- 0:30Speaker 2: the hostages should be freedom the next few days. Meanwhile,
- 0:40Speaker 2: nearly five hundred people have been handcuffed in London for
- 0:43Speaker 2: supporting a pro Palestine group there saying in Europe putent's.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Not the implication behind and the argument is that these
- 0:56Speaker 3: are hate archers.
- 0:57Speaker 4: They are not.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I have, as a juced person over sid nothing but
- 1:01Speaker 3: love and respect on these marches, and I've been attending
- 1:04Speaker 3: every week for two.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Years, staying in Europe. Now Potin's not living up on Ukraine.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Five did power counts the South of missiles and drones overnight?
- 1:12Speaker 5: According to the President of Vladimir Zelensky, around five hundred
- 1:16Speaker 5: drones potentially fired at the country, along with possibly fifty
- 1:20Speaker 5: ballistic and cruised missiles. Now mainly the west of the
- 1:24Speaker 5: country was targeted. The city and the region of Leviv
- 1:28Speaker 5: in particular were hit.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Finally, this morning, the Broncos had defeated the Melbourne Storm
- 1:33Speaker 2: twenty six twenty two at the Inner l Grand Final
- 1:35Speaker 2: of the Core studiument Sydney. The start of the show
- 1:38Speaker 2: was fullback Race Walsh was Teckle after Teckle after try
- 1:43Speaker 2: stopping Tekele.
- 1:44Speaker 6: Walsh's Everywhere shows a cutter door, Shibasaki, Shita, sakis God,
- 1:51Speaker 6: the Broncos have theload.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Get ahead of the headlines on a early edition with
- 1:59Speaker 1: Brian Bridge and r the Supercenter explore r VS accessories
- 2:04Speaker 1: and servicing all in one news talks.
- 2:06Speaker 2: That'd be nine two the number sexts me this morning,
- 2:09Speaker 2: Big oc Arcle coming this week by the way, and
- 2:11Speaker 2: hawksby obviously still they're still in charge. Even though we
- 2:14Speaker 2: knew that Anna's coming. She's gone back to Sweden, should
- 2:16Speaker 2: be packing all of her hiking gear into a suitcase
- 2:20Speaker 2: and moving down here for December first, which is her
- 2:23Speaker 2: first day, her first day with her feet under the desk.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Now the markets have pretty much fifty to fifty on this.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Everyone's kind of throwing their hands up in the air.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Are they going to do a double whammy or are
- 2:32Speaker 2: they going to do just a single twenty five basis
- 2:34Speaker 2: point cut On Wednesday, we're at three percent now, inflation
- 2:38Speaker 2: spiking again. But they should look through that couple of
- 2:41Speaker 2: doves at that last meeting. You remember who decided that,
- 2:44Speaker 2: hell with it, we're going for a double They were
- 2:46Speaker 2: voted down. But are they still there in the room?
- 2:50Speaker 2: Hawks By they reckon, it'll be a bit more cautious
- 2:52Speaker 2: because he's on the way out, will kind of go
- 2:54Speaker 2: with whatever the consensus is. Buckle has left his reply,
- 2:59Speaker 2: and he was quite hawkish. His replacement may just go
- 3:03Speaker 2: with the consensus too. So the question then becomes, what
- 3:05Speaker 2: will the consensus be. Well, we don't know because we're
- 3:08Speaker 2: not in the room, but the composition of the Monetary
- 3:10Speaker 2: Policy Committee has certainly changed now the day before the
- 3:15Speaker 2: quite influential NZI September quarter Business survey will be out.
- 3:19Speaker 2: That comes out the day before, and you wouldn't expect
- 3:22Speaker 2: them to make a decision based on that, but it
- 3:23Speaker 2: will be important this one. So we'll make sure you're
- 3:26Speaker 2: across that, you know, do we go it? Does it
- 3:29Speaker 2: show that we're in an even bigger hole than we
- 3:32Speaker 2: were in quarter two or that we haven't quite dug
- 3:34Speaker 2: out of it? Or are there signs of life? Do
- 3:37Speaker 2: we go single? Do we go double? Those will be
- 3:39Speaker 2: the questions before Arna even gets to work. Coming up next,
- 3:43Speaker 2: it is Crime on Bail, News Talk SEB, Views.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And Views You Trust to start your day. It's early
- 3:51Speaker 1: edition with Bryan Bridge and are the Supercenter explore? Are
- 3:55Speaker 1: these accessories and servicing fall?
- 3:57Speaker 3: In one?
- 3:58Speaker 2: News Talks B five twelve. Couple of good little bits
- 4:00Speaker 2: of news for your Monday morning. Two hundred and fifteen
- 4:03Speaker 2: million dollars were taken out a kiwisaver and early withdrawls.
- 4:06Speaker 2: This is for August now that's first home buys and
- 4:09Speaker 2: for people who are struggling with hardship, which means that
- 4:12Speaker 2: it is up seventeen percent then a year prior, but
- 4:15Speaker 2: it is going up at a slower rate. In fact,
- 4:18Speaker 2: hardship has now either fallen or been flat since its peak,
- 4:23Speaker 2: which was in twenty twenty three, So that's a good thing.
- 4:26Speaker 2: The other good thing to know this morning is oil
- 4:29Speaker 2: APEC Plus have decided in their infinite wisdom to push
- 4:34Speaker 2: out some more barrels in extra one hundred and thirty
- 4:36Speaker 2: seven thousand barrels a day in November. This will match
- 4:39Speaker 2: their increase for October. They are trying to regain some
- 4:42Speaker 2: market share. The Americans have taken a bit from them.
- 4:45Speaker 2: The Americans price down thirteen percent this year because of
- 4:49Speaker 2: the increased production. They're worried about a glutch. And if
- 4:52Speaker 2: you're worried about a glutch, that means good news for
- 4:54Speaker 2: the price of oil. So that's all happening this month
- 4:56Speaker 2: and next News.
- 4:57Speaker 7: Talks their b Spray and Bridge.
- 5:00Speaker 2: We've got new numbers out this morning on crime. While
- 5:03Speaker 2: on bail, Ministry of Justice figures show convictions jumped by
- 5:06Speaker 2: nearly twelve thousand between twenty fifteen and twenty twenty four.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Homicides doubled from ten to twenty five over that time,
- 5:13Speaker 2: with court backlogs taking up much of the blame. Steve Callen,
- 5:15Speaker 2: criminal lawyer, with us this morning. Steve, Good morning, Good morning.
- 5:19Speaker 2: So what is this telling us?
- 5:22Speaker 8: Well, the figures are a little bit confusing, to be honest,
- 5:25Speaker 8: There's been a ten year period. There's no doubt that
- 5:28Speaker 8: there are increases occurring in crimes, but then everything else
- 5:33Speaker 8: is going up as well. You'd want to be a
- 5:37Speaker 8: praised of the demographics of society. Are we getting an
- 5:40Speaker 8: increase in the proportion of youth? Are we getting an
- 5:43Speaker 8: increase in the proportion of young people before the courts?
- 5:46Speaker 8: Are there more gang members? We know that there are
- 5:49Speaker 8: more drug abusers. It's a concerning statistic, but in the
- 5:53Speaker 8: absence of more information, it's hard to derive any really
- 5:57Speaker 8: concrete decisions from it.
- 6:00Speaker 2: A bit more context, doesn't it, Steve.
- 6:01Speaker 8: What are you saying, Well, certainly we're seeing that people
- 6:07Speaker 8: are sometimes noncompliant with bail, and they certainly do go
- 6:11Speaker 8: on to commit further offending. This release talks about fears
- 6:16Speaker 8: that the offense is that people are on bail go
- 6:19Speaker 8: and commit somehow pertain to existing victims. Well, I haven't
- 6:23Speaker 8: seen any particular evidence of that. They do go on
- 6:26Speaker 8: to commit more offenses, but that's just the nature of
- 6:29Speaker 8: the beast. I'm afraid when they deal with criminal law.
- 6:32Speaker 8: The period they're talking about spans, for example, the period
- 6:34Speaker 8: when we had COVID, when we had ram raids. What
- 6:38Speaker 8: we are seeing, I think, in my own view, is
- 6:40Speaker 8: that there's been a bit of a decline in respect
- 6:43Speaker 8: for law and order and institutions that seems to be worldwide.
- 6:47Speaker 8: It's come through social media and it seems to be
- 6:50Speaker 8: almost reflected in some of the people's attitudes towards bail
- 6:54Speaker 8: were the less of a mind to take it seriously.
- 6:58Speaker 8: But let's not forget over eighty percent of people who
- 7:02Speaker 8: are on electronically monitored bail, for example, are compliant.
- 7:06Speaker 2: If you get bail once and then stuff, you'll bail up,
- 7:09Speaker 2: do you get bail again.
- 7:12Speaker 8: It's not automatic. It needs a legitimate reason to explain
- 7:15Speaker 8: why there were difficulties with bail, and then the courts
- 7:18Speaker 8: would look at all the surrounding circumstances. It's not a
- 7:21Speaker 8: total prohibition, but it's most certainly taken into account in
- 7:26Speaker 8: later hearings. And yes, it will impact on your ability
- 7:29Speaker 8: to get bailed that you've breached to bail in the past.
- 7:33Speaker 8: And what's of even more important is that if people
- 7:36Speaker 8: are on electronically monitored sentences and violate those, then there's
- 7:40Speaker 8: a higher likelihood that they're not going to receive a
- 7:43Speaker 8: similar sentence. Are in electronically monitored sentence when it comes
- 7:47Speaker 8: to sentencing, so they'll face imprisonment.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Well that makes sense to me, Steve, thanks for that,
- 7:52Speaker 2: Steve Cullen. Criminal Royal time is sixteen after five news Talk,
- 7:56Speaker 2: said b.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Ryan Bridge on early edition with r V Supercenter explore
- 8:03Speaker 1: RV's accessories and servicing all in one news talks.
- 8:06Speaker 2: That be it is eighteen minutes after five. So one
- 8:09Speaker 2: hundred and twenty two thousand people become eligible today for
- 8:12Speaker 2: free screening in their first year. This is Bowe's screening
- 8:16Speaker 2: been lowered from sixty down to fifty eight years. This
- 8:19Speaker 2: is for Northland, Auckland and South Auckland. The rest of
- 8:23Speaker 2: the North Island is going to follow in March next year,
- 8:26Speaker 2: and then everybody else after that. By twenty twenty seven
- 8:30Speaker 2: it should be fifty eight everywhere. Now you might have
- 8:32Speaker 2: heard in the news there's a big debate about some
- 8:35Speaker 2: ethnic groups were allowed to have their screening done I
- 8:38Speaker 2: think from the age of fifty much earlier than the
- 8:41Speaker 2: rest of the general population. And people have said, well,
- 8:43Speaker 2: and that's been taken away, so that's now going to
- 8:45Speaker 2: be fifty eight for everyone, And people are saying, well,
- 8:48Speaker 2: that's not fear. The Ministry of Health data shows that
- 8:53Speaker 2: you will save more lives overall by making this change
- 8:58Speaker 2: to fifty eight for everybody than you would by having
- 9:01Speaker 2: bespoke tailored approaches by ethnicity. So what is the Ministry
- 9:07Speaker 2: of Health's job? Is it to keep the biggest number
- 9:10Speaker 2: of people healthy and happy as possible? And if so,
- 9:14Speaker 2: then is that not right? The right call? Nineteen minutes
- 9:16Speaker 2: after five, graham Bridge great in her old Grand Final
- 9:20Speaker 2: over at the weekend. Let's talk about Steve Walsh. What
- 9:24Speaker 2: a restaurant for rather what an amazing game he had?
- 9:28Speaker 9: Look right, I'm a bit bleary eye this morning because
- 9:31Speaker 9: I did stay up and watch it. It was just
- 9:33Speaker 9: so compelling and Brisbane really earned that one. I mean
- 9:36Speaker 9: twenty six twenty two, and I mean they talk about
- 9:38Speaker 9: Reese lightning, don't they, And he was everywhere. It was
- 9:43Speaker 9: the most I mean they talk about as one of
- 9:44Speaker 9: the most influential Grand Final performances, and of course taking
- 9:47Speaker 9: the Clive Churchill Medal. I mean, I don't know what's
- 9:50Speaker 9: in the toilet water at Reese Walsh's place, but it
- 9:53Speaker 9: is something special because on defense, on attack, he was
- 9:56Speaker 9: setting up everything and he talked about them. You know,
- 9:59Speaker 9: you want to hear in the balls there with the
- 10:00Speaker 9: moneyball he'd delivered at one point there. It was he
- 10:04Speaker 9: just set it all up in phenomenal performance from Brismon
- 10:07Speaker 9: and Melbourne finishing the second again as a result of that.
- 10:10Speaker 7: But pretty hard to turn that down.
- 10:11Speaker 9: I mean Melbourne were up twenty to twelve yes at
- 10:15Speaker 9: halftime and Brisbane of getting scoreless in the second half
- 10:18Speaker 9: and added on fourteen points I mean whilst making the
- 10:21Speaker 9: try saving.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Tackle effectively as well. Yeah, it was.
- 10:24Speaker 7: It was quite phenomenal.
- 10:26Speaker 9: And I mean they'd lost being Hunt to concussion as well,
- 10:29Speaker 9: Skipper Adam Reynolds had limped off with the carpentery in
- 10:33Speaker 9: the second half, so yeah, they had it all to
- 10:34Speaker 9: play for.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and especially after all the stuff that's been going
- 10:38Speaker 2: on in his personal life, his daughter and all that
- 10:41Speaker 2: sort of stuff.
- 10:42Speaker 9: So just that, I mean a lot of the time
- 10:44Speaker 9: with sports people it's had ability to compartmentalize, and people
- 10:48Speaker 9: in any professional image when things are going on and
- 10:51Speaker 9: they're able to just put it to one side and
- 10:53Speaker 9: still do their job in that fashion.
- 10:55Speaker 7: So yeah, phenomenal to watch.
- 10:56Speaker 2: How about that was? Yeah, that's right.
- 10:58Speaker 9: So taking that with the new South Wales taking it
- 11:02Speaker 9: out in terms of the what we call it the
- 11:05Speaker 9: second tier. If you like so yes, I promised there
- 11:08Speaker 9: for the Warriors at that at that second level.
- 11:10Speaker 2: And the we did it.
- 11:13Speaker 9: But MESSI yeah, this is relatively clinical in a way,
- 11:17Speaker 9: and that they just did what they needed to do.
- 11:19Speaker 9: I thought just from watching that game, just piecing it
- 11:22Speaker 9: together in the wet there in Perth. I think the
- 11:26Speaker 9: Rugby Championship probably finished the way it should have done,
- 11:28Speaker 9: those so Africa winning it of course, with that narrow
- 11:30Speaker 9: victory over Argentina twigging them, but I think probably looking
- 11:34Speaker 9: ahead now, I'm looking forward to seeing the Abits with
- 11:37Speaker 9: that potential to take a Grand Slam. That always adds
- 11:40Speaker 9: another element to an end of year tour if you
- 11:42Speaker 9: can beat all the home nations and that's all coming up,
- 11:46Speaker 9: starting with the Ireland and the States.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yeah, fantastic looking forward to that.
- 11:50Speaker 10: Now.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Dame Knowles, this is just going getting ridiculous now, so
- 11:54Speaker 2: she's out for the for the rest of the season now,
- 11:57Speaker 2: Slation Cup lawyers are involved, and it looks like the
- 12:01Speaker 2: only place left for it to go might be the
- 12:03Speaker 2: employment relations or things.
- 12:05Speaker 9: That's that's messy, that is, I mean, I think that
- 12:08Speaker 9: was the one chance to resolve it, and now I
- 12:11Speaker 9: just can't see that getting any healthier.
- 12:13Speaker 7: Really, it seems quite quite bitter.
- 12:17Speaker 2: What do you how do you read into that? Do
- 12:18Speaker 2: you think that there must be a hardcore group of
- 12:21Speaker 2: players who are just dead against her that are holding
- 12:23Speaker 2: on There must be otherwise neckble New Zealand surely would.
- 12:26Speaker 7: Just oh yeah, for sure.
- 12:27Speaker 9: Otherwise you would have resolution and have compromise, and you
- 12:31Speaker 9: would meet somewhere in the middle and there would be
- 12:34Speaker 9: not necessarily a mere culple, but a resolution that you
- 12:37Speaker 9: would I negotiate together about what had gone on and etc.
- 12:43Speaker 7: But who's to know behind the scenes what's what's really
- 12:45Speaker 7: gone on.
- 12:46Speaker 9: It seems to be fairly complicated at the negotiation table there,
- 12:49Speaker 9: and it's going to continue and go to another level
- 12:52Speaker 9: by this out of it.
- 12:52Speaker 7: But that is messy. Indeed.
- 12:55Speaker 2: If one, you've got an upboat for us this morning, Oh.
- 12:57Speaker 7: Yeah, that was well.
- 12:58Speaker 9: Construction Championships been sided with McLaren taking it out, albeit
- 13:02Speaker 9: some internal bickering between past three and Lando Norris in
- 13:06Speaker 9: that regard. But George Russell has won the race for
- 13:08Speaker 9: Mercedes extra STARp and second, Liam Lawson fifteenth. But yeah,
- 13:12Speaker 9: terrific even on the constructors front. But that's only going
- 13:14Speaker 9: to add to the interest now in the actual overall
- 13:17Speaker 9: drivers championship between.
- 13:19Speaker 7: Those two trying to take it out.
- 13:21Speaker 9: I think it was some debate over over passing on
- 13:24Speaker 9: a on a on the first lap, et cetera, as
- 13:27Speaker 9: the someone sort of given back their advantage. Well, well Norris,
- 13:31Speaker 9: Norris was third past three fourth, so I think it's
- 13:33Speaker 9: only twenty two points between those two at the top
- 13:35Speaker 9: of the standing.
- 13:36Speaker 2: So all to drive for brilliants will see that. We'll
- 13:39Speaker 2: hear ready to come there you go absolutely. It is
- 13:42Speaker 2: twenty three minutes away from five. You're on News Talk
- 13:44Speaker 2: CIVB and coming up next. Something that caught my eye,
- 13:47Speaker 2: the working that really irked me. It's about protests.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Next the Early Edition Full Show podcast on iHeartRadio powered
- 13:55Speaker 1: by News.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Talks B Monday morning on News Talks Abit's twenty six
- 14:00Speaker 2: minutes after five. Freedom is a thing I think we
- 14:03Speaker 2: can all love about living in this country and living
- 14:05Speaker 2: in a country like ours. It's democratic and it's pretty liberal.
- 14:08Speaker 2: We fight, we protest, we argue, we debate, but unlike
- 14:12Speaker 2: most of the rest of the world, we don't get physical.
- 14:16Speaker 2: You know, we don't go out and kill each other
- 14:17Speaker 2: in the name of our beliefs, we express ourselves and
- 14:20Speaker 2: then we try and find a solution. Look around the
- 14:23Speaker 2: world section of the newspaper this morning, from the Middle
- 14:25Speaker 2: East to Africa, to Europe, to Georgia to parts of America,
- 14:29Speaker 2: even your seat places falling apart of the seams, or
- 14:32Speaker 2: freedom being crushed into a one thousand tiny pieces. We
- 14:35Speaker 2: have in this country, for the most part, standards about
- 14:39Speaker 2: how we do things. We have boundaries and that I
- 14:43Speaker 2: think was crossed at the weekend protest is taking it
- 14:47Speaker 2: too far as they did live streaming from outside the
- 14:51Speaker 2: personal home of a member of Parliament, a cabinet minister,
- 14:56Speaker 2: their own personal home, where their partner lives, where their children,
- 15:00Speaker 2: i'm sure, visit grandchildren, where family friends stop buy for
- 15:04Speaker 2: a cup of tea. It's their sanctuary. Everyone who's got
- 15:07Speaker 2: a home knows what that feels like. You know, they're
- 15:10Speaker 2: family photos on the walls, they've got junk mail in
- 15:12Speaker 2: the door. It's someone's home. And some genius thought it
- 15:16Speaker 2: would be a great idea to get a mob outside
- 15:19Speaker 2: a senior minister's home at the weekend, at nighttime and
- 15:22Speaker 2: start yelling. It is not a good idea. It has
- 15:26Speaker 2: never been a good idea and it never will be
- 15:29Speaker 2: they published his address. You might think you appear harmless
- 15:34Speaker 2: with your flags and your balaklavas and you're yelling with
- 15:37Speaker 2: your masks on your faces, but not all people outside
- 15:40Speaker 2: of politics share this view. You can look scary, intimidating
- 15:44Speaker 2: and threatening. So please please carry on protesting. We're all
- 15:49Speaker 2: free to do so, but perhaps next time stop and
- 15:52Speaker 2: think about how your actions might be affecting people around you,
- 15:58Speaker 2: people who aren't in politic or making decisions. And I
- 16:02Speaker 2: think actually today you should take a good hard look
- 16:05Speaker 2: in the mirror, get a pen in a paper and
- 16:09Speaker 2: write a letter to that minister to say sorry. Bryan Bridge,
- 16:13Speaker 2: twenty eight minutes after five newsbooks said, but everyone know
- 16:16Speaker 2: a guy called Bad Bunny. He's apparently performing at the
- 16:19Speaker 2: Super Bowl. I'll play you a bit of music of
- 16:21Speaker 2: his in just a second, But this is what he's
- 16:23Speaker 2: had to say on SNL Live. He was hosting it
- 16:26Speaker 2: at the weekend because Christy Gnome, who's the Homeland Security Secretary.
- 16:30Speaker 2: She says, ICE will be there looking for any illegal immigrants.
- 16:35Speaker 6: You might not know these, but I'm doing the Super
- 16:40Speaker 6: Bowl half done show.
- 16:46Speaker 2: And I'm very happy.
- 16:48Speaker 6: I'm very happy, and I think everyone is happy about it,
- 16:54Speaker 6: even even Fox News that Bunny's.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Favorite musician and he should be the next president. Now
- 17:05Speaker 2: bad Bunny is thirty one years old and he's a
- 17:07Speaker 2: Puerto Rican. As Donald Trump would say, this is a
- 17:10Speaker 2: little bit of what he sounds like. For those unfamiliar
- 17:13Speaker 2: have listened to his music, No Alec.
- 17:23Speaker 5: Jarvis, Alec Dums, Alex Alex.
- 17:26Speaker 2: So it's going to be one of those if you're
- 17:28Speaker 2: a super Bowl fan this year. Twenty nine minutes after
- 17:30Speaker 2: five your Own News Talks The Bet, We'll get to
- 17:32Speaker 2: our reporters around the country, Gavin Gray in the UK
- 17:35Speaker 2: and young people on the benefits changes coming for you.

- 17:59Speaker 12: In one used She's always changing out of work.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Good morning, it is coming up two twenty four minutes
- 18:07Speaker 2: away from six year old News Talks. They'd be will
- 18:09Speaker 2: get to our UK europe correspondent shortly. Lots of protests
- 18:12Speaker 2: in London over the weekend and lots of arrests as
- 18:15Speaker 2: a result, and also the young people here, the teenagers
- 18:18Speaker 2: on the dole getting a bit of a kick up
- 18:19Speaker 2: the jaxi by the government. I love this stash between
- 18:23Speaker 2: China and the UK over their embassies. Everyone likes to
- 18:26Speaker 2: have a flash new embassy these days, and they both
- 18:29Speaker 2: want one in each other's respective countries. So China to
- 18:33Speaker 2: get its Mega ministry built, which, by the way, I
- 18:36Speaker 2: had to look at how much they'd spent on the
- 18:38Speaker 2: land alone. The Chinese had spent two hundred and fifty
- 18:41Speaker 2: five million pounds for the land alone. It's two hundred
- 18:45Speaker 2: and fifteen thousand square feet of land. They can't start
- 18:50Speaker 2: construction on their mega embassy yet for planning reasons. As
- 18:55Speaker 2: you can imagine, it's England. So what they're doing to
- 18:58Speaker 2: try and put the pressure on is turning the taps
- 19:00Speaker 2: off at the British embassy in Beijing. So these guys,
- 19:04Speaker 2: these British diplomats, are sitting there in apparently freezing cold
- 19:07Speaker 2: buildings with no running water some of them, and are
- 19:10Speaker 2: even having to use a squash court as temporary officers.
- 19:15Speaker 2: So there you go, twenty three minutes away from six
- 19:18Speaker 2: Grayan bridge reporters around the country. Colum and Dunedin this morning, Colum,
- 19:21Speaker 2: Good morning morning. Right, are you guys lagging behind on voting?
- 19:26Speaker 10: Yes?
- 19:27Speaker 2: Correct? As of Friday night.
- 19:28Speaker 4: In fact, just fifteen point two percent of eligible voters
- 19:32Speaker 4: here in Dunedin had cast a ballot. So that's the
- 19:36Speaker 4: lowest rate nationwide fifteen point two percent, matched only by
- 19:39Speaker 4: Bay of Plenty Regional Council. And it's a sharp drop
- 19:42Speaker 4: from what was the final voting numbers from twenty twenty two.
- 19:45Speaker 4: Heresn Eden recorded the third highest turnout of any of
- 19:48Speaker 4: the metropolitan centers at more than forty eight percent, so.
- 19:51Speaker 2: A long way to go to match that.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Queenstown Ryan's also trailing behind in the voting the turnout
- 19:57Speaker 4: they're sitting at fifteen point three percent so far. Local
- 20:00Speaker 4: Government New Zealand NOOS says overall national voting numbers are
- 20:04Speaker 4: tracking above the last elections.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Right, but still lower than fifty percent by the end
- 20:09Speaker 2: of it. How's your where there?
- 20:12Speaker 4: Colum starts off fine today late afternoon evening rain northwest
- 20:17Speaker 4: is today the high eighteen cheers.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Thank you Claire in christ Church. Take Claire, You've got
- 20:21Speaker 2: some homelessness news for us this morning.
- 20:23Speaker 13: I do indeeds. Look, this is a story of about
- 20:26Speaker 13: ten or so people who have been living in some
- 20:28Speaker 13: tents and campus and even sheds on the grounds of
- 20:31Speaker 13: Avonside Holy Trinity Church car park that's be forced to
- 20:35Speaker 13: leave over the weekend following several complaints dating back to
- 20:38Speaker 13: last year. Many of the residents, though, have still got
- 20:40Speaker 13: nowhere to go and have ended up camping in the
- 20:43Speaker 13: city's red zone. Community advocates and council candidate Hailey goo
- 20:47Speaker 13: Letter says an abatement order isn't going to solve homelessness,
- 20:51Speaker 13: but rather shifts the problem elsewhere. She says pushing people
- 20:54Speaker 13: into the red zone is simply not a good outcome.
- 20:56Speaker 13: There's a lack of support and infrastructure there. There's also
- 20:59Speaker 13: safety issues. She believes there's scope for some transitional housing
- 21:03Speaker 13: to be put into the red zone, which could be
- 21:06Speaker 13: a longer term solution.
- 21:08Speaker 2: All right, how's your weather?
- 21:10Speaker 13: Mainly finds and cloud increasing the south afternoon strong south
- 21:13Speaker 13: of easterlies, then northeasteries. The high will be sixteen.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Thank you? Clear? Hey Max?
- 21:18Speaker 10: Good morning?
- 21:19Speaker 2: What's the Paeder Jackson up to now?
- 21:21Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 21:22Speaker 14: Story over the weekend. S Peter Jackson, who of course
- 21:24Speaker 14: owns a good deal of property and land on the
- 21:26Speaker 14: Mirrormar Peninsula, forcing the closure of the iconic well perhaps
- 21:30Speaker 14: Chocolate Fish Cafe operating in Shelley Bay for fifteen years.
- 21:34Speaker 14: Owners John and Penny had devastated, but Sir Peter wants
- 21:37Speaker 14: to develop that land into something else. The site is
- 21:40Speaker 14: the old submarine barracks, the officers mess building that certainly
- 21:43Speaker 14: needs a lot of work done before it can be
- 21:45Speaker 14: turned into anything else. And perhaps this might be where
- 21:48Speaker 14: Wellington's White Well this movie museum may be based. There's
- 21:52Speaker 14: a consent for a museum of some sorts new housing,
- 21:56Speaker 14: perhaps to soften the blow. The director also announcing plans
- 21:58Speaker 14: to build a specialist veterinary hospital in Merrima in the
- 22:02Speaker 14: last few days. Certainly looks impressive.
- 22:04Speaker 2: This that hospital.
- 22:05Speaker 14: We know Sir Peter loves animals, even the extinct ones
- 22:08Speaker 14: like them one.
- 22:09Speaker 2: So presumably there'll be a cafe somewhere at this new
- 22:12Speaker 2: complex right there, So you.
- 22:13Speaker 14: Would have to think yeah, But it certainly sounds like
- 22:16Speaker 14: the owners this is it for good for them.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Okay, how's your weather?
- 22:21Speaker 14: Some early drezzil clearing to find this morning, strong winds
- 22:23Speaker 14: sixteen the high central Draymax.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Thank you, I've written Evers in Auckland. Hey, Neva, good morning, jeez.
- 22:28Speaker 2: It's a pretty rough out in the city. Apparently it is.
- 22:31Speaker 12: So we've been having a debate about this in the newsroom.
- 22:34Speaker 12: So what we're talking about here is that a survey's
- 22:35Speaker 12: found ninety one percent of respondents feel Auckland City center
- 22:40Speaker 12: rough sleepers, begging, affecting the business. So part of the
- 22:43Speaker 12: city surveyed one hundred and two business owners. This is
- 22:46Speaker 12: in and around Queen Street. More than seventy percent not
- 22:50Speaker 12: satisfied with the standard of Queen Streets cleanliness. They've highlighted
- 22:54Speaker 12: concerns about the drug dealing and also people defecating in
- 22:58Speaker 12: the street there. What the hell is going on? So
- 23:01Speaker 12: viv Beck is the chief executive, obviously these issues are urgent,
- 23:05Speaker 12: especially too, you know the city rail link opening next year,
- 23:08Speaker 12: We've got the convention Center. My thing was as well,
- 23:11Speaker 12: This is what we were talking about in the newsroom,
- 23:13Speaker 12: is that I haven't been down Queen Street for years,
- 23:16Speaker 12: you know, like I go around the outskirts, you know,
- 23:19Speaker 12: Commercial Bay Viaduct. But this is the issue, you know,
- 23:23Speaker 12: avoid it like the play do you avoid it?
- 23:24Speaker 2: Like the play friend of mine was telling me she
- 23:26Speaker 2: studies like architecture, and there's a course that they do
- 23:30Speaker 2: on sort of homelessness prevention. So they design seats. For example,
- 23:34Speaker 2: they wouldn't design a seat that that was you could
- 23:37Speaker 2: could lie on because of homeless They also designed things
- 23:41Speaker 2: like putting sprinklers in the roof so that at night
- 23:44Speaker 2: time they put the sprinklers on so you wouldn't have
- 23:46Speaker 2: homeless people congregating, making them light enough. This is a
- 23:49Speaker 2: pound of stuff that they're looking at doing now. Of
- 23:52Speaker 2: course that all just moves it down the road, doesn't it.
- 23:54Speaker 12: Yeah, well that design it.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Mustn't solve the problem. But there you go.
- 23:57Speaker 10: They're upset.
- 23:57Speaker 2: They're upset. Sound weather today.
- 24:00Speaker 12: Clearing in the afternoon, eighteen is a high maybe a
- 24:02Speaker 12: good day to walk down Queen Street.
- 24:04Speaker 2: That's not neither, thank you, eighteen minutes away from six
- 24:07Speaker 2: News Talk said b Well. Well, well, Milford has done
- 24:11Speaker 2: it again. This is a clean sweep in twenty twenty five,

- 24:24Speaker 2: plus the Outstanding Value kew Save a Scheme Award and
- 24:28Speaker 2: to really seal the deal, They've also received the Canstar
- 24:31Speaker 2: Most Satisfied custom Award for Kiwi Saver. Let's not forget
- 24:35Speaker 2: the Consumer People's Choice Award, which they've won for eight
- 24:39Speaker 2: straight years. This is a serious track record for Milford.

- 25:07Speaker 2: kebsaba to read the product disclosure statement and make the
- 25:09Speaker 2: switch today. Pray and Bridge Rich lots of texts coming
- 25:13Speaker 2: in on Auckland CBD. Ryan just listening to the talk
- 25:17Speaker 2: and reading an article on safety around the city. This
- 25:19Speaker 2: is from heart of the city. Had to go to
- 25:21Speaker 2: Auckland Hospital on Friday for a scam. It's exactly the
- 25:25Speaker 2: same around the park. This is around Grafton on the
- 25:28Speaker 2: roads leading up to the hospital. I know what you're
- 25:30Speaker 2: talking about. We were harassed by beggars for money on
- 25:33Speaker 2: the walk from the car park, along the way even
- 25:37Speaker 2: around the entry to the hospital. And if you ignore
- 25:40Speaker 2: them they say things like if you beat, beat beep,
- 25:44Speaker 2: I won't repeat. Do they have no shame praying on
- 25:47Speaker 2: the sick. It's just appalling. Just need to be banned.
- 25:50Speaker 2: It's ruining the city says Craig. We'll talk about that shortly.
- 25:54Speaker 2: It's now fourteen away from.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Six international correspondence with ends and insurance, peace of mind
- 26:01Speaker 1: for New Zealand business.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Kevin Gray with us give another week in another huge protest,
- 26:07Speaker 2: another fewerists.
- 26:09Speaker 15: Indeed, right. So these are again almost five hundred people
- 26:13Speaker 15: now who have been arrested in London for supporting Palestine Action.
- 26:18Speaker 15: It is a prescribed terrorist group and supporting a terrorist
- 26:21Speaker 15: group like this can make you end up in prison.
- 26:25Speaker 15: The reason this has been different this weekend and garnered
- 26:28Speaker 15: headlines is because so many senior politicians and indeed police
- 26:32Speaker 15: officers had said please do not protest this weekend in
- 26:36Speaker 15: support of Palestine. Because of the sensitivity around the UK
- 26:41Speaker 15: following the attack on the synagogue, in Manchester at the
- 26:44Speaker 15: end of last week, in which two were killed and
- 26:48Speaker 15: the assailant, of course, was gone down by police as
- 26:51Speaker 15: the man attempted to crash into with a car and
- 26:55Speaker 15: then stab those attending a synagogue on the most holy
- 26:58Speaker 15: day in the Jewish calendar. However, the protesters took no notice.
- 27:02Speaker 15: They were out in force. More than a thousand of
- 27:04Speaker 15: them sat silently and around the center of London. The
- 27:09Speaker 15: police have arrested four hundred and ninety two. I think
- 27:12Speaker 15: that figure is going to rise, and many police saying, look,
- 27:15Speaker 15: we just can't do everything. We cannot give the synagogues
- 27:18Speaker 15: more security and also have to constantly arrest all these
- 27:23Speaker 15: people in London. So it looks like the government's changing
- 27:26Speaker 15: legislation to allow officers to take into account the cumulative
- 27:30Speaker 15: effect of protest after protest after protests, and may even
- 27:35Speaker 15: be able to order those protests to say no, you
- 27:37Speaker 15: can't come to London, You've got to go elsewhere to
- 27:39Speaker 15: make your voice hurt.
- 27:40Speaker 2: In terms of the Tierra Tech itself, are we likely
- 27:43Speaker 2: to see any protests against the Muslim Are you saying
- 27:46Speaker 2: against the Muslim community there?
- 27:48Speaker 3: Well?
- 27:48Speaker 15: There was as well another protest which is a counter
- 27:52Speaker 15: protest to the one that I've just talked about, So
- 27:55Speaker 15: there is that aspect of it. In the meantime, three
- 27:57Speaker 15: remain in hospital following that attack. We now know of
- 28:01Speaker 15: the identities of the two that died, and indeed the
- 28:04Speaker 15: assailant himself and police counter terrorism Police granted warrants giving
- 28:10Speaker 15: extra time to question four people arrested on suspicion of
- 28:13Speaker 15: preparing terrorist ACKs following that attack on Thursday.
- 28:17Speaker 2: All right, Kevin Gray are UK europe correspondent, appreciate your time.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Eleven minutes away from six Ryan, Government's tracking down on
- 28:23Speaker 2: youth beneficiaries. It's brought forth changes that mean from next
- 28:27Speaker 2: November eighteen to nineteen year olds won't get the dole
- 28:30Speaker 2: if their parents earn more than sixty five thousand dollars.
- 28:34Speaker 2: There's also a new one thousand dollar bonus if they
- 28:37Speaker 2: stay off the benefit for a year through the Community
- 28:40Speaker 2: Job Service. Fellow Riley, former welfare expert at Welfare Advisory
- 28:43Speaker 2: Expert Group member, joins me. Now, Hi, Phil, morning, Ryan.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Why do you think they've brought it forward.
- 28:50Speaker 10: Or probably to demonstrate to the electorate coming into a
- 28:53Speaker 10: title election that they're under control on this. I suspect
- 28:56Speaker 10: also the budgetary situation is driving them of it, and
- 29:01Speaker 10: I think they want to demonstrate action, so fair enough,
- 29:03Speaker 10: that's politics.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Bo does it work.
- 29:07Speaker 10: I think the carrot and stick approach is a good idea,
- 29:09Speaker 10: and certainly I think the public will support the idea
- 29:12Speaker 10: that if you're sitting with your parents and they're earning
- 29:14Speaker 10: some money, you shouldn't be you shouldn't be taking money
- 29:16Speaker 10: from the state. You should primarily focus on that parental support.
- 29:21Speaker 10: And I think that's probably sensible and hopefully it will
- 29:24Speaker 10: lead to more young people getting a job. The carrot
- 29:27Speaker 10: at the end of it, the thousand bucks are for
- 29:29Speaker 10: a year that was announced yesterday. Once again, I think
- 29:32Speaker 10: in principle that's a good idea, although I suspect the
- 29:34Speaker 10: scheme design may not actually be quite as helpful as
- 29:37Speaker 10: it otherwise might be. The international evidence around this is
- 29:40Speaker 10: that if you've been in a job for about six months,
- 29:42Speaker 10: you tend to be sticky in that job. That's the
- 29:44Speaker 10: international evidence. So you probably would have structured a payment
- 29:47Speaker 10: if I was the minister at about six months rather
- 29:50Speaker 10: than twelve, because just put yourself in the feet of
- 29:53Speaker 10: that young person, A year is a long time that
- 29:55Speaker 10: the young person's life. Well, though clearly a thousand bucks
- 29:57Speaker 10: is are fair, but a money for a young person
- 29:59Speaker 10: as well. The question is whether it will actually work that,
- 30:02Speaker 10: whether the year is just too long so that quite
- 30:05Speaker 10: big character play out. Maybe six months would have been better,
- 30:07Speaker 10: But you know that's just a scheme design issue, and
- 30:09Speaker 10: we'll see how it practically works out.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Currently, fifteen thy eighteen to nineteen year olds on the
- 30:14Speaker 2: doll do we know how many of them have parents
- 30:17Speaker 2: earning less than sixty five thousand dollars a year. I
- 30:19Speaker 2: guess it's the question.
- 30:21Speaker 10: Well, it'll just be probably affection a function of the
- 30:26Speaker 10: population if you like. But bear in mind those people
- 30:28Speaker 10: on sixty five grand or that lower end of the
- 30:32Speaker 10: spectrum will often tend to be on government support themselves.
- 30:35Speaker 10: They might be on a family benefit, they might be
- 30:37Speaker 10: on some sort of hardship allowance already, so that there
- 30:40Speaker 10: will be a complex interplayer that will let that lower
- 30:42Speaker 10: end of how much government support both the parents will
- 30:45Speaker 10: get or the sole parent potentially and the young person
- 30:49Speaker 10: will get. So you know, that's all would be played out.
- 30:51Speaker 2: I think we'll appreciate your time this one. We've got
- 30:53Speaker 2: I rany form a Welfare Expert Advisor Group member time
- 30:56Speaker 2: is nine to six new stalks.
- 30:58Speaker 1: They'd be the word on the News of the day
- 31:01Speaker 1: Early edition with Ryan Bridge and r V SuperStor explore
- 31:06Speaker 1: r v's accessories and servicing all in one news Talks
- 31:09Speaker 1: at be just.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Gone six minutes away from six. Megan Markle made a
- 31:13Speaker 2: surprise appearance at the Paris Fashion Week over the weekend.
- 31:16Speaker 2: I don't know if you saw this, wearing a white
- 31:18Speaker 2: bed sheet that was wrapped several times around her and
- 31:22Speaker 2: went to a Balenciaga show. There you go, Fantastic news
- 31:25Speaker 2: net Yahoo. I think we mentioned him earlier in the show.
- 31:28Speaker 2: But he says should be in the next day or two,
- 31:31Speaker 2: not that the hostages will be released, but that he
- 31:34Speaker 2: might be able to announce something to do with the hostages.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Her Mass, for its part, will be disarmed in Gaza
- 31:42Speaker 2: and they'll be demilitarized. This is according to Netanyahu and Trump. However,
- 31:47Speaker 2: her Mass is so far agreed to the hostage thing,
- 31:50Speaker 2: but they have made no mention of the disarmament, no
- 31:53Speaker 2: mention of negotiations on the other points. So still clearly
- 31:57Speaker 2: some water to go under the bridge there. Mike in
- 32:01Speaker 2: the studio now for your Monday morning. Good morning, my
- 32:03Speaker 2: greeting's Ryan. Been to the city, lady to the CBD.
- 32:05Speaker 11: I don't go to the city. I've said that many
- 32:07Speaker 11: many times. I go in every third Thursday to the
- 32:10Speaker 11: edge of the city for a haircut. But it's not downtown.
- 32:12Speaker 11: It's not a green, dark downtown. It's not mean dark downtown.
- 32:16Speaker 2: I thought it had gotten a bit better. You know,
- 32:17Speaker 2: we have told you that. Mitchell told us that has
- 32:21Speaker 2: drops on the beat and sort of at five percent
- 32:23Speaker 2: increase and profile that sort of thing, but clearly it
- 32:27Speaker 2: hasn't done it.
- 32:27Speaker 6: Well.
- 32:28Speaker 11: No, you're talking about a mood though, And so if
- 32:30Speaker 11: I go to you and go, how does it feel?
- 32:32Speaker 11: So cops will give your stats.
- 32:33Speaker 2: They'll say we.
- 32:34Speaker 11: Gave you X number of arrests and there are why
- 32:36Speaker 11: number of people sleeping rough But if you go to
- 32:39Speaker 11: a local retailer and go does it feel good? Then
- 32:42Speaker 11: that's a completely different vibe, isn't it. I mean they
- 32:44Speaker 11: got a major turnaround.
- 32:45Speaker 10: Hey.
- 32:45Speaker 11: By the way, have you ever had employment troubles? Have
- 32:47Speaker 11: you ever been in some sort of employment issue with
- 32:49Speaker 11: your employers and they don't like you or you don't
- 32:52Speaker 11: like them, or you're leaving or whatever.
- 32:54Speaker 2: I've always thought if I wasn't wanted somewhere, I wouldn't
- 32:57Speaker 2: want to be there.
- 32:58Speaker 11: Very good attitude. So how many meetings? So I'm thinking
- 33:01Speaker 11: about knowles, Oh yeah, how many meetings do you need
- 33:07Speaker 11: to have? And for how long do those meetings need
- 33:10Speaker 11: to go before somebody somewhere goes?
- 33:12Speaker 2: You know what this is?
- 33:13Speaker 11: Clearly isn't working a past or or well given to
- 33:17Speaker 11: whatever it is you're asking or we need you to
- 33:19Speaker 11: do exos it.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Obviously there's a key small group of key players who
- 33:23Speaker 2: are just not budget.
- 33:25Speaker 11: So that's that's the point. What I'm saying is so
- 33:27Speaker 11: you know what the problem is.
- 33:28Speaker 2: So that's that.
- 33:29Speaker 11: So as a leader, as a person who's running something,
- 33:31Speaker 11: you know what the problem is. You know that there's
- 33:33Speaker 11: your problem and there's your coach. So what are you
- 33:36Speaker 11: going to do about it? You're going to be a
