watched, you know, a game, whether it would
- 36:57Speaker 5: be you know, basketball, football, whatever sport it is is,
- 37:00Speaker 5: and we've seen an athlete make a huge mistake that
- 37:05Speaker 5: probably you know, sometimes costs the team the game, or
- 37:08Speaker 5: you know, just it's it's you know, you watch it
- 37:12Speaker 5: in the NCAA tournament. You know you've seen players that
- 37:15Speaker 5: because of what they did, their team probably lost the game.
- 37:18Speaker 5: How do you help those athletes regain their confidence after
- 37:22Speaker 5: they make a massive mistake or have a public loss
- 37:25Speaker 5: like that. Are there are there some methods that you
- 37:27Speaker 5: used to help them get their mojo back, so to speak.
- 37:32Speaker 8: Yeah, that's a great question. I think one of the
- 37:35Speaker 8: first things that we have to do in a situation
- 37:38Speaker 8: where we have failure is we have to accept it,
- 37:41Speaker 8: right like acceptance being here are the facts. We're going
- 37:46Speaker 8: to strip judgment, We're going to strip opinion away. And
- 37:48Speaker 8: sometimes that's really hard, you know, because all all athletes
- 37:53Speaker 8: want to be successful. Nobody wants to fail, nobody wants
- 37:57Speaker 8: to let their teammates down. But in this instance, we
- 38:00Speaker 8: take a look at I was watching the Yukon women's
- 38:03Speaker 8: scene over the weekend and I can't remember who was that.
- 38:07Speaker 8: She went in for a layup and she missed it
- 38:08Speaker 8: late in the game. It was a critical myss and
- 38:11Speaker 8: she turned around and she ran down the court in tears, yeah,
- 38:14Speaker 8: and you know she felt it instantly. But if we
- 38:19Speaker 8: go back and we look at the tape of that game,
- 38:21Speaker 8: there are so many plays right that didn't happen that
- 38:26Speaker 8: all contributed. And that's that's one thing we do is,
- 38:30Speaker 8: you know, I kind of let them process and get
- 38:32Speaker 8: it out. Tell me exactly what you think, and then
- 38:34Speaker 8: we're going to go back and we're going to take
- 38:37Speaker 8: an honest, factual look at, you know, the game to
- 38:40Speaker 8: match whatever it is, and we're going to learn from it.
- 38:44Speaker 8: And I'm a true believer in learning in sport, learning
- 38:48Speaker 8: in life obviously, but learning in sport, and that takes
- 38:52Speaker 8: some humility. We look at it and we go I
- 38:57Speaker 8: messed that up. I missed that call, I missed that tackle,
- 39:00Speaker 8: I missed that sign. I wasn't prepared, I was out late, right,
- 39:04Speaker 8: I was doing this, I was doing that. I you know,
- 39:07Speaker 8: I didn't make good judgments outside of my sport leading
- 39:11Speaker 8: into it. We have to own it, and that's that's
- 39:13Speaker 8: a part of it. But I think one of the
- 39:15Speaker 8: things that's key is can we own it without being
- 39:19Speaker 8: a bad person? M hmm, right, But let me and
- 39:22Speaker 8: separating that is really important.
- 39:25Speaker 3: And I think at least to another you know, topic
- 39:28Speaker 3: within that. You know, I'm I play quarterback in college
- 39:31Speaker 3: and I've coached quarterbacks, and I think that when you're
- 39:34Speaker 3: looking at positions like a goalie in soccer or hockey,
- 39:37Speaker 3: a quarterback, a pitcher, even I would say baseball players
- 39:41Speaker 3: in general, because you know, as much as it is
- 39:43Speaker 3: a team sport, when you're at the you know, when
- 39:45Speaker 3: you're batt and you're by yourself, how what what what
- 39:49Speaker 3: advice or what methodologies exercises do you use in order
- 39:53Speaker 3: to get players who are in high pressure positions to
- 39:58Speaker 3: you know, relax, get in the flow state, and just
- 40:02Speaker 3: to be able to play and sort of get outside
- 40:04Speaker 3: of their heads.
- 40:06Speaker 8: Yeah, that's a great question too. It's really multifaceted. One
- 40:11Speaker 8: of them really is in preparation. What are we going
- 40:14Speaker 8: to do to prepare? How do we have purposeful practice
- 40:16Speaker 8: leading into competition like that? Yeah. One of the things
- 40:22Speaker 8: you always hear Derek Jeter talk about when asked about
- 40:25Speaker 8: how he was able to perform at the highest level
- 40:28Speaker 8: at the highest moment is his dedication to practice mirror
- 40:34Speaker 8: there so that he felt comfortable in those situations. So
- 40:38Speaker 8: one of the things I work with my athletes on
- 40:40Speaker 8: is let's just not go you know, I don't want
- 40:42Speaker 8: to go to the range. Just hit balls for five
- 40:45Speaker 8: six hours and think like that's going to help me.
- 40:49Speaker 8: It might actually do the opposite. In fact, it does
- 40:52Speaker 8: quite a bit. Or our quarterback, right, where's my film study?
- 40:57Speaker 8: And if I say I studied film, how did I
- 41:00Speaker 8: study film? Am I studying film properly? Or am I
- 41:05Speaker 8: just kind of looking at stuff thinking like okay, I
- 41:07Speaker 8: kind of got to feel for what they do and
- 41:08Speaker 8: how they do it, and you know, we'll roll from that,
- 41:10Speaker 8: I know, in the check out of this if they
- 41:12Speaker 8: roll in the cover two or you know, or are
- 41:16Speaker 8: we really looking at some things? Am I looking at?
- 41:18Speaker 8: When do I need to you know, check down for
- 41:21Speaker 8: the line, make a move there? When do I need
- 41:23Speaker 8: to audible to play? What specifically am I doing that's
- 41:27Speaker 8: helping me be more knowledgeable and confident in my preparation
- 41:33Speaker 8: leading into you know, into my you know, game match
- 41:37Speaker 8: whatever it is. The other side of that is, I
- 41:41Speaker 8: think in any sport we need to be active learners.
- 41:45Speaker 8: The more that we're actively learning during a game, during
- 41:49Speaker 8: a match, the less I'm going to personalize.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Wow. I like that. I like that.
- 41:56Speaker 5: That's really good.
- 41:57Speaker 8: The less yeah, the less I personal lies, the more
- 42:02Speaker 8: in the moment I can stay.
- 42:05Speaker 3: So so just just to build on that, because for
- 42:07Speaker 3: people listening, you said actively listen, and then you related
- 42:11Speaker 3: that to not personalizing what's going on. So just explain
- 42:16Speaker 3: that a little bit more so people can catch it.
- 42:19Speaker 8: Yeah, So, like, you know, if I'm playing baseball and
- 42:22Speaker 8: I'm up there and the guy's blowing ninety five at me,
- 42:25Speaker 8: you know, and I'm you know, I'm way late, and
- 42:30Speaker 8: my focus isn't on. Okay, hey, we've got we've got
- 42:34Speaker 8: to increase timing here. And I'm coaching myself up above
- 42:38Speaker 8: all and learned, Hey, it was a little faster than
- 42:40Speaker 8: what I saw in the on deck circle. If I
- 42:43Speaker 8: go into oh god, I'm not fast enough for this guy,
- 42:47Speaker 8: like I can I can't catch that. Oh God, what
- 42:49Speaker 8: am I going to do? All right, Well, maybe I gotta,
- 42:52Speaker 8: you know, do this, do that now. All of a sudden,
- 42:54Speaker 8: I went from stepping in the box very focused to
- 42:58Speaker 8: after one pitch, my mind is going in twenty different
- 43:02Speaker 8: directions and I'm not focused.
- 43:04Speaker 2: It's such a great tool.
- 43:08Speaker 8: So and then and then if I have a failure
- 43:10Speaker 8: in that at at Well, now I'm really down on myself.
- 43:13Speaker 8: And does that carry out on the field, and how
- 43:16Speaker 8: do we You know, one of the things I talk
- 43:17Speaker 8: about is, you know, part of this approach prevents that
- 43:20Speaker 8: domino effect. Yeah, right, If I have a bad at bat,
- 43:25Speaker 8: then I go out and then man, I get a
- 43:28Speaker 8: ground ball or fly ball and I make an error. Well,
- 43:31Speaker 8: now I've just hurt my team twice. Now I'm really
- 43:34Speaker 8: kicking mind from my backside, right Like, I'm really upset
- 43:36Speaker 8: with myself and I'm out of the game. I'm not
- 43:40Speaker 8: a part of it, and I'm not helping my teammates
- 43:42Speaker 8: at that point. And we can take any sport. Watch
- 43:46Speaker 8: a quarterback who throws an interception. How they respond to
- 43:49Speaker 8: that interception when they go to the sideline will tell
- 43:52Speaker 8: you a lot about where they are in their confidence,
- 43:56Speaker 8: in their skill, in their mindset, and in their leadership.
- 44:00Speaker 1: I was just it's funny that you brought that up,
- 44:03Speaker 1: because I was sitting here and I was listening to that,
- 44:05Speaker 1: and I'm and I can see I can remember guys
- 44:09Speaker 1: who made a mistake, not even a major one, but
- 44:13Speaker 1: they made a mistake, and now they come to the sideline,
- 44:17Speaker 1: they don't want to talk to anybody. It's like like
- 44:19Speaker 1: they they like they shut themselves off. And what you're
- 44:23Speaker 1: saying is there's not a real reality for them to
- 44:26Speaker 1: be able to get back into the game, get back
- 44:28Speaker 1: to the player that you thought you were going to be,
- 44:32Speaker 1: because you're you're you don't now you're not trusting yourself.
- 44:35Speaker 1: You're not like you're still fighting that last play. You're
- 44:38Speaker 1: not using your analytical skills you figure out what happened. Yeah,
- 44:42Speaker 1: used and how many times? How many times has the
- 44:45Speaker 1: coach said forget the last play?
- 44:47Speaker 3: But I think, but I think coaches say forget the
- 44:50Speaker 3: last play, but there's no follow up to say, Okay,
- 44:54Speaker 3: this happened and this is why that happened.
- 44:56Speaker 2: You see what I'm saying.
- 44:57Speaker 1: I getting there's no follow up.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Yeah, the coach doesn't have a philosophy on how you
- 45:06Speaker 2: forget that.
- 45:08Speaker 5: It tells you yeah, and the domino effect, I mean
- 45:13Speaker 5: that that that you can you can take that and
- 45:15Speaker 5: just put it in real life terms. You know, because
- 45:18Speaker 5: you're at work and something goes bad and then you're like,
- 45:20Speaker 5: well that was my fault, and then you know, you
- 45:22Speaker 5: can't focus, you can't concentrate, and it just keeps it
- 45:25Speaker 5: just keeps, the ball keeps rolling and then you have
- 45:27Speaker 5: a really bad day. So that's basically, you know, in
- 45:31Speaker 5: taking it to layman terms, what you're saying with athletes,
- 45:33Speaker 5: it's the same thing basically.
- 45:36Speaker 8: Absolutely. You know the the lay person that you know,
- 45:39Speaker 8: something happens on the way to work or at home
- 45:42Speaker 8: before they get into work, and you know if they
- 45:44Speaker 8: make a comment, well, this day is going to stuck right, Well,
- 45:48Speaker 8: that's a domino effect right now. After that, I'm looking
- 45:51Speaker 8: at anything that's possibly negative. That's another domino on my
- 45:54Speaker 8: way for today.
- 45:56Speaker 3: So so what advice you know, maybe a parent they
- 45:59Speaker 3: have haven't gone to see a sports psyche college as yet,
- 46:02Speaker 3: they have a you know, a youth athlete or maybe
- 46:04Speaker 3: a high school athlete. What advice other than that, because
- 46:08Speaker 3: I think what you've laid out so far is just
- 46:10Speaker 3: it's gold. Particularly like I said, not taking it personal.
- 46:14Speaker 3: Be more analytical than you are emotional, figure out you
- 46:17Speaker 3: know what's going on as opposed to you know it's
- 46:21Speaker 3: you or what have you. But what general advice would
- 46:23Speaker 3: you give to parents on how to manage their their
- 46:25Speaker 3: younger youth athletes.
- 46:28Speaker 8: Yeah, one of the discussions I have with parents, is
- 46:31Speaker 8: we have to have realistic expectations. Not everybody's Tiger Woods,
- 46:36Speaker 8: Michael Jordan, you know, Peyton Manning, Randy Moss. Okay, let's
- 46:40Speaker 8: just you know, let's let's let's get a perspective, but
- 46:44Speaker 8: also let's let's get them with coaches that match who
- 46:47Speaker 8: they are. I'll tell you a quick story. I had
- 46:49Speaker 8: a little eight year old guy that was a pretty
- 46:52Speaker 8: good ballplayer. I guess was on a travel team. Is
- 46:55Speaker 8: Mom brings them in after they went to perfect game
- 46:59Speaker 8: in Atlanta, and then they went down to Disney the
- 47:02Speaker 8: play and this poor little guy didn't play one inning of.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Disgusting.
- 47:13Speaker 8: He was throwing up in the hotel room because he
- 47:17Speaker 8: was so anxious and afraid to make a mistake in
- 47:21Speaker 8: an error. And the coach was the main culprit because
- 47:26Speaker 8: he's screaming at him.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Wow.
- 47:28Speaker 8: And finally I told Mom, I said, listen, I said,
- 47:32Speaker 8: you leave him on this team. You're gonna hurt this
- 47:33Speaker 8: little guy. And he's a great logo high. I said,
- 47:36Speaker 8: he needs to either hey, quit the team, find another team,
- 47:41Speaker 8: find another sport for right now, but get him away
- 47:44Speaker 8: from this coach because what's happening to him is not
- 47:47Speaker 8: normal and it's hurting him. M m. That's a true story.
- 47:52Speaker 8: And and they ended up quitting this team and getting
- 47:54Speaker 8: away from this coach.
- 47:56Speaker 5: So it had a happy ending.
- 47:59Speaker 2: Thank you know.
- 48:00Speaker 8: And I'm talking to this little guy about it and
- 48:02Speaker 8: he's just buckets the tears. You know. Who doesn't want
- 48:04Speaker 8: to play at Disney?
- 48:06Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 48:07Speaker 2: Smart?
- 48:07Speaker 8: Right, I mean, sign me up.
- 48:10Speaker 5: Well, I have one more question for you, doctor, if
- 48:12Speaker 5: you don't If you don't mind, so, so your experience,
- 48:16Speaker 5: it sounds like you've worked with all levels from Little
- 48:18Speaker 5: league on to college and and pro level. You've worked
- 48:20Speaker 5: with all different ages and types of athletes. So, in
- 48:24Speaker 5: your opinion, what is one of the most crucial yet
- 48:28Speaker 5: probably overlooked mental skill sets that you need in sports
- 48:35Speaker 5: to be successful or not be successful? But do you
- 48:39Speaker 5: have one particular personality trait you feel like is.
- 48:46Speaker 8: That's a great I don't know if I've ever been
- 48:47Speaker 8: asked that question. Let me think.
- 48:50Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 48:51Speaker 2: I didn't mean to throw you for a No.
- 48:53Speaker 8: It's great. Yeah, I mean, this is this is what
- 48:55Speaker 8: I want to know. Well, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm
- 49:02Speaker 8: gonna give you a little more than you asked for.
- 49:06Speaker 8: The willingness to accept there is no perfection, but to
- 49:12Speaker 8: drive you can get.
- 49:15Speaker 5: Wow, that's true, right there, you nailed it.
- 49:18Speaker 1: See and you have and to that, you have people
- 49:23Speaker 1: who are afraid of what the potential might be. They
- 49:28Speaker 1: may have the skill set, but what they're worried about
- 49:33Speaker 1: is what if I don't make this play? What if
- 49:36Speaker 1: I don't do this? And they're more likely not going
- 49:41Speaker 1: to do anything because of that risk.
- 49:45Speaker 5: It holds them by.
- 49:46Speaker 8: It holds them by, holds them back tremendously. Right a
- 49:50Speaker 8: major league baseball player talking to me about we were
- 49:54Speaker 8: talking about the game tonight and then immediately shifts into
- 49:59Speaker 8: how next Tuesday he's got to face Kershaw and Kershaw's
- 50:03Speaker 8: hook has always gotten them, And I'm.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Like, take care of this point we got.
- 50:14Speaker 8: Now, yeah, let's play the night.
- 50:18Speaker 3: And in this environment where we have not only just uh,
- 50:22Speaker 3: you know, the pressure to win and perform well, which
- 50:25Speaker 3: that's always going to have been there, but now we
- 50:28Speaker 3: have added pressure when you have social media, when you
- 50:31Speaker 3: have all eyes on you, when you know a great
- 50:34Speaker 3: play could be on you know, ESPN Top ten and
- 50:37Speaker 3: a bad play could you know, be all over the internet.
- 50:40Speaker 3: What what are you some of your thoughts or how
- 50:42Speaker 3: do you manage and navigate athletes do that?
- 50:45Speaker 1: And before you ask that, I want to before you
- 50:47Speaker 1: answer that, I want to ask the question, is that
- 50:51Speaker 1: even possible to navigate when you know that's with that person,
- 50:57Speaker 1: that that person has that Is there something that you
- 51:00Speaker 1: do and what is that to solve.
- 51:03Speaker 8: That to not be affected by what's going on? Yes, yes,
- 51:12Speaker 8: we've got to We've got to convince them, and I
- 51:15Speaker 8: try to do this that if you can't manage that,
- 51:20Speaker 8: if you don't have the mental and really honestly emotional
- 51:24Speaker 8: skills to handle that, then we have to limit that
- 51:29Speaker 8: and come off of that. And I'll be honest with you.
- 51:31Speaker 8: I've had this conversation with several too many pro athletes
- 51:35Speaker 8: where they're coming in and they are hot about some
- 51:40Speaker 8: person that they don't know that's probably sitting in a
- 51:45Speaker 8: requiner somewhere, but they just roasted them on you know,
- 51:50Speaker 8: Instagram or this and that and then and I'm like,
- 51:54Speaker 8: what are you doing? And it's like a reality check.
- 51:59Speaker 8: But because of some of the younger athletes that have
- 52:03Speaker 8: I think grown up with this natural social presence, because
- 52:11Speaker 8: of the phones and because of these platforms, I think
- 52:16Speaker 8: that they feel like that's a natural transition. You know,
- 52:19Speaker 8: many of them in the recruiting process. What do they
- 52:23Speaker 8: do They post their videos? Yeah, right, So we're encouraging
- 52:28Speaker 8: them on one side of it to advertise themselves, market themselves.
- 52:32Speaker 8: But on the other side of it is, hey, don't
- 52:34Speaker 8: listen to that critical comment that Joe or Salish Mo
- 52:37Speaker 8: made over there on that whole thing. So we take
- 52:41Speaker 8: a look at the impact on them, and I kind
- 52:44Speaker 8: of use some humor, you know, and and and get
- 52:47Speaker 8: them to kind of laugh like, yeah, it's that is
- 52:50Speaker 8: completely silly that I'm letting somebody that I will never meet,
- 52:53Speaker 8: don't know, upset me this much or makes me question myself.
- 52:58Speaker 3: Yeah, right now, now you know I didn't give you
- 53:01Speaker 3: a chance to We've kind of went right into it.
- 53:04Speaker 3: So if you could doc like, uh, just kind of
- 53:07Speaker 3: run us your resume and your contact information just in
- 53:10Speaker 3: case maybe anybody would like to, you know, schedule appointment
- 53:13Speaker 3: up if you have openings or or like to talk
- 53:16Speaker 3: to you, or maybe you can for fur them out.
- 53:19Speaker 8: Yeah, no, absolutely. My uh my office number is seven
- 53:23Speaker 8: zero four five zero three three five three five and
- 53:29Speaker 8: my email is my name b R I A n
- 53:33Speaker 8: AT b R I A N M O N T
- 53:38Speaker 8: E L E O n E dot com and also
- 53:42Speaker 8: connects it to my website. You can find me. But
- 53:46Speaker 8: I've been I've been fortunate enough to you know, be
- 53:49Speaker 8: a college baseball player. I was very, very fortunate in
- 53:54Speaker 8: my residency to spend a year with the Olympic Sports
- 53:59Speaker 8: psychologist out of Roanoke, Virginia. We work with the women's
- 54:03Speaker 8: Olympic fencing team. Wow, it was just I got very
- 54:10Speaker 8: lucky to work with doctor Hyle in that in that capacity.
- 54:14Speaker 8: And I have been working with athletes since graduate school.
- 54:20Speaker 8: And uh, I have all Americans at the high school level.
- 54:24Speaker 8: I have all Americans national champions at the collegiate level
- 54:28Speaker 8: in several sports. I have a Master's champion in golf
- 54:33Speaker 8: that that I was lucky enough to work for with
- 54:35Speaker 8: for a few years, and a variety of sports. I
- 54:42Speaker 8: even Charlotte has a a roller derby team. And one
- 54:50Speaker 8: time I got a phone call and I'm like, I
- 54:53Speaker 8: will probably work for free just to meet you guys.
- 54:58Speaker 2: Situations My grandma used to love relevant.
- 55:03Speaker 8: Unfortunately they had come in so I was so so
- 55:07Speaker 8: at the resume builder for sure.
- 55:10Speaker 3: And before we let you go, you know, recently, the
- 55:12Speaker 3: NFL Roger Goodell, he mandated that every team, you know,
- 55:16Speaker 3: have a mental health professional. I don't know if it's
- 55:19Speaker 3: like a sports psychologist, but a mental health professional on staff.
- 55:22Speaker 3: So do you see that something that's going to be,
- 55:25Speaker 3: you know, just sort of standard practice, not only at
- 55:29Speaker 3: the professional ranks, but maybe even down to the high
- 55:31Speaker 3: school ranks.
- 55:32Speaker 8: Yeah, I would love to see that be something that standard.
- 55:35Speaker 8: I mean I know that, you know, I like to
- 55:38Speaker 8: affiliate myself with with you know, high school and college
- 55:42Speaker 8: college athletes down there, and have built a network, which
- 55:45Speaker 8: which is great. But I think there's two pieces to this.
- 55:48Speaker 8: And Carl you you might be able to jump in
- 55:50Speaker 8: on this too, because I find this with my athletes
- 55:53Speaker 8: that that find me through their agents and and things.
- 55:56Speaker 8: But they as much as I think that out of
- 56:00Speaker 8: a valued resource on any team, NFL, team, MLB, whatever,
- 56:07Speaker 8: players are very suspicious about talking to employees going on
- 56:14Speaker 8: with them right for fear that there is no confidentiality
- 56:19Speaker 8: and that their privacy will be exploded and it's going
- 56:23Speaker 8: to be all over the team's business. The coach is
- 56:25Speaker 8: going to find out YadA, YadA, YadA, you know, up
- 56:28Speaker 8: to the owners and So, you know, one of the
- 56:30Speaker 8: things that I think in my position, you know, being
- 56:34Speaker 8: in private practice and being you know, kind of separate
- 56:37Speaker 8: from any team, is that I hold to them that
- 56:41Speaker 8: confidentiality will be upheld.
- 56:45Speaker 2: You know.
- 56:45Speaker 8: I was. I was in contact with the president of
- 56:48Speaker 8: one of the NBA teams out on the West Coast,
- 56:51Speaker 8: and the player that I was working with, I said,
- 56:55Speaker 8: you can tell me what you will allow me to
- 56:59Speaker 8: tell him or not. And that made him feel a
- 57:02Speaker 8: whole lot better knowing that we could just talk. So
- 57:08Speaker 8: as much as I am a tremendous advocate for mental
- 57:12Speaker 8: health on every team and every sport up and down,
- 57:16Speaker 8: high school, college and pro, there are some drawbacks. Carl Right, Yeah,
- 57:21Speaker 8: would you go in there and talk about some things
- 57:25Speaker 8: to the mental health professional you know that's employed by
- 57:28Speaker 8: the Vikes.
- 57:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I would be hesitant because even I mean back
- 57:34Speaker 1: in my day, even going to the trainer and saying
- 57:38Speaker 1: something's hurt and he goes to the coach and tells
- 57:41Speaker 1: him that, oh, we don't think he can play.
- 57:43Speaker 2: Now I'm out.
- 57:43Speaker 1: I mean, I think there's a lot of at least
- 57:47Speaker 1: old school players would not be willing to step out
- 57:52Speaker 1: and get any kind of no, I'm good. I'm fine,
- 57:56Speaker 1: don't worry. My mental health is good. And I think
- 57:59Speaker 1: that's probably a big problem that we're having. That that
- 58:02Speaker 1: that we're having now with former athletes is they won't go.
- 58:08Speaker 8: Yeah. And and honestly, that's the former athletes, particularly some
- 58:11Speaker 8: of the NFL guys that I've worked with. We're we're
- 58:15Speaker 8: flat out honest with me. They're like, doctor, if I
- 58:17Speaker 8: met you when I was playing, I wouldn't said a
- 58:18Speaker 8: word to you, nodded to you, walk buy you, and
- 58:21Speaker 8: I would have never come in there. If you did
- 58:24Speaker 8: a training, I might ask you a question or two
- 58:26Speaker 8: that was generic, be nice to you, and I'm gone,
- 58:30Speaker 8: I'm not talking to you because of exactly what you're
- 58:33Speaker 8: talking about. For fear, that's something we get back to
- 58:36Speaker 8: the coach or the ownership that would negatively impact them.
- 58:38Speaker 2: And there's a lot of players that don't. They don't
- 58:40Speaker 2: want to know if something's wrong. They don't.
- 58:43Speaker 1: They don't they're not interested in that, and that's that's
- 58:46Speaker 1: an unfortunate situation. But the reality of that is, you know,
- 58:51Speaker 1: they want to just live their life and for as
- 58:53Speaker 1: long as they got and they don't even want to
- 58:54Speaker 1: get checked. They don't want to, you know, I mean,
- 58:56Speaker 1: because how do you not go get Like when you
- 58:58Speaker 1: got an opportunity to get checked out everything and you
- 59:02Speaker 1: don't go and it's free, you don't know, I mean,
- 59:06Speaker 1: that's a healthcare expensive.
- 59:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:08Speaker 8: So, Doc, so I sent guys to Raleigh to go
- 59:11Speaker 8: get go get the full exam Carl.
- 59:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm like you got you right?
- 59:15Speaker 8: You are you are forty five fifty fifty five years old.
- 59:18Speaker 8: You need to know what's going on with you?
- 59:20Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 59:21Speaker 3: Yeah, And Doc, could you just like give us your
- 59:23Speaker 3: your contact information one more time? Because I would really
- 59:26Speaker 3: like to. As much as we have been talking about
- 59:28Speaker 3: athletes on this segment, I think particularly has it relates
- 59:32Speaker 3: to youth and and you know, younger athletes, we could
- 59:35Speaker 3: probably the parents probably need to be involved as much
- 59:37Speaker 3: as as much as the athletes do to sort of
- 59:40Speaker 3: build that perspective and help, you know, navigate that emotional
- 59:43Speaker 3: and mental health side of their children. So could you
- 59:45Speaker 3: give your contact information one more time?
- 59:48Speaker 8: Oh? Absolutely, thank you? Seven zero four five zero three
- 59:53Speaker 8: three five three five. And then my email is b
- 59:57Speaker 8: r I A n AT b r I A N
- 1:00:02Speaker 8: M O n E E L E O n E
- 1:00:07Speaker 8: dot com all right, funny story about that. I actually
- 1:00:11Speaker 8: got fired because I was working with a female golfer
- 1:00:18Speaker 8: and her dad was the issue mm hmm. And I
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: told him and he did not like that. I'm sure
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: he did not get fired.
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: I probably need to seek out your services, doctor, because
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: Carl fires me every week, so I probably need some therapys.
- 1:00:44Speaker 8: The lights over there, So.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: We did, we did well, Thank you, doc.
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: It's created and we definitely want to get you back
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: on as we try to navigate this thing, because I
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: think we're just seeing it more and more, particularly like
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: you know, we've had a couple of suicides and different
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: things of that nature. So it's definitely something to be
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: talked about more.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Well.
- 1:01:02Speaker 8: I appreciate you guys having me on and I would
- 1:01:04Speaker 8: love to participate whenever you thought I might add some
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: value than.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 1:01:11Speaker 8: All right, you take care of.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Thank you you too. Yeah, that was awesome man.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: To get that kind of information, To have an opportunity
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: to get that kind of information is to me is
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: like it's critical, and especially young athletes you you know,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: and and I hate I hate to talk about football
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: like it seems like it's a negative. But if you're
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: playing football and you are an aggressive type player quote
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: a good player.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: You know, there's some there's.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Possibilities that you know, you could have some issues or
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: you could you could eventually get them.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: You need to make sure that you.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: Get yourself checked as much as you possibly can, just
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: so that you you're aware, because man, I mean, you know,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: I've got I mean there's a ton of guys that
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: I play ball with who man, they don't even like,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: you know, they don't they don't know.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: Who you are.
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: Yeah, And I look and I kind of look at
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: it maybe from more the intellectual standpoint as far as, like,
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: you know, getting that athlete right for to be competitive,
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: and like he said, don't personalize everything within the game,
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: like you have to really make sure that you are
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: engaging in the game, engaging in practice. That's going to
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: be very intentional and as he said, purposeful, so that
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: way you can get the information, get the data that
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: you need, so that way your performance can be at
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: a higher level. So I think just you know, post game,
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: whether you you know you're you're done playing the game,
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: or whether you're in the game, or maybe even before
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: you start, this type of help can really propel you
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: to where you want to go.
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: I mean I thought everything you said made sense. You know,
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: I I would hope that maybe. I don't know if
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: Charleston has, you know, someone with his type of qualifications
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: for our athletes, but it would be nice if if
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: we could have somebody like that available for our personal
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: athletes here in.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: That's a musk, that's a mus I don't think we
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: have one. I don't think I have one.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: I don't.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: But but do you know whether or not coaches necessarily
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: would send.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: Well, I don't think it would be on the cap. Well,
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: let me not, let me not say that.
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: I think if there was one available who was known
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: to help athlete absolutely, particularly like I said, if I
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: have a quarterback, a picture, a linebacker, they have those
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: critical positions in which I need would I know you
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: could perform at a high level, but you have some
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: sort of mental block, not necessarily like you're not you
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: don't have a mental You know a lot of healthy
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: you just you just need some some.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: Guidance along that line.
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: And like I said, even to help the team, even
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: to help you as a coach to be a better coach.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: I think definitely parents and coaches, because I've had several
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: people asked, but I was like.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: I don't know of one.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: I mean, I know in general, you know, and the unfortunately,
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: from a state wide perspective, we have a shortage of
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: psychologists and therapists just in general, so you know, And
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: that's why I had he can give us information, because
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: maybe he could reach out and have a couple of
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: telephone calls and try to help someone white athletes.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: Chair Well, ladies and gentlemen, we're glad you joined us
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: today and we will be back again next week. We're
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: out of here.
