Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:11Speaker 2: All right, well one leg up. Alex Media was in
- 0:14Speaker 2: the house at Yankees home opener and lou we were
- 0:18Speaker 2: talking about the mental home opener. I can get to
- 0:20Speaker 2: that one, but the Yankees home opener and I have
- 0:23Speaker 2: some initial reactions. But firstly, h this ABS system is
- 0:28Speaker 2: becoming a storyline again. It was today Yanks actually ran
- 0:32Speaker 2: out of ABS challenges in their home opener. Lou I
- 0:36Speaker 2: said this last week. I'm going to say it again.
- 0:38Speaker 2: The ABS challenge will be maybe reshaping how these umpires
- 0:41Speaker 2: are trained. Is that going to be a possibility, Alex,
- 0:44Speaker 2: Thanks for having me again. I'm glad you enjoyed the
- 0:46Speaker 2: game of Yankee victory this afternoon. You so judge of
- 0:52Speaker 2: the home run in the first inning, but I also
- 0:56Speaker 2: want to see him doing in October. But you know,
- 0:58Speaker 2: we'll take a home opener home.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Run absolutely absolutely. You know, the A B A. The
- 1:05Speaker 1: ABS system has definitely had a profound effect in the
- 1:11Speaker 1: first seven days of the of the season, no doubt
- 1:14Speaker 1: about it. These umpires really have to be at the
- 1:18Speaker 1: top of their game. And again, even you know they
- 1:20Speaker 1: miss some calls, not many calls are being missed by
- 1:26Speaker 1: huge margins, some of them like a tenth of an
- 1:29Speaker 1: inch to two tenths of an inch one or two.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I saw, yeah, I saw one earlier this week where
- 1:33Speaker 1: it was like almost two inches off. But it is.
- 1:38Speaker 1: It is definitely a storyline. The one good thing is
- 1:42Speaker 1: it gets the fans into the game. The fans look
- 1:44Speaker 1: at that center home score of, that center home scoreboard,
- 1:47Speaker 1: that center field scoreboard, and they're on it right away,
- 1:51Speaker 1: especially when the call goes in their team's favor. But
- 1:55Speaker 1: you are right, the ABA system is. Isn't it an issue?
- 2:01Speaker 1: It has made it smart already and we're only seven
- 2:04Speaker 1: eight days.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I believe the Orioles won a game on an ABS.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Challenge, Yes they did.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And I think I asked you this in the playoffs
- 2:11Speaker 2: a couple of years ago. We knew they were gonna
- 2:14Speaker 2: have the extra runner all that I mean, But this
- 2:16Speaker 2: ABS thing, could that really end the World Series? I
- 2:19Speaker 2: can't believe that.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Could be the case. Well, it depends. I mean it could.
- 2:22Speaker 1: In the World Series. The Orioles were up eight to
- 2:25Speaker 1: three when when the call was reversed. It wasn't a
- 2:29Speaker 1: one run game. But can it happen? Of course it can.
- 2:33Speaker 1: But again, if the ABS system shows that it was
- 2:36Speaker 1: a strike or a ball and the umpire blew the call.
- 2:40Speaker 1: The most important thing is that they get it right.
- 2:43Speaker 2: How about that?
- 2:44Speaker 1: I mean replay.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Oh yeah, And it reminds me of tennis, you know,
- 2:47Speaker 2: the way that looks and whether it's in or out.
- 2:50Speaker 2: It's very similar to that.
- 2:51Speaker 1: It's very similar. It's very similar. And I know I
- 2:53Speaker 1: said last week every every pitch would be available for ABS. Now, no,
- 2:59Speaker 1: but I would say more than two challenges. I would
- 3:03Speaker 1: go to four or five. I'll go to four. But again,
- 3:06Speaker 1: we'll see. It's it's still in its infancy. It's brand new.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I like it. I don't think it takes away from
- 3:14Speaker 1: the game. It just has made some umpires who have
- 3:18Speaker 1: probably gotten a little lazy because of the strength of
- 3:21Speaker 1: the Umpires Union that they can't get fired. They might
- 3:25Speaker 1: have to, uh, just be a little bit more sharper
- 3:32Speaker 1: and for their craft. It is their craft. Umpiring is
- 3:36Speaker 1: their craft. They get paid well and they're protected by
- 3:39Speaker 1: one of the strongest unions in the United States, the
- 3:41Speaker 1: Umpires Union, so.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Well. But I also say I'm glad it's in the players,
- 3:47Speaker 2: in the sense of these guys that play. Bosston's t
- 3:50Speaker 2: ball a lot of them, you know that they know
- 3:52Speaker 2: the strike zone, they know what they're looking for, and uh,
- 3:55Speaker 2: you know how many games I go to in Queen's
- 3:58Speaker 2: College where guys were in the college level knew what
- 4:00Speaker 2: they were looking at, you know. So I just it's
- 4:03Speaker 2: in the power of the player too, which is which
- 4:05Speaker 2: is very important as well, I think.
- 4:06Speaker 1: So I think it's a positive thing so far.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Ioed to Rob Gomeanz and the Yankees family for continuing
- 4:15Speaker 2: to welcome me. You know, twenty five years ago Opening
- 4:18Speaker 2: Day two thousand and one, we were at Yankee Sadam
- 4:22Speaker 2: Roger Clemens surpassed Walter Johnson in strikeout lists on the
- 4:27Speaker 2: strikeout list, and mister Steinberner actually took my dad and
- 4:30Speaker 2: night downstairs in the locker room, and I was thinking
- 4:33Speaker 2: about that day to day because it's been a long
- 4:35Speaker 2: time since I was at Opening Day over the years.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Of course, the Matsui Grand Slam, the home opener, I'll
- 4:40Speaker 2: never forget that one either. But you know, it's a
- 4:43Speaker 2: little different in the new stadium. I don't know why,
- 4:45Speaker 2: but it's all spread out and people are walking around.
- 4:48Speaker 2: We're not as condensed as we used to be, you know,
- 4:50Speaker 2: even on opening day. Oh, you're right, but the energy
- 4:55Speaker 2: was electric, I will say, And for a team that
- 4:57Speaker 2: didn't really do any moves in the off season, the
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yankee fans are very loyal and they're very excited. I
- 5:03Speaker 2: think I've not built this excitement in a little bit.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Well again, it's it's only April third. Just if you
- 5:11Speaker 1: want to just jump sports. The New Jersey Devils started
- 5:14Speaker 1: eight to one, and they're not even going to finish
- 5:16Speaker 1: in the eighth spot and make the playoffs. So and
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'm not saying that's gonna happen to the Yankees, because
- 5:20Speaker 1: I think the Yankees have a fought a fine team.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Are you mentioning the Devils? Because Jack Hughes throughout the
- 5:25Speaker 2: first pitch?
- 5:25Speaker 1: Second right? He did? How How I didn't see it.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I didn't see the game. I was out, just got
- 5:31Speaker 1: back a little while ago. How was his first pick?
- 5:34Speaker 2: You know, I was hustling over to make sure I
- 5:36Speaker 2: got Will Warren's first pitch with the opening day logo,
- 5:38Speaker 2: So I didn't really see it myself.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Oh okay, I'll tell you one thing. Jackieves has been
- 5:44Speaker 1: on fire since he got it. Since they took that
- 5:46Speaker 1: and crapped and off his hands just before the Olympics.
- 5:48Speaker 1: He had a great Olympics, and he's been great for
- 5:51Speaker 1: the Devils. It's a shame that, you know, he missed
- 5:53Speaker 1: twenty he's missed twenty three games because they cannot play
- 5:58Speaker 1: without him. I mean, he's got sixty three points in
- 6:00Speaker 1: fifty three games. Great player, great player. Unfortunately, the Devil's
- 6:04Speaker 1: had a one of the biggest disappointments in the NHL season.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I would say that we'll talk hockey in a little bit.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Well, and they just fired Fitzgerald. If I'm not mistaken,
- 6:12Speaker 2: it was that April Foles joke that I saw.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I did not see that. I mean, I know he's
- 6:16Speaker 1: on the hot seat. I mean, if it happened, it happened.
- 6:19Speaker 1: The last five minutes, they have not fired Fitzgerald.
- 6:23Speaker 2: See the AI is getting to me, Louis. It's it's
- 6:26Speaker 2: it's gonna everybody. Actually it's just funny.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's true. Now he now in two weeks
- 6:31Speaker 1: when the season ends, can he be fired? Absolutely? Him
- 6:35Speaker 1: and or Sheldon Key for both, because this team should
- 6:39Speaker 1: not be on the outside looking in. Yes, I know
- 6:41Speaker 1: they lost their best player for you know, a quarter
- 6:44Speaker 1: of the season, but they have a good team. They
- 6:48Speaker 1: shouldn't be in this position.
- 6:51Speaker 2: The Huge Brothers alone, the Huge Brothers alone should be
- 6:54Speaker 2: getting them in that in the contention every year. But
- 6:58Speaker 2: that's that's that's either here.
- 6:59Speaker 1: The I mean, by Opening Day overall, you were, you
- 7:03Speaker 1: were pleased with everything at I.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Was pleased with the game, and I want to give
- 7:07Speaker 2: you trying to rob GOM to the Yankes family again.
- 7:09Speaker 2: But I was pleased with the opening ceremonies and everything
- 7:13Speaker 2: like that. But the one thing I got to say,
- 7:14Speaker 2: and I'm not usually a complainer, but they left the
- 7:17Speaker 2: bases load against the Marlins. I know they won, but
- 7:21Speaker 2: you know you got you get, Judge gets hit and
- 7:23Speaker 2: they load the bases and like score there. I want
- 7:28Speaker 2: to see them a little more shaped up, because look,
- 7:31Speaker 2: they've got a few more games left till they hit
- 7:33Speaker 2: the Al East, and we know, Lou they would be
- 7:35Speaker 2: in tip top shape every Ale East game because there's
- 7:38Speaker 2: only twelve times they face these teams. And I think
- 7:40Speaker 2: now is a great tune up against the Tuna, right,
- 7:43Speaker 2: there's a good one. But no, I don't want to
- 7:45Speaker 2: see them waste the bases load like that, especially against
- 7:47Speaker 2: the Marlins, who might be better. Actually, I think they're
- 7:49Speaker 2: more improved than they've been in the last couple of years.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I think the Marlins are going to be a pain
- 7:54Speaker 1: in the butt for most teams. And I'm not saying
- 7:56Speaker 1: they're gonna, you know, when you know, make the playoffs
- 7:58Speaker 1: go deep or anything like that, but they're gonna be good.
- 8:01Speaker 1: They're not terrible. They're gonna be good. You know. Now,
- 8:05Speaker 1: you took them out to the Al East now, and
- 8:09Speaker 1: it's early, and that's why I'm stressing that it's early here.
- 8:13Speaker 1: That's the point. If we're in Toronto when we're talking
- 8:18Speaker 1: about the Blue Jays who have just lost four in
- 8:20Speaker 1: a row to probably the two worst baseball teams again
- 8:25Speaker 1: this year, the Colorado Rockies that got swept at home
- 8:29Speaker 1: by the Colorado Rockies and they lost today at the
- 8:34Speaker 1: White Sox. So again it's early. You can't jump, you
- 8:40Speaker 1: can't you know, slip your throat if you're a Blue
- 8:44Speaker 1: Jays fan. But they lost four in a row to
- 8:47Speaker 1: two terrible teams. Now I'm not jumping off a Blue
- 8:50Speaker 1: Jays band when I'm not a Blue Jays fan. But my
- 8:53Speaker 1: point is everything is still in its infancy in a season.
- 8:57Speaker 2: You know, it didn't get much playing in New York,
- 8:59Speaker 2: which is kind of surprising. But gotta give a shout
- 9:02Speaker 2: to Peter Lonzo. His first homer is and oriole And
- 9:05Speaker 2: you know what, I'm happy for the guy. Whatever he succeeds,
- 9:07Speaker 2: I'll be happy for him. This is not his fault
- 9:09Speaker 2: that he left New York and I need.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Not his fault at all. And now, you know, you
- 9:13Speaker 1: bring that up and we'll we'll get we'll get into
- 9:15Speaker 1: it right away. Hey, the metsa three and four. Again,
- 9:18Speaker 1: it's it's early. I'm not I'm not going to uh,
- 9:22Speaker 1: you know, Jo, you.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Got another Blue and Orange team you gotta worry about,
- 9:25Speaker 2: lou And.
- 9:25Speaker 1: That's the Islanders. Okay, we'll get to them, and we'll
- 9:28Speaker 1: get to them in a second. And uh, but the
- 9:32Speaker 1: Blue and Orange Mets. And we've talked about this during
- 9:36Speaker 1: the off season. Again, i don't know how good or
- 9:40Speaker 1: how mediocre they're gonna be. I mean, I have no
- 9:46Speaker 1: problem and we said it, you know, we said it
- 9:48Speaker 1: on the podcast during the during the winter. I have
- 9:51Speaker 1: no problem trading Nemo. I just want to trade him
- 9:54Speaker 1: for Marcus Simeon. Now, I'm not saying after seven games
- 9:57Speaker 1: marketing Marcus Simeon is a bust uh years old.
- 10:02Speaker 2: They get that. Some people saying why did they even
- 10:04Speaker 2: trade him? Like I heard some guy on the radio
- 10:05Speaker 2: the other day saying, Uh, it's funny. He's like, why
- 10:10Speaker 2: they are a Simon. They're already bashing uh Simeon And
- 10:14Speaker 2: you just settled into the Met pinstripes.
- 10:16Speaker 1: You know, well again, you know you're out?
- 10:22Speaker 2: Is the point because you're giving him this guy some time.
- 10:24Speaker 2: We and New York never give people time to settle
- 10:26Speaker 2: in the year. You know, you make a very good point.
- 10:29Speaker 2: New York fans should be embarrassed. And I'm not gonna
- 10:32Speaker 2: blame Met fans because it's Met fans, Yankee fans, Jets fans,
- 10:35Speaker 2: Giant fans.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Right down the line. Dante bischett, who has had an
- 10:40Speaker 1: outstanding career, goes one for fourteen. His son Bobet goes
- 10:47Speaker 1: one for fourteen, and uh, he is getting booed at
- 10:51Speaker 1: a city field on Sunday. You can hear it through
- 10:53Speaker 1: to television. When I was watching it, it was clear,
- 10:56Speaker 1: I mean these people, I mean, he has he has
- 10:59Speaker 1: a opt out the end of this year right now,
- 11:03Speaker 1: and it's in his head. Do I really want to
- 11:04Speaker 1: be around the around fans like this. Now again it's early.
- 11:09Speaker 1: He's uh, he should He'll definitely match his baseball card.
- 11:14Speaker 1: He's too good a player. But I I don't like that.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I don't like what the Mets to that second and
- 11:22Speaker 1: first and again, I'm not I know Marcus Simon a
- 11:25Speaker 1: couple of years ago, three four years ago he finished
- 11:27Speaker 1: in the top three of al MVP with the Rangers,
- 11:30Speaker 1: but his last two years have not been good. Offensively,
- 11:33Speaker 1: He's thirty five years old, and uh, defensively, it's supposed
- 11:38Speaker 1: to be an uh an improvement. But all this run
- 11:41Speaker 1: prevention was Pete Alonso, that poor first baseman that.
- 11:51Speaker 2: He was with that I remembering out his struggles a
- 11:54Speaker 2: while ago, but he was starting to really come around
- 11:56Speaker 2: at first Actually well, uh.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Pick in scoop throws. He was the best in baseball
- 12:02Speaker 1: by miles. But I just don't I just don't get
- 12:05Speaker 1: I'm watching the game last night. Viandos is playing first
- 12:08Speaker 1: base and Polonko was designated there, which is what he
- 12:11Speaker 1: should be. It was an error on they charged to Peterson,
- 12:16Speaker 1: but it was a crappy throw from Viento's and if
- 12:21Speaker 1: it was a good throw, it would have been an
- 12:25Speaker 1: out that would have got out of anything two to one. Again,
- 12:27Speaker 1: they lost seven to two. So but my point is,
- 12:30Speaker 1: you go back to you said the Yankees didn't make
- 12:32Speaker 1: much changes and the Mets didn't want to run it back.
- 12:34Speaker 1: And I understand that after the horrible last three months
- 12:37Speaker 1: in the season, after their first great three months in
- 12:40Speaker 1: the season, they want to run back. But I don't
- 12:45Speaker 1: think they've improved themselves at first base, at second base.
- 12:52Speaker 2: That's the answer, Well, Polanco.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I mean, it's all about run prevention, Polanco. Planco up
- 12:58Speaker 1: until this year, had played one game at first and
- 13:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna be honest with you, he looks shaky at
- 13:02Speaker 1: first base when he was playing. He's d h the
- 13:05Speaker 1: last couple of games. So, I mean, the jury's still
- 13:08Speaker 1: out on these changes. But Stern's got outsmarted by the
- 13:17Speaker 1: Dodgers because the DS money wasn't It wasn't because the money. Uh,
- 13:23Speaker 1: he just didn't like Alonso. He just didn't like him.
- 13:27Speaker 1: And uh, we'll see if the Mets have a bad season,
- 13:32Speaker 1: We'll see if Steve Cohen swallows the last three years
- 13:37Speaker 1: of his of Stearns' contract. I mean, I know it's
- 13:41Speaker 1: they stole Nim thirty million dollars at the end of
- 13:43Speaker 1: this year.
- 13:44Speaker 2: But uh, Lou, I'm I've deduced that him and the
- 13:48Speaker 2: jury are just safe. This is gonna be safe for
- 13:51Speaker 2: the rest of the day periods. Okay, I am, I'm
- 13:55Speaker 2: very uh at peace with that right now. And then
- 13:58Speaker 2: you have to be this holy we can go crazy anyway,
- 14:02Speaker 2: especially Drury that whole don't even to start about Chris story,
- 14:05Speaker 2: that whole thing. But no, the Mets and Yankees almost
- 14:09Speaker 2: kind of had identical records. Then things fell off, and look,
- 14:12Speaker 2: I know the other night I was like, boys, you
- 14:14Speaker 2: and Ryan, I said, well, they're they're losing to the Cardinals,
- 14:19Speaker 2: like this is. It's early on, but it shouldn't be
- 14:21Speaker 2: the case. You should not be losing the card.
- 14:23Speaker 1: But we don't know how good the Mets are. The
- 14:27Speaker 1: Mets may not be, may not be a very good
- 14:29Speaker 1: team this year. The only guy I don't know.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Anytime I see a Pirates or a team like that
- 14:35Speaker 2: shut down the line of bas Lindor and Soto, I
- 14:37Speaker 2: am concerned and I think those are legitimate.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Well, well they didn't shut down. So always been tremendous.
- 14:42Speaker 1: He's batt in three fifty for the first seven games.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I'm gonna say something here that might be unthinkable. I
- 14:55Speaker 1: would I would, I think, see, I want to see
- 14:57Speaker 1: how the season goes. I would consider, no, he would
- 15:00Speaker 1: take him because he gets all this money. I would
- 15:03Speaker 1: consider throwing Lindor out there as a potential uh trade
- 15:10Speaker 1: trade B I'm not saying, do it see what you
- 15:12Speaker 1: can get?
- 15:15Speaker 2: Is it just because they're not a good teammates together? Like,
- 15:18Speaker 2: I don't understand what's going on.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Well, all I know is if if Lindordian get picked
- 15:23Speaker 1: off the other night.
- 15:25Speaker 2: What was that? I saw that play?
- 15:27Speaker 1: That was Yeah, I mean, and I get it. He
- 15:29Speaker 1: was trying, he was trying to steal sick and it happens.
- 15:32Speaker 1: But you know, the next bat or sot w it's
- 15:35Speaker 1: a home run which you didn't get picked off. Yes,
- 15:37Speaker 1: I know, the pitching selection would have been different, but
- 15:40Speaker 1: it might have been to run Homer, it might have
- 15:42Speaker 1: been we don't know. We don't know. Like I said,
- 15:44Speaker 1: the pitching selection to Soda would have been different if
- 15:49Speaker 1: Lindor diian't get picked off. So we'll see what will
- 15:53Speaker 1: happen to Mett's a long way Togo. I I just
- 15:56Speaker 1: don't think they I don't like what they did improve
- 16:00Speaker 1: the team. I've never been a Lewis Robert fan. I
- 16:05Speaker 1: know he's had a good week, but I think he's
- 16:07Speaker 1: gonna plateau out. I'm just not a fan of I've
- 16:12Speaker 1: never been a fan of Lewis Robert Jr. I haven't.
- 16:15Speaker 1: And we'll see if one of the boys Sterns made
- 16:19Speaker 1: the right moves.
- 16:21Speaker 2: We'll see we will and I'll tell you, I mean
- 16:26Speaker 2: even today, like I'm still trying to figure out. We
- 16:31Speaker 2: all know his glove is incredible, Ryan McMahon, but that
- 16:35Speaker 2: he's a guy, like so you have second and third,
- 16:37Speaker 2: and he did draw that walk that loads the basis
- 16:39Speaker 2: and Grisham walks to by the way, I've never seen
- 16:43Speaker 2: a stadium cheer over a basis load of walk to
- 16:45Speaker 2: drive in around. I've never heard of that loud bir
- 16:47Speaker 2: a walk before. But hey, maybe we're appreciating small ball
- 16:51Speaker 2: a little bit more. But anyway, man's I'm looking at
- 16:54Speaker 2: the average six point zero sixty seven. I mean, they're
- 16:58Speaker 2: gonna rely on his glove. I guess untill that's the
- 17:01Speaker 2: rider or die, but that bat may not. But they
- 17:04Speaker 2: might just be played eight guys in the lineup. I
- 17:06Speaker 2: had to say it that way, but it looks like that.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Well, he'll hit a little bit, but I mean historically
- 17:10Speaker 1: he's not a great hitter. So I mean, if you
- 17:13Speaker 1: look at the back of his baseball car, he's not
- 17:15Speaker 1: a great hitter. He's an outstanding fielder. And that's why
- 17:18Speaker 1: the the Yankees gone at the trade deadline for run prevention.
- 17:23Speaker 1: And you know, you get back to you were saying
- 17:26Speaker 1: that the Yankees basically make a lot of moves. Maybe
- 17:28Speaker 1: it's good to run it back sometimes, you know, maybe Caviiro.
- 17:33Speaker 2: I know, I know bo't be Italian the whole thing,
- 17:35Speaker 2: but Cavilero's I think a better choice at short right now.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Like he just is fitting in with this team very well.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I see no reason, uh to rush of Wolb back.
- 17:48Speaker 2: I don't. I think Cabrilero's got a handle on it,
- 17:52Speaker 2: and I think he's a real He's a good force
- 17:56Speaker 2: in the lineup. And I love what Ben Race is doing.
- 17:57Speaker 2: You know, Ben Rice is getting a very under appreciate
- 18:00Speaker 2: it right now because of what John Carlo did hitting
- 18:03Speaker 2: all those doubles or multi games for five straight. But
- 18:07Speaker 2: Ben Rice is getting some big hits there, so I
- 18:09Speaker 2: gotta give him appreciation right now. He had the second
- 18:12Speaker 2: homer of the year, but look at the kids coming through,
- 18:15Speaker 2: and maybe he's settled into this role as as their
- 18:17Speaker 2: first baseman, every day guy. I don't know. Yeah, we'll see.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Now I think you I think you're onto something there.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I didn't I underrated Rice. He's better than I thought
- 18:27Speaker 1: he would be.
- 18:27Speaker 2: And I think that's not biased because I met him
- 18:30Speaker 2: and had my picture with him. But you know, it helps.
- 18:32Speaker 1: He's a good kid, so I know, I think that
- 18:35Speaker 1: he's going to be a contributing player to the Yankee season.
- 18:40Speaker 1: And you know, we'll see. But as far as Volpi goes,
- 18:44Speaker 1: when he comes back, they're gonna have to play him
- 18:48Speaker 1: because they don't want to get rid of him via trade.
- 18:51Speaker 1: They got to show other teams that that he's healthy
- 18:57Speaker 1: and that they could that they could they could him
- 19:00Speaker 1: because you know, they have players in the minor league
- 19:04Speaker 1: too who are playing that position.
- 19:07Speaker 2: By way, I think it was wald of Cabrera's and
- 19:09Speaker 2: the miners simply because they need him to to fully recover.
- 19:12Speaker 2: You nobody was excited that he was in the major
- 19:14Speaker 2: leagues for spring training and all that, but that send
- 19:17Speaker 2: down I can understand entirely because he's still recovering from
- 19:20Speaker 2: what happened ten months now, eleven months ago, which is
- 19:23Speaker 2: just that slide was horrendous in Seattle. It was just
- 19:26Speaker 2: a horrible thing that happened, and it was just sure
- 19:29Speaker 2: it was And but you know, I applaud the Yanks
- 19:32Speaker 2: for not rushing him back because he needs that. And
- 19:35Speaker 2: I was there when BOLTI had that awkward slide that
- 19:38Speaker 2: really screwed up the rest of his season in May,
- 19:41Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, this can't be good. Of course,
- 19:43Speaker 2: we didn't find them out until September. Luisa. That's the
- 19:45Speaker 2: injury special with the inks, I like to say. But anyway,
- 19:50Speaker 2: they can't rush him back either. I think you gotta
- 19:52Speaker 2: give him some time. And Cabiro is doing well, but
- 19:55Speaker 2: I don't see him as a filling guy. I think
- 19:57Speaker 2: he should be the everyday guy Calpierro right now, like
- 19:59Speaker 2: he just he's adding to this lineup one way or
- 20:03Speaker 2: the other. So well to see. And then Trent Grisham,
- 20:07Speaker 2: I mean, I think people are gonna expect a lot
- 20:09Speaker 2: of him because he's signed that big deal. You know,
- 20:10Speaker 2: I know it's what a one or two year deal,
- 20:12Speaker 2: but still he's getting a lot of money for what
- 20:15Speaker 2: he's twenty two million, and I think that's a little
- 20:20Speaker 2: pressure right there to be up to the plate every time,
- 20:23Speaker 2: knowing how much you're getting paid for that.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Well, last year he had the big year and he
- 20:27Speaker 1: controlled the option. It was his option. This year, he's
- 20:31Speaker 1: going to be a free agent at the end of
- 20:34Speaker 1: the year, so now the pressure is on him to
- 20:36Speaker 1: perform in his walk year. And he's a good player,
- 20:39Speaker 1: we'll see. I think I don't think he's gonna have
- 20:41Speaker 1: the year he had last year.
- 20:44Speaker 2: But like I don't know, Louis. I hate to say
- 20:46Speaker 2: this way, but in a cruise situation, it is kind
- 20:49Speaker 2: of I don't want to say comical, but it's like
- 20:53Speaker 2: and here now up is Trent Grisham. You know, it
- 20:56Speaker 2: just doesn't feel like the Yankee way. That's what I'm
- 20:59Speaker 2: trying to say is a oh you Yankee fans want
- 21:01Speaker 2: to all start every position typical. Yeah, you're a typical
- 21:05Speaker 2: Yankee fan. But he's a great contributor at the same time,
- 21:09Speaker 2: so it's like, you know, we'll run it back.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I mean, I think they did a good job running
- 21:15Speaker 1: it back. I mean, I think I think Sterns went
- 21:17Speaker 1: way too much the other way.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Someone today, somebody mind intend to me like I was saying,
- 21:23Speaker 2: why Goldschmith's and there, Well, I think gold Schmid's still
- 21:25Speaker 2: a very valuable asset to this team. He hit that
- 21:28Speaker 2: three run homer the other day. Uh, his homer in
- 21:30Speaker 2: Arizona last year helped change the season a little bit
- 21:33Speaker 2: for them as well. He's still valuable. I know he's older,
- 21:36Speaker 2: I know he's like a seasoned vet, but he's still
- 21:38Speaker 2: valuable to this team.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Alex. There was some uh, there was there was some
- 21:44Speaker 1: talk that the Mets might sign Goldschmid because he didn't
- 21:47Speaker 1: sign until very late, would read up with the Yankees.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I would have been very happy with a one year
- 21:52Speaker 1: deal for Goldsmith playing first base after the Mets didn't
- 21:55Speaker 1: sign Alonzo. At least I know he can play the
- 21:59Speaker 1: position to defensively, No, he's not Keith Hernandez defensively, but
- 22:03Speaker 1: he's an experienced first baseman, not putting guys who's never
- 22:07Speaker 1: played at first base before like Polonco. And Polanco is
- 22:10Speaker 1: a pro and he's a good hitter. But I you know,
- 22:13Speaker 1: I don't know if he's going to be the permanent
- 22:14Speaker 1: DH or not. I mean, I think the Yankees actually
- 22:16Speaker 1: did a smart thing by not going crazy and shaking
- 22:21Speaker 1: up the club.
- 22:22Speaker 2: No, I think I think the guys they at least
- 22:24Speaker 2: they didn't lose anybody. That's the other big things. They
- 22:26Speaker 2: didn't lose anybody really from last year. They kept those guys,
- 22:30Speaker 2: which was a big keep as well. So we'll have
- 22:32Speaker 2: to see Louis how it shakes out. But for some
- 22:34Speaker 2: reason at six and one now, Yanks have have had
- 22:38Speaker 2: a better six and one start because they didn't have
- 22:41Speaker 2: to do with homers. Okay, I think they've only hit
- 22:43Speaker 2: like three or four homers or five. You know, it's
- 22:46Speaker 2: not been a lot, maybe like seven at the most
- 22:49Speaker 2: right now, and then we're into game number what eight tomorrow.
- 22:54Speaker 1: And I think, yeah, he'll be a tomorrow.
- 22:56Speaker 2: So I mean, that's not a bad ratio. I'd want
- 22:59Speaker 2: to see them when with doubles and singles and grinding
- 23:02Speaker 2: it out instead of relying on the homer, because you
- 23:04Speaker 2: know what Louis. For all these years we've seen, well,
- 23:07Speaker 2: if they're not a homer, they're not going to win.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Maybe this year is changing that a little bit. We'll see.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Yeah, No, absolutely, I'm very.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Fired up because I want to I'm I'm getting sick
- 23:17Speaker 2: of seeing these teams not winning in October, like it
- 23:20Speaker 2: it's time. We're due.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Well, I mean, we think we're due. But if you're
- 23:31Speaker 1: what about if you're a Cleveland Indians fan will have
- 23:33Speaker 1: them once since nineteen fifty four, you know, so we
- 23:38Speaker 1: can say that we're do or you know, we're a
- 23:42Speaker 1: Detroit Tiger fan, or yeah, we can go down the
- 23:47Speaker 1: line with somebody else.
- 23:48Speaker 2: And at the same time, the guys, who what is
- 23:52Speaker 2: it a three feet for them or two? I think
- 23:54Speaker 2: it's a I mean, the Dodgers have just looked pretty
- 23:57Speaker 2: monstrous already out of the gate. It's yeah.
- 24:00Speaker 1: And and they're gonna they're gonna take their foot off
- 24:03Speaker 1: the gas pelt like they did last year, and that's
- 24:06Speaker 1: what they did. And they're going to give Blake Snell
- 24:11Speaker 1: two weeks off and uh, they're going to baby o'tawny
- 24:15Speaker 1: as far as pitching him, and they're gonna baby the
- 24:18Speaker 1: pitching staff. They'll win the division and then be ready
- 24:23Speaker 1: for the playoffs. And as we saw last year, anything
- 24:26Speaker 1: can happen in the playoffs. Let's face it, the Toronto
- 24:31Speaker 1: Blue they could have easily won. They came within two
- 24:34Speaker 1: aus of winning the World Series before Miguel Ross the
- 24:38Speaker 1: home run on top of the ninth and then uh
- 24:41Speaker 1: they needed one of the great defensive plays in World
- 24:44Speaker 1: Series history and the bomba ninth inning to take at
- 24:46Speaker 1: t extra innings.
- 24:48Speaker 2: So you know it was with Alex It wasn't an
- 24:53Speaker 2: easy win for the Dodgers now, but.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Once you get once you get to the playoffs, anything
- 24:59Speaker 1: can happen. And last week and the gentleman that you interviewed,
- 25:02Speaker 1: it was a very good interview, Am Prefer.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Was that his name, Amteffer? Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 25:08Speaker 1: He said something during that podcast and if any may
- 25:14Speaker 1: want to see it was on YouTube, was very very
- 25:16Speaker 1: interesting that I always agree with. And I'm in the minori.
- 25:22Speaker 1: He said, you know, everybody bases stuff on how many
- 25:27Speaker 1: championships they get, but he's right, it's it's there. You
- 25:33Speaker 1: always have a chance to anything. That team that contends
- 25:37Speaker 1: every year and has an opportunity, whether it's in the
- 25:40Speaker 1: Stanley Cup playoffs, the NBA playoffs, the NFL playoffs, major
- 25:45Speaker 1: League Baseball, that's all you can ask for. And I
- 25:49Speaker 1: definitely agree with with mister Preffer. I mean, I'm not like,
- 25:54Speaker 1: look at Buffalo, they haven't won anything. Yet. They haven't
- 25:57Speaker 1: even gone to the Super Bowl yet, but they're there
- 25:59Speaker 1: every year. And that's all I would want my teams
- 26:03Speaker 1: to be.
- 26:04Speaker 2: And I think most I mean, they may not win,
- 26:06Speaker 2: but their threat I always can see, you know.
- 26:08Speaker 1: But everybody wants their team to be a threat every year.
- 26:12Speaker 2: You know. I think the Pirates. I think you're going
- 26:14Speaker 2: to be surprised. I think the Pirates and the Marlins.
- 26:17Speaker 2: And also, by the way, we've only faced we've only
- 26:20Speaker 2: seen an NL teams right now. The Yankees have only
- 26:23Speaker 2: seen one AL team in three series and UH and
- 26:27Speaker 2: the Mets have not faced AL. They've only UH faced
- 26:30Speaker 2: NL right now. So really we don't have much of
- 26:33Speaker 2: the ALEX to look at right now based in New York.
- 26:35Speaker 2: But what I saw from the Pirates and when I
- 26:37Speaker 2: see from the Marlins, those two teams could come back
- 26:41Speaker 2: a little bit. I could see some some real progress
- 26:45Speaker 2: for the Pirates at least base on what I saw
- 26:47Speaker 2: last weekend.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Louie Well, the Pirates brought up there the major league's
- 26:53Speaker 1: number one prospect yesterday and he started today, Connor Griffin,
- 26:58Speaker 1: shortstop six three twenty pounds. The guy looks like a
- 27:02Speaker 1: looks like a twenty five year old man already I
- 27:05Speaker 1: got a double his first time up against the Orioles.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Say which I think. I think the Pirates held on
- 27:11Speaker 1: to win. They're up for nothing. I think they won
- 27:13Speaker 1: five to three. And they just signed to a nine year,
- 27:17Speaker 1: one hundred and forty million dollar deal, so which also
- 27:21Speaker 1: buys them two more years of his free agency. So
- 27:26Speaker 1: I agree with you. I think the Pirates have a
- 27:28Speaker 1: chance to be better. But the thing is what will
- 27:32Speaker 1: at the trade deadline? Will they go after that guy
- 27:34Speaker 1: to get them into the playffs. Remember this NL Central
- 27:39Speaker 1: is always wide open, just like the AL Central is.
- 27:42Speaker 1: So there's no reason for the Pirates not to try
- 27:44Speaker 1: to win games for their long suffering and loyal fans.
- 27:50Speaker 1: But Connor Griffin and of course schemes are too are.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Too speed of loyalty. Okay, we have the bait, we
- 27:57Speaker 2: have the stay in full. Today in opening day and
- 28:01Speaker 2: someone says to me, because I pointed out, you know,
- 28:03Speaker 2: it's been seventeen years, blah blah blah, She's like, yeah,
- 28:05Speaker 2: it's been seventeen years, and yet the fans keep showing up.
- 28:09Speaker 2: But I'm thinking to myself, but look at the Cubs. Okay,
- 28:11Speaker 2: they won one hundred eight years, and that fan base
- 28:14Speaker 2: shows up every year even during that one hundred eight
- 28:18Speaker 2: year situation. I mean, look, and the Pirates they have
- 28:22Speaker 2: a solid fan base too. So this is why baseball
- 28:27Speaker 2: is not going anywhere, because we still have our fan
- 28:28Speaker 2: bases that are gonna be there.
- 28:30Speaker 1: The thing is, baseball is going to challenge their fan
- 28:34Speaker 1: base for loyalty. If there's a lockout a year from now,
- 28:39Speaker 1: If next April third we are not playing baseball because
- 28:42Speaker 1: of a work stoppage, that's not good. And baseball has
- 28:46Speaker 1: had has had a good last couple of years. They
- 28:50Speaker 1: had a great World Series between a pirate, between the
- 28:53Speaker 1: Blue Jays and the Dodgers, and.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Look, even though they didn't go to the inks way,
- 28:57Speaker 2: I thought that World Series in twenty four was pretty
- 28:59Speaker 2: good too. I have to say, I thought that was
- 29:00Speaker 2: a very interesting World Series, especially Game one setting the
- 29:04Speaker 2: tone for it. I mean, in the Yankee fans, we
- 29:07Speaker 2: all wanted Tim Hill in there. But the quality of
- 29:10Speaker 2: the series and the intrigue has been there two years
- 29:13Speaker 2: in a row. There's no doubt about it.
- 29:16Speaker 1: And then, even though I am no fan of the
- 29:18Speaker 1: World Baseball Classic, there was juice this March with the
- 29:22Speaker 1: World Baseball Classic, there was whether you whether there's you
- 29:26Speaker 1: like the stupid rules or not, or teams telling the
- 29:30Speaker 1: national teams don't pitch my guy more than three innings,
- 29:33Speaker 1: don't pitch them at all, which I think knocks the
- 29:36Speaker 1: credibility of it. But the bottom line is people are
- 29:40Speaker 1: watching it, people connected to it. So if baseball and
- 29:44Speaker 1: they should have another good season this year. But if
- 29:47Speaker 1: Baseball blows it with another work stoppage, you talk about
- 29:51Speaker 1: shooting yourself in the foot, that will be such a
- 29:54Speaker 1: huge black mark on MLB, on Manford, on the play players,
- 30:00Speaker 1: the players Association. Really it's they got to get this done.
- 30:05Speaker 1: They cannot be a work stoppage, cannot.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Be even a two week I mean, we got we
- 30:11Speaker 2: survived that, but didn't I tell you years ago the
- 30:14Speaker 2: way they fumbled through that that covid era was gonna
- 30:17Speaker 2: affect them long term. I feel like that's the case
- 30:20Speaker 2: here because I.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Think there's some truth to that. I mean, the covid
- 30:24Speaker 1: era gave us that dopey free runner in the tenth inning.
- 30:27Speaker 1: You remember that even that sixty game season, when the
- 30:32Speaker 1: season started, that bogus sixty game season, there was no
- 30:36Speaker 1: ghost runner they institute the ghost Runner a couple of
- 30:39Speaker 1: weeks in because the teams had so many players that
- 30:43Speaker 1: were missing games because of COVID, possible COVID contact, COVID
- 30:50Speaker 1: all at all, that nonsense. So you know, So, so
- 30:55Speaker 1: they cannot have a work stoppage next year, and I'm
- 30:57Speaker 1: afraid they're going to that will really hurt Major League Baseball.
- 31:02Speaker 1: But we have a Final four tomorrow night. Yeah, Yukon
- 31:07Speaker 1: with a tremendous.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Pat I think Yukon has it. I feel like they
- 31:10Speaker 2: have the most experience of all these teams right now
- 31:12Speaker 2: in the final four, So I think they have a
- 31:13Speaker 2: chance to really run the table.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Well, I think they have a chance, I really do.
- 31:17Speaker 2: You know.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Somebody who was asking the other day, is the University
- 31:21Speaker 1: of Connecticut a blue blood like Kentucky, like Kansas, like Duke,
- 31:26Speaker 1: like North Carolina, like UCLA? With their history, is Yukon
- 31:31Speaker 1: of blue blood? I definitely say they're blue blood.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Right until I saw they had a ninety nine million
- 31:39Speaker 2: dollar renovation. That's pretty ridiculous too.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Well, apparently they after Duke. They have Their basketball program
- 31:47Speaker 1: is the second highest revenue producer in the country. So
- 31:50Speaker 1: don't feel sorry for Yukon, that's for sure, But I
- 31:54Speaker 1: think Luke A Yukon got a lifeline with that miracle
- 31:59Speaker 1: shot in a Duke game last Sunday, a game Duke
- 32:03Speaker 1: shouldn't never lost.
- 32:06Speaker 2: What are you doing? If you're Duke Duke, you should
- 32:08Speaker 2: have been not bumbling the ball around like that.
- 32:12Speaker 1: You saw them getting nervous, you saw them getting panicky,
- 32:17Speaker 1: and it costs him the game. Now do I think
- 32:22Speaker 1: Yukon has the best roster of the of these final
- 32:25Speaker 1: four teams. I don't, but I think they have the
- 32:28Speaker 1: best coach. Yes, he's a lunatic and his sideline demeanor
- 32:33Speaker 1: is atrocious, and I can't believe he hasn't been suspended
- 32:36Speaker 1: a couple of times, but he's the best coach, and
- 32:40Speaker 1: Alex Caraban is the key. I know he didn't have
- 32:42Speaker 1: a good game against Duke like he did the game
- 32:48Speaker 1: against Michigan State where he was the X factor, But
- 32:53Speaker 1: Alex Caraban, in my opinion, is the key to Yukon.
- 32:57Speaker 1: I know that was playing great, he's playing like a
- 33:02Speaker 1: man possessed. But Caravan he contributed in so many different ways.
- 33:06Speaker 1: He's a four year senior, and I do think in
- 33:09Speaker 1: these games, the more veteran, the more senior team and
- 33:14Speaker 1: which and has a better chance of winning these two games.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Caraban had a great game. He did all the intangibles,
- 33:23Speaker 1: and he had a great game against Fichigan State in
- 33:25Speaker 1: the regional semi final. In the original final against Dukie,
- 33:29Speaker 1: did not have a big game, but he and he
- 33:30Speaker 1: only hit one shot, but that shot game with fifty
- 33:33Speaker 1: seconds to go, and it brought Yukon to within one
- 33:38Speaker 1: and then off the steel. Caraban got the ball to
- 33:43Speaker 1: to Mullins and Mullen and Mullen switched to three from
- 33:46Speaker 1: thirty six to thirty seven feet out and you know,
- 33:49Speaker 1: four tenths of a second ago. I like Yukon. These
- 33:53Speaker 1: are four terrific teams. You can you can like each
- 33:58Speaker 1: and every one of them different way. I like, I
- 34:02Speaker 1: like Yukon tomorrow night, and I think I'm gonna it's
- 34:07Speaker 1: gonna be a tight Michigan and Arizona Arizona game. They're
- 34:11Speaker 1: both great teams. I might give Michigan the edge. They're
- 34:15Speaker 1: a little bit more veteran.
- 34:17Speaker 2: Funny because if it was Michigan Yukon.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Uh.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Has there been a bit Maybe I'm not following as closely,
- 34:24Speaker 2: but has there been a Big Ten Big East matchups
- 34:28Speaker 2: since eighty nine. There has to have been, right, I mean.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Let's see. Well, you know, it's funny you mentioned eighty
- 34:39Speaker 1: nine because it was April third, nineteen eighty nine when
- 34:42Speaker 1: Michigan had that controversial coal go their way at the
- 34:47Speaker 1: end of Beac Hall at eighty to seventy nine.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it was actually the last time a Big Ten
- 34:53Speaker 2: team faced the Big East team was eighty nine, so
- 34:56Speaker 2: this was really historic. Actually, yeah, so that was the
- 34:59Speaker 2: last time.
- 34:59Speaker 1: I mean that that's a game that Seaton Hall deserves
- 35:02Speaker 1: to win, but we don't want to go back thirty six.
- 35:05Speaker 2: And Big Ten hasn't won since two thousand. That's crazy.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Yes, that's a lot. It was Michigan State, right, yes, yeah, yeah,
- 35:14Speaker 1: so they have a long drought. Not in football, if
- 35:16Speaker 1: when three years in a row with three different teams.
- 35:18Speaker 1: But uh yeah, I think I think Yukon, now that
- 35:23Speaker 1: Yukon got a lifeline, they might be a real tough
- 35:27Speaker 1: out tomorrow night and if they win tomorrow night, Monday night.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Now about this perdue faced Yukon, but they were in
- 35:36Speaker 2: the American Athletic at the time in twenty twenty four.
- 35:41Speaker 1: The best thing I have to happened to Yukon bat
- 35:43Speaker 1: Bringing back Yukon basketball is getting back into the Big East.
- 35:47Speaker 1: If they were still in the American Danny Hurley would
- 35:52Speaker 1: not be the coach anymore, Hulcon elsewhere, and who knows
- 35:56Speaker 1: where the Yukon basketball program would be when the Big East.
- 35:59Speaker 1: And don't get me wrong, it helped the Big East too,
- 36:02Speaker 1: but it helped it benefited Connecticut more than it benefiting
- 36:05Speaker 1: the Big East. So but uh, but getting back.
- 36:10Speaker 2: I don't know enough about Illinois to see say they
- 36:12Speaker 2: can beat Yukon only because you and I see U
- 36:15Speaker 2: kind of hell of a lot more than we see.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Uh. Yes, you know, well Keaton, Keaton Wegler, their freshman
- 36:20Speaker 1: guard is really good. Uh you know, sixty six freshman guard,
- 36:25Speaker 1: excellent player. But I like Yukon. I mean, if I
- 36:31Speaker 1: was a betting man and I'm not, I would bet
- 36:34Speaker 1: bet Yukon. So so we'll.
- 36:36Speaker 2: See in Arizona comes close, but then they always seem
- 36:38Speaker 2: to fall apart at some point.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Well, they have a lot of youths and uh so
- 36:46Speaker 1: we'll see if that and they've played thirty seven thirty
- 36:48Speaker 1: eight games, so that youth does have experience. Uh, but uh,
- 36:52Speaker 1: you know, we'll see it'll be it'll be a fun
- 36:54Speaker 1: night tomorrow and I have a fun Final four. And
- 36:58Speaker 1: I guess if we if we just one of you know,
- 37:00Speaker 1: I want to wrap up things here. Uh, we got
- 37:04Speaker 1: to talk about the incredible NHL playoff race in each conference.
- 37:09Speaker 1: I mean, six teams in the East and six teams
- 37:11Speaker 1: in the West are battling for two playoff spots and
- 37:15Speaker 1: they're separated by you know, five or six points. Last night,
- 37:20Speaker 1: the Islanders got a little bit of a break with
- 37:26Speaker 1: Pittsburgh's game in hand in Tampa. Tampa beat them six
- 37:30Speaker 1: to two. But uh, the Islands got six games left,
- 37:35Speaker 1: one of them tonight against Philly, which is on their heels.
- 37:39Speaker 1: They got they got five the elastics at home. But
- 37:45Speaker 1: they gotta win these games. And I don't know if
- 37:48Speaker 1: they're running out of gas. They took a three to
- 37:51Speaker 1: one lead on Pittsburgh the other night, which would have
- 37:54Speaker 1: really put them in good stead, and up three to one,
- 37:58Speaker 1: they had a power play, they gave up a short
- 38:01Speaker 1: handed goal, and they absolutely fell apart, and they left
- 38:05Speaker 1: they left Sorokane out to dry. And this was one
- 38:08Speaker 1: night where Soroken couldn't cover up the mistakes that the
- 38:13Speaker 1: team in front of him was making. And uh, it
- 38:16Speaker 1: just loves to show you how important Sorokin has been
- 38:19Speaker 1: to uh to the islands this year. So we'll see
- 38:22Speaker 1: they're they're in it. I mean, cal Richie is playing
- 38:25Speaker 1: much better. He's another guy, another rookie who's where the
- 38:28Speaker 1: arrow is pointing up. But yeah, we'll we'll see how
- 38:34Speaker 1: they handle this down the stretch. I hope they they
- 38:37Speaker 1: I hope they make it just for the experience party.
- 38:40Speaker 1: This is not a Stanley Cup winning team, but if
- 38:43Speaker 1: they can get in there with the experience, uh yeah,
- 38:47Speaker 1: forget get get shape, some playoff experience. And uh, I
- 38:52Speaker 1: mean the arrow no matter what, whether they make it
- 38:54Speaker 1: or not, the arrow, as we said, the past is
- 38:56Speaker 1: pointing up. Uh you know, and so we'll.
- 39:00Speaker 2: So then again, once you're in you never know what
- 39:02Speaker 2: will happen.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Well again, especially when you have a goalie like Sarroken.
- 39:08Speaker 2: And they have a better team than when they had
- 39:11Speaker 2: And I'm talking about Matt Martin's era the Anders Lee.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Although Lee was hurt those couple of conference championship series,
- 39:19Speaker 2: they weren't the best team out there. I mean I
- 39:21Speaker 2: thought they might be, but I think now they have
- 39:23Speaker 2: a really good team to really make a run if
- 39:26Speaker 2: they get.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know if this team is as good
- 39:28Speaker 1: as that team.
- 39:30Speaker 2: They still haves Barzal and he's always liable, you.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Know, So we'll see they got they got a Nobody
- 39:38Speaker 1: thought that that the Islanders, uh you know, would have
- 39:45Speaker 1: this type of season. Nobody thought they would have eighty
- 39:47Speaker 1: nine points with six games to go. I mean if
- 39:51Speaker 1: if they they have a chance to finish with ninety
- 39:54Speaker 1: seven points, and that may not be good enough to
- 39:56Speaker 1: make the playoffs, which is incredible. So we'll see one
- 40:01Speaker 1: other note in hockey. Two other quick notes. Edmonton. They
- 40:06Speaker 1: lost dry Sidle for the rest of the regular season
- 40:09Speaker 1: a couple of weeks back. They've played better and they've
- 40:13Speaker 1: played different without dry Sitle. I'm not I'm not saying
- 40:17Speaker 1: that's the reasons on him, but.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Uh not on the ice when do we only those
- 40:26Speaker 2: are the two names I ever hear Conor McDavid and
- 40:28Speaker 2: dry Sidle. I don't hear anybody else on that ice
- 40:30Speaker 2: when or Heiman he's another guy here alone.
- 40:32Speaker 1: But but they've played much better defensively. They've tightened up
- 40:36Speaker 1: much more defensively since dry Sidle Uh, got hurt because
- 40:43Speaker 1: with that, you know they were just outscoring people and
- 40:46Speaker 1: that wasn't the beneficial to them. Yes, they're in a
- 40:50Speaker 1: pathetic division, whereas the NHL writers call it the pillow
- 40:55Speaker 1: fight Division. The Ducks have eighty seven points and so
- 40:58Speaker 1: do the Oilers, and the Knights have eighty four. As
- 41:02Speaker 1: we speak, the Ducks have a game in hand. This
- 41:06Speaker 1: is a bonus season for the Ducks. Nobody expect them
- 41:09Speaker 1: to do anything, but my point being non Block he's
- 41:17Speaker 1: a good defensive coach and we'll see if they they
- 41:23Speaker 1: get in. If they get or not. Do I think
- 41:25Speaker 1: they can go back to the finals for the third street,
- 41:27Speaker 1: I don't, but very it's very interesting since dry Style
- 41:33Speaker 1: got hurt that they're playing better and like you said,
- 41:36Speaker 1: they've won five in a row. I'm not blaming dry Style.
- 41:39Speaker 1: I'm not saying dry Sidle is a detriment. Shouldn't be.
- 41:42Speaker 1: It's just how they've changed their style of play and
- 41:45Speaker 1: they're winning games two nothing, three to one. That's not
- 41:49Speaker 1: that's not how Edmonton usually wins, but that's the way
- 41:52Speaker 1: No Block when he first got there, had them playing.
- 41:55Speaker 1: So just something to keep in mine's last two weeks
- 42:00Speaker 1: of the season, so NHL oh and Alex.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Only asked what is what it would be worth going
- 42:06Speaker 2: nearby tickets to the Islanders' Leafs in thinking that that
- 42:12Speaker 2: might be Austin's last game as a Leaf, I'm kind
- 42:14Speaker 2: of curious.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Well, Austin's out for the year, so well.
- 42:17Speaker 2: That's true too, Yeah, exactly. He doesn't even at the tipson, right,
- 42:22Speaker 2: I mean.
- 42:22Speaker 1: No, he he's out for the year, and I think
- 42:27Speaker 1: it's more than it's probably fifty five forty five. He
- 42:30Speaker 1: will never play for the Toronto Maple Leafs again.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Well, tell you they're the most inexpensive ticket to although
- 42:39Speaker 2: I guess the Islanders reversus the Hurricanes are pretty reasonable.
- 42:42Speaker 2: And that's a good one too. It's amazing the Islanders
- 42:45Speaker 2: always draw reasonable ticket prices. I guess maybe it's just
- 42:49Speaker 2: because the Ubs. I don't know exactly, but well.
- 42:52Speaker 1: They when the season ends, they will have sold out.
- 42:55Speaker 1: They will have sold out twenty four straight games. I
- 42:58Speaker 1: think they've sold out. They sold about thirty two games
- 43:00Speaker 1: this year, and that's because the team's playing well and
- 43:04Speaker 1: because of the young phenom. Everyone wants to see that kid.
- 43:07Speaker 2: The wonder boy.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, the NHL regular season will wrap it up.
- 43:13Speaker 1: The NHL regular season is better than the NBA regular season.
- 43:18Speaker 1: The NBA regular season is you know, well we.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Got we gotta talk about that real fast. I mean,
- 43:23Speaker 2: when he looks aside, I wonder about the Luca injury.
- 43:25Speaker 2: That's devastating.
- 43:26Speaker 1: For no, it is devastating. And apparently he was put
- 43:30Speaker 1: back in when the Lakers were down by thirty one
- 43:34Speaker 1: last night. And I don't know why Reddick did that,
- 43:37Speaker 1: but that just exasperated the injury. And now he's out
- 43:41Speaker 1: for an extended period and he's not eligible to win
- 43:44Speaker 1: the MVP. And here's a guy who leaves the league
- 43:46Speaker 1: in scoring, he's up there in assist I think, and
- 43:51Speaker 1: and like fifth in the league and steel. So again,
- 43:57Speaker 1: does the NBA have to look at that sixty five
- 43:58Speaker 1: game rule be eligible for either the first or second
- 44:02Speaker 1: All NBA and for individual awards? I would I would
- 44:07Speaker 1: say maybe yes, they might have to look at that again.
- 44:14Speaker 1: But the reason why the NHL regular season is better,
- 44:18Speaker 1: first of all, the third point. The third point, if
- 44:22Speaker 1: you go to overtime, keeps these teams in the running
- 44:27Speaker 1: for the top eight in each conference longer. That is
- 44:32Speaker 1: really one of the main things and there's no such thing.
- 44:36Speaker 1: There's very few guys in the NBA in the NHL
- 44:40Speaker 1: who get rest match. Yes, there are some maintenance stays
- 44:42Speaker 1: for some plays, I'm not going to say that, but
- 44:44Speaker 1: it's not to the level of NBA plays. And the
- 44:47Speaker 1: maintenance stays for the NHL players usually comes when somebody
- 44:51Speaker 1: is towards the end of his career. NBA players are
- 44:55Speaker 1: sitting out, you know, when they're twenty two years old
- 44:58Speaker 1: and twenty one years old.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Here's Jason Taita literally delivering our triple double and he
- 45:03Speaker 2: just was injured less than a year ago. I mean,
- 45:06Speaker 2: come on.
- 45:06Speaker 1: You know he's done a great job of dedicating himself
- 45:09Speaker 1: to getting back.
- 45:10Speaker 2: So and the other difference between the NHL NBA is
- 45:13Speaker 2: you don't have that in season cup like we see
- 45:16Speaker 2: with the NBA.
- 45:17Speaker 1: I mean, that's just that's that's waste times. I told
- 45:20Speaker 1: you a thousand times. But every every NFL, every NHL
- 45:27Speaker 1: game means something.
- 45:29Speaker 2: And so that's two, you know, I know it's one
- 45:32Speaker 2: hundred and sixty two. But the way the seasons are
- 45:34Speaker 2: going the last few years, with the cutdown of the leagues,
- 45:38Speaker 2: of the indivision teams playing each other, twelve times. N
- 45:43Speaker 2: MMLB is going faster now. I mean we were We
- 45:46Speaker 2: saw those teams facing to other eighteen nineteen times and
- 45:49Speaker 2: be a drag out fight every year. Now it's like
- 45:51Speaker 2: a simulation, almost.
- 45:53Speaker 1: Alex, there's too many interleague games. When he started playing
- 45:56Speaker 1: everybody a couple of years ago, and you know why
- 45:59Speaker 1: you're doing that's for the regis the radical realignment that
- 46:04Speaker 1: is coming. And I've told you that. I told you
- 46:07Speaker 1: that three four years ago. But there's too many interleague games.
- 46:12Speaker 1: I agree with you. I'd rather see more face to face, but.
- 46:17Speaker 2: I'm looking at it right now. Blue Jays, White Tux
- 46:20Speaker 2: Interleague Game number one one, Raise Twins Interleague Game two,
- 46:27Speaker 2: Mariners Angels Interleague Game four, Astros Athletics Interleague Game five.
- 46:34Speaker 2: I mean, so there's about seven or eight of them
- 46:36Speaker 2: that are intro, but a lot of them are inter
- 46:38Speaker 2: you know that's the point.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Yeah, One last thing on hockey Tomorrow night at the
- 46:44Speaker 1: Garden at eight o'clock, the New York Sirens are going
- 46:51Speaker 1: to play at the Garden. The game is sold out
- 46:55Speaker 1: and they're going to be playing the Seattle Parrent. So
- 46:58Speaker 1: let's give a shout out to the UH.
- 47:01Speaker 2: Gold out that I absolutely love it, man, I love.
- 47:04Speaker 1: It, and that that hopefully gives the Sirens a boost.
- 47:11Speaker 1: The Sirens are poorly marketing. Nobody knows that they're even around,
- 47:16Speaker 1: so hopefully playing in the Garden helps them a little bit.
- 47:18Speaker 1: But nobody knows.
- 47:20Speaker 2: That played these women that played in the gold medal
- 47:22Speaker 2: game went back to p WHL teams. I mean, they
- 47:25Speaker 2: weren't just you know whatever. They They're actually professionals that
- 47:29Speaker 2: actually went back to teams after So.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Yeah, no, So hopefully playing at the Garden will give
- 47:35Speaker 1: them a little visibility. I don't think that they're going
- 47:38Speaker 1: to play all their games in the Garden, but if
- 47:39Speaker 1: they even split them between the Garden and Prudential, I think, uh,
- 47:44Speaker 1: that would help. But nobody knows that they're playing at Prudential.
- 47:48Speaker 1: And I know somebody who works in the league, in
- 47:50Speaker 1: the p w h L, and he said they they're
- 47:53Speaker 1: the poorest market team in the league. So hopefully this
- 47:58Speaker 1: gives the New York women's team tomorrow.
- 48:02Speaker 2: That's the other thing, you know, Iowa Hawkeyes, we're on
- 48:05Speaker 2: the map because of Kaitlin. I don't hear about women's
- 48:07Speaker 2: basketball for Iowa. I know they were in the tournament
- 48:10Speaker 2: this year, but you don't hear much about them anymore.
- 48:12Speaker 2: And actually that.
- 48:13Speaker 1: They got a hell of a coach in mc collum.
- 48:16Speaker 1: He's a great coach. And I think you're gonna see
- 48:19Speaker 1: Iowa in the tournament on a regular basis.
- 48:23Speaker 2: I don't know you feel about her. I love Kim
- 48:25Speaker 2: uh from LSU. I think she's a spark plug every game.
- 48:29Speaker 2: That's a fun she's fun to watch his coach on
- 48:31Speaker 2: the sideline. So you know there are reasons doing to
- 48:35Speaker 2: women's sports, that's the part.
- 48:38Speaker 1: Kim Milk, Yes, yeah, yeah. She was a great point guard.
- 48:42Speaker 1: I mean I saw a plaint point guard. She was
- 48:45Speaker 1: terrific point guard and she was a little, you know,
- 48:47Speaker 1: fire plug. And that's how she is as a coach.
- 48:51Speaker 1: And she's been a successful player and she's a successful coach.
- 48:54Speaker 2: So well, I'll say you one great Eastern story about
- 48:58Speaker 2: baseball because I see, well, the Mets were home many
- 49:02Speaker 2: easterns ago. Obviously they go home on they were home
- 49:04Speaker 2: on East sometimes. But the one year they were home
- 49:06Speaker 2: at Easter and I was so ready to go to
- 49:09Speaker 2: the game after church, and as you know, we always
- 49:11Speaker 2: went to Saint John the Divine, so it ties in sports.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Paul Winter, who was a famous uh you know, brass
- 49:20Speaker 2: player for the cathedralis the music director and all that.
- 49:25Speaker 2: I said, oh, what what are you doing this afternoon? Okay,
- 49:28Speaker 2: you know, indeed are gona hang around the yard to
- 49:30Speaker 2: see if we give Chase the peacocks. When I was
- 49:32Speaker 2: a little kid, I said, no, I'm going to a
- 49:35Speaker 2: Met game now, like I was very excited to go
- 49:37Speaker 2: to the Mets after Eastern Services. So there's like sports
- 49:41Speaker 2: story for we've all. Actually that was that Easter Sunday.
- 49:46Speaker 2: We had seen Bob cost Us up in the Yankee
- 49:48Speaker 2: Suite as well, because we went up from Saint John.
- 49:50Speaker 2: We took the D train uptown to the Yankee Stateum
- 49:53Speaker 2: and rolled in and there was Bob Costas. So that
- 49:56Speaker 2: there's another Easter memory for you.
- 49:58Speaker 1: So well, I'll give you a quick Eastern stories. They're
- 50:03Speaker 1: both in hockey. In nineteen eighty seven, the Islands were
- 50:07Speaker 1: down three games to one in the first in the
- 50:10Speaker 1: first round to the Washington Capitals. They tie the series
- 50:17Speaker 1: up three to three. You go to d C, they're
- 50:19Speaker 1: losing by a goal and Trotcha ties it up. The
- 50:22Speaker 1: great Hall of Famer Brian Trotche ties it up with
- 50:25Speaker 1: eight minutes to go in a game, the game goes
- 50:28Speaker 1: to I think quadruple overtime ends at ten to two
- 50:32Speaker 1: on the patlofln Tango Pat Lafontein, another Hall of Famer.
- 50:37Speaker 1: The Islanders win four to three. It's called the Easter Epic.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Then the next I believe it was. The next year
- 50:42Speaker 1: was eighty eight. I believe it was the first I know.
- 50:46Speaker 1: It was the first time the Devil's made the playoffs.
- 50:47Speaker 1: They made the playoffs the last night of the season
- 50:51Speaker 1: in Chicago and they won in overtime, which made and
- 50:56Speaker 1: they made the playoffs for the first time. Lou lamrell
- 50:59Speaker 1: just got there. There was a controversy in a game
- 51:07Speaker 1: in the Stanley Cup game on Eastern Night where Jim
- 51:11Speaker 1: Seanfelt got into a beefoot with the referees. The previous
- 51:15Speaker 1: game got suspended and Lou Lamarello went to get an
- 51:20Speaker 1: injunction against National Hockey League so Shoonfeld can coach. They
- 51:24Speaker 1: won the injunction. Shoonfeld coached the Devils that night and
- 51:29Speaker 1: and the referees and linesmen refused to refuse to go
- 51:34Speaker 1: on the ice and call the game. They had to
- 51:37Speaker 1: get three substitute, uh ref and the two linesmen. In
- 51:43Speaker 1: those days, it was still one referen two linesman. They
- 51:46Speaker 1: hadn't gone to the two and two yet, and they
- 51:48Speaker 1: had him in alternate type of jerseys like yellow like
- 51:52Speaker 1: yellow jerseys. The Devils won the game, they got through
- 51:55Speaker 1: the game, and.
- 51:57Speaker 2: They the NFL is about to do some replacement refs
- 52:00Speaker 2: because there's some situation there too.
- 52:01Speaker 1: So yes, yeah, yeah, those are two Eastern sports memories
- 52:07Speaker 1: that are that I remember so.
- 52:10Speaker 2: And this is why we get Termino's take for for
- 52:12Speaker 2: the nostalgia type of a team.
- 52:14Speaker 1: That's it. That was crazy. The game was delayed like
- 52:18Speaker 1: an hour. Oh it was crazy.
- 52:20Speaker 2: And uh and we've been neglecting. We didn't say tonight.
- 52:24Speaker 2: And by the way, real quick tonight, Genailri. I mean
- 52:27Speaker 2: Yukon women are in the final four, so I mean,
- 52:29Speaker 2: you know, Yukon's very strong, but that yeah.
- 52:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and again I'm not I'm not going to denigrate
- 52:34Speaker 1: the women's final floor four, but there's no competition. It's
- 52:37Speaker 1: a little bit better. There's no competition in women's college basketball.
- 52:41Speaker 1: I haven't watched one second of it. I have no
- 52:43Speaker 1: interest in it. I hate to say that way, but
- 52:46Speaker 1: I don't the same four teams that were in the
- 52:48Speaker 1: final four last year or in the final four this year,
- 52:51Speaker 1: games are sixty five to twelve and a half. It again,
- 52:55Speaker 1: that's just me. And again, I'm all for women athletics,
- 53:00Speaker 1: supporter of women athletes, but the lack of deep competition
- 53:04Speaker 1: in college basketball, women's college basketball.
- 53:07Speaker 2: And you know, Gino agrees with you because he's called
- 53:09Speaker 2: out the NCAA for not providing, you know, much of
- 53:12Speaker 2: an atmosphere for these girls, for these women to play.
- 53:15Speaker 2: So there's that too.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and again, don't get me wrong, He's not a
- 53:18Speaker 1: good coach. He's a fantastic coach. Stalleia South Carolina. She's
- 53:23Speaker 1: not a good coach. She's a fantastic coach. But these
- 53:26Speaker 1: games just don't There's a reason they play the first
- 53:30Speaker 1: and second rounds on on on college campuses, on you know,
- 53:35Speaker 1: the home team campuses, and not at neutral sites because
- 53:39Speaker 1: the interest is not there. I mean, I hate to be,
- 53:44Speaker 1: you know, so blunt about it, but that's the way
- 53:47Speaker 1: it is.
- 53:48Speaker 2: Well, Lou, I'm so glad I caught you. I know
- 53:51Speaker 2: that's a busy Holy weekend for you, So I'm glad
- 53:54Speaker 2: we got a chance to catch up, talk some sports
- 53:56Speaker 2: and thank those in the Yankee family for continuing welcoming,
- 53:59Speaker 2: while like a Balox media that this all conversation was
- 54:02Speaker 2: great and we gotta do this again next week. Well, well,
- 54:05Speaker 2: I guess we'll recap the NCAA Championship because it's coming
- 54:09Speaker 2: Monday night. I can't believe we're they're already.
- 54:11Speaker 1: I can't believe it either, But yes, I'm looking forward
- 54:16Speaker 1: to it. And again, Ukon could have and it's happened before.
- 54:20Speaker 1: I think it's happened. Yes, it's happened before where they
- 54:22Speaker 1: have both the women's and men's college champions and there
- 54:25Speaker 1: has a very good chance that can happen.
- 54:28Speaker 2: And by the way, I mean, I think the NCAA,
- 54:32Speaker 2: if they played, they wait a week till the semifinals
- 54:36Speaker 2: are done with the college football. Then they wait another
- 54:39Speaker 2: week till that next Monday play everything like so close.
- 54:42Speaker 2: I guess you can't really though, but well, first of all.
- 54:45Speaker 1: I want to maximize the TV audience too.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and guys in football need that extra week, I think, yeah,
- 54:51Speaker 2: they need the extra Yeah, I mean they've played a
- 54:53Speaker 2: lot of games. Cool, you know, So all right, Well
- 54:58Speaker 2: that's the other thing we got about it. Next week
- 55:00Speaker 2: is the NFL Draft, because I think the Simpson might
- 55:02Speaker 2: becoming the Jets. We'll have to see what happens there, Louise.
- 55:04Speaker 1: So yeah, I think a lot can happen between now
- 55:06Speaker 1: and between now and April twenty fifth to nine of
- 55:09Speaker 1: the draft, so we'll see, Louis.
- 55:13Speaker 2: I'll put this up first in a bit, but that's
