- 0:02Speaker 1: Coming off the Emmys on Sunday evening. By the way,
- 0:05Speaker 1: Nate Bargotzi did a great job. I didn't watch the Emmys,
- 0:08Speaker 1: but I love Nate Bargotzi and I know he hosted.
- 0:10Speaker 1: It is time to give some awards everybody in the
- 0:14Speaker 1: American League. Let us start with MVP. If you will,
- 0:19Speaker 1: AJ will start with you. Who is your American League
- 0:22Speaker 1: Most Valuable Player?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Who?
- 0:25Speaker 3: And why? My friend?
- 0:26Speaker 2: I mean, I'm just going cal Raley. I've been on
- 0:28Speaker 2: this train bandwagon all year, pretty much since the All
- 0:31Speaker 2: Star Game. Aaron Judge is probably going to win it,
- 0:34Speaker 2: but I think kl ralely deserves some credit. And I
- 0:36Speaker 2: think that at cal Ray with his home run, he's
- 0:39Speaker 2: going to set the all time home run record for
- 0:40Speaker 2: switch hitters. He's already got the all time catcher home
- 0:43Speaker 2: run record. He plays every day. He plays in Seattle
- 0:46Speaker 2: places not great to hit, as you guys have mentioned,
- 0:48Speaker 2: he has to travel so much more than everybody else.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I just think it's a special year, a historic year,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and he should be the guy that wins it because
- 0:55Speaker 2: they're going to go to the postseason and he catches
- 0:57Speaker 2: and he plays every day, and no one can describe
- 1:00Speaker 2: how hard it is to do that. Until you've done.
- 1:01Speaker 1: It, there is not a chance in hell the Seattle
- 1:05Speaker 1: Mariners are where they are without cal Ray. Cal Rawly
- 1:08Speaker 1: means more to the Mariners than Aaron Judge.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Means to the Yankees.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I think the Yankees get into the postseason without Aaron
- 1:14Speaker 1: Judge barely, but they still make it. There are more
- 1:17Speaker 1: stars on the Yankees. Cal Rawley is my MVP, not
- 1:20Speaker 1: that anybody asked, Eric, Who's yours?
- 1:23Speaker 2: Aaron Judge, And it kills me to go against It
- 1:26Speaker 2: kills me to go against cal Raley because of what
- 1:30Speaker 2: he's done, because of what he's done in this historic season.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I think if he even had, you know, if he
- 1:39Speaker 2: had a little bit of an uptick in September here
- 1:41Speaker 2: August September, he could have surpassed Judge, who was really
- 1:46Speaker 2: just relegated to Dhing until a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I think there was a chance that he did that
- 1:52Speaker 2: he catches him. But who wins the award is Aaron
- 1:55Speaker 2: Judge who I want to see win the award because
- 1:59Speaker 2: everything that AJ just said cal Rawley.
- 2:04Speaker 1: You know what's interesting is the last time it wasn't
- 2:07Speaker 1: either Judge or Otani was twenty twenty in terms of
- 2:12Speaker 1: like American League, when there was really controver Yeah, really
- 2:17Speaker 1: really a controversy or a question mark. Cal Raley has
- 2:21Speaker 1: just been so I mean, he'll never have a season
- 2:23Speaker 1: like this again. I mean, Aaron Judge probably have subsequent
- 2:27Speaker 1: seasons of these types of numbers, but cal Rawly will
- 2:30Speaker 1: never have a season like this again. And I feel
- 2:32Speaker 1: like this is again we're like waiting for the Mariners
- 2:34Speaker 1: to implode, because this is always the time of year
- 2:36Speaker 1: that the Mariners implode. Cal Rally has been the most
- 2:41Speaker 1: valuable player for a team, I think in twenty twenty five. Okay,
- 2:45Speaker 1: Cy Young Award winner in the American League, AJ you
- 2:49Speaker 1: have honors.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Go ahead, Schoolble, schoolbl That's it. I don't know if
- 2:54Speaker 2: there's anybody that close. It's it's going to be Schooble again,
- 2:56Speaker 2: and I think it's well deserved. He's going to go
- 2:58Speaker 2: back to back because my answer is exactly the same
- 3:02Speaker 2: as AJS. I want to ask you guys a question
- 3:05Speaker 2: about cal Raley. I know we're skipping back. Does he
- 3:09Speaker 2: get any one does he get any first place votes?
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yes? I mean I don't have a vote.
- 3:16Speaker 2: He definitely shouldn't. I mean, if you're a Seattle writer
- 3:18Speaker 2: or you're a West Coast writer, absolutely should get some.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Votes first place.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I mean, yes, by the way, the thing about Schooble
- 3:26Speaker 2: winning is Crochet's had a really good year and Hunter
- 3:30Speaker 2: Brown has had a really good year. But I just
- 3:31Speaker 2: think Schooble, with what he's done is just has outshined
- 3:35Speaker 2: them all. So I think it's gonna be one, two three,
- 3:36Speaker 2: but I think School is gonna get It won't be
- 3:39Speaker 2: the runaway it was last year, but he was gonna
- 3:41Speaker 2: win again.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I mean, Garret Crochet was in the running for the
- 3:44Speaker 1: triple Crown a decent portion of this season, but that
- 3:48Speaker 1: has fallen off and Schooble has been absolutely unbelievable.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I believe it's Schooble again.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Award for the American League's Top reliever, the Mariano Rivera award.
- 3:59Speaker 3: If you will.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So that's obviously the best reliever in the game in
- 4:03Speaker 1: the junior circuit AJ who is its.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Chapman, the chapman just when fifty straight guys is out
- 4:09Speaker 2: giving up a hit. So to me, it's the oldest chairman.
- 4:11Speaker 2: The year he's had, he's walks her down as e
- 4:12Speaker 2: Ra is barely over one. I think it's the rold
- 4:15Speaker 2: As Chapman Eric, Yeah, I think I think that might
- 4:21Speaker 2: be more runaway than the cy Young. Obviously, I don't
- 4:24Speaker 2: know if we we get to see those tallied votes
- 4:27Speaker 2: like we do with the cy Young, But I think
- 4:30Speaker 2: Chappi's I think Chappie's running away with this awards.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:35Speaker 1: By the way, he's a massive humanity. I mean he
- 4:38Speaker 1: is so in shape, and he's pitching like in reverse.
- 4:41Speaker 1: He's just getting better with age. He looks great, pitching great.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Boston has acknowledged it. They've extended him already. He's had
- 4:49Speaker 1: one hell of a year. Okay, Rookie of the Year
- 4:52Speaker 1: in the National League.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Guys, who is it?
- 4:55Speaker 1: No, you mean the American leg I'm sorry, I Apoloz's.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Nick in Oakland, Jacob Wilson and Nick Kurtz. But it's
- 5:02Speaker 2: Nick Kurtz. I mean, watch this guy play, watch this
- 5:05Speaker 2: guy hit, plus he came on ft he It's I mean,
- 5:08Speaker 2: it's easy. This might be unanimous. I mean it's not
- 5:11Speaker 2: easy of a Rookie of the Year voting Jack Wilson.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Hopefully Jack Wilson gets to at least or Jacob Wilson sorry,
- 5:18Speaker 2: gets to at least like touch the trophy because until
- 5:22Speaker 2: Nick Kurtz came up, like Jacob Wilson was like, oh
- 5:26Speaker 2: this is mine, I'm locking this thing up. He was
- 5:28Speaker 2: going to hit, you know, he got hurt, but he
- 5:30Speaker 2: was going to hit like three thirty on the year.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Then he kind of declined. But Nick Kurtz running away
- 5:37Speaker 2: with it. I think he's going to be higher in
- 5:39Speaker 2: MVP voting than people would have thought he would have
- 5:42Speaker 2: been two weeks ago.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Even I hate the fact that he's on such a
- 5:47Speaker 1: crappy team because it's just so difficult to give an
- 5:50Speaker 1: award to a guy that's on a crap team. It's
- 5:52Speaker 1: not his fault, it's not his fault at all. I
- 5:53Speaker 1: would have loved if Roman Anthony had been called up
- 5:56Speaker 1: sooner in the year, and I would have loved even
- 5:58Speaker 1: more if Roman Anthony didn't have an bleak issue, because
- 6:01Speaker 1: I think Roman Anthony could have very well been the
- 6:03Speaker 1: American League Rookie of the Year.
- 6:04Speaker 3: But I too am giving it.
- 6:05Speaker 2: To It's tough what Kurts has done. It's tough. Not
- 6:08Speaker 2: over Kurtz is ridiculous this year.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Well, I watched watching it.
- 6:18Speaker 2: You like the Red Sox of Roman Anthony is nice,
- 6:21Speaker 2: like to the point where the way he plays and
- 6:24Speaker 2: he can play a solid outfield, maybe he might have
- 6:27Speaker 2: a chance of being hired in the MVP voting later
- 6:30Speaker 2: in their careers. But what Nick Kurtz has done, like
- 6:35Speaker 2: when people go up and look in those numbers, He's
- 6:37Speaker 2: got over a thousand ops as a freshman in the league.
- 6:42Speaker 2: It is amazing.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I hear you. I just wish I could
- 6:46Speaker 1: have seen Roman Anthony play the length of time that
- 6:49Speaker 1: Nick Kurtz has played this year, and I wonder if
- 6:51Speaker 1: the conversation would have been every different. Not to take
- 6:53Speaker 1: away anything from Nick Kurtz by any stretch, but I
- 6:55Speaker 1: wonder what Anthony could have done over a more extended
- 6:58Speaker 1: period of time.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Come Back Player of the Year.
- 7:00Speaker 1: We discussed this a little bit earlier in terms of
- 7:02Speaker 1: American Comeback Player of the Year, American League Comeback Player
- 7:05Speaker 1: of the Year. Who do you guys think it is?
- 7:09Speaker 2: It's Jacob deGrom. Jacob deGrom. He's been through so many
- 7:12Speaker 2: injuries and it's Jacob Degron. This is pretty easy for me.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Jacob de Gron, Hey, aj is it Jacob de Gram?
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yeah, we've already had this conversation. So guess what is
- 7:24Speaker 2: Jacob p Gron?
- 7:27Speaker 3: All right, Eric, is it Jacob de Gram?
- 7:30Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with Jacob deGrom.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Okay, so we have established it's Jacob de Grom who pitched.
- 7:37Speaker 2: I wonder where he's gonna end up. I wonder where
- 7:41Speaker 2: he's gonna end up on the sy Young voting. I mean,
- 7:44Speaker 2: I think Evaldy was going to get was going to
- 7:46Speaker 2: get a lot of cy Young votes. Obviously, he's been
- 7:50Speaker 2: out the last he'll be out, you know, the last
- 7:52Speaker 2: over a month of the season, so that'll hurt him.
- 7:55Speaker 2: But he had blow a two era for de Gram
- 7:58Speaker 2: to come back and do what he's done comeback. Player
- 8:01Speaker 2: of the Year is a lock. I want.
- 8:06Speaker 1: You guys know how bad I wanted Nathan Evaldi to
- 8:08Speaker 1: sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers of Los Angeles. I
- 8:12Speaker 1: love Nathan Evaldi, I love everything.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Where was he gonna play? They didn't have any roster spots.
- 8:18Speaker 3: That's not true.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I'm talking before the Glass now, signing, before the Snell signing,
- 8:22Speaker 1: all that stuff.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I love Valdi? All right, So is it Jacob Degarom?
- 8:26Speaker 3: Fair enough?
- 8:27Speaker 4: All right?
- 8:27Speaker 1: Manager of the Year in the American League A J Who.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Is it John Schneider, John Schneider, Who is deserving of it?
- 8:39Speaker 2: That's just going to get it and deserving because remember
- 8:41Speaker 2: what they went through last year and all, and they listen,
- 8:44Speaker 2: he's on the hot seat. We all talked about this.
- 8:46Speaker 2: He was on the hot seat before this year, and
- 8:48Speaker 2: here they are. They're gonna win the AL East, and
- 8:49Speaker 2: they're gonna win it pretty easily. They got a chance
- 8:52Speaker 2: to make a deep runt. So for me, it's John Schneider.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I mean he was on the hot seat in the
- 8:55Speaker 1: middle of this year. It wasn't even just coming into
- 8:58Speaker 1: the season. It was in the middle of this year.
- 9:00Speaker 1: He was on the hot seat. Now look at where
- 9:01Speaker 1: they are.
- 9:01Speaker 3: AJ. Do you agree excuse me, Eric, do you agree
- 9:04Speaker 3: with that?
- 9:06Speaker 2: I do? And I think if the team had done
- 9:08Speaker 2: this the last two seasons when they missed the playoffs,
- 9:12Speaker 2: I don't think he would have won it because there
- 9:14Speaker 2: was a lot of expectations of like, this team is
- 9:16Speaker 2: really good, they're gonna win. Oh they fell short, they
- 9:19Speaker 2: fell short. And now this year everyone kind of like
- 9:23Speaker 2: tempered their expectations. And I think they're three games up
- 9:26Speaker 2: on the Tigers for the best record. Yeah, so on
- 9:29Speaker 2: my first ever Roomy in Pro Bowl victory. I don't
- 9:33Speaker 2: even know if you get like a cool trophy or not.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I forget.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Hopefully they have some incentives in their contract that if
- 9:40Speaker 1: they become manager of the Year you get some cash.
- 9:42Speaker 1: That's the only trophy I need. I'm gonna go with
- 9:44Speaker 1: aj Hanch. And the reason I say that is I
- 9:46Speaker 1: understand that Schneider will likely get it because he what
- 9:50Speaker 1: he's done with the team, obviously because he was on
- 9:52Speaker 1: the hot seat, and also because he manages in the
- 9:55Speaker 1: Al East and people pay attention to the Al East
- 9:57Speaker 1: way more than they pay attention to the Ales Central.
- 9:59Speaker 1: But what aj Hinch is done with a Tiger's team
- 10:03Speaker 1: that's pretty much been in the lead of things, or
- 10:05Speaker 1: at least in the conversation of the lead of things
- 10:07Speaker 1: wire to wire of this season, you got Hobby Bias
- 10:10Speaker 1: playing out of his mind. Obviously, having Trek Schouble as
- 10:13Speaker 1: your ace helps. But what aj Hinch has done with
- 10:15Speaker 1: that team, to me warrants a lot of consideration for
- 10:19Speaker 1: Manager of the Year in the American League.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Is he going to get it?
- 10:23Speaker 4: No?
- 10:24Speaker 1: Do I think he has a good reason to get it. Sure,
- 10:26Speaker 1: So I'm gonna go with Hinch.
- 10:30Speaker 2: That's fair. I can see that he's a he's a
- 10:32Speaker 2: nice fellows.
- 10:35Speaker 3: It's not the Good Guy Award of the Year. It's
- 10:37Speaker 3: a Manager of the Year.
- 10:38Speaker 1: All right, Let's check out one of AJ's Ruby packs
- 10:41Speaker 1: he pulled. AJ, did you buy or sell as far
- 10:44Speaker 1: as Arena Club and Pokemon?
- 10:47Speaker 2: Do you think I know what a Pokemon thing is?
- 10:50Speaker 2: Do you know what that thing is? Exactly? So I
- 10:54Speaker 2: did it. I got this. It's a I don't even know,
- 10:57Speaker 2: but I got. I got more money than I paid
- 10:59Speaker 2: for It's a more Zapto's Articuna g X guard and
- 11:04Speaker 2: so I sold it right away. So yeah, I got
- 11:08Speaker 2: more money than I paid for it. So I was like,
- 11:10Speaker 2: sell now, it's not Pokemon, it's not Pokemon.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Pokemon, oh, Pokemon. I apologize.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Poky Man, it's closer to Pookey Man. I like Pooky Man,
- 11:23Speaker 2: but it's Pokemon. And that's a GX. Anybody knows. Anybody
- 11:27Speaker 2: knows it's a g X.
- 11:29Speaker 3: It's not true because A J and I are anybodies
- 11:32Speaker 3: and we didn't know.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Do you guys, remember I was thinking about this the
- 11:35Speaker 2: other day, You guys, remember a couple of years ago.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I was a while now when they had the Pokemon
- 11:38Speaker 2: Go and people were walking around on their phones and
- 11:41Speaker 2: they were like running into like stuff. They were like, oh,
- 11:44Speaker 2: driving into stuff. There's might be a fake thing over
- 11:48Speaker 2: there in the corner. What would you do, Alana? Do
- 11:51Speaker 2: you remember garbage You remember garbage pail kids?
- 11:54Speaker 4: Courts?
- 11:55Speaker 3: I remember garbage pail kids. It's the Cabbage Patch Kids,
- 11:58Speaker 3: ugly cousins.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yes, if I can, if I get in a garbage
- 12:02Speaker 2: if I can get a garbage pale Kid card in
- 12:05Speaker 2: my arena club, that would be boss. I gotta see
- 12:07Speaker 2: if I can rip one of those packs, because you know,
- 12:10Speaker 2: I got packs of them laying around here.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Because I saw there's garbage pail kids in arena.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I went to somewhere and they had them for sale,
- 12:18Speaker 2: and I bought a bunch. It was somewhere, and I
- 12:20Speaker 2: got like Adam Bomb large, large, Marge large. Yes, Adam
- 12:28Speaker 2: Bomb is my favorite.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Yes, I had six Cabbage Patch kids, you guys.
- 12:33Speaker 4: I was.
- 12:33Speaker 3: I was into it. I was into it.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I was into adoption way like a long time ago.
- 12:38Speaker 1: See and now I just rescue puppies.
- 12:39Speaker 2: But that's a whole other Ironically, my cabbage patch kid.
- 12:43Speaker 2: His name was Buddy and he was bald.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Ironically, maybe he was actually your kid.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Right now, you can get twenty percent off your first
- 12:55Speaker 1: lap pack or card purchase by going to arenaclub dot
- 12:58Speaker 1: com slash fall and use cod foul All right, guys. Next,
- 13:01Speaker 1: Josh Barfield is joining us. Always great to have front
- 13:07Speaker 1: office brass joining us on Foul Territory. That is Josh Barfield.
- 13:11Speaker 1: We thought he was going to be wearing a quarter zip.
- 13:14Speaker 1: We were wrong. It is a polo instead, Josh. Great
- 13:17Speaker 1: to be with you, White Sox Assistant GM. According to
- 13:20Speaker 1: Mark finesand a source saying that you're staying with the
- 13:24Speaker 1: Pale Hose, sir, not going to the Orioles. Tell us
- 13:27Speaker 1: more about that decision to stay where you're at.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Welcome to the show.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Yeah, thanks for having me on. It's good to see
- 13:32Speaker 5: you guys. And yeah, I'm here. I'm staying with the
- 13:35Speaker 5: White Sox. I'm really happy. This has been a great
- 13:38Speaker 5: situation for me and my family since day one, from
- 13:41Speaker 5: Jerry to Getzi all the way down. You know, they
- 13:44Speaker 5: treated us, treat us so well, and I'm really excited
- 13:47Speaker 5: about what we're building here.
- 13:48Speaker 4: You know, we're in a you know, we are in
- 13:50Speaker 4: a rebuild.
- 13:51Speaker 5: You know last year was tough in the first year
- 13:53Speaker 5: over here, and you know, going through the aches and
- 13:55Speaker 5: pains of setting me all the time and the losing record.
- 13:57Speaker 5: But you know, I feel like we're heading in the
- 14:00Speaker 5: right direction right now. We have a lot of good
- 14:02Speaker 5: things happening, a lot of young guys coming up having success. Uh,
- 14:06Speaker 5: you know, the minor leagues, we have guys continuing to
- 14:08Speaker 5: uh make big strides down there, and it just feels like, uh,
- 14:12Speaker 5: there's a lot more optimism than there's been here in
- 14:14Speaker 5: the last couple of years. And the guys are playing
- 14:15Speaker 5: better baseball, especially here, you know, post All Star breaks.
- 14:19Speaker 4: So it's been exciting.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I was the one that thought you were going to
- 14:22Speaker 2: be wearing a quarter zip. But do you at least
- 14:25Speaker 2: have khakis on? Like, are you like full scout mode
- 14:28Speaker 2: because you got like you got khakis and a collared shirt.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Is that is that what you're going with up in
- 14:32Speaker 2: Chicago now.
- 14:33Speaker 5: I'm not a khaki guy. I did that the first
- 14:36Speaker 5: year on I was scouting. I'm not a khaki guy.
- 14:38Speaker 5: It's usually like some nice jeans or or some Travis
- 14:41Speaker 5: Matthews slacks in a in a in a polo. There
- 14:44Speaker 5: is there is a quarter zip hanging up in my office.
- 14:47Speaker 5: But it's yeah, it's not all It's not not cold
- 14:49Speaker 5: enough yet.
- 14:50Speaker 2: I wouldn't think I wouldn't think you would completely sell out.
- 14:52Speaker 2: But since a Lona brought it up, I want to
- 14:54Speaker 2: hit I want to hit on the whole. Orioles like
- 14:57Speaker 2: GM search type of thing we talk about all the time,
- 14:59Speaker 2: and we actually kind of gave the White Sox a
- 15:02Speaker 2: little bit of a of a hard time for not
- 15:05Speaker 2: going outside of the organization getting Getsy Getsy went outside
- 15:10Speaker 2: of the organization to bring you in. When you go
- 15:12Speaker 2: and do an interview with the Orioles, how much do
- 15:15Speaker 2: you feel like you have to and I don't know
- 15:18Speaker 2: how far in the process you got that you have
- 15:20Speaker 2: to not give all the White Sox secrets away, but
- 15:24Speaker 2: also get some information from another organization that is now
- 15:29Speaker 2: like three years ahead of the White Sox in the
- 15:32Speaker 2: sense that like they rebuild for a while and now
- 15:34Speaker 2: they have a bunch of talent in the big leagues.
- 15:36Speaker 2: How much of that do you have to like, I
- 15:39Speaker 2: don't know, like balance and like go through when you're
- 15:42Speaker 2: in those negotiations or interview in every rooms.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's a good question. We didn't get that far.
- 15:50Speaker 5: You know, they reached out with interest. You know, we
- 15:53Speaker 5: talked here internally with Getsy and with Jerry, and also,
- 15:58Speaker 5: you know, my family wanted to make sure you got
- 16:00Speaker 5: to keep mama happy.
- 16:02Speaker 4: So we talked about it for a while. But and
- 16:04Speaker 4: then just got back to them and let them know
- 16:05Speaker 4: that I didn't want to hold them up in.
- 16:07Speaker 5: Their search, and I just didn't feel like it was
- 16:09Speaker 5: the right right time right now. It's obviously a great
- 16:10Speaker 5: situation over there. They're doing a lot of really good things,
- 16:12Speaker 5: and Alias is a you know, he's done so much
- 16:15Speaker 5: in this game, you know, But just didn't feel like
- 16:18Speaker 5: it was the right right time and really want to
- 16:20Speaker 5: be here to see this thing through.
- 16:23Speaker 2: All right, Mart, Like we played together in twenty eleven,
- 16:26Speaker 2: you were an intense player, Like you would run dudes
- 16:30Speaker 2: over harder. And you're not a big guy, no no offense,
- 16:33Speaker 2: but you would hammer dudes at the play. So I
- 16:35Speaker 2: know your competitiveness as much as you were the first
- 16:39Speaker 2: one out of the clubhouse every single day. That's a
- 16:41Speaker 2: different story. How do you take that, how do you
- 16:44Speaker 2: take that into your job when you come over to
- 16:49Speaker 2: the White Sox and you're like, Okay, well might not
- 16:52Speaker 2: win a lot of games. How do you take that
- 16:54Speaker 2: competitiveness out of it but also instill it in the
- 16:59Speaker 2: guys in youranization, the coaches, in the organization, the everything,
- 17:03Speaker 2: because I know how intense you were, and I don't
- 17:06Speaker 2: think you can just turn that off.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Yeah, you're right, you can't turn it off, right. We're competitive.
- 17:12Speaker 5: I think that's why so many of us play this game.
- 17:13Speaker 5: And I think that's the thing you missed the most
- 17:15Speaker 5: when you.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Get done playing.
- 17:17Speaker 5: It's that competing and I think that I get to
- 17:19Speaker 5: scratch that itch on this side. And yeah, going through
- 17:21Speaker 5: a rebuild, you you lose a little bit of the
- 17:24Speaker 5: day to day competitiveness, but it's still that you're trying
- 17:27Speaker 5: to keep up with other organizations. You're trying to you
- 17:29Speaker 5: still want to win every day, right, You still go
- 17:31Speaker 5: out there and you want to win, and knowing that
- 17:34Speaker 5: you might be behind the eight ball some nights. But
- 17:38Speaker 5: you know, I think the group that we have here
- 17:41Speaker 5: from Getsy from Will coming over his first year as
- 17:43Speaker 5: a manager, Paul Yannish, our farm director. It's a lot
- 17:46Speaker 5: of guys that are playing backgrounds and we all want
- 17:49Speaker 5: to compete.
- 17:49Speaker 4: We all want to.
- 17:50Speaker 5: Instill that in our players. I think it starts from
- 17:52Speaker 5: the day they get into the organization. You know, we
- 17:55Speaker 5: just have draft recently. We find the guys out to
- 17:57Speaker 5: Arizona and we do go through the orientation.
- 18:00Speaker 4: We talked about doing winning things, playing winning baseball, and
- 18:03Speaker 4: you guys know, like on a given night you might
- 18:05Speaker 4: not win, but you could play winning baseball. And there's
- 18:07Speaker 4: a there's a brand of.
- 18:07Speaker 5: Baseball that we want to uh, you know, we want
- 18:10Speaker 5: to show up every night and play for our for
- 18:11Speaker 5: our team, for our fans. And you know, I think
- 18:13Speaker 5: you're starting to see that with some of these young guys,
- 18:15Speaker 5: and uh, you know, hope to continue to build on that.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Josh who makes the decisions on some of these trades
- 18:22Speaker 2: that you guys have to make? Is it? Is it
- 18:24Speaker 2: a team effort? Who goes through the prospects and says, hey,
- 18:27Speaker 2: we're going to trade Garrett Crochet for Kyle Teal on
- 18:29Speaker 2: my draw and that whole package? Who is that you?
- 18:33Speaker 2: Is that gets is it? Who who exactly is in
- 18:37Speaker 2: charge of all the trades that you guys have made?
- 18:40Speaker 5: Yeah, And in the end it gets you. But I
- 18:42Speaker 5: think you know, he's done a good job of surrounding
- 18:44Speaker 5: himself with a lot of a lot of good people.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Uh.
- 18:47Speaker 5: I think one of his biggest strengths is that he's
- 18:50Speaker 5: very open to information and he filters it and in
- 18:53Speaker 5: the end he comes out and makes the you know,
- 18:55Speaker 5: the best decision possible for the organization. But uh, you know,
- 18:58Speaker 5: it's it's a it's a group here. I think one
- 19:00Speaker 5: of the things that he does really well too. It's
- 19:02Speaker 5: not a lot of secrets. It's not a lot of hey, guys,
- 19:05Speaker 5: get out of here. You know, the big guys are talking.
- 19:06Speaker 5: It's everybody's got a piece of it. It's a lot
- 19:10Speaker 5: of collaboration here. And you know, in the end, we're
- 19:12Speaker 5: trying to use the information. We were trying to use
- 19:15Speaker 5: our knowledge of our guys to make the best decisions possible,
- 19:18Speaker 5: you know, not only for the short term, but we
- 19:20Speaker 5: want to build a consistent winner here. And we know
- 19:22Speaker 5: that takes time and that takes talent, and you know,
- 19:24Speaker 5: I think if you look back at the Crochet deal,
- 19:26Speaker 5: it's so far it's kind of been a win win.
- 19:28Speaker 4: For both both sides.
- 19:29Speaker 5: You know, Crochet, we knew he was we were trading
- 19:32Speaker 5: away one of the best pictures, if not the best
- 19:34Speaker 5: picture in the game, and you know that that's got
- 19:36Speaker 5: to come at a high price. And you know, we
- 19:37Speaker 5: felt like the Red Sox we were able to get that,
- 19:40Speaker 5: you know, the return we were looking for there.
- 19:41Speaker 4: And you know, all four guys have been three of
- 19:44Speaker 4: them have contributed at the major.
- 19:45Speaker 5: League level this year, and you know you got another
- 19:47Speaker 5: one that's not too far away and Braden Montgomery.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Josh, that's a.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Great question or a great point that you make, and
- 19:53Speaker 1: it actually leads me into my next question. Obviously, you're
- 19:56Speaker 1: hoping you get some massive gain in return for a
- 19:59Speaker 1: guy like a Garrett Crochet. But when you're watching Crochet
- 20:02Speaker 1: on the hill now for the Red Sox every fifth
- 20:04Speaker 1: day and you see the success that he's having, he's
- 20:07Speaker 1: in the conversation for the Cy Young Award, what goes
- 20:10Speaker 1: through your mind, Like, man, that guy could be on
- 20:12Speaker 1: our hill, Yet you know you had to trade him
- 20:14Speaker 1: for a reason. Kind of take me through that balance
- 20:16Speaker 1: of being an assistant GM and watching him have that success,
- 20:20Speaker 1: but knowing you guys feel like you made the right choice.
- 20:23Speaker 5: Yeah, we knew what we were giving up when we
- 20:25Speaker 5: traded him, Like we got to see it really it
- 20:27Speaker 5: started in spring training last year when we made the
- 20:29Speaker 5: switch to him being a starter, and it was one
- 20:32Speaker 5: of his first outing I think it was against the Dodgers,
- 20:33Speaker 5: and he just absolutely mowed through, you know, three future
- 20:36Speaker 5: Hall of Famers, And from that point on, it was like,
- 20:39Speaker 5: this is real and this guy is going to be
- 20:41Speaker 5: a good starting picture for a long time, you know,
- 20:43Speaker 5: as long as he stayed healthy.
- 20:44Speaker 4: And he's done a really good job of that.
- 20:45Speaker 5: But knowing where we were as an organization, we really
- 20:48Speaker 5: needed to jump start it and we needed to add
- 20:50Speaker 5: as much talent as we could. And being able to
- 20:53Speaker 5: add for you know, impact players, even though you're giving
- 20:56Speaker 5: up one of the top players in the game, you know,
- 20:57Speaker 5: we felt like it was a really good return and
- 21:00Speaker 5: it allowed us to fill a number of holes with
- 21:01Speaker 5: one one bullet.
- 21:04Speaker 2: When he said he wanted to be extended when he
- 21:06Speaker 2: was traded at the end of the year or at
- 21:07Speaker 2: the trade deadline last year, did that send a ripple
- 21:11Speaker 2: through the front office trying to like make trying to
- 21:14Speaker 2: like navigate that with him and with possible trade opportunities.
- 21:21Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, it was a unique situation and I
- 21:24Speaker 5: get it. You know, he's trying to do and his
- 21:26Speaker 5: representation is trying to do what's best for him long term.
- 21:29Speaker 5: And we love the guy. I mean, he helped this
- 21:32Speaker 5: organization a ton. He was a pro while he was here,
- 21:34Speaker 5: just a really likable guy on and off the field.
- 21:37Speaker 5: So you know, there was no like ill Will once
- 21:40Speaker 5: that came out, and I ultimately, I don't think it
- 21:42Speaker 5: really changed too much.
- 21:44Speaker 4: And you know, in the end, I'm glad he was
- 21:45Speaker 4: able to get his extension. But the guy's a gamer.
- 21:48Speaker 5: You know, he wanted to take the ball even if
- 21:50Speaker 5: we wanted to shut him down last year at any point, like,
- 21:53Speaker 5: he wasn't having that, and he just wants to be
- 21:56Speaker 5: out there and pitch. And you know, now you're getting
- 21:58Speaker 5: to see it on the big stage in a big
- 22:00Speaker 5: which is great for him.
- 22:02Speaker 2: And you already get to see the returns from that trade.
- 22:05Speaker 2: So it's pretty decent. Kyle Tiele and Colson Montgomery are
- 22:09Speaker 2: just the like tip of the iceberg for you guys.
- 22:12Speaker 2: That's awesome for the White Sox. Your journey as a player, now,
- 22:17Speaker 2: most people don't know they need to baseball reference you.
- 22:19Speaker 2: You came out hot, you came up, you were a prospect.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Your son of a you know, former All Star Jesse Barfield,
- 22:27Speaker 2: Like there was a lot behind you. So your journey
- 22:30Speaker 2: culminated in playing in the Atlantic League and independent ball
- 22:34Speaker 2: playing with me in twenty eleven, Like, there were so
- 22:37Speaker 2: many things. What part of your journey as a player
- 22:41Speaker 2: helps you the most now as an assistant GM or
- 22:45Speaker 2: even as a player development guy like you were with
- 22:47Speaker 2: the with the Diamondbacks, or as a future GM.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I think all of it.
- 22:52Speaker 5: Really, It's really hard to pinpoint one of it because
- 22:54Speaker 5: I think I can relate to a lot of different people, right,
- 22:57Speaker 5: I can relate to the you know, the Colson and
- 23:00Speaker 5: the Braidens, and the guys that are coming up with
- 23:01Speaker 5: a lot of hype and you know, dealing with those expectations,
- 23:05Speaker 5: and then at the same time, I can deal with
- 23:06Speaker 5: the guys on the back side of it, right, the
- 23:07Speaker 5: guys that are grinding trying to make it back. The
- 23:10Speaker 5: guys that you know, we the boozers, the guys like
- 23:13Speaker 5: that that you went the indie ball route and then
- 23:15Speaker 5: made their way back to the big leagues, and just
- 23:17Speaker 5: understanding what what you go through with the ups and
- 23:19Speaker 5: downs of it. Like there's so much information in today's
- 23:22Speaker 5: game is great, and we use that in a lot
- 23:24Speaker 5: of our decisions, but also understand understand the human factors
- 23:27Speaker 5: that go into it and being able to relate to
- 23:29Speaker 5: players and to communicate with players to get the information
- 23:33Speaker 5: to them that we want.
- 23:34Speaker 4: So yeah, I wouldn't. I wouldn't trade any of my
- 23:37Speaker 4: journey for for where I You know, it helped me get.
- 23:40Speaker 5: To where I am now, and I think it's going
- 23:42Speaker 5: to help me continue as I move forward in this game.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Bar I told you I'd keep it real, and I
- 23:47Speaker 2: told you if I had the video, we would show it.
- 23:51Speaker 4: There's no way you have that video.
- 23:53Speaker 2: So in twenty eleven, I'm gonna set the stage here
- 23:56Speaker 2: it is so we can just we can we can
- 23:57Speaker 2: just watch it.
- 24:00Speaker 3: I can someone.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Explain what's happening please, Like we need a better setup
- 24:04Speaker 1: than just Josh running through the water.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Oh well, there was there was awesome music. There was
- 24:12Speaker 2: There was awesome music to it. And sorry for everybody
- 24:14Speaker 2: on the pot, we were just silent for you. But basically,
- 24:17Speaker 2: Josh Barfield needed a little extra cash. He was on
- 24:21Speaker 2: his own in Triple A, and some of our good
- 24:25Speaker 2: buddies Jeff Larish, Delwyn Young, tag Bose aid challenged bar
- 24:33Speaker 2: two walk on water run across the fountain?
- 24:36Speaker 4: Was that Buffalowtown Buffalo? It was cold out too.
- 24:41Speaker 2: It was free. It's always cold in Buffalo. Or it's July.
- 24:44Speaker 2: One of the two ed Josh Barfield needed a little
- 24:48Speaker 2: bit of money, So my guy, but Josh Water.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Josh, why didn't you take off your socks? There's nothing,
- 24:56Speaker 3: nothing worse than what sucks? So why didn't you take
- 24:58Speaker 3: off the socks?
- 25:00Speaker 4: I mean, why did I do any of this, especially
- 25:03Speaker 4: knowing that there was cameras on me.
- 25:08Speaker 2: This was when we still had This is when we
- 25:10Speaker 2: still had flip phones. But you know, like now, maybe, hey,
- 25:14Speaker 2: you pay your minor leaguers a little bit better now,
- 25:16Speaker 2: don't you, so they don't have to be doing this
- 25:18Speaker 2: kind of stuff.
- 25:19Speaker 5: We feed them better, a higher minor league minimums now.
- 25:22Speaker 5: So yeah, and there's social media, so guys are a
- 25:24Speaker 5: little smarter now. We didn't have social media back then,
- 25:26Speaker 5: so you didn't have to worry about that stuff resurfacing
- 25:30Speaker 5: the video.
- 25:31Speaker 2: The video is courtesy of Jeff Larish, otherwise known as
- 25:36Speaker 2: Statue one of the one of the Toledo mud Hens
- 25:39Speaker 2: slash Detroit Tiger Great Prospects. Hey, Josh, can you give
- 25:47Speaker 2: us White Sox fans an update on Smith and Schultz
- 25:49Speaker 2: and Bradon Montgomery while we're at it, where they're at
- 25:53Speaker 2: and what their season went like and what the prospects
- 25:56Speaker 2: are possibly for next year.
- 25:58Speaker 5: Yeah, so you know those through the bigger name coming
- 26:00Speaker 5: into the season, and uh, you know, we start.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Off with with Braiden.
- 26:03Speaker 5: You know, Braiden coming off the ankle injury in college
- 26:07Speaker 5: that finished the season and probably.
- 26:08Speaker 4: Calls him to fall back a little bit in the draft.
- 26:10Speaker 5: He was somebody that we were really excited and we
- 26:12Speaker 5: even considered taking it five two years ago, and.
- 26:15Speaker 4: We wanted to, you know, get his feet.
- 26:17Speaker 5: Wet, so we started them in the low way to
- 26:18Speaker 5: start the year. I let get his fet underneath him
- 26:21Speaker 5: because he hadn't played in quite a while. And you know,
- 26:23Speaker 5: once he hit his stride, you know, he he really
- 26:25Speaker 5: took off. He had a great year, finished up in
- 26:27Speaker 5: Double A, had success at all three stops, and got
- 26:31Speaker 5: hit in the foot.
- 26:32Speaker 4: So he's out right now. He finished the season on
- 26:34Speaker 4: the I L. But he's going to be back for
- 26:37Speaker 4: the Fall League. So we're excited about seeing him.
- 26:39Speaker 5: Uh, you know, gets a better competition and uh, you know,
- 26:43Speaker 5: Hagen and Hagan and Noah, Uh, two nasty left handed pitchers,
- 26:47Speaker 5: two guys that were really excited about. You know, I
- 26:49Speaker 5: saw a lot of minor league baseball this year, and
- 26:52Speaker 5: I put their stuff up against you know, anybody. You know,
- 26:55Speaker 5: there was there was some bumps along the way this year. Uh,
- 26:58Speaker 5: namely the control. I got a got away from them
- 27:00Speaker 5: at times this year, but you know, the stuff never
- 27:03Speaker 5: suffered that.
- 27:04Speaker 4: These guys miss a lot of bats.
- 27:06Speaker 5: You know, they have a history of throwing strikes, so
- 27:08Speaker 5: we know we'll get back to more consistency there.
- 27:11Speaker 4: But we're really excited about them.
- 27:12Speaker 5: And you know, with with no finishing Triple A and
- 27:15Speaker 5: Hagen finishing Double A and you know, both those guys
- 27:18Speaker 5: UH slated to go to the Fall League, you know,
- 27:20Speaker 5: we're excited about getting additional looks at them and you know,
- 27:23Speaker 5: hope to see them at some point next year.
- 27:25Speaker 2: All right, Well, who's the one prospect, one person in
- 27:28Speaker 2: the organization that people might not know about that you're
- 27:31Speaker 2: really excited about. A prospect?
- 27:33Speaker 5: Wise, Uh, I'm gonna give you two's because it's hard
- 27:38Speaker 5: to hard to split them up. Cale Bonmer, guy that
- 27:42Speaker 5: we took last year, I believe with our second pick.
- 27:46Speaker 5: I believe and I don't even know if I'm supposed
- 27:48Speaker 5: to say this yet.
- 27:48Speaker 4: I think he was just named the MVP of the league.
- 27:53Speaker 4: You know, really excited about him.
- 27:54Speaker 5: Tremendous athlete, really physical, uh you know, played it, played
- 27:59Speaker 5: a strong short stop up and offensively, just really held
- 28:02Speaker 5: his own in the consistency from a guy that young
- 28:05Speaker 5: in his first full season. As you guys know, there's
- 28:07Speaker 5: an adjustment that comes with your first full season, especially
- 28:10Speaker 5: for a high schooler.
- 28:11Speaker 4: It was really really impressive what he was able to
- 28:14Speaker 4: do this year.
- 28:15Speaker 5: And then you know, Antonachi, he's another guy that we
- 28:17Speaker 5: took last year, you know, not as heralded as some
- 28:21Speaker 5: of these other guys, but the year he's been able
- 28:23Speaker 5: to put together has been nothing short of like amazing.
- 28:27Speaker 5: I mean, he's finished in Double A. He had over
- 28:30Speaker 5: eight hundred ops this year. He's going to go to
- 28:33Speaker 5: the Fall League. He's another guy that's not very far off,
- 28:35Speaker 5: and it's going to continue to get more and more
- 28:37Speaker 5: press as you know, as he continues to rise up
- 28:40Speaker 5: the ranks, and he's another guy that you could possibly
- 28:42Speaker 5: see it at some point next year as well.
- 28:44Speaker 2: All Right, Josh, for I let you go as a
- 28:46Speaker 2: White Sox fan, I'm raring my white suck shirt for
- 28:48Speaker 2: you guys.
- 28:48Speaker 4: I love it, guys. And yeah, you're a legend around here.
- 28:51Speaker 5: There's not a day that goes by that I don't
- 28:53Speaker 5: see a Prazinski jersey in the stands.
- 28:55Speaker 4: It's pretty impressive.
- 28:56Speaker 2: He's always one. There's always one, Josh. So let me
- 28:59Speaker 2: let me it's good and bad. But before I let
- 29:02Speaker 2: you go, I got to ask you this question. Gets
- 29:03Speaker 2: came out recently said Jerry's gonna let you spend next year.
- 29:06Speaker 2: So how much were talking We're talking like a couple
- 29:09Speaker 2: of million. Are we talking like enough to make this
- 29:11Speaker 2: team decent next year where we can talk about contending.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's to be determined. Right.
- 29:17Speaker 5: We haven't had those conversations yet. You know those will
- 29:20Speaker 5: be upcoming here as we're you know, winding the year down.
- 29:22Speaker 5: But you know, either way, I do expect this team
- 29:26Speaker 5: to continue to, you know, make make strides. We saw
- 29:28Speaker 5: it from last year this year and you know, with
- 29:30Speaker 5: this young group, especially some of these guys getting their
- 29:32Speaker 5: first taste of it this year, they're going to be
- 29:34Speaker 5: a little bit more established and settled in another wave
- 29:36Speaker 5: coming in behind them next year. You know you hope
- 29:39Speaker 5: the Aero continues to trend in the right direction.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Josh, we appreciate it.
- 29:44Speaker 1: I'm glad you don't have to run through any sort
- 29:46Speaker 1: of buffalo fountains with socks on or not.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Good luck this upcoming season.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Really it's off season as you guys get ready to
- 29:54Speaker 1: get set for the twenty twenty sixth year.
- 29:56Speaker 3: We appreciate you taking the time to be with us.
- 29:59Speaker 4: Thank you, thank that's have me on great seen you mhmm.
