- 0:00Welcome to the Bearcat chat, a podcast for everything
- 0:04Scottsbluff School. Hello everyone and welcome to
- 0:14the second ever episode of the Scottsbluff Public Schools
- 0:18Bearcat chat, that is the podcast about everything related
- 0:22to Scottsbluff public schools. And if you're joining us for the
- 0:26very first time, welcome, if you listen to our last episode, then
- 0:30great, you came back, you're here for another one of these
- 0:34and this is going to be a really special episode.
- 0:36We have today, we're going to make some history for the first
- 0:39time ever. I'm going to have students On
- 0:42this podcast. So I'm very excited about that.
- 0:45So we will go ahead and get started with my first set of
- 0:49guess. So, first, guess I have here are
- 0:52from Scottsville high school and I'm going to go ahead and let
- 0:55you guys introduce yourselves. Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:59I'm Chris Browning or mr. Bruni, and the social science in
- 1:02Joyce's teacher here at the high school.
- 1:03And I'm Dena Rapture. I'm, I'm the team member of the
- 1:07Esports team which he coaches. And yeah, that's what we're here
- 1:11to talk. Talk about this theme for this
- 1:14month's episode is what's new in November.
- 1:17So we're going to talk about some of the newer activities
- 1:21that we have at Scottsville high school and I say newer because
- 1:25not everything that we're talking about today is brand
- 1:27new, but I think they're the ones that maybe not everybody
- 1:31knows about or knows about the things that we that we do here.
- 1:34So, I'm just going to go ahead and Jump Right In.
- 1:37And why don't you for the people out there who maybe don't know
- 1:41what? Esports is why don't you guys
- 1:44tell us in your own words? What Esports is?
- 1:46Well quite simply it's competitive video gaming at the
- 1:50surface definition, Esports has become a multi-billion dollar
- 1:56company, your business. So we jumped on board and as you
- 2:00see in many schools, different states Esports is a growing
- 2:04thing. If people are willing to watch
- 2:06and spectate, then people are willing to take interest and
- 2:10really what it comes down to is called Ages have really started
- 2:13opening up e Sports programs and allowing scholarships to get
- 2:17different kids enrolled which opens up the lane then for the
- 2:22high schools as well. The start teaching these kids
- 2:24how to play these specific video games at a competitive level.
- 2:28So that's what we do. We practice we train.
- 2:32There's all different kinds of things, you need to learn.
- 2:35Again, Esports has become a massive phenomenon, and a lot of
- 2:38these games are growing significantly.
- 2:40And That kind of just give a definition more of these games
- 2:45are strategy, based teamwork, communication type things.
- 2:49It's not just or not at all at the high school level, your Call
- 2:53of Duty type game that people have in mind, when you talk
- 2:56about video game, certain are what, what game is, why don't we
- 3:00start there? And why don't you tell me, what
- 3:02kind of games that you play or which ones you competed?
- 3:06Well, I think of Legends, which is a strategic top-down game it
- 3:11It's a teams of five and it's almost like a capture, the flag
- 3:14type game. There's three different like,
- 3:17Lanes or people go down and they compete in their Lanes fight
- 3:21against each other, and whoever wins takes their like home base.
- 3:26And that is whoever is Victoria's.
- 3:29It's whoever takes the other teams base, I always, like to
- 3:32kind of describe League of Legends as chess with multiple
- 3:36moving Parts where you don't have the time to make up your
- 3:39decisions, you have to make those decisions.
- 3:41And Split seconds, so knowing what to do based on what
- 3:45everyone else is doing. It's a lot of strategy and a lot
- 3:49to coach. Well, considering that, you
- 3:51know, I grew up playing Pacman. This is probably a little bit of
- 3:56a different level, I don't know how well I'd be competitive it,
- 4:00something like this. So what else do you play any
- 4:03other games as far as competition goes?
- 4:07But I do play like Minecraft and I play some other games story.
- 4:11Based games. But the only one I competed is
- 4:14we here at the high school. We do offer five different games
- 4:18that we compete in. We go through Nebraska Esports
- 4:21Association. So all a lot of the school's, I
- 4:24think we're up to 80 plus schools have joined this
- 4:27organization so we do compete in division once we oftentimes
- 4:31lineup, matches against Lincoln Omaha, all the schools within
- 4:35those two towns, North Platte Kearney Grand Island and compete
- 4:40against each other. But the games we compete in
- 4:43during our fall, season are Valor and and Rocket League.
- 4:47Those Seasons just wrapped up the winter season which we just
- 4:51held tryouts for is Mario Kart and then in the spring season we
- 4:55offer League of Legends and Smash Bros.
- 4:59Super Smash Bro. Okay I guess I've played at
- 5:02least two of these games. I really I love Mario Kart that
- 5:06one I could come from a out for that one.
- 5:08That would be headed. He's got some rainbow road going
- 5:13on and stuff. Yeah, I yeah, II would believe.
- 5:18It's so what is practice like? Well, practice for, I didn't
- 5:24speak for league. Is we have our own room, we go
- 5:27all in there. We split the team 25.
- 5:29If we playing against each other, sometimes we just play
- 5:31against people better, not a team, but usually we play
- 5:35against each other. So we can practice what it's
- 5:36like facing off another Esports team, so we get most teams and
- 5:40then we just play He's, he stands around and watches us
- 5:45play, makes his tips and anything, but for the most part,
- 5:47we're just all together in our team's talking to each other
- 5:52strategizing. It's, it's really intense it
- 5:56well. So did go on that League of
- 5:59Legends. Again, as I said, there's a lot
- 6:00of decisions that need to be made in small amounts of time.
- 6:04And the only way, you know what the right decision is is by
- 6:06continuing to play and be coached.
- 6:09So I stand over their shoulders and I give them hints.
- 6:11Sore tips and say, this is what you need to look out for these.
- 6:14People could be coming, these people are missing and and all
- 6:17these different things involved in the game.
- 6:19What's really interesting, is after we have these matches
- 6:22against each other, we save the replays.
- 6:25And just like you would with football review, we go in our
- 6:28cats claps and we break down what we did, what we could be
- 6:32looking for, what we need to do better.
- 6:35And that's, I'm really into the game.
- 6:37So I've taken the time of my personal life, you know, to try
- 6:39to continue to grow and get better at Game, which just helps
- 6:43with coaching these kids. One of the greatest things is
- 6:46that wincc just here in town, as well as a number of other
- 6:49schools. I've already received emails
- 6:51from offer scholarships for League of Legends.
- 6:55Especially this specific game has had more viewership during
- 6:59their world championships and the Super Bowl but it is again A
- 7:03world championship. So you have Brazil vs.
- 7:07France in Korea versus whoever else Germany.
- 7:11So There are a lot of people that watch a lot of people that
- 7:13are into it, or practices is unlike any other activity or
- 7:19sport here in shs. But there's always something to
- 7:24learn and a roughly, how many students participate at this
- 7:28time. So we have it seems to be
- 7:31growing as we continue a continue to have tryouts for
- 7:34different seasons. But if I were to put a rough
- 7:36estimate, I would say, 35 between all the season.
- 7:39So it's a pretty good number. We do.
- 7:41That because we have 12 PCS available to us and one Nintendo
- 7:46switch. So we can't just have a ton of
- 7:49kids in there. We only have so much equipment
- 7:51to practice and that's how we would like the 12 PCS are
- 7:55incredible. It gives us what we need again,
- 7:58League of Legends is teams of five, so we can have two teams
- 8:02playing against each other. While one person is keeping
- 8:04score on an available computer and the other person is
- 8:09recording or streaming the matches.
- 8:10So, the l've PCS is great, but we do have to put somewhat of a
- 8:14limit on the number. We're hovering around 35
- 8:17currently. Okay.
- 8:18Well, you said something interesting to me, you said
- 8:20recording or streaming the matches.
- 8:22So, do you go back and like, watch your film like like spring
- 8:26traditional Sports? Yes, we do.
- 8:28Go back to watch our film. We break all the plays down.
- 8:32It gets really specific. We need all the Time in the
- 8:35World to do it. But we are luckily giving given
- 8:38our cats period. So we get 25 minutes a day to
- 8:41You what we need to do. And, as well as that Scottsville
- 8:45High School Esports, has a twitch Channel where we live
- 8:49stream our matches and competitions against different
- 8:51schools. So we competed against Omaha,
- 8:54west side and Rocket league, as well as a South Sioux City.
- 8:59And off top of my head, I think Lincoln high, Lincoln Northeast,
- 9:03all these schools, we stream those matches.
- 9:05If you go to Twitch and look up, Scottsbluff High Esports, then
- 9:09it will pop up. And you'll see when we're live.
- 9:11Bye. Okay, well one other thing that
- 9:13I want to understand or know that.
- 9:16Also if you parallel with other activities, is there an
- 9:18eligibility component? Do you have to be eligible in
- 9:22order to compete? Definitely just like any other
- 9:25activity in Scottsville high school.
- 9:27You have to be passing your classes and Just everything else
- 9:32that would you would be with any other activity, there's no
- 9:34exception for Esports just because we're not out on a field
- 9:38or anything. And it's interesting because
- 9:41academic eligibility is a standard amongst the entire
- 9:44Nebraska Esports Association. It's not just a school disco
- 9:48thing, so if your kids aren't eligible, they can't play and
- 9:52you can get disqualified. In the way our tournaments run.
- 9:57If you miss two matches because you don't have enough players.
- 10:01You lose your playoff spot, so you have to make sure your kids
- 10:04week-to-week are available passing their classes and quite
- 10:08honestly. I'm the kids do all that they
- 10:10can to make sure they're available to play and we have
- 10:14some great kids in the program. So grades really aren't that
- 10:17large of a concern for us at this time every now and again,
- 10:20it can might slip up and we just say, hey, you know I got to get
- 10:23that great up and they do what they can, they make sure they're
- 10:25on task but across the entire state, that is the deal if
- 10:29you're going to compete. You got to be passing?
- 10:32Okay, well that's really great to hear.
- 10:33So I think I've got kind of like my last question and I want to
- 10:37ask you for you danara. So now that you've competed in
- 10:40this for a while, my question is kind of a fun, one is assuming
- 10:45you game at home, you probably do.
- 10:47Are you do you game as much at home still or has it kind of
- 10:51changed the frequency in which you game?
- 10:54I don't gave as much as home as home.
- 10:57Now, I play a lot during And then I go home and like, oh, I
- 11:03have to do school work now because I didn't do it during my
- 11:05after-school time because I was playing game.
- 11:07So really, I just pulled like a swath of what I do.
- 11:11It's it is kind of interesting because even me who loves to
- 11:16play league, the game is so, mentally taxing by the time,
- 11:19you're done playing around the rounds.
- 11:20Last 30, 45 minutes, depending that you're just tired of
- 11:24playing you just like, that's enough.
- 11:26Yeah, he's not even lying there, so mentally Challenging that, by
- 11:31the time, your brain just hurts. Like, by the time, the game is
- 11:34done. Well, it sounds like you're
- 11:35really getting to work out, then on your problem solving skills.
- 11:39So that that's awesome. Well, final last thing, I'm
- 11:43going to be asking, this is kind of a very 12 dates.
- 11:45My bonus question and my bonus question is Thanksgiving is
- 11:49coming up, you know, next week and just tell me real quick.
- 11:52Something you're thankful for I'm thankful for modern
- 11:57technology. It's gotten us so far.
- 12:00It's it. Insane.
- 12:02This might be a cheating answer but there's so much that I'm
- 12:06thankful for anymore. It's hard to just choose one it
- 12:09to pull things Health my little boys running around and he's
- 12:12awesome. And we're looking to have a
- 12:14second kid here, come January. So I'm just thankful for family.
- 12:17Well, congratulations to you. And thank you both for, you
- 12:21know, taking a little bit of time away from practice and your
- 12:23other activities to come talk with me.
- 12:26So I look forward to seeing how well the Esports team does
- 12:30throughout the school year. Absolutely.
- 12:32We thank you for your time. Thank you.
- 12:34And now we're going to move on to the second of our third
- 12:38activities that we're featuring this month for what's new in
- 12:41November. And this particular activity is
- 12:43really new as an it just started this week.
- 12:46And that is girls wrestling. We're super excited to add this
- 12:51new sport to Scottsville high school.
- 12:53So I am here with coached at all and why don't?
- 12:56The two of you should go ahead and introduce yourselves.
- 12:59I'm coach, the dhola. I have been the boys wrestling.
- 13:02Personality is going to be my fifth year and I'm also the head
- 13:06coach of the girls program with a few female assistant coaches.
- 13:10And we are very excited to kick. Start this program and start
- 13:15another Ridge wrestling tradition within Scottsbluff and
- 13:19we have a wrestler here. Tell me your name.
- 13:21Hi, my name is Gail Bravo. And what grade are you in a
- 13:24senior? Okay, although she you're going
- 13:26to do this for just one year is so dealing question for you
- 13:31before this year or like before practice started this year.
- 13:35Have you ever wrestled before know?
- 13:37So this is a very first, very first time for you, okay.
- 13:41So what's that like for you? Trying this?
- 13:43For the first time, it has like a lot of emotions about it, like
- 13:47sometimes I want to give up but no, well, you know, good for you
- 13:53for going out on a limb and, you know, giving that a try, pushed
- 13:58it all. How do you feel about taking?
- 14:02On another team to coach. I know it.
- 14:05People who know me personally out there know that wrestling is
- 14:09something that's very near and dear to me.
- 14:11It's a sport that I care a lot about and it's something that
- 14:14I'm very active with especially up in the Collegiate level.
- 14:17But, you know, I know what it means for a coach to take on a
- 14:20whole nother team. So, what does this look like in
- 14:23for you this year? You know, given the numbers we
- 14:26have right now. I think the real to have
- 14:28combined practices yet, although girls will practice with.
- 14:32Girls and boys will be practicing with the boys,
- 14:35overall, the sports the same. No matter its mornings or girls
- 14:39everything is going to be the same, the techniques going to be
- 14:41the same. It's going to come down to who
- 14:43can execute things, and do things in the right way.
- 14:46So being able to have everybody in the same place and be able to
- 14:50coach things at the same time and keep everybody working on
- 14:54the same stuff. I think that's going to be the
- 14:55nice part of it. As far as you know, that the
- 14:59paperwork side of stuff, it's not going to be Watch different
- 15:03video have 8 girls right now. Daily being our lone senior this
- 15:07year, but still one. I think that's going to help
- 15:12start a foundation. A good foundation for this girls
- 15:16wrestling program, right? And wrestling is not only new to
- 15:21us, here at Scott's Bluff. It's really pretty new at the
- 15:25state level as well. You know, it was just very
- 15:28recently sanctioned. So I think this is a really
- 15:32great. Eight time for our team right
- 15:35now. Because I really think that
- 15:37anyone can go and compete, and it's really, any kind of a Level
- 15:40Playing Field, that no one has this big advantage of this
- 15:44long-established team. So, I really think it's going to
- 15:48be super fun for the athletes this year.
- 15:51Jalen question for you, you've done some practice, you know, I
- 15:54had three boys who grew up and wrestled and I know what goes
- 15:58into wrestling practice wrestling practice is like, no.
- 16:00Other practice have you guys? Son, have you guys in the town
- 16:03of conditioning? We've done a little bit of
- 16:05running, which they don't like, but nobody's quit.
- 16:11So we're going to start and continue to do more wrestling
- 16:14and move forward with that stuff.
- 16:17Moving on, I'm hoping today we actually get into some live
- 16:20wrestling in the, at the end of practice.
- 16:24So we can see if they translate the drills and stuff that we've
- 16:28been learning to like a like match.
- 16:32Okay. Well that should be really fun
- 16:34for you guys today. Coach question for you, do you?
- 16:39I know it's so early and I know things are brand-new but do you
- 16:43have to have in a few days in the room with the girls?
- 16:46Do you have any predictions as far as how the Girls season is
- 16:50going to go for us? No, I think it's still pretty
- 16:55early and what the sport being is new.
- 16:58As it is like you said, you know, this is only Year too.
- 17:02Nebraska having sanctioned wrestling with in the state and
- 17:06kind of all the girls kind of starting back at square one.
- 17:09You know, and learning that I think any one of the girls that
- 17:13we have could compete at all stages.
- 17:17So it'll be interesting to watch them grow, and develop, and
- 17:22understand the sport a little bit.
- 17:23And then once we do start wrestling against other teams,
- 17:28and then we're going to really have an idea of What we can do
- 17:33and in moving forward there but they've been impressive up to
- 17:40this point. None of the girls are really
- 17:43scared to be physical, you know, they're not scared to do some
- 17:47things that others would be. And I think that's a good thing.
- 17:50Especially with in this sport another question for you, what
- 17:55would you have to say to maybe some girls who it?
- 18:00Maybe it won't be this year. But in the future are thinking
- 18:03about going out for wrestling. What would you tell them?
- 18:07Honestly like this, do it. Just like try it and then if you
- 18:11don't like it, then you. They don't like it.
- 18:15At least give it a try. It's really fun.
- 18:17It keeps you motivated and keeps you out of trouble.
- 18:21All right, well I think that, you know, that's really super
- 18:24good advice coach. When will people have the first
- 18:29opportunity here at home to be able to see both our boys and
- 18:33our girls. Our first opportunity at home.
- 18:38That's and I have to look at the schedule for sure.
- 18:41We do, we do travel quite a bit. First part of the Season.
- 18:47You've got to cut. We've got like three home duals
- 18:49though, right? Impaired after Christmas.
- 18:53I think it's kind of when we do our dual schedule but where the
- 18:57girls are going to have good competition moving forward.
- 19:01They can better. They're going to get an extra
- 19:04week of practice before everybody goes to China knees
- 19:10and then the third week is when the varsity goes to Gillette and
- 19:16the Gillette is actually going to have a tournament this year
- 19:19for girls. So it'll be the girls in the
- 19:20bar. SLI going down in July.
- 19:22So they're going to be a lot of opportunities for them to get
- 19:26some experience before. Our first home dual that is
- 19:30going to be. Let's see, I'm trying to think
- 19:35here. Well, and that's going to be a
- 19:37really great opportunity, just to get them that dual experience
- 19:40because, you know, duels are a little bit different than an
- 19:43individual meet. They're also a lot more fun, I
- 19:46think. We'll see how how the girls line
- 19:53up with him weight classes. But our first home bill is
- 19:57actually going to be December 22nd right before that winter
- 20:01break and it'll be the bear cats versus the North Platte
- 20:06bulldogs. So oh well, that'll be a really
- 20:08great opportunity for people to maybe come and see what's going
- 20:14to be a first. It's Gospel of high school so
- 20:17that pretty much wraps up my questions.
- 20:19But today, I'm asking, King everybody else.
- 20:22An unrelated bonus question, so I get to ask the two of you too.
- 20:25So here's your bonus question, this since Thanksgiving is
- 20:28coming up next week, I have just been asking everyone to share
- 20:32something that they're thankful for the first.
- 20:35I mean, I'm thankful for my family.
- 20:39I wouldn't be where I am without them in the support that I've
- 20:42had moving forward. And then outside of the family,
- 20:46I'm thankful for the parents that trust Their kids to learn
- 20:52from me and move forward not only in the sport of wrestling
- 20:55but also in life and your turn. Um, I'm very thankful for my mom
- 21:01does so much for me. She helped me through sometimes
- 21:04I even the most and some of the teachers here they're good
- 21:08support. When you need somebody to talk
- 21:10to. Well that's wonderful.
- 21:12I hope I hope your mom gives this a listen so that she can
- 21:16see here that because I think sometimes you know as parents we
- 21:19don't always get the opportunity to hear.
- 21:21That so hopefully she'll tuned in and some of our teachers as
- 21:24well but that's all I have for now.
- 21:26So we will head on into our third activity that we're going
- 21:30to talk about and thank both of you.
- 21:32Thanks to both of you for coming.
- 21:33Thank you for having us and now it's time to move on to our
- 21:37third and final activity that we are talking about for what's new
- 21:41in November here. And this is another one that
- 21:45falls kind of under the not brand new, but newer category
- 21:50and With me. Today, I have our one of our
- 21:54sponsors from Bearcats for diversity.
- 21:56Once you go ahead and introduce yourself.
- 21:58Hi. My name is Lynn and I am the
- 22:01diversity equity and inclusion. Facilitator, for Scottsdale
- 22:05schools. Wonderful, I'm so glad to have
- 22:08you. So, I guess I'm our students
- 22:10that were in Bearcats for diversity are all sort of doing
- 22:13other activities right now, right?
- 22:15That's why I couldn't get anybody to come.
- 22:16Talk with me. They are super busy right now
- 22:19and so you are With just me this time.
- 22:22Sorry. And that's okay.
- 22:23I hear mock trial because I heard that with some of the
- 22:26other groups, to I hear mock trial, is, like really underway.
- 22:29And that's an important important ones going on today.
- 22:32I think they're, I think both voice and ready for their next
- 22:37Endeavor. All right, well we will go ahead
- 22:40and talk a little bit so that our listeners gets, you find out
- 22:43about what Bearcats for diversity is.
- 22:46So first of all, just go ahead and let us know that tell us
- 22:48what it is that this group is and what you do.
- 22:52So, Bearcats for diversity, is a student group that was created
- 22:56to create to form a open and inclusive environment for any
- 23:01student and to help make shs more welcoming to everybody as
- 23:07well. We focus on raising awareness
- 23:11and providing education for all things, Multicultural and
- 23:17diversity. And so we use a lot of our
- 23:20tangerine. Our cats meetings to come up
- 23:23with fun ways that we can bring that to the student population
- 23:27that is Meaningful, but engaging and fun at the same time.
- 23:31Well, that sounds really great. It's, you know, not only that
- 23:34thing of making sure that everyone feels like they belong
- 23:37here in Scottsville high school which I think is important to
- 23:39all of us. But also, you know, how can I
- 23:42how can I learn some things about you know, different
- 23:46cultures, or things that you know, I didn't know.
- 23:48So that that sounds really exciting.
- 23:51Roughly. How many students participate in
- 23:53this group last year, we had an insane amount of students.
- 23:59And this year, we have quite a few.
- 24:02We have about six to eight consistently during our
- 24:05meetings, but you don't have to be consistently involved to be a
- 24:10part of their hats for diversity.
- 24:12We understand that you might have other things going on, and
- 24:15so that kind of flows in and out throughout the school year, you
- 24:18can jump in whenever you have that availability and we just Of
- 24:21pick up, right? Where maybe we left off.
- 24:24And so we are meeting on Wednesday, steering cats and
- 24:27then after school in this kind room on Tuesdays.
- 24:32That's awesome. So, what sort of activities you
- 24:37know, whether you're if that's during the school year or things
- 24:40you have coming up, what kind of activities have the students
- 24:43been participating in? So we just wrapped up in
- 24:48September with our Multicultural youth leadership.
- 24:51The conference, we had members volunteer as student leaders for
- 24:55that day, and then we've also been doing awareness.
- 24:59We did a panic Heritage awareness.
- 25:01We did an indigenous peoples Day celebration, and a Native,
- 25:06American Heritage, education to. And then for December, we're
- 25:11working on doing an inclusive schools, awareness for the high
- 25:17school, and then working on a toy drive.
- 25:21I've as a part of our volunteering initiative as well,
- 25:24where we will help collect toys or do some kind of fundraising
- 25:29to donate to Finders Keepers organization, that donate to
- 25:36children in foster care or children that have a need during
- 25:39the holidays and spread some of that positivity and cheered
- 25:43tyrannous as well. That's really great.
- 25:46I really like the community. Sure.
- 25:51A sort of aspect that you've also been able to kind of
- 25:54interweave into the programming. I think that's really valuable
- 25:58for our students and I think it's really great for a
- 26:00community to know that we're doing that because there are
- 26:03just so many different groups and so many different ways.
- 26:07I feel like that our students are out in the community making
- 26:11a difference, so that's really great.
- 26:14Next question, I feel like with a group like this, especially
- 26:19with a group that focuses kind, Of on an educational aspect that
- 26:24whether you're a student or whether you're an adult that
- 26:26participates as a sponsor, there's you've probably learned
- 26:30something new. So, tell me something that
- 26:33you've learned from taking part in Bearcats for diversity.
- 26:37So one of the best parts about because for diversity like you
- 26:41said is that in our challenge to educate and raise awareness.
- 26:46We're doing a lot of learning ourselves and you have to do
- 26:50that. You have to Educate yourself in
- 26:52order to provide that education to others.
- 26:54And so every topic and holiday or cultural celebration that we
- 26:59do, we end up doing a lot of our own learning and for indigenous
- 27:03peoples day. We had rhesus, stands our Native
- 27:07American Home liaison come in and speak with the group about
- 27:11her perspective on the holiday and why she felt it was so
- 27:15important for it to be celebrated and recognized in our
- 27:19schools since we have Native American population in the
- 27:22Panhandle and with that, or some of our students were also able
- 27:27to learn about some of the history surrounding Native
- 27:31Americans. And a lot of our students also
- 27:34didn't know that they were Native American and then made
- 27:37that connection. And so that was really cool to
- 27:40see that connection being made and building that relationship
- 27:44while we were raising awareness and learning more about our own
- 27:47history even in Scottsbluff. Yeah, that's really it really Is
- 27:51sort of a multi-faceted kind of approach to, you know, maybe
- 27:56learning something cultural or historical but also at the same
- 27:59time, you know, worrying about yourself or learning about
- 28:01others or learning, you know, how you can make others feel
- 28:06that they're seeing so that sounded like that was probably
- 28:10really, really beneficial for everybody.
- 28:14That took part in that. Do you think that there are
- 28:17certain things that the students maybe gravitate towards or the
- 28:21Agents have really liked as far as participating in the group.
- 28:26I think the students really do like doing the cultural and
- 28:31world's diversity celebrations. Because we get to learn so much
- 28:35about the outside world, especially since we're in like a
- 28:40landlocked, great role State. And then I think the students
- 28:45really, like, just all of the different activities that we
- 28:48also do as a group we did last. You're a potluck for Hispanic
- 28:53Heritage Month and it was bringing a friend.
- 28:55And so then we got to not only involve more people but then
- 28:59kind of have better conversations around not
- 29:01potluck. And we're always trying to find
- 29:04new ways to raise awareness or do these activities that are
- 29:10going to be fun and still engaging for the high schooler.
- 29:15So they get to kind of build their agenda and their goals.
- 29:19It's not us telling them. What to do as sponsors the
- 29:22students really get to design what they would like to do, we
- 29:26just help them Reach that. Well, that sounds like it really
- 29:30is a process that in addition to the learning piece and stills
- 29:34leadership. Yes, leadership organization.
- 29:40And I think, too, just like building those relationships,
- 29:43you know, we have students who are kind of Putting themselves
- 29:47in a vulnerable spot, trying to raise awareness and education in
- 29:51a way that won't angry anybody. But still makes everybody feel
- 29:55welcome and and helps us all learn a little bit more about
- 29:57the world that we live in. Well, that is wonderful.
- 30:02I really appreciate you taking the time to join me for today's
- 30:07conversation. I wish we could have had a
- 30:09student but that's wonderful that they're you know all off
- 30:13working hard at other activities.
- 30:15Before we wrap up I have one final thing.
- 30:18I've been throwing a random bonus question and everybody of
- 30:21this podcast all day so you don't get off the hook even
- 30:25though you're not a student so that this is an easy one.
- 30:27So with Giving coming up, I have just been asking everybody to
- 30:32share one thing that they're thankful for.
- 30:35I am thankful for the time that I get to spend with my family.
- 30:42I used to live hours away from my family, and so now I get to
- 30:47see them on a weekly basis or even more than that.
- 30:51And so I'm thankful that I get to be so close to them now.
- 30:55That's wonderful. And it would only be right
- 30:57there. Since I've asked this of
- 30:58everybody today that I also have to do to take part in this
- 31:02exercise. So I am Thankful as well for my
- 31:07family and right now just recently actually my youngest
- 31:11just moved out of the house and so none of my kids are, you
- 31:15know, they're close by but still a few hours away.
- 31:18But I am thankful of for how often right now because it seems
- 31:21like almost on a weekly basis. I get to see at least one of
- 31:24them and they're all coming home for the holidays.
- 31:26So I am really excited about that.
- 31:29It's always such a good feeling to come back home.
- 31:31Yes, I think I think that's absolutely the case.
- 31:35So with that, I would like to thank you for your time and I
- 31:40appreciate you giving us the opportunity to learn more about
- 31:44what Bearcats for diversity does.
- 31:45Well, thank you for inviting us. There you have it listeners.
- 31:49I hope you enjoyed learning about the new things happening
- 31:52at Scottsville, high school. As much as I enjoyed
- 31:54interviewing. Our fabulous guest will see you
- 31:57for the next episode.
