- 0:00Hello, everyone, and welcome back to another episode on the Real Life Theology podcast.
- 0:08Today's episode is going to feature Jonathan Storment, who's going to share with us how
- 0:14to resist cultural formation by pursuing full discipleship to Jesus.
- 0:21I hope you guys enjoy this episode.
- 0:25Let's gather back together.
- 0:29So I want to build on what Brother Bobby said, and by the way, I'm so honored to get to be
- 0:34here and get to meet you and hopefully tribe up with some of y'all.
- 0:41Last week, I had a ton of friends send me that Atlantic article that Brother Bobby was
- 0:46just quoting from.
- 0:48The Atlantic article is responding to the January 6th riot on the Capitol, and these
- 0:53people holding up the sign of Jesus, and it's them trying to make sense of what is
- 1:00happening in Christianity in America.
- 1:03And there's this one line in that article that's haunting.
- 1:07It's where Dr. Jacob says, honestly, American Christianity is less about Christology and
- 1:17more about sociology.
- 1:21That's big, fancy words to say, basically, there's nothing here.
- 1:27We vote the same as our secular, unbelieving neighbors.
- 1:32We sleep around the same.
- 1:34We view porn the same.
- 1:36We beat our spouses the same.
- 1:38We're as racist.
- 1:42It's hollow is what they're saying.
- 1:45So I grew up very conservative Church of Christ.
- 1:48I was in the Taliban version of Church of Christ.
- 1:52And then I went and got a Bible major, and I went and worked at some great churches.
- 1:59But I would say I went from being overly conservative, and it was because I cared so much about my
- 2:06friends that were walking away from faith, that I became enamored with all things progressive.
- 2:11I was trying to be relevant, and looking back on it, there were two things that were happening.
- 2:18One, if I'm really honest, and this is painfully honest, because this is still true about me,
- 2:23I want to look sophisticated.
- 2:28But the second thing I realized is that I was lower, unintentionally, I was lowering
- 2:35the bar of discipleship in my own life and in the lives of the people I was trying to
- 2:42reach.
- 2:43So for the last 10 years, I have kept this picture on my desktop and my computer.
- 2:49His name is August Vissemer, and he is in, this is in 1936.
- 2:55Is that picture up?
- 2:57Okay.
- 2:58In 1936, this is a Nazi rally that Hitler is at.
- 3:03This is not just any Nazi rally.
- 3:06Hitler is here, and people are falling all over themselves to honor Hitler.
- 3:13Except that one guy.
- 3:15And this picture haunts me because I think, wouldn't he just raise your hand and kind
- 3:21of insincerely participate?
- 3:23I mean, he's going to die for this, but he doesn't.
- 3:27And that picture haunts me because I think, what would I do in that moment?
- 3:32Karl Barth, one of my favorite Christians from the last 100 years, was one of the few
- 3:37people who stood up to Hitler during the 1930s, 1920s, and 30s because Nazism had taken
- 3:45over.
- 3:46And here's the thing, Brett McCracken in his book, Hipster Christianity, he talks about
- 3:50the thing, he studied Nazi culture, and he said, it wasn't just politics they took over.
- 3:55It was all the soft forms of power.
- 3:59So they took over the elementary schools.
- 4:02They took over pop music.
- 4:04They took over all the Boy Scouts.
- 4:08Nazism wasn't just evil.
- 4:12Here's the point you need to realize.
- 4:13It was cool.
- 4:16In that moment, in that cultural moment, it was cool.
- 4:20And only one person really, only a few people stood up to him, Karl Barth being one of them.
- 4:27And Karl Barth used to open up his seminary classes, not with the Bible, but with this
- 4:32brilliant atheist named Furelbrock.
- 4:35I can't even say his name.
- 4:37The guy went on to invent a popcorn.
- 4:39Furelbrock was this brilliant atheist from the 17th century, and he said that all the
- 4:45world religions are basically human wish projecting onto this big thing they call God.
- 4:53So we want sex, we have a sex God.
- 4:55We want race wars, we have a tribal God.
- 4:59All these things.
- 5:00Karl Barth said, this is true.
- 5:04He's right.
- 5:05This is the beginning of wisdom, and the departure for all Christian thought must start right
- 5:12there.
- 5:13Because if you want a God, who would make up a God like Jesus?
- 5:18Who would make up a God who says, if you want to know how well you love me, love your enemies?
- 5:23Who would make up a God that would put the book of Jonah in the Bible?
- 5:29It's just a book, honestly, about loving your enemies and against racism.
- 5:33I mean, who would make up this God?
- 5:35And Barth said, that's right.
- 5:37That is true about world religions, but that is not true about the God revealed in Jesus
- 5:43Christ.
- 5:45And Hitler, as he took over all these different places through soft power, the place he took
- 5:50over last was the church.
- 5:52And here's what he said to people like you and me.
- 5:55He said, now listen, you can keep running things as normal.
- 5:59Just do these couple of things.
- 6:00One, you can't preach from the Old Testament.
- 6:03And two, you can't mention that Jesus was a Jew.
- 6:06And Karl Barth stood up the next Sunday and preached a sermon called, creatively, Jesus
- 6:12was a Jew, and he mailed it to Hitler.
- 6:16Then he fled to Switzerland.
- 6:20Now listen, Hitler was fine with Jesus, as long as it was Hitler's Jesus.
- 6:27Your politicians love to quote Jesus, as long as it's their kind of Jesus.
- 6:34Hollywood has no problem with Jesus, as long as it's their kind of Jesus.
- 6:40There's a part in 2 Corinthians 11 where Paul, the apostle Paul, actually says, if someone
- 6:45comes to you and preaches a different Jesus.
- 6:50So here's what this means for us.
- 6:52We may not all mean the same thing when we say the name Jesus.
- 6:57There are different Jesuses.
- 6:58Which Jesus do you want to be discipled by?
- 7:03There's progressive Jesus that has nothing to say about your sexuality.
- 7:06There's American Jesus that supported every war.
- 7:10There's Southern Jesus that supported racist Jim Crow laws in the past.
- 7:16There's religious Jesus that sounds more like the Pharisees of the Gospels than the
- 7:21Jesus of the New Testament.
- 7:24Which Jesus?
- 7:25Do you know, for the first hundred years of Christianity, the most popular gospel was
- 7:29the Gospel of Matthew, because there was more FaceTime with Jesus in there, more red letters.
- 7:35It was seen as a manual of discipleship.
- 7:39People used that to learn what it means to follow Jesus, because at the end of the Gospel
- 7:43of Matthew, he says, teach them to obey what?
- 7:46Everything.
- 7:47Not how to do church on Sunday morning.
- 7:51Not how to be religious.
- 7:53How to live like a new creation.
- 7:57That's what he's teaching us.
- 7:58To be a disciple of Jesus Christ means how to be nonviolent, how to be generous with
- 8:04your money, how to treat women, how to use or not use your sexuality, how to love people
- 8:09of other races that you don't naturally love, how to do business like God is watching, how
- 8:15to be married, how to stay married, how to stay single, basically how to lay down your
- 8:19life for the watching world.
- 8:22God wants all of it.
- 8:24So there's a time right in the middle of the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus takes his disciple
- 8:28Peter, his most caffeinated disciple, and he asked him, who do people say that I am?
- 8:34And Peter says, you're the Messiah.
- 8:37And then Jesus says, you're right, and I'm going to die naked on a cross.
- 8:41And Peter says, nope, no you're not.
- 8:45And Jesus says to Peter, get behind me, because the proper place for a disciple is behind
- 8:56him.
- 8:57In other words, we don't get to make this crap up.
- 9:02We have a tradition that we have received, not one that we get to invent.
- 9:10That's what Jesus is telling us.
- 9:12We don't get to make this stuff up.
- 9:15He's saying to Peter, Peter, you get to decide if you want to be a part of the kingdom of
- 9:19God, but you do not get to decide what the kingdom of God is.
- 9:24So do you know why Christianity grew the first few hundred years?
- 9:28There's this great historian, Larry Hurtado, who said there are five distinctions about
- 9:33Christianity that were incredibly different in the ancient world, and they're incredibly
- 9:38different today.
- 9:40The church was multiracial and multiethnic.
- 9:43It had a high value for inclusion, diversity, and equity.
- 9:47The church cared for the poor.
- 9:50It had a lot to say about how you used your money to serve people that had less than you.
- 9:56The church was staunch in its resistance to abortion and infanticide.
- 10:01The church was resolute in its mission.
- 10:04Its vision for sexuality was only between a man and a woman in a lifelong covenant relationship,
- 10:10and it was nonviolent in every way.
- 10:13Now here's my question.
- 10:16What political party represents that, right?
- 10:21This is a different way of being human.
- 10:24I mean, there are people on the left like two of those, people on the right like two
- 10:27of those, and that last one, nonviolent, nobody likes.
- 10:32So which Jesus?
- 10:34Because we don't get to make this stuff up.
- 10:37This is why I like Renew, because they're trying to help churches be disciples of this
- 10:42guy, and my politics are the least important thing about me.
- 10:47I hope that's true about you, because if Jesus asked me to change my mind, I'd have to.
- 10:53Otherwise, it's not Jesus I'm following, that's a version of Jesus I'm using.
- 11:02So the reason I push back often these days on progressive Christianity is not because
- 11:10I don't believe in progress, but because I do.
- 11:12I just don't think there's been another, a better vision of the future that's come along
- 11:17in the last couple thousand years than the apostles and prophets of the past.
- 11:24This new heaven and new earth, this restored humanity filled with people from every tribe
- 11:29and every tongue who bend their knee to King Jesus.
- 11:34So back to the 1930s, when that happened, there was most people, and by the way, this
- 11:41is in the world's most sophisticated theological system they had ever known.
- 11:47Nazi Germany grew.
- 11:48The Tübingen School, these people were brilliant.
- 11:51If you've ever seen the TDNT, the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, that guy
- 11:55was a resolute Nazi.
- 11:59But there was a small group of people, the confessing church, that probably could have
- 12:03fit in this room today.
- 12:05And one of those most famous disciples was Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
- 12:10He came to America.
- 12:12He was not impressed with the discipleship that was happening here then.
- 12:16But he knew that when Jesus calls a man, he bids him come and die.
- 12:20And so he went back to his home country, and he started these seminaries he called Schools
- 12:25of Death, because that's what you're doing as a disciple maker.
- 12:30And word got out that he was kind of taking this pretty aggressively.
- 12:34He was the Bobby Harrington of Nazi Germany.
- 12:39And so some friends came to Dietrich and said, hey, man, you're really emphasizing,
- 12:47you're being too spiritual.
- 12:49And so one day, as recounted in his book, Beautiful Resistance, John Tyson says, one
- 12:55day, he takes out one of his friends on a boat ride, and he shows them what's happening
- 13:02next door to his seminary, his School of Death, is a Nazi soldier boot camp.
- 13:09And they're seeing the soldiers run and do calisthenics.
- 13:12And they're seeing the soldiers, you know, push-ups and learning how to fly planes and
- 13:17all those things.
- 13:18And they're training very severely.
- 13:21And Bonhoeffer says to his friend, what we do here must be stronger than what they're
- 13:28doing there.
- 13:31In other words, spiritual training must be stronger than cultural formation.
- 13:38Leadership must be stronger.
- 13:40What we do in our homes, in our churches, must be stronger than the cultural formation
- 13:49that we're living in, because the times call for a beautiful resistance.
- 13:54And that brings me back to this guy.
- 13:56You know, he has no idea the way history is going to play out, right?
- 14:00I mean, think about the pressure.
- 14:03It's not just that it's, you know, everybody's doing it.
- 14:05It's that it's cool.
- 14:07He has no idea the way history is going to play out.
- 14:10He doesn't know that for decades, the Nazi gesture is going to be an obscene gesture.
- 14:16All he knows is what he's experiencing right now.
- 14:19But you know why he does this?
- 14:22Because he had married Irma, a Jewish woman.
- 14:28And he knew he had seen the face of what they were calling the enemy.
- 14:33And he knew he couldn't hate her.
- 14:36There are many, there are good reasons to be willing to be uncool.
- 14:41But the greatest is love.
- 14:44And I don't know about you, but I think the place to start as we try to resist the cultural
- 14:55formation of our day is falling deeply in love with Jesus.
- 15:02Do you know what Jesus is?
- 15:05Jesus is the new Adam.
- 15:07He's the new creation.
- 15:08He's the first fruits of the new creation.
- 15:10He did for us what we could not do for ourselves and in our better moments.
- 15:13Even our good stuff is tainted because we can't do it for ourselves.
- 15:18Jesus is the shining that your shame cannot extinguish.
- 15:23He is the door where you thought there was only wall.
- 15:26He is what comes after deserving.
- 15:30We may be tempted to worship kings.
- 15:33Trust me, church, he may be like a king, but kings are not like him.
- 15:42Praise be to Jesus.
- 15:43May we fall deeply in love with him and resist anything less than full discipleship to that.
