- 1:45Speaker 3: Adam and Eve Previously in our story, we witnessed the
- 1:50Speaker 3: creation of the universe. Out of chaos and nothingness, God
- 1:56Speaker 3: made everything. He spoke light and life into existence. The
- 2:01Speaker 3: glory of the skies, the galaxies, and the creatures of
- 2:04Speaker 3: the earth were made by God and declared to be good. Now,
- 2:10Speaker 3: we will learn more about the creation of man and woman,
- 2:14Speaker 3: made in the image of God, inspired by the book
- 2:17Speaker 3: of Genesis.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I'm so glad you joined us on the Bible in

- 3:09Speaker 2: That's jackgram.org, jackgram.org. In our previous episode, we heard about
- 3:16Speaker 2: the grand unfolding of God's act of creation, night and day, earth,
- 3:21Speaker 2: sky and seas, animals, plants, moon and stars, and humanity. Today,
- 3:27Speaker 2: we take a microscope to the pinnacle of God's creation,
- 3:30Speaker 2: man and woman, His image bearers. This is the story
- 3:35Speaker 2: of the very first humans. As you listen today, pay
- 3:39Speaker 2: close attention to how God creates man. how he stands
- 3:43Speaker 2: apart from the rest of creation. Notice the great care
- 3:47Speaker 2: God takes not only in forming man, but in providing
- 3:51Speaker 2: for him in every imaginable way, including a suitable companion,
- 3:56Speaker 2: one that was perfectly made for him. This isn't just
- 4:00Speaker 2: the dawn of humanity, but the dawn of marriage. Listen
- 4:03Speaker 2: for what this passage teaches about the design of marriage
- 4:06Speaker 2: and the designer of marriage. Finally, you'll encounter a choice
- 4:11Speaker 2: in today's story, a choice that God gives because he
- 4:14Speaker 2: is not interested in forced worship, compulsory obedience, or artificial
- 4:19Speaker 2: superficial love. This story reveals God's heart to you, his
- 4:25Speaker 2: care for you, his love for you. It's a story
- 4:29Speaker 2: about his desire for you to be fulfilled by him
- 4:32Speaker 2: and in him, and for you to choose a relationship
- 4:35Speaker 2: of trust with him. So come with me. And let's
- 4:39Speaker 2: take a look in Eden at the story of Adam
- 4:42Speaker 2: and Eve and the perfect garden God gave them.
- 4:48Speaker 3: The world was new and its refreshing mist was covering
- 4:52Speaker 3: the land. Streams and rivers flowed from the ground, giving
- 4:56Speaker 3: life to all plants and living creatures. Among the quiet
- 5:00Speaker 3: and new earth, God was at work. Personally and intricately,
- 5:05Speaker 3: God formed a man from the dust, as a potter
- 5:08Speaker 3: does with clay. Then he breathed life into him. God
- 5:13Speaker 3: named him and knew him. His name was Adam. God
- 5:18Speaker 3: made a dwelling place for Adam in a garden called Eden.
- 5:22Speaker 3: He placed Adam there, and it was filled with every
- 5:25Speaker 3: tree that is pleasant and good for food. In this garden,
- 5:30Speaker 3: man's relationship with God began. and with that relationship a
- 5:34Speaker 3: choice of free will. There were two trees in the garden.
- 5:39Speaker 3: One was the tree of life. The other was the
- 5:42Speaker 3: tree of knowledge of good and evil. God commissioned Adam, saying,
- 5:48Speaker 3: You may eat of every tree of the garden, but
- 5:51Speaker 3: not of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
- 5:55Speaker 3: For if you do, you shall surely die. This would
- 6:00Speaker 3: be Adam's choice. For God does not desire relationship without
- 6:04Speaker 3: free will. Adam was with God in paradise. He dwelt
- 6:09Speaker 3: in the garden that was filled with all things good.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Yet there was one thing that was not good. God said,
- 6:17Speaker 3: It is not good that man should be alone. So
- 6:21Speaker 3: the Lord caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep. God,
- 6:25Speaker 3: like a silent surgeon, took a rib from Adam's side.
- 6:30Speaker 3: FROM THIS RIB HE FORMED A WOMAN AND BREATHED LIFE
- 6:33Speaker 3: INTO HER. AT THIS MOMENT ADAM'S LONELINESS WAS QUIETED AND
- 6:39Speaker 3: HIS SOUL AND BODY WAS SATISFIED WITH HER. ADAM THEN
- 6:43Speaker 3: SANG TO HER AND THE TWO WERE MARRIED BEFORE GOD.
- 6:47Speaker 3: TO THIS DAY, THIS IS WHY A MAN WILL LEAVE
- 6:50Speaker 3: HIS FAMILY AND BECOME UNITED WITH HIS WIFE. THEY WERE
- 6:54Speaker 3: NAKED AND WITHOUT SHAME, FOR THERE WAS NO EVIL TO
- 6:58Speaker 3: CORRUPT THE PURITY OF THEIR UNITY They made love, ate
- 7:02Speaker 3: the food in the garden, and cared for the earth
- 7:05Speaker 3: and its animals. God was in the garden with them,
- 7:09Speaker 3: and it was still good. Yet there still remained a
- 7:12Speaker 3: choice to stray, a choice that would alter the course
- 7:17Speaker 3: of all creation.
- 7:20Speaker 2: The dawn of man. This was a different work of creation.
- 7:25Speaker 2: For all other created things, God merely spoke, and things
- 7:28Speaker 2: that were not suddenly were. But for humanity, it was different.
- 7:33Speaker 2: God took his own hands in the very dirt he
- 7:36Speaker 2: had created and formed man in the image of his
- 7:38Speaker 2: triune self. But he didn't stop there. He didn't just
- 7:42Speaker 2: fashion man with his hands. He breathed his very breath,
- 7:47Speaker 2: his breath of life into Adam. Then God created a
- 7:52Speaker 2: special place, a garden for Adam. Did you notice the
- 7:55Speaker 2: nature of God's relationship with Adam? This was not a
- 7:58Speaker 2: created being without choice, without freedom. God created a true
- 8:03Speaker 2: relationship with Adam, and so he gave mankind a choice.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Two trees, one full of good and life, the other
- 8:12Speaker 2: the path to broken relationship and an untimely death. And
- 8:16Speaker 2: it was in this garden that God and man were
- 8:19Speaker 2: to live in communion, knowing each other intimately. I imagine
- 8:24Speaker 2: this garden as the very best of the very best.
- 8:27Speaker 2: In a perfect creation, this was the most perfect place imaginable,
- 8:31Speaker 2: where every single need Adam had was met. Every need
- 8:36Speaker 2: except one, companionship and community. Our triune God knew that
- 8:43Speaker 2: to truly reflect his nature, this man would need to,
- 8:46Speaker 2: as he does with the Son and the Spirit, live
- 8:48Speaker 2: in community. Up to this point, God has said everything
- 8:51Speaker 2: was good, but looking at the lone man, he said
- 8:55Speaker 2: it was not. good. God created all the animals and
- 9:01Speaker 2: brought them to Adam, who named each one of them,
- 9:04Speaker 2: but none were a fitting match. You see, they were
- 9:08Speaker 2: not part of Adam's own flesh. They were distinctly different.
- 9:12Speaker 2: That simply would not do. So once again, God set
- 9:15Speaker 2: to work in creating with his own hands. Genesis 2,
- 9:19Speaker 2: 22 and 23 records the moment when God gave Adam
- 9:23Speaker 2: this beautiful gift of a companion. It says, And the
- 9:27Speaker 2: Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which he
- 9:30Speaker 2: had taken from the man and brought her to the man.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Then the man said, at last, this is bone of
- 9:36Speaker 2: my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be
- 9:39Speaker 2: called woman because she was taken out of man. God
- 9:43Speaker 2: gave Adam a helper, a perfect pair to be with
- 9:47Speaker 2: him for mutual satisfaction. Eve was created from man and
- 9:51Speaker 2: together they lived in a perfect place, at least for now.
- 9:55Speaker 2: but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Today's story tells
- 9:58Speaker 2: us something very important. about our need for community and companionship.
- 10:03Speaker 2: You see, whether you are married or not, God has
- 10:06Speaker 2: created you to be in communion with others. It is
- 10:09Speaker 2: not good to be alone. As God's image bearer, just
- 10:14Speaker 2: like Adam and Eve, you are made to live in community,
- 10:17Speaker 2: in unity, with others just as God Himself exists in unity.
- 10:22Speaker 2: And the highest expression of this unity is seen nowhere
- 10:25Speaker 2: better than in the marriage relationship, created by God right
- 10:29Speaker 2: there in the Garden of Eden. Likewise, this story shows
- 10:33Speaker 2: you that God has given you a choice. Like Adam
- 10:36Speaker 2: and Eve, you have before you the choice to follow
- 10:39Speaker 2: God or follow your own desires. It is a choice
- 10:42Speaker 2: between life eternal and death eternal. and it's the most
- 10:48Speaker 2: important choice you will ever make. Dear Heavenly Father, just
- 10:53Speaker 2: as you provided for Adam's every need, you continue to
- 10:56Speaker 2: do so for us today. You have created us for
- 11:00Speaker 2: community with others and with yourself, and we thank you
- 11:03Speaker 2: for that, O Lord. Help us to choose you and
- 11:06Speaker 2: your ways, God, the way of life everlasting in Jesus Christ. Amen.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
