- 0:00Speaker 1: Gilthalgening sections forty nine to fifty four of the prose
- 0:05Speaker 1: Eta by Snorri Sturlussen, translated by Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur eighteen
- 0:12Speaker 1: eighty eight to nineteen seventy one. This LibriVox recording is
- 0:16Speaker 1: in the public domain recording by expatriate in Bangor, Maine,
- 0:22Speaker 1: the beguiling of Guilfi section forty nine. Then spake Gunglari,
- 0:28Speaker 1: have any more matters of note befallen among the Esir?
- 0:32Speaker 1: A very great deed of valor did thorachieve on that journey?
- 0:36Speaker 1: Power made answer? Now shall be told of those tidings
- 0:40Speaker 1: which seemed of more consequence to the Esir. The beginning
- 0:44Speaker 1: of the story is this that Bolder the Good dreamed
- 0:47Speaker 1: great and perilous dreams touching his life. When he told
- 0:51Speaker 1: these dreams to the Esir, then they took council together,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and this was their decision to ask safety for Bolder
- 0:58Speaker 1: from all kinds of dangers. And frigg took oaths to
- 1:02Speaker 1: this purport. That fire and water should spare Boulder, likewise
- 1:06Speaker 1: iron and metal of all kinds, stones, earth, trees, sicknesses, beasts, birds, venoms, serpents.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And when that was done and made known. Then it
- 1:17Speaker 1: was a diversion of boulders, and the Esir that he
- 1:20Speaker 1: should stand up in the thing. Note the thing was
- 1:24Speaker 1: the Legislative Assembly of Iceland, less specifically a formal assembly
- 1:30Speaker 1: held for judicial purposes or to settle questions of moment,
- 1:34Speaker 1: an assembly of men, and note and all the others.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Should some shoot at him, some hue at him, some
- 1:42Speaker 1: beat him with stones, but whatsoever was done hurt him
- 1:46Speaker 1: not at all, And that seemed to them all a
- 1:49Speaker 1: very worshipful thing. But when Loki Lofierson saw this, it
- 1:54Speaker 1: pleased him ill that Balder took no hurt. He went
- 1:57Speaker 1: to Fensler, to Phrigg, and made aid himself into the
- 2:01Speaker 1: likeness of a woman. Then Frig asked if that woman
- 2:04Speaker 1: knew what the easier did at the thing. She said
- 2:07Speaker 1: that all were shooting at Bolder, and moreover that he
- 2:10Speaker 1: took no hurt. Then said Frig, neither weapons nor trees
- 2:14Speaker 1: may hurt Bolder. I have taken oaths of them all.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Then the woman asked of all things taken oath to
- 2:20Speaker 1: spare Bolder, and Frig answered, there grows a tree sprout
- 2:24Speaker 1: alone westward of Valhalla. It is called mistletoe. I thought
- 2:29Speaker 1: it too young to ask the oath of then straightway
- 2:32Speaker 1: the woman turned away, But Loki took mistletoe and pulled
- 2:36Speaker 1: it up and went to the thing. Hood stood outside
- 2:39Speaker 1: the ring of men because he was blind. Then spake
- 2:42Speaker 1: Loki to him, Why dost thou not shoot at Bolder?
- 2:46Speaker 1: He answered, because I see not where Bolder is, and
- 2:50Speaker 1: for this also that I am weaponless. Then said Loki,
- 2:54Speaker 1: do thou also after the manner of other men, and
- 2:57Speaker 1: show Bolder honor as the other men do. I will
- 3:00Speaker 1: direct thee where he stands shoot at him with this
- 3:03Speaker 1: Wand Hooder took mistletoe and shot at Bolder, being guided
- 3:08Speaker 1: by Loki. The shaft flew through Bolder, and he fell
- 3:11Speaker 1: dead to the earth. And that was the greatest mischance
- 3:14Speaker 1: that has ever befallen among gods and men. Then, when
- 3:18Speaker 1: Bolder was fallen, words failed all the esir and their
- 3:22Speaker 1: hands likewise to lay hold of him. Each looked at
- 3:25Speaker 1: the other, and all were of one mind as to
- 3:28Speaker 1: him who had wrought the work. But none might take vengeance.
- 3:32Speaker 1: So great a sanctuary was in that place. But when
- 3:35Speaker 1: the esir tried to speak, then it befell first, that
- 3:39Speaker 1: weeping broke out, so that none might speak to the
- 3:42Speaker 1: others with words concerning his grief. But Odin bore that
- 3:46Speaker 1: misfortune by so much the worst, as he had most
- 3:49Speaker 1: perception of how great harm and loss for the Esir
- 3:52Speaker 1: were in the death of Bolder. Now, when the gods
- 3:56Speaker 1: had come to themselves, frig spake and asked who their
- 4:00Speaker 1: there might be among the Esir, who would fain have
- 4:03Speaker 1: for his own all her love and favor. Let him
- 4:06Speaker 1: ride the road to Hell and seek if he may
- 4:08Speaker 1: find Bolder, and offer Hell a ransom. If she will,
- 4:12Speaker 1: let Balder come home to Asgard. And he is named Hermodor,
- 4:16Speaker 1: the Bold Odin's son who undertook that embassy. Then Sleipner
- 4:21Speaker 1: was taken Odin's steed and led forward, and Hermodor mounted
- 4:26Speaker 1: on that horse and galloped off. The Esir took the
- 4:29Speaker 1: body of Boulder and brought it to the sea. Heringhrny
- 4:33Speaker 1: is the name of Balder's ship. It was greatest of
- 4:36Speaker 1: all ships. The gods would have launched it and made
- 4:39Speaker 1: Balder's pyre thereon, but the ship stirred not forward. Then
- 4:43Speaker 1: word was sent to Utenheim. After that giantess who is
- 4:47Speaker 1: called Hirokin, when she had come, riding a wolf and
- 4:50Speaker 1: having a viper for bridle. Then she leaped off the steed,
- 4:54Speaker 1: and Odin called to four berserks to tend the steed,
- 4:58Speaker 1: but they were not able to hold it until they
- 5:00Speaker 1: had felled it. Then Hierokin went to the prow of
- 5:03Speaker 1: the boat and thrust it out at the first push,
- 5:06Speaker 1: so that fire burst from the rollers, and all lands trembled.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Thor became angry and clutched his hammer, and would straightway
- 5:13Speaker 1: have broken her head, had not the gods prayed for
- 5:16Speaker 1: peace for her. Then was the body of Balder borne
- 5:19Speaker 1: out on shipboard, And when his wife, Nanna, the daughter
- 5:23Speaker 1: of nep saw that straightway, her heart burst with grief,
- 5:27Speaker 1: and she died. She was borne to the pyre and
- 5:30Speaker 1: fire was kindled. Then Thor stood by and hallowed the
- 5:35Speaker 1: pyre with Muelnir, And before his feet ran a certain
- 5:38Speaker 1: dwarf which was named Lita. Thor kicked at him with
- 5:42Speaker 1: his foot and thrust him into the fire, and he burned.
- 5:45Speaker 1: People of many races visited this burning. First it to
- 5:48Speaker 1: be told of Odin, how frig and the Valkyrie went
- 5:52Speaker 1: with him and his ravens. But Frere drove in his
- 5:55Speaker 1: chariot with a boar called gold Mane or fearful tusk,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and Himendaler rode the horse called gold Top, and Freya
- 6:04Speaker 1: drove her cats. Thither came also much people of the
- 6:07Speaker 1: rhyme giants and the hill giants. Odin laid on the
- 6:10Speaker 1: pyre that gold ring, which is called drope near this
- 6:14Speaker 1: quality attended it that every ninth night there dropped from
- 6:17Speaker 1: it eight gold rings of equal weight. Boulder's horse was
- 6:21Speaker 1: led to the bail fire with all his trappings. Now
- 6:25Speaker 1: this is to be told concerning Hermoder, that he rode
- 6:29Speaker 1: nine knights through dark dales and deep so that he
- 6:32Speaker 1: saw not before he was come to the river Gule,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and rode onto the Gule bridge, which bridge is thatched
- 6:38Speaker 1: with glittering gold. Mode Gooder is the maiden called who
- 6:43Speaker 1: guards the bridge. She asked him his name and race,
- 6:47Speaker 1: saying that the day before there had ridden over the
- 6:49Speaker 1: bridge five companies of dead men. But the bridge thunders
- 6:53Speaker 1: no less under thee alone, and thou hast not the
- 6:56Speaker 1: color of dead men. Why rightest thou hither on Hell?
- 7:01Speaker 1: He answered, I am appointed to ride to Hell to
- 7:03Speaker 1: seek out balder Hast thou perchance seen Balder on Hellway.
- 7:08Speaker 1: She said that Balder had ridden there over Guil's Bridge,
- 7:12Speaker 1: but down and north lieth Hellway. Then her modor rode
- 7:16Speaker 1: on till he came to hell Gate. He dismounted from
- 7:19Speaker 1: his steed and made his girths fast mounted, and pricked
- 7:22Speaker 1: him with his spurs, and the steed leaped so hard
- 7:26Speaker 1: over the gate that he came no wise near to it.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Then her modor rode home to the hall, and dismounted
- 7:33Speaker 1: from his steed, went into the hall, and saw sitting
- 7:36Speaker 1: there in the high seat Bolder, his brother, and her
- 7:40Speaker 1: modr tarried there over night. At morn, her modor prayed
- 7:44Speaker 1: Hell that Balder might ride home with him, and told
- 7:48Speaker 1: her how great weeping was among the east here. But
- 7:51Speaker 1: Hell said that in this wise it should be put
- 7:53Speaker 1: to the test whether Balder were so all beloved as
- 7:56Speaker 1: had been said. If all things in the world quick
- 8:00Speaker 1: and dead weep for him, then he shall go back
- 8:03Speaker 1: to the Esir. But he shall remain with Hell if
- 8:06Speaker 1: any gain say it, or will not weep. Then hermodor
- 8:10Speaker 1: arose the Bolder, led him out of the hall, and
- 8:14Speaker 1: took the ring, droped near and sent it to Odin
- 8:16Speaker 1: for a remembrance, and Nanna sent Frig a linen smock,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and yet more gifts, and to Fulla a golden finger ring.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Then hermodor rode his way back and came into Asgard
- 8:29Speaker 1: and told all those tidings which he had seen and heard. Thereupon,
- 8:33Speaker 1: the Esir sent over all the world messengers to pray
- 8:37Speaker 1: that Balder be wept out of hell. And all men
- 8:40Speaker 1: did this, and quick things, and the earth, and stones,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and trees and all metals, even as thou must have
- 8:46Speaker 1: seen that these things weep when they come out of
- 8:49Speaker 1: frost and into the heat. Then when the messengers went home,
- 8:53Speaker 1: having well wrought their errand they found in a certain
- 8:56Speaker 1: cave where a giantess sat. She called herself Thick. They
- 9:01Speaker 1: prayed her to weep Boulder out of hell. She answered,
- 9:05Speaker 1: thik will weep waterless tears, for Bolder's baialefare living or dead.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I loved not the Churl's son. Let hell hold to
- 9:13Speaker 1: that she hath. And men deemed that she who was
- 9:16Speaker 1: there was Loki Laufiarsen, who hath wrought most ill among
- 9:21Speaker 1: the Esir. Fifty Then said Ganglari, exceeding much Loki had
- 9:28Speaker 1: brought to pass when he had first been caused that
- 9:30Speaker 1: Boulder was slain, and then that he was not redeemed
- 9:34Speaker 1: out of hell? Was any vengeance taken on him for this?
- 9:38Speaker 1: Hoor answered, this thing was repaid him in such wise
- 9:41Speaker 1: that he shall remember it long. When the gods had
- 9:44Speaker 1: become as wroth with him as was to be looked for,
- 9:47Speaker 1: he ran off and hid himself in a certain mountain.
- 9:51Speaker 1: There he made a house with four doors, so that
- 9:53Speaker 1: he could see out of the house in all directions.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Often throughout the day he turned himself into the liken
- 10:00Speaker 1: of a salmon and hid himself in the place called
- 10:03Speaker 1: fraananger foals. Then he would ponder what manner of while
- 10:07Speaker 1: the gods would devise to take him in the waterfall.
- 10:11Speaker 1: But when he sat in the house, he took twine
- 10:13Speaker 1: of linen and knitted meshes as a net is made,
- 10:17Speaker 1: since but a fire burned before him. Then he saw
- 10:21Speaker 1: that the esir were close upon him, and Odin had
- 10:24Speaker 1: seen from Vlidskialf where he was. He leaped up at
- 10:27Speaker 1: once and out into the river, but cast the net
- 10:30Speaker 1: into the fire. When the esir had come to the house,
- 10:34Speaker 1: he went in first, who was wisest of all, who
- 10:37Speaker 1: was called Kavassir. And when he saw in the fire
- 10:40Speaker 1: the white ash where the net had burned, then he
- 10:42Speaker 1: perceived that that thing must be a device for catching fish,
- 10:45Speaker 1: and told it to the Esir. Straightway, they took hold
- 10:49Speaker 1: and made themselves a net after the pattern of the
- 10:51Speaker 1: one which they perceived by the burnt out ashes that
- 10:54Speaker 1: Loki had made. When the net was ready, then the
- 10:57Speaker 1: Esir went to the river and cast the net into
- 10:59Speaker 1: the fall. Thor held one end of the net, and
- 11:03Speaker 1: all of the eesier held the other, and they drew
- 11:05Speaker 1: the net. But Loki darted ahead and lay down between
- 11:08Speaker 1: two stones. They drew the net over him, and perceived
- 11:12Speaker 1: that something living was in front of it. A second time,
- 11:16Speaker 1: they went up to the fall and cast out the net,
- 11:18Speaker 1: having bound it to something so heavy that nothing should
- 11:21Speaker 1: be able to pass under it. Then Loki swam ahead
- 11:25Speaker 1: of the net, but when he saw that it was
- 11:27Speaker 1: but a short distance to the sea, then he jumped
- 11:29Speaker 1: up over the net rope and ran into the fall.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Now the Esir saw where he went, and went up
- 11:35Speaker 1: again to the fall and divided the company into two parts.
- 11:38Speaker 1: But Thor waded along in mid stream, and so they
- 11:41Speaker 1: went out toward the sea. Now Loki saw a choice
- 11:45Speaker 1: of two courses. It was a mortal peril to dash
- 11:48Speaker 1: out into the sea, but this was the second, to
- 11:51Speaker 1: leap over the net again, And so he did. He
- 11:55Speaker 1: leaped as swiftly as he could over the net cord.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Thor clutched at him and got hold of him, and
- 12:01Speaker 1: he slipped in Thor's hand, so that the hand stopped
- 12:04Speaker 1: at the tail. And for this reason the salmon has
- 12:08Speaker 1: a tapering back. Now Loki was taken truceless, and was
- 12:12Speaker 1: brought with them into a certain cave. Thereupon they took
- 12:16Speaker 1: three flat stones and set them on edge, and drilled
- 12:19Speaker 1: a hole in each stone. Then were taken Loki's sons,
- 12:23Speaker 1: Vali and Nari or Narfi. The esier changed Volley into
- 12:27Speaker 1: the form of a wolf, and he tore asunder Narfi,
- 12:30Speaker 1: his brother, and the aesir took his entrails and bound
- 12:35Speaker 1: Loki with them over the three stones. One stands under
- 12:38Speaker 1: his shoulders, the second under his loins, the third under
- 12:42Speaker 1: his huffs, and those bonds were turned to iron. Then
- 12:46Speaker 1: Scotti took a venomous serpent and fastened it up over him,
- 12:50Speaker 1: so that the venom should drip from the serpent into
- 12:52Speaker 1: his face. But Segin, his wife, stands near him and
- 12:57Speaker 1: holds a basin under the venom drops. And when the
- 13:00Speaker 1: basin is full, she goes and pours out the venom.
- 13:03Speaker 1: But in the meantime the venom drips into his face.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Then he writhes against it with such force that all
- 13:09Speaker 1: the earth trembles. Ye call that earthquakes. There he lies
- 13:13Speaker 1: in bonds till the Weird of the gods. Fifty one,
- 13:18Speaker 1: Then said Ganglari, what tidings are to be told concerning
- 13:22Speaker 1: the Weird of the gods? Never before have I heard
- 13:25Speaker 1: aught said of this? Harr answered, Great tidings are to
- 13:29Speaker 1: be told of it, and much. The first is this,
- 13:32Speaker 1: that there shall come that winter which is called the
- 13:34Speaker 1: awful winter. In that time snow shall drive from all quarters.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Frost shall be great then, and winds sharp. There shall
- 13:42Speaker 1: be no virtue in the sun. Those winters shall proceed
- 13:46Speaker 1: three in succession, and no summer between. But first shall
- 13:51Speaker 1: come three other winters, such that over all the world
- 13:54Speaker 1: there shall be mighty battles. In that time, brothers shall
- 13:58Speaker 1: slay each other for greed's sake, and none shall spare
- 14:01Speaker 1: father or son in manslaughter and in incest. So it
- 14:06Speaker 1: says in voluspa, brothers shall strive and slaughter each other
- 14:10Speaker 1: own sisters, children shall sind together ill days among men
- 14:15Speaker 1: many o whoredom and axe age, a sword age, shields
- 14:19Speaker 1: shall be cloven, a wind age, a wolf age. Ere
- 14:23Speaker 1: the world totters. Then shall happen what seems great tidings.
- 14:28Speaker 1: The wolf shall swallow the sun, and this shall seem
- 14:31Speaker 1: to men a great harm. Then the other wolf shall
- 14:34Speaker 1: seize the moon, and he also shall work great ruin.
- 14:37Speaker 1: The stars shall vanish from the heavens. Then shall come
- 14:41Speaker 1: to pass these tidings. Also all the earth shall tremble,
- 14:44Speaker 1: so and the crags the tree shall be torn up
- 14:48Speaker 1: from the earth, and the crags fall to ruin, and
- 14:50Speaker 1: all fetters and bonds shall be broken in rent. Then
- 14:54Speaker 1: shall fendrous wolf get loose. Then the sea shall gush
- 14:57Speaker 1: forth upon the land. Because the midguard serpent stirs in
- 15:01Speaker 1: giant wrath and advances up onto the land. Then that
- 15:06Speaker 1: too shall happen, That Naglphar shall be loosened. The ship
- 15:10Speaker 1: which is so named it is made of dead men's nails.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Wherefore a warning is desirable that if a man die
- 15:17Speaker 1: with unshorn nails, that man adds much material to the
- 15:21Speaker 1: ship Naglphar, which gods and men were fain to have
- 15:24Speaker 1: finished late. Yet in this sea flood Naglfar shall float.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Primere is the name of the giant who steers Naglfar.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Fenrous Wolf shall advance with gaping mouth, and his lower
- 15:37Speaker 1: jaw shall be against the earth, but the upper against heaven.
- 15:41Speaker 1: He would gape yet more if there were room for it.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Fires blazed from his eyes and nostrils. The Midguard's serpent
- 15:48Speaker 1: shall blow venom, so that he shall sprinkle all the
- 15:51Speaker 1: air and water. And he is very terrible, and shall
- 15:55Speaker 1: be on one side of the wolf. In this din
- 15:58Speaker 1: shall the heaven be cloven, and the sons of Muspel ride.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Thence sirtr shall ride first, and both before him and
- 16:06Speaker 1: after him, burning fire. His sword is exceeding good from
- 16:10Speaker 1: it radiance shines brighter than from the sun. When they
- 16:14Speaker 1: ride over Beefrust, then the bridge shall break, As has
- 16:17Speaker 1: been told before, the sons of Muspel shall go forth
- 16:21Speaker 1: to that field which is called Vigrider. Thither shall come
- 16:25Speaker 1: Fenris Wolf. Also in the mid Guard serpent. Then Loki
- 16:29Speaker 1: and Hrymir shall come there also, and with him all
- 16:32Speaker 1: the rhyme giants. All the champions of Hell follow Loki,
- 16:36Speaker 1: and the sons of Muspel shall have a company by themselves,
- 16:40Speaker 1: and it shall be very bright. The field Vigrider is
- 16:44Speaker 1: a hundred leagues wide each way. When these tidings come
- 16:48Speaker 1: to pass, then shall him Dallar rise up and blow
- 16:52Speaker 1: mightily in the galler horn and awaken all the gods,
- 16:56Speaker 1: and they shall hold council together. Then Odin shall ride
- 17:00Speaker 1: to Mimir's well and take counsel of Mimir for himself
- 17:03Speaker 1: and his host. Then the ash of Igdrasil shall tremble,
- 17:07Speaker 1: and nothing then shall be without fear in heaven or
- 17:10Speaker 1: in earth. Then shall the Eesir put on their war weeds,
- 17:13Speaker 1: and all the champions, and advance to the field. Odin
- 17:17Speaker 1: rides first with a gold helmet and a fair burni
- 17:21Speaker 1: and his spirit, which is called Gungnir. He shall go
- 17:24Speaker 1: forth against Fenris Wolf, and Thor stands forward on his
- 17:28Speaker 1: other side, and can be of no avail to him,
- 17:31Speaker 1: because he shall have his hands full to fight against
- 17:34Speaker 1: the mid Guard's serpent. Frere shall contend with Sirterter, and
- 17:38Speaker 1: a hard encounter shall there be between them before Frere falls.
- 17:43Speaker 1: It is to be his death that he lacks that
- 17:45Speaker 1: good sword of his which he gave to Skirner. Then
- 17:49Speaker 1: shall the dog Garmer be loosed, which is bound before
- 17:52Speaker 1: Guinepa's cave. He is the greatest monster. He shall do
- 17:56Speaker 1: battle with Tyr, and each become the other's slayer. Thor
- 18:00Speaker 1: shall put to death the mid Guard's serpent, and shall
- 18:03Speaker 1: stride away nine paces from that spot. Then shall he
- 18:07Speaker 1: fall dead to the earth because of the venom which
- 18:11Speaker 1: the snake has blown at him. The wolf shall swallow
- 18:14Speaker 1: odin that shall be his ending. But straight thereafter shall
- 18:19Speaker 1: Vedar stride forth and set one foot upon the lower
- 18:23Speaker 1: jaw of the wolf. On that foot he has the
- 18:26Speaker 1: shoe materials for which have been gathering throughout all time.
- 18:30Speaker 1: There are the scraps of leather which men cut out
- 18:33Speaker 1: of their shoes at toe or heel. Therefore, he who
- 18:36Speaker 1: desires in his heart to come to the Eser's help
- 18:39Speaker 1: should cast those scraps away. With one hand, he shall
- 18:43Speaker 1: seize the wolf's upper jaw and tear his gullet asunder.
- 18:47Speaker 1: And that is the death of the Wolf Loki shall
- 18:50Speaker 1: have batter wiled hind Dollar, and each shall be the
- 18:53Speaker 1: slayer of the other. Then straightway shall Searcher cast fire
- 18:57Speaker 1: over the earth and burn all the world, So is
- 19:00Speaker 1: said in Voluspa high blows him Dollar. The horn is
- 19:04Speaker 1: aloft odin communes, with Memir's head trembles Igdrasail's towering ash,
- 19:11Speaker 1: the old tree whales. When the ettene is loosed? What
- 19:15Speaker 1: of the esir? What of the elf folk? All utunheim echoes,
- 19:19Speaker 1: The esir are at kensal, The dwarfs are groaning before
- 19:23Speaker 1: their stone doors, wise in rock walls white yet or
- 19:28Speaker 1: what premier sails from the east The sea floods onward.
- 19:33Speaker 1: The monstrous beast twists in mighty wrath. The snake beats
- 19:37Speaker 1: the waves. The eagle is screaming. The gold neb tears
- 19:41Speaker 1: corpses Naglfar is loosed from the east sails the keel
- 19:46Speaker 1: come now Muspel's folk over the sea waves, and Loki stereth.
- 19:50Speaker 1: There are the warlocks all with the wolf. With them
- 19:53Speaker 1: is the brother of Beleicester faring Searter fares from southward,
- 19:58Speaker 1: with switch eating flame on his sword shimmers the sun
- 20:02Speaker 1: of the war gods. The rocks are falling, and fiends
- 20:06Speaker 1: are reeling. Heroes tread hellway. Heaven is cloven. Then to
- 20:11Speaker 1: the goddess, a second grief cometh. When Odin fares to
- 20:14Speaker 1: fight with the wolf and bellies slayer the bright God
- 20:18Speaker 1: with Sirtter, there must fall frigs beloved. Odin's son goeth
- 20:23Speaker 1: to strife with the wolf, Vidar, speeding to meet the
- 20:26Speaker 1: slaughter beast. The sword in his hand to the heart,
- 20:30Speaker 1: he thrusteth of the fiend's offspring, Avenged is his father.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Now goeth Houdin's glorious sun not in flight from the serpent.
- 20:40Speaker 1: A fear, unheeding, all the Earth's offspring must empty the homesteads.
- 20:45Speaker 1: When Furiously smiteth Midguard's defender, the sun shall be darkened.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Earth sinks in the sea, glide from the heaven. The
- 20:53Speaker 1: glittering stars smoke. Wreek rages in reddening fire, the high
- 20:58Speaker 1: heat licks against Heaven itself. And here it says, yet
- 21:02Speaker 1: so the greedier height the field wherein fight shall meet
- 21:07Speaker 1: Sirter and the cherished gods. In hundred leagues it has
- 21:11Speaker 1: on each side. Unto them, that field is fated. Fifty two,
- 21:18Speaker 1: then said Gounglari. What shall come to pass afterward, when
- 21:22Speaker 1: all the world is burned and dead are all the
- 21:25Speaker 1: gods and all the champions in all mankind. Have he
- 21:29Speaker 1: not said before that every man shall live in some
- 21:32Speaker 1: world throughout all ages? Then three d answered, in that
- 21:36Speaker 1: time the good abode shall be many, and many the ill.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Then it shall be best to be in Gimle in heaven. Moreover,
- 21:44Speaker 1: there is plenteous abundance of good drink for them that
- 21:47Speaker 1: esteem that a pleasure. In the hall which is called Brimer,
- 21:51Speaker 1: it stands in Oculner. That too is a good hall
- 21:54Speaker 1: which stands in Nita Fells, made of red gold. Its
- 21:58Speaker 1: name is Sindri. In these holls shall dwell good men
- 22:02Speaker 1: and pure in heart. In Nostrand is a great hall
- 22:06Speaker 1: in evil, and its doors face to the north. It
- 22:10Speaker 1: is all woven of serpent backs, like a wattle house,
- 22:14Speaker 1: and all the snake heads turn into the house and
- 22:16Speaker 1: blow venom, so that along the hall run rivers of venom,
- 22:20Speaker 1: And they who have broken oaths and murderers wighe those rivers.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Even as it says, here I know a hall standing
- 22:28Speaker 1: far from the sun in Nostrand. The doors to northward
- 22:32Speaker 1: are turned venum drops fall down from the roof holes.
- 22:36Speaker 1: That hall is bordered with backs of serpents. There are
- 22:39Speaker 1: doomed to weigh the weltering streams men that are man sworn,
- 22:44Speaker 1: and they that murderers are. But it is worse than Hvergomere.
- 22:48Speaker 1: There the cursed snake tears dead men's Corpses fifty three.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Then spake Gunglari. Shall any of the gods live then,
- 22:58Speaker 1: or shall there be then any earth or heaven? Hor
- 23:02Speaker 1: answered in that time the earth shall emerge out of
- 23:05Speaker 1: the sea, and shall then be green and fair. Then
- 23:08Speaker 1: shall the fruits of it be brought forth unsown. Vidar
- 23:12Speaker 1: and Vali shall be living inasmuch as neither sea nor
- 23:15Speaker 1: the fire of Surtur shall have harmed them, and they
- 23:19Speaker 1: shall dwell at Ida plain where asgard was before. And
- 23:23Speaker 1: then the sons of thor Modi and Magni shall come there,
- 23:27Speaker 1: and they shall have mulenir. There After that bolder shall
- 23:31Speaker 1: come thither and hooder from Hell. Then all shall sit
- 23:35Speaker 1: down together and hold speech with one another, and call
- 23:39Speaker 1: to mind their secret wisdom, and speak of those happenings
- 23:42Speaker 1: which have been before. Of the Midguard, Serpent and of
- 23:45Speaker 1: Fenris Wolf. Then they shall find in the grass those
- 23:48Speaker 1: golden chest pieces which the Esir had had. Thus is
- 23:53Speaker 1: it said in the Deity Shrine shall dwell Vidar and Vali.
- 23:57Speaker 1: When the fire of Surtur is slackened, Modi and Magni
- 24:01Speaker 1: shall have mule Neir. At the ceasing of Thor's strife,
- 24:05Speaker 1: in the place called Holdmmir's holt, there shall lie hidden
- 24:08Speaker 1: during the fire of Surtur too of mankind, who are
- 24:12Speaker 1: called thus Leif and Li Thrasir. And for food they
- 24:16Speaker 1: shall have the morning dews. From these folk shall come
- 24:20Speaker 1: so numerous an offspring that all the world shall be peopled.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Even as is said here Leif and Li Thrasir, thee
- 24:28Speaker 1: shall lurk hidden in the holt of hod Mimir the
- 24:31Speaker 1: morning dews their meat shall be. Thence are gender the generations.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And it may seem wonderful to THEE that the son
- 24:40Speaker 1: shall have borne a daughter not less fairer than herself.
- 24:43Speaker 1: And the daughter shall then tread in the steps of
- 24:45Speaker 1: her mother. As is said here, the elfin beam shall
- 24:49Speaker 1: bear a daughter. Ere Fenris drags her forth. That maid
- 24:53Speaker 1: shall go when the great gods die, to ride her
- 24:57Speaker 1: mother's road. But now if thou art able to ask
- 25:01Speaker 1: yet further than indeed, I know not whence answer shall
- 25:04Speaker 1: come to thee. For I never heard any man tell
- 25:07Speaker 1: forth at greater length the course of the world. And
- 25:11Speaker 1: now availed thyself of that which thou hast heard. Fifty
- 25:15Speaker 1: four thereupon Gunglari heard great noises on every side of him.
- 25:21Speaker 1: And then when he had looked about him more lo,
- 25:25Speaker 1: he stood out of doors on a level plain, and
- 25:28Speaker 1: saw no hole there and no castle. Then he went
- 25:31Speaker 1: his way forth and came home into his kingdom, and
- 25:34Speaker 1: told those tidings which he had seen and heard. And
- 25:37Speaker 1: after him each man told these tales to the other.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Here Vilkan closes his addition. Yunsen admits the following. But
- 25:48Speaker 1: the Esir sat them down to speak together, and took
- 25:52Speaker 1: counsel and recalled all these tales which had been told
- 25:55Speaker 1: to him. And they gave these same names that were
- 25:59Speaker 1: named before to them those men in places that were there,
- 26:02Speaker 1: to the end that when long ages should have passed away,
- 26:05Speaker 1: men should not doubt thereof that those iSER that were
- 26:09Speaker 1: but now spoken of, and these to whom the same
- 26:12Speaker 1: names were then given, were all one there thor was
- 26:15Speaker 1: so named, and he is the old Asa Thor. All
- 26:21Speaker 1: reject what follows. He is Uku Thor, and to him
- 26:25Speaker 1: are ascribed those mighty works which Hector wrought in Troy.
- 26:29Speaker 1: But this is the belief of men that the Turks
- 26:32Speaker 1: told of Ulysses and called him Loki, for the Turks
- 26:36Speaker 1: were his greatest foes. End of the Geffalgoning recording by
- 26:43Speaker 1: expatriate in Bangor, Maine.
