- 0:00Speaker 1: Gospel reflection for the 25th day of October in the
- 0:03Speaker 1: year of our Lord, 2026. This comes from the Gospel
- 0:07Speaker 1: of Matthew, chapter 22, verses 34 through 40. But the Pharisees,
- 0:13Speaker 1: hearing that he had silenced the Sadducees, came together, and
- 0:16Speaker 1: one of them, a doctor of the law, asking him,
- 0:18Speaker 1: tempting him, Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Jesus said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy
- 0:25Speaker 1: God with thy whole heart, with thy whole soul, and
- 0:28Speaker 1: with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the
- 0:31Speaker 1: first commandment. And the second is like to this, Thou
- 0:34Speaker 1: shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments
- 0:37Speaker 1: dependeth the whole law and the prophets. Now imagine for
- 0:41Speaker 1: a moment if our religion was not necessarily taught to
- 0:45Speaker 1: us or ministered to us by priests, monks, nuns, deacons, teachers, etc.
- 0:50Speaker 1: What if our religious officials were attorneys, judges, politicians, police officers,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and bureaucrats? Essentially this was the case in the earthly world.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I am of our Lord. The law had come to
- 1:02Speaker 1: be worshipped as an end to itself rather than a
- 1:04Speaker 1: system of instruction that helped one worship God. Imagine for
- 1:08Speaker 1: a moment that instead of going to Mass you had
- 1:09Speaker 1: to go to the DMV and some state employee examined
- 1:13Speaker 1: you to make sure you were following every regulation and
- 1:16Speaker 1: penalized you if you did not. What Jesus tells us
- 1:20Speaker 1: is that his yoke is light. Consider the words of
- 1:24Speaker 1: today's gospel. It is certainly not easy to love your
- 1:26Speaker 1: neighbors yourself and to love God with all of your heart.
- 1:29Speaker 1: But that is what every letter of the law meant
- 1:33Speaker 1: to accomplish. To love God means to keep his commandments,
- 1:37Speaker 1: which is not easy. To love your neighbor means charity
- 1:40Speaker 1: and compassion, self-sacrifice and service. Perhaps that's harder still, but
- 1:44Speaker 1: it is doable. It is possible for every man, woman,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and child, regardless of intelligence, education, economic or social status,
- 1:52Speaker 1: to do this very thing. Often it is far more
- 1:55Speaker 1: easy for the poor and the humble and the simple.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Jesus brought an end to Torah law and temple worship.
- 2:02Speaker 1: No longer did God have to be worshipped in one
- 2:04Speaker 1: place and in a legalistic manner. The Christian would not
- 2:07Speaker 1: be a slave to the law, but would be free
- 2:10Speaker 1: as an heir. But with that freedom comes great responsibility.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Alright y'all, have a great Sunday. Go to Mass and
- 2:19Speaker 1: I will talk to you tomorrow.
