- 2:05capital moments plus Google to try Canada. Chris Millery's here and the man who's
- 2:07turning the world of radio upside down in Charleston. We've been talking about it,
- 2:12We've been teasing it for days on the air and social media. The
- 2:15legend is back on an all new station. We launched it officially this morning,
- 2:20West Virginia's Wild and Wonderful Classic Rock ninety eight point seven A Mountain and
- 2:23the man and charges, the legendary Steve Animal. Steve is a rock radio
- 2:28god here in West Virginia. It took a lot to get him back on
- 2:30the air, but he's back in a big way, and he's going to
- 2:32join us to talk about the return, his return to the airwaves in which
- 2:36you can expect from this brand new station in our building here as of now,
- 2:39only about three hours old, the all new West Virginia's Wild, Wonderful
- 2:43Classic Rock ninety eight point seven A Mountain featuring Steve Animal, and he'll join
- 2:46us in the final segment of the show today. And also not the only
- 2:51big news today, a new sponsor on the show, Pinnacle Consultants and you're
- 2:55gonna be hearing a lot more about them in the coming weeks and months too,
- 3:00So a lot of stuff going on. A big day here, Dave
- 3:01Nation. That's welcome in from Mayor Monday, the honorable Mayor of South Charleston,
- 3:05Frank Mullins, Mayor Marlins, good morning, how are you, good
- 3:07morning to day, doing wonderful. Thanks for having me, Thank you for
- 3:09being here. You're at a big day, man. Lots of big announcements
- 3:13today, Yeah, lots of big announcements. It seems like the last few
- 3:15weeks here in South Crowleston, the works site, they've got a lot of
- 3:17good things going on, not only in South Charleston but all over the region
- 3:21as well. Let's talk about the mall project. What's the latest there.
- 3:23That's what everybody wants to talk about. So how's the mall project going into
- 3:28in South Charleston. Well, that's going well. As a matter of fact,
- 3:30the great news we got last week and got confirmed from our engineering companies
- 3:32are that we actually have finished the field of the pond itself, which is
- 3:37six months ahead of time. So that's a good thing. So now the
- 3:39clock's kicking on the Compassion and Settlement fixed to twelve months and then the rest
- 3:43of the stores can start construction. So that's that was great news that we're
- 3:46six months ahead of time. So what we're doing now is you'll see us
- 3:49over there doing a little bit more site development work at the Minard site and
- 3:51have to check out I mean at the Starbucks site, which will be the
- 3:54next construction starting in September. So things are moving along and I think within
- 3:58the next six to twelve months you're going things see things pick up a little
- 4:00bit. And what is our Has it changed any mayor since the last time
- 4:03we had to do on our projected timeline for the entire project to be done,
- 4:08No, it has not. Even though we did we did finish that
- 4:10six months ahead of time, we're still projecting it to be you know,
- 4:12twenty twenty five to be the completion of all the stores and have things open.
- 4:15We'll see how that goes. These timeline seems to always be a moving
- 4:17target. But mother nature has a lot to do with it obviously, well,
- 4:20mother nature, supply chain issues, there's all kinds of things we're still
- 4:24dealing with. Yeah, absolutely absolutely, and I want you to talk about
- 4:29it as you have in a past Mayor. But as we get closer to
- 4:30this thing being a reality with all of it, I'm talking about the entire
- 4:34project, talking about your expectations for this project and what it's gonna mean not
- 4:41only to South Charleston, Mayor, but to the entire Kanaal Valley. Yeah,
- 4:44I think. I think since day one, I've called it a game
- 4:46changer for this community, not only South Drawston, but I think the whole
- 4:48valley, as you mentioned, and what you'll see not only you know.
- 4:51I've been asked before, what do you know do we just got to finish
- 4:54with election cycles? We're starting new terms a lot one? What are you
- 4:57looking forward to the most? And to me, obviously of getting upon project
- 5:00done and some other things done we've got already started. But to me,
- 5:02the most exciting thing is the unknown. And I've said this before too,
- 5:05there are projects out there. They're going to be a domino effect to what
- 5:08we're doing. We're already dealing with some developers on some other properties along with
- 5:11the new Jefferson Road route and things like that. We're already talking to some
- 5:15other companies and some other businesses about ideas and what they want to do to
- 5:17develop then be close to the They want to be close to park Place because
- 5:20they know that that area is going to be, you know, a focal
- 5:23point for people to come to shop. So that the most exciting thing to
- 5:26me is there is an idea out there. We don't even know what it
- 5:28is yet, but it's coming. It's going to be exciting. And I'll
- 5:30tell you this, Mayor, is somebody who, mean maybe a couple of
- 5:32times a week, finds themselves navigating the construction project on Jefferson Road. I
- 5:38will say this though, I mean, considering what you are doing there,
- 5:42I mean, you know, you're building roads through mountains and things of that
- 5:45nature. It again, and somebody's probably gonna eat me up about this.
- 5:48I'm only through there maybe a couple times a week. But I think the
- 5:53traffic, considering the project and the scope of this project, Mayor, I
- 5:57think the traffic actually flows pretty well through there. Now, I would agree
- 6:00with you, David. I've said this before too. Now, there's gonna
- 6:02be some unavoidable in conveniences. There always is progress, right, it means
- 6:05nothing you can do about that. Look, this is a guy who drives
- 6:08through their five or six times a day. Yeah, And I'm telling you,
- 6:11you know, so that's how I get to work and get home.
- 6:13So I agree with you. I think the traffic flow on both, whether
- 6:15it be Route sixty gonna Pie Park Place or whether you're going down Jefferson Road,
- 6:19I think it's going as well as it can. The toughest thing for
- 6:21me is keeping my car clean, right, yeah, exactly exactly. I'm
- 6:25a car clean guy, and it's hard to keep a clean driving through that
- 6:27stuff. It's Mary Monday and we're talking to South Charles from Mayor Frank Mullins
- 6:30here on five Dady Life had a text of the show. Here. Mayor
- 6:32wanted me to ask you when all the new road work to South Roads would
- 6:36be complete and open to Root sixty. I believe now that's the DAHS project.
- 6:41You know, it's not a city project. I'm not exactly sure what
- 6:44the completion day is if I'm not mistaken. What they told us in the
- 6:46beginning was it was a two year project. So I would guess that to
- 6:50be somewhere at the end of next year maybe, but again I don't might
- 6:54be a better question for the DOAH engineer's answer, but that's my that's my
- 6:58memory of what it was now the a, he says, road. I
- 7:00understand information I got last week as well. Is it it's complete, So
- 7:04it'll just be waiting on Jefferson the road to come though to connect in Okay,
- 7:08all right, very good. Another text, you're popular guy here,
- 7:11mayor, but people want to ask them all of our mayor's questions when we
- 7:14have them. On one says, can you ask the mayor is there going
- 7:15to be any attractions in the newmall area like putt put golf or top golf,
- 7:19something like that, or just shopping and Texas says, I know many
- 7:23of us still, mister Rock Lake area, and they have such things to
- 7:26do there. Yeah. Good, that's a good question. We have talked
- 7:29to some in the entertainment industry as well as hospitality and restaurant obviously in retail.
- 7:32So we'll see what the final makeup is going to be. But I
- 7:35hope to have something like that because I want it to be diverse. I
- 7:38wanted to have a little bit of everything for people to enjoy. I want
- 7:41to You mentioned the election, so you are the voters of South Charleston just
- 7:45elected you to a new term. Congratulations on that. Now, how long
- 7:48have you been Mayor? Now this will be my fifth term, your fifth
- 7:51term, Okay, So what makes you want to keep doing this? Because
- 7:56obviously, I mean, you know after sometimes after one term or two,
- 8:00you know, people just throw up their hands say, Okay, I'm done.
- 8:01What makes you want to continue to do this? I just still have
- 8:05the passion and the vision, and I obviously I want to see the projects
- 8:09we have going on and get across the finish line. That's a big motivator
- 8:11for me. But look, I'm a South Charleston guy and I've been in
- 8:13this business for forty one years, believe or not. I started at the
- 8:16age in nineteen when I was in college, the lifeguard, the community center
- 8:18before it even opened. So you know, I've been here a long time,
- 8:22but I enjoyed. I think what's kept me fresh, though, is
- 8:24the fact that I have done a lot of different jobs. I haven't just
- 8:26been the public works director, recreation director or may I've had different things to
- 8:30do. So that keeps you. That keeps you fresh, I think in
- 8:31a sense. But it's it's just a passion for the job. It's my
- 8:35staff. I have an amazing staff. It just makes it a joy to
- 8:37go to work every day. So I'm just very happy doing I'm doing.
- 8:41You know, try to recruit me to do other things state level and things
- 8:43like that, and that's flattering, but I'm doing what I like to do.
- 8:48And I'll tell you you know. And I have, as you know,
- 8:50mayor a different mayor on the show every week. And nobody, nobody
- 8:54loves their towns more than our mayors here in the Canal Valley. Whether it's
- 8:56you or whether it's Scott James, or mayor a good one of you're in
- 8:58Charleston, whoever I have on, I mean, they love and you gotta
- 9:01love the town. You said, you're a South Charleston guy. You gotta
- 9:05love the town in order to do the job. Well, there's no questions
- 9:07about it. I tell my people all the time when I'm looking to hire
- 9:09folks and bring them on board with us. Obviously, education, experience,
- 9:13those kind of things come into play, But to me, the most important
- 9:16thing is do you have a passion for what you want to do. If
- 9:18you have a passion for it, you'll do well. I would agree with
- 9:20that now, Marion. Seems every time we have you on, we talk
- 9:24about them all. But there's plenty of other great things going on in the
- 9:26land there of the Black Eagles, both business wise and fun stuff at summer
- 9:31festivals and whatnot. Give us a little time capsule what's going on. Well,
- 9:35just last week we cut a ribbon on a very exciting company called Helicon,
- 9:39which is basically it's a company coming to our coming to the tech park
- 9:43that's going to manufacturer Teleton buying there, which is a fuel that that boosts
- 9:48are at boost the improvements and enhancement of our rockets and missiles for the military.
- 9:52So not only they bring good jobs to the city, but they're also
- 9:54into the region, but they're also doing the work to improve our national security.
- 9:58So that's that's all. It is a good thing. And the briefing
- 10:01they gave us that day was the most impressive briefing I've ever been in sitting
- 10:05to see where, you know, a new business coming to your city.
- 10:07So that from that standpoint, that was very exciting. As you mentioned,
- 10:11we got Summerfest coming up, an annual event to people all over the area
- 10:15love, so we're happy to get that going here in a few weeks.
- 10:18So that's a Again, that's something everybody looks forward to. Yeah, I
- 10:20mean, there's always something going on there, you know, whether it's restaurants
- 10:24or whether it's business. And and again I think that when you get this
- 10:26park place finished, I think that you're going to see even more things going
- 10:28on there, because again it's not just a South Charleston project, may you
- 10:33know how, And like we just came off for god a couple of weeks
- 10:35ago where Gotta didn't just impact Charleston, it impacted you folks and onto the
- 10:39valley. It's kind of the way it works here, Absolutely it is.
- 10:41And I think all the cities have a little bit of something going on like
- 10:43that. I know Scotty does a good job down and saying aust with some
- 10:46things as well. So Day's doing a good job overnight. So we've got
- 10:48a pretty good group and we all work together well. And that's it's kind
- 10:52of like I said, I think I told you before when you asked me
- 10:54a question about how everybody gets along with the be state level or city or
- 10:56whatever. Just seems to be a really good time to where we're all on
- 11:00the right page. May It's always a pleasure to talk to you. You're
- 11:03always upbeat, and it always a good way to kick off for Monday when
- 11:05we have y'at we'll talk again soon. Mayor. I appreciate it, y

- 15:43little bit later on the show. I mean, we just turn animal loose
- 15:46in a in a studio upstairs, and he's been creating all kinds of havoc
- 15:50on the airwaves in Charleston. So we're gonna get to him a little bit
- 15:54later on the show. But I want to welcome in now Google to Tory
- 15:56candidate Chris Miller. How are you, sir? Man A thousand? If
- 16:00I was any better day, if i'd be illegal well, and and they're
- 16:03in certain states, you are, but then I'm kidding, I'm kidding about
- 16:06So first of all, I got a lot of I want to get to
- 16:07you with you, sir, But how is a campaign overall going right now?
- 16:11Rocking and rolling and having an absolute blast? Over ninety three percent of
- 16:17all of our fundraising dollars that's come from inside of the state of West Virginia,
- 16:19and that's because we have been actively out jumping around for spot to spot
- 16:23all summer long. Um. You know, for example, I was in
- 16:27the Eastern Panhandle on Monday, Morgantown area, jumping around in a Putnam County
- 16:33fair. Spoke to a group of people in Putnam County last Sunday. It's
- 16:37just NonStop stuff. We've been having an absolute blast, and you know,
- 16:41the real secret sources is that our fundraising success. We've outraised everybody else combined.
- 16:48It has three and a half times the amount of cash on hand as
- 16:51the second closest person as we speak. So that's that's you know, we
- 16:55attribute that to our message and interacting with people. You know, we we
- 17:00know exactly where we are and we're having an absolute blasket and meet everybody around
- 17:03the state of West Virginia, and the responses that we're receiving, Dave are
- 17:07off the charts. Man, It's great. Chris. You said that a
- 17:11great number of those dollars are from within the state of West Virginia. How
- 17:15important is that to you in your campaign? Well, they're the ones that
- 17:18vote, right. You know, people from Florida and people from New Jersey
- 17:22and people from Washington, DC don't vote in West Virginia, so you know
- 17:26they're if they're pouring all kinds of money into a candidate, that makes you
- 17:27scratch your head and wonder why. But the people that are in the side
- 17:32of the state of West Virginia are the ones that are voting, are the
- 17:33ones that are supporting us, and that matters. That had huge impact and
- 17:38there are some new numbers that actually just came out about eight thirty or so
- 17:41this morning. I'm gonna get to those a little bit later on, but
- 17:44before I do that. Last week Chris I had on Brian Dayton from the
- 17:47West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, and he and the Chamber have been out about
- 17:51on the show and others talking about their polling and so early, but it
- 17:55looks like according to the polling and the Attorney General Patrick Morris, he's doing
- 17:57pretty well that I'll get more capital h as well as well, and you
- 18:00know, as are you. And again it's early, but I mean,
- 18:03I'm sure that you want to improve on that. Any comments on the chamber
- 18:07pole. UM. So you know I'm the numbers in a data guy,
- 18:11you are, and I've started my own data company, um, just to
- 18:15track what's happening in our country and in some fascinating stuff. But UM,
- 18:21here's what I'll say. There are good polls and good information and good data,
- 18:26and there are bad poles and bad information and bad data. And anytime
- 18:30that you have a poll that's got a standard deviation at twenty percent, that's
- 18:33not really great data. UM. I look at standard deviation that needs to
- 18:37be about five percent before you can really tell what explain for those for those
- 18:41who may not know what is standard deviations and stuff. It's the swinging percent
- 18:48of the accuracy of the number, which means basically that some of these polls
- 18:52numbers can swing twenty percent plus or mind us either way. That doesn't sound
- 18:56very accurate to me, right well, And as I said, it is
- 19:00earlier. It is very early in the you know, in the campaign,
- 19:03and a lot can change, and not so much necessarily in the in the
- 19:06governor's race. But when you look at some of those other races that were
- 19:08in the poll, and I'm not being critical the Chamber, don't get me
- 19:11wrong, but if you look at some of the other races like attorney general
- 19:14and in a secretary of state, wasn't wasn't even pulled just because it's so
- 19:18early and there isn't that there'sn't that buzz around those particular races. Yet that's
- 19:22exactly right at the end of the day, man, You know, it's
- 19:23funny because a lot of these early polls, these are a wall about political
- 19:26lead stuff, and elections at the end of the day are about the people,
- 19:30and it's understanding and knowing the people and what they're looking for and who
- 19:36you are as a person and how that stuff matches up. You know,
- 19:38elections are not about the political elite. They're not about early polling. They're
- 19:42about the voters and what the voters are looking for. And they're the ones
- 19:45that always decide, and a majority of the time they tend to get it
- 19:49right too, So that more important to me than polling are the voters and
- 19:57what the voters are saying, and what the voters are doing is they're they're
- 20:00speaking really really loud and clear to us that they're looking for something different.
- 20:04They want state government to be run more like a business. We have to
- 20:08have somebody upfront that's willing to promote and show how great our state is and
- 20:11how exciting the things are. That's here, you know, when we're talking
- 20:15about running state government more like a business. One of the other things that
- 20:18people really are tired of seeing as their tax dollars being wasted, and so
- 20:22they want every single dime of our state's government's budget audited. And I think
- 20:27that speaks very very strongly as well. You know, we need to have
- 20:32somebody upfront that knows how to make things happen and knows how to promote and
- 20:36knows how to leave with excitement, and also at the same time understands everything
- 20:40that is key for economic growth and development, driving down taxation to create business
- 20:45and commerce right here in the state of West Virginia. And that just matches
- 20:48up exactly with who we are and how we're going to win Talcus. You
- 20:49googn up too on Canada. Chris Miller here on five eighty Live. It's
- 20:52nine twenty eight five eighty Live present and parted by Meeks Realty Group. Harry's
- 20:56most Beautiful Properties Deserve the finest realtors. Meeks Realty Group is of the Mindline
- 21:00meets dot us are called three or four four four zero one one zero one.
- 21:03All right, Chris, So, about eight thirty or so, I
- 21:06get on my email, I'm preparing for the show, and I get some
- 21:08new information that was sent to me by you. And you distributed this information
- 21:14everywhere and it's going to be all over the news throughout the day. But
- 21:17for those that haven't seen it yet, what exactly break it down for us?
- 21:19What exactly does all this mean? Honestly, I still think it's just
- 21:23way too early to really tell. But what the new information out there has
- 21:27polling wise has a cent a virtual tie for second place in the governatorial race.
- 21:32We keep gaining ground, and like I said earlier, a lot of
- 21:34that has to do with the messaging and how we're interacting with people, in
- 21:38the excitement that comes around from us being around any group talking and interacting.
- 21:44So there's a long way to go, right there's a long hill to climb,
- 21:48and it's really really early and right now should not be a time to
- 21:52really vest faith or trust inside of polls. But if we're all talking about
- 21:57polls, I mean, I'm okay with being considered second place. That's not
- 22:00bad. Well, and when you look at that field, as I said,
- 22:03Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, you got yourself, you've got more capital,
- 22:07You've got Secretary State Macwarner, Auditor JB. Mccusky, there's a lot of
- 22:11big names in there, and a lot of times people are going to have
- 22:15to especially on the you know, when we look at the primary, people
- 22:18will have to look at it and kind of say, Okay, it doesn't
- 22:22matter what party you're talking about, they're gonna like more than one or two
- 22:23of those guys, you know, and they're gonna have to kind of make
- 22:26that decision. And that's the difference between me and everybody else. There's some
- 22:30good guys out there, right, but they're all the same person. They're
- 22:33all bureaucrats, politicians, and attorneys. It doesn't matter who you're talking about
- 22:37in the race, every single one of them is that. And people are
- 22:41looking for something different. They're looking for some excitement. It's not a time
- 22:45for politicians and lawyers and bureaucrats to be running things. It's a time for
- 22:48entrepreneurs and people willing to work to seventy hours a week to make stuff happen,
- 22:52to lead from the front, be active and engage promote the state.
- 22:56I mean, that's exactly who you are. That's exactly what we're going to
- 23:00do. We're just different than everybody else. And I love that. I
- 23:04love those odds. I absolutely love being the outsider. Love being the only
- 23:10guy that is a business leader in the community and a business leader all around
- 23:12in the state. I mean, these are all things that I take pride
- 23:15in, and it just matches up with what the people in West Virginia are
- 23:18looking for. They're tired of the politics, and you know, they're tired
- 23:21of the same old, same old and they're also tired of that good old
- 23:22boy system that's been running our state for a way too all. And I'm
- 23:26not a part of any of that stuff. Talk with Chris Millner again,
- 23:30candadate for governor, And Chris, with all due respect, I've ever since
- 23:34I mentioned once because we originally had your scheduled to be on last week.
- 23:37As of things happened, we had to work around your schedule a little bit.
- 23:40But anytime I've mentioned your name, I always get a and probably orchestrated.
- 23:44You know, a boatload of texts that come into the line here asking
- 23:48about things like, you know, the the PPG loans that went out and
- 23:52things of that nature, and your car dealerships and things of that nature.
- 23:56Do you care to comment on any of that? Which one and particular we'll
- 24:00have a common owner thing. Well, I have a text right now that
- 24:03said the three million dollars of taxpayer dollars for your family car lots and some
- 24:07that went for a farm or something that your family owns. Do you want
- 24:11to I mean, I don't know all the details. Do you want to
- 24:12address that? So what they're referring to are the PPP loans that happened during
- 24:18the pandemic, and this is something that I'm very very proud of those we
- 24:22use for their purpose. We kept all of our employees employed throughout the entire
- 24:26pandemic and actually paid them an average of one hundred and fifteen percent of their
- 24:30twenty nineteen earnings in twenty twenty while the pandemic was happening. Guaranteed income,
- 24:37no fans or butts about it, for every single one of our employees,
- 24:41all across all of our organizations. And I'm not talking about you know,
- 24:45a couple hundred employees here. We employ six hundred people, four hundred of
- 24:48which are inside of the state of West Virginia, and I was able to
- 24:52pay each and every one of those families one hundred and fifteen percent of their
- 24:56average twenty nineteen earnings during the pandemic. When I mean, we can call
- 25:00it a scamdemic now, but during that entire time where everybody was scared and
- 25:03everybody's worried about losing their job and taking care of their families, we made
- 25:07sure that every single one of the people that worked for us had income that
- 25:12was there to take care of their families, and it was way more than
- 25:15what they made in twenty nineteen, and we passed every single penny of that
- 25:18stuff onto our people where it belonged. So I'll hang my hat on that
- 25:22one man. I want to talk about name recognition. You're very well known,
- 25:26of course, you're in this part of the world, your car ads
- 25:27and the other businesses that you've been a part of. Your very successful business
- 25:32person. But sometimes, Chris, it can be hard for someone to get
- 25:36noticed, let's say in the eastern Panhand or in the Wheeling area or something
- 25:40like that. You know, Patrick Morrissey has a title of Attorney General after
- 25:42his name, so more people are going to be familiar with him. Same
- 25:45with some of the other officeholders, Mac Warner and J. B. Mccusky
- 25:48and others that are in there. How are you overcoming the name recognition problem
- 25:52outside the Huntington Charlestonnario Through a lot of travel, a lot of phone calls,
- 25:57and a lot of face to face meetings. You know, we're in
- 26:00Jefferson County all day last Monday. It was an all day thing. We
- 26:06are moving around through all of the locations of the state all the remaining part
- 26:11of twenty twenty three, and we'll be doing the same thing through twenty twenty
- 26:14four. And the more people that I meet and the more people that I
- 26:15interact with, and the more people that I talk to, the better it
- 26:18is. Because people hear me, they go, wait a minute, gut
- 26:21and talk like the politician. He talks like a West Virginia and they like
- 26:23that a lot, and they understand what we're saying and what we're doing and
- 26:27what we're going to focus on, which is jobs and economic growth and reducing
- 26:30taxes more and turning West Virginia into a business friendly state, and also doing
- 26:37things a little differently. Right we're moving into a time where everything that we
- 26:41do is going to revolve around power. And you look at West Virginia.
- 26:47We have an incredible amount of coal, We have an incredible amount of natural
- 26:49gas, we have the potential for nuclear and we have an incredible amount of
- 26:52water that passes through our state. And all of this stuff adds up to
- 26:56where we can leverage our natural resources and use it to drive down the cost
- 27:00of power for our people. Be the state in the Union that has the
- 27:04cheapest power in the country and use that as a foundation of primary economic growth
- 27:11and development. Because right now we've got a system where we're not thinking about
- 27:15all the West Virginians. We get businesses that come in, we work this
- 27:18special deal with them, and they get exempt from all the taxes that the
- 27:22standard businesses have to pay that are here in the state, and they get
- 27:26all kinds of benefits, etc. Etc. Etc. And guess what the
- 27:33average every day Joe gets left handing hind tribe. And if we used power
- 27:37as the primary source of economic growth and development, not only will it bring
- 27:41businesses and commerce to us, but you think about Mo and Paul Kettle in
- 27:45their white pick offense. Both of them are on Social Security and power keeps
- 27:49going up in cost, and eggs keep going up in cost, and milk
- 27:52keeps going up in cost. If we are able to cut their power bill
- 27:56by fifty to seventy percent, we've done something meaningful and impactful in their lives
- 28:00as well. And that's what I think we need to move the state of
- 28:04West Virginia for it is we need to think about what we're going to do
- 28:07that can last an incredibly long time, and power, I'm convinced, is
- 28:11the reason for that talk with Chris Miller. A couple more questions here before
- 28:15we let you go. Chris, the electorate in America, or at least
- 28:18certain to a certain extent, seems to be looking elsewhere for candidates. And
- 28:22what I mean by that is something like sixty percent of all voters, regardless
- 28:26of party, don't want Joe Biden to be the nominee for president. Around
- 28:29fifty percent of Americans Republican and Democrats don't want Donald Trump to be the nominee.
- 28:34And when you look at some of these people, as you mentioned,
- 28:37that have been in office for a while, the different offices some of the
- 28:40opposition, do you think that that helps you because you are seen by some
- 28:45at least as an outsider, and this is your first attempt at an elected
- 28:48position. Absolutely, this is the only job that I'll ever want in politics.
- 28:52It's the only job that it treats me because I know it's where we
- 28:56can make the largest amount of difference. I'm not like the rest of these
- 29:00people, you know. I'm a boxer and a bison farmer and a business
- 29:03owner. I employ a bunch of people in the state of West Virginia.
- 29:07I signed the front and the back of paychecks. I know what it's like
- 29:11to grind and make sure that your people are taking care of and I'm just
- 29:15not a bureaucrat or a politician or a lawyer. That's just not me.
- 29:19And that's what we need right now. Leading our country is a business as
- 29:23business. Guys, entrepreneurs, free thinkers, people are outside of the box
- 29:27and aren't beholden to special interest or lobbying either. A lot of these guys
- 29:32are for sale. I'm not for sale. Before we let you go the
- 29:34final question, I promise. I just keep thinking of things to ask you,
- 29:37because I know you're a very you'd like to you like to answer questions.
- 29:41All right, it's looking like Steve Williams, Mayor of Huntington, somebody
- 29:44is from your part of the world. You know. Mayor Williams very well
- 29:47will be. He's going to throw his having in the ring. He's not
- 29:48officially done it yet, but he probably will to be the the the run
- 29:53of the person the candidate on the Democratic side. Don't know whether I have
- 29:56any opposition or not, but more than more than likely he's going to be
- 29:59the No. Many if you get through the primary, I can so all
- 30:02these other opponents. What about a match up with Steve Williams, And what
- 30:03do you think about Steve Williams possibly running for governor. You know, I'm
- 30:08not even gonna worry about that right now. You know, I know Steve,
- 30:11nice guy, nice enough guy, been friends with my family for a
- 30:15long time. And more importantly, Steve's mom was my third grade teacher,
- 30:18and she was one of the most impactful people when it came to my education
- 30:22through elementary school. I love that lady to death. She is terrific.
- 30:27The rest of the stuff, you know, you've got to have the right
- 30:29person running the state. And this is not a job for politicians and bureaucrats.
- 30:34It's just not that job. We need someone that understands how to employee
- 30:37people, understands how to manage to run businesses. You know, our state's
- 30:41budget is about four point six billion dollars. When you take out a couple
- 30:45of things like the lottery Commission and all of my businesses combined, I've got
- 30:49about twenty six different enterprises that have an incredible amount of revenue that passes through
- 30:53them. And honestly, Dave, I'm the only person in the state that
- 30:57I know of that is an injury did in running that has the aptitude and
- 31:03the ability to handle a budget that big, to actually manage money that size.
- 31:08This is not something that politicians and bureaucrats are really capable of because they
- 31:12don't know how to manage and spend our money. So it doesn't matter who
- 31:15I'm running against. I hang my hat on what I'm able to do and
- 31:18what I have done, and that's the only thing I'm gonna worry about.
- 31:21I'm not going to talk bad about other people or anything like that. I'm
- 31:25just gonna make sure and earn the voters trust and show them that I'm the
- 31:29right guy for the job because I'm a West Virginian just like them, and
- 31:30I've done a little bit of everything in my life, and I understand where
- 31:33we are and what we need to be doing. Chris, always a pleasure
- 31:37to talk to you. Where can people learn more about your campaign? We

- 34:54over by our state government. U the Texas so sick of hearing people try
- 35:01to make some kind of connection between PPP loans and student loans. Loans were
- 35:07given because the vast majority of businesses, primarily small businesses, were deemed non
- 35:10essential, which destroyed them and forced them to close because of this government.
- 35:19Texas. Chris Miller social conservative. Yes, thinks government should be around like

- 35:30tex says, I'm just one person, coordinated by myself, trying to understand
- 35:34why a supposed to supposed a fiscal Republican would take a three million dollars loan
- 35:38and forgive herself of that loan. I'm just jealous because I wish I could
- 35:42have the taxpayers helped me out like That's tex says Dear Dave. Please tell
- 35:52Chris Miller that the average West Virginia dude is not a boxer or a bison
- 35:55farmer. You know who is Steve freaking Animal. Mike drop with the feedback
- 36:02and Texas, get missus Miller's kids off the radio and get to the Animal.
- 36:07That's crazy talk. It's crazy talk, Steve Animal. Yes, sir,
- 36:13is with us right? How are you, my friend? I am
- 36:16apparently have been sucked into the w v r C family. Yes, indeed,
- 36:25the all new ninety eight point seven West Virginia's Wild, Wonderful Classic Rock
- 36:30the Mountain is on Steve Animal Morning Guy. And I gotta tell you,
- 36:35you know, I knew this was launching. We you know, it's been
- 36:37we teased it for a while. I get in my vehicle this morning,
- 36:39like a whole lot of other people in the valley, I get in turn
- 36:43on the vehicle there and I go over to ninety eight point seven and I
- 36:46hear Steve Animal and suddenly I'm like a three year old kid again. Oh
- 36:52no, wait a minute, I wasn't that young. But that hurt.
- 36:55Everything hurts when you're our eight. Yeah. But what response so far?
- 37:00Man? I mean, I mean not only to this, I want to
- 37:02talk about the station, but also to having you back on the airways for
- 37:06the first time in how many years? A little over eleven years, so
- 37:10it was uh yeah, twenty yeah, twenty twelve, so twelve years.
- 37:16It was fantastic response this morning, Uh waiting for me in the parking lot,
- 37:23my co hurt crime Larry Shockley. Shockley did what did he not come
- 37:28down with you? No, he hadd to run, but uh yeah,
- 37:30we'll drag him on at some point. So okay, got some family stuff
- 37:35taking care of. Well, it's it's it's interesting because you know, we
- 37:38went on the air at six o'club. We've been talking about this, We've
- 37:40been insider information here. There's a thing called stunting in radio, which basically
- 37:45means that you just play random stuff to get people interested. And if you
- 37:49noticed, all of the songs when they launched this thing Thursday morning had been
- 37:52animal themed, yes, of all different varieties. And then we come in
- 37:54here and Steve animals on your radio. But this morning, you know,
- 37:58um got to WUKTV thre big shout out to Andy Bernhardt from thirteen. Was
- 38:02waiting in the parking lot when I got here this morning, and she hobbled
- 38:06in on one foot she did, which was awesome she did. And then
- 38:09I understand I was in hair and makeup getting ready for this show. But
- 38:14I understand that you need more hair and makeup. I understand that WSAZ I
- 38:19think came into the story. And so let me recap some of the changes
- 38:23around here. So here's what we did, all right, and you may
- 38:25need a program to follow this. So we moved our country station, which
- 38:30was one of seven three kaz to ninety five point three, replacing Bloomberg Radio.
- 38:35We then moved ninety eight point seven with Woody Woods and the others.
- 38:40That's the beat to one oh seven three, And then we put this brand
- 38:44new station ninety eight point seven to mouth and on this morning featuring Steve Animal
- 38:49and so I guess we're caught up now, right, Yes, So it
- 38:52has been an awesome day. We actually had phone calls today Ken and between
- 38:57him and Fred Francis, our engineer got the lines worked out last night.
- 39:00Uh, it's so every everything's coming together. A few glutches this morning,
- 39:06but to be expected, especially with computers. Yeah, because these computers are
- 39:10a passing fat They're awful. Yeah, you and I are from the days
- 39:15of cart machines and and real to real machines and records and you know things
- 39:20of that abacus and the tablet. I want to talk about your career a
- 39:25little bit now. You know you ain't from here originally, but how did
- 39:30a young animal get involved in radio and how did you end up in West
- 39:34Virginia as a kid. I just kind of drifted to it. I had
- 39:37received a transistor radio, you know, for my birthday, and that thing
- 39:42was basically connected to me twenty four seven until it melted and I needed another
- 39:46one. And um, I just loved listening to the radio and just mimicking
- 39:51the jocks that we're on there. Um, and it's I thought. I
- 39:58actually, uh in high school, I was actually headed into going to the
- 40:01Pittsburgh School of Art Design, and we actually had a radio station at one
- 40:05of the other high schools. So buddy of mine, uh, Bill plom
- 40:08He's like, he's like, you should do radio. He's like, you
- 40:12got the character to and uh and the voice compliments a mom and dad in
- 40:15the face because because we never get tired of hearing that joke that yeah.
- 40:22So from there, Uh, Actually it was kind of funny because I didn't
- 40:27make the audition cut. I remember looking down at the piece of paper that
- 40:31mister lampin and had filled out, and people either had check pluses or minuses,
- 40:36and I actually had a check minus, and but the pencil was sitting
- 40:39right there, and I gave myself a plus. And now the rest is
- 40:42history. I changed my own course. Well, Michael Jordan got cut from
- 40:46his high school basketball team too, so so um you are the Michael Jordan
- 40:51Radio. Thank you. Now, now you worked a few other stations around
- 40:54the Tri Citary, most notably in Saint Albans, and then you were out
- 40:58of the business with your real estate and holdings and with your company East Coast
- 41:04Teas quick cheap plug for those two find establishments. Thank you. And still
- 41:07doing real estate with Better Homes and Gardens, real Estate Central with Josh McGrath
- 41:12and that crew. Still have my rentals, still doing the radio, still
- 41:15have the T shirt shop. We opened up the Vinyl frontier where we're rewrapping
- 41:20all the station vehicles here. If you haven't noticed the upgrade in the parking
- 41:23lots. You do something with the engines that would be good, but you
- 41:25only do the outside right, right, Yeah, all on, I got
- 41:30some w D forty radio, but I don't think it's going to help a
- 41:32couple of the vehicles we have here. But with all those things going on,
- 41:37I mean, you know East Coast teas, I mean, you guys
- 41:38are just everywhere all over the state and other areas. Try you got that,
- 41:45you got their you know, your rentals and all of this other so
- 41:47you know, somebody, so one day you say, well, let's go
- 41:51do radio. Let's go get up at four o'clock in the morning. Again,
- 41:53I don't enjoy sleeping. I need to be moving in gravy. It's
- 41:57way overrated. Yea, it is. So so see in all seriousness,
- 42:00and we'll do this, we'll take a break, will continue a little bit
- 42:02more. Well, I mean, why why are you doing this? Because
- 42:07well, you know, the radio is something that gets into your system,
- 42:10into your blood, and that's just much like a fungus. Yeah, pretty
- 42:15much. And so when the idea came up, I was like, oh
- 42:17really, you guys sure, it's like you want this in your building?
- 42:22And so yeah, no, I missed it greatly dearly. And they were
- 42:29very kind and they said they asked, would you like to come back to
- 42:32radio? Nobody's asked so until now. So and now you're here. I
- 42:37am the station's ninety eight point seven West Virginia's wild a wonderful classic rock,

- 45:51sarcasm there. I think you know a successful businessman. I think that might
- 45:55have been a show. I don't know. Don't want to read too much
- 45:58in the text you say anibals here from our new station ninety eight point seven
- 46:02West Virginia's Wild and wonderful classic Rock the Mountain, the Mountain, Come to
- 46:07the Mountain top not got some text here? So many virtually vitally important issues
- 46:19that are caused you the Marxist destruction of our republic. I would love to
- 46:22know why the same person keeps texting and almost daily about legalizing pot. If
- 46:27that's your priority, you may have a problem and should seek treatment. So
- 46:30it's a text TEXTA says, over the weekend, I heard Elvis on ninety
- 46:32eight point seven. Does that mean this new format will include sixties rock?
- 46:36Also, you know that's a good question. I didn't work. Yeah,
- 46:42but they don't tell me everything the computer does at all. You did see
- 46:45Elvis twice in concert, so all right, So, um, you know
- 46:51this whole thing started. I mean, well, I had a small part,
- 46:53in a very small part, and that's when I had you on the
- 46:55show to talk about something. I don't even know what we were talking about.
- 46:59This text fine like blew up with people Steve Animals Steve animal and so
- 47:02I went upstairs to the powers of me and I said, look look at
- 47:06this this People still remember this guy. He's not dead yet, he's still
- 47:10alive. So let's talk about the station. What can people expect from ninety
- 47:14eight point seventh the Mountain? Well, like over the weekend. Actually on
- 47:19Friday, Joe had asked, uh, you know, so, what do
- 47:21you have plan for my day? Ask like, absolutely nothing, because it's
- 47:27radio, because it's radio. But yeah, I mean so we're firing this
- 47:30thing back up. We knew the area needed a good classic rock station and
- 47:37they were kind enough to reach out to me to dig my carcass up off
- 47:42the ground. And you know, it's like, hey, kick him?
- 47:45Is he still alive? And I want to talk about that for a moment,
- 47:47because you know, there are various places people can get music now.
- 47:52I mean, you know, back in our day you had the radio,
- 47:54and you maybe somebody would show up on Don Kersonal's rock concert or something.
- 47:59Expert what's all we have? But now you've got all these different music sources,
- 48:01and of course you know and even here as far as terrestrial radio goes,
- 48:06I mean, there's other places for rock music in the Charleston honey to
- 48:08market. With all due respect to all that, but what sets the Mountain
- 48:12apart from those other stations. Let's just talk to restaural radio. The restaural
- 48:15radio, like you said, you can get the app or listen at least
- 48:20you can listen like online or get the app now, but having somebody with
- 48:23a pulse, a live person there that you can actually talk to or relate
- 48:28to, or you know, somebody there to talk to you versus just a
- 48:30generic playlist, which is which is fine. I guess if you're at a
- 48:35party and just want some background noise. But if you're wanting to hear some
- 48:39music, maybe talk with somebody, win something for free. You know,
- 48:44you know, the radio is still here, and it still matters whether you're
- 48:47driving into work just to get a local feel or beat on what's happening in
- 48:52your city. You're not going to get that on the worldwide Web now.
- 48:57And what sets I think the station apart from some of the others, is
- 49:00that we are confined by our own doing to being classic rock. So when
- 49:06when if you're a rock guy like you and I are, when you turned
- 49:08it on, you're you're going to hear music that you recognize. We're not
- 49:14doing new stuff, and that's fine for those of are, but that's not
- 49:16what we are. We are classic rock. So you're going to hear I
- 49:19mean, driving in this morning, I'm hearing Billy Squire, I'm hearing the
- 49:22Eagles, Employers Cult, Yes, some Pearl Jam, Collective Soul. Those
- 49:27guys are now you know, we're talking twenty thirty years old these songs.
- 49:30Even though I was there when we broke the bands. It's like now,
- 49:35we're defining it as a classic. Oh god, yeah, there's that is
- 49:38kind of funny you mentioned that because when we had we had Andy Myrnhart and
- 49:40folks from thirteen up here earlier this morning. I was in the studio with
- 49:44you at that time and you played Pearl Jam and my mind goes to,
- 49:47why is he playing Pearl Jam? And oh, yeah, that's because it's
- 49:52thirty five years old. That's why mine mind blown out. I know the
- 49:55Facebook page for the Mountain is up h and the streaming is there. Yeah,
- 50:00there, so they I've received so many lips and beeps, but I
- 50:05know the Facebook page is up there this morning, UM find it, like
- 50:08it, share it with a friend, and we are streaming live. I
- 50:13know. If you go to the web page the Mountain ninety eight point seven,
- 50:15the Mountain dot com, just it's streaming live at the top and we'll
- 50:20get the and all that stuff. We'll be there. Quick reminder of their
- 50:22phone calls to five eighty live or service of Biggley Piggley Wiggily Texts services provided

- 50:31most of my bad decisions. Love that dude. Thank you. I'm glad
- 50:37you're still with me, are you? Are you happy to know that you're
- 50:40the soundtrack to somebody's bad decisions over the year, Steve, I feel that
- 50:44there are more children conceived during the Steve Animal Live broadcasts over the last thirty
- 50:49years than most other broadcasts. They also, shall I say this on the
- 50:53ear? I mean, if I get fired, can I come work at
- 50:55your station? They referred to listening to you as an eargasm. Oh heck,
- 51:00yeah, I don't know, Ryan, Can I say that on the
- 51:05air? I guess I can. Can? I don't care. He's well,
- 51:10he's the one that's his name's on the transmitter log. So so we
- 51:15get in trouble, it's Ryano that goes down, not me. So uh
- 51:17um. You know, I'm looking forward to it in here, and we
- 51:21got to wrap it up. But I will say this. You know,
- 51:22as long as you and I have been friends, which is like one hundred
- 51:25and eighty eight years, this is the first time that we've ever worked for
- 51:30the same company. We've you know, know each other. We and of
- 51:32course big props our friend is watching us right now. Late great Papa Jay
- 51:39Nunley for years you and Jay worked together, and uh, that's the only
- 51:44thing I could think of. You know, this morning, I wanted to
- 51:45send you a good luck text, like you needed a good luck text for
- 51:49me. Uh, And I sent it and I said, I gave you
- 51:52a big Papa Jay Nunley quote textures in my studio. So yeah, and
- 51:57I love you, man, God bless you big Papa j Nunley. All
- 52:00right, we'll be listening ninety eight point seven West Virginia's Wild and Wonderful Classic

- 52:28pickle ball tomorrow and house candidate Tristan Levitt is on the show as well.
