- speaker-0: Hey, welcome in Average Home Theater. I am Nelson. speaker-1: Hey everybody, it's producer Dick. speaker-0: We are here to talk about well, it's another episode of speaker-1: We've already watched it. That's right. ⁓ speaker-0: And this episode, as you can see in the title, before you even clicked on this, is nineteen seventy one's Dirty Harry. speaker-1: Yes, we finally watched Unclean Herald. ⁓ Callahan? Callahan. ⁓ Yeah, this is something that I mean, the famous lines and all that stuff feel like everyone has seen this, I guess but us. And I'm ⁓ just in general, I'm kinda wary sometimes about watching older movies like the movies from previous generations. ⁓ speaker-0: Aria, what's his last name? speaker-1: But I had been on a on a Clint Eastwood kick lately, been watching some old spaghetti westerns and then some of his newer westerns and ⁓ some of the movies that he's made, which I don't the movies that I've seen, I haven't seen Clint Eastwood, ⁓ a badly made ⁓ nope, Clint Eastwood director, producer, whatever. and then I I came across the Dirty Harry collection. I did not realize that there were five movies in this series. speaker-0: Me neither. I thought there was only one. I didn't realize it was like it was a a series type thing. speaker-1: Yeah. I knew there was more than one but I didn't realize there were five. I didn't so I came across this ⁓ this series, this set I mean, on Amazon for about forty dollars, forty five dollars and I kinda started asking around ⁓ one of the guys at work, ⁓ his he's into the he's a little bit older than we are and this is kind of more his generation and ⁓ was asking about the Dirty Harry movies and he said, Yeah, they're great and the first one is the best one. So I figured why not? get that something new, expand the horizons a little bit. And ⁓ I watched it and I think you watched it like a couple of weeks later maybe. speaker-0: ⁓ yeah, like maybe two days later. Not that long after. speaker-1: Yeah, yeah. So yeah, we we finally have seen at least the first ⁓ Dirty Harry movie. speaker-0: So I I guess it's because it you know, pop culture and everything. I I I really had no idea what it was about. I just knew Clint Eastwood was a police officer. ⁓ I thought he was a little bit more rogue than he is. He's not really rogue. He's just hard nosed. ⁓ speaker-1: Yeah, he's he means he's he's no nonsense. He gets down to speaker-0: Right. He's an old fashioned cop's cop type thing. speaker-1: And you find out why they call him Dirty Harry, it's not because he's a ⁓ speaker-0: Well, kind of. It's almost speaker-1: Well there's there's a couple of different explanations. There's a couple of different explanations, but it's not I always thought that he was like borderline like a dirty officer, a dirty cop. But it's not that he gets he gets the dirty jobs. He gets he gets the stuff that no one wants to do. Which explains why, you know, he he maybe causes some problems for the chief and for the mayor, but they keep asking him to do things. Right, right. There was no one else that could go and deliver this money. speaker-0: Not just no one else, he's he's got the balls to do it. They're like, Hey, you wanna go ⁓ be the money guy to drop it off? Yeah. Yeah, like he doesn't even think about it. Like, yeah. You know. He ⁓ he helps somebody ⁓ from trying to commit suicide. ⁓ speaker-1: Yeah. He does it a little unconventionally. speaker-0: Well, you know what I've noticed throughout the movie, I saw there's no doubt you realize how many tropes of modern or later movies came from this. That's right. I saw a lot of lethal weapon in this movie. speaker-1: Lethal weapons, some some diehard. Yep. ⁓ some things like just just about and it probably you know, Dirty Harry probably got it from somewhere else, maybe a little bit, but yeah a lot speaker-0: No, man, nineteen seventy one, that's kinda early to be ⁓ you know, that that's Hollywood was in a transition. speaker-1: Movies been around a long time, man. speaker-0: But they were going from black and white to ⁓ and and being like, hey, look, see, you know, that type of stuff. And and the acting was getting better. Everything so that late 60s, early 70s, it was a big transition in h in Hollywood, it seems like. And ⁓ this is kind of like the beginning of the modern or, you know, cop movie type thing. I mean, yeah, they of course they had detective shows, but this seems like it was It was an early starter of what we of like Lethal Weap 'cause Lethal Weapon came out, what, not even ten years after this? So, you know, there was a lot of it was like the beginning of that type of stuff is what it seems like. speaker-1: Lots of ⁓ lots of movies and franchises saw this and took notes apparently. speaker-0: ⁓ of course. I mean it's and look, we're watching it fifty five years later or whatever. Yeah. So can you imagine fifty five years ago what this was like seeing this? I mean, it's like wow, you know? Yeah. speaker-1: And I look, I mean we haven't really gotten into it just yet, but I I really enjoyed it. speaker-0: Yeah, ⁓ yeah, I enjoyed it. ⁓ my camera. speaker-1: I enjoyed it. ⁓ I'm not gonna say more than I thought I would, but ⁓ it was it was it was different. It was different than what I was expecting. ⁓ I I really enjoyed ⁓ as most movies like this, the villain makes the movie, I really enjoyed the villain. ⁓ Yeah, Scorpio, the Scorpio killer. He was ⁓ he was crazy and did terrible things. Mm-hmm. I really enjoyed the character of Dirty Harry Callahan. We you finally get to see speaker-0: ⁓ he was so good. Scorpio. speaker-1: You know, do you feel lucky in that you've seen you've heard that line over and over again. The interesting part about that is ⁓ when it when it fur he says it twice in the movie. Twice. Yep. ⁓ the first time he was at he's just hanging out at a grabbing a a a lunch or something and it was a bank robbery across the street. And he says it to the guy and the way he delivers the line, it's like, Man, I've I've seen this before, I've heard this before. This is not what I remember seeing and hearing. So was a little it was a little weird and then he says it at the end with the Scorpio Scorpio killer and then it just it just hits like ⁓ that's that's the version that I've heard. That's the version that I remember. speaker-0: Like Luke, I am your father, which is incorrect, but that's what most people say. You know, it's kind of ⁓ it it's almost what they say, but it's not quite. speaker-1: Yeah. Well it's ⁓ it was just 'cause the first like when he does it the first time it's more not comical, but the second time he says it like he's he's angry and he's mad and it's delivered with a lot more force and that's the one you're used to hearing. So that was that was kinda neat. ⁓ speaker-0: Yeah, he kinda winks at the first guy at the after ⁓ when he realizes the the weapon is empty, he goes like speaker-1: type thing. Yeah. But it was ⁓ it was it was very enjoyable. It it was a little long. ⁓ I remember thinking it it was a little long. speaker-0: Yep. But you know me with my complaints, you know, a movie can overstay its welcome really, you know, if you're gonna have a two hour movie, it it's gotta be really good. And this one seems like they could have trimmed out a little bit. ⁓ so I did I had no idea the movie was about a sniper serial killer. So that was kind of neat to see that. Once I realized within the first what, 10 minutes you're introduced to that, I was like, ⁓ okay, that's kind of cool. speaker-1: Yeah, same. At at first you kinda go into it thinking it was just the the the ⁓ the everyday happenings of they just kinda follow this guy around and the stuff he gets into, but it's it's a single case. He's working a single case. ⁓ so yeah, that was that was different. I I didn't realize that either one going into it. speaker-0: ⁓ I like the kind of you know, with buddy cop type movies where he he doesn't want a partner. I haven't a partner. The only one I ever work with, he's he's gone to mend 'cause he just got shot. So I don't need another partner. So then they give him Gonzales and young s snot nosed college kid with the hard nose. speaker-1: Something else that you've seen repeatedly since then in those in those kind of movies. Yep. Yeah. And he's like ⁓ the guy they partner him with, he's like he's a college guy. He's ⁓ not a whole lot of experience, but he's he's very book smart. Yeah. Yeah. And then at the end he ends up like this sh this ain't for me. speaker-0: Got a psychology to You know, I don't think this is for me. Yeah. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah, the i it was it was good though, I think the the scene where they're they think they have a beat on the guy and he's kinda following him down the street. He's standing in a trash can trying to look into a house, into an apartment, whatever, thinking they've got the guy and some people see him and start beating the crap out of him. Beat the crap out of him. I I think that was pr probably my favorite scene. speaker-0: Yeah, that's pretty funny. Well, it humanizes the character. Yeah. You know, and I when he was chasing him, I was like, Man, this is awfully convenient in San Francisco. You just happen to be driving by where the killer is. And of course it's not, but yeah, it it it kind of brings to light police work, you know. I mean Yeah, people and I'm gonna get a little personal here where people don't really understand police work. ⁓ just because you see speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-0: police videos on YouTube and body cam footage doesn't mean you know anything. And it I I I really enjoyed watching this 'cause ⁓ even though it's not quote unquote maybe too realistic, it's probably more realistic than people realize. Yeah. Because I mean this was nineteen seventy one. ⁓ speaker-1: I thought the same thing while watching it. The the access like we have access to so much technology now. They didn't have any of that back then and like the actual legwork and and ⁓ investigation and all that stuff it took to and then sometimes you gotta just get lucky. yeah, I I enjoyed that aspect of it. The way the way things used to be. speaker-0: Investigating a crime is a lot of ⁓ instincts, it's a lot of gut feelings, and that is all absolutely true. Police officers are not robots, like people seem to think. They make mistakes, which Harry makes a mistake in this movie. I really enjoyed seeing that, where it cost him his arrest and it let him go free. And so I don't know. I I I r it it went places that I had no idea would go. You know, 'cause you know, typical Hollywood, I mean Mel Gibson. He'll kill like five people a lethal weapon during a chase scene and I've never seen him fill out a lit lick of paperwork, you know. speaker-1: He's at his house chilling in that afternoon. speaker-0: Right, that afternoon he's home, you know, nobody's questioning him about what happened. So Yeah. ⁓ I don't know. I I really appreciate a lot of that stuff in it. speaker-1: Yeah. It was it it seemed realistic. You know? It wasn't it wasn't far fetched like you said, exploding buildings and then, you know, going home to the to the wife and kids later that day. He got in Yeah. Yeah, he wasn't inventing. speaker-0: But kicked more than once. 'Cause I mean, you you think Clint Eastwood, I I was thinking he was just gonna be especially at the beginning or during the scene, right before he does the Do I Feel Lucky? He got shot in the leg and he continues to walk across the street with a wound in his leg, you know? Yeah. So I was like, Okay, is this the kind of movie it's gonna be? But it really doesn't do that, you know. speaker-1: Yeah. It was ⁓ it was it was pretty good. I I really I really did enjoy it. I'm looking it's my understanding that this is for the most part people's favorite of the five movies. But I'm looking forward to ⁓ to continuing to watch ⁓ I this is the only one I've seen so far. But ⁓ over the next couple of weeks or so I'm gonna a few weeks. speaker-0: Yeah, I know the second one has to do with maybe some dirty police officers. You know, real dirty police officers type thing. ⁓ my dad was like, ⁓ dirty Harry, that's the one with he's going after police officers, right? And I was like, No. But when I looked up Magnum Force, right. So apparently that's the one he was thinking of. ⁓ so and then the third one, they're going after like some ⁓ he's some Some kind of criminal organization that's a bunch of Vietnam veterans. So I'm sure that one's kind of interesting. I'd I'd like to see that. ⁓ but no, I I I really enjoyed it. I the music, we didn't talk about the music. We that's like some ⁓ some retro adult cinema music, it sounds like now I don't know how I would know what that sounds like. speaker-1: Think just everything sounded like that. speaker-0: That was like wow ticket, no water ticket, no wild ticket wow. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah, I thought the same thing. Like what's what's about to happen in this? Why is it really called Yeah. ⁓ Yeah, the yeah, the music was was good. It's just ⁓ just takes you back. It's a different ⁓ a different time. speaker-0: Yeah. So speaker-1: Yeah, very, very enjoyable. Looking forward to watching the rest of ⁓ speaker-0: And they take on ⁓ race in here. ⁓ they take on ⁓ sexuality. I mean, it is San Francisco, so they take on, you know, there's a sexuality thing in there. ⁓ religious, the the Catholic priest ⁓ is a target type thing. So, you know, they tackled lots of issues that it's kinda like, Man, that's nineteen seventy one. You know, and speaker-1: So yeah, things like that were happening then too. speaker-0: That's correct. So people think that what's going on right now is unique. ⁓ this is crazy. This is a crazy world we live in. speaker-1: We've never had these problems before. speaker-0: You know what the difference is? Social This is the difference. Well, it's not just social Internet. We have access to see things that are going on that's not our immediate bubble. So y it just seems like ⁓ all this crazy stuff. It's always happened. I mean speaker-1: Internet. There's we just have stuff? We just have instant access to it now. speaker-0: Now we have instant access. As soon as it happens, you can see it. You get alerts. I mean twenty speaker-1: Four hour news cycle. speaker-0: If you'd have told Clinton Eastwood in nineteen seventy one, before he dies, this type of technology is gonna be around, he probably would have said we were crazy. Yeah. You know, he there's no way those people back then would've thought that they would live to see this, you know. speaker-1: Instant access to information and and millions upon millions of experts on everything. Right. Opinions. speaker-0: Mm-hmm. I mean look two experts right here giving y'all expert opinions on film. speaker-1: The only two experts you'll need. speaker-0: I mean we just we need to keep growing guys. We need to keep on growing because this is where you come to get your your solid information about entertainment. speaker-1: He is totally unbiased. Yeah. So yeah. Dirty Harry, Clini Clini's Wood. speaker-0: What do you rate this, Nicholas? I'll let you go first. speaker-1: All things considered, I I I I think I I think I'd give this one a seven, a strong seven. I I I did enjoy it. A little long, a little I I kinda lost focus a couple of times in the the middle to middle end. But all in all speaker-0: After gets caught and then he l gets let out. It kinda Yeah. And I I'm glad they did it because like I said, it brings a an element of realism, but it did kind of make the movie drag a little bit. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. A little bit of the back and forth could have maybe been cut out. But ⁓ yeah, I I'd give it a s I I'm okay with a seven. I'm o g okay with giving it a seven. How about you? It's a match. speaker-0: Well So I'm gonna go ahead. Yeah, yeah, that's my Kristen Wig impression. ⁓ I'm gonna go ahead and go speaker-1: Exactly. If I would have closed my eyes and I would have thought speaker-0: Well, Jamie Ray actually uses Kristen Wiggs you know, that sound bite. He uses that a lot in his ⁓ on his show. I just figured I would give my best my best ⁓ real impression. I'm here for the real stuff, folks. It was amazing. Yeah, I'll I give it a seven as well. ⁓ had it been a little bit shorter and a little bit more streamlined, it probably could have crept in at eight because this is an important movie and it is You could tell fifty five years ago this movie was just awesome. So, you know, it's it's a little dated in certain aspects and some of it is maybe the length. But I I really enjoyed it. speaker-1: I mean like we said, look at the look at the ⁓ the imitators that it that it spawned. Mm-hmm. Lots of that stuff came from this and that era, that genre. So good to Yep. It's good to finally get our education. We finally watched it. speaker-0: We finally watched it. Now we're not going to review the rest of them, but I do want to watch them. I think that'll do it for this episode of We Finally Watched It. speaker-1: Yep, we're the only people in America that had not watched Dirty Harry. If you haven't if you haven't seen it, if you're like us and you haven't have lived under a rock and haven't seen it, then ⁓ check it out. It's it's it's a good it's a good ride. speaker-0: I know, man. It's a good important movie. I think ⁓ anybody who loves cinema, no matter what age you are, you need to watch it. It's it's it's an important movie. Yeah. speaker-1: Stood the test of time for sure. speaker-0: Well, like, subscribe, tell your friends, and we'll catch you on the next one. speaker-1: See ya.
