- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome in to the next round presented by Hard Rock
- 0:02Speaker 1: Bet on Sport and State. Jim Dunaway, Lance Taylor, Ryan Brown,
- 0:06Speaker 1: all the guys behind the glass. If you're new to
- 0:08Speaker 1: the show, you'll meet them as we bring them into
- 0:11Speaker 1: the conversation. Shador has done it, it looks like, at Cleveland.
- 0:15Speaker 1: We'll talk about the winners and losers of the weekend
- 0:18Speaker 1: in the NFL coming up. Bad news for one Columbia,
- 0:24Speaker 1: great news for another Columbia. We'll get to that coming
- 0:27Speaker 1: up in the show. One's high school, one used to
- 0:29Speaker 1: steal my pennies. For cassette tapes back in the 70s.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Cassette tapes? No, actually the 80s.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:35Speaker 1: The Columbia Clearinghouse. Oh, I remember. We'll get to that
- 0:38Speaker 1: coming up. But if you've been with our show for
- 0:42Speaker 1: a long, long time, TV sheets are out for week
- 0:45Speaker 1: zero slash one, and it's game week for college football.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I loved seeing this when I walked in today, and
- 0:53Speaker 3: it was sitting right here at my spot.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I was very excited about that. And the best thing
- 0:57Speaker 1: on the printed version, you get the windows. Week zero
- 1:02Speaker 1: lines up, Lance, where you get North Carolina TCU in
- 1:05Speaker 1: the early window, NC State, Virginia, San Jose State, USC,
- 1:10Speaker 1: Sneaky Good, Jack State, North Dakota State.
- 1:12Speaker 4: In the afternoon.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Sneaky Good. Oh, look, there are Hawaii, Stanford.
- 1:16Speaker 5: Yeah, Stanford, five-and-a-half point favorite right now, so you've got
- 1:18Speaker 5: a one possession at least on paper. The same, North
- 1:21Speaker 5: Dakota State, seven-and-a-half, Virginia, five-and-a-half, TCU, seven-and-a-half. UNLV 5.5. There
- 1:27Speaker 5: should be some really good games on that Saturday. Selfishly,
- 1:31Speaker 5: I wish USC was the late game because I really,
- 1:35Speaker 5: really want to focus on what I believe, and I've
- 1:37Speaker 5: said this for almost months now, the winner of NC
- 1:41Speaker 5: State Virginia has kind of got a path to being
- 1:45Speaker 5: that second.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Team along with Miami and the ACC.
- 1:47Speaker 5: I mean, one of the big questions, power for football
- 1:49Speaker 5: right now, who is the second best in the ACC?
- 1:52Speaker 2: It's wide open.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Well, it's supposed to be in Brazil. I don't know
- 1:55Speaker 1: if I said it correctly. Is that where it's going
- 1:58Speaker 1: to be? It's going to be in Charlottesville, Virginia now.
- 2:00Speaker 1: It's a home game. Makes more sense to be in Charlottesville.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Makes much more sense. Makes it tougher on NC State, too.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I don't know how the Wahoos get crazy at Virginia.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Their attendance is never amazing. I can't imagine a game
- 2:12Speaker 3: that was not originally supposed to be there. I don't
- 2:14Speaker 3: know if class is in session this Saturday or not.
- 2:17Speaker 3: I went to a game there, Auburn and Virginia, back
- 2:19Speaker 3: in the day. I think Damian Craig was the Auburn quarterback.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I remember that. It was a pretty good atmosphere, and
- 2:24Speaker 1: I think it was a Thursday night. It was a
- 2:26Speaker 1: Thursday night, yeah. Thursday night, back when ESPN had good
- 2:29Speaker 1: Thursday night games on.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I thought that was when Ben Leard was the quarterback.
- 2:34Speaker 5: I know there was a Thursday night against Virginia, because
- 2:36Speaker 5: I remember Ben getting up and looking through the ear
- 2:38Speaker 5: hole on a Thursday night.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I remember that specifically. That's what you remember? I do, yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 1: But I think this was Damian Craig, because I think
- 2:45Speaker 1: he threw a, on-the-move bomb to win it for Auburn
- 2:48Speaker 1: back in the day.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Weird home-and-home there.
- 2:51Speaker 1: That was.
- 2:52Speaker 5: But I think we're sleeping on Virginia. The first three
- 2:55Speaker 5: years under Tony Elliott, 11 total wins. Last year, 11 wins.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Had every opportunity to get to a college football playoff.
- 3:02Speaker 5: And Bo Perbula taking over at quarterback. I don't think
- 3:05Speaker 5: there's going to be much of a drop from Chandler Morris.
- 3:07Speaker 5: You've got more production in the Power Four coming back
- 3:09Speaker 5: for Virginia than anyone else. So I think we're sleeping
- 3:12Speaker 5: a little bit on Virginia. And NC State with their schedule.
- 3:14Speaker 1: And then that night game, you mentioned Memphis and UNLV
- 3:17Speaker 1: there in Vegas. And that one has group of six
- 3:21Speaker 1: playoff implications out of the gate.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I mean, Boise gets Oregon in week one. I think
- 3:25Speaker 3: most people's, I think the majority favorite for the group
- 3:28Speaker 3: five rep is Boise. However, Memphis and Boise play. So
- 3:32Speaker 3: if Memphis can get a win, what a tough start
- 3:34Speaker 3: for Charles. So if you got to play UNLV and Boise,
- 3:37Speaker 3: but if Memphis can get the win over UNLV and
- 3:39Speaker 3: then pull the shocker on Boise, Memphis is in the
- 3:41Speaker 3: driver's seat for the college football playoff.
- 3:43Speaker 2: It sounds crazy. Well, I guess there's only one national champion.
- 3:45Speaker 5: I would feel better if you gave me five options
- 3:50Speaker 5: for the group five than five options for the national championship.
- 3:56Speaker 5: Because I would definitely go Boise. I would put Navy
- 3:59Speaker 5: in there. I would put UNLV in there. I think
- 4:02Speaker 5: I probably would put Memphis in there. I mean, what
- 4:05Speaker 5: do you think would be easier, telling me right now
- 4:07Speaker 5: who that group six rep is going to be or
- 4:10Speaker 5: who actually is going to win the national championship?
- 4:12Speaker 1: There used to be a show called Name That Tune.
- 4:14Speaker 6: Yep.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I feel like I could name that tune in two teams.
- 4:19Speaker 1: For the group of six. So those that didn't watch.
- 4:21Speaker 1: You said five. I think I could do it in two.
- 4:23Speaker 1: You go back and forth.
- 4:24Speaker 3: I can name that tune in five notes. I can
- 4:25Speaker 3: name that tune in four notes. And then sooner or later.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Brown saw me in a bar in Dallas.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I mean, it was.
- 4:32Speaker 3: He called the song before it came on. Lance was like,
- 4:35Speaker 3: I can't even remember the song now. He's like, they're
- 4:37Speaker 3: going to play in the club. And then, I mean, boom,
- 4:40Speaker 3: in the club starts. I'm like, how did you do that?
- 4:43Speaker 3: I mean, the song had not started.
- 4:44Speaker 2: How did you do that?
- 4:44Speaker 5: But you know, I mean, when you hear that first
- 4:46Speaker 5: note on certain songs, you can immediately pull it.
- 4:49Speaker 2: As soon as the note hit, we both look at
- 4:50Speaker 2: each other like, how did he do that?
- 4:52Speaker 5: I can't believe Jamie Foxx hosted that show, but what
- 4:54Speaker 5: was it called?
- 4:55Speaker 2: Was it Shazam?
- 4:56Speaker 7: Beat Shazam.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Beat Shazam. Good show.
- 4:58Speaker 3: But some of those people, same thing. I mean, you
- 5:00Speaker 3: would hear one just. So you think you can name
- 5:03Speaker 3: it in two notes? I think two teams.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Two teams. It is Boise State. It is Navy. Navy.
- 5:09Speaker 2: You used to be able to do this with a
- 5:10Speaker 2: national champion.
- 5:11Speaker 1: That's true.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Name it. It's to your point. It's gotten really difficult.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 5:15Speaker 5: I think Navy's going to be really good. It looks
- 5:17Speaker 5: like they're going to rotate quarterbacks. They do have to
- 5:20Speaker 5: play Notre Dame, but they can go 11-1, and.
- 5:23Speaker 2: They obviously get there.
- 5:26Speaker 3: You're willing to go forward without Memphis. You're willing to
- 5:28Speaker 3: go forward without sexy New Mexico.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yes. You're willing to go forward without..
- 5:33Speaker 5: Anybody in the Sun Belt or Mac. Anybody in the
- 5:35Speaker 5: Sun Belt or Mac.
- 5:36Speaker 1: UNLV. I can go forward with all that. It's Boise
- 5:39Speaker 1: State and Navy for me. Navy I don't think will
- 5:41Speaker 1: lose anywhere except Notre Dame. And 11-1, then they go
- 5:47Speaker 1: to the American Conference Championship. I guess technically 10-1. They
- 5:51Speaker 1: go to the American Conference Championship before they play Army.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Just in the final year, probably of 12 teams in
- 5:58Speaker 1: the playoffs before we expand this thing, we need at
- 6:00Speaker 1: least that one awkward– of Navy being in the playoffs
- 6:05Speaker 1: on Selection Sunday and then still having to play Army afterwards.
- 6:11Speaker 1: We need that one time.
- 6:12Speaker 2: We need that just because that's college football, right?
- 6:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 2: How dumb is this? Well, that's college football.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Oh, okay. Sorry. And then Army upsets Navy? Yeah, I know, yeah.
- 6:21Speaker 1: But Navy's still in the playoffs. Does that count? No,
- 6:23Speaker 1: it did not count. That's what we need.
- 6:24Speaker 5: You know, it would be amazing if North Dakota State
- 6:26Speaker 5: in year one makes that transition and they ended up
- 6:29Speaker 5: being your group six.
- 6:30Speaker 6: Hmm.
- 6:32Speaker 2: I mean, that's a healthy favorite against Jacksonville State.
- 6:34Speaker 1: How big is it? Seven and a half. Seven and
- 6:36Speaker 1: a half? That is in Fargo, though. And they are
- 6:39Speaker 1: eligible to be the group of six. They don't have
- 6:42Speaker 1: to do what they did as early as last year,
- 6:45Speaker 1: have to sit out a year or two in your
- 6:48Speaker 1: transition up to Division I football. North Dakota State and
- 6:51Speaker 1: Sacramento State have received the buy so they can play
- 6:55Speaker 1: their way into bowl games. are, if need be, into
- 6:58Speaker 1: the playoffs. Sac State's playing in the MAAC, I believe,
- 7:01Speaker 1: this year. That is correct.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Which is insane when you start looking at the MAAC.
- 7:06Speaker 3: They're paying to travel for the teams to come out
- 7:08Speaker 3: there and play them, if I remember correctly.
- 7:10Speaker 5: They are, but geographics don't matter anymore. Geography doesn't matter anymore.
- 7:19Speaker 5: except in the MAAC until Sacramento State. It was one
- 7:21Speaker 5: of the few conferences where it actually..
- 7:23Speaker 3: The MAAC was still Mid-American and then Sac State joined
- 7:26Speaker 3: and now we're not even Mid-American anymore.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Later in the show, we will look at a planet
- 7:32Speaker 1: and college football and combine the two galaxies. That's coming
- 7:35Speaker 1: up later in the show. You're watching the next round
- 7:39Speaker 1: by Hard Rock Bet on Sport and State. Big news
- 7:42Speaker 1: in college football. We had starters named at three SEC schools,
- 7:47Speaker 1: a couple of other Power Conference schools and a couple
- 7:51Speaker 1: of G6 schools. Let's jump into that. First, the biggest one,
- 7:55Speaker 1: the biggest playoff contender that named a starter over the
- 7:58Speaker 1: weekend was Alabama and Keelan Russell getting that job over
- 8:01Speaker 1: Austin Mack. Surprise level not very high. He was the
- 8:05Speaker 1: guy expected. I would say instantly every Alabama fan I've
- 8:08Speaker 1: seen along the way energized. by this announcement.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Well look the most upside is Keelan Russell I mean
- 8:15Speaker 5: we've been talking about this for the last couple of
- 8:16Speaker 5: years he seemed to be the future of Alabama football
- 8:20Speaker 5: and you know I think more surprising is Austin Mack
- 8:23Speaker 5: keeping the competition this close and I was talking to
- 8:26Speaker 5: somebody yesterday about and they're like man I feel so
- 8:28Speaker 5: bad for Austin Mack and I was like he's still
- 8:30Speaker 5: probably making seven figures he's got a beautiful girlfriend on campus.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Has his degree he's graduated he's.
- 8:36Speaker 5: A snap away from playing I mean he could be
- 8:38Speaker 5: a Mack Castle situation where Just because of his size
- 8:42Speaker 5: and arm strength, maybe somebody in the NFL without him
- 8:44Speaker 5: ever getting a start takes a shot at him.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Let's use this as an example. If for some reason
- 8:50Speaker 1: Russell goes down, Austin Mack comes in, I don't feel
- 8:55Speaker 1: like Alabama's season is off the rails. Do Darian Mensah
- 8:59Speaker 1: in Miami for me. Who was their backup, Jim? That's
- 9:01Speaker 1: my point.
- 9:02Speaker 5: A team we'll talk about today where Miami's only really
- 9:06Speaker 5: relevant game outside of Clemson is Notre Dame.
- 9:09Speaker 1: C.J.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Carr goes down.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Good night.
- 9:10Speaker 5: I mean, Mitch, he's on to Kentucky. I mean, with
- 9:12Speaker 5: a portal now for Austin Mack to be that loyal
- 9:15Speaker 5: to this coaching staff and look, and I know he's
- 9:17Speaker 5: been compensated. But for him to roll the dice and
- 9:19Speaker 5: stay there is a benefit, a luxury for Alabama right now.
- 9:23Speaker 5: I'm sure Lane Kiffin will probably try to get him
- 9:25Speaker 5: in the portal. He'll need to sign with the Browns first. Listen,
- 9:29Speaker 5: I believe you said that perfectly.
- 9:32Speaker 1: He's been loyal to DeBoer and that coaching staff, but
- 9:35Speaker 1: he's been compensated. He probably could have been compensated anywhere.
- 9:41Speaker 1: So not to underestimate or underplay the fact that he's
- 9:45Speaker 1: been loyal. And I think that's one reason why this–
- 9:48Speaker 1: This quarterback battle played out the way it did. We
- 9:50Speaker 1: mentioned this a little bit on Friday, Brownie, but this Lance,
- 9:53Speaker 1: it's almost like a family member to DeBoer. Had to
- 9:56Speaker 1: be a hard conversation. Yeah, because this kid left high
- 9:58Speaker 1: school early. to go to Washington declared early had left
- 10:02Speaker 1: a year of high school on the table and then
- 10:05Speaker 1: you know remember I don't I don't think Kalen DeBoer's
- 10:08Speaker 1: family Ryan Grubb didn't come with Kalen DeBoer from Seattle Austin.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Mack did though right and I do think for Kalen
- 10:14Speaker 5: DeBoer And just bringing up LSU again, Lane Kiffin treats
- 10:19Speaker 5: everything like a business, like heart of darkness. On the
- 10:23Speaker 5: other side, I really believe these decisions are difficult personally
- 10:27Speaker 5: for a guy like Kalen DeBoer. I mean, we know
- 10:28Speaker 5: him a little bit. We've gotten to know him over
- 10:30Speaker 5: the last three years. And I do think that this
- 10:33Speaker 5: is really difficult for him to sit down and tell
- 10:35Speaker 5: Austin Mack, hey, we're going with Russell here.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it had to be a difficult decision,
- 10:39Speaker 3: but you weren't with us. Was it Thursday that Matt
- 10:42Speaker 3: Wyatt was on? And I thought Matt Wyatt laid this
- 10:44Speaker 3: out pretty well. He's like, if you're an experienced quarterback,
- 10:47Speaker 3: you know the decision well before it's announced. Not because
- 10:49Speaker 3: anybody's told you, but because their actions have told you. Like,
- 10:53Speaker 3: I mean, basically what Matt said was, Austin Mack is
- 10:56Speaker 3: going to know he's not the starter before any coach
- 10:58Speaker 3: ever tells him. He's like, you pick up on the cues.
- 11:02Speaker 3: You just notice the other guy getting more reps. You
- 11:05Speaker 3: notice they're doing things with the other guy they're not
- 11:07Speaker 3: doing with you. I believe that 99% of the time.
- 11:09Speaker 3: I think Austin Mack, though, he's educated enough and knows
- 11:12Speaker 3: this staff well enough.
- 11:13Speaker 5: I know we will get to breaking news in the
- 11:14Speaker 5: NFL in a minute. I think this is the 1%,
- 11:17Speaker 5: of course, with a dysfunctional franchise where you probably don't
- 11:20Speaker 5: get the telltale signs.
- 11:21Speaker 3: But I think Austin Mack, before Kalen DeBoer or Ryan
- 11:25Speaker 3: Grubb or Brian Ellis, whoever was the one that broke
- 11:28Speaker 3: the news to him, before they had to sit him down,
- 11:30Speaker 3: I would imagine Austin Mack already knew. I have lost
- 11:32Speaker 3: this job to Keelan Russell. And so you said Alabama
- 11:37Speaker 3: fans are excited. I was just going to shock you
- 11:39Speaker 3: guys where I was when the news broke Saturday.
- 11:42Speaker 1: On the golf course.
- 11:43Speaker 3: And in my foursome were two Bama fans and an
- 11:46Speaker 3: Auburn fan. The two Bama fans threw the roof.
- 11:48Speaker 1: It sounds like you're starting a bad joke. On the
- 11:52Speaker 1: golf course, two Bama fans and an Auburn fan.
- 11:55Speaker 3: The Auburn fan actually made the announcement. He got the
- 11:57Speaker 3: alert on his phone. He goes, ah, Keelan Russell... Name
- 11:59Speaker 3: starter at Alabama. And the Alabama fans got genuinely excited.
- 12:02Speaker 3: And the Auburn fan asked me, he's like, do you
- 12:06Speaker 3: think it was that close of a battle? And I said, actually,
- 12:09Speaker 3: I think this shows you how much separation there was.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Because I think if it was anywhere close, anywhere close,
- 12:17Speaker 3: they might go... Let me just say it this way.
- 12:20Speaker 3: If Austin Mack had any lead, they would not have
- 12:24Speaker 3: gone Keelan Russell just to keep him around, I don't believe.
- 12:26Speaker 3: I don't believe you play that way anymore in college football.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Well, a lot of people believe this would go into
- 12:30Speaker 2: East Carolina.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:31Speaker 5: And we would see these guys probably play a half
- 12:34Speaker 5: each and then maybe make a decision before you go
- 12:36Speaker 5: on the road in Lexington against Kentucky in week two.
- 12:40Speaker 5: I don't think a lot of teams, whether it's the
- 12:42Speaker 5: NFL or college football, want to do this anymore. I
- 12:44Speaker 5: think they want to have that established guy Like how
- 12:47Speaker 5: many quarterback battles do we have going on in the Power.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Four right now?
- 12:50Speaker 1: Well, we had another one settled in the SEC, but
- 12:52Speaker 1: one more note, two of them actually in the SEC,
- 12:55Speaker 1: one more note, you're looking at Keelan Russell. I know
- 12:57Speaker 1: we've all heard things from camp, the people that get
- 12:59Speaker 1: to see practices and maybe conversations with coaches and such.
- 13:04Speaker 1: The one thing I keep hearing about Russell is when
- 13:07Speaker 1: the play breaks down, when it doesn't go as scripted,
- 13:11Speaker 1: he's the best at saving the play. Well, and that's
- 13:14Speaker 1: what you need with this unknown at offensive line. I
- 13:17Speaker 1: was about to say, Lance, tell me how many times
- 13:20Speaker 1: last year watching Alabama did Ty Simpson have to bail
- 13:23Speaker 1: them out?
- 13:23Speaker 5: Well, they gave up 32 sacks, and it probably would
- 13:26Speaker 5: have been in the 40s if it wasn't for Simpson
- 13:28Speaker 5: and his escapability. I saw it again this past weekend
- 13:30Speaker 5: against the Saints in a play that broke down, and
- 13:32Speaker 5: he's got really good footwork, and he's able to extend
- 13:35Speaker 5: those plays. Russell's going to be next level because once
- 13:38Speaker 5: he extends the plays, then he actually can move the
- 13:41Speaker 5: chains and do some really athletic things that Alabama hasn't
- 13:44Speaker 5: seen at the quarterback position. I guess you saw Bryce Young,
- 13:48Speaker 5: but Bryce Young was just so small. You never wanted
- 13:51Speaker 5: him to even be in the mix to take a hit.
- 13:53Speaker 3: I think you saw the running ability, what you're talking about,
- 13:57Speaker 3: on steroids with Jalen Milrow. I'm not saying Milrow's on steroids.
- 14:01Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 14:03Speaker 5: If you guys watched last night, but the first play
- 14:05Speaker 5: that broke down When Milrow was in, he took it
- 14:08Speaker 5: 15 yards.
- 14:08Speaker 3: But can Russell be a more consistent passer than Milrow?
- 14:13Speaker 3: That was the thing that Alabama fans just drove them
- 14:15Speaker 3: crazy about. Milrow, he could play the first half against
- 14:18Speaker 3: Georgia and be the best player in America.
- 14:20Speaker 1: That's the comp, though, I keep hearing is taller, stronger
- 14:25Speaker 1: Bryce Young.
- 14:27Speaker 3: I would rather have that because Bryce Young is one
- 14:29Speaker 3: of the most accurate passers we've ever seen.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I doubt Mike.
- 14:33Speaker 3: I'll need to see it to believe that his accuracy
- 14:35Speaker 3: will approach Bryce Young's.
- 14:37Speaker 2: That would be shocking. I will be shocked at that.
- 14:39Speaker 2: But if that is the case, look out. You might
- 14:42Speaker 2: have a Heisman finalist this year.
- 14:45Speaker 5: Other fan bases laugh, roll their eyes when you say that,
- 14:48Speaker 5: but is it going to shock you guys at all
- 14:49Speaker 5: if Keelan Russell comes in and he's one of the
- 14:51Speaker 5: top two or three quarterbacks in the SEC? Wouldn't surprise
- 14:54Speaker 5: me just based on the track record of Keelan DeBoer
- 14:57Speaker 5: with quarterbacks. Nobody saw Ty Simpson going out performing at
- 15:00Speaker 5: the level he did without an elite receiver, without a
- 15:03Speaker 5: 500-plus yard running back with a shaky offensive line, and
- 15:07Speaker 5: he ends up being the second quarterback selected in the
- 15:10Speaker 5: first round.
- 15:10Speaker 2: This past May.
- 15:11Speaker 1: You see this Hard Rock Bet logo that floats around
- 15:13Speaker 1: behind you here? Part of making future bets is timing.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Future bet to win, I don't have the odds in
- 15:21Speaker 1: front of me, future bet to win the Heisman for
- 15:24Speaker 1: Keelan Russell.
- 15:26Speaker 2: I would say it's 50-1.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Would have been smarter two weeks ago than it probably
- 15:30Speaker 1: will be right now or after the game started. Back
- 15:33Speaker 1: when Furman told us he really liked that play, this
- 15:37Speaker 1: was several weeks ago, when Furman was like, one play
- 15:39Speaker 1: I like for the Heisman is Keelan Russell. And his
- 15:43Speaker 1: point was, I think he's going to win the starting job,
- 15:46Speaker 1: and when are you going to get Alabama's starting quarterback
- 15:48Speaker 1: at that number? At the time, I think, was it.
- 15:51Speaker 6: 40-1, 50-1?
- 15:52Speaker 2: Well, he was only 28-1.
- 15:53Speaker 5: I don't know if this was four days ago, so
- 15:56Speaker 5: I don't know if they had already figured in that
- 15:58Speaker 5: Russell was good.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I would assume that they've got him as the starter
- 16:01Speaker 1: here at 28-1.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Yeah, so I think at the time Furman was talking
- 16:04Speaker 3: about it, it was bigger than that, though, 40 or 50-1,
- 16:06Speaker 3: and that was his point. Like, I think Russell's going
- 16:09Speaker 3: to win the job. You may as well take a
- 16:10Speaker 3: flyer now because you'll never get him at this number again.
- 16:12Speaker 1: That's right. Timing is everything. Um, before we take our
- 16:15Speaker 1: first break today, uh, Arkansas names, KJ Jackson, their starter,
- 16:20Speaker 1: Tennessee goes with the young freshman phase on Brandon.
- 16:23Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 16:24Speaker 3: I saw this, uh, on three reporting it this morning. Um,
- 16:28Speaker 3: This is fascinating.
- 16:30Speaker 1: You just kept hearing from Tennessee camp that Faison Brandon
- 16:34Speaker 1: has edged ahead, has edged ahead, has edged ahead. I
- 16:37Speaker 1: don't know.
- 16:38Speaker 3: I'm trying to take myself back to the spring and
- 16:42Speaker 3: how we handicapped this race. I know it was a
- 16:44Speaker 3: very close race, but I don't know that I thought
- 16:46Speaker 3: Brandon was going to be the winner in this race
- 16:48Speaker 3: going back to the spring.
- 16:49Speaker 5: Well, the interesting thing here, I mean, Heupel's offense is, like,
- 16:53Speaker 5: people don't realize how productive the offense was last year.
- 16:57Speaker 5: And the two best Heupel teams were Hendon Hooker in 2022,
- 17:02Speaker 5: where he threw two interceptions, and then the playoff team
- 17:05Speaker 5: two years ago in 2024 with Nico, where he only
- 17:08Speaker 5: threw five picks. If you can limit the turnovers with
- 17:12Speaker 5: Deshaun Bishop running the football and now with Jim Knowles' defense,
- 17:15Speaker 5: Tennessee could be one of the big surprise teams, but
- 17:17Speaker 5: it's going to be about Brandon Hogan not turning the
- 17:19Speaker 5: football over.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Yeah, that offense at high-pull runs, with that run game,
- 17:25Speaker 1: if Brandon can prevent the young mistakes, early starter mistakes,
- 17:29Speaker 1: and create some wow plays, that's what Tennessee had a
- 17:35Speaker 1: couple years ago when they made a playoff run.
- 17:37Speaker 3: I was looking at, for those that have not seen him,
- 17:39Speaker 3: I was looking at his recruiting profile. First of all,
- 17:42Speaker 3: 36 games as a starter in high school, 35-1. You
- 17:45Speaker 3: love that stat.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Number two..
- 17:49Speaker 3: They do a comp, a player comp, Geno Smith. That's
- 17:53Speaker 3: who they compare Faison Brandon to, the player comp. They
- 17:56Speaker 3: say the guy he reminds us of, Geno Smith.
- 17:58Speaker 5: Okay, I'll take Geno Smith and Dana Holgerson's West Virginia offense.
- 18:01Speaker 1: That's right, yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 5: And I do think that the Jets are going to
- 18:03Speaker 5: be a little improved with Geno this year. I mean,
- 18:05Speaker 5: he wasn't bad for the Seahawks a couple of years ago,
- 18:09Speaker 5: was terrible last year with that awful Raiders offensive line.
- 18:12Speaker 5: Do you guys think that people realize– that Hypo had
- 18:16Speaker 5: the number one offense in the SEC, not only in
- 18:18Speaker 5: total offense last year, but in scoring offense.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Last year?
- 18:22Speaker 1: Last year. Jim is surprised. Oh, I did not know that.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I would be surprised.
- 18:25Speaker 3: I would have said they were the number one scoring
- 18:27Speaker 3: offense in the SEC last year. I would have guessed
- 18:29Speaker 3: Ole Miss.
- 18:29Speaker 1: If we were at a party right now playing a
- 18:32Speaker 1: drinking game.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I could have got you on that one.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Two truths and a lie. I would have called that
- 18:36Speaker 1: a lie right there.
- 18:37Speaker 5: Yeah, total offense, and they average right at 40 points
- 18:40Speaker 5: per game, 39.7. Number two. Ole Miss was number three, Brown.
- 18:44Speaker 5: Do you know who number two was? This might surprise
- 18:45Speaker 5: you as well. Quarterback is now gone.
- 18:51Speaker 3: I was going to say that.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Quarterback is now gone. Who was it?
- 18:58Speaker 2: Same state.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Vanderbilt. Wow. Wait a minute.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Vandy was the number two?
- 19:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 19:02Speaker 1: It's like two troops in a line. It's your old basketball.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Flip back over.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:07Speaker 5: 38.4 points per game last year for Pavia and that
- 19:10Speaker 5: Beck offense.
- 19:11Speaker 1: LT would be like, I stole a driver's seat headrest
- 19:17Speaker 1: out of an Uber. I have broken a bottle of
- 19:21Speaker 1: vodka over a table in the VIP area.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I shot a shotgun.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Through a floor. Tennessee led the SEC in offense last year. Oh,
- 19:31Speaker 1: that's a lie. That's a lie.
- 19:34Speaker 2: I did live the first two. Less points per game
- 19:37Speaker 2: in conference, Mississippi State or Alabama.
- 19:40Speaker 1: By you saying it, I'm going to say Alabama. I mean,
- 19:42Speaker 1: Mississippi State, 30.3, and Alabama, 29.5. Offense was not the problem.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Quick break here.
- 19:49Speaker 1: The other starters into the NFL when we come back.
- 19:52Speaker 1: But big news there in college football, which blends with
- 19:56Speaker 1: the NFL these days. I mean, you can go to
- 19:57Speaker 1: the NFL, play a couple exhibition games, and come back
- 20:00Speaker 1: to college, maybe. We'll get to all that. And game
- 20:03Speaker 1: day officially announced for week three, surprising nobody, all coming up.
- 20:06Speaker 1: This is the next round presented by Hard Rock Bet
- 20:10Speaker 1: on Sport and State. Back with you on the next
- 20:13Speaker 1: round presented by Hard Rock Bet on Sport and State.
- 20:16Speaker 1: The other starters named Browning. Rutgers, familiar name in the
- 20:21Speaker 1: SEC for Alabama fans. Dylan Lonergan has won the Rutgers job.
- 20:26Speaker 1: He was at Alabama as a backup and then Boston
- 20:29Speaker 1: College as a starter, and he lost his job there.
- 20:32Speaker 1: But he's going to be the QB1 at Rutgers. Another
- 20:36Speaker 1: familiar name, Max Johnson, is the starting quarterback at Georgia Southern.
- 20:41Speaker 1: You're 12 for him? He has won the starting job
- 20:44Speaker 1: at times at LSU, Texas A & M, North Carolina,
- 20:47Speaker 1: and now he's.
- 20:47Speaker 5: At Georgia Southern. I got this this morning. You guys
- 20:49Speaker 5: are going to love this. And this is like the
- 20:51Speaker 5: graphic of the day, and I need to send this
- 20:53Speaker 5: to Scott.
- 20:55Speaker 1: How about this?
- 20:57Speaker 5: True stat, Max Johnson has been in college football for
- 20:59Speaker 5: so long, he played for Orgeron in his last year
- 21:02Speaker 5: at LSU, Jimbo Fisher in his last year at A & M,
- 21:06Speaker 5: and Mack Brown in his last year at UNC.
- 21:07Speaker 1: That's fact. That's impossible.
- 21:10Speaker 2: And now he's with our man Clay Helton.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Good luck, Clay. Clay needs to win. It could be
- 21:14Speaker 1: his last year at Georgia Southern.
- 21:16Speaker 2: That is crazy.
- 21:19Speaker 1: It could have been last year for Bill Belichick at
- 21:21Speaker 1: North Carolina, last year the way they performed. They kept
- 21:24Speaker 1: him around. South Florida. Michael Van Buren, who at one
- 21:29Speaker 1: point started last year at LSU, is now the starter
- 21:32Speaker 1: at USL.
- 21:32Speaker 2: It was at Mississippi State before that.
- 21:35Speaker 1: And then some guy named Billy Edwards is at North Carolina.
- 21:38Speaker 1: He was at Maryland and then had won the Wisconsin
- 21:41Speaker 1: job and then got hurt before the season started last year.
- 21:46Speaker 1: And he's the starter at North Carolina.
- 21:48Speaker 5: That's going to be like for the true, and this
- 21:50Speaker 5: could be like a diehard college football game one day.
- 21:53Speaker 5: Like if you could name every school certain players have
- 21:56Speaker 5: been at.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Seems impossible.
- 21:58Speaker 3: They're all hoping that'll be a perfect 10 for them.
- 22:00Speaker 3: The name says it, perfect 10 mortgage. You apply in

- 23:04Speaker 1: Coming up next segment, fifth grade science and college football
- 23:08Speaker 1: combined with a little Big Bang Theory. That's coming up
- 23:11Speaker 1: in our next segment, something Lance brought to the table.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Right here, though, winners and losers over the NFL weekend,
- 23:18Speaker 1: week two of the exhibition season. And in Cleveland, Cleveland
- 23:23Speaker 1: fans were booing Deshaun Watson nonstop. basically like he was
- 23:29Speaker 1: the visiting basketball guard who had transferred away from him.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Every time he touched the ball, they were booing. And
- 23:35Speaker 1: it looks like Shador Sanders has won that job in Cleveland.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Not so fast. This is crazy.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Sadly, I watched that game in the pool this past weekend.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Because I had the Browns minus the points.
- 23:52Speaker 5: I was hoping because of the quarterback competition, both quarterbacks
- 23:54Speaker 5: would play well. It got so bad in the first
- 23:56Speaker 5: half when Shador was in there. There was a pass
- 24:00Speaker 5: interference that kept the drive going where it would have
- 24:03Speaker 5: been a fourth down where they would have kicked the
- 24:04Speaker 5: field goal. I didn't want the pass interference because I
- 24:06Speaker 5: wanted the field goal. Of course, the next play throws
- 24:07Speaker 5: an interception. That's how bad the quarterback play was.
- 24:11Speaker 2: And Deshaun was just as bad. But Deshaun comes out.
- 24:14Speaker 5: And talks about how off-putting the crowd is booing him,
- 24:17Speaker 5: and the last time he was on the field in
- 24:19Speaker 5: 2024 when he tore his ACL, they booed him.
- 24:22Speaker 1: They're booing because you have held this organization hostage.
- 24:26Speaker 2: You have. $ 200- plus million.
- 24:27Speaker 3: The fans hate him, and I think he hates the fans.
- 24:30Speaker 3: You watched that post-game news conference.
- 24:32Speaker 2: He said, this fan base.
- 24:33Speaker 1: This fan base.
- 24:34Speaker 3: And I think the question essentially was, They're booing you
- 24:39Speaker 3: because you're playing poorly, but if you felt sporty, and
- 24:41Speaker 3: he basically said, you mean like when they were cheering
- 24:44Speaker 3: when I tore my ACL? That kind of support? I mean,
- 24:46Speaker 3: he hates that fan base, and they hate him. This
- 24:49Speaker 3: is as bad a quarterback situation as you can get.
- 24:51Speaker 5: This shows you how bad the Browns organization is, how
- 24:54Speaker 5: dysfunctional it is, because Todd Monken in year one, you
- 24:57Speaker 5: can't go with Deshaun Watson. Deshaun Watson probably is the
- 25:01Speaker 5: better of the two options, but it is very, very
- 25:04Speaker 5: close if you watch two preseason games.
- 25:07Speaker 2: And to now have.
- 25:08Speaker 5: Your starting quarterback, at least they're on the road against
- 25:10Speaker 5: Jacksonville in week one, to basically be calling out your
- 25:13Speaker 5: fan base, it's going to be impossible for these proud
- 25:16Speaker 5: Cleveland fans. And I say that, and I'll be in
- 25:19Speaker 5: all seriousness, it is a proud fan base that just
- 25:22Speaker 5: doesn't get results. But for them to have to go
- 25:25Speaker 5: out there and try to cheer for Deshaun now after
- 25:28Speaker 5: this division, I just don't get it. I thought there
- 25:31Speaker 5: was a better chance to show Watson wouldn't be a
- 25:34Speaker 5: Cleveland Brown this week. I mean, I guess there's not
- 25:36Speaker 5: much you can do with him because you've got to
- 25:38Speaker 5: pay him anybody in any way, and nobody else is
- 25:40Speaker 5: going to pick this up. But for him to be
- 25:42Speaker 5: the starting quarterback, it just blows me away. But it
- 25:44Speaker 5: shows you how bad Shador is, too. Yeah, it shows
- 25:46Speaker 5: you how bad I am at picking things. I thought
- 25:50Speaker 5: Deshaun Watson was going to win the starting job. And
- 25:52Speaker 5: then I saw the highlights from the game. I didn't
- 25:55Speaker 5: watch the game, but I saw the highlights from the
- 25:56Speaker 5: game and the booing and stuff, and I.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Was like, well, you can't play him.
- 25:59Speaker 5: Oh, I would have said that– If the press conference,
- 26:03Speaker 5: and you shouldn't base it on a press conference, that
- 26:05Speaker 5: maybe you lean Deshaun just because you're paying him all
- 26:07Speaker 5: this money.
- 26:07Speaker 2: He does have the experience.
- 26:09Speaker 5: Maybe a little more upside still if he could capture
- 26:12Speaker 5: some of the magic. But after he went on the podium,
- 26:15Speaker 5: I don't know how you can name him starting quarterback.
- 26:17Speaker 5: I think our man Dan Orlovsky is talking about the
- 26:19Speaker 5: same thing right now, like how Munkin would do this.
- 26:22Speaker 9: Hey, guys.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Huh? Deshaun Watson was just named the quarterback. starter yeah
- 26:27Speaker 1: yeah and that's that's what Orlovsky's talking about just named
- 26:29Speaker 1: the starting quarterback yeah well that gives the fans something
- 26:32Speaker 1: to do during the game then boo they can boo
- 26:34Speaker 1: yeah you can't boo your starter.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Right oh yeah you can't they were already doing it
- 26:40Speaker 2: the preseason they were getting their reps in there's ever a.
- 26:42Speaker 10: City that you boo your starter it's Cleveland or Philadelphia
- 26:45Speaker 10: yeah or New York I mean there's.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Actually yeah but let me ask you more than that
- 26:50Speaker 1: let me ask you this because I've got the colors
- 26:51Speaker 1: of my Super Bowl champion pick On today. Oh, no.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Don't do this to me.
- 26:56Speaker 4: Don't land mine, LT.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Please don't do this.
- 26:59Speaker 11: California is finally going to fall into that sinkhole.
- 27:03Speaker 7: The fault line is going to split.
- 27:06Speaker 2: It's going to float right away, Tyler.
- 27:07Speaker 5: I mean, the Naval Academy took one today. They literally
- 27:10Speaker 5: took their first torpedo since when?
- 27:12Speaker 1: Come on, guys. I'm not landmining Lance. The Chargers. Oh, okay, good.
- 27:16Speaker 2: That ain't the Chargers colors.
- 27:19Speaker 1: I was waiting. I've lost a dollar to Bo, our
- 27:22Speaker 1: president up here, because I was like, God, give me
- 27:25Speaker 1: that Rams hat we have in our next round store,
- 27:27Speaker 1: next round dot store, next round dot store. because Lance
- 27:31Speaker 1: will say something on the air before I have to
- 27:32Speaker 1: bring it up. So I have a different one to
- 27:34Speaker 1: throw on here if you need me to throw it on.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Are they your actual Super Bowls?
- 27:37Speaker 2: Are you a high school recruit? How many different hats
- 27:39Speaker 2: you got under there?
- 27:41Speaker 4: Make your pick today.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Set them on the table, Jim.
- 27:44Speaker 2: There's his NFC pick. He's going to the Giants. That's
- 27:47Speaker 2: the Bills, right?
- 27:47Speaker 1: Is that the Bills?
- 27:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you got a little red in there.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Bills v. Rams?
- 27:51Speaker 4: Texans.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Could be the Texans.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Could be the Texans. Yeah, the Texans are my AFC pick. Oh,
- 27:55Speaker 1: there you go. But I do think the Rams win
- 27:57Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. But if you're the Rams, seriously. Ty
- 28:01Speaker 1: Simpson has looked good. Stetson Bennett has looked good. Why not?
- 28:08Speaker 1: Cleveland would be better off with Stetson Bennett as the
- 28:11Speaker 1: starting quarterback. than they would with Shador Sanders, in my opinion.
- 28:15Speaker 5: Well, the Rams, if they're smart, and watching again this weekend,
- 28:19Speaker 5: I watched every rep from both of those guys. Stetson
- 28:21Speaker 5: outplayed Ty Simpson. Ty was better last week. Stetson was
- 28:24Speaker 5: better this week. Stetson's got more experience. He needs to
- 28:27Speaker 5: be the number two. I fully expect him to be
- 28:29Speaker 5: the number two. There were people out there, Stetson will
- 28:31Speaker 5: probably get cut. If he got cut, he's going to
- 28:33Speaker 5: get picked up.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Probably by Cleveland. Maybe Cleveland, maybe Arizona in division.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Who knows? Is there anything in Cleveland you guys would want?
- 28:40Speaker 1: For Stetson Bennett, a guy who could be a QB3. Yeah,
- 28:43Speaker 1: we'll take Jared Burse back.
- 28:46Speaker 2: We've already had him.
- 28:47Speaker 1: If only I was a Cleveland.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Here's the thing.
- 28:52Speaker 5: The Rams have got to prepare that this is for
- 28:55Speaker 5: sure Stafford's last season.
- 28:56Speaker 1: I believe it is.
- 28:58Speaker 5: And then you've got two quarterbacks that I think can
- 29:00Speaker 5: be starting quarterbacks in the NFL. I've seen some really
- 29:02Speaker 5: good stuff from Ty this preseason. I've seen some really
- 29:05Speaker 5: good stuff the last two preseasons from Stetson Bennett.
- 29:08Speaker 2: So you hold them both. I hold them both.
- 29:10Speaker 5: And look, now you've got to have three quarterbacks on
- 29:13Speaker 5: the 53.
- 29:13Speaker 2: I mean, it's an NFL rule now.
- 29:15Speaker 1: The guys behind the glass, if you're new with us
- 29:17Speaker 1: on the next round, presented by Hard Rock Bet here
- 29:21Speaker 1: on Sporting State. Behind the glass is Tyler here. He
- 29:25Speaker 1: runs the board. Brooks back there. He's our social media guy.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I don't have y'all's official titles. I'm sorry. We'll get
- 29:31Speaker 1: back to that. And then Forrester is a Falcons fan.
- 29:34Speaker 1: This was a big topic in Atlanta over the weekend.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Sports talk was bring Stetson. Bennett home after he had
- 29:41Speaker 1: the great performance. The Falcons should go out and get
- 29:43Speaker 1: Stetson Bennett as the quarterback of the future for the Falcons,
- 29:46Speaker 1: not Tua, not Penix. I mean, I don't think he
- 29:50Speaker 1: could be any worse than what that QB situation is
- 29:53Speaker 1: right now.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I really, Scott, thought You know, listen, I've watched
- 29:56Speaker 3: Tua as a Dolphins fan forever. I really thought it
- 29:59Speaker 3: would be a good reset for him. And I thought
- 30:01Speaker 3: you guys were the favorite in the South when he
- 30:03Speaker 3: went and got Tua. I thought neither one of them
- 30:05Speaker 3: are great, but they're both good enough with the other weapons.
- 30:08Speaker 2: And having watched Tua in the preseason, he's cooked. Jack Strand.
- 30:12Speaker 5: He's done, isn't he? Jack Strand. Did you watch this weekend?
- 30:15Speaker 5: Minnesota Moorhead, the undrafted free agent, 6'5, 240-pound quarterback. Jack
- 30:22Speaker 5: Strand is going to be the guy for the Falcons.
- 30:23Speaker 1: You think so?
- 30:24Speaker 2: I say that jokingly. Didn't they play Cooper Rush?
- 30:26Speaker 1: Yeah, but Jack Strand outplayed all of them. I mean, Scott,
- 30:30Speaker 1: don't you believe Tua's cooked? I mean, he cannot throw
- 30:32Speaker 1: the ball down the field. Oh, did you guys see
- 30:35Speaker 1: the clip from the OTAs?
- 30:37Speaker 2: The joint practice with the Colts?
- 30:39Speaker 1: It was terrible. Yeah, he cannot throw the ball down
- 30:41Speaker 1: the field. First exhibition game, it was terrible. negative 0.2
- 30:46Speaker 1: yards airtime. And you cannot dink and dunk in the NFL.
- 30:49Speaker 1: I mean, you might could manage that somehow in college,
- 30:52Speaker 1: a dink and dunk offense. You cannot do it in
- 30:54Speaker 1: the NFL. I really thought we were past the point.
- 30:56Speaker 1: You guys remember when, you know, the NFL, when it was,
- 30:59Speaker 1: it still had some parity, but there were only eight
- 31:01Speaker 1: to 10 really, really good quarterbacks and eight to 10
- 31:05Speaker 1: organizations had really, really bad quarterback play.
- 31:08Speaker 5: I thought we were past that. I thought the worst
- 31:10Speaker 5: of the quarterback play you know, would be a guy
- 31:12Speaker 5: like Daniel Jones that's getting a second start in Indianapolis,
- 31:15Speaker 5: who was pretty good at times. I just thought quarterbacks
- 31:18Speaker 5: are so specialized today that I thought that almost all
- 31:22Speaker 5: 32 teams would have a capable guy, but this is
- 31:25Speaker 5: looking like the NFL 10 years ago.
- 31:27Speaker 1: I could see that. I could see that. But you've got,
- 31:29Speaker 1: you know, the 49ers occasionally pretty, and Matt Jones both
- 31:34Speaker 1: could be okay starters in the league. I think you've
- 31:37Speaker 1: got a couple with the Rams. I But then you've
- 31:42Speaker 1: got a situation in Pittsburgh.
- 31:43Speaker 5: I know you've got a Hall of Famer there, but
- 31:45Speaker 5: you're number two, Mason Rudolph. You don't have good quarterback
- 31:48Speaker 5: options right now in Pittsburgh. Obviously, you don't with the
- 31:50Speaker 5: Cleveland Browns. I don't know if you do with the
- 31:52Speaker 5: Tennessee Titans. Like Cam Ward, he does not have a
- 31:55Speaker 5: completion to their number one overall pick, Cornell Tate. The
- 31:58Speaker 5: reason they've been playing him in the preseason is to
- 32:00Speaker 5: get more reps, but to build rapport with a first-round
- 32:03Speaker 5: guy that doesn't even have a reception yet.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Struggling out of the gate, for sure. Good-looking new uniforms, though. No,
- 32:09Speaker 1: they do look good. In Nashville. Yeah. with the Titans there.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Kirk Cousins, I don't know if they've officially named him yet,
- 32:15Speaker 1: but he's going to be the starter with the Raiders.
- 32:18Speaker 1: But coming out of the weekend, Gentee's banged up again.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Good news, though. Start to worry about him injury-wise.
- 32:23Speaker 5: You know, when you see teammates take a knee and
- 32:26Speaker 5: start praying around a player getting caught up, then you
- 32:29Speaker 5: start thinking that maybe they heard something, maybe he said something.
- 32:33Speaker 5: But reports now out of Vegas, and the good news
- 32:36Speaker 5: is you've got a really, really good number two player
- 32:40Speaker 5: out of Arkansas that has been playing his ass off
- 32:42Speaker 5: in the preseason. But the news right now for Jenty
- 32:46Speaker 5: is it's just a sprained ankle. Now, we don't know
- 32:49Speaker 5: what grade sprain it is, but I would fully expect
- 32:51Speaker 5: him week one.
- 32:52Speaker 1: A sprained ankle.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Mike Washington's that rookie. I'm not diminishing the act of prayer.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Don't listen. Don't hear me say that. But a sprained
- 32:59Speaker 1: ankle is not something you take a knee and pray over. No, no.
- 33:01Speaker 3: You take a knee and pray over a guy that
- 33:03Speaker 3: completely blew his knee up or his bone sticking out
- 33:05Speaker 3: of his leg or something like that. When you see
- 33:07Speaker 3: guys taking a knee and praying, you're like, there must
- 33:09Speaker 3: have been a bone protruding, you know, something like that.
- 33:11Speaker 3: Sprained ankle after that, you thank God that it was
- 33:14Speaker 3: only a sprained ankle, right?
- 33:15Speaker 1: Hell of a way worse.
- 33:16Speaker 5: I know you texted us and didn't get a response
- 33:18Speaker 5: about Mendoza last week.
- 33:20Speaker 2: I wasn't watching.
- 33:21Speaker 1: I totally jinxed that.
- 33:22Speaker 2: But, you know, the pick six over the weekend.
- 33:25Speaker 3: You mean right after Troy Aikman said he looked a
- 33:27Speaker 3: lot like Peyton Manning in his first term?
- 33:29Speaker 2: I do think Mendoza's going to be really good, though.
- 33:32Speaker 1: I do, too. I've always liked him, too. You guys,
- 33:36Speaker 1: I hope, are familiar with the Bermuda Triangle. We've talked
- 33:39Speaker 1: about it many times on this show. The Bermuda Triangle
- 33:42Speaker 1: in the NFL is the right tackle for the Kansas
- 33:46Speaker 1: City Chiefs.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Whoever they put there is horrible.
- 33:50Speaker 1: And the guy that's there now, Jalen Moore, two-year, $ 30
- 33:54Speaker 1: million contract, And he is listed at Bleacher Report as
- 34:01Speaker 1: a big loser of the weekend. He was supposed to
- 34:04Speaker 1: be the probable right starter at tackle, but just not having–
- 34:09Speaker 1: they have guys that jump off sides. They can't block.
- 34:13Speaker 1: The reason Patrick Mahomes is closer to retirement than winning
- 34:16Speaker 1: another Super Bowl maybe is because of their right tackle play.
- 34:20Speaker 5: Well, and I'm still not buying the Chiefs. I think
- 34:22Speaker 5: the division continues to get more and more difficult. Mike
- 34:25Speaker 5: McDaniel taking over the offense. For the Chargers, I think
- 34:29Speaker 5: they're going to be better this year. Denver, we saw
- 34:32Speaker 5: the improvement last year. The Raiders now with much improved
- 34:36Speaker 5: quarterback play and more weapons now.
- 34:38Speaker 2: I think the Raiders are going to be much better.
- 34:40Speaker 5: The Chiefs, I mean, you go back to 2024 when
- 34:43Speaker 5: they were 15-2, they were 10-0 in one-possession games.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Last year, when they missed the playoffs, 1-9 in one-possession games.
- 34:49Speaker 1: That's the thing.
- 34:50Speaker 5: So you've seen them, like, you know, they're starting to
- 34:52Speaker 5: take a step back to begin with.
- 34:54Speaker 3: We talk about, in the SEC a lot, one-possession games. Like, oh,
- 34:57Speaker 3: they played a bunch of one-possession games. A lot of
- 34:59Speaker 3: teams do. In the NFL, every team does. So that's
- 35:01Speaker 3: a key stat right there. Your one-possession game stat is
- 35:05Speaker 3: going to tell.
- 35:05Speaker 1: You whether you're in the playoffs or not.
- 35:07Speaker 5: I mean, look, age gets us all. It's starting to
- 35:10Speaker 5: get Mahomes a little bit without those weapons. And, you know,
- 35:13Speaker 5: Mahomes two years ago in those one possession games was
- 35:15Speaker 5: magic last year. And a couple of them he didn't
- 35:17Speaker 5: play because, you know, he had torn his ACL. But
- 35:20Speaker 5: you're seeing him, you know. regress a little bit, and
- 35:23Speaker 5: obviously that's going to be the whole Chiefs team if
- 35:26Speaker 5: he's going backwards.
- 35:27Speaker 1: More NFL later in the second hour of the next
- 35:30Speaker 1: round presented by Hard Rock Bet on Sported State. When
- 35:33Speaker 1: we come back, we go to science class, fifth grade
- 35:36Speaker 1: science class. So get ready for square pizza, grab a
- 35:38Speaker 1: juice box or whatever you used to do in fifth grade.
- 35:40Speaker 1: We talk science when we come back. Listen, your conference
- 35:44Speaker 1: is too big if in basketball, North Carolina and North
- 35:49Speaker 1: Carolina State have to play each other in a non-conference
- 35:53Speaker 1: game in December. The ACC last week announcing that North
- 35:58Speaker 1: Carolina and NC State have agreed for the next two
- 36:00Speaker 1: years to play in Greensboro in December, this year December 15th,
- 36:05Speaker 1: in a non-conference game because they'll only meet once in
- 36:08Speaker 1: the ACC schedule. Silly. Too big. Yeah. Too big. What
- 36:13Speaker 1: is the ACC? Is it 18 now in basketball? I mean,
- 36:19Speaker 1: I'll tell you in a sec. Is it 17? It
- 36:21Speaker 1: could be. I lose track, man. I lose track. Because
- 36:24Speaker 1: they've got Notre Dame, remember, as an actual basketball member
- 36:27Speaker 1: but not a football member. Yeah, but your conferences are
- 36:30Speaker 1: too big if two state rivals have to play each
- 36:33Speaker 1: other In a non-conference game in December. I agree with
- 36:37Speaker 1: you 100%. Yeah, too big.
- 36:39Speaker 2: XXXY, the brand that launched a..
- 36:43Speaker 1: It's 18. Oh, it's 18?
- 36:44Speaker 12: Yep.
- 36:44Speaker 1: The brand that launched a movement, bringing you part of
- 36:47Speaker 1: the show.
- 36:47Speaker 3: It was founded by Jennifer Say, the former national champion gymnast,
- 36:50Speaker 3: former Levi's brand president. She walked away from a corporate
- 36:53Speaker 3: job rather than say something she didn't believe.
- 36:56Speaker 2: And she started her new... company XXXY Athletics.
- 37:01Speaker 3: And in their words, their mission is to empower female
- 37:04Speaker 3: athletes to take a stand for fair competition. So they
- 37:07Speaker 3: call it the T that launched a movement. And they're
- 37:09Speaker 3: also making the official Nashville Balls gear, by the way,
- 37:11Speaker 3: if you want Clay Travis' future WNBA franchise gear. XXXY,
- 37:15Speaker 3: the official apparel provider for the Nashville Balls.
- 37:18Speaker 1: I will tell you that logo, the only thing that
- 37:19Speaker 1: bothers me is that the by the play on words,
- 37:23Speaker 1: the sack or the net in this case is ripped there. Yeah,
- 37:26Speaker 1: it's going to come out at some point. That seems
- 37:27Speaker 1: to be painful. I would agree. Hey, but one is
- 37:29Speaker 1: always lower than the other. That's accurate.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Tease trucker hats, they're out right now.
- 37:33Speaker 3: If you want the shirt, that is where you get
- 37:35Speaker 3: it at this website, xxxyathletics.com. That is xx-xyathletics. athletics.com new

- 37:53Speaker 3: women's hoodies hats Graphic T's all right there at xxyathletics.com.

- 38:02Speaker 1: August 24th, 2006, a big day for who or what?
- 38:07Speaker 5: Well, I mean, for gecko scientists, and they want to
- 38:09Speaker 5: throw back everything we learned back in the day.
- 38:12Speaker 2: And, you know, I never understood.
- 38:14Speaker 5: I got in an argument with a math teacher, this
- 38:16Speaker 5: new math, like, hey, I can get to my kid's
- 38:19Speaker 5: final number doing it my old way well you can't
- 38:21Speaker 5: do you got to show the new work and we've
- 38:23Speaker 5: got new math why don't we have new math why
- 38:25Speaker 5: would we go from nine planets to eight planets on
- 38:29Speaker 5: this day in 2006 we decided pluto was going to
- 38:32Speaker 5: be demoted to a dwarf planet i still recognize personally
- 38:36Speaker 5: pluto is a planet it's a planet.
- 38:37Speaker 3: In my book always will be yeah yeah yeah i'll
- 38:39Speaker 3: always have pluto as a planet i mean first of
- 38:41Speaker 3: all the way i remember the planet names i gotta
- 38:43Speaker 3: have pluto for the sentence to make sense.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Give that to us. I don't remember that. I remember
- 38:47Speaker 2: Roy G. Biv before doing the..
- 38:49Speaker 1: Red, orange, yellow, green. Blue, indigo, violet. I don't remember
- 38:54Speaker 1: where it was. Did you put Uranus in that sentence? Yeah.
- 38:59Speaker 3: No, Uranus is in this one. Yeah, give it to us.
- 39:02Speaker 3: My very educated mother served us nine pickles.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Never heard that before. That was a Calhoun County thing, probably.
- 39:12Speaker 7: You're missing Jupiters.
- 39:13Speaker 2: My very educated mother just served us nine pictures.
- 39:16Speaker 4: There you go.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Thanks, Tyler.
- 39:17Speaker 3: Been a minute since I've done it. Yeah, that was
- 39:19Speaker 3: Calhoun County, Alabama.
- 39:20Speaker 4: Art did it?
- 39:21Speaker 9: Huh?
- 39:22Speaker 1: Art did it? Since I've done it? Since I've done it?
- 39:24Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 39:25Speaker 1: You missed it last week. He called it the Big Tan?
- 39:28Speaker 1: The Big Tan.
- 39:30Speaker 5: I've never understood why we have so many surveys.
- 39:32Speaker 2: You know, when we do research on..
- 39:34Speaker 1: We would have family few. We would not have family
- 39:36Speaker 1: few if it wasn't for service.
- 39:38Speaker 7: It doesn't work if you only ask 50 people.
- 39:40Speaker 1: That's true. You've got to ask 100.
- 39:42Speaker 5: We go back and we research some stupid stuff. And
- 39:45Speaker 5: for people to be like, oh, it's too small. It's
- 39:48Speaker 5: too dark. It's too cold.
- 39:50Speaker 7: Well, it's because it doesn't orbit the sun.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Okay.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Ah, well.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Did they not know that shit before?
- 39:55Speaker 2: How does it not orbit the sun? It's not floating around,
- 39:58Speaker 2: not going anywhere.
- 39:59Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 40:00Speaker 1: So Pluto just sits still?
- 40:02Speaker 11: So, to be considered a planet, it requires the object
- 40:07Speaker 11: to orbit the sun, be round from its own gravity.
- 40:10Speaker 7: And have cleared its neighborhood of other space rocks.
- 40:14Speaker 11: Pluto fails the third rule because it shares the orbit
- 40:17Speaker 11: with many icy.
- 40:19Speaker 7: Bodies in the Kuiper Belt.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Okay, well, who dropped the ball.
- 40:23Speaker 2: On this originally to make Pluto the ninth planet?
- 40:25Speaker 11: Well, they updated the definition of a planet.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what they did. They changed the definition. The
- 40:29Speaker 1: old Kuiper Belt.
- 40:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 40:30Speaker 1: I don't want to go Nashville balls here, but we
- 40:33Speaker 1: don't need to be changing definitions.
- 40:34Speaker 2: That's right.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Let's keep it. So let's do this. Okay. Let's do this.
- 40:37Speaker 1: This is a Lance topic here, but Lance says, since
- 40:41Speaker 1: Pluto on this day was demoted from being a planet,
- 40:44Speaker 1: let's take one power four football program and demote it
- 40:49Speaker 1: from being a power four football program.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Start us off.
- 40:52Speaker 1: I am going to go. First of all, I've never
- 40:54Speaker 1: been to this place. I have been to this state.
- 40:57Speaker 5: Some people that are from there, and they're the only
- 40:59Speaker 5: ones that will tell you it's an underrated state, but Piscataway,
- 41:02Speaker 5: New Jersey. I'm going with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. You're
- 41:06Speaker 5: going to piss off a good friend of yours.
- 41:08Speaker 1: That was what I had dinner with her last night.
- 41:10Speaker 1: Former gymnast at Rutgers, Lauren Sissler, now with ESPN. Yeah,
- 41:14Speaker 1: she's an awesome person. I had dinner with her last night.
- 41:17Speaker 2: She'll be gutted that she was even talking about Rutgers
- 41:19Speaker 2: at dinner last night.
- 41:20Speaker 5: Okay, well, we will remove Lauren from this conversation, but
- 41:23Speaker 5: 156 years of Scarlet Knight football.
- 41:26Speaker 1: They've only been to 11 bowl games. You know how
- 41:28Speaker 1: easy it is to get to a bowl game?
- 41:30Speaker 2: 11 bowl games.
- 41:32Speaker 5: They've only had two 10-win seasons in 156 years. How
- 41:36Speaker 5: many first-round draft picks do you think they've had in
- 41:38Speaker 5: their 156 years?
- 41:38Speaker 2: Zero. They have three.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Three.
- 41:42Speaker 2: But, I mean, Ohio State tops that every single year. Yeah,
- 41:45Speaker 2: I know.
- 41:45Speaker 5: Just first-rounders from Miami last year. 16 losing seasons over
- 41:50Speaker 5: their last 25 seasons of football. Nobody would miss them.
- 41:54Speaker 5: They were at one time not a power four. They
- 41:56Speaker 5: don't deserve to be a power four now. Shiano doesn't
- 41:59Speaker 5: have a bad product right now. I mean, they're kind
- 42:02Speaker 5: of middling, but it's just traditionally, historically, they've been terrible.
- 42:05Speaker 5: Could I watch college football if Rutgers weren't in it?
- 42:08Speaker 1: Absolutely, I could. For me... It's going to be a
- 42:12Speaker 1: school that I think no longer can clear itself of
- 42:15Speaker 1: space rocks, and it's struggling to keep its own orbit
- 42:18Speaker 1: in the Big Ten. I'm going with Purdue. Purdue has
- 42:22Speaker 1: a lot of history, a lot of bowl games, Drew Brees,
- 42:24Speaker 1: Gary Danielson, but Jeff Brom's not walking through that door anymore.
- 42:29Speaker 1: They haven't won a Big Ten game in two years.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Were they in the Big Ten East, West, Legends games? Leaders.
- 42:38Speaker 1: They were. They were the West. Yeah, they were the West.
- 42:41Speaker 4: They won it randomly one year and got demolished by Michigan.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, I remember that. I think it has left–
- 42:48Speaker 1: the Big Ten has left Purdue behind. That's who I
- 42:51Speaker 1: would kick down. Well, you know they got a new AD.
- 42:53Speaker 1: They're going to win championships.
- 42:54Speaker 8: That's right.
- 42:55Speaker 1: I mean, if you don't want to win championships, go
- 42:57Speaker 1: to Indiana. Yeah, the national champion. And I would also
- 43:00Speaker 1: tell you, P is for Pluto, so I thought it
- 43:02Speaker 1: worked for this segment. And it would help my– basketball
- 43:06Speaker 1: bracket every year in march too if purdue wasn't in
- 43:09Speaker 1: it because i buy into them way too much it
- 43:11Speaker 1: cost me so many.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Money if i just saw that i would think princeton based.
- 43:15Speaker 1: On the page okay yep i i did it quickly
- 43:18Speaker 1: i i literally said i'm we're not drawing logos i
- 43:20Speaker 1: mean you.
- 43:21Speaker 5: Can't even read mine my writing so bad i had
- 43:23Speaker 5: to run to the bathroom i uh by the way
- 43:26Speaker 5: our our new dry erase boards were supposed to be
- 43:28Speaker 5: here today hey what happened i thought you were getting
- 43:29Speaker 5: them Oh, I thought you were shipping them.
- 43:31Speaker 1: No, I thought Bo was shipping them. Okay, so it
- 43:33Speaker 1: went from my fault to Bo's fault.
- 43:34Speaker 7: It appears like they're not on the way at all.
- 43:37Speaker 1: I'm going to say those have not even been ordered.
- 43:38Speaker 1: New and dry race boards by our first sport and
- 43:41Speaker 1: state official show.
- 43:42Speaker 2: We do have a staple still, don't we? Well, I
- 43:44Speaker 2: thought that's where Bo.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Was getting them. I'll follow up on that after the show.
- 43:49Speaker 3: My team, like Tyler explained... Has been in orbit before,
- 43:54Speaker 3: but they can't stay in orbit. And that's why I'm
- 43:55Speaker 3: kicking them out. Now, I want to keep them in basketball.
- 43:57Speaker 3: I didn't always have to kick them out of basketball, too.
- 43:59Speaker 1: Is that the thing?
- 43:59Speaker 2: I thought we were only kicking.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Them out of football. Just football. That's it. Yeah. Minus Kansas. Kansas.
- 44:04Speaker 1: The Jayhawks.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Now, Kansas at times, they've gotten into orbit.
- 44:09Speaker 2: The big man Geno had them in an orange bowl.
- 44:11Speaker 1: They played..
- 44:13Speaker 3: The Missouri Tigers for the Big 12 championship, and that
- 44:16Speaker 3: was a one versus two matchup.
- 44:19Speaker 5: It was one versus two to see who would actually
- 44:22Speaker 5: go and play Oklahoma. Missouri ended up being the number
- 44:25Speaker 5: one team after that game, but that was Todd Riesing.
- 44:27Speaker 5: That was a really, really good Kansas team, and Lance
- 44:29Speaker 5: Leopold He was like the new hot coach a couple
- 44:32Speaker 5: of years ago.
- 44:33Speaker 2: Now he's on the hot seat. Now he's on the
- 44:34Speaker 2: hot seat.
- 44:34Speaker 1: That's right.
- 44:35Speaker 2: They can't stay in orbit. Kansas cannot stay in orbit.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2-0 in the preseason because of Kansas
- 44:40Speaker 1: quarterback Jalen Daniels.
- 44:41Speaker 2: And I was about to say.
- 44:42Speaker 1: Our ones and twos can beat nobody, but when we
- 44:44Speaker 1: put the threes in, we're winning. Dude, he has been really,
- 44:47Speaker 1: really good. Undrafted free agent for Tampa Bay. I will
- 44:50Speaker 1: make a prediction he will at least start one game
- 44:52Speaker 1: because Baker will not make it a full 17.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Is he the backup?
- 44:55Speaker 1: He's going to be our two?
- 44:56Speaker 2: They don't even know if he's going to make the roster.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Yeah. I had him as our three. All right, that's
- 45:00Speaker 1: our Pluto demotion. When we come back on the next round,
- 45:04Speaker 1: presented by Hard Rock Bet here on Sporting State, two
- 45:09Speaker 1: Columbias that had a good and a bad weekend. One
- 45:14Speaker 1: of them is an amazing story, and the other one
- 45:16Speaker 1: used to steal my pennies. All that's coming up here
- 45:19Speaker 1: on the next round, presented by Hard Rock Bet on
- 45:22Speaker 1: Sporting State. We're the next round presented by Hard Rock
- 45:26Speaker 1: Bet on Sport and State. LTD & B here with you.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Over the weekend, you don't like country music, right? I mean, look, I...
- 45:36Speaker 1: You're growing to enjoy some of it.
- 45:38Speaker 5: You know, in the 90s, I listened a little bit
- 45:40Speaker 5: just because, you know, around people that were listening to
- 45:43Speaker 5: it a lot. I mean, I respect, it's a weird
- 45:46Speaker 5: genre because you hear a guy like Morgan Wallen, he
- 45:49Speaker 5: doesn't sound like he can sing, but I mean, the
- 45:51Speaker 5: guy sells out every freaking stadium he plays.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Brown went to see a 90s cover band over the weekend.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Straight tequila nights, yeah. According to his wife's social media feed.
- 46:04Speaker 1: When I did Uber a couple of weeks ago, I
- 46:06Speaker 1: mentioned them.
- 46:07Speaker 4: That's right.
- 46:07Speaker 1: So they started following me. That's right.
- 46:10Speaker 3: The mention got to them, but Lance drove past Iron City.
- 46:15Speaker 3: Mentioned they're coming. I said, oh, I think Jennifer got
- 46:18Speaker 3: tickets for that. They started following us on social media,
- 46:21Speaker 3: got back to them that we mentioned them on that random.
- 46:24Speaker 1: Show that we were doing. Did they hook you up
- 46:26Speaker 1: with tickets? No, I didn't ask for that. I mean,
- 46:28Speaker 1: tickets are fairly inexpensive. But I went to see them.
- 46:30Speaker 1: They were really, really good. Two and a half hours
- 46:32Speaker 1: they played. Luke Bryan is a current country music star.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Yeah, this is what I don't understand.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Like this guy, like how people like pay to see
- 46:42Speaker 1: this guy perform. Well, I wanted to say thanks for
- 46:45Speaker 1: Luke Bryan just tweeted, enjoying Sporting State and his next
- 46:48Speaker 1: round show. I'm kidding.
- 46:51Speaker 13: Love you, Luke.
- 46:53Speaker 1: He has a song called Play It Again, Play It Again,
- 46:55Speaker 1: which I really enjoy. Luke's son, Bo Bryan, is now
- 47:00Speaker 1: the quarterback at Battleground High School, which I think is
- 47:03Speaker 1: in Franklin or near Franklin, Tennessee. He is the starting quarterback,
- 47:08Speaker 1: went on the road down in Mobile this past week,
- 47:12Speaker 1: against Phillip Rivers' coach St. Michael's team, and Bo Bryan,
- 47:16Speaker 1: Luke Bryan's son, led Battleground to a 41-18 win over
- 47:22Speaker 1: Phillip Rivers' St. Michael's team, a good old-fashioned ass whooping. Yeah,
- 47:26Speaker 1: that is. Do you have his numbers? Yeah, what were
- 47:28Speaker 1: his numbers? I don't have his numbers in front of me.
- 47:30Speaker 1: I saw the highlights on SportsCenter, and it was touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown.
- 47:34Speaker 5: You know, there was a time when we were doing
- 47:36Speaker 5: a show together that Nashville football wasn't that good.
- 47:39Speaker 4: I know.
- 47:40Speaker 1: And it seems like, you know, it is really accelerated.
- 47:43Speaker 5: I'm sure you guys saw the highlight from the– The quarterback,
- 47:47Speaker 5: the Montreal running back that has signed with Tennessee.
- 47:50Speaker 1: David Gabriel Georges of Baylor High School in Chattanooga.
- 47:54Speaker 4: I have Luke Bryan's son's numbers.
- 47:55Speaker 3: Yeah, his first half was crazy. 10 of 15, 2
- 47:58Speaker 3: of 16, 2 touchdowns.
- 47:59Speaker 10: He wound up going for 375 and 3 touchdowns.
- 48:02Speaker 1: He scorched them in the first half.
- 48:04Speaker 2: What year is he?
- 48:06Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Is he a prospect?
- 48:08Speaker 4: Senior season.
- 48:09Speaker 1: Doesn't sound like it. But it's not the best high
- 48:12Speaker 1: school story of the weekend. Columbia High School in Huntsville, Alabama,
- 48:18Speaker 1: named after the Columbia Space Shuttle, is what the school
- 48:23Speaker 1: is named after. Damn, that's tough. Had lost 101 consecutive
- 48:31Speaker 1: games in high school football.
- 48:33Speaker 2: I think I would have switched the name at this point.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Sammy Coates, former Auburn wide receiver for the Auburn Tigers
- 48:41Speaker 1: and the SEC. Sammy Coates is their coach. And they
- 48:44Speaker 1: won the game over the weekend, breaking a 101-game win streak.
- 48:49Speaker 1: You see the celebration there. October of 2015 is the
- 48:54Speaker 1: last time they won a high school football game.
- 48:57Speaker 5: Yeah, we originated out of Birmingham. You probably remember this story.
- 49:00Speaker 5: John Carroll went like four, five, six, seven seasons. It wasn't...
- 49:05Speaker 5: to this degree, but I think it was like 50
- 49:07Speaker 5: or 60 games. That is amazing that you can make
- 49:09Speaker 5: it triple digits.
- 49:11Speaker 1: October of what year? October of 2015. And Sammy Coates
- 49:16Speaker 1: has went in there and got some athletes and turned
- 49:18Speaker 1: them around and they got the win. They're off. to
- 49:20Speaker 1: a 1-0 start. Celebration was unbelievable. He was a dog
- 49:23Speaker 1: of a player at Auburn, a wide receiver, played a
- 49:25Speaker 1: little bit in the league. in the NFL.
- 49:28Speaker 5: To put that in perspective, Jake Coker had just won
- 49:31Speaker 5: the starting job at Alabama, basically.
- 49:33Speaker 1: Here's what jumps out at me.
- 49:34Speaker 3: They had not won a game, as I watched that video,
- 49:36Speaker 3: since 2015. How many kids they've got out for football?
- 49:39Speaker 3: I mean, that's a heck of a sales job by
- 49:40Speaker 3: Sammy Coates.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Because until Sammy Coates gets there, you are coming in
- 49:44Speaker 1: and I'm not going to play football. I'll play baseball
- 49:46Speaker 1: and basketball. I'm not going to be on the losing
- 49:48Speaker 1: football team.
- 49:48Speaker 3: Why do I want to go sweat it out all
- 49:50Speaker 3: summer long just to lose 10 games and not go
- 49:52Speaker 3: to the playoffs?
- 49:54Speaker 1: I bring it up because... Columbia finally wins again on
- 49:58Speaker 1: the weekend that it's announced that Columbia Clearinghouse will go
- 50:04Speaker 1: out of business on September the 9th. They're closing their doors.
- 50:07Speaker 1: 71 years of offering vinyl, cassettes, then CDs. At one point,
- 50:14Speaker 1: they had 16 million subscribers to Columbia Clearinghouse.
- 50:19Speaker 5: It was basically a pyramid scheme for a corporation that
- 50:22Speaker 5: just took people's money. Gave people bad credit. They finally
- 50:25Speaker 5: figured out there's not enough Dunaways in the world to do.
- 50:29Speaker 5: Like people know about this bad brain.
- 50:31Speaker 1: You did it twice?
- 50:33Speaker 4: Twice, yeah.
- 50:33Speaker 1: I've never heard of anybody that did it twice. I
- 50:35Speaker 1: did it twice.
- 50:35Speaker 7: Did the door-to-door knife salesman ever get you? Yeah.
- 50:39Speaker 1: I did it once with cassettes and once when CDs
- 50:41Speaker 1: were online. Maybe a little bit different this time. Like
- 50:43Speaker 1: most of this, when I lost to a bookie, my
- 50:47Speaker 1: Toyota Tercel and my CDs and my stereo were Most
- 50:51Speaker 1: of the CDs they took were Columbia Clearinghouse CDs. They
- 50:54Speaker 1: cost me 13 CDs for 13 cents. Yeah, I'm glad
- 50:57Speaker 1: they're out of business. They were out of business on
- 50:59Speaker 1: September the 9th. When we come back, Tom Lugenbill joins
- 51:02Speaker 1: the show. He will talk with us about college football,
- 51:05Speaker 1: some starting quarterbacks named. This guy knows his stuff when
- 51:10Speaker 1: it comes to talent evaluation, especially that position. Lugenbill is
- 51:14Speaker 1: on the other side here on the next round, presented
- 51:16Speaker 1: by Hard Rock Bet on Sport & State. Back with you,
- 51:20Speaker 1: hour number two of Sport and State presented by Hard
- 51:24Speaker 1: Rock Bet. This is the next round. Our first official
- 51:27Speaker 1: guest on this side of the platform was a guest
- 51:30Speaker 1: of ours way back in the day. That's right, ESPN's
- 51:33Speaker 1: Tom Lugenbill. You'll see him throughout the college football season,
- 51:37Speaker 1: stadiums near you. Lugenbill has been joining.
- 51:40Speaker 3: Us for years, talking a little college football all the time.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Luges, welcome in, man. How are you? Tyler, he doesn't
- 51:48Speaker 1: hear us. You've got to unmute it. You muted us
- 51:51Speaker 1: to him. Tyler, there you go.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Thank you, Luke.
- 51:54Speaker 1: What is up? How are you?
- 51:54Speaker 8: Oh, I see you guys turned my volume up finally.
- 51:58Speaker 1: We finally did.
- 51:58Speaker 8: Yes.
- 51:59Speaker 1: We did not want you to hear us talking about
- 52:00Speaker 1: you in the break.
- 52:03Speaker 8: How you guys doing?
- 52:04Speaker 1: Good, buddy.
- 52:05Speaker 3: Let's start with some of the quarterbacks that have been
- 52:06Speaker 3: named over the weekend, and we'll start with Alabama.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Keelan Russell. You've watched Keelan Russell play. He was a
- 52:12Speaker 1: Gatorade Player of the Year. You evaluated his high school film.
- 52:15Speaker 1: What does he bring to Alabama that maybe some... I
- 52:20Speaker 1: hate to do the comps, but Alabama fans are like,
- 52:22Speaker 1: who does he look like? What does he bring to
- 52:24Speaker 1: Alabama's offense?
- 52:26Speaker 8: Well, first off, I think the number one thing he's
- 52:28Speaker 8: going to bring is preparedness and work ethic. It's the
- 52:30Speaker 8: best prepared quarterback we've had at the Under Armour All-America
- 52:33Speaker 8: game in probably 15 years. Just tireless worker, loves the game,
- 52:38Speaker 8: loves to study the game. So I think it's probably
- 52:41Speaker 8: a big portion of what won him the job, and
- 52:43Speaker 8: it's probably one of the reasons why the learning curve
- 52:45Speaker 8: will be a little less steep than maybe it is
- 52:47Speaker 8: for some others. But to me, it's just the overall
- 52:52Speaker 8: consistent accuracy, the ability– to push the ball downfield vertically
- 52:59Speaker 8: and just that kind of natural pocket feel for how
- 53:04Speaker 8: to extend plays when things aren't perfect, you know? And,
- 53:07Speaker 8: and as I said before with you guys, and I've,
- 53:10Speaker 8: I've been through this myself personally and I've, and I've
- 53:12Speaker 8: coached it as well. You know, those, those quarterback battles,
- 53:17Speaker 8: everything is charted, man. Like every single thing is documented
- 53:21Speaker 8: to win one of those. Like, You've got to number one,
- 53:25Speaker 8: you've got to be better than the other guy. You've
- 53:27Speaker 8: got to show it consistently day in and day out.
- 53:29Speaker 8: But then I think the other thing, too, that's really
- 53:31Speaker 8: important to note is that the coaching staff has to
- 53:35Speaker 8: get a real feel for the locker room, get a
- 53:38Speaker 8: feel for who is the team responding to. And I
- 53:41Speaker 8: think Keelan Russell won the team.
- 53:43Speaker 5: Luganville, these guys were shocked when I said earlier in
- 53:46Speaker 5: the show that Tennessee had not only the number one
- 53:48Speaker 5: overall offense, but also the number one scoring offense in
- 53:51Speaker 5: the SEC. Faison Brandon is going to be the guy
- 53:54Speaker 5: for Hypo. We know these Hypo offenses are exciting. What
- 53:58Speaker 5: does Brandon bring? And when you look at a Jim
- 54:01Speaker 5: Knowles defense with Deshaun Bishop coming back, a thousand plus
- 54:04Speaker 5: yard rusher. Yeah.
- 54:05Speaker 1: Could this Tennessee team surprise this year?
- 54:09Speaker 8: I think it could. Dependent upon how fast Faison branding
- 54:13Speaker 8: grows up, what he can handle, do they spoon feed
- 54:17Speaker 8: him early on? Do they just take the handcuffs off
- 54:20Speaker 8: and say, all right, man, you're free to go. Let's
- 54:23Speaker 8: roll with this thing. And can he minimize mistakes? I
- 54:27Speaker 8: think the other thing with young quarterbacks as well is
- 54:30Speaker 8: obviously he's very talented, was recruited by everybody. clearly showed
- 54:34Speaker 8: that he can be trusted with the offense if you're
- 54:35Speaker 8: going to win that job and you're that age and
- 54:38Speaker 8: you have that little experience. But young quarterbacks got to
- 54:42Speaker 8: not only manage the game, they got to manage their
- 54:43Speaker 8: emotions because it can be very easy to get caught
- 54:46Speaker 8: up in the highs and caught down in the lows.
- 54:49Speaker 8: And there will be speed bumps. There will be some
- 54:52Speaker 8: potholes along the way. How does he handle those things?
- 54:54Speaker 8: What's his maturity level like? You know, those first couple
- 54:57Speaker 8: of two to three weeks, I got to go to
- 54:58Speaker 8: Atlanta to play Georgia Tech, you know, on the road.
- 55:02Speaker 8: I think it'll be interesting. Offensively, the scheme is tried
- 55:06Speaker 8: and true, whether it's been UCF, whether it's been Missouri,
- 55:10Speaker 8: whether it's been Oklahoma, whether it's been Tennessee. That offense
- 55:14Speaker 8: or various versions of it have been great for the
- 55:18Speaker 8: college game, and I think they're very, very quarterback friendly.
- 55:20Speaker 8: I would not anticipate that they're going to do a
- 55:22Speaker 8: lot of full field read progression stuff. I would anticipate
- 55:26Speaker 8: that early on you're going to get a lot of
- 55:27Speaker 8: half field reads, simplify things pre-snap. and rely on that
- 55:31Speaker 8: run game. If that run game gets rolling, and Tennessee
- 55:34Speaker 8: loves to spread you out horizontally and really make that
- 55:37Speaker 8: box thin, take some pressure off the quarterback, I think
- 55:41Speaker 8: they have a chance by season's end to be pretty
- 55:43Speaker 8: damn good.
- 55:44Speaker 1: Do you expect Auburn's offense to look a little like
- 55:47Speaker 1: that with Alex Golish there now?
- 55:50Speaker 8: I would expect a play about every 13 seconds. That
- 55:55Speaker 8: was last year, that was by far the fastest play
- 55:59Speaker 8: operating offense i saw him twice on a thursday night
- 56:02Speaker 8: and when that thing gets rolling it is it is
- 56:06Speaker 8: difficult to to work with defensively and you know the
- 56:10Speaker 8: quarterback is such a freight train and things don't have
- 56:14Speaker 8: to be perfect for him so he can make what
- 56:17Speaker 8: looks like a potential negative play and turn it into
- 56:20Speaker 8: a positive one and so i um they'll be fast
- 56:23Speaker 8: they'll be faster than tennessee in terms of their operation
- 56:26Speaker 8: and that's you know not speaking lightly Okay.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Tom Lugenbill, you originate from North Carolina all these years
- 56:32Speaker 1: for us. North Carolina starts this weekend in Week 0
- 56:36Speaker 1: against TCU. Give me the temperature of Carolina fans with
- 56:42Speaker 1: Bill Belichick year two now. Are you starting to get
- 56:46Speaker 1: the sense they're ready to move on?
- 56:50Speaker 8: Well, I think this offseason didn't help. with the most
- 56:54Speaker 8: recent Mike Lombardi stuff. There's just a lot of distractions.
- 56:58Speaker 8: For a coach who built his entire career on not
- 57:03Speaker 8: having distractions, having one focal point, all it's been is
- 57:08Speaker 8: distractions since he arrived there. The players weren't good enough
- 57:13Speaker 8: a year ago. They weren't talented enough. Uh, they had
- 57:16Speaker 8: one of the most forgiving schedules that any first year
- 57:19Speaker 8: coach could have ever been given. And then this year
- 57:22Speaker 8: it's the exact opposite. Um, I love the addition of
- 57:26Speaker 8: Bobby Petrino. I can't imagine what it must be like
- 57:29Speaker 8: to have to go to work every day. Um, when
- 57:31Speaker 8: your head coach is Bill Belichick and Bobby Petrino, I
- 57:34Speaker 8: don't think there's a lot of smiles in that office. Um,
- 57:37Speaker 8: So I expect the offense to be better. The question is,
- 57:40Speaker 8: how much better are they at quarterback? Billy Edwards has
- 57:42Speaker 8: been hurt, often hurt, everywhere he's been, going all the
- 57:45Speaker 8: way back to Wake Forest when Dave Claussen recruited him,
- 57:48Speaker 8: then to Maryland, then to Wisconsin last year. I don't
- 57:52Speaker 8: know how much better their roster is, guys. And I
- 57:54Speaker 8: think that patience is waning very, very thin. And I
- 57:59Speaker 8: kind of felt this thing is either going to work
- 58:01Speaker 8: or it's going to be a colossal disaster when it
- 58:04Speaker 8: was announced. And I didn't think there'd be any in
- 58:07Speaker 8: between there. And I think it's kind of trending towards
- 58:09Speaker 8: the colossal disaster part now.
- 58:11Speaker 3: It certainly seems that way. There has been very little
- 58:14Speaker 3: positive come out of there. And now they got to
- 58:17Speaker 3: go on the field and do it, as you said,
- 58:18Speaker 3: against a difficult schedule. Tom Lugabil is with us, ESPN.
- 58:22Speaker 3: Another new coach in a new place just named his
- 58:24Speaker 3: quarterback today. According to reports, Aaron Filo has won the
- 58:27Speaker 3: job at Florida for John Sumrall. I think a lot
- 58:30Speaker 3: of people look at the Florida roster and say it's
- 58:32Speaker 3: not that far off if they can get quarterback right.
- 58:36Speaker 3: Aaron Filo, we've seen him at Georgia Tech. How does
- 58:38Speaker 3: he fit in with Summerall's system? And is that getting
- 58:40Speaker 3: quarterback right? Like, is that a high enough level quarterback
- 58:43Speaker 3: that you think Florida could potentially be some type of
- 58:46Speaker 3: surprise team in the SEC?
- 58:49Speaker 8: Yeah, I think so. And, you know, you've got to
- 58:51Speaker 8: tie that to Buster Faulkner, obviously, the offensive coordinator Coach
- 58:55Speaker 8: Summerall brought down from Georgia Tech. Understand two years ago
- 58:59Speaker 8: when Haynes King was returning, You know, I believe the
- 59:02Speaker 8: number out there to retain Aaron Filo at Tech to
- 59:06Speaker 8: be a backup was around a million bucks.
- 59:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 59:08Speaker 8: So obviously they failed. felt he was an important piece
- 59:11Speaker 8: of the puzzle for their future. And then Faulkner takes
- 59:14Speaker 8: the OC job at Florida and clearly brings Aaron Philo
- 59:18Speaker 8: with him. And I think the expectation was that I
- 59:21Speaker 8: know this guy. He knows me. He knows our system
- 59:24Speaker 8: inside and out. He gives us a leg up. Obviously,
- 59:28Speaker 8: you have a natural quarterback competition, as most places do
- 59:31Speaker 8: every fall. But I would have been surprised if he
- 59:33Speaker 8: wasn't named the starter. I think Florida's got better players
- 59:36Speaker 8: than people think they do. You just said something, though, Ryan,
- 59:40Speaker 8: that is true everywhere. If you get the quarterback position right,
- 59:44Speaker 8: it seems to solve all the other problems. It's kind
- 59:47Speaker 8: of funny how that works.
- 59:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I would agree.
- 59:49Speaker 8: And that's something. Yeah, and that's something that Florida has
- 59:52Speaker 8: struggled with in recent years.
- 59:53Speaker 5: Lugaville, you are part of the ACC network, and I
- 59:56Speaker 5: think one of the more legitimate questions in the ACC
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: is who is that second best team behind Miami? And
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: this weekend, week zero, we get NC State, Virginia. I've
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: been hyping both of these teams up. Not only what
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: you've got at the quarterback position for both, but the
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: production coming back on the Virginia side after an 11-win season,
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: the schedule for NC State. What a fun game this
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: weekend at Charlottesville.
- 1:00:21Speaker 8: Yeah, and it's actually a conference game this time around.
- 1:00:23Speaker 8: So good for the ACC on getting that one right. Listen,
- 1:00:28Speaker 8: let's start with Virginia because they, for two years, you
- 1:00:31Speaker 8: mentioned NC State's schedule, and you were right. It is
- 1:00:33Speaker 8: a schedule set up for a dark horse college football
- 1:00:36Speaker 8: playoff run. And Virginia, for two years in a row now,
- 1:00:40Speaker 8: has had a similar schedule. Very, very forgiving schedule. The
- 1:00:45Speaker 8: thing that Virginia did such a good job with a
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: year ago is every single portal guide they brought in
- 1:00:50Speaker 8: that needed to pan out, they all panned out. They
- 1:00:54Speaker 8: hit on all of them. I mean, the running back
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: Jamari Taylor was just unheralded and fantastic. Obviously Chandler Morris.
- 1:01:01Speaker 8: They do have a lot of returning components. So the
- 1:01:03Speaker 8: question now is, can they do that again? Can they
- 1:01:06Speaker 8: replicate their additions in the transfer portal to perform it
- 1:01:09Speaker 8: at such a high level? And can Bo Peribula, who's
- 1:01:12Speaker 8: uber-talented physically, can he stay healthy as well? Because he's
- 1:01:16Speaker 8: had a bit of a track record of not being
- 1:01:18Speaker 8: able to do so. I think NC State, if we're
- 1:01:21Speaker 8: having ACC conversations about who's the team behind Miami, I
- 1:01:24Speaker 8: think it probably starts with some combination of NC State, Louisville,
- 1:01:29Speaker 8: and SMU. But that quarterback at NC State is really,
- 1:01:33Speaker 8: really special. And even though they lost Hollywood Smothers to Texas–
- 1:01:37Speaker 8: Duke Scott is, is a load of a tailback. So
- 1:01:40Speaker 8: I think they're going to run the ball more effectively.
- 1:01:44Speaker 8: Two things have to happen for NC state to get
- 1:01:46Speaker 8: a 10 plus win season. They got to get off
- 1:01:48Speaker 8: the field on third down and they got to limit
- 1:01:50Speaker 8: their explosive plays given up on defense. Those were two
- 1:01:53Speaker 8: things that haunted that defense a year ago, but offensively
- 1:01:57Speaker 8: they could be as good as they've been maybe top
- 1:01:59Speaker 8: what they've been the last two years and having the
- 1:02:04Speaker 8: you know, the familiarity of a returning three-year starter at quarterback,
- 1:02:07Speaker 8: which is becoming increasingly rare now in college football, gives
- 1:02:10Speaker 8: them huge advantages. I actually like NC State in this game,
- 1:02:15Speaker 8: but I agree. I think this is going to be
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: a great football game on Saturday.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree with you. I like NC State.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: C.J.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Bailey, a quarterback, is the reason why. Come on, dude.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: They did not lose smothers to Texas, they lost him
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: to Alabama. Alabama then lost him to Texas. I know
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: where he ended up. Yeah, yeah. Come on now.
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: Come on.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Hey, Memphis and UNLV, why is Dan Mullen working at UNLV,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: like not working, having a job? Why is it successful
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: at UNLV now for him after one year? And can
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: he really win with Jackson Arnold? They play 9 o'clock Central,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: 10 Eastern on Fox on Saturday night. That's a great
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: G6 playoff contender game. Why is Dan Mullen working in
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: the desert?
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: Well, number one, I think he inherited a pretty good roster, right?
- 1:03:07Speaker 8: That wasn't a dumpster fire. And the fact that he
- 1:03:11Speaker 8: got Anthony Calandria to play the way he did last
- 1:03:16Speaker 8: year after what was an extremely inconsistent up and down
- 1:03:21Speaker 8: career at Virginia, where it included a lot of turnovers,
- 1:03:24Speaker 8: a lot of frustration for the Virginia fan base. I
- 1:03:27Speaker 8: was stunned when he took him. I was like, why
- 1:03:29Speaker 8: is he taking this guy? And then he turned him
- 1:03:32Speaker 8: into a consistent performer. If he can get that out
- 1:03:36Speaker 8: of Jackson Arnold, I think he already has a returning
- 1:03:39Speaker 8: roster that's That's pretty talented, but it wasn't as big
- 1:03:42Speaker 8: of a rebuild. In fact, I don't even think it
- 1:03:44Speaker 8: was a rebuild at all. I think it was add
- 1:03:45Speaker 8: compliments to it. Dan Mullins won a lot of football
- 1:03:48Speaker 8: games everywhere he's been. And I think in this particular instance,
- 1:03:53Speaker 8: he's at a place where he's relaxed. He's not dealing
- 1:03:57Speaker 8: with fan base pressure. He's not dealing with frustrations of this, that,
- 1:04:01Speaker 8: and the other. Man, he's out in the desert and
- 1:04:03Speaker 8: he's coaching ball where not many people are paying attention
- 1:04:06Speaker 8: and he's got this team competitive. And I think he's
- 1:04:08Speaker 8: having fun doing it.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: He's relaxed.
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: Aside from the controversy around this, which is sizable, the
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: Daquan Wright return to LSU if that indeed happens. What
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: does he bring to LSU? Obviously, he played for Charlie
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: Weiss Jr. and Lane Kiffin last year at Ole Miss
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: before going to the Cleveland Browns and now back to LSU.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: What would he bring to that LSU offense?
- 1:04:30Speaker 8: Well, obviously, there's familiarity there, right? I mean, I think
- 1:04:32Speaker 8: you widen the line of scrimmage, which helps you out
- 1:04:35Speaker 8: in the run game. gives you a target that you've
- 1:04:37Speaker 8: got that you know that you rely on, that you
- 1:04:40Speaker 8: know exactly what he brings, and he's probably going to
- 1:04:42Speaker 8: get a pay raise.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: From Cleveland or from Ole Miss or both? Yeah, both.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: I mean, practice squad guys make $ 250, 000. Yeah, no, it's
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: a pay.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: Raise from both Oxford and Cleveland, yes.
- 1:04:55Speaker 8: There's no secret why these guys are doing that. They're
- 1:04:58Speaker 8: realizing what the real world's all about, and all of
- 1:05:01Speaker 8: a sudden, if they got another year of eligibility, they
- 1:05:03Speaker 8: might not make an NFL roster anymore. You want to
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: go get a real job or you want to go
- 1:05:06Speaker 8: file a lawsuit and try to play another year?
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: Luke and Bill, you.
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: Will be in the booth for a lot of Big
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: 12 action this year. And I do think the Big
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: 12 has got underrated quarterbacks all over the place.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: Are you not? I don't know.
- 1:05:19Speaker 8: I'm in noon or 3.30 on ESPN2. I could be anywhere.
- 1:05:23Speaker 8: But I hope I get a lot of Big 12.
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: I was just talking to your sideline reporter a couple
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: of weeks ago, and she assumes that you guys are
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: going to be in a lot of Big 12 stadiums.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: We shall see.
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: With that said, I do think the Big 12 is
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: maybe the most underrated quarterback league this year. When you
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: look at guys like Fafita and Bachmeier and Dampier and
- 1:05:43Speaker 5: Will Hammond when he's healthy and Avery Johnson. But I
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: was going to ask you, is the best of the
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: bunch maybe Mestemaker coming in year one under Eric Morse
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: at Oklahoma State?
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: You know..
- 1:05:54Speaker 8: He clearly has been the most productive guy from last
- 1:05:59Speaker 8: year to this year, returning that you would say, okay,
- 1:06:01Speaker 8: follow the coach, follow the scheme. You got to make
- 1:06:04Speaker 8: the jump from the G five to the power four
- 1:06:06Speaker 8: level of competition. And you're, you're talking about the most
- 1:06:09Speaker 8: transformative roster in all of college football. It's probably not
- 1:06:12Speaker 8: even close. You know, it's a, it's a, it's like
- 1:06:14Speaker 8: an expansion team of free agents. So I think that, uh,
- 1:06:20Speaker 8: I think he's probably– the list is up there with him. And,
- 1:06:23Speaker 8: you know, you just listed a lot of guys that
- 1:06:25Speaker 8: are really, really good quarterbacks. I totally agree with what
- 1:06:28Speaker 8: you're saying. I think the quarterback play in that league
- 1:06:31Speaker 8: is going to be outstanding. You've got Connor Wigman and
- 1:06:33Speaker 8: Keison Henderson, the true freshman down at Houston. I think
- 1:06:35Speaker 8: Houston's a dark horse. Jaden Craig, who I love coming
- 1:06:39Speaker 8: from Harvard over to take over TCU. I think he's
- 1:06:42Speaker 8: going to be one of the surprise players in all
- 1:06:44Speaker 8: of college football. So if I get a lot of
- 1:06:47Speaker 8: Big 12 teams– I'm going to be excited because I
- 1:06:50Speaker 8: know I'm going to get good offensive football each and
- 1:06:52Speaker 8: every week.
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: So we always talk a little television or film with you.
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: Are you watching Furious right now on Hulu?
- 1:07:01Speaker 8: Yes, totally caught up, and I love it.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: I don't know how they make Emmy Rossum look so bad.
- 1:07:07Speaker 8: Oh, God, she looks awful.
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: She looks awful.
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: But outside of that, it's a really interesting– it was
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: kind of a slow burn early, but it's found its way,
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: and I think it's rounded into a really, really good show.
- 1:07:18Speaker 8: I totally agree with you. And the thing is, I've
- 1:07:20Speaker 8: never seen the gal that plays the villain. I've never
- 1:07:22Speaker 8: seen her before. I didn't, I didn't recognize her. She
- 1:07:25Speaker 8: is fantastic. I love the whole concept behind it. It's
- 1:07:29Speaker 8: a really good idea and they're executing it well. Uh,
- 1:07:32Speaker 8: so yeah, we're, we're, uh, finished three. So I'll get
- 1:07:37Speaker 8: ready to watch that again because that is the funniest
- 1:07:40Speaker 8: show on, on streaming right now.
- 1:07:42Speaker 5: And I am a, a big Kyle Chandler fan. I'm
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: not a comic book guy, but I've been watching lanterns.
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: I didn't know i'm not.
- 1:07:49Speaker 8: On episode two yet but i did like episode one
- 1:07:51Speaker 8: i think it's got some.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: Legs yeah yeah and look he was a true detective
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: like vibes does.
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: It uh yeah but more with aliens yeah but i
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: guess that's the uh we were talking last week i
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: didn't know the origin of green lantern but uh i
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: don't i don't either yeah but it's got a lot
- 1:08:06Speaker 5: of potential yeah.
- 1:08:08Speaker 8: It does because it it kind of comes off like
- 1:08:10Speaker 8: it's not a superhero show because you know they're all
- 1:08:12Speaker 8: dressed in you know normal street clothes nobody's wearing at
- 1:08:16Speaker 8: least in the first episode you know nobody's wearing costumes
- 1:08:18Speaker 8: nobody's you know none of that stuff's emerged yet so
- 1:08:21Speaker 8: i i kind of i like the first episode was
- 1:08:23Speaker 8: the second one good.
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: Uh yeah really good i mean you know it's it's
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: kind of logan like as far as like drinking you
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: know the adult language things that you didn't necessarily which
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: is you know very refreshing i think.
- 1:08:35Speaker 8: No i'm i'm with you on that my my um
- 1:08:39Speaker 8: My wife's big into documentaries right now. There's this gal
- 1:08:43Speaker 8: on Instagram. She's called The Documentary Girl. And all she
- 1:08:47Speaker 8: does is go on there and give little 35, 40
- 1:08:51Speaker 8: second snippets of documentaries. She's watched thousands of them. And
- 1:08:55Speaker 8: I'm telling you, man. every one of them recommends. Does
- 1:08:59Speaker 8: she show her feet?
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: Does she show her feet? It's a done-away prerequisite. I
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: am going to look this up and study my algorithm.
- 1:09:06Speaker 8: Oh, my God, that's too good. But she's been fantastic.
- 1:09:09Speaker 8: Everything she recommends has been fantastic. So we've been catching
- 1:09:12Speaker 8: up on a lot of documents. And I'm not generally
- 1:09:13Speaker 8: a big documentary guy, except... The best documentary I have
- 1:09:18Speaker 8: ever seen. Have you guys seen The Dark Wizard on
- 1:09:20Speaker 8: HBO Max?
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: No, I was going to watch it. That's like the
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: mountain climber, right? Or extreme sport.
- 1:09:26Speaker 8: Bro, you are not going to believe this guy. It
- 1:09:30Speaker 8: is the best. It's the best documentary. I can't even
- 1:09:34Speaker 8: believe this guy's human. Like his brain is different than
- 1:09:37Speaker 8: every other human on the planet. And I don't know
- 1:09:40Speaker 8: what it is, but it pushes him to do things
- 1:09:44Speaker 8: that we would not even let come into our mind.
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: And then just because Dunaway brought up True Detective, I
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: saw one of the best films that I have seen
- 1:09:53Speaker 5: over the last five years, a 2014 Spanish film. I
- 1:09:58Speaker 5: saw it on Thursday night and watched it again late
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: Friday night. It was that good. It's subtitled, it's called Marshland.
- 1:10:04Speaker 5: And it takes place in 1980. It was filmed in
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: 2014 because when I watched it originally, I was like,
- 1:10:09Speaker 5: they had to have copied True Detective season one because
- 1:10:12Speaker 5: it's got some of that element. And I looked and
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: they both basically came out at the same time in 2014.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: But really, really good.
- 1:10:21Speaker 8: Is it dubbed in English or just subtitles with spoken Spanish?
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Yeah, spoken Spanish, subtitled English. What's it on? It is
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: on Amazon Prime. I bought it.
- 1:10:30Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:10:31Speaker 8: Marshland. Okay.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: It's a movie. All right.
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: Oh, it's fantastic.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: Very good. All right. ESPN's Tom Lugabelle. See him off
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: football season long. Follow him on social media at Tom Lugabelle. Luke's.
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: Thank you very much. Have a wonderful week. And we
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: can't wait to see you at a stadium nearby. Well,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: how about Monday morning?
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: Oh, and we can't wait to see you on our platform.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: Next round live. Monday morning live starts the Monday of.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Next Monday. No, Labor Day.
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: Labor Day.
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: We're starting on Labor Day. Yeah, sorry about that.
- 1:10:54Speaker 8: Because we work on Labor Day.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:10:56Speaker 8: As in labor.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: And we labor on Labor Day. Labor Day. Labor Day.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: Monday morning live, 8 a.m. Central.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: Next round live, YouTube platform. Next round live, YouTube platform.
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: Everywhere you get the next round, you will get Monday
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: morning live.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Thank you for the reminder. I'd forgotten, Luka Bill.
- 1:11:10Speaker 6: And Jim.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: See you guys. And Jim.
- 1:11:11Speaker 8: See you.
- 1:11:11Speaker 6: Thanks, Luke.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: Take care. Yes, Tom Luka Bill with us. All right.
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: When we come back on the next round presented by
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: Hard Rock Bet on Sport and State, Back into a
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: little college football camp news that's important. And just how
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: crazy is week three going to be? It became official yesterday.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: We get into Oxford, Mississippi, and God bless their police department.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: All that coming up on the next round presented by
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: Hard Rock Bet here on Sporting State. Back with you
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: on the next round presented by Hard Rock Bet. here
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: on Sport and State. A couple of college football camp
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: notes coming up here in just a second. But Todd
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Gurley officially retired from football over the weekend. Nick Chubb.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: Can you believe it was Chubb that retired?
- 1:11:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: Okay, Nick Chubb retired. I thought it was Gurley that retired. No,
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: Nick Chubb.
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: Okay, Chubb.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: Gurley's been out.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: Chubb retired. So Chubb, Sonny Michelle, Todd Gurley, all at
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: Georgia at one time. Crazy running back room. And, you know,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: that's the.
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: Big question when you look at Georgia this year. Like,
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: I think they're going to be– I mean, Nate Frazier
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: was really good. They've got, you know, three or four backs.
- 1:12:21Speaker 5: But do they have the same skill that they used
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: to have? Like, you don't see A.J. Greens anymore at Georgia.
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: You don't see even Alad McConkie or Brock Bowers.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: I think if you look at this Georgia run game,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: you don't have to have Gurley, Michelle, and Chubb because
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: their offensive line is so good. To me, best offensive
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: line in the SEC this year– In Athens, Georgia.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: I could see that.
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I'll give you that. It is just amazing, though,
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: Kirby has made us kind of forget what Georgia used
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: to be. They had all that in the same backfield,
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: and that produced how many national championships at Georgia?
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: That was under Mark Ritt, who was a pretty good coach.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: So he won how many? Zero.
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: I mean, Kirby has made us forget how many players
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: they ran through there without winning a championship.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: How many really good players they ran through there. Some
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: more college football news after I remind you, I'm the
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: coffee drinker on the show, and Crockett Coffee is part
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: of the new show here. It started by Clay Travis,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: Buck Sexton, and Buck's brother Mason. I haven't met Mason yet.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: Can't wait to meet him. They named it after Davy Crockett,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: the hunter, the storyteller, the patriot, the backwoods legend. The
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: look of the logo is right there. It's Davy Crockett.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: You see it on the screen. Davey's surfing on the
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: back of crocodiles in the logo. I've seen that. Yeah.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: That just shows you this coffee means business. 100% pure Arabica,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: high altitude beans, small batch roasted right here in America's heartland.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: It ships fresh roasted, not sitting on a warehouse shelf
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: for six months. Light, medium, dark, decaffeinated, organic, even a
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: mushroom blend, which I'm dying to try. Whole bean grounder
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: in the K-Cups. However you make it in the morning,
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: they've got it for you there at Crockett Coffee. Free
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: shipping on orders of $ 59 or more. And there's a
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: discount for veterans always when it comes to Crockett Coffee.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: And Crockett partners with Tunnels to Towers, building mortgage-free homes
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: for the families of fallen service members and for veterans.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: those injured veterans and first responders. Good coffee, made in America,
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: and also doing some good. CrockettCoffee.com, that's Crockett, C-R-O-C-K-E-T-T, coffee.com, CrockettCoffee.com.
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: I don't want to pick this part. Why is he
- 1:14:46Speaker 5: not surfing on an alligator? I mean, crocodiles really aren't indigenous.
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: To the United States.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Yeah, that was the problem I saw. Yeah. Because I
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: don't think he ever came across a crocodile. He's not
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: surfing on an indigenous animal. He's surfing on a non-indigenous animal.
- 1:14:59Speaker 6: It's like in Temple of Doom when the guy from
- 1:15:04Speaker 6: the Kalima cult falls into the water. He gets eaten
- 1:15:07Speaker 6: by a crocodile, but it is most definitely, clearly a
- 1:15:11Speaker 6: Florida American alligator.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: I think that normal coffee you could serve in the
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: back of two rattlesnakes across a creek, but... Crockett coffee.
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: You could even serve on alligator. Okay. Full alligator.
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: World-wide. Maybe a crocodile. Okay, CBS, and this is a
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: big-picture thing here, but CBS ranked their Big 12 coaches.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: Texas Tech's Joey McGuire, with the best payroll in the
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: Big 12, is ranked third in the league. Yeah. Behind
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: Kalani Satake, who's, by the way, in his 11th year
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: at BYU, and Willie Fritz of Houston. Is that a
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: fair ranking of Joey Maguire?
- 1:15:49Speaker 5: Boy, I will tell you, as much as I talk
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: about these quarterbacks, the coach is massive question mark in
- 1:15:56Speaker 5: the Big 12. Like, I agree, Sataki should be number
- 1:15:59Speaker 5: one right there.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: I wouldn't have Maguire up there. He had one really
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: good year last year. Before that, it was a couple
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: of 7-6s. But I was going to ask the question,
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: how many of those Big 12 coaches have coached in
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: a college football playoff?
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: I mean, Sonny Dykes has.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: He's played for a national championship. Sonny Dykes, Kenny Dillingham,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: and Joey Maguire.
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: I think that's it, right? That's the only one. Sonny Dykes,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: Kenny Dillingham, and Joey Maguire, unless there's one I'm, you know,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: my brain has blinked and I'm just missing one. I mean.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Last year, it would have been Kyle Whittingham would have
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: been number one.
- 1:16:27Speaker 10: Ryan, is that the only, I mean. How much credit
- 1:16:30Speaker 10: are we really giving Joey McGuire for coaching? I mean,
- 1:16:33Speaker 10: it's like Mark Helfrich coached Oregon to a national championship.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: That's the point. That's kind of the point why I
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: brought it up here. He doesn't get credit for it.
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: I mean, I think four years ago it would have
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: been Kyle Whittingham, probably at that point Mike Gundy and
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: Matt Campbell. But there's been so much turnover in the
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: Big 12, and now you look at the coaches. I mean,
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: I don't know who all has got a stable situation.
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: I think Arizona does. I guess Arizona State does. BYU definitely.
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: Baylor could fire their coach this year. Cincinnati could fire
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: their coach. Colorado could fire their coach. Kansas could fire
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: their coach.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: I like the great Alabama song, which is called My
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: Home's in Alabama. I'm southern born and southern bred. This
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: is going to hurt my heart. Power Four Conference coaches,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: Big Ten, one, SEC, two, then ACC or Big 12, third.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: ACC would be third.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: Well, hang on.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: Let's... Yeah, because, I mean, look at this.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: Do you agree with Big Ten 1? Yeah. SEC 2? Dabo?
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: I mean, Dabo's Dabo. I think Braum is respected. Cristobal
- 1:17:42Speaker 5: just based on the run last year. Dave Duren has
- 1:17:44Speaker 5: always been underrated. Bill Belichick, I know it hasn't been
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: at Chapel Hill. I think Narduzzi's underrated. Rhett Lashley has
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: done a great job there. Key at Georgia Tech's done
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: a good job.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: Tony Elliott.
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: What's the national perspective of James Franklin at this point?
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: I was about to bring up James Franklin. Perfect spot.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: I think it's positive.
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure ACC better than the Big 12.
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: For sure.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: So Big 10, SEC, ACC, Big 12. ACC doesn't contend
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: with the SEC, though. No.
- 1:18:14Speaker 9: No.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: Because that's the off-season storyline knock on the SEC is maybe,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: and Kirby brought it up, talking about the Big 10,
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: Kirby Smart on our show, back in the summer, he said,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: you know, maybe their coaching is better than our coaching.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: And I think I jumped in.
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: Oh, come on.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Oh, come on. That's what Joel Platt would say.
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: I think you can go on and say you've got
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: four elite coaches in the SEC with other potentials. I
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: don't know if you guys would agree with this. I
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: think Kalen Abor, I know Alabama fans would laugh.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: And I know they're going to say Lance is going
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: to die on this mountain. Kirby Smart.
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: I hate to put Lane Kiffin in there, but I
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: would put Kiffin. And then I would put Elko. And
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: then Heupel, Sarkeesian, Venables, Drink. I mean, you've got other coaches. Sumrall,
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: you know, year one. Obviously, Golish year one. So much
- 1:19:01Speaker 5: upside for the SEC coaches.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: There's potential for the SEC to pass the Big Ten again.
- 1:19:06Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: For sure.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: It was there for a while, but the SEC could
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: pass the Big Ten in coaching.
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: Going to need some national championships to do it, though.
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: I mean, Kirby can't be the only national championship guy
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: you got and the SEC pass him in coaching because
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: you got multiple guys.
- 1:19:20Speaker 5: But I think there's six other guys that could win
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: one this year and you wouldn't be shocked.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: No, no.
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: But again, one of the national championship guys left the
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: Big Ten, too, in Harbaugh. He's in the NFL now,
- 1:19:28Speaker 3: so you've really only got the two in Day and Cignetti.
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: um so somebody else gonna have to win one but
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: that could happen to your point.
- 1:19:34Speaker 5: Yeah but i mean you know oregon is favored by
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: a lot of people that would be one for landing
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: lincoln riley could have a special year he's still looking
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: for that first national championship he could also get fired
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: matt campbell you know in year one of penn state
- 1:19:49Speaker 5: can do special things with that schedule and daniel brings
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: this up in the chat and those of you that
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: are new to the show you can jump in that
- 1:19:53Speaker 5: youtube chat and uh we we try to get as
- 1:19:56Speaker 5: many of those as we can on the show it
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: moves fast often but He says Josh Pate is adamant
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: that the Big Ten coaching is better because of the staffs,
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: not necessarily the top guy, but the staffs.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: That's something I don't follow as closely. I'm not going
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: to tell you that. Yeah, diving deep. But I am
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: curious if people, maybe Pate is just saying something he's
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: been told by many people in the industry, right? That
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: if you go top to bottom, the overall staffs are
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: better in the Big Ten. But I would give, you know,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: I would give the head coach credit for hiring a
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: great staff.
- 1:20:25Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: And I'm not disagreeing with Josh Pate. I would never
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: do that. You would never do that. Contractually, you're obligated
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: to agree with him. I'm saying that one of the
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: head coach's jobs is to hire a great coaching staff.
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: So..
- 1:20:36Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I'm not using it to discredit the head
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: coaches there. I'm saying if you look at it in totality.
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: Just like they used to say, Nick Saban had the
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: best roster, so of course he should have won. One
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: of the jobs of the head coach was to recruit
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: a great roster. If your coaches are recruiting on that level,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: he's not doing as good a job as Nick Saban. Yeah,
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: and one of those assistants is now in the SEC
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: at Jim Knoll.
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: Would Smuff ask the question? He doesn't ask it, but
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: I'm going to ask it. He says LT will never
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: put Sark in any elite place. So I'll ask the question.
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: Is it win a national championship?
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: Is that the only way? I mean, this is almost
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: Joey Maguire-like, though.
- 1:21:09Speaker 5: I mean, Sarkis had great jobs before at Washington and USC,
- 1:21:14Speaker 5: and now he has done a better job at Texas.
- 1:21:16Speaker 5: But losing three games last year with that talent, if
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: they were to lose three games again this year, yeah,
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: I think it is national championship or bust.
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: I really do.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: Forrester, if you can get me the Texas schedule. I
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: don't know if you have it supported and stated up
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: yet or if you need that.
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: Nope. Well, let's see.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: Real quick, do you guys agree with that, though?
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: I mean, I know you all like Sark, the guy,
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: and it's been an incredible comeback story, and he is
- 1:21:40Speaker 5: one of the best play callers in all of football,
- 1:21:43Speaker 5: but he still has had elite jobs, and he's never
- 1:21:46Speaker 5: won a championship.
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: The SEC is... Shane Beamer's probably on the hottest seat
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: going into the season, but I was on the Conor
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: O'Gara show, and he said, what is your over-under on
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: coaches that are fired in the SEC? And I said,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: one and a half. And he said, that's the number
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: I had. And I said, I would take the under.
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: He said he would take the over. I would take
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: the under. I think one coach gets fired. I don't
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: know which one. Beamer, for some reason, I think he
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: survives this year. I think they have a good enough
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: year at South Carolina. He survives. I think Levy has
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: a good enough year. But those are, I think, the
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: two you would look at. Yeah, the only two, really.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: I mean, Clark Lee is safe, Sark is safe, Elko's safe,
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: Heupel's safe. I don't know if Sark is safe, and
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: that's what I brought up.
- 1:22:30Speaker 5: And that would be absolutely amazing if he got fired
- 1:22:34Speaker 5: this year.
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: Well, if it was 8-4 and you have all that money,
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: and 9-3, because they played Ohio State, they'd still probably
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: make the playoffs. But 8-4, you miss the playoffs. You've
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: basically burned through the Manning years.
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: By the way, 9-3 last year with an Ohio State loss,
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: and they didn't make it.
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: But Ohio State— But you're right. You've wasted Manning if
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: he's that good. Ohio State at home, Tennessee on the road,
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: Oklahoma and Red River, Florida at home, Ole Miss at home,
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: LSU on the road, A & M on the road.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: Seven games, if you've somehow lost four of those, then
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: if you're the money people at Texas— At some point,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: one of those guys with their big cigars is going
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: to say, what are we paying all this money to
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: this guy for? You're right about that.
- 1:23:21Speaker 3: And let me give you another, I guess, twist to that.
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: Do they pull a baseball and go after Elko? The
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: other twist to that was, what if on top of that,
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: A & M and Texas Tech are in the playoffs?
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: And now I'm a Texas booster, big money booster. I'm like,
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: we gave him the best roster. Our main rival is
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: in the playoffs.
- 1:23:40Speaker 6: Worse.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: Yeah. A & M, Texas Tech, Houston, or TCU. Or
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: SMU and Houston. You could have four, really. You want
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: to make it even worse?
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: Oklahoma. Oh, yeah.
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: They're a big rival. Let Oklahoma get in that somehow,
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: and Texas is the one left out. Because you don't
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: get to eight and four unless you lose to Oklahoma. Yeah,
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: that's right. Let's lay it out again. Okay, so we
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: have A & M there. Yeah. You have Oklahoma there.
- 1:24:04Speaker 8: Texas Tech.
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: Oklahoma.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: Texas Tech. SMU. SMU. That's not that crazy. And then
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: either TC or Houston. I mean, right now we're saying
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: Texas Tech is at 12. I'd say two big 12s.
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: I'm just saying one of the two.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I won't go that far. Well, you've already got
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: Texas Tech in. You're not going to get two big
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: 12s in. Oh, yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: I won't go that far, but it's not insane to
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: say Texas A & M, Texas Tech, SMU, and Oklahoma
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: are all in the playoffs and Texas is not. That
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: is not the most insane thing you could say on
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: this show. We've said a lot more insane things.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: Most people watching are like, Oh, Kalen DeBoer's on a
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: bigger hot seat than Steve Sarkeesian. I don't think Kalen
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: DeBoer's on a hot seat. With that $ 87 million contract,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Ryan Grubb's on a hot seat, the Alabama OC. I
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: don't think Kalen DeBoer's on a hot seat. I don't
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: think there's– it would take a– It would take a 6-6.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: A disastrous 6-6 Birmingham Bowl appearance for him to lose
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: his job.
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, 6-6 for Bama this year would be
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: 8-4 for Texas. And then, you know, I do think
- 1:24:56Speaker 5: everything's on the table. But back to your original conversation
- 1:24:58Speaker 5: with Connor, I would play the under one and a half.
- 1:25:01Speaker 5: it's hard for 16 guys to survive with the high
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: stakes and the money they're getting paid right now. And
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: I lean that Beamer would be that guy based on
- 1:25:08Speaker 5: schedule and based on where they were last year. I
- 1:25:10Speaker 5: do think they'll be improved, but I would definitely go
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: under the one and a half. I would be really
- 1:25:14Speaker 5: surprised if you have multiple guys lose their job.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: I agree. You can make that kind of bet to
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: find folks at Hard Rock Bet. They bring you all
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: of the sport and state here, including the next round there.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: When we come back, it's weird to see Cleveland Brown
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: cut player going to LSU. Buccaneer cut player possibly going
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: to LSU. It's not a done deal yet, but some
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: coaches were sounding off. We'll talk about that coming up
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: right here on the next round right here on Sporting State.
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: Don't forget, Week Zero starts this weekend. North Carolina TCU,
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: 11 a.m. Central on ESPN. NC State, Virginia, 230 Central
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: on ESPN. Memphis, UNLV, 9 Central on Fox. That's three
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: pretty good games. And the best game of the day
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: may be a little Jack State, North Dakota State, 430
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: CBS Sports Network. Hey, if you ever need legal issues

- 1:27:14Speaker 1: Klay Travis. It's not official yet, but Daquan Wright looks
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: like he could be on the way from being cut
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: with the Cleveland Browns to going to play with LSU
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: again this season, still being battled out in courts and
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: on the airwaves of shows like ours all over America.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: Here is Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Munkin on one
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: of his players, warming up despite being in the NCAA
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: transfer portal while playing for the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:27:49Speaker 9: How you've been handling the Daquan Wright situation just seems weird, right?
- 1:27:54Speaker 9: It seems like he's in the college transfer portal again
- 1:27:57Speaker 9: in practice, but then I saw him warming up after
- 1:27:59Speaker 9: the rain delay today.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: Crazy.
- 1:28:03Speaker 14: I mean, I don't even know what to say. I mean,
- 1:28:06Speaker 14: as far as I know, he's had a medical issue
- 1:28:10Speaker 14: that wasn't allowing him to to practice. Um, that's a medical,
- 1:28:15Speaker 14: you know, uh, issue. It's nothing to do with me,
- 1:28:19Speaker 14: you know? And then, uh, but, and then he was cleared.
- 1:28:22Speaker 14: So we dressed him just in case we had to
- 1:28:23Speaker 14: have him. But I mean, I don't know what to say.
- 1:28:26Speaker 14: I mean, you know, I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached
- 1:28:31Speaker 14: out a week ago. Now I know, I mean, shit,
- 1:28:33Speaker 14: I didn't know. Now I know I didn't call him back.
- 1:28:35Speaker 14: Now I guess I should have.
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: I love the fact that he ghost Lane.
- 1:28:39Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:28:39Speaker 5: I didn't call him back doesn't call him back uh
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: this is a wild situation and they go on right
- 1:28:44Speaker 5: really good player last year in this old miss offense
- 1:28:48Speaker 5: you know we've got grumpy greg we got greedy greg
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: we had giddy greg talking about greg sankey the sec
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: commissioner Up until this probably comes out and he's just like, damn,
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: Lane's done this again. I know there was an injunction filed.
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: He's got to clear waivers first. But there is no
- 1:29:03Speaker 5: way Sankey doesn't push back on this.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: Well, I mean, the pushback for Sankey is an internal
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: SEC rule that you cannot transfer from one SEC school
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: to another, even legally in the portal. This would technically
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: be that because of the last college he played for.
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: It has to be.
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: So that's where Sankey, that's legislation they all agreed to
- 1:29:22Speaker 3: and voted on. So that's where he's got to go
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: to bat. And protect the other 15 schools because all
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: 16 schools voted on that and it passed. So he's
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: going to have to battle that. This is why Andrew Brandt,
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: who's in the media world now, but he worked in
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: the NFL for a long time, he says, I have
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: talked to multiple NFL front office people that say players
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: are coming to them saying, can you go ahead and
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: cut me? Yeah, so I can get back.
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: So I can get back in the pool before the
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: season starts. They know they're going to get cut anyway.
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: I know this is a business now with the money
- 1:29:51Speaker 5: these guys are making. But there was a time where
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: it meant something for your guys to be able to–
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: your 100 or your 85 scholarship guys and your 100-plus
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: guys that were busting their ass in the spring and
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: the summer, and they earned a spot on that roster.
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: If Daquan Wright gets cleared and he is playing for LSU,
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: I would assume you've got to get somebody off that
- 1:30:13Speaker 5: roster that has been busting their ass.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: Well, I will use– I'll use Ole Miss baseball as
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: an example. They lost– I can't remember. I think it's–
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: I know one of them is their first baseman. My
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: buddy Johnny was telling me about this on the golf course.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: And maybe their third baseman. And both of them went
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: into the draft. Or no, they were out of eligibility
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: because of the four years. They passed this 5-5, and
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: now because it's an injunction, they're coming back to school. Well,
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: they had paid this money to get this stud first
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: baseman who was this big hitter and a third baseman
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: to come play for Ole Miss this year. And now
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: you've got your two guys who are coming back from
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: last year coming back on the team. And these two guys,
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: now they're getting paid, but they came thinking they were
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: going to be starting at Ole Miss.
- 1:30:58Speaker 5: Well, this complicates everything because Ole Miss has only got
- 1:31:01Speaker 5: so much money they can pay in NIL for baseball.
- 1:31:03Speaker 5: And now you've got four different guys you've got to pay.
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: Ultimately, Dan Lanning is the first of what every coach
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: should be doing because I know it's going to help
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: Lane and Ole Miss and whoever else tries to get
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: these kind of players. But ultimately, Dan Lanning is a
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: national championship contender. This is what he believes.
- 1:31:22Speaker 12: Your thoughts just on guys coming from the NFL back
- 1:31:26Speaker 12: to college. I know you guys aren't really interested in
- 1:31:28Speaker 12: the five for five, but just the state of college
- 1:31:31Speaker 12: athletics right now from college every sport just seems like
- 1:31:34Speaker 12: who's eligible. You don't really know what's your, your feelings
- 1:31:36Speaker 12: on that.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:37Speaker 15: I mean, I think there's a lot of negatives that
- 1:31:40Speaker 15: are involved around this one. Once you go to the NFL,
- 1:31:42Speaker 15: to me, you're in the NFL, you don't get the
- 1:31:44Speaker 15: opportunity to come back to, you know, most of us
- 1:31:46Speaker 15: have built our rosters and you have a limited roster
- 1:31:49Speaker 15: limit now. So if you invited somebody back to your team,
- 1:31:51Speaker 15: that means you're kicking somebody else off your team, right.
- 1:31:53Speaker 8: To match your roster limits.
- 1:31:54Speaker 15: I don't think that's fair to the players that worked
- 1:31:56Speaker 15: all summer, all spring, um, and put themselves in position
- 1:31:59Speaker 15: to be ready to work for a team, um, you know,
- 1:32:01Speaker 15: to have somebody come back. But ultimately, you know, it
- 1:32:04Speaker 15: used to be once you had an agent or once
- 1:32:05Speaker 15: you went and did the combine or once you went
- 1:32:08Speaker 15: to many, I mean, all those things qualified as you
- 1:32:09Speaker 15: are no longer an amateur, you're a professional now, once
- 1:32:12Speaker 15: you declare for the draft. So to let any of
- 1:32:14Speaker 15: those players come back, you know, fair or unfair to them,
- 1:32:17Speaker 15: it's unfair to the sport. And I think it's unfair
- 1:32:19Speaker 15: to the players that are on current teams, you know,
- 1:32:21Speaker 15: for those guys to be coming back.
- 1:32:23Speaker 5: I do think that it's a little unique to, that
- 1:32:26Speaker 5: now we got five and five this year should clear
- 1:32:28Speaker 5: it up though right like after this year i mean
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: it is pretty set in stone five years or five
- 1:32:35Speaker 5: years of eligibility in five years until some guy goes
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: back and sues and says i only got four years
- 1:32:41Speaker 5: and what does the court do then i don't you
- 1:32:43Speaker 5: know courts do anything now and that's the whole thing
- 1:32:45Speaker 5: about this i don't know.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: Like and i assume that's five and five now where
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: even if i blow out my knee like some guys
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: have in camp i'm not gonna play the whole year
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: if i'm out of my five i'm out of my
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: five it's just tough break back to the start of
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: our show we were talking about austin mack not getting
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: the bama starting job and someone in the chat said
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: austin mack is a senior but i don't even know
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: what that means anymore yeah no he's got a year
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: yeah he's got a year he's only i know but
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: you understand what they're saying he's a senior i don't
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: even know what that means anymore and whether he's got
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: another year or not like just because the guy's a
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: senior just because the guy's junior it really means nothing
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: anymore and i and as dan lanning says but now
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: do you guys honestly believe let's play this out Dante
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: Moore went to the NFL, didn't get drafted where he
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: thought he was going to, has struggled a little bit.
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: And preseason is like, I needed another year at Oregon.
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: And he goes back and he goes, nah, we're good.
- 1:33:33Speaker 8: Oh, no.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: No, I do. You believe that? I believe Dan Lanning
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: is a man of his word. He would be starting.
- 1:33:37Speaker 5: If Raiola is blowing up, yeah. But if not, I
- 1:33:43Speaker 5: go with you, Brown. I think Dante Moore would be back,
- 1:33:46Speaker 5: and he would, hey, look, this is unique.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: Boy, that would be the test of his stance right there.
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: If that had happened, now obviously that's a huge what if.
- 1:33:54Speaker 5: Or if he says, hey, we can't have the competitive advantage,
- 1:33:56Speaker 5: like everybody's got a competitive advantage over us because everybody
- 1:33:58Speaker 5: else is doing it.
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: Now we have the opportunity to do it. I don't
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: like it, but it's.
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: The way it is now. I mean, Landmine Believer is
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: right now. He's a Bama guy. But, boy, the outrage
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: over Betty Occo seems small potatoes now compared to this.
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. All right, when we come back, final thoughts.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: Game day is going to be at the Lane Kiffin Show,
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: LSU Ole Miss. It's not the only superstar that's going
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: to be there that weekend. God bless the Oxford Police
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: Department when we come back on TNR, presented by Hard
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: Rock Bet on Sporting State. All right, final part of

- 1:35:11Speaker 1: at Next Round Live. College game day made it official
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: over the weekend. They will be in Oxford, Mississippi week three.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: No surprise. Nick Saban's been talking about it openly since
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: SEC media days. LSU at Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin's return.
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: Did you know Thursday night, before the circus rolls into town,
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: Ella Langley is choosing Texas in Oxford, Mississippi. Wow, is
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: she doing the pavilion? Yeah, I think so. She's doing
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: an arena tour because she's at Neville in Auburn. So
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: Ella Langley on Thursday and the circus on Friday and
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: Saturday for LSU Ole Miss weekend. I don't know how
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: big the Oxford Police Department is, but God bless them.
- 1:35:53Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, they have to be like, you've got
- 1:35:54Speaker 5: to be kidding. Now, game day is coming in. I
- 1:35:57Speaker 5: guess they already knew this before.
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they had planned on game day, but then,
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: I mean, they'll be exhausted. You've got to do traffic
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: and security for Ella, or traffic for Ella Langley, traffic
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: for game day, traffic for the freaking game, and security.
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: I mean, my Lord.
- 1:36:12Speaker 5: You guys have been there since I've been there, because
- 1:36:14Speaker 5: y'all went, you know, the back-to-back years, I guess, Hugh
- 1:36:17Speaker 5: Freeze beat Nick Saban. I haven't been to Oxford in
- 1:36:20Speaker 5: probably 20 years, but I thought the infrastructure was kind
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: of weak back then. Like a lot of SEC towns,
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: they didn't have the hotels. The Grove was way too much.
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: I would assume.
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: I think I was there and people who are watching
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: in Mississippi, let me know. I think I was there.
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: I can't remember if you were with me or not.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: Katy Perry weekend. Were you with me? I did not
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: go to that one.
- 1:36:44Speaker 4: I was there.
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: Katy Perry weekend when Katy Perry was on game day.
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: and they basically had the National Guard set checkpoints up,
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: and there were so many people in town, you couldn't
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: go inside the perimeter of downtown Oxford because the streets
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: were too crowded. So you had to pass a checkpoint
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: of National Guard people just to go to downtown. I
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: think that's the most crowded Oxford, Mississippi has ever been
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: until this weekend. Week three.
- 1:37:17Speaker 5: Do you think somebody would trade a front row seat
- 1:37:20Speaker 5: to Ella Langley for a nosebleed to LSU Ole Miss?
- 1:37:26Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: I mean, because get-ins are $ 600. For Ella Langley or
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: LSU Ole Miss?
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: No, for LSU Ole Miss.
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: Oh, is that it?
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: That's a low get-in. That's a get-in. Yeah, but $ 600.
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: That's low for this game. I mean, I would have
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: fought over $ 1, 000. Wow. Listen, I'm bad at— Probably since
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: the one Jim was talking about, I could be off
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: on that one. Probably, but still 600 for a get in.
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: It's pretty steep. I bet Brooks remembers this. Maybe Forrester.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: Who was the quarterback that she sort of flirted with?
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: Trevor Knight. Trevor Knight. Lance got it. She shouted him
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: out during game day, right?
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: She had no idea who he was.
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: She did. She did the call.
- 1:38:06Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: I think she did that trip call. Yeah, when she
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: was making her picks, she had corn dogs, too, when
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: she was making an LSU pick. She did a damn
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: stage dive from whatever bar she was in. Yeah, after
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: the game that night. After the game. And she stayed
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: for the game. I mean, she was in the stands
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: and on the sidelines for the game. I'm sure somebody's
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: got a story. And that was a field rush, right?
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: That was a field rush. Of course it was. It
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: was a Nick Saban loss. They all came with a
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: field rush.
- 1:38:29Speaker 8: Didn't they?
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: Not just Nick Saban. It's Alabama in general.
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: Yeah, but the Saban era was one field rush. Well,
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: it wasn't one after another because they rarely lost, but
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: They all came with a film cast.
- 1:38:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't want to say this will be the
- 1:38:39Speaker 5: most amazing scene or atmosphere we've seen in the history.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: Of college football.
- 1:38:44Speaker 5: It's going to be tough to top 2011 in Tuscaloosa. 2011, 2019, LSU, Alabama,
- 1:38:50Speaker 5: both of those. I was at both. I don't know
- 1:38:54Speaker 5: how you could have more than what you had with Oxford.
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: Now, I would not rule out President Trump also being there,
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: but President Trump was at one of those, which anytime
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: the president comes in.
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: He's not showing up in Oxford.
- 1:39:04Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: That guy loves going to sporting events. I know he does.
- 1:39:08Speaker 7: I mean, if it's the biggest game of the season,
- 1:39:10Speaker 7: all the more reason for him to show up.
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: I don't know that it is the biggest game of
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: the season. It's going to be one of the most anticipated.
- 1:39:15Speaker 7: All right, biggest SEC matchup of the season.
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, maybe so. I didn't mean to. I mean,
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: it could end up being the biggest game. It'll be
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: the biggest circus by far. The biggest circus for sure.
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: And maybe that'll drag him in, too. Yeah, that is
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: the one thing the Oxford Police Department are sentencing. Oh,
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: my gosh.
- 1:39:30Speaker 10: There was an estimated 150,000 people on campus at Tuscaloosa
- 1:39:34Speaker 10: for the Game of the Century in 2011.
- 1:39:35Speaker 4: Do you think this will exceed that?
- 1:39:38Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: And I'm with Lance. We don't talk about it enough.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: There may have been just as many people there for
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: 2019 Alabama LSU. I think there was. Including the president.
- 1:39:47Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: It gets forgotten how big that one was because it
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: doesn't get called the Game of the Century like 2011 did.
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: But, yes, to Brooks' question, I think Oxford, Mississippi– We'll
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: hit critical mass. There'll be more people than the city
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: can handle by a bunch that day.
- 1:40:01Speaker 10: Well, and what's crazy about that is, you know, Brian
- 1:40:03Speaker 10: Denny seats 100,000. So there was maybe 50,000 outside the stadium.
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I think your number is low. I think there's 100.
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: 150,000 outside the stadium.
- 1:40:14Speaker 10: Maybe there was, but my point being, there's only 67,000 seats.
- 1:40:17Speaker 10: That's right.
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: Much smaller. If there's that many people there, how many
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: are going to be outside the stadium?
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: That's why I thought the ticket would be higher. Final
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: 30 minutes of the show here. Missouri's Ahmad Hardy looks
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: like he's coming back mid-September, according to Drink.
- 1:40:31Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, look, that's good news that Missouri should
- 1:40:33Speaker 5: be able to get him at 100%. I'm trying to
- 1:40:35Speaker 5: remember Missouri's early schedule. Like, what games will he miss?
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: Some meaningful games, but not the heart of the schedule.
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: SMU is getting Kevin Jennings back to practice. He's been
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: battling a jammed finger. He should get two weeks of prep,
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: according to Rhett Lashley, and be able to go in
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: the Labor Day Nights opener, SMU at Florida State, in
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: the new rebuilt Doak on a Monday night. That's the
