- 1:00Speaker 3: a wonderful week and you are getting ready for a
- 1:03Speaker 3: great weekend ahead. It looks like the weather's going to
- 1:05Speaker 3: be terrific this weekend. Finally, I think the rain will
- 1:09Speaker 3: take a break. Let the rain take a little vacation.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I'm Christine Nicholas, usually I am joining Kevin McCullough, the
- 1:17Speaker 3: host of Radio Night Live, and Kevin is on vacation.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Speaking of vacations, we're sending Kevin on a vacation, so
- 1:24Speaker 3: but he will be back on Monday, and we hope
- 1:28Speaker 3: Kevin has a great time with his beautiful family. But
- 1:31Speaker 3: I am joined in the studio by Alexandra Byrne, the
- 1:34Speaker 3: wonderful ab who helps produce our show. Hey, b how's
- 1:38Speaker 3: how'd your estine? Oh my gosh, you know what? This
- 1:41Speaker 3: week was jam act but so much fun. We did
- 1:44Speaker 3: so much stuff. To speak Christine, we did. Yeah. I mean,
- 1:48Speaker 3: it's not every day that you open up a twenty
- 1:51Speaker 3: thousand square foot mega retail store dedicated to fandoms from everywhere.
- 1:56Speaker 3: I think Harry Potter, Vikings, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things,
- 2:01Speaker 3: Miss Kelle, Superman, Yeah, hell okay, yeah, but that's House
- 2:06Speaker 3: of Spells. House of Spells opened up this week. Officially,
- 2:10Speaker 3: they are known in the UK. They have three House
- 2:12Speaker 3: of Spells in England and this is their very first,
- 2:17Speaker 3: their very first store. Their planting the flag right here
- 2:21Speaker 3: in Times Square on forty second Street in the United States,
- 2:24Speaker 3: and they picked this location thanks to Tom Harris and
- 2:29Speaker 3: the Times Square Alliance because of the vibrancy, and not
- 2:33Speaker 3: to mention to the visitors that have come by, but
- 2:37Speaker 3: also the New Yorkers that every day are walking on
- 2:39Speaker 3: forty second Street, you know, because they're coming from the
- 2:42Speaker 3: Port Authority bus terminal, or they're coming from Grand Central
- 2:46Speaker 3: on the other end of forty second Street. So it
- 2:48Speaker 3: was it's really hopping. They're doing quite well. They did
- 2:51Speaker 3: a soft opening for three weeks and I got to
- 2:54Speaker 3: tell you, Abe, they are having the only problem, and
- 2:58Speaker 3: it's a good problem to have. They're having trouble keeping
- 3:01Speaker 3: inventory flowing because it's flying. I mean, and it's not
- 3:05Speaker 3: saying it's flying out the door. People are buying. They
- 3:08Speaker 3: are buying and flying out the door. And you know
- 3:13Speaker 3: what we did for the opening, which was really special,
- 3:16Speaker 3: and we've had Jamie Allen from Amaze come on show.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Jamie Allen is a UK tech magician, illusionist. He has
- 3:26Speaker 3: an award winning show on right off of Broadway. It's
- 3:29Speaker 3: at the New World Stages. It is just if you
- 3:32Speaker 3: haven't seen it yet, folks, you know, book your tickets now.
- 3:35Speaker 3: It does sell out. You want to make sure that
- 3:37Speaker 3: you book when Jamie Allen is performing. But it is
- 3:40Speaker 3: a wonderful story about his life growing up in England.
- 3:44Speaker 3: That was the connection with House of Spells. He knew
- 3:47Speaker 3: of House of Spells from living and growing up in England,
- 3:51Speaker 3: and he grew up at Stratford upon Avon, right where
- 3:53Speaker 3: there is a House of Spells. But he grew up
- 3:55Speaker 3: on the second floor of a pub that his parents
- 3:59Speaker 3: own and he would perform. They were both musicians. This
- 4:03Speaker 3: was a pub and the parents would perform and then
- 4:05Speaker 3: at the breaks he would perform magic. Go see a
- 4:08Speaker 3: mays Enjoy Jamie Allen. He was the official spell breaker
- 4:13Speaker 3: at House of Spells. And then we cut the ribbon.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I want to give special thanks also to our borough
- 4:18Speaker 3: President Brad Hoyle, Nan Siegel, the Best News, City Council
- 4:22Speaker 3: member Carl Wilson. He was there for the festivities, and
- 4:26Speaker 3: so was Tom Harris and NYC Tourism and New forty
- 4:31Speaker 3: two was there. It was really a fantastic showing. I
- 4:33Speaker 3: think they had like two hundred people there was That
- 4:36Speaker 3: was Bob.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Fun exactly and also fun fact Happy birthday to Harry
- 4:41Speaker 4: Potter himself. Yes, so very exciting and also what I noticed, Christine,
- 4:45Speaker 4: it was my first time heading over to House of Spells.
- 4:48Speaker 4: And while I was walking over, which is a beautiful
- 4:50Speaker 4: walk from our office which is right near Times Square,
- 4:53Speaker 4: I noticed that the Curse Child is directly across from
- 4:57Speaker 4: House of Spells. So what fun thing for people to
- 5:00Speaker 4: go see you know, the Chris Child of course on
- 5:03Speaker 4: Broadway and then head over to House to Spells and
- 5:06Speaker 4: experience not only Harry Potter but also so many different fandoms.
- 5:09Speaker 4: So congratulations to hire me to Kaja enter a feek
- 5:13Speaker 4: as well.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Job well done. Yeah, it was really terrific. That was
- 5:17Speaker 3: a great day. I finished my day by going downtown.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Actually no, it was just a far west side with
- 5:24Speaker 3: Zachary Stewart from Theomaniac. Yeah, but we went to go
- 5:29Speaker 3: check out an off Broadway show that Linda Perillo, who
- 5:33Speaker 3: you all know from from Tuesday Travel Tuesday. Linda Perillo
- 5:37Speaker 3: gave me the sort of the tip that her daughter,
- 5:40Speaker 3: Valentina Zazzali, she's the star of a show called My Way,
- 5:46Speaker 3: which it's fantastic, Ava her sister is the stage manager.
- 5:52Speaker 3: I was with Linda with Zach we were with a
- 5:54Speaker 3: number of the Perilo kids family, and I don't really
- 5:59Speaker 3: Linda never saw the show before. Oh wow, and now
- 6:04Speaker 3: Valentina wrote it, and it really it's a story about
- 6:07Speaker 3: Frank Sinatra's ghost and he comes to visit her while
- 6:11Speaker 3: she's trying to write a eulogy of her grandfather. Now
- 6:14Speaker 3: she's not Linda Pirillo or Mario Perrillo's grand daughter in
- 6:19Speaker 3: the play, she's just she's just a character. But as
- 6:23Speaker 3: the play progresses, we realize she's talking about Mario Pirillo
- 6:27Speaker 3: and I got chills and in her throat because it
- 6:31Speaker 3: was really a beautiful tribute and music plays such a
- 6:34Speaker 3: strong role in memory and core memories. It was the
- 6:38Speaker 3: Frank Sinatra, you know, those songs that was playing throughout it,
- 6:43Speaker 3: and it was just so I want to thank Linda
- 6:46Speaker 3: Pirillo for including us and that that was really terrific.
- 6:50Speaker 3: And Linda Pillo also remember she has this wonderful book
- 6:54Speaker 3: that's out you guys can pick it up. It's called
- 6:56Speaker 3: Your Payment. Method has been more about Linda's growing up,
- 7:02Speaker 3: not only as the daughter of Maria Parolo, but what
- 7:05Speaker 3: happened after Marioparolo passed, and it's not pretty. She really
- 7:10Speaker 3: tells it out. We're also going to join Linda and Kevin,
- 7:13Speaker 3: and we're going to join Peter Madonia our good friend.
- 7:16Speaker 3: We're all going up to Arthur Avenue on September first.
- 7:19Speaker 3: If people want to come, there are tickets and we
- 7:22Speaker 3: will all be there at Marios with Regina who is
- 7:25Speaker 3: the host of Marios. It's going to be a lot
- 7:27Speaker 3: of fun and we hope to see you because we
- 7:29Speaker 3: talk a lot about Arthur Avenue. But it's about time
- 7:31Speaker 3: that we feast on Arthur Avenue and it's right before
- 7:34Speaker 3: Far Augusta. So what better way to prepare for Far
- 7:37Speaker 3: Augusta than head up to Arthur Avenue September first, Tuesday,
- 7:41Speaker 3: September first. We'll be there at Marios for broadcast and dinner.
- 7:45Speaker 3: You can get more information by looking up. Just go
- 7:48Speaker 3: to ab at Nicholas Lenz dot com and you can
- 7:51Speaker 3: percase in tickets. We also talk about finding our way
- 7:56Speaker 3: around the city. Josh Noler and Jasmine Curtis, they represented
- 8:01Speaker 3: us at Harlem today one twenty fifth Street for a
- 8:04Speaker 3: way finding unveiling with Barbara Askins who has led the
- 8:09Speaker 3: one hundred and twenty fifth Street Champion three years and
- 8:13Speaker 3: Sea Virginia Fields. Remember our borough President. She was there
- 8:16Speaker 3: absolutely unveil the new bus stop and the beautiful wayfinding
- 8:21Speaker 3: and mural, and then Aby you sent me in a
- 8:24Speaker 3: very interesting article in Cranes by our good friend Aaron
- 8:28Speaker 3: Elstein about the Empire State Building the Observation Tower, which
- 8:32Speaker 3: is one of my favorites. I absolutely love it. It's
- 8:34Speaker 3: a classic. But they have been down in I.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Know, Christine, you know, it's so it's so unfortunate because
- 8:42Speaker 4: the Empire State Building is ninety five years old and
- 8:46Speaker 4: it is just iconic. It is so amazing, and we
- 8:50Speaker 4: have so many observation decks now, one Times Square, Summit,
- 8:54Speaker 4: one Vandwild I know will be actually welcoming Nostasia Welter
- 8:58Speaker 4: next week to the show The End.
- 9:01Speaker 3: She's a new kid on the block, I know.
- 9:04Speaker 4: But you know what, I think one of the things
- 9:05Speaker 4: that I'll say, and I know we're going to be
- 9:07Speaker 4: wrapping up soon, but one of the things that I'll
- 9:09Speaker 4: say is New York is resilient and there's a reason
- 9:13Speaker 4: why the Empire State Building has continued to prosper. And
- 9:18Speaker 4: sometimes we dwell on negative things, but guess what, I'm
- 9:21Speaker 4: sure everything is going to be going up soon.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Last House, well for sure, and I think it's just
- 9:26Speaker 3: because a lot of there are a lot of other
- 9:28Speaker 3: observation Decks, so a bit of it is competition. But
- 9:31Speaker 3: Natasia Welter will be our guest next Friday evening. She
- 9:35Speaker 3: is the executive director for Tourism at Summit one Vanderbilt.
- 9:39Speaker 3: So tune in, but folks, don't go away, because we
- 9:42Speaker 3: have two very special guests coming your way. What we
- 9:44Speaker 3: have we have Tom Harris from the Times Square Alliance
- 9:48Speaker 3: is going to be talking about all fun things T Square.
- 9:51Speaker 3: And then of course we're going to bring back our
- 9:53Speaker 3: baseball boys, our baseball buddies tracing your print and Marty
- 9:56Speaker 3: Appell to talk about the Mets and the Yankees the
- 10:00Speaker 3: second half of the season. So don't go away. Radio
- 10:02Speaker 3: Night Live Christine Nicholas wishing the best for Kevin McCullough.
- 10:06Speaker 3: See you soon from New York.
- 10:12Speaker 2: It's Radio Night Live with Kevin McCulloch.
- 10:16Speaker 3: All right, folks, we are back. This is Christine Nicholas
- 10:20Speaker 3: Radio Night Live. Thanks for joining us on Fun Friday.
- 10:23Speaker 3: AB Alexandra Byrne my right, Albrey, amazing, Thanks so much.
- 10:29Speaker 3: AB always who needs Kevin when you have AB? I
- 10:32Speaker 3: think we can handle this right. We should just tell
- 10:34Speaker 3: Kevin to take an extended break, just enjoy your time, keV.
- 10:38Speaker 3: We miss you, but do we? Oh well, you know
- 10:42Speaker 3: what we do, and Kevin deserves a vacation. He works
- 10:45Speaker 3: very hard. But coming up in the studio right now,
- 10:49Speaker 3: let's welcome our good friend from Times Square and a
- 10:51Speaker 3: good friend of Kevin McCall's as well, Tom T Square Harris.
- 10:55Speaker 3: How you doing, Tom Harris?
- 10:57Speaker 5: I'm doing great.
- 10:58Speaker 6: Thanks so much for having me on then, and both
- 11:00Speaker 6: of you could be actresses on Broadway with the way
- 11:04Speaker 6: you pretended to miss Kevin.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Oh well, we do, we do, we do?
- 11:08Speaker 5: Sure, I'm sure yep.
- 11:11Speaker 4: No.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Time Square has been so busy this summer unbelievable. And
- 11:17Speaker 3: by the way, Tom Harris, what you've been able to
- 11:21Speaker 3: do by making Times Square sort of this mecca for
- 11:25Speaker 3: the World Cup folks, because we haven't had you on
- 11:28Speaker 3: since June when World Cup wasn't even really in full gear.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Was before the Norwegians came, the Vikings, the Scottish, oh
- 11:36Speaker 3: my goodness, well, the Canadians they were very short lived,
- 11:39Speaker 3: but they came. But tell us, you know what was
- 11:42Speaker 3: that experience for the Times Square Alliance and the good
- 11:46Speaker 3: folks that work with you to basically have these takeovers
- 11:51Speaker 3: of nationalities come in and really celebrate their nationalities.
- 11:57Speaker 6: It was really amazing, and we worked with the city
- 11:59Speaker 6: very close beforehand, and we never thought that we needed
- 12:03Speaker 6: any watch parties in Times Square.
- 12:05Speaker 5: There's plenty to watch in Times Square.
- 12:07Speaker 6: And we sort of just opened up Time Square to
- 12:10Speaker 6: the world and the world came out and from the
- 12:13Speaker 6: amazing Viking row on the Red Steps to the Mexicans
- 12:19Speaker 6: to every nationality, every team was in Times Square celebrating
- 12:24Speaker 6: and it was really a fantastic moment in time And
- 12:27Speaker 6: just to quantify it, we were down because of the weather,
- 12:30Speaker 6: and we were down slightly in our pedestrian accounts going
- 12:33Speaker 6: into June tenth, and from June tenth through July nineteenth
- 12:39Speaker 6: we were up twelve percent. So now we are positive
- 12:42Speaker 6: for the year in Times Square with the pedestrian counts.
- 12:45Speaker 5: So it really was a huge bump for us.
- 12:49Speaker 6: Created a lot of energy and excitement and we're keeping
- 12:52Speaker 6: up the momentum with a lot of fun things going on.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Well, that's fantastic. It really was beautiful to see. And
- 12:59Speaker 3: you know, yesterday I was with Tom Harris when you
- 13:02Speaker 3: introduced the new chief of NYPD over in Times Square.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Tell us a little bit about that.
- 13:09Speaker 5: Wow.
- 13:10Speaker 6: Chief Eager came to us from Staten Islands, twenty eight
- 13:13Speaker 6: years of experience. She met the folks from Midtown yesterday,
- 13:17Speaker 6: and she really didn't get a break. I think June
- 13:20Speaker 6: twenty fourth, I think she came. She dealt with the Knicks,
- 13:24Speaker 6: she dealt with the World Cup. She hit the ground running,
- 13:28Speaker 6: didn't skip a beat. The Police Commissioner Tish and Chief
- 13:33Speaker 6: Lapetrie really focused on Times Square during these times, and
- 13:37Speaker 6: we had extra police offices.
- 13:39Speaker 5: Crime has never been lower.
- 13:41Speaker 6: They made sure that everyone who came had a safe experience.
- 13:44Speaker 6: So we welcomed Chief Eager to the borough. We fully
- 13:48Speaker 6: support Horror and the men and women of the New
- 13:50Speaker 6: York City Police Department, and we were looking forward to
- 13:53Speaker 6: a long relationship with her.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Well, Aby, who works with me on the Broadway Association,
- 14:00Speaker 3: agreed to be our speaker in September. It's going to
- 14:02Speaker 3: be wonderful for you to get to meet her. A. B.
- 14:04Speaker 3: I maybe I don't know. Do you watch Do you
- 14:06Speaker 3: watch Elizabeth or Elsbeth?
- 14:09Speaker 5: No?
- 14:09Speaker 3: I don't see. Oh, it's a CBS show. It's after
- 14:12Speaker 3: Matt Locke. Tom and I are both fans. But I mean, Chief,
- 14:16Speaker 3: this is what happens when you get into your fifties.
- 14:18Speaker 6: Ab you you just watch DVR.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Your dv TV radio too, you watch the network.
- 14:27Speaker 6: You listen to radio, you get up at four am.
- 14:30Speaker 5: But Elsbeth is a great show.
- 14:32Speaker 6: And Christine thought that Chief Eager could could have a
- 14:36Speaker 6: walk on her at least a recurring part. She she
- 14:39Speaker 6: really is phenomenal and represents the police department.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Well, she's tough as nails. Tough as nails. I can't
- 14:46Speaker 3: wait to get to work with her. So thank you
- 14:48Speaker 3: for making the introduction. Also at the Times Square Alliance
- 14:52Speaker 3: meeting yesterday, for the introduction, I was able to thank
- 14:55Speaker 3: another chief who.
- 14:59Speaker 5: Is it Boudette, Oh, to Jimmy Bodette.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Yes, yes, Jimmy Bodette, who is also Central casting. But
- 15:06Speaker 3: what he did during the Taylor Swift wedding was classic.
- 15:11Speaker 3: He held a bullhorn out of right outside of Penn
- 15:15Speaker 3: Station and he would just quote little Taylor Swift songs
- 15:20Speaker 3: like lyrics, but they were with like pedestrians. And you know,
- 15:25Speaker 3: you've got to look this up. It's on TikTok it is.
- 15:29Speaker 3: I think it has really given the NYPD a softer image,
- 15:32Speaker 3: but you know, it's really a beautiful thing. Before we
- 15:36Speaker 3: wrap up, how is it going with a brand new
- 15:39Speaker 3: opening two days ago? House of Spells. You were there,
- 15:43Speaker 3: you serving as MC.
- 15:45Speaker 5: We're all together, we were all together.
- 15:47Speaker 6: Yes, such a great addition to Times Square, to forty
- 15:50Speaker 6: second Street.
- 15:50Speaker 5: It's really going to make the block come alive.
- 15:53Speaker 6: We expected to drive a lot of new folks, a
- 15:56Speaker 6: lot of these people who have these cult followings for
- 16:00Speaker 6: for Harry Potter and all of the other shows that
- 16:03Speaker 6: they feature. It really was so so, so well done,
- 16:09Speaker 6: and I wish them a lot of success, and we're.
- 16:12Speaker 5: There to support them.
- 16:13Speaker 6: So well done to you on all the publicity that
- 16:17Speaker 6: that that the place got, and I wish him all
- 16:21Speaker 6: the best of luck.
- 16:23Speaker 3: I think we prefer to say fandom instead of cult cults.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Although there were a lot of.
- 16:30Speaker 5: You say tomato, I say tomato.
- 16:34Speaker 3: How do you say hot dog?
- 16:36Speaker 5: Hot dogs?
- 16:36Speaker 6: You say service Frankfurter dog, hot dog, the second serving.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Yes, great segue, Christine.
- 16:44Speaker 6: So the giant sixty five foot hot Dog is back
- 16:47Speaker 6: in Times Square. It will be there through August eighth.
- 16:52Speaker 6: Every day at noon, the hot dog rises and we
- 16:56Speaker 6: have a confetti burst from the hot dog.
- 16:59Speaker 5: It is absolutely amazing.
- 17:02Speaker 6: Jen Katron and Paul Outlaw, the two artists who brought
- 17:05Speaker 6: this to us for the second time, certainly didn't disappoint,
- 17:10Speaker 6: and it really is a visitor favorite in Times Square.
- 17:14Speaker 6: It's created those instagrammable moments and people say, why bring
- 17:19Speaker 6: a sixty five foot hot dog to Times Square? And
- 17:22Speaker 6: I say why not? In Times Square? You got to
- 17:25Speaker 6: go big or go home. And if you put something small,
- 17:29Speaker 6: something something benign in Times Square, it's just going to
- 17:33Speaker 6: go unnoticed.
- 17:34Speaker 5: Everyone notices the sixty five foot hot dog.
- 17:37Speaker 3: They have to relish the moment. Speaking of big, We're
- 17:40Speaker 3: on a roll, Christine, I'm on a hot dog role.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Speaking of big, you also have one Time Square which
- 17:47Speaker 3: is the home of the iconic New Year's Eve ball.
- 17:51Speaker 3: It's been getting a lot of press, a lot of
- 17:53Speaker 3: great stuff. I haven't been up there yet, Tom Harris,
- 17:55Speaker 3: but you have been.
- 17:57Speaker 5: Really how did that happen?
- 17:58Speaker 6: So anyway, resonation, it's an amazing must have been lost
- 18:03Speaker 6: than the mail. It's an amazing, amazing way to look
- 18:06Speaker 6: at Times Square from the observation deck.
- 18:09Speaker 5: And what I love most is.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Is like a portion of the observation deck that has
- 18:13Speaker 6: a glass floor that you can look down onto the
- 18:16Speaker 6: ground and then on the forty second street side you
- 18:20Speaker 6: can see river to river on forty second Street and
- 18:23Speaker 6: it really is just an amazing, amazing vantage point. They're
- 18:27Speaker 6: going to open up another exhibit with the history. I
- 18:32Speaker 6: think it's the Time Time Traveler. I think you know,
- 18:35Speaker 6: don't get me Time times travel and you're going to
- 18:39Speaker 6: be able to experience New Year's Eve three hundred and
- 18:43Speaker 6: sixty five days, so amazing things happening in Times Square.
- 18:46Speaker 5: Come out and make your New Time Square memories.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Well, folks, we got to wrap this up, but Tom Harris,
- 18:52Speaker 3: thank you so much. Thank you Time Harris from the
- 18:58Speaker 3: Time Square Alliance. We thank you for spending some time
- 19:00Speaker 3: with us today. And folks, don't go away, because we're
- 19:03Speaker 3: going to be talking baseball with our two baseball aficionados,
- 19:07Speaker 3: Tracy me Parent and Martya Pell. Don't go away. Thanks Tom.
- 19:18Speaker 1: And now from New York back to Radio Night Live
- 19:21Speaker 1: here Kevin mccolla All.
- 19:23Speaker 3: Right, well, welcome back, folks. Here we are Radio Night Live,
- 19:27Speaker 3: Fun Friday, Missing Kevin McCullough tonight. But I'm joined not
- 19:31Speaker 3: only by Aby Byrne, but also my in house residence
- 19:36Speaker 3: sports reporter Nick Nicholas welcome Nick Yay. Nick Well, Nick,
- 19:43Speaker 3: who's been following and been writing and covering sports for
- 19:46Speaker 3: his entire career, helped me with my notes tonight because
- 19:50Speaker 3: I have two very special guests, but more importantly, they
- 19:53Speaker 3: are very special friends to me. Martia Pell, the historian
- 19:57Speaker 3: for the New York Yankees, and Tracy the four Knee Print.
- 20:00Speaker 3: So we have Tracy being the Mets fan of course,
- 20:05Speaker 3: and Marty, we you're just synonymous with the Yankees, having
- 20:10Speaker 3: covered the Yankees and having worked with the Yankees from
- 20:13Speaker 3: the Mickey Mantle days.
- 20:15Speaker 7: Actually I was a Highlanders pr guy going back to
- 20:19Speaker 7: nineteen three.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Yeah right, yeah, I don't think you're that old, Marty,
- 20:26Speaker 3: and we're just gonna call you not old but wise. So, gents,
- 20:30Speaker 3: the All Star Game is behind us. You had also
- 20:35Speaker 3: Cooper's Town behind us. And the big next benchmark for
- 20:40Speaker 3: Major League Baseball is going to be the cutoff the
- 20:45Speaker 3: trade deadline. So we were talking in the studio before
- 20:49Speaker 3: the ab put the recording on. The trade deadline is
- 20:52Speaker 3: August third, and we got to figure out I'm going
- 20:55Speaker 3: to start with you, Tracy, because the Mets, of course,
- 20:59Speaker 3: for years, did not have as deep pockets as the Yankees,
- 21:04Speaker 3: but now they do. And I think everybody had such
- 21:06Speaker 3: an exciting moment or thinking that the Mets were going
- 21:10Speaker 3: to become this major league team, if you will, But
- 21:13Speaker 3: it seems like the Mets are still the Mutts. Oops.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Did I say that out loud?
- 21:17Speaker 2: Oh, that's harsh. That's great.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Going on, listen.
- 21:21Speaker 8: As we sit here today, the Mets have won four
- 21:24Speaker 8: of their last five games, so I'm happy about that.
- 21:26Speaker 8: And when I'm in at City Field where nine wins,
- 21:29Speaker 8: five losses, so I've seen a very good season so far.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I don't know what older subb is about.
- 21:33Speaker 8: I'm not in five, but their record is forty seven
- 21:37Speaker 8: wins and sixty three losses, so that puts them sixteen
- 21:41Speaker 8: games under five hundred. They've played one hundred and ten games.
- 21:44Speaker 8: They have a fifty two games left in the season.
- 21:46Speaker 8: To reach five hundred for the season, they have to
- 21:48Speaker 8: go thirty four in eighteen. It's not likely, but it's
- 21:52Speaker 8: not impossible. So I'm cautiously optimistic that they can maybe
- 21:56Speaker 8: reach the five hundred mark and that will bring up
- 21:59Speaker 8: least some measure for space ability to a very disappointing season.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Well, what do you see with the with the trade deadline,
- 22:06Speaker 3: you see that they're going to find a catcher or
- 22:07Speaker 3: what's the you know, what's the most important piece of
- 22:10Speaker 3: the puzzle here to make the Mets, you know, peas
- 22:13Speaker 3: get better.
- 22:14Speaker 8: I don't think they're going to get anybody really earth
- 22:17Speaker 8: shattering because it's probably going to be prospects or maybe
- 22:20Speaker 8: a mid level major league player, because the players that
- 22:24Speaker 8: are available right now are not going to necessarily get
- 22:27Speaker 8: a ton in return, although Clay Holmes has had a
- 22:32Speaker 8: very good season and he might get a decent return.
- 22:35Speaker 8: Everybody wants Luke Weaver because he's having a brilliant season.
- 22:38Speaker 8: He's an ERA at that one point eight eight or something,
- 22:42Speaker 8: and he's an excellent player, and he's having a terrific season,
- 22:45Speaker 8: and he's got he's got a contract for next year,
- 22:48Speaker 8: so they're not just getting a rental with him.
- 22:51Speaker 2: But I hope the Mets hold on to him.
- 22:53Speaker 8: Look, David Stearns is he's a capable baseball guy, but
- 22:56Speaker 8: he made some key mistakes. He gave away or he
- 22:59Speaker 8: let the Pete Alonzo, the hard and soul of the
- 23:02Speaker 8: team walk away at the end of last season. And
- 23:05Speaker 8: that was unforgivable because none of the replacements, whether it's
- 23:09Speaker 8: Polanco or Luis Roberts or even Boba Schett, nobody's really
- 23:15Speaker 8: filled the void. So that's the problem. But we have
- 23:19Speaker 8: a core of very good players with the Mets, young
- 23:21Speaker 8: players who have a future. Nolan McLain and Christian Scott,
- 23:24Speaker 8: Zach Thornton. These are good pitchers. Carson Bench and aj
- 23:28Speaker 8: Ewing are good position players, so that's not a terrible foundation.
- 23:32Speaker 8: And of course Juan Soto, you know it, was a
- 23:34Speaker 8: brilliant player, but he's been hurt a lot. Unfortunately, he'll
- 23:36Speaker 8: play the fewest number of games in his career this year.
- 23:39Speaker 8: And also Lindor has been hurt a lot. So when
- 23:42Speaker 8: you lose those kind of guys, it's hard to be
- 23:46Speaker 8: as good as you could have been.
- 23:48Speaker 3: All Right, well, let's give Marty a chance here to
- 23:50Speaker 3: talk about the Yankees. How are we doing? Go ahead, Marty,
- 23:53Speaker 3: what do you think?
- 23:55Speaker 7: Well, when we did a preseason forecast, was said at
- 24:00Speaker 7: the time, you know what, the starting rotation, these starting
- 24:03Speaker 7: pitchers on the Yankees are enough to sweep them into
- 24:08Speaker 7: the postseason. Now, the team has gotten worse as the
- 24:12Speaker 7: season's gone along because of injuries, and half the lineup
- 24:16Speaker 7: should be in Triple A right now, but that starting
- 24:20Speaker 7: pitching is still amazing. I used to say the best
- 24:25Speaker 7: two man rotation they ever had was roughing In Gomez.
- 24:29Speaker 7: The best three man was Reynolds, Rashi and Lopat the
- 24:34Speaker 7: best one man was Whitey Ford. And this is like
- 24:38Speaker 7: seven starters when they're all healthy, all of whom are
- 24:42Speaker 7: capable of taking you deep in the game.
- 24:45Speaker 3: So I'm actually hold on to that thought. We got
- 24:48Speaker 3: to pay a bill or two with some advertising. Kevin
- 24:50Speaker 3: has taught me, well, don't go away, folks. We've got
- 24:53Speaker 3: Marty A Pell who's going to continue on the Yankees
- 24:55Speaker 3: when we come right back tracing you print Radio Night Live,
- 24:58Speaker 3: Christine Nicholas, don't go away.
- 25:06Speaker 2: What a little moonline can do.
- 25:08Speaker 1: It's Radio Night Live, yours Kevin McCullough.
- 25:13Speaker 3: All right, everybody, welcome back to Radio Night Live. I
- 25:16Speaker 3: am Christine Nicholas. My partner Kevin McCall is enjoying a
- 25:20Speaker 3: very nice vacation, hopefully with his beautiful family. Aby Byrne
- 25:24Speaker 3: is in the studio keeping me all together, and my
- 25:27Speaker 3: in house resident sports writer Nick Nicholas. Thank you Nick
- 25:31Speaker 3: for your help with my notes here, and of course
- 25:33Speaker 3: we have Tracy knipprint major met fan, and we have
- 25:38Speaker 3: Marty Appell, Yankee historian. Marty. Before we took a break,
- 25:42Speaker 3: you were talking about how the pitching has been keeping
- 25:44Speaker 3: the Yankees, really pulling them together. I mean, they are
- 25:48Speaker 3: sixty one forty eight. If you just look at by
- 25:50Speaker 3: the numbers, you think, wow, this is a pretty good team.
- 25:53Speaker 3: But for some reason, as Yankee fans, we're always worried.
- 25:56Speaker 3: We have that pit in our stomach that they're not
- 25:58Speaker 3: good enough. And then of course we're worried about Aaron
- 26:00Speaker 3: Judge and Cody Bellinger. Do you think that they're going
- 26:04Speaker 3: to be coming off the injury list anytime soon?
- 26:07Speaker 2: No, I don't.
- 26:08Speaker 7: I think, you know, we may get the last three
- 26:10Speaker 7: or four weeks of the season from them. Apparently John
- 26:14Speaker 7: Carlos Stanton has matriculated enough now that he's on the
- 26:18Speaker 7: faculty of a medical school.
- 26:20Speaker 5: So I don't know if we'll see him again.
- 26:24Speaker 7: But you know, except for the Dodgers, there are no
- 26:27Speaker 7: super teams out there this year, and I think the
- 26:30Speaker 7: Yankees have held their own just fine, even if some
- 26:33Speaker 7: of the games are hard to watch and Jez throwing
- 26:37Speaker 7: the third base the other night, But the pitching can
- 26:41Speaker 7: carry them deep into the season and into the postseason.
- 26:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:45Speaker 3: I mean they had that run against the Phillies, and
- 26:48Speaker 3: you know, of course they won the series, but that
- 26:51Speaker 3: last game was so lopsided that it's just like a
- 26:54Speaker 3: head scratcher, like, how can you lose, you know, by
- 26:57Speaker 3: that big of a stretch yet be still you know,
- 27:00Speaker 3: doing so well. We also have some significant milestones or
- 27:06Speaker 3: remembrances here for Yankee fans this weekend. Marty, I know
- 27:11Speaker 3: when you were part of the team, when Thurman Munson
- 27:14Speaker 3: unfortunately left us way too soon. Can you touch on
- 27:19Speaker 3: that please and memory.
- 27:20Speaker 7: Of well, this Sunday will be forty seven years since
- 27:23Speaker 7: his awful plane crash that took the life of probably
- 27:28Speaker 7: a future Hall of Famer and the team captain and
- 27:31Speaker 7: in many ways the spirit of those Billy Martin clubs.
- 27:36Speaker 7: It was my privilege to be the pr guy throughout
- 27:39Speaker 7: his career and then do an autobiography with him, and
- 27:45Speaker 7: thirty years later a biography of him. So I can't
- 27:50Speaker 7: let the weekend go by without remembering my pal Thurman Munson.
- 27:55Speaker 7: I also want to get in and.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Thank you well, but just on Thurman Munson, thank you
- 27:59Speaker 3: for writing that book. It was a book that was
- 28:02Speaker 3: a page turner for me. You know so many from
- 28:05Speaker 3: a PR point of view, being a PR person myself.
- 28:07Speaker 3: I mean, you had to deal with that in his
- 28:09Speaker 3: relationship with Reggie Jackson and like the swizzle stick, right,
- 28:12Speaker 3: wasn't that that whole same year or so? Or am
- 28:14Speaker 3: I mixing things up?
- 28:16Speaker 7: Well, you're correct, And those were the Bronx Zoo years
- 28:21Speaker 7: and Thurman was part of that mixture of controversy day
- 28:24Speaker 7: by day. But he never sought controversy. He just wanted
- 28:28Speaker 7: to do his job and go out there and win,
- 28:32Speaker 7: which was the right attitude for any player to have.
- 28:35Speaker 7: Go out there and win and do your job and
- 28:37Speaker 7: keep your head down.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Tell us about Cooperstown.
- 28:40Speaker 7: Yeah, So I was in Cooperstown last weekend, and the
- 28:43Speaker 7: reason I went is because Bill White has been a
- 28:46Speaker 7: friend of mine for over a half a century. Bill was,
- 28:50Speaker 7: for people who don't quite remember, he was an All
- 28:53Speaker 7: Star Gold Glove player for the Cardinals, the Phillies, and
- 28:57Speaker 7: even the New York Giants at the start of his career.
- 29:00Speaker 7: Then he became a Yankee broadcaster, working with Phil Rizzuto
- 29:04Speaker 7: and Frank Messer for eighteen seasons and I was the
- 29:08Speaker 7: executive producer of those telecasts. And then he became the
- 29:13Speaker 7: National League president, which was the highest position in administrative
- 29:19Speaker 7: sports that any African American had held. So he received
- 29:24Speaker 7: what's called the Buck O'Neill Award, after a legendary Negro
- 29:28Speaker 7: League's figure for the body of his work for all
- 29:33Speaker 7: of it. And Bill is ninety two now, but he
- 29:35Speaker 7: made it up to Cooperstown and it was so good
- 29:39Speaker 7: to see him. He still gets around with a walker,
- 29:43Speaker 7: but he stands straight and tall, and he's got a presence.
- 29:47Speaker 7: And even though he delivered his speech pre recorded while
- 29:51Speaker 7: he was sitting on the stage, it was rolling on tape.
- 29:55Speaker 7: He owns the room when he's in the room, even
- 29:57Speaker 7: if he's seated.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Know him what presence? Yes, you were blessed to work
- 30:04Speaker 3: with him. Switching back over to the Mets, going off
- 30:07Speaker 3: to Queens, you know, Tracy, let's talk about how things
- 30:13Speaker 3: have fared for the Mets since they fired Carlos Mendoza.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Of course, not to be confused, and there are just
- 30:20Speaker 3: no relations to the Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, which
- 30:24Speaker 3: I had to give a plug too, because my daughter
- 30:26Speaker 3: goes to IU. Our daughter goes to you. What a
- 30:28Speaker 3: year to go to IU, right, Indiana. I mean, just crazy.
- 30:32Speaker 8: It's funny because Indiana was always a basketball school and
- 30:34Speaker 8: now they're known for football.
- 30:36Speaker 2: It's crazy. Listen, Mendoza was a very good manager in
- 30:39Speaker 2: my opinion.
- 30:40Speaker 8: He checked all the boxes and it just was a
- 30:43Speaker 8: storm of unfortunate things that happened. And when a team
- 30:46Speaker 8: starts to flounder like that, usually it's the manager.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Takes the hit.
- 30:50Speaker 8: Now, the guy that they brought in, Andy Green, I
- 30:52Speaker 8: think he's stabilized things because he was in charge of
- 30:55Speaker 8: the farm system, so he's very familiar with the younger
- 30:58Speaker 8: players in their system, some of whom are actually up
- 31:01Speaker 8: now playing for the Mets. And he says he wants
- 31:04Speaker 8: to go back and be at the head of the
- 31:05Speaker 8: farm system again next year. He's just doing this as
- 31:08Speaker 8: a caretaker, so we'll see if that's the case. But
- 31:10Speaker 8: I think he's been pretty good. I mean, I was
- 31:12Speaker 8: sorry to see Carlos go, but I think that Andy
- 31:15Speaker 8: Green has got them playing pretty inspired ball despite the
- 31:18Speaker 8: fact that they're not.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Really in the race.
- 31:21Speaker 8: And you know, there's a lot of speculation about who
- 31:23Speaker 8: the next manager will be.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Some people think it's going to.
- 31:27Speaker 8: Be Cora, who was the manager of Boston and then
- 31:30Speaker 8: was unceremoniously let go earlier in the year, or possibly
- 31:35Speaker 8: even the guy just made it into the Hall of Fame,
- 31:39Speaker 8: Carlos Beltran, who was supposed to be the Mets manager,
- 31:43Speaker 8: and then because of the scandal with the the Houston Astros,
- 31:48Speaker 8: he was jettison before he ever actually managed the game.
- 31:52Speaker 3: They're both no, they should be looking at our zoom.
- 31:55Speaker 3: We got somebody available right here, the fourth Tracy new Print.
- 31:58Speaker 3: I mean, why don't you put your.
- 32:00Speaker 8: Well, you know what, I'll be like Bobby Valentine in
- 32:03Speaker 8: the shadows with the disguise on, whispering things to them.
- 32:07Speaker 8: I don't want the full responsibility, but I'll tell you
- 32:10Speaker 8: it would be an honor to advise them from afar
- 32:13Speaker 8: because I think, yeah, you know, and just mentioning Bill
- 32:16Speaker 8: White for a second, you know, he was a nationalague
- 32:18Speaker 8: player for almost the entire career, I think, for his
- 32:20Speaker 8: entire career, and as a Met fan, I always thought
- 32:23Speaker 8: I had a lot of respect for him as a player.
- 32:25Speaker 8: You know, he was always a formidable player playing against us.
- 32:28Speaker 3: Yeah, well, we're running out of time, But I did
- 32:31Speaker 3: want to bring to our audience's attention that on September eleventh,
- 32:35Speaker 3: the twenty fifth year of the attacks on America, the
- 32:37Speaker 3: Mets will be playing the Yankees at Yankee Stadium for
- 32:41Speaker 3: a seven pm game. There's so much history there with
- 32:45Speaker 3: the Yankees and the Mets post nine to eleven and
- 32:49Speaker 3: what they did to bring New York City back. So
- 32:52Speaker 3: I'd love to have the both of you guys to
- 32:54Speaker 3: come back so we can talk about that at a
- 32:56Speaker 3: future show. But thank you tracing me, thank you Martia Pell,
- 33:00Speaker 3: and don't go away, folks. We will be right back.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Once again from New York. Here's Radio night Life and
- 33:12Speaker 1: Kevin mccolor.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Well, abe, we did. We did it without Kevin. He's
- 33:19Speaker 3: got some big shoes to fill. I miss him. I
- 33:21Speaker 3: do it too, Christine, But you know what, I'm proud
- 33:23Speaker 3: of us. We're a great team. Well, we had great guests.
- 33:27Speaker 3: I want to thank Tom Harris, and of course our
- 33:29Speaker 3: buds are baseball buds. Maritya Pell and Tracy me a
- 33:33Speaker 3: print and think and talking about baseball. You can catch
- 33:36Speaker 3: the Mets this weekend. They are home playing the Marlins.
- 33:40Speaker 3: And if you want to catch the Yankees, you're going
- 33:42Speaker 3: to have to tune in somewhere or just listen to
- 33:44Speaker 3: it on radio, Good Old Radio. Also speaking about baseball,
- 33:48Speaker 3: don't forget Old Timer's Day at Yankee Stadium is going
- 33:51Speaker 3: to be on August eighth. They play Atlanta, and then
- 33:55Speaker 3: please put on your calendars and try to join us
- 33:58Speaker 3: up at Yankee Stadium on septem eleventh, when the Yankees
- 34:01Speaker 3: host the New York Mets. It'll be the twenty fifth
- 34:05Speaker 3: anniversary of the attacks on America for you know, on
- 34:08Speaker 3: September eleventh. Cannot believe that it is twenty five years.
- 34:12Speaker 3: But I think this gives people a chance to reflect,
- 34:14Speaker 3: be together and also be with the community that did
- 34:18Speaker 3: so much to bring New York back to its feet,
- 34:20Speaker 3: which was baseball. The Yankee US. They have a strong
- 34:25Speaker 3: history and what they did on the following days before
- 34:29Speaker 3: Major League Baseball even started again, the Yankees, thanks to
- 34:35Speaker 3: Randy Levigne at the time, they hosted a orial service
- 34:38Speaker 3: at Yankee Stadium that was unbelievable that it's twenty five years.
- 34:43Speaker 3: So let's come back together on September eleventh at Yankee Stadium.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Do want to congratulate House of Spells on their opening
- 34:51Speaker 3: location is two thirty four West forty second Street between
- 34:54Speaker 3: seventh and eighth Avenues. You know, check it out. And
- 34:57Speaker 3: also Happy Birthday to Harry Potter, which today, but of
- 35:01Speaker 3: course you can always celebrate Harry Potter at the House
- 35:03Speaker 3: of Spells anytime. Also, if you do like the Bronx
- 35:07Speaker 3: Zoo and we love the Bronx siou aby, we do

- 35:23Speaker 3: lot of fun. Love it. Summer Streets that's always fun.
- 35:26Speaker 3: That's going to be starting this coming Saturday, and then
- 35:29Speaker 3: also the next two Saturdays, August eighth and August fifteenth,

- 35:35Speaker 3: basically open up. It's a lot of the streets all
- 35:38Speaker 3: over the over of the city to bikers and to
- 35:41Speaker 3: dancers and to they put playgrounds in there. It's a
- 35:45Speaker 3: lot of fun. So check that out at NYC dot
- 35:47Speaker 3: gov Summer Streets. And I love Movie Nights at Bryan Park.
- 35:50Speaker 3: That is a free event as well. In this coming Monday,
- 35:53Speaker 3: August third, Go grab a blanket, grab some friends, go
- 35:56Speaker 3: to Bryant Park, which is sixth Avenue between fortieth and
- 35:59Speaker 3: forty second Street, and you will watch Bridget Jones's Diary,
- 36:03Speaker 3: one of my favorite films from two thousand and one.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Always a lot of fun. Also want to give a
- 36:08Speaker 3: shout out to Monica Blom. She is the long time
- 36:11Speaker 3: serving president of Lincoln Square Bid. She served with distinction
- 36:15Speaker 3: and she just has done an amazing job. But all
- 36:18Speaker 3: good things come to an end at some point when
- 36:20Speaker 3: they decide to retire, and that's what Monica is doing.
- 36:23Speaker 3: But the Lincoln Square Bid will be in very good
- 36:25Speaker 3: hands with Ralph Emily, who has been by her side
- 36:28Speaker 3: for twenty five years. So learning on the job for Ralph,
- 36:33Speaker 3: He's going to hit the ground running. So congratulations to
- 36:35Speaker 3: Monica and Ralph, and thank you from so many of
- 36:38Speaker 3: us in New York City for all the wonderful public
- 36:40Speaker 3: service that you have done. Folks, there's so much going
- 36:43Speaker 3: on in the city. Just check out NYC Tourism Aby
- 36:47Speaker 3: hope you have a wonderful weekend. Thank you to our
- 36:49Speaker 3: guests Martya Pell, Tracy the Print, Tom Harris, and also

- 36:57Speaker 3: So Kevin will be back next week, I promise you.
- 37:00Speaker 3: This is Christine Nicholas saying good night from Radio Night
- 37:03Speaker 3: Live
- 37:07Speaker 7: M
