- 0:01Speaker 1: Jarrey Katy and Josh six one hundred. Hey, listen, if
- 0:05Speaker 1: you're in the world of weddings right now, maybe you're
- 0:07Speaker 1: going to a wedding, maybe you're planning a wedding, This
- 0:09Speaker 1: might sound a little bit familiar to you. I saw
- 0:11Speaker 1: this story this morning and I was like, what, So
- 0:14Speaker 1: a growing number of couples are telling their wedding guests
- 0:19Speaker 1: no gifts and then they put dot dot dot seriously
- 0:23Speaker 1: no gifts, so just money, no, not even monies. What.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Uh.
- 0:28Speaker 1: There's all these wedding planning platforms that brides can go
- 0:31Speaker 1: on to, you know, and you know, book all their
- 0:34Speaker 1: crap whatever it is. It's been a long time since
- 0:37Speaker 1: I've had to do all this. But anyway, Uh, they're
- 0:39Speaker 1: saying that the number of couples choosing gift free weddings
- 0:43Speaker 1: has roughly doubled in the past year. And the big
- 0:47Speaker 1: reason is is these couples planning the weddings are like,
- 0:49Speaker 1: you know what, going to a wedding has actually gotten
- 0:52Speaker 1: incredibly expensive. So the gift to us is just you
- 0:55Speaker 1: being here and all of us enjoying time together because
- 0:59Speaker 1: we know that you're maybe having to do a flight,
- 1:01Speaker 1: a hotel. An uber full on rental car, and we
- 1:06Speaker 1: don't want you putting out any more money. You have
- 1:08Speaker 1: made the trip and you're celebrating with us. That is
- 1:11Speaker 1: gift enough. And I can tell by your face right now, Katie,
- 1:14Speaker 1: this is not good for you. If you get married
- 1:18Speaker 1: for the fifth time, you're gonna want gifts.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I've never been married. I feel like I should get gifts.
- 1:24Speaker 2: No, you know, like when you have a baby, you
- 1:26Speaker 2: have the baby shower for the first baby, but then
- 1:28Speaker 2: the second baby in the store.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Baby don't need a baby shower. I've never been married.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I feel like I should still, Yeah, but you have stuff.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Another big note in this story is these couples are saying, listen,
- 1:38Speaker 1: we already lived together. We've been living in sin for
- 1:41Speaker 1: a long time. There's nothing else that we need. We
- 1:44Speaker 1: don't need another toaster or a mixer or a charcuterie board.
- 1:47Speaker 1: We don't need any of that. So save your money.
- 1:50Speaker 3: What about like to the honeymoon or a truth they're
- 1:52Speaker 3: not asking for it.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Okay, So here's what I did with my wedding. Okay,
- 1:56Speaker 1: we did have an account set up where people could
- 1:58Speaker 1: go and just donate mine to a fund that would
- 2:01Speaker 1: get us new furniture because we wanted a whole new
- 2:03Speaker 1: bedroom set nice. We wanted to destroy it because we
- 2:07Speaker 1: were newly wet less nice, but we wanted a whole
- 2:10Speaker 1: new bedroom set up. So that's not cheap right now,
- 2:13Speaker 1: you know, if you're wandering over to I don't know,
- 2:15Speaker 1: ok Express at the time, and you know, so a
- 2:19Speaker 1: lot of people did that. They donated to that fund
- 2:21Speaker 1: and it put a massive chunk into that new bed
- 2:25Speaker 1: and we really appreciated that. Other couples are actually flipping
- 2:32Speaker 1: the whole tradition around and they are giving their guests
- 2:36Speaker 1: gifts roll into the wedding which has already costed you
- 2:42Speaker 1: thirty thousand dollars, and they're getting their guests sweatshirts and
- 2:46Speaker 1: hats and concert style posters. Yeah. Wait, that's what I
- 2:52Speaker 1: want when I go to your wedding, a concert concert
- 2:55Speaker 1: style poster of you.
- 2:57Speaker 3: So are they going to set up a merch ten
- 2:59Speaker 3: outside theirs?
- 3:00Speaker 2: Is?
- 3:01Speaker 1: You know how quick that poster would end up in
- 3:04Speaker 1: the trash on my walking out from that wedding. Why
- 3:07Speaker 1: in the world left I would be rolling that thing
- 3:10Speaker 1: up and shoving in a trash can cop.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Into the wedding mins with your initials on it.
- 3:16Speaker 1: So according to the Knot, which is a massive wedding website,
- 3:18Speaker 1: they say that the average cost is simply attending a
- 3:21Speaker 1: wedding right now, and be thinking of this. If you
- 3:24Speaker 1: are attending a wedding is six hundred and ten dollars
- 3:27Speaker 1: per person. Now, that's obviously got to be you're going
- 3:30Speaker 1: out of state, right it has to be. If I'm
- 3:33Speaker 1: rolling down to Parker for a wedding, I'm not spending
- 3:35Speaker 1: six hundred and ten bars. Oh. There was one gen
- 3:38Speaker 1: Z wedding guest on the NOTT and she had a
- 3:40Speaker 1: post that said just going to a wedding for her
- 3:43Speaker 1: friend is costing her two thousand dollars between the dress
- 3:47Speaker 1: and airfare and hotel. And she said, there's no way
- 3:50Speaker 1: that I'm at a gift on top of that. It
- 3:51Speaker 1: feels extremely excessive. So I don't know how I feel
- 3:55Speaker 1: about this. I guess if I don't know, I don't
- 3:58Speaker 1: know how I feel about this. If I to get
- 4:00Speaker 1: remarried now, fingers crossed, I wouldn't want gifts because I
- 4:06Speaker 1: got enough junk.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Well, again, you're at a stage in your life where
- 4:09Speaker 2: you don't want things, But what do you need?
- 4:10Speaker 1: If you want to get married tomorrow. What do you need?
- 4:13Speaker 3: I need a man first.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Registry, go to and get you and you can put
- 4:20Speaker 1: him together myself. But you probably could because technology is
- 4:28Speaker 1: fascinated RW. But like, what would you put on your registry?
- 4:31Speaker 3: I would want the honeymoon paid for.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I would like I think that if I was going
- 4:34Speaker 2: to get somebody to pay for anything, that would be it.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Maybe the down payment on the house.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Like there is a site note of the body of
- 4:42Speaker 1: this where a lot of couples and brides, mostly probably
- 4:45Speaker 1: some bridezillas are saying that showing up without a gift
- 4:48Speaker 1: is rude and you should follow the cover your plate
- 4:52Speaker 1: rule if you're going to a wedding, and that means
- 4:56Speaker 1: the gift should roughly cover the cost of what the
- 4:59Speaker 1: couples on your entire dinner. So think of your chicken
- 5:02Speaker 1: platters sitting in front of you, maybe a couple of drinks,
- 5:05Speaker 1: and you're like, eh, what was that fifty bucks? So
- 5:08Speaker 1: that gift should equal what your plate costs you at
- 5:11Speaker 1: the wedding.
- 5:12Speaker 2: But now they're saying all of this extra stuff with
- 5:15Speaker 2: the you know, complicated too.
- 5:16Speaker 1: It's way too complicated, complicated. Just do what I do
- 5:22Speaker 1: I did this just the other day to one of
- 5:23Speaker 1: our listeners. Hi, Robert, just make up something that you
- 5:27Speaker 1: have going on that day so you can't make you Yeah,
- 5:31Speaker 1: rsvp ah man, I'm busys Robert. Sorry, sorry Robert, Josh
- 5:36Speaker 1: and I will be there harber to do if it's
- 5:39Speaker 1: your sister or something else. I was pretty fired up
- 5:44Speaker 1: the other day and I came into the studio. Yeah,
- 5:47Speaker 1: it was early too, so early. It was like at
- 5:49Speaker 1: six am. Case, like, what did you do yesterday?
- 5:52Speaker 3: That was like an hour before the show.
- 5:53Speaker 2: It was like five day early and you start firing off,
- 5:56Speaker 2: and man, did I go off?
- 5:58Speaker 1: I was like, let me tell you what I did yesterday.
- 6:01Speaker 1: So I had to run some errands on this into
- 6:04Speaker 1: town the other day after the show, and I had
- 6:07Speaker 1: some time to kill before I made those errands, so
- 6:10Speaker 1: I wandered over too. I'm gonna keep everything very vague.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I wandered over to a mall and I went into
- 6:16Speaker 1: this mall. And I'm not going to mention any stores either,
- 6:19Speaker 1: but I went into this mall. So it's a high
- 6:22Speaker 1: end mall. I wandered around and I started going into
- 6:27Speaker 1: a few of the shops, well known shops that are
- 6:30Speaker 1: pretty hit, pretty trendy. Yeah, you'll know them if you
- 6:33Speaker 1: saw him. And I'm walking around these stores and I'm like,
- 6:39Speaker 1: that's a nice shirt. I flip over the price tag
- 6:43Speaker 1: and it's like one hundred and fifty bucks.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Fired you right up.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I walked over to the table. I was like, oh,
- 6:50Speaker 1: I like these little joggers. These joggers look pretty good.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Probably rock these a little bit. One hundred and eighty
- 6:55Speaker 1: dollars for a pair of joggers.
- 6:57Speaker 3: And you were mad, big bad.
- 7:01Speaker 1: The words in my internal monologue I cannot repeat on
- 7:05Speaker 1: the air, my internal monologue. So I was like, okay,
- 7:08Speaker 1: all right, whatever, I'm not buying anything here. So I
- 7:10Speaker 1: left and then I walked down to the hall to
- 7:13Speaker 1: another very well known store that is incredibly hip in trendy,
- 7:16Speaker 1: and I grabbed a baseball cap to see how much
- 7:19Speaker 1: it was, and it was eighty dollars for baseball cab.
- 7:24Speaker 1: And I wasn't in that store for more than thirty seconds,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and I said, I'm out of here.
- 7:32Speaker 3: You screamed it.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Well, I came in the studio and I screamed yeah,
- 7:37Speaker 1: because I went in about four or five other stores
- 7:39Speaker 1: and looked at the price tags of shirts that were
- 7:41Speaker 1: over one hundred dollars. Yeah, joggers, shorts, whatever, Oh, approaching
- 7:46Speaker 1: two hundred dollars, and I in the studio was going, blank,
- 7:51Speaker 1: you blank, you blank every store in this mall. And
- 7:57Speaker 1: then I was like, who are these people buying these
- 8:01Speaker 1: products at that price? Insane? That is stupid, That is
- 8:08Speaker 1: stupid to buy a pair of joggers for two hundred dollars.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I bought a pair of joggers at Sam's Club the
- 8:13Speaker 1: other day that were fifteen bucks. Yeah, they looked exactly
- 8:18Speaker 1: and feel exactly like the joggers in one of these stores.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Mine were fifteen dollars. These were two hundreds.
- 8:24Speaker 3: And he probably couldn't tell a difference if you were
- 8:26Speaker 3: given the.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Two, if it was a blind pants tryon test, I
- 8:30Speaker 1: would not have known. And it instantly got me pissed
- 8:34Speaker 1: off that there are so many people out there struggling,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and there's these millennials and zeers who I don't have.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Any money, they can't afford any means and go crillying
- 8:47Speaker 3: about it.
- 8:48Speaker 1: But you know who these who were shopping in these stores,
- 8:51Speaker 1: people that had no reason to be shopping in these stores.
- 8:55Speaker 1: They were young millennials and zers in there, and I'm like,
- 8:58Speaker 1: this is why you guys can't afford anything. Oh yeah,
- 9:00Speaker 1: you're buying this crap for the gram. Yeah no, the
- 9:03Speaker 1: only reason you're doing that. And that's exactly it is.
- 9:06Speaker 2: It's so it's totally social presence, Like that is absolutely
- 9:10Speaker 2: what it is. I was just talking to the baby
- 9:12Speaker 2: Nana about this because she gets into the habit of
- 9:14Speaker 2: she has like a concert coming up, or you know,
- 9:17Speaker 2: she has an event coming.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Up and she needs a new outfit.
- 9:19Speaker 2: For it, and she does that where she thinks she
- 9:21Speaker 2: needs to buy the high end purse, the high end.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Shoes to go with it, blah blah blah.
- 9:27Speaker 2: And her justification is, well, I'm only doing it when
- 9:30Speaker 2: I have an event, when I have this. You know,
- 9:33Speaker 2: she added up the things that she would spent on
- 9:36Speaker 2: just this summer alone. I asked her to add up
- 9:38Speaker 2: the things that she bought this summer alone. Eleven hundred dollars.
- 9:43Speaker 2: That is dumb clothes, dumb that she wore once. These
- 9:46Speaker 2: are for concerts, These are for you know.
- 9:49Speaker 1: She won't hear them again.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Well, she probably will, but I mean they're really fancy outfits.
- 9:53Speaker 3: There's only so many places you care something like that.
- 9:56Speaker 1: You know.
- 9:57Speaker 2: So it's like it really takes so it stung her
- 10:00Speaker 2: and now she's on a she can't buy anything face
- 10:03Speaker 2: so for from now until the end of the year,
- 10:05Speaker 2: she has grounded herself from contact because she's.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Spent so much money this summer.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Story after story about how the saving that you can't
- 10:14Speaker 1: even cover a thousand dollars expense. There's so many Americans
- 10:17Speaker 1: that can't cover one thousand dollars expense if something were
- 10:20Speaker 1: to pop up with your car. Yeah, all of you
- 10:22Speaker 1: are in there buying these baseball caps for eighty dollars
- 10:26Speaker 1: and that is just so stupid.
- 10:30Speaker 3: It is pretty insane.
- 10:31Speaker 1: And save your money. You can get a ball cap
- 10:34Speaker 1: that does this. It blocks the sun, just the same
- 10:37Speaker 1: off Amazon for fifteen dollars. Put the rest of it
- 10:40Speaker 1: in an investment count and watch your money grow. For
- 10:43Speaker 1: God's sakes.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I mean it is. It is kind of
- 10:47Speaker 3: frustrating to see that.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I called my wife as soon as I left that
- 10:52Speaker 1: I went off on my wife. Fired, uh I did?
- 10:55Speaker 1: I was yes's like, please stop yelling at me. I
- 10:58Speaker 1: was like, this is so dumb that we are all
- 11:00Speaker 1: being so pressured into buying all this crap. You're paying
- 11:04Speaker 1: for a logo so you look good on your social media.
- 11:08Speaker 1: The flex is having cash in the bank and shutting
- 11:12Speaker 1: up about it and not telling anybody, not showing your wealth,
- 11:16Speaker 1: not flaunting it. That should be your flex right now. Well,
- 11:19Speaker 1: but it's instead of an eighty dollars hat, Josh.
- 11:23Speaker 2: We wanted to kind of to point Josh out of the.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Problem, you know, like, you're only part of the problem
- 11:30Speaker 4: if you can't afford it. That's okay, Yeah, you're only
- 11:33Speaker 4: part of the problem. You can't afford it, that's all.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I'll be quiet.
- 11:38Speaker 3: No we did.
- 11:39Speaker 2: That was an awkward silence right there.
- 11:44Speaker 3: It is part of the keeping up with the Joneses
- 11:47Speaker 3: very much.
- 11:47Speaker 2: So it's very much like, so your neighbor gets a pool,
- 11:50Speaker 2: so you need to put in a pool because if
- 11:52Speaker 2: you don't, your life's over. There's no point living if
- 11:55Speaker 2: you don't have a pool, just like your neighbor. Right.
- 11:57Speaker 4: It's the Instagram effect. You always people are always looking
- 12:00Speaker 4: at you, always judging. You always just said you're.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Buying these stupid logos for social media. Stop it, and
- 12:06Speaker 1: I will stop.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Like the older I've gotten too, I realized that too,
- 12:10Speaker 4: Like I'm not going to those stores. I know exactly
- 12:12Speaker 4: what you're talking about. I'm going to those less and
- 12:14Speaker 4: less and less every day.
- 12:15Speaker 1: You come in and say you went to Nordy's this week,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and I was with the GF.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Here's the GF. But that being said, you don't need
- 12:23Speaker 4: the name brand stuff as much as I thought I
- 12:25Speaker 4: used to.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I have on Amazon pants today, Amazon's basics on today,
- 12:30Speaker 1: Target Polo, and I look pretty good today. I look
- 12:34Speaker 1: really well put together, Katie. Where did you buy.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Your I think my entire outfit costs thirty bucks TJ Max.
- 12:41Speaker 3: And you know that is.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Need way more than somebody walking around in two hundred
- 12:46Speaker 1: dollars softy pants.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Well, and I think again, you go back to just
- 12:50Speaker 2: the way you were raised and stuff, because I know
- 12:52Speaker 2: I you know, coming from a household that I didn't
- 12:56Speaker 2: have a lot of money growing up. And you know,
- 12:57Speaker 2: when we went back to school clothes shopping, my parents
- 13:00Speaker 2: directed us towards the clearance tracks.
- 13:02Speaker 3: So that's kind of where I go now. Like when
- 13:04Speaker 3: I go shopping, if I go into a fancy store.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Immediately back of the store, where are the red tags?
- 13:10Speaker 2: That's what I'm looking for, you know, each and every time.
- 13:13Speaker 1: So that's just you can look good by shopping frugal,
- 13:16Speaker 1: not worrying about what your tag says, and just clean
- 13:20Speaker 1: yourself up. You can look put together without spending Oh
- 13:24Speaker 1: my god, if I had bought like two shirts, it
- 13:26Speaker 1: would have been three hundred dollars for two shirts that
- 13:29Speaker 1: I liked.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Yeah, them all, which is not ask not what are
- 13:33Speaker 3: your kids asking for the expensive stuff for? They're not
- 13:37Speaker 3: ask for that.
- 13:38Speaker 1: No, no, And I almost have to push them to
- 13:41Speaker 1: be like, hey, it's it's no. I'm not gonna go
- 13:46Speaker 1: to I don't want to go. I don't want to
- 13:48Speaker 1: talk about kids, but no, let's just say no, okay no.
- 13:51Speaker 1: But they're frugal like me too, because I.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Remember there were certain things that I needed, like I
- 13:55Speaker 2: needed one hundred and twenty dollars shoes when I was
- 13:58Speaker 2: growing up.
- 13:58Speaker 1: But I played back have to do.
- 14:00Speaker 3: I played basketball, so I had the flex.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Right, There is scenarios if you are in a sport
- 14:05Speaker 1: in high school or something, there are some products you
- 14:07Speaker 1: are going to have to spend some cash on, for sure.
- 14:10Speaker 1: But I'm telling you right now, if you're at a
- 14:13Speaker 1: job where things are tight and you're having trouble making
- 14:15Speaker 1: car payments, you're not saving, but yet you're running to
- 14:18Speaker 1: the mall and buying this stuff. It's that whole saying
- 14:22Speaker 1: that you're buying crap that you don't need to impress
- 14:24Speaker 1: people you don't even like. And I love that saying, well, absolutely.
- 14:28Speaker 2: It's truly like the younger generation a lot of it.
- 14:32Speaker 2: They are influenced on social media and what they watch
- 14:34Speaker 2: because well, now, if you see any of like the
- 14:37Speaker 2: like Love is Blind, for example, you'll see a pretty
- 14:39Speaker 2: outfit that a girl is wearing, and immediately you'll see
- 14:42Speaker 2: a little prompt that says, do you want this outfit?
- 14:45Speaker 3: Which buy it now?
- 14:45Speaker 1: Crazy that you can do that.
- 14:47Speaker 3: You can just buy it right from the screen.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Shout out to Steph who just texted instead, I'm wearing
- 14:50Speaker 1: a three dollars shirt I picked up at a garage sale. Yeah,
- 14:53Speaker 1: you're doing it right, step Yeah, save the rest of
- 14:56Speaker 1: your money, put it in an interest bearing account. A
- 14:58Speaker 1: lot of people writing in about how they're flex is
- 15:00Speaker 1: shopping at Costco. Hell's to the Yes, get you some
- 15:03Speaker 1: big jars and mayonnaise and pants.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I love getting a good deal on something like I
- 15:09Speaker 2: have a bathrobe that's the UGS.
- 15:12Speaker 3: It's an UGGS bathrobe.
- 15:14Speaker 2: It is three sizes too small, but I paid twenty
- 15:16Speaker 2: dollars for it.
- 15:18Speaker 3: I wear it almost every day.
- 15:20Speaker 1: I don't know about that that one you might have
- 15:22Speaker 1: to throw away. So anyway, I'm sorry. I should have
- 15:25Speaker 1: played a song, but my I'm pretty fire.
- 15:27Speaker 3: You are fine, You've been fired up.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I need to do this for your majesty, your majesty proclamation.
- 15:33Speaker 1: All I'm asking you guys to do is think logically
- 15:35Speaker 1: about this stuff. If you see pants that are almost
- 15:38Speaker 1: two hundred dollars and a shirt is two hundred and
- 15:41Speaker 1: a baseball cap that's eighty dollars for a hat, just
- 15:44Speaker 1: ask yourself, should I buy this or should I save
- 15:46Speaker 1: a little money? Okay, that's all I'm asking.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Give yourself a day to think about it, right, yes, yes.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Yes, And honestly, nobody on social media even cares. They
- 15:55Speaker 1: don't care what you're wearing. Okay, in Amazon Basics pants
- 15:58Speaker 1: they rock, all right? All I have to say, what
- 16:00Speaker 1: are we done? Were done?
