- 1:02Blacksburg, boys. It happened to me a few minutes
- 1:06ago. Evening Lavar.
- 1:08My power's flickering, which means I might lose Internet
- 1:10service. So y'all better be on your PS
- 1:12and QS. Already on that shit we.
- 1:15Gonna hold it down, We gonna hold it.
- 1:18Down you might. Lose it too weather acting crazy
- 1:20here. So November rain here.
- 1:24And that is the best 90s ballad treadmill horse.
- 1:27I know you're out there listening tonight.
- 1:28That is the best 90s ballad. At least the ones you listed at.
- 1:32Least the ones you listed. So how's everybody doing?
- 1:36It's Tuesday. It's been raining all day, man.
- 1:39I've been. This is, this is my one and only
- 1:41day of work this week. So you worked.
- 1:44One day. I worked one day.
- 1:45I was working from home today, pretty much making sure that
- 1:48there weren't any fires that needed pudding out.
- 1:51Since it was just I think one other person on our team that
- 1:53was kind of hanging in there. So just just there to provide
- 1:57backup and you know, make sure nothing goes crazy.
- 2:02Thankfully, thankfully, nothing went crazy.
- 2:04So. Sheldon, what about you?
- 2:05I see you're still in Charlotte. You in Charlotte for the
- 2:07holidays? Yeah, so I'm I'm in North
- 2:11Carolina for holidays, going to go to my my family house in my
- 2:15cousin's house in in Apex, NC so, so stay in the Tario state,
- 2:20but I can enjoy the weekend and then I'll be in Tampa, FL this
- 2:23Saturday for the Charlotte football game.
- 2:25They're playing down at South Florida.
- 2:27So going to go see Raymond James Stadium, home of the Town Bay
- 2:31Buccaneers. Looking forward to it.
- 2:33Go find the pirate ship. Go find the pirate ship.
- 2:35Tally. What about you, man?
- 2:36How's the day been? Been pretty good, man.
- 2:38You know it's Thanksgiving week. Time to eat, drink, be merry.
- 2:43All of that stuff. Find you some good moonshine.
- 2:46You may need it. We don't know.
- 2:49Who you rooting for? I don't know who you betting on,
- 2:52but moonshine will make it much better.
- 2:56I was telling Tally before we got on Curtis that tomorrow
- 2:59night is the drunkest night of the year in in the United States
- 3:03of America. More people drink on the day
- 3:06before Thanksgiving, the and the other night of the week of the
- 3:09year. So get get ready.
- 3:13Get like Tally said, get you some moonshine, get you
- 3:15something nice and nice to keep you warm.
- 3:18Maybe we should have divided into tomorrow night.
- 3:20We could have gotten drunk. Let's.
- 3:24Do it again. I can get drunk tonight because
- 3:25I'm not working tomorrow, but you know.
- 3:28I'm working tomorrow. We already got like we already
- 3:33got the phone call, like, yeah, work, work a little while, you
- 3:36can leave a little bit early. 132 you could kind of just start
- 3:41heading out the out the building, yeah.
- 3:43So yeah, all right, lots on load tonight.
- 3:45Y'all. Obviously Hokies lose, as Brian
- 3:48said, the closest blowout ever 3528 against the Wolfpack on
- 3:54Saturday afternoon. So we're going to definitely be
- 3:58talking about that. We're definitely going to tell
- 3:59the truth Tuesday. We are also going to be breaking
- 4:02down UVA Little hate week here. A lot of hate pouring out.
- 4:07A lot of hate started with their fucking loudmouth quarterback on
- 4:12Saturday afternoon. I better be in every fucking
- 4:15locker room with that. Everybody's, everybody's,
- 4:18everybody's for a little thing, but let's flip news and notes
- 4:21before we kick over to tell the truth.
- 4:23Choose down. Let's start with hoops and let's
- 4:25talk about men's. Basketball they down wall for
- 4:28just the other night by I believe 20.
- 4:30Plus I saw bits and pieces of that game.
- 4:33They shot well. Little shocker, Boise tomorrow
- 4:37or Thanksgiving night and then Auburn Lumen next week.
- 4:40I'm going to kick it to all of y'all.
- 4:43If the Hokies go blank, they will have a good season over the
- 4:50next. Two in those games.
- 4:52In those two games. It's so hard to say in
- 4:56basketball because it doesn't matter until conference play
- 4:58starts. Like that's where you figure out
- 5:00who your team is. So if we had to put something on
- 5:04it, one and one, but even if they if they go O and two, I
- 5:09don't think it defines the season.
- 5:13I think they got to win too. I mean I'm just projecting for
- 5:15the ACC tournament because they don't really have a ton of
- 5:18opportunities for quality wins assuming they don't beat Auburn.
- 5:21So depends, I don't, I don't know, it depends how the ACC
- 5:25stacks up in terms of how they're projected with the the
- 5:27networkings and all that stuff. I don't know if it's going to be
- 5:30a proceed to the quick conference.
- 5:32So because of that Tech has to do well the non con.
- 5:34So I think it's a pretty big, I think it's a pretty big
- 5:36tournament. OK, so.
- 5:38Yeah, I I think it's a two and O situation too, for the same
- 5:41reason, Sheldon said. This is where you got to build
- 5:44your resume. This is the time to do it.
- 5:47You know I don't as as Sheldon said, I don't think the ACC is
- 5:49perceived as a good conference. It's going to depend on how in
- 5:53that kind of second tier they fall.
- 5:57So that that's really going to kind of determine the strength
- 6:00there. So getting all the wins you can
- 6:03in the non con is going to be very important.
- 6:05Let's go to and O let's let's take this into December on a on
- 6:09a high note here. Yeah, I'm.
- 6:12I'm with y'all. I think it has to be two and O
- 6:14if anything is to build the confidence to play again.
- 6:17Boise perceived as a good team, they lost by 17 to Clemson just
- 6:21the other night and Auburn is a good team.
- 6:24I think it's confidence because after those games they basically
- 6:28have following week, they open conference play with Louisville.
- 6:32So if you go in there, you go one O, 1 or O and two.
- 6:36I mean the confidence is going to be down.
- 6:38This team needs the confidence. Hey, because of what tally, I
- 6:41think what Y'all said, this is a shooting team.
- 6:44They're shooting. Team shooters need confidence.
- 6:47So let's see how that shakes out.
- 6:49It is Thursday night at 8:00, so I'll be watching the Niners
- 6:55here, the Hokies here. All right, Women's, they
- 6:57struggled a little bit with UNCG.
- 6:59They've got a couple of Kansas, then Tulane this weekend, Friday
- 7:03and Saturday. LSU looming next week.
- 7:07I don't. Y'all y'all tell me.
- 7:09Not until we get to the LSU game.
- 7:11Are you worried? Like, honestly, and I mean, are
- 7:14y'all worried about any of these teams coming up?
- 7:16I mean. No, I mean I wouldn't call them
- 7:19necessarily a warm up, but they're certainly not, not any
- 7:21teams that going to I think press this wall to wall so.
- 7:26LSU got some bullshit going on down there right now, too.
- 7:29So yeah, maybe, maybe we can, you know, sneak around and blow
- 7:34them out. Angel Reese not dressing out for
- 7:38a game or got benched or something, we got all kind of
- 7:41stuff going on early this season.
- 7:44Yeah, and that's not helping them gel with, you know, a
- 7:46couple new pieces that they brought in.
- 7:48So it'll be interesting to see if they, you know, able to put
- 7:51those pieces together between now and then.
- 7:53And you know, I I still like our chances regardless.
- 7:59They definitely play a more physical brand of basketball
- 8:02than we do. So it's going to be interesting
- 8:04to see if we can match that that that was a problem in the
- 8:07tournament last year. It was.
- 8:09So you know, if if we can either, you know, get a lead
- 8:12where that becomes less of a problem or you know, at least
- 8:16match some of that energy to kind of offset that a little
- 8:19bit, I think we'll be all right. Showing anything on this,
- 8:23that'll be fine, I think. I think Kansas will be a good
- 8:26test and I'll see when they when they get there, but kind of like
- 8:30what Ty was saying like non conference games especially for
- 8:32this team, just not the biggest deal in the world.
- 8:34Like they we know that they're going to be high seed.
- 8:37So it'd be it'd be nice to win obviously for the resume and you
- 8:40know maybe for for the social media right bragging rights as
- 8:43well. But.
- 8:45It's bragging rights. It's confidence too.
- 8:47And as much as that people, you know, we're we're down about the
- 8:49Iowa loss. You playing with one of the best
- 8:52teams in the country, you're right there.
- 8:53Go to LSU, get that win and just, you know, just keep the
- 8:57building, keep building. Yes, we have been waiting.
- 8:59I have to watch that since this Saturday.
- 9:02Hokey Nation, 54231. More piece, One more piece,
- 9:05hokey wise, and I got to turn to one other thing.
- 9:07College football wise. Wrestling.
- 9:09Big win Up at Piscataway. They take out the number 15
- 9:13Rutgers Scarlet Knights. That was a good win on Friday
- 9:17and over the weekend the Keystone Classic.
- 9:21Wrestling's crazy because there's another thing going on
- 9:23tonight up at Penn State. I was reading like where.
- 9:27Like some of the best in the country are competing.
- 9:29It's like an All Star thing. That shit's crazy.
- 9:32But Keystone Classic up in Penn. Kayla Penson won.
- 9:35Bryce Adonian won. Andy Smith won.
- 9:38Hunter Cackle won. They take 4 championships up
- 9:41there, which is pretty daggone good.
- 9:46And it's much like women's basketball, right?
- 9:49Kind of the way we view it, It's like we're going to be good.
- 9:53We're going to send people to the Nationals.
- 9:56We're going to compete for the ACC title.
- 10:00It's just I like to just see the accolades, right?
- 10:02Because when you see those guys winning the tournaments, having
- 10:05a good, having a good duel, it's like this is the confidence we
- 10:09need for some of those guys. Yeah.
- 10:12I think it's all about building up that confidence and kind of
- 10:14taking some of those that momentum into the conference
- 10:20time and seeing how you can build off of that.
- 10:25All right. Don't they have anything on the
- 10:26wrestling? Nothing.
- 10:28Shelton Alley? Nope.
- 10:29All right, one piece. I tell y'all.
- 10:31I keep up with hirings and firings.
- 10:33Dino Babers got fired the other day up at Syracuse.
- 10:37So now the run of the muck of how many people are interested
- 10:41in that job is going up and down.
- 10:44There's two more pieces, actually.
- 10:47I mean, I guess if you're a long 10 year at OC or DC and they
- 10:52offer you a job, you take it, all right?
- 10:56Right. I mean, who can?
- 10:58Who can win in Syracuse? It's a tough job.
- 11:02It's a tough job, you know, It's just a tough football job.
- 11:06So not talking shit about them. But you know, I don't know.
- 11:09I don't know who can win there. It's not the 90s anymore.
- 11:13It's not, it's not and it and it's crazy to think if you go
- 11:16back and look in the history books that from like the mid 80s
- 11:19to the early 2000s, they were a legitimate top 25 program year
- 11:24in, year out. You know, we had our wars with
- 11:28them. Everybody.
- 11:28Always. It was it 9797 game always hurts
- 11:33a little bit. All right, One more piece and
- 11:38everybody follows it. Saw it.
- 11:39I mean it. The tea leaves have been there
- 11:41for the last about six weeks, but Marcellus Barnes Junior
- 11:44Decommits over the weekend officially puts it out there.
- 11:50I think for I think for US, US 4 here, it's not a shock.
- 11:57Yeah, once. Once Georgia was starting to
- 11:59push hard, you kind of got a feeling that that was going to
- 12:03go the way it did. It's that's a hard one to win
- 12:08heads up you know especially for a player that you know has is
- 12:15kind of that lower, you know from a ranking standpoint that
- 12:19you know high 3, low 4 like getting that offer is pretty big
- 12:22for him so. You know best of luck to him you
- 12:28know looks like George is is the is the go there so sucks.
- 12:34But I think we're we're we're on to the next, so we'll see what
- 12:37what comes down the Pike here. What's even more important, or
- 12:41more interesting, is as soon as he decommits, his ranking shoots
- 12:46up. Shut up.
- 12:48I'm just saying. Shut up.
- 12:49Oh yeah. Ranking.
- 12:50Ranking goes up. Hold on, We need.
- 12:53To Oh yeah, drop to a composite 3 before he decommitted and then
- 12:57I think he's back to a composite 4 if I'm not mistaken.
- 13:01He is, he's, he's he's almost a 90 now.
- 13:04Yeah, I'm telling you. Where's Matei?
- 13:06Call Matei, everybody. I'm telling you man, hey, they
- 13:10have to pay for subscriptions one way or the other.
- 13:13When certain people start. When some people.
- 13:15When certain people start. Sneaking around, the rankings
- 13:19get a little bit different. We need this team to stay here.
- 13:22We need this team to stay here. We need this team to stay here.
- 13:25They know how it works, man. You.
- 13:26Conspiracy theory. You got a conspiracy?
- 13:29Theory and a conspiracy they keep showing us.
- 13:31I mean, they're making it easy. Make it.
- 13:36They make it super easy. He decommits from Virginia Tech
- 13:39as ranking goes up. What the fuck?
- 13:45If Georgia doesn't give an offer, he comes back as he going
- 13:47back to an 87.75. Expeditiously.
- 13:53We're talking about before he has to show you got anything on
- 13:56this, man? I know it's tough to give up
- 13:58recruiting with all you're doing.
- 14:01Yeah, I know. I just only thing I would say I
- 14:03saw someone on social media. This happens a lot.
- 14:05Say something like, well, why would he, You know, you go to
- 14:08Georgia when you could be like a star at VTi think that's kind of
- 14:11a worked way of looking at it. I mean, you figure you go to
- 14:13Georgia, you've got the best coaches on the planet, best
- 14:16facilities, the the most exposure, nil money NFL draft
- 14:20opportunities. I mean, it's kind of a no
- 14:22brainer. So I just think it's, it's just
- 14:25a losing battle. They've got the money, they've
- 14:26got the the winning, the success.
- 14:28Just not something I'd overreact to too much.
- 14:32All right. Well.
- 14:34This has not been a very happy and we don't get even unhappier
- 14:37here and we got to tell the truth Tuesday and you know you
- 14:41all know the way we do this we always going to start with what
- 14:44went well and I'll fire this one right out the the the boys
- 14:47didn't quit the whole game. No, down, down 21 and fight all
- 14:54the way. What else Y'all got Anything
- 14:58else y'all noticed before we jump on the offensive, defensive
- 15:01sides of the ball? Just kind of in general about
- 15:04this game. Excuse me?
- 15:08Drone can throw the ball, I mean.
- 15:10Oh yeah. I don't know if he's developed
- 15:12into that, but he definitely can throw it.
- 15:16So I was told earlier in the season that he was, he was
- 15:20struggling, he was struggling throwing the, throwing the deep
- 15:25pass, so. I'm just saying he's progressed,
- 15:27if that's what the case is. Well for sure.
- 15:30I mean you take a look at what he did.
- 15:33I mean those home run pass plays like I mean he he he is.
- 15:37Every time you see him take those he puts them in the right
- 15:41spots. He he and knock on wood damn it
- 15:45he is not an under thrower on a deep shot.
- 15:49He's not. He puts it over their head and
- 15:52that's why you've seen so many drops in the he put it right
- 15:54here. And putting you up here, he
- 15:57drops the dime or it's going to be slightly out of reach.
- 16:00That's the one good thing, Brian.
- 16:02Anything else that impressed you with the offense or anything
- 16:05like that on Saturday? I mean, I'd say his patience it
- 16:10more than anything, waiting for those routes to develop and come
- 16:12open and trusting the pass pro was going to give him enough
- 16:17time against that pass rush. You know, there were a lot of
- 16:21times where you know. Things had to develop on the
- 16:25back end for some of those big plays to happen.
- 16:27So you had some patience there, was able to deliver accurate
- 16:31balls consistently and we were able to move the move the rock
- 16:35once we kind of got into that catch up mode unfortunately,
- 16:38which is kind of, you know, not not the game plan we had out the
- 16:42gate obviously. Yeah, and we're going to get.
- 16:45Into the game plan Out of the gate.
- 16:48Can I say another thing? XTB is behest.
- 16:53Yeah, he's very fast. I mean and and that was one of
- 16:58that was such a great pivot play at that point in time in the
- 17:01game because and I'm going to mention this in a little while
- 17:04here, but when we ran that play to the boundary side, I mean
- 17:09everybody from NC State flowed and when I think came back, they
- 17:13did not see that coming. They did not see that coming at
- 17:17all. Sean, anything on offense you
- 17:20can think of that went well in your eyes?
- 17:22Watching it, reading over data, Anything, I mean I think it was
- 17:29it was a hard game to analyze because the box score stats in
- 17:32my opinion and kind of softened up what, you know, we pass on
- 17:35the field obviously check couldn't get the run game going
- 17:39so they had to kind of play from behind.
- 17:40And once NC State got that three touchdown lead, they kind of
- 17:42went into a little bit of a shell turtled up so to speak.
- 17:44And that's when the the passings, you know, the passing
- 17:47kind of opened up. So I don't know if it was just
- 17:49them playing prevent. Obviously I like what I saw in
- 17:51the fourth quarter from from drones in the passing game.
- 17:54I liked how they had some big plays and they struck back when
- 17:57NCC scored touch ends. But I just don't know.
- 18:00It's hard because I don't know how NC State would have played
- 18:03differently if they had only had a one touchdown lead rather than
- 18:05a three touchdown. Lead.
- 18:06That's fair. That's fair.
- 18:08All righty. Now let's go to defensive side
- 18:10of the ball because I'm. I will be honest with y'all.
- 18:14Was the way I watched this game was very awkward followed on my
- 18:17phone the first half. Unfortunately, most of the third
- 18:21quarter I had to listen to NC State radio calls and Robert and
- 18:25I was calling a perfect game. Y'all.
- 18:27I heard that like 6 times. I had to turn radio off twice
- 18:31because I got sick to my stomach.
- 18:32Luckily, about the time I hit Chase City Bron, the exit there?
- 18:37Thank God I picked up Bill and Mike the rest of the drive home.
- 18:43But, and then I came home and I watched the game and on defense,
- 18:50I like every nothing was right. Like the the play calls were
- 18:53bad, they were out of position. They looked lost.
- 18:57Do y'all have anything defensively?
- 19:00Honestly. Delaney hit somebody hard.
- 19:06Yeah, yeah. I mean trying to trying to find
- 19:12something. I mean we right, we never really
- 19:15got into a groove defensively like they they had us on our
- 19:18heels most of the game and I mean you know in the
- 19:23second-half, I mean obviously they kind of went a little more
- 19:25conservative. That was the only time we looked
- 19:27like anything. But again that was more a
- 19:30product of their game plan than it was anything that we did
- 19:36significantly well. So that that was the most you
- 19:40know? That was disappointing.
- 19:42And I mean, I don't really think, I can't really think of
- 19:44anything that I saw that really stood out to me.
- 19:48That's like, yeah, that was good.
- 19:49I mean, D line play was all right.
- 19:55That's it. But it wasn't spectacular.
- 19:58And then what was happening on the back end, it needed to be
- 20:01spectacular. And it wasn't.
- 20:02All right, well, let's just jump to it.
- 20:04Let's go to what went bad. And I'm going to start with
- 20:06defense. And Sheldon, I don't know if you
- 20:08were able to pull this. But did were you able to find
- 20:11what Wolfpack's normal success rate is versus what it was
- 20:14Saturday? Yeah.
- 20:16So coming to the game, it was around 39%, which ranked 96.
- 20:21This game is about 46%. So plus 7% increase kind of
- 20:26pretty significant in the context of success rates, I
- 20:28think averages around like 40%, something like that.
- 20:31But there was also there's also a big discrepancy in terms of.
- 20:35Standard downs are passing downs, so obviously standard
- 20:37downs like your first and 10s where you could either run or
- 20:40pass the ball, NC State 54% there on passing downs, they're
- 20:44only about half as successful. So basically when whenever tech
- 20:49was not, whenever tech did not force NC State into an obvious
- 20:51passing situation, that's when they really struggled.
- 20:54And that's kind of what we what I know Brian and I mentioned in
- 20:57our preview was like, you've got to get them into passing downs
- 21:00and and then when they did, it worked, but they just couldn't
- 21:02do it enough. All right, Brian, what else,
- 21:05Charlie? What else?
- 21:05One of y'all speak up. What else did y'all see that
- 21:07went bad in your eyes, 'cause obviously we just had a moment
- 21:11of silence up there, 'cause not that much went good.
- 21:14I mean Concepcion cooked us a bunch of times, man.
- 21:18You know some of it was all those those passing downs, some
- 21:22of it was in the run game, some of it was just those quick
- 21:26screens. So, but he did a little bit of
- 21:28everything and and pretty much all of it hurt us at Different.
- 21:31Parts of the game. Yeah.
- 21:34He did whatever he wanted to do. I mean, he paid his, his he paid
- 21:39his $100 to the neighborhood hooker and he did whatever he
- 21:43wanted to do for the night. That's what happened.
- 21:47I'm just telling you Brian, that is at 2244 if you're.
- 21:54We we didn't get off. We didn't get off the field on
- 21:583rd downs at all like we needed to.
- 22:02I mean it's the same stuff when we play bad, it's the same
- 22:06things. It's like again, this team is so
- 22:10up and down. You look at the same stuff week
- 22:13in and week out, whether it's good or bad.
- 22:15When it's good it's good, but when it's bad it's bad.
- 22:18You know the run fits are horrible.
- 22:19We don't get off the field on 3rd downs when we need to.
- 22:22You know we. Penalties just whatever, man.
- 22:27It's just the same stuff and people get tired of seeing it.
- 22:29And I get it. I understand everybody watching
- 22:32everybody. If you're watching this later
- 22:34on, if you're at work, if you're at church, calm down a little
- 22:38bit. You know what I'm saying?
- 22:39I get it. You deserve to be mad.
- 22:41But you don't have a couple of days.
- 22:44Nobody's getting fired. So don't even get your blood
- 22:46pressure up because they ain't getting fired, you know?
- 22:49Do they need to be fired? Were we saying they need to be
- 22:51fired when we blowing people out?
- 22:54Like we got to take a whole body of work and look at what we
- 22:57need, what we were last year, what we are this year, what we
- 23:01need to be next year. It's a lot of stuff to think
- 23:03about, man. You start talking about firing
- 23:06people and just bringing new people in, then you fucking end
- 23:08up like Texas A&M paying a man $76,000,000 to be the same shit
- 23:14you've been. Use the same shit you've been.
- 23:18You just added some salt on top and the salt was him being mad
- 23:21at Nick Saban every week. So.
- 23:24I'm just saying, man, I ain't saying that, you know, the
- 23:26coaches don't need to be scrutinized.
- 23:27But I'm not going to go into the whole let's fire the whole
- 23:31coaching staff every week until we actually have something that
- 23:36is going to make us better. I mean, I'm the, I'm the type of
- 23:40person that you know when, when you're when you're looking at
- 23:44something. I need to see what you can do,
- 23:49what you can do for me, what you can show me before I will show
- 23:52you the door. Yeah.
- 23:53And I don't think we're quite at that point yet with with anybody
- 23:56on this tab obviously definitely not the head coach.
- 23:59But I think we're, I think we're still waiting to see where the
- 24:04where the ceiling could potentially be and and and this
- 24:06is year 2 of what you know was going to be a multiple year
- 24:09rebuild. We're we're talking about a team
- 24:12that has shown improvement. But what what they're struggling
- 24:17with is consistency. That's the truth.
- 24:20And The thing is it happened. And I'm going to, I'm going to
- 24:22bring us back to where we were because I'm agreeing with both
- 24:24of y'all on what y'all are saying.
- 24:26But what? What's frustrating Saturday in
- 24:30the most frustrating A. This is a male offense.
- 24:32This was not that good of an offense.
- 24:34Sheldon had the numbers where they ranked in the country.
- 24:36Not a good successful offense, a male offense.
- 24:39There are two guys that could beat you.
- 24:41We already mentioned conception. He beat us.
- 24:43He torched our asses. The other guy was Brendan
- 24:45Armstrong, and Brendan Armstrong had his fucking day.
- 24:49He ran for, if you an account of those knees at the end.
- 24:51He went for well over 100 rushing a ball.
- 24:54A lot of was designs and I think what got me a little bit and I'm
- 24:59going, I'm going to pitch it to Shell here in a second, was the
- 25:03first couple drives. We kind of pegged them.
- 25:05We kind of had what their number and then they adjusted and we
- 25:09didn't and they scored on five. And I had to hear that from NC
- 25:13State as well. When I was on the damn radio,
- 25:16five drives in a row, they scored a touchdown.
- 25:19And it's just like that's. Just can't give.
- 25:23Yeah you can't give that up and don't answer.
- 25:25You know you get your defense to go out and you know, I know I
- 25:28seen a lot of people saying fire Mars, you know maybe one day you
- 25:33deserve to be fired. But against Syracuse?
- 25:36I'm just saying like what it what you, you, you, you in a 00
- 25:41game going into the second, second quarter you know.
- 25:45Your offense has to produce, man.
- 25:47You're at home. You got to bring some, you got
- 25:49to bring some juice. You got to adjust.
- 25:51So I ain't saying that the the defense had a good day.
- 25:55I'm just saying it's a it's a collective effort to suck.
- 25:59And that's what we did. Let me ask Sheldon, can I pitch
- 26:02to Sheldon real quick? Because Sheldon looked up.
- 26:04The one thing I was more concerned about every time you
- 26:06said the defensive line didn't have a had an OK game in your
- 26:09eyes Brown when you looked at the tape?
- 26:11I asked Sheldon look up yards before contact.
- 26:14What was that Shelton? Did you get to it about how much
- 26:17it was pre contact? Before contact, yeah, it was
- 26:21probably about say 55 yards. So think about that 55 yards.
- 26:27They ran about 40 run plays. It was a yard and a half before
- 26:34we were touching them. On average a yard and a half.
- 26:38Y'all two boys played up on that front.
- 26:41If you're getting a yard and a half push, how's your running
- 26:44game going to do that day? Pretty good.
- 26:50I mean you, if you can get 3 yards to carry, you.
- 26:53All right. You know what I'm saying?
- 26:55So we're saying right there with that stat that he pulled up that
- 26:58before they got touched a yard and a half.
- 27:00And when I started looking more and more, our drops were crazy
- 27:03back for some of the linebackers like way off the line.
- 27:06And I didn't understand it. I didn't understand it because
- 27:10Ryan, you joked last weekend, it's the God honest truth.
- 27:13Brendan Armstrong doesn't have the ball, the arm to push the
- 27:16ball down there. He doesn't.
- 27:18He never has. So by the way, we had our
- 27:22defense and this is where I'm frustrated with Marv.
- 27:24It's like the only way he could beat you is give him soft zones
- 27:28and give him some sort of run lanes.
- 27:31The two things you couldn't do, we laid on the platform.
- 27:34And that's what makes me mad because I see it here as a
- 27:37common football fan. I've talked to y'all I, Sheldon,
- 27:40about data and I say you telling me this, play press, stack the
- 27:45box a little bit, make them go over the top on you, force that
- 27:49they can get off the press. And we didn't do that.
- 27:51And we have three really good quarterbacks, and I know we've
- 27:56got to have some at safety right now, but we have three really
- 27:59good quarterbacks. And that's what pisses me off.
- 28:02And it's like, what's going to happen if someone leaves?
- 28:06What's going to happen if the next guy doesn't develop quite
- 28:09well? Then it's going to be on Chris
- 28:12Mark. Right.
- 28:16Anything else on defense? I'm sorry.
- 28:18I got him a bad guy for a second.
- 28:20I mean the the last thing I'm going to say is that, you know,
- 28:22we said trick plays were coming, they came, they worked.
- 28:25It kind of sucked that, you know, you weren't able to do
- 28:27anything with it. Every single trick play they ran
- 28:30worked. It's bad, man.
- 28:35And again but but that's where it's like I don't believe in
- 28:38firing, you know, Chris Moore, Tyler Bowen.
- 28:41Nobody's getting fired this year because there's been at times
- 28:44where again you've seen all right looks like they know what
- 28:46the hell they're doing good calls and some people say, well
- 28:49that's against lesser competition.
- 28:51Tyler, I go back to what you said earlier this year.
- 28:55You talking about when lose by a lot, lose by a little, win by a
- 28:59little. Start winning by more.
- 29:02The scenario this year is lose you the best three teams in the
- 29:05conference, Beat up on the bottom of the conference and not
- 29:08and not win by three points. Win by 4 points.
- 29:11Beat up the bottom of the conference.
- 29:14Right, so. Yeah.
- 29:17Yeah, I mean the weird thing is that the with the ACC, there's
- 29:20there really hasn't been a measuring stick.
- 29:23It's either been, you know, not not playing UNC and not playing
- 29:28a couple other teams like that. Georgia Tech, you know, Miami.
- 29:31Miami, There hasn't been a lot of middle tier teams on our
- 29:35schedule. It's either been bottom 5 or top
- 29:39three, so and we're getting another bottom 5 this week, so.
- 29:45It. It's it's been really hard to
- 29:47get a barometer of where exactly this team is.
- 29:49We know we're not a bad team but we don't know how decent of a
- 29:53team we are. Shelton Anything else on the
- 29:56defence before we wrap this up? Yeah, so I I was having a
- 30:00conversation with one of my coaching buddies who who knows
- 30:03about scheme and I trust his opinion.
- 30:05And I think basically what he laid out to me was when you look
- 30:08at the linebacker play for Virginia Tech, you see the same
- 30:12issues with regards to force and spill and lever over and over
- 30:16and over again from the same players.
- 30:18And so I think it's reasonable to question if this is a
- 30:20coaching problem, given that it keeps happening over and over
- 30:23again. But what he also said was, and I
- 30:26agree with this, I I think that that whole lineback room needs a
- 30:29makeover. I just, I don't think those guys
- 30:31have the instincts with we're playing a bunch of converted
- 30:33safeties now. If we get some studs coming in
- 30:36next year and we still have the same problems, then it's
- 30:38definitely a coaching issue. But I just, I would like to see
- 30:42a a a Marv coach team that has guys with with instincts and a
- 30:46good feel for that position. Yeah, 'cause when you look at,
- 30:50you look at the conference man. And no disrespect to our guys,
- 30:53but. I think they're working hard,
- 30:55but like Sheldon said, I mean, we got a lot of converted
- 30:59safeties in the linebackers, you know what I mean?
- 31:01And. You.
- 31:02Look at when you when you look at a linebacker, Virginia has a
- 31:08true freshman linebacker. Cam Robinson is a linebacker.
- 31:14Peyton Wilson is a linebacker. You know what I'm saying?
- 31:17Like, it is much different to have somebody like that playing
- 31:20linebacker than even to have Kelly Lawson.
- 31:24And I think, you know, I think Kelly Lawson's a good player,
- 31:27but as good as he may be for us, there's still a drop off from a
- 31:33top linebacker. We just don't have that play
- 31:35yet. Allen Tinsdale.
- 31:37Hey man, time to be a family, man.
- 31:41Join us. Come on, the podcast put you
- 31:43some headphones on. You don't got to go out there
- 31:46and get beat up no more. It's over.
- 31:49You know, Come on up in here and I think what y'all, it's what's
- 31:52being reflected here before we move over to the offensive side
- 31:54of the ball is that linebacker position.
- 31:56It's instincts. Most guys who play that position
- 31:59don't move. You are a linebacker mostly all
- 32:02of your life. That's it.
- 32:05Because what it takes to be that it is a certain skill set.
- 32:08What what what Tally saying is can we just get him Andrew
- 32:11Tapapuaca at middle linebacker and name name a will.
- 32:16You don't have to name the best will we've had, but name a solid
- 32:19will and he do good. So yeah, by the way, the only
- 32:23player we, we see having good games on the lineman core is
- 32:27Jenkins. And why?
- 32:29Why you want to? In my opinion, because the star
- 32:31is a true hybrid safety. Linebacker Keonta was a safety.
- 32:35It's more of his wheelhouse. All right, let's go to the
- 32:38offensive side of the ball. Anybody that wants to answer
- 32:43this question? Why did it take so long for us
- 32:48to open passing game downfield? Why?
- 32:54Because it worked. 20 Go ahead bro.
- 32:59I was just going to say, I feel like, you know, we we talk about
- 33:01this a lot on here that we're a little late with the pivots in
- 33:09scrapping the game plan, moving away from the script, all that
- 33:13stuff. After your first two drives of
- 33:16not having success, you need to mix it up.
- 33:18You need to do something different.
- 33:19You need to go to something different.
- 33:21You don't wait till you're down 14 before you start, you know,
- 33:26dialing stuff up because that that's what happened.
- 33:29Yes, we went down there, we got a big play to XTB on that
- 33:34reverse after the big kickoff return, got it back to a
- 33:37touchdown. But then we didn't see the ball
- 33:39for like the next 10 minutes because they had a long drive.
- 33:43Scored before half came out, scored again to open the half on
- 33:46like a 7 minute drive. So I mean it, it was, it was a
- 33:51long time before we saw the ball again and we were down 21 by the
- 33:53time we did what you got. Tally, hey, similar to what we
- 33:58talked about. You know, in some of the other
- 34:00games it's like the coaching staff looks at the team and they
- 34:03go, yeah, it's going to be a rough one for us.
- 34:05Let's see what happens and you know, we'll go from there, you
- 34:09know, pick our spots and things. Like when you play on a team and
- 34:12you're not. I know we were favorites, but
- 34:17North Carolina State was the better team to me, I mean.
- 34:20We essentially had the home hook.
- 34:22I mean, it was a. It was a pickle.
- 34:23Yeah, it was a. Pickle, to me it's like when you
- 34:27look at stuff like that, you got to come out swinging, man.
- 34:30You know what I'm saying? You got to take some shots.
- 34:32You got to hope some good stuff happens.
- 34:34You got to send some people, got to blitz some people and and and
- 34:36if they beat you, they beat you. You lose it anyway.
- 34:39You know when you're playing the top team.
- 34:41So I just think, Curtis said before we got on, when you get
- 34:46young coordinators, they're like super conservative or they're
- 34:50super like risky. You got to be a good mix of both
- 34:56and figure out what team you have to figure out what works
- 34:58for you. But both of our coordinators are
- 35:01like super conservative. It's like that stick is so far
- 35:05in their ass. You can open their mouth and and
- 35:10and thump it, you know what I'm saying?
- 35:12I don't know man. You got to, you got to do some
- 35:14stuff different. But again depending on who we
- 35:17play to, we play. They call the, they call the
- 35:19games different. So it's true.
- 35:21But you've also and that's where I like what y'all are saying
- 35:24here. Because you've seen those games
- 35:26where we didn't divert from the plan and the next thing you know
- 35:31the next drive 4 plays touchdown, right?
- 35:36And then the drive after that we drive deep, get a field goal,
- 35:39then the next one we get on plus side we punt and put them inside
- 35:42of 10. It feels like to me it's like
- 35:45they have this whole of I know it's eventually going to work.
- 35:49I know it's eventually going to work until coach probably goes
- 35:51beat. This shit ain't working.
- 35:53Do something different OK click. The other part I want to say is,
- 35:58and y'all, maybe it's my eyes deceiving me and and y'all can
- 36:02disagree. I felt like NC State had some of
- 36:05our plays absolutely pegged, pegged.
- 36:11The XTB play that was like a what was it?
- 36:13A toss toss. It was like a toss left right
- 36:18and they reversed it. Watch how they float like, oh,
- 36:21we know exactly what they're doing and when you pivoted.
- 36:24Nobody was. I mean, they're a well coached
- 36:26defense. I mean, you expect that from a
- 36:28well coached defense. And that's exactly what they
- 36:29got. I mean.
- 36:32You know you look at what Wilson was doing.
- 36:33I mean he was all over the damn place.
- 36:35I mean he was even on that play that you were talking about.
- 36:38He was, he was, he was almost walking down.
- 36:40XTBI mean he was the second fastest player on the field on
- 36:43that play. So I mean it it's it's
- 36:47frustrating because you feel like when this team does have
- 36:51some early, early success, the coordinator has shown that he's
- 36:55he's he'll let his nuts hang a little bit, but when it doesn't
- 36:59work out the gate. It takes a little bit too long
- 37:02to move on to something different.
- 37:05I mean, you don't have to wholesale abandoned your game
- 37:08plan to throw in a handful of new wrinkles to give them
- 37:12something different to look at and something different to worry
- 37:14about. And I'll, I'll go ahead and
- 37:16mention it here since it's on the screen there.
- 37:18Rex Parker said two to three touches were two.
- 37:20Big mistake. Again, I know some of that was
- 37:23dictated by the game plan, but you still got to get, you know,
- 37:25one of your three or four best players on the field involved in
- 37:28the offensive game. Plan.
- 37:30You got to get him the ball. You know, if it's nothing, but
- 37:33just for him to have some confidence for the next game,
- 37:36you got to get him the ball. You got to attempt to get
- 37:39involved, Sheldon. Let me ask this though, because
- 37:41it wasn't a huge sample size, but how bad were the run grades
- 37:44for the offensive line? Yeah, So we can go through them.
- 37:48Obviously we didn't run much like you, said Parker.
- 37:50Clements was the best, actually, surprisingly enough at 68 and
- 37:53then around average you got Berlin Morgue around 63.
- 37:56Xavier Chaplin's 60, so those are those are the passing grades
- 38:00and then below that Brody Meadows was not great at 50.5
- 38:04and then last was Kayden Moore at about 50.
- 38:07So kind of some some up and down there.
- 38:10I thought it was going to be a lot worse, but maybe that small
- 38:13sample size saved them. But we again, it's the up and
- 38:19downs and I had someone reach out to me and got to make a
- 38:22change and I was like and I made the point.
- 38:26On the offensive line you have 3 freshmen getting massive play
- 38:31time, right? Massive.
- 38:35You have a guy switching positions and we've I know we've
- 38:38mentioned this before y'all y'all y'all heard this from us
- 38:40before and there are two guys that at best should be your
- 38:45depth pieces not frontline starters.
- 38:48That's just the truth. And and and now that they are
- 38:53much older, it's like if if we do not, I will be disappointed
- 38:58in this staff. If we do not go out and get at
- 39:01least one, I'd prefer two offensive lineman in the portal
- 39:05once it opens up in this. Yeah, you need to, but I get
- 39:08what you're saying. You need to.
- 39:10We need to all right. Excuse me.
- 39:14Don't die, man. Don't die.
- 39:15I don't air. I don't know what happened.
- 39:20All right, so anything happened Saturday, Y'all were not
- 39:23prepared for. I'll kick it over to Segla
- 39:25first. I'd say I just our general
- 39:30inability to stop that offense consistently, I thought we would
- 39:32have no problem, especially in the passing game kind of slowing
- 39:37them down a little bit and they kind of did whatever they want
- 39:40to most of the game until they got into that.
- 39:43Protect the lead type offense there in the late 3rd, early
- 39:47fourth quarter. All right, Tyler, what about
- 39:50you? Brendan Armstrong turned into
- 39:52Cam Newton, what we had him looking like, just letting him
- 39:56fall forward, do what he want, do backflips, put his hand in
- 40:00his ass, throwing it down. He just did whatever he want to
- 40:02do. Our defense.
- 40:04Nobody hit nobody. Nobody.
- 40:05I mean, it's just a bad showing, you know, We just, I guess to
- 40:10sit. To sum it up, we didn't quit,
- 40:13which is good. Well, we talked about it in the
- 40:16beginning, but. I don't feel like we had fight,
- 40:19you know. I don't feel like we had the
- 40:21fight that we normally have. It's like we were defeated.
- 40:26As soon as they punched us in the mouth, you know, Peyton
- 40:29Wilson was talking shit, you know, But you didn't have too
- 40:32many people saying nothing back, you know, It's just, oh, shit,
- 40:34he good. We can't fuck with him.
- 40:36Oh, you got to hit that motherfucker, just like you hit
- 40:39everybody else. But we didn't see that.
- 40:42We didn't see that Saturday, so we'll see.
- 40:45Sheldon, what about you? Yeah, I was most surprised,
- 40:49disappointed with how poorly they stopped Brendan Armstrong
- 40:52running the football. I know he's a good runner.
- 40:54I don't mean to take anything away from him, but his running
- 40:56numbers are down for the previous years and I thought
- 40:59that Tech did a fantastic job defending the run against Scared
- 41:02Trade or against Syracuse and also Cassillon's with BC.
- 41:05So it was definitely a surprise that that they struggled so much
- 41:08when they when they had success against other quarterbacks.
- 41:11Find what you got. You got something on top of the
- 41:13tally there? Yeah, I was just, I was
- 41:15frustrated in general with, you know, we said it at the at the
- 41:18Open, like that was the closest blowout I've ever seen.
- 41:22It was. And it was frustrating because
- 41:25like Tally said, we got punched in the mouth early and it took
- 41:28us way too long to take that shit seriously.
- 41:35And I felt like it was really the fourth quarter.
- 41:37There was some fight in the fourth quarter where I felt like
- 41:39we really started punching back a little bit.
- 41:43Right. But it just took too long to get
- 41:45to that point and. I'm going to go hold on.
- 41:47I'm going to go with Andretti. Nailed it here.
- 41:50Because that is coaching. Yeah, to get you guys up to do
- 41:53it. I will say that it's coaching to
- 41:55get you guys up to do it. But I also will say coming from
- 41:59a player who's played and then watching my son, you can coach
- 42:03a, you can coach a kid as much as you want.
- 42:06You can get them hyped during the when they get in the game
- 42:10and somebody hits them and they stand over them and they don't
- 42:14get up and push them off or their teammates don't come over
- 42:17and help them get up. That's on the, that's on the
- 42:20players. Now the coach might go back and
- 42:22evaluate for him and be like, hey, when your when your
- 42:24quarterback's down the line you got to go pick him up.
- 42:27You know, that should already be instilled in you.
- 42:29But it's like some games we just we get, we don't, we get in some
- 42:33kind of mold and we don't think about that stuff.
- 42:35You know what I'm saying? It's like, you know, somebody
- 42:38hits you and they they they flex over you.
- 42:40Nobody comes up to to to help the guy up or push the guy off
- 42:45or you know what I'm saying? Yeah, I don't think we have
- 42:49enough dogs in the in the trenches on offense.
- 42:51You got to have some heart. You got to have some heart
- 42:54yourself, so. 100% hundred percent.
- 42:56But I do agree, Andrea, it is coaching it.
- 42:58Is coaching on that the one thing I'm going to say?
- 43:00I was not prepared for. I was not prepared for this
- 43:03game, getting over 60 combined points.
- 43:06If you tell me we lost a game and it was 20 to 27 or 2128 or
- 43:12something lower, this game getting to 63 points just blew
- 43:17my mind because the way both defenses have played coming into
- 43:22it and then how both offensive run offenses are ran.
- 43:26All right, y'all, it's only one week left, So what can we do
- 43:31better? Beat the shit out of UVA.
- 43:37That's it. That's all you got to do?
- 43:39You got You got one more game in front of you for a chance to
- 43:43play a bowl game against your rival at Lane Stadium.
- 43:49N there is no damn excuse to drop this one.
- 43:53This is not a good football team.
- 43:55We're about to talk about them after we get up and get back
- 43:57from the break here. Go handle your business.
- 44:02Yeah, it's Rivalry week. Did I say that right?
- 44:06You got it. You said it.
- 44:07Robbery week. Yeah, it's robbery week.
- 44:09You got to go play, man. You got to throw.
- 44:12You throw out the records, You throw out the stats.
- 44:15You throw out what everybody's done the rest of the year and
- 44:18you just got to go play. I mean, that's what you can do
- 44:20better this week. Whatever ritual you got to have.
- 44:23Wake them up at 5:00, throw water on them.
- 44:27Tar and feather. I don't know what you need to do
- 44:30to get hyped, but I do know they've already made some
- 44:34comments about how they going to beat you when they beat you.
- 44:37They're going to be back on the national stage to beat a fucking
- 44:415 and 16 whatever. But anyway, you got to go and
- 44:46you got to win. That's what you got to do.
- 44:48Because you really do need that bowl game and you do need those
- 44:51extra practices and you need to you need to be able to recruit
- 44:55and tell people that hey, we're missing one piece, we're missing
- 44:582 pieces. We bring you in.
- 45:01We go from a bowl team to hell. You could be a playoff team.
- 45:06I ain't saying we're a playoff team, but look at Louisville
- 45:09next year. Maybe the playoff team.
- 45:12Yeah, 12 teams. Sheldon, you got anything?
- 45:16No, look, just win is a win, man.
- 45:18I mean, I don't I expected to be a dogfight this Saturday and if
- 45:22they come out on top, that's all I care about.
- 45:24So just go into go into the offseason with some momentum,
- 45:28some good mojo and. And and you'll we'll feel a lot
- 45:31better about about this, this whole pride thing we get AW,
- 45:34this Saturday. You're absolutely right.
- 45:36To me it's when it is all that matters and with saying that we
- 45:40are going to take a quick pause from our digital partners and
- 45:43Main Street Pharmacy. I can probably save you a lot of
- 45:46money and I can take a lot better care of you.
- 45:49That's pretty much it. My name is Jeremy Counts and I'm
- 45:52a pharmacist. I own and operate Main Street
- 45:54Pharmacy here in downtown Blacksburg.
- 45:56My brother's a pharmacist. I'm a pharmacist.
- 45:57My uncle's a pharmacist. My dad's a pharmacist.
- 45:59I remember he would give me M and Ms. to count in little pill
- 46:02counters. This is something I've always
- 46:04done, and I'm just lucky that what I know so well is something
- 46:08that I can do and feel good about it and get back to people.
- 46:11Pharmacies are your frontline defense.
- 46:13Pharmacy's job is to make sure you're getting optimal care for
- 46:16the lowest price possible. Also, we take the pressure off
- 46:20of emergency rooms. I'll tell people immediately
- 46:22when they need to go to the doctor, or I'll tell them if
- 46:24they just need a cream over the counter.
- 46:26If there's something that isn't commercially available, if it's
- 46:28something that's not available in a certain strength or a
- 46:31certain form or anything like that, we'll make it tailor made
- 46:34medications. Some of those options save
- 46:35people a lot of money. What motivates me?
- 46:37I get to take care of people and limit Blacksburg.
- 46:40That's all neat. As we take a quick break, we'd
- 46:44like to tell you about getting your free website report from
- 46:47our digital partner, Grassroots Digital Marketing Student.
- 46:50They'll tell you how your website ranks on Google, on
- 46:52site, SEO and social media. No commitment to buy anything.
- 46:56You can get your free report by visiting grassroots
- 46:59digitalstudio.com/free Dash website Dash Report.
- 47:04Now back to the episode. All right and we are back.
- 47:07And now let's get to go. It's a little hate week.
- 47:10Know the enemy as we take a look at the UVA Cavaliers.
- 47:15And we are going to flip to the offensive side of the football.
- 47:19As always, Brian, I give you the honor who we got running this
- 47:23show and what do they do? Yeah, we got Dez Kitchings
- 47:27running the show here. It's a pro, pro spread scheme, a
- 47:31lot of wide zone rushing concepts, likes the deep ball a
- 47:36lot. You'll see play action very
- 47:38frequently as well, and they score most of their points in
- 47:41the first quarter actually when you look at.
- 47:44This team, they've done very well kind of out the gate their
- 47:47first one or two drives and then slowed down a whole bunch after
- 47:52that. So that's something to watch
- 47:55for. Obviously with with some of the
- 47:56up and down starts we've had either slow starts or quick
- 48:00starts and not really a whole lot of steady Eddie, so that'll
- 48:03be something to pay attention to.
- 48:05All righty. Sheldon, you got anything on
- 48:09Anything? This offense does good.
- 48:12I mean. Yeah, they've got really good
- 48:14wide receivers. I'll see.
- 48:17We'll talk about, you know, Malik Washington and knockout
- 48:20fields very shortly. But I think it's an offense
- 48:23overall that's struggled for the majority of the season.
- 48:26So that's why some of the metrics are so bad.
- 48:28But you do have to sort of use the eye test and look what
- 48:30they've been doing in previous weeks.
- 48:32And look at Duke last week, they averaged about 6.3 yards for
- 48:35play, which was pretty impressive, put up 30 points.
- 48:38So it's. It's a team that has misleading
- 48:41stats. I think they have gotten
- 48:42significantly better over the past couple weeks.
- 48:45All right, some misleading stats.
- 48:47And you already mentioned the first guy we're going to talk
- 48:48about here today, and that is Malik Washington, A beast, 5
- 48:56foot nine, about 190 lbs. He was a transfer guy from
- 49:00Northwestern after everything that went up there when he
- 49:03originally came out of high school, Parkview High School,
- 49:06Lilburn, GA, Class of 2019. He was ranked in an 86.
- 49:10And now at his time, while he was up at Northwestern, he did
- 49:13have two solid production seasons there, both 20, excuse
- 49:18me, both 2021 and 2022 combined for 109 receptions with a little
- 49:25over 1200 yards there. But this season he is absolutely
- 49:29blown up. 96 receptions, 13111 yards, 9 touchdowns.
- 49:35Brian What does he bring to the table?
- 49:38Yeah, he's kind of an all around slot guy.
- 49:40He's a deep threat and a yak threat.
- 49:42They like to use him a lot of the screen game, quick pass
- 49:45game, but also they'll throw the ball deep to him.
- 49:48Very elusive in the open field. Definitely their biggest
- 49:51offensive threat by a mile. All right, and Shelton, let's
- 49:55get a little bit of grades on Malik Washington's because I
- 49:58believe, if I'm not mistaken, he is a balletical semifinalist.
- 50:03Yep, he is really, really good. So.
- 50:05Highest graded wide receiver in the ACC at 91.2, which is
- 50:08insane. He has the highest reception
- 50:11percentage, so that's percentage of targets.
- 50:13He catches the highest yards per route run, most yards after
- 50:16catch, most first downs, all ACC, and he does not have a
- 50:20single drop the entire season. So that's his, that's his body
- 50:23of work. He is a he is a exceptional
- 50:25whiteout. Tally, what does he catch your
- 50:28eye with 'cause you? Said Beast as soon as I dropped
- 50:29his name. Just good, man.
- 50:31He's tough. He's not very big, but he's just
- 50:35he looks like a running back. You know like he's he's he's got
- 50:38a little bit of weight to him. When he gets the ball like you
- 50:41said, y'all stop to catch like he makes people miss.
- 50:44He's tough. He continues to run.
- 50:46He's not going down with one hit.
- 50:48So those D BS got the, I mean we've talked about is our
- 50:54secondary good or you know, our secondary stats may be
- 50:58misleading or not. You know, there's been of
- 51:01arguments about that. So they'll have their chance to
- 51:03see, because whoever's lined up against him, that motherfucker's
- 51:07coming for. You hell, we've argued about it
- 51:09on here man. And like, you know, like you
- 51:13said, I mean he, he finishes runs.
- 51:15He kind of reminds me of like unfortunately kind of a little
- 51:18bit of you know conception last week except you know he's deep
- 51:23into his college career at this point.
- 51:25So he's a, he's a developed player whereas Concepcion still
- 51:27a freshman and. Kind of get his his legs under
- 51:30him here a little bit. By the way, y'all know his You
- 51:33don't have any times he's been held under 100 this year,
- 51:37probably 1. Twice.
- 51:40One was 97, the other was the opening game against Tennessee,
- 51:43and he only had 29 yards. So definitely a beast there.
- 51:47And as is the other opposite of him.
- 51:51And that's, excuse me, that's Malachi Fields. 6 foot four, 220
- 51:58lbs. Came out of Monticello High
- 52:02School in Charlottesville. Stay at home, baby. 8
- 52:06Legitimately, I mean it might be 6 miles between the high school
- 52:11and where UVA is. He was a deposit 82 coming out
- 52:17just 48th in the state of Virginia.
- 52:19So obviously he has developed pretty well and so far the
- 52:22season he does not quite have the stats.
- 52:26That his buddy has but 52 catches, 722 yards, 3 touchdown
- 52:33run. Let's call the only six boys
- 52:36220. I think his game's a little bit
- 52:37different than Mr. Washington. Yeah, I mean he's a little bit
- 52:42more one-dimensional than than. Malik is primarily a deep
- 52:47threat. Most of those routes are ran
- 52:49past the 15 yards, but he he will also.
- 52:52They'll hit him on some of the short stuff, like the the quick
- 52:55hitters. They'll also go with like, you
- 52:57know, the hooks and curls to kind of move the sticks with
- 53:00him. So he's kind of a guy that is
- 53:01going to catch the short stuff and kind of do The Dirty work
- 53:03outside or they're going to send him deep.
- 53:08All right, now Sheldon, there's no possible way he can grade as
- 53:11good as Washington, but I've got a feeling just looking at his
- 53:14data points and look at some of the statistics, he doesn't
- 53:17probably grade too shabby. No, it's pretty solid. 15th
- 53:21highest created ACC wideout yards per catch pretty OK at
- 53:25Brown 13.9 He's not a big yards after catch guy and he's also
- 53:30not as sure handed as as Washington is only about a 58%
- 53:34catch rate and also lower lower passing red and went targeted.
- 53:37But the main reason for that, if you want context, is that he has
- 53:41a very high depth of targets, so about 14.6 yards is how deep
- 53:45he's targeted. So obviously more, more deep
- 53:48balls, obviously harder to catch.
- 53:50So that kind of explains the contacts of the members, but
- 53:52still a very a very good pass catcher.
- 53:56Hey, Tally, two things. Anything on this guy?
- 53:58And then I just sent you a message.
- 54:00Quick, a quick look at it on our screen here.
- 54:02But you got anything on this guy?
- 54:04Did you get to watch him or see any highlights from him like you
- 54:06did Malik? Yeah, he's just, he's just a big
- 54:11wide receiver man. He's a you kind of a match up
- 54:13nightmare when you start looking at his size like you said he can
- 54:17move the change for you. Good downfield receiver, he's
- 54:22he's shown it by the yards that he has, but once again comes
- 54:27down to our defense. You know, they played some good
- 54:28defenses, they played some good players, but you know, we'll see
- 54:32what our, what our secondary can do.
- 54:35Yeah, we'll see how the secondary can do and we're going
- 54:37to talk about a few more offensive players than we
- 54:39normally do this week. Y'all because the next guy I
- 54:42want to talk about is I do want to talk about the quarterback
- 54:44and that is Anthony Calandre, A6 foot, 200 LB quarterback out of
- 54:53Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg, FL.
- 54:55A consensus 84 when he came out back in the class of 2023.
- 55:00So he is a true freshman. He has played a lot, the red
- 55:03shirts already gone from him. Not a lot of crazy offers.
- 55:06Middle Tennessee. Buffalo.
- 55:08So not a highly touted guy coming back.
- 55:11Probably his next best offer was probably Kentucky, but we don't
- 55:15know how committable offers are. So far this season he's played
- 55:18in seven games, and in those seven games we have 17115 yards
- 55:27at about 62% completion percentage, 11 touchdowns, 8
- 55:31interceptions. Also two fumbles lost.
- 55:34LeBron, What's he showing on the tape there?
- 55:39Yeah, he's kind of a past first dual threat guy.
- 55:41He's got enough wiggle to be dangerous, but he's not like
- 55:44elite in that category. Great accuracy on deep balls,
- 55:48that's what he likes to throw the most.
- 55:51Really good at maneuvering in the pocket to buy time.
- 55:54Just average to mid, you know, when it comes to reading in the
- 55:58intermediate area of the defense, especially over the
- 56:01middle. Generally looking to drive the
- 56:03ball down field or check it down.
- 56:05He's not hitting a lot of those intermediate targets
- 56:07consistently and he will throw some picks as you alluded to
- 56:11there with the with the 11 to 8 ratio he'll he'll let the ball
- 56:15go to the defense. So, so that's an opportunity we
- 56:17have to get some turnovers and get some points on the board.
- 56:21All righty. Tally.
- 56:24Were you able to find it? Yeah.
- 56:25So, as reported by Mike Barber, UV as quarterback says quote
- 56:32after the game versus Tech. After we beat Virginia Tech,
- 56:36this program is going to shoot up and everybody in the country
- 56:40is going to know about us, UN quote.
- 56:43Any comment on that, Mister Talley?
- 56:44For a team that's three and eight, hey man, he trying to he
- 56:50trying to let his nuts hang, you know, he got, he got his rival
- 56:54coming to his house. He's feeling good coming off of
- 56:57his third win of the season. I'll probably be talking some
- 57:00shit too you know but you got to be hey, TI said it best don't
- 57:06let your mouth write a check your ass can't cash.
- 57:09So we going to see we going to see what this defense going to
- 57:12do. The last thing I would do as a
- 57:15as a three win team is try to add fuel to you know the other
- 57:20team fire but. He's LED this nut thing, but
- 57:23he's LED this nut thing that, you know, if if they beat A5,
- 57:26win Virginia Tech, they're all of a sudden the national.
- 57:29A A-Team to watch on a national stage that that's kind of a
- 57:33that's an odd flex, but you know a freshman flex a.
- 57:38Freshman flex day, yeah. You know what I got?
- 57:41I got in trouble with one of those against Bridgewater too.
- 57:43So back in the day. So I'm not going to let.
- 57:45I'm not going to get it get down on him too much all.
- 57:48Right. Sheldon, anything on Calandra
- 57:50that you noticed stat wise anything like that?
- 57:54He really struggles a lot when he's blitz.
- 57:56I also found in terms of average time to throw about 2.7 seconds
- 58:01which is middle of the pack. He's very good when he has at
- 58:03least 2.5 seconds to throw, which is where the PFF makes the
- 58:07cut off, but struggles a lot with less than 2.5 seconds.
- 58:10Now some of those splits can be, you know, not exactly what you
- 58:13think. Sometimes a guy might have a
- 58:14better passer rating when he has less time to throw because if
- 58:18that's what the offense demands, like you know you get the ball
- 58:20out quickly, but in UV as case they need more time to throw
- 58:23because they are. A little bit more reliant on
- 58:25deep balls, and obviously those routes take longer to develop.
- 58:28So when he has at least 2.5 seconds, about 17 yards, average
- 58:33depth of target, and when he's less than 2.5 seconds to throw,
- 58:37he's run for interceptions. So bottom line, and we'll talk
- 58:40about this in our keys to the game, Get to the quarterback A.
- 58:45100% get to the quarterback. All right, we're going to talk
- 58:48about one more guy here, Brian. We're going to talk about Kobe
- 58:50Pace. Running back 5 foot 10215 lbs
- 58:55Cedartown, GA came out 247 as a three star.
- 58:59One of the top 35 running backs in the country when he came out
- 59:02last year. Again this is another true
- 59:04freshman in this case and if you take a look at his sort of
- 59:08profile recruiting, he went to Clemson first.
- 59:11He was in Clemson, excuse me, as a transfer.
- 59:14So he is a third year player here.
- 59:16Had a lot of good offers coming out of high school.
- 59:19I'm seeing on here Auburn, we're seeing Duke, we're seeing some
- 59:22interest from Georgia Tech, Michigan, Nebraska, NC State.
- 59:25So he was definitely one of those players that a lot of
- 59:28people pegged And so far this season, solid season so far,
- 59:33well, maybe not solid, kind of like 368 yards, only one
- 59:37touchdown, less than 3 1/2 per carry.
- 59:41And Brian, you've already mentioned a little bit about him
- 59:44earlier, but let's let's just break it down.
- 59:47Yeah man, Much like your boy hits the whole hard, runs
- 59:50through arm tackles, he finishes the run strong.
- 59:55He's not as effective outside the tackles as he is between the
- 59:58tackles. I think Curtis is freezing up on
- 1:00:00us here again there, So we caught a little bit of this
- 1:00:02before we went live, so ignore the the, the awkward freeze
- 1:00:08frame here. But yeah, pace is not a home run
- 1:00:12threat. He's not a guy that's going to
- 1:00:13get a ton of yards. As he's as he's running there
- 1:00:17he's more of a guy that's going to kind of get those gashes here
- 1:00:20and there move the sticks get that kind of you know good five
- 1:00:23or six yards on 1st down. But but he's not a guy that's
- 1:00:27going to be a home run threat. But the way they are able to hit
- 1:00:30the the home run threat to the passing game he's really a good
- 1:00:32compliment for what they're doing right now and and I'll
- 1:00:37just kind of go ahead and pivot since Curtis is is is is Mia
- 1:00:40here let's go ahead and talk about the offensive line because
- 1:00:43that that's always what we are we are offensive line podcast
- 1:00:48here so we got we got to talk about the offensive line and
- 1:00:51overall this is a bad unit guys it's really hard to even say
- 1:00:55what they struggle with the most.
- 1:00:57When I look at it on tape, rushing attack is is good enough
- 1:01:02at times to complement the deep ball, especially with pace in
- 1:01:05there because he can kind of get some of those extra yards when
- 1:01:08he's dragging defenders and things like that.
- 1:01:10But they go for long stretches where the running game kind of
- 1:01:14can get stale on them and that that hurts their passing game.
- 1:01:17And they also surrender a lot of sacks.
- 1:01:19So really there's no good metric for them.
- 1:01:22I mean, I can let Sheldon talk about their their numbers a
- 1:01:25little bit here, but just looking at them on tape, they're
- 1:01:28not really good or stand out in any one area.
- 1:01:32We need to find who that Parker Clemens is and attack that
- 1:01:35motherfucker, whoever he is. Go in here.
- 1:01:39Yeah, for sure. Well you mentioned the running
- 1:01:41backs their their running back explosive play numbers are
- 1:01:44pretty bad. I mean I know that you know pace
- 1:01:47and and Hollands are you know at the bottom of the barrel in
- 1:01:50terms of you know generating big plays in the running game.
- 1:01:52Now some of that of course you know obviously the offensive
- 1:01:54line. So you know just digging into
- 1:01:56some of their numbers, pass protection, it's been really,
- 1:01:59really bad for UVA. So they have the second worst
- 1:02:01pass block efficiency grade in the ACC.
- 1:02:04They leave the ACC and sacks and total pressures allowed.
- 1:02:08So UVA is you know, they they don't throw the ball necessarily
- 1:02:12a huge amount. It's probably middle of the
- 1:02:13pack. But the fact that they're
- 1:02:15getting up so many pressures, with that being said is is
- 1:02:18pretty is a is a pretty bad sign for them.
- 1:02:20So they just they haven't been able to do anything on the
- 1:02:22ground. They have not been able to
- 1:02:24protect the quarterback and you know, as you can see it's a it's
- 1:02:26a struggling offense. Yeah, I mean they definitely
- 1:02:31struggled just watching them. It's been very up and down.
- 1:02:33Even in the Duke game where they had some stand up moments on
- 1:02:36offense, they would have stretches where they just
- 1:02:38struggled to move the ball. So it's going to be interesting
- 1:02:41to see, you know, if we can come out and set the tone a little
- 1:02:45bit defensively and kind of get them out of what they like to do
- 1:02:48and what they do well. And if we're bringing bringing
- 1:02:50those pressures, like like Sheldon alluded to, if we're if
- 1:02:52we're blitzing them, if we're getting to them quickly with our
- 1:02:56edge rushers, how much of a long day it can be for for AC there.
- 1:03:03Let's go ahead and flip over to the defensive side here.
- 1:03:06You know, this is a John Rozinski defense hybrid,
- 1:03:11multiple front scheme. Curtis is back in the building
- 1:03:15here. Hey, we made it to defense
- 1:03:16without you, man. Good job guys.
- 1:03:19Teamwork there, there we go. So as I was saying, this is a
- 1:03:23hybrid multiple front scheme predicated on stopping the run.
- 1:03:28They bring a lot of different looks and pressures.
- 1:03:32They're pretty solid on 1st and 2nd down.
- 1:03:34They struggle a lot on 3rd down, not not a lot of sacks either.
- 1:03:37They don't get after the quarterback very well.
- 1:03:39So that's kind of what you can expect from the defensive side.
- 1:03:42From a scheme perspective, Sheldon, I don't know if you
- 1:03:45have any any statistics on them that you want to bring in before
- 1:03:48we move on to the players here. Yeah.
- 1:03:51So just a couple, I know Curtis asked about their their dements
- 1:03:54of line metrics. So it's been pretty rough this
- 1:03:57year they are 121st nationally and success rate against so
- 1:04:01right around 46% and their running game, their run defense
- 1:04:04has actually been worse 125th and success rate.
- 1:04:07So you know they they let up 27 against against Duke.
- 1:04:11I mean it just, you know, it's again it's it's a team that's
- 1:04:14been up and down, they've been playing a little bit better.
- 1:04:17You know, they gave up 45 points to Georgia Tech and then had an
- 1:04:20OK performance against Louisville, who obviously has a
- 1:04:21really good offense. So it's just a question of what
- 1:04:24what UVA team do you get, But certainly the season metrics
- 1:04:27would tell you that this is a a a defense and a run defense in
- 1:04:30particular that has really struggled all.
- 1:04:33Righty. And when I hear something like
- 1:04:35that and I take a look at the leading tackler, and that's the
- 1:04:38first guy we're going to talk about, it's Jonas Sanker.
- 1:04:41Jonas Sanker 6 foot, 190 LB Safety for this team. 97
- 1:04:47tackles, 3 tackles for loss, no picks, 10 pass deflections and
- 1:04:52several forced fumbles out there.
- 1:04:54When he came out in the class of 2021, another one who stayed
- 1:05:01home, he went to the Covenant School that might be 10 miles
- 1:05:04from UVA's campus. He was ranked as an 85 to 33rd
- 1:05:08best player in Virginia. Other interests?
- 1:05:10Boston College, Air Force. In Ohio with a few other looks
- 1:05:16from FCS school, so not the biggest one there.
- 1:05:19But Brian, what are you seeing from him?
- 1:05:22Because that is a lot of tackles for a safety regardless where
- 1:05:26they play. Yeah.
- 1:05:28And you know, we, you know, we talked about it's a hybrid
- 1:05:30multiple front. Their base package is a 425 and
- 1:05:33he is a true Rover box safety. He's in the box a lot.
- 1:05:38They like to bring him on run blitzes and an obvious passing
- 1:05:41situation. So they'll blitz him, you know
- 1:05:441st through 3rd down there, hard hitter and solid tackler as
- 1:05:49evidenced by the force fumbles there.
- 1:05:52He can get turned around in his own coverage though.
- 1:05:54They don't use him a ton in that capacity.
- 1:05:58But I mean he's he's really the the defensive player that kind
- 1:06:00of pops off for them when you when you watch the tape because
- 1:06:04he's a he's a little bit of, he's all over the place and he's
- 1:06:06making some plays. Hit them up and hit you.
- 1:06:10You better hit him. Don't don't shy away from the
- 1:06:12contact. You got to start early and
- 1:06:14often. You got to go at him and you got
- 1:06:15to not be scared so. Exactly.
- 1:06:19Yeah, yeah, definitely somebody did.
- 1:06:22If you can hit him back a little bit, you can kind of, you know,
- 1:06:24take his game back to him and, you know, put him on his heels.
- 1:06:28All righty. So again.
- 1:06:32It's what Kelly said several times with Brian mentioned what
- 1:06:35we've all talked about. Don't let him set the tone.
- 1:06:40He comes and hits up through the shoulder into him.
- 1:06:42Let him come down with you and talk to shit as he goes down.
- 1:06:46All righty. So let's talk about the
- 1:06:48defensive line next. As we you know already heard
- 1:06:50from Shelton has been some issues there but one guy that
- 1:06:53kind of stood out to me was and for Muay class of 2018 was an 84
- 1:07:00when he came out. He is from.
- 1:07:02Kapola High School in Kapola, Hawaii.
- 1:07:04He is a long, long way from home but he is a big boy, 6 foot 2300
- 1:07:10and 2 lbs and so far this year So far for his career.
- 1:07:15Solid career so far at UVA has been there now six years.
- 1:07:19Last two years combining for 62 tackles, 12 tackles for the last
- 1:07:23five sacks this year. Not quite the campaign of the
- 1:07:27last two years. Only 30 tackles, no sacks, 6 1/2
- 1:07:30tackles for loss, but one interesting piece, 3 pass
- 1:07:34deflection which is pretty high on this team.
- 1:07:36Tells him he likes to get those hands up.
- 1:07:38Brian what are we seeing with Aaron?
- 1:07:41Yeah, he's he's going to play that 3 technique in their base
- 1:07:44package slide to A4, four eye when they're showing those three
- 1:07:48man fronts with it, which they'll do on occasion, Probably
- 1:07:52their strongest run defender overall, good with his hands and
- 1:07:55sheds blocks pretty well. They're in the trenches and
- 1:07:59he'll push the pocket occasionally on those drop
- 1:08:00backs. But again, this isn't a team
- 1:08:02that gets a ton of sacks, but he's definitely got the kind of
- 1:08:05speed up the quarterbacks timing a little bit with that.
- 1:08:08All right. Sean, you said you had something
- 1:08:09on Aaron here. Yep.
- 1:08:11So you look at stops on PFF, which is a tackle considered a
- 1:08:16loss of the defense. Famaoui is 13 ACC with 19 stops
- 1:08:21in the season. So you know his grades aren't
- 1:08:24quite a side, but you know he's going to make, he's going to
- 1:08:26make a lot of big. Tackles.
- 1:08:28All righty, tell anything you notice on tape with him or
- 1:08:30anything you notice just reading about him or.
- 1:08:34Play them every year. We're kind of familiar with
- 1:08:36their players and and how they play.
- 1:08:38He's been there for a while and he does his job.
- 1:08:41You know, not super flashy, but kind of like Brian says, he's
- 1:08:44he's good against the run. He shares, he shares blockers,
- 1:08:48good offensive line. Got to do some work, man.
- 1:08:52You got to, you got to, you got to, you got to give us some
- 1:08:54yards. You know, if they give two in
- 1:08:56some room he can, he'll make this defense pay.
- 1:09:00But they got to, they got to go get it.
- 1:09:02Yeah, big, big thing is getting those a good first step, getting
- 1:09:06your hands on him, making sure he's not getting your hands
- 1:09:08down, getting like a quick swimmer rip without significant
- 1:09:12contact because that's really where he makes his hay is using
- 1:09:16those hands and kind of getting away from that blocker real
- 1:09:18quick in the snap. So if you can get get on him,
- 1:09:21engage him a little bit, that'll slow up what he does best.
- 1:09:25All righty Well let's look the one more piece on the defense
- 1:09:28here and let's take a look at the linebacker room.
- 1:09:31Got a number of guys to choose from.
- 1:09:32I I went with the guy that's a little bit closer to Virginia
- 1:09:36Tech than the other ones and that was James Jackson the six
- 1:09:39foot three, 225 LB linebacker. I believe he is the will on this
- 1:09:45team, 84 when he came out in 2021 with the North Cross High
- 1:09:50School in Roanoke. I think we're all familiar with
- 1:09:53that one and right now I'm having a really good junior
- 1:09:57season, Red shirt. Sophomore season, however you
- 1:09:59want to say it. 76 tackles, 4 for loss, one pick, one sack, 3
- 1:10:04pass deflected as well. Brian What are we seeing with
- 1:10:07James Jackson? Yeah, I mean, he's he's not
- 1:10:11really that guy that's going to really pop off on tape.
- 1:10:14But what he is, he's a very disciplined linebacker in the
- 1:10:17run game. He's very few mistakes.
- 1:10:20He's not out of place very often.
- 1:10:23He's not a guy getting blocked 5-10 yards off the line of
- 1:10:26scrimmage. Sheds blockers pretty well.
- 1:10:29Sure. Tackler, solid when he's in zone
- 1:10:32responsibilities. He does lack some athleticism
- 1:10:35for coverage, especially in those man to man situations, but
- 1:10:39he's kind of one of those guys that's just, you know,
- 1:10:42fundamentals and discipline are pretty good.
- 1:10:44So he ends up making a ton of plays.
- 1:10:47All righty, Tally. Anything on him?
- 1:10:49I know, Tally. You mentioned Robinson, right?
- 1:10:53Yeah, Cam Robinson. Yeah, I know we didn't have him
- 1:10:55down, but you know recruiting battle that we lost to UVA and
- 1:10:59he's a freshman linebacker. That's just he's a good player.
- 1:11:03I think he's got a couple of sacks on the season.
- 1:11:05I mean a couple of picks on the season.
- 1:11:07I don't know about the sacks, but if you watch him play, he's
- 1:11:10just sideline to sideline man. You know not.
- 1:11:13Of course he's a freshman, so he's not going to be quite as.
- 1:11:17A handful, as Peyton Wilson was, but he's a good linebacker.
- 1:11:21You know his time there. If he stays at UVA, he'll he'll
- 1:11:24do some good stuff there because he's a good ball player.
- 1:11:27Yeah, he he's got great athleticism and you know, he's
- 1:11:31still learning to play the position at this level.
- 1:11:34So he's he's sometimes out of place, he's sometimes not doing,
- 1:11:37you know, everything you want him to do.
- 1:11:39But he does it fast. He does it at 100 mph and he
- 1:11:44looks the part. He doesn't look out of place out
- 1:11:46there. So that that's big for a true
- 1:11:48freshman. All righty.
- 1:11:51Boys, let's click it over and let's talk about the hokey keys
- 1:11:54to this game. Brian, you got your name up here
- 1:11:57first, so I'm going to let you kick it off.
- 1:11:59What do we have to do to have success in this game?
- 1:12:02I know it's a broken record, but we need a fast start on both
- 1:12:05sides and I'm talking about at least a touchdown advantage
- 1:12:09after the first quarter. I said it at the open, they
- 1:12:12score a lot of points on their first two drives, probably like
- 1:12:163030% or something of their scoring has come on their first
- 1:12:20two drives of the game. So it's a it's a pretty high
- 1:12:24percentage. If we can slow them down out the
- 1:12:27gate and we can get a A score to ourselves, I'll feel really good
- 1:12:30about the way the the game will go after that.
- 1:12:33All righty. Sheldon, what you got?
- 1:12:36Gotta get to the quarterback, gotta make Calandra
- 1:12:37uncomfortable and bring him down.
- 1:12:39Like I said, UVA is a team that relies on on deep throws and
- 1:12:44when Calandria has time to throw he is very effective.
- 1:12:47So when you get APR cooking, I need more from him.
- 1:12:50I have not seen as much as I would like over the past few
- 1:12:52games. So.
- 1:12:53So get him, get him going and get some sacks.
- 1:12:56That's that's going to be big and that's how that just, you
- 1:12:58know, bring pressure. Trust your quarterbacks.
- 1:13:00I think they're going to hold up well on main coverage and I
- 1:13:03think the Vt is going to have to outscore UVA this weekend.
- 1:13:06Tally, what about you? Time a possession and don't turn
- 1:13:09the ball over. Do not turn the ball over.
- 1:13:13You win the game. All righty, I'm, I'm going to go
- 1:13:17with this one right here, he says.
- 1:13:19Don't turn the ball over. Force turnovers.
- 1:13:21This team is one of the worst in the country.
- 1:13:24They are 116th. They have 18 turnovers this
- 1:13:29year, total 18. That's a lot.
- 1:13:33That's almost to a game. We need I I think we can get at
- 1:13:38least one pick because I think there's going to be situations
- 1:13:41because if you look at the data they do get they they they also
- 1:13:45give up a lot of sacks. They've given up.
- 1:13:47Let me look at this number. She has 37 sacks this year.
- 1:13:50They've given up a ton of tackles for loss.
- 1:13:52We're going to put them in bad situations.
- 1:13:55Colin's going to throw at least one pick.
- 1:13:57I think 2:00. We could probably run away with
- 1:13:59the game. But if we only get one, it's
- 1:14:01going to be tight, and I can definitely foresee one based on
- 1:14:04how he plays. Also, he likes to talk shit, so
- 1:14:07he's probably going to challenge somebody and get his ass perked.
- 1:14:10Don't bail them out on those third and longs though.
- 1:14:13No, do not bail them out. Yeah, do not bail.
- 1:14:16All right, Well, it's time for predictions and big screeners
- 1:14:19boys. This segment presented by Prize
- 1:14:21Picks Prize picks daily fantasy app where you make entries based
- 1:14:25on players projected outcomes. And they will match any deposit
- 1:14:29up to $100. When you sign up using BC picks
- 1:14:33or use the QR code there, you can see it.
- 1:14:35And it is not just for football season, it's for basketball.
- 1:14:38It's for baseball. So you can do this all year
- 1:14:42around. Let's have a look at it here and
- 1:14:45let's go to our predictions. Ron, I don't know what order you
- 1:14:49have them in. Do you have Sheldon first?
- 1:14:51Sheldon's leading off. We're just going to go back
- 1:14:53around the horn to me. All right, Sheldon.
- 1:14:57What you got on? This Yep, I think that's going
- 1:14:59to be a high scoring ball game. I got Tech winning just because,
- 1:15:02well, it's UVA and we own them. So even though I do have some
- 1:15:06trepidations about this game, I do think the Hokies will win a
- 1:15:08close ball game. So give me Tech.
- 1:15:10All right, I am right there with Sheldon.
- 1:15:15I've got this as a not quite as high scoring as he probably has
- 1:15:19it. I've got it a 30 to 20 victory
- 1:15:21for the Hokies. I think we jump out on them
- 1:15:23early. I think we establish ourselves
- 1:15:26on offense. I think we're making make them
- 1:15:29play catch up a little bit where we can tee off on them with our
- 1:15:33pass rushers and put them in bad situations, force a couple
- 1:15:36turnovers and that's the difference in the game.
- 1:15:39All righty. Now I'm next tell you get to go
- 1:15:42last. I I I thought I'd go last.
- 1:15:46I'm with the Hokies on this one as well.
- 1:15:47I think it is going to be. I hope it is not my prediction.
- 1:15:51I hope it is. Much worse than my prediction,
- 1:15:55but I think the Hokies are going to take this game.
- 1:15:57We are the more talented team, we have more experience on our
- 1:16:00side and I think we take this game 27 to 20 at Lane Stadium.
- 1:16:06N tally, you get to wrap this one up.
- 1:16:09Yeah, I'm going to go. I'm going to go Virginia Tech.
- 1:16:12I'm going to go Vt on this one. I have been fading.
- 1:16:15The Hokies didn't work last week.
- 1:16:18I was hoping we get a win when I.
- 1:16:21I'm not pick North Carolina State, but I I honestly think we
- 1:16:23win this game. Even my prediction before the
- 1:16:26season started when I went through and you know, you
- 1:16:28picking teams and stuff, I kind of felt like it would come down
- 1:16:31to us going there and having to get a win and be bowl eligible.
- 1:16:35And I just think that you know it's time.
- 1:16:39You know this is this is what we this is what we need to do.
- 1:16:42And again with the quarterback adding a little bit more fuel to
- 1:16:45the fire, I think that I think we go and get the win.
- 1:16:48I don't have a prediction just yet, but I think we get the win.
- 1:16:51Yeah, and I and I think it's this and I think it's not only
- 1:16:54this podcast, but I think it's team.
- 1:16:56I think the coaches and I think this fan base need that bowl.
- 1:16:59I think it's a mental thing. There are a lot of people that
- 1:17:03are screaming not a successful season, bad season.
- 1:17:08If we you know you, you, you, you look at the steps and all
- 1:17:13that. I think you go in there and we
- 1:17:15take the win Saturday. Things are looking up for a lot
- 1:17:19of people, so let let's talk about that a little bit.
- 1:17:22Let's talk about that a little bit since we're here.
- 1:17:24We can do it. Is is this season a failure if
- 1:17:28we don't make a bowl? No, because I mean that That's
- 1:17:35been a big, big piece of chatter out there on the Twitter sphere
- 1:17:40when I look at it. And I'll shout out PB here
- 1:17:44because PB kind of started this discourse.
- 1:17:48When we look at whether it's a failure or success, I think it's
- 1:17:54a little more nuanced than that because I think there are, I've
- 1:17:58seen enough building blocks where I am comfortable with what
- 1:18:03we're working with. So I would not call this season
- 1:18:07a failure, but it would certainly be a disappointment to
- 1:18:10not make a bowl and not make a bowl by losing to your in state
- 1:18:13rival that on paper should not beat you.
- 1:18:17So it would be a disappointment, but not a absolute failure in my
- 1:18:21eyes. Tally.
- 1:18:23Yeah, I wouldn't say it to be a failure just because of, like
- 1:18:28Brian said, some of the building blocks that we found, you know,
- 1:18:30I feel like we found some wide receivers, we found some stud
- 1:18:34quarterback, we found a stud running back, depending on how
- 1:18:38that goes into next year, knowing what we got.
- 1:18:42But. We've evaluated some good talent
- 1:18:45and brought in some good talent, so I wouldn't say that the
- 1:18:47season is a failure compared to what we did last year, but it
- 1:18:51would. It would be disappointing to not
- 1:18:53go in and go in and and win this game because of the nature of
- 1:18:59the game. You know it's a road game, we
- 1:19:01haven't produced well on the road, blah, blah, blah blah blah
- 1:19:04blah. We can go into all that, but I
- 1:19:06wouldn't say it's a failure. I think, Brian, the way you put
- 1:19:11it, it's the. The the the game Saturday.
- 1:19:14If we don't win it's losing a battle.
- 1:19:17It's not losing the war because the way the war looks like is
- 1:19:20we're taking those like you said building blocks.
- 1:19:22We're taking steps forward. We're evaluating talent.
- 1:19:25We're able to bring people in and tally you mentioned a couple
- 1:19:28times especially regardless of our record it it's you go on the
- 1:19:32trail and say you know we only brought and I was saying
- 1:19:35beforehand drones Tooting Lane. Felton.
- 1:19:40And APR on the defensive side, no knock to Canteen.
- 1:19:43I think the second day would have been just as solid without
- 1:19:47him. We brought in a handful of
- 1:19:50players and we have went from getting shit on playing bad for
- 1:19:56multiple weeks looking terrible last year until the last week of
- 1:19:59the season to. Blowing teams out, being
- 1:20:03competitive in other games, three of the five, the six
- 1:20:07losses we have right now or two teams that are a combined, if I
- 1:20:11can get the math right here, 29 and 5 or 28 and 5:00 that's
- 1:20:17three of our losses, 28 and five is their record.
- 1:20:22Think about that, so. And two of those losses that.
- 1:20:27You know are are on the other side where you hold that because
- 1:20:30we need to get the liquor flowing to have that
- 1:20:32conversation. The liquor will be flowing.
- 1:20:35We're not ready for that one. We're going, we're going to save
- 1:20:37that one for December 22nd. Mark your calendar, Evan.
- 1:20:40Evan Williams Mark your calendars.
- 1:20:42December Evan Williams up top there.
- 1:20:45Moonshine Below me, 4 finger Scotches and whatever Shelton's
- 1:20:48going to drink that night. All right, whatever.
- 1:20:51You're going to drink that night because you let it all hang
- 1:20:53loose. All right, well, guess what?
- 1:20:55We got other games to pick here because it is rivalry week, and
- 1:20:58to me, this is the week that makes college football, right?
- 1:21:01We were going through throwing games out there that we were
- 1:21:03looking at and this is the week that makes college football
- 1:21:06because crazy shit happens this. Week and it's fun to pick up
- 1:21:10even when the teams aren't necessarily on the same
- 1:21:13trajectory. Record wise, You damn right you
- 1:21:15damn right it is. All right, Tally, you got the
- 1:21:18first one. What is your pick for this week?
- 1:21:24What did I have? Who did I have?
- 1:21:26Did I have Ole Miss? And, yeah, the Egg Bowl.
- 1:21:28Yeah, the Egg Bowl. Yeah, you be Thanksgiving Day
- 1:21:32eating you some Turkey and dressing.
- 1:21:35Got to have a cranberry sauce on.
- 1:21:37If y'all do gimlet gravy. Put all that on there.
- 1:21:39Have your nice plate. Watch the Egg Bowl.
- 1:21:43But I'm going to take Ole Miss in that game.
- 1:21:45I just, I mean, Mississippi State just fired that coach.
- 1:21:48I think Ole Miss is the better team.
- 1:21:52All righty. Who's the next one behind there?
- 1:21:55Sheldon, who you got on this game?
- 1:21:57Mississippi State breaking a new head coach.
- 1:21:59You give me all miss, I think. I think Kiffin's going to have
- 1:22:03those boys ready to play. All right.
- 1:22:07Brian, who you taking? I'm chasing this one with Ole
- 1:22:10Miss as well, man. You know when you get a new
- 1:22:15coach in there, it's going to go one or two ways.
- 1:22:17You're either going to overplay your hand or you going to.
- 1:22:20Just come out there and put a dud out there.
- 1:22:22I feel like this has dud written all over it, so give me your Ole
- 1:22:24Miss. All righty.
- 1:22:25So a couple things for for a announcement selection here.
- 1:22:29The game is in Starkville so if you got multiple TV's, put it on
- 1:22:33the one that you ain't got the sound on unless you want to hear
- 1:22:36cowbells all night. That's 1-2.
- 1:22:41Mississippi State is one win away from being bowl eligible.
- 1:22:45One win 3. Have we not seen some of the
- 1:22:50craziest shit in this game over the last like 10 years?
- 1:22:53The the home. What was his name that got the
- 1:22:56touchdown? Did the dog pissing thing?
- 1:22:58They missed the point. Elijah the dog missed the extra
- 1:23:02point because they got packed up.
- 1:23:05So many wild things happen in this game is a 730 kick.
- 1:23:09But in this reality Ole Miss is on the verge of potentially
- 1:23:12getting a potentially getting a New Year's 6 bowl.
- 1:23:18They're nine and two they go, they do go 10 and two.
- 1:23:22I wish we didn't have the hook because I believe it could be a
- 1:23:2610 point game, but I'm, I'm going to go with Lane liking to
- 1:23:29run up to score and he'll score one late to win by 14.
- 1:23:34All righty, what's the next one? Oh, I'm the next one, Brian.
- 1:23:37You're the next one. We go out West, we go to Eugene,
- 1:23:40OR we go to the Civil War. Oregon State, Oregon, Wow.
- 1:23:46That game on Saturday night, I watched just about all I got
- 1:23:49back home, watched just about all of Oregon and Washington.
- 1:23:53That was a great game to watch. Great game to well matched
- 1:23:58teams. So when I looked at this game,
- 1:24:00it's a lot of rivalry, a lot of bitter hatred.
- 1:24:04Oregon leaving the conference next year.
- 1:24:06If Y'all didn't notice, Oregon State and Washington State have
- 1:24:10basically been given the OK. They will be a two team
- 1:24:13conference next year. I don't know how that works.
- 1:24:16But that's fun. That's got to be fucking fun.
- 1:24:19Oh my God. But in this case, you know,
- 1:24:23Oregon on the doorstep. I think Oregon's already
- 1:24:26clinched it. Oregon potentially chance again.
- 1:24:30Potentially could win the PAC 12, could potentially go to the
- 1:24:36playoffs if things break right. But 13 1/2 is just too much in a
- 1:24:42game like this. Especially.
- 1:24:44And I know Oregon State is like heartbroken, but ain't nothing
- 1:24:48like having the boys just up the street.
- 1:24:51Give me Oregon State take the 13 1/2 game a lot closer than
- 1:24:55people are predicting. Tally I'm.
- 1:24:59Just going to, I'm going to take Oregon, man.
- 1:25:01They trying to get Bonix to Heisman, so they're going to try
- 1:25:03to let him sling it as much as they can.
- 1:25:06Are they going to try to run that score up with a a good, a
- 1:25:09good opponent in a rivalry game? I'm taking Oregon Shelton.
- 1:25:17Oregon is 8, two and one against the spread of this season.
- 1:25:20They're playing hot. I like the Ducks.
- 1:25:22All righty. And Mr. Siegelow.
- 1:25:26I'm riding with what Curtis is spitting there.
- 1:25:29I think this is going to be a tighter game than to think
- 1:25:31people looking at. I think it's still probably
- 1:25:34going to be a 10 point victory for the Ducks but I think that
- 1:25:38it's going to be pretty close there down to the end.
- 1:25:41All righty, as Brian puts Oregon State on the board.
- 1:25:44Brian, you've got the next one. What rivalry game did you
- 1:25:47choose? Had to go with Gators and FSU
- 1:25:51after the Jordan Travis situation.
- 1:25:53This is going to be a a very interesting match up here
- 1:25:58because you got. You know, undefeated Florida
- 1:26:00State still trying to keep their hopes alive here for the College
- 1:26:04Football Playoff ACC championship is already the game
- 1:26:08is already booked there but obviously you know winning the
- 1:26:11championship is still at play here.
- 1:26:13So this is, this is going to be an interesting match up here.
- 1:26:15I think Florida is a good match up, especially with with Travis
- 1:26:20out there but I think it's just going to be too much town on the
- 1:26:24Seminole side. So give me Florida State.
- 1:26:28All righty. Yeah, I'm up next on this one
- 1:26:30little Sunshine State showdown. I think Florida State is going
- 1:26:36to win the game, but without Jordan Travis, I don't think
- 1:26:40they're going to quite blow out Florida like we see.
- 1:26:42I think this is going to be a tight one.
- 1:26:44I do think Tate Rodhamaker is probably good enough to lead
- 1:26:47them over the Gators. All of the Gators are getting
- 1:26:50our playing for. Gators are playing for bowl
- 1:26:55eligibility so give me the Gators give me the points tally
- 1:27:01I'm. Going to take Florida State.
- 1:27:03I think Florida's quarterback is hurt as well.
- 1:27:06The starting quarterback is hurt, if I'm not mistaken.
- 1:27:10Again, Jordan Travis is a amazing player.
- 1:27:13I hate that his college career comes to an end like that, but
- 1:27:18he got nothing to hold his head down.
- 1:27:19I mean he he brought Florida State back to relevancy.
- 1:27:22So I'm going to go Florida State and Sheldon.
- 1:27:27Yeah, I'm going Florida. I think they're playing on the
- 1:27:30road. FSU's playing on the road.
- 1:27:32I think they're going to. They're going to take some time
- 1:27:33to get adjusted to the new quarterback.
- 1:27:34So give me, give me Florida. All righty.
- 1:27:38All righty. So we got that one.
- 1:27:40Sheldon, you got to pick the next one.
- 1:27:41What game did you choose? Well, have to look at it.
- 1:27:47I believe I had the game. Is that correct?
- 1:27:50Yep. So, oh, how is it in Michigan?
- 1:27:52I was just talking about with a friend earlier this evening.
- 1:27:55This game might honestly be the most consequential and important
- 1:28:00comfortable game in the last 10 years.
- 1:28:02I know that might sound crazy, but when you look at what's at
- 1:28:04stake with Ohio State potential losing three straight to
- 1:28:07Michigan, CFP hopes on the line, National title hopes on the
- 1:28:09line, Michigan With all the stuff they've gone through this
- 1:28:11season and the the after effect that would happen if they'd lost
- 1:28:15to Ohio State, this is such a huge game.
- 1:28:18I cannot even put into words how big of a game this is.
- 1:28:20So with that being said, I am going with.
- 1:28:24Ohio State to cover -2.5 3.5. You got a 3 1/2 cover.
- 1:28:32I think the line moved down before we picked it, so 3 1/2.
- 1:28:35All righty. Brian, what are you saying on
- 1:28:37this one? I think Michigan's got a little
- 1:28:42bit of a chip on their shoulder with everything that they got
- 1:28:44going on this season. I think that Ohio State is going
- 1:28:47to give them a good shot early, but I think it's going to be too
- 1:28:51much Michigan in the end. I think it is going to come down
- 1:28:54to about a about a six point game there, but I I got the
- 1:28:57Wolverines coming out on top on this one, all righty and I am
- 1:29:02picking next and two really good defenses.
- 1:29:07I think we both see that 2 elite defenses and like you said
- 1:29:11everything that's been going on all season.
- 1:29:16You know especially with the whole horrible thing and all
- 1:29:20this stuff that did Ryan Day hire the private investigator to
- 1:29:24start all this shit. Saturday's game's in Ann Arbor.
- 1:29:29The Hyatt game kick is going to be 32° it is going to be clear a
- 1:29:34little slight breeze of 5 miles an hour and I think this is
- 1:29:38going to be old school big 10 war.
- 1:29:41War. I mean, I think I see this game
- 1:29:44like 20-17 and I think Michigan is going to win this game
- 1:29:50potentially on a last second like field goal.
- 1:29:53But that hook? Give me Ohio State.
- 1:29:56Ohio State covers. Give me Michigan.
- 1:29:59They got coaches up there crying like Harbaugh Dead.
- 1:30:02I mean, you can't lose. When you got that much emotion,
- 1:30:06can you Shoot? Give me Michigan.
- 1:30:08All righty. All righty.
- 1:30:10Brian, what did we pick for the last?
- 1:30:12Because these are some great rivalries.
- 1:30:13Commonwealth Cup up top, Egg Bowl, Civil War.
- 1:30:16Sunshine Showdown, The Game. What's our last one?
- 1:30:20Iron Bowl, baby. Tally, we did that for you.
- 1:30:24That's a good one. We did it for you.
- 1:30:27That's going to dictate. That's going to dictate about
- 1:30:29two weeks for me. That Crimson and White team
- 1:30:34lose. Yeah, it's going to be a lot of
- 1:30:36wives in the hospital. Oh shit, Black.
- 1:30:39Eyes and and busted lips with bill bottles and all types of
- 1:30:46shit, bro, that was. It How many TV's are going to
- 1:30:48have to get purchased? I can't remember my man that's
- 1:30:52on TikTok, the whole dude. I think his name is Willie.
- 1:30:55Go look up Alabama fan Willie on TikTok and you.
- 1:30:59You going to see what Alabama fans feel about Auburn and how
- 1:31:03they act? All righty, Well let's pick the
- 1:31:06game now. Bama is laying 14 1/2 points.
- 1:31:10Auburn loss to the Jerry Kill LED New Mexico State Lobos, I
- 1:31:16think. He's Jerry.
- 1:31:16Kill Truthers 9 and Three. We're out there.
- 1:31:22Why didn't we just hire him to be the offensive coordinator
- 1:31:25back in 2019? Shit.
- 1:31:27All right. All right.
- 1:31:28Brian, who you got in this one? After that performance last week
- 1:31:33by Auburn, I'm I'm leaning bam on this.
- 1:31:34So I think it's about 17. It is going to be the final.
- 1:31:37Alabama's playing as good as I've seen them play here this
- 1:31:43year. Obviously they had a rough
- 1:31:45September, but they really turned it around, got their legs
- 1:31:48under them in October, and it really last three or four weeks
- 1:31:51have been playing some really good football.
- 1:31:52So I'm going to take BAMMA here. All righty.
- 1:31:55I got to be a little different here.
- 1:31:57I'm going to take Auburn because I don't think they can
- 1:31:59potentially play as bad as they did last weekend.
- 1:32:01Hugh Freeze does have sort of a knack for having Nick Saban's
- 1:32:06number. I don't think he has the talent.
- 1:32:08I don't think he is quite there yet with Auburn.
- 1:32:12But I I just because how Bama plays this year and I know
- 1:32:15they've scored more of the last few weeks, I think I can take 14
- 1:32:201/2. I'll probably be sitting here on
- 1:32:22Saturday afternoon hopefully enjoying you know 56 nothing on
- 1:32:28this TV and watching the end of the Bama game over here with it
- 1:32:31being like a 14 point win, 13 point win for Bama.
- 1:32:34So you give me the points Callie, how you feeling on this
- 1:32:39one? You close to new?
- 1:32:40One man I got to take Bama. They just clicking at the right
- 1:32:44time Right now Hugh Freeze has got.
- 1:32:49Some work to do as far as putting some people in place.
- 1:32:53Quarterback position is where he's got to get a little bit
- 1:32:55better. But I will say, I will say, like
- 1:32:57Curtis said, he has a knack for beating Nick Saban.
- 1:33:01He knows how to beat Saban. I just don't think he's going to
- 1:33:04do it this week. Am I on an island by myself,
- 1:33:11Sheldon? Yes.
- 1:33:15I'll take Bama. I feel like they've gotten
- 1:33:17better every week and for some reason people just don't like
- 1:33:19talk about them because you know teams like Washington, Oregon
- 1:33:22and Michigan are sort of the the, the hot topics.
- 1:33:25But they just, I mean if you look at what they've done since
- 1:33:28the USF game, I mean they've been really, really good.
- 1:33:30So I I take Bama Roll. All right, he says Bama roll.
- 1:33:35All righty. So Brian, Tally, Sheldon, has
- 1:33:40anything broken since we started an hour and 34 minutes ago?
- 1:33:45We can go ahead and announce that next Tuesday we will have
- 1:33:48Pete be on air with us joining us to breakdown whatever happens
- 1:33:53at UVA this week and to talk a little championship week.
- 1:33:57Peter, Peter B from Too Deep. Awesome.
- 1:34:03Good to hear that. Glad we got confirmation up on
- 1:34:06that. Well boys, y'all got anything
- 1:34:08else tonight before we wrap it up?
- 1:34:10We better fucking win, I'm going to tell you that right now.
- 1:34:14Andretti going to lose his mind if we lose?
- 1:34:17Andretti will be in his feelings.
- 1:34:19I love Andretti because Andretti gets on the live stream feed and
- 1:34:23he he gets his points out there 30-40, fifty minutes before we
- 1:34:28even go on air. I love that.
- 1:34:30Andretti, be ready. He sets the tone, man.
- 1:34:33He's been, he's been holding this shit since Saturday.
- 1:34:35He's trying to get it out. Got to get it out.
- 1:34:38Got to get it out. He's like it's Tuesday.
- 1:34:40I'm, I'm, I'm putting it out there right now.
