- Lucas: Hey there. It is so good to be back with you. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, we are really glad to have you here. Luna: Yeah. I am just sitting here looking at my apartment plants. They look a little sad today. Lucas: Oh no. Do they need something? Maybe a trip to the garden center would help them. Luna: That is a good idea. But I do not know what to say when I get there. Lucas: We will fix that. Today we are going to learn four simple phrases for shopping for plants. Ready? Luna: Ready. Let us go to the garden center. Lucas: Okay. The first thing you might want to know is if a plant is meant for indoors. The phrase is: Ist das eine Zimmerpflanze? Luna: Ist das eine Zimmerpflanze? Lucas: Perfect. It means 'Is that an indoor plant?' You can point to a leafy green one and ask this. Luna: Ist das eine Zimmerpflanze? Lucas: Exactly. So if you see a beautiful fern on a shelf, you can ask the shop assistant: Ist das eine Zimmerpflanze? Luna: Ist das eine Zimmerpflanze? Yes. That makes sense. I want to keep my plants inside. Lucas: Right. And once you buy it, you need to know how to care for it. The next question is about water. Luna: How much water does it need? How do I say that? Lucas: It is very similar to the last one. We say: Wie viel Wasser braucht es? Luna: Wie viel Wasser braucht es? Lucas: Spot on. 'Wie viel' means 'how much'. 'Wasser' is water. 'Braucht es' is 'does it need'. Try it again slowly. Luna: Wie viel Wasser braucht es? Lucas: Yes. Exactly. So you can walk up to the counter and ask: Wie viel Wasser braucht es? Luna: Wie viel Wasser braucht es? Okay. I think my cactus gets too much water actually. Lucas: Ha! Well, you can still use the phrase. It is good practice. Now, let us talk about light. Luna: Do plants like sun? Or shade? Lucas: Some do. Some do not. To ask if it needs a lot of sun, we say: Braucht es viel Sonne? Luna: Braucht es viel Sonne? Lucas: Great pronunciation. 'Braucht' is needs. 'Es' is it. 'Viel' is a lot. 'Sonne' is sun. Put it together. Luna: Braucht es viel Sonne? Lucas: Perfect. So if you see a tropical plant with big leaves, you might ask: Braucht es viel Sonne? Luna: Braucht es viel Sonne? I love that phrase. It sounds very polite. Lucas: It is. And finally, every plant needs good soil. In German, soil or earth for gardening is called Erde. Luna: Where can I buy soil? Is that hard to ask? Lucas: Not at all. We use the verb 'können' for can. The phrase is: Wo kann ich Erde kaufen? Luna: Wo kann ich Erde kaufen? Lucas: Beautiful. 'Wo' is where. 'Kann ich' is can I. 'Erde kaufen' is buy soil. Say it one more time. Luna: Wo kann ich Erde kaufen? Lucas: Yes. Exactly. So at the end of your shopping trip, you can head to the aisle and ask: Wo kann ich Erde kaufen? Luna: Wo kann ich Erde kaufen? Oh, I feel like a real gardener now. Lucas: You are. Let us review them quickly. First, to check if it is indoors. Luna: Ist das eine Zimmerpflanze? Lucas: Second, asking about water. Luna: Wie viel Wasser braucht es? Lucas: Third, asking about sunlight. Luna: Braucht es viel Sonne? Lucas: And fourth, finding the soil. Luna: Wo kann ich Erde kaufen? Lucas: You did it. Those are four solid phrases for your next visit to the store. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. I am going to try these out this weekend. My plants will be so happy. Lucas: They will. And remember, we deliberately don't run ads on these episodes. If you want to support that choice, the link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah. It really helps us keep making these small lessons for you. Thanks for listening. Lucas: So, back to our plant adventure. Once you have bought the soil, what is the next step? Luna: Well, I probably need to repot it. But that is a conversation for another day. Lucas: Agreed. For now, just practice those four questions. Repeat them until they feel natural. Luna: Ist das eine Zimmerpflanze? Like a mantra. Lucas: Or just repeat the whole set. Wie viel Wasser braucht es? Braucht es viel Sonne? Wo kann ich Erde kaufen? Luna: I think I have them memorized. Thank you so much for teaching me this. Lucas: Anytime. Keep your plants happy and your German happier. See you next time.
