- 1:11I love you. I know you do.
- 1:15I love it. Get up every day and jump out of
- 1:20bed, right? Like with the birds singing and
- 1:22the right. It's always like that.
- 1:25Just kidding, probably not with my own.
- 1:27I think you're gonna say your day was crazy, my day.
- 1:30A was too and actually I even was intentional about saying to
- 1:34myself. No, you cannot go to the gym
- 1:38today that will make you just too rushed and I would rather
- 1:41come into this. Just, you know, and instead I
- 1:45got on a call while I was getting ready, I had mom life
- 1:47going in the baby, wanted to make a smoothie and then he
- 1:49wanted to make eggs. And then he wanted to, I mean, I
- 1:52was a short-order cook this morning and I jump that call.
- 1:55I told you about with my new members, and then I started
- 1:57getting ready and got on a call. This brand manager that I've
- 2:01been wanting to talk to so I'm like, I can do that while I'm
- 2:04getting ready and then all of a sudden I look at the time and
- 2:06I'm like, hey, I don't know what clown face.
- 2:08I've been putting on this whole talking to you, you know, you're
- 2:11just kind of like lala and then be, I'm like it's 10:15.
- 2:16So when I come running in here, it was so funny that Ashley's
- 2:18like, yeah, this is the link. You get on in 6 minutes and I'm
- 2:21like, okay, good night is here. Yeah, I had a similar morning.
- 2:28It was said, I have a 7:00. Meeting and I'm in my car and I
- 2:31live down at 7:03 and I was like, oh my gosh, what does
- 2:35happen in the morning? Anyway, however, you're joining
- 2:38us on the real money show. I'm so grateful, you're here and
- 2:40I think you can already tell that we're going to have a
- 2:42really Lively conversation with Gina, and before we do that
- 2:46Gina. So with the Revitalize Womanhood
- 2:49environment, group Community Sisterhood, I like my guests to
- 2:53give their formal introduction, rather than me reading off a bio
- 2:56or something. So will you introduce yourself
- 2:58to our audience? Lutely.
- 3:00I would love to first of all. Thank you for letting me be with
- 3:03you here and talk to your lovely listeners.
- 3:06I'm so excited about this chat. Like you said, we already feel
- 3:09like we're kind of, I'm the Saint George version of Lisa's
- 3:12Vegas, and we're just like, you're already good like that.
- 3:16So, I am. My name is Gina trimmer.
- 3:18I am first first and foremost, a wife to my very tall dark and
- 3:24handsome husband of almost 17 years where I'm taking every
- 3:28month I count. Every month.
- 3:31Okay I've worked for everything and my favorite role is to be
- 3:38Mama to my three boys. I'm a boy.
- 3:40Mom times 3. I have an 11 and 8 and a little
- 3:44Caboose, he's too. So he was very intentional as
- 3:47well. That was on purpose and I am a
- 3:52child in a family, LDS Utah, family, eight kids.
- 3:56So the absolute what you think of when you think of an LDS?
- 4:00Family, in Utah and let's see. I am the after so many years of
- 4:07trying to figure out where I belong Ben asked last year to be
- 4:12the founder and creator of the Revitalize Womanhood community
- 4:16and women's movement. And I am so so like I found my
- 4:20place. Right.
- 4:22You just finally clicks and you're just like I'm home.
- 4:27Like this is so me and your actual gifts and your passions
- 4:31and your purpose. Just get to come shooting out of
- 4:34your fingertips every day, right.
- 4:36I actually have a one of my members and it's funny because
- 4:39her episode came out last Tuesday and she had told me in
- 4:44our group, she was one of my very first members and she had
- 4:47told me in my group at one point that she did not care for me.
- 4:52When she first heard my podcast, she came to me from her.
- 4:56Her husband and son is, they are part of the order of, man, which
- 4:59is the Counterpoint my women's movement.
- 5:02And so they said, hey, you need to go.
- 5:04This is the women's. It's finally here, you know, go
- 5:07check it out. And she says, I listened to your
- 5:08first episode, and I did not care for you nice.
- 5:13And I'm like, well, why? And she says, no one could be
- 5:17that that perky. And I was like, that's me.
- 5:23We're where are you in the order of the eight children in your
- 5:25family? Earth.
- 5:26Does that just? Yes, I am.
- 5:30The independent I was never home.
- 5:33Even from the young age, we have a picture.
- 5:36We lived on a farm. When I was young and we have a
- 5:38picture of me standing next to the door.
- 5:40When I was three. Maybe I mean my little brother
- 5:43who's two years younger, could barely walk probably.
- 5:45So for maybe and I'm standing next to the door just as
- 5:49innocent as can be and I've created this like makeshift like
- 5:53ladder of not have been climbing up.
- 5:56Up whatever it was that I put together for him to reach the
- 5:58unlock on the screen door and I'm like the picture is just him
- 6:02like unlocking at me like I mom I mean I don't know like what is
- 6:07he up to crazy kids and that's from the get-go, I was just an
- 6:12Explorer, a Wanderer independent.
- 6:15Where was your farm? So my grandpa owns a farm.
- 6:19He owned, he's passed away now but my family owns a farm up in
- 6:22Garland Utah. So almost Idaho.
- 6:25Okay, Way North, mmm. Yep, yep.
- 6:27And to Kaysville, which is not the big city but is a big city
- 6:33in regards to Garland. It's suburb of Salt Lake, I
- 6:36guess is what you have call, and we moved there when I was about
- 6:39five. So until I was 5, I've spent my
- 6:42days wandering Farm Fields, chasing kittens, walking train
- 6:48tracks, picking asparagus out of ditches, Getting to Know
- 6:52Yourself. Absolutely.
- 6:54Yeah. Because I knew your name, one of
- 7:00you, come here, and no one knew my name.
- 7:03My sister's actually sold me for a bag of popsicles.
- 7:06When I was born, my older sisters.
- 7:08I have three older sisters. Okay, they sold me for a bag of
- 7:11popsicles, to a random stranger. Yeah, you know, luckily, he
- 7:17didn't take me, I don't know what that life would have been,
- 7:19like, I'm glad you made it out of that situation it out.
- 7:25Leave it to the older sisters. My gosh, the older sisters for
- 7:29me were way. They were my brothers.
- 7:32And I mean, it's like you say, when you don't have a father
- 7:37figure or you don't have an older brother, guess what?
- 7:40It works out that you do their work, it was fights all the
- 7:45time. I mean we would wrestle we would
- 7:47fight. It was like brothers and then my
- 7:49little brother's come along and they were so sweet.
- 7:52And so quiet and so just bless their little hearts.
- 7:55My poor Pair by the time they got through four girls really
- 7:59tired. They deserved those boys.
- 8:01Deserved those good sweet boys. Yeah, I love that.
- 8:05We could be here all day talking about that but I do think it's a
- 8:08good segue because I like to have our listeners be on the
- 8:12journey to really get to know you.
- 8:15There's so much that you offer the world today which we will
- 8:17get to toward the end of the show and your journey like we
- 8:22were talking about right before the show and like what I teach
- 8:24in my world is that your journey has everything to do with the
- 8:27decisions and choices that you've made.
- 8:30And then as we as we Shift into adulthood and become conscious
- 8:33choosers. Then you've made some really
- 8:34conscious choices to change the direction of your life.
- 8:37And I want to take the listener on the journey because I think
- 8:39that's so so cool. And I I'm curious, I'm nosy, I
- 8:43want to know, too. So I am a neighbor to Utah.
- 8:47So growing up. We only went to Utah or
- 8:50California for holidays. It was only one or the other.
- 8:54So I'm very familiar with Utah and I love Utah.
- 8:58Actually, we just got back from Zion, which I know you guys are
- 9:01doing. Cool things in St.
- 9:02George and we're looking to partner together and just be
- 9:05neighbors, the great neighbors but let's talk about being
- 9:09raised and your relationship with money.
- 9:13So we framework this show that you had some really big aha
- 9:17moments in your 20s that really shifted in Altered the course of
- 9:21your life with Rick. When did you meet Rick?
- 9:23How old were you? Oh, we got married in 2006, so
- 9:30maybe three. Yeah.
- 9:31So I met him. Yeah, I was about 22.
- 9:34I was married before to my high-school sweetheart.
- 9:37Who actually played baseball at CCS n back when it was CCS n.
- 9:40Yeah, and it was when they very first built that brand new
- 9:43baseball stadium anyway, so but it was just not a fault of Utah,
- 9:51but feeling like you needed to just do the next thing and do
- 9:53the next step in check. Next box and marry your high
- 9:56school sweetheart, right? So nothing wrong with him,
- 9:58nothing wrong with me. Just we were not ready to do
- 10:01that so we did get divorced after a year and then I met Rick
- 10:04a year later I believe. Cool.
- 10:08I have so many questions but let's start, let's even start
- 10:10like living on a farm and then also being a woman in the LDS
- 10:16Community, I was raised around a lot of LDS friends and there's a
- 10:20lot of social networking and also a lot of socializing about
- 10:25the role of the woman and the man growing up.
- 10:27How did that impact you as a young woman going into your
- 10:31teens about like what you what you saw your role in life to be
- 10:36always? A wife and mother always, that
- 10:38was always my role and and not that it was that was not a bad
- 10:43thing. I've always wanted to be a wife
- 10:44and mother that's my most favorite thing on the planet.
- 10:48But my example was also from a woman who was raised by a wife
- 10:54and mother on a like a farm family, right?
- 10:57So very important, they homesteaded that farm.
- 10:59So it was generationally the men did the farming, the wife,
- 11:05stayed home, and cooked and got them.
- 11:06Are hearty meals and sent them back out to the fields, right?
- 11:09And, and so my mom and it was always, humble means.
- 11:12And so, my mom learned from a young age, especially, because
- 11:15her mom got cancer. So, she was the oldest girl and
- 11:19they sold their clothes. They made their bread, they have
- 11:23their Gardens, right? It was very important to be very
- 11:27smart with your money and budget.
- 11:29And, you know, they just didn't have much.
- 11:31So, what they did have, they had to do the best they could with.
- 11:35Yeah, and Then how did the, how did that translate for you as a
- 11:40teenager and into your 20s. So what's hard about me?
- 11:45And it's hard for me to talk about because it was no fault of
- 11:48my parents at all. They cannot they cannot pick
- 11:53what little personality. I come to this Earth with,
- 11:56right? And for me, I was everything
- 11:58hell-bent on being exactly opposite of what my parents
- 12:02wanted me to be from the day. I was, like, I said, when I was
- 12:05little trying to break out of the house and be A wild and
- 12:07free. I was just no one was going to
- 12:09tell me what to do. And so being part of a religion
- 12:12that is 100% telling you what to do and how to live.
- 12:16And I always felt Uncomfortable in it.
- 12:21I guess they used to wrestle me into dresses.
- 12:23I was a tomboy. They would have to wrestle me
- 12:25into dresses, just to go to church.
- 12:27I mean, I would just I did not everything about it.
- 12:30I just did not like it other than the community and that
- 12:35aspect of knowing all your neighbors and being friends,
- 12:38with all the kids in the neighborhood been and support,
- 12:41like I could knock on anybody's door.
- 12:43Anytime I knew every neighbor's name, I could knock on any
- 12:47person's door and know that. That they would feed me.
- 12:50Close me, do anything. You know what I mean?
- 12:52Like, if I were, if I needed anything so that aspect of that,
- 12:56and that's not a religion per se.
- 12:59That's human beings Cameron a community, right?
- 13:03But in an organized religion for me, being told, what to do was
- 13:09really hard. So I I fought it.
- 13:12I fought it and my parents bless their sweethearts.
- 13:16Didn't know how else to deal with that, right?
- 13:18They just did the best they could.
- 13:20So when I talk about it, I hope they know me well enough, now to
- 13:26know that, I don't blame them for anything.
- 13:29So like saying my mom, I had her on.
- 13:31I actually did a podcast with her and I said I don't blame her
- 13:35at all for she did what she could with the information she
- 13:39had, right? So for me it was never.
- 13:44Be a doctor. Be a lawyer, you can be anything
- 13:47you. Want be an entrepreneur, it
- 13:49wasn't these things. It was surviving.
- 13:51She had a kid was making sure we had closed, making sure we were
- 13:54fed making sure it right. So and it was one income.
- 13:59So my dad worked, which ironically he was a banker.
- 14:02He was always a bank manager, whatever.
- 14:05And so I knew from the start that if I wanted something
- 14:10special, I had to work for it. I had to get a job.
- 14:13I had to get the money and pay for For it.
- 14:15So I knew from we had a garden, right?
- 14:19We had we would go to Hostess and buy the bread that was
- 14:23cheaper, right? We would.
- 14:25So I knew these things that my mom was doing, she would balance
- 14:30her checkbook. Religiously, my mom is so good
- 14:33at that. I remember watching my mom
- 14:35balance her checkbook. Every time she made a purchase,
- 14:37it would go right in her little account balance.
- 14:39And that's so funny because for me, I am opposite of that.
- 14:44And I I kind of think that maybe because of the way I was, as a
- 14:48rebellious I'm going to touch the stove kind of personality
- 14:53that maybe that work towards me, not doing it because I didn't
- 14:58want to do what they did. Or I didn't want to be told that
- 15:02I had to do something which it's weird how you take that in as a
- 15:06child, because you don't understand it, right?
- 15:09And then it turns into these kinds of habits and systems that
- 15:13you create in your Or blueprints for your bad habits as an adult.
- 15:17But you don't realize they're there.
- 15:20You don't realize they're there and it's interesting for you to
- 15:22say bad habits, right? Even just now thinking about, or
- 15:26maybe potentially judging the decisions that you made against
- 15:29how you were raised and what you learned or what you do.
- 15:32Now, of course, it usually is one of two ways.
- 15:35So in the Neuroscience of the way that we make up our stories
- 15:39and our own beliefs because that's not how you were raised.
- 15:42So, usually children will model The behavior that they learn
- 15:45from their parents and in some point either have to choose in
- 15:49or out of that or they go the opposite direction and it sounds
- 15:53like you just chose the opposite.
- 15:54Like I don't want to be with that the bike that and whatever
- 15:57you had made up in your head about it and then at some point
- 16:00started to move in the opposite direction.
- 16:04Knowing what you know now what do you think was going on at
- 16:06that time? What were the beliefs that you
- 16:07had about budgeting or not? Having enough, we talked about
- 16:11this when you interviewed me for your podcast, but for my
- 16:14listeners, So what were some of those beliefs that you had as a
- 16:17result of seeing your? It sounds like, essentially,
- 16:19they like be very mindful. Your, your mom had to be very
- 16:22mindful with money and you went the opposite direction.
- 16:25What were some of those beliefs that you had?
- 16:27And it probably, honestly was nothing to do with money but it
- 16:31was money. Was the thing under the thing,
- 16:33right? It always is there something the
- 16:34matter that thing but for mine, it was, I was embarrassed that
- 16:38we were poor. I mean, we weren't poor but I
- 16:41felt like that I was embarrassed that my friends had nice clothes
- 16:44and Whatever have nice houses and I so for me it was an image.
- 16:50I was embarrassed that we would go to church and maybe not look.
- 16:55As. Polished are polished, right?
- 16:59My poor mom is wrangling eight kids whom none of them want to
- 17:02go to church, okay? And my dad take baths or dick
- 17:05night and my dad is committed to this religion who where he's
- 17:11doing the best, what he thinks is right, but really that
- 17:13religion got more of him than us.
- 17:16Honestly, if you think about what a man's role is, in
- 17:19organized, religion, it is to be not only working your 9 to 5 or
- 17:24whatever you do, right? You're gone.
- 17:26But on, Sunday, you're completely committed to your
- 17:29callings after work, on the weekdays, you're committed to
- 17:33Collings whether that's in the bishopric whether that's in the
- 17:36Boy Scouts, whether that's in the right.
- 17:38You're committed to all of these different callings and we also
- 17:41had neighbors that would call him.
- 17:42If they had difficult, like the neighbor who had a difficult son
- 17:46and they would call my dad to come help them with this.
- 17:49So he was doing the best. He could to serve his community
- 17:54and be all of these things. When really he had Family at
- 17:58home that were maybe not getting as much of him as we should
- 18:01have. Hmm.
- 18:03So for me that that has played a huge role but okay, wow, where
- 18:08did we go with this? Okay.
- 18:09So anyway, wow, sorry, right turn.
- 18:12So back to that, I learned pretty quickly that I wanted to
- 18:16have nice things, so I want to have whether it was from making
- 18:21the money or by the time I made it to, I started working when I
- 18:25was 14 at a retirement home. Home and I loved it but minimum
- 18:29wage at that time is like $4 or yeah.
- 18:32It was like nothing. And so by the time I did
- 18:36actually get a job when I was 15 or 16 at the mall at PacSun, I
- 18:40got my first credit card and it was like $200.
- 18:43And so I would Max it out and buy what I wanted, right?
- 18:47And I would make payments, but I didn't fully understand.
- 18:51It's exactly what they get you for, you know, credit cards when
- 18:54used properly and your On them are amazing tools, right?
- 19:00But how many people is like, yes, wasn't built on winners,
- 19:04right? Same concept, the banks don't,
- 19:07you know, fund themselves on people who know how to play the
- 19:10game. So and that's that's where my
- 19:13trap began was when I was 15 years old, that two hundred
- 19:16dollar credit card, gotcha, so I also I had a very parallel
- 19:21experience not raised LDS. My mom was a stay-at-home mom
- 19:24and I had made a decision that I wanted nice things because we
- 19:27Can get the nice things growing up and so my credit card debt
- 19:30started in college was my for I got to college.
- 19:34I was like, whoa, people live so different from us from that
- 19:40Journey having nice things pack Center, remember packs and I
- 19:44always wanted to work at PacSun but I never thought I was cool
- 19:46enough. So you want the cool girls at
- 19:48PacSun? When did you meet your first
- 19:51husband in high school you started dating?
- 19:55When did you move to st. George So I moved to st.
- 19:58George actually, when he went to, he got a scholarship to see
- 20:03CSN. So I thought Not only was Dixie
- 20:07a good way to be close to him, but my family also, founded st.
- 20:11George. So, I have a partial scholarship
- 20:13at Dixie, so it just worked out and I would just drive to Vegas
- 20:17every weekend and so that's, we came.
- 20:20I came down to so I've lived in St.
- 20:22George now longer in my entire life than anywhere else.
- 20:25Yeah, I basically I'm from here, right?
- 20:28It's crazy to I mean Vegas Henderson and st.
- 20:31George or two of the fastest growing cities in America right
- 20:34now and remember growing up to drive through st.
- 20:36George it was kind of like it, just a blip.
- 20:39We always had to go through st. George but now it's massive.
- 20:42Yeah. How many millions of people is
- 20:44it like a million people yet? Two million people?
- 20:46I don't know. My husband so good about numbers
- 20:48like that and numbers for me, that's a blueprint numbers for
- 20:51me, is I shut down my brain literally shuts down when you
- 20:56start asking A know my kite. Mmm.
- 21:00And that's from my dad being a banker and trying to teach math
- 21:03to us and our homework and me not understanding it.
- 21:06So he'd get upset and I've nope, shut down now, I am shut down.
- 21:10Luckily, my little boys are math geniuses and my husband does it
- 21:16with them and I'm like, I'll get me on when you're ready to write
- 21:19papers in it. Come see me.
- 21:20But numbers know. So yeah, my husband knows, he's
- 21:24so interested in things like that.
- 21:25Like what's the population at? What's the The bubble, and I'm
- 21:28like, who cares? Yeah, yeah, thank you, it's
- 21:31crazy. Thank you for sharing that
- 21:33that's super vulnerable. And even in a conversation about
- 21:36money. My what I tell when I'm on stage
- 21:39is and what I'm talking to women, it's like you don't have
- 21:41to be great with numbers. I mean I chose my college major
- 21:45to say, okay, there's three Majors that require very little
- 21:48math. Which one am I going to do?
- 21:50You know, get me out of the math wheelhouse and the truth is you
- 21:53don't have to be great with numbers to be great with money
- 21:56and speaker. With your life and to have what
- 21:58it is, you say you want. So that's, that's, that's really
- 22:01great. I am really great.
- 22:01The way that this conversation is flashing out because that is
- 22:06been leading you into your 20s and were you working as a
- 22:12married woman? For the first time around, you
- 22:14were going to school where you also working on before even.
- 22:18We got married. So he was playing baseball and I
- 22:22was here at Dixie. So my job was a teller at US
- 22:25Bank and So I did, I had a job, a good job and ironically enough
- 22:31in the banking industry. You know, what's so funny about
- 22:33that? Is I my upbringing was all the
- 22:35background of the banking industry.
- 22:37My my job through college was that and still my concept of how
- 22:44it works. Was non-existent how interesting
- 22:49is that horrible as that? That's horrible.
- 22:51So I actually racked up and because my parents couldn't
- 22:55afford to give us a lot of things so my Luckily bless his
- 22:58heart. He did this.
- 22:59He found a way to basically not, take a loan out for me, but
- 23:06basically he would put whatever I did on a credit card, and
- 23:09because he was smart, art limit, he would get offers this said,
- 23:13okay, do you want to roll this over now at no interest, right?
- 23:15So, he would play that game for me in the background.
- 23:18I didn't have to worry about that but I was accumulating
- 23:23debt. So I went to Salt Lake Community
- 23:25College. First before I came down to
- 23:27Dixie, so whatever that cost or whatever.
- 23:30And then when I moved to Dixie, I had to put my housing on the
- 23:33credit card. I had to put my my school what I
- 23:37didn't get scholarship for which was not all of it and the books
- 23:41and and living, whatever, you know, whatever.
- 23:42And then after we got married things went on the credit card
- 23:47like I had to buy a car, right? So I got a little Jetta that
- 23:50went on the credit card. So honestly by the time I was
- 23:53divorced and twenty one or two years old.
- 23:57Right? I had 20,000 dollars of debt
- 24:01that might thank goodness. My dad was playing the game for
- 24:04me and rolling it over to no interest.
- 24:07No interest, no interest. And I'm so grateful and blessed
- 24:10that he could do that for me. But I still had it.
- 24:15So at 20 sell their old. I had twenty thousand dollars
- 24:17worth of debt that in some ways. Unconscious the accumulated.
- 24:22Yeah. Yeah, similar story.
- 24:25I was in my twenties with but yeah, about the same.
- 24:27It's amazing how quickly it can happen.
- 24:30Right and then we don't know what we don't know our brains
- 24:33aren't fully developed and formed until our mid-20s male
- 24:36and female 26, 27 years old. So we're making all of these
- 24:40decisions and we're treated like adults in the finance industry
- 24:43and we still have so much to learn and grow.
- 24:46And, you know, just a few minutes to break.
- 24:49This is the perfect segue because then you got remarried.
- 24:52You met, Rick? You got remarried.
- 24:54And I know from from the way that you we've shared this story
- 24:59before it. Stop.
- 25:02It sounds like it almost got worse.
- 25:04Yeah, there was two of us with the same thinking.
- 25:07Yeah, so help me understand. So from that transition you are
- 25:10managing like minimum payments probably.
- 25:13Yes, I was because at this time I was living with a roommate or
- 25:18two in a town home and I still had my payments and I still had
- 25:21everything, right? So I was basically barely making
- 25:24payments and then having a little left over to be a 20 year
- 25:27old and trying to go out and have drinks or go.
- 25:30To dinner with friends or by the cute outfits I mean severe
- 25:34shopping happen, right? And so then I met Rick and it
- 25:38was the same thing. We he was starting a business
- 25:41and making a lot of money. And so we started Living in a
- 25:46lifestyle that was outside of our means.
- 25:49It's he loves to say his favorite thing to say now is
- 25:52it's not how much money you make.
- 25:54It's how much money you spend. That is the secret.
- 25:57It's if you can get ahold of that, then you will be in a
- 26:00better. Better place, right?
- 26:01And so it just and he actually didn't know about my twenty
- 26:06thousand dollars in debt. Oh, yeah, that's a story for a
- 26:10after the break. I don't know.
- 26:12Get into that before. But uh, but this goes back to
- 26:15being in, I wasn't, I mean, I guess I was embarrassed.
- 26:19If I'm being honest, I was embarrassed about it but also we
- 26:22don't talk about money, right? It's not your business.
- 26:26It's my business. It's not something I talk about.
- 26:29I wasn't raised that way. So To tell him this was none of
- 26:33his business. I was handling it.
- 26:34I was living my life in managing and making my own payments.
- 26:37I didn't need a man to take care of me.
- 26:39Right. So when we did get married, that
- 26:42was still a secret and that came a obviously huge problem, right?
- 26:49Like 20 grand that you don't know about and, and we worked
- 26:53through it, but I did. I paid it all off myself and and
- 26:58It was, but it was one of those things that I hid because of my
- 27:01blueprints with money. Yep, it's all connected.
- 27:05Mmm, it's all connected. Thank you for sharing that
- 27:08there. There, there are women listening
- 27:10to this right now who have secrets.
- 27:12And so I do we have just a couple minutes to break but one
- 27:14thing I would like to do is talk through and walk through that
- 27:17Journey because it's really scary for a lot of people
- 27:21thinking about not only, are they going to be mad at me which
- 27:24is like the best possible outcome that they're just mad.
- 27:28There's trust and betrayal and other other fears that people
- 27:33have. And I don't know what yours
- 27:33where, which we'll talk about when we pick up from the break,
- 27:36but there's those fears that like I'm not they're going to
- 27:38leave me or that this is going to cause a huge Rift or that,
- 27:42you know, breaking trust all of that.
- 27:43So we'll talk about that after the break with just a with just
- 27:48a few seconds left while like 30 seconds left to break thinking
- 27:53about where you are today, what would you have told that?
- 27:5722 year old young woman. I get this question a lot
- 28:01because I am in a women's community.
- 28:03So it was actually on my last Friday episode.
- 28:05They asked me what I would tell young girl Gina and it's don't
- 28:08live your life for someone else. Don't check boxes.
- 28:13Don't don't. Don't do things because you
- 28:16think that's what they want you to do.
- 28:19Who is they right? Live your life for you if you
- 28:23want to buy a car, do it. But make the choices of It's
- 28:28smart, right? If you don't want to get
- 28:30married, but even though everybody in Utah says, get
- 28:32married, don't do it live, your life for you.
- 28:36I'm guessing that that's what revital revitalized Womanhood is
- 28:40all about. Yeah, I can't wait to lean into
- 28:42that and it's a it's a definitely a new way of being
- 28:46and thinking for so many women, I can't wait to talk about that.
- 28:51Absolutely cool. Okay so if you're listening this

- 32:10here, is Lisa stain, it's me and Gina Me and you.
- 32:16Hello, we're back. That's so funny.
- 32:18It says that that you can call in and I'm sitting here thinking
- 32:21oh I hope my husband didn't just write that number down.
- 32:25I hope he does. Call him.
- 32:26That would be amazing. I would love to talk to me.
- 32:28Dear any call Rick Hollis. He's on Dad life.
- 32:34Yeah they at home dad now so he's probably entertaining the
- 32:37two-year-old. Okay cool well that's cool too,
- 32:40that's amazing. That's actually we were talking
- 32:42about this on break. I actually love our break.
- 32:44Some So much because we just get to like for a second before we
- 32:48regroup for the second half of the show and I thought it was a
- 32:51good segue to talk about Robin Sharma and what's the name of
- 32:54the book who will cry when you die?
- 32:57Yeah, we're talking about values and what's on your Tombstone and
- 33:01like you can't take you can't take a U-Haul with you to have
- 33:04him. Write like it all these
- 33:07conversations which is a great segue to where you were living
- 33:11and what life was like. And and similar ways.
- 33:14I had a big crash Rash in my life around materialism and
- 33:17about things and about what was really important.
- 33:20But here's the truth for all of our listeners today.
- 33:22If you want to know what your values are go, look at your bank
- 33:25account. That would be, that would be
- 33:28your homework is go look and see at what you're actually spending
- 33:32your money on or where your money is going because you might
- 33:35say that you value certain things.
- 33:38But is it money coach? I have the privilege of looking
- 33:40at people's money all day long and then I can point out like
- 33:44this is what you say, this is actually what's really important
- 33:47to you and I love like we were talking about introductions.
- 33:50How you introduce yourself that your wife and a mother?
- 33:54Because at the end of the day and and so many other Other
- 33:57things, right? But what matters to you most is
- 34:02the stuff that matters at the end of the day?
- 34:06I'll say that I really believe that's the case.
- 34:08And this great to like intersect to where we're coming to in the
- 34:12show to talk about what happened at 25 and 26 for you and Rick.
- 34:16But before we get there, what's present with you talking about
- 34:20like what really matters? Well that's actually it's funny.
- 34:24What just came to mind was my mom.
- 34:26And she told me of this story and I'm going to paraphrase
- 34:29because I wasn't there and obviously it's like a game of
- 34:32telephone stories are right and she basically was at her High
- 34:36School reunions and a very small Garland, very small town.
- 34:39I mean they probably had 20 people there that was her
- 34:42graduating class, who knows? And they she said that we stood
- 34:46around and said what our greatest accomplishment was and
- 34:51she said I was so embarrassed because I thought well, I
- 34:54haven't done anything. What is my Greatest
- 34:57accomplishment, I might have talked to her about this on mine
- 34:59anyway, and, and I'm sitting there Ford while she's telling
- 35:03this story because in my mind, I'm like, wanting to scream and
- 35:06shake her but she's finishing her story and she says, I made
- 35:08him skip me and I'll come back to me, you know, I let me think
- 35:11about it, whatever. And I said, mother you have
- 35:15raised eight children to be functioning participants in
- 35:22society. Like we all have families, we
- 35:24all have jobs, we all, you know, you know, I mean, like, we're
- 35:28educated, some my sisters and my brothers and nurse practitioner,
- 35:31my sisters are nurses. Like, we, you have successfully
- 35:36raised a human beings to give back to this world in a way
- 35:39that's amazing. And I'm like, there's not a
- 35:43bigger accomplishment than that. I'm sorry.
- 35:45There's not the, you can have one child and not even have them
- 35:49come out that. Well, right?
- 35:51So that means that you did so many things, right that It
- 35:57filtered down into this like spider web of and now we've got
- 36:00oh my gosh, so many grandkids, holy cow.
- 36:03There's so many of us, we've multiplied, we're looking
- 36:07repopulated, the Earth. Yeah, family alone.
- 36:10So it's and that's going down and and my husband's Grandpa who
- 36:16is very, very important to us and we'll get into that, why?
- 36:19But he he is greatest fear. Was a not seeing his grandkids.
- 36:27Get to live their lives, right? Because that was something, he
- 36:29was really looking forward to. And be to not be remembered
- 36:33because there's a statistic that is actually horrible and I hate
- 36:37it and I don't even know if I should say it because I don't
- 36:40know what that well. But basically by the second
- 36:42generation after you've passed away, everybody's completely
- 36:45forgotten about you. Like the stories don't get
- 36:47passed on whatever and that is a huge deal for me.
- 36:50We actually just came out of women's history month, right?
- 36:53The women who tell our stories. And so, I focused a lot on That
- 36:57in my community about what's the story that you're going to pass
- 36:59on what's the stories that have been passed on to you.
- 37:02What? Right and how you show up in
- 37:05your life? That is a story you're telling
- 37:07that is what's going to be remembered, right?
- 37:09If you're just kind of like today's a day, yeah story you're
- 37:14going to tell that's the story. Your kids will pass on or if
- 37:16you're like, it's Monday, right? That's are going to read that
- 37:21you're passing on. So, think about this and now
- 37:24we're going into April, and we're going to start journaling.
- 37:26And it's like, You have to pass this on if this is something
- 37:29that you care about whether it's breaking a cycle, whether it's
- 37:34not passing down a toxic trait, maybe it's whatever, or it's
- 37:38something good or recipes or art that you've done created.
- 37:42Pass it on, don't be forgotten because you were here, make a
- 37:46mark right, you're here. So make them all right.
- 37:51That's right. I love that.
- 37:52There's so many women in the world today who believe that
- 37:55they're insignificant. Yeah, there are and American
- 37:59women. I believe this in my bones, to
- 38:01my bones in American, women are the, are the way out for so many
- 38:04women on this planet and there's women in the UK and like, women
- 38:09are championing each other and stepping up in so many ways and
- 38:12it's just art, it's our time to wrap.
- 38:13Our arms around each other and say you matter, let's go.
- 38:16Let's do this. Let's fix it.
- 38:18Let's Change it and and for you like, that's what I love so much
- 38:23about your life to date because you were only 40, I'm 43.
- 38:28But you, you had a big thing happen and you and Rick used it
- 38:33as an opportunity to say this is where we're out of alignment and
- 38:37this is what needs to change. So we can be the people that we
- 38:39are today for our kids, for other women, all the things.
- 38:43So let's let's lean in there. What was going on in your 20s?
- 38:46Early 20s with you and Rick? When 20 2008 happened, which
- 38:52there was a lag in St, George and across the the country what
- 38:56was going on? That was not working for you.
- 38:59So first of all I think we all remember.
- 39:02Interest only loans mmm-hmm you for that that was amazing.
- 39:07What a great idea that was. So we were living high and large
- 39:12because we were making so much money, my husband's company, he
- 39:16had his one little business that he had started when we got When
- 39:19we had gotten married at your service and then he started when
- 39:22we got married a company called United wood products, and he so
- 39:26Titan stairs, anybody in Vegas, you know, Titan stairs.
- 39:29My father-in-law created Titan stairs and he, and Bill Burke
- 39:32sold that and moved to st. George, and actually started
- 39:35Titan stairs here. But so Rick did not want one of
- 39:38those. So, his brother has one in Salt
- 39:40Lake, and his other brother has won here in st.
- 39:42George. And he thought, why don't?
- 39:43I don't want that because I feel like it only serves this part of
- 39:47the community, right? Because it does.
- 39:48I mean you can only So big. And he says, okay, how can I
- 39:51serve you and the rest of the world were, I'm going to start a
- 39:55wood mill and ship it, right? I'm going to become United Wood
- 39:58Products. So at that time, he had figured
- 40:01out there was something happening at the borders where
- 40:05the Chinese cargo containers were getting held up at the
- 40:10ports and so he's like well I'm going to go to Mexico and his
- 40:13dad who is in the wood industry and amazing Carpenter.
- 40:16He was like you cannot do that. That's Both are quality isn't
- 40:20great, we won't be able to do it whatever so Rick figured out a
- 40:23way to throw some very interesting stories.
- 40:27Wow of us going down into Mexico trying to find a mill.
- 40:32It's that's for another podcast but yeah he found this wood mill
- 40:37and figured out how to get it to the Quality that we needed for
- 40:41America whatever. So Zip.
- 40:45Bam, boom. It was the biggest building
- 40:48industry, right? It was crazy.
- 40:49Everything was going crazy. We were making so much money.
- 40:52We went from being like, nothing brand-new company to making
- 40:56hundreds of thousands of dollars like monthly, right?
- 41:00And so we were making really good money and spending it not
- 41:03saving it spending it and also the funniest part about it was,
- 41:06we were traveling and spending our cash, right?
- 41:09But also putting a lot of things on like, financing things like,
- 41:14We had a Big Dog Chopper that's when that was all in the old
- 41:18Chopper rage, you know, went through and we had the brand-new
- 41:22has four wheeler and we had our house and we had a Jeep and we
- 41:25had my car and we, you know, we just had all these toys.
- 41:28We were just Newly Weds, young having so much fun, right?
- 41:33And then when it all started crashing down around us was
- 41:38honestly, because of the business first, because they
- 41:42went to Big in their overhead. You guys, Guys, this my husband
- 41:46will tell you from the get-go. Why do you need the big signs?
- 41:50Why do you need the flashy? Why do you need you?
- 41:52Don't you need a garage right Titan stairs.
- 41:56Came to st. George.
- 41:57And he built it out of his garage.
- 41:59Like, you don't need all the fancy will.
- 42:01So he and his partner at the time.
- 42:03They did not do that. They got a brand new building.
- 42:05They got a brand new showroom. They got the big sign, right,
- 42:08ever, whatever. So What by the time the crash
- 42:11really started affecting the building industry Here in St.
- 42:15George I think we were six hundred thousand dollars in debt
- 42:21and had all of this inventory. We couldn't sell or anything.
- 42:23Right. So that took the biggest toll
- 42:27that and trying to save ourselves and save face.
- 42:32Were the biggest downfalls for us because we were all putting,
- 42:37all of our cash that we did have into is trying to save things
- 42:41that we had no idea. We couldn't save.
- 42:43We had no idea, right? Buddy, that's listening to this.
- 42:45That went through, this is like, yes.
- 42:47If I would have had that magic 8 ball, right?
- 42:49If I had the crystal ball saying Let It Go, just Let It Go right
- 42:54now, just walk away, let it go right, because you're not going
- 42:57to be able to say that but we didn't.
- 42:58So we had two years of trying to save everything.
- 43:01Well, in on the other side of that, not only are we prideful
- 43:05and we don't want people to know that we were getting everything.
- 43:07Repossessed even though everybody was getting
- 43:10everything. Why would we be so prideful?
- 43:12That we were any different, like know, our Didn't get taken away
- 43:16or just you know downsizing. Yeah like right we had and my
- 43:23husband has so many of his own stories during this time, that
- 43:27our drama, right? But anyway, you were trying to
- 43:30save face. That is the long and short of
- 43:32it. We were prideful we were trying
- 43:34to look good still for who like keeping up with the Joneses,
- 43:38what Jones's? We had a best friend that was
- 43:40had built too many houses and he was trying to get us to buy one.
- 43:44One and they it was a ten thousand dollar payment.
- 43:46It's only a ten thousand dollar payment.
- 43:48You can afford that whatever if we would have done that to oh my
- 43:51God. But so but at the time not even
- 43:55our home and our cars and whatever that we're getting
- 43:58repossessed, we could not go bankrupt, it was not an option.
- 44:02We had six hundred and fifty thousand dollars in debt that
- 44:04were guaranteed by Rick's dad's property that he earned himself
- 44:11and bought because he sold Titan and got to come here and have
- 44:14his Ranch. Right.
- 44:15Well his his Ranch was the what held?
- 44:18The no on our loan. He did not have an option to let
- 44:22it all go. There's no, there were so many
- 44:25lessons going on so many lessons that we could not see at the
- 44:29time, right? Because at the time we were just
- 44:31rounding and in pain and you weren't even 30 yet?
- 44:34Oh, not even 30 yet, we were 25 26, we were and and Rick went
- 44:40into depression from it even and he probably doesn't recognize
- 44:44that I don't. Know if he would have recognized
- 44:45that now even, but I saw it as a wife.
- 44:49And so there is so much from that time because of how he
- 44:52started acting and withdrawing from me and hiding in his office
- 44:56and, you know, like going inward feeling ashamed.
- 44:59Feeling like he's letting everyone down feeling like a
- 45:02failure, right? That turned into not connecting
- 45:05with his wife and not. And so, I have Trauma from that.
- 45:09That actually, interestingly enough, he started playing on
- 45:13his phone, the other night, a game, That he was really super
- 45:17into and it triggered me. Instantly went back to that
- 45:21wife, like newlywed wife begging, her husband to go, hang
- 45:25out with her or begging him to come out of this dark room and
- 45:28he wouldn't and it was, it was interesting.
- 45:31We're trauma hides in you, it does.
- 45:34And I would have never thought about that again, it was just
- 45:36something that happened, but he sat there and he started playing
- 45:39that game and it triggered me. And I was like, whoa, that was
- 45:42weird. Hmm.
- 45:44Yeah. Yeah, that's interesting.
- 45:45It's so great that you're so self-aware to be able to
- 45:48recognize that because a lot of people cannot recognize it that
- 45:51they're being triggered. And from what it's from doing,
- 45:54all this work that I'm doing, honestly, this city is not just
- 45:58for the women that I serve or that, help me.
- 46:02It's, I'm I create these monthly topics for what, specific in my
- 46:06life right now, and it's like, it's human nature.
- 46:10We're not all this unique, like it's only happening to me,
- 46:13right? We are Connected and commonality
- 46:15through Womanhood. So it is happening to all of us.
- 46:18I am having the same fight about loading.
- 46:19The dishwasher with my has been the, some poor woman in Croatia
- 46:22is having with her husband. As a woman in Sydney, Australia
- 46:26is having right? We are all having the same
- 46:28fights were all having the same struggles.
- 46:30So if I'm having it, it's more than likely, a lot of you are
- 46:35having a to, I'm sorry. That's right.
- 46:37Yeah, let's, let's talk about then the pivot, the pivotal
- 46:41moment I know for me that I remember there were two like
- 46:44Very pivotal moments in my life where I was like, man, I need to
- 46:47change. I need to change this.
- 46:48I need to change it now for you and Rick.
- 46:50When did when did you know that you had to shift?
- 46:54You had to change. So we finally did lose our house
- 46:57and we moved into I was I think seven months pregnant with our
- 47:01first baby, we moved into. Luckily his grandparents had a
- 47:04basement that we could move into and they were so welcoming and
- 47:08loving to let us do that and that's his grandpa, who has had
- 47:12such a big, big impression on him and Us.
- 47:15But we moved into their basement and it was so, The meaning like
- 47:23the feeling was we just felt so much shame around it, right?
- 47:26That we had to do this. That we were this old and we
- 47:29should know better and we should have been better and it's like,
- 47:32goes back to what you said that word.
- 47:34This, you're not even a person until you're at least 25 or 26.
- 47:37Your brains been developing and they're expecting us to like
- 47:41come out of high school and get married and have children and no
- 47:46wonder relationships fell because who trained you how to
- 47:49have a relationship? Nobody known pulled You aside
- 47:51and said, this is how you are a mom.
- 47:53This is how you get married. This is this is how your wife.
- 47:56This is how you write. These are the things not the.
- 47:58Look at the classes, you're taking Youth Of America.
- 48:02And is it learning these Concepts that you will need as
- 48:07an actual human being functioning in the world, right?
- 48:10Not, I don't even know what they teach you in college anymore,
- 48:13but I know mine. They didn't teach me anything
- 48:15that I use. Not life skills. 101, not life.
- 48:18Skills needs to be like my He just had our eleven-year-old
- 48:23read, Think and Grow Rich. Mmm.
- 48:26And he gave him a test on it and he paid him $50 for doing it.
- 48:30If you come ask the best, you can do it and he makes my 11
- 48:33year old Nate year old. Get out of the car.
- 48:35Go in the grocery store with the list and the credit card and go
- 48:38grocery shopping. Yeah.
- 48:40And he's teaching them these life skills.
- 48:42I say he because he's the stay-at-home dad right now.
- 48:44Me was mom doing it. Guess what?
- 48:46Mom was doing? I was warming their close-up in
- 48:48the dryer before they woke up so that they could put Put on cozy
- 48:52warm clothes like hello, whose world are they going to succeed
- 48:56in? All right, moms that swarming.
- 48:58Their close-up in the dryer before they go to school and
- 49:01coddling them or Dad's it's like go get the groceries.
- 49:04Yeah you got the wrong milk, go take it.
- 49:08I'm a boy. Mom to a my husband and I have
- 49:10this conversation all the time which is a little off topic but
- 49:13we'll come back around to it. It's just being mindful about
- 49:16the kind of people that we really want to raise and it's
- 49:18writing very like it 8 years old.
- 49:21I mean, Kids, certain parts of the world that are running and
- 49:24managing their families at eight.
- 49:25And nine years old, our kids are more than capable of doing some
- 49:29of these things, we get to treat them that way and show them the
- 49:32way. And I love that a lot of
- 49:33entrepreneurs are doing that today, with our kids, which is
- 49:36really cool. So that's I sorry.
- 49:38I was off topic there, but it's okay point.
- 49:41We were in this basement. I was working in as an emergency
- 49:44dispatcher. So that was my, that was our
- 49:46only income, right? So we have nothing else so which
- 49:50was not a lot at the time because they Were in a, in a
- 49:52freeze, a spending freeze. So it was like, $14, an hour was
- 49:55not much and I couldn't get over time, I couldn't get anything,
- 49:57it was not like a great government job.
- 49:59It was because the economy was crashing, they all the
- 50:01governments were shutting down furloughing all we could do so
- 50:04anyway, that's fine. $14 an hour.
- 50:06That's what we had. So this is what we have to like
- 50:09take a cold hard look. And so Rick started getting into
- 50:11the Dave Ramsey's so he's like, we're going to do the envelope
- 50:14system were going to budget. We're going to live off ramen,
- 50:17noodles. I mean, we are going to just
- 50:19this lifestyle has to become Completely different.
- 50:23And that's that's what happened. It wasn't like a quick fix.
- 50:27Like I'm going to lose 10 pounds, this month.
- 50:29It was, this is a lifestyle. We have got to be okay with what
- 50:34did keeping up with the Joneses. Get us.
- 50:36What did caring, what anybody thinks about us?
- 50:39Where did that get us? Like, are they here paying our
- 50:42bills know? Like they know but it's here.
- 50:45It's us. It is us.
- 50:46We have to make these decisions. So so we sat down and said what
- 50:50are our goals? And what do we want for our
- 50:52life? Okay, so we said, this is what
- 50:55it, what it is, and this is what it looks like, okay, how do we
- 50:57get there? So this is how we get there.
- 50:59We have to change our spending habits.
- 51:01We have to change our livelihood.
- 51:02We have to commit to this. Like it's a lifestyle, right?
- 51:07And that's where it started that, that was the pivotal turn
- 51:11and it was now looking back. That is exactly where when you
- 51:16say, how can you Be so confident in yourself and how can you, you
- 51:22know, everybody to some degree cares?
- 51:24What people think? I mean I don't leave the house
- 51:27without mascara on that's caring what people think, right.
- 51:30But to this point, that is the best part of I stopped caring
- 51:37what people think because where did that get me?
- 51:39Nowhere. And so from that point on we I
- 51:42saw a little note. Sorry.
- 51:43Where's your SLI Google? From that point on.
- 51:45We just did everything we could and I don't know if you It is it
- 51:49bam. Boom this but it lets and boom.
- 51:52That's two minute to turn around B.
- 51:54Bam. Boom.
- 51:55Went from nothing to the secrets of figuring out how to have
- 52:01eight vacation rentals here in St.
- 52:03George and getting our business back on track and traveling the
- 52:08world with our little boys for three years around.
- 52:10You know, 40 plus countries and living totally debt free,
- 52:16Financial Freedom and passive income.
- 52:19So, I'm sorry, we had to zip, bam.
- 52:21Boom, that there's so much more to that story, so much more
- 52:25secrets to how we did it. You know, we got very creative.
- 52:30We got very creative, how we got our first, because we didn't
- 52:32have any credit, right? So, our first condo was a hard
- 52:36money loan because people knew we had cash, because we'd been
- 52:39saving it and saving it, saving it in someone new because my
- 52:42husband talks about money. Someone knew we had 60 gram.
- 52:45That we could hard money loan somebody.
- 52:47Well, the collateral for that. Our first condo.
- 52:50And then the next condo we got we got owner financed by the
- 52:54people who owned it. Like, you can be creative, there
- 52:57are ways to do these things. Be creative, think, outside the
- 53:00box. Here's what it comes down to.
- 53:03There's a lot of people that don't want to go outside the
- 53:05box, because it requires them to want to ask for help.
- 53:08Yes. And to be vulnerable and take
- 53:12risks, and that's the hard thought that they're just going
- 53:15to do it themselves and do it themselves and do it themselves
- 53:18versus what? I'm Hearing you say, is you went
- 53:20and started talking to people and you started negotiating and
- 53:23you started advocating for what it is that you really want and
- 53:26you and Rick are on the same page and you started taking
- 53:30action in that direction which is lended itself to being
- 53:33retired, being a stay-at-home dad in his 30s, he gets to spend
- 53:36time with his kids every single day.
- 53:38What a blessing you're doing what you want to do in your
- 53:42life. You're living a life that's on
- 53:43fire and purposeful and I want to I want to land the show here.
- 53:49And I would love for you to come back and share all the all the
- 53:51secrets will you do that. Now there's a whole part two to
- 53:54this life. Okay yeah we're going to do part
- 53:56two. This is really important that
- 53:58women here that like that one, bankruptcy or losing everything
- 54:02is a big fear for a lot of people and it's not the end, it
- 54:05can be beginning. Yep.
- 54:07So that's a huge, right? It's the beginning.
- 54:09It's not the end, but you got to change.
- 54:11You got a course, correct. Let's talk though if you can in
- 54:14a minute, what is the revitalized?
- 54:17Womanhood world, what does it mean to you today, the
- 54:23Revitalize Womanhood, the whole thing behind it is showing women
- 54:27that were allowed to make choices.
- 54:29In our own lives, were allowed to live intentionally and not
- 54:32for someone else. So what what I just talked
- 54:35about, it's like waking up and not taking the victim.
- 54:38Mentality of all these women who are making jokes online about
- 54:42being a mother and it's so hard that they'd rather throw
- 54:46themselves over a banner. Esther to get a vacation in the
- 54:49hospital or saying that your husband is an idiot and
- 54:52worthless. And all of these accounts that
- 54:54make fun of these kinds of things, know you made a choice
- 54:57to be a wife, you made a choice to be a mother live, your life
- 55:01intentionally and create this ideal life of purpose and
- 55:07impact, right? You have the ability to do that
- 55:10and it starts with your choices and being intentional about
- 55:14them. The perfect way to end the show.
- 55:16I couldn't agree with you more. Yeah, thank you for being here
