- 0:29Speaker 2: Journa Glory podcast live on YouTube. Hunter Arberniki.
- 0:36Speaker 3: By myself right now, might be getting Austin or Dack
- 0:38Speaker 3: to join later. Here we are talking Big Ten preview
- 0:45Speaker 3: this morning and going through not every team but some
- 0:50Speaker 3: of the key teams here in the Big Ten. Figured
- 0:53Speaker 3: this is a good time to do it here before
- 0:55Speaker 3: we get closer to the huskers first game against Ohio.
- 1:03Speaker 2: And here's how we're gonna do this today.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I think it makes sense to try to break the
- 1:09Speaker 3: Big Ten up into tiers and talk that way, and
- 1:15Speaker 3: tiers might be different. I'm not setting a cap or
- 1:18Speaker 3: a limit on the number of tiers, but well, we'll
- 1:22Speaker 3: start right at the top here for our Tier one,
- 1:27Speaker 3: and I have three teams in this tier. I think
- 1:32Speaker 3: maybe you could argue there's a fourth, but the three
- 1:37Speaker 3: that I think everybody probably knows and thinks of here
- 1:41Speaker 3: one being Indiana, two being Ohio State, and three being
- 1:44Speaker 3: organ and in no particular order here Indiana and Organs
- 1:50Speaker 3: win total is both at ten and a half in
- 1:51Speaker 3: Ohio State's at nine and a half.
- 1:54Speaker 2: We'll start with.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Indiana obviously winning the College Football Playoff last year, going
- 1:59Speaker 3: six tea O. In Kurt Signetti's second year, He's heading
- 2:04Speaker 3: into his third season with Mike shanahanas OC and Bryant
- 2:11Speaker 3: hayneses DC. They're staff stuck together. The big question here
- 2:16Speaker 3: is going to be their quarterback. Bringing in Josh Hoover.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Can he live up or at least do something similar
- 2:23Speaker 3: to what Fernando Mendoza did a year ago? And I
- 2:27Speaker 3: think that the big piece in takeaway here is a
- 2:31Speaker 3: year ago.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Nobody knew Mendoza was gonna do what he was gonna do, So.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I mean, I gotta believe in trust Signetti is gonna
- 2:40Speaker 3: do that with Josh Hoover here, and if he saw
- 2:44Speaker 3: something in Josh Hoover, yeah, I think I think it's
- 2:47Speaker 3: fair to say you can trust Signetti at this point.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I do think for me, I want to see Signetti
- 2:53Speaker 3: do it another year. I think he's obviously a very
- 2:55Speaker 3: good football coach, but for him to go down as
- 2:59Speaker 3: maybe one of the all time legends, I think he
- 3:03Speaker 3: needs to do this another year and and maybe not
- 3:06Speaker 3: win it. But just be competitive, uh and also make
- 3:11Speaker 3: make the Cultutball Playoff, which again with with what with
- 3:15Speaker 3: what they got and and who they are, it's crazy
- 3:17Speaker 3: for me to say this now, but.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I think they should be able to do it.
- 3:23Speaker 3: And it's another reload year, but it's reload for everybody,
- 3:27Speaker 3: uh for for Indiana, and.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I think I think they'll think they'll be back in
- 3:31Speaker 2: the playoffs. So Oregon.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Is a team that everybody's really liking this year, and
- 3:39Speaker 3: I've heard them getting picked to win it all. They
- 3:44Speaker 3: have a lot of talent, specifically if you were listening
- 3:47Speaker 3: to Dylan Royola, they have a lot of talent, more
- 3:49Speaker 3: than Nebraska. Obviously, we knew that last year they lost
- 3:54Speaker 3: in the semi final two Indiana and didn't just lose,
- 3:58Speaker 3: but it just got absolutely destroyed head coach Dan Lannings
- 4:03Speaker 3: in his fifth year. They're still chasing. Oregon's still chasing
- 4:08Speaker 3: their first national title.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Believe it or not.
- 4:12Speaker 3: We know Dante Moore is one of the Heisman favorites
- 4:14Speaker 3: out there in Eugene. They brought in Mackai Hughes, the
- 4:19Speaker 3: running back from Tulane, UH and and we know the
- 4:23Speaker 3: story of Dylan Royola, and they added a solid backup.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I I you know, you don't think of most college
- 4:32Speaker 3: football teams having a two deep quarterback roster that you
- 4:35Speaker 3: feel good about.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I think Oregon has that.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I think the question you know for them is going
- 4:44Speaker 3: to be, is Dante Moore one of, if not the
- 4:49Speaker 3: best quarterback in the country and will we live up
- 4:53Speaker 3: to that hype? Uh?
- 4:55Speaker 2: And will that lead Oregon to up a national title
- 5:01Speaker 2: this year?
- 5:01Speaker 3: Where a lot of people think, and myself included, I
- 5:04Speaker 3: think they have the potential to do it this year.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Nebraska obviously goes on the road to.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Eugene right after Indiana, so back to back games.
- 5:15Speaker 2: And then the last team.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Here in this tier, in the heavyweight tier, I'm calling
- 5:18Speaker 3: it is Ohio State that.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Nebraska also plays them, so yeah, we knew we play
- 5:25Speaker 2: all three of these teams.
- 5:27Speaker 3: I think Ohio State, just as fair as the other
- 5:30Speaker 3: two have, has potential here to make a run and
- 5:33Speaker 3: also win at all. They lost the Big Ten title
- 5:38Speaker 3: game last year, ended up losing in the quarterfinals to Miami.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Last year, Ryan Days in his eighth season. They bring
- 5:48Speaker 3: back quite a few players. Julian Sayan comes back, Jeremiah
- 5:55Speaker 3: Smith comes back. I think, you know they bring in
- 5:59Speaker 3: Arthur smith Off as a coordinator from the Steelers and
- 6:03Speaker 3: then also the Falcons in the NFL. Matt Patricia is
- 6:06Speaker 3: still here at DC. Again, I think if you, if you,
- 6:11Speaker 3: if you're polling hairs, all three of these teams can
- 6:13Speaker 3: can have potential there to be at the top.
- 6:15Speaker 2: And I think Ohio State's.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Big game early part of the year is going to
- 6:21Speaker 3: be going to Texas and seeing if they can win
- 6:25Speaker 3: that one they won last year fourteen to seven in
- 6:29Speaker 3: that whole scoring game at home. You know, can they
- 6:33Speaker 3: go on the road and win that game early. If
- 6:35Speaker 3: they lose that game, it's I don't think it's a
- 6:37Speaker 3: big deterrent for the rest of the year. They they
- 6:43Speaker 3: also have a very talented roster, but their schedule also
- 6:47Speaker 3: is very tough, which is why that win totals down
- 6:49Speaker 3: there at nine and a half. The fun part is
- 6:52Speaker 3: about these teams is all three of them play each other.
- 6:56Speaker 3: On October seventeenth, Ohio State travels two Indiana, and then
- 7:01Speaker 3: they host Oregon on November seventh.
- 7:04Speaker 2: So.
- 7:06Speaker 3: At least Ohio State plays both of them. Oregon and
- 7:08Speaker 3: Indiana do avoid each other. I think it'll be interesting
- 7:11Speaker 3: to see how that plays out before we get to
- 7:12Speaker 3: the Big Ten title game.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Okay, going down to Tier two here, I will say.
- 7:19Speaker 3: This is my like could make the playoffs if they
- 7:22Speaker 3: have a good year, but they need to prove it
- 7:26Speaker 3: to be in there. We have a lot of these
- 7:28Speaker 3: win totals being here at eight and a half and
- 7:30Speaker 3: seven and a half, I think for me, Penn State
- 7:34Speaker 3: is in this tier. They went just seven and six
- 7:38Speaker 3: last year, hiring Matt Campbell. Matt Campbell be coming from
- 7:42Speaker 3: Iowa State. This is basically Iowa State with some additions.
- 7:48Speaker 3: I think is what the headline is here. Rock Oebec
- 7:52Speaker 3: from Iowa State falls over, which I think is important.
- 7:55Speaker 3: You know, when a first ye're having a quarterback that
- 7:57Speaker 3: you're comfortable with, you know, the question for him is
- 8:02Speaker 3: going to be can't can Campbell and then win right
- 8:05Speaker 3: away at a new uh. Iowa State obviously is a
- 8:08Speaker 3: Power five school, But this is this is the next
- 8:10Speaker 3: step up. This is Penn State. This is one of
- 8:13Speaker 3: the powerhouses, power four teams. You know, this this this
- 8:19Speaker 3: nine and three is that is that?
- 8:20Speaker 2: Okay?
- 8:21Speaker 3: I think Penn State will take that after last year,
- 8:23Speaker 3: but I think I think they have a very high
- 8:26Speaker 3: expectation here, especially given what they're going up against with
- 8:32Speaker 3: those teams in that first tier. I have USC next
- 8:37Speaker 3: year with Lincoln Riley, who, believe it or not, is
- 8:42Speaker 3: still never made the college Football Playoff.
- 8:45Speaker 2: He is in his fifth season.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I think if you were to ask anybody going into
- 8:50Speaker 3: his fifth season how many times Lincoln Riley would be
- 8:53Speaker 3: in the playoff, they would have said more than zero.
- 8:56Speaker 2: So he's got a little bit of pressure here.
- 8:58Speaker 3: They did go nine and four last year after you know,
- 9:01Speaker 3: losing to TCU in the Aliva Bowl. I they just
- 9:06Speaker 3: they need to make an appearance, need to be relevant again.
- 9:08Speaker 2: I think that's what USC fans are wanting.
- 9:10Speaker 3: You know, anything anything less than an eight and four,
- 9:13Speaker 3: nine to three season, I think you're gonna be seeing
- 9:17Speaker 3: some people calling for Lincoln Riley's head. Michigan brings in
- 9:25Speaker 3: Kyle Whittingham and his first year from Utah.
- 9:31Speaker 2: They get rid.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Of Sharon More, Bryce Underwood is back. Michigan is one
- 9:36Speaker 3: of these teams for me that is not getting talked.
- 9:39Speaker 2: About a lot. They do return quite a bit.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Bryce Underwood was a very big hot topic going into
- 9:46Speaker 3: the offseason last year and is getting very little to
- 9:49Speaker 3: none this season.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I think Michigan.
- 9:53Speaker 3: The good thing they have going for him is they
- 9:55Speaker 3: brought in a coach that to me defines Michigan football
- 9:59Speaker 3: like winning he him and what he did at Utah
- 10:02Speaker 3: ran the ball a lot, very old school like that
- 10:05Speaker 3: to me is what Michigan's strength is. It's what their
- 10:07Speaker 3: identity is, and I think winning him fits that very
- 10:11Speaker 3: very well. Their big game in the non conference is Oklahoma,
- 10:16Speaker 3: as they get a host of them early on in
- 10:19Speaker 3: the year. I think for Michigan, is it gonna click?
- 10:25Speaker 3: Is things gonna work out? Just like Campbell at Penn State.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Is this gonna work.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Out here right away in year one?
- 10:32Speaker 3: I think it could. I'm pretty high on them. I'm
- 10:36Speaker 3: glad we don't play them. They do have to go
- 10:39Speaker 3: to Oregon into Ohio State and they also play Penn
- 10:42Speaker 3: State at home.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Like the schedule is.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Not easy by any means, so I get why that
- 10:48Speaker 3: win toll is at seven and a half, But I
- 10:50Speaker 3: still think there's a lot of talent on this roster.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I think they play with.
- 10:52Speaker 3: A very tough and gritty identity.
- 10:55Speaker 2: So I'm big on Michigan.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Michigan here, I do like their over seven and a half,
- 11:01Speaker 3: even though they have those tough games. I think they're
- 11:03Speaker 3: gonna beat Oklahoma, and I think getting Iowa and Penn
- 11:07Speaker 3: State at home is good for them. Speaking of tough,
- 11:12Speaker 3: gritty football.
- 11:12Speaker 2: And we don't want.
- 11:14Speaker 3: To have to talk about this team too long, but
- 11:18Speaker 3: the Iowa Hawkeys here they are again, another nine and
- 11:22Speaker 3: four season, eight and four in the regular season. They
- 11:24Speaker 3: take down an SEC team that rose last year in
- 11:29Speaker 3: Vanderbilt in the rely re questival. Yes, Kirk Farns is
- 11:32Speaker 3: still back in his twenty eighth season as the Iowa
- 11:38Speaker 3: head coach. Offensive coordinator Tim Lesters is in his third year.
- 11:43Speaker 3: He came home from Western Michigan a few years ago,
- 11:45Speaker 3: and I think that things have gone well for Iowa.
- 11:49Speaker 3: And I shouldn't say well they've gotten better because it
- 11:52Speaker 3: couldn't have got worse for Iowa football in their offense,
- 11:55Speaker 3: but it's gotten better for them since Tim Lester was
- 11:59Speaker 3: hired and Phil Parker backs this twenty fifth season as
- 12:03Speaker 3: defensive coordinator.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Here's the funny thing about Iowa.
- 12:10Speaker 3: They lost all three offensive linemen to the NFL, and
- 12:15Speaker 3: their biggest question mark comes in on the offensive line.
- 12:21Speaker 3: I'm guessing that they will reload fine, that's what Iowa does.
- 12:25Speaker 3: If there's any place where they can identify talent, it's
- 12:28Speaker 3: on the offensive line. And the question mark every year
- 12:34Speaker 3: for Iowa is I guess it is every year, But
- 12:38Speaker 3: it doesn't really matter is who's their quarterback.
- 12:41Speaker 2: I don't think it matters.
- 12:42Speaker 3: And they bring in Jeremy Hecklinsky and Hank Brown are
- 12:50Speaker 3: the two guys competing here for the quarterback position.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Again, I don't know that it really matters.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Because i what does what they do and they continue
- 13:03Speaker 3: to win eight or nine game by doing what they do. Uh,
- 13:06Speaker 3: it's never pretty and it's pretty annoying, especially when you're
- 13:09Speaker 3: an a Raska fan.
- 13:10Speaker 2: But that's Iowa.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Next in this in this tier, and this is still
- 13:14Speaker 3: my playoff chasing tier is Illinois and Brett Beilama in
- 13:22Speaker 3: his sixth season.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Helen Champagne last year.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Also went eight and three or eight and four of
- 13:29Speaker 3: the regular season, beat Tennessee and the Music City Bowl.
- 13:33Speaker 3: And there's another one of these teams that has an identity.
- 13:37Speaker 3: And I think that the big thing here in year
- 13:40Speaker 3: six is Belama sent a little bit of a new
- 13:43Speaker 3: expectation here for Illinois and and and really raise the
- 13:50Speaker 3: floor if you would say that they They're not expecting
- 13:54Speaker 3: to make the playoffs by any means, but they are
- 13:56Speaker 3: expecting to make a Bowl game and win six seven
- 13:58Speaker 3: games every year. Their schedule, they do get a host
- 14:03Speaker 3: a lot of these games, which is which is nice.
- 14:05Speaker 3: They play Ohio State and Oregon both at home. They
- 14:08Speaker 3: played Duke in the non conference. Cayden Hauser arise as
- 14:14Speaker 3: the quarterback from East Carolina and he used to be
- 14:17Speaker 3: at Michigan State. He's got some experience there at quarterback
- 14:21Speaker 3: and it looks like that it could fit belom A
- 14:24Speaker 3: system very very well. And then the last team I
- 14:27Speaker 3: have in this tier, and you could maybe argue they
- 14:29Speaker 3: could have been higher in this list, but is Washington,
- 14:32Speaker 3: and I like to label them as the quiet chaos team.
- 14:35Speaker 3: They they aren't getting and they haven't gotten a whole
- 14:39Speaker 3: lot of chocolate. I think they have the talent and
- 14:41Speaker 3: the potential here with Demon Williams.
- 14:44Speaker 2: To be kind of a disruptor here in the Big Ten.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Yeah, Nebraska, we get him at home on Halloween, so
- 14:50Speaker 3: we have definitely have something to say about that and
- 14:53Speaker 3: can shut that out.
- 14:54Speaker 2: But Washington could be a very sneaky good team here.
- 14:59Speaker 3: In the Big Ten. And their schedule is pretty favorable.
- 15:02Speaker 3: They play Oregon, they pay play Penn State, and then
- 15:06Speaker 3: they obviously play at UCLA.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Out there as well.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I think if they really build around him on Williams,
- 15:15Speaker 3: it could look really good. I think it's a similar
- 15:17Speaker 3: story to Nebraska, where if he's having to do everything,
- 15:22Speaker 3: I think it could be a problem.
- 15:24Speaker 2: But they have the potential there.
- 15:26Speaker 3: To really I think, make some noise in this tier
- 15:30Speaker 3: and in the Big Ten Conference, so I do.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I did put six teams in.
- 15:34Speaker 3: The second tier, which I think may or may not
- 15:39Speaker 3: be fair, but the third tier here I guess I
- 15:44Speaker 3: also have five teams in this tier. I mean, this
- 15:46Speaker 3: is where I'm putting Nebraska, and then they get no
- 15:51Speaker 3: particular order here. I think you could argue any of
- 15:55Speaker 3: these teams could be above the others. I'm not gonna
- 15:59Speaker 3: talk a lot about us because we have another podcast
- 16:02Speaker 3: Minnesota I have in this tier, and I'm gonna I
- 16:06Speaker 3: am gonna say they're ahead of its because they kicked
- 16:08Speaker 3: their butt last year. They went They'd go eight and five,
- 16:12Speaker 3: beat New Mexico in the in the Rate Bowl.
- 16:15Speaker 2: PJ Fly like another coach that.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Is just it has had Matt Rules in Nebraska's number
- 16:22Speaker 3: for quite some time now.
- 16:23Speaker 2: He's in his tenth season. Uh.
- 16:27Speaker 3: They bring back Drake Lindsay at quarterback and Darius Taylor,
- 16:31Speaker 3: one of the Big Ten's top running backs heading in
- 16:34Speaker 3: to next year. He Drake Lindsay's talking Drake Lindsay, He's
- 16:43Speaker 3: not a guy that needs to be a top quarterback
- 16:47Speaker 3: in the Big Ten. I don't think he even has
- 16:50Speaker 3: that potential. But again, it's similar to me like Iowa.
- 16:54Speaker 3: I think Minnesota is a a They're not Iowa, but
- 16:57Speaker 3: they're like a modern version of Iowa.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Uh bye bye.
- 17:02Speaker 3: They do a lot of their same things, and they
- 17:04Speaker 3: do it well and if things really click, they can
- 17:06Speaker 3: they can break out and have a really good year.
- 17:08Speaker 3: And and Drake Lindsay does that for Iowa if like
- 17:12Speaker 3: just keeps doing what he did, what he's doing, and
- 17:15Speaker 3: you know, I think the question for for Minnesota fans
- 17:18Speaker 3: is is is good enough? But like Illinois, but the
- 17:21Speaker 3: floor has been raised, right, They make a Bowl game
- 17:24Speaker 3: every year. They have talked that they could go further,
- 17:29Speaker 3: but they're they're there's just nothing anything flashy Wisconsin. Luke
- 17:35Speaker 3: Fickel year four. They've tried a lot of things. They
- 17:41Speaker 3: went four and eight last year.
- 17:44Speaker 2: I don't know how.
- 17:46Speaker 3: I feel about Wisconsin. There's more talk about them being better.
- 17:50Speaker 3: They haven't made a Bowl game in two straight years.
- 17:52Speaker 3: They seem to be following the Nebraska path of post
- 17:56Speaker 3: Bow Polini their start, and quarterback Colton Joseph projected to
- 18:03Speaker 3: be QB one.
- 18:07Speaker 2: I I don't know.
- 18:08Speaker 3: I Wisconsin's one of these hard teams that like if
- 18:12Speaker 3: if they go back to.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Their roots, I think they're gonna be better off.
- 18:16Speaker 3: We learned that lesson, but so far they haven't shown
- 18:21Speaker 3: to do that. You know, Luke Fickle was also a
- 18:24Speaker 3: guy in that same year as Matt Ruhle, Right that
- 18:27Speaker 3: what another name in Nebraska was, and some people wanted
- 18:31Speaker 3: Fickle over rule. So that's what makes this conversation a
- 18:33Speaker 3: little bit fun.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Uh.
- 18:36Speaker 3: UCLA's the next team I want to talk about here
- 18:40Speaker 3: with Bob Chesney, who got a lot of headlines and
- 18:43Speaker 3: praise at Big Ten media days coming over from James Madison.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Obviously James Madison post Kurt Signetti. He continued that and
- 18:54Speaker 3: got himself a power for job and Ucla. Last year,
- 19:02Speaker 3: they struggled. They went three and nine. They fired to
- 19:05Speaker 3: Sean Foster in the middle of the year. Oh, sunshine,
- 19:12Speaker 3: but blonde I forget his name now, the blondehaired kid
- 19:16Speaker 3: took over his head coach. Was kind of a fun
- 19:17Speaker 3: story there for a little bit. Who I think he's
- 19:20Speaker 3: now at Northwestern, which.
- 19:23Speaker 2: We'll get to here.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Uh, Nico, I'm Aliva, I'm a lava. However you want
- 19:32Speaker 3: to say his name is back at quarterback, he's still
- 19:37Speaker 3: that same elite recruit that he was. I think you
- 19:43Speaker 3: saw his his upside in some games last year. We'll see,
- 19:49Speaker 3: We'll see what he looks like in this new offense
- 19:53Speaker 3: under offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy. If he's elites and just
- 19:58Speaker 3: kind of like a couple of these other teams, right,
- 20:00Speaker 3: if it's not all relying on his arm and his legs,
- 20:05Speaker 3: UCLA could be another team that shocks some people. He
- 20:09Speaker 3: Chesney obviously knows how to win. He she's shown how
- 20:12Speaker 3: to do that. Can can he do that at UCLA?
- 20:17Speaker 3: This last team here, I don't know. I think actually
- 20:22Speaker 3: I'm putting them in the next tier. So that's I'm
- 20:25Speaker 3: put four teams in this tier Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ucla,
- 20:29Speaker 3: and I'm gonna move Initially had them in Tier three,
- 20:32Speaker 3: but Tier four are moving Northwestern down here, and these
- 20:37Speaker 3: are all teams to me that I think are looking
- 20:39Speaker 3: for a bowl game a Northwestern did make a bowl
- 20:42Speaker 3: game last year and beat Central Michigan in that bowl game.
- 20:45Speaker 3: David Brown, I think he's done a pretty damn good
- 20:48Speaker 3: job at Northwestern and he's now in his fourth season
- 20:53Speaker 3: as a head coach. Chip Kelly comes in as a
- 20:55Speaker 3: new offensive coordinator. Yes, Chip Kelly, he is at Northwestern.
- 21:01Speaker 3: The big storyline in Northwestern is they got a new
- 21:04Speaker 3: stadium and it's I don't know, glorified soccer stadium as
- 21:07Speaker 3: I've heard it's called, but it's nice. Like to me,
- 21:10Speaker 3: it's it's right what you expect out of a Northwestern stadium.
- 21:15Speaker 3: It doesn't need to be a big ninety thousand seeded
- 21:17Speaker 3: because they don't get those fans.
- 21:18Speaker 2: They go to the games anyways.
- 21:21Speaker 3: It's usually filled with opposing teams fans. But it looks
- 21:26Speaker 3: it looks very good for their situation. Aiden childs ors
- 21:30Speaker 3: Austin likes to call Maiden Chili's coming in from Michigan
- 21:34Speaker 3: State as the quarterback, you know, pairing him with Chip
- 21:39Speaker 3: Kelly's offense is it'll be a very sneaky fun experiment
- 21:44Speaker 3: here in the Big Ten. I think the question is
- 21:47Speaker 3: going to be on their defense, you know, can they
- 21:50Speaker 3: can they finally slow some teams down? Next team here
- 21:56Speaker 3: in this bottom tier Rutgers Schiano seven and his second
- 22:01Speaker 3: stint Nebraska does go out there. This is the game
- 22:05Speaker 3: that I gosh, we we we hope we can win
- 22:07Speaker 3: going out to Pascataway. Uh, we'll see what what what
- 22:13Speaker 3: what's in store for I don't know either of these
- 22:16Speaker 3: quarterbacks A. J. Serros and Dylan Longer, And I think
- 22:22Speaker 3: Rutgers question is going to be can they defend and
- 22:24Speaker 3: play ugly and and muck up some wins. Maryland with
- 22:30Speaker 3: Mike Losley, I think he's probably the coach on the
- 22:35Speaker 3: hottest of hot seats here in the Big Ten in
- 22:38Speaker 3: his eighth year. We went out there last year to
- 22:40Speaker 3: the to the game, and he was not very highly
- 22:46Speaker 3: praised from a lot of the Maryland fans as we
- 22:49Speaker 3: talk to them. But they do have a quarterback that
- 22:52Speaker 3: I'm very high on and and and it's fun to
- 22:54Speaker 3: watch in in Malik Washington.
- 22:57Speaker 2: He was a freshman last.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Year too, So Locksley's been two and sixteen in the
- 23:01Speaker 3: Big Ten in the last two years. They have some talent.
- 23:05Speaker 3: They usually start the year off hot. Can they sustain
- 23:08Speaker 3: that into October and November Michigan States, Yes, it's I
- 23:14Speaker 3: feel like maybe they shouldn't be in this tier, but
- 23:16Speaker 3: as of right now they are. They went four and
- 23:18Speaker 3: to eight last year. Jonathan Smith that experiment failed. In
- 23:22Speaker 3: comes Pat Fitzgerald, the guy that's had Nebraska's number in
- 23:27Speaker 3: the past as far as just always given us a
- 23:29Speaker 3: challenge no.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Matter what team he had at Northwestern.
- 23:33Speaker 3: I think this could be a slow start for Fitzgerald's
- 23:37Speaker 3: ten year at Michigan State, and it may be tough.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Now. I'm going to bite my tongue and sing that
- 23:42Speaker 2: when we go out.
- 23:42Speaker 3: And or if we go out and lose in our
- 23:45Speaker 3: first conference game out there, but this is a game
- 23:48Speaker 3: that Nebraska. We should be a couple double digit point
- 23:50Speaker 3: favor out there, even just given where Michigan State's at
- 23:55Speaker 3: and where I think they want to be, a lot
- 23:58Speaker 3: of people aren't high on Fitzgerald. I don't like that
- 24:00Speaker 3: because it's gonna give them more momentum and in the
- 24:05Speaker 3: locker room. But I do have them in this bottom
- 24:08Speaker 3: tier right now, and like I said, Nebraska is no
- 24:11Speaker 3: stranger to losing to these bottom tier teams because we
- 24:13Speaker 3: have so maybe we should be in there too. But
- 24:17Speaker 3: this is where I find them right now. And then
- 24:19Speaker 3: Purdue two and ten last year head coach Barry otom
- 24:26Speaker 3: in his second year. I guess I don't know what
- 24:31Speaker 3: to say about Purdue. They are trying to build something.
- 24:35Speaker 3: They've tried to build something some different coaches. Odom is
- 24:40Speaker 3: bringing in what he believes is his version of that,
- 24:42Speaker 3: and he's a he's a toughness type of coach. Ryan
- 24:46Speaker 3: Brown is returning, so there's there's a bright side there
- 24:49Speaker 3: as a projected starter. I mean, I think for me,
- 24:55Speaker 3: I guess it's not even for me. But Dak mentioned
- 24:58Speaker 3: the the uh comment by the Purdue A d I
- 25:05Speaker 3: think Perdue just needs to become respectable again in the conference.
- 25:08Speaker 3: And again I say that they when they weren't maybe
- 25:11Speaker 3: as respectable. They also beat Nebraska back then, So I
- 25:16Speaker 3: think for them, you know, getting to a bowl game
- 25:18Speaker 3: would be a big, big, big step in the right direction,
- 25:21Speaker 3: but even even going four to eight or five and
- 25:23Speaker 3: seven will be progressed for them.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Uh.
- 25:25Speaker 3: And and I think in year two, you know, under
- 25:29Speaker 3: Barry Odom, getting moving forward to that point would be
- 25:34Speaker 3: a positive So.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Those are my tiers here for the Big Ten.
- 25:38Speaker 3: I think looking at the Big Ten from a bigger
- 25:40Speaker 3: picture standpoint, I do think that there is obviously coming
- 25:46Speaker 3: off their third national title in a row, high expectations
- 25:49Speaker 3: from the conference overall, and one of those three teams
- 25:54Speaker 3: I mentioned at the top are all going to be
- 25:55Speaker 3: top A potential national title contenders and win for this year.
- 26:01Speaker 3: So we'll see if we can hold up our end
- 26:03Speaker 3: of the bargain.
- 26:04Speaker 2: It is fun.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Being in the conference because we get a lot of talk,
- 26:10Speaker 3: but it's not fun in the sense that we have
- 26:14Speaker 3: to play all these teams and when we're trying to
- 26:17Speaker 3: be nationally irrelevant as well, which we haven't been in
- 26:21Speaker 3: decades now.
- 26:23Speaker 2: That's sad to say. I think that makes it tough, right,
- 26:27Speaker 2: So I think it's it's.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Probably the best conference now in the in the country,
- 26:33Speaker 3: and it's not being Big Ten bias. That's that's pretty
- 26:37Speaker 3: much a fact given had the last few years have gone.
- 26:39Speaker 3: It has really pulled the SEC's hair out a little
- 26:44Speaker 3: bit where we're at in the college football landscape.
- 26:47Speaker 2: So that'll do it for today. In the Big Ten
- 26:51Speaker 2: preview tomorrow, we'll be.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Back talking about identity and philosophies and what that means
- 26:59Speaker 3: and what we expect that to mean for Nebraska's offense
- 27:03Speaker 3: and defense.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Again.
