- 0:11Hello friends, it is Sean here and it is another day where you
- 0:17have invited me into your routine as we read together
- 0:20another chapter of God's Word. And today is the 2nd of August.
- 0:24It is a Wednesday and the 2nd of August is quite an amazing Day
- 0:29in History. Just having a look through the
- 0:31history books during the First World War on this day.
- 0:35This is the day that Great Britain gets mobilized and joins
- 0:39the war. It's also the day that Russian
- 0:43troops invade Eastern Prussia. And fascinatingly, on this day,
- 0:49Turkey and Nazi Germany quietly in the background, form a secret
- 0:54Treaty of alliance. And then on this day, 30 years
- 0:57later, toward the end of the Second World War, Turkey
- 1:00formally abandons their diplomatic relationship with
- 1:03Nazi Germany. Ah, the tides of humanity.
- 1:07You know, as we read the Old Testament, we think, ah, these
- 1:09nations rise and fall. We're still doing it today,
- 1:12aren't we? It's just the way of the world.
- 1:15So today we will continue reading.
- 1:17This is a much shorter reading. This is God declaring judgments
- 1:22on Moab through the prophet Isaiah.
- 1:25So join me friends, as we read together.
- 1:27Isaiah, chapter 15. This message came to me
- 1:41concerning Moab. In one night the town of AR will
- 1:46be leveled and the city of Kerr will be destroyed.
- 1:51Your people will go to their temple in Dibonne to mourn.
- 1:54They will go to the sacred shrines to weep.
- 1:58They will wail for the fate of Nebo and Madiba, shaving their
- 2:02heads in sorrow and cutting off their beards.
- 2:05They will wear burlap as they wander the streets from every
- 2:09home in public square will come the sound of wailing.
- 2:13The people of Heshbon and Aliyila will cry out.
- 2:17Their voices will be heard as far away as J has.
- 2:21The bravest warriors of Mohab will cry out in utter terror.
- 2:26They will be helpless with fear. My heart weeps for Moab.
- 2:33Its people will flee to Zoa and Eglath, Shelisia.
- 2:37Weeping, they climb the road to Luhith.
- 2:41Their cries of distress can be heard all along the road to
- 2:44Hornaim. Even the waters of Nimrim are
- 2:48dried up. The grassy banks are scorched.
- 2:52The tender plants are gone. Nothing green remains.
- 2:56The people grab their possessions and carry them
- 2:59across the ravine of willows. A cry of distress echoes through
- 3:04the land of Moab. From one end to the other, from
- 3:08egglame to bear a limb. The stream near Dibbon runs red
- 3:14with blood. But I'm still not finished with
- 3:17Dibbon lions will hunt down the survivors, both those who try to
- 3:22escape and those who remain behind.
- 3:36Lord, as we read these verses of judgments, it would be easy for
- 3:41us to think that you have a pernicious streak and angry,
- 3:45vengeful streak. But here we read these words
- 3:50that even in the midst of your judgments on this evil nation,
- 3:54you weep for these people. Your heart breaks for them, as
- 4:00they have urged, so far away from the way that you wish your
- 4:05people to live. Thank you that you are a God who
- 4:11rules with your heart, who loves, who reaches out, who
- 4:15restores yes you discipline, but this always happens in a
- 4:21relationship of fatherly love and affection.
- 4:28Help us to continue to live our lives with this ongoing stance
- 4:35of love, your love that we can share it with the world around
- 4:40us that is in such desperate need of that as a foundation
- 4:45from which to live, shape us to be more like you, our God.
- 4:52We pray all this in the name of Jesus.
- 4:55Amen.
