Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hi, Hello, and welcome back to Cardinal Territory. Longtime viewers
- 0:10Speaker 1: and listeners know this about the podcast. This show is
- 0:13Speaker 1: a pro Michael McGreevy show, So I thought, why not
- 0:16Speaker 1: live up to our hype, to our reputation, and indeed
- 0:19Speaker 1: bring him in. Michae McGreevey is our player interview guest
- 0:22Speaker 1: of the week. Mike, Nice to see it, Thanks for
- 0:25Speaker 1: joining the show.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yea, thanks for having me, of course.
- 0:27Speaker 1: So you're fresh off six shutout intings in Nashville. What
- 0:31Speaker 1: two hits, five strikeouts? Yeah, I think so that memory,
- 0:35Speaker 1: So another quality solid outing for you in Memphis. I
- 0:38Speaker 1: know a wide majority of the Cardinals fan base we'd
- 0:41Speaker 1: like to see most of your starts actually in Saint Louis.
- 0:44Speaker 1: But when we start the show, we usually go like,
- 0:47Speaker 1: let's talk about business, let's talk about baseball first, And
- 0:50Speaker 1: I thought this would be a good topic to discuss
- 0:52Speaker 1: because in our conversations when I do see you, I
- 0:55Speaker 1: thought you've handled this whole shuttle between the majors and
- 0:58Speaker 1: the miners really well. And the conversation happened in spring
- 1:01Speaker 1: training about the lack of depth in the organization and
- 1:05Speaker 1: where the Cardinals wanted you to be and where they
- 1:07Speaker 1: felt like they had to have you be. How was
- 1:10Speaker 1: that explained to you and what was your understanding of
- 1:12Speaker 1: the situation.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, So all throughout camp, I each day by day
- 1:18Speaker 3: like as like you know, like the team got smaller
- 1:21Speaker 3: and smaller with cuts and spring training and sending guys
- 1:24Speaker 3: back down to Memphis.
- 1:25Speaker 2: It was like, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, like
- 1:27Speaker 2: I might make it.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I might make it, especially with ending the year last
- 1:30Speaker 3: year in the big leagues for those last two weeks,
- 1:32Speaker 3: which was great.
- 1:33Speaker 2: It felt like of possibility.
- 1:35Speaker 3: But then when you know, like you're the last guy
- 1:38Speaker 3: hen go either way, and then they bring you to
- 1:40Speaker 3: the office and hey, like you know, like like any
- 1:44Speaker 3: other year, any other circumstances, you would make this team.
- 1:47Speaker 3: You deserve to make this team, but like we need
- 1:50Speaker 3: you down in Memphis, like to provide a little bit
- 1:52Speaker 3: of depth. And you know that's it literally stinks because
- 1:57Speaker 3: they're telling you they want you in the big leagues.
- 1:59Speaker 3: But at the same time, like you understand, like you
- 2:02Speaker 3: provide like a valuable like your a valuable.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Asset if you are in Memphis at that time.
- 2:07Speaker 3: So it's a little bit of a it's a crap feeling,
- 2:10Speaker 3: but at the same time it makes you feel good
- 2:12Speaker 3: at the same time that like, hey, like we need
- 2:14Speaker 3: you here right now to help us in a way,
- 2:17Speaker 3: in a way that impacts the team when you're not on.
- 2:20Speaker 2: A big league field. So it's a little interesting.
- 2:23Speaker 3: It's a little it's kind of a mental battle with
- 2:25Speaker 3: how you have to deal with it. But at the
- 2:27Speaker 3: same time, like at the end of the day, it's
- 2:28Speaker 3: still just baseball, and like whether I'm in Memphis or
- 2:31Speaker 3: Saint Louis, like I have to just like smile, like
- 2:34Speaker 3: I get to play baseball today.
- 2:36Speaker 1: You're righted a as a mental battle, and it's not
- 2:38Speaker 1: one that I think a lot of players could have
- 2:41Speaker 1: that kind of mindset that you do. I mean, when
- 2:43Speaker 1: we've seen you for your various spots starts, it's been great.
- 2:46Speaker 1: You know, you're very welcome in the clubhouse. Obviously, I
- 2:48Speaker 1: think everyone knows that you should be there, whether that's
- 2:51Speaker 1: the front office, the coaching staff, and your guys out
- 2:54Speaker 1: in Saint Louis. But it's not easy to hear, hey,
- 2:56Speaker 1: we want you here, but so sorry you're not going
- 2:59Speaker 1: to be here. What kind of like what kind of
- 3:02Speaker 1: mental work did you have to go through to get
- 3:04Speaker 1: to where you are now. Because each time I see you,
- 3:06Speaker 1: whether it's you know, in Saint Louis for a spot
- 3:08Speaker 1: start against the Dodgers or calling up against the White
- 3:11Speaker 1: Sox for doubleheader, like, it seems like you're just really
- 3:13Speaker 1: assured of where you need to be.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm very blessed to say I have a great
- 3:18Speaker 3: support support system, family, coaches, loved ones, Like everybody that
- 3:24Speaker 3: has been in my life and it's in my life
- 3:26Speaker 3: has always just supported me through the ups and the downs.
- 3:28Speaker 3: They've given me great mental lessons to, you know, just
- 3:31Speaker 3: get through the hard times, like giving me cliches like
- 3:35Speaker 3: the ball doesn't care how you feel, or like hey,
- 3:38Speaker 3: like you're entitled it absolutely nothing, but you have to
- 3:41Speaker 3: be grateful for everything, and just like thinking about those
- 3:45Speaker 3: like things that I've been taught throughout my life just
- 3:47Speaker 3: kind of get me through. And you know, like you
- 3:49Speaker 3: get to the big leagues and say, all you're in
- 3:51Speaker 3: heaven and then.
- 3:52Speaker 2: You just kind of smile and enjoy it.
- 3:54Speaker 3: And then when you get back down, then you know,
- 3:56Speaker 3: you could be sad about it for a day, but
- 3:59Speaker 3: then it's just back to the business.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Do you feel like the lessons that you learned from
- 4:03Speaker 1: twenty one to twenty five. I mean, the amount of
- 4:06Speaker 1: growth in four years for anyone is obviously a big deal,
- 4:09Speaker 1: but for you, particularly coming in as a top you
- 4:11Speaker 1: first round pick a lot of hype as a top prospect,
- 4:14Speaker 1: you come in in twenty four, you dominate and now
- 4:17Speaker 1: even you know, there have been maybe two innings and
- 4:19Speaker 1: your five appearances in the majors where it didn't go well,
- 4:22Speaker 1: but even after those two innings, you rebounded and you
- 4:25Speaker 1: posted and you were able to settle down. What kind
- 4:27Speaker 1: of growth have you made as a pitcher in that regard.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been a huge change since I got drafted
- 4:33Speaker 3: till now I feel like I'm a completely different pitcher.
- 4:37Speaker 3: You know, that's just the hard work that people don't
- 4:39Speaker 3: really see in the off season. It's taking care of
- 4:41Speaker 3: your bodies, taking care of the non cool things.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It's not about chasing Velo.
- 4:46Speaker 3: It's about, you know, just refining the mechanics, getting the
- 4:49Speaker 3: muscle mass up, eating the right things in the kitchen.
- 4:51Speaker 3: The off season, all that just builds up into how
- 4:54Speaker 3: you perform on the field and what the fans do
- 4:57Speaker 3: see and Ben just getting experienced, like it's awesome to
- 5:02Speaker 3: see guys fly through the miners.
- 5:04Speaker 2: It's awesome to see the guys.
- 5:05Speaker 3: That get drafted in twenty four and then all of
- 5:09Speaker 3: a sudden they're making their big league debut in twenty
- 5:11Speaker 3: twenty five. Those are special players, and like not trying
- 5:14Speaker 3: to take anything away from them, But the minor leagues
- 5:16Speaker 3: are there for a reason, and while you know they're
- 5:19Speaker 3: not the most fun place to be, they do offer
- 5:21Speaker 3: you experience. They offer you great learning lessons. Whether you
- 5:24Speaker 3: perform well or whether you perform badly in a stretch
- 5:27Speaker 3: or two. It gives you experience so that when you
- 5:30Speaker 3: do get to the big leagues, you're not figuring out
- 5:32Speaker 3: how to deal with the loss for the first time
- 5:34Speaker 3: in your career, or how to deal with a bad
- 5:36Speaker 3: ending for the first time in your career. You're still
- 5:39Speaker 3: you know how to do it because you have done
- 5:40Speaker 3: it before.
- 5:42Speaker 1: So things that you've done a lot of this year, Uh,
- 5:45Speaker 1: the drive, I think at a really good Instagram post yesterday,
- 5:47Speaker 1: ten out of ten caption.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Racking thank you fire Miles.
- 5:50Speaker 1: That was good? Is that you or was that your girlfriend?
- 5:52Speaker 2: No? That was me. That was me.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I came up that with all by myself. I just
- 5:55Speaker 3: had to make sure I got the pictures approved by
- 5:57Speaker 3: my girlfriend.
- 5:58Speaker 1: That's right, that's you know, that's a good system. On
- 6:00Speaker 1: the Instagram post we have on the caption, I was
- 6:02Speaker 1: I was proud. When when you are being brought up
- 6:07Speaker 1: and when you spot start, I mean it's very clear
- 6:08Speaker 1: like this is the role that they saw you in.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I think candidly they probably thought you were going to
- 6:12Speaker 1: be up here a lot more consistently because knock on
- 6:15Speaker 1: wood there they've been very very healthy this year and right,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and then a sport where pitch, your health is not
- 6:22Speaker 1: where it's at, and there are plenty of teams just
- 6:24Speaker 1: being decimated by injury. That's a great thing, right, But
- 6:28Speaker 1: for you, they've still found ways to bring you up
- 6:30Speaker 1: because they do want to see you when you are
- 6:32Speaker 1: one of their best arms and in a season about
- 6:35Speaker 1: the you know, the next core, it's very clear they
- 6:37Speaker 1: see you in it. So they reward you by giving
- 6:40Speaker 1: you spot starts against the Dodgers or hey come in
- 6:42Speaker 1: and throw five innings and relief against the Mets when
- 6:44Speaker 1: they were going really well. How do you prepare for
- 6:47Speaker 1: those spots starts? You know, knowing that you're probably going
- 6:49Speaker 1: to be here just for the day, but not really sure.
- 6:52Speaker 1: You're jumping from the miners to the majors and then
- 6:54Speaker 1: you're getting some really quality hitters that you faced against
- 6:57Speaker 1: and you continue to post, how do you prepare for that?
- 6:59Speaker 3: Yeah, there's really no way to prepare for it, honestly,
- 7:01Speaker 3: which I think is good at the same time, like
- 7:03Speaker 3: there's good and bad.
- 7:05Speaker 2: The bad unfortunately it's like, hey, you don't get a
- 7:07Speaker 2: good routine.
- 7:08Speaker 3: You don't really have your legs under you because you
- 7:10Speaker 3: were traveling the day before. You probably didn't get to
- 7:13Speaker 3: have a nice steak dinner that you made at your apartment.
- 7:15Speaker 3: It's driving up, stopping at a fast food restaurant and
- 7:19Speaker 3: getting up there.
- 7:20Speaker 2: But at the same time, it's you don't have time
- 7:23Speaker 2: to think. You just go.
- 7:24Speaker 3: You stick to what you know, You stick to your strengths,
- 7:26Speaker 3: and you try not to deviate from that, because if
- 7:29Speaker 3: you spend too much time trying to game plan for
- 7:31Speaker 3: Juan Soto, Shoho Tani and you're not all there because
- 7:35Speaker 3: you haven't had a weak routine in the big leagues,
- 7:38Speaker 3: you're just gonna kind of mentally exhaust yourself. And it's
- 7:41Speaker 3: been funny, especially against the White Sox. I flew in
- 7:45Speaker 3: I woke up in Memphis that day at five am.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Flight was supposed to leave at seven thirty at Memphis,
- 7:51Speaker 3: didn't leave till nine. Get to O'Hare at eleven hour
- 7:55Speaker 3: traffic down to the south side, get to the field
- 7:57Speaker 3: at twelve. Game start at one for that day.
- 7:59Speaker 2: One game one.
- 8:01Speaker 3: I blink and it's the sixth inning because Betty had
- 8:04Speaker 3: a good game. And then I'm in the game at
- 8:06Speaker 3: four forty five pitch against the White Sox and there's
- 8:10Speaker 3: absolutely no time to prepare.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I'm super tired. I want to take a nap.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Because I woke up in Memphis that day and it's like, dude, just.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Throw the sinker, throw the slider.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Let's just try to get out and hopefully we'll give
- 8:23Speaker 3: them five plus and we'll win this game. And it's
- 8:27Speaker 3: funny situations like that, so you don't have time to
- 8:29Speaker 3: think and you just trust your stuff.
- 8:31Speaker 1: And you did. You went through five cardinals, got the win,
- 8:34Speaker 1: so it all works out. That's funny though, because you'll
- 8:36Speaker 1: hear a pitcher sale the time and I didn't have
- 8:38Speaker 1: my best stuff today or you know, and it's usually
- 8:41Speaker 1: something like that where it's their routine is super messed
- 8:44Speaker 1: up and you just kind of show up at the
- 8:45Speaker 1: stadium and you're like, all right, we'll screw it, let's
- 8:47Speaker 1: see what we got. And I think that's one of
- 8:49Speaker 1: your strengths actually, to be able to just come in.
- 8:51Speaker 1: You have such a mindset that that really handles this
- 8:54Speaker 1: situation because it's weird, and I don't think anyone in
- 8:56Speaker 1: the organization would argue that this is not a weird
- 8:59Speaker 1: situation that they it's not ideal. I'm sure they've said
- 9:01Speaker 1: it to you, but you've been able to keep a
- 9:03Speaker 1: really level head and it's encouraging to see as we
- 9:06Speaker 1: get into trade deadline month and maybe or maybe not,
- 9:08Speaker 1: an opportunity opens for you at the rotation. It's just
- 9:11Speaker 1: been cool to see your growth as not just a
- 9:13Speaker 1: picture but as a person in regard. So yeah, all right,
- 9:17Speaker 1: we'll get back to Mike mcgreeby and all that fun stuff,
- 9:20Speaker 1: but first, a quick message from our sponsors at Arena Club.
- 9:24Speaker 4: We're going to take you through the latest card that
- 9:25Speaker 4: I pulled in my Arena Club slab pack AJ and
- 9:29Speaker 4: here it is. I pulled a Jared Jones card. So
- 9:33Speaker 4: Jared Jones is going to be out for a minute.
- 9:35Speaker 4: But I'm going to hold on to this one for
- 9:36Speaker 4: the long term. He was nasty in his rookie season.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Great, this is a great card to pull.
- 9:42Speaker 4: It's going to go up in value once he comes
- 9:44Speaker 4: back because this guy dealt in his rookie season, gets
- 9:47Speaker 4: punch outs, he guves the innings once he's back.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Scot, you're in it for the long term.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Don't give up on Jared Jones or this card you
- 9:54Speaker 1: got from Marina Club.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Yep, there it is. That's how you pull a slab
- 9:58Speaker 4: pack card. It's very cool. It's all fancy and digital.
- 10:01Speaker 4: You can get it sent to you physically, and if
- 10:03Speaker 4: you want to sell it right back to Arena Club,
- 10:05Speaker 4: you can do that with their buyback option right away,
- 10:07Speaker 4: or you can hold it right now. You can get
- 10:09Speaker 4: twenty percent off your first slab pack or card purchase.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Just go to arenaclub dot com. Slash foul use code foul.
- 10:16Speaker 4: We've been talking about Arena Club all season long because
- 10:19Speaker 4: they dominate the hobby.
- 10:21Speaker 1: If you buy, sell, trade, collect, go for it all right,
- 10:26Speaker 1: really fun, thrilling and sixty seconds there. Don't worry, we
- 10:30Speaker 1: only have one more so, Mike, when you think about
- 10:33Speaker 1: and this is our last like, well, it'll try to
- 10:35Speaker 1: be our last baseball question. Because you have such a
- 10:36Speaker 1: fun personality, I want to really grill you about your teammates.
- 10:40Speaker 1: What has been your favorite performance so far with the
- 10:42Speaker 1: big league club and why.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I would definitely have to say the last start in
- 10:47Speaker 3: San Francisco. That was my first time pitching back in
- 10:50Speaker 3: California since college. So I had about fifty plus family
- 10:55Speaker 3: and friends there and it was just really cool to
- 10:58Speaker 3: see them all.
- 10:58Speaker 2: After the game.
- 11:00Speaker 3: When I was watching video again, I have my last
- 11:03Speaker 3: strikeout from like the side view, I see like Pagro
- 11:07Speaker 3: like catch the ball, and all of a sudden, I
- 11:09Speaker 3: just see this guy in a white jersey just stand
- 11:11Speaker 3: up immediately before and everybody else. I'm like, there's my dad,
- 11:16Speaker 3: and like then you see like the other fifty people
- 11:19Speaker 3: stand up.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I'm like, ah, that's where they were sitting that day.
- 11:21Speaker 3: So it just means it meant a lot to be
- 11:23Speaker 3: able to pitch back in the home stay there, to
- 11:26Speaker 3: have a game like that end the season after two
- 11:29Speaker 3: just amazing weeks in the big leagues, despite how that
- 11:33Speaker 3: year had started as well for me, just coming off
- 11:36Speaker 3: to a very slow start, not thinking I was going
- 11:38Speaker 3: to make my debut in twenty four and for it
- 11:41Speaker 3: to end like that was just like kind of the
- 11:42Speaker 3: cherry on top to a great year.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Remind me, was that the final game of the season?
- 11:46Speaker 2: It was, yeah, okay.
- 11:47Speaker 1: So what I do remember about that game is we
- 11:50Speaker 1: talked to you after the start and you're, you know,
- 11:52Speaker 1: hyped up. It's like a bittersweet feeling because everyone last day,
- 11:56Speaker 1: but here you are all smiles and I ask you, like, hey,
- 11:59Speaker 1: what's what was you know, what stood out to you
- 12:01Speaker 1: about this game? You know, great start to end the season,
- 12:04Speaker 1: features looking good and you said that you were pretty
- 12:07Speaker 1: amped up because the Giants did a flyover that day.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I was not expecting me to say that.
- 12:15Speaker 2: About the flyover.
- 12:16Speaker 3: I was still warming up in the bullpen during the anthem,
- 12:19Speaker 3: and you know, the Jets fly by, and like I
- 12:22Speaker 3: look at Dusty and like that was so sick.
- 12:24Speaker 2: He's like this kid? What is this kid? Like thirteen?
- 12:27Speaker 2: Like he's like focus for Dusty.
- 12:30Speaker 1: I can picture that face too. But you were super
- 12:32Speaker 1: excited about it, for that's the first thing you said
- 12:34Speaker 1: after that start. I was like, oh, that must have
- 12:36Speaker 1: been a lot to him.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 12:39Speaker 1: All right, So let's let's talk a little bit about
- 12:40Speaker 1: your teammates. And this is fun because we can do
- 12:42Speaker 1: both Saint Louis and Memphis. We'll start with an easy
- 12:45Speaker 1: one because you are in the minor leagues and there's
- 12:47Speaker 1: a lot of weird transportation. It's beat writer travel. There's
- 12:52Speaker 1: no charter like, for example, I didn't get into Chicago
- 12:55Speaker 1: until eleven thirty last night because my flight was delayed
- 12:57Speaker 1: three hours. So you know all of this very well.
- 13:01Speaker 1: You do a lot of driving. You do a lot
- 13:02Speaker 1: of road trips. If you have to create your ideal
- 13:05Speaker 1: road trip car, okay, and it can be major league
- 13:08Speaker 1: and minor league teammates. Who's in the car? Who are
- 13:11Speaker 1: you road tripping with?
- 13:11Speaker 2: You have four?
- 13:14Speaker 3: Geez, that's tough, so like just like a minivan full
- 13:20Speaker 3: of like four like four other guys. Okay, gosh, you
- 13:26Speaker 3: could probably throw Gavin Collins in there. He's a good time.
- 13:35Speaker 3: I put Andre Grenio in there as well. I'll go
- 13:42Speaker 3: I'll go two more.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Here.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I wouldn't. I wouldn't put Quinn in there.
- 13:50Speaker 3: He'd be boring talking about investment banking and how he
- 13:53Speaker 3: should have been an investment banker. Dang it, who I
- 14:00Speaker 3: put Darwin morero in there, our pitching coach, pitching coach,
- 14:04Speaker 3: oh yeah, oh yeah, good times, and then probably Brody Moore. Okay, yeah,
- 14:15Speaker 3: but then if I put Brody Moore in there, I
- 14:16Speaker 3: also have to put Jimmy Crooks in there as well.
- 14:18Speaker 3: So maybe I'll maybe I'll just be a player only
- 14:20Speaker 3: I'll kick Darwin out, Jimmy Crooks and Brody.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Moore as well.
- 14:25Speaker 1: You can have Darwin drive, yeah, exactly. So a funny
- 14:28Speaker 1: story about Andre Gonno. We saw him make his debut
- 14:30Speaker 1: in Milwaukee. Just I love debuts. I get so emotional,
- 14:35Speaker 1: but you know, I'm like trying to be a professional,
- 14:36Speaker 1: like don't cry for these guys, but inside in like
- 14:38Speaker 1: crying of happiness. And he was just a media delight.
- 14:41Speaker 1: It was so pure the emotion. I mean, he almost
- 14:45Speaker 1: basically started tearing up before like talking about it again,
- 14:48Speaker 1: and I was like, you're gonna start a chain reaction here.
- 14:50Speaker 1: But he did mention that you guys are usually roommates correct.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Uh, yeah for the most part, sometimes just with how the.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Room situation works, loose up and who's not like, but yeah,
- 15:00Speaker 3: I've been roommates with Andre plenty of times in our
- 15:03Speaker 3: minor league career.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Okay, so correct me if I'm wrong. When you got
- 15:06Speaker 1: your call up, he was your roommate, correct.
- 15:09Speaker 2: For Thomas Conor.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Yeah, Andrea was my first road roommate in low A.
- 15:15Speaker 3: So like he because he played in the Cape, like
- 15:19Speaker 3: straight from the draft, they put him in Palm Beach immediately.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I was like three weeks after the draft.
- 15:25Speaker 3: They build me up a little bit, and then I
- 15:27Speaker 3: get put in low A and so in Fort Myers
- 15:30Speaker 3: and Dunneat and Andre Gernio is my first minor league
- 15:33Speaker 3: baseball road roommate and so him for me to be
- 15:37Speaker 3: in the room when he got the call from DJ,
- 15:39Speaker 3: I was like, no way, this is so cool.
- 15:41Speaker 1: That's what it was. I knew there was like a
- 15:43Speaker 1: starting moment for you, but you got to you got
- 15:45Speaker 1: to hear the call.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and literally an hour and a half before, I'm
- 15:50Speaker 3: like geez man, like we're like we're talking about, like
- 15:53Speaker 3: you know what the future might hold. How he's pitching,
- 15:55Speaker 3: like dude, Like you're pitching great, Like, dude, I want
- 15:57Speaker 3: to be surprised if you get called up soon, man,
- 15:59Speaker 3: like you deserve it. And we had a day game,
- 16:02Speaker 3: so I'd take a nap, like before I was gonna
- 16:04Speaker 3: get some dinner later and then some kind of in
- 16:07Speaker 3: and out of sleep, and all of a sudden, I
- 16:08Speaker 3: just hear, hey b JA. I'm like, oh my god, like,
- 16:12Speaker 3: oh my god, and like he like looks at me
- 16:14Speaker 3: like what I'm like, it's literally the call.
- 16:16Speaker 2: It's the call, like.
- 16:17Speaker 3: And then he's like, what what You're kidding, You're kidding,
- 16:21Speaker 3: And so.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Then I'm like, oh my gosh. I started freaking out.
- 16:25Speaker 1: That's awesome, that's great, my Because he was telling that
- 16:27Speaker 1: story in Milwaukee and he was also mentioned that he
- 16:30Speaker 1: saw a number from Memphis, Soj's number saved.
- 16:33Speaker 2: He was like, well, he should not have out of
- 16:37Speaker 2: himself like that.
- 16:38Speaker 1: I know he needs more media training.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you were like there too.
- 16:42Speaker 1: You were twenty one.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I was like that, Yeah you were.
- 16:46Speaker 1: I remember our first we were on the field and
- 16:48Speaker 1: you were great. You still are great. You still are
- 16:50Speaker 1: like a top three in the clubhouse, but you're more
- 16:53Speaker 1: polished now.
- 16:54Speaker 2: I was twenty one.
- 16:59Speaker 1: No, now you're now, You're still authentic. This is what
- 17:01Speaker 1: I really like about getting to know players, because I
- 17:04Speaker 1: can imagine it's really hard to all these cameras are on,
- 17:07Speaker 1: especially after a start that doesn't go well, oh yeah,
- 17:09Speaker 1: turned around, cameras in your face, all these people like
- 17:12Speaker 1: crowding your locker. Especially in Saint Louis there are a
- 17:14Speaker 1: ton of like hoverers around and you're just like, okay,
- 17:19Speaker 1: but you always do such a good job of just
- 17:22Speaker 1: talking and being in communicating and just being authentic. Do
- 17:25Speaker 1: you is that does that come naturally? Do?
- 17:27Speaker 3: I like to think so My dad when like just
- 17:31Speaker 3: when I was younger, he'd always be like you always
- 17:34Speaker 3: pretended to be like an interviewer, like a reporter, like
- 17:38Speaker 3: Michael McGreevy, you went two for three in your Litterle
- 17:41Speaker 3: League game to day, how'd you feel?
- 17:42Speaker 2: So like we'd do a little fun.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Like, well, Dad, you know, I really saw that ball
- 17:45Speaker 3: way and so just stuff like that, I guess kind
- 17:50Speaker 3: of trains you a little bit. But hearing all the
- 17:52Speaker 3: cliches from movies like Bull Durham and stuff like that,
- 17:55Speaker 3: like you try to sprinkle those in as much as
- 17:58Speaker 3: you can as well, and just you know, like the
- 18:00Speaker 3: people that get it, like, oh no, I get it.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Miles. Michael was one time. He does this every now
- 18:05Speaker 1: and then. He playstle games, but he did an entire
- 18:07Speaker 1: meet post game scrum with just cliches, and I was,
- 18:11Speaker 1: I was, I was like, are you kidding me right now?
- 18:13Speaker 1: Are you serious?
- 18:14Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 18:15Speaker 1: Those guys are fun. Do you have a favorite veteran
- 18:19Speaker 1: in the Saint Louis Clubhouse?
- 18:22Speaker 2: You know, you could say all of them.
- 18:23Speaker 3: I feel if I don't touch on all of them,
- 18:25Speaker 3: they're gonna next time I see them, they're like, oh,
- 18:27Speaker 3: no love for me, but true. I think in my
- 18:31Speaker 3: minor league career, I mean unfortunately, because I've seen Steve
- 18:35Speaker 3: the most and with him rehabbing the last couple of years,
- 18:38Speaker 3: and you know, thankfully he's up there being healthy now
- 18:40Speaker 3: and doing great. I really like talking with Steve a
- 18:43Speaker 3: whole bunch. He's always been super supportive, always just watching
- 18:47Speaker 3: my bullpens. He stays to watch my game sometimes when
- 18:50Speaker 3: he was rehabbing and we're all like, dude, go home,
- 18:52Speaker 3: like you don't need to be here, and he just
- 18:55Speaker 3: watched all of us. I texted him the other day
- 18:58Speaker 3: after his ten years and stuff and got back to me,
- 19:00Speaker 3: it's just guys like that are special, and like it's
- 19:03Speaker 3: guys like that make an impact on you, like starting
- 19:06Speaker 3: out in your career and to see how they've had
- 19:09Speaker 3: success and they like kind of give it right back
- 19:11Speaker 3: to you, like it's just awesome to see.
- 19:13Speaker 1: That's awesome Matt's. Matt's is one of the good ones
- 19:15Speaker 1: you have. You have a great clubhouse. I don't spend
- 19:17Speaker 1: actually I've got a Memphis at all this year, but
- 19:19Speaker 1: both Saint Louis and down there are just a bunch
- 19:21Speaker 1: of good guys. It's it's fun to be around you all,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and it's just fun to just see how the careers prosper.
- 19:29Speaker 1: I think this year specifically watching guys like Polante and Libby,
- 19:32Speaker 1: they're both on the show together. They actually did a
- 19:34Speaker 1: really good job. I was so proud to see where
- 19:37Speaker 1: you all started because twenty one was my first year
- 19:39Speaker 1: in the organization, and to get to know you all
- 19:41Speaker 1: as you advanced through your careers. To see the success
- 19:44Speaker 1: that Libby's having as a starter, to see Polante start
- 19:46Speaker 1: to figure things out as well, and to know that
- 19:48Speaker 1: you're next in line, like that's really cool. I think
- 19:50Speaker 1: from my perspective, how much do you enjoy getting to
- 19:53Speaker 1: be ideally the next core of this Cardinals team and
- 19:56Speaker 1: knowing just one how much of responsibility that is. But
- 19:59Speaker 1: also it's kind of an honor to be able to
- 20:01Speaker 1: be trusted this early in your career to help build
- 20:03Speaker 1: something back up in a town like Saint Louis.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, I mean it's definitely big shoes to fill.
- 20:09Speaker 3: I mean, you got rich baseball history in Saint Louis,
- 20:12Speaker 3: so there's high expectations. But they're high expectations for a reason.
- 20:17Speaker 3: And seeing the guys that I've come up with, people
- 20:20Speaker 3: ask me, oh, have.
- 20:21Speaker 2: You ever played with Mason Win?
- 20:22Speaker 3: Like I played with Mason Win and Hia in twenty
- 20:24Speaker 3: twenty two, Like I've been with him in Peoria and
- 20:27Speaker 3: with Jordan, and like you add like a couple more guys.
- 20:29Speaker 2: You get to Memphis and you see all these guys.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Like Ivan Herrera Libby, like guys that are going to
- 20:35Speaker 3: be like the next generation here in Saint Louis, and
- 20:37Speaker 3: you see like their best games when we're in the minors,
- 20:40Speaker 3: You're like, oh, my gosh, Like this guy is insane,
- 20:42Speaker 3: Like this guy through his fuel, this guy hits bombs,
- 20:46Speaker 3: and you just see, like you know, like while there
- 20:50Speaker 3: is like, oh, expectations are high, it's like, yeah, my
- 20:53Speaker 3: expectations would be high too if I saw what these
- 20:55Speaker 3: guys are doing in the minor leagues and when I
- 20:57Speaker 3: know they can do in the big league, so it's
- 20:58Speaker 3: super encouraging and just to have my name thrown in
- 21:01Speaker 3: that has just awesome to see as well.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Definitely, and I know I speak for myself, but also
- 21:06Speaker 1: the majority of the best fans in baseball, they're very
- 21:08Speaker 1: excited to see you back again, hopefully soon. All right,

- 22:19Speaker 1: All right, before we wrap it up here, because you
- 22:22Speaker 1: have well you're pitching today, but you have a game
- 22:24Speaker 1: in Nashville. I have a full off day in Chicago.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I can see the water right now.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Do you want it?
- 22:29Speaker 3: You want to trade? Do you want to trade? I
- 22:31Speaker 3: get the off day. You have to go watch the
- 22:33Speaker 3: game in Nashville.
- 22:34Speaker 1: This off day was like my reason to live when
- 22:36Speaker 1: I was suffering through Pittsburgh. Okay, we were all suffering
- 22:39Speaker 1: through Pittsburgh, Okay we can say it. I just thought,
- 22:41Speaker 1: just get to Thursday, get to the off day. Yes,
- 22:44Speaker 1: I'll be taking full advantage of that. But some things
- 22:47Speaker 1: you might be like to do on your off day.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Oh great segue by me is I don't know if
- 22:51Speaker 1: it's fair to qualify you as would you say you're
- 22:53Speaker 1: a scratch golfer.
- 22:54Speaker 2: No no, no, no, no no.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Sometimes you're eighteen birdies, but you know you don't. You
- 22:59Speaker 1: don't finish your sometimes, you.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Know, sometimes the eighteen birdies, I'm like, oh, I'm gonna
- 23:04Speaker 3: track it on eighteen.
- 23:04Speaker 2: I don't.
- 23:05Speaker 3: I definitely don't use eighteen birdies all the time, but
- 23:07Speaker 3: when I do, it's always when I play a terrible round,
- 23:10Speaker 3: I'm like, you know what, I'm just.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Gonna keep this one of myself.
- 23:12Speaker 3: I don't need Katie to see my kind of shot
- 23:16Speaker 3: ten over today. But yeah, like I haven't been playing.
- 23:19Speaker 3: I got to play a good amount in spring. I
- 23:21Speaker 3: played once the day that the Battle of the Birds
- 23:24Speaker 3: happened in Memphis, and then like when I got called
- 23:29Speaker 3: up for that met series, I just put my golf
- 23:31Speaker 3: clubs in my Saint Louis apartment and because I just
- 23:34Speaker 3: don't want them sitting in the back of my truck
- 23:36Speaker 3: in Memphis.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Just din't.
- 23:37Speaker 3: I want to put all my extra stuff in my apartment.
- 23:39Speaker 3: I like to see the back of the back seats
- 23:41Speaker 3: of my truck and not have it just cluster with
- 23:44Speaker 3: all my extra stuff that I don't really use or wear.
- 23:47Speaker 2: So just put those away.
- 23:48Speaker 3: But so I haven't been able to play a whole bunch,
- 23:50Speaker 3: so I can't really say I'd be any good once
- 23:53Speaker 3: I get out to the chorus the first time.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Soon.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Well, usually if you haven't played for a while, your
- 23:57Speaker 1: first round back are like kind of dialed in. I
- 23:59Speaker 1: think that's what's helpening. I hope happens to me training.
- 24:02Speaker 1: But if you are creating your ideal like your ideal round,
- 24:07Speaker 1: your ideal foursome, who are your which three are you taking?
- 24:11Speaker 1: It can be for vibes, it can be for skill,
- 24:12Speaker 1: it can be whatever you want.
- 24:14Speaker 3: There's there's a lot of different ways you can go.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Gavin Collins is a very golfer. Actually I actually played
- 24:21Speaker 3: with three of them that actually I played two times,
- 24:25Speaker 3: once the Battle of the Birds by myself and another
- 24:27Speaker 3: day at Mira Michi Golf Course in Memphis. On one
- 24:32Speaker 3: other off day, it was Michael Factor, our tech guy,
- 24:36Speaker 3: Peter Mooney, and Gavin Collins, and all three of them
- 24:39Speaker 3: just kicked my butt like really insane like, and I
- 24:43Speaker 3: had to pitch the two days later and I was
- 24:46Speaker 3: just gassed. I was like, I'm calling after it was
- 24:48Speaker 3: super slow. They keep giving me crab. I'm like after nine,
- 24:52Speaker 3: I was like, guys, like, this isn't fun. I'm waiting
- 24:55Speaker 3: two hours for the force them in front of us
- 24:58Speaker 3: to hit ten putts.
- 24:59Speaker 2: I'm like, this is not fun. I'm going home.
- 25:01Speaker 3: And they're like, all nine home Mic nine, Wow, he's
- 25:06Speaker 3: calling it today, And yeah, I'm over this. But three,
- 25:11Speaker 3: all three of those guys are absolute sticks. And like
- 25:14Speaker 3: I say, me and Gavin are about the same. And
- 25:18Speaker 3: then Michael Factor and Peter Mooney, like those guys can
- 25:21Speaker 3: swing it on the golf course and it was fun.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Michael Factor Almos hit a hole in one and I
- 25:26Speaker 3: was like, oh my gosh, these guys are dialed. So
- 25:29Speaker 3: I love to do that again, but I need to
- 25:32Speaker 3: get my clubs again from Saint Louis, and hopefully when
- 25:34Speaker 3: I do get the opportunity to get my clubs in
- 25:36Speaker 3: Saint Louis, hopefully I don't have the opportunity to bring
- 25:38Speaker 3: them back to Memphis.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Next.
- 25:40Speaker 1: There's that part when when you're back in Saint Louis,
- 25:42Speaker 1: it's for good. Hopefully, Yeah, you're going I don't know challenge.
- 25:46Speaker 1: I feel bad because Pedro catches a lot of un
- 25:48Speaker 1: I'm very sure.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Me and Sianni still laugh about that video.
- 25:55Speaker 1: That was one of my favorite things.
- 25:57Speaker 3: That was unreal and like for me and Sianni to
- 26:00Speaker 3: start out that day, we started off Birdie Birdie and
- 26:03Speaker 3: Pedro had like a ten and that's all the people
- 26:07Speaker 3: saw on the video and Pedro actually turned it.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Up like at the next couple holes. They just never
- 26:13Speaker 2: used the footage.
- 26:14Speaker 1: No I would.
- 26:15Speaker 2: They went like bogie parr, parr after the ten that
- 26:19Speaker 2: he had on the first hole.
- 26:21Speaker 3: So me and Sanna just like, dude, it had one
- 26:25Speaker 3: opportunity Pedro and you're stunk.
- 26:28Speaker 1: That is incredible. Poor Pedro. It's gonna be all right though.
- 26:32Speaker 2: He's catch and hit. He doesn't need to hit the
- 26:36Speaker 2: golf ball.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Right, that's an off season thing for sure, exactly all right.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Mike McGreevey, thank you so much for doing this. I
- 26:43Speaker 1: know that you are a Cardinal's fan delight, and I
- 26:45Speaker 1: really appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to
- 26:47Speaker 1: uh to come on the show. Hopefully the next time
- 26:49Speaker 1: we talk it's you're back in Saint Louis. We'll keep
- 26:52Speaker 1: our fingers crossed for that. Is there anything you will
- 26:55Speaker 1: would like to say to our loyal listeners. You're a
- 26:57Speaker 1: Cardinal Territory.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Oh, I can't wait to see you guys next time.
- 27:00Speaker 1: I'm above awesome. Yeah, it'll be great, hopefully again, sooner
- 27:04Speaker 1: rather than later. All right, Bernie and I are back,
- 27:07Speaker 1: ideally Sunday. Apparently at Sunday night Baseball goes to show
- 27:11Speaker 1: you guys again. I'm only focused on the off day.
- 27:13Speaker 1: We'll get to the CUB series on Friday morning, so
- 27:16Speaker 1: ideally Sunday night, maybe Monday morning, we'll see, but we
- 27:19Speaker 1: will have an episode recapping the CUB series and hopefully
- 27:21Speaker 1: goes a lot better than whatever we just watched in Pittsburgh.
- 27:24Speaker 1: For Michael McGreevy, I'm Katie Woo. This is Cardinal Territory.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Thank you so much for watching
