- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Isaiah chapter
- 0:192. Isaiah chapter 2 and in Isaiah 1
- 0:23we saw God had an issue with the southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 0:28He called them Sodom and Gomorrah.
- 0:31He, he said that they were incredibly wicked, that he would
- 0:34bring, if you will, a a purging fire through Jerusalem and that
- 0:40what would be left in Jerusalem would be good, godly people
- 0:45because of the redemption of the Lord.
- 0:48That the rulers, that they, the rulers and advisors and judges
- 0:53that they would have would be good.
- 0:56It would be the ones that would actually enforce justice and
- 0:59goodness in the land. And so that was kind of the
- 1:03first prophecy from Isaiah that we saw, which was Judah is in
- 1:08trouble. This southern Kingdom of Judah
- 1:10is in trouble. They've not been walking with
- 1:12the Lord. And so they needed, if you will,
- 1:15to have some holy fear of God put into them.
- 1:19And then today we're going to be looking at Isaiah chapter 2.
- 1:23I don't know if we'll get all the way through the chapter, but
- 1:26let's begin reading together, says the vision that Isaiah, son
- 1:31of Amos saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
- 1:34Jerusalem, there being the capital city of Judah, says in
- 1:38the last days the mountain of Yahweh's house will be
- 1:42established, if you will. That's the Temple Mount, where
- 1:46God's temple is placed on top of that mountain there.
- 1:50He says it'll be established at the top of the mountains and
- 1:53will be raised above the hills. Now for those of you that maybe
- 1:58know about Jerusalem's topographical landscape, you
- 2:02would know the Temple Mount isn't even the tallest mountain
- 2:07in the area. Here this is speaking
- 2:10metaphorically, that God's Temple will be the foremost
- 2:16temple, that it will be the highest of all.
- 2:19If you think about how the people of the ancient Near East
- 2:23thought about the skies in the land or heavens and earth
- 2:27mountains are these overlapping places where heaven and earth
- 2:32meet, where there is a meeting of, you know, the land people,
- 2:36humans and the sky people, the gods.
- 2:40And so you can think even of the Garden of Eden as talked about
- 2:44as the mountain of God or Mount Sinai where Moses met with God
- 2:49and received the 10 commandments.
- 2:51All that kind of stuff is ought to be in view here.
- 2:56So he says the mountain of Yahweh's house will be
- 2:58established at the top of the mountains and will be raised
- 3:00above the hills. He says all nations will stream
- 3:03to it, that there is universal worship here of Yahweh.
- 3:07What a day that will be when not just actually this is part of
- 3:13what Jesus has done that me, a decidedly not Jewish person, not
- 3:17of Jewish ancestry, I come to worship the Lord and his holy
- 3:23temple and if you will, he is building up his church as his
- 3:27holy temple. That's what we would read in
- 3:29first Peter 2 and in Ephesians 2 many other places but that God's
- 3:34people are being built up together from all nations and
- 3:38tribes and tongues and together we worship the Lord.
- 3:42He says all nations will stream to it and many people's will
- 3:44come and say, come, let's go up to the mountain of Yahweh, to
- 3:48the House of the God of Jacob. He will teach us about His ways
- 3:52so that we may walk in his paths.
- 3:55I want to know how to better follow God, and I'm just going
- 3:58to go to the Lord's temple from every nation to be able to learn
- 4:03about God, to be taught by him. And man, what a joy that even as
- 4:08we're reading today, I know that because of what Jesus told the
- 4:12disciples that the Holy Spirit even now is teaching me some
- 4:18things and he is teaching you some things.
- 4:20And that together, God's people from I, I saw the other day, we
- 4:26have people that watch our various channels or listen to
- 4:29our channels from almost every continent on planet Earth.
- 4:37Not Antarctica, not yet. We're still trying to reach
- 4:40Antarctica. And I didn't see any countries
- 4:43from South America yet. I don't speak Spanish on
- 4:47Tabernacle talk, so I'm not totally blown back by that.
- 4:50But what a joy that together we are learning from the Holy
- 4:54Spirit who inspired the Word of God, and He teaches us his ways
- 4:59and his paths. So we get to see a little bit of
- 5:01it now. One day Jesus will return, and
- 5:04on that day this will find its ultimate fulfillment.
- 5:08But right now we get a little taste of glory divine, according
- 5:13there from the old hymn Blessed Assurance.
- 5:15Oh what a foretaste of glory divine.
- 5:18He says for instruction we'll go out of Zion and the word of
- 5:21Yahweh from Jerusalem. I apologize to my people
- 5:26watching. I accidentally scrolled when I
- 5:28should have clicked, He says. Instruction will go out of Zion
- 5:34and the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem, we think even like
- 5:38where did the apostles who wrote the the New Testament, where did
- 5:42they come from? They came from Jerusalem and
- 5:46Paul was a teacher there in Jerusalem and that's where he
- 5:50came back to after he got saved. And though he went to many other
- 5:54places from Jerusalem, from this center place of where Christ
- 5:59died and was buried and rose again and ascended, and where He
- 6:03will one day return, Jerusalem is the centerpiece of where the
- 6:07word of Yahweh comes out from verse #4 He.
- 6:11So this is the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem.
- 6:14He will settle disputes among the nations and provide
- 6:18arbitration for many peoples. They will beat their swords into
- 6:23plows and their Spears into pruning knives.
- 6:27Nation will not take up the sword against nation and they
- 6:31will never again train for war. What a thought that this is that
- 6:36God himself is going to live in Jerusalem here.
- 6:40It's not just that there will be good people that are in
- 6:45Jerusalem, but God himself is teaching and arbitrating.
- 6:50I got to tell you guys, I don't know what all this looks like.
- 6:53It just sounds beautiful. This is the story that we were
- 6:57made to believe and to adopt into our lives.
- 7:03Also want to throw out there, war is bad.
- 7:08Unfortunately, that needs to be said in today's day and age.
- 7:12War is an evil, occasionally a necessary evil to protect, but
- 7:18it should never be something that we rejoice in, that we look
- 7:20forward to, that we really want to happen.
- 7:23War is a bad thing and part of Jesus coming back is saying
- 7:27there is no more warring verse #5 House of Jacob come and let's
- 7:33walk in Yahweh's light, for you have abandoned your people, the
- 7:38House of Jacob, because they're full of divination from the east
- 7:42and a fortune tellers like the Philistines.
- 7:44They are in league with foreigners.
- 7:47Their land is full of silver and gold and there is no limit to
- 7:50their treasures. Their land is full of horses and
- 7:53there's no limit to their Chariots.
- 7:55Their land is full of worthless idols.
- 7:58They, they worship the work of their hands with their fingers
- 8:01have made so. Humanity is brought low and each
- 8:04person is humbled. Do not forgive them.
- 8:07Go into the rocks and hide in the dust.
- 8:10From the terror of Yahweh and from His majestic splendor, the
- 8:13pride of mankind will be humbled and human loftiness will be
- 8:18brought low. Yahweh alone will be exalted on
- 8:22that day. OK, I got to rewind because we
- 8:25definitely took a turn, as I'm sure that you heard as well.
- 8:29So verse #5 sounds super encouraging.
- 8:31He says House of Jacob come and let's walk in Yahweh's light,
- 8:37because then it says this. So we need to walk in light of
- 8:40that coming day of God's Kingdom.
- 8:42He says, for you've abandoned your people, the House of Jacob
- 8:47because and here he gives just this giant list of the sins of
- 8:52the nation of Judah. He says, because they are full
- 8:55of divination from the east. So divination is I want to
- 9:00figure out from a spiritual being and that could be through
- 9:04a rolling of dice. It could be through, you know,
- 9:07selecting a specific straw, if you will, kind of in today's day
- 9:11and age it, it could be looking at tarot cards.
- 9:14It could be, you know, using a Ouija board, things like that.
- 9:20That is divination. It is trying to figure out from
- 9:23a spiritual source what might happen in the future, what a
- 9:28right decision is. Previously unknown facts do not
- 9:34ever as the people of God do not do that here.
- 9:37This is talked about as something that will cause God to
- 9:41abandon a nation through consulting other spiritual
- 9:46beings. He says divination from the
- 9:48east. This would be likely Iran, Iraq
- 9:53area, Babylon, Assyria, those types of places.
- 9:57And he says and a fortune tellers like the Philistines
- 10:01that here Judah had looked to people pretending to know the
- 10:06future. Frankly, these days, hopefully
- 10:10not a lot of people are going to fortune tellers anymore.
- 10:14They should know that that's an exercise in futility.
- 10:16Like that's stupid. Don't ever do that.
- 10:20But many people will use AI and they will consult AI about what
- 10:26to do before they'll ever talk to, you know, a pastor or before
- 10:31they will ever talk with like good godly friends, other
- 10:35believers in their local church about what they should do.
- 10:38And that is not a good path to walk down.
- 10:44Consult the Lord, consult the word of God, consult in prayer
- 10:48the Holy Spirit who will guide you into all truth that you need
- 10:51to know instead of seeking the Lord and what the Lord's word
- 10:55says. These people, they weren't going
- 10:58to the prophets, they weren't going to, you know, the Torah,
- 11:01the law, the word. Instead, they were going to
- 11:06divination and fortune tellers says they are in league with
- 11:10foreigners. He says their land is full of
- 11:14silver and gold. Judah was very rich at this
- 11:16time. He says there's no limit to
- 11:19their treasures. Their land is full of horses and
- 11:22there's no limit to their Chariots.
- 11:23Those were two things that Israel's kings were not to amass
- 11:28for themselves. God specifically set that out in
- 11:30the Old Testament law because he said then the kings will place
- 11:35their faith and their trust in their own military might because
- 11:39they have Chariots and horses. He says don't trust in that,
- 11:45trust in me. And here there was a trust in
- 11:49divination, a trust in fortune tellers, a trust in the gods of
- 11:53the other nations, a trust in riches, a trust in military
- 11:57might. Verse #80 says their land is
- 11:59full of worthless idols. They worship the work of their
- 12:03hands, what their fingers have made, what you and I build in
- 12:09our lives, our 401K's, our houses, our families, our good
- 12:15names and reputations, our toys, our possessions.
- 12:19It is just stuff and it cannot save us.
- 12:23It cannot give us ultimate meaning and purpose.
- 12:26And so do not rely on the worthless work of your own
- 12:29hands. Instead, rely on God who richly
- 12:33gives us all things to enjoy. As we just read not too long ago
- 12:36in First Timothy chapter 6 he says so in verse #9 humanity is
- 12:42brought low and each person is humbled.
- 12:45Do not forgive them. Here there is like this prayer
- 12:49from Isaiah for God not to, if you will, not dealing kindly
- 12:56nicely with these people that have turned their back on God
- 12:59and as a result have plunged Judah into wickedness.
- 13:05And then verses 10 and 11. If you've ever read through the
- 13:08Book of Revelation, it'll sound familiar.
- 13:10He says go into the rocks and hide in the dust from the terror
- 13:14of Yahweh and from his majestic splendor.
- 13:17You can read in Revelation. John applies this and he talks
- 13:21about people hiding from, as he quotes it there, the wrath of
- 13:26the Lamb. That is of course, Jesus Christ,
- 13:29that Jesus is Yahweh. And on that day when Jesus
- 13:33returns, He is bringing judgement with Him.
- 13:38He is. He came the first time as the
- 13:40Lamb that was slain. The next time He's coming, He's
- 13:44coming as the lion of the tribe of Judah.
- 13:47And so on that day with His majestic splendor there, verse
- 13:51#11 the pride of mankind will be humbled and human loftiness will
- 13:56be brought low. Yahweh alone will be exalted on
- 14:00that day. Can I ask you, who are you
- 14:03lifting up today? Are you trusting in riches?
- 14:08Are you trusting in military might?
- 14:10Are you trusting in your 401K or even in your family to be able
- 14:16to give you ultimate meaning and purpose?
- 14:19They cannot and will not ever be what you need ultimately in
- 14:23life. That has to come from Yahweh
- 14:27verse #12 for a day belonging to Yahweh of Heaven's armies.
- 14:32If you're looking here, this is the Lord, that's the
- 14:34Tetragrammaton Yahweh. And then here of armies, kind of
- 14:38older way to phrase it would be the Lord of hosts or Yahweh of
- 14:42hosts. I like specifying the armies
- 14:46here talked about are Yahweh of Heaven's armies, that it is
- 14:50God's angels that are coming with Him.
- 14:54He says for a day belonging to Yahweh of Heaven's armies is
- 14:57coming against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is
- 15:01lifted up, it will be humbled. So everything in human
- 15:05governments and societies that think that it is strong and
- 15:10mighty and able to be built on God is going to bring all of it
- 15:13down. This world's systems and
- 15:15societies will all crumble before the face of God Himself.
- 15:20He says against all the Cedars of Lebanon, lofty and lifted up
- 15:26so great like timber, shipbuilding, creations, all of
- 15:31that is going to be brought down and humbled, he says against all
- 15:35the oaks of Bashan. This was a place of actually
- 15:39there was a lot of idol worship That's there.
- 15:42You can read, I think it's Psalm 22 that one of the Gospel
- 15:47accounts references, it talks about the oaks of or sorry, the
- 15:53oxen of Bashan have pierced me through in that it's kind of a
- 16:00Messianic Psalm talking about Jesus and what he went through
- 16:03and attacks both like spiritually and physically that
- 16:06he was going through. But here oaks, this would be
- 16:09timber. You would use it for building,
- 16:12He would use it for ships, all that kind of stuff.
- 16:14As with Lebanon, he says. Against all the high mountains,
- 16:18against all the lofty hills, these places of false worship of
- 16:23the gods. It's going down, he says,
- 16:26against every high tower, against every fortified wall,
- 16:30against military might. It's coming down in the face of
- 16:35Jesus, He says, against every ship of Tarshish and against
- 16:38every splendid sea vessel, the pride of mankind will be brought
- 16:43low, and human loftiness will be humbled.
- 16:46Yahweh alone will be exalted. On that day, the worthless idols
- 16:51will vanish completely. You want to know what some idols
- 16:54are here? Commerce, false worship,
- 16:58military might, and like the greatest accomplishments of
- 17:02mankind, all of it is worthless in the face of God.
- 17:07Verse 19. People will go into caves in the
- 17:09rocks and holes in the ground, away from the terror of Yahweh
- 17:12and from His majestic splendor. When He rises to terrify the
- 17:16earth on that day, people will throw their worthless idols of
- 17:19silver and gold which they made to worship, to the moles and the
- 17:23bats, these cave dwelling creatures.
- 17:25He says they will go into the caves of the rocks and the
- 17:28crevices in the cliffs, away from the terror of Yahweh and
- 17:31from His majestic splendor. When He rises to terrify the
- 17:35earth, put no more trust in a mere human who has only the
- 17:40breath in his nostrils. What is He really worth if you
- 17:45will? Don't rely on the other nations.
- 17:47Don't rely on gods. Don't rely on commerce.
- 17:49Don't rely on military might. Instead, trust only in God.
- 17:55And for you and I today, we can think that other things will
- 17:58keep us safe. We can think that people will be
- 18:01our ultimate answer and hear what God says is no.
- 18:05On that day of judgement, all that matters is your
- 18:08relationship with him. Because when God shows up, you
- 18:11can either be one of the people who have been awaiting him and
- 18:15you're excited to see your God. He is the one that you have
- 18:18wanted, the one you have lived for.
- 18:21Or he can be the one that you are accountable to, that you
- 18:25have rebelled against him, you have worshipped everything but
- 18:30him, or you have worshipped him and a bunch of other stuff.
- 18:33And on the day when Jesus returns, all that will matter is
- 18:37your relationship with the judge of the whole earth.
- 18:41Can I ask you today, do you know Him as your Lord and your
- 18:44Savior? There is no more important thing
- 18:47that you can know in life than if you have a relationship with
- 18:51God through Jesus Christ. I love the the pictures of this
- 18:56even as I think about Jesus's return.
- 18:59Certainly a a fearful day, a day of dread, but Oh my goodness, I
- 19:04cannot wait to see my Jesus in power, destroying all that is
- 19:09broken and evil in our world and in its place putting His
- 19:14ultimate goodness and righteousness.
- 19:16That there will be no more war and instead all the peoples will
- 19:21come to Jesus. We will be taught by Him.
- 19:25We will learn what to do and what is right from the mouth of
- 19:29the eternal Word, the Lamb who is slain and the Lion of Judah
- 19:35who reigns on the throne of his father David forever.
- 19:39Looking forward to that. Well, next episode we'll hit up
- 19:42chapter 3 and looking forward to that time with y'all.
