- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell Us.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Now, ladies, welcome to Meet Eater Trivia Meater Podcast. Welcome
- 0:27Speaker 2: to Meet Eater Radio live at eleven am Mountain Time
- 0:29Speaker 2: on September nineteenth, and we're live from Meet Eater HQ
- 0:33Speaker 2: and Bozeman, Montana. I'm your host, Spencer Newhart, joined today
- 0:37Speaker 2: by Jannis Putellus and Randall Williams. On today's show, we're
- 0:41Speaker 2: calling Chester Floyd for an update on his archery hunt
- 0:44Speaker 2: in Montana. Then we'll review the nineteen ninety six documentary
- 0:48Speaker 2: project Grizzly for the Meat Eater Movie Club, followed by
- 0:51Speaker 2: one minute fishing with Pat Dirkin in Idaho. Then we'll
- 0:55Speaker 2: do some show and tell with items we brought into
- 0:57Speaker 2: the studio, and finally we'll interview chef Yevang about Monk
- 1:01Speaker 2: Cooking and his newest restaurant. But first we have Yanni
- 1:05Speaker 2: Putellis over here, who's googling whether or not he looks
- 1:08Speaker 2: like jeredy West.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:10Speaker 4: I'm looking at images of him, and he lived a
- 1:13Speaker 4: long time, so that it spans, you know, a whole lifetime,
- 1:17Speaker 4: and I'm not seeing it.
- 1:18Speaker 1: But I don't know what.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Me and Randall agreed a little bit, A little bit.
- 1:23Speaker 5: I think you look like the actor who portrayed Jerry
- 1:25Speaker 5: West in the hbo OH series about the Showtime Lakers.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Now, Yanni just got home from an elk? Contian, Did
- 1:33Speaker 2: you kill an elk?
- 1:35Speaker 4: Did not kill an elk?
- 1:37Speaker 2: How close did you get to killing an elk?
- 1:39Speaker 4: Seventy eighty yards?
- 1:41Speaker 2: And is that close in your book?
- 1:42Speaker 4: Not really for a moment. I had, like there was
- 1:46Speaker 4: a very high moment there when he was bugling. I
- 1:50Speaker 4: was approaching him with my camera guy. I was trying
- 1:53Speaker 4: to actually get the wind right, so I was kind
- 1:54Speaker 4: of going around high and I had to go across
- 1:57Speaker 4: a super loud screen. You know, scree sometimes can be
- 2:00Speaker 4: dense and the other time it's very volcanic and kind
- 2:02Speaker 4: of hairy, and that stuff is just like, you know,
- 2:06Speaker 4: sold out. But the wind was howling. We got around him,
- 2:09Speaker 4: but we bumped a cow just as we got around him,
- 2:12Speaker 4: and I don't know if he was with the cow
- 2:13Speaker 4: or not. Again, the wind's howling, so when they bugle,
- 2:16Speaker 4: you can't tell if they're one hundred yards away two
- 2:19Speaker 4: hundred yards away. Anyways, I pop over this little rise
- 2:23Speaker 4: and I see him. He's got his nose to the
- 2:25Speaker 4: ground like a bird.
- 2:26Speaker 5: Dog. You know, he's a little big look.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Just a regular five point not big, probably a two
- 2:31Speaker 4: year old. And uh, we had just enough cover that
- 2:36Speaker 4: we kind of like faded back just a little bit,
- 2:38Speaker 4: and it was these smaller pines and there was a
- 2:41Speaker 4: little valley between the two of us, and I just
- 2:43Speaker 4: gave him one cow call, and man, as soon as
- 2:45Speaker 4: he heard it, he just lifted his head, looked right
- 2:47Speaker 4: at me, and I'm like, oh, what I'm telling Tyler,
- 2:51Speaker 4: get ready, it's on. And he put his head back
- 2:56Speaker 4: down on that centrail and then just kept going on
- 2:59Speaker 4: wherever that cow went. We chased him down the bugle
- 3:03Speaker 4: a few more times, but never caught up to him again.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Now this was the hunt with doctor Seth Walkers, that's
- 3:08Speaker 2: who had donkeys. How did that go? Hunting with donkeys
- 3:11Speaker 2: in the back country?
- 3:12Speaker 4: It was great? They were very uh is amiable the
- 3:16Speaker 4: right word?
- 3:18Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 3:20Speaker 4: Yeah, just like pretty easy to take care of, packed well,
- 3:27Speaker 4: and like you'd just be hanging out at camp at
- 3:28Speaker 4: lunch and all of a sudden a donkey would just
- 3:30Speaker 4: walk up and just stand there as if they wanted
- 3:33Speaker 4: to just hang out and join the conversation.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Huh.
- 3:38Speaker 4: We did have one donkey issue where while we were gone,
- 3:41Speaker 4: one of the donkeys was didn't want to be inside
- 3:44Speaker 4: the electric fence, so we just let it free roam.
- 3:46Speaker 4: But because it heard animals, it wouldn't leave the ones
- 3:48Speaker 4: that were inside the electric fence. It tripped, walked on.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Don't really know what happened, but I came back to
- 3:56Speaker 4: my teepee and it had a third door in it,
- 4:00Speaker 4: like a four foot rip. Yeah. That was the day
- 4:03Speaker 4: before the big weather came, and luckily I had a
- 4:05Speaker 4: tarp so we were able to you know, do a
- 4:06Speaker 4: little tent city action and we survived it. But yeah,
- 4:11Speaker 4: Seth did get a shot. He was just still. It
- 4:14Speaker 4: was early season, right, so the bugling was half assed.
- 4:18Speaker 4: We saw half the elk we saw. We're just bachelor
- 4:20Speaker 4: group bowls that weren't bugling. But he was just still
- 4:24Speaker 4: hunting down a ridge and just had a bowl cross
- 4:27Speaker 4: right in front of that, you know, low twenties twenty
- 4:30Speaker 4: yards and hit a limb that he didn't see. Arrow
- 4:34Speaker 4: just blew up.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Did it make you want to add donkeys to the
- 4:37Speaker 2: Jannis Putellis Ranch?
- 4:40Speaker 4: Oh man, We discussed it a lot, you know, one
- 4:43Speaker 4: it's one of those things. It's like any animal you
- 4:45Speaker 4: have at your house, even though they'd work for you
- 4:51Speaker 4: you had, you have to have them because you enjoy them.
- 4:54Speaker 4: It's like our chickens. We don't eat cheap eggs by
- 4:58Speaker 4: any you know. You I eat my cheap eggs because
- 5:01Speaker 4: I just give you a dozen, you know, and I
- 5:03Speaker 4: don't think I've given you some. Yes, I should bring
- 5:05Speaker 4: them in for you. But same thing with the donkeys.
- 5:08Speaker 4: It's like, Okay, there's eleven and a half months or
- 5:11Speaker 4: eleven months where they're just going to be around and
- 5:14Speaker 4: you're taking care of them. So are you going to
- 5:16Speaker 4: enjoy those eleven months so that you can have them
- 5:19Speaker 4: to do your once or twice a year elk adventure
- 5:22Speaker 4: and pack some meat out?
- 5:23Speaker 1: You know.
- 5:24Speaker 5: I'll be honest. About thirty six hours ago, I was
- 5:26Speaker 5: on a half dozen donkey rescue websites.
- 5:28Speaker 2: M Oh yeah, inspired by what the.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Review of the donks. Our neighbor used to have some donks.
- 5:36Speaker 5: They all went away. But yeah, I'm, you know, always
- 5:42Speaker 5: interested in large animals that seem friendly.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Yeah. Now, I will say, remember how when we interviewed
- 5:47Speaker 4: Seth a few weeks ago, and I was I gave
- 5:51Speaker 4: you a little bio about him about how he had
- 5:53Speaker 4: this little goal of his to kill elk every year
- 5:56Speaker 4: public land with his bow, but never hunt the same
- 5:59Speaker 4: mountain range three times or same spot slash mountain range
- 6:02Speaker 4: three years in a row. And I think he was
- 6:05Speaker 4: on like eleven out of thirteen years at the end
- 6:09Speaker 4: of last year. Well, two days after we got home,
- 6:12Speaker 4: he went out for a walk with his son in
- 6:14Speaker 4: the evening and killed another bowl in a new mountain range.
- 6:19Speaker 5: It's impressive.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Uh huh, So what a killer. Yeah, he's a mega killer.
- 6:23Speaker 4: And you know there's a little bit of that, you know,
- 6:26Speaker 4: horseshoes stuck up his butt, you know, which some people
- 6:28Speaker 4: just have. They're just magnets.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I'm not saying it, not twelve out of fourteen years,
- 6:33Speaker 2: but it helps.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Sure, okay, you know, but no, for sure, you know,
- 6:38Speaker 4: just straight up killer. And of course, like we haunt
- 6:40Speaker 4: our asses off, we averaged. I don't have one of
- 6:43Speaker 4: those fancy watches, but everybody else seems to have a watch, So.
- 6:48Speaker 5: No fence.
- 6:48Speaker 4: I do for running, but I don't wear it every day.
- 6:51Speaker 4: And so the guys were like, yeah, we're averaging fourteen
- 6:55Speaker 4: miles a day and about three thousand feet of elevation game,
- 7:00Speaker 4: which is solid, you know, for for a week. I
- 7:02Speaker 4: was solid a week of work. So we busted our
- 7:07Speaker 4: asses off and Seth literally goes for a walk with
- 7:11Speaker 4: his son and uh, he's like, yeah, I heard some bugling.
- 7:15Speaker 4: We got a little closer, but they're kind of far away.
- 7:17Speaker 4: I made two cow calls and then my son's like, hey,
- 7:20Speaker 4: there he is. He's coming, and he's like, I had
- 7:23Speaker 4: a knock and arrow and then he kept coming and
- 7:25Speaker 4: I shot him.
- 7:26Speaker 2: So he earned that with you and then got it
- 7:30Speaker 2: with his son.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Sure.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Speaking of el Khunt, our next guest is on one
- 7:35Speaker 2: right now.
- 7:36Speaker 6: I'm going to interrupt you, Spencer. Sorry to completely throw
- 7:38Speaker 6: off your float, but I don't want to jump over
- 7:40Speaker 6: this Jerry West things. We've got people who in the
- 7:41Speaker 6: comments who agree, and I just want to bring up
- 7:43Speaker 6: a picture here.
- 7:46Speaker 4: No, that's Jerry West. That's a young Jerry Wes. I don't.
- 7:51Speaker 5: I just like to say, shout out Delamere and Hopkins.
- 7:54Speaker 5: I see the comment there in the in the chat.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Appreciate Oh let us know if Yanni indeed looks like
- 8:03Speaker 2: Jerry West. Now, speaking of elk Hunts, our next guest
- 8:06Speaker 2: is on one right now, joining us on the line
- 8:09Speaker 2: is our very own Chester Floyd, who's calling in from
- 8:12Speaker 2: an archery, deer and elk hunt in Montana. Chester, welcome
- 8:16Speaker 2: to the show and tell us where you're standing right now.
- 8:18Speaker 2: You don't have to be too specific.
- 8:21Speaker 4: You guys are muted.
- 8:24Speaker 1: What's up?
- 8:25Speaker 7: Guys? Can you hear us?
- 8:26Speaker 4: Yeah, we can hear you now. They had their phone
- 8:28Speaker 4: muted because we were being so loud. They're afraid that
- 8:31Speaker 4: we're going to spook their helth.
- 8:33Speaker 8: Well, we do have a bull bedded like I don't know,
- 8:36Speaker 8: he's probably five hundred yards away from us, So keep
- 8:38Speaker 8: it down and good.
- 8:40Speaker 5: I can't.
- 8:42Speaker 4: So, Chester, I didn't hear that you were going to
- 8:44Speaker 4: be on a elk hunt with Corey. Last I heard
- 8:47Speaker 4: you were in eastern Montana hunting mule deer, and now
- 8:50Speaker 4: you're magically with Corey uh in somewhere else in Montana
- 8:54Speaker 4: hunting elk. How'd that come about?
- 8:57Speaker 9: Well, Yanni, I was out in eastern Montana and the
- 9:03Speaker 9: deer hunting wasn't what I expected it to be. Chili
- 9:07Speaker 9: actually came out there with me and we had one
- 9:09Speaker 9: stock on a nice like, I don't know, one hundred
- 9:11Speaker 9: and fifty inch mule there, but it was super hot
- 9:13Speaker 9: and windy out there. We're roasting Wisconsin brats right now,
- 9:18Speaker 9: so we're getting smoked a little bit.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Oh nice, boys, Is that are those wild game? Or
- 9:23Speaker 4: is that just straight up pork from Wisconsin?
- 9:26Speaker 7: Oh? You know it, buddy, I know what Johnsonville.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Oh oh yeah, that doesn't count as a Wisconsin brought. Uh, Chester,
- 9:38Speaker 4: are you hunting with you with a tradbill? Uh? Nope, No,
- 9:45Speaker 4: that's all right. I'm just wondering. I don't judge if
- 9:48Speaker 4: you're hunting with one or without one. All right, give
- 9:50Speaker 4: me a an elk report. You guys got a bowl
- 9:52Speaker 4: five hundred yards away. But uh, are they bugling? That's
- 9:56Speaker 4: what everybody wants to know. Are they bugling?
- 9:59Speaker 5: Uh?
- 9:59Speaker 7: So, we had some weather roll in yesterday.
- 10:01Speaker 8: It rained probably about an inch and a half, and
- 10:05Speaker 8: it kind of shut him up.
- 10:06Speaker 7: It was pretty consistent before that. I've been out here
- 10:09Speaker 7: for a week seeing elk every morning, hearing elk every evening.
- 10:16Speaker 7: But again, that rain kind of shut him up a
- 10:17Speaker 7: little bit.
- 10:18Speaker 8: It's made the hunting conditions great because it's nice and cool,
- 10:20Speaker 8: the grass is real quiet. But we did get into
- 10:23Speaker 8: a bowl this morning fifty yards from the bowl, ten
- 10:26Speaker 8: yards from one of his cows, and then another cow
- 10:29Speaker 8: winded us. I probably could have shot him at fifty,
- 10:33Speaker 8: but that's a long ways. It felt like he was
- 10:36Speaker 8: going to come in closer. He was hot on that cow.
- 10:38Speaker 7: For a second. So now we're roasting weenies and.
- 10:42Speaker 9: About as close as you can get to shooting the
- 10:44Speaker 9: elk without getting them. I feel like Corey even asked
- 10:48Speaker 9: me at one point, He's like, you want to shoot
- 10:50Speaker 9: that cow? I definitely thought about it, but that bowl
- 10:55Speaker 9: was just right behind him.
- 10:56Speaker 7: So sure, I think we made a call.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Now that you have Chester joining your Corey, have you
- 11:02Speaker 4: taken the position of the caller or how's that working?
- 11:07Speaker 7: Well?
- 11:07Speaker 8: Actually, this group that we're on here, I've been chasing
- 11:11Speaker 8: I'm pretty sure it's the same group since last Friday,
- 11:14Speaker 8: so it's been Today's Day's seven chasing this bowl around.
- 11:19Speaker 8: So Chester's been kind enough to kind of let me
- 11:22Speaker 8: keep trying to kill this one. But again, if there
- 11:25Speaker 8: was an opportunity for a cow or a younger bull,
- 11:28Speaker 8: I would let him jump in front of me and
- 11:30Speaker 8: do some calling. So we've kind of been going back
- 11:33Speaker 8: and forth. We did a little rock paper scissors yesterday
- 11:36Speaker 8: to see who would get the shot, but the opportunity
- 11:39Speaker 8: never arose.
- 11:40Speaker 7: So we've been going back and forth depending on the situation.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Are you guys bugling at him more or cow calling
- 11:48Speaker 4: at him?
- 11:48Speaker 1: Moore?
- 11:49Speaker 4: Your what's your tactic right now? Tell me what your
- 11:51Speaker 4: what your plan is going to be for this upcoming
- 11:53Speaker 4: afternoon hunt. How are you going to kill him?
- 11:56Speaker 8: Well, we got eyes on some elk across this big
- 11:58Speaker 8: canyon that we're on here, So what we'll probably do
- 12:02Speaker 8: is kind of just work around this base. And he's
- 12:05Speaker 8: been responsive to bugles, but then you get in close
- 12:07Speaker 8: and he kind of shuts up. He's also been responsive
- 12:11Speaker 8: to cow calls, but again, I think I've bumped him
- 12:14Speaker 8: three different times, so I'm trying to be really kind
- 12:18Speaker 8: of tame, and I don't want to bump him again obviously,
- 12:21Speaker 8: so I think it's more let him bugle and we'll
- 12:24Speaker 8: try and sneak in. That's what we did this morning.
- 12:26Speaker 8: He was making all the noise and we set up
- 12:29Speaker 8: and we got lucky.
- 12:30Speaker 4: We were right in their.
- 12:30Speaker 7: Path, just obviously not lucky enough.
- 12:33Speaker 8: So we're gonna keep an eye on this bowl, but
- 12:35Speaker 8: we also have eyes on elk across the canyon. So
- 12:38Speaker 8: we got we got plan a through g going at
- 12:41Speaker 8: the moment.
- 12:42Speaker 4: Nice, nice, All right, Spencer's got a question for you, Corey.
- 12:45Speaker 2: How many more days of your haunter left?
- 12:48Speaker 7: I should probably go home about Saturday? So what's today
- 12:53Speaker 7: on October?
- 12:54Speaker 2: Today is Thursday? If you want to follow along with
- 12:58Speaker 2: Corey's hunt, he's doing daily updates on meat Eater's Instagram channel,
- 13:02Speaker 2: so you can check out his successes or failures over there. Randa,
- 13:07Speaker 2: what are you doing over here?
- 13:08Speaker 5: I was just checking which date was Saturday? Saturday? Looks
- 13:13Speaker 5: like the twentieth. I'm just looking at it here.
- 13:16Speaker 4: On our hive.
- 13:18Speaker 5: Next year, Oh that's right, Yeah, silly me, silly me.
- 13:22Speaker 5: Why do I have a calendar for next year at hand?
- 13:25Speaker 2: Oh?
- 13:25Speaker 5: It's the fed up old shitters calendar that will go
- 13:29Speaker 5: on sale next week. I believe.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Did you have a party making that?
- 13:33Speaker 1: I did?
- 13:33Speaker 5: I did. I got to review all the photos of
- 13:36Speaker 5: the various outdoor commodes, and then we had a fun
- 13:39Speaker 5: afternoon coming up with captions with Steve.
- 13:42Speaker 2: There was a writer session meeting Randall Brodie in a
- 13:44Speaker 2: regular old writer's room, coming up with quips about toilets
- 13:48Speaker 2: for a calendar Chester. Any final words before we say
- 13:52Speaker 2: goodbye and let you boys eat those Johnsonville brats.
- 13:56Speaker 9: Yes, actually, I'd like to say one more thing before
- 13:58Speaker 9: we burn these brown here. So since we have this,
- 14:04Speaker 9: we're lucky enough here at me Eater to have a
- 14:06Speaker 9: platform where a bunch of people are listening to our
- 14:10Speaker 9: content and whatnot. I figured i'd kind of do a
- 14:14Speaker 9: little bit of a ask for help type thing, which
- 14:17Speaker 9: I know we don't typically do. But I have a
- 14:20Speaker 9: buddy who's who's a go getter in the outdoors and
- 14:24Speaker 9: just in life in general. He's soon to be father,
- 14:28Speaker 9: and he's been diagnosed with kind.
- 14:31Speaker 7: Of a rare.
- 14:33Speaker 9: Disease, and basically what's happening is his muscles in his
- 14:38Speaker 9: hands and his arms like forearms and stuff are deteriorate,
- 14:44Speaker 9: like just going downhill, and it's getting worse and worse,
- 14:48Speaker 9: and you know, he wants to be able to keep
- 14:49Speaker 9: doing what he loves to do. When he's tried a
- 14:52Speaker 9: bunch of different things like stem cells. He's been to
- 14:55Speaker 9: Mayo a few times, and I'm gonna just kind of
- 14:59Speaker 9: let you know what this is a little bit, and
- 15:01Speaker 9: then I guess, ultimately if anybody has any info or
- 15:06Speaker 9: has dealt with this or can point my buddy Devin
- 15:10Speaker 9: in the right direction, that'd be wonderful. So it's called
- 15:16Speaker 9: Hira Yama disease h I r A y A m
- 15:21Speaker 9: a also known as mona mono melic. I can barely
- 15:29Speaker 9: pronounce this here Amuo trophy monomelic amuo trophy, and it's
- 15:35Speaker 9: a rare neurological disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness and wasting,
- 15:41Speaker 9: typically in one arm or a hand in his case,
- 15:45Speaker 9: both arms and hands. Anyways, you know, he's really trying
- 15:51Speaker 9: to just continue on doing what he's doing. And he
- 15:54Speaker 9: told me some days he's worried if he can one
- 15:57Speaker 9: day he's gonna wake up and not be able to
- 15:59Speaker 9: like go to the next day because he can't pick
- 16:03Speaker 9: up something or whatnot.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Chester, send your thoughts, send our thoughts to your buddy,
- 16:09Speaker 2: and if anyone has any feedback for Chester's buddy, hit
- 16:12Speaker 2: up Chester on Instagram and he'll pass that along. Now,
- 16:16Speaker 2: the last thing here before we go, Corey. There is
- 16:19Speaker 2: someone in the chat named Sarah Calkins who says he
- 16:23Speaker 2: doesn't have to be home until Sunday, followed by another
- 16:26Speaker 2: comment that says, but he better not be empty handed.
- 16:31Speaker 5: And since you're eating all the bros, you better have
- 16:33Speaker 5: an elk.
- 16:36Speaker 7: I got three more days and I better start hitting
- 16:38Speaker 7: some grouse.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Then all right, boys, good luck Corey. We will follow
- 16:43Speaker 2: along on Instagram with your hunt. Thanks guys, Thanks guys.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Now.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Our next segment is me Theater Movie Club. This week
- 16:53Speaker 2: we're reviewing the nineteen ninety six documentary Project Grizzly.
- 17:09Speaker 5: Project Grizzly is a quirky and captivating nineteen ninety six
- 17:13Speaker 5: Canadian documentary directed by Peter Lynch. It follows the eccentric
- 17:17Speaker 5: inventor Troy Hertebies on his obsessive quest to create a
- 17:21Speaker 5: suit of armour capable with standing a grizzly bear attack.
- 17:24Speaker 5: Inspired by terrifying yet fascinating encounter with a grizzly, Troy's
- 17:27Speaker 5: journey is equal parts poignant and absurd, as he subjects
- 17:30Speaker 5: himself to increasingly dangerous experiments to prove the efficacy of
- 17:34Speaker 5: his invention. In many respects, the film provides an unsettling
- 17:38Speaker 5: commentary on the absurdity of man's search for purpose in
- 17:40Speaker 5: the modern world from a materiless perspective. The film's brief
- 17:44Speaker 5: mention of Troy's unused degree in resource management and his
- 17:46Speaker 5: venomous disdain for so called experts are revealing. This detail
- 17:50Speaker 5: speaks to a largest sidal issue that has only become
- 17:52Speaker 5: more pressing since the film's release, the disconnect between education
- 17:56Speaker 5: and meaningful employment opportunities, and, in a Freudian sense, viewer
- 18:00Speaker 5: can't help but wonder whether Troy's fumbling attempts to create
- 18:02Speaker 5: an invincible suit of armor derived from a need to
- 18:05Speaker 5: eclipse his father's parallel don Quixote like quest. A bizarrely
- 18:09Speaker 5: detailed recreation of an Iroquois village that forms the backdrop
- 18:12Speaker 5: for Troy's earliest memories. We do not have much insight
- 18:15Speaker 5: into the relationship between our eccentric protagonist and his mother,
- 18:19Speaker 5: but in a telling aside, he notes that she has
- 18:21Speaker 5: not said anything to him about his project in the
- 18:24Speaker 5: seven years that he's been working on it. The documentary
- 18:28Speaker 5: thus presents a unique perspective on existential angst. Set against
- 18:31Speaker 5: the backdrop of the vast Canadian wilderness. Troy's obsessive mission,
- 18:35Speaker 5: while ostensibly about protection from bears, is really an attempt
- 18:38Speaker 5: to cobble together identity and purpose in a world that
- 18:41Speaker 5: doesn't seem to have a clear place for him. The
- 18:43Speaker 5: bear suit, born from a refusal to see a chance
- 18:46Speaker 5: animal encounter as meaningless, becomes a physical manifestation of his
- 18:50Speaker 5: struggle against insignificance in a vast, uncaring universe, and all
- 18:54Speaker 5: concluded this. Ultimately, Troy's inability to move in his unwieldy
- 18:59Speaker 5: cut costume in an attempt to encounter a real bear
- 19:02Speaker 5: underscores the tragic yet darkly comic nature of his quest.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Wow, is there anything left to be said after that?
- 19:08Speaker 4: No? Well, oh I don't think so.
- 19:10Speaker 5: In lieu of a hunt fish factoid, Spencer, I know
- 19:15Speaker 5: that you have an exciting discovery to share with our audience.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Yeah. Five minutes into watching this documentary yesterday, I was like,
- 19:21Speaker 2: where is this suit now? So I went to Google
- 19:24Speaker 2: and within a half hour I was speaking to the
- 19:27Speaker 2: current owner of the grizzly proof suit, which was the
- 19:31Speaker 2: Ursus What was it, Marx? It's the Mark seven, Mark six,
- 19:35Speaker 2: whatever it is, the one that he has in the film.
- 19:38Speaker 2: I've tracked down the current owner of that. On some
- 19:40Speaker 2: future episode of Media Radio, We're going to talk to
- 19:42Speaker 2: that person and get all the details about how they
- 19:45Speaker 2: came into possession of it.
- 19:48Speaker 5: Well, that's fantastic, gentlemen. I'm just curious for your initial
- 19:52Speaker 5: thoughts on the film.
- 19:54Speaker 2: My initial thoughts, this isn't a movie about like building
- 19:57Speaker 2: a grizzly bear proof suit. This is a about some
- 20:00Speaker 2: drinking buddies who take all their energy that normally, like
- 20:03Speaker 2: among a friend group, goes into hunting or fishing or
- 20:06Speaker 2: golfing or gardening, and they just put that into building
- 20:09Speaker 2: a RoboCop. That's what this documentary is to me.
- 20:12Speaker 4: And you felt like it was a group of buddies,
- 20:15Speaker 4: like they weren't hired hands.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I would well, okay. Later on he says something about
- 20:21Speaker 2: my research team, which I think his research team is
- 20:24Speaker 2: are his drinking buddies?
- 20:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I do have a note from Sydney here. Who
- 20:29Speaker 5: are these effing people with him? Was Sydney's reaction to
- 20:34Speaker 5: these buddies, buddies?
- 20:35Speaker 4: Those are actually some of my favorite parts were when
- 20:38Speaker 4: they're in the cafe just kind of shooting the bowl. Yes,
- 20:43Speaker 4: but yeah, I could never tell if they were genuine
- 20:47Speaker 4: friends or because of because I imagined to do what
- 20:50Speaker 4: he did here. He had deep pockets.
- 20:55Speaker 5: Deep debt. Yeah, I will say the one man who's
- 20:58Speaker 5: in charge of lobbing the explosives like grenades. He did
- 21:02Speaker 5: refer to him as Uncle John. Yeah, so I do
- 21:05Speaker 5: think that they weren't all hired hands, be honest. I mean,
- 21:11Speaker 5: did you watch this with anyone or did you screen
- 21:13Speaker 5: this by yourself?
- 21:15Speaker 4: Jennifer popped in and out of the room, and she
- 21:18Speaker 4: was captivated at moments. Once she realized what it was,
- 21:22Speaker 4: as you so beautifully described in the beginning, it became
- 21:27Speaker 4: a little more interesting. You know that it was really
- 21:29Speaker 4: a portrait of this person, not so much about the suit.
- 21:33Speaker 4: But even then, I think that she's a busy woman
- 21:36Speaker 4: and she decided that it wasn't worth her time.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Maybe she'll revisit that decision after hearing our little summary here.
- 21:47Speaker 5: I'm curious, out of the entirety of the film, what
- 21:51Speaker 5: about Troy's odyssey sort of struck you as resonated with
- 21:56Speaker 5: you giving your experience outdoors and in bear country, like.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Or like Yanni had just said, my favorite parts weren't
- 22:05Speaker 2: even related to the suit. I just loved how Canadian
- 22:09Speaker 2: in the nineties this felt where they're you know, ripping
- 22:11Speaker 2: SIGs in a diner and they're like playing pool at
- 22:14Speaker 2: a gentleman's club. They're tearing through mud puddles and a
- 22:17Speaker 2: quarter ton pickup.
- 22:18Speaker 5: He has a turtleneck with short sleeves.
- 22:20Speaker 4: I had Canadian friends in the nineties that wore berets.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, and buckskins, And at one point like
- 22:27Speaker 2: it's like, okay, it can't get more ridiculous than him
- 22:30Speaker 2: wearing a red beret and a buckskin jacket. And then
- 22:32Speaker 2: it cuts to him in a duster jacket.
- 22:34Speaker 5: Oh yeah, the duster.
- 22:35Speaker 2: I have you out did yourself? Yeah, just all the
- 22:38Speaker 2: stuff that's very Canadian. Where he's he's lighting a cigarette
- 22:40Speaker 2: with a blowtorch at one point, and how he acts
- 22:43Speaker 2: like his wife is the old ball and chain, and
- 22:45Speaker 2: like I'm only allowed out every other night between eleven
- 22:48Speaker 2: pm and one thirty am. Otherwise my bitch of a
- 22:52Speaker 2: wife is just going to be so angry with me.
- 22:54Speaker 2: And that that was very satisfying that the sit communists
- 22:57Speaker 2: in a genuine way.
- 22:59Speaker 5: He had when he was shaving at the wilderness camp
- 23:02Speaker 5: with his bowie knife. And here on the screen now
- 23:04Speaker 5: our viewers will enjoy some of the experiments in which
- 23:07Speaker 5: mister Hurdaby's tests how well his suit works.
- 23:11Speaker 4: Would you make a little compilation, no, I'm just playing
- 23:14Speaker 4: that little clip.
- 23:15Speaker 5: But he when he's shaving with the buck knife or
- 23:18Speaker 5: the bowie knife, you see there's a lit cigarette sitting
- 23:21Speaker 5: underneath the mirror so you can take drags in between strokes.
- 23:25Speaker 4: I was actually impressed with his with his physical fitness.
- 23:31Speaker 4: He's somehow he's doing something to stay in shape. There's
- 23:34Speaker 4: like a short little beat where he's sort of getting ready, yes,
- 23:38Speaker 4: and he's doing some tight chee and he's flipping this
- 23:40Speaker 4: cane around, and like, I don't know, if I try
- 23:43Speaker 4: to flip a cane around like that, I'd end up
- 23:44Speaker 4: hurting myself.
- 23:45Speaker 2: But I had I bucketed that in like the bad
- 23:48Speaker 2: part of the movie, because it wouldn't matter if you
- 23:50Speaker 2: put Shaquille O'Neill or Dolly Parton in that suit. It
- 23:53Speaker 2: wouldn't matter, Like the results would be the exact same.
- 23:55Speaker 2: So him thinking that his yoga is a crucial part
- 23:58Speaker 2: of surviving this bear attack is just ridiculous.
- 24:01Speaker 5: I think he was just getting limbers that he could
- 24:03Speaker 5: get into the suit, which was no small task in
- 24:05Speaker 5: and of itself.
- 24:07Speaker 4: Well, and he was also getting ready to face down
- 24:09Speaker 4: at Grizzly Barry. He might have been just psyching himself up,
- 24:12Speaker 4: getting the mental game strang.
- 24:13Speaker 5: Now, I'll add that one of the parts of the
- 24:17Speaker 5: film that spoke to me as an outdoorsement is coming
- 24:21Speaker 5: up with the solution to every possible eventuality and then
- 24:25Speaker 5: realizing that if you do what you think you need
- 24:27Speaker 5: to do, you won't be able to undertake what you're
- 24:30Speaker 5: actually trying to accomplish. Yes, you know, I mean, I've
- 24:33Speaker 5: always thought about bringing X, Y and Z on my
- 24:36Speaker 5: backpacking trip, and I think he has a sort of
- 24:38Speaker 5: comically exaggerated version of that where he's not able to
- 24:41Speaker 5: move in his suit. I do have a quote.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Here Randall has eight pages of notes in front of him.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Jesus Christ, I can't walk. And then there's another one
- 24:55Speaker 5: where he says, oh, f quicksand F.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:00Speaker 5: I just I mean, I feel like that's I feel
- 25:03Speaker 5: like everybody has that voice within them that's like, take this,
- 25:06Speaker 5: add that you know you'll be able to solve the problem,
- 25:09Speaker 5: but at some point you just have to go out
- 25:11Speaker 5: there and do it.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Yeah. Two other parts I really liked. I trust that
- 25:14Speaker 2: the suit was indestructible. If he were to get in
- 25:16Speaker 2: a fight with a grizzly, he would survive without a
- 25:18Speaker 2: scratch on him. The other one was I liked when
- 25:20Speaker 2: telling his backstory about why he became obsessed with grizzly bears,
- 25:24Speaker 2: and he was talking about the encounter that he had
- 25:27Speaker 2: that he openly said that he shit and pissed himself. Yes,
- 25:30Speaker 2: during that encounter. That was That was a nice touch
- 25:32Speaker 2: on his part, good storytelling.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Yeah, they do ride into some big country, which I appreciated. Yeah,
- 25:39Speaker 4: you know, those boys weren't scared of being out in
- 25:42Speaker 4: the in some big time wild at.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Least it says in your band, at least what they.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Portrayed as as big mountains. But yeah, the fact that
- 25:53Speaker 4: he didn't think through like being able to move and
- 25:56Speaker 4: walk in the suit, and that his buddies didn't ment
- 26:00Speaker 4: and the director of the film, because it was a
- 26:04Speaker 4: real letdown, right, I mean, you're kind of getting hyped
- 26:07Speaker 4: up and then all of a sudden, it's like, oh,
- 26:09Speaker 4: I can't walk and we're going to abort I think.
- 26:13Speaker 5: I think the other part that really made this special
- 26:17Speaker 5: for me was once they're in camp and they can't
- 26:20Speaker 5: encounter a grizzly bear, they they all reveal that the
- 26:23Speaker 5: grizzly one of them says, the grizzly doesn't even have
- 26:26Speaker 5: to be there to get that edge. And there's the
- 26:29Speaker 5: guy describing the hand grenade game that they used to
- 26:33Speaker 5: play in Vietnam. Yeah, in Vietnam.
- 26:35Speaker 2: He went to Vietnam because he wanted to travel a little.
- 26:37Speaker 5: Bit for fun travel and adventure and to get a
- 26:41Speaker 5: feel for what it's like in combat. But several of
- 26:43Speaker 5: them all acknowledge that, like there's a there's a certain
- 26:47Speaker 5: thrill in putting themselves in this dangerous situation, but it
- 26:50Speaker 5: doesn't actually have to be dangerous. Just knowing that the
- 26:53Speaker 5: bears out there is enough for them. So yeah, that
- 26:56Speaker 5: that also spoke to something within me.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Yeah, the last time to say about it, you've already
- 27:02Speaker 4: touched on it. But the bowie knife stuff there at
- 27:05Speaker 4: the end, it really it sums it all up because
- 27:10Speaker 4: it goes away from one crazy thing and comes over
- 27:13Speaker 4: jumps over to another crazy thing, which is he's equally
- 27:15Speaker 4: crazy about. And he's even saying that his blokes are
- 27:19Speaker 4: laughing at him about his the way I mean he's
- 27:23Speaker 4: carrying this, you know, I mean that blade's got to
- 27:25Speaker 4: be ten inches and he's carrying it like not on
- 27:28Speaker 4: his hip like most as well, he's got different he's got.
- 27:33Speaker 5: Three, because there's one point where he's swinging two bowie
- 27:36Speaker 5: knives and I was like, oh, he's got the one
- 27:38Speaker 5: on his shoulder, but where did you have the second one?
- 27:40Speaker 5: Then I realized the other one's still in the shoulder sheath.
- 27:44Speaker 4: But he takes it so seriously that even had because
- 27:47Speaker 4: most people own a bowie knife like that, it ain't sharp, right,
- 27:50Speaker 4: it's like a toy. He had it so sharp that
- 27:52Speaker 4: he could actually kind of shave, which was impressive. And
- 27:56Speaker 4: then the fact that he could actually throw it, and
- 27:59Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know how he takes it took
- 28:01Speaker 4: but again in the film, it shows him sticking it
- 28:04Speaker 4: into a tree, but.
- 28:06Speaker 5: He acknowledges that in a defensive situation he would have
- 28:09Speaker 5: to be a certain distance to get the right rotation.
- 28:12Speaker 2: And the best part about that whole scene is he
- 28:14Speaker 2: justifies carrying knives by saying this isn't for bears. It's
- 28:17Speaker 2: because there's a lot of wackos out here, which is
- 28:20Speaker 2: just incredible. It'd be like if you know what a
- 28:22Speaker 2: terrorist was at a terrorist mixer, and he was like,
- 28:25Speaker 2: some of these people in here just don't have very
- 28:27Speaker 2: good morales, so it was it was perfect.
- 28:31Speaker 5: I thought good morals.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yo morals.
- 28:36Speaker 5: I thought the knife thing was also interesting because he said,
- 28:39Speaker 5: everybody laughs at me. But if I ever run into
- 28:42Speaker 5: a real mountain man, a real mountain man who knows
- 28:45Speaker 5: his salt, he's going to see these blades and think,
- 28:47Speaker 5: this guy knows what he's doing. So despite the reality
- 28:51Speaker 5: that he encounters, he has this imaginary scenario in his
- 28:54Speaker 5: mind that justifies what he's doing.
- 28:56Speaker 7: Right.
- 28:56Speaker 5: I thought it was a wonderful film. I enjoyed every
- 29:00Speaker 5: it of it. I probably hadn't seen it in ten
- 29:01Speaker 5: years or more. I don't remember when it was that
- 29:04Speaker 5: I first saw it, but it exceeded my my vague
- 29:07Speaker 5: memories of it. So I think it's I think it
- 29:10Speaker 5: would be an interesting film to pair with Grizzly Man
- 29:13Speaker 5: because they're two individuals, you know, one sort of a
- 29:16Speaker 5: tortured failed actor and the other one is this you know, dreamer,
- 29:20Speaker 5: and they both have very different relationships to Grizzly Bears,
- 29:24Speaker 5: and ultimately they both fail in their life's work.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I I like. One of my takeaways was that
- 29:30Speaker 2: the suit wasn't that impressive? He had said at one
- 29:33Speaker 2: point he's like, it's one hundred and forty seven pounds,
- 29:35Speaker 2: which is relatively light, and it's like, no, no, it's not.
- 29:37Speaker 2: And he couldn't you know, as you discussed earlier, Randall,
- 29:40Speaker 2: he couldn't take two steps in the thing, which was
- 29:42Speaker 2: an enormous flaw for trying to get attacked. And then
- 29:45Speaker 2: you know, another thing you touched on was just how
- 29:48Speaker 2: he doesn't like experts. He'll like reference experts, but it's
- 29:51Speaker 2: always in a very sarcastic way, like he's criticizing you
- 29:55Speaker 2: know what the experts think about grizzly bears.
- 29:58Speaker 5: Well, he did have Minnesota rubber on that suit, which
- 30:02Speaker 5: can stop a high speed drill. Then there's a layer
- 30:05Speaker 5: of titanium, then chain mail, then plastic, then more titanium
- 30:09Speaker 5: than more plastic. So I don't know, you can't get
- 30:12Speaker 5: all that stuff on and without going at least over
- 30:15Speaker 5: one hundred pounds. Yeah, honest thoughts.
- 30:18Speaker 4: I mean, in the end, do you guys feel that
- 30:21Speaker 4: the drive just did come from sort of just trying
- 30:23Speaker 4: to live up to his father's expectations.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, becaue he kind of says that he's like
- 30:28Speaker 2: that the ghost is always there, and he's like sort of.
- 30:32Speaker 2: His dad is almost a mythical person when he's talking
- 30:35Speaker 2: about you know, he created all this by hand with
- 30:38Speaker 2: a hatchet. You know this this was like good for
- 30:41Speaker 2: the community. It's it's he's trying to impress his dad,
- 30:44Speaker 2: who's not around. And I feel like he like kind
- 30:47Speaker 2: of straight up says that.
- 30:48Speaker 4: Yeah, but to the point that it drove him mad.
- 30:51Speaker 5: He says, in a revealing moment, my biggest fear is monotony,
- 30:56Speaker 5: the fear of being average. And I think if we
- 31:00Speaker 5: view his quest in that sense, he he achieved what
- 31:05Speaker 5: he's looking for because he is immortalized in this classic documentary.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Yeah, my final takeaway, watch the movie four out of
- 31:11Speaker 2: five stars. Any any outdoorsman would enjoy what you get
- 31:15Speaker 2: in like this seventy two minute watch free on two
- 31:17Speaker 2: B And then I think in other parts of the
- 31:19Speaker 2: world it's free on YouTube. It's not for Americans, but
- 31:23Speaker 2: two B is a free streaming app, and I think
- 31:25Speaker 2: that's where most of us consumed to that. All right, Phil,
- 31:30Speaker 2: we are about halfway through the show. Here, give us
- 31:32Speaker 2: some listener feedback. What do the people have to say?
- 31:34Speaker 6: Yeah, just in regards to Project Grizzley, Ryan just says,
- 31:37Speaker 6: it's another day in Canada, Canadian, tell us what you think.
- 31:42Speaker 4: Is a Canadian iron Man?
- 31:45Speaker 6: Yes, Brandon says, and then different Ryan is asking, how
- 31:50Speaker 6: do we know what the movie will be for the
- 31:53Speaker 6: next episode. Wonder we do a movie.
- 31:55Speaker 2: The week before on media Radio here. I think it's
- 31:58Speaker 2: usually the last thing that is on the show. We
- 32:01Speaker 2: will tell you what movie you were reviewing. I think
- 32:04Speaker 2: we don't have another movie review for two more weeks,
- 32:07Speaker 2: and I think we already decided on that when it's
- 32:09Speaker 2: going to be Escanaba into Moonlight, which I've never seen.
- 32:12Speaker 2: I'm sure that Yanni has probably seen it twenty five.
- 32:14Speaker 5: I've never seen it, Okay, but this was a highly
- 32:17Speaker 5: requested film.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Yes, and we will always give you a one week
- 32:21Speaker 2: warning about what we're going to watch, and we'll tell
- 32:23Speaker 2: you how you can watch it as well, so you
- 32:25Speaker 2: can join us in the Mediator Movie Club discussion.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:28Speaker 4: And I had to find out about that movie by
- 32:31Speaker 4: some hunting clients of mine from Missouri. I hadn't seen it.
- 32:36Speaker 4: I was, I don't know, twenty five years old, and
- 32:39Speaker 4: they rolled in one year and I had just quote
- 32:41Speaker 4: after quote from this movie and couldn't believe that I
- 32:43Speaker 4: hadn't seen it.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Some movies take on a larger life, like long after
- 32:47Speaker 2: you know they were relevant the first time. I think
- 32:49Speaker 2: this is one of them. The invention of social media
- 32:52Speaker 2: and you know, like the success of forty five second
- 32:55Speaker 2: clips in our daily life has really like put this
- 32:58Speaker 2: movie on a pedestal in a way that I don't
- 32:59Speaker 2: think it when it was released in nineteen ninety six.
- 33:02Speaker 5: I think that's fair.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Fill any other feedback at this portion of the show.
- 33:06Speaker 4: Oh yeah, we.
- 33:07Speaker 6: Got some feedback. Josh says that you look like Teddy Roosevelt.
- 33:11Speaker 6: You should be Teddy for Halloween. Okay, Yeah, Leandre was
- 33:15Speaker 6: chiming in all the way from Brazil. You just listened
- 33:18Speaker 6: to the last episode of mediater Trivia and heard about
- 33:20Speaker 6: Randall's fishing. I'm guessing your your golf course fish.
- 33:23Speaker 5: It must have been that big fish. I caught word
- 33:26Speaker 5: spreading and this fantastic.
- 33:29Speaker 2: They have a peacock bass as their profile picture.
- 33:32Speaker 4: Yeah, and that caught it out of a golf course pond,
- 33:35Speaker 4: four and.
- 33:35Speaker 5: A half pounder.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Yes, we did, Yanni.
- 33:38Speaker 4: You should have had some kids with you, and we
- 33:41Speaker 4: did in college them fish.
- 33:43Speaker 2: We'd let them fish.
- 33:45Speaker 6: I'll find your photo here, Yanny's telling us how he
- 33:48Speaker 6: real feels Barrel. Does Spenser actually work or just make
- 33:52Speaker 6: up games for everyone that Metior to play instead of
- 33:54Speaker 6: actually getting real work done? Take this lightheartedly.
- 33:56Speaker 2: You guys are the best, Uh that that is my
- 33:58Speaker 2: work here?
- 33:59Speaker 4: Yeah, and he's very good at it.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Thank you, Phil.

- 34:04Speaker 6: a trivia component to media radio in the future.
- 34:07Speaker 10: I'm going to add to that because Phil is too modest.
- 34:10Speaker 10: There are tons of people shouting you out today, Phil,
- 34:13Speaker 10: but someone had suggested that Phil should host a live
- 34:16Speaker 10: trivia pop culture and movie related.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Yes, So one of our future segments. I think it'll
- 34:21Speaker 2: be a day when we've got like a Brody Steve,
- 34:24Speaker 2: maybe a Yannie or Cal here, We're going to do
- 34:26Speaker 2: Phil's trivia, which you're going to be pop culture related
- 34:30Speaker 2: questions and we're going to find out just how little
- 34:33Speaker 2: these boys know about what's happening in the world of
- 34:36Speaker 2: sports and Hollywood and cinema and TV. And it's going
- 34:41Speaker 2: to be very satisfying.
- 34:42Speaker 5: Let's far up that Phil camp for a minute. That
- 34:45Speaker 5: come on, Hey, Popular Demand.
- 34:48Speaker 4: I see you guys shouting out in the chat. I
- 34:50Speaker 4: appreciate you. I see you.
- 34:51Speaker 6: There are dozens of us. Keep fighting the good fight.
- 34:55Speaker 6: You're You're worthwhile. Don't let anyone tell you other way.
- 34:57Speaker 5: The philistines that's right.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Anything else for now?
- 35:03Speaker 6: Phil, I think that's it for now, But keep chiming
- 35:05Speaker 6: in with some questions because we're gonna do another round
- 35:06Speaker 6: of Q and A at the end of the show.
- 35:08Speaker 6: So if you have any questions for the boys, put
- 35:10Speaker 6: him in the live chat please.
- 35:11Speaker 5: All right?
- 35:11Speaker 2: Moving on, our next segment is One Minute Fishing. Do
- 35:16Speaker 2: I feel lucky?
- 35:18Speaker 4: We'll do you, Punk, go ahead, make my cast.
- 35:25Speaker 2: One Minute Fishing is where we go live to someone
- 35:27Speaker 2: who's fishing and they have one minute to catch a
- 35:30Speaker 2: fish and if they're successful, we'll make a five hundred
- 35:32Speaker 2: dollars donation to a conservation group. This week, our angler
- 35:36Speaker 2: is Pat Dirkin who's on Lake Cascade in Idaho and
- 35:40Speaker 2: he's fishing for a donation to Muskies Ink. Pat. Welcome
- 35:44Speaker 2: to the show.
- 35:45Speaker 3: Hey Spencer. Good to hear from you.
- 35:47Speaker 4: Pat.
- 35:48Speaker 2: How is the fishing bent so far? I take it
- 35:50Speaker 2: you've been on the water for most of the morning
- 35:52Speaker 2: so far.
- 35:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I got to show you what we got so far.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Okay, Pat is going to what I assume as.
- 36:00Speaker 4: A live whoa, I ain't no live well.
- 36:04Speaker 2: He has got a live well of a ton of
- 36:09Speaker 2: jumbo jump in there. These all look like the thirteen
- 36:12Speaker 2: fourteen inches that have shoulders on them. That's when you
- 36:16Speaker 2: have a jumble perch, when they start to develop shoulders, Pat,
- 36:19Speaker 2: what have you been doing out there on Cascade Leg
- 36:21Speaker 2: to catch all these fish?
- 36:24Speaker 11: I give all the credit to my guide out here,
- 36:26Speaker 11: Chris Webber. Chris is a fellow Wisconsin night he's been
- 36:30Speaker 11: guiding here. I gotta tell you a spencer. One of
- 36:32Speaker 11: my funny things. I think it's funny if people ask
- 36:36Speaker 11: me all the time, why do you go fishing in
- 36:38Speaker 11: Idaho and you got perching?
- 36:39Speaker 3: Wiscon Now?
- 36:41Speaker 11: I think Chris Webber here, he didn't just come here
- 36:44Speaker 11: fishing once. He actually moved here from Wisconsin because of
- 36:48Speaker 11: these jumbles.
- 36:49Speaker 2: M Chris tell us about Chris tell us about the
- 36:54Speaker 2: tactics you guys are using out on the water today.
- 36:57Speaker 12: Well, right now, you've been throwing d rig and blade baits,
- 37:00Speaker 12: a couple of different different lures.
- 37:03Speaker 11: We got we got nedrig right in front of your heren.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Can we get a close up with that I've never
- 37:08Speaker 4: heard of that, Edric.
- 37:11Speaker 12: Yeah, it's just basically a chunk of It's like a
- 37:14Speaker 12: three inch chunk of plastic.
- 37:17Speaker 1: And my favorite blade bait.
- 37:19Speaker 12: You know, this is the Weber blade that I helped design.
- 37:22Speaker 4: Works really good.
- 37:23Speaker 12: We've had a great morning so far. We got thirty
- 37:25Speaker 12: fish in a live well and hopefully Pat can put
- 37:28Speaker 12: it together in one minute.
- 37:29Speaker 1: It's a lot of pressure, but.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Okay, Chris is sharing all his secrets with us. Now
- 37:34Speaker 2: we're going to see if Pat Dirkin can put it
- 37:36Speaker 2: into action. Pat, your one minute of fishing starts when
- 37:40Speaker 2: you make your first cast.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Go ahead, all right, here we go right there, Bet.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Now we have no idea on the lake where they
- 37:51Speaker 2: are at. There is a lot of overcast back there,
- 37:53Speaker 2: and Pat has just made his very first cast.
- 37:57Speaker 5: The music is a nice touch film did we get
- 38:00Speaker 5: new music?
- 38:01Speaker 4: Looks like a pretty slow retrieve, a little jig.
- 38:05Speaker 2: He's he's bouncing it off the bottom on his reere.
- 38:08Speaker 4: The water must not be very deep. Oh he's frozen. No,
- 38:14Speaker 4: oh no, come.
- 38:16Speaker 8: On, ok.
- 38:21Speaker 4: Oh, I feel a strike coming, Pat.
- 38:24Speaker 2: You have thirty seconds left.
- 38:27Speaker 4: Work at Pat work it feel it.
- 38:30Speaker 2: As a reminder, we have yet to have a successful
- 38:32Speaker 2: angler for one minute.
- 38:34Speaker 5: Fishing fishes on fishes on ladies. Christ, my god.
- 38:43Speaker 4: That is a good rod. Then for a perch, the
- 38:47Speaker 4: net scoop is happening. It's at the butt.
- 38:54Speaker 5: That's a that's a moment and meeting radio live history.
- 38:59Speaker 4: One cat is all.
- 39:00Speaker 2: It to a beauty and it's a keeper that that
- 39:03Speaker 2: is a jumbo perch of jumbo perch. Pat, well done,
- 39:08Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 39:09Speaker 5: Sounds like it's time to head back to the boat ramp.
- 39:12Speaker 5: You've accomplished what you set out to do.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Pat is our first, our first ever angler to be
- 39:18Speaker 2: successful on one minute fishing, and that means we're going
- 39:21Speaker 2: to make a five hundred dollars donation on behalf of
- 39:24Speaker 2: meat Eater and Pat to muskies.
- 39:26Speaker 5: Ink.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Now, Pat, tell us about that one minute. How did
- 39:29Speaker 2: you think it was gonna happen?
- 39:32Speaker 11: I had about an eighty percent chance. I figured we're
- 39:35Speaker 11: really about eight o'clock. Yeah, I'll show you a secret here.
- 39:40Speaker 11: Chris has been picking on me all morning fishing with
- 39:43Speaker 11: up my old Mitchell three hundred in nineteen seventy. Wow,
- 39:49Speaker 11: I let Chris tried it earlier. You tried to give
- 39:52Speaker 11: a few cranks. He says, so you like this, huh
- 39:59Speaker 11: Mitchell three hundreds. These guys think they're old school, but
- 40:04Speaker 11: I use it because they work. I've been using this
- 40:06Speaker 11: forty years years old. But anyway, that's the secret to
- 40:11Speaker 11: my success. But also Chris also picked on me because
- 40:15Speaker 11: I'm using eight pound fulment instead of a good braid.
- 40:19Speaker 3: But you'll be But yeah, this is exciting. Thanks for
- 40:23Speaker 3: having me on.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Well done, Pat, the chat is very excited right now.
- 40:26Speaker 2: I've seen people call you a hero, a legend, and just.
- 40:32Speaker 4: Someone said all it took was to have a Wisconsin
- 40:34Speaker 4: night on there could get it get it done.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Great job, Pat. Let us know how the rest of
- 40:41Speaker 2: your day goes. We will check in with you after
- 40:44Speaker 2: the show.
- 40:45Speaker 5: Thank you, Pat.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Thanks.
- 40:47Speaker 4: Pat's having quite the quite the couple of weeks. He's
- 40:51Speaker 4: coming right on the heels off of the heels of
- 40:53Speaker 4: a successful elk hunt in Idaho.
- 40:56Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 40:56Speaker 2: I don't think he was even planning on fishing, but
- 40:58Speaker 2: he tagged out on like the morning or something and
- 41:01Speaker 2: he had to fill some other time in Idaho.
- 41:03Speaker 4: Well, he's so into it. His wife, I think, is
- 41:05Speaker 4: flying out to fish for another week of just week
- 41:09Speaker 4: of perch fishing. I'm about to stop buy pass places
- 41:12Speaker 4: for a fish fry when I'm in Wisconsin's delightful?
- 41:15Speaker 2: What do I love?
- 41:16Speaker 7: Pat?
- 41:18Speaker 2: All right? Moving on, Our next segment is Meat Eaters
- 41:22Speaker 2: Show and Tell.
- 41:23Speaker 4: Mannie the Showtun Mannie the Show.
- 41:32Speaker 5: We can still see celebrating on the boat. He just
- 41:35Speaker 5: did a huge fist box.
- 41:38Speaker 9: Brought a rock?
- 41:39Speaker 4: What else did you?
- 41:44Speaker 2: Phil?
- 41:44Speaker 4: Thank you? We can do tennes of Phil.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Now.
- 41:51Speaker 4: Phil.
- 41:52Speaker 2: He said in the sounder there that I brought a rock?
- 41:55Speaker 2: What else would you expect? And Phil was.
- 41:57Speaker 4: Right, No, I truly didn't know.
- 41:59Speaker 2: I brought a rock today for show and Talent. Show
- 42:02Speaker 2: and Tell is exactly what it sounds like. This is
- 42:04Speaker 2: like if you walked into an elementary school on Friday.
- 42:07Speaker 2: We're going to be showing you our our favorite knick
- 42:10Speaker 2: knacks from our home and then tell you about them.
- 42:11Speaker 2: So the first thing I'm gonna go first here this
- 42:14Speaker 2: in my hand. Phil, can you do a tight on
- 42:16Speaker 2: me at all?
- 42:17Speaker 6: To be You can do a single shot, but I
- 42:19Speaker 6: can't really zoom in here right now.
- 42:20Speaker 2: This is a dinosaur bone and I actually brought dinosaur
- 42:24Speaker 2: bones for you boys today. You can you can have
- 42:26Speaker 2: these one for Randall, one for Yanni and this this
- 42:30Speaker 2: is from a duck bill dinosaur. I found it on
- 42:33Speaker 2: the Montana Canada border.
- 42:35Speaker 5: Is it the official state dinosaur of Montana?
- 42:37Speaker 2: I don't know. I think there are a few types
- 42:40Speaker 2: of duck bills. This would be the official state dinosaur.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Is it the official state fossil.
- 42:46Speaker 5: I think it's an official dinosaur.
- 42:47Speaker 2: Okay, I found this.
- 42:48Speaker 4: We're in has something to say?
- 42:50Speaker 10: Oh no, I was just gonna say for our audio
- 42:51Speaker 10: only audience, can you describe and detail what it is?
- 42:54Speaker 4: Color? Looks like a rock to me, honestly, I think.
- 42:58Speaker 2: It looks like a bone. You can like, I don't know.
- 43:03Speaker 5: Marrow type structure.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Now, a lot of people would ask, how do you
- 43:07Speaker 2: know it's a dinosaur bone or how do you know
- 43:09Speaker 2: what kind of rock you're looking at? Now, with with
- 43:11Speaker 2: dinosaur bones and most fossilized bones in general, there's a
- 43:14Speaker 2: really cool test you could do. And this is not
- 43:16Speaker 2: a trick. It's called the lick test. Now I'll show
- 43:19Speaker 2: you what I mean by the lick test. If you
- 43:22Speaker 2: take a fossilized dinal bone and put it on your tongue,
- 43:25Speaker 2: it will stick to your tongue as though you have
- 43:28Speaker 2: just licked like a frozen flagpole at recess in the winter.
- 43:31Speaker 2: So I'm gonna show you what I mean. I have
- 43:33Speaker 2: this dinal bone. It's about the size of a quarter.
- 43:36Speaker 4: The porous or the non it helps.
- 43:38Speaker 2: It helps if you lick the porous side. So I'm
- 43:40Speaker 2: gonna press I'm gonna press this against my tongue and
- 43:43Speaker 2: you can see what I mean by the lick test.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 43:49Speaker 5: Oh wow, screen grab that, Phil What what.
- 43:53Speaker 4: Is it that makes it do that?
- 43:57Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 43:58Speaker 2: I don't know what the properties of it that makes
- 44:00Speaker 2: it do it. But if you're out in a place
- 44:02Speaker 2: where you could legally collect fossils like this, like you know,
- 44:06Speaker 2: a private ranch in Montana like I was on, and
- 44:09Speaker 2: you find something like that could be a dinosaur bone.
- 44:11Speaker 2: One way you'll tell is do the lick test. Johanni Randa.
- 44:14Speaker 2: You you boys do the lick test. It's and it
- 44:16Speaker 2: worked for you. Hanging right on their tongue. Yeah, the
- 44:19Speaker 2: lick test. That's that's how you declare if something is
- 44:22Speaker 2: a fossilized bone or not. That is my item today.
- 44:27Speaker 6: And also a hot tip off to so that's that's free.
- 44:31Speaker 2: That's a free one. Hot Yanni, what did you bring
- 44:34Speaker 2: for show and tell.
- 44:36Speaker 4: I brought this side jar of elk teeth. Elk Ivory's.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Looks like there's about a pint's worth of ivories in there.
- 44:48Speaker 4: I'd say it's more like a half pint, like a cup.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:55Speaker 4: Once I saw actually a pint of elk Ivory's, I
- 44:59Speaker 4: was like, damn, dude, that's a lot of elk Ivors.
- 45:02Speaker 1: You know.
- 45:03Speaker 4: And the guy was very It was Donnie the wild
- 45:05Speaker 4: Man McConnell, which I've talked about him before. He was
- 45:09Speaker 4: a guy I used to guide with. He was haven't
- 45:12Speaker 4: I told you guys about him?
- 45:13Speaker 2: Never heard of?
- 45:13Speaker 5: No, it sounds fascinating.
- 45:15Speaker 4: Guide in a leather jacket that I have. He customs
- 45:19Speaker 4: sewed his own pockets into for his cigarettes lighter forty
- 45:22Speaker 4: four magnum, and his bunk had no sleeping bag on it.
- 45:27Speaker 4: He would literally sit down on his bunk and finish
- 45:30Speaker 4: off his last Budweiser, which was, you know, probably into
- 45:34Speaker 4: the double digits of the evening, put his cigarette out,
- 45:37Speaker 4: take his boots off some nights, and then lay down
- 45:40Speaker 4: with those leather jackets still on, sometimes with a pillow
- 45:42Speaker 4: or not, and in the morning he'd sit up light
- 45:45Speaker 4: up a cigarette and start drinking cokes, and you go
- 45:47Speaker 4: about half of the day with cokes and then the
- 45:49Speaker 4: other half the day with Budweisers. Anyways, he had a
- 45:51Speaker 4: full jar of these.
- 45:52Speaker 2: They don't make them like him anymore.
- 45:53Speaker 4: No, no, And I thought, man, I'll to start This
- 45:57Speaker 4: thing is roughly the size of pint jar. How long
- 45:59Speaker 4: will it take to fill up a pint jar of
- 46:00Speaker 4: elk ivories? I feel like I don't know if they're shrinking,
- 46:04Speaker 4: but I feel like I put a couple sometimes four
- 46:07Speaker 4: in here every year, and it's almost like my little
- 46:09Speaker 4: pile gets small.
- 46:10Speaker 2: I mean, it's gonna have to check your daughter's room
- 46:12Speaker 2: see if they're thiefing. I'm taking them to sh.
- 46:14Speaker 4: No, no, no, well I doubt it, but I'm just
- 46:17Speaker 4: saying that it takes a lot. Do you want to
- 46:19Speaker 4: take a guess? I countmber when I got in here.
- 46:21Speaker 4: Do you want to take a guess how many pairs
- 46:24Speaker 4: are in here?
- 46:25Speaker 2: I would say fifteen?
- 46:28Speaker 5: Oh, I was going to say fourteen. Are we doing
- 46:30Speaker 5: prices right? Rules?
- 46:31Speaker 2: Oh no, no, no, what is it? Thirty two pairs?
- 46:34Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, yeah, and there's sixty four teeth in here.
- 46:40Speaker 2: To get one cup of yeah, thirty thirty two.
- 46:43Speaker 4: And if you can, you know that they used to,
- 46:45Speaker 4: you know, the indigenous of this land mass used to
- 46:50Speaker 4: have shirts that had were completely sewed, you know, with
- 46:54Speaker 4: the whole front of elk ivories. I mean it must
- 46:56Speaker 4: have been hundreds of animals that they use.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Can they identify any of the ivories in there? Like
- 47:01Speaker 2: I know this one was from this bowl.
- 47:02Speaker 1: No.
- 47:03Speaker 4: I've thought about, you know, marking them like Steve does
- 47:05Speaker 4: with a little these little white out and then write
- 47:08Speaker 4: something on there. But I don't have many collections at home.
- 47:12Speaker 4: I'm not a big collector, but this is something that
- 47:15Speaker 4: I do collect. I don't know, it's just a jar
- 47:18Speaker 4: of teeth really, what you think about it. I probably
- 47:21Speaker 4: won't be grabbing it in a fire, you know, and
- 47:23Speaker 4: running out of the house with it. But it's one
- 47:26Speaker 4: of the few things that I collect, my little jar vivories.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Very nice addition to Eat Eaters Show and Tell, Randa,
- 47:31Speaker 2: what do you got for us today?
- 47:33Speaker 5: Well, you know, for the young folks out there, this
- 47:37Speaker 5: is a point and shoot camera. Prior to the age
- 47:40Speaker 5: of the smartphone, you used to carry around one of these.
- 47:42Speaker 2: And about the size of a deck of cards.
- 47:44Speaker 5: Yeah, about the size of a deck of cards. This
- 47:46Speaker 5: is the Olympus style is tough. And I was organizing
- 47:50Speaker 5: my garage and found this camera, an ancient memory, and
- 47:55Speaker 5: I thought that I would bring it in because that
- 47:57Speaker 5: was the second time I've found this camera. The first
- 48:00Speaker 5: time was after I shot my first bear in Alaska.
- 48:03Speaker 5: Someone took a photo of me and that person if
- 48:06Speaker 5: the Delamire and Hopkins crew is still in there, that
- 48:08Speaker 5: person is Neil Potter, and we brought we brought the
- 48:12Speaker 5: bear back to the boat and he says, dude, I
- 48:16Speaker 5: don't have your camera. And I spent the rest of
- 48:20Speaker 5: the summer looking for that camera. And I was just
- 48:22Speaker 5: cutting down Devil's Club and all kinds of things. Couldn't
- 48:25Speaker 5: find it, got a metal detector, couldn't find it.
- 48:29Speaker 2: This was important.
- 48:31Speaker 5: I wanted a photo. And so in any event, I
- 48:35Speaker 5: went back the Falling May to guide another summer. And
- 48:38Speaker 5: when you go back to Alaska in the springtime, nothing's
- 48:41Speaker 5: grown up. It's all just dead. So I walked right
- 48:43Speaker 5: back there found this thing. The waterproof and freeze proof
- 48:47Speaker 5: claims are accurate, because Phil, we have that photo.
- 48:52Speaker 2: Hey, look at that very nice.
- 48:55Speaker 5: And and there's a second part to my show and
- 48:58Speaker 5: tell you. No, that's just how my beard grows.
- 49:04Speaker 4: Ohio.
- 49:04Speaker 5: Actually in that photo shirt, you're like really going for
- 49:08Speaker 5: the look. That's a denim shirt. Used to wear them
- 49:10Speaker 5: all the time. That's a Delmere and Hopkins hat. Shout
- 49:13Speaker 5: out Delmire and Hopkins again. And that bear was killed
- 49:16Speaker 5: with a four hundred and thirty grain hard cast bullet
- 49:19Speaker 5: loaded by HSMMO out of the Bitterroot Valley. And because
- 49:23Speaker 5: I didn't think I had a photo of it, I
- 49:26Speaker 5: got my first shoulder mount.
- 49:28Speaker 2: Okay, and he brought that the.
- 49:29Speaker 5: Bear right here. This is the only this is the
- 49:32Speaker 5: only way I shoulder mount a bear of this size
- 49:35Speaker 5: because I thought I didn't have a photo, so that
- 49:37Speaker 5: was an expensive, unnecessary.
- 49:40Speaker 4: The picture made him look a lot bigger.
- 49:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, it's kind of scruffed up.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Where is that bear mount in your home?
- 49:47Speaker 5: It's just sitting out in the garage. Was actually very
- 49:49Speaker 5: close to where I found this camera. So usually we
- 49:52Speaker 5: have him in a position of prominence and he wears
- 49:55Speaker 5: a Santa Claus hat in the wintertime. That's my show
- 50:00Speaker 5: and tell.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Show and Tell, just Laris to Phil Right, I'm gonna
- 50:04Speaker 2: bring rocks every single time. Now it was fun. Johnny
- 50:09Speaker 2: brought sixty four things to show and tell, Randall brought
- 50:12Speaker 2: three things to show and tell, and I also brought
- 50:14Speaker 2: three things to show and tell. We'll see if we
- 50:15Speaker 2: can top it next time. Moving on. Joining us on
- 50:19Speaker 2: the line next is professional chef Yea Vang. He just
- 50:22Speaker 2: opened his second restaurant in Minneapolis and is here to
- 50:25Speaker 2: talk to us about monk cooking. Yeah, welcome to the show.
- 50:29Speaker 1: What's up, dudes?
- 50:32Speaker 4: Good good, First thing, the whole the whole Linck test
- 50:37Speaker 4: you guys are doing.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Uh huh dude. I got caught up in that one,
- 50:41Speaker 1: but it was in a van and all I guess
- 50:46Speaker 1: that's a fossil weird dude. It's like, come into my van.
- 50:51Speaker 1: I'm like okayn.
- 50:54Speaker 2: And they got him. First thing, now, the Minnesota State
- 50:58Speaker 2: Fair that that just recently ended, its second only to
- 51:00Speaker 2: the Texas State Fair as the biggest state fair in
- 51:03Speaker 2: the country. Did you go this year?
- 51:06Speaker 1: Yeah, we have a shop, so it was there. This
- 51:09Speaker 1: is our third year there. The asterisk on the Minnesota
- 51:12Speaker 1: State Fair being the second overall in the nation is
- 51:15Speaker 1: because the Texas State Fair is thirty days and the
- 51:18Speaker 1: Minnesota State Fair is only twelve. It's not a little
- 51:21Speaker 1: unfair there. But this year we had almost two million
- 51:24Speaker 1: people come through in less than about twelve days. Wow.
- 51:27Speaker 2: Okay, what what was the best thing you ate there
- 51:29Speaker 2: that wasn't your own food?
- 51:32Speaker 1: Man? You know, you can do all the fry stuff
- 51:35Speaker 1: if you want, you know, But for me, man, it's
- 51:41Speaker 1: gotta be friend. Dude. I have so many friends there,
- 51:46Speaker 1: they're gonna be so mad at me.
- 51:48Speaker 4: Anyway.
- 51:49Speaker 1: Okay, here here like my trying true no, no, no, no,
- 51:52Speaker 1: this is my try and truth. There's a place there
- 51:54Speaker 1: where it's just like a beef tips kind of place.
- 51:57Speaker 1: I forget the name of it, but basically you get
- 51:59Speaker 1: a big mashed potato and you just get some surmo
- 52:02Speaker 1: and tips and then fried onions and I mean it's
- 52:05Speaker 1: just his you know. So it's one of my feelings.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Now, Can people find you? Can people find you? At
- 52:10Speaker 2: the State Fair most years?
- 52:12Speaker 1: Yeah, we're there every year. So state fairs it's kind
- 52:15Speaker 1: of like run like the mob. So blood in, blood out.
- 52:17Speaker 1: So once you get in, once you get in, to
- 52:20Speaker 1: get out, it's like you gotta you know, there's some stuff.
- 52:23Speaker 1: I kid you not. In about twenty to twenty five years,
- 52:27Speaker 1: Netflix is gonna do a show call like the Truth
- 52:29Speaker 1: behind the Minnesota State Fair, right, and they're gonna interview us,
- 52:33Speaker 1: and then I'm gonna get really I'm gonna tell you
- 52:35Speaker 1: got some secrets, you know.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Okay, looking forward to that. Currently we're doing the Meat
- 52:39Speaker 2: Eater Tailgate Tour, but we think next year Randall and
- 52:41Speaker 2: I were talking it should be the Meat Eater State
- 52:43Speaker 2: Fair to go to Minnesota, Texas the best state fairs in.
- 52:47Speaker 1: The country is the most ridiculous thing ever, you know,
- 52:50Speaker 1: Like I talk to my friends with aren't a brown
- 52:51Speaker 1: from this area and they're like, that's cute. You guys
- 52:54Speaker 1: have this like County Fair. I'm like, bro, you know,
- 52:55Speaker 1: counter Fair. But one of the Saturdays in one day,
- 53:01Speaker 1: at twelve hour day, we had two hundred and fifty
- 53:04Speaker 1: eight thousand people come through.
- 53:06Speaker 4: Wow.
- 53:07Speaker 2: Now you tell us where you're standing today? I see
- 53:09Speaker 2: an open flame behind you.
- 53:12Speaker 1: Yeah. So we're at our brand new restaurant v n I.
- 53:15Speaker 1: So this is we have an open kitchen right here.
- 53:18Speaker 1: Our friend Ben we makes these incredible grill called grill Works.
- 53:22Speaker 1: So there's these grills that you know, goes up and down,
- 53:24Speaker 1: and we got this really cool setup back here The
- 53:27Speaker 1: wood we use is Minnesota oak so it's from this
- 53:30Speaker 1: guy name He's got place here. It's called Paul's Firewood.
- 53:34Speaker 1: I thought it was Paul's hardwood. If you type in
- 53:37Speaker 1: google Paul's hardwood, something else comes up. So I found
- 53:40Speaker 1: out that really quick. But Minnesota oak man. It's it's
- 53:43Speaker 1: just everything we cook from, you know, it's a very
- 53:46Speaker 1: cooking from wood fire is a very traditional thing with
- 53:49Speaker 1: a lot of among food, especially with our people growing
- 53:53Speaker 1: up in the mountains of Laos And this is how
- 53:56Speaker 1: my father and his father and his father's before him,
- 53:58Speaker 1: this is how they cook. So we're really excited about
- 54:01Speaker 1: using this.
- 54:01Speaker 2: And is the flame just for looks because you're on
- 54:04Speaker 2: the podcast today? Are you actually cooking something right now?
- 54:07Speaker 1: No, I'm actually cooking something. So you know what's really
- 54:09Speaker 1: cool is we do the show on Outdoor called Ferrell
- 54:13Speaker 1: and I got to meet my buddy Chris, who owns
- 54:15Speaker 1: a broken arrow ranch and so down in Texas. And
- 54:18Speaker 1: they so they they do access theer, they do bore,
- 54:22Speaker 1: they do everything. So it's like it's almost like this
- 54:24Speaker 1: traveling butcher shop they have. So we get our wild
- 54:27Speaker 1: boar from them. So we're gonna make so we're making
- 54:30Speaker 1: like a wild boar monk sausage. So basically it's wild boar,
- 54:34Speaker 1: and we threw a little bit of belly in there
- 54:35Speaker 1: because we want a little bit more fat, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, fish, sauce,
- 54:39Speaker 1: chili oil, salt, and pepper. And what I love about
- 54:43Speaker 1: using wild boar is the original hogs or boards that
- 54:48Speaker 1: was used in the mountains allows here in America. The
- 54:50Speaker 1: wild boar here is the closest we get. And what's
- 54:53Speaker 1: so special about this dish is that it is the
- 54:55Speaker 1: closest that I'll get to be making almost the ex
- 55:00Speaker 1: exact same among sausage that my father and my grandfather
- 55:04Speaker 1: passed away during the war and I never met him.
- 55:06Speaker 1: This is what they did back in the old country
- 55:08Speaker 1: and the mountains alots, which a couple of years I
- 55:10Speaker 1: got chances to go. A couple of years ago, I
- 55:11Speaker 1: got a chance to go visit. So so it's really
- 55:14Speaker 1: special and it's you know, man, it's so cool and
- 55:17Speaker 1: be able to share that with my father, and we
- 55:19Speaker 1: were talking about this, and you know how a lot
- 55:21Speaker 1: of the you know, the hogs they had up there
- 55:24Speaker 1: a wild so it was they would go and hunt
- 55:26Speaker 1: it and then they break it down. The whole village
- 55:29Speaker 1: will call me to break it down, they you know,
- 55:31Speaker 1: and they put all the aromatics in it. And then
- 55:34Speaker 1: to even eat sausage, you know, when you're in these
- 55:37Speaker 1: poor villages is a special treat. So what they would
- 55:39Speaker 1: do is they were starting.
- 55:41Speaker 4: Yeah, they had to make their own casings from those
- 55:44Speaker 4: hogs too, I imagine.
- 55:46Speaker 1: Well yeah, I mean they don't make the casing. They
- 55:49Speaker 1: pull the cases out, which is you know what I'm saying. Yeah,
- 55:52Speaker 1: so well, but the but the fast way of doing
- 55:54Speaker 1: it right, it's just so what we did is, you know,
- 55:57Speaker 1: we we mix it up and everything. And then Dad
- 56:00Speaker 1: was just like, you know, they make just little patties,
- 56:03Speaker 1: little patties, yep, and you kind of just like almost
- 56:06Speaker 1: like burger patties. And then what they would have is
- 56:10Speaker 1: a little like a little like rack in which I'm
- 56:13Speaker 1: putting it on right now, but you put a patty,
- 56:16Speaker 1: you put it on a rack like this, yeah, so
- 56:21Speaker 1: you know, and then just throw it over the fire.
- 56:24Speaker 1: And the cool thing about this, and what my father
- 56:27Speaker 1: taught me was that it was always on the go, right.
- 56:30Speaker 1: So you're you're out, you're hunting, and sometimes you got
- 56:33Speaker 1: to walk hours and hours and then you hunt. I mean,
- 56:35Speaker 1: you guys know what I'm talking about. And right away
- 56:38Speaker 1: you can break the meat down. You bring in a
- 56:40Speaker 1: little aromatics, you do that, you start a little fire,
- 56:43Speaker 1: you use bamboos, and then you would make a little
- 56:46Speaker 1: rack like this, you put it on. You bring some
- 56:48Speaker 1: sticky rice with you, and that was your lunch, you know.
- 56:51Speaker 2: And so go ahead, he just put these patties on
- 56:54Speaker 2: the grill. How long are they going to be there?
- 56:56Speaker 1: Now? So they'll probably be there about five minutes on
- 57:00Speaker 1: each side, and well, you know, we'll kind of flip
- 57:02Speaker 1: them and go. But for you guys will go real
- 57:05Speaker 1: close right now. We don't do we don't do fake
- 57:10Speaker 1: TV cooking here. It's real, you know.
- 57:13Speaker 2: Yeah, well Burn, what makes your newest restaurant different than
- 57:17Speaker 2: everything else that's in Minneapolis.
- 57:20Speaker 1: Well, you know, I don't really think that we're doing anything.
- 57:23Speaker 1: We really new. What I really do tell people is
- 57:25Speaker 1: the work. The name VNI, which is the name of
- 57:28Speaker 1: the restaurant. It's named after the refugee camp that our
- 57:31Speaker 1: family came through. I was born there, my siblings were
- 57:34Speaker 1: born there, my parents, my parents seventy seven. They got
- 57:36Speaker 1: married at seventy eight and in eighty eight we ended
- 57:39Speaker 1: up here in Saint Paul, Minnesota. So so Va I
- 57:42Speaker 1: host for seventy five and ninety two, hosted about ninety
- 57:46Speaker 1: thousand refugee after the war. When I say war, I
- 57:48Speaker 1: mean Vietnam War, which is which you know, it's in
- 57:51Speaker 1: northern Laos, so not a lot of people knew about it.
- 57:53Speaker 1: I was actually called the Secret War, and it was.
- 57:56Speaker 1: It was a war fought by the American government and
- 57:58Speaker 1: the CIA. At the age of twelve and thirteen, he
- 58:02Speaker 1: joined up, so he was part of the militia that
- 58:04Speaker 1: fought for the Americans. And so after that, you know,
- 58:07Speaker 1: the Americans pulled out. There's all these refugees, thousands of
- 58:10Speaker 1: thousands people came through and so this restaurant here Vna,
- 58:13Speaker 1: we just I just felt we went. It's a love
- 58:15Speaker 1: letter in my mom and dad. You know, if you
- 58:16Speaker 1: guys get a chance to come down here, every piece
- 58:19Speaker 1: in this place has a memory, you know, dedicated to them.
- 58:24Speaker 1: It's an emblem of them, you know. I mean, you know,
- 58:26Speaker 1: you guys, you guys are hunters, you guys are fathers,
- 58:29Speaker 1: and you guys understand what it means to leave a legacy,
- 58:32Speaker 1: you know, and especially being a conservationist too, understanding of like,
- 58:36Speaker 1: let's we need to take care of something so we
- 58:38Speaker 1: can pass it down to the next generation. And for
- 58:40Speaker 1: among people, when we came to this country, we didn't
- 58:43Speaker 1: have any land, We didn't own anything. And what we
- 58:46Speaker 1: were able to put our parents and their parents were
- 58:48Speaker 1: able to pass down is their legacy. And for me,
- 58:51Speaker 1: as much as people you know, look at like land
- 58:53Speaker 1: and say, hey, this is my father's land, which is
- 58:55Speaker 1: his father's land, I look at it as like, this
- 58:57Speaker 1: is my father's legacy which was my grandfather as I see,
- 59:00Speaker 1: which was his father's I see. And we get to
- 59:02Speaker 1: do that, man, we get to do that with food
- 59:04Speaker 1: and and the way that we make food and stuff
- 59:05Speaker 1: like that. So super exciting.
- 59:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd say that if that backstory makes it different
- 59:09Speaker 2: than everything else that's that's in Minneapolis now. Yanni said
- 59:13Speaker 2: he might be passing through in a few weeks and
- 59:15Speaker 2: and he's real interested and stopping. What what would you
- 59:17Speaker 2: recommend Yanni order when he's there?
- 59:19Speaker 1: You know, I mean, you know, I'll believe it when
- 59:21Speaker 1: I see it, you know, like big big superstars like Yanni,
- 59:26Speaker 1: and you know, it's one of those I'll call you,
- 59:29Speaker 1: don't call me kind of I will. I will admit
- 59:32Speaker 1: caw came through here for an event and he, you know,
- 59:34Speaker 1: d m me and he like, you know, he's talking
- 59:36Speaker 1: to me like, you know, like he remembered me from
- 59:39Speaker 1: the from the podcast show. So well, thanks, buddy.
- 59:41Speaker 4: Uh do I need a reservation?
- 59:45Speaker 1: You know what I mean? If you want to pull
- 59:46Speaker 1: the celebrity thing that Steve does, you know, you get
- 59:49Speaker 1: your your agent, your people to call our people.
- 59:51Speaker 4: We'll set it all up. But I'm serious, can I
- 59:54Speaker 4: just show up? I'm asking for anybody, do you do
- 59:56Speaker 4: I need to do? They need a call ahead to
- 59:58Speaker 4: get a.
- 59:59Speaker 1: Were we are. We are very very blessed to have
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: right now being kind of newer, so we are kind
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: of booked out till like the end of October ish.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: But for you, buddy, I will, I will kick out
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: the Lieutenant governor.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: I'll be like, when Yanni is there, what should he order?
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: What do you recommend?
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: So hey, Yanni, you get here, man. It's all about
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: our grill, right, So we have some really great vegetables
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: coming off the grill, but we have this pork chop.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: It's a double cut pork chops right so that bad
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: boys about two pounds and that bone part that's that's
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: the baby back grip right there. And then you have
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: the tail end of the of the pork chop. There
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: is like the top part of the ballance. You got
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: that fat and you got that center cut, dude, I
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: go for that. I would also go for the fish.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: We have this fish and it's butterfly out grilled right
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: over the fire. You know. Get some sticky rice, you know,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: get some of our cocktails, you know, and stuff like that.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: So I would say, and then our crab fried rice. Man,
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: people have been killing about the that dry rice.
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: No, I'm gonna order one of each, and I'm gonna
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: bring my kid my well, one of my daughters is
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: coming with me to hunt, and so we'll stop in
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: for lunch on our way to camp.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: Yeah, if you come down here, make sure Casey comes
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: with you too, you know.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: Okay, Yeah, I'll bug him. Yeah, that'd be fun.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: He's been traveling being so cool, so he hasn't returned
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: any much. Type soon.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: Now, if somebody can't make it to your restaurant, but
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: they want to try some one cooking at home, can
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: you recommend like a meal that they start with and
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: what what ingredients should they have on hand?
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Yeah, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, shallots, fish, sauce, tai chilies. Those
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: are the basics. They're always around. Those are our.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: Oh no, we may have lunch there we go.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, my good, you're back.
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: You're back, yes, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: So lemon grash, ginger, garlic, shallots, fish, sauce, you know,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: thy chilies. Those are things around. Is kind of the
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: base of what we cook from. You know, I would
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: say too, is you can literally YouTube, Google, you can
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: do all that stuff right now. There's a lot of
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: great food content creator that you know will walk you
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: through the whole dish. Or a lot of vegetables, a
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: lot a lot of vegetables are people are agricultural people,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: so we get to use some really really cool So
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: my mom and dad actually has a farm that's like
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: almost ten acres and every season they grow all the
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: vegetables there and then you know, they give me a
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: call and we will pick it up. And so a
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: lot of our produced product that comes from them.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you're making us hungry. Now, if somebody wanted to
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: try your cooking, tell folks how they can find you
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: in Minnesota.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: So yeah, we're in Minneapolis. We have two locations, or
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: we have two restaurants, a Union Munk Kitchen which is
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: in Uptown, and then we have one in a food
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: hall in North Loop and that's more like you know,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: fast cash, sit down, you know, think, you know. And
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: then we have v NI which is in northeast here
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: and so we're here. We're also in a bunch of
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: the sporting stadium like the soccer stadium us Field with
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: the Vikings yuh twin stadium, and in the summer we
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: have what you call it, we'll have we have the
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: stay there in the summer. And so we're kind of
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: all around and you know, we get we're very blessed
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: to get to do what we did do. Yeah, how
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: do you spell v n I V I n A
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: I B I n A.
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: That's easy.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: And yeah, he's putting it.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: He's putting it into his itinerary right now.
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: He's pulling up open table, trying to get trying to
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: get as.
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: No, I'm not messing with you, man, I'm I'm definitely
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: stopping through. I'm gonna be there twice.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: Well like literally just message me, well, you know, well,
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: and then Yanni and in our resie we each even
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: have a little tags on there, so I'll put on
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: like a celebrity.
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: Put in easy on the spice.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: You'll be fine, man, you'll be fine.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: Thank you for joining us. Get back, get back to
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: those burgers and uh yeah, we'll talk to you.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: I appreciate it.
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I have a great day.
- 1:04:05Speaker 10: And just to highlight, thanks to you. Just to highlight,
- 1:04:08Speaker 10: he was on episode for eighty of The Meat Eater
- 1:04:13Speaker 10: Podcast with Steve and the Gang. It's called Going Feral
- 1:04:16Speaker 10: with the Monk.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: All right, boys, That brings us to the end of
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: today's episode, but we'll get some listener feedback from Phil
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: here before we say goodbye.
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: Yeah, not a whole lot of questions today, I'm assuming
- 1:04:25Speaker 6: just because everyone was so engaged with this incredible program.
- 1:04:28Speaker 6: But let's see, let's see, we have a gage. Is asking,
- 1:04:31Speaker 6: well doctor Randall ever become rooted against in trivia like
- 1:04:34Speaker 6: Steve once was, he's been dominating as long, if not
- 1:04:37Speaker 6: longer than Ranella Or is it more about personality than dominance?
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: Oh, Gage, you're not paying attention, buddy. We're definitely rooting
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: against him every It's just basically the world against Randall
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: in this.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: Room, rooting against him in a way that our most
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: recent episode they dropped yesterday. We gave all the players
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: an enormous advantage over Randall.
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: See you and they check that out, I will spoil
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: it you.
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: Speaking of Corey, Corey says Randall isn't allowed back in
- 1:05:05Speaker 6: Michigan after his T shirt stunt at the Big House.
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: He's putting his photo up at the border.
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: I mean, my apologies. Ann Arbor is a lovely place.
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: I had a great time, love getting to meet some
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: students at the University of Michigan. But uh, at my
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: core I'm a Buckeye and so so we tried to
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: I tried to do something subtle, tasteful, and I tried
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: to avoid any sort of confrontation. But I do appreciate
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: the hospitality in ann Arbor.
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: Randa Warren Ohio State University t shirt to an ann
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: Arbor game.
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: And I only showed it to the camera.
- 1:05:44Speaker 6: And this is this is like the one big, thick,
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: meaty question that we got during this show, and it's
- 1:05:48Speaker 6: it's kind of this is more of a col question.
- 1:05:50Speaker 6: But you guys are seasoned vets of the industry, and
- 1:05:52Speaker 6: maybe you'll have some insight here. But Ryan says tech
- 1:05:55Speaker 6: a Texan hunter here, is there any reason that state
- 1:05:57Speaker 6: or federal government couldn't buy some of the giant ranchers,
- 1:05:59Speaker 6: for saying, and convert them to public land slash state parks.
- 1:06:03Speaker 6: Is it just the lack of political will politics?
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I think each state is like sort of taken on,
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: it taken on its identity for hunters and anglers at
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: this point. And and that's just like not in Texas's
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: culture to have a whole bunch of public land to
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: go hunt. But I mean, you're not wrong. They probably
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: could do that.
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean there's there's budgets for federal land management
- 1:06:27Speaker 5: agencies to acquire lands and do land swaps and all
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: kinds of stuff. It's there's no there's no rule that
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: says what's not federal can never be federal. But yeah,
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: it's authornity issue politically.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: Some states are known for their opportunities. Some states are
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: known for their trophy units. In some states like Texas,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: are known for being heavily privatized for their game and fish.
- 1:06:50Speaker 6: Yeah, well the last quick hitters here, Chase is just
- 1:06:53Speaker 6: thanking Spencer for his his childlock on his freezer tip
- 1:06:57Speaker 6: from episode one from the Hot tip Offs.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: That's uh, that's the kind of advice you can get
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: from this here podcast. Something. He said his nine dollars
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: child block makes him sleep better at now.
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: Thank you for writing in, Chase.
- 1:07:08Speaker 6: Yeah, and we'll leave you all with some fighting words.
- 1:07:10Speaker 6: Posterior Attention says that the Minnesota State Fair has better
- 1:07:14Speaker 6: cheese curds than Wisconsin.
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: So some dude from Wisconsin that brought his cheese curds
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: over there to sell them.
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: I always trust to internet commentary with the handle posterior attention.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: All right, that is it for this week's episode. We'll
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: see you guys back your same time in place in
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: seven days.
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: Thank you gang.
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: Thanks boys, that was fun.
