- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Hope you are having a great
- 0:04Thursday so far and I'm going to be so for real.
- 0:09I got a spicy one this morning. This is a passage that I am
- 0:14feeling the weight of. It's not because it's
- 0:16complicated, but it's confronting.
- 0:19And as I sat with it this morning, I realized if I'm
- 0:23feeling it, I know that someone listening is probably going to
- 0:26feel it and need it to. So before we jump right in, I do
- 0:31want to say a very brief prayer. I just do not want this to be my
- 0:35opinions or my emotions. I want this to be what God is
- 0:39saying through His word and simply what He has shown me
- 0:43today. So Father, would you speak
- 0:47clearly through me? Guard my words.
- 0:51Let it be your truth. Soften our hearts and give us
- 0:56the ears to hear, not just to listen, but to hear your voice
- 1:00God, and to respond to it. We pray this in Jesus name,
- 1:05Amen. OK, we are going to be in
- 1:09Matthew chapter 21, verses 28 through 32.
- 1:14This is titled the parable of two sons.
- 1:19Jesus said to his critics, tell me what you think of this
- 1:23parable. There once was a man with two
- 1:26sons. The father came to the 1st and
- 1:29said, Son, I want you to go and work in the vineyard today.
- 1:33The son replied, I'd rather not. But afterward he deeply
- 1:38regretted what he said to his father, changed his mind, and
- 1:42decided to go to the vineyard. The father approached the second
- 1:46son and said the same thing to him.
- 1:48The son replied, Father, I will go and do as you said, but he
- 1:53never did. He didn't go to the vineyard.
- 1:56Tell me now which of these two sons did the will of his Father?
- 2:01They answered him. The first one, Jesus said you're
- 2:05right for many sinners, tax collectors and prostitutes are
- 2:10going into God's Kingdom realm ahead of you.
- 2:13John came to show you the path of righteousness, yet the
- 2:17despised and outcast believed in Him, but you did not.
- 2:21When you saw them turn, you neither repented of your ways
- 2:25nor believed his words. OK, well before we get a little
- 2:31uncomfortable, we have to start here.
- 2:34God is incredibly merciful and gracious y'all.
- 2:38He invites everyone into His Kingdom without limitations.
- 2:43There are no background checks or prerequisites.
- 2:47Scripture tells us that God is actually being patient, delaying
- 2:51judgement because He wants more people to be saved.
- 2:54We see this in Second Peter 39. The Lord is not slow to fulfill
- 2:59his promise, as some count slowness, but is patient towards
- 3:03you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should
- 3:07reach repentance. That is the heart of the Father
- 3:10in this story. Now, when I first read it, I
- 3:14assumed, kind of, that the Son who said no was the obvious
- 3:19problem. I mean, who would talk to their
- 3:21father like that and just completely disregard what he
- 3:25said? But what's interesting is that
- 3:28Jesus flips it. The son who initially refuses
- 3:32ends up repenting. He changes his mind and he
- 3:35actually goes and does the work. But the other son, on the other
- 3:39hand, he says the right thing. He looks obedient on the
- 3:43surface, but he never actually follows through.
- 3:47You see, he prefers the appearance of obedience over
- 3:50actual obedience. And Jesus makes it so, so clear.
- 3:55Obedience is not what you say, it's what you do.
- 4:00So this parable is actually confronting the religious
- 4:04leaders of Israel at the time that Jesus is sharing this.
- 4:08They claimed to want and desire God's will, but their lives
- 4:13constantly contradicted it. They were going through the
- 4:16motions of religion while rejecting true repentance.
- 4:21So the passage right before this that I have not done an episode
- 4:25on, but you can go back and read it, shows those same leaders
- 4:29questioning Jesus's authority. It's not because they wanted the
- 4:33truth, but they wanted control. They were trying to trap Jesus,
- 4:38and Jesus exposes their hearts. He shows that they only wanted
- 4:42the truth if it supported their own viewpoints.
- 4:46And here's where I believe it gets personal for us.
- 4:50God already knows your motives. He knows if you're putting on a
- 4:55face but are actually far from His heart.
- 4:59He knows if you're seeking Him for show, like attending church,
- 5:03going to Christian events, or if you're seeking him when nobody
- 5:08else sees in the Quiet place. He knows whether your repentance
- 5:12is real or just verbal. So saying that I'm working on it
- 5:18while remaining comfortable in sin.
- 5:21That is not repentance. Repentance means active turning
- 5:25away. It's not perfection, but it is
- 5:29direction. And I know I probably sound like
- 5:32a broken record. I honestly feel like 1 because
- 5:35so many of the podcasts have been harping on this.
- 5:38But it always come back, comes back to this obedience.
- 5:43Yes, Jesus did the work to reconcile us to God.
- 5:47Salvation is by grace alone. But following him.
- 5:51It takes action in a world that does not follow Him.
- 5:55So I want to say this plainly and lovingly.
- 6:00Y'all, God the Father, He would rather have the person who lived
- 6:05a corrupt lifestyle, think a thief or someone trapped in
- 6:10addiction, or to put it plainly, somebody in a strip club,
- 6:15somebody like that who truly turns from their sin and
- 6:19surrenders their life to him. He would prefer that than the
- 6:22person who is calling themselves a good Christian who goes to
- 6:26church, knows the spiritual language, but continues in
- 6:30sexual immorality, in deception or a double lifestyle that's
- 6:35contradicting what they say they believe.
- 6:38And y'all, I'm saying this humbly and with love, because I
- 6:42was the good Christian girl who was going through the motions.
- 6:46I looked obedient from the outside, but inwardly I was not
- 6:51rejecting sin and turning from what I knew was wrong.
- 6:55I was just managing it. So we have to be real with
- 6:58ourselves. The gospel is offensive.
- 7:04Second Timothy 316, it says that it corrects and rebukes us.
- 7:10This is meant to expose us, but this is how Scripture trains us
- 7:15in righteousness so that we can be thoroughly equipped as
- 7:20servants of God. And I just want you all to think
- 7:23about Christ, the pure, blameless, spotless, perfect Son
- 7:29of God, left heaven to be mocked and tortured and killed for the
- 7:35very people that were doing this to him.
- 7:39If that's not offensive, if that doesn't confront us, I don't
- 7:43know what does. Because we cannot keep listening
- 7:48only to parts of the Bible that we like and want to listen to
- 7:53and just ignore the rest. Yes, we're going to mess up.
- 7:58And there is grace. God's grace is sufficient, but
- 8:03when you do mess up, are you doing everything you can to not
- 8:07stay there? This means fighting it,
- 8:10combating the sin through prayer.
- 8:13We depend on the Holy Spirit to give us that power and asking
- 8:17God for strength to resist temptation.
- 8:20You seek accountability from godly friends and mentors, but
- 8:24because God knows your heart, He is coming back to judge the
- 8:28living and the dead. And it says all throughout
- 8:31Scripture, but specifically in Matthew 2521, that there will be
- 8:36a day when you hear either well done, my good and faithful
- 8:41servant, or as Matthew 721 through 23 mentions, depart from
- 8:47me. I never knew you, so you have to
- 8:50ask yourself, which one do I want to hear and which one am I
- 8:54living to hear? We have to stop excusing sin and
- 8:58disobedience because God's word is clear.
- 9:03Let this be a challenge for all of us.
- 9:06Let your actions match your words.
- 9:09Jesus says in Luke 1128 that blessed are those who hear the
- 9:13word of God and obey it. So here's some reflection and
- 9:18challenge questions I'm going to leave y'all with #1 Am I more
- 9:24concerned with appearing obedient or actually doing the
- 9:28will of the Father? 2 Is there an area where I've
- 9:32been saying yes to God with my words, but no with my life?
- 9:38And #3 where might God be correcting me?
- 9:42This is not for shame, but to help me walk in righteousness
- 9:46and holiness. So I'm going to move into prayer
- 9:49right now. God, we want to please You, not
- 9:57people. We don't live for man's
- 9:59approval, as Your word says. We speak and live not to gain
- 10:05human approval, but to honor You who tests our hearts.
- 10:11God, search us. Would you correct us and align
- 10:16us with Your truth? Provide us with the humility to
- 10:21truly repent and would you strengthen us to walk in
- 10:24obedience? We cannot do this on our own,
- 10:27Father. It is not by might nor by
- 10:30strength, but by your Spirit. We rely on you, Jesus.
- 10:35We pray this all in your heavenly name.
- 10:38Amen. OK, well that was that was a
- 10:44challenging 1 for sure, but it was awesome to talk through and
- 10:50just praying that the Lord continues speaking to you and
- 10:56that you take this confrontation and really let it soak up in
- 11:01your heart and go to His word and go to him in prayer and ask
- 11:05Him to speak to you. I will see you on the next
- 11:08episode. Have a great rest of your day.
