- 0:00Welcome to the Western show. You continue to talk like you're
- 0:05talking right now. You'll be history on this
- 0:07program. Cooler show.
- 0:11Nobody eats beef and Roni on a boat, man.
- 0:14That's a problem, Yokozuna. Blew my mind what you did, Jack
- 0:23Tony. Let's go.
- 0:37I've got under your skin. I'm ready for this.
- 0:39Episode now, Yeah. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to
- 0:48your favorite nostalgic wrestling podcast.
- 0:51This is the Extra Cooler show. My name is Nick, otherwise known
- 0:54as Extra Cooler, and me and the Survivor Series team are back,
- 0:58baby. I think tonight we're horsemen.
- 1:01I think we're to say we're the four horsemen this evening, so
- 1:04I'll throw a four. Let's hope we don't get our ass
- 1:07kicked. On work rate in quotation marks.
- 1:12Bogus work rate, yes. As usual, you guys can find us
- 1:16on Instagram at Extra Cooler and at the Extra Cooler show.
- 1:20Join us over on our Discord channel, which as usual, it's
- 1:23still still cooking over there. So thanks to everybody who
- 1:27listens to this podcast and puts it in your wrestling rotation.
- 1:31And thanks to everybody who's over there holding it down at
- 1:33the Discord. Matt I, I don't think there's
- 1:37much housekeeping, but it has been a while since we've all
- 1:40been here. Yeah, I mean, we just had our
- 1:44our last episode was right around when Hogan had passed, so
- 1:48we had prerecorded it. So I tried to jump back in and
- 1:51just kind of give a little homage to to an extent there and
- 1:55hope we did all right in those seven quick minutes that I tried
- 1:57to put some words together. It's a little difficult to do
- 1:59for a complicated man, but man, it's been that long since we've
- 2:03been in front of microphones. So I'm I'm just excited to be
- 2:06back. That's my only housekeeping for
- 2:08the week, if you will, and I'm sure there'll be plenty more
- 2:11because we're covering WCW today.
- 2:15It's always fitting the show's back in the, the, you know, in
- 2:18the fall as school stars. So it's kind of a school themed
- 2:21show to begin with, right? All our gimmickry of credit and
- 2:24and homework. So it's fun.
- 2:27Summer has ended. Summer Slam was a great season 5
- 2:30finale, if you will. And here we are, back to school
- 2:34Season 1, episode 1 of season 6. I love it.
- 2:39It's it, it feels really good to be back.
- 2:42You know, we took a little bit of a break and you're here,
- 2:45you're listening, you're playing this episode of the Extra Cooler
- 2:49show. So I'm going to dive us, have us
- 2:51dive right into our our content. And we didn't really know what
- 2:57we were going to come back with. We were, we were tossing around
- 3:00ideas left and right and then one night I was like, why don't
- 3:05we just do like a something around WCW Fall Fall Brawl,
- 3:09right? And so I landed on throwing out
- 3:13WCW Fall Brawl from 1996. It takes place in September on
- 3:18September 15th, 1996 from Winston Salem, NC.
- 3:23The Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum holds a little
- 3:27over 11,000 people and you know, I feel like it doesn't get
- 3:32talked about enough. Everybody always talks about the
- 3:36Hogan Turn bash at the beach, but nobody ever really dives
- 3:41into the the what happens right after, you know, and and
- 3:46shortly. After.
- 3:48Right, We all, we all know how like the NWO kind of like
- 3:51crumbles. It gets too many members and it
- 3:54just turns into a hot mess. But this is this is so close to
- 3:59it. It's less than two months after
- 4:02Bash at the Beach, right? And here we are.
- 4:06I just, I just thought this would be an interesting thing to
- 4:08cover. NWO is still pretty raw.
- 4:12They're starting to gain some new members, which we're going
- 4:15to get to a lot later. But yeah, let's let's talk about
- 4:19the entire card, right? We get an intro package and then
- 4:24throws right over to the desk with Heenan, Tony, Shivani and
- 4:27Dusty on commentary and they dive right into the action,
- 4:33right with with DDP versus Chavo Guerrero Junior, is he even DDP?
- 4:40No, he's just Diamond Dallas at this point.
- 4:42Diamond Dallas Page. Yeah, for sure I don't.
- 4:44Think he has the page, they just keep calling him Diamond Dallas.
- 4:49He's listed on Wikipedia as Diamond Tower's page.
- 4:52So that's, that's my resource for this knowledge of this.
- 4:55And I didn't take notice while I was watching, that's for sure.
- 4:58But we can play everyone's favorite game because Chavo
- 5:01Guerrero Junior looks super young, super young here based on
- 5:07Jim's Jim's little smirk that he just had on What's the age of
- 5:12Chavo Guerrero Junior in 1996? I don't like this.
- 5:16You're turning the tables on me here.
- 5:19I already know the answer so I'm not going to chime in.
- 5:21What? Do you got Mikey?
- 5:24I'm going to say 21. All right, I'm going to say 23
- 5:27then. 26 All right, we undershot it there.
- 5:32Big. Time.
- 5:32I was going to say 25 but Mikey brought my guest down.
- 5:35I'm blaming I should have gone first.
- 5:39Yeah, 26 here, actually. He's Jim.
- 5:42You were correct. He's actually 25.
- 5:44He's one month away from turning 26.
- 5:46He his birthday is in October. Very good.
- 5:48I like you said I was correct even though I was.
- 5:50Wrong. You're you're sort of correct,
- 5:52but this, this match was fun to me.
- 5:54It was a lot of little man watching Chavo kind of fight
- 5:57from underneath against DDP here and there's a really nasty tilt,
- 6:01A whirl powerbomb that's a 2 count and man, Chavo lands on
- 6:05his side and the side of his head.
- 6:08It doesn't even look like he cuts out.
- 6:09He kicks out and then right afterwards his Diamond Cutter
- 6:12123 and it's over. But this was kind of a fun way
- 6:15to kick this card. Match match goes a little over
- 6:1913 minutes and I I actually kind of think it's appropriate with
- 6:23our return because I've got a million and one things going on
- 6:27in my life. And it just so happens I got an
- 6:30e-mail from one of the participants in this match, and
- 6:34I'm doing work for Chavo Guerrero right now.
- 6:37So I can't tell you anything else.
- 6:38But yeah, it's pretty exciting. And to be watching this
- 6:41pay-per-view at the time, like in and around when I'm shooting
- 6:46the shit with Chavo Guerrero and he's, you know, and he's telling
- 6:50me like, pump, don't worry, He's telling me, don't worry, don't
- 6:52rush. My wife's a teacher too.
- 6:54So I get it is what's cool responses when I?
- 6:56Apologize for like. Yeah, yeah, he's been cool to
- 7:00work with. So it's, I think that's that's
- 7:02cool how the two things align right now it's.
- 7:05Pretty awesome. So.
- 7:07So we give the match 5 cans in a cooler.
- 7:08Right. Oh easily, easily.
- 7:10Before our next match, we get a really, really, really long
- 7:15recap of the NWO and. As long as long as it was I
- 7:21actually like that it was there intro package to the entire
- 7:25event and then, you know, it was very WCW.
- 7:28It was very cheesy at this at this stage, but it hit all the
- 7:32big the big heavy hitters right. It it gave you the timeline of
- 7:35not only from bash at the beach and Ford.
- 7:38You can go back and listen in the archives.
- 7:40Episode 161 is when we covered the bash at the beach and the
- 7:44whole new turn. Look at that.
- 7:46And then, yeah, we come into and they actually give you kind of
- 7:51what's happened since the turn. And really the rise to power
- 7:54here of the NWO is so interesting to me.
- 7:56And you called it out earlier, Nick, But like, it's fascinating
- 7:59to like try to recall what's all that stuff that's going on.
- 8:03And the, the, the sting of it all on top of that is extremely
- 8:07interesting to me 'cause it made me double gas, double, double
- 8:11question myself of what was actually going on with Sting.
- 8:14And like, I couldn't remember that timeline.
- 8:17How much of this was on your radar at the time in 1996?
- 8:21Like do you? I don't remember.
- 8:23I remember it like later on, like like it did not.
- 8:25It took a while for to to seep into wrestling like hardcore so.
- 8:32I don't remember being super excited about like any of these
- 8:36guys starting to join. And I think to me, that's where
- 8:39what the NWO timeline is. It's not like who they feuded
- 8:42with. It's just a matter of like the
- 8:45order in which guys started to join the NWO and it started to
- 8:49slowly fall apart. That's exactly how I feel too.
- 8:53It's like you don't remember the NWO aside from like, oh, this is
- 8:57when 6 shows up or this is when the giant joins or Oh yeah, I
- 9:01remember Rick Rude. Like all of those things are the
- 9:03ones that like stand out to me. But 9697, this was really when
- 9:08you know, again, I've told this story a million times.
- 9:10Not Mikey workrate, but a different mic of friend of mine.
- 9:13We were calling each other like every Monday night and staying
- 9:16on the phone for two hours being like, all right, you turn on
- 9:18raw, I'll turn on on Nitro and I will switch back and forth.
- 9:22Go, go, go Hokans on hokans on. So like that's the the mode that
- 9:26I'm in at this point, but it's so fuzzy, like I can't remember
- 9:29timelines in WCW. Like I can remember timelines in
- 9:33an Austin McMahon or something. Like that, it's definitely very
- 9:38fuzzy for me. So after that package, that
- 9:40video again, I agree. That video package, I, I
- 9:43definitely enjoyed watching that whole timeline of that like, you
- 9:46know, three, I guess three months, 2 1/2 month period.
- 9:51After that we get ice train and where this is where you're like,
- 9:55OK, it's still WWE ice train. Teddy Long defeating Scott
- 9:59Norton in a submission match. So this is when I was like, I'm
- 10:03going to watch, you know what? I'm going to watch the whole
- 10:04card even though we don't have to.
- 10:06And then this match came on and I promptly fell asleep.
- 10:08Like it's like finally a Scott Norton match.
- 10:12I've been waiting to cover a. Scott Norton match.
- 10:14There are two positive things that came out of this match.
- 10:18One, it's Dusty. Well, actually both of them are
- 10:21Dusty Rhodes, but Dusty on commentary, not only he's like
- 10:25trying to drive home that the object of this match is to uncle
- 10:29a guy. So like, not not have him
- 10:32submit, but you got to uncle him.
- 10:34You got to get him to say uncle. Like it was just, you know, you
- 10:37got an uncle. And it was so bizarre.
- 10:39It was like, maybe it's a, you know, a Southern thing.
- 10:42Maybe I just don't understand it.
- 10:44But it was never in our vernacular, or at least my
- 10:46vernacular growing up. My cousins would do that to me.
- 10:48To say uncle, say uncle, like it's like give mercy, mercy, you
- 10:52know, or like. I've heard it before but I've
- 10:54like never heard it as uncling a guy like you're.
- 10:57Yeah, yeah, that was. New to me?
- 11:00But more importantly, Dusty gives you the best, best sound
- 11:06clip that you will hear all day and I'm going to lay it on you.
- 11:10I hate WCW alright. I'm sorry I hit the wrong one.
- 11:15This is. He has no advantage knocking him
- 11:17out because you can't quit if he's unconscious.
- 11:20Not unless you're a good big twin like this.
- 11:23A what? A good ventriloquist.
- 11:25Ventriloquist. Yeah, you can throw your boss
- 11:28like it's he is. Remind you, Oh my God, we, we,
- 11:33we play that one more time. Play it.
- 11:35One more time he. Has no advantage in knocking him
- 11:37out because you can't quit if he's unconscious.
- 11:40Not unless you're good ventriloquist.
- 11:43A what? A good ventriloquist.
- 11:45Ventilicus. Yeah, you can throw your boss
- 11:48like it's he is. Pony laughing.
- 11:51It's scarce. Not what I mean at the end is is
- 11:55incredible. It's we've, we've listened to a
- 11:58bride 10 times tonight, at least together and it just doesn't get
- 12:02Yeah, I, I said. It earlier before before we hit
- 12:05record. Like I think my favorite part of
- 12:07this clip is that everyone is just digging in on dusty and it
- 12:12felt exactly like what you hear from us 4 knuckleheads as we're
- 12:15ripping into each other when somebody usually mispronounces
- 12:18something or gets tongue tied and stutters or whatever.
- 12:21And yeah, then till the this is now.
- 12:25Now we have to say that now. Headed to to your daily
- 12:30vernacular? Oh God.
- 12:32Permanent soundboard fixture, that right?
- 12:35Next we we've got a a title match up next and it is Conan.
- 12:39Wait a minute, who won? Ice.
- 12:43Train. He was on the edge of his seat
- 12:45over there. Oh, ice Train.
- 12:46Damn it. I had $5 on Scott Norton.
- 12:51Damn you, FanDuel. Next up we've got a championship
- 12:56match and it is Hooven Tude Guerrera facing off against
- 13:01Conan. Now you might be asking
- 13:03yourself, what title was Conan holding?
- 13:05It was a the. AAA tell me anyway I.
- 13:08Got it. AAA heavyweight championship.
- 13:12Conan has No title around his waist.
- 13:15And they're calling it the Mexican heavyweight champion.
- 13:19They don't even announce AAA in any way, shape or form.
- 13:22And it's pretty timely now with the current events that are
- 13:25happening in September of 2025 with, you know, AAA being bought
- 13:30by WWE. So I, I thought it was cool
- 13:33that, you know, AAA was on it. And then they completely
- 13:35bastardized it by not putting the title on screen and not even
- 13:40mentioning that he is the AAA heavyweight champion, that he's
- 13:43the Mexican heavyweight champion.
- 13:45I thought it was so bizarre and so strange.
- 13:48And I wonder what was behind that.
- 13:51Yeah, I don't. The whole thing was bizarre, and
- 13:54to me, the most bizarre thing is not the fact that his match goes
- 13:58almost 14 minutes, but the fact that Jimmy Hart is aligned with
- 14:01Conan, and I don't recall that at all.
- 14:05It's like classic Jimmy Hart with his airbrush jacket and
- 14:09he's with Conan. What?
- 14:11You want a Conan airbrush jacket?
- 14:13I do. Imagine.
- 14:16That it's just truly bizarre, Like Conan is the last guy that
- 14:20I would associate Jimmy. Apparently he joined the Dungeon
- 14:23of Doom Conan. Why yes.
- 14:26They were, they were saying. In the beginning of the match,
- 14:28they introduced him as now part of the Dungeon of Doom.
- 14:32Oh OK, still makes no sense, but that's WCW for you.
- 14:38He'll get. Some monster guys like not
- 14:40Conan. Yeah, not bowdy, Bowdy rowdy
- 14:44rowdy yet. Was that a few years away?
- 14:47No, I don't think we're there yet.
- 14:48That's that's really when we get to the NWO.
- 14:51Red and black. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:52Aviva La Raza. So our next match to me is
- 14:57probably the most interesting match on this card and it is
- 15:01Chris Ben. The bar is the bar is real high.
- 15:03After, yes, yeah, yes, it's gone.
- 15:06And I and what was his name? Ice Pack.
- 15:08Ice pack. Sorry.
- 15:11Choo Choo. Sorry.
- 15:14Chris Benoit versus Chris Jericho in our next match goes
- 15:17almost 15 minutes. This is Jericho's first WCW
- 15:21pay-per-view, which to me that's that's the interesting part
- 15:23right there because he obviously just the rocket is strapped on
- 15:29his back from this day forward, I feel like, and, and he's the
- 15:34man young Jericho is about to take off in WCW here.
- 15:40Jericho, Peacock, WCW music here is indescribable.
- 15:45I don't even know how to begin talking about it.
- 15:48It is truly just straight up pathetic.
- 15:51It's so. Loud too.
- 15:53It really is. And Jericho always like, you
- 15:55know, laughs at himself of like how wide eyed bushy tail, like
- 15:59how he couldn't really figure out what he was doing.
- 16:03And you see it during this entrance.
- 16:05He comes out and he's just giving you the come on, let's
- 16:08go. Like really like cheesy face.
- 16:11Pure babyface, yeah. But it was like, even even he
- 16:14makes fun of himself now, looking back at how, like, lost
- 16:17he was in, you know, lack of character.
- 16:19He just came out and put on a respectable, pretty good match
- 16:23for 14 minutes and 36 seconds with, you know, the crippler.
- 16:27Yeah. This is already a much more.
- 16:29Exciting fall brawl than the one I went to go see in 2000 in live
- 16:33in person because they gave they gave away free tickets at like
- 16:38if you went to like our colleges giddy football game, they're
- 16:42like we will give you free to and when like this is also WCW
- 16:45like LN2000, right. So like giving away the tickets
- 16:49for free and I got to see like Paul Orndoff deceased in the
- 16:53ring, like I forgot what happened to him, but he's like a
- 16:55Lang Oh yeah, seizure. Holy shit and I I just learned
- 17:00this 25 years later now, but he was just like laying in the ring
- 17:03as as like the worst guys like Disco Inferno and I think like
- 17:07meet Sean Stasiak or wrestling around them.
- 17:10It was so bad. The Harris brothers were also on
- 17:13the card. Awful atrocious awful.
- 17:16I wish I got to see this. Rey Mysterio?
- 17:20Oh sorry, Benoit defeats Jericho in that match.
- 17:24Rey Mysterio is the WCW Cruiserweight Champion and he
- 17:29defeats Super Kalo in the next match.
- 17:32Super Kalo Fragilisticexpialidocious.
- 17:35He this guy? Nub from Star Wars.
- 17:40Yes, the face, the hat. That's like the top bucket hat.
- 17:46Oh, it's like backwards congle whatever it was called like.
- 17:50It. Kind of reminded me of that.
- 17:52It's like a leather cap. It's like a taxi driven cap.
- 17:55It's like it has to be stitched to the front of the mask.
- 18:00But every once in a while like the back of the hat comes up.
- 18:03Even Heenan at one point is like, I don't know how he's
- 18:05keeping that hat on. Yes, yes.
- 18:08It was a really it it, it was a 15 minute, almost 16 minute
- 18:13match. The crowd is absolutely dead.
- 18:16The match itself was like fun to watch.
- 18:18Like the in ring action was fun to watch, but 2/3 of the way
- 18:21through it I was like all right, enough's enough.
- 18:23Like, let's get out of here. Which is like the theme to a lot
- 18:27of these matches and you know it.
- 18:29Just the attention span and 15 minute long matches with some of
- 18:33these guys is too long. If you cut them in half, maybe
- 18:37the pay-per-view, the beginning half especially, would have been
- 18:39more interesting, but it is what it is.
- 18:42We got A tag team match on on deck Harlem Heat.
- 18:46Booker T and Stevie Ray are the Champions, with sister Sherry
- 18:48and Colonel Robert Parker defeating the Nasty Boys.
- 18:52Knobs and sags. This is a weird one.
- 18:55The Nasty Boys are wearing like deck down their typical ring
- 19:00gear, but it's like extra purple from what I remember.
- 19:05And that's about my biggest take away from this match.
- 19:09Why does Harlem Heat have so many valets or managers?
- 19:12Sister Sherry, Colonel Parker and like.
- 19:16It's like a lot. I don't know.
- 19:18It's completely chaotic. Sherry is Sherry on the outside,
- 19:24not as loud as she typically is, but man sister Sherry running
- 19:28around the ring. She eventually gets the, the,
- 19:31the, the the match Here she takes Colonel Parker's cane and
- 19:34smashes a Harlem Heat member and they get the 123 while the the
- 19:38ref is trying to figure out what the Hell's going on.
- 19:40This was pure chaos. It was a big man fight in WCW in
- 19:45A tag team match, and it was that whirlwind of just what in
- 19:48the world is trying to happen right now.
- 19:50And think about this news like this is a war.
- 19:53War games pay-per-view. There are two rings side by
- 19:57side. We haven't spoken about that
- 19:58just yet. There are two good calls.
- 20:01In this arena and you have all of these matches, like there's
- 20:05some spots that are a positive because you get the finish of
- 20:08the Rey Mysterio match is a that was incredible Frankensteiner.
- 20:11So he's in one ring, jumps off one set of ropes onto the other
- 20:15set of ropes and hits a Frankensteiner for the 123.
- 20:18Like that was awesome. But then.
- 20:20Credit credit to him like, you know, seeing the seeing and what
- 20:23it was and taking like I'm going to do something cool with yes.
- 20:26And a lot of the luchadors, a lot of the, the, you know,
- 20:29cruiserweights were doing stuff like that that made it really
- 20:32fun and entertaining to lots of. Different took use of it.
- 20:34Yeah, it's. Awesome, then the double ring
- 20:36doing that. No, he barely the full ring.
- 20:41Was just another obstacle for making this match make sense.
- 20:46It was very tough. Yeah, not not good, not, not not
- 20:51good at all. Our next match, which is our
- 20:54like, I guess side dish to the main event, it's the Giant
- 20:59facing off against Macho Man. The Giant has just relatively
- 21:05recently joined the NWO. Dibiase has also joined the NWO
- 21:12at this point. So now you got a 5.
- 21:14Minute European collar. Yes, it's God, I don't know,
- 21:20Dibiase. So Dibiase used to be on
- 21:22commentary for WCW, then he goes and joins, joins on with them.
- 21:27I think Matt's putting on a European collar right now, so
- 21:29I'm a little distracted. No way.
- 21:34I can't. I can't even believe this is
- 21:36happening right now. It is a billion dollar man in in
- 21:43the flesh. Or you know, any WCW guy.
- 21:46Name. Yeah, Lex.
- 21:48Luger. Luger wears it.
- 21:51You are like free. You went full WCW right now.
- 21:54Free European. Collar for WCW, all right.
- 21:58Yeah, free European collar. I can't believe the European
- 22:00collar is still like the. Uniform benefits, man.
- 22:03It's what happens when you work for a European company.
- 22:08Huh. Wow, they put the European and
- 22:09European collar. It's impressive.
- 22:13Oh God, Giant goes over in this match when they have Hogan comes
- 22:21out, he distracts the whole crew and it's just chaos, right?
- 22:29Savage loses, Savage gets beat down.
- 22:31Now let's just rewind a little bit and you got Halloween Havoc
- 22:39is right around the corner and slim Jim is sponsoring this
- 22:43event and you've got you've got the giant defeating Savage.
- 22:51Savage has earned a title shot right and he's getting the piss
- 22:56kicked out of him by the NWO for the first first time tonight.
- 23:01Mind you this this will come back to savage.
- 23:04So just like wrap your head around that.
- 23:06The fact that this guy is supposed to be a part of a main
- 23:09event and here we are. I I don't know, it just it
- 23:13doesn't make sense, doesn't add up.
- 23:16One of the things. That I like him.
- 23:17Probably was like, yeah, we're going to bury this.
- 23:20Jump. One of the things that I did
- 23:22read was instead of the Giant, it was supposed to be the
- 23:26British Bulldog coming over from WWF, which when you think about
- 23:30it, based on the way that things unravelled with the Outsiders
- 23:36and then Hogan joining Bulldog would have made such a different
- 23:40impact. If you ask me.
- 23:42I get Giant like he's big, he's young, but Bulldog I.
- 23:50Hate it Giant. Like it's yeah, I hate giant.
- 23:54It's also it's like, all right, here comes the bloke.
- 23:57Already Dungeon of Doom like. Yeah, yeah, it's not.
- 24:00He's just. Feuding with.
- 24:02He takes up so much oxygen too, like he's constantly like in the
- 24:06front. Like I, I want to see Paul and
- 24:09Nash, I'm sorry, even and Hogan to a lesser extent, like
- 24:12Hogan's. I think like I don't know, I we
- 24:15can get into this, but it's Hall and Nash and then like adding
- 24:19$1,000,000 man old ass million Ted DBRC and then the Giant.
- 24:23It just takes away from the original idea.
- 24:25And to your point, Bulldog would have been so much better someone
- 24:28jumping. Another.
- 24:29Another WWF guy, Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 24:33I see where you guys are coming from with the another WWF guy
- 24:37jumping ship. It certainly makes more sense
- 24:39than I guess the Giant joining. But I like that they give him
- 24:43this monster, literal monster that they give to the NWO.
- 24:47Because think about it, if the Giant is on Team WCW, you have
- 24:53somebody that feasibly could go up and go against Kevin Nash,
- 24:57can go against Hulk Hogan and can be a, you know, actual
- 25:02threat to the point where, all right, it makes sense to team
- 25:05him with the NWO guys to make them even more powerful.
- 25:08Because we all need the rocket ship.
- 25:11The rocket ship doesn't even do justice.
- 25:12What's bigger than a rocket ship they can strap to their backs?
- 25:15Because that's ultimately what's happening here.
- 25:16And for me, I don't, I don't mind the giant as far as Endo Bo
- 25:21goes, it gives him some personality and character that
- 25:25you know you didn't really get previously.
- 25:27Well, I have a clip from from later, then we'll get to see
- 25:30where that comes in into play. But you're right where Bulldog
- 25:34would have been a nice puzzle piece that would have fit in a
- 25:37little bit easier than trying to jam the giant into this
- 25:40scenario, but at the. End of the day, it makes sense
- 25:43because it's like for those guys who are bad guys, heels, right?
- 25:46Like it makes sense to have some giant guy that can do their
- 25:50dirty work for them too. And they don't really have to.
- 25:52They you know, it's muscle. The The thing is, is that
- 25:56Bulldog storyline wise would have made sense like these WWF
- 26:01guys coming over to take over WCW, but it just, I don't know
- 26:07the Giant it you can see how things are already off to a
- 26:12terrible start and it's already unraveling for them because
- 26:17there's no build to anything that they do with the storyline.
- 26:20And we're only two months in. It's terrible.
- 26:24It's, I don't know. I, I think I think it's, it's
- 26:27awful. I do think I I see Matt's point
- 26:31and I do like the idea of Giant because of the young talent, but
- 26:35it is what it is. There is, there is supposed to
- 26:38be fear, and they are projecting fear into the lives of every
- 26:42single WCW member, including the announced team, because they
- 26:46didn't. Show they're so they are so
- 26:48afraid. The announced Yeah.
- 26:50Offended, Afraid. Yeah.
- 26:53And mind you, throughout the entire night, and we're going to
- 26:56get to this after what's in the cooler throughout the entire
- 27:00night, they are harping on the sting situation.
- 27:03And I'm going to leave it at that because we're going to dive
- 27:06into that a little bit more before we do the extra cooler
- 27:10show. And what's in the cooler is
- 27:11brought to you by Sloop Brewing companies.
- 27:13Sloop Brewing is known for their hazy and golden Ipas like Juice
- 27:16Bomb and Supersoft. I'm a company man.
- 27:20Hey. I am.
- 27:22I am not drinking tequila. I know this is surprising to
- 27:26most. Man, we can't play freaking
- 27:28Tito's music in the background. I am I I decided to have this
- 27:33because I went to the store the other day and they had a
- 27:36different bomb box, the different variety pack of Sloop.
- 27:41And it's got the typical juice bomb.
- 27:43It's got the pilsner. It's got like a lemon peel beer
- 27:48that I haven't even tried yet. And then it's got the West Coast
- 27:52IPA. So I, I, I grabbed that.
- 27:54I'm drinking the West Coast IPA. I love, love, love that West
- 27:59Coast. But I went into my fridge and I,
- 28:02you know, we had some people over a while back.
- 28:04We went to like, I guess the first, you know, in the very
- 28:08beginning of discovering different beers other than
- 28:10light, you end up in Sam Adams land.
- 28:12So that's only thing that's in our fridge right now.
- 28:15It's the Oktoberfest pack with pumpkin bullshit in there.
- 28:19I'm all right. OK, OK.
- 28:21Go into this battle later, but in right behind it I found the
- 28:25very last juice bomb. So cheers.
- 28:27I'll be a company man too. You got me excited for the
- 28:30cheers to to Sloop. Of course you got me excited for
- 28:33Sam Adams though. The fall beer.
- 28:35I like those. The Oktoberfest I, I was
- 28:38reaching for, and then I saw this and I was like, all right,
- 28:40that's much better. Well, look at.
- 28:42That of course, because of that. Yeah.
- 28:45Mikey. Oktoberfest.
- 28:47That's right. You know me.
- 28:48I I love the fall beers. Oktoberfest.
- 28:51Sierra Nevada. It's delicious.
- 28:54Yeah. Can't go wrong with you 2025.
- 28:56Thank you. Yeah, the beer fest, right?
- 28:59Yeah, yeah. I was going to say takes me.
- 29:02Back Mike drinking Sierra Nevada.
- 29:04Takes me back to Jim's high school graduation party when he
- 29:08took a sip of 1 and he didn't finish it.
- 29:11And Jim's dad was like, what are you doing drinking this good
- 29:13beer and not gonna finish it? Wasn't that wasn't Sierra
- 29:16Nevada? That was a gross.
- 29:19I thought it was a Sierra. Nevada, Yeah.
- 29:21Regardless, you weren't ready for that kind of flavor.
- 29:23You know, not at all. And I don't blame you.
- 29:24I wouldn't have been either. We.
- 29:26Were too busy drinking, you know, grain alcohol mixed with.
- 29:29Right. Yeah.
- 29:30I can I can hear the slurp from here. 20/25/20, almost 30 years
- 29:36ago. One sipping.
- 29:37Down God. Jesus.
- 29:39I've got a Tecate and I can say this beer is pretty good.
- 29:43I love Tecate. I haven't had it in a long time.
- 29:45I'm like, this is a good like, yeah, I would take this over
- 29:47Budweiser or whatever the. Call hands down.
- 29:50Right. It's just like a straight up
- 29:53beer and it's, it's not offensive in any way.
- 29:55It's just no. And explaining something.
- 29:58Offensive. I love going to like a good like
- 30:01like like a good hole in the wall Mexican restaurant and
- 30:04ordering a latte out of a can. Yeah, hell, that sounds good.
- 30:07Ice cold. Yeah.
- 30:09Usually 5 bucks. Yeah right.
- 30:11Even better. I feel like I don't see it very
- 30:13often. I think this one came with like
- 30:15the packs. Sometimes they come with the
- 30:17pack with like Dos Aquis or I forget there's something another
- 30:20one. It's like 3 different beers and
- 30:22they're all under the same umbrella.
- 30:24Whatever, it's good, drink it. All right.
- 30:27OK, I will. Let's do it.
- 30:28OK, I will. Let's talk about our main event,
- 30:31the reason why we are here. We are.
- 30:34We are going to dive into the War Games match.
- 30:37The most dangerous match in our sport, It's our sport.
- 30:41Is the NWO which is Hollywood Hogan, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash
- 30:46and NWO Sting which they think? But we don't know that yet.
- 30:52They both have question marks on their side each side.
- 30:55Yeah, so, And they're facing off against Team WCW and we know the
- 30:59members are Lex Luger, Ric Flair and ARN Anderson.
- 31:03Now the story goes that these guys, Team WCW, was beaten down
- 31:08by the NWO in the parking lot when Sting decided to cop out of
- 31:13a limo and attack them and his buddies.
- 31:18So for like 6 days we're wondering as WCW fans, did Sting
- 31:24just join the NWO? Looks like it.
- 31:27Let me tell you, watching this stuff back, this is some of the
- 31:32most anti climatic bullshit in wrestling.
- 31:36That I've ever. Seen you've got this guy who is,
- 31:39in my opinion and most others, the face of WCW.
- 31:44OK. And he just turned on WCW in a
- 31:49way that like there's there's it.
- 31:52It didn't feel out of nowhere. It didn't feel like monumental.
- 31:55It felt like they were just trying to recreate another
- 31:59version of Hogan turning and it just, I don't know.
- 32:03It paused. Like not even live like what I
- 32:06get out of here. Popping.
- 32:09Out people with a shit on it. Yes, so they do do a good job of
- 32:13really never showing us Sting's face.
- 32:16But this, this this man who is Sting looks like Sting for the
- 32:21most part. He's got the face paint.
- 32:23He's got the hair. Obviously we know it's not
- 32:26Sting, but yeah, here we are. And team WCW was fired up.
- 32:33Luger is his his bro Flair and Arne Anderson, They can't
- 32:38believe Sting did this to them. And throughout the entire card,
- 32:43they're they're harping on this like they can't believe Sting
- 32:46turned, they can't believe Sting is now a member of the NWO and
- 32:50they're Shivani and his boys are trying to sell it throughout the
- 32:54entire night. And here we are, War games.
- 32:58We're wondering who the 4th member of the NWO is going to
- 33:01be. We're also wondering who the 4th
- 33:03member of Team WCW is going to be.
- 33:06So Sting can clearly only be on one side, right?
- 33:10Yeah, that's what's, yeah. Sorry.
- 33:15Didn't they just grab another guy if they were worried about
- 33:18staying? I know that's how I'm thinking.
- 33:19The numbers don't number right? Like if you're concerned about.
- 33:22This ice train was free ice train.
- 33:26He did win. You got the whole dungeon, the
- 33:28doom, you got the Steiner brothers still there.
- 33:30Like there are plenty of capable, like talented guys on
- 33:34the roster that they could have used.
- 33:36These are 4 horsemen. They're sticking together and.
- 33:40Wasn't Benoit A4 horseman? Yeah, Benoit was a four horseman
- 33:43at the time. So yeah, I mean, he he had.
- 33:46His horseman is the grammatically correct way.
- 33:50Let's say that. But here we are and they're
- 33:54trying to build intrigue. I feel like you guys are tearing
- 33:56this apart. I'm I'm like a little, I'm a
- 33:59little surprised by this, but. That's OK.
- 34:01Wait, I have one question. I might get to the bottom of
- 34:03this. Do you think that Luger is so
- 34:05dumb that he can't tell the difference between any wrestler
- 34:07with that has face paint on? Or is it just like the Sting
- 34:09situation where like if he's answering the door on Halloween
- 34:13and a goblin with face paint comes on, he's like.
- 34:16Sting on. You were at my door last night.
- 34:21Yeah, I you just yelled too loud.
- 34:26I probably just woke up my family.
- 34:27I'm gonna go. So, all right, so we're starting
- 34:31off this war games. Match like Lex grunt when he
- 34:34opens the door. You can't get it open.
- 34:39We have to talk about promo that Oh yes.
- 34:42Yes. That's what I was going to next.
- 34:45Whole nother level flare is flaring if you really want to
- 34:49put it in there, and Blair is. Flaring so much that one of his
- 34:52eyes goes wonky and he gets a lazy eye.
- 34:55Like so shaking his head so much that one eye goes sideways.
- 35:02What happens to him every now and then?
- 35:04Let's just listen to Flare being flare and telling us what's
- 35:07going to happen. Very shortly, very shortly, the
- 35:11horseman kicked ass. That was the best part of the
- 35:20promo, that and if for anybody that's listening, they probably
- 35:23know if you were a WCW guy that this is the Sting that is this
- 35:29promo. It's when he's coming in and he
- 35:31is talking about whether they have Sting and Man.
- 35:37It's. It's a spectacle.
- 35:39It's a. He calls Tenay Jean.
- 35:41It's great. Yeah, because like today, mean
- 35:44Gene, he's in enough. Land.
- 35:46He's dialed in. I like he's got the green robe
- 35:48on too. He's got like this little Saint
- 35:50Patrick's Day vibe going into it and.
- 35:53So he also so then he trains are green.
- 35:57We turn over to to Luger, who is just actually holy crap, this
- 36:03guy is a bumbling idiot. He says something along the
- 36:06lines of, OK, so they're cutting this promo, and then Sting comes
- 36:10in and all we see is the back of Sting for God knows what reason.
- 36:14Talk about like another storyline thing that just makes
- 36:18no sense, right? Isn't the whole idea that we
- 36:20don't know where Sting is going to turn up?
- 36:23And here we have Sting, the actual Sting, who's trying to
- 36:26tell his buddies he's, you know, not with the NWO, and he's real
- 36:31corny. You never see his face and Lugar
- 36:35points at him with like a finger and he's like a sting.
- 36:39I don't believe I can trust you because I can't trust you.
- 36:43And then I don't know if I can trust you.
- 36:45And he just starts like blabber nonsense.
- 36:49Who wrote this shit? That's right, Lugar.
- 36:52I mean, you've seen his Fireside chat.
- 36:54It's Survivor Series, right? That's right.
- 36:57Go back in the archives and find that one.
- 37:01What's your first year? What was that?
- 37:03That's 90. Oh, God, 445.
- 37:06Yeah. 9093, right? Fireside chat with the Luger
- 37:09family was another spectacle. But if you were.
- 37:12Staying here, wouldn't you just not wear your face paint and be
- 37:15like, hey, listen, these this other guy's impersonating me,
- 37:19he's going to show up in my stuff as soon as you see it, you
- 37:21know, like I'm going to go no face paint and like try to prove
- 37:24a point here. Luger is really going after
- 37:27Sting too. And he's like, I looked you
- 37:30straight in the eye when you attacked me.
- 37:32And it's it's so dry and it's almost like he's trying to read
- 37:37off of a teleprompter. I know that's not happening
- 37:39here. That's just not what went on.
- 37:41But it was so like poor reading skills while he was trying to
- 37:46like, deliver this and and Sting was no better, which was really
- 37:50a crazy part too, because you think about, you know, Sting's
- 37:54promos of the early 90s and, you know, Crow Sting.
- 37:57No sting, Yeah. Sting a No sting.
- 38:01You you get that hyped up classic wrestler style promo and
- 38:05here he's just struggling to deliver lines again and it's
- 38:08it's a little strange. And we haven't really talked
- 38:10about it. Also backstage, along with with
- 38:14Flair and Luger and Mike Tanay is also Nancy, Nancy's Benoit
- 38:23Sullivan, whatever she is at the time, and a woman and and
- 38:28Elizabeth. And then you've got ARN
- 38:30Anderson, who looks like he's ready to pinch a loaf back
- 38:33there. He.
- 38:34He hasn't said barely anything. He's just like grimacing in the
- 38:38background. It, I don't know, this, this
- 38:41whole thing just it's like, oh Jesus, where are we going with
- 38:44this guys? So.
- 38:46It was a. It was a.
- 38:49They cut back to the ring and. Except for except for flare.
- 38:52Yeah, flare is flare, Flare. Is fully flaring, but yeah, he's
- 38:57he's off the rails. So we're starting off the War
- 39:02Games match. As the lights go out the cage
- 39:04starts to lower and it's it's just Michael Buffer.
- 39:10Man this guy kills me every time.
- 39:13No announcer makes my blood boil like Michael Buffer as he starts
- 39:17to explain the rules to war games.
- 39:20Jesus Christ give me David Penzer over this guy all day
- 39:24everyday. I like buffer over the electric
- 39:27guitar theme, Fall Brawl theme, though, I'm kind of into that.
- 39:30I'm not going to, yeah. I felt.
- 39:31Buffer's telling us the story of the NWO.
- 39:34It's like, haven't we been watching?
- 39:36Why do I need this recap from you and?
- 39:41He is and it's he has two sheets of paper that are look like
- 39:45they're handwritten, like he couldn't memorize it.
- 39:48So all of the rules of the war games and it's literally like
- 39:51blue ink on a sheet of loose leaf paper that he has out
- 39:56there. And then he those and he turns
- 39:58the page and he has a second page of notes that he is talking
- 40:02through and he's standing because the cage is down at this
- 40:04point. He's standing on the stairs in
- 40:06the corner. It's very, very strange.
- 40:09You want to play the game again? How old is Michael Buffer in
- 40:121996? I'm going to go younger.
- 40:15He's 39. No, he's younger than us.
- 40:20That's crazy. I think he's, I think he's in
- 40:22his 40s. I'm going to say 45, Michael.
- 40:2750. 51 November 1944, Mr. Buffer was entering the the world.
- 40:37So I thought he looked super young and then I looked up his
- 40:41age and it was 51. I was really kind of turned off.
- 40:44I was more with with Nick on this.
- 40:46Do you think that Buffer does? Like, you know, he speaks like
- 40:50that all, you know, throughout his life, like.
- 40:54You're coming out to dinner if. Like, yeah, you know, if you're
- 40:57his kid, he's like telling me about the birds and the bees
- 40:59like that. Imagine that.
- 41:03Well. He's definitely reading it out
- 41:05of a book because he's never had sex before.
- 41:08No buffer. Definitely buffer anyway.
- 41:12Buffer. Buffer Barely Nowhere.
- 41:14Buffer is 80 years old. In 2025, he's going to turn 81
- 41:19in November. Still kicking, huh?
- 41:21So I think by now you've been listening to this episode for
- 41:26over 40 minutes and you know our feelings on this or some of
- 41:30ours. I'm not going to get into it
- 41:32now, but this is the beginnings W all right?
- 41:37This is the beginning of the end for me for this match and it's
- 41:41the entrances. It.
- 41:43Hasn't started the entrances. OK, I have no, I don't have any
- 41:47problems with the match itself, but the production value right
- 41:52And the the story writing of like for the presentation end of
- 41:56it is so bad right In war games, we're used to like the cages and
- 42:01I get it right. They don't need cages.
- 42:04They can't have cages because we we don't know who the 4th member
- 42:07is for either team. So I I completely get that, but
- 42:11all of the cart. Features at the top of the ramp
- 42:13like WWE is doing now I understand.
- 42:15Right, right. We need, we need something.
- 42:18All the participants are backstage and again they're
- 42:22trying to harp on the not knowing the 4th member and it
- 42:25just the way each member comes out.
- 42:30Like there's there's no build to it they just like announce the
- 42:33guy starts running down as the they come out early.
- 42:37Like they're not allowed to enter the ring until the clock
- 42:40hits 0. It's the arena is so cheap that
- 42:45they can't have a countdown clock anywhere in the arena that
- 42:49Penzer has to get on and say one minute remaining, 30 seconds
- 42:54remaining, 15 seconds remaining. Like it's just it's so bad I.
- 43:00Have so bad like recall, I mean we're spoiled because we go to
- 43:03you know, Madison Square Garden as a kid, right?
- 43:06That's where we go see wrestling or we see it in, you know, the
- 43:09Westchester County Center, all those times that we've talked
- 43:11about previously in White Plains, NY, but like, this is
- 43:14North Carolina and I don't know if they have like a Jumbotron or
- 43:18anything. That's something.
- 43:19It's got to be something but. Shot clock or something?
- 43:22Yeah, right. It's just the basketball hoop in
- 43:24the corner. But I it was a weird
- 43:28presentation for sure with the countdown and the one minute
- 43:31remaining. I don't mind that, but it was
- 43:34them trying to forcefully get the crowd to countdown and they
- 43:38start counting from 10 all the way down and the crowd never
- 43:41picks up on it. There's like 0.
- 43:43It's not the Royal Rumble the crowd is in.
- 43:46Any of this whole evening. Pretty.
- 43:47I don't know. I think they get hot.
- 43:49It's coming up. At the right times, I feel like
- 43:52when a big thing happens, the. Ogre they get hot for actually.
- 43:55When Macho slams the giant in their in their match, like crowd
- 44:00erupts. There are times that the crowd
- 44:02comes up, but in most times they're sitting on their hands,
- 44:04which it's strange for, you know, flair country and horsemen
- 44:08country. They get hot for Flair.
- 44:09They do get hot for Flair. They're loud for him when he's
- 44:12going nuts punching. We use, you know, House of Fire.
- 44:14Yep, Yep. But yeah, and and and I think we
- 44:18can get there. But so Arne Anderson and Scott
- 44:20Hall start off in the cage, which to me I thought this is a
- 44:23pretty cool battle like. I agree, I like these.
- 44:25Two guys like they're they, they pair up well.
- 44:28I think I I enjoyed the two of them starting off this match.
- 44:32It's also very WWF versus WCW, which is like the idea kind of
- 44:35right and it. Really works and I don't and and
- 44:39I don't recall, but they keep also harping on the fact that we
- 44:43still don't know who has the advantage.
- 44:46Right, they they're saying that they're doing a coin toss in
- 44:50the. Back.
- 44:52And they are announcing it. Why do you say that?
- 44:55There's a minute left. In NWO has the advantage.
- 44:58In the five minute session that starts out this match like a
- 45:01minute to go and then they the announcers announced that oh
- 45:05we're doing a coin toss and NWO has won the advantage via coin
- 45:09toss and then I. Want to see that coin toss Who's
- 45:11not even call it Hogan? It sounds like like a like, you
- 45:17know how you always hear how like Vince is in the headpiece,
- 45:19the earpiece of like the announcers?
- 45:21It sounds like like a non OCD version of Vince McMahon is
- 45:28planning all of this. And like on the fly.
- 45:30We, we, we forgot to do the coin toss to figure out who has the
- 45:34advantage, who's going to come out next.
- 45:36We forgot to tell the crowd that NWO has the advantage like.
- 45:41Does the, does the premise, the whole thing work for you?
- 45:44I mean like, why does one team have to have the advantage?
- 45:46Can you go like go back and forth to like 1, you know what I
- 45:50mean? Like you have advantage 21 and
- 45:52it's 32 the other way or like 2 guys come out at once.
- 45:55We're approaching 200 episodes and I, I feel like we've talked
- 45:59a little bit about like Survivor Series matches versus war games
- 46:02matches and like the idea of war games is really cool, I think,
- 46:09but there's definitely a lot of flaws to it that that don't add
- 46:12up in my could be. Better like the one fall thing
- 46:16too, you know, I don't know, something, something's off.
- 46:18They didn't think it all the way through.
- 46:20Yes. It's survival, right, it's
- 46:23submission, right or or knockout right.
- 46:25It's it's not even a pin. But anyway, like the the I have
- 46:29complained till no end of how I think the war games is extremely
- 46:32flawed and it doesn't make me want to watch because you know
- 46:36that there's in this instance, there's you know, a 5 minute
- 46:40match that happens between ARN and Scott Hall and then there's
- 46:43subsequent 2 minute intervals at that point and then the actual
- 46:47match begins when all participants are in the ring
- 46:50right? Like that's the rules of war
- 46:52games. And for me it makes me not care
- 46:55about anything that's, you know, there's no finish.
- 46:58That could surprisingly happen for the first however many
- 47:02minutes, 1st 1015 minutes of whatever it is.
- 47:05I haven't done the math, obviously.
- 47:06That's a good way to put it. Throws me off of like why do I
- 47:09why do I give a shit until the very end when right the match is
- 47:12officially begun. I plus it's war games.
- 47:15That's what it's called. I want someone to obliterate it,
- 47:17you know? And not, no, I'm not going to
- 47:18spoil what happens here, but come on.
- 47:21Poof. It's like a fucking dusty fart
- 47:25at the end of the day. So NWO wins the coin toss and
- 47:29Nash is out. Next.
- 47:31We've got Dibiase at ringside. You just fart who just farted.
- 47:35I heard that so about dusty fart.
- 47:37That was work. That was work rate.
- 47:39I could tell. I could tell.
- 47:42That made me a fart 191 episodes in.
- 47:46Oh God, I'm sorry. 15 seconds remaining after the advantage
- 47:52and Luger enters the match. Of course it's Luger and he's
- 47:56coming down and he's entering the ring like 30 seconds way too
- 48:00early. They have the countdown on the
- 48:03corner of our of our television screen and here we go.
- 48:06And they luckily they did not acknowledge it like Luke's.
- 48:10Luger doesn't care. He's going to enter the match
- 48:12early. Think they're like in the back,
- 48:15like oh man, Luger, he can't read, can't count.
- 48:17Just set him out there. Just get him out there.
- 48:19Oh God, get some water in that hair too.
- 48:22His hair's like all puffy and like it's holding on to the less
- 48:25strings of his hair. You know what, though, I got to
- 48:27say like we dump on this guy on the show all the time, but he
- 48:29looks kind of like, I'm not making a joke or anything.
- 48:32He looks like rehabilitated here after his WF time.
- 48:35And he was, he was kind of a joke.
- 48:37I'm, I'm serious here. I'm giving Lugar credit like
- 48:40it's not just. Set up for he's back home he's.
- 48:42Comfortable. Yes, he is back home and
- 48:44comfortable and he's treated like a star.
- 48:46Right, He's very much treated like a star.
- 48:49He fits in the Horseman, he fits next to Slayer, next to ARN.
- 48:52Like it. It makes sense for Luger here
- 48:55and Luger WWF is a whole nother candy arms that we dumped on in
- 49:00the past and me most of all with.
- 49:02I think they did him dirty in WWFI.
- 49:04Don't think that's, you know, news to anybody.
- 49:06And we we're not fans on this show.
- 49:08But like they did not use him well, especially in the post
- 49:12Hogan era. That doesn't make sense, but we
- 49:15could save that for another day. So Hogan enters the match and
- 49:19once again, in my opinion, this is a nightmare.
- 49:23You'd think this is WCWS first war games or something.
- 49:26The way it's shot, you don't even see Hogan coming down the
- 49:29aisle. Like again, so anti climatic.
- 49:33You don't see anybody coming out from the curtain.
- 49:35They're already like halfway down the aisle when the camera
- 49:38fraught finally shoots to all these guys.
- 49:41Now do you think? Dash is running down like the
- 49:43head of steam. Yeah.
- 49:45Do you think that there's any upgrade if they put music for
- 49:50these entrances? I think so.
- 49:51Or maybe we're just trained from the excitement of like not
- 49:55knowing who's going to come out next and like the build and
- 49:59there's no build to who's going to come out next.
- 50:01Will all their music be the same though too?
- 50:04Exactly. That's what it's exactly going
- 50:05to say. Law there that this is horseman
- 50:08all horsemen music versus all NWO music.
- 50:11You'd hear the same thing over and over again, but you just
- 50:13hear that generic rock music behind buffer.
- 50:15It's the only music that you hear throughout the entire
- 50:17event. But this is this is not WWF
- 50:21right. This is not the pageantry and
- 50:23the wildness of, you know, the new Gen. era that's happening at
- 50:27this point in time. And this is wrestling, right
- 50:30with an R, not AWR. Like that's what this is.
- 50:33And there's a whole nother vibe to it that I feel like we are
- 50:37trying to really analyze this and look at this through Aww.
- 50:41Yeah, right. You're right, so maybe it's not
- 50:43fair. I don't believe it's fair.
- 50:45I think that there are some redeeming qualities here.
- 50:48I think that there are some fun pieces of this match and you
- 50:51guys are dumping all over it. But we'll save my opinion for
- 50:54cancer in the court. Sorry, so the match I I enjoyed
- 50:57the match trial as a match. Itself, I have no problem.
- 50:59I just, I really did not enjoy the delivery of everything.
- 51:03I think. I think there's a way that they
- 51:05could have built stuff. And again, like those are early
- 51:08War games matches I loved. I think the presentation is
- 51:12really cool. I just think this is super
- 51:14sloppy. There's a lot of very sloppy
- 51:16things in it. But after Hogan comes down,
- 51:20Flair is the 6th man out, right? We now have six men in the ring.
- 51:24He wants Hogan. He calls Hogan into the ring by
- 51:27himself. They start to work alone but
- 51:29Hogan Flair with his dirty tricks uses brass knuckles on
- 51:32Hogan hits a low blow on Nash he you know classic it.
- 51:36It is a cool sequence. He knocks out Hogan with the
- 51:39brass knuckles crowds very tuned.
- 51:42He drops to his knees low blows. Nash stands up.
- 51:45Then he lifts his leg and and with like his calf gives the you
- 51:50know that low blow shot to Hall so like it.
- 51:53It's fun WCWS gaining steam as we're about to get the 4th.
- 51:57Man that. Was probably my favorite
- 51:59sequence of the. Yeah, I.
- 52:02Agree doing all this. And again, like, like, like you
- 52:05guys said, it's flair country. So of course they're going to be
- 52:09hot for him. And this is what we finally
- 52:11needed in this match, I think. Yep, Yep, there was definitely a
- 52:15ramp up once Flair comes out there and grabs his crotch and
- 52:18thrusts that Hulk Hogan. Yeah, that's where he's thrust.
- 52:22I think this day and this day and age and and I think forever
- 52:26really crowd crowd plays a huge part in things, right.
- 52:30We're about to get our first mystery partner and it's the NW
- 52:35OS 4th member and it's quote UN quote sting, right.
- 52:40The crowd doesn't buy it. There's there's no booze.
- 52:44It's it's bizarre. They're like, wouldn't the crowd
- 52:47be booing the piss out of this guy right now?
- 52:50If. They think he joined the NWO.
- 52:52Or is it? Not right.
- 52:54So they don't. There's nothing.
- 52:55They don't buy it at all. That's true.
- 52:59So we know that they didn't buy it, was it?
- 53:01Well, yeah, because that you can hear them.
- 53:04Can't we want sting? We want Sting, Yeah.
- 53:07There it is. OK.
- 53:07Thank you. So I will say this guy, whoever
- 53:11the hell this guy is, Jim Armor, finally they do a the the
- 53:17production team finally, in my opinion, does a solid job of
- 53:20never giving us a clean shot of this guy's face, right.
- 53:24It's always his back and. What's They don't give you a
- 53:27clean shot. They don't give you a clean shot
- 53:29of anybody's face. That's no.
- 53:30That's a job. Shots think he's like wide.
- 53:33Yeah, and they but he looks like Sting, right?
- 53:36His physique looks like Sting. His size, his the face paint,
- 53:40the the gear. It's you know, I'm like, OK,
- 53:43this this works except for the fact that the crowd doesn't buy
- 53:47it. So then if the crowd doesn't buy
- 53:50it like we're watching this event, The Crown doesn't buy it,
- 53:54but Shivani, Dusty and Heenan are trying to sell it like it's
- 53:57sting. That's where it just doesn't
- 54:00work, yes. How could you like, you know
- 54:04that's that's. Where the whole thing?
- 54:07Just really is a hot mess for me.
- 54:10He looks more like staying than you know, bogus razor.
- 54:14Bogus, right? I mean the face paint helps but.
- 54:18In 96 is pre HDTV as well, so you're watching on pay-per-view
- 54:23at home. You don't even really know that
- 54:26it is or is not. Or at least I would assume that
- 54:29in 19. 66 What's his name again? Jeff was Jeff.
- 54:32Farmer Jeff Farmer, He was in WCW from 93 to 94 and then in
- 54:38the Indies a little bit. He was on a he was a part of A
- 54:41tag team called Thunder and Lightning.
- 54:43I don't remember his other, his other partner there.
- 54:46It's the name is escaping me but.
- 54:48He's he's also in the 1st and 64 wrestling game, which is WCW
- 54:52versus NWO World Tour, right alongside luminaries like who,
- 54:57Michael powder keg and was the claw that lobster thing in there
- 55:01right. Yeah, I think so.
- 55:03They. Had ladder.
- 55:03Yeah, it was the first one before revenge, and he's in
- 55:07there. Jeff Farmer's in a video game.
- 55:09Are you? Are you?
- 55:11No. None of us are.
- 55:12So we can't talk too much yet. What's a good point?
- 55:17I know. I've I've moved myself in in in
- 55:20in the WWF games. Does that count?
- 55:23Yes, well now you just ruined my point.
- 55:25Thank. You So here we go here comes out
- 55:28Sting. He goes face to face with the
- 55:30fake Sting as he he tries to clean house but sting end up
- 55:37leaving WCW. It gives them a big FU like
- 55:40screw you guys you didn't leave. Very emo.
- 55:43Very emo. Is that enough proof for you?
- 55:45Yeah. Is that enough proof for you and
- 55:48he just leaves? Is this very Every Time I die?
- 55:51Is that an emo band? I I don't necessarily call them
- 55:54emo, but that is one of my favorite bands hands down of of
- 55:58ever. The Big Dirty is maybe one of my
- 56:01top five albums of all time. So yes, you, you can make fun of
- 56:06me all you want and call it Pat Curley Music.
- 56:08All right, fine, fine. How?
- 56:09All right, All right. Well, I'm gonna stop your
- 56:11tangent. Is he like screaming
- 56:12infidelities? Yeah, a little bit more
- 56:14Dashboard Confessional. Yes, that's more that's more of
- 56:17what you're talking about. So every time I die is not not
- 56:20that in any way, shape or form he's.
- 56:22He's really crying about it though.
- 56:24You don't believe it. Trust.
- 56:27Yeah, like your little brother, like did something and.
- 56:30You watch the Crow. The Butcher from the Butcher
- 56:36from AW. That's the lead guitar player
- 56:39for every time I die. Meanwhile, meanwhile, hold on.
- 56:44Hold on, guys, got you're getting off track.
- 56:46Hold on. Meanwhile, this supposed Sting
- 56:50turned on his best buddies, right?
- 56:53I know there's no cell phones but you're telling me these
- 56:57Dicks couldn't contact Sting for six days and.
- 57:01Fine, dying to get in touch with down.
- 57:03It wasn't. Me, it wasn't me.
- 57:05You'd be calling them the next day.
- 57:07It's just the story doesn't add up.
- 57:10If I said I couldn't do the podcast, yeah, If I said I
- 57:14couldn't do the podcast like tonight, and then like I
- 57:16listened and someone else was on there, be like, yo, I'd be like
- 57:20blowing you guys up. That was not me.
- 57:23And they called themselves Gigolo Jimmy Del Bay.
- 57:26Yeah, he. Did a terrible Stu Hart
- 57:28impression or something? Well, that's that's, yeah.
- 57:35So Fake Sting puts Lex in the Scorpion deathlock and he's got
- 57:40it locked in as Hogan holds him down.
- 57:42Lex passes out and WCW wins the match.
- 57:47So bogus sting gets the pin, the submission here, right?
- 57:50Yeah. They raised.
- 57:52That cage so. They got to give credit to Hogan
- 57:54doing a headlock, too. Hogan.
- 57:58Yeah, Sting. Sting has the scorpion or or
- 58:02bogus. Sting has the scorpion.
- 58:03Death lock in and Hogan comes in and locks in a front face lock
- 58:07and that's what it was. Too much for Lex?
- 58:09Yeah, yeah. Like he's sad, though.
- 58:12He was sad. Yeah, Oh yeah.
- 58:14Lugar, Lugar. Chronoid Sting.
- 58:17No Stinger. Stinger, Stinger his hands like
- 58:22reaching for him and then he gets attacked, thankfully by
- 58:24National in the aisle. And again, they raised that cage
- 58:28so fast. But then out of nowhere, where
- 58:32does where does Savage come from?
- 58:34He doesn't come from the back. He comes from like the opposite
- 58:37end of the arena, out of nowhere down the aisle to attack.
- 58:41Really. You're you're no selling the the
- 58:43the Luger piece of this too. Luger gets out of the rearing
- 58:47and is crawling on his hands and knees.
- 58:49Yeah, that's. What I'm?
- 58:50Saying yeah, it it's it's unbelievable to watch like
- 58:55literally crawling like a like a kid trying to be a dog like
- 59:00child. It was so bizarre.
- 59:02And then that's when I realized that the cage was already up
- 59:04because you're looking in the background and there's nothing
- 59:07there. And and then yes, Randy Savage
- 59:11just appears even though he just got the shit kicked out of him
- 59:14in the previous match. And here he is coming out again,
- 59:17trying to be the savior for WCWI Just.
- 59:21It's I like how Flair and Oren have like one last gasp of juice
- 59:25here. Do you know what's crazy?
- 59:27They. Essentially have to say F it
- 59:28and. Bounce.
- 59:28Yeah, they're out of there. I have.
- 59:30One simple fix to this match. How about we ditch the whole
- 59:34fake Sting bullshit and put the Giant on NWO team and Macho Man
- 59:40on team WCW. Boom.
- 59:42Then we've got a real War games match.
- 59:44None of the BS I wonder like. I wonder if the giant would fit
- 59:49in the cage like when you. Watch a good point when.
- 59:51You watch Nash, that's how it's very close to the top of the
- 59:55cage and they're they shoot it at one point where they're like
- 59:57looking up at him and it looks like his head is able to scrape
- 1:00:00the top of it. But yeah, that's a side note.
- 1:00:03Again, my opinion that would have or.
- 1:00:05Or a bigger cage. Yeah.
- 1:00:08Macho Man, but again, Macho Man pay-per-view is going to
- 1:00:11challenge Hulk Hogan for the title right in like a month and
- 1:00:15a half. Why is Macho Man not leading the
- 1:00:19charge for Team WCW? It it I don't know it it doesn't
- 1:00:24add up. Was this like, I wonder how far
- 1:00:27in advance they've wanted the crow sting to be a thing?
- 1:00:31It's like they're working very hard to get there.
- 1:00:34That's if that's what this is all about.
- 1:00:37So also in my opinion, if you're doing what you're about to do
- 1:00:41right, they beat down Macho Man to the point where Miss
- 1:00:45Elizabeth comes out and she tries to save him even though
- 1:00:48they're not aligned on WCW television right now, which is
- 1:00:51kind of like breaking kayfabe right now.
- 1:00:53And you know, they get degraded in the middle of the ring.
- 1:00:57I. Think even Bobby goes like she
- 1:00:59loves them like. Yeah, still loves them, man.
- 1:01:02Yep, she didn't even says like isn't she part of the NWO?
- 1:01:07It's it's a bizarre. But they both get spray painted
- 1:01:10on down. Their back with the NWO.
- 1:01:13What does he write on? What does he write on?
- 1:01:16NWO for life. For life.
- 1:01:17OK, usually it's just NWO. What do you like Run a sentence?
- 1:01:22Right on our buttocks. Yeah, he wrote the He spray
- 1:01:25painted the four on one cheek and the L.
- 1:01:27Yeah, it was like, yeah, man. It's the whole again.
- 1:01:31It just doesn't add up. It gets heavy heat though,
- 1:01:35because Hogan's in the middle of the ring and right as he is
- 1:01:38spray painting Liz, the entire crowd is chanting Hogan sucks.
- 1:01:42And that's when Hogan goes and grabs the mic and calls them two
- 1:01:45pieces of trash he's doing. Hogan does a lot of spitting in
- 1:01:49this era. Giant giant barking.
- 1:01:53Times. Literally barking in the ring.
- 1:01:56He he spits on Liz, directly on Liz.
- 1:01:59And Macho catches some shrapnel as well I'm sure.
- 1:02:01But now, just like 2 months ago or two plus months ago, trash is
- 1:02:05being thrown into the ring and we got the awesome cover art
- 1:02:09that Nick used for this episode. You have the NWO posing hanging
- 1:02:13over the ring. And then this feels like I, I
- 1:02:17brought the clip, but it feels like giant just finds a camera
- 1:02:21and starts talking into it. And this is the that doesn't
- 1:02:24work for me brother moment of the month because here comes
- 1:02:27Hogan the guy. Oh no, this guy can't be on the
- 1:02:30camera. It's got to be me.
- 1:02:31Let's let's take a listen. I think I'm Michelangelo.
- 1:02:35Maybe Davinci, probably the greatest artist in the.
- 1:02:39World, I can tell you. Right now, one time big man,
- 1:02:43whether you like it or you don't, it's the best thing going
- 1:02:48today. Hey, look, thank you for that
- 1:02:51movie contract too. Thank you for that movie
- 1:02:54contract. But this is like a microcosm for
- 1:02:57everything that Nick has said to this point of like how chaotic
- 1:03:01it is, how the presentation is shitty because listen to that
- 1:03:04clip. You have the Giant literally
- 1:03:06just talking into a camera face and face, and then the
- 1:03:10announcers start talking over him.
- 1:03:12And then the announcers aren't making any sense.
- 1:03:14And then Hogan butts in and Hogan is taking over the screen
- 1:03:17because nobody else can be on it.
- 1:03:19And then at the end of it you have a Hogan Hawk and a huge
- 1:03:22loogie onto the camera itself. I'm usually not a queasy stomach
- 1:03:27kind of guy that. Nasty.
- 1:03:29It was a nasty spat. That got me.
- 1:03:31It was. It was like 10 Owen Hart corner
- 1:03:34spittles, like all in one. The bookies.
- 1:03:37Spittle is gross enough. This was like, yeah, no, too
- 1:03:40much. All.
- 1:03:44Right so let's let's give cans in the cooler to this war games
- 1:03:48match. I feel like I could do a massive
- 1:03:51math equation right now like let's start off with five cans
- 1:03:55in the cooler deduct the can for this deduct the can for that I
- 1:03:59land at 3 cans in the cooler. The match was like it was well
- 1:04:04again, I said it a few times, the the match itself wasn't what
- 1:04:09I had a problem with. It was the the Sting storyline
- 1:04:13was one thing that I didn't think worked out great, but it
- 1:04:17was the the presentation of it all was just not good at all and
- 1:04:21it dropped it significantly in my eyes.
- 1:04:27I'm with the other three. That's that's what I gave it.
- 1:04:29I it was I was close to like a three 3.5 because I enjoyed the
- 1:04:33wrestling, enjoyed the match. I thought the crowd was pretty
- 1:04:36hot for things, but. Yeah, it's fun to see like, in
- 1:04:41this day and age, start to interrupt in this day and age
- 1:04:43where like, people will be dumping on how quickly WWE
- 1:04:49recently abandoned the John Cena heel turn, right?
- 1:04:52We're going to look back at that.
- 1:04:53It's fun to look at this 2 1/2 months after Bash at the Beach
- 1:04:58and the iconic Hogan turn and creation of NWO and see how
- 1:05:03quickly the wheels are coming off.
- 1:05:05I was going to ask you I I'll let you guys, I have one
- 1:05:08question and then you guys after you guys give your grades, your
- 1:05:12cans. Go ahead, Mike.
- 1:05:15Oh I actually gave it like 2.75. I can pump it up to a three
- 1:05:21though. But I agree with everything you
- 1:05:24guys are saying. Just the production is is
- 1:05:27garbage. The ending sucked.
- 1:05:30Yeah, the production is garbage. The ending sucked.
- 1:05:33The the match itself besides that was pretty good.
- 1:05:37You know it's watchable. Yeah, it's what you'd expect
- 1:05:40from all these heavy hitters like.
- 1:05:42Yes. Yeah, it was.
- 1:05:44I was entertained, but was will I go back and watch it again and
- 1:05:51again? Not really.
- 1:05:53I man, oh man, oh man, you guys, you.
- 1:05:57Guys, here's a, here's a, here's a four queued up.
- 1:06:00Yeah, 4's in the chamber, man. It's come extra 4/4 cans in the
- 1:06:04cooler. Holy crap all.
- 1:06:06Right what I wrote down, I wrote down 4 cans in the cooler.
- 1:06:09I was absolutely entertained. I like everything.
- 1:06:13And I'm not talking about the the full card.
- 1:06:15The full card was fun to go back.
- 1:06:17And just the main. But the main event to me is WCW
- 1:06:22bizarro land for the these WWF guys that are coming in and re
- 1:06:26watching it right it I loved revisiting the early stages of
- 1:06:31NWO and them coming to power really.
- 1:06:34And this was a major stepping stone in planting the flag into
- 1:06:38hey, we're taking over brother. Like this is no longer WCW and
- 1:06:42it's going to start to be NWO slash WCW, right?
- 1:06:46Like it was a fun period that I didn't remember most of the
- 1:06:52small pieces of the storytelling.
- 1:06:55And even in the beginning when you watch that opening promo, I
- 1:06:58found myself questioning sting joint NWO in the very beginning.
- 1:07:03Like, I don't, I don't remember that.
- 1:07:04And then you're like, oh, it's bizarro sting.
- 1:07:06It's yeah, bogus sting, NWO sting, whatever you want to say,
- 1:07:09Jeff, Jeff Farmer to me, I like sure.
- 1:07:15I I guess I didn't harp on the presentation as much because to
- 1:07:19me WCW especially pre 97 is still wrestling To me it's not
- 1:07:24sports entertainment. It's going to turn into that
- 1:07:26with NWO and really the the height of the of the Monday
- 1:07:30Night wars. But like this was fun to go back
- 1:07:33and see bizarroland WWF guys fighting within the origin story
- 1:07:39of NWO. Like to me it was entertaining
- 1:07:42enough to give it 4 cans in the cooler.
- 1:07:44The double sting, like we, we love double doing.
- 1:07:48What's the difference between double sting?
- 1:07:50You know, like that's to me it was, it was a fun watch that
- 1:07:54Mike said he wouldn't go back and watch it over and over
- 1:07:56again. I had fun going back.
- 1:07:58I probably. Wouldn't have fun this time, but
- 1:08:01yeah, probably over and over again.
- 1:08:02I don't. Know no.
- 1:08:04The second over is probably too much for me, but it was fun to
- 1:08:06go back and watch and I encourage somebody else to go
- 1:08:09back and watch it as well. And for any WCW guy like Tear,
- 1:08:14tear us Apart. Man, yeah.
- 1:08:15Oh, by all means. Tell us why that this was, you
- 1:08:19know, the height of of coming to power.
- 1:08:21For yeah, we have a discord. You don't need to text us, by
- 1:08:24the way. No, but in all seriousness, I
- 1:08:27think my issue with it is that I I think it could have been more
- 1:08:31impactful, right? NWO was all about these guys
- 1:08:35joining and turning and this, I think like the whole sting thing
- 1:08:40just is goofy and it could have been that much better if it was.
- 1:08:45There's just a lot of flaws with.
- 1:08:47It it like the IT the surprise factor could have been so much
- 1:08:51better if the 4th member was different.
- 1:08:54Yeah, I think it's I think it comes down to the fact and
- 1:08:57here's my question for you guys is like the peak of NW OS the
- 1:09:01bash of the beach, right. Like it's downhill from there.
- 1:09:03Yeah, right. It's downhill 100%.
- 1:09:05I mean, I mean, that's not maybe.
- 1:09:06Actually, when? When Vincent.
- 1:09:09OK Virgil, it's then is when they like gave it the paddles
- 1:09:12and it's back alive. Again.
- 1:09:13But right, like Macho Man, Macho Man loses to Hogan at at
- 1:09:19Halloween Havoc and then eventually he joins the NWO and
- 1:09:23then it's like everybody's it just, I don't know, it doesn't.
- 1:09:28Imagine. I think Hogan is the problem to
- 1:09:30be honest. Like not the dump on that guy
- 1:09:31recently deceased like. He's the one right in all this
- 1:09:34bullshit. It's so it's amazing the like
- 1:09:37the turn, that pop of the turn that him going heel is great,
- 1:09:42right? But that's the only good thing
- 1:09:43about it because then it's Hogan.
- 1:09:45Like imagine if they had one other guy come over with him,
- 1:09:48Shawn Michaels or something like that.
- 1:09:49Like like that's a totally different thing, right?
- 1:09:52And it maybe doesn't lead to like 800 people joining and just
- 1:09:57this bloated mess that the NWO becomes.
- 1:10:00I don't know. But I think I like the original
- 1:10:02idea of it, the outsiders. Like, that's the cool part of
- 1:10:05it. Agreed.
- 1:10:06So I and then this this kind of stuff that it's just the
- 1:10:09beginning of of. Yeah.
- 1:10:12You know, like. So we didn't even talk about the
- 1:10:16stipulations that NWO wanted the demands as a result of winning
- 1:10:22the demands. They had demands if they won and
- 1:10:25what? Was it again?
- 1:10:26They wanted their own show. Yes, that's what it was.
- 1:10:29And they wanted Pepe the dog. I'm serious.
- 1:10:35I think that, yeah. It's Pepe the dog.
- 1:10:38It's so crazy again. So then the, the, the idea of
- 1:10:41the surprise thing, maybe it's in my head because the next
- 1:10:43night on Nitro Xpoc, I'm sorry, 6 is ringside and debuts like
- 1:10:51it's just like, wait, you had this in your back pocket and.
- 1:10:54See that? Yeah, that's what you want.
- 1:10:56Like, come on. That's it's interesting that
- 1:10:59they give you that reveal at the pay-per-view.
- 1:11:02But isn't 6 like a last minute addition type of thing?
- 1:11:06Like isn't there a story behind Sixes?
- 1:11:08Maybe WCW that it was like on a whim in last minute?
- 1:11:12I guess I just gave myself homework for our house for our
- 1:11:16next episode. I have nothing written down, but
- 1:11:18the pens gotta come out. I like that the very last second
- 1:11:21you're like, I need your homework myself.
- 1:11:23What a what? A nerd.
- 1:11:24You're a nerd. Nerd Teacher's Teacher's pet.
- 1:11:28It's appropriate because class is over.
- 1:11:31You just gave yourself homework and All in all it was a fun way
- 1:11:35to return and get back behind the microphone and and talk to
- 1:11:38you guys and. Hang out.
- 1:11:39Nothing. Nothing gets us warmed up like
- 1:11:41crapping on WCW. Yeah, you can hit it.
- 1:11:45Let. Me tell you another thing about
- 1:11:47WCW that I hate. I hate WCW all right, all right,
- 1:11:53so thanks guys for making time. Tell all your friends that we're
- 1:12:00back, baby and we've had a lot of dumping on WCW to do and fall
- 1:12:06is fun. We are going to reaching our
- 1:12:10back pocket and dig out some random crap to to go over before
- 1:12:15we get into the thick of. You know random crap is our
- 1:12:18real. Hominia Season.
- 1:12:19I hope you, I hope you like DOA versus Blos Pariquis, because
- 1:12:23that's sweet. That's what Mike is trying to
- 1:12:25sell us, yeah. Get your shaving cream ready
- 1:12:29for, you know, your razor. You shave some backs, right?
- 1:12:33Seriously, I want I really would love to talk to people more that
- 1:12:37that are better educated on the WCW timeline.
- 1:12:41So you're more than welcome to hop in our Discord and.
- 1:12:44You think they're going to talk to us now?
- 1:12:46They're No, they're never talking to us again.
- 1:12:51Oh. God, don't forget to tell all of
- 1:12:54your friends about the Extra Cooler show available wherever
- 1:12:57you get your podcasts. Thank you guys for listening and
- 1:13:00we'll see you in two weeks. Thank you for that movie
- 1:13:03contract. Later telling you now what does
- 1:13:07this mean? Now I.
- 1:13:08Cannot believe the NWO has won This war games Tony, This war
- 1:13:12games has. Ended with the NWO.
