Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: What's Really Going On?
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: What's going on everyone? EMILYA Badi Here you are listening
- 0:22Speaker 1: to another episode of Five Minute Friday from Hurdle. This
- 0:27Speaker 1: has been one of those weeks that was NonStop. It
- 0:33Speaker 1: was early mornings and late nights. It was trying to
- 0:36Speaker 1: make time to fit everything in. It was checking in
- 0:40Speaker 1: on my people. I had the honor of hosting a
- 0:43Speaker 1: dinner earlier this week. I did it with the help
- 0:47Speaker 1: of the team at On, who helped me cover the cost.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I invited a woman in the industry, the wellness industry
- 0:55Speaker 1: specifically that inspire me and motivate me, and we sat
- 0:59Speaker 1: down and we just laid it on. We talked about
- 1:03Speaker 1: the good and the bad, the moments that are hard,
- 1:06Speaker 1: the hurdles that we face each and every day, the
- 1:09Speaker 1: struggles that we navigate as individuals that are at the
- 1:13Speaker 1: helm of our respective communities. And it felt so good
- 1:18Speaker 1: in that moment to feel less alone in all of
- 1:23Speaker 1: the things that I go through on a day to day.
- 1:28Speaker 1: And I walked away from that dinner feeling so much gratitude,
- 1:34Speaker 1: but also really reminded of the benefit of community. And
- 1:41Speaker 1: on top of that, I was also reminded that there
- 1:45Speaker 1: are so many people that are going through something each
- 1:50Speaker 1: and every day that you have absolutely no concept of,
- 1:55Speaker 1: whether it's a coworker or a good friend even or
- 2:00Speaker 1: family member. Whenever we come into contact with a human
- 2:04Speaker 1: being anyone period, we are only privy to so much information.
- 2:11Speaker 1: And between the laughs and the hugs and the joy
- 2:14Speaker 1: that I felt in this room, there were also so
- 2:17Speaker 1: many conversations of struggle and things that from the outside
- 2:22Speaker 1: looking in you would have no idea or going on
- 2:27Speaker 1: with maybe someone that you admire, and whether or not
- 2:30Speaker 1: it's someone with a gazillion followers or five followers, that
- 2:34Speaker 1: is completely irrelevant. And let me tell you, since then,
- 2:39Speaker 1: every single person that I talked to, something heavy is
- 2:43Speaker 1: going on, things are feeling some kind of way. And
- 2:49Speaker 1: so I guess the theme of the week. The thing
- 2:52Speaker 1: that I'm thinking of really this five minute Friday is
- 2:56Speaker 1: to have compassion for your fellow Come in today, tomorrow,
- 3:01Speaker 1: next week, next month, next year, knowing that they too
- 3:05Speaker 1: are navigating their own hurdles just like you. My prompt
- 3:11Speaker 1: for you this week, what is one relationship in your
- 3:15Speaker 1: life that could use more attention or nurturing? How can
- 3:20Speaker 1: you approve upon it? What is one relationship in your
- 3:24Speaker 1: life that could use more attention or nurturing and how
- 3:28Speaker 1: can you improve upon it? And now a listener question.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, this is Addi from Chicago. I love following
- 3:37Speaker 2: your podcast and following you on social media. You always
- 3:40Speaker 2: seem like you have so many irons in the fire
- 3:43Speaker 2: and are incredibly efficient at getting things done. Can you
- 3:46Speaker 2: share how you are so productive? How do you go
- 3:48Speaker 2: about planning your to do list each day while balancing
- 3:51Speaker 2: long term goals both personally and professionally. Are there any
- 3:55Speaker 2: certain technologies that you use? Are you more of a
- 3:57Speaker 2: pen and paper kind of gal? And how do you
- 3:59Speaker 2: go about optimizing your schedule and energy? Thank you so
- 4:03Speaker 2: much for putting out so much great content.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Wow, talk about a flattering voice message. I appreciate you, Addie. Wow. Okay,
- 4:13Speaker 1: so productivity, I would say that when it comes to
- 4:17Speaker 1: balancing short and long term goals, this actually really sticks
- 4:20Speaker 1: for me. By doing an inventory week by week of
- 4:24Speaker 1: kind of where I'm stacking up. So I set goals
- 4:27Speaker 1: at the top of a new year, I break those
- 4:29Speaker 1: goals up into quarters, and every Sunday I sit down
- 4:35Speaker 1: with my planner and I'll link it in the show notes,
- 4:37Speaker 1: and I do an inventory of how I am working
- 4:42Speaker 1: in relation to the goals that I have set for
- 4:43Speaker 1: a certain period of time. I'll be upfront that one
- 4:46Speaker 1: goal I'm totally slacking on right now that I did
- 4:49Speaker 1: have a strong why for at the top of twenty
- 4:52Speaker 1: twenty four is setting a budget in place. And so
- 4:55Speaker 1: this is one that every week so far I'm like,
- 4:58Speaker 1: I'm going to make time for the budget to time
- 5:00Speaker 1: for the budget, and I haven't made time yet for
- 5:02Speaker 1: the budget. But trust me, now that I said that
- 5:05Speaker 1: I'm determined, I'm really determined. Anyway. I digress on a
- 5:09Speaker 1: day to day kind of basis. I am a pen
- 5:12Speaker 1: and paper girlie. I do live by my Google calendar.
- 5:15Speaker 1: But when I sit down at the desk, if that
- 5:17Speaker 1: is an option that I have first thing and I'm
- 5:20Speaker 1: not running around, I will answer a few questions including
- 5:24Speaker 1: what I'm grateful for today, what the goal is for today,
- 5:27Speaker 1: and what will make today great, and then I write
- 5:31Speaker 1: down everything that I want to accomplish in the day,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and then I move those into time blocks. So the
- 5:38Speaker 1: journal again I'll get in the show notes has a
- 5:41Speaker 1: schedule from six am to nine pm. Thank god, I
- 5:44Speaker 1: do not work hours like that, but I will write down,
- 5:49Speaker 1: for instance, record intro for Monday's episode, and maybe that's
- 5:53Speaker 1: from like ten to ten thirty, and then write an
- 5:56Speaker 1: article for GQ. Maybe that's something that's going to take
- 5:59Speaker 1: an hour, all program that in from two to three.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And I also try to work based on my strengths,
- 6:06Speaker 1: so I know that the work that I want to
- 6:08Speaker 1: be really dialed in on, ie writing, idating, creating, or
- 6:13Speaker 1: working on decks or pitches for brands or collaborations, that's
- 6:17Speaker 1: the kind of stuff that I want to do as
- 6:19Speaker 1: close as when I sit down at my desk as possible.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I am just a more focused, productive person in the morning,
- 6:26Speaker 1: and then come the afternoon, that's what I like to
- 6:29Speaker 1: do a lot of my podcasts. I feel like I
- 6:31Speaker 1: have the mental capacity and the breath and the space
- 6:34Speaker 1: to have really engaged conversations at that time. And then
- 6:38Speaker 1: after that like mid daytime period, that's when I take
- 6:41Speaker 1: a lot of calls or meetings. So this is just
- 6:44Speaker 1: a format that I've learned that's worked for me, and
- 6:46Speaker 1: why not play to my strengths. The last thing I'll
- 6:51Speaker 1: say when it comes to being productive and whatnot is
- 6:54Speaker 1: that not every day is going to be a home
- 6:56Speaker 1: run and so I think such a major skill is
- 7:00Speaker 1: failing fast, And for me, failing fast and the terms
- 7:04Speaker 1: of productivity means calling it. When you realize you are
- 7:07Speaker 1: staring off into space, nothing's getting done, and take a break.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Go do something that serves you. Maybe it's simply a
- 7:13Speaker 1: walk around the block. Maybe it's a few jumping jacks.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Move that energy, get things flowing, and you'll be better
- 7:20Speaker 1: for it. Sometimes you've just got to turn on a
- 7:23Speaker 1: TV show and take an hour off. That's it for
- 7:27Speaker 1: this week. Make sure you're following along with hurdle over
- 7:30Speaker 1: on social It's at Hurdle Podcast. I am over at
- 7:33Speaker 1: Emily a Body, Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
