Transcript
- 0:24Welcome back into the Treehouse. I'm Dan, O'Malley, joined of course by
- 0:28Alfy Coy and also by Trey Trenholm and joining us. I think this actually
- 0:35might be our first quote unquote real guest for the first time in a long
- 0:40time back in the treehouse. The one and only Katie FW Fox Four's Steve
- 0:47Noviello, Good afternoon. Oh you're kind Who was the fake? Who was
- 0:52the first fake guest? Other people that are occasional recurring guests on the show,
- 0:58like Everard Newton, our attorney Jerry. You remember Jerry? Oh?
- 1:02Yes? And I'm familiar with Effort's work, aren't. We all are very
- 1:10different? How did you get away with m moving your infro music overhe?
- 1:15Did you remember? Consumers? Not not for the big evil record labeled?
- 1:30Wow, we are off to a good start. We actually are. We
- 1:38just don't call a whole lot of attention. Yeah, how can I edit
- 1:41up the first five minutes of the show? Oh? Hello, Well,
- 1:49it is nice to hear both of your voices. It's been a minute,
- 1:52it has it has? Yeah, I'm not sure what happened. I don't
- 1:55I don't think I ever received the uh the sorry you got fire or tips
- 2:00treats delivery Alphie, did you get it? Or did Mike Reiner eat it?
- 2:04No? He probably ate it. He's the type you see cookies and
- 2:07just sent to the station and they were like, well, totally give it
- 2:10to them. I was like, oh yeah, yeah, yeah. People
- 2:14there saying lots of things we're going to talk about today. No, you
- 2:23know what I was actually curious about this um is getting fired in television,
- 2:30similar to how you get fired in radio. You have to ask somebody who's
- 2:35been fired. I knew it. I knew that was going to be the
- 2:38answer, and that's the reason why I wrote it down. I've said to
- 2:39myself, I bet Steve Novielle is going to say, I don't know,
- 2:43Dan, I've never been fired from te I just think if I've ever been
- 2:46fired from any job. Yeah, I mean, let's see. I mean
- 2:53no, no, no, definitely not there. Uh no, yeah no,
- 3:00all right, well let's let's let's go down your your resume. Roald
- 3:04Quick, what was your first not your first TV job? What was your
- 3:07very first job? I was thirteen years old, flinging frozen yogurt at Yummy
- 3:13Yogurt, making two dollars eighty five cents an hour. Oh you and Meghan
- 3:15Markle Yes, me and Megan were there together. Yeah. And then I
- 3:23left there to become the customer service representative at Marshall's, quickly promoted to customer
- 3:30service desk manager at one age fifteen sixteen. Holy, you know there were
- 3:38full grown adults who were like, Steve, can I take my fifteen?
- 3:43Yeah? Go go for it. I know how you old people need to.
- 3:47I was right. I was in charge of returns and exchanges. I
- 3:51was also which was my favorite part and I probably can still do it.
- 3:53I was in charge of the evening announcements, like to tell me what the
- 4:00store was going to closet. Let's say that that that we're in a Marshal's
- 4:05and I'm there shopping for fantastic deals and you, Steve Novello, it's it's
- 4:11you know, eight fifty eight, and you can tell. But I'm not
- 4:14slowing down looking at h just amazing deals on shoes. How would you ask
- 4:19me to politely exit the building and a time it up? So first of
- 4:24all, I like to do it more than two minutes before closing. I
- 4:27like to give you a full half hour warning so I you might hear something
- 4:30like this. Okay, ready to I tend to wash your shoppers. The
- 4:34time is now eight thirty pm. Our store will be closing an exactly one
- 4:39half hour. Please bring your final selections to our registers for a quick,
- 4:42kind and courteous check out. We do want to remind you, folks that
- 4:45our jewelry counter, our customer service for turncounter, and our fitting rooms will
- 4:48close fifteen minutes before the store closinging. We invite you to come back again
- 4:51tomorrow for a great day of savings here at Marshall's. And you still got
- 4:56it. You're not allowed to take on endorsements as as a journalist. Are
- 5:00you actually on my Instagram bio? Says former Marshall's manager, Just because I
- 5:05feel like it's so there's got to be so many of us, right,
- 5:09Like, what do they always say, if you've ever worked at McDonald's,
- 5:11put it on your resume, because chances are the guy across the table or
- 5:14the woman across the table um has worked there too. Actually, I like
- 5:16that idea. I like of putting on there someplace that seems random that you've
- 5:20worked, especially especially if you're known in an industry that's very, very different.
- 5:27Yeah, for sure for right now there fired there are Marshall's employees out
- 5:32there right now that are listening to this, going, oh, holy crap,
- 5:36I wonder where the war stories he could tell. Oh, we used
- 5:41to have a woman. It was brilliant. So she would come and shop
- 5:44the store. She had you know what Dennis and gun is um the the
- 5:47you know, the plastic um, the thing that connects the paper tag to
- 5:53the actual fabric tag, like that connects it shoots at a piece of plastic
- 5:58right, that connects it right that you can't get the tag off without ripping
- 6:02it right. It was called the Dennison gun. And that's that's how you
- 6:05So she used to come into the store shop a whole bunch of stuff,
- 6:10and because the inventory at Marshalls is so random, like we don't have you
- 6:13know, twenty of each thing or like a new season, it's just random
- 6:16stuff, she would buy a bunch of stuff, go home, take the
- 6:20tags off of everything, take out her Dennison gun tag, like old stuff
- 6:25she had around the house, and then come back and bring her receipt that
- 6:30she had just you know, acquired by buying new stuff, which now matched
- 6:33the tags that she had put on her old stuff and return everything. Um,
- 6:38no one say anything for a brief moment. If you can look at
- 6:42my face right now, do you see how wide my eyes are? Steve,
- 6:48how do you know my sister? I was gonna say, was it
- 6:50you? Did she do that? You're not from California? Are you?
- 6:59No? The other post? Okay, okay, I don't think my sister
- 7:02was by coastal in her in her fraudulent activities. But yeah, as soon
- 7:09as you started mentioning the gun and the tags and taking them home, it
- 7:14started to hit real close to home for me. Did she return the item?
- 7:18Did she return the items to the same store? Oh yeah, oh
- 7:23yeah she was no. I mean, and as the fifteen year old,
- 7:26but behind the counter, I was like, I don't, I'm not gonna
- 7:30hassle you for this lady, Like, I'll take it all back, you
- 7:33know what. To my sister's credit, she at least went to different stores.
- 7:35Yeah, real quick, I don't know if you guys have ever met
- 7:41before, if I'm being rude, So inside the tree House, Steve Nove
- 7:45Yellow Fox four Trey Tren home from of course the tree House. I think
- 7:48we had Steve on I mean one time, maybe when I'm back in my
- 7:53days. So, well, it's good to see you again. Nice see
- 7:56You've we've actually grown an interesting bond with Steve over these recent years, since
- 8:05since you left the radio show Trey, and not the least of which is
- 8:09apparently him digging into my family history and presenting it in a fashion that seems
- 8:13a little a little fishy to me. But we're just going to roll with
- 8:16it for now. Yeah, a little a little familiar, a little familiar.
- 8:22Okay. So, since you've never been fired from television because you're all
- 8:26of them, what's it like when you've seen other people get canned? So,
- 8:31oh god, you're gonna get me in trouble. Um. So it
- 8:35doesn't happen often. I can tell you without naming stations that the process is
- 8:41usually like, you know, uh, there's usually a ramp up because the
- 8:48station would be like, Okay, we are now pre preparing for any resulting
- 8:54lawsuit, so we need to document the heck out of this person's performance,
- 9:00um, and make them miserable for the next six months until they either quit
- 9:03or we've got enough on them to be able to say, hey, we
- 9:07warned you for six months, you know. Um. So there's that.
- 9:11Um, I've never really seen a whole lot of like, gosh, we
- 9:15don't feel like this is working out? What can we do to help you
- 9:16become more successful? There's not there's not a whole lot of that is there
- 9:22is there in television? So in radio, this there's a thing that happens
- 9:26fairly often. And I think this happens in other industries as well, But
- 9:28I'm curious if it happens in television. You'll have someone in management that wasn't
- 9:33very successful and for whatever reason, they get promoted that it's like someone above
- 9:39them recognizes, Okay, you're not really good at this job. Let me
- 9:43give you a better wood is see if you're see if you're better at this
- 9:46job. Does that happen in TV? I feel like, um, you
- 9:50are not making up this storyline. No, this is purely purely the dance
- 9:56scabbing right now, he's scabbing. This is just in the middle of the
- 9:58writer strike. This is all fake right exactly. You're just making this up.
- 10:05I think that there's always you know, people who you're like, how
- 10:09did this happen? Um? At least I've heard can we talk about something
- 10:15else? I mean, this is very I'm sorry, Steve, I'm sorry.
- 10:18I I you know, I'm not going to apologize. I love I
- 10:22love hearing and watching you score them a little bit. Yeah, like like
- 10:26to I'd like to maintain my never been fired track record. Please? Did
- 10:30you have one clear management coming on with us? Do you have to clear
- 10:33with management again? Because we're no longer on the radio station, it's sort
- 10:37of a separate entity. I figured, well, maybe you go to management
- 10:41and this and all that. Luckily our promotions guys a fan of yours and
- 10:46you've always been. I'll tell I mean, I mean, if we're I
- 10:50mean, way back in the day when I first moved into the market,
- 10:52I was like, there's absolutely no way I would ever go on that show.
- 10:56Because I used to do somebody's show in your building at the time when
- 11:00you guys were back over off of STEMMENSUM and I was a pretty regular guest
- 11:03on their show and they were on right before you UM, and I was
- 11:07like, no, there's absolutely no way I would ever step put into that
- 11:11studio. Never say never say never. Know here we are best buddies.
- 11:16I got longer exists. I'm gonna throw out a name and this is just
- 11:22completely obscure, but promo Joe isn't still there is. Oh my gosh,
- 11:26I wish he was. So he was the best. Yeah he was.
- 11:30He was the best. I mean you don't. They don't just hand that
- 11:33name out, No, you have to earn that. It's a title,
- 11:35there's a coronation and everything. Yeahs ancient Rock for sure. I mean he
- 11:41and he loved I mean loved um. You know, it was not.
- 11:46I mean sometimes I've been in situations, um, in my past years where
- 11:50you know, you're working on something and you're like, oh my god,
- 11:52and here's all the elements and here's you know, you know, for your
- 11:54and they're like, you know, and then they come back with the most
- 11:58generic like you know, to night at you know, eleven blah blah blah,
- 12:03and you're like that really that's but Joe, I mean, I mean
- 12:05everyone was like he was like Spielberg. I mean it was like every past
- 12:11thirty seconds that everybody saw the promo voice guy. Now we're talking about the
- 12:16different guy. He's hits in his like pajamas somewhere. I think in La
- 12:20Promo Joe was one of our producers that was was in charge of like writing
- 12:24and sometimes shooting promotional campaigns, either for like a whole campaign or for simply
- 12:30like a special report that sometimes see see yeah, So like a lot of
- 12:33times the television stations, the news, the TV news local, they'll do
- 12:39like the big sweeping uh well, we'll do the package like you're talking about.
- 12:43It might be like thirty seconds after air and it'll be like this sweeping
- 12:46thing they're doing, like a helicopter U photography of downtown Dallas, you know,
- 12:52Fort Worth over at the time, you know, you know Texas Stadium
- 12:56or whatever, all these grand landmarks that are for milliar and then they zoom
- 13:01in with a from a low angle because they're want to be Michael Bay,
- 13:05directors of the of the News at ten anchor team, basically everything that the
- 13:11movie Anchorman made fun of those promos right there, Yeah we did. Those
- 13:16are image campaigns, we don't we. Yes, I have definitely been been
- 13:20part of that in my past lives, for sure. But sometimes they just
- 13:26write themselves, like that story we did years ago that I know you'll remember,
- 13:28where the woman stole my identity and I was like, I've got an
- 13:31amazing promo. There wasn't even a voice over for it. It was like
- 13:35just like the sound it was like words on the screen like tonight at nine
- 13:41Steve Noviello face to face, you know, with his identity thief, and
- 13:46then you hear like the sound bite you picked the wrong guy, you know,
- 13:50with this like really dramatic music. It was an awesome promo in fact,
- 13:54because I shot it with my iPhone unknowingly actually got nominated for a photography
- 13:58Emmy for that promo, which I always Raoul. I'm always like, yeah,
- 14:03I'm an Emmy nominated photographer. Also. So by the way, Trey,
- 14:09I don't know if in the conversation you had with no Viello back in
- 14:11the day, but he's also a master at inserting all his Emmy awards in
- 14:18yeah, have you won anymore in the last like six eight months since we
- 14:20talked to you. I think he won one just now. No, I
- 14:26have not. Um I I set it aside for a minute, you know
- 14:31why, because now he just wins them passively like like he's a landlord.
- 14:35Oh no no, no no no no no no no certainly not certainly not.
- 14:41So I'm your how's your Marconi coming? Does that include podcasts? Now?
- 14:48Or how does that? When does that work. You know, there's
- 14:52there are podcast awards, and ironically enough I heard is one that that that
- 14:54gives some of those out Um but mel An Award? Yeah, yeah,
- 15:01that's that's not what you're smelling, Steve Um. The are we are we
- 15:05discussing that at all? Or like? Is that? I'll just have to
- 15:09text you later to figure out what happened? Figure out what? Like what
- 15:13why we're not on the radio right now because people made some decisions that we
- 15:18would not have made and they have to now live with the ramifications of those
- 15:22decisions. Oh I dare you speak to truth? Alphie? That's too much
- 15:26truth. Wow. I'm not speaking disparagingly of anyone or any of my former
- 15:31co workers, nor would I want anyone to speak disparagingly of them. But
- 15:35none of us here would have made the same decisions that were made. Well
- 15:39for sure, all right, I wouldn't have fired me either. It does
- 15:43go back to the original question about management. You know you fail in another
- 15:48market. Oh okay, well let's give you a bigger market, because then
- 15:50you'll succeed. Yeah. I do see that in other industries. I will
- 15:54say, like friends of mine who work in like finance, let's say,
- 15:58or you know some other kind of like again, TV is such a weird
- 16:03we don't really have a traditional office life. Um there there is a more
- 16:07of a traditional management hierarchy, but it's more so like in I'll see a
- 16:12lot of friends in other in other industries that are like, what, like
- 16:15this person just got promoted to like a director or a VP or you know
- 16:18something, and they're like they you know what, how did how did that
- 16:22happen? Who do they have photos of? Is really the kidding lask well
- 16:26that that question gets asked in radio stations as well. Often Yeah, the
- 16:32um so, the very short version like this even shorter version of what Alfie
- 16:37gave is is something that happens in radio fairly often, but rarely happens in
- 16:41television, which is the radio station change formats. And we were on the
- 16:45way, Yeah, that was it, even though I would think premiere show
- 16:49that you'd want on that format, but hey, not our decisions. You
- 16:53guys were on for I mean again not to you know, blow smoke up,
- 16:56you know, but um, you held it for a really long time.
- 17:00I mean I remember way back in the day, like again when I
- 17:03used to go and then like do pugs and Kelly and like that era.
- 17:07It was like this week we're a sports station, and this week we're indie
- 17:10rock, and this week we're going to be a you know, classic rock
- 17:12station, and this week we're going to be you know. And it was
- 17:14I mean, it was really obviously do Jagger Show as well, and it
- 17:18was it it really. I feel like the format change happened pretty frequently.
- 17:23I mean, you guys were there for quite a while, and I do
- 17:27have to say would would shift its focus every so often. Then eventually it
- 17:32straight up changed the format into a more focused one, which was just sports.
- 17:37And that's pretty much what happened with with ninety seven one. It was
- 17:41it was one format, then they started changing to some different things, and
- 17:44then then they decided to switch to one thing. Yeah, and so it
- 17:47was not a disparaging This is not a disparaging statement at all. But uh,
- 17:52the only people that have ever beat in the ratings, Uh everyone on
- 17:56that station now is us. That's it. How did you speak more true?
- 18:03You've got to keep black Thunder or whatever I got, I got it
- 18:06right here. Oh that's Alphie's totally Alphie's and it's in your on your lawn
- 18:10er yes, you're sitting right there. I'm looking at it. It's up
- 18:11on blocks and Alphie, you might want to preface that is the people who
- 18:21had beaten those those other the current lineup in the ratings before they made the
- 18:26format correct. Yeah, yeah, yeah, because now like you could say
- 18:30that about w r R, that's true. Yeah, yeah, I think
- 18:33KCBI can say that they still are KCBI. Steve dr Are you familiar with
- 18:38KCYBI. I'm like, I think we're getting a little esoteric here, so
- 18:44I'm more familiar with it because I don't know if it's still there. But
- 18:47KCBI is a small Christian radio station that was at least when I was in
- 18:52high school in Arlington. It's studio was right off of I thirty in the
- 18:56middle of Arlington and you'd drive past it frequently. And full disclosure, the
- 19:03minister that that officiated my wedding to my wife, Tara Is was a weekend
- 19:11host at KCBI. Oh my god, are you kidding me? Dan?
- 19:14And that guy has had more rating success. How have I never heard this?
- 19:18How have I never heard that you had another radio host officiate your wedding?
- 19:23So I didn't know it for o So here's the very brief story.
- 19:30Tara had found somewhere researched a place to find wedding officients because neither one of
- 19:36us or hardcore churchgoers, so we needed someone performed the ceremony, something simple,
- 19:40something basic. She found this company and they recommended this guy that they
- 19:45worked with, and we met with him. I forget where we met with
- 19:48him. It was like a diner or something. And within the first two
- 19:51minutes all we've done is introduced ourselves. This is Tara, I'm Dan,
- 19:55we're getting married on this date. What kind of ceremony do you want?
- 19:57Blah blah blah. That was really about it until he says, because I
- 20:02just want to let you guys know, like I'm you know, I'm very
- 20:04comfortable speak in front of a crowd. I actually I actually do radio.
- 20:10I have a weekend show on CASEYBI, to which I looked at him.
- 20:15I just went, that's great. Well, you know, I'm something of
- 20:19a radio man myself. Myself, well, you know what, I just
- 20:23kept that to myself, despite the fact that I'd say a strong thirty percent
- 20:27of the attendees at our wedding. We're also in media, and this guy
- 20:33was he was talking about mad I got a weekend Joe on CASEYBI. It's
- 20:37like, that's awesome, dude. Did it make it difficult to have a
- 20:40wedding on the weekend as well? I mean, did he have to get
- 20:42the day off of work or yeah, he had to run dust of I
- 20:45kind of felt bad, but the officiating gig paid better than CACYBI from my
- 20:52hat in the ring that you were looking for an efficient but I guess it's
- 20:55too late now. If you ever renew, let me know. No,
- 20:57you are too tall and way too good looking to be standing there. I
- 21:02need to be the pretty ones. Steve and the folks at Casey B I
- 21:07Dan, don't worry about him and having to run best of that one time.
- 21:08They're doing fine. They are pretty much a ratings juggernaut at this point.
- 21:12With who they're beating and where are they they are, I think,
- 21:21well and they may maybe maybe they're tied for twenty third on the quarter hour.
- 21:29You'd think the best of God would at least break the top twenty And
- 21:37this is when we all went to hell. Is anybody you're in the treehouse,
- 21:44Swet, Dan O'Malley and Alfie Coy Rodney Anderson joins us in the treehouse
- 22:06right now. His phone number that you'll need right now, nine seven two
- 22:08nine eight fifty two hundred, that's nine seven two nine eight five fifty two
- 22:12hundred, or his website anytime, Rodney Anderson dot com. Rodney on this
- 22:17today, let's start homeowners. Obviously, it's very important for us and for
- 22:22people in general to own our homes. And I'm wondering if you could share
- 22:25with us today the top three reasons why people are buying homes right now.
- 22:30Well, Number one is to build equity, because as home values continue to
- 22:33move higher, and as you pay your mortgage down, you create what's called
- 22:37equity, and that equity can be used for a lot of different things.
- 22:41You could do a cash out refinance if you get to the fight financial trouble.
- 22:45You could sell a house down the road if you grow out of your
- 22:47house, and use that as a substantial down payment. So building equity is
- 22:51very important. Number two stability. People never talk about this, but owning
- 22:55a home can provide a lot of stability and a sense of security for you
- 23:00in your family, you know, versus the neighbors having their music up as
- 23:04loud as they want in the apartment complict like, and there's tax benefits.
- 23:08You can have tax benefits for many times when you own a home because you
- 23:14may be able to deduct more and the interest in the taxes on the property.
- 23:18And I'll throw a fourth one in here. It's called personalization. We
- 23:22had a buyer just close on their house that wrote as a great email and
- 23:25said, I love that I can personalize my house now. I can paint
- 23:29the walls the way I want to and don't have rental situations down the road
- 23:33when I move out and added expenses, and I can personalize my house.
- 23:38I can put my own paintings up, I can have my own furniture in
- 23:41there. It's a lot different than renting, and a lot of people like
- 23:45that whole idea. Plus, it's great to raise a family in a home
- 23:48versus an apartment. Definitely. And it's amazing because I remember when I first
- 23:52bought my home with you working as my lender. People said, well,
- 23:56you know, you're not gonna have that same freedom that you had kind of
- 24:00come and go whenever you want. It's like, no, actually, I'm
- 24:02going to have more freedom because, like you said, I can do whatever
- 24:04I want in my house. I don't have a landlord or an apartment company
- 24:07to answer to. And that's one of the great benefits that that that sometimes
- 24:11I think people forget. Well. The first thing is in the first step,
- 24:15though, Dan, before you go out and do all that, you've
- 24:17got to be preapproved up front. Definitely, you Oh, what price range
- 24:19are you looking at? What are my payments going to be? How much
- 24:22money am I going to need? What mortgage options are best for yourself.
- 24:26Don't set yourself up for a failure looking for a seven hundred thousand dollar home
- 24:30if you only qualify or your payment and your budget only fits a five hundred
- 24:34thousand or home. Yeah, so this is there one of the many reasons
- 24:38why you need to call Rodney and his team when you're ready to buy that
- 24:41home called nine seven two nine eighty five fifty two hundred nine seven eight five
- 24:45fifty hundred or again anytime Rodney Anderson dot Com. Thanks Rodney, Thanks yea,
- 24:51And if M Lending is an equal housing lender three thousand, Village Parkway
- 24:52Stite, four hundred Hihland Village, Texas and MLS two three two nine.
- 25:03You're in Luke Treehouse with Dan O'Malley and Alfie Cord. That is correct,
- 25:11you are back in the treehouse. I'm Dan O'Malley, Alfie Cooi is here,
- 25:15Trey Trenholm is here, and somehow we didn't scare him off yet,
- 25:18although I'm sure it's inevitable. Fox Fours Steve Nova Yellow is in the treehouse
- 25:23today. We love, we absolutely love having you, Steve, so thank
- 25:26you for being back with us. Well, I appreciate you asking me back
- 25:30real quick before we jump in with everything you've been up to lately. This
- 25:36segment is brought to you by Cook DFW Roofing and Restoration, the website cookedfw
- 25:41dot com. That is cook dfw dot com. You can schedule a free
- 25:45roof inspection right now if you just go to cook dfw dot com give them
- 25:49a call. It's storm season. It's only a matter of time before you're
- 25:52going to need someone to come take a look at your roof to see if
- 25:55you have any damage or how bad the damage is. We in the Treehouse
- 25:57recommend cook dfw dot com. See Steve, we're actually finding a way to
- 26:03uh you know, uh well, not make a total living at this when
- 26:07we still have to panhandle some but still not bad, right, I'm sorry?
- 26:11What was that website again? Was it cook dfw dot com? God,
- 26:15you are a professional at this. That is correct, Steve. If
- 26:18you want, we'll wait for you to get a pin. But while you
- 26:19get a pin so you can write down, I'll tell you again it is
- 26:22cook dfw dot com. What kind of roof do you guys have on the
- 26:26treehouse? I'd have to ask h Daniel cook that because he's the one that
- 26:32installed it. And it's a bunch of fancy words that I didn't know,
- 26:33but I think it's one of those thatched. Yeah, well it was that
- 26:40beforehand, but then we got a roofing company to sponsors, and now now
- 26:44we got something fancy. Oh mightbe like a clay tile. Yes, very
- 26:48Spanish. Yeah, yeah, we've gone Mediterranean and yet very big in my
- 26:53neighborhood. All right, So we we sort of caught up a little bit
- 26:59early year as far as what we've been up to, which is kind of
- 27:02obvious, and then what sort of happened? It sounds so pathetic, Dan,
- 27:07What what do you say we've been up to, which is pretty obviously
- 27:11sitting around and just eating nothing but leftoor pizzas and sadness, just been wallowing
- 27:18in our own depression, and well we didn't say it specifically, but it
- 27:22was certainly implied. Well, I mean, but doing it all with the
- 27:26absolute assurance that you don't have to worry about a leaky roof. So,
- 27:30I mean, there's the plans of the plus side right there. Thank you
- 27:33Steve for bringing us back on time, and you don't have to worry about
- 27:37the mortgage for it, su treehouse, especially with braids today. Man,
- 27:42that's that's that's a good deal. That's a good deal. Now we just
- 27:45decided to go with squatters rights. We're just on the back of somebody's property
- 27:51and they just don't know it yet. So what have you been up to
- 27:55lately, Steve? Know? A yellow from Fox for you know. So
- 27:57it's been kind of crazy. I've been actually filling in quite about. I'm
- 28:00working mornings quite a bit lately because everyone on the morning she was getting married,
- 28:04Yes, well Hannah and Shannon both. Shannon just had her wedding,
- 28:08so that was two weeks for the wedding and then her and her now husband
- 28:14went to the Maldives for their animoon. I saw a couple of photos of
- 28:21that were there did anyone from Fox four get an invitation or did she just
- 28:23stiff everybody? Oh? No, I was invited. I mean Alex Boyer
- 28:27was there, Hannah was there. Nice. Yeah, we could make it,
- 28:32you know. It was that in Austin. It's a really cool outdoor
- 28:34venue m with a really beautiful wedding. It was just kind of a lot
- 28:40with us and the kids, and we couldn't get you know, we would
- 28:41need to sit her and all that other kind of stuff. So we just
- 28:45we just sent a gift. But uh yeah, So she was out,
- 28:48so I was in for her. And now Hannah is out. She's away
- 28:53for her birthday, and then in a couple of weeks she'll be away again
- 28:59because actually both of them will be away because now it's Hannah's wedding. I
- 29:03believe it's in June. That is a lot of time off. Are y'all
- 29:07one of those companies that has quote unquote unlimited time off? No? No,
- 29:12no, no no no, you just did you just pause and count
- 29:15all your vacation days? And um we I will say Fox does have a
- 29:23really nice um vacation schedule for us, but it's not unlimited. No,
- 29:27we don't, Okay, Yeah, do you know about that whole scam,
- 29:32right, but when they do unlimited PTO, yes, yeah, So Doug
- 29:36and I were talking about that because his We actually were at dinner the other
- 29:40night with an executive from another credit union. They were talking about that,
- 29:44and it's interesting and that you kind of refer to it that way because what
- 29:49happens generally is when you give people unlimited time off, they tend to take
- 29:53less time off than they do. So if you say to something you've got
- 29:56three weeks, you're like, oh, my gosh, I better take the
- 29:59full three weeks before lose it. But if you're like, oh, you've
- 30:00got an unlimited time off, next thing, you know, the year has
- 30:03passed and you've only taken two and you're like, okay, cool, that
- 30:06was fun. Yeah, I've never left I have never left vacation time on
- 30:10the table. Oh god, no, no, I'm taking it. And
- 30:12I will say this though, I totally screwed up on my sick leave because
- 30:15there is that guilty conscience thing that you get conditioned in America that you have
- 30:21to, you know, just to show up to work no matter what,
- 30:23like unless you're dead, you still go to work. So like when we
- 30:26all got let go. When the station changed formats last year, I had
- 30:32over thirty days of sick days piled up that I got nothing for same,
- 30:38nothing for in California. We have to pay you out a percentage of that.
- 30:41Yeah, well we don't live in California. Ah. Yeah, we
- 30:45used to have unlimited sick which changed. But what one of the nice things
- 30:49is that our vacation didn't roll over until several years ago. Now it does,
- 30:56which is nice. But also we just like you guys. I mean,
- 30:57we're not closed on Christmas, were not closed on m Okay, we're
- 31:00not closed on President's Day. We're not closed on the fourth of July.
- 31:03We're not you know, so all of that kind of racks up pretty quickly
- 31:06as well. If you work. There's also trade days, and it's all
- 31:11it's all sorts of you know, it's it's it's we're treated well, which
- 31:15is nice that And so what they like to do is when everyone, like
- 31:18when these anchors on at Fox four gone vacation or they get married or birthdays
- 31:23or you know, they lost a tooth, it seems they got to call
- 31:26you to come in and do the early morning anchor desks stuff because you know
- 31:32they're off, you know, gallivanting. So how does how do you like
- 31:36having to shift to that morning show schedule? You know what? It's actually,
- 31:40Um, it's not terrible. So one of the things I will say
- 31:42is that I've been really fortunate over I mean, I've been there for it's
- 31:45going to be twenty years in October, which is insane. And I have
- 31:52done all of the shows. I mean I do good day, I do
- 31:52mid days, I do the five, six, and nine. I've done
- 31:56weekends, I've done weekend mornings. So it's nice. You know, I
- 32:00feel like I'm kind of the only person who does that. Like you would
- 32:04have never seen, you know, Tim Ryan filling in for Steve Eager.
- 32:07You know, um, it just wouldn't happen, right, Um, So
- 32:10I really kind of enjoy that because at that point it would have looked like
- 32:14that Steve Eager's wish expired at midnight. Wow. Wow, Look I'm not
- 32:25you won't lose your job, Steve. That joke is all about perspective.
- 32:30If if if you think that was an ugly slam on Tim Ryan, that's
- 32:34on you. To me, that joke is more about how pretty Steve Eager
- 32:37is. I mean, so pretty. Let's I mean, I have to
- 32:40wear sunglasses when he's on TV and he smiles because his teeth reflect brighter than
- 32:45the sun. I mean Eager, I think he's sixty and he looks great.
- 32:51Really, I mean yeah, yeah, he does that make him?
- 32:57Is he a granddad? Is he a guilt He's definitely a grand factor.
- 33:04I won't make me try to answer. The question is to you Dan,
- 33:07If you think he's a guilt Dan, than he is. Yeah, that
- 33:09is true. Again, that's all about kind of a really question for me.
- 33:13But if you think so, then you know he's got some serious juice.
- 33:19I don't want to know about Steve Eager's juice. Okay, Yeah,
- 33:23anyways, ovulation rates elevate during the nine PM newscast, and this is why
- 33:30Fox four it didn't want Steve coming on the show. Oh God, I'm
- 33:36gonna throw you a life preserver. Okay, I'm gonna throw you a life
- 33:38preserver. So how else? How else has your schedule been so crazy lately?
- 33:44What else have you been up to? Yeah? No, so it's
- 33:45been good. Honestly. I get up at two in the morning, I'm
- 33:47at the station by three. The newscast starts at four, UM, I
- 33:52because I have my regular job that I have to do. Also, I'm
- 33:54really fortunate that they allow me to then do that job, which means I
- 34:00can also be home before my kids even wake up for the day, UM,
- 34:04get them ready, to get them off to school, and then kind
- 34:06of return to work. UM. So it's actually, um, it's it's
- 34:09it's it's been great um. And it's a really nice it's a nice place
- 34:14to visit right like you get the itch scratch. I don't know that I,
- 34:17you know, would want that is my permanent schedule because you know that
- 34:21the sleep situation does become a little cumbersome. But it's it's fun. It's
- 34:24a fun morning. And you know, Shannon and Hannah are both are both
- 34:28super fun to work with. UM. I honestly think that we um.
- 34:31I mean the best stuff is during the commercial breaks. I mean, because
- 34:35we just are like a couple of Yenta's out there, you know, catching
- 34:37up on you know whatever else. So UM, but yeah, no,
- 34:40it's the it's been good. I was just actually doing a charity event with
- 34:45Shannon on UM when Wednesday last week. It was for Reliant Energy. They
- 34:51do a home run derby, So the yend liners are the Dallas Cowboys.
- 34:57Um, that's like what the people show up for. Right before that starts,
- 35:00they have like a media league where all of these media people, um
- 35:05go up in batum. So it was like this year, I don't know,
- 35:08do you know Bree and Ranthus from Sports Illustrated, Um, Shannon,
- 35:14the sports guy from Channel five, the weather guy from Channel eight, whether
- 35:17one of the other meteorologist from URNE eleven Hawkeye was one of the people.
- 35:21Are you not allowed to say the names of personalities other news stations? Like
- 35:23when you say that, like the sports guy at Channel five, do you
- 35:27mean NEWI scrugs, No, well Newie works. I mean a minute,
- 35:30is he still here? Yeah? I got him? Um No, Actually,
- 35:35you know what, So I butchered this guy's name. It took me
- 35:37until like the tenth his tenth swing for someone to like, somebody shouted it
- 35:43enough times that I finally heard it. I don't know why I thought Pat's
- 35:45last name was Doooney. Uh, it's not. Um, it's And I'm
- 35:52so tripped up in my mind about it that I still don't know if it's
- 35:54Donnie or Donnie. UM, I believe it any way, He wons Um,
- 36:00he probably thinks that he probably thinks that you hate him. No,
- 36:05we actually had a nice moment talking about his son and his charity and whatever.
- 36:07Super nice guy. UM. And then the meteorologists from UH eight whether
- 36:14guy Kyle I think his name was UM. Really it just goes by Kyle.
- 36:19But I don't just say that to be shady. But like people were
- 36:22always like, oh, you know, like like so the media all just
- 36:25from KTVT. We were talking about um, you know, being up early,
- 36:29Shannon and I, UM, and I was like, we should give
- 36:30Shannon an extra thousand dollars because she got up so early, and she was
- 36:34the girl was like, I do mornings also, and I was like,
- 36:37oh, I mean I'm either on the air or I'm sleeping, so I
- 36:40don't really tune in, you know, to the other shows to see,
- 36:45you know, like what like who's on the air. You know, it's
- 36:47an a thing to say, Yeah, you have to say, I can't
- 36:52watch, right, I can't watch. Her eyes are all bloodshot, she's
- 36:55shaking because she's overcaffeinated, wishing for an extra thousand dollars you know, Um,
- 37:00yeah, no, but it was good, so I, uh,
- 37:04you know, I I think you're familiar with my sports prowess. I did
- 37:07not that, Um, but I did not, you know. I mean,
- 37:10that's a lot of trauma. Let's let's just call it. I mean
- 37:14that's like, oh god, I mean that's like you're supposed to be hitting
- 37:19the baseball but instead you're taking swings at the meteorologists at other stations. Like
- 37:23I'm supposed to be hitting the baseball, but instead I'm like picking flowers in
- 37:27the outfield. I mean, this is my childhood, right, you know,
- 37:30you know your place is behind a microphone. Oh right, Like let's
- 37:34you know you you you know your skill set and that's that. But what
- 37:37was funny about it was so I didn't realize that I would also be responsible
- 37:42for like color commentary during the home run derby, and there's a lot of
- 37:47downtime, Like there's a lot of filler like between like swinging and the next
- 37:52pitch. And you know what, you found out the hard way. The
- 37:57one thing that's more difficult than playing baseball is talking baseball. Yeah, I
- 38:01mean, and I don't at least it was baseball football. My god,
- 38:05I would have been totally lost, But luckily Doug has made me watch Major
- 38:08League like a thousand times. So I was pretty much holding all of my
- 38:13color commentary. Too bad half that movie you can't say on TV right exactly?
- 38:17You know, swayamous? You know so well, the next time they
- 38:22do something like that and they try to make you do something sports, you
- 38:24give us a call. We'll give you hand. We'll come in there and
- 38:27give you some color commentary and give get a great that very nice jersey they
- 38:30gave you, like a reliant baseball jersey. So I'm feeling pretty special.
- 38:34Um And of course, so I was there on behalf of Grant Haliburton Foundation,
- 38:37which is an amazing charity that deals with team suicide and mental health.
- 38:43UM. So they were kind enough to donate money to them as well,
- 38:45even though I was not one of the people because the media folks who were
- 38:50there, um, you bat and based on the never hits you get and
- 38:52where they end up, you get certain increments of cash for your charity.
- 38:57So it was a pretty cool event. Competition a check. Why do they
- 39:02do that? Why do they tie it to competition? Why not just you
- 39:05know, cut everyone a big ass check, like it's It's always kind of
- 39:07struck on me. It's sad. Like, you know, somebody goes on
- 39:10wheel of Fortune and you know, does horribly and now their charity gets gets
- 39:16you know, less than than the guy who was over there kicking ass on
- 39:20the other side. I know what you mean. He's like, like,
- 39:22if if someone's out there and they're trying to compete and they're they're you know,
- 39:25participating on behalf of the kids from Shiners or Shriners, and that kid
- 39:29from Shriners doesn't get the new arm. Well, everyone did get money for
- 39:34showing up, and then there was kind of money on top of you know,
- 39:37so um yeah, it was a cool and if it was that um
- 39:40where the rough Riders play, which is a really beautiful facility. Um,
- 39:45so it was nice to be able to to be up there and uh in
- 39:47Frisco. That was go ahead, stee, No, that's it. How
- 39:52did you get started with the Grant Haliburton Foundation? By the way, you
- 39:54know that I went to high school with the founder of that, right Amy,
- 39:59with Vanita? Oh well with her daughter Amy. Um yeah, no,
- 40:04yeah, Amy, who is like Alphie help old dark one. Vanita?
- 40:08Um yeah, no, a friend of mine actually does. And I'm
- 40:13going to butcher his title, but I think he does like development for them
- 40:17and he had asked me years ago, Hey, would you m see an
- 40:20event for us, and I was like, yeah, sure, like of
- 40:22course. Um. And I've gotten to know Amy and Vanita and their family
- 40:27Grants um, you know, sister and mom um, over the years and
- 40:31they it is one of the most well organized charities. And it's it's such
- 40:37boots on the ground action. I mean, they are in the schools,
- 40:39they are helping kids, they are helping families there. I mean, it
- 40:44really is amazing. And of course the story about Grant and how he died
- 40:46and you know by you know, by suicide. UM, I mean we
- 40:51just had there. So so I've am seed a bunch of their events.
- 40:54UM. The most one, the one most recently was the Beacon of Hope
- 40:58luncheon and Dak Prescott and Solomon Thomas were the special guests, um, you
- 41:02know, because both of them have you know, mental health stuff in their
- 41:06families. UM. It was great. The sports anchor from CBS eleven was
- 41:10kind of the moderator for that part of the conversation. UM. I think
- 41:15we had like seven hundred people for lunch at the Omni. It was really
- 41:17a beautiful Um. Event and it raised a ton of money. So I've
- 41:22been with them for a long time. Are you worried that Scott Murray is
- 41:24going to take a hit out on you? You know, I haven't seen
- 41:29Scott Murray in a long time. Um, but I see him. I
- 41:34see him like once a week. It eats. He's oh do you he's
- 41:39thinner, but his tu pay is fuller? So wait does so if you're
- 41:43seeing if you're seeing Scott Murray, it eats, he's does eats. He's
- 41:45like need an MC all the time? Is either like announcing people's sandwiches as
- 41:50they're coming through. That's not an MC. That just means you worked there,
- 41:54Scott. I mean talk about people who it's like looking at the sun.
- 41:59I mean you said Steve Eager earlier. I mean I feel like Scott's
- 42:01Scott's he has that, like, you know, the charisma of like a
- 42:06William Shatner and miss congeniality. I mean, you know, I actually I
- 42:12number one, I agree with you. Number two. I actually saw Scott
- 42:14Murray at a at a Blockbuster on two years ago, and and you're right,
- 42:17it really was. It's like, man, he's walking around the store,
- 42:21you know, pointing out Ethernet cables like they just won the swimsuit competition,
- 42:24right, Um, yeah, yeah, he's a he's a good guy
- 42:30and does quite a bit for for charity as well, which is nice.
- 42:32Yeah. So that's that's that where we know we're working on some stuff Raoul
- 42:36as well, He says, Hi, Um, we don't get to spend
- 42:37as much time together right now because of our differing schedules, but all all
- 42:42as well. Uh, it's a real quick trey. Raoul is Steve Novaeo,
- 42:47Steve Noviello's personal photographer. He's he's the one that I work with most
- 42:53often and that I prefer to work with because he's the one that doesn't get
- 42:58to work unless Novaello calls him out of the cave. And he's really funny,
- 43:04Like we just have a really fun time. We spent a lot of
- 43:07time together. It's like having it's like being a cop and having like a
- 43:09partner, you know what I mean. Like you spent a lot of time
- 43:12in the car, a lot of time talking about stuff. I mean,
- 43:15it's it's a pretty you know. Um. And he's he's really funny and
- 43:19he's a good guy. He's a very good dude. Yeah, so you
- 43:22had mentioned I think you went you went to the zoo recently with with your
- 43:25family. Did you bring Raoul along or did you make him stay in the
- 43:30car. No, So this was a field I was shap running a field
- 43:32trip for my son's kindergarten class. And uh, it was great, it
- 43:37was I didn't well. So first of all, I didn't realize it was
- 43:39like when I was a kid, like you went on a field trip and
- 43:42like the whole class hung out together, and they were like several parents there
- 43:45that like made sure nothing out of a hand. So this was like we
- 43:49got as signed a couple of kids each. Um. And not only was
- 43:52it just my son's class, but it was the entire kindergarten. And apparently
- 43:55it was like field trip day at the zoo because they were like hundreds of
- 44:00kids there from all sorts of schools. But it was a good time.
- 44:02Um. And I'll tell you the I mean, in full disclosure. The
- 44:06only thing more annoying than your child asking you to buy the ice cream every
- 44:09five seconds is somebody else's kid asking you about the ice cream. Oh god,
- 44:14other people's kids, Like I don't know, Like I don't know,
- 44:17like I mean for all I know, like I worked the cafeteria line at
- 44:21the school, like I volunteer there. Like it'll come up like you know,
- 44:24no gluten, you know, and the kids got like a peanut butter
- 44:28and jelly sandwich. I'm like, hey, like it says you're not supposed
- 44:30to eat that. And I'll be like, now you're fine, Like I
- 44:32mean eating away child that is not mine right, like I you know,
- 44:37I mean if it was a peanut allergy, then maybe I would be a
- 44:39little bit more. But I was like yeah, I so you know again,
- 44:45So like when a kid's like, oh, will you buy me?
- 44:47You know whatever, I'm like, I don't like it. I don't know
- 44:51if your mom wants you having such Like I'm not your parents. That's not
- 44:53the decision I can make for you. Yeah. Now, was there a
- 44:57did your kids have a favorite animal at the zoo or if favor exhibit?
- 45:00Um, So there's like a play it was really hot. So there was
- 45:05like a playground with water that they really liked. They we did feed the
- 45:07giraffe. We paid the six dollars for a piece of lettuce and fed the
- 45:10giraffe. Uh So they liked that certainly, see did you see the nude
- 45:17uh dinosaur exhibit? We did. We went through the dinosaur exhibit. That
- 45:22was pretty cool about I kept telling you because they were like petting them,
- 45:27which you're not really supposed to do. So I was saying to them that
- 45:30there's one of them that's actually real, and you won't figure it out until
- 45:34you touch the wrong one and it bites your hand off. I love how
- 45:37you parents immediately stopped the petting of the dinosaur, and then at the end
- 45:44they were like, which one was it? Like you said one of them
- 45:46was alive. I don't know. They don't tell the parents either. We
- 45:50it's all a surprise for all of I don't know. I guess you know
- 45:53you should go ask that kid with the one armed, see which one it
- 45:57was? One from Shriner's exactly. Did you did you see the hippo exhibit?
- 46:02You know what? We didn't, although one of the kids was like,
- 46:05I want to see the hippos and I was like, they're not here
- 46:07today. It was so hot. We were like four hours in at this
- 46:12point. I was like, we're we're good, buddy. Oh. I
- 46:15would have should have taken the kids there because then you could explain to the
- 46:17I'm watching the hippo's poop. How that works? Did they have you?
- 46:22Have you differently than other animals? Oh? My gosh. If y'all never
- 46:25seen the so hippo's large, you know, huge animals. They have a
- 46:30little tiny tail and when they poop, that tail goes wild and it looks
- 46:36like, you know, a spreader, like if you were fertilizing your yard.
- 46:38That's what they do with their poop. And that tail goes wild and
- 46:42it just spreads all over the place. It's a fascinating and gross. Are
- 46:45they like a pellet like a deer? Or are they more of Ah?
- 46:51Wow? Is it? Is it more like? What? Okay? Why
- 46:53am I asking this? Is it more like a spray? Yes? Is
- 46:59it like kids in the middle of Hill's kitchen in the summer and like popping
- 47:01a fire extinguisher. It's like if you were ever really hung over in eight
- 47:05taco bell the night before. I know exactly what you mean. I know
- 47:12that all too well. If you're in the treehouse, sweet Dan, O'Malley
- 47:15and Alfie Koy, time now to welcome into the treehouse. Jacqueline from Brooks
- 47:32Plumbing the website Brooks Plumbing Texas dot com one of our brand new sponsors here
- 47:37in the treehouse. Very happy and proud to have you guys, so thank
- 47:40you. The phone number for Brooks Plumbing two one four three six eight thirty
- 47:44eight thirty eight. Two one four three six eight thirty eight thirty eight,
- 47:47and again the website Brooks Plumbing Texas dot com. Hi Jacqueline, Hello,
- 47:52So I was wondering, I think you told me this before. What percentage
- 47:57of homes have a leak and the homeowner just doesn't know about it? Oh?
- 48:02Okay, so there's I don't think that there's a real statistic out there,
- 48:07but in the DFW metroplex, I my assumption, my guestimate would be
- 48:10probably about fifty fifty. And it's actually a really fun story because I just
- 48:15bought a new house for myself in July of last year, and I asked
- 48:20the seller. I said, I really want to take a look at the
- 48:22sewer system specifically, because if you're gonna have a leak in Texas, it's
- 48:25more likely that you've got a sewer leak that you don't know about versus a
- 48:29water leak, because if you had a water leak, your water bell would
- 48:30be high et cetera, et cetera. But so he gave me permission to
- 48:35test the sewer and it came back and there was a leak. Well,
- 48:37there was actually a leak smack dab in the middle of the house. And
- 48:43they were like, well, it's just not possible. It's all PVC,
- 48:45it's already been replaced because it was originally cast iron. I'm like, no,
- 48:49it leaks, and they did not believe it. They got their own
- 48:52company to come out there and take a look at it. Their company confirmed,
- 48:55indeed there was a leak, and we were able to actually negotiate a
- 49:00handful of money off the final sale price of that house. But these these
- 49:04sellers had been in that house, living in it for years, had no
- 49:06idea there was a leak. And most people don't don't find out they've got
- 49:10a leak until all of a sudden there's a backup. You do not want
- 49:14to be ankle deep in sewage. But if you end up ankle deep in
- 49:16sewage, I can fix it. So don't don't let it ruin your day.
- 49:21Yeah, you want you want your andy do frame story to be your
- 49:24idea as opposed to it just kind of happening to you and next thing you
- 49:30know, you're next to a poop fountain. So uh, I don't know
- 49:32if you want to use this on the side of your vans or anything,
- 49:35but avoid the poop fountain called Brooks Plumbing at two one four three six eight
