- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Theology Made Podcast, I'm Jordan.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: In today's episode,
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: we're going to look at Tolkien's Father Christmas,
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: When Imagination Became Incarnation.
- 0:19every december in a small house on northmore road in oxford j r
- 0:24r tolkien sat at
- 0:25his desk while the rest of the world knew him as a professor
- 0:29and creator of middle
- 0:29earth to his children he was father christmas each year for
- 0:34over two decades
- 0:35letters would arrive in the mail addressed in spidery
- 0:37handwriting from the north
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: pole
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: They were written in shimmering ink,
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: illustrated with polar bears,
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: snowmen,
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: and moonlight battles against goblins.
- 0:46But hidden beneath the magic was something far deeper,
- 0:49a theology of imagination.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Because for Tolkien, fantasy was never about escape.
- 0:55it was about truth disguised as wonder a way to express the
- 0:59mystery of a god who
- 1:00became flesh the year was nineteen twenty europe was still
- 1:03recovering from the
- 1:04great war tolkien now a young father had lost friends in the
- 1:07trenches and carried
- 1:08their ghosts in his heart that christmas his eldest son john
- 1:11received a letter the
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: envelope was edged with frost and stamped north pole
- 1:17inside was a message from father christmas and so began one of
- 1:20the most touching
- 1:21creative rituals in literary history each year new letters
- 1:25arrived they told of
- 1:26battles between goblins and polar bears of lost presents
- 1:30mischievous elves and
- 1:32snow-storms that threaten christmas deliveries but between the
- 1:35lines you could
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: trace tolkien's life his faith his grief his hope
- 1:40as the years passed the letters grew darker war returned this
- 1:43time on a global
- 1:44scale bombs fell on london two of tolkien's sons were sent to
- 1:48the front and from
- 1:49the north pole father christmas began writing not just of toys
- 1:53and snow but of
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: courage endurance and light in the darkness
- 1:58Most people assume Tolkien's imagination was a retreat from the
- 2:01real world,
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: a refuge from the horrors of war.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: But for him, it wasn't.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: It was a form of resistance.
- 2:08In 1939,
- 2:08the same year Germany invaded Poland,
- 2:11Tolkien delivered a lecture at St.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Andrew's titled On Fairy Stories.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: In it, he argued that myths are not lies.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: They are echoes, refractions of a deeper truth.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Every time a story makes us long for goodness,
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: every time a tale of light overcomes shadow,
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: we are hearing the faint music of the gospel behind all stories.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: He coined a word for this, sub-creation.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: God,
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Tolkien said,
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: is the primary creator,
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: and when we craft words of our own,
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: we become sub-creators,
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: imitating the divine imagination in miniature.
- 2:42our creativity is an act of worship a reflection of the image
- 2:45of god to create it
- 2:47all is to whisper i believe in a maker who made me to make
- 2:50tolkien despised the
- 2:51modern notion that fantasy was childish he saw fairy stories as
- 2:56the most adult form
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: of art because they reawaken what cynicism tries to kill
- 3:02wonder he wrote to c.s lewis that christianity itself is a myth
- 3:06which is also a
- 3:07fact the one story in which the author enters his own narrative
- 3:11for tolkien the
- 3:12incarnation was not just doctrine it was the prototype of every
- 3:15good story eternal
- 3:17breaks into the temporal the infinite enters the finite the
- 3:20creator steps into
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: creation and redeems it from the inside
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: That's why he called the moment of Christ's birth the eucatastrophe,
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: the good catastrophe,
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: the joyful twist that turns despair into redemption.
- 3:33He wrote,
- 3:34it's a sudden and miraculous grace never to be counted on yet
- 3:38always to be hoped for.
- 3:39And he insisted every story that moves us from fairy tales to
- 3:43epics borrows its
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: power from that single event.
- 3:46so when tolkien wrote his father christmas letters about polar
- 3:49bears battling
- 3:50goblins stars falling from the sky and courage in the cold he
- 3:53wasn't escaping
- 3:54reality he was revealing it he was teaching his children that
- 3:58the world is not
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: random or meaningless it is enchanted by grace
- 4:02and even in a house blacked out for the air raids he wanted
- 4:05them to believe what he
- 4:06called the great christian fairy story that the light shines in
- 4:10the darkness and
- 4:11the darkness cannot overcome it tolkien never preached in his
- 4:15father christmas
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: letters he didn't need to
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Theology was woven into the world itself.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Father Christmas is not omnipotent.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: He grows weary, fights evil, forgets things.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: He is a figure of grace inside a fallen world,
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: powerful yet vulnerable,
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: like the Christ child himself.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: And the North Pole wasn't heaven.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: It was the borderland between wonder and weariness.
- 4:36It was like a little parable of faith,
- 4:38where joy costs something and goodness still bleeds.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: By the final letters in the 1940s, Tolkien's children were grown,
- 4:46and the world was once again at war the handwriting had grown
- 4:49shaky the stories
- 4:50were shorter but even then father christmas signed each one the
- 4:54same way with love
- 4:56from father christmas it wasn't just a farewell to his children
- 5:00it was a quiet
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: benediction to a world that had forgotten how to believe
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Tolkien believed imagination wasn't the opposite of reality,
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: but the seedbed of faith,
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: because every time a story stirs our longing for beauty,
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: it's awakening something ancient in us,
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: the echo of Eden and the promise of Bethlehem.
- 5:19That's why,
- 5:19in a sense,
- 5:20Father Christmas was Tolkien's rehearsal for The Lord of the
- 5:22Rings.
- 5:23Both stories share the same heartbeat,
- 5:25that evil may rage,
- 5:27goodness endures.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Hope is never lost, only hidden.
- 5:30And the smallest lights,
- 5:31even the candle in the dark,
- 5:32can still defy the shadow.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: And that's Advent's theology, disguised in snow and ink.
- 5:38Because the miracle of the Incarnation isn't that God stepped
- 5:40into a perfect world,
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: but that he chose to step into ours.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: The imagination of Tolkien's Father Christmas was not fantasy.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: It was faith translated for children.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: So as you wrap the final gifts or sit by the fire this Christmas,
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: remember that our stories,
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: even the make-believe ones,
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: are never wasted.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Every tale of light piercing darkness,
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: every whisper of joy after sorrow,
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: every Father Christmas letter written in love,
- 6:04they all point towards the truest story of all,
- 6:06that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: The storyteller's greatest act is not invention.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: It's participation,
- 6:13joining the author of all things and telling the story of
- 6:17redemption through
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: beauty,
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: wonder,
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: and grace.
- 6:21Hey,
- 6:21if this episode stirred your imagination,
- 6:23share it with a friend this Christmas.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And from all of us at Theology Made, Merry Christmas.
