Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So my name's Tom Kylie. I'm the vocalist of Patient
- 0:03Speaker 1: sixty seven. Yeah, we're a medical band from from Perth, Australia,
- 0:07Speaker 1: and we're lucky enough to be opening for Mice and
- 0:11Speaker 1: Men and Crystal Wake on their Australian tour in May,
- 0:13Speaker 1: which is very exciting.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Fantastic Tom, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:18Speaker 1: It's great to be here. Thank you for thank you
- 0:20Speaker 1: for chatting to us on this good Friday. It's a
- 0:22Speaker 1: great Friday, Great Friday.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Mae.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Moday hasn't been to my place yet, but I'm going
- 0:27Speaker 3: to hijack him on the way past.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Hopefully.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Good plan. Good plan.
- 0:32Speaker 3: So, as you say, Patient sixty seven hit the road
- 0:35Speaker 3: next month for a run of shows with Mice and
- 0:37Speaker 3: Men and Crystal Lake, starting in Perth on May the
- 0:40Speaker 3: fifth and in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, finishing in Brizee on
- 0:44Speaker 3: May the tenth, not too far away.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Rather than you're packed and ready to.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Gay, Yeah, well, I think I think we've been doing
- 0:51Speaker 1: a lot of planning over the last couple of weeks,
- 0:53Speaker 1: you know, not just getting ready for the shows, but
- 0:55Speaker 1: also just logistically, you know, making sure where we're all organized.
- 0:59Speaker 4: And yeah, it's it's hard.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It's you know, sort of a pitch pitch ourselves sort
- 1:03Speaker 1: of tour in a lot of ways. You know, we've
- 1:05Speaker 1: we've always loved you know and listened to a Mice
- 1:08Speaker 1: and Men and you know, just to get the opportunity
- 1:11Speaker 1: to be a part of a tool out this is
- 1:13Speaker 1: is just incredibly humbling and yeah, we can't wait. We're
- 1:15Speaker 1: counting down the day, so bring it.
- 1:17Speaker 2: On, Mantassic.
- 1:19Speaker 3: And you guys are no strangers to international supports, for
- 1:22Speaker 3: you've done a few over the years, but this one's
- 1:24Speaker 3: got to be pretty special made.
- 1:25Speaker 2: It's got to be up there.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah absolutely. I mean we've been we've been lucky enough
- 1:29Speaker 1: over the over the journey to support some pretty incredible artists,
- 1:33Speaker 1: both both Australian bands and some internationals as well. And yeah,
- 1:37Speaker 1: definitely this is the this is the first time we've
- 1:39Speaker 1: joined an international band on a full Australian tour, So yeah,
- 1:44Speaker 1: it's definitely a step.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Forward for us.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And yeah, we're just trying to take the opportunity with
- 1:49Speaker 1: both hands. And you know, for anyone who does come
- 1:51Speaker 1: out to the shows a little bit earlier, I know,
- 1:53Speaker 1: if Mice and Men have a have a great presence
- 1:55Speaker 1: in Australia. They have a great fan base you know,
- 1:57Speaker 1: across the world, but in Australia. I know their shows
- 1:59Speaker 1: here do really well. So if anyone who does come early,
- 2:02Speaker 1: we're just excited to get the chance to play for
- 2:05Speaker 1: those people and hopefully introduce a few new people to
- 2:07Speaker 1: our band, which is you know what it's all about,
- 2:10Speaker 1: so can't wait.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Also, where do you think you actually fit into the
- 2:14Speaker 3: sonic package of the three bands made?
- 2:16Speaker 2: Like what's what's Space sixty seven got by you?
- 2:19Speaker 4: Thank Yeah, it's a great question, Chris. I think I
- 2:21Speaker 4: think you know.
- 2:22Speaker 1: What we do is we definitely have elements of the
- 2:26Speaker 1: heavier side of metalcore, which you know both bands, but
- 2:29Speaker 1: both bands certainly do. But I think it's that, you know,
- 2:31Speaker 1: it's an Australian sort of twist on the metal core sound,
- 2:33Speaker 1: which I think people really love. We've got the we've
- 2:35Speaker 1: got the you know, big riffs, and then we've got
- 2:37Speaker 1: the you know, the breakdowns, and I think just as
- 2:39Speaker 1: well being able to bring in that that mix of
- 2:42Speaker 1: melodic and heavy, which I think, you know, this tour
- 2:44Speaker 1: does really really well.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I think we're going to compliment both bands nicely, and
- 2:49Speaker 4: you know, get to hear.
- 2:50Speaker 1: You know, for a lot of people, they might hopefully
- 2:53Speaker 1: or might not have heard of us before, so you know,
- 2:56Speaker 1: it's an introduction to our band and some of the
- 2:58Speaker 1: sort of Australian Australian at acre which you know, I
- 3:01Speaker 1: think anyone who goes to shows regularly in Australia knows
- 3:03Speaker 1: that it's something that our country is very good at
- 3:05Speaker 1: is bringing you know, good heavy music to people. So
- 3:09Speaker 1: we're just happy to be a part of something like that.
- 3:12Speaker 3: So what sort of attitude do you hit the stage
- 3:15Speaker 3: with a big supports on this made Like, do you
- 3:17Speaker 3: just go out there and do your job to warm
- 3:19Speaker 3: up the crowd or do you go out there with
- 3:20Speaker 3: the attitude that you're going to bury fucking internationals and sharp?
- 3:23Speaker 4: What do you got?
- 3:24Speaker 2: Like, what's the sort of mindset?
- 3:26Speaker 4: Yeah, a good question as well.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I think, you know, I think for us, we just
- 3:30Speaker 1: want to want to be ourselves. I think obviously we
- 3:32Speaker 1: want to make sure that we bring a high level
- 3:34Speaker 1: of energy and intensity because we know that you know,
- 3:38Speaker 1: ultimately our role on the tour is to get the
- 3:41Speaker 1: crowd warmed up, to get the crowd moving, to get
- 3:43Speaker 1: the crowd excited for the bands that are coming after us,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and you know, by doing that it sort of leands
- 3:48Speaker 1: nicely into what we like to sort of do anyway,
- 3:50Speaker 1: which is, yeah, play with a lot of energy, get
- 3:52Speaker 1: the crowd involved, me very interactive, you know, and try
- 3:55Speaker 1: and bring that sort of spark to the stage.
- 3:57Speaker 4: And then you know, after.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Our sets finished, hopefully people are even more excited for
- 4:01Speaker 1: the for the next few bands. So by the time
- 4:04Speaker 1: and you know, opening it's always tricky because you you know,
- 4:07Speaker 1: the crowd's definitely the most a lot of the times,
- 4:09Speaker 1: you know, it's still getting warmed up, maybe not moving
- 4:11Speaker 1: as much. So it's our job to sort of to
- 4:13Speaker 1: sort of shake off any cobwebs people have had if
- 4:15Speaker 1: they haven't been to a show in a while. You know,
- 4:17Speaker 1: what can we sort of do to get people banging
- 4:19Speaker 1: their heads, you know, maybe getting a mosh bit going.
- 4:21Speaker 1: And you know, we find a lot of the times
- 4:23Speaker 1: it shows once you start talking to the crowd and
- 4:25Speaker 1: interacting with them, you know, there's not a lot of
- 4:28Speaker 1: you know, there's there's a lot of people who are
- 4:30Speaker 1: ready to ready to get moving. Yeah, if we can
- 4:32Speaker 1: get a few mosh pits going, that'll be that'll be
- 4:34Speaker 1: a highlight for sure ly.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Now, say someone's come along and they haven't even heard
- 4:39Speaker 3: of Patient sixty seven before, mate, Like, what three songs
- 4:42Speaker 3: in your should they listen to before they come?
- 4:43Speaker 2: So they got to idea what to expect.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Yeah, this is this is good.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I like I like the question because we we think
- 4:49Speaker 1: we have We're pretty fortunate in a sense.
- 4:50Speaker 4: We have a pretty sort of growing catalog.
- 4:53Speaker 1: You know, we've released an album and a bunch of EPs,
- 4:55Speaker 1: some collaborations and things like that. I think would say, obviously,
- 4:58Speaker 1: listen to probably our songs. Added I think that's a
- 5:01Speaker 1: really good starting point because it does blend that sort
- 5:03Speaker 1: of heaviness with the with the melodic side of things.
- 5:07Speaker 1: If they're after something a little bit heavier, I'd say
- 5:09Speaker 1: check out our songs shed My Skin, because that's just
- 5:12Speaker 1: both of the wall heavy, And then I'd probably say.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Our newer song Barricade.
- 5:18Speaker 1: It sort of leads into a little bit more of
- 5:19Speaker 1: the I don't want to say softer side, but definitely
- 5:21Speaker 1: a little bit more of the a little bit more.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Of the melodic elements that our band can bring.
- 5:25Speaker 1: You know, it's got a sort of an electronicy sort
- 5:27Speaker 1: of feel, you know, big chorus and things like that.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So yeah, i'd say probably Scattered, shed my Skin and Barricade,
- 5:33Speaker 1: and you know we'll be playing all three of those
- 5:36Speaker 1: on the tour as well, So.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Yeah, a good chance for people who want to know
- 5:39Speaker 4: when the.
- 5:40Speaker 1: When the big breakdowns are coming and when the when
- 5:42Speaker 1: the mosh callout is going to be happening.
- 5:43Speaker 4: There are three songs they can they can get around
- 5:45Speaker 4: for sure.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Now, what do you do in a support like this,
- 5:49Speaker 3: bro Like, as you say, you've got a fair few
- 5:51Speaker 3: songs to draw on and you probably haven't got that
- 5:53Speaker 3: big a settlers, So do you tell the setlist to
- 5:55Speaker 3: sort of try and fit in with the other bands
- 5:58Speaker 3: and what you think the crowd like, or do you
- 5:59Speaker 3: go out there and play. You put your best foot
- 6:01Speaker 3: forward to play all your best tunes and hope people
- 6:03Speaker 3: like them.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 1: I think we definitely have tailored this set to to
- 6:07Speaker 1: what we feel will be a good opening sort of
- 6:10Speaker 1: set of songs.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Knowing I mean, we'll be doing.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Headliner later in the year and the setlist for that
- 6:16Speaker 1: will look different because we are going to cover a
- 6:18Speaker 1: bit more so ground, whereas a set like this, where
- 6:21Speaker 1: it might be a little bit shorter but it really
- 6:23Speaker 1: gives you an opportunity just to pick songs that you
- 6:25Speaker 1: think are gonna are going to serve serve the crowd
- 6:29Speaker 1: in terms of, yeah, bring that real big energy from
- 6:32Speaker 1: start to finish.
- 6:33Speaker 4: So I think we do keep that.
- 6:34Speaker 1: In mind, you know, because we know that we we
- 6:37Speaker 1: also want to introduce people to the band as well,
- 6:38Speaker 1: So we want to pick songs that we think, you know,
- 6:40Speaker 1: have have done well in the past, but also songs
- 6:42Speaker 1: that translate really well live, you know, as an opening act.
- 6:46Speaker 1: So that's definitely at the front of our mind and
- 6:47Speaker 1: how we've built the set list, and yeah, it's gonna
- 6:51Speaker 1: be it's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Now, I hope I've done my research probably here mate,
- 6:55Speaker 3: And what I can tell your most recent single, The End,
- 6:58Speaker 3: came out in October last Yeah, yeah, was at the
- 7:01Speaker 3: start of a new album cycle or was it finishing
- 7:03Speaker 3: the last one?
- 7:04Speaker 4: This is a great question and we haven't had the
- 7:05Speaker 4: chance to speak on this yet. So The End. So
- 7:08Speaker 4: we did three single what we technically we did four
- 7:10Speaker 4: because we did.
- 7:11Speaker 1: The Deluxe at the start of last year which had
- 7:14Speaker 1: our song impaired on there. Then we did three standalone
- 7:16Speaker 1: singles which was Barricade, phil a Life two in the end. Now,
- 7:19Speaker 1: none of those are going to be part of the
- 7:21Speaker 1: new album we're working on. We're working on a brand
- 7:23Speaker 1: new album at the moment. The band's been in and
- 7:25Speaker 1: out of Melbourne the last couple of months recording and
- 7:29Speaker 1: we'll continue to be doing that, some of it here,
- 7:31Speaker 1: some of it over eased, so we'll be doing a
- 7:32Speaker 1: brand new album, all completely unreleased songs that people haven't heard,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and we'll be playing one of those new songs on
- 7:39Speaker 1: the tour, so for people who haven't had the chance
- 7:41Speaker 1: to hear us before, they'll get a taste of some
- 7:44Speaker 1: new music, which is really exciting. So yeah, the end
- 7:48Speaker 1: was sort of, I guess, sort of the end of
- 7:50Speaker 1: an era for the band a lot of ways as
- 7:51Speaker 1: we sort of look forward to what's next in twenty
- 7:54Speaker 1: twenty six and beyond. So there were three stand alone
- 7:57Speaker 1: so it was ones where we're really proud of. But yeah,
- 8:00Speaker 1: a brand new we're working on a brand new record
- 8:01Speaker 1: at the moment.
- 8:03Speaker 3: And as you say, like at the end, was the
- 8:05Speaker 3: end of an era in some respects, but h your
- 8:07Speaker 3: press release says that the new music HOWLDS has started
- 8:10Speaker 3: a new era so can you elaborate on that a
- 8:12Speaker 3: bitch for us?
- 8:13Speaker 1: Yeah, so, I think I think when we when we
- 8:16Speaker 1: released Barricade and we started that sort of run of singles,
- 8:21Speaker 1: we weren't really sure what direction the band was taking
- 8:24Speaker 1: at that point. We weren't one hundred percent sure how
- 8:26Speaker 1: that would look, you know, in twenty twenty six and beyond.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I mean to be honest, at the time of Barricade
- 8:31Speaker 1: coming out and even writing that press release, I didn't
- 8:34Speaker 1: even know if I had another album, Like, I didn't
- 8:37Speaker 1: know what the future held. And you know, a lot
- 8:39Speaker 1: of stuff's happened in our personal lives, good things, but
- 8:42Speaker 1: obviously there's been some ups and downs in my personal
- 8:45Speaker 1: life over the last twelve what probably eighteen months, I
- 8:47Speaker 1: want to say, and I wasn't sure whether the band
- 8:49Speaker 1: would would get another leased on life. And then you know,
- 8:51Speaker 1: it was sort of late last year where things started
- 8:54Speaker 1: to sort of click for me and the band and
- 8:56Speaker 1: it was clear that we still had another record in
- 8:58Speaker 1: us and we weren't We wanted to keep going and
- 9:00Speaker 1: keep progressing, and you know, we're so thankful that a
- 9:03Speaker 1: tool like this has opened up for us, because it
- 9:05Speaker 1: really has just given us the you know, the motivation
- 9:10Speaker 1: and the you know, the drive to really continue to grow.
- 9:14Speaker 1: You know, being in a band's heart, it takes a
- 9:15Speaker 1: lot of work. I don't need to tell you that, Chris.
- 9:17Speaker 1: It's it's it's challenging. But yeah, but but realistically we
- 9:22Speaker 1: said that, you know, we've still got a lot to give,
- 9:24Speaker 1: We've got a lot of heart in this band. And yeah,
- 9:26Speaker 1: so the End and those other two singles were sort
- 9:29Speaker 1: of you know, a short a short lived era for
- 9:31Speaker 1: the band in the sense of we weren't sure at
- 9:34Speaker 1: that point where we were going.
- 9:35Speaker 4: But now now going forward, I have no doubt.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to have another another record, another full
- 9:39Speaker 1: length album, all things being equal, that will be working
- 9:43Speaker 1: on and it'll be a brand new sound for the
- 9:45Speaker 1: band and something that will lead nicely off the back
- 9:47Speaker 1: of this tour.
- 9:48Speaker 4: So bring it on.
- 9:50Speaker 3: So musically, is that what fans would expect from Pat
- 9:54Speaker 3: sixty seventy, isn't it?
- 9:56Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 9:56Speaker 1: I think Look, I personally think that this is like
- 9:59Speaker 1: a just the more polished, more modern.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Version of the band.
- 10:03Speaker 1: I think we've really tried to with these new songs
- 10:07Speaker 1: and the sort of people get to hear a taste
- 10:09Speaker 1: of it, on the tour, but.
- 10:10Speaker 4: We've really just tried to step everything up.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I felt like we got probably a little bit relaxed
- 10:15Speaker 1: after the album came out. I mean only in the
- 10:17Speaker 1: sense of we were just we just kept doing single
- 10:20Speaker 1: after single after single. Because it's a content heavy world, right,
- 10:23Speaker 1: I mean, your band's always having to be busy. It
- 10:25Speaker 1: sort of speaks to the to the pressures, even at
- 10:27Speaker 1: more of a local level, to constantly have songs in
- 10:29Speaker 1: the works and coming out, and it is quite stressful
- 10:32Speaker 1: because if you sort of take your foot off the pedal,
- 10:33Speaker 1: you can sort.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Of feel like you're running behind. But with these new songs,
- 10:36Speaker 4: we really are.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Taking the time to map everything out, start to finish,
- 10:40Speaker 1: create a really cohesive record. It's still very very it's
- 10:43Speaker 1: still got some very very heavy elements. It's got, you know,
- 10:47Speaker 1: I'll be doing all vocals on the new record, which
- 10:49Speaker 1: is the first time that's happened. I'm incredibly excited about
- 10:52Speaker 1: that because I've been able to really, you.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Know, hone in on my writing process and tell the
- 10:56Speaker 4: stories I want to tell. There's some great features on
- 10:59Speaker 4: that album as well, and it's.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Just going to be Yeah, Page sixty seven I think
- 11:04Speaker 1: as best as we've ever sounded. But we're not going
- 11:06Speaker 1: to be straying, you know, incredibly too far from what
- 11:08Speaker 1: people know. I think, you know, if anything, you know,
- 11:10Speaker 1: people like things like riffs, breakdowns, and choruses.
- 11:12Speaker 4: I think we're bringing that, you know, the best way
- 11:14Speaker 4: that we ever have.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Fantastic Now the ogwised mentor finishes up on the sense
- 11:19Speaker 3: of Maybro. So what's the rest of twenty twenty six
- 11:22Speaker 3: moving forward look like?
- 11:23Speaker 1: For Yeah, it's it's a great question because I think
- 11:27Speaker 1: I think ultimately there's a couple of things, like like
- 11:29Speaker 1: I said, where we've got some headliner dates plans closer
- 11:33Speaker 1: to the middle of the year, and then you know
- 11:34Speaker 1: after that where you know, our heads are going to
- 11:37Speaker 1: be down working on this record for sure, but we're
- 11:39Speaker 1: certainly open to any other opportunities.
- 11:42Speaker 4: That come up. We're still very much.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Looking at America and what international touring might look like.
- 11:46Speaker 1: We're doing a lot of work in the background on
- 11:48Speaker 1: getting ourselves ready for an opportunity like that, really planning
- 11:51Speaker 1: it out, making sure we have all the puzzle pieces
- 11:54Speaker 1: set because you know, I mean, I feel like we've
- 11:58Speaker 1: seen more and more of it now where bands are
- 11:59Speaker 1: like going international and that it's very hard to get
- 12:01Speaker 1: visas and things like that. That's very real, and I
- 12:03Speaker 1: think we're one of the I was very like vocal
- 12:06Speaker 1: about that when it happened, because I feel like people
- 12:08Speaker 1: don't necessarily understand the mechanics. But we are really planning
- 12:12Speaker 1: that forward and looking and looking forward to what that
- 12:15Speaker 1: might look like next year potentially for some international touring,
- 12:18Speaker 1: but for this year, it's going to be all about
- 12:20Speaker 1: this new record, and you know, any touring opportunities along
- 12:23Speaker 1: the way we're certainly going to be open to. So yeah,
- 12:26Speaker 1: it's been a it's been a massive year already for
- 12:28Speaker 1: us with Froth and Fury, you know, working on the
- 12:32Speaker 1: new record and this to us, so everything else that
- 12:34Speaker 1: comes after that's going to be Yeah, it's it's just
- 12:37Speaker 1: it's going to be a defining year for the band.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I feel like fantastic toim what thanks very much for
- 12:42Speaker 2: your time.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Rason Mentor with Crystal Lake kicks off in per I
- 12:46Speaker 3: made the fifth and hits all the capital cities, So
- 12:48Speaker 3: best of luck with a brother and I see it
- 12:50Speaker 3: the Brisbane show.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Kwait Chris, thank you so much.
