- 0:00Speaker 1: Eight, seven thirteen ten Wi b A and ask the experts.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Hanging out this morning with Andrew Larson. Of course, Andrew
- 0:07Speaker 1: comes to us from Larsen Home Services their website larsenome
- 0:12Speaker 1: Services dot com. That's l A R. S O N
- 0:15Speaker 1: Home Services dot com. Delvi number six oh eight five
- 0:18Speaker 1: three five forty three forty three. That's six oh eight
- 0:21Speaker 1: five three five forty three forty three. Andrew, how you
- 0:24Speaker 1: doing on this little drizzly, dreary kind of morning. How
- 0:27Speaker 1: you feel in today?
- 0:29Speaker 2: You know I'm always fantastic, Yes, you know that I do.
- 0:32Speaker 2: It's hard to bring me down. I don't know. We
- 0:35Speaker 2: need to bottle it up. And you should try to
- 0:37Speaker 2: bottle it up and try to sell it emails.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Well.
- 0:41Speaker 2: And I think I think some full type of guy
- 0:44Speaker 2: Sean you are.
- 0:44Speaker 1: And I think I think a lot of it has
- 0:46Speaker 1: to do with what you do professionally for folks that
- 0:49Speaker 1: don't know obviously Larsen Home Services your your company, your business.
- 0:54Speaker 1: And why I say that is you love what you do.
- 0:57Speaker 1: And I think what's what's probably helps you with your
- 1:00Speaker 1: positive attitude is you're actually helping people. Is there are
- 1:03Speaker 1: so many times where I know, like We've had storms
- 1:06Speaker 1: come through and other things where you and the team
- 1:08Speaker 1: at Largsentome Services have really come in and been able
- 1:11Speaker 1: to really help people when they need it most. And
- 1:13Speaker 1: that's one of the cool things about And I've had
- 1:15Speaker 1: obviously plenty of experience over the years of working with
- 1:17Speaker 1: you at Larsenome Services as well, and speaking of storms
- 1:21Speaker 1: and other events and things that can happen, is obviously
- 1:25Speaker 1: your roof does a lot of a lot of things,
- 1:27Speaker 1: and a lot of us just kind of, you know,
- 1:30Speaker 1: before I knew you, I just kind of looked at
- 1:31Speaker 1: it purely aesthetically of like, Okay, the roof looks nice.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Everything's good. I've learned over the years there's a lot
- 1:37Speaker 1: too roofing stuff I will never fully understand, but I'm
- 1:40Speaker 1: always impressed with what you and the crew at Larsenome
- 1:43Speaker 1: Services know. But roofing is and the roof itself, surprise, surprise,
- 1:48Speaker 1: is quite possibly the most vital part of your home,
- 1:50Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 1:52Speaker 2: You know, it's funny you'd say, I love what I do.
- 1:55Speaker 3: And we hear from people all the time where you know,
- 1:59Speaker 3: we put we put gutter shutter on their home and
- 2:01Speaker 3: they'll literally send us Christmas cards or thank you, let
- 2:05Speaker 3: thank you. I mean we should be the ones thanking them,
- 2:07Speaker 3: but they thank us. You know, I used to get
- 2:10Speaker 3: water in my basement when it rained if I didn't
- 2:12Speaker 3: keep them clean. And it's been two years and I
- 2:14Speaker 3: haven't even had to think about my gutters. I don't
- 2:16Speaker 3: get water in my basement anymore because we put gutter
- 2:18Speaker 3: shutter on and.
- 2:19Speaker 2: It was designed properly.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I was able to finish my basement off finally because
- 2:22Speaker 3: I don't have to worry about water getting in it.
- 2:24Speaker 3: And I've my or I've had my roof replaced twice
- 2:27Speaker 3: in the past twenty years, and something always went wrong
- 2:29Speaker 3: with it, and we've had a roof from you. I
- 2:32Speaker 3: don't have to worry about it like that's that's the goal.
- 2:35Speaker 3: That's what makes everyone here get up in the morning
- 2:39Speaker 3: and try hard. And I I truly believe that we
- 2:45Speaker 3: have this mentality of it doesn't matter who gets so
- 2:47Speaker 3: you're going to be successful when it doesn't matter who
- 2:50Speaker 3: gets credit for it. It's a team effort and that's
- 2:54Speaker 3: how we live every day.
- 2:54Speaker 2: But enough about us. Yes, I wanted to.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Talk about roofing today because our guys run into there's
- 3:03Speaker 3: a lot of roofing competition, which is fine, which honestly
- 3:06Speaker 3: is great. I know a lot of roofers hate competition.
- 3:10Speaker 3: No competition is good. And the reason competition is good
- 3:13Speaker 3: is because it makes everybody involved have to be better.
- 3:18Speaker 3: And I get people ask me all the time, well,
- 3:20Speaker 3: you guys have your cleanup guarantee, your no nail guarantee,
- 3:23Speaker 3: your home protection guarantee, your job safety guarantee, And.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Why do you put that out there so much? Why
- 3:32Speaker 2: do you advertise it?
- 3:33Speaker 3: Because now I see a lot of our competitors advertising
- 3:37Speaker 3: the same thing. And back in the day when I
- 3:40Speaker 3: first started and we'd come up with these, I mean,
- 3:43Speaker 3: it's not like they were mind blowing. It's not like
- 3:45Speaker 3: I was starting SpaceX like Elon or something like that. Right,
- 3:48Speaker 3: It's not like I'm changing the world. But these little
- 3:51Speaker 3: things to make roofing better, make a better experience for homeowners.
- 3:59Speaker 3: I came to this realization that if we did it
- 4:03Speaker 3: better and people copied us, that meant that it was
- 4:07Speaker 3: going to be better experienced for more people, whether we
- 4:11Speaker 3: did their roof or not. And I think that roofing
- 4:14Speaker 3: has come a long long ways because of stuff like that.
- 4:20Speaker 3: I see our advertisements being copied. I see the way
- 4:24Speaker 3: that we do things being copied, and honestly, I'm kind
- 4:28Speaker 3: of proud of that, and we haven't suffered because of it.
- 4:32Speaker 3: So what I wanted to talk about was what people
- 4:36Speaker 3: should expect when trying to get a roof. Now, listen,
- 4:39Speaker 3: there are a bunch of people out there that still
- 4:42Speaker 3: are like, naw, a roof is a roof, I don't care.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Just give me the cheapest roof, slap some shingles on it. Great, Fine,
- 4:47Speaker 3: they're not our customer. That is not the person that
- 4:51Speaker 3: we are looking for. If we go to your house
- 4:54Speaker 3: and you're like my brother's cousin's uncle's sister's best friend,
- 4:57Speaker 3: can slap a roof on here for five grand, Hey,
- 5:00Speaker 3: I wish you the best of luck. That's not our customer.
- 5:03Speaker 3: We are looking for someone who truly cares about the process,
- 5:07Speaker 3: the experience, and the way things are done when we
- 5:12Speaker 3: do the critical details, because those are the most important things.
- 5:14Speaker 3: And I've been saying for as long as we've been
- 5:16Speaker 3: doing this show, you can put the most expensive shingles
- 5:19Speaker 3: in the world on your home, but if you don't
- 5:21Speaker 3: take care of the critical details, it will leak trust me.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I've been through it all. We've been there, we've done that.
- 5:28Speaker 3: We've had to change processes and procedures because certain people
- 5:32Speaker 3: don't want skylights replaced when they do their roof will.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Guess what with us, it's not an option because I've
- 5:37Speaker 3: been through it. If they don't get replaced after a
- 5:39Speaker 3: roof replacement, the chances of them leaking is highly likely.
- 5:44Speaker 3: It's just what they're meant to do. So when people
- 5:47Speaker 3: are getting an estimate for a roof, just make sure
- 5:51Speaker 3: that whoever you're getting an estimate from is going over everything,
- 5:56Speaker 3: because if they don't, you cannot hold them accountable if
- 6:01Speaker 3: something doesn't get done.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Does that make sense?
- 6:04Speaker 3: It does if they're not talking about the way they
- 6:07Speaker 3: lay the underlayment, or what they're using, or the ice
- 6:10Speaker 3: and water leak barrier and how much of it. If
- 6:12Speaker 3: they're not talking about step flashing, chimney flashing, chimney flashing, crickets,
- 6:18Speaker 3: starter strip. If they're not talking about that, there's a
- 6:21Speaker 3: good chance that they're not doing it, or they're not
- 6:24Speaker 3: doing as much of it as you want. How many
- 6:27Speaker 3: roofers don't talk about ventilation? I mean, ventilation is massive.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I can't tell you how many homes that we've went
- 6:33Speaker 3: to and people are like, oh, my roof is bad,
- 6:35Speaker 3: my roof is leaking, And it has nothing to do
- 6:37Speaker 3: with that, And it has everything to do with improper air, ceiling,
- 6:42Speaker 3: improper ventilation. And when in the middle of the winter
- 6:45Speaker 3: when we're heating our home, you're heating your home and
- 6:48Speaker 3: all of that hot air is going straight into the
- 6:49Speaker 3: attic and it's freezing cold. Your roof deck is you know,
- 6:54Speaker 3: ten degrees, it condensates and then it freezes and then
- 6:58Speaker 3: when it heats up from the sun, melts and it
- 7:01Speaker 3: drips everywhere. And so those are critical details and things
- 7:05Speaker 3: that need to be talked about. Yes, shingles need to
- 7:08Speaker 3: be talked about, shingle warranties, stuff like that. That's all important.
- 7:12Speaker 3: But unless everything that you everything that you can't see,
- 7:17Speaker 3: needs to be talked about, because that's the most important stuff.
- 7:22Speaker 1: By the way, I haven't mentioned this to you. I
- 7:24Speaker 1: should have texted you this. We've had some work done
- 7:28Speaker 1: on our chimney and the mason was over the other
- 7:31Speaker 1: day and I was talking to him and he actually
- 7:33Speaker 1: commented on your flashing, like, isn't that thing is that's
- 7:37Speaker 1: on there? He's like he was. He was very impressed
- 7:39Speaker 1: by the work that your guys did putting that flashing
- 7:42Speaker 1: in and it's and that's a pretty amazing thing too.
- 7:44Speaker 1: And I've got a guest too, Andrew. With folks staying
- 7:48Speaker 1: in their homes longer, that's been really good for you
- 7:50Speaker 1: guys at Large Home Services. We talk about the type
- 7:52Speaker 1: of work and the type of projects that you guys
- 7:55Speaker 1: work on at Larst Home Services for folks that are
- 7:57Speaker 1: going to be staying in their houses longer and they
- 7:59Speaker 1: want a lasting roof and they want a lasting solution.
- 8:03Speaker 1: They're calling you. You're not the type of guy that, hey,
- 8:05Speaker 1: we're selling our house in two weeks, just do it
- 8:08Speaker 1: super cheap, Just throw some shingles on there, so in
- 8:10Speaker 1: the listing it can say new roof. Literally, with people
- 8:12Speaker 1: staying in their homes, they're calling you and saying, you
- 8:14Speaker 1: know what, we want to really make sure this is
- 8:16Speaker 1: gonna last.
- 8:17Speaker 2: That's our customer.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Yeah, our customer is a person who cares about what
- 8:21Speaker 3: goes on their home. Because again, there's this old you know,
- 8:26Speaker 3: mantra of you know, the shingles are shingles.
- 8:29Speaker 2: It is what it is.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Just slap some shingles on you know, put some shingles
- 8:31Speaker 3: over the old shingles. No, like, we can't do that,
- 8:34Speaker 3: And you just talked about that chimney. The chimney is
- 8:38Speaker 3: probably one of the biggest leak points that we see
- 8:42Speaker 3: now our roofers. They're amazing and we've had the same
- 8:45Speaker 3: roofing crew since twoenty ten. It has become a great relationship.
- 8:50Speaker 3: But there's only one or two guys on every crew
- 8:54Speaker 3: that can touch a chimney because it's that important. Yeah,
- 8:58Speaker 3: taking our chimney flashing off.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Is not easy.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I mean, it is cut into the block, it is
- 9:03Speaker 3: bent properly, it is silicone properly. There's a process to that.
- 9:07Speaker 3: So those critical details are so important. And the other
- 9:10Speaker 3: thing that I always talk about is trying to put
- 9:13Speaker 3: products up there that aren't a throwaway product. And I
- 9:16Speaker 3: don't want to talk about specific shingle manufacturers anything like that,
- 9:20Speaker 3: but I mean, I truly believe that it's gotten to
- 9:22Speaker 3: a point where a lot of them shingles go bad
- 9:26Speaker 3: in fifteen years. Cool, Yeah, put some new ones on.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I don't like that. That's why we're always looking for
- 9:32Speaker 3: something better. That's why we're always trying to sell Class
- 9:35Speaker 3: four Impact rated shingles because one of the biggest things
- 9:38Speaker 3: that makes people get new shingles is hail. It doesn't
- 9:40Speaker 3: have to be that way. I can tell you this,
- 9:42Speaker 3: with all of these storms that we've had, We've went
- 9:44Speaker 3: back to dozens and dozens of our past customers in
- 9:46Speaker 3: those areas and they have had Class four armor shield
- 9:49Speaker 3: shingles put on zero damage. With everybody around them getting
- 9:54Speaker 3: new shingles, they have no damage. And that's what we're
- 9:57Speaker 3: trying to do. Another product that we really try to
- 10:00Speaker 3: push is f Wave. F Wave is basically it's almost
- 10:03Speaker 3: like a rubber shingle and it is thick and it
- 10:06Speaker 3: is strong and it seals down. Hail can't hurt it.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Sticks can't hurt it. I mean, I've had hail at
- 10:11Speaker 3: my house. I've had ninety mile an hour straight line winds.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I haven't had so much as a shingle lift. That
- 10:19Speaker 3: is a product where people are like, well, what can
- 10:21Speaker 3: go wrong with it? I have no idea, like it
- 10:24Speaker 3: can't have granular loss. I mean, what goes wrong with
- 10:26Speaker 3: the regular shingle is it starts to get baked, it
- 10:29Speaker 3: starts to have granular loss. Then the fiberglass matting starts
- 10:32Speaker 3: to show. Then it starts to curl and it's time
- 10:34Speaker 3: for a new shingle because it will leak with this.
- 10:37Speaker 2: It can't do that now. Is it expensive?
- 10:40Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yes it is. It is very expensive. Is
- 10:44Speaker 3: it for everyone? No, it's not. But for anybody who says,
- 10:49Speaker 3: I don't want to put a throw away roof on
- 10:51Speaker 3: my house. I want a roof that is going to
- 10:54Speaker 3: stand the test of time. It's going to get through
- 10:56Speaker 3: all of the storms. The armor shield shingles that we
- 11:00Speaker 3: offer an f Wave are that. That's the way I
- 11:04Speaker 3: would put nothing else on my house besides one of
- 11:06Speaker 3: those two products, because I know that they're gonna last
- 11:10Speaker 3: and they're going to last a really, really really long time.
- 11:12Speaker 1: One of the things too, that I really appreciate, and
- 11:15Speaker 1: folks I hope that have had a chance to work
- 11:17Speaker 1: with you definitely echo this is options. You mentioned different
- 11:21Speaker 1: types of shingles, different applications, and it's really about talking
- 11:25Speaker 1: with homeowners about what best fits them, their budget, their
- 11:29Speaker 1: their plans. And that's a great thing too. It's no pressure.
- 11:32Speaker 1: It's a great day to call the folks are Storm Services.
