- 0:05Speaker 1: The Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek podcast.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to Trek Cast, the Galaxy's most unpredictable
- 0:24Speaker 2: Star Trek podcast. I am one of your hosts, Daniel
- 0:27Speaker 2: Lobardo with me as always, we have Daniel Reyes, Scott
- 0:32Speaker 2: Strongbeard Bowers and this is a special trek Cast crossover.
- 0:38Speaker 2: A right, So we've got a couple of guys here.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I think one is from the Mister Belvedere podcast, the
- 0:44Speaker 2: others from the Love Vote the Love Boat podcast. I
- 0:49Speaker 2: don't know. I met these guys two minutes ago, so
- 0:54Speaker 2: maybe they could tell us who they are.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Matt, why don't you go first?
- 1:00Speaker 4: Yeah? Meg, Yeah, I'm Matt.
- 1:02Speaker 5: I'm one of the co hosts of the pod Race podcast,
- 1:05Speaker 5: which is a Star Trek beat Space nine podcast. My
- 1:08Speaker 5: co host Elisa and I watched Star Trek beat Space
- 1:10Speaker 5: nine and share our deep and i reverent thoughts on
- 1:13Speaker 5: our favorite Star Trek series.
- 1:14Speaker 6: Nice and I am I'm Patrick from the It's Got
- 1:18Speaker 6: Star Trek podcast. My co hosts Dan Jesse and I
- 1:23Speaker 6: have a weekly sort of humor centric go all over
- 1:27Speaker 6: the Star Trek universe. We cover the live the new
- 1:29Speaker 6: shows when they're airing otherwise. We have an algorithm that
- 1:33Speaker 6: we've applied that selects the next topic for us from
- 1:37Speaker 6: some point in the Star Trek franchise.
- 1:40Speaker 3: And so we try not to be too serious, just
- 1:42Speaker 3: have a little fun every week.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Nice and are you in space right now? Is that
- 1:45Speaker 4: what's going on?
- 1:46Speaker 3: I'm in space?
- 1:47Speaker 6: Yeah, And I actually had a cruise ship in space.
- 1:50Speaker 6: Because the reality behind me. When I've not used this
- 1:55Speaker 6: clever little background, people think I'm in a murder room.
- 1:58Speaker 3: I'm in my old I think exactly. You know what,
- 2:07Speaker 3: thanks for having me on on on the show today.
- 2:09Speaker 2: You know what, you could podcast? You can literally podcast
- 2:12Speaker 2: from anywhere. I'm digging the car.
- 2:17Speaker 3: That's great.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I got I got a family, I got kids at
- 2:21Speaker 2: home that there's just no quiet spot. So I've been
- 2:23Speaker 2: I've been doing this podcast from the driveway for how
- 2:26Speaker 2: long have we been doing this? Daniel like like.
- 2:30Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, you guys were doing this before me.
- 2:35Speaker 2: That's right. But I mean I'm out in the world. Life,
- 2:38Speaker 2: life goes on. There's people walking by.
- 2:40Speaker 4: You see, you're exploring strange new worlds in New York.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I've taken I've taken deliveries from Amazon. Want that podcast
- 2:49Speaker 2: Jehovah's Witnesses. Jehovah's Witnesses have approached. It's good. It's good.
- 2:56Speaker 2: It's right. That's right, it's all good.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Well, we're all we're all gathered together today to discuss
- 3:02Speaker 4: the health of Star Trek, right, that's right. Yes, we're
- 3:10Speaker 4: going to talk about the current state of the franchise,
- 3:13Speaker 4: how things are going, and that's why we wanted to
- 3:14Speaker 4: bring on some other podcasts to to talk about it.
- 3:17Speaker 4: So it's not just us, but overall what the fans
- 3:19Speaker 4: are thinking. We did a survey. We had quite a
- 3:22Speaker 4: lot of people fill out the survey and we I
- 3:25Speaker 4: think we got a pretty good temperature check.
- 3:27Speaker 7: I'm looking forward to see the results of that.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, me too. So but before that, we should
- 3:33Speaker 4: get into Star Trek News since there's gonna be a
- 3:35Speaker 4: lot so.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Yeah, still we go Star Trek News.
- 3:42Speaker 4: So our first bit of Star Trek News is some
- 3:44Speaker 4: very sad news comes to us from Deadline and unfortunately
- 3:49Speaker 4: Roberto or See, one of the writers and producers of
- 3:52Speaker 4: the Star Trek reboot films, has passed away. He was
- 3:56Speaker 4: fifty one years old. He was also one of the
- 3:59Speaker 4: writers in direct producers of the Transformers films a few
- 4:02Speaker 4: of those. He was fifty one years old. He passed
- 4:06Speaker 4: away on February twenty fifth, looks like after a battle
- 4:09Speaker 4: with kidney disease or as. He was also known for
- 4:12Speaker 4: being the collaborator with Robert Kirtman or Kurtzman. So yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 4: that's all we know about that. Also, we had another
- 4:24Speaker 4: death in Hollywood to kind of talk about, Yeah, Gene Hackman. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 4: that that should not be failed to be mentioned. Interesting
- 4:34Speaker 4: circumstances of that one right now, but we will.
- 4:37Speaker 7: Find still unfolding.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Still unfolding. Yeah, yeah, that one's a weird one.
- 4:43Speaker 6: Well, normally with a ninety five year old actor, you're like, oh, well,
- 4:46Speaker 6: you know, yeah, exactly, yea. But because of the bizarre circumstances,
- 4:50Speaker 6: it's yeah, his wife.
- 4:51Speaker 2: And the dog, and like yeah, yeah, yeah, it was
- 4:54Speaker 2: likely it was likely carbon monoxide.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Well I've heard they ruled that out ready.
- 5:00Speaker 7: Yeah, they came in that, they came in check checked
- 5:03Speaker 7: the gas. They they said that they already checked the
- 5:05Speaker 7: bodies for signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- 5:08Speaker 2: They said no, all right, So I haven't been paying attention.
- 5:11Speaker 7: They were saying there was no foul play, but now
- 5:13Speaker 7: they're saying it's suspicious.
- 5:15Speaker 6: There's pills strewn about, but they don't know if that
- 5:17Speaker 6: was an act, you know, just tipping it over while
- 5:20Speaker 6: passing out or I don't know. And then there were
- 5:22Speaker 6: two other dogs that weren't affected. They were found roaming around.
- 5:25Speaker 6: So I mean it's a real proper mystery. It'll be
- 5:28Speaker 6: at the top of many podcasts to come, no doubt
- 5:30Speaker 6: and tell them.
- 5:32Speaker 5: So all right, Patrick's always looking for an angle podcast.
- 5:38Speaker 7: Yeah, he was a very prolific actor. Of course, I
- 5:40Speaker 7: will always know him as Lex Luthor.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yes, yes, great, greatest criminal mind of our age.
- 5:46Speaker 8: That all right.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Our next news story comes to us from Trek News
- 5:52Speaker 4: or trek news dot net, and we are getting more
- 5:55Speaker 4: information about the Star Trek audio series that's coming around. Yes, yeah,
- 6:02Speaker 4: Star Trek CON's coming at some point this year twenty
- 6:06Speaker 4: five and they have hired lost actor Navian Andrews as
- 6:12Speaker 4: con con. You believe it, We have a new con. Wow,
- 6:16Speaker 4: I was right there. That was right there. Come on,
- 6:19Speaker 4: I can't.
- 6:21Speaker 6: What do y'all think about this concept, the audio drama concept,
- 6:24Speaker 6: because I keep going back and forth and I'm I'll
- 6:26Speaker 6: listen to it when it comes out.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I'm excited that it's something different and new, but I
- 6:30Speaker 3: don't know what to make of this.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean they've done it for like Batman and yeah,
- 6:36Speaker 4: and it's fine. It's it's a kick back to the
- 6:39Speaker 4: old nineteen twenties radio plays.
- 6:41Speaker 7: Yeah, I'll listen to it, just be I listened to
- 6:43Speaker 7: a lot of podcasts. I drive a semi for a living,
- 6:45Speaker 7: so ill I'll listen to it. And you know, lately
- 6:48Speaker 7: I've been I have been listening to a lot of
- 6:50Speaker 7: Star Trek podcasts. I meant to say audiobooks. Yeah, and
- 6:55Speaker 7: I you know, I just got done listening to a
- 6:59Speaker 7: Batman Canadi nine Batman sequel audiobook. I'm listening to some
- 7:02Speaker 7: Star Trek the card audiobooks that are pretty good. There's
- 7:07Speaker 7: another they've already come out with, sort of this kind
- 7:10Speaker 7: of a concept thing with seven of nine and Raffi.
- 7:14Speaker 7: It's different than an audio book where there's actually sound
- 7:17Speaker 7: effects and the different the different actors are playing their part.
- 7:21Speaker 7: So you've got Jerry Ryan and whoever played Raffi. Dan,
- 7:28Speaker 7: you're a big fan of Raffi.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Who plays Raffi? Yes, okay, no, that's his name, Raffi, Yeah,
- 7:39Speaker 2: ra Rafi Ella so, but the reason I haven't I
- 7:44Speaker 2: haven't purchased that one yet because most of the audiobooks
- 7:47Speaker 2: are like around fifteen dollars, but you get like ten
- 7:49Speaker 2: hours of entertainment.
- 7:52Speaker 7: This is only like an hour and forty five minutes
- 7:55Speaker 7: for the same price.
- 7:56Speaker 2: So it is it interesting?
- 7:59Speaker 7: So we'll see it's has to offer how much it's
- 8:01Speaker 7: going to be.
- 8:02Speaker 2: And I don't know. I feel like it's an hour
- 8:04Speaker 2: and forty five minutes. Because they they wrote it to
- 8:07Speaker 2: do a TV show. I can't and when it didn't
- 8:10Speaker 2: and when it didn't happen, they're like, ah, we'll just
- 8:12Speaker 2: do it without the cameras.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Yeah. I can't wait for the ads where con starts
- 8:17Speaker 4: reading about like blue Chew and yeah, that's what I'm
- 8:24Speaker 4: exciting about.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, Turbo tax.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Yeah exactly. So we have no idea when this is
- 8:32Speaker 4: coming out. So at some point this year, you know
- 8:35Speaker 4: what bothers me though, what's that the picture?
- 8:39Speaker 3: What about it that they paid to show?
- 8:42Speaker 2: No, it's that it's a it's an audio it's a
- 8:45Speaker 2: it's an audio drama, all right, and they and so
- 8:48Speaker 2: if they're going to show a picture of him either
- 8:51Speaker 2: from his time in the show, lost, or a picture
- 8:54Speaker 2: of him standing on the sidewalk drinking a latte or
- 8:58Speaker 2: something fine, but to kind of make it, like put
- 9:02Speaker 2: him in a costume and make him look like he
- 9:05Speaker 2: might look and it's people are the average person is stupid.
- 9:09Speaker 2: They're gonna see the article and think there's con.
- 9:15Speaker 7: That's what I thought when I saw the picture.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yep. They do this a lot with with comic books,
- 9:21Speaker 2: these these clickbait articles. Something big happens in the comic book,
- 9:26Speaker 2: and they'll do it. They'll do a headline and it
- 9:29Speaker 2: and they'll do a picture of like the MCU version
- 9:33Speaker 2: of that character. And now you get all these people
- 9:35Speaker 2: talking about this event that's gonna happen in the MCU
- 9:38Speaker 2: and no it's not. They're talking about a comic book.
- 9:40Speaker 2: But you don't read the article. You look at the
- 9:42Speaker 2: picture and read the headlines. And I feel like they
- 9:44Speaker 2: know that and they purposely do that.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Well, speaking of picture, our last news story comes to
- 9:51Speaker 4: us from Independent dot co dot UK and William Shatner
- 9:56Speaker 4: was responding to a fan on Twitter. Fan asked him
- 9:59Speaker 4: how could you let them kill off Currican generations? And
- 10:03Speaker 4: Grandpa replied with the gift. The gift was amazing. So
- 10:09Speaker 4: this was the gift Grandpa.
- 10:16Speaker 2: That's great.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I didn't see that. That's fantastic.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Yeah, so you know he's in de nigetyes. He doesn't
- 10:22Speaker 4: care anymore. He's gonna tell you yea.
- 10:24Speaker 5: Real Harrison Ford about Star Wars hours there right, just.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Oh yeah yeah yeah. So but that's all the news stories.
- 10:35Speaker 2: What's up with the Mount?
- 10:37Speaker 4: I mean it's still for sale. Yeah, the deal has
- 10:40Speaker 4: not been finalized. Okay, you know we got time, all right,
- 10:44Speaker 4: all right to our page. I know we'll buy Paramount together,
- 10:49Speaker 4: couple together.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Actually maybe maybe if the three podcasts joined forces, Yeah,
- 10:54Speaker 2: maybe we could purchase Paramount. I know, I know we
- 10:56Speaker 2: don't have the fun. We have enough to do it.
- 11:00Speaker 2: But if you guys want to want to chip in, may.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Can scraunge up like seventeen bucks and.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Maybe we can make this happen, getting.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Closer and closer to the to the to the number
- 11:08Speaker 3: they're going to need exactly.
- 11:12Speaker 5: The problem is the problem is I'm in Canada, so
- 11:15Speaker 5: it's Canadian money, which might as well just be monopoly money,
- 11:18Speaker 5: so which I can actually like contribute to that, you know,
- 11:22Speaker 5: but that's where they shoot everything now.
- 11:23Speaker 4: So that might not true.
- 11:26Speaker 5: That's true. There's goods express of Canadian TV recently.
- 11:30Speaker 2: What's What's that?
- 11:31Speaker 5: There was some talk of the podcast about Canadian TV recently.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and how much I love it. I like
- 11:37Speaker 2: Canadian It's my one of my favorite varieties of TV.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, well let's uh, let's get to our
- 11:47Speaker 4: main topic of Star Trek. Our things are going, So
- 11:52Speaker 4: here we go fun will.
- 11:54Speaker 7: Now comment, yes, talking may now comments.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Essentially yes. Yeah. So, uh, basically the spurt from the
- 12:08Speaker 4: idea of you know, we had three Star Trek series
- 12:12Speaker 4: end last year, we had Prodigy, we had Discovery, and
- 12:17Speaker 4: we had lower decks all come to an end, and
- 12:21Speaker 4: we just wanted to see what was going on where
- 12:24Speaker 4: fans we're at with Star Trek. You know, we do
- 12:27Speaker 4: have the promise of Star Trek Academy or starfing Lead
- 12:31Speaker 4: Academy coming around the corner. But you know, you go
- 12:34Speaker 4: down to any Star Trek posting, any official posting, everyone's like,
- 12:38Speaker 4: where's Legacy? Yeah, so it's it's kind of like, where
- 12:43Speaker 4: where are we at?
- 12:44Speaker 2: Right?
- 12:45Speaker 4: So I guess we lost Scott.
- 12:49Speaker 2: But that's all right. I like these guys better got it's.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Gotta be back. It's kind of back anyways. Uh so, yeah,
- 12:59Speaker 4: so I kind of wanted to give, you know, talk
- 13:01Speaker 4: about that. I also wanted to kind of kind of
- 13:03Speaker 4: give you an idea of where we're at compared to
- 13:05Speaker 4: where we were when we first started with Star Trek, so,
- 13:09Speaker 4: you know, because because the numbers are are kind of
- 13:11Speaker 4: there that overall things are better. So first off, I
- 13:17Speaker 4: kind of wanted to show this when when Star Trek
- 13:20Speaker 4: first came back in twenty what sixteen seventeen something like that. Yeah,
- 13:25Speaker 4: twenty seventeen, I think, yeah, we had we had CBS
- 13:28Speaker 4: All Access was the big streaming service, right that was,
- 13:33Speaker 4: Oh they're they're scott okay bringing it back in the okay.
- 13:39Speaker 4: So yeah, CBS all Access right before they folded and
- 13:41Speaker 4: turned into Paramount Plus, they were they were tipping at
- 13:45Speaker 4: about thirty million subscribers, right, that's about and when they
- 13:50Speaker 4: first started, they first started around nineteen million subscribers and
- 13:54Speaker 4: then so that they increased by about eleven million over
- 13:58Speaker 4: its run as CBA All Access. Then from there Paramount
- 14:04Speaker 4: took over and for about a year it was about
- 14:08Speaker 4: right in the thirties and then the up until it
- 14:12Speaker 4: combined with Showtime, they tip the scales at about thirty
- 14:15Speaker 4: six million subscribers to give you an idea. Currently Netflix
- 14:21Speaker 4: has over three hundred million subscribers, so it's just it's
- 14:25Speaker 4: a fraction of what could be the potential. But that's
- 14:29Speaker 4: where we're at.
- 14:30Speaker 2: But who has who has more Canadian produced television? Because
- 14:34Speaker 2: that's true, is really what I gravitate to, and that's right,
- 14:38Speaker 2: that's right.
- 14:41Speaker 6: Do you all subscribe to Paramount Plus currently?
- 14:45Speaker 4: I mean do you as a show? Yeah?
- 14:51Speaker 6: I mean one reason why I ask is because it's like,
- 14:54Speaker 6: if you do, why do you I still have a
- 14:56Speaker 6: subscription and it's nominally for.
- 14:59Speaker 3: The Star Trek.
- 15:00Speaker 4: I guess, yeah.
- 15:02Speaker 6: Maybe, but I every day I start thinking to myself,
- 15:05Speaker 6: I mean, you know, you can watch yeah, number of
- 15:07Speaker 6: different ways, and especially when new shows aren't on.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Got the old stuff saved to my computer, so I
- 15:12Speaker 3: don't know that.
- 15:13Speaker 4: That's kind of my Yeah, that's my theory why they
- 15:15Speaker 4: haven't announced when Strange New Worlds is starting back out
- 15:18Speaker 4: because they just want you to hold onto it.
- 15:21Speaker 3: You never digital edg edging of some sort.
- 15:23Speaker 7: Of well, I wonder if people how many people are
- 15:25Speaker 7: like pausing their subscription and then coming back and you know,
- 15:28Speaker 7: I'd be curious to see what the numbers are, you know,
- 15:31Speaker 7: the month that Strange New World debuts.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Yeah, I was looking for stuff like that, and I
- 15:35Speaker 4: could not find that specific of numbers. I was able
- 15:39Speaker 4: to find this, which was a quarterly breakdown of subscribers
- 15:43Speaker 4: from from the beginning of start of Paramount Plus to
- 15:47Speaker 4: currents our current third quarter numbers, so as you can see,
- 15:53Speaker 4: like they started out low in the sixteens. Now we're
- 15:55Speaker 4: up into seventy one million, seventy two million. But one
- 15:59Speaker 4: of the big things that I found because none of
- 16:02Speaker 4: these coincide with you know, like the Card season three debuted,
- 16:06Speaker 4: or or Strange New World season one or two, like,
- 16:09Speaker 4: none of that correlates with any of these jumps. The
- 16:13Speaker 4: biggest correlation I found was when start, when a Paramount
- 16:17Speaker 4: Plus sign an exclusive deal with Walmart to offer their
- 16:22Speaker 4: streaming service with the Walmart Plus service or.
- 16:27Speaker 6: People just got to by default yeah yeah, like Amazon Prime.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Yeah yeah. So if you get the Walmart Plus. I
- 16:35Speaker 4: don't know if you guys have that in Canada.
- 16:36Speaker 9: Matt, but if we do, I don't subscribe, so okay, yeah,
- 16:41Speaker 9: so it's like, yeah, they they just give you like
- 16:44Speaker 9: what like you can go get your groceries at any level, or.
- 16:49Speaker 2: It's it's you get free shipping and stuff too, and
- 16:52Speaker 2: like it's it's Amazon Prime, it's Walmart Prime. Yeahs Walmart Prime.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Terrifying. It's like a transformer.
- 17:02Speaker 2: But I'm pretty sure, yeah right, I'm pretty sure. My
- 17:05Speaker 2: wife has this, which which means technically I have two
- 17:09Speaker 2: Paramount plus subscriptions.
- 17:11Speaker 10: There you go if you are all in, yeah yeah, yeah,
- 17:16Speaker 10: but they give you the ads supported tier, whereas we
- 17:19Speaker 10: don't have.
- 17:19Speaker 4: That, so oh okay, yeah.
- 17:22Speaker 6: But still get you can still get ads if you
- 17:25Speaker 6: pay for the It's terrible, the most horrific anyway.
- 17:31Speaker 4: The thing that infuriates me more is when you hit
- 17:33Speaker 4: the skip intro and it still plays the intro. Yeah yeah,
- 17:37Speaker 4: I I.
- 17:38Speaker 6: What really business me off is when you're getting an
- 17:39Speaker 6: AD for the thing you are watching.
- 17:41Speaker 3: You're trying to watch the.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Thing, and they're showing you a watching.
- 17:44Speaker 3: It can't be that complicated to to sort that out.
- 17:48Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I'll watch it again, I promise.
- 17:53Speaker 3: If you let me watch it. Now, watch your more frustrating.
- 17:57Speaker 7: We've got Netflix, and we went to watch a movie
- 17:59Speaker 7: on NETFLI, and we've got the ad supported version on Netflix.
- 18:02Speaker 7: I checked out three different movies last night. Couldn't watch
- 18:06Speaker 7: them because I do the ad supported Netflix. I had
- 18:08Speaker 7: to rent them from Prime. Rent one from Prime.
- 18:11Speaker 4: That's crazy, you know.
- 18:12Speaker 2: That bothers me a little bit. It's it's like, all right,
- 18:15Speaker 2: if it's not available on my tier, take it off
- 18:17Speaker 2: my menu. I agree. Yeah, don't tea, don't tease me
- 18:20Speaker 2: with it.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Yeah again with the digital edging.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, but you know so, really it hasn't been
- 18:29Speaker 4: that Star Trek has boosted them. It's this Walmart thing
- 18:32Speaker 4: and it makes sense, right, like pretty much everyone goes
- 18:35Speaker 4: to Walmart. And then I found this via flix Portal Patrol,
- 18:41Speaker 4: just the number streaming services around the world and how
- 18:44Speaker 4: many subscribers they have and paramount pluses down there there
- 18:48Speaker 4: they're number seven. Netflix is number one at over three
- 18:51Speaker 4: hundred million. Prime has got two hundred million, but paramounts
- 18:56Speaker 4: right around seventy two million.
- 18:58Speaker 7: What's hot Star?
- 18:59Speaker 2: Yeah? What is it?
- 19:00Speaker 4: I've never heard a hot Star. I looked up.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Uh, that's like a like a like an X like
- 19:06Speaker 2: an X Men character.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I thought I thought it was interesting that
- 19:11Speaker 4: Hulu was on there that character. Yeah, Hulu, though just
- 19:19Speaker 4: as like people who only subscribe to Hulu by itself, which.
- 19:22Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, which imagine will go away at some point, right,
- 19:25Speaker 6: isn't that the I would think Disney's already combined the
- 19:28Speaker 6: whole Hulu library in there, so one presumes they're going
- 19:30Speaker 6: to stop supporting that kind of extra at some point.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Yeah, what is tencent video? What is that?
- 19:36Speaker 4: That's Chinese?
- 19:38Speaker 3: I believe that that's right.
- 19:42Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, so so yeah, so Paramount's got got a
- 19:48Speaker 4: lot of a lot of ground to make up, so
- 19:50Speaker 4: it's it's playing with the big boys. But that that's
- 19:54Speaker 4: where we're at with subscribers.
- 19:56Speaker 3: So I'm curious.
- 19:59Speaker 6: About the profit profit right, because you could have low subscribers,
- 20:02Speaker 6: about high profitbil profitability if depending on what your library is.
- 20:06Speaker 8: You know.
- 20:06Speaker 6: I guess that was the the impetus for all these
- 20:09Speaker 6: IP owners. They were like, we should have our own
- 20:10Speaker 6: streaming thing because we got this whole library, and it's
- 20:13Speaker 6: a big battle over whether you want to watch Star
- 20:15Speaker 6: Trek and Andy Griffith or whatever's on HBO Max or whatever.
- 20:19Speaker 3: They're called Max. Yeah, Max, call it Max.
- 20:21Speaker 6: It drives me nuts, but you know, you know, so, uh,
- 20:25Speaker 6: I'm curious about about that because it does cost money
- 20:28Speaker 6: to run those servers, right, it.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Does, it does. It's it's more people think. Yeah, But
- 20:35Speaker 4: as far as profitability, I don't have those numbers. I
- 20:38Speaker 4: went looking for them. The thing is you can hard
- 20:40Speaker 4: to find, I think. Yeah, they don't like to say
- 20:43Speaker 4: that too much, especially.
- 20:45Speaker 3: They were running our company into the ground.
- 20:48Speaker 4: Yeah, Paramount was running into the ground for quite a bit.
- 20:50Speaker 4: And I know that their movies have been doing well,
- 20:53Speaker 4: and that's kind of what's been propping them up. Things
- 20:56Speaker 4: like the Uh, the Top Gun reboot and a few
- 20:59Speaker 4: of there are other films have really helped them. But
- 21:04Speaker 4: you know, they're also for sale, and that family, the
- 21:07Speaker 4: Redstones want to get out. Who knows what I'll mean
- 21:09Speaker 4: for the future, will they will they start fresh again
- 21:12Speaker 4: with everything? We don't know?
- 21:15Speaker 7: You know, well, who doesn't want to buy a Section
- 21:17Speaker 7: thirty one.
- 21:18Speaker 5: So somewhere in that bardroom at Paramount, they're pitching Section
- 21:26Speaker 5: thirty one two to Tom Cruise and doing a mission
- 21:28Speaker 5: impossible crossover.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Section thirty two will be Yeah.
- 21:33Speaker 4: I'm hoping for the Section thirty one Paw Patrol crossover.
- 21:37Speaker 4: That's what I want. Yeah, And then we've got our survey,
- 21:43Speaker 4: so I guess I'll ask you, guys, what do you
- 21:47Speaker 4: think of the current status startric? We ask people is
- 21:50Speaker 4: it great? Exciting? Okay, could be better? Or the new
- 21:54Speaker 4: stuff just isn't for me? Where do you guys sit
- 21:57Speaker 4: on it?
- 22:00Speaker 7: I think Raw Rathi, Ela Musica and Michael Burnham are
- 22:05Speaker 7: gonna lead Star Trek into the next millennium.
- 22:08Speaker 2: I think, so the next one or this one, because
- 22:12Speaker 2: I can't wait. I can't wait for the next one.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Yeah, we got a ways to go for the next one. Yeah,
- 22:17Speaker 3: I think they might take us backwards.
- 22:21Speaker 5: In a lot of ways. For me, the current state
- 22:23Speaker 5: is pretty much just a microcosm of kind of where
- 22:27Speaker 5: the wider industry at is in person like eh, like
- 22:31Speaker 5: you know, like like some of it I enjoy, you know,
- 22:35Speaker 5: but not to the same degree as like other things,
- 22:37Speaker 5: and like some of it's like not for me, and
- 22:40Speaker 5: like that's okay, right, But there's just not to get
- 22:46Speaker 5: too like esoteric about it or whatever. But just the
- 22:49Speaker 5: way they write TV now in general, it's not how
- 22:54Speaker 5: I engage with media or really like it. It's a
- 22:57Speaker 5: lot of like and then this happens, and then this happens,
- 22:59Speaker 5: like this was like Discovery, right or it was so
- 23:01Speaker 5: plot heavy and it's like things just happen, as opposed
- 23:05Speaker 5: to because Michael Burnham does this, this happens, and it's
- 23:10Speaker 5: less based in character and more based in plot. And
- 23:14Speaker 5: I think that's why Strange New World is kind of
- 23:16Speaker 5: the shining gem for me of like the contemporary era,
- 23:19Speaker 5: because it is more of that episodic Yes, you can
- 23:22Speaker 5: have that kind of plot, but it almost does do
- 23:25Speaker 5: the DS nine thing a little bit where you have
- 23:26Speaker 5: those windows in the character, which is you know, whether
- 23:29Speaker 5: it's the TG thing or the voyage like a little
- 23:31Speaker 5: bit more of that classic Star trek. But yeah, I'll
- 23:36Speaker 5: I'll fess up. I still haven't seen the final season
- 23:38Speaker 5: of Discovery, not because I don't like Discovery. It's not
- 23:41Speaker 5: my favorite, but I didn't care enough to seek it
- 23:45Speaker 5: out and when because there's just so much out there
- 23:49Speaker 5: and it's like blocked out right and it's and it's
- 23:54Speaker 5: no like statement of like you know, quality or like
- 23:56Speaker 5: who leads it or like whatever. It's just if you're
- 24:00Speaker 5: not making me care. Is that an issue? Is there
- 24:03Speaker 5: a new audience that's finding it? Like I don't know? Right?
- 24:07Speaker 6: So, and I mean I share a lot of those
- 24:10Speaker 6: same thoughts I further survey, I actually put great and exciting,
- 24:15Speaker 6: but with there's an asterisk there, the caveat there is.
- 24:18Speaker 6: I think it's great and exciting in the sense that
- 24:20Speaker 6: they're producing a lot, they're trying different things. And on
- 24:24Speaker 6: our podcast when we discussed section thirty one, we had
- 24:26Speaker 6: a lot of fun talking about it is a big mess.
- 24:30Speaker 6: But I was also like, hey, look, it didn't work out,
- 24:33Speaker 6: but they tried something. And with Lower Decks and Prodigy
- 24:39Speaker 6: and as well as discovering Strange New Worlds and the
- 24:41Speaker 6: Short Treks, they tried a lot of things.
- 24:44Speaker 3: What concerns me is.
- 24:45Speaker 6: They've tried a lot of things, but it kind of
- 24:48Speaker 6: seems like maybe they're pulling back from that now no
- 24:50Speaker 6: more Short Treks.
- 24:52Speaker 3: As you mentioned at the top of the show, they've canceled.
- 24:53Speaker 6: A lot of these shows that people really like, and
- 24:56Speaker 6: we don't even know when Strange New Worlds is coming back.
- 24:58Speaker 6: We know it is, but we're sort of left dangling.
- 25:01Speaker 6: So that's not that's not so wonderful.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, And and I do see that they are
- 25:07Speaker 4: expanding with other franchises, like they've created like three or
- 25:10Speaker 4: four different Dexter shows and Yellowstone.
- 25:17Speaker 2: That's the spin.
- 25:18Speaker 6: Offs franchise business model, which can be frustrating when it's
- 25:23Speaker 6: not handled well, and right frankly it usually it usually
- 25:27Speaker 6: isn't in my view.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Yeah, well, you're putting all your eggs in one basket. Yeah,
- 25:31Speaker 4: so that's that's the problem with that.
- 25:33Speaker 2: So far.
- 25:33Speaker 7: I'm digging everything that Taylor Sheridan's coming out with Landman
- 25:38Speaker 7: and Tulsa King.
- 25:41Speaker 5: Well, and I'm wondering too if that's you know, kind
- 25:43Speaker 5: of circling back. That's that's the difference, right, because again,
- 25:46Speaker 5: so much of like the industry out is that IP
- 25:49Speaker 5: driven and milking it for what it's worth. But with
- 25:52Speaker 5: you know, Yellowstone or any of like Sheridan's other shows,
- 25:54Speaker 5: you kind of have that singular authoreo viewpoint because it
- 25:58Speaker 5: is very much like Taylor Sheridan joint as opposed to
- 26:02Speaker 5: now Star Trek. Yeah, I know, you have you know,
- 26:05Speaker 5: Kurtsman ostensibly like you know, shepherding everything, but because they
- 26:10Speaker 5: are trying so many things, and like again, it's just
- 26:12Speaker 5: different approaches. There isn't that same kind of singular, coherent
- 26:17Speaker 5: sort of lens. It's a hey, do you want to
- 26:19Speaker 5: do a Star Trek show? What's your idea, And sometimes
- 26:22Speaker 5: you get a lower decks and sometimes you have a
- 26:26Speaker 5: section thirty one pilot that gets repurposed into a TV
- 26:28Speaker 5: movie like yeah, well, I mean.
- 26:31Speaker 6: Also, you know, different time frames and stuff too, as
- 26:33Speaker 6: opposed to in the nineties when we had TGDs nine
- 26:36Speaker 6: and then Voyager with the overlap and kind of seeing
- 26:39Speaker 6: the same timeframe but from different angles. That was a
- 26:42Speaker 6: different thing than we're getting, largely than what we're getting today.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:47Speaker 4: Yeah, And then if you watch any of the new shows,
- 26:49Speaker 4: like just count how many producers are credited. It's like
- 26:54Speaker 4: fifteen to twenty for each episode.
- 26:56Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 26:57Speaker 4: So that's a lot of people who want to put
- 26:58Speaker 4: their stamp on it, so then it muddles it as
- 27:01Speaker 4: opposed to a singular vision.
- 27:03Speaker 2: So let me ask let me ask you guys something.
- 27:06Speaker 2: This is something we've talked about a couple times over
- 27:09Speaker 2: the years, something that I've harped on over the years,
- 27:13Speaker 2: and Matt, you touched on it. That TV is just
- 27:16Speaker 2: made differently now than it was ten, twenty thirty years ago.
- 27:22Speaker 2: And I'm curious, I'm curious your opinion, both of you,
- 27:28Speaker 2: your opinion on the Orville, because I really enjoyed that
- 27:34Speaker 2: show and watching that show while watching Discovery at the
- 27:42Speaker 2: same time. When we were reviewing new episodes that you know,
- 27:47Speaker 2: we would review two episodes, we would talk about Discovery,
- 27:49Speaker 2: and then at the end of the discussion we'd shift
- 27:53Speaker 2: and talk about the Orville for twenty minutes. Even though
- 27:56Speaker 2: this wasn't really an Orville show, and it's not really
- 27:58Speaker 2: a Star Trek show, but it is a Star Trek show.
- 28:00Speaker 2: And the thing is, they use the old formula. They
- 28:03Speaker 2: they were shooting television today as if it was thirty
- 28:07Speaker 2: years ago, and I felt like it was working and
- 28:09Speaker 2: it was working well and I and I just wish
- 28:12Speaker 2: more people in power noticed that. So I don't I
- 28:16Speaker 2: just want to get your your thoughts on that, either
- 28:22Speaker 2: of you. Both of you. Yeah, no fair.
- 28:25Speaker 5: I was just like, well, being so polite.
- 28:27Speaker 2: I was.
- 28:28Speaker 3: I was just like, yeah, no, I totally agree with you.
- 28:30Speaker 5: Yeah, go ahead, Matt, Yeah, no thanks. It's like I'm
- 28:36Speaker 5: up two minds of it, because it is it in
- 28:40Speaker 5: Star Trek two, where like Scotty's like complaining about like
- 28:44Speaker 5: you know, the young Whippersnappers and whatever, and you know,
- 28:47Speaker 5: all the changes they made to the enterprise or maybe
- 28:49Speaker 5: and it's like, no, no, no, I know what it is.
- 28:51Speaker 5: It's Star Trek three. It's when the first of the
- 28:53Speaker 5: Excelsior for the first time was like, well that bucket
- 28:56Speaker 5: of bolts and blah blah blah blah. It's like new minds,
- 28:58Speaker 5: new ideas, blah blah blah blah. Right, eight and I
- 29:03Speaker 5: both believe that it's like, yes, let's things change, and
- 29:05Speaker 5: that's okay, But like it's also okay if you have
- 29:09Speaker 5: your niche to like do something that is like that throwback,
- 29:13Speaker 5: Like I do think there is room for both. What
- 29:18Speaker 5: did grind my gears about the Orville a little bit?
- 29:20Speaker 5: Wasn't the Orville itself. I don't know if you folks
- 29:23Speaker 5: know this, but the Internet is kind of toxic and
- 29:26Speaker 5: annoying and like the.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Discplace, I had not heard that.
- 29:32Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, so it's like Orville being used as a
- 29:35Speaker 5: cudgel to beat down starts are kind of annoying me.
- 29:38Speaker 5: But also I get it because it's different, right, And
- 29:41Speaker 5: like I mean, pretty soon we're going to be the
- 29:43Speaker 5: target audience audience of CBS and we're going to get
- 29:46Speaker 5: you know, our version of like the Matt Luck reboot.
- 29:47Speaker 5: We're gonna love it so.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Starfleet n C. I s yeah, exactly.
- 29:52Speaker 4: I'm shocked we didn't get that.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Well, give it time, I mean, that's true. Yeah, that's
- 29:58Speaker 3: probably next up. Yeah.
- 30:01Speaker 6: So I also really love the Oriville, and I really
- 30:04Speaker 6: enjoyed the fact that Seth MacFarlane set out to basically
- 30:08Speaker 6: film it as if it was TNG. And that's not
- 30:11Speaker 6: just in the storytelling style and the writing, but in
- 30:15Speaker 6: the production design, in locking down the cameras more just
- 30:19Speaker 6: pretending like they're using big nineteen eighties cameras in a
- 30:21Speaker 6: lot of the scenes. And because I really enjoyed Discovery,
- 30:25Speaker 6: it's it is often a hot mess. And by the way,
- 30:28Speaker 6: I think season five of Discovery is where they finally
- 30:31Speaker 6: got everything sort of working. I at the same time,
- 30:35Speaker 6: I wasn't super excited about it. If I weren't doing
- 30:37Speaker 6: a podcast, I might not have been as quick to
- 30:40Speaker 6: watch it. I was happy that I did. But the
- 30:43Speaker 6: thing is is and Strange New Worlds is guilty of
- 30:46Speaker 6: this too, guilty you know, well, I'm coloring, You're gonna
- 30:49Speaker 6: see what I'm saying here. But the freneticism, the crazy
- 30:54Speaker 6: action oriented production design, I've got nothing against it when
- 30:57Speaker 6: it's appropriate I love it, It's just I don't need
- 31:00Speaker 6: that like all the time. And for my money, I
- 31:04Speaker 6: think my favorite Star Trek of the current era is
- 31:08Speaker 6: lower decks, and partly because they did do a modern
- 31:13Speaker 6: twist on old school Star Trek largely episodic. They the
- 31:18Speaker 6: way it was shot in film. The production design, even
- 31:21Speaker 6: though it was animated, was going for that kind of vibe,
- 31:25Speaker 6: but with a modern flare, and of course shorter episodes
- 31:29Speaker 6: they're cramming a lot in so it is definitely more
- 31:31Speaker 6: high energy. But I am a big supporter of looking
- 31:35Speaker 6: back to some of those older shows and taking you
- 31:38Speaker 6: don't have to copy them. And it's hard to recapture
- 31:41Speaker 6: that era, right because we don't live in that era.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 31:44Speaker 6: All media is a product of its time, but that
- 31:46Speaker 6: doesn't mean it can't be influenced by it. And as
- 31:50Speaker 6: I mentioned, you know, we watched Tos and Voyager all
- 31:53Speaker 6: that stuff for our podcast and it's really great. I mean,
- 31:56Speaker 6: I love TOS, but sometimes you're watching you're like, I
- 31:59Speaker 6: can't belie how good the writing is, right, Like, despite
- 32:03Speaker 6: all the challenges they had, this story is just it
- 32:06Speaker 6: fits together so well and.
- 32:08Speaker 2: It goes the other way too, though it goes the
- 32:10Speaker 2: other way too, well, sure with cos uh, Scott's doing
- 32:14Speaker 2: a rewatch and I am for the person.
- 32:17Speaker 7: No, I'm not doing a rewatch. I'm doing a watch.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Well.
- 32:23Speaker 4: It's tough.
- 32:23Speaker 3: It's tough sometimes, oh yeah, And so I know some
- 32:25Speaker 3: of them are very tough.
- 32:26Speaker 6: Absolutely, And that's you know, that's where we now have
- 32:29Speaker 6: modern production design and better sensibilities about certain things.
- 32:32Speaker 7: And I'll never get used to a woman on the bridge.
- 32:35Speaker 6: Yeah, well, that's that's sort of that sort of thing
- 32:37Speaker 6: that drops up. It's very interesting to sort of gauge
- 32:40Speaker 6: the spectrum of progressives and what was considered progressive in
- 32:44Speaker 6: in the nineteen sixties.
- 32:45Speaker 2: For sure.
- 32:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I I think that that where we're at with
- 32:52Speaker 4: things right now. I think it feels like we're at
- 32:55Speaker 4: a reset, like they're trying to figure out their way. Yeah,
- 32:58Speaker 4: you know, I think things like Legacy really took them
- 33:02Speaker 4: by surprise more so than they thought, and and they
- 33:06Speaker 4: don't know what to do with that at this point.
- 33:10Speaker 4: I know that Jerry Ryan has mentioned that she was
- 33:14Speaker 4: pitched a seven of nine series even after all the
- 33:17Speaker 4: Legacy stuff, and she was like, no, we got to
- 33:20Speaker 4: do Legacy. That's what we that's the promise. So I
- 33:24Speaker 4: don't know why they're fighting that one as much.
- 33:26Speaker 7: None of us get it. We've talked about it before.
- 33:28Speaker 7: That's what everybody wants. That's what's gonna make them the
- 33:31Speaker 7: most money and get them the most eyeballs on the TVs.
- 33:34Speaker 4: But yeah, I am curious to see what they do
- 33:39Speaker 4: with with with Academy.
- 33:42Speaker 6: You know, yeah, a great because that's something that they've
- 33:45Speaker 6: been pushing around since before Star Trek six, you know, yeah,
- 33:50Speaker 6: back in the day he starts. He wanted Star Trek
- 33:52Speaker 6: six to be that starts flight Academy movie with just
- 33:55Speaker 6: the bookends of Shatner and Nimoy and and they were like, well.
- 33:59Speaker 4: Wonder if taking any of those old ideas repurpose then
- 34:02Speaker 4: you know.
- 34:02Speaker 3: Shoot them a thousand years in the future.
- 34:04Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, just change them up a little bit. Yeah,
- 34:06Speaker 4: I don't I don't know.
- 34:08Speaker 6: That's that's It's another odd bird of a show because again,
- 34:10Speaker 6: on the one hand is like, okay, I don't know,
- 34:12Speaker 6: you know, I like the characters involved, I don't know
- 34:14Speaker 6: how excited are and but then on the other end,
- 34:16Speaker 6: they're hiring like Paul Giamani and these brilliant actors and
- 34:21Speaker 6: so that's how they keep getting you. They keep they
- 34:24Speaker 6: keep enticing you and saying like, Okay, well I'm at
- 34:26Speaker 6: least going to take a take a look at this thing.
- 34:29Speaker 5: Yeah, and then the negative part of my brains like, oh,
- 34:32Speaker 5: that's such a sad like statement of where the entertainment
- 34:34Speaker 5: industry is now, Like Holly Hunter has to do Starfleet
- 34:37Speaker 5: Academy has to play a kooky alien engineer on Strange
- 34:44Speaker 5: New Worlds on a show, right, Ca.
- 34:47Speaker 4: It's like, yeah, I appreciate it.
- 34:50Speaker 5: For David Cronenberg's on Discovery, like what are you doing?
- 34:53Speaker 6: Which still blows my mind and I and I loved
- 34:55Speaker 6: him on it every moment. It's so amazing of all people, David, David,
- 35:02Speaker 6: what did you think of the review?
- 35:03Speaker 4: You haven't seen it?
- 35:04Speaker 5: Never mind, I know, yeah that's Daniels. Yeah yeah yeah,
- 35:10Speaker 5: member marys for me in concept. But we'll see how
- 35:12Speaker 5: the execution.
- 35:13Speaker 6: I was like when they referenced Enterprise, I liked that
- 35:15Speaker 6: they were doing it more. Yeah, especially at lower decks.
- 35:18Speaker 6: I'm an Enterprise supporter from.
- 35:21Speaker 10: It's a lot better than people remember, especially when you
- 35:24Speaker 10: watch it again because it does have that flavor. It's
- 35:27Speaker 10: like that it's the pinnacle of all that, particularly like
- 35:30Speaker 10: the production design. It's still styrofoam rocks, but it's the
- 35:33Speaker 10: best HD styrofoam rocks from that period of Star Trek.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Right, They all the all the people, they figured out.
- 35:39Speaker 6: How to do it, and then there was the break
- 35:40Speaker 6: and had to do a total reset because all those
- 35:42Speaker 6: people are all dead.
- 35:44Speaker 4: All of them. They did the whole episode that somebody
- 35:46Speaker 4: got stabbed in the leg. Yeah, yeah, no, no, no.
- 35:53Speaker 5: Say Patrick, to your point about you know, TV being
- 35:57Speaker 5: of its time and kind of like time travel and
- 35:59Speaker 5: things like that, if you ever knowalgic for the Bush era,
- 36:01Speaker 5: just put on Enterprise.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 36:04Speaker 6: We talk about that a lot on our on our
- 36:05Speaker 6: show about when we're doing Enterprise, is that there's that
- 36:08Speaker 6: there's that interesting sort of cultural framing about what's going
- 36:12Speaker 6: on at the time, particularly season three.
- 36:14Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, So we did the survey. We had
- 36:17Speaker 4: people went over. We had three hundred and sixty respondents,
- 36:20Speaker 4: which great, wow. Yeah, And so we asked people with
- 36:24Speaker 4: the currentcydents startoric, great and exciting, okay could be better?
- 36:28Speaker 4: New stuff isn't for me? Over half fifty one percent
- 36:31Speaker 4: said okay, could be better, which kind of feels about right.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that's track.
- 36:38Speaker 4: Yeah, there was you know a little a little bit
- 36:41Speaker 4: more than third of saying that, you know, the new
- 36:43Speaker 4: stuff was exciting and they loved it, and you know,
- 36:47Speaker 4: about eleven twelve percent is just not for them.
- 36:52Speaker 6: The counterfactual, the counterfactual I wish we could investigate, is
- 36:55Speaker 6: if you ask this exact question in nineteen ninety five. Yeah,
- 36:59Speaker 6: I think think we'd get the exact same man. Maybe, yeah,
- 37:04Speaker 6: because I because I was there. Yeah, I remember the
- 37:08Speaker 6: us NEET forums and fighter and not all that.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Yeah, but the yellow but the yellow people are the
- 37:12Speaker 2: yellow people from nineteen ninety five are dead now.
- 37:14Speaker 3: So yeah, that's true, mostly by their own hand.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Yeah, so sorry.
- 37:25Speaker 4: So then we ask people what's your favorite news star,
- 37:27Speaker 4: trek show or TV movie? There's the one TV movie overall,
- 37:34Speaker 4: forty three percent said Lower Decks. Really yeah, lower Decks
- 37:38Speaker 4: got the got the highest just behind that was Strange
- 37:41Speaker 4: New Worlds. Sure, okay, the lowest one was Prodigy. Only
- 37:47Speaker 4: twelve people voted for Prodigy.
- 37:49Speaker 7: That's because only twelve people saw it.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Yeah. I don't think short tricks got any votes at all.
- 37:56Speaker 2: They didn't.
- 37:56Speaker 3: I love short tracks, all of them. Yeah, I don't
- 38:00Speaker 3: like all of them. But I love the format that
- 38:03Speaker 3: is not being strained, you know.
- 38:05Speaker 4: Yeah, that is the one complaint I heard about the
- 38:07Speaker 4: survey was I couldn't answer multiple times, so I only
- 38:11Speaker 4: let people answer one.
- 38:12Speaker 3: Instead of instead of like a ranking, like a rank.
- 38:14Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 38:16Speaker 2: How many votes did section thirty one get? I'm just
- 38:18Speaker 2: asking for a friend of mine also, yeah, got it?
- 38:24Speaker 4: Yeah? So yeah, Discovery only got twenty two votes six percent.
- 38:30Speaker 4: I'm kind of shocked by that. I would have thought
- 38:32Speaker 4: it would have been higher. But but they were all Scott.
- 38:34Speaker 4: They were all Scott.
- 38:38Speaker 7: Let's have nothing to do with anything. I would like
- 38:39Speaker 7: to interject the the the investigation for the previous polling
- 38:45Speaker 7: is still ongoing. So okay, one headway.
- 38:49Speaker 4: Yeah, but you're still the strong beard.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:51Speaker 6: Well, yeah, where's Pard on that list?
- 38:55Speaker 3: I forget If Picard was on that that list?
- 38:57Speaker 2: I can't No, it wasn't.
- 38:59Speaker 4: Oh, I forgot.
- 39:01Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 39:02Speaker 3: The reason why I ask is you know.
- 39:03Speaker 2: How I how? I know because when I took it,
- 39:06Speaker 2: I got to this question, I said, what the ship man?
- 39:11Speaker 6: Well, I asked my part because I don't know about
- 39:14Speaker 6: you guys. When we cover Pricard, I think that's when
- 39:16Speaker 6: we got our biggest numbers internationally, right, yeah, in terms
- 39:19Speaker 6: of downloads, Like everyone was watching that show all over
- 39:23Speaker 6: the place, specifically, yeah, in particular season three. Yeah, but
- 39:28Speaker 6: you know which I mean, I enjoyed overall.
- 39:30Speaker 3: I android Picard.
- 39:32Speaker 4: I mean, what's funny is I sent these questions to
- 39:35Speaker 4: everyone and nobody mentioned that is off the list.
- 39:38Speaker 6: I think that says something right there, right, yeah, where
- 39:40Speaker 6: where it sort of fits in the in the brain space.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. And then the last question was in the
- 39:46Speaker 4: future I'd like to see and I just came up
- 39:48Speaker 4: with some scenarios either Starfleet Academy, more Strange New Worlds,
- 39:52Speaker 4: Strange New Worlds evolves into a TOS reboot. Kind of
- 39:56Speaker 4: feels like that's what's going on starting Legacy, a TG
- 40:00Speaker 4: reboot show or TV movie, something different with the new
- 40:03Speaker 4: crew that live action series and development with Tawny Newsome
- 40:07Speaker 4: and Star Trek needs to take a break. Kind of
- 40:11Speaker 4: scandershot answers. It was all over the place.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Really, it's two big ones. What the what are the
- 40:16Speaker 2: green and the red there biggest.
- 40:18Speaker 4: The biggest one is they want Star Trek Legacy. That's
- 40:21Speaker 4: six nearly twenty seven, about ninety seven people the second
- 40:25Speaker 4: one was more strange New Worlds at about twenty three percent.
- 40:30Speaker 2: So, well, we all know, we all know the paramount
- 40:34Speaker 2: executives listen to this show in the past, they're they're
- 40:39Speaker 2: sitting in their own cars, in their own driveways. Let's
- 40:42Speaker 2: right to this part.
- 40:44Speaker 5: Yes, and that's why the green light section thirty two.
- 40:50Speaker 4: That's right. But yeah, I like that the TOS reboot
- 40:55Speaker 4: idea only got three people.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Wow.
- 40:58Speaker 6: Yeah, but I now, I'm I'm terrified if that that
- 41:03Speaker 6: that's the direction.
- 41:04Speaker 3: I've so that rumors come up a lot.
- 41:06Speaker 6: I keep hoping it's false because I think that's where
- 41:08Speaker 6: I would I would find trouble.
- 41:11Speaker 4: I bring it up on the show because I think
- 41:13Speaker 4: for us, that's the star trek we grew up with
- 41:17Speaker 4: like that in Das nine, like that era. So it
- 41:19Speaker 4: makes makes sense for the nostalgia bait. Hey, we're gonna
- 41:22Speaker 4: reboot TG Yeah.
- 41:24Speaker 6: Yeah, it's just if you don't do it, like we
- 41:26Speaker 6: said earlier in the show, if you if you don't
- 41:29Speaker 6: do it to the right sensibility, right, and and can
- 41:32Speaker 6: we trust the people in charge who I respect, and
- 41:35Speaker 6: I'm I'm appreciative of the content they've produced, but I
- 41:39Speaker 6: don't know if I trust them to reboot TG, particularly
- 41:42Speaker 6: even what you see uh Picard season three, which is
- 41:45Speaker 6: the most well received. I enjoyed it, I still had
- 41:47Speaker 6: problems with it. I still think they made some pretty
- 41:49Speaker 6: silly choices. And you know, going back to the Borg
- 41:52Speaker 6: well for the billionth time, Uh yes, not that exciting
- 41:56Speaker 6: for me.
- 41:57Speaker 4: Like that the change lanes got the uh the tag
- 42:00Speaker 4: out in the middle of it and never see again.
- 42:03Speaker 6: It was like, it was like such a clever idea
- 42:04Speaker 6: to start with Betty right right, and not to have
- 42:06Speaker 6: to relitergate that. The thing is is, do you really
- 42:09Speaker 6: if you reboot TNG, do you actually get TNG.
- 42:13Speaker 2: No, you don't.
- 42:13Speaker 3: You're gonna get something different. It's why bother.
- 42:16Speaker 6: And it's the same thing with the TS Strange New
- 42:18Speaker 6: Worlds going into TS it's another thing, is like, uh no,
- 42:21Speaker 6: can't we just enjoy Strange New Worlds for its own thing?
- 42:25Speaker 6: And then TOOS still is TOS, TAS is still you know,
- 42:29Speaker 6: you know, I don't mind going back into those worlds,
- 42:31Speaker 6: especially when there's all this other unexplored territory. One of
- 42:34Speaker 6: the greatest disappointments of Section thirty one is it was
- 42:37Speaker 6: advertising we're going to go see h enterprise c era
- 42:42Speaker 6: type stuff that lost era where we don't know a
- 42:45Speaker 6: lot of what happened.
- 42:45Speaker 3: There's a lot of lore you could explore there, and no.
- 42:50Speaker 6: We've got a completely ridiculous and disconnected story where you
- 42:53Speaker 6: couldn't even tell which timeframe you were in at any given.
- 42:55Speaker 4: Oh yeah it did matter.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Yeah, there was much argument about where it took place
- 42:59Speaker 2: in it. Yeah.
- 43:01Speaker 7: Some thing. That's so frustrating because they have the ingredients
- 43:04Speaker 7: to make something we want, because I think the overall
- 43:06Speaker 7: consensus is we want uh, we want TNG era as
- 43:11Speaker 7: in uh, the card era. Okay, and they've got the
- 43:16Speaker 7: you know, well you just mentioned they've they've they're the
- 43:21Speaker 7: rebooting is they've already covered all this stuff. They've already
- 43:24Speaker 7: done a TNG let's not reboot it. They've already done
- 43:27Speaker 7: t S. Let's not reboot it. But they're doing a continuation.
- 43:31Speaker 7: They could do a continuation and legacy. They could expand
- 43:35Speaker 7: on the things that we're already really excited about, Like
- 43:38Speaker 7: you know, we're we're digging the strange New World's storylines,
- 43:42Speaker 7: and we're really liking the timeline of a card learn
- 43:46Speaker 7: from that.
- 43:49Speaker 6: And it's also lower decks right, lower decks is a
- 43:52Speaker 6: little bit before card Era per card Era. Like, as
- 43:54Speaker 6: you said, people are excited about what's going on in
- 43:56Speaker 6: there and.
- 43:57Speaker 3: And developing new lore.
- 44:00Speaker 6: And then this idea again with section thirty one, that
- 44:03Speaker 6: particular product didn't maybe work out so well, but the
- 44:06Speaker 6: concept of a TV movie format where you can explore
- 44:10Speaker 6: parts that you maybe don't do a full investment initially
- 44:13Speaker 6: into a TV series or a feature film. But you know, man,
- 44:17Speaker 6: wouldn't it be great to get to get to see
- 44:18Speaker 6: some of these like corners of the of the franchise
- 44:21Speaker 6: explored that we really wouldn't be able to see otherwise
- 44:23Speaker 6: here focus on Klingons or what I don't know, you know, yeaheah.
- 44:26Speaker 6: The opportunities are endless, and the audience is out there
- 44:29Speaker 6: ready to eat that shit right up right right.
- 44:31Speaker 7: There's been some great Delta Quatter books, Voyager books about
- 44:37Speaker 7: you know, after Voyager, and so you know, maybe something
- 44:40Speaker 7: in that of that.
- 44:41Speaker 3: That'd be great, that'd be great.
- 44:43Speaker 4: And you've got a lot of those sets built in
- 44:45Speaker 4: that uh what they call the holidack now and like
- 44:47Speaker 4: the volume, and you can you can repurpose stuff and
- 44:50Speaker 4: make those TV movies significantly cheaper than what they would
- 44:53Speaker 4: need to be really, and.
- 44:55Speaker 6: If you make the stories good, you could. I mean,
- 44:57Speaker 6: you know, we just this week we just or discussing
- 45:00Speaker 6: the Drumhead for no particularly. Yeah, and that's it's basically
- 45:04Speaker 6: a bottle episode. It's brilliant, brilliant ribbon episode because the
- 45:08Speaker 6: story is good, the acting is good. You don't you
- 45:11Speaker 6: don't necessarily need to, you know, have the action sequences
- 45:15Speaker 6: fill it just filling up time and not doing anything
- 45:19Speaker 6: right right.
- 45:21Speaker 5: Well, and to the point about TV somebody.
- 45:23Speaker 11: Warrant, yeah, no, But to the point about like TV movies,
- 45:33Speaker 11: it's like the scope and focus, Like I think that's
- 45:36Speaker 11: what you're talking about, Patrick, because it's like the Way
- 45:39Speaker 11: of the Warrior in d S nine essentially.
- 45:41Speaker 5: Was a TV movie. It aired both parts at once
- 45:43Speaker 5: and then they chopped it up for syndication later.
- 45:46Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:48Speaker 5: So it's you know, it does the insurrection thing where
- 45:50Speaker 5: it's like a super long episode, but it has that scope,
- 45:55Speaker 5: it has that focus. It's part of like the greater
- 45:57Speaker 5: like narrative as opposed to, hey, let's suicide squad, but
- 46:01Speaker 5: like put star treks.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Yes, so bad.
- 46:08Speaker 4: Yeah, they saw Star.
- 46:10Speaker 5: Trek Renegades on YouTube, and they're like, we should actually
- 46:13Speaker 5: make this.
- 46:16Speaker 4: Renegades would have been better.
- 46:19Speaker 5: Dan looks like, uh, at the start of Apocalypse. Now, now,
- 46:23Speaker 5: as I mentioned Renegades, it's just like the fan.
- 46:27Speaker 3: Going to the helicopter the name off women and children.
- 46:35Speaker 5: Watch in the mirror.
- 46:39Speaker 7: Well, we just did a watch of that was Renegades, right, yeah, yeah,
- 46:43Speaker 7: we just did a watch of Renegades.
- 46:45Speaker 12: Uh for last week or the week before, and.
- 46:48Speaker 2: I did a watch of the first half of Renegades. Yeh.
- 46:55Speaker 4: Dan discovered you can watch things at two time speed.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I should have done that. I might have
- 47:02Speaker 2: got through the whole thing.
- 47:03Speaker 3: But yeah.
- 47:06Speaker 4: But yeah, so that's kind of where we're at. We
- 47:09Speaker 4: don't have any hard numbers to really say what's successful
- 47:12Speaker 4: what isn't. I mean, you can look at other things too,
- 47:14Speaker 4: like the merchandising. You know, Playmates tried to revive the
- 47:18Speaker 4: Star Trek toys and that quickly crash and burn. But
- 47:21Speaker 4: now you've got other companies doing them so well they
- 47:25Speaker 4: do better as a more Niche aimed at the collectors.
- 47:28Speaker 4: Maybe I know right now toy Faar is going on
- 47:31Speaker 4: and Nassell debuted some of the figures with price points.
- 47:36Speaker 4: They're like about twenty eight bucks twenty seven to ninety
- 47:39Speaker 4: five or something like that, about twenty eight dollars for
- 47:42Speaker 4: the new figures and they're supposed to be great and
- 47:45Speaker 4: they look fantastic.
- 47:46Speaker 2: Yeah, no, they look good. Yeah.
- 47:48Speaker 4: Well we have the CEO of Miss l Yeah, yeah,
- 47:51Speaker 4: we had them on and he also.
- 47:53Speaker 7: Did the shows on Netflix, the movie that made us
- 47:57Speaker 7: and stuff, and so they're doing different different characters and
- 48:00Speaker 7: different different figures and stuff.
- 48:05Speaker 6: Yeah, are they going to do like six different way
- 48:09Speaker 6: uns but you know they all look the same.
- 48:10Speaker 2: But just buy six of the you just buy six.
- 48:13Speaker 4: Of the.
- 48:16Speaker 3: Price differently depending on which way.
- 48:18Speaker 2: And it was, So here's here's here's a question.
- 48:22Speaker 4: We have.
- 48:22Speaker 2: We have guests, gentlemen, right, guests today. One of the
- 48:26Speaker 2: figures that uh Nacelle is doing is two vix. So
- 48:31Speaker 2: since we have guests here, I have to ask you
- 48:36Speaker 2: to get Matt. Matt's staring at the ceiling because this
- 48:40Speaker 2: is like here it comes.
- 48:42Speaker 6: Oh great, that means he gets to go first.
- 48:46Speaker 2: So I guess my question is, would you agree, like
- 48:49Speaker 2: any rational person would, that t X was murdered by
- 48:51Speaker 2: Captain Jane Waye.
- 48:52Speaker 5: No, you see, I'm a feminist and I support women
- 48:55Speaker 5: and decisions.
- 49:01Speaker 3: His body, my choice.
- 49:04Speaker 6: Wow, all right, yeah, I actually, uh, man, we we did.
- 49:10Speaker 3: I don't know last year we did two bis. I
- 49:12Speaker 3: can't remember. It wasn't too long ago.
- 49:14Speaker 6: I I don't disagree that she totally murdered two vis.
- 49:17Speaker 3: I agreed that she should have.
- 49:20Speaker 4: Uh.
- 49:22Speaker 6: But it's it's not an easy philosophical question, as many
- 49:27Speaker 6: ridiculous sci fi philosophical.
- 49:29Speaker 3: Questions, not easy to answer, but but it is.
- 49:31Speaker 6: I mean, and I'm my question of course, you know,
- 49:34Speaker 6: and I'm not the first person to ask. This is
- 49:36Speaker 6: like what happened to the flower?
- 49:38Speaker 2: Right?
- 49:38Speaker 6: Remember the because it was two vix was three DNA
- 49:41Speaker 6: strands flowers. Yeah, and when they separated it, I don't
- 49:47Speaker 6: know where the flower DNA went.
- 49:48Speaker 3: Is that still in both Newlix and Tuo Vix. Are
- 49:50Speaker 3: they dealing with that?
- 49:51Speaker 2: Did they?
- 49:55Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 49:55Speaker 6: Exactly right. You figured that out a little bit. He's like,
- 50:00Speaker 6: why do I have that?
- 50:01Speaker 3: Why am I?
- 50:01Speaker 4: Buddy?
- 50:02Speaker 2: But that's it. Yeah, that's all they reproduce.
- 50:04Speaker 4: Now.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Yeah, so that episode is thirty five years old. At
- 50:10Speaker 2: this point, people are and people and people are still
- 50:14Speaker 2: talking about it, and so the question is, do you
- 50:19Speaker 2: think thirty years from now people are going to be
- 50:21Speaker 2: talking about Discovery.
- 50:25Speaker 3: Nope, Yeah, it depends.
- 50:28Speaker 6: I'm trying to I'm trying to think of something that
- 50:30Speaker 6: jumps out.
- 50:32Speaker 3: And I enjoyed the fair but you know, and part
- 50:35Speaker 3: of it, I'm sorry.
- 50:37Speaker 5: I'm sorry. The low hanging fruit of that is like,
- 50:40Speaker 5: yes they will because we've got to Strange in the
- 50:41Speaker 5: world's because of Discovery season two. But that's the you know.
- 50:45Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 50:45Speaker 2: But again, so my point with that is it goes
- 50:48Speaker 2: back to the non episodic nature of some of these
- 50:52Speaker 2: modern shows, where I can remember things that happened on Discovery,
- 50:58Speaker 2: but to ask me what episode it happened in, or
- 51:00Speaker 2: what the name of that episode was, Yeah, maybe even
- 51:03Speaker 2: what season, I can't tell you.
- 51:04Speaker 6: I agree, I tell you that I would say, and
- 51:07Speaker 6: I've argued this for a while now that as much
- 51:08Speaker 6: as I enjoy and I do enjoy serialized storytelling, I
- 51:12Speaker 6: really am hopeful that Star Trek will continue to move
- 51:15Speaker 6: away from this, and it seems to be to a
- 51:18Speaker 6: certain degree. Again, Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds have
- 51:22Speaker 6: done this well. I think a good balance because and
- 51:25Speaker 6: you know, Dan, you make such a great point, like
- 51:28Speaker 6: you're watching Picard. One of the flaws in Picard, even
- 51:31Speaker 6: season three is that because they're telling a story that
- 51:34Speaker 6: has to have you know, ups and downs and dey
- 51:37Speaker 6: neu maws and all that other stuff spaced out of
- 51:39Speaker 6: the season, particular episodes have weird like the multiple plot threads,
- 51:44Speaker 6: like you're like this tonally doesn't work with this, but
- 51:47Speaker 6: they have to say it now because they have to
- 51:48Speaker 6: set up what's going to happen in the next episode
- 51:50Speaker 6: or two, you know, And it's very complicated to do well,
- 51:54Speaker 6: and I frankly think they often didn't do it well,
- 51:58Speaker 6: even if we're still enjoying it. It's in spite of
- 52:01Speaker 6: not because of how it's structured. With the episodic, it's
- 52:04Speaker 6: much easier to be like that's a good episode, that's
- 52:06Speaker 6: a bad episode or whatever. And as a podcaster, right
- 52:11Speaker 6: when we're jumping around, it's so wonderful to just be like, oh,
- 52:14Speaker 6: we'll just pluck We'll just do this episode from season
- 52:17Speaker 6: four of TNG and everyone's happy. You can't do that
- 52:21Speaker 6: with Discovery, you can't do that with Picard. I'm curious
- 52:25Speaker 6: what it'll be with with Starfleet Academy, because it's.
- 52:28Speaker 3: Like, how do you go you can't.
- 52:29Speaker 6: It was like, oh, yeah, let's just do Let's just
- 52:30Speaker 6: talk about Discovery Season two, episode three this week.
- 52:33Speaker 13: It's going to be meaningless to the people who haven't
- 52:36Speaker 13: watched it all recently. Right, I watch a lot of
- 52:38Speaker 13: Star Trek nowadays on Pluto. I watch whatever happens to
- 52:42Speaker 13: be on on those three channels that they have. So
- 52:44Speaker 13: often my wife will walk in the room and she's
- 52:48Speaker 13: not a big trecky, but she's seen TNG Deep Space
- 52:51Speaker 13: nine voyage or she saw them once once through when
- 52:54Speaker 13: we were dating, and that was fifteen, almost twenty years ago. Right,
- 52:58Speaker 13: she walked in yesterday said, oh, is this the one
- 53:01Speaker 13: where the Ferengi were in Roswell?
- 53:04Speaker 2: Yeah, Little Green Men? And that was yes, Little Green Men.
- 53:07Speaker 2: And so that was someone who watched the show once
- 53:11Speaker 2: twenty years ago, and yes, they could remember individual episodes.
- 53:15Speaker 2: And I just don't think that happens with the serialized storytelling.
- 53:19Speaker 7: I agree, but no, and you don't get the character development,
- 53:23Speaker 7: you know. I was just thinking, I don't know anything
- 53:26Speaker 7: about the Discovery crew and I couldn't even name half
- 53:29Speaker 7: of them. You know, I can tell you background, detailed
- 53:32Speaker 7: background about Deep Faced nine Voyager next Generation. I can
- 53:36Speaker 7: tell you where they were born. I can tell you
- 53:38Speaker 7: experiences they had at the academy. I can tell you
- 53:41Speaker 7: about their parents. A lot of characters parents, I can
- 53:44Speaker 7: tell you about their parents.
- 53:46Speaker 6: Characters supporting characters. You can do that work off characters.
- 53:50Speaker 6: You will know some of that information.
- 53:52Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that's true, I think too. One of the
- 53:56Speaker 4: big things missing right now is the philosophical debates like
- 53:59Speaker 4: the two weeks to be like, yeah, we don't get
- 54:02Speaker 4: those man and serialized or episodic either way, it doesn't matter,
- 54:07Speaker 4: like you, that kind of stuff is missing, that that
- 54:10Speaker 4: soul of Star Trek.
- 54:12Speaker 6: But I agree, Oh sorry Patrick, you no, yeah, no, Well,
- 54:17Speaker 6: Duet's a good, very good example of the type of
- 54:19Speaker 6: thing where it's such a such an important episode in
- 54:23Speaker 6: a brilliant episode. I do think I think we got
- 54:26Speaker 6: the closest to that, uh on Lower Decks. I think
- 54:29Speaker 6: Lower Decks did tackle some of those things. However, a
- 54:32Speaker 6: limitation of Lower Decks it is going for a more whimsical,
- 54:35Speaker 6: funny you know, That's that's their goal, so that even
- 54:39Speaker 6: when they have that fun little moral quandary.
- 54:42Speaker 3: It's quick, it's simple, it's not.
- 54:44Speaker 6: It doesn't go as deep as a duet or the
- 54:47Speaker 6: Drumhead or last week we did Inquisition talking about the
- 54:51Speaker 6: origin of Section thirty one and just the concept of
- 54:53Speaker 6: shadowy government agencies, you know, that sort of thing, and
- 54:57Speaker 6: it's it's it's that's one of the most important things
- 54:59Speaker 6: that sci fi exists for is giving a space to
- 55:03Speaker 6: examine some of those ideas somewhat removed from our current reality,
- 55:08Speaker 6: because sometimes it's just too difficult to try to parse
- 55:10Speaker 6: all that out. Put it on a space station. Put
- 55:12Speaker 6: it on a space ship, and you can think about
- 55:14Speaker 6: it better. And I agree, I think we get we
- 55:16Speaker 6: get less of that with Discovery and Picard. They pretend
- 55:20Speaker 6: like they're doing it, but it's so surface level. And
- 55:24Speaker 6: and and because of the structures of the shows being
- 55:27Speaker 6: stretched out over the season, like you're not going to
- 55:28Speaker 6: make a moral point of the course of ten ten
- 55:30Speaker 6: or people, that's not it's not.
- 55:32Speaker 3: Really it's too long.
- 55:33Speaker 4: Maybe that's why Lower Decks was the number one show
- 55:35Speaker 4: for people, because it was it's got a little bit
- 55:38Speaker 4: of that in there. So I don't Yeah, Flavor Sean says,
- 55:44Speaker 4: I think the soul startic died with the last episode of.
- 55:48Speaker 3: What Do you mean demons in Tara Prime? Is that those.
- 55:54Speaker 4: Nice? Well we should probably get to our listener feedback.
- 56:02Speaker 4: So let's get to.
- 56:03Speaker 3: That listener feedback.
- 56:10Speaker 4: All right, So we do have some voicemails to play,
- 56:13Speaker 4: really yeahs, yes, no, no, no, I'll play the first one.
- 56:20Speaker 4: This is from Steve, So here we go.
- 56:23Speaker 14: Hey, fellas, this is Steve and so then Illinois. I
- 56:28Speaker 14: wanted to weigh in really quick. I'm here at work,
- 56:31Speaker 14: but I heard you were call to action, So I'm
- 56:34Speaker 14: gonna tell you what I think of Star Trek. I
- 56:38Speaker 14: love Star Trek. I used to dress up as Star
- 56:40Speaker 14: Trek in high school, and I play an awesome game
- 56:44Speaker 14: called Starfleet Battles, which is a great strategic simulation.
- 56:47Speaker 7: For Star Trek.
- 56:50Speaker 14: Heard Star Trek doesn't speak to me, and I have
- 56:54Speaker 14: four boys, and what kills me is that it's the
- 56:57Speaker 14: content is just not appropriate for my sons, who range
- 57:02Speaker 14: from a junior.
- 57:03Speaker 7: In high school down to.
- 57:04Speaker 14: A third grader.
- 57:06Speaker 5: Old Star Trek.
- 57:07Speaker 14: You can watch that show any of the shows with
- 57:10Speaker 14: any of your kids, and you don't ever have to
- 57:12Speaker 14: feel worried about it. Everything is copasetic, everything's awesome. It's
- 57:17Speaker 14: great and exciting. New Star Trek. I always have to
- 57:20Speaker 14: be wondering every episode, what are they going to do
- 57:23Speaker 14: that's maybe not that is not appropriate for a Midwestern family,
- 57:27Speaker 14: And that's my I think my biggest concern, or my
- 57:31Speaker 14: biggest complaint is they've they've lost side of perhaps what
- 57:38Speaker 14: people what made Star Trek Trek and what people like
- 57:40Speaker 14: about Star Trek. So that's my thoughts, and thanks for
- 57:45Speaker 14: keeping the show going.
- 57:46Speaker 3: Chat is wrong.
- 57:49Speaker 4: Wow, it's nice to go. Calls in.
- 57:54Speaker 2: I want to know.
- 57:55Speaker 6: I want to know how you dress up as Star
- 57:57Speaker 6: Trek as like as the.
- 58:00Speaker 4: Franchise or starting credits.
- 58:05Speaker 7: There's some embarrassing photos of me.
- 58:09Speaker 2: High school, Like did he go to school every day
- 58:12Speaker 2: dressed like Start Treking? He attended conventions.
- 58:17Speaker 4: When he was a school That's true?
- 58:19Speaker 7: Yeah, because I mean most part family friendly stop day.
- 58:26Speaker 3: Yeah, my favorite uniforms by far.
- 58:30Speaker 4: You know your audio.
- 58:33Speaker 7: Yes, oh yeah yeah unless your kids walk in. You know,
- 58:37Speaker 7: the Siege of ar five eighty eight, or when crushers
- 58:41Speaker 7: having sex with a ghost's weird, but or when Shatner
- 58:45Speaker 7: is just smacking a woman around, right yeah, falling in
- 58:49Speaker 7: love with the robot.
- 58:52Speaker 5: Okay, I'm just happy we have the upper story. Just
- 58:56Speaker 5: you talk about discoveries cling on like full front hall
- 59:00Speaker 5: like that was oh yeah, that was a very like
- 59:02Speaker 5: a foundational moment for me something.
- 59:06Speaker 6: So they do have that Lower Decks episode where Boemler
- 59:11Speaker 6: is uh, you know, exposing quite a bit that that's
- 59:17Speaker 6: true the block. But my my son really enjoyed that.
- 59:22Speaker 2: If I ever if I ever start a band, I
- 59:24Speaker 2: think full frontal cling on going to that's fantastic. What
- 59:29Speaker 2: did Mariner call that?
- 59:31Speaker 7: She looked at the She called it a boom window.
- 59:34Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right.
- 59:37Speaker 5: Were very not to get too personal on the podcast,
- 59:39Speaker 5: but they're very foundational for me.
- 59:41Speaker 4: Oh, I appreciate Scott strokes his beard. Yeah, yes, I remember, yes,
- 59:51Speaker 4: all right, we got another voicemail. Let me play that.
- 59:55Speaker 12: Oh I hopeing this is the trick cast line, since
- 59:58Speaker 12: guy's poor voicemails, So here's a trick cast man. And
- 1:00:03Speaker 12: since this is the crossover episode, I'm thinking Paddy the
- 1:00:11Speaker 12: Bear and a Moopsie and Patty gets the Moopsie to
- 1:00:17Speaker 12: stop sucking bones like Wildlife, the encounter be an interesting movie.
- 1:00:32Speaker 12: All I got.
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: That's all I got.
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: That's my favorite voicemail ever.
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: And I like the particularly the sucking bones that the
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: tone in the second second bones.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: The last guy, the last guy is not gonna let
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: his kids listen to our podcast, not anymore? Stop bones.
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: What if convinced Paddington to start sucking bones? Like, what
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: if it was the inverse? Oh yeah, if you're kind
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: of polite, sucking bones will be right, right.
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like if I'm not sure human blood, I'm.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Not sure we're all talking about the same things.
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: Goes on in London. You know, London's pretty intense.
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: It's not normal.
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: So sorry to the first voicemail.
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: All right, we got a couple of people on the
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: line too that want to chat. So let's bring in
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: hipster Spock and then yeah, hey, he's what's going on? Man?
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: Oh there, guys, Hey.
- 1:01:41Speaker 15: Thanks for the crossover thing.
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: This is pretty cool. Yeah, it's pretty fun.
- 1:01:46Speaker 16: It's good to listen to other people other than these
- 1:01:52Speaker 16: these three uh bones.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: Vulcome are notoriously honest.
- 1:02:03Speaker 16: No, no, guys, I'm just joking.
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: It's cool.
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: Now, a couple of things.
- 1:02:09Speaker 16: First of all, this serialized television, Yeah, I don't really
- 1:02:14Speaker 16: like it. Remember the stupid burn from a discovery That
- 1:02:18Speaker 16: was stupid?
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:02:19Speaker 16: And and then the thing is when when you get
- 1:02:22Speaker 16: into and then most of those things end up being
- 1:02:25Speaker 16: stupid h mystery boxes, which ends up being a complete disappointment,
- 1:02:31Speaker 16: and you just and then they never know how to
- 1:02:34Speaker 16: end it in a very satisfying way. I mean, yeah,
- 1:02:39Speaker 16: just not very good. So uh and then they if
- 1:02:43Speaker 16: the if the story art ends up being stupid, they
- 1:02:47Speaker 16: they pinned themselves into a corner and then it's very
- 1:02:52Speaker 16: difficult to get out of it, and so yeah, it's
- 1:02:55Speaker 16: not not worth it. I like the strain two worlds
- 1:03:00Speaker 16: a thing where everything's different, so it's a lot easier
- 1:03:05Speaker 16: or a lot more likely to have good episodes where
- 1:03:09Speaker 16: or or you know, bright spots during the for the
- 1:03:13Speaker 16: season that can salvage the season rather than just you know,
- 1:03:18Speaker 16: throwing that season into the dumpster, you knows.
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: As you mentioned, it makes me think that part of
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: the benefit of that is like when it's episodic, if
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: there's a bad idea, it's fine, it's one episode.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: Which still do that again, yeah, right.
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: But when it's serialized, if it's a bad idea, that's
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: the whole season.
- 1:03:39Speaker 15: Absolutely, And then you've got to realize that Star Trek
- 1:03:44Speaker 15: used to be written by good professional science fiction writers, right,
- 1:03:50Speaker 15: These days.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: They are written by amateurs.
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: I Whage is making a lot more money than any
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: of us.
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: It's still amateurs.
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: I really think the point about the structure is an
- 1:04:05Speaker 6: important one because there are episodes of Tang that are terrible,
- 1:04:08Speaker 6: but they'll have that one scene between Jordy and Data
- 1:04:12Speaker 6: that's like really important, and so it's no, it's not
- 1:04:14Speaker 6: you still get you get that enjoyment. I'm not gonna
- 1:04:17Speaker 6: go There's there's wonderful scenes in Discovery that I'm not
- 1:04:21Speaker 6: going to see for a long time because I'm not
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: going to watch the whole season, right, just to catch
- 1:04:26Speaker 6: those three or four kind of interesting.
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: Yeah, the one chapter in the book that's the whole season. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: We talked about this recently, where there's certain B storylines
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: that are there's certain episodes where I remember the B
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: storyline from that episode and when it comes up, you know, oh,
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: this is the one where Troy can't pass the commander
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: exam because she won't order Jordy to his death, And
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: when it comes up in my rewatch cycle, it's a
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: reminder that, oh, this is also the one where Data
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: was stuf on the planet with amnesia.
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: Yeah right, Yeah, that's the thing.
- 1:05:07Speaker 16: Oh, one more question, When are they going to release
- 1:05:10Speaker 16: the two picks files?
- 1:05:11Speaker 17: Yeah, hopefully that's that's like the Galaxy's biggest question when
- 1:05:20Speaker 17: you release the tiles.
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: You know, I'm doing a voyager rewatch right now, and
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: I'm I'm just I've been thinking about, like, you know,
- 1:05:29Speaker 7: the debrief that Jane Way would get when you know
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: she was, you know, got back to Federation headquarters, and
- 1:05:36Speaker 7: I'm just imagining like the admiral saying, yeah, you know,
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: this is day nine of the debrief, and the admiral says, uh,
- 1:05:44Speaker 7: sit down, Captain Jane Way. I just got to this
- 1:05:47Speaker 7: point in your log.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: So you kill the guy?
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: Was the guy was going around there? My friends? You're
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: my friends? Please save me?
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: Why is there a JAG officer here?
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: I stand by my You know that that was pretty good, Scott,
- 1:06:06Speaker 7: that was good.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: If she's not available for Legacy, I mean you could
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: probably step right Prodigy the next game, Prodigy season three.
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: Now, what's the more awkward conversation that Jamie has some debrief?
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: Is it the two mixed question or is it so
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: you turn into a salamander And like, oh.
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: My god, I I listened to right there.
- 1:06:32Speaker 7: I listened to the Voyager Rewatch podcast with the Robert,
- 1:06:37Speaker 7: Robbie McNeil and Garrett and yeah they talk about threshold
- 1:06:42Speaker 7: quite a bit.
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: Yeah, well thanks for being on Hipsterspock.
- 1:06:46Speaker 16: Thanks guys keeping.
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: And then we also have got Jazz was on the line,
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: so let me bring him in.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: It wouldn't be an episode of treck Cast without chasmiss
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: exactly exactly.
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: The area is. What's going on?
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: Man?
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: What's that?
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: Not much?
- 1:07:03Speaker 18: How's everybody you doing?
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: Good?
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: Good?
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: Great?
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: Thanks?
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: Were you off vacationing?
- 1:07:08Speaker 16: Now?
- 1:07:09Speaker 8: No?
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: I have the in laws here.
- 1:07:12Speaker 18: Okay, I'm in another ring.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: Okay, Star Trek Cast Merch the half.
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: I like it.
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: It promoting.
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: So what do you think? How do you think the
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: how's start Trek going for you?
- 1:07:27Speaker 18: I think it's dying. I think if I do, yeah,
- 1:07:33Speaker 18: because if Academy doesn't hit good, then it's dead. You know,
- 1:07:41Speaker 18: they'll be the death now. So that's it.
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: Now, here's a question for you.
- 1:07:44Speaker 6: Now, when you say dead, do you mean they stopped
- 1:07:46Speaker 6: producing stuff or do you mean they produce increasingly less?
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: I think good.
- 1:07:52Speaker 18: Shelve it for a couple of years and then eventually
- 1:07:55Speaker 18: reboot it.
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: If that's the case, I hope you're right, because my
- 1:07:59Speaker 6: concern is this era of squeezing every penny out of
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: every I.
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: P which I'm worried about James Bond now, for example,
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: that even even as it's yeah, but.
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: Even even as it's doing worse, they're like, well, we
- 1:08:12Speaker 6: can still just keeping the ship to these people.
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: And then it's truly gone.
- 1:08:19Speaker 18: You know, it's like, let's make a money penny show.
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: Let's make this.
- 1:08:24Speaker 18: Show, let's make something of specter, let's make you know,
- 1:08:28Speaker 18: and they're just gonna merchandise the crap out of it,
- 1:08:31Speaker 18: and people won't care.
- 1:08:34Speaker 7: And I know what they're doing. I know what they're doing.
- 1:08:37Speaker 7: They're they're taking they're taking the DNA, they're taking the
- 1:08:40Speaker 7: DNA of old shows.
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: Yeah, let's let's do let's do this one.
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: Yeah, let's pour it into the other one.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: You know, there's the sort of right.
- 1:08:53Speaker 18: Then it becomes Jurassic Park World and they start making
- 1:08:57Speaker 18: new dinosaurs because dinosaurs are born, so we have to
- 1:09:00Speaker 18: make super dinosaurs with the other dinosaurs. And then they
- 1:09:04Speaker 18: have to go craziers aren't cool anymore. We have to
- 1:09:11Speaker 18: like splice them and make them crazy.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Ten years from now, it's gonna be like, all right,
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: the dinosaurs in space.
- 1:09:18Speaker 7: Yes, the game and they're gonna have the Fastes the
- 1:09:23Speaker 7: Furious director do it.
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: I cannot wait for that crossover, the Faster and Furious
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: and Dinosaurs bring.
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: Yeah, the Rex is going around and asking everyone that
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: their friends and not killing it. Would you splice it
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: and turn it back into a raptor and a t Rex?
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: Or would you leave it together?
- 1:09:38Speaker 16: Jazz?
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: That's what I really want.
- 1:09:39Speaker 7: To know, big moral.
- 1:09:43Speaker 18: I think I do the Janeway. You'd have to take
- 1:09:46Speaker 18: them back, you know, I agree with Janeway.
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: Murderers murder. She's a murderer.
- 1:09:56Speaker 18: I wonder how many finals that Janeway scrubbed when she
- 1:09:59Speaker 18: got that. That's probably like Tubac lost his memory because
- 1:10:05Speaker 18: she did something to him.
