Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Rewinding Time With FOX & GENEVIEVE From TEMTRIS
Transcript
- 0:23Everyone. This is Fox from Tempers. I'm here with Genevieve's and we're with
- 0:29you tonight talking about how upcoming release rewinding time. Fantastic to speak to you
- 0:36again. Good to talk to you to Chris. Thanks your time. Are
- 0:39hear you busy? Flying out? So like you went out and then flying
- 0:42back in, then flying out again. I'm never ending cycle these days good
- 0:47stuff. IVE got to say, how good is it that you guys can
- 0:49actually hold up the CD and show it? Like too many people these days
- 0:52are just going digital, but this old school you need something tangible. They
- 0:57are. It's interesting watching people even shout out online about how a lot of
- 1:00the younger bands are pressing CDs, and I think I sell out of CDs.
- 1:06Why an't you pressing CDs? I originally just had to reorder more Chaos
- 1:10Divine albums, which we only released twelve months ago, because I've sold out
- 1:14already. Wow, order it. I don't understand why people don't do hard
- 1:18copies, because a lot of people don't promote themselves as well as you guys
- 1:21do. I think that's probably part of it. Yeah, I think it's
- 1:25part of I mean, our era of music. You could say in a
- 1:30way is a lot to do with. I mean, we grew up with
- 1:33records, so the artwork was an important part of the whole experience in opening
- 1:38the records and getting the inner sleeves out. So moving to CDs at the
- 1:42time felt like a bit of a step down, but it still was a
- 1:46physical product that contained the artistic imagery that goes with the whole package. And
- 1:52we're a little bit older school in that way. I know modern bands probably
- 1:56access that all through their video content things like that, but as Jens,
- 2:00we still take this stuff to two shows and we are still We're still making
- 2:06money and turn out lots of product that way, so it's still valuable for
- 2:10us. And it might sound stupid, but I think the music loses an
- 2:15essence of its soul when you just getting off the computer. Like if you're
- 2:19looking out of you you can read through the lyrics, you can see you
- 2:21they're thinking like it's it's just a it's a connection. I guess we'd rather
- 2:24than just looking at and listen to it. It definitely makes the whole package
- 2:29work. I mean, yeah, like you say, there's nothing more exciting
- 2:31than getting your cet at the shopper in the mail and opening it and going
- 2:34looking at the album covers, looking at the band photos inside, connecting those
- 2:38people that you know through the parts and the story that goes with the music
- 2:40that's written. So yeah, it's important for sure. Well, speaking of
- 2:45albums, the one you have been holding up is your new best of Rewinding
- 2:49Time, which's out June twenty eight. So you guys have released a few
- 2:52albums over the years, but is it a different feeling releasing and best on
- 2:54because you know the music's already out there. Yeah, it's over twenty year
- 3:00career. It was very interesting even going back to the early stuff and re
- 3:05listening to things and you have that sort of half sort of bull geez.
- 3:09It was a bit rough back then when we started, and we definitely you
- 3:13can hear the improvement over the years as you hope to hear, as both
- 3:17the technology and their own skills in production has improved, but it was still
- 3:23still go back and listen to the early songs and it was still difficult thinking
- 3:28which songs we would we would include, because you go that you think,
- 3:31well, the production might not be the most amazing compared to modern standards,
- 3:36but the music itself still stands up quite well. Did you ever try with
- 3:40the idea of re recording some of those songs and have an old song with
- 3:45a new twist. We've got two of them on there actually have been re
- 3:49recorded, so yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, there's there's been a
- 3:53little bit of reproduction to try and keep them true to the original but still
- 3:59balance amount a bit. The second album, Masquerade, probably suffered a little
- 4:04bit from a very harsh production level at the time, so I did a
- 4:12little bit of reworking with not so much the music itself, but just reapplied
- 4:17the mix and moved a few things around to try and get the sounds a
- 4:21bit better. Yeah, So, while are you going back through the tracks
- 4:26and picking which once to go? Like most bands have put out best of
- 4:30albums, you know, they've got twenty number one, so they go,
- 4:31yeah, we've got to tell you that, we got to take it.
- 4:32We've got to tell you that. But with you, guys, like your
- 4:35core base of fans are great, but you didn't have massive sales and stuff
- 4:40to go off, So what was your parameter for choosing what songs went on?
- 4:43There? I literally went online and asked the fans what they wanted,
- 4:46and I actually had some interesting responses and it was hard for us to go
- 4:51okay, we I mean we also went off like we put the Lives Become
- 4:55the Truth off the Laugh Down even though it wasn't a single, a major
- 4:59single we did with the film. We did do a lyric video, but
- 5:01not a major film with just because that song literally every time we play Live
- 5:05goes off. So it was like, you know, this is one of
- 5:09the most loved tracks of that album, so we've put it on. And
- 5:12that's how we sort of did that. With a lot of those tracks we
- 5:15chose, people went, oh, you've got to have like this song kept
- 5:16coming up like Milli Forever is a single, but everyone kept saying Forever,
- 5:20forever, forever. So we're like, okay, the fans want that,
- 5:24will give them that. So that's sort of how we picked Yeah, that
- 5:28the tracks. In the end, I think, yeah, there's definitely an
- 5:30element of connection to it that. I mean, all the songs that are
- 5:33on this best of compilation, we've had a strong connection with Live. There've
- 5:40been songs that have been the fans have responded to and requested again and again
- 5:45and again and still come to shows now and say, when you're putting this
- 5:47song back in the set because I'd love to hear it live again. I
- 5:49love that song or that was the first time I heard you guys, and
- 5:53I really enjoyed that song. And that's that speaks to us a lot,
- 5:58and that builds our connection with those particular songs as well. So all of
- 6:03the songs that have gone on to the album have that connection. There's there's
- 6:06songs where we feel we've connected with the fan base very strongly through this music
- 6:12and this song. Yeah, how about from a personal level, like you'd
- 6:15be going back through some songs that you've probably even forgotten that you've done in
- 6:18some respect, like did you still feel as connected to the older material?
- 6:21I guess as you did back that. Oh look, you still I still
- 6:26remember, like even the couple of tracks off Mask for eight album when we
- 6:30recorded them, I was seven months pregnant with this, you know, big
- 6:36belly, and I still remember being this year recording and thinking I'm going to
- 6:40push out a baby if by any dad a photo shoot, but my daughter
- 6:46was all of a couple of weeks old, and I'm trying to walk around
- 6:49in a corset that I used to wear then, and you know, breshly
- 6:53to baby in a course while we do a photo shoot rock it out with
- 6:56the Horns. I definitely brought it back to memories about what we went through,
- 7:00you know how long we've been going from what's happened over the twenty years.
- 7:02And two of the tracks on this album actually re recorded when Wayne rejoined
- 7:09the band Wayne Campbell, we went into the studio with Half and Redid Bullet
- 7:12and Awakening and there on this album we recorded them to check out the studio
- 7:16before we recorded our next album. So we've put those re recorded tracks song
- 7:20because they're off the first album. But yeah, they've got that better mix
- 7:24and sound, so they're you know, you look back at those things and
- 7:28progression in history of what we did and why we did things, and it's
- 7:31pretty cool looking back to everything and keeping with temptuous tradition. Like the artwork
- 7:39on the on the album is just great, mate, Like Okay, it's
- 7:41it's evil, but it's captivating. Like where do you come up with the
- 7:45ideas for them from that? Was? Well, I had the idea of
- 7:50putting all the album covers together, and he put it. He comes up
- 7:55with a clever putting it together. So we've sort of I mean, even
- 8:00from the early days, we had a theme behind it. I mean,
- 8:03we grew up with icons like Eddie and Vic Bradlehead and all that sort of
- 8:09stuff, So you think along those lines, but you don't want to do
- 8:11that that belongs to our sort of icons of that ere we grew up aspiring
- 8:18to. I grew up more hanging around with with comic book people and people
- 8:22that were involved in that side of things, So there was there's always an
- 8:26element of from my perspective, when we take the ideas, trying to turn
- 8:33them into something that reflects our character and Temptress as the character that you see
- 8:39on the when she one of the better expression appears on each of the album
- 8:43covers, She's gone through our own personal journeys. So that's a that's a
- 8:52running theme that we have throughout. Sometimes it can be a bit more difficult
- 8:56to tell what she's up to than others, but there's always a background element
- 9:01that we like to talk about. Each one of the album covers has its
- 9:03connection to the overall theme of the album, and it has its own story
- 9:07that goes with it. So she got ourselves a few grays after twenty years
- 9:11or is she still looking good? Well, I mean, if you take
- 9:15Chaos Toy Jan as the last release, she's quite robotic. Keep it up
- 9:20with the times, Yeah, yeah, most of the parts have been replaced.
- 9:24Like us, it's sort of that's funny. But we knew we had
- 9:28this, we wanted to. We got offered when we went over to Europe
- 9:31last year. We got offered to come back this year to play at Metal
- 9:33Babes Festival, and I said to the guys, you know, oh,
- 9:37we really need it. We can't. We can either record a single and
- 9:39try and just promote that before we go over to promote the tour, or
- 9:43we can what if we do another album? And we knew it was coming
- 9:46up to that twenty years so I said to Fox, why don't we just
- 9:48do a best of album for our reason for touring? And then good idea.
- 9:54Everyone was like, yeah, that's a great idea because people want the
- 9:56early songs and we didn't have the CDs available anymore. So this whole theme
- 10:01came up with, Okay, let's do a rewinding time tour and then we'll
- 10:03go on play some of these older songs on our tour in Europe and when
- 10:07we come back, paying steal Assassins Festival. We'll play a couple of the
- 10:09old tracks on there, and yeah, and then of course it all grew
- 10:13from there. And then we got the grant as well from creating New World,
- 10:16which is help pay for the whole thing better. That's good on you
- 10:20guys, reward for effort. I say, yeah, yeah, you've also
- 10:26got a new light of merch that's coming out to tell us about that.
- 10:31Yeah, we've everybody loves a hoodie of course and a T shirt, so
- 10:37we've done We've done the T shirt with all the album covers on the cover
- 10:41on the front, and it's actually got on the back of it. It's
- 10:43got all the album releases from the beginning with the year it came out.
- 10:48So I say, yeah, that's really that's a really nice touch. Yeah,
- 10:52so we photos on there too. You've got like photos from over the
- 10:56band's history. So here I notice, well that's actually in the in the
- 11:00CD. I've actually we wanted it to make it a collector thing, so
- 11:03it's actually got all the album launch photos in there. Gigs we've had with
- 11:09friends that have come to shows, all their pictures are in there. Everyone's
- 11:11faces and you're not sure how well it will show up on the camera,
- 11:15but it looks like the beginning there. These are all photos from live shows.
- 11:22It's awesome then to occasions, so people are in there, fans you
- 11:26might be in there as well. Just what I wanted to have a photo
- 11:28of the people that have put them in there as part of the history,
- 11:31because they start then there from the beginning and have made it what it is.
- 11:35You know, so you opened yourself up the potential problems over there.
- 11:39Oh, Johnny's going to look at it and he's going to go where have
- 11:41I come on there? You guys are also off to Europe in September,
- 11:54studying the Netherlands. You go through Belgium, Germany, Austria checked slim Radia
- 12:01on the twenty ninety to finish up like decent congratulations. Yeah, we're really
- 12:07excited. We like I said, we got the grant from New South Wales,
- 12:11which we were unexpecting. We were already going to go anyway, but
- 12:13then we saw this offer coming up where our offering grants, we thought we'd
- 12:16apply, which has taken the pressure off. As you know, a lot
- 12:20of bands are canceling touring at the moment because the cops are just huge.
- 12:24Flights are not cheap anymore, carfiral that stuff. And yeah, we literally
- 12:28if someone even wrote on my tour why you're playing Sweden, I said,
- 12:31give me a contact, so they did, and then Thomas reached out and
- 12:33me and said, I'll give you a show. So then we were like,
- 12:35okay, Sweden's added in the date and wants to play France. But
- 12:39I just it's logistically fitting everything in. I know it's not as big as
- 12:45Australia, but just at some point you've got to travel from A to B
- 12:48and you actually need to stop and rest as well. Definitely, so we
- 12:54fit it in as much as we can. There may be a couple more
- 12:56dates added in there from different places. We've got a car from overseas who's
- 13:01helping me out. So if you can grab a couple more shows, we'll
- 13:03slap them in and announce them a bit closer to the date. We've only
- 13:07really got sort of ten weeks and we're pretty much got to be packed up
- 13:11and ready to go. So that's awesome, guys. And just say someone
- 13:15is stubbled across this interview and they're watching it. Go there, this guy's
- 13:16sound all right, give us three songs off your best of that people should
- 13:20listen there if they know nothing about Temptress. Yeah, well, gee,
- 13:26well Awakening is the first ever Temptress power metal traditional metal song. I hope
- 13:33you could steal towards that one. That's pretty true and honest. You'd be
- 13:37looking at tracks like lies Become the Truth, you'd be looking at forever,
- 13:46and then you would probably go back into the back catalog and depending on where
- 13:50your sort of musical tastes lie, because we tend to write more to the
- 13:54music than stick to a particular style, so these a real sort of diversity
- 14:00as you go further back. If I just take the two examples that are
- 14:03on the Best of from the Shallow Grave here, one is Shallow Grave,
- 14:07which is quite a doomy start and phoenix sort of song. It's got the
- 14:15epic sort of feel to it. And back to back with that we put
- 14:18your Time Has Come, which is can you describe that? It's short,
- 14:24sharp, It's very rhythm and groove driven, even a little bit more sort
- 14:31of New metal ish in its styling, so distinctly different tracks, and you'd
- 14:37have to sort of I would encourage people to sort of dig around in the
- 14:41back catalog a bit until you found that level of tempess that matched your your
- 14:46likes and what you might to hear. Now, you didn't answer my question
- 14:50at all, but I get where you're coming from. All right, guys,
- 14:56the time would been the pleasure. The album Rewinding Time is out June
- 15:01twenty eighth, and everything Temptress has ever put out his quality, So you
- 15:05get the whole lot of quality in one hit. So well done. Shoot
- 15:09us a message if you want to copy, kick up the tempress page.
- 15:11The Tempress will have it up on the website to order from, or you
- 15:15can hit me up and I'll organize it for you and post one out you.
- 16:18You walk a book, stop chanting, see the bad, feel the
- 16:32painting, painting the guy and we take God do we will? We come
- 16:49to game? Oh you sir? It so got to get Yeah, I
- 17:11don't know. No, father guy got no, don't thank God. Ray
- 17:22he'll pay the game. No, we come to get so fonder. My
- 17:41man go to you, go and wait, don't you gay? So I
- 19:14think you out? No? So wait so wait no, so fas
