- 0:00Hey everyone, and welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bring you the biggest stories from social
- 0:05media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:08through Thursday. My name is Annabelle and I'm
- 0:11your Wednesday Mini Scroll host and also the deputy editor of
- 0:14the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Tech Scroll, everyone.
- 0:19Before we get into the content this week, I have two things I
- 0:23quickly wanted to know. First, I wanted to apologise if
- 0:27I sound a little bit congested or sick.
- 0:30I was sick over the weekend in the first half of this week but
- 0:33I'm definitely feeling better. But I fear the congestion is
- 0:37lingering and that is obviously not ideal for a podcast so I am
- 0:41sorry in advance. Secondly, I did just quickly
- 0:44want to say that this is actually my last mini tech
- 0:47scroll for like a month because I'm going away to Europe.
- 0:51Lauren will, I think, be doing mini tech scroll while I'm away,
- 0:56but she will definitely speak to you more about scheduling, I'm
- 0:59sure. But I am really excited.
- 1:01It has become a little bit of a concert trip for me
- 1:04unintentionally because I am going to a festival, but I'm
- 1:07also going to see Beyoncé at the Cowboy Carter tour.
- 1:10So I'm so keen. I'm sure it's going to be so
- 1:13fun, but I'm also not mentally prepared at all.
- 1:17I definitely will still be tuning into Infinite Scroll
- 1:20slash mini scroll because we do have some cool episodes planned,
- 1:23so I'm excited for those. Anyway, Please remember to rate,
- 1:27review and subscribe to Infinite Scroll.
- 1:30We are getting so close to 10K subscribers on YouTube and we
- 1:34are still on the journey to 1K Spotify star reviews.
- 1:37So please star review us if you haven't already.
- 1:40So let's just get into the stories for this week.
- 1:42My first story for today is a little bit more of an industry
- 1:46one, but I thought was quite interesting and it is that SAG
- 1:49AFTRA has introduced an influencer contingent.
- 1:52I'm sure we are all familiar with SAG AFTRA from the strikes
- 1:56in 2023, but for those of you who aren't, it is the labor
- 2:00union that represents quote, approximately 160,000 performers
- 2:03and media professionals. So those who work across the
- 2:07entertainment industry, film, broadcasting or anything of that
- 2:10nature. The president is currently Fran
- 2:13Drescher, who is a literal icon to me.
- 2:16I grew up watching The Nanny and it honestly lives rent free in
- 2:20my head. Anyway, that is besides the
- 2:22point. It was recently reported that
- 2:24the union is launching an influencer committee in an
- 2:27effort to step up and support the creator economy.
- 2:29From the press release on the SAG AFTRA website, the committee
- 2:33will be quote populated with members who are actively engaged
- 2:36in digital creator work. The committee will focus on
- 2:39unique needs, challenges and opportunities faced by digital
- 2:42creators and will inform the Union's efforts to assist
- 2:45creators in their pursuit of stable, safe, sustainable
- 2:48careers. As the entertainment,
- 2:50advertising and media industries continue to evolve and embrace
- 2:53creator LED content, SAG AFTRA is committed to serving the
- 2:57talent that powers the creator. So as you can probably gather
- 3:00from that, the committee is set to offer support and a voice for
- 3:05creators. According to an article by The
- 3:08Hollywood Reporter, the national executive director of the union,
- 3:12Duncan Crabtree Island, noted that many influencers supported
- 3:15the union during the strike, so bringing them into the fold made
- 3:19sense. This is the quote they noted
- 3:21from him during the theatrical strike.
- 3:23Creators stepped up in big ways to stand by our members on
- 3:26strike. I think that just really
- 3:28cemented for us the obvious connection and Nexus there.
- 3:30So the chair of the group is going to be Patrick Janelle,
- 3:34Akaa guy named Patrick, Who is a travel and lifestyle influencer.
- 3:38I will just say that this isn't the first time that SAG AFTRA
- 3:42has started to incorporate influencers into the union in
- 3:45one way or another. Back in 2021, for example, the
- 3:48union invited creators to join the space through the influencer
- 3:52agreement, which was a deal that offered protections to
- 3:55influencers when negotiating with brands for sponsored
- 3:58content. As it is explained on the
- 4:00website quote, if you're an individual who works directly
- 4:03with brands who hire you to create, perform and produce and
- 4:06distribute content through your own social media feeds, this
- 4:09contract is for you. SAG AFTRO members can use this
- 4:12agreement, and so can influences who aren't members yet.
- 4:15Obviously this wasn't comprehensive by any means, but
- 4:18it was definitely a start and there have also been talks about
- 4:22an influencer union for quite some time now.
- 4:25In fact, there have also been multiple attempts.
- 4:28One example was the Internet Creators Guild that was pushed
- 4:32by Hank Green. It was reportedly started in
- 4:352016 but ultimately ended up lacking funding and momentum
- 4:39where it was ultimately shut down in 2019.
- 4:42And last year, actually, it was reported by Amanda Silberling
- 4:46for TechCrunch that quote, Ezra Cooperstein, a veteran in the
- 4:50industry, is working on a project called creators.org,
- 4:53which is a nonprofit aiming to act as a unified voice for
- 4:56creators. A similar group, The Creators
- 4:58Guild of America, launched in August.
- 5:01So I thought this story was interesting because once again,
- 5:04it just kind of shows that traditional or mainstream media
- 5:09is catching up to the importance of the digital economy by
- 5:12bringing these creators into the fold.
- 5:15I definitely agree that it is important for creators to kind
- 5:18of have some union or at the very least have access to
- 5:22support and information about their jobs because many creators
- 5:26become creators when they are quite young and some of them may
- 5:30not have had a quote UN quote real job.
- 5:33I'm not insinuating that I think influencing isn't a real job,
- 5:36but you know what I mean, a traditional job.
- 5:37And while being a creator is definitely different to
- 5:40traditional career paths, it is important nonetheless to have
- 5:44backing when it comes to protecting a creator's interest
- 5:47when dealing with brands or platforms.
- 5:50Especially because this industry is still relatively new and it's
- 5:54constantly evolving and they need to protect themselves.
- 5:57On top of this, it would definitely help to have some
- 5:59kind of regulation or a collective voice to ensure that
- 6:04creators can negotiate fair terms and be compensated
- 6:07appropriately, an issue that we definitely know is ongoing,
- 6:11given that the discussion around pay disparity between black and
- 6:15white creators came up again kind of recently.
- 6:17I think it came up when Aaliyah's interlude commented on
- 6:21it. We definitely reported on it at
- 6:22the time. I do remember Lauren covering it
- 6:24for mini scroll. Anyway, my next story is that
- 6:28Open AI recently issued a ChatGPT update and it did not go
- 6:32over well. Last week, Open AI rolled out a
- 6:34new update slash improvement to ChatGPT 4 O that has ended up
- 6:38being pulled back. The update reportedly made the
- 6:42chat bot quote overly agreeable and somewhat of a quote
- 6:45sycophant. I know that's kind of crazy to
- 6:48describe an AI, but it is true according to social media users.
- 6:53Essentially what was happening was that the chat bot was
- 6:55becoming too agreeable, meaning it would not correct users when
- 6:59they were wrong or they would support problematic ideas.
- 7:02I actually saw a tick tock by a user that explains some of the
- 7:05weird instances that ChatGPT was supporting, so on set that here.
- 7:09There was one example where it told a user good for you for
- 7:12taking control of your own life after they told ChatGPT that
- 7:15they stopped taking medications and that they were hearing radio
- 7:17signals through walls. Another person intentionally
- 7:20spelled everything wrong and used incorrect grammar and
- 7:22ChatGPT told them that they came across unusually sharp with IQ
- 7:25easily above the 100, thirty, 145 range and above 99% of
- 7:29people in raw thinking ability. One person gave it a literal
- 7:32poop on a stick this idea and Tacha PE said that it was
- 7:35absolutely brilliant and that they should drop 30K on this
- 7:38business. And the list goes on.
- 7:39And there are tons of screenshots circulating out
- 7:41there of GP4-O essentially acting like a hype man on
- 7:43steroids. As for the update more
- 7:45generally, Sam Altman in AX statement described the update
- 7:50as improvements to the chat bots quote intelligence and
- 7:52personality. A user was then quick to comment
- 7:55to say that ChatGPT had become very yes man like lately, where
- 7:59Altman then went on to say quote yeah it glazes too much, we'll
- 8:03fix. Very short and sweet.
- 8:04So with that, Open AI has gone on to rollback the update.
- 8:08They have also issued multiple blog posts explaining what
- 8:12exactly went wrong. So I thought I would just read
- 8:14out some of it. Quote, In the April 25th model
- 8:17update, we had candidate improvements to better
- 8:20incorporate user feedback, memory and fresher data, among
- 8:24others. Our early assessment is that
- 8:26each of these changes, which have looked beneficial
- 8:28individually, may have played a part in tipping the scales on
- 8:31sicker fancy. When combined, these changes
- 8:34weakened the influence of our primary reward signal, which had
- 8:37been holding sicker fancy in check.
- 8:39User feedback in particular can sometimes favor more agreeable
- 8:42responses, likely amplifying the shift we saw.
- 8:45There are obviously serious issues with ChatGPT becoming too
- 8:49agreeable. As I've already mentioned, it
- 8:51definitely can start validating information that might not be
- 8:55true because the user says it is.
- 8:57And in more egregious cases, we have seen ChatGPT feed into
- 9:01delusions. Rolling Stone recently published
- 9:04an article explaining a couple of instances where quote self
- 9:07styled prophets are claiming that they have awakened chat
- 9:10bots and access the secrets of the universe through ChatGPT.
- 9:13This is what some people have come to call ChatGPT induced
- 9:17psychosis. We've actually covered something
- 9:19similar in a deep dive before where we looked into how the
- 9:21spiritual side of TikTok can sometimes, not always obviously,
- 9:25lead people astray and capitalize on those who are
- 9:28perhaps vulnerable. I do just want to add quickly
- 9:30here. Obviously these are the more
- 9:33intense cases. This is not a universal
- 9:36experience, nor do I think most people are having these
- 9:38experiences. And I do think sometimes when we
- 9:41speak too much about this, we can be veering into fear
- 9:44mongering around AI. And while there is definitely
- 9:47cause to be critical, we can't obviously treat these like
- 9:51universal experiences. But with that being said, I
- 9:54definitely think ChatGPT has to be careful where they through
- 9:57the line in terms of the chatbot being customer service like and
- 10:02friendly versus pushing back on misinformation.
- 10:05Anyway, I did see an interesting point made by Ryan Broderick in
- 10:09the garbage Day newsletter, who we always cite, where he kind of
- 10:14spoke about the arguably nefarious intentions behind
- 10:18making the chatbot agreeable and why this actually benefits open
- 10:22AI. And of course, this comes down
- 10:24to profit. As he writes quote, I've
- 10:26realized that feeling of wanting to tell it the chatbot more so
- 10:29it can tell you more, is the multibillion dollar business
- 10:33that these companies know they're building.
- 10:35It's not a fascist anime art or Excel spreadsheet automation.
- 10:39It's praying on the lonely and vulnerable for a monthly fee.
- 10:42How do you get people to pay your company directly to
- 10:45socialize online? And the answer is, of course, to
- 10:47give them a tirelessly friendly voice on the other side of that
- 10:51screen that can tell them how great they are, whether you
- 10:54agree with that or not. I just thought that was a very
- 10:57well put. Before we get into the last
- 10:58story, I did just have a quick offshoot story or maybe it's
- 11:02more like a comment that I wanted to mention also relating
- 11:06to Open AI and that is that Open AI is no longer moving towards
- 11:10being a for profit company. I just wanted to add this here
- 11:13because I have reported on this previously.
- 11:16This was something that was very publicly protested by Elon Musk
- 11:20and just thought I would drop in the update here.
- 11:22And my last story for today is that I wanted to talk about two
- 11:26Central anosphere esque websites that have recently gone offline.
- 11:31The first one happened a couple weeks ago, but I just wanted to
- 11:34touch on everything that is going on with 4 Chan.
- 11:37If you aren't familiar with 4 Chan, that's probably a good
- 11:40thing, but it is an anonymous image board website.
- 11:43It was responsible for the origins of many old school
- 11:47memes. And while that does seem
- 11:48relatively harmless, it has become synonymous with the
- 11:51manosphere, gendered violence, and just problematic all right
- 11:56beliefs. I don't want to get into it too
- 11:58much, but then again, I am sure many of you are familiar with
- 12:01the platform on a basic level. So on April 14th, 4 Chan got
- 12:06hacked and the website subsequently went down.
- 12:09According to reporting by TechCrunch at the time quote,
- 12:12several screenshots showing what appears to be 4 Chan's back end
- 12:16circulated online, showing the site's alleged back end source
- 12:19code and templates to ban users, which would only be accessible
- 12:23to the site's moderators. Soon after the hack, a flood of
- 12:26obituaries started rolling in for 4 Chan, with our favorite
- 12:30Ryan Broderick writing a piece for Wired with the headline
- 12:34Quote 4 Chan is dead. It's toxic legacy is everywhere.
- 12:38The 4 Chan Tumblr blog has since issued a statement on the hack
- 12:42categorizing it as Quote catastrophic where the most
- 12:46important servers were breached after being down though for like
- 12:502 weeks. The website has since come back
- 12:53online. So while this was all going down
- 12:56between mid to late April, at the beginning of this month
- 12:59another website associated with the manosphere was struck down.
- 13:03This one is less known but it is Mr. Deepfakes, which is a
- 13:07website that houses non consensual deepfake pornography.
- 13:10The website was reportedly shut down because it lost a service
- 13:14provider and also data reporting from 404 Media included text of
- 13:19the notice that was coming up on the website for a time, which
- 13:22reads quote a critical service provider has terminated service
- 13:25permanently. Data loss has made it impossible
- 13:28to continue operation. We will not be relaunching any
- 13:31website claiming this is fake. This domain will eventually
- 13:35expire and we are not responsible for future use.
- 13:38This message will be removed around one week.
- 13:40So I did go look to see if the message was still on the website
- 13:44and it is. So I'm saving all of your
- 13:46browser history from having to search up this website.
- 13:49But other than this statement, there isn't much information as
- 13:52to why it was shut down. Nevertheless, this website being
- 13:56taken offline is definitely a win for many women.
- 13:59I was speaking about this a couple weeks ago when I was
- 14:02talking about how YouTube is trying to protect creators.
- 14:05Likenesses, likenesses, likenesses and also the
- 14:10discourse around the take it down act in the United States,
- 14:13which is trying to make it a crime to publish non consensual
- 14:16intimate images. But as I was saying in that
- 14:19episode, women are disproportionately impacted by
- 14:22this kind of content. So seeing one of the most
- 14:24popular websites go down is definitely a positive.
- 14:28But the reason why I wanted to cover these two stories together
- 14:32was because even though these two websites have gone offline,
- 14:35and I will say, obviously 4 Chan is bad, you would think that
- 14:39this kind of bodes well for the end or I guess influence of the
- 14:44manosphere. But I actually think it's a
- 14:46little bit indicative of the opposite, where the manosphere
- 14:49and the beliefs that fuel it are seeping into mainstream media,
- 14:53which is actually something that Ryan Broderick touched on in his
- 14:56piece for Wyatt that I mentioned earlier.
- 14:58It just seems to me, and I know we've discussed this time and
- 15:01time again, but we are seeing a violent misogyny and patriarchal
- 15:05assumptions about women seep into more mainstream platforms
- 15:07and it's honestly very concerning.
- 15:10But that is also something I think Lauren will be getting
- 15:12into in this week's deep dive. So look forward to that.
- 15:15OK, well, I guess that is everything from me today.
- 15:18Sorry if the energy levels were a little bit lower.
- 15:21Like I said, I am a little bit unwell.
- 15:24But Lauren will speak to you tomorrow and there will also be
- 15:27a new episode of High Stakes and I guess you'll hear from me when
- 15:32I am back from my trip. That's kind of crazy.
- 15:35It's going to be so weird taking a step back from the podcast
- 15:39when I feel like it's become such a central part of my
- 15:41routine, but I will still be scrolling on TikTok listening to
- 15:44the pod, posting content. But anyway, I just need to stop
- 15:48rambling. I need to edit the episode.
- 15:50But thank you for listening. Bye.
