- 1:20Speaker 1: dot Look, there are eight episodes dropping into the Girls

- 1:29Speaker 1: throw us a boon, so and those are all free.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Now it's gonna start pairing Wade. Yeah, it's been a
- 1:36Speaker 1: fire hose, probably more than people are interested in, quite frankly,
- 1:39Speaker 1: but we're going to get back to basics soon here,
- 1:42Speaker 1: h Do you want to talk providence and give us
- 1:45Speaker 1: a synopsis? I do now deeply entrenched in Paris high society,
- 1:51Speaker 1: Edmund metals in the lives of those he wishes to destroy,
- 1:55Speaker 1: But the stakes change when poison is stolen from his
- 1:58Speaker 1: lab and is used in a murder. Meanwhile, and Men
- 2:01Speaker 1: struggles to conceal his identity from Mercedes struggles. Man doesn't
- 2:06Speaker 1: even try. I really like the way you like settled
- 2:08Speaker 1: into that mysterious tone at the beginning of this enough,
- 2:11Speaker 1: I don't know why. I don't know why. For a
- 2:14Speaker 1: full list of the cast and crew of Katamonia Christo,
- 2:18Speaker 1: you can find that in our show notes on Girls
- 2:20Speaker 1: Gone Hallmark dot Com. It's linked directly in the show
- 2:23Speaker 1: notes on whatever app you're listening to this episode on.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Well do you have a first impression for this episode?
- 2:30Speaker 1: I do crying. I didn't work how I wanted to work,
- 2:36Speaker 1: So my first impression is one of this episode ended.
- 2:39Speaker 1: All I could think of was that meme screaming, crying,
- 2:43Speaker 1: throwing up. Yeah. My first impression is I'm officially freaked out. Now. Yeah,
- 2:48Speaker 1: it was good, such a good episode. I don't want
- 2:53Speaker 1: this show to end. And it's going to end. And yes,
- 2:57Speaker 1: there will not be a season two. Yeah, such a bummer.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And I really I'm like, Okay, do I really want
- 3:02Speaker 1: to read the book? Yeah, but I know my limits. Well,
- 3:06Speaker 1: you don't need to read it right now. We're in
- 3:08Speaker 1: a very busy season. The book will still be there.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Hold up, I'm going to look on audible. Of course
- 3:13Speaker 1: it's on audible, I know, but I would love to
- 3:16Speaker 1: know who the authors. I'm sure there's the narrator. Is
- 3:20Speaker 1: that's it? That's what I meant. Yeah, someone big. Wouldn't
- 3:23Speaker 1: that be awesome? Oh my gosh. You know, you know,
- 3:27Speaker 1: I listened to a lot of books. I want you
- 3:29Speaker 1: to guess how many hours? Twenty seven fifty two? Whoa,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I told you it was long, fifty two hours. Thought
- 3:39Speaker 1: that's a long book. Wow. So uh yeah, there's a
- 3:44Speaker 1: bunch of versions with different narrators. If you have listened
- 3:48Speaker 1: to the audiobook and you have a favorite narrator. Let
- 3:50Speaker 1: us know what the good version is. Yeah, I would
- 3:53Speaker 1: love it. I would love it. Okay, do you want
- 3:55Speaker 1: to talk about what we liked about this episode? Yeah?
- 3:58Speaker 1: I think my favorite thing about this episode is the
- 4:01Speaker 1: dance that Mercedes and Edmund are doing around each other. Yes,
- 4:05Speaker 1: we open on the country estate and she can't even
- 4:08Speaker 1: look at him while they're having a conversation. She's standing
- 4:11Speaker 1: behind fernand and there's this little bit of Fernanz like
- 4:15Speaker 1: you left, so really we didn't even get to talk.
- 4:17Speaker 1: And he's like, oh, I heard they'd be dancing. He's like,
- 4:19Speaker 1: kind of he's kind of awkward. Have you noticed that
- 4:22Speaker 1: Edmund's like a little bit awkward when he tries to
- 4:25Speaker 1: be funny. Oh no, I didn't really notice that. I
- 4:29Speaker 1: enjoy his kind of narky responses. Sure, yeah, me too.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And Mercedes is like, it's not mandatory to dance at
- 4:36Speaker 1: a ball and then he says, well did you and
- 4:39Speaker 1: she says no, and for NaN's like, well I asked
- 4:41Speaker 1: you for Nana. I hate for Fernande. I hate all
- 4:44Speaker 1: of these men. I hate all of these men. But
- 4:47Speaker 1: then we close with her returning his gift of the earrings.
- 4:52Speaker 1: He clocks the bruised cheek, He touches her face. He
- 4:56Speaker 1: calls her Mercedes. Oh that's all that's all she needed
- 4:59Speaker 1: for confirmation, right, you think, lashes the pocket watch that
- 5:02Speaker 1: she gave him, and then he walks away. They both
- 5:07Speaker 1: break down. I'm curious what you think Edmund feels for
- 5:13Speaker 1: Mercedes after this exchange. Oh? Yeah, he's in love with
- 5:17Speaker 1: her still, like she is not the target of his revenge.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I think, okay, that's interesting because Haiti comes to him
- 5:24Speaker 1: in the episode and she's like, if you ruin Fernand,
- 5:27Speaker 1: it's going to ruin Mercedes and Albert by association. And
- 5:31Speaker 1: he's basically like they profited from his evil doing, Like
- 5:34Speaker 1: that's the cost of doing business. My feeling when Edmund
- 5:38Speaker 1: walks away is that he's heartbroken and still in love
- 5:41Speaker 1: with her, but perhaps unwilling to give her another chance.
- 5:46Speaker 1: To me, he's willing to confirm her suspicions. He wants
- 5:49Speaker 1: her to know who he is. Sure, But he goes
- 5:52Speaker 1: on to say in that exchange, not only does he
- 5:55Speaker 1: call her Mercedes, but she says, have you ever been
- 5:58Speaker 1: in love? And he says one? Since she says what happened?
- 6:01Speaker 1: And he said, I went away for a very long time,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and she believed I was dead. I mean, if she
- 6:04Speaker 1: didn't know, she knows. But he goes on to say
- 6:08Speaker 1: that I'm a different man and she's a different woman.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And to me, that feels like he's closing the door.
- 6:14Speaker 1: The feelings are still there, but he's not going to
- 6:17Speaker 1: allow anything else. Perhaps everything in me right now is
- 6:23Speaker 1: restraining myself from googling what happens at the end. I
- 6:28Speaker 1: kind of was like so wrapped up after that end scene.
- 6:33Speaker 1: At the beginning of this review, when we first started
- 6:37Speaker 1: reviewing this series, I was like, I don't care about
- 6:39Speaker 1: like Mercedes and Edmund, Like I don't care. They weren't
- 6:42Speaker 1: together long enough, Like this is not a love story.
- 6:44Speaker 1: This is about revenge, right, And I'm like, I don't care.
- 6:46Speaker 1: But it was this episode in that scene, I was like, Oh,
- 6:49Speaker 1: I care about them reuniting. They are the one true
- 6:54Speaker 1: love for each other. I don't think he's going to
- 6:57Speaker 1: harm her, but he might and harm I mean not
- 7:01Speaker 1: like physically harm, but like as a result of hurting
- 7:06Speaker 1: Fernande and et cetera, et cetera. But I don't know.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I guess we'll just have to wait and see how
- 7:12Speaker 1: do you feel do you want them to be together?
- 7:15Speaker 1: Do you want her just to go away happy ending? So? Sure,
- 7:19Speaker 1: But I do not think that's the direction we're going.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I think that would go against everything he's told us
- 7:26Speaker 1: about himself at this point, and I think she moved
- 7:30Speaker 1: on very quickly. Okay, what was the catalyst for us
- 7:33Speaker 1: watching this show? They talked about the Count of Monte
- 7:36Speaker 1: Cristo in a movie, in that Hallmark movie, which was
- 7:39Speaker 1: a love story. Do we think that the love story
- 7:44Speaker 1: between Edmund and Mercedes like played in like if it
- 7:48Speaker 1: ended in tragedy, it wouldn't be reference in this Hallmark movie.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I don't think. Maybe I don't know. I don't know.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I'm dying. If people are familiar with this story and
- 8:00Speaker 1: they're like, I just don't think we're gonna get a
- 8:02Speaker 1: happily ever after. I don't think that's the way this
- 8:04Speaker 1: story ends. I can't or not in this way. I
- 8:08Speaker 1: really look, as much as I would love my Hallmark
- 8:11Speaker 1: watching Heart is like, yes, she's your one true love,
- 8:14Speaker 1: find your way back to her, forgive her because fernand
- 8:18Speaker 1: sins are not her own. But you don't think it.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I don't think that's what we're gonna get got it,
- 8:23Speaker 1: but I don't know. We have two episodes to go.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I don't know. God, that scene was so good, be
- 8:29Speaker 1: really good. I just the two actors I thought were
- 8:32Speaker 1: so incredible together, so incredible together, And the entire time
- 8:37Speaker 1: I'm watching the actress who plays Mercedes, her name is
- 8:41Speaker 1: Anna Giridou, I'm like, who does she look like? She
- 8:44Speaker 1: has a very strong face. I think she might look
- 8:49Speaker 1: like help me out here, redhead actress. She was in
- 8:53Speaker 1: Molly's Game. Do you know who I'm talking about? The
- 8:56Speaker 1: only redhead acress? I can think it is Julianne Moore.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And that's not who she looks like Chestin Oh. They
- 9:02Speaker 1: have that chin, dimples very similar. They just have like
- 9:05Speaker 1: that strong face. She looks just like her. And finally,
- 9:10Speaker 1: while I was watching this, I was like, oh, that's
- 9:12Speaker 1: who she looks like. Anyway, I think she's stunning and
- 9:15Speaker 1: I just thought they were so incredible in the scene together.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I gotta give you your flowers. Meghan. Oh, my notes
- 9:21Speaker 1: say I knew it. My notes say Meghan clocked it.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Props to Meghan for calling out in last week's episode
- 9:31Speaker 1: the Eugenia and Louise. Is that her name yeah, romance. Okay,
- 9:39Speaker 1: First of all, let me just talk about this scene
- 9:41Speaker 1: for a second. Danglars. Okay, him and his wife are
- 9:45Speaker 1: the everyone in garbage trash bag humans, right, they're are
- 9:50Speaker 1: you thinking the same thing? I'm thinking they want to
- 9:52Speaker 1: set their daughter up with this man who's twice her
- 9:56Speaker 1: age and only because he has money whatever. But the
- 10:00Speaker 1: scene when he like walks in on them, I was
- 10:05Speaker 1: a little bit surprised for PBS. First of all, we
- 10:07Speaker 1: got like this woman on woman kiss. Yeah, but keep
- 10:12Speaker 1: in mind, this wasn't a series made by PBS. It
- 10:14Speaker 1: was acquired by PDAs. You're right, Okay, I still was
- 10:17Speaker 1: a little bit surprised. I was also there's a same
- 10:20Speaker 1: sex romance in Down to Nebby. Oh really, oh wow? Okay.
- 10:24Speaker 1: I was really surprised at the reaction of the Count,
- 10:29Speaker 1: the Count of Spota, where he was like, oh, don't
- 10:34Speaker 1: let me interrupt. I was like you, and he just
- 10:37Speaker 1: let myself in, like, don't stop on my account, I'm
- 10:40Speaker 1: just gonna watch. I know it's kind of gross, but funny,
- 10:45Speaker 1: so funny, yes, And I was like okay, okay, all right, okay,
- 10:49Speaker 1: all right, but props to you for calling it out.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Last week, thank you, thank you. Look, we talked about
- 10:56Speaker 1: terrible people. Eloise, the wife of Villefort, is revealed to
- 11:00Speaker 1: be just as terrible as her husband. I hadn't clocked
- 11:04Speaker 1: that earlier. When she steals the potion, I thought, well,
- 11:08Speaker 1: she's stealing more medication for her son. I thought so too,
- 11:11Speaker 1: And then it turns out she's murdering her stepdaughter's grandmother
- 11:16Speaker 1: for what financial gain or the money? Yeah, I'm like,
- 11:19Speaker 1: do you guys not have any money? I don't understand this,
- 11:22Speaker 1: but huh, you're the worst, and you're just so willing
- 11:25Speaker 1: to send this young innocent woman off to prison. By
- 11:29Speaker 1: all accounts, she's a lovely human. She takes care of
- 11:31Speaker 1: her grandfather, she's kind to her half brother. The worst
- 11:35Speaker 1: thing she's done is fall in love with someone who
- 11:37Speaker 1: doesn't meet her father's standards. And she's still willing to
- 11:41Speaker 1: go through with this loveless marriage because it would mean
- 11:45Speaker 1: that she would be able to stay. Right now, they're
- 11:48Speaker 1: going to take her to prison. I know I did
- 11:50Speaker 1: love Villefort. The end, like he doesn't believe it. When
- 11:53Speaker 1: he's going through where roles, he knows his wife did it.
- 11:58Speaker 1: So he's digging through Valentine's drawers trying to find proof. Yeah,
- 12:04Speaker 1: I don't know. I wonder. I was like, is Villefort's
- 12:08Speaker 1: what's his job at this point in this series. I
- 12:12Speaker 1: don't know if he's like still like a district attorney.
- 12:15Speaker 1: I think he's in that world. But the thing is,
- 12:18Speaker 1: it's so like Edmund didn't have to do anything in
- 12:22Speaker 1: this case, and he gets the exact revenge. Like now
- 12:27Speaker 1: Villefort's daughter is being falsely imprisoned, just like Edmund was.
- 12:32Speaker 1: This is my problem with this story, though, is that
- 12:36Speaker 1: Edmund his moves are having trickle effect on people who
- 12:40Speaker 1: don't deserve it. Right, So sweet Valentine is does not
- 12:46Speaker 1: deserve to go to prison like Edmund didn't deserve to
- 12:49Speaker 1: go to prison. But I have a hard time I
- 12:53Speaker 1: want to see Villefort suffer. He should be the one
- 12:58Speaker 1: going to prison. He might be suffering because his daughter's
- 13:01Speaker 1: going to prison, but yeah, heary. I hate seeing an
- 13:05Speaker 1: innocent person be the at the hand, be the fun. Yes, yes,
- 13:12Speaker 1: is Villefort an idiot? Why do you ask? He learns
- 13:16Speaker 1: that Cadarousse is investinging three people, yes, Villefort, Danglars, and Fernande.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And I think if you were Don Glars or Fernande
- 13:26Speaker 1: hearing this information that it was catarious because they knew Cadarousse. Right,
- 13:31Speaker 1: it seems like Villefort should have two. But might they
- 13:34Speaker 1: flash back to oh he knew, would they start to
- 13:37Speaker 1: put the pieces together? They haven't. Like Dongglars is just
- 13:41Speaker 1: the dumbest idiot on the block. I mean, he just
- 13:43Speaker 1: plays right into Edmund's hand every time he's anything for
- 13:47Speaker 1: financial gain, He'll do anything. He's just blinded by that, right,
- 13:51Speaker 1: and he hasn't opened his eyes and realize what is
- 13:55Speaker 1: Sometimes things are too good to be true. Anne, Yeah,
- 13:58Speaker 1: I think you're right. I think if fernand or Danglars
- 14:02Speaker 1: got the information about Cadarousse, that they would be suspicious.
- 14:06Speaker 1: They would start putting the puzzle pieces together. Maybe Villefort
- 14:10Speaker 1: did not know who Cadarousse was, but I would be
- 14:12Speaker 1: under the assumption that they were in the small town
- 14:15Speaker 1: and he was like the owner of that bar or
- 14:19Speaker 1: cafe or whatever it was, that he would know who
- 14:22Speaker 1: Caderousse was. He would know the name. Yes, absolutely, I
- 14:26Speaker 1: thought so. So Maybe maybe Villefort, maybe what we're just
- 14:30Speaker 1: not seeing is like him processing that information yet maybe
- 14:33Speaker 1: like at some point he's going to do something with it.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Or it's going to dawn on him. The connection. Oh,
- 14:40Speaker 1: he invited the three of us to dinner hello, no kidding, Yeah,
- 14:45Speaker 1: the dinner from Hell where he walked you through the
- 14:49Speaker 1: room where you killed a baby, right, and he has
- 14:53Speaker 1: this like chilling conversation with you about providence and oh
- 14:57Speaker 1: my goodness. Right, what'd you think about the scene where
- 15:03Speaker 1: Valentine's grandfather I think his name is Noirtier. Uh huh.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I don't understand fully what happened. I was like, who
- 15:11Speaker 1: are these people? I know who the grandfather is, but
- 15:14Speaker 1: he dictates this story because earlier in the episode, Edmund
- 15:17Speaker 1: goes to him. Yeah, that's a talk with him. Again.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I don't know how Edmund is getting this information. How
- 15:24Speaker 1: does how does he know? How does he know? Well?
- 15:29Speaker 1: Does he know? We got We got a little bit
- 15:31Speaker 1: of it. This isn't my wishes, but we got a
- 15:33Speaker 1: little bit of it. Yakapo goes to Cadarousse and Caterous
- 15:37Speaker 1: is like, there's something going on with Franz, like his
- 15:39Speaker 1: family is tied. There's some connection here that I think
- 15:42Speaker 1: we can use. I need to do some research. When
- 15:44Speaker 1: you pause you there, I was like, who the f is?
- 15:46Speaker 1: Franz in this episode. I had to google. I was like,
- 15:49Speaker 1: I don't remember him from a previous episode. How is
- 15:52Speaker 1: he playing into this family so on and so forth. Yeah,
- 15:55Speaker 1: he's been there, yes, but yes, there's a lot of characters.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Then we don't ever see Caderts doing any of that
- 16:02Speaker 1: research because Jacho's like, make it quick. We just have
- 16:04Speaker 1: to assume that he does. Then Edmund takes this information
- 16:07Speaker 1: to Noirtier. What we don't see. Then we see Noirtier's handler,
- 16:12Speaker 1: nurse Butler. I'm not sure who that man is to him,
- 16:15Speaker 1: mm hmmm, come and say, hey, he dictated this to me.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Noirtier doesn't speak right, So I said the same thing.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I was like, how did he dig that that count
- 16:28Speaker 1: blackmail this other guy or pay off this other guy
- 16:31Speaker 1: to get him to say that Noirtier dictated this story
- 16:34Speaker 1: to me. Maybe maybe I hadn't thought about that. Seed.
- 16:39Speaker 1: This is where the book would explain these things a
- 16:41Speaker 1: little bit more in detail, don't you think? So? Yeah?
- 16:45Speaker 1: Sometimes I think am I the dumbest dummy on the
- 16:47Speaker 1: planet for questioning these things? That's what I have to
- 16:50Speaker 1: assume happened. I don't assume that Noirtier suddenly regained the
- 16:54Speaker 1: power of speech to tell this incredibly eloquent story. Oh
- 16:57Speaker 1: I don't think so either to this man. And I
- 17:00Speaker 1: find it odd that none of them question it. Yes,
- 17:05Speaker 1: they're not like Grandpapa does not speak. Yeah, even Valentine's like,
- 17:09Speaker 1: oh he you know, blinks his eyes or whatever. So
- 17:11Speaker 1: I don't When he said like he dictated this to me,
- 17:14Speaker 1: I was like looking around, like, why is nobody questioning
- 17:19Speaker 1: the needed it? How? Yeah? Yeah, the Ouiji board, Yeah,
- 17:24Speaker 1: I thought it was interesting. I thought it was interesting.
- 17:27Speaker 1: That's one of the parts of the story where I
- 17:29Speaker 1: was like, I need way more context here, and I
- 17:32Speaker 1: just don't think like the series can. No, there's just
- 17:34Speaker 1: not enough time. Yeah, and I think it might get
- 17:36Speaker 1: boring too, But so something I thought was really interesting.
- 17:42Speaker 1: The Count is straight up scary in this episode. I
- 17:45Speaker 1: find him to be terrifying really, but he's also straight
- 17:50Speaker 1: up scared. One of the housemaids comes to him and
- 17:53Speaker 1: she's like, we're worried about you. We hear you walking
- 17:56Speaker 1: around at night drags. Well, I'm thinking, like he's up
- 18:00Speaker 1: all night plotting. Then we can see that scene later
- 18:03Speaker 1: where Yacobo's done his rounds and he says outside secure
- 18:06Speaker 1: and the Count is just sitting at that table, and
- 18:09Speaker 1: like the slightest little noise makes him jump so that
- 18:11Speaker 1: he pulls a gun on Haiti. Oh my god, I
- 18:13Speaker 1: don't think I even really realized any of that. Okay,
- 18:16Speaker 1: go ahead. I think he's I think he's terrified. And
- 18:20Speaker 1: it was this that made me think, I understand your
- 18:22Speaker 1: need for revenge. But you've got all these connections. Wouldn't
- 18:26Speaker 1: it just be easier to send these men to their
- 18:28Speaker 1: deaths and then you wouldn't have to worry about Not
- 18:31Speaker 1: that I'm for a man who is all in on
- 18:34Speaker 1: ruining the lives of these men and not terribly concerned
- 18:37Speaker 1: about working within the constraints of the law. I'm not
- 18:40Speaker 1: suggesting he murders them, but yeah, I am suggesting that
- 18:43Speaker 1: if this is what you were working with, it might
- 18:45Speaker 1: make your life a little bit easier. Yeah, just be
- 18:47Speaker 1: done with it, Be done. Yeah, sleep at night for real.
- 18:51Speaker 1: One last thing I really liked, and then I have
- 18:53Speaker 1: a feeling we can move on to wishes. When the
- 18:56Speaker 1: Count of Spota comes and he's retelling the treasure store,
- 19:00Speaker 1: I thought it was kind of genius how they did it,
- 19:02Speaker 1: where they flashed back to Edmund talking with Abby and
- 19:06Speaker 1: Abby's telling the story. I just really loved it. I
- 19:10Speaker 1: loved it. And then those clips of Edmund finding the treasure. Yes, yeah,
- 19:14Speaker 1: let's take a quick break and we'll come right back
- 19:16Speaker 1: to talk about our wishes. What did you wish for
- 19:27Speaker 1: while watching this episode? You know, we touched on a
- 19:30Speaker 1: lot of it already, But my biggest wish for I'm
- 19:34Speaker 1: worried for Edmund. I think he's flying too close to
- 19:36Speaker 1: the sun. His plan is messy. Sure, it's messy, and
- 19:42Speaker 1: I feel someone who me as someone who likes to
- 19:45Speaker 1: be in control. I was like, there's all these like
- 19:48Speaker 1: loose threads now that are happening right and people are
- 19:51Speaker 1: being affected, and like it's going to be out of
- 19:54Speaker 1: his control at some point. Where he's been playing chess
- 19:57Speaker 1: this whole time and making all the moves ahead of
- 19:59Speaker 1: everybody the else, but now it's like spiraling and I'm
- 20:03Speaker 1: worried about him. I'm worried about him, and I think
- 20:06Speaker 1: it goes back to what you just talked about. Just
- 20:09Speaker 1: be done with it, dude, Just get rid of the
- 20:12Speaker 1: three dudes. Yeah, I'm very curious to see what the
- 20:14Speaker 1: endgame is with them and his endgame I'm especially worried
- 20:18Speaker 1: with Cadarousse kind of being exposed. Not exposed, but the
- 20:24Speaker 1: investigator guys are dialed in on what's happening now. That
- 20:29Speaker 1: worries me. All of it starts. It's very chaotic, and
- 20:32Speaker 1: I think Caterouse is disposable to dmen. Oh, I agree,
- 20:36Speaker 1: and that I don't like that. I have a soft
- 20:38Speaker 1: spot for Cadarousse, so do I. I don't think he
- 20:41Speaker 1: did the worst thing ever, No, no, I don't. I
- 20:45Speaker 1: don't either. He was complicit, but certainly not in the
- 20:49Speaker 1: way these other men were. We talked about it a
- 20:50Speaker 1: little bit, but I think some of the backstory gets
- 20:53Speaker 1: lost in the telling. For example, Vampa comes in in
- 20:58Speaker 1: the role of Count Spata, and I didn't fully remember
- 21:03Speaker 1: the role of Vampa, and I don't think it's that
- 21:08Speaker 1: deeply explored why he owes his allegiance to the count.
- 21:11Speaker 1: I know he saves one of his associates from a
- 21:13Speaker 1: hanging and h but I just think there's all these
- 21:16Speaker 1: little details that happened, and they happen in the past,
- 21:18Speaker 1: and it's easy to forget why this man would go
- 21:23Speaker 1: to all this trouble and come here and play this
- 21:25Speaker 1: part and we don't really need to know the why
- 21:30Speaker 1: to understand what's happening here. We only need to know
- 21:33Speaker 1: the effect of his actions. But I like details. Yeah,
- 21:36Speaker 1: and I think we talked about this earlier. The book
- 21:38Speaker 1: probably would flash a lot more of this out in
- 21:42Speaker 1: a way that isn't always interesting to watch on screen
- 21:44Speaker 1: that don't want to be like, oh, remember he did this,
- 21:46Speaker 1: this and this and this it. Yeah, sometimes you just
- 21:49Speaker 1: have to this dude's here and he's gonna work for me,
- 21:53Speaker 1: right right right, Maybe simplify it a little bit, yeah,
- 21:59Speaker 1: I mean, I think there are people who are listening
- 22:00Speaker 1: who are like, sometimes you just have to accept what's
- 22:02Speaker 1: on the screen, and I do, But sometimes I need
- 22:04Speaker 1: to know how did we get here? And I still
- 22:07Speaker 1: don't know how Edmund got all of that treasure down
- 22:10Speaker 1: that mountain by himself and then did what with it?
- 22:15Speaker 1: Right right? I don't know. I mentioned this earlier. Everybody's
- 22:21Speaker 1: a trash bag human, Like, why is everybody terrible? Terrible?
- 22:26Speaker 1: I know there's not one, Okay, I'm sure there are,
- 22:29Speaker 1: Like Albert. I don't think Albert's a bad guy. No, Franz,
- 22:33Speaker 1: I don't think is a bad guy. Like the Morale kids,
- 22:36Speaker 1: I don't think are bad. I don't even think Mercedes
- 22:41Speaker 1: is bad. No, Cadarousse is bad. But the people who
- 22:45Speaker 1: are seen as what's the word I'm looking for here,
- 22:51Speaker 1: not higher society but more respected in society. They're all terrible.
- 22:57Speaker 1: You know. For me, it's frustrating to watch Don't Glars
- 23:00Speaker 1: is the There are so many bad people but don
- 23:02Speaker 1: Glars and like, ugh, But it is nice that they
- 23:07Speaker 1: continue to be terrible because you don't go, well, they
- 23:10Speaker 1: did one really terrible thing and now they've turned their
- 23:12Speaker 1: life around. They're bad people. They continue to be bad
- 23:15Speaker 1: people and act in ways that are kind of gross
- 23:18Speaker 1: and disgusting, and so you can kind of root for
- 23:20Speaker 1: their downfall. Yes I agree with that, but like, not
- 23:24Speaker 1: one of them has a moral compass. So when Eloise
- 23:27Speaker 1: just stands there with a straight face and she was
- 23:29Speaker 1: like Valentine delive, I offered and she insisted on doing
- 23:33Speaker 1: it herself, and Valentine doesn't even say I set the
- 23:37Speaker 1: trade down and walked away. Yeah, they set me away.
- 23:40Speaker 1: She doesn't even defend herself. Oh maybe she might not
- 23:43Speaker 1: even like realize maybe that had happened. But yeah, just
- 23:47Speaker 1: they're all terrible. I don't know, but in that moment,
- 23:50Speaker 1: she had had that conversation the day before with Eloise,
- 23:53Speaker 1: where Eloie's like, maybe you should join a convent, yeah,
- 23:56Speaker 1: and Valentine's like, so you could have all my money
- 23:58Speaker 1: and face it on to your son. No thanks, lady. Yeah,
- 24:01Speaker 1: I don't know why Valentine want to be like, wait
- 24:04Speaker 1: a minute, just yesterday throwing a fit before they like
- 24:08Speaker 1: take her out in handcuffs or whatever. You know, that
- 24:11Speaker 1: doesn't make any sense to me unless they're unless like
- 24:14Speaker 1: that's like some sort of reflection of the era, or
- 24:18Speaker 1: you wouldn't perhaps make a scene. I don't know. I
- 24:22Speaker 1: did find her docileness to be shocking frustrating. Mm hmmm,
- 24:28Speaker 1: go down, swinging girl. Kind of makes me like really
- 24:32Speaker 1: lose faith in humanity that these people are so bad
- 24:36Speaker 1: to the core. Anyway, Edmund's drug use is getting worse. Yes,
- 24:43Speaker 1: I'm still unaware of like actually what he's taking it.
- 24:47Speaker 1: To me, it seems like when he gets like spiral,
- 24:49Speaker 1: it's like whatever's an equivalent to like a saying yeah
- 24:53Speaker 1: yeah again. They're probably naming it in the book, Yeah yeah.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Do you have any other wishes? No, that's really it.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I have some questions for you. Okay, okay, where do
- 25:03Speaker 1: we land on Fernand? We we agree that they're terrible,
- 25:08Speaker 1: but I was kind of surprised when the violence against
- 25:12Speaker 1: Mercedes kind of took me by surprise. Who is the worst?
- 25:15Speaker 1: If you had to rank like the worst guys one
- 25:18Speaker 1: to three, how would you rank them? And maybe one
- 25:21Speaker 1: to four? Because where does where does where does Edmund
- 25:23Speaker 1: fit in this? Oh? You know before I would have
- 25:27Speaker 1: said Fernand is the least bad because prior to this
- 25:32Speaker 1: episode he just seemed kind of slimy and social climby
- 25:35Speaker 1: and Danglars. He and Fernand are kind of on equal
- 25:39Speaker 1: footing to me in terms of like willing to do
- 25:42Speaker 1: whatever it is to put themselves in the right position.
- 25:44Speaker 1: But you know, for Nanz smacking his wife, but Don
- 25:47Speaker 1: Glars hates his wife too. I've never seen it, but
- 25:49Speaker 1: you know, he in the last episode is like, I'm
- 25:52Speaker 1: going to expose your affair. If you don't do go
- 25:55Speaker 1: go with me on this one, right, So I think
- 25:58Speaker 1: they're kind of on equal footage. I do think Villefort
- 26:01Speaker 1: is worse because I think Villafort is actively being evil
- 26:06Speaker 1: and he's investigating people, and it was interesting to see
- 26:10Speaker 1: that flashback to him going to see his father from
- 26:12Speaker 1: episode one, and you're like, oh, it's all coming back.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Your chickens are coming home to roost Our. Villefort and
- 26:18Speaker 1: Edmund on equal footing. To me, maybe they're both pretty calculating.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Edmund's better at it, but Edmund has more resources. Yeah,
- 26:29Speaker 1: you really think Edmund and Villefort are equal in there?
- 26:34Speaker 1: You think Edmund's worse. No, I think you think Villafort's worse.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Villaport murdered a baby. This is true. I had forgotten
- 26:41Speaker 1: about that. Yes, Villefort is worse. Edmund has not committed
- 26:44Speaker 1: murder that we're aware of. That we're aware of, Yeah,
- 26:47Speaker 1: only indirectly by allowing people to steal poison from his
- 26:52Speaker 1: home and making them aware that it's there. I don't
- 26:54Speaker 1: I don't want. I don't want Edmund to be terrible.
- 26:58Speaker 1: I want him to be justified. And what he's doing it,
- 27:03Speaker 1: Oh my god, it's a hard road to get there.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I think I want to feel that too. But objectively,
- 27:10Speaker 1: you know, part of me is like, well, for the
- 27:12Speaker 1: most part, like he ended that engagement between Valentine and
- 27:18Speaker 1: Franz because he's, you know, on the side of the
- 27:21Speaker 1: morale kid. To me, I'm like, that's a good thing.
- 27:24Speaker 1: She shouldn't have gotten to that loveless marriage just because
- 27:27Speaker 1: her dad wanted her to. He's trying to help out
- 27:30Speaker 1: the people who have helped Pimure, but it's also because
- 27:33Speaker 1: of him that she ends up going to prison. Yeah. So, yes,
- 27:38Speaker 1: we didn't talk about you and I talked about this.
- 27:41Speaker 1: There was some language in this. Oh yeah. Now I
- 27:45Speaker 1: watch the show via Amazon Prime. So you have a
- 27:48Speaker 1: PBS subscription via Amazon like add it on correct, got it?
- 27:52Speaker 1: And I watched her subtitles because that's how I roll same.
- 27:56Speaker 1: I was shocked at the language in those episode Uh huh.
- 28:01Speaker 1: So much of the fact that, like I texted you,
- 28:03Speaker 1: I was like, oh my god, they said the F
- 28:04Speaker 1: word in this episode, and your experience was that they
- 28:08Speaker 1: did not. No, So I watch it on the PBS app.
- 28:11Speaker 1: I have a PBS Passport subscription, And in the subtitles,
- 28:16Speaker 1: it's muted, not bleeped. The sound is muted, and the
- 28:19Speaker 1: subtitle even says muted over the work. Wow. So I'm
- 28:23Speaker 1: not sure I would have even known what he was
- 28:25Speaker 1: saying if you hadn't told me. It makes perfect sense. Yeah,
- 28:28Speaker 1: it has two different scenes, two scenes. The scene where
- 28:31Speaker 1: I noticed it. I didn't notice it in the original
- 28:34Speaker 1: scene because I was folding laundry. I remember the scene exactly.
- 28:38Speaker 1: I was folding laundry. But the scene between the Villefort
- 28:41Speaker 1: and the investigator when they talk about Cadarousse, Yeah, and
- 28:44Speaker 1: Villefort gets angry. There's something said there. And then the
- 28:47Speaker 1: scene between Fernand and Mercedes about the earrings. He says
- 28:55Speaker 1: the F word. Fernand makes an accusation about the count
- 28:58Speaker 1: and is it Yakapo the he's talking about. No, I
- 29:01Speaker 1: think it's Haiti he's referring to. Oh, that makes more sense.
- 29:06Speaker 1: That makes more sense. Yeah, we're not saying much of Haiti.
- 29:09Speaker 1: I kind of forget that she's there. She just every
- 29:10Speaker 1: once in while pops in. Yeah. So it was interesting.
- 29:13Speaker 1: So I yes, I am curious from listeners like did
- 29:16Speaker 1: they did they pick up on either like the muted words,
- 29:19Speaker 1: or did you get that, Hey, look, I still like
- 29:21Speaker 1: a sailor, so I don't. I am unbothered by that.
- 29:25Speaker 1: The scene at the end with Edmund and Mercedes. Do
- 29:28Speaker 1: you think Edmund wanted Mercedes to finally recognize him or
- 29:31Speaker 1: do you think he was afraid of being exposed there? No,
- 29:35Speaker 1: I think he does. You could say that him calling
- 29:38Speaker 1: her Mercedes was an accident, but he goes on to
- 29:41Speaker 1: reveal too much information that it could be accidental. I
- 29:45Speaker 1: think he wants her to know at this point. Yeah,
- 29:46Speaker 1: I think so too. I mean that's the goal, right
- 29:50Speaker 1: I think if I was, Yeah, that's where that's what
- 29:52Speaker 1: gives him power. Yeah, exactly exactly. I think he ultimately
- 29:56Speaker 1: wants all of them to know who he is in
- 29:58Speaker 1: due time. Oh good, well, hey, thank you for listening
