- 0:12Hello friends. It's shown here.
- 0:14Great to have your company. Thank you for tapping on play.
- 0:17Here we are at Wednesday. How do we get to the middle of
- 0:20the week already? My goodness.
- 0:22But here we are. It is hump day.
- 0:24Hope you're doing well. Hope your week is treating you
- 0:26well. No matter what it is that is
- 0:29coming your way. We are boy in the middle of the
- 0:32intrigue of that time in Israel. It it's hard for us to get our
- 0:36head around, isn't it in in this world of 24/7 Amazon orders that
- 0:41get delivered in a couple of days, if you run out of gas and
- 0:45your BBQ doesn't matter when you just pop down to the local
- 0:47hardware store and get that replaced.
- 0:50But here, you know we yesterday we read about this nation who
- 0:54has no blacksmith, so they can't even sharpen their Spears.
- 0:58But that is a classic situation that God is going to step in and
- 1:03we will see what that looks like today.
- 1:05So let us put down whatever today holds on this Wednesday
- 1:09and open our hearts and say living God, here we are.
- 1:15Come shape us, mould us, lead us, Teach us.
- 1:22You ready, friend? Me too.
- 1:24Let's read together. First Samuel, Chapter 14.
- 1:37One day, Jonathan said to his armour bearer.
- 1:41Come on, let's go over to where the Philistines have their
- 1:44outpost. But Jonathan did not tell his
- 1:46father what he was doing. Meanwhile, soul and a 600 men
- 1:51were camped on the outskirts of Gabia around the Pomegranate
- 1:54tree at Migron. Among souls, men was a height of
- 1:59the priest who was wearing the ephod, the priestly vest.
- 2:03A Hija was the son of Ichabod's brother Ahituv, son of Phineas,
- 2:08son of Eli, the priest of the Lord who had served at Shiloh.
- 2:13No one realised that Jonathan had left the Israelite camp to
- 2:17reach the Philistine outpost. Jonathan had to go down between
- 2:212 rocky cliffs that were called Bosses and Senna.
- 2:25The Cliff on the north was in front of Mick Mash, and the one
- 2:29on the South was in front of Giba.
- 2:31Let's go across to the outpost of those Pagans, Jonathan said
- 2:36to his armour bearer. Perhaps the Lord will help us,
- 2:39for nothing can hinder the Lord. He can win a battle, whether he
- 2:43has many warriors or only a few. Do what you think is best, the
- 2:48armour bearer replied. I'm with you completely,
- 2:51whatever you decide. Alright then, Jonathan told him.
- 2:55We will cross over and let them see us.
- 2:59If they say to us stay where you are or we'll kill you, then we
- 3:03will stop and not go up to them. But if they say come on up and
- 3:07fight, then we will go up. That will be the Lord's sign
- 3:12that he will help us defeat them.
- 3:15When the Philistines saw them coming, they shouted, Look, the
- 3:19Hebrews are crawling out of their holes.
- 3:22Then the men from the outpost shouted to Jonathan.
- 3:25Come on up here and we'll teach you a lesson.
- 3:29Come on, climb right behind me, Jonathan said to his armour
- 3:32bearer. For the Lord will help us defeat
- 3:35them. So they climbed up using both
- 3:37hands and feet, and the Philistines fell before Jonathan
- 3:42and his armour bearer killed those who came behind them.
- 3:45They killed some 20 men in all, and their bodies were scattered
- 3:49over about half an acre. Suddenly, panic broke out in the
- 3:53Philistine army, both in the camp and in the field, including
- 3:57even the outposts and raiding parties.
- 4:00And just then an earthquake struck and everyone was
- 4:04terrified Souls. Lookouts in Gabbia of Benjamin
- 4:08saw a strange sight. The vast army of Philistines
- 4:12began to melt away in every direction.
- 4:16Call the roll and find out who's missing, Saul ordered, and when
- 4:20they checked, they found that Jonathan and his armour bearer
- 4:23were gone. Then Saul shouted to Ahuja.
- 4:27Bring the ephod here, for at that time a hijab was wearing
- 4:32the E fight in front of the Israelites.
- 4:34But while Saul was talking to the priest, the confusion in the
- 4:38Philistine camp grew louder and louder.
- 4:41So Saul said to the priest, Never mind, let's get going.
- 4:45Then Saul and all his men rushed out to the battle and found the
- 4:50Philistines killing each other. There was terrible confusion
- 4:54everywhere. Even the Hebrews, who had
- 4:56previously gone over to the Philistine army revolted and
- 4:59joined in with Saul, Jonathan, and the rest of the Israelites.
- 5:03Likewise, the men of Israel who were hiding in the Hill Country
- 5:07of Ephraim joined the chase when they saw the Philistines running
- 5:11away. So the Lord saved Israel that
- 5:14day, and the battle continued to rage even beyond Beth Avon.
- 5:19Now the men of Israel were pressed to exhaustion that day
- 5:23because Saul had placed them under an oath saying Let a curse
- 5:27fall on anyone who eats before evening before.
- 5:31I have full revenge on my enemies, so no one ate anything
- 5:35all day, even though they had all found honeycomb on the
- 5:39ground in the forest. They didn't dare touch the honey
- 5:42because they all feared the oath they had taken.
- 5:45But Jonathan had not heard his father's command and he dipped
- 5:48the end of his stick into a piece of honeycomb and ate the
- 5:51honey after he had eaten it. He felt refreshed, but one of
- 5:56the men saw him and said your father made the army take a
- 5:59strict oath that anyone who eats food today will be cursed.
- 6:03That is why everyone is weary and faint.
- 6:07My father has made trouble for us all, Jonathan exclaimed.
- 6:11A command like that only hurts us.
- 6:14See how refreshed I am now that I've eaten this little bit of
- 6:17honey? If the men had been allowed to
- 6:19eat freely from the food they found among our enemies, think
- 6:23how many more Philistines we could have killed.
- 6:26They chased and killed the Philistines all day, from
- 6:30Michmash to Agilon, Growing more and more faint.
- 6:34That evening they rushed for the battle plunder and butchered the
- 6:38sheep, goats, cattle and calves. But they ate them without
- 6:42draining the blood, someone reported to Saul.
- 6:45Look, the men are sinning against the Lord by eating meat
- 6:49that still has blood in it. That is very wrong, Saul said.
- 6:55Find a large stone and roll it over here.
- 6:58Then go out among the troops and tell them.
- 7:00Bring the cattle, sheep and goats here to me.
- 7:03Kill them here and drain the blood before you eat them.
- 7:07Do not sin against the Lord by eating meat with the blood still
- 7:10in it. So that night all the troops
- 7:13brought their animals and slaughtered them there.
- 7:16Then Saul built an altar to the Lord.
- 7:19It was the first of the altars he built to the Lord.
- 7:21Then Saul said, let's chase the Philistines all night and
- 7:26plunder them until sunrise. Let's destroy every last one of
- 7:31them, his men replied. We'll do whatever you think is
- 7:35best. But the priest said, let's ask
- 7:39God first. So, Saul asked God, should we go
- 7:43after the Philistines? Will you help us defeat them?
- 7:47But God made no reply that day. Then Saul said to the leaders,
- 7:52something's wrong. I want all my commanders to come
- 7:55here. We must find out what sin was
- 7:58committed Today I vow by the name of the Lord who rescued
- 8:02Israel that the Sinner will surely die, even if it is my own
- 8:06son, Jonathan. But no one would tell him what
- 8:10the trouble was then, Saul said. Jonathan and I will stand over
- 8:14here, and all of you stand over there.
- 8:18And the people responded to Saul.
- 8:20Whatever you think is best then saw, prayed, Oh Lord, God of
- 8:25Israel, please show us who is guilty and who is innocent.
- 8:31Then they cast sacred lots, and Jonathan and Saul were chosen as
- 8:36the guilty ones, and the people were declared innocent.
- 8:40Then Saul said. Now cast lots again and choose
- 8:44between me and Jonathan, and Jonathan were shown to be the
- 8:48guilty one. Tell me what you have done,
- 8:52Sold, demanded of Jonathan. I taste a little honey, Jonathan
- 8:57admitted. It was only a little bit on the
- 8:59end of my stick. Does that deserve death?
- 9:03Yes, Jonathan, Saul said. You must die.
- 9:07May God strike me and even kill me if you do not die for this.
- 9:13But the people broke in and said to Saul, Jonathan has won this
- 9:17great victory for Israel. Should he die, far from it.
- 9:21As surely as the Lord lives, not one hair on his head will be
- 9:25touched, for God helped him do a great deed today.
- 9:29So the people rescued Jonathan and he was not put to death.
- 9:33Then Saul called back the army from chasing the Philistines,
- 9:37and the Philistines returned home.
- 9:40Now when Saul had secured his grasp on Israel's throne, he
- 9:44fought against his enemies in every direction against Moab,
- 9:49Ammon, Edom, the kings of Zoba and the Philistines.
- 9:55And wherever he turned, he was victorious.
- 9:58He performed great deeds and conquered the Amalekites, saving
- 10:02Israel from all those who had plundered them.
- 10:06Soul sons included Jonathan Ishbosheth and Mel Kashiwa.
- 10:12He also had two daughters. Merab, who was older, and
- 10:16Michael Soul's wife, was the Hynum.
- 10:19The daughter of Ahimaaz. The commander of Saul's army was
- 10:23Abner, the son of Saul's uncle Naya, Soul's father Kish and
- 10:29Abner's father Naya were both sons of Abiel.
- 10:34The Israelites fought constantly with the Philistines throughout
- 10:37soul's lifetime. So whenever Saul observed a
- 10:40young man who was brave and strong, he drafted him into his
- 10:44army. Lord, thank you for the gift of
- 10:57peace that you've given us. In our lives we read of these
- 11:01times of conflict, and we know that in our world there is
- 11:06conflict. And we pray that as you were
- 11:09present in these days, and the stories that we read here in
- 11:13Samuel, that you would be present today in these spaces
- 11:17where there is conflict. We don't understand the hearts
- 11:21of those who begin and those who perpetuate these wars, but we do
- 11:26know the hearts of those caught up in them.
- 11:31We know of the loss and the devastation and the hurt and the
- 11:36suffering that seems so needless from many of our perspectives,
- 11:44said Lord. I just pray that you be present
- 11:46in the brokenness of our world, that your Spirit would bring
- 11:50what is needed most to your beloved children.
- 11:55Lord, may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven and
- 12:00whatever it is that we are able to do in our parts of the world
- 12:03today. Lord, I pray that you would
- 12:05place that burden on our heart, that we would bring your Kingdom
- 12:10to be a reality. We love you and we thank you for
- 12:14the gift that you give us of Jesus, His love, His
- 12:18forgiveness, and our ability to know Your character through Him.
- 12:25We pray all this in His name. I'm in.
