- 0:00Speaker 1: To talk college baseball will do that. The National Championship
- 0:03Speaker 1: Series between Coastal Carolina and LSU is all set. In
- 0:09Speaker 1: fact on the text line, our friend Seatpal said, Coastal
- 0:12Speaker 1: hits well, not a lot of it, not a lot
- 0:16Speaker 1: of home runs. It seems you're exactly right, Seatpale, And
- 0:22Speaker 1: I like the comparison that Kyle Peterson made last night
- 0:28Speaker 1: he was on Sports Center with Scott Van Pelt, which
- 0:33Speaker 1: I think, by the way, just my own personal perspective,
- 0:35Speaker 1: is one of the best things that ESPN even does.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:38Speaker 1: There's a lot that they've for want of a better term,
- 0:43Speaker 1: sunk to that I don't like, But there are some
- 0:47Speaker 1: things they still do. Sports Center is one of those,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and Scott Van Pelt doing it, I think is tremendous.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I think his program is as good as they have.
- 0:55Speaker 1: But he had Kyle Peterson on from the booth right
- 1:00Speaker 1: after that wild finish to the LSU Arkansas game, and
- 1:07Speaker 1: he asked him about those those, you know, the big
- 1:12Speaker 1: plays in there, and Vehava Alloy not starting what could
- 1:15Speaker 1: have been should have been really a game ending six
- 1:18Speaker 1: four to three double play to extend it to one
- 1:20Speaker 1: more game today instead opting to go to third, and
- 1:23Speaker 1: then the fly ball that Davelon slipped going forward and
- 1:29Speaker 1: glanced off of him and it brought him the tying runs,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and then da van Horn's decision to have to pitch
- 1:39Speaker 1: to Jared Jones, the best hitter for LSU, and he
- 1:41Speaker 1: drives home the game winning run. He asked him about
- 1:44Speaker 1: all those things, but then he asked him about the
- 1:47Speaker 1: two teams that are left in that are still standing
- 1:53Speaker 1: in the College World Series, and he talked about LSU
- 2:00Speaker 1: and said, because van Pell asked him a kind of
- 2:03Speaker 1: a leading question, but Vampelt was exactly right on point
- 2:07Speaker 1: when he said it. This isn't your typical LSU team,
- 2:11Speaker 1: is it? And he said, no, not really. They hit
- 2:14Speaker 1: a little less, but they still hit. They have two
- 2:20Speaker 1: outstanding starting pitchers and then a collection of guys, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: they have an outstanding closer and a collection of guys
- 2:28Speaker 1: like a lot of teams go to mom And then
- 2:32Speaker 1: he asked him about Coastal Carolina and he said, does
- 2:35Speaker 1: this team remind you of anybody?
- 2:38Speaker 2: And he said, yeah, it does.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It reminds me of some of the teams Augie Gurrito
- 2:42Speaker 1: brought here both when he was at cal State Fullerton
- 2:45Speaker 1: and then at Texas, teams that just.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Did everything well.
- 2:50Speaker 1: They weren't necessarily spectacular at anything, but did everything well,
- 2:58Speaker 1: hit well, enough, a little bit of power, pitched really well,
- 3:06Speaker 1: and played defense really really well. And when you add
- 3:09Speaker 1: all that up, you got a shot to win. You
- 3:11Speaker 1: had a chance to win that. And when I think
- 3:14Speaker 1: back to his two national championship teams at Texas two
- 3:18Speaker 1: and five, and even if you want to include the
- 3:21Speaker 1: teams that didn't win it but were there, his first
- 3:23Speaker 1: one in two thousand was built largely on pitching and defense.
- 3:30Speaker 1: They pulled off a big surprise winning a regional out
- 3:34Speaker 1: in Tempee against a heavily favored Arizona State team, and
- 3:37Speaker 1: they had to come through the losers bracket to do it,
- 3:41Speaker 1: went home, and they would have had to go to
- 3:43Speaker 1: North Carolina for the Super Regional, except Carolina was upset
- 3:46Speaker 1: by Penn State, and so Penn State, which had not
- 3:51Speaker 1: submitted a bid to Hoe even host, came to Austin
- 3:55Speaker 1: and Texas swept him, and then went to Omaha and
- 4:00Speaker 1: lost LSU in Florida State in their season was over,
- 4:03Speaker 1: but it was a team that was kind of ahead
- 4:05Speaker 1: of itself in the program. The next year, in OH one,
- 4:07Speaker 1: they got to the regional against Stamford and they actually
- 4:10Speaker 1: beat Stamford in the second game, but lost two heartbreaking
- 4:12Speaker 1: one run games. It's very similar to David Pearce's first
- 4:18Speaker 1: season at Texas in seventeen when the Long Runs went
- 4:20Speaker 1: out to the Long Beach Regional and won their first
- 4:23Speaker 1: two games to beat UCLA, and then they beat the
- 4:24Speaker 1: host Long Beach, but then to get into the championship round,
- 4:28Speaker 1: lost two one run ball games to Long Beach, including
- 4:32Speaker 1: an extra innings game. So it was very similar to
- 4:34Speaker 1: that in one Stamford, but two Logie's first national championship
- 4:38Speaker 1: team in Texas. And remember he already run won three
- 4:43Speaker 1: at Fullerton seventy nine, eighty four, and ninety five, and
- 4:48Speaker 1: he had guys like Mark Cottsey, and he had some
- 4:52Speaker 1: tremendous players, Phil Nevin who played for him on those
- 4:57Speaker 1: Fullerton teams. But his teams were built on pitching in
- 5:00Speaker 1: defense and speed and creating runs, winning the inning. That's
- 5:04Speaker 1: what he wanted to win the inning, and this Coastal
- 5:08Speaker 1: team does a lot of that. In O two, his
- 5:10Speaker 1: first national championship team, it had more power. It had
- 5:16Speaker 1: Jeff Hanavirs who could hit home runs. It had Tim
- 5:20Speaker 1: Moss who had one hundred hit season. It had guys
- 5:23Speaker 1: like Eric Saltemeyer and j D. Reneger who could hit
- 5:26Speaker 1: home runs. They had incredible defense with Joe Farren the
- 5:31Speaker 1: Iowa State transplant after i was stated shut down its
- 5:35Speaker 1: collegiate baseball program after ninety nine, and Farren transferred to
- 5:39Speaker 1: Texas and was a fixture for the Longhorns in the
- 5:44Speaker 1: outfield along with Kalinning Napoleon. So those guys, but they
- 5:50Speaker 1: had They had a lot of pitching and defense. He
- 5:53Speaker 1: had Justin Simmons, the Big twelve pitcher of the year
- 5:55Speaker 1: that year, Jessin Merle. They they had a lot of
- 5:58Speaker 1: good guys, but they had some power too, and they
- 6:01Speaker 1: won in two and three. They went back with kind
- 6:04Speaker 1: of a similar team, and of course they had to
- 6:05Speaker 1: Houston Street as a freshman in two was the outstanding
- 6:09Speaker 1: player in Omaha. Went back in three and lost twice
- 6:13Speaker 1: to Rice that ended up winning the national championship. In four,
- 6:19Speaker 1: they really had cruised had not dropped a single game
- 6:22Speaker 1: in the post season, similar to what Coastal and LSU
- 6:25Speaker 1: have done. Coastal LSU dropped one game in the regional
- 6:29Speaker 1: and got all the way to the National Championship and
- 6:32Speaker 1: ran into the brick wall that cal State Fullerton had
- 6:35Speaker 1: with Jason Windsor and Ricky Romero, two great starting pitchers,
- 6:40Speaker 1: and they won both games, and they won the national
- 6:42Speaker 1: championship in five. When Texas came back, it was a
- 6:46Speaker 1: team that was one of those teams, like what was
- 6:51Speaker 1: spoken by Kyle Peterson, built on pitching and defense in
- 6:55Speaker 1: clutch play, a clutch hit here, a big out there,
- 7:00Speaker 1: will kroutch with a big home run in a series
- 7:02Speaker 1: up in Lincoln against Nebraska. Nick Peeple's great defense in
- 7:07Speaker 1: the outfield and can come up with a huge play.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Seth Johnston who batted over four hundred versus of the
- 7:12Speaker 1: entire season and was a staple there at shortstop. And
- 7:16Speaker 1: then David Morol who was hitting I believe two to
- 7:19Speaker 1: six for the season going in Omaha, and he was
- 7:23Speaker 1: the outstanding player in the College World Series because he
- 7:25Speaker 1: had two home runs and was just lights out. And
- 7:27Speaker 1: that's what Omaha can do four teams. It can also
- 7:30Speaker 1: do two teams what it did to Arkansas last night.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Omaha can be both a magical in a strange place
- 7:40Speaker 1: for that. But that team was built on all of
- 7:42Speaker 1: those things that Kyle Peterson talked about in five. In nine,
- 7:46Speaker 1: when they went back lost in the National Championship round
- 7:49Speaker 1: the LSU, it was built on that, plus the pitching
- 7:53Speaker 1: that they had a Taylor Youngman. Great team at nine
- 7:57Speaker 1: easily the best team not to get tomahaas the twenty
- 8:00Speaker 1: ten team where Youngman was the Golden Spikes Award winner
- 8:04Speaker 1: and the Dick Hows Award winner National Player of the
- 8:06Speaker 1: Year winner. Texas went twenty four and three in conference play,
- 8:12Speaker 1: which is still the best mark ever in Big twelve play.
- 8:17Speaker 1: But Jim Slosnago brought a TCU team down that was
- 8:20Speaker 1: really really good and had a fantastic left he named
- 8:23Speaker 1: Matt Perk, and they got to a final game and
- 8:26Speaker 1: He's won that game, and they went on Omaha Texas.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Then when next went back in fourteen and got to
- 8:34Speaker 1: the semifinals, lost to a Vanderbilt team that had Carson Fulmer, and.
- 8:40Speaker 2: They had.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Just great pitching and defense and timely hitting as well.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Walker Buller was on that team. He didn't pitch against Texas,
- 8:50Speaker 1: but he was on that teav pitched in Omaha for
- 8:53Speaker 1: that and Dan spy Swanson was the shortstop on that team,
- 8:57Speaker 1: so it was it was a great Vanderbilt team that
- 9:01Speaker 1: beat him and went on and won the national championship.
- 9:03Speaker 1: That was in fourteen, and then the next time they
- 9:06Speaker 1: went back was in eighteen when I was talking about
- 9:08Speaker 1: and they went in eighteen, and they went in twenty
- 9:11Speaker 1: one and twenty two, and they've been to Omaha more
- 9:14Speaker 1: than any other program. But this year it's either going
- 9:17Speaker 1: to be it will either be Coastal Carolina or LSU.
- 9:22Speaker 1: LSU in search of its eighth national title, Coastal in
- 9:28Speaker 1: search of its second winning the first time they went there,
- 9:30Speaker 1: and that's the only other time they've been there was
- 9:31Speaker 1: twenty sixteen and they won the national championship.
- 9:34Speaker 2: So it should be a really good.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Climactic inn to the college baseball season when those two
- 9:45Speaker 1: get together in Omahai and it'll.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Start on Saturday night. And Kyle Peterson made a very
- 9:51Speaker 2: good point on this KP. He said that.
- 9:56Speaker 1: This is setting up the way it should be in
- 9:59Speaker 1: that both teams are able to get through it without
- 10:03Speaker 1: dropping a game.
- 10:04Speaker 2: So they have two full days off.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I'm sure they had an off site light workout, having
- 10:11Speaker 1: been there when Texas was in that national championship.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Scene. I can tell you.
- 10:17Speaker 1: You get away from that, you have a couple of
- 10:19Speaker 1: days off and they would have an off site practice
- 10:25Speaker 1: pretty much a light workout, take some VP ground balls,
- 10:28Speaker 1: nothing real heavy duty, and then they come back another
- 10:32Speaker 1: workout day before the championship and they have the pre
- 10:35Speaker 1: Championship Series news conference as well, and then everybody's well rested.
- 10:41Speaker 1: They got all of their you might say, all of
- 10:45Speaker 1: their bullets available for them, all with their starting pitching
- 10:49Speaker 1: rotation set up to go the way it's gone for
- 10:53Speaker 1: them throughout all this Coastal has won twenty six straight games.
- 10:57Speaker 1: That's a record for most consecutive wins by a team
- 11:04Speaker 1: entering the Championship Series. The record was eighteen in a
- 11:09Speaker 1: row by USC, but that was in nineteen forty eight
- 11:13Speaker 1: when it was an eight team field. Might even have
- 11:16Speaker 1: just been a fourteen field that year in forty eight.
- 11:19Speaker 1: It started in forty seven in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Texas was
- 11:23Speaker 1: in that first one as well, and forty eight might
- 11:29Speaker 1: also been a fourteen field. They went to the eighteen
- 11:31Speaker 1: field in forty nine in Wichita, when Texas won its
- 11:34Speaker 1: first national title and the first of back to backs.
- 11:37Speaker 1: They won the last one that wasn't in Omaha nineteen
- 11:39Speaker 1: forty nine in Wichita, and then won the first one
- 11:42Speaker 1: in Omaha in nineteen fifty.
- 11:45Speaker 2: In that year, Jim.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Earler pitched a no hitter against Tufts, and it was
- 11:51Speaker 1: the first of now three no hitters to have been
- 11:54Speaker 1: pitched in the College World Series. The other two were
- 11:58Speaker 1: pitched by guys who played on teams that did not
- 12:02Speaker 1: end up winning the national title. In nineteen sixty, Jim
- 12:07Speaker 1: Wixon did it for Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma State was
- 12:12Speaker 1: the defending national champion. They'd won it all in fifty nine.
- 12:15Speaker 1: They were the defending national champion sixty, but they did
- 12:18Speaker 1: not win it. And of course, just the other day,
- 12:22Speaker 1: the no hit or thrown by gage Wood, and he
- 12:27Speaker 1: was one hit batter shy of a perfect game. He
- 12:30Speaker 1: hit a Murray State batter in the eighth inning. Other
- 12:35Speaker 1: than that, he retired everybody else he faced and struck
- 12:39Speaker 1: out nineteen guys and through the third no hitter in
- 12:42Speaker 1: College World Series history. However, Arkansas, by virtue of losing
- 12:46Speaker 1: last night, will not get a chance to capitalize on
- 12:49Speaker 1: that and play for national title. You know, if Arkansas
- 12:51Speaker 1: had won that game last night and came back. It
- 12:56Speaker 1: would have been interesting to see if Dave Van Horn
- 12:59Speaker 1: would have looked to gauge Withood because he had just
- 13:01Speaker 1: pitched Tuesday. Would have been just a little bit of
- 13:04Speaker 1: rest of you that maybe not start him a pitcher
- 13:06Speaker 1: on the side if he needed an innying out of him,
- 13:08Speaker 1: but would almost certainly would have been his Game one
- 13:10Speaker 1: starter had he not pitched, and say Arkansas would had
- 13:14Speaker 1: they won last night and then one again the day,
- 13:17Speaker 1: he probably would have started winning Game one of the
- 13:19Speaker 1: championship series. And Zach Rude had just pitched on Tuesday Wednesday,
- 13:24Speaker 1: so it would have been interesting to see how that
- 13:26Speaker 1: would have wound up. All right, there's a Momahaw perspective.
- 13:28Speaker 1: If we got some more in the NBA coming up
- 13:30Speaker 1: when we continue on thirteen under the Zone
