- 0:34Hi, and welcome to the Justice Team Podcast on the Justice Team Network.
- 0:37I am guest host Mikayla Dixon today, and we have an incredible guest, Megan Valez.
- 0:43Hello.
- 0:44Hi.
- 0:45If you could just introduce yourself a little bit and tell us, uh, what
- 0:48you do, who you are, where you work.
- 0:50I am Megan Valez.
- 0:52I work for the Drake Law Firm as a child attorney, and I very much enjoy what I do.
- 0:57Thank you for having me.
- 0:58Of course.
- 0:58We're so excited to have you.
- 1:00I. Um, have had the privilege of just getting to know you a little bit, and
- 1:04I feel like the word that like truly stands out with you is resilience.
- 1:08That's so funny because I just got a tattoo of resilience
- 1:11on my side for shut up.
- 1:13Yes.
- 1:13Wait,
- 1:14shut up.
- 1:14I
- 1:14swear to God.
- 1:16I literally like, like from the second we started talking, like it just like
- 1:19you exude that and I think that there's so much strength in that and I kind
- 1:23of want this episode to be you talking about your life experience and how that
- 1:30makes you the attorney that you are.
- 1:32Um, and that is a very big, it's like a very big umbrella.
- 1:37You're like, so go.
- 1:38Um, I think just like.
- 1:40Like so often attorneys are a little bit afraid to just be like human beings.
- 1:45Yeah.
- 1:46Um, and just in the conversations I've had with you and what I've gotten to
- 1:50see out of like the kind of advocate that you are, is that like you pull
- 1:54from your lived experience to be able to show up for your clients?
- 1:57Absolutely.
- 1:58And so maybe if you wouldn't mind talking about kind of your journey to law and what
- 2:03really got you interested in it so that we can kind of start going deeper into that.
- 2:07Absolutely.
- 2:07I mean, aside from the, the cheesy TV shows the Law and order, the CSI for sure.
- 2:12Obviously I wanted to, that's what started my interest in law.
- 2:16And then it wasn't until I got into my first car accident, I would think I was
- 2:2019 years old and I was like, I've never had a hire an attorney for anything.
- 2:25I don't even know what I would need one for.
- 2:26Mm-hmm.
- 2:27So I reached out to one of my college girlfriends and I said, Hey, like
- 2:31I, I need somebody who can help me.
- 2:32And she was like working for this attorney at the time.
- 2:36And she said, you know, come in.
- 2:38It was like seven o'clock on like a Friday evening or something like that.
- 2:41Oh wow.
- 2:42And I got signed up.
- 2:43I asked all the questions that I need, and I ended up funny working for
- 2:47that attorney after my car accident.
- 2:50Yeah.
- 2:50All throughout law school.
- 2:51Oh my God.
- 2:52What a full circle.
- 2:52Yeah, completely.
- 2:54I think that like, that's something that we forget as attorneys a lot
- 2:57of the time is like our clients, their very first experience with
- 3:00an attorney is likely the one that they're having right then and there.
- 3:02Correct.
- 3:03And so I think.
- 3:04You have an incredible like perspective of like, you know what
- 3:08it's like to be an advocate and you know what it's like to be a client.
- 3:12Yeah.
- 3:12And so how does that interact with like your ability to advocate for your clients?
- 3:17Absolutely.
- 3:18Just how you said, you know, this is probably the only experience
- 3:21and interaction they've ever, ever needed to hire an attorney for.
- 3:24So by me letting them know, look, I've been in your position
- 3:26before, not once, but twice.
- 3:28Like I know what it's like to have your life completely derailed, put on pause
- 3:32for, you know, however, six months, a year, two years, whatever it may be.
- 3:37But just to let them know that this is temporary.
- 3:40There is a light at the end of the tunnel.
- 3:41What can we do to get you, you know, set goals.
- 3:44You know, some of my clients were division one soccer athletes.
- 3:48They were, you know, very active in.
- 3:51Whatever their, their sport hobby was and the fact that they can't do that anymore.
- 3:55I just to see the decline on their mental health because they can't do that.
- 3:59I'm like, look, let's get you there.
- 4:00You know, if you can kick a ball or just stand up and be on a soccer field mm-hmm.
- 4:05In the next six months, like, we'll take it like these little baby steps,
- 4:09like you'll get there, let's set goals.
- 4:11And then they see like the end of their, their case and the result and, you know.
- 4:15They're able to slowly get back into it.
- 4:17That's what makes me the happiest.
- 4:19I could literally feel it from you.
- 4:21Like, we're not gonna cry.
- 4:24It's a safe space.
- 4:25Um, I feel like.
- 4:26That's something that I was gonna ask and I think you kind of touched on
- 4:30it, of like, do you tell them that you have been in their shoes before?
- 4:33Absolutely.
- 4:34Absolutely.
- 4:34And I feel like this is something that, like someone had told me in the
- 4:37past, um, like I had been questioned 'cause like I've been through
- 4:41things and like I am open about it.
- 4:43And I think that like, because I have been through something, I have a different
- 4:47perspective and a different passion of how you can show up for someone.
- 4:50Mm-hmm.
- 4:50And someone asks like, do you think you're too close to it?
- 4:52To be able to do that, and it, and I like told you this example already,
- 4:57but it's like, it's like telling a woman like, oh, because you're a woman,
- 5:00like you can't really be a feminist.
- 5:01Like you're too close to it.
- 5:02Yeah.
- 5:02It's like, no, like that's exactly why I'm in this position
- 5:05is because I want to, they
- 5:06hire us as personal injury attorneys to talk for guidance.
- 5:09Yeah.
- 5:09Yeah.
- 5:10They're relying on us to navigate them through this entire
- 5:13process, and I basically let them know, look, I work for you.
- 5:16Mm-hmm.
- 5:16What can I do to make this easier for you?
- 5:19Let me know what you need.
- 5:20We'll get through this together.
- 5:21Like you have my personal cell phone number.
- 5:23Call me on the weekends.
- 5:24I wanna know how your kids are doing.
- 5:25I wanna know how your family's doing.
- 5:27Like, give me these life updates so they know that you're okay.
- 5:29Yeah.
- 5:30And I think something that like is important is we are human beings, right?
- 5:34Yeah.
- 5:35And we are attorneys.
- 5:36And I think that you do yourself a disservice when you only look
- 5:38at your client as a client, right.
- 5:40Because they're a human being too.
- 5:41Yeah.
- 5:41And it's like the more you know about their family, the more you
- 5:44know about their day to day, the better position that you are in
- 5:47to be able to advocate for them.
- 5:49Exactly.
- 5:49Because it might not have been something that came up in a routine,
- 5:52kind of like intake question or the discovery things where it's like.
- 5:55Yeah, but like, what's it like interacting with your kids and
- 5:58things where it's like you're a human being, interacting with your family.
- 6:01Like, I wanna know those things.
- 6:02And even if you're talking more casually, it's not like a, a discovery call.
- 6:06You're just like checking in, like seeing how you're doing.
- 6:09The, the more vulnerable they're able to be with you, the better
- 6:12advocate you can be for them.
- 6:13I wouldn't be able to tell their story at trial if I didn't know about their
- 6:16family, their kids, their upbringing.
- 6:19All of that.
- 6:19Yes, yes.
- 6:21And I think too, it's like nice when they know that their attorney is a human.
- 6:25Yeah.
- 6:25And I think that sometimes people shy away from that, or it's like,
- 6:28no, I need to exude the strength.
- 6:29I need to exude.
- 6:30Like, I am impervious.
- 6:31Like I, you know, I'm here, I'm an attorney.
- 6:34And it's like, but you're also a human being.
- 6:36And I think that they feel like safer opening up.
- 6:39I would hope so.
- 6:40Yeah.
- 6:40That's my goal
- 6:41is making them feel like I'm not just their attorney.
- 6:43I'm, I'm their friend.
- 6:44I'm fam consider me as family.
- 6:46Yeah.
- 6:47Yeah.
- 6:47And I think that like the fact that you had experienced like a
- 6:51traumatic experience of your own, you know how to pull from that.
- 6:55Absolutely.
- 6:55And it's like, you know what you needed in those moments and you either show
- 6:59up in that way or you show up where you felt like there might have been gaps
- 7:01or you show up in just a more authentic way or, you know, questions to ask
- 7:05that maybe other attorneys wouldn't.
- 7:07Yeah.
- 7:07I've always had a more positive mindset.
- 7:08I mean, aside from the car accident, I've, you know, beat breast cancer before, so.
- 7:14There's a type of mindset you have to have.
- 7:16Yeah.
- 7:16Again, knowing that this is temporary, we're gonna get through this, you
- 7:19know, what does the future look like?
- 7:21Like I have bucket list goals that I still want to complete, and I
- 7:23tell the same thing to my clients.
- 7:24I'm like, I, I get it.
- 7:26You're in probably the worst situation that you are in right now in your life.
- 7:30We'll get through it together.
- 7:31Like what does the future hold?
- 7:32Stay positive.
- 7:33Call me if you want to just chat to vent.
- 7:35Yeah.
- 7:36You know what, what, who is your support system?
- 7:38And not, the sad part is not a lot of them have that.
- 7:41Support system, either from coworkers or you know, their friends, or especially
- 7:44from the, from my male clients.
- 7:46Yeah.
- 7:46They are taught to, you know, be that strong person.
- 7:50We, we can't go and ask for help.
- 7:52Mm-hmm.
- 7:52And so I let them know like, you have to, you have to ask for help.
- 7:55Yeah.
- 7:56And sometimes it's like.
- 7:58Like, do you find that clients sometimes are like, well, I just don't wanna
- 8:01fixate on like the negative, like, you do have a positive outlook, you know?
- 8:05And so when it's like, okay, yes, but this is temporary.
- 8:08Yeah.
- 8:08Like, think about where you're gonna be five years from now and like.
- 8:11F you know, like focus on, like you are bettering yourself for future.
- 8:14You, do you help, kind of like in, do you feel like you inspire your clients
- 8:18to also kind of have that mindset?
- 8:20I would hope so, yeah.
- 8:21I would hope so.
- 8:22I, I am very open.
- 8:22I feel like you're inspiring me right now.
- 8:24I'm very open.
- 8:25I'm probably too open with my clients, with my own personal experiences,
- 8:28and I'm just like, look, like, what?
- 8:30What do you need from me?
- 8:31Like, you have to stay positive.
- 8:34If they're in such a negative mindset right now.
- 8:37Mm-hmm.
- 8:37You know, their life is, some of 'em are on bedrest for three, four months.
- 8:40Yeah.
- 8:41And when you don't, like, for me, like when, from my car accident when
- 8:44I wasn't able to go to the gym and work out and run like that takes a
- 8:48toll on your mental health 110%, so.
- 8:51Mm-hmm.
- 8:51I can only imagine what they're going through.
- 8:53They're miserable.
- 8:55And I, again, I'm just like, this is temporary.
- 8:57Like, let's look to the future.
- 8:59Like your health is the most important thing.
- 9:00Like, we're not doing this to win the lottery.
- 9:02Right.
- 9:02We're not doing this.
- 9:03For a pay cut, for a paycheck.
- 9:05I'm sorry.
- 9:06And I let them either right off the bat.
- 9:08I'm like, you let me know when you're good.
- 9:10Yeah.
- 9:11And, and you feel like you know, you've got the treatment that you need.
- 9:14And then we will talk about together on how we wanna resolve your case.
- 9:16But my priority is getting you back to a point where you can play soccer again.
- 9:21You can go to the gym.
- 9:22Yeah.
- 9:22You can take care of your family.
- 9:24Good.
- 9:25I feel like those like conversations are so important and I don't
- 9:28wanna go past this, but you're cancer free how many months?
- 9:31Yes.
- 9:32Uh, 16 months I believe.
- 9:33That's incredible.
- 9:36That's incredible.
- 9:37And like I think like you have been through life, a lot of life and I think.
- 9:44The, the fact that you are still able to and want to show up and
- 9:49advocate for others when you are also have been in a position for
- 9:54so many, like, so much time of just trying to advocate for yourself also.
- 9:57Yeah.
- 9:57And, and survive each day.
- 9:59Like the fact that you chose to also still show up for other people is incredible.
- 10:04I remember walking into Kaiser, you know, at 30 years old and
- 10:07I'm like, hi, I need a mammogram.
- 10:09And they're like, I'm sorry, how old are you?
- 10:12So again, having to advocate for myself and letting my doctors know like, this is
- 10:15what I need, this is what my concerns are.
- 10:17Yeah.
- 10:18Having my mom just finished her battle of breast cancer, I
- 10:20was like, this needs to happen.
- 10:22Absolutely.
- 10:23So now
- 10:23I'm such an advocate for all women.
- 10:26I don't care how old you are, how young you are.
- 10:29Take care of your bodies, check your boobies.
- 10:31Yeah.
- 10:31Make sure you get your mammograms every year.
- 10:33No, absolutely retweet.
- 10:35Yeah.
- 10:35And just the fact that like you were even in a position where
- 10:38you had to advocate for yourself or have to like ask to be heard.
- 10:43Yeah.
- 10:43By someone that's supposed to already be doing that for you.
- 10:45Yeah.
- 10:45That's hard.
- 10:47And I also find, and I don't know if you relate to this, but like it's so much
- 10:50easier to advocate for others than myself.
- 10:53Absolutely.
- 10:53I tell everybody else, I'm like, take care of yourself.
- 10:55Take care of your bodies.
- 10:56And we forget that.
- 10:57We also are important too.
- 10:59Yes, absolutely.
- 11:00What was it like for you, like actively going through a tough
- 11:05time, also showing up for other people, going through a tough time?
- 11:08I used work as kind of an escape from my own personal tribulations
- 11:14that I had to go through.
- 11:15Yeah.
- 11:15I mean, again, when work, I genuinely love what I do, so it doesn't feel like work.
- 11:19You know, I was.
- 11:20Working throughout.
- 11:22I didn't have to do chemo knock on one, but I had to do radiation and I was
- 11:25working full-time throughout my radiation as much as I could because that was my
- 11:29escape from me dealing with the cancer.
- 11:32I was like, you know, if I can help my clients, if I can go to a mediation,
- 11:35if I can, you know, get through, settle a cup of cases and make my
- 11:40clients' lives a little bit better and help them move on from this and get
- 11:42some closure, then I've done my job.
- 11:44Yeah.
- 11:45So.
- 11:46Gut free.
- 11:47That's like, I don't, I don't feel like crying, like that's
- 11:50just like so inspiring, you know?
- 11:52Because like you are literally like choosing to fight for other people and
- 11:58advocate for other people in that time.
- 12:00And I just think that like, that's so admirable and I
- 12:03just like think is a rarity.
- 12:04Also, I know
- 12:05I worked so hard to just get to pass the bar and to get my first job as an attorney
- 12:10and like, I mean I'm five year, I think I got diagnosed when I was two years in as
- 12:14an attorney and I was like, this is, wow.
- 12:16Not gonna derail me.
- 12:18It's not gonna define me, it's not gonna derail me.
- 12:20Like I still have more purpose in life to live.
- 12:23So again, it's temporary.
- 12:25What am I gonna do to get past this?
- 12:26My coworkers at Drake Law were amazing.
- 12:29That's
- 12:29awesome.
- 12:29Great support system with my family.
- 12:31Um, and then, yeah, just seeing my mom literally go through the same exact
- 12:35thing that I just got diagnosed with.
- 12:36It's scary.
- 12:37Mm-hmm.
- 12:38Scary as hell.
- 12:39But I was just like, you know, knock on what They caught it early, you know?
- 12:43And.
- 12:44What are we gonna do to get past this?
- 12:45Yeah, and you're a big part in it getting caught early too.
- 12:48Yeah.
- 12:49So like also good on you for like listening to your intuition and advocating
- 12:53for yourself because I think it's amazing.
- 12:58I think we're all guilty
- 12:59of like how stressful our lives are as attorneys, you know?
- 13:02Okay, we'll go to the doctor, we'll go to the doctor next week, next month.
- 13:06You know, it's in the back of our heads.
- 13:07Yeah.
- 13:08And I'm, I very much tell everybody, I'm like.
- 13:11Take care of yourself.
- 13:12Oh yeah.
- 13:12Well, especially 'cause it's like how often do we have clients where
- 13:15they're like, I'm in so much pain, but I just, I don't have time.
- 13:17And it's like, okay, what are your goals?
- 13:20Do you want to feel better?
- 13:21Yeah.
- 13:21How do you think that that can happen?
- 13:23Mm-hmm.
- 13:24You know?
- 13:24And so it's like, why am I not practicing what I'm preaching when
- 13:28it's like, ah, I just don't have time.
- 13:29Exactly.
- 13:29Or it's like sometimes like going to the doctor kind of
- 13:31feels like a second time job.
- 13:32Oh yeah.
- 13:33Where it's just like when you're done with work, don't you kind of just
- 13:35like wanna like not do something, but it's like, oh no, I have to do
- 13:38all the things I was putting off.
- 13:39And so just like making yourself a priority.
- 13:42Yeah.
- 13:42And being intentional about it.
- 13:43I think we're
- 13:44all guilty of not making yourself a priority at.
- 13:46Some point in time with our career.
- 13:48Oh yeah.
- 13:48'cause we're so focused and passionate about what we do.
- 13:51We forget about ourselves.
- 13:52Yes.
- 13:53Yes.
- 13:54And I also wanna talk about, just because we both majored in the same thing in
- 13:57college, and so I love talking about it, but you are a sociology major.
- 14:00I
- 14:01was, yes.
- 14:01And so.
- 14:02I think that like law is really cool because you can literally
- 14:06major in whatever you want before you go to law school.
- 14:09And there are a lot of people that do like pre-law tracks.
- 14:11I was like, well, if I'm gonna be an attorney, I wanna
- 14:12know how like people work.
- 14:14And so it's like sociology is like the study of interactions and environment
- 14:17and relationships and, and do you feel like having majored in sociology
- 14:22helps you be an attorney also?
- 14:24It helped me understand how to communicate better, I think with people.
- 14:27Yeah.
- 14:27I mean, I'm such an open book as it is and I think if you can relate to
- 14:32somebody, number one, that builds honesty, that builds your credibility.
- 14:35Mm-hmm.
- 14:35And that just makes it easier for me to work with my client 'cause
- 14:39it's, it's a two-way street here.
- 14:40Mm-hmm.
- 14:40You know, yes.
- 14:41I'm advocating for them with the insurance company, with
- 14:43defense counsel, whatever it is.
- 14:44But like, it's a team effort.
- 14:46They've gotta wanna be just as involved.
- 14:48Mm-hmm.
- 14:49As in their cases as I want them to be.
- 14:51So I think.
- 14:53Starting off the bat, you know, when I do my, my welcome to lit
- 14:56litigation, zoom calls with them.
- 14:58Yeah.
- 14:58I explain the entire litigation process.
- 15:00I set their expectations.
- 15:02I'm like, look, your case could resolve tomorrow.
- 15:03It could resolve in three years from now at trial.
- 15:06Mm-hmm.
- 15:06Like, I, I don't have control of that, but we'll see how it goes.
- 15:10I'm like, trust me, what this process.
- 15:13Call me if you have any questions and, and we'll get through this together.
- 15:15Absolutely.
- 15:16Intro to lit zoom call.
- 15:17That sounds amazing and so smart.
- 15:20I like to have that call in the beginning too, where it's
- 15:21like, let's set expectations.
- 15:23Yeah, because first this, if this is your first interaction with an attorney.
- 15:26Exactly.
- 15:27I want to know what your expectations are because if they are ones that I'm never
- 15:31gonna meet, I need to tell you that.
- 15:33And then also if there are expectations I have that maybe you don't feel
- 15:37like you can meet, like we need to know that so that we're not.
- 15:40You know, like not meeting each other's expectations if we've never actually
- 15:43communicated what our expectations are.
- 15:45Exactly.
- 15:45And they
- 15:45get to me two years down the line.
- 15:46Right.
- 15:46And they're like, what?
- 15:48What's going on now?
- 15:49Like, what?
- 15:50What?
- 15:50You know, why didn't my case settle before?
- 15:52Mm-hmm.
- 15:52And I'm like, okay, well this is why we're here.
- 15:54Yeah.
- 15:54What are we gonna do to get it resolved?
- 15:56Yeah.
- 15:56And I think that's so important.
- 15:57And it's like exactly what you're saying where like, I need your help
- 16:01being able to advocate for you.
- 16:03Yeah.
- 16:03I need to know your day to day.
- 16:04I need to know you as a human being so that I can advocate for you.
- 16:08Yeah.
- 16:08And so like just having that kind of open discourse is important.
- 16:12And no, it's not gonna always happen right off the bat.
- 16:14Absolutely.
- 16:14I mean, you don't, sometimes there are people who meet in your
- 16:16life, you're like, oh my God, I think we're gonna be best friends.
- 16:18Yeah.
- 16:18And other times it's like, okay, we get to know each other and it's like, oh wow.
- 16:21Like I really get to like, yeah, see you as the person.
- 16:24It just takes time to like get to that space.
- 16:26Not everyone.
- 16:27Shows up in the same way at the the same time.
- 16:29Exactly, exactly.
- 16:30And like I feel like you are uniquely equipped to be able to like understand
- 16:34that and read that just from like your experience and your background and all
- 16:39of the things like I think that you use as such an incredible like strength.
- 16:44I try.
- 16:45Yeah.
- 16:46It's hard at times, but I try.
- 16:48Seems like you're succeeding.
- 16:50I cannot thank you enough truly for taking the time to be here and be just so open
- 16:56and vulnerable with your experience.
- 16:58And I think that like the way that you show up and the human being
- 17:01that you are and how you treat other human beings is really important you.
- 17:05And just thank you for the work that you do.
- 17:07My pleasure and thank you all for tuning in and we will be back next week.
- 17:12Thank you.
