- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 11th of
- 0:16December. And I know it feels like I say
- 0:18it every day, but I really am grateful that you have tapped on
- 0:22play so that you can join me in continuing this journey through
- 0:26God's word. I know I am a sentimental
- 0:29schmuck, but hey, that's that's just how I'm hard wired.
- 0:33So believe me when I say it is so great to have your company.
- 0:37So great that you and I can go on this journey and that every
- 0:41day we get to just dive in for a moment into God's word and to
- 0:45hear these words written all that time ago expressly so that
- 0:51you and I and all believers throughout time can come before
- 0:55God and hear these words. And these words really can edify
- 1:00us and shape us for a life of God's service.
- 1:04And talking about a life of God's service.
- 1:06This this chapter really does continue talking about poor old
- 1:10Paul in captivity in Rome. And you might think the poor
- 1:15guy, how limiting for his his missionary journeys and his
- 1:19life, but he was forewarned and he knew what he was walking
- 1:23into, but he still walked into it boldly, confident that God
- 1:27would use him in that space. So it's a lovely example for us
- 1:32that we can shift our priorities to be all about God's Kingdom
- 1:36and not what's most comfy for us, which is, well, pretty much
- 1:40exactly the lens that the world uses to evaluate things.
- 1:44So let us continue to hear the story.
- 1:46What happens to Paul as we read together Acts chapter 23?
- 2:00Gazing intently at the high council, Paul began.
- 2:05Brothers, I have always lived before God with a clear
- 2:09conscience. Instantly Ananias, the high
- 2:13priest, commanded those close to Paul to slap him on the mouth.
- 2:16But Paul said to him, God will slap you, you corrupt hypocrite,
- 2:22what kind of judge are you to break the law yourself by
- 2:25ordering me struck like that? Those standing near Paul said to
- 2:29him, Do you dare to insult God's high priest?
- 2:35I'm sorry brothers, I didn't realise he was the high priest,
- 2:39Paul replied, For the scriptures say you must not speak evil of
- 2:43any of your rulers. Paul realised that some members
- 2:47of the high council were Sadducees and some were
- 2:51Pharisees. So he shouted, Brothers, I am a
- 2:55Pharisee, as were my ancestors, and I am on trial because my
- 3:00hope is in the resurrection of the dead.
- 3:03This divided the council, the Pharisees against the Sadducees,
- 3:08for the Sadducees say there is no resurrection or angels or
- 3:12spirits, but the Pharisees believe in all of these.
- 3:16So there was a great uproar. Some of the teachers of
- 3:20religious law who were Pharisees jumped up and began to argue
- 3:24forcefully. We see nothing wrong with him,
- 3:27they shouted. Perhaps a spirit or an Angel
- 3:30spoke to him. As the conflict grew more
- 3:34violent, the commander was afraid they would tear Paul
- 3:37apart, so he ordered his soldiers to go and rescue him by
- 3:42force and take him back to the fortress.
- 3:46That night the Lord appeared to Paul and said, Be encouraged.
- 3:51Paul, just as you have been a witness to me here in Jerusalem,
- 3:56you must preach the good news in Rome as well.
- 4:01The next morning a group of Jews got together and bound
- 4:05themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had
- 4:09killed Paul. There were more than 40 of them
- 4:12in the conspiracy. They went to the leading priests
- 4:15and elders and told them we have bound ourselves with an oath to
- 4:20eat nothing until we have killed Paul.
- 4:23So you and the High Council should ask the commander to
- 4:27bring Paul back to the council again.
- 4:30Pretend you want to examine his case more carefully.
- 4:33We will kill him on the way. But Paul's nephew, his sister's
- 4:38son, heard of their plan and went to the fortress and told
- 4:41Paul. Paul called for one of the Roman
- 4:44officers and said, Take this young man to the commander, he
- 4:48has something important to tell him.
- 4:51So the officer did, explaining Paul, the prisoner called me
- 4:56over and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has
- 5:00something to tell you. The commander took his hand, led
- 5:04him aside and asked, What is it you want to tell me?
- 5:09Paul's nephew told him some Jews are going to ask you to bring
- 5:14Paul before the High council tomorrow, pretending they want
- 5:18to get some more information. But don't do it.
- 5:22There are more than 14 men hiding along the way, ready to
- 5:26ambush him. They have vowed not to eat or
- 5:30drink anything until they have killed him.
- 5:33They are ready now, just waiting for your consent.
- 5:38Don't let anyone know you told me this, the commander warned
- 5:43the young man. Then the commander called two of
- 5:46his officers and ordered. Get 200 soldiers ready to leave
- 5:51for say Syria at 9:00 tonight. Also take 200 Spearman and 70
- 5:57mounted troops. Provide horses for Paul to ride
- 6:01and get him safely to Governor Felix.
- 6:05Then he wrote this letter to the governor from Claudius Lyceus to
- 6:10His Excellency Governor Felix. Greetings.
- 6:15This man was seized by some Jews and they were about to kill him
- 6:19when I arrived with the troops. When I learned that he was a
- 6:23Roman citizen, I removed him to safety.
- 6:27Then I took him to their high council to try to learn the
- 6:31basis of the accusations against him.
- 6:33I soon discovered the charge was something regarding their
- 6:37religious law, certainly nothing worthy of imprisonment or death.
- 6:42But when I was informed of a plot to kill him, I immediately
- 6:46sent him on to you. I have told his accusers to
- 6:49bring their charges before you. So that night, as ordered, the
- 6:55soldiers took Paul as far as Auntie Patras.
- 6:59They returned to the fortress the next morning while the
- 7:01mounted troops took him on to say Syria.
- 7:05When they arrived in Caesarea, they presented Paul and the
- 7:08letter to Governor Felix. He read it and then asked Paul
- 7:13what province he was from. Cecilia, Paul answered.
- 7:18I will hear your case myself when your accusers arrive, the
- 7:22governor told him. Then the governor ordered him
- 7:26kept in the prison at Herod's headquarters.
- 7:39Lord, you call us to live a life different from what the world
- 7:43would tell us to do, but to live a life focused on you and your
- 7:47Kingdom priorities. And Lord, you know that that can
- 7:49be hard as sometimes it feels like we operate in a vacuum
- 7:54against the tide. But in this chapter, we hear
- 7:57your words saying, be encouraged Paul, as he witnesses and lives
- 8:05truly following you, our Lord Jesus, I pray that we too would
- 8:10hear your words of encouragement, that you would
- 8:14spur us on to continue living our life attuned to you and your
- 8:18will and your Kingdom. And Lord, there may well be
- 8:23moments where we can be your voice of encouragement.
- 8:27So I pray that you would prompt us and give us a heart of
- 8:31encouragement that when we spend time with our brothers and
- 8:35sisters in faith that we can be your word of encouragement to
- 8:40them, building up your people to continue living truly for you.
- 8:45And thank you that you are a God of encouragement and a God of
- 8:52building up and a God of equipping and empowering.
- 8:56And thank you for the gift of your Spirit, the enabler, the
- 9:00healer, the comforter who lives in US and inspires us.
- 9:07Ah, you are a good, good God who does so much for us.
- 9:12Your children inspire us with your encouragement to be your
- 9:17encouragement. And we pray all of this in your
- 9:20name, Jesus, Amen.
