Finland had never done particularly well in the Eurovision, and many attributed this to the Finnish language, which was considered harsh and foreign. However, in 1977, Monica Aspelund and the song "Lapponia" were predicted to do well, despite the fact that the rule forcing entries to be sung in a native tongue had just been reintroduced, with some controversial exceptions.
