- 1:36Feel free to grab that and come on
- 1:37back so we can kick off the show.
- 1:41All right, everyone.
- 1:42So welcome.
- 1:43Yes, welcome.
- 1:43Welcome, welcome, welcome to another powerful episode of
- 1:47Building Your Life, of course, now with Discipline,
- 1:51Growth, and Ownership.
- 1:53And so, you know, I'm John C.
- 1:55Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 2:00podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, and
- 2:04passionate lifelong learner, and now a published author,
- 2:08which I'm so grateful to be.
- 2:11Today's message is simple, but transformational is the
- 2:17key.
- 2:18You do not need to be perfect to
- 2:21move forward.
- 2:23You just need to show up.
- 2:27This episode is, yes, you can show up
- 2:30imperfectly.
- 2:32It's about building real momentum through consistency, releasing
- 2:37unrealistic pressure, and taking ownership of your growth
- 2:41one step at a time.
- 2:44So let's kick it off with our very
- 2:45first point, and that is number one, consistency.
- 2:50Consistency beats talent over time.
- 2:53Consistency compounds results.
- 2:56Talent may open the door, but showing up
- 2:59daily is what builds the lasting success.
- 3:02You know, people think just because you've done
- 3:03something one time, you know, you're going to
- 3:05be a hero.
- 3:06I'm here to tell you, you're not.
- 3:09You need to keep showing up.
- 3:11You need to keep having that consistency.
- 3:13You keep having that structure, and that's when
- 3:15you're going to notice change, and not immediately,
- 3:17guys.
- 3:17It's going to take a little bit of
- 3:18time, all right, before you're going to see
- 3:19some lasting success.
- 3:21Number two, you don't need a perfect plan.
- 3:24People think you do.
- 3:26You don't, but just the next step.
- 3:31Clarity comes from action.
- 3:32Focus on what you can do now instead
- 3:34of waiting for everything to be figured out.
- 3:38I think that's the problem.
- 3:39People think if it's not figured out that
- 3:41they can't move forward in their lives, but
- 3:44I'm here to tell you that you will
- 3:46figure things out as you go, and I
- 3:48know that can sound, how can I say,
- 3:50a little bit daunting, a little bit scary,
- 3:52but it is the truth.
- 3:53You are all very, very smart, and so
- 3:56when you have the ability to trust, you
- 4:00know that things are going to grow.
- 4:02You know that things are going to get
- 4:03better, all right?
- 4:04I think that's a very important thing to
- 4:08basically understand.
- 4:12Number three, showing up, messy beats, not showing
- 4:17up at all, imperfect action, creates progress.
- 4:22Waiting for perfect conditions keeps you stuck, keeps
- 4:27you procrastinating, keeps you wondering, what if?
- 4:32But yet, you don't seem to get any
- 4:34better results because you're doing what Einstein said,
- 4:38insanity.
- 4:39You're doing the same thing over and over
- 4:40again and expecting different results, and that's just
- 4:42not going to work, right?
- 4:44It's not going to work.
- 4:45Number four, think progress, not performance.
- 4:51Shift your mindset toward improvement.
- 4:55Now, growth happens when you stop trying to
- 4:58impress and start trying to evolve.
- 5:03It also comes with a quiet inner voice,
- 5:17right?
- 5:19I think that's an important thing to understand,
- 5:28and it's becoming aware of things, right?
- 5:35There was an interesting quote.
- 5:37You walk into a room, you see a
- 5:40dog, and let's say you see a cat,
- 5:45and you see a table, and above the
- 5:48table, you see a rooster.
- 5:51And it goes like this, how many legs
- 5:54are touching the floor?
- 5:56So most people would say eight because there's
- 6:03eight touching the floor.
- 6:05Now, we have eight legs, okay, but we
- 6:12also have four more legs, four
- 6:22more legs from the table.
- 6:24So that would be eight.
- 6:27Now, technically, are the two from the chicken,
- 6:33the hen, is that on the floor?
- 6:37Technically, it's the legs of the table that
- 6:42are touching the floor.
- 6:43But we're not talking about being connected.
- 6:47We know the legs from the cat and
- 6:49the dog are definitely touching the floor.
- 6:51We know the legs of the table.
- 6:52So I would have to say four and
- 6:54four is eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, four
- 6:59times three.
- 7:00But that's all about perception, right?
- 7:03Our whole life is about perception and how
- 7:05we can distinguish things, and then we can
- 7:08make strides to where we want to go.
- 7:11Number five, guys, you're allowed to be a
- 7:14work in progress.
- 7:15You don't have to be finished right now.
- 7:18In public, you do not need to hide
- 7:20your journey.
- 7:21You see, real growth is visible, honest, and
- 7:26it's ongoing.
- 7:27And I think when people learn to be
- 7:29that way, their life can change.
- 7:37Their life can change because of the fact
- 7:42that they're humbling themselves, right?
- 7:47And I think that's hard for some people
- 7:49to understand, that when we understand stuff, our
- 7:57world changes around us.
- 8:01Our world changes around us in an instant.
- 8:05But if we're not aware of the perceptions,
- 8:10then it's like nothing happened.
- 8:13Just like you look at the table, right?
- 8:15And you look at the animals, you first
- 8:17say, well, gee, four, four, eight.
- 8:19And you forget about the four legs in
- 8:21the table, 12, right?
- 8:24Number six, one small action today is better
- 8:27than 10 ideas tomorrow.
- 8:29Execution beats intention time in and time out.
- 8:32What you do now matters more than what
- 8:35you plan later, right?
- 8:38Planning is good.
- 8:40It's good to have that action.
- 8:41But it's also important to take some steps
- 8:43now.
- 8:46I think that's a very important thing, OK?
- 8:51Number seven, motivation fades, habits carry you.
- 8:58Motivation is temporary.
- 9:00Habits create stability.
- 9:02And they keep you moving forward.
- 9:08They keep you moving forward.
- 9:13And I think sometimes when we hear this,
- 9:16we're not really sure how to respond.
- 9:18We're not sure.
- 9:21But I want to tell you that you
- 9:22can respond in a pretty easy way.
- 9:28But oftentimes, it gets confusing because of what
- 9:33someone else said.
- 9:34And that perception becomes what?
- 9:37Our reality, even if, ladies and gentlemen, it's
- 9:40not true.
- 9:42Even if it's not true.
- 9:44Number eight, you won't always feel like the
- 9:49way you do now.
- 9:50Do it gently anyway, right?
- 9:53Maybe you don't feel like exercising.
- 9:55Do it gently anyway.
- 9:57Maybe you can't do the full battery of
- 9:59exercises.
- 10:00Do something anyway.
- 10:06And you're going to feel productive.
- 10:08Show up in a way that is manageable
- 10:11and will keep you going.
- 10:14The inertia of the energy is going to
- 10:17make you even feel positive.
- 10:20Number nine, lower the bar and keep it
- 10:23moving.
- 10:25Make it easier to begin.
- 10:28You have to take the first step, so
- 10:29let's make it easy to begin.
- 10:31Progress will build, I promise you, folks, when
- 10:34resistance is low.
- 10:36We can always make things harder, like maybe
- 10:38you're on a bicycle and you lower the
- 10:41resistance so that you can start.
- 10:43But the truth of the matter is, when
- 10:45you lower the resistance, the bar to entry
- 10:48is easier.
- 10:50Number 10, you can rest without quitting.
- 10:53It's perfectly OK to rest.
- 10:55I rest.
- 10:57Rest supports growth.
- 11:00Pausing does not mean stopping.
- 11:05I know many years ago with my dad
- 11:08and family, they would say, John, you're taking
- 11:11a break.
- 11:11I'm like, yes, I am taking a break.
- 11:14Well, wait, we didn't finish.
- 11:16I understand we didn't finish, but it's important
- 11:18to know that it's OK to take a
- 11:21break and not be chastised for it.
- 11:28I think that's something that a lot of
- 11:30people miss.
- 11:34All right, a lot of people miss that.
- 11:37Number 11, tiny routines change your life slowly.
- 11:42Small actions repeated daily create powerful long-term
- 11:46change.
- 11:48And I think most people don't understand the
- 11:51law of compounds, right?
- 11:53They don't understand what's going on.
- 11:55And I know how this all works, right?
- 12:00I know how this all works.
- 12:03And it's important.
- 12:11A lot of people will do something because
- 12:16of the show of it.
- 12:18But you know what they won't do?
- 12:21They won't figure out if there's truth right
- 12:24away.
- 12:25They just know that it appears to look
- 12:29good.
- 12:30But is it really good?
- 12:32That's the question.
- 12:34And it's a conundrum a lot of people
- 12:37get into.
- 12:38Number 12, don't confuse boredom with failure.
- 12:42I've done it myself when I was young.
- 12:44Growth is often repetitive.
- 12:48And repetition builds mastery.
- 12:52You know, when you learn something and then
- 12:55you do it after a while and you
- 12:57start doing it almost autonomously and you do
- 12:58it perfectly, you're like, wow, that happened because
- 13:02you kept on.
- 13:04You were consistent.
- 13:05You had a structure.
- 13:10Consistency may feel boring, but it is effective,
- 13:14my friends.
- 13:16It is effective.
- 13:18Number 13, you don't need to reinvent your
- 13:22life every week.
- 13:23You need to keep going.
- 13:26Stay steady.
- 13:27You don't need to reinvent the wheel.
- 13:28It was already invented.
- 13:30Success, ladies and gentlemen, comes from continuation, not
- 13:33constant change.
- 13:36But I know a lot of people are
- 13:37like, well, let's change this.
- 13:38Let's change that.
- 13:39Let's change this.
- 13:40And all they do is change stuff, and
- 13:41it becomes more of a problem.
- 13:44Number 14, track your effort, not just your
- 13:51outcomes.
- 13:52See, effort is within your control.
- 13:56Measuring it keeps you accountable and focused on
- 14:01the task at hand.
- 14:03Number 15, this is one a lot of
- 14:07people don't want to do, but I think
- 14:08it's really key.
- 14:11And that is, ladies and gentlemen, celebrate your
- 14:14micro-wins.
- 14:15Small progress deserves recognition too.
- 14:19It builds confidence and motivation over and over
- 14:23again.
- 14:24You'll say, you know, I didn't finish yet,
- 14:26so I shouldn't be able to do anything.
- 14:30Right?
- 14:38That's important.
- 14:42And if we start to realize that, then
- 14:47our life is going to change.
- 14:53It's going to change.
- 14:55Number 16, did you know that your 70
- 14:58% effort is still valuable?
- 15:01You do not need perfection.
- 15:03Like I was telling you, maybe I'm tired
- 15:05and I can't do 100% of my
- 15:07workout before I go to sleep, but I
- 15:09still put a good effort to get a
- 15:11lot of it done.
- 15:12And that means something.
- 15:13And that means more, because if I skipped
- 15:16it, I'd be like, oh, my gosh, I
- 15:18skipped it.
- 15:20Now, maybe you're so tired or something else
- 15:23came upon you, or even maybe you had
- 15:24a headache.
- 15:24I've had that happen to me, right?
- 15:26And I can't do the full battery that
- 15:30well, but I still try as much as
- 15:32I can.
- 15:34Because you don't need perfection.
- 15:37You need consistent, structured effort.
- 15:40Even imperfect moves you forward.
- 15:44Now, it may not be as fast as
- 15:45you want to go, but that is OK.
- 15:49Number 17, make the choice, ladies and gentlemen,
- 15:53right now to show up for yourself like
- 15:55you show up for other people.
- 15:58What do I mean by this?
- 16:01You're a good person.
- 16:02You're accountable, right?
- 16:05And you show up for people.
- 16:07My question to you right now tonight is,
- 16:10why don't you show up for yourself?
- 16:13Well, it's just me.
- 16:15So what are you, chopped liver?
- 16:17You don't want to show up for yourself?
- 16:19Well, if I disappoint myself, it's like it's
- 16:21only me.
- 16:22It's like, so you're saying that you have
- 16:25less respect for yourself than your other people?
- 16:27No, no, no, no, I'm not really saying
- 16:28that.
- 16:29What are you saying?
- 16:31I'm saying that I can always make it
- 16:35up to myself later.
- 16:36Oh, you can.
- 16:37So now you're knowing that you can already
- 16:42negotiate with yourself, and you're planning to not
- 16:45do something because you know that you'll let
- 16:48yourself off easy?
- 16:49No, that's disrespect.
- 16:53Show up for yourself like you show up
- 16:55for others.
- 16:56Honor your own commitments.
- 17:00Self-trust is built through follow-through.
- 17:04And ladies and gentlemen, it does not need
- 17:07to be perfect.
- 17:11It needs to be consistent, and it needs
- 17:13to be structured, consistent, and structured, consistent,
- 17:31and structured.
- 17:32That's the key.
- 17:34Number 18, guys, perfection is just a delay
- 17:37tactic.
- 17:39Action is clarity.
- 17:41Taking action reveals what works.
- 17:44When you don't, you just become better at
- 17:48procrastination and disappointment.
- 17:53Waiting only delays growth.
- 17:56So my question is, why do people delay
- 17:58growth?
- 18:00Einstein already told us that if we do
- 18:02the same thing over and over again, and
- 18:03we expect different results, that's insanity.
- 18:07So are we insane?
- 18:09We do the same thing over and over
- 18:10again, expect different results.
- 18:11We are, according to Einstein.
- 18:13So we need to change something up.
- 18:14We need to change some of the inputs,
- 18:17or we're never going to get different outputs.
- 18:20Number 19, guys, you are not lazy.
- 18:24You're overwhelmed.
- 18:26Just start smaller.
- 18:29Overwhelmingness blocks action.
- 18:32Kind of cripples us.
- 18:34Simplify the tasks to make progress easier.
- 18:37And when you do, your body's like, oh,
- 18:39I can do this.
- 18:40I'm all over this.
- 18:41I got this.
- 18:45Different feeling than, oh, wait a minute, I
- 18:47can't do this.
- 18:47I can't, I can't, I can't.
- 18:49Right?
- 18:51Number 20, guys, break it down into things
- 18:57you can do in five minutes.
- 19:00Starting small reduces resistance.
- 19:03Action often grows once you begin.
- 19:06Once you see that you're able to solve
- 19:09a problem, you're ready to do the next
- 19:11thing.
- 19:21That's interesting, right?
- 19:24Very interesting because now you understand it.
- 19:32Pretty neat.
- 19:40I think sometimes people, they set expectations for
- 19:46themselves that are unrealistic because they put a
- 19:50timeline down that's not realistic because they have
- 20:00underestimated how long it's going to take to
- 20:02do something because, well, let's face it, they've
- 20:06been procrastinating their whole life.
- 20:08So going from procrastination to action is not
- 20:11something that happens overnight.
- 20:13This is a way of life, guys.
- 20:16It's not something you just do because it's
- 20:19fun for one day.
- 20:21It becomes part of you.
- 20:22Now, ladies and gentlemen, number 21, you can
- 20:24rebuild momentum any day of the week, not
- 20:29just Monday.
- 20:30There's no perfect start time or even date
- 20:34or holiday or year.
- 20:35You can begin again whenever you choose to
- 20:38do it.
- 20:39Don't be married to things like, well, it
- 20:41has to be on the first of the
- 20:42month.
- 20:43It has to be on a Monday.
- 20:43It has to be on January 1st, right?
- 20:47Those are all excuses for you to procrastinate
- 20:50and not do anything all those other days
- 20:52that you could be doing to actually get
- 20:54somewhere.
- 20:55Number 22, be the person who doesn't disappear
- 20:58on themselves.
- 20:59Stay consistent with your own goals.
- 21:04Reliability builds confidence.
- 21:07And it releases the dopamine in your brain.
- 21:11I think that's a very important thing to
- 21:13understand, okay?
- 21:19Important to understand that.
- 21:24Really important to understand.
- 21:31And maybe you're saying to me, John, I
- 21:34get so overwhelmed, but I just shut down
- 21:36and I figure I need to take a
- 21:37nap.
- 21:39So when you get up from that nap,
- 21:43think about the big picture, but then try
- 21:48to just start charting a few things down
- 21:51that you could do right now.
- 21:53And then as you start to see, you
- 21:55could put those things on your calendar and
- 21:57realize that they only take two to five
- 21:59minutes.
- 22:00They don't seem so bad.
- 22:01I know when I first started doing this
- 22:03a while back, I was like, oh my
- 22:03gosh, how am I ever gonna get all
- 22:04this stuff done?
- 22:05I'm like, wait a minute.
- 22:06This stuff doesn't take as long as I
- 22:07thought it did.
- 22:08It took more time to plan it.
- 22:11But now that it's on autopilot, guess what?
- 22:14It just is on my schedule and I
- 22:16can do it.
- 22:18Number 23, guys, your future self will thank
- 22:21you for every imperfect rep, every action adds
- 22:25up.
- 22:27You're investing in who you are.
- 22:30That's who you're becoming.
- 22:32Transforming to who you are today, to who
- 22:35you want to become.
- 22:37Number 24, guys, discipline is a love language.
- 22:40You speak to yourself.
- 22:42Discipline is self-respect.
- 22:45It reflects now how much you value your
- 22:49future.
- 22:51You know what that is?
- 22:53Or do you just say, it's okay, I'll
- 22:56figure it out on my journey, right?
- 23:12I think a lot of people don't realize
- 23:15that.
- 23:19And that's something I think that, it freaks
- 23:23a lot of people out because they don't
- 23:24know, well, where do I start?
- 23:26I've never had this problem.
- 23:27I never did this before.
- 23:29Number 25, keep showing up.
- 23:33That's your superpower.
- 23:37Consistency and structure create results.
