- 0:12Speaker 1: Aren't we happy it's Friday? Yeah, it is a Friday,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and ready to head on.
- 0:18Speaker 2: In to the weekend.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Whether your pursuits be recreational, business or just not much
- 0:26Speaker 1: at all, We're glad you.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Joined us this afternoon.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 0:32Speaker 1: under the Zone. My name is Craig Way. I do
- 0:34Speaker 1: thank you very much for joining us. As I always
- 0:36Speaker 1: say on Friday, if today being Friday, the what is
- 0:44Speaker 1: what is today? Jay Carman?
- 0:45Speaker 2: The seventeenth that's right, Yeah, the seventeenth of July.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Football score day seven seventeen.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Oh there you go.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Okay, all right, same score of the Texas Texas A
- 0:54Speaker 1: and M game in College Station a couple of years ago.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Ah right, and long Orange will be back there this point.
- 1:00Speaker 1: But as I started to say, if Friday holds for
- 1:04Speaker 1: you in the traditional sense a Monday through Friday week,
- 1:09Speaker 1: which means that you're off on Saturday and Sunday, good
- 1:13Speaker 1: on you, Good for you. I hope you enjoy the weekend,
- 1:16Speaker 1: whether it's recreational or just relaxing or whatever that might be.
- 1:21Speaker 1: If for those of you who Friday is merely the
- 1:25Speaker 1: middle part of your week, say you start your work
- 1:27Speaker 1: week on Wednesday, and I know some of you who do,
- 1:31Speaker 1: and if that's the case, hopefully we can help you
- 1:34Speaker 1: get over the hump and get downhill to your weekend,
- 1:37Speaker 1: which might be Monday Tuesday. And for those of you
- 1:38Speaker 1: whose work week actually begins on Friday or on Saturday,
- 1:44Speaker 1: well hopefully we can help you through that as well
- 1:47Speaker 1: and you get going on that. Friday, in this case
- 1:52Speaker 1: encompasses several things. Second round of the Open Championship still
- 1:59Speaker 1: underway there at Royal Birkdale. In the big headliner was
- 2:05Speaker 1: not one but two sixty two's shot today. We'll get
- 2:09Speaker 1: to that, which is an all time record tying number
- 2:15Speaker 1: low number for a round of golf in a major championship.
- 2:19Speaker 1: So we'll get to that. We have our usual Friday
- 2:25Speaker 1: offering in the two o'clock hour that would be inconceivable,
- 2:29Speaker 1: which of course on Friday, Jay Carmon, who is our producer,
- 2:34Speaker 1: Friday's withinconceivable means a couple of different things, but one
- 2:39Speaker 1: thing in specific.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Well, it's a good thing the sun's back out today, Craig,
- 2:42Speaker 4: because we're going down to the Sunshine State, the most
- 2:46Speaker 4: flaccid of the lower forty eight to grab the low
- 2:48Speaker 4: hanging fruit. That is Florida man and apparently Florida woman.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Yep, yep, got some Florida woman in there. Some of
- 2:56Speaker 1: us is goofy and ridiculous, and other of it is
- 2:59Speaker 1: kind of scared and tragic a little bit. Uh So
- 3:03Speaker 1: we'll we'll get to that coming up as well. Like
- 3:08Speaker 1: I said, we'll get to the the Open Championship leader word. Also,
- 3:12Speaker 1: this Friday today means that we are we are excited
- 3:17Speaker 1: about this one day removed from the third place game
- 3:20Speaker 1: of the World Cup.
- 3:21Speaker 4: Right, well, you know, don't don't tell Thomas Tuckle that
- 3:24Speaker 4: from England. He said, well, none of the players from
- 3:27Speaker 4: ether side want to play.
- 3:28Speaker 1: And look, it's right, we didn't get to that sound
- 3:31Speaker 1: yesterday from toul did we do We do we still
- 3:33Speaker 1: have that?
- 3:33Speaker 4: Yeah, we we'll be able to bring that up here
- 3:35Speaker 4: in about thirty seconds. It's just, uh yeah, it feels
- 3:40Speaker 4: like a relic. What's the I used this word back
- 3:43Speaker 4: in the fall and you were taking it back by
- 3:45Speaker 4: it It's it feels vestigial.
- 3:48Speaker 3: It feels what vestigial?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Vestigial?
- 3:51Speaker 3: You know, like our appending does a vestige of something
- 3:53Speaker 3: we used to need?
- 3:54Speaker 2: Okay, okay, all right, that's interesting.
- 3:57Speaker 1: It's a relic I got you was asked for first
- 4:00Speaker 1: of all that you know, he has got a lot
- 4:03Speaker 1: of criticism for what happened to England with that one
- 4:05Speaker 1: nill lead heading into the eighty fifth minute against Argentina
- 4:09Speaker 1: in the semifinals on Wednesday, and they had one nothing lead,
- 4:15Speaker 1: but they got incredibly defensive after they got up one nill.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Yeah, there's parking the bus and then there's crash in
- 4:22Speaker 3: the bus.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Did they say, I think it said that after they
- 4:29Speaker 1: took the one nill lead. Argentina had eighty eight percent
- 4:35Speaker 1: of the possession time after the English goal that put
- 4:38Speaker 1: him up one nothing for the rest of the match
- 4:40Speaker 1: eighty eight percent. It's really hard to win when the
- 4:45Speaker 1: other team has the ball eighty eight percent of the time,
- 4:48Speaker 1: as football coaches at a basketball coaches that it's it's
- 4:53Speaker 1: really difficult to win when the opponent has possession eighty
- 4:58Speaker 1: eight percent of the time. Even though they were up
- 5:00Speaker 1: one nothing going into the eighty fifth they gave up
- 5:02Speaker 1: a goal to tie. Then five minutes later they gave
- 5:04Speaker 1: up the go ahead but goal you know, Messy assisted
- 5:07Speaker 1: on both goals.
- 5:09Speaker 2: So and.
- 5:12Speaker 1: The substitutions also include trying to just camp back defensively.
- 5:15Speaker 1: So Tuco's asked, did he get his substitutions wrong?
- 5:19Speaker 5: No, I believe that's just the nature of the game.
- 5:23Speaker 5: As soon as you lose, you get criticized. That's just
- 5:25Speaker 5: what it is. And you get criticized after no one
- 5:31Speaker 5: knows what would have happened if we made different decisions,
- 5:36Speaker 5: So it makes no sense to engage in that and
- 5:39Speaker 5: lose my head. I'm responsible for them. I took them,
- 5:42Speaker 5: so I take the criticism. That's just the way it is. Yeah,
- 5:45Speaker 5: well he knows that obviously, and that comes. It's it's
- 5:49Speaker 5: the manner in which they lost that is drawing so
- 5:52Speaker 5: much heat, not just that they lost, but the way
- 5:56Speaker 5: in which they lost as well. So they lose two
- 6:00Speaker 5: one after having one near league going into the eighty
- 6:03Speaker 5: fifth minutes. So now England plays France tomorrow in the
- 6:08Speaker 5: third place game, and so you're playing for third. Now third?
- 6:15Speaker 5: About two goals thoughts on the third place match. Nobody
- 6:19Speaker 5: of of these players, nobody of French players wants wants
- 6:23Speaker 5: to play for this match. We demand the most of ourselves.
- 6:27Speaker 5: That's just the nature of being competitive. Puts the next
- 6:32Speaker 5: game into perspective. Nobody of of these players, nobody of
- 6:36Speaker 5: French players wants wants to play for this match and
- 6:40Speaker 5: they want to play in the final. We gave everything
- 6:42Speaker 5: to be in the final. Everyone plays to to to
- 6:45Speaker 5: in the World Cup. But it is what it is.
- 6:47Speaker 5: So we have for a day less and and to recover.
- 6:52Speaker 5: But we will we will do it professionally of course, Okay,
- 6:57Speaker 5: take the professional approach.
- 6:59Speaker 4: You could have cleared things up if you know, he
- 7:00Speaker 4: said well before the tournament, nobody wants to play in
- 7:03Speaker 4: the third place match, but he didn't because nobody wants
- 7:06Speaker 4: to play in the third place match tomorrow either.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Especially I would submit to you don't want to play
- 7:13Speaker 1: in the third place match when you've lost the semifinal.
- 7:18Speaker 3: That's the only time you would.
- 7:20Speaker 1: No, I don't think you would want to because you
- 7:22Speaker 1: your heartbroken ever losing the semi file.
- 7:24Speaker 3: But I'm saying that's how you end up there, right.
- 7:26Speaker 1: I'm saying they especially don't want to play in it
- 7:29Speaker 1: when you lose in the semi final.
- 7:30Speaker 4: You know who would have loved to play the third
- 7:32Speaker 4: place match at this tournament? There's a short list, Yeah,
- 7:35Speaker 4: the US YEP, Mexico YEP, Canada YEP, and maybe maybe
- 7:39Speaker 4: a Norway, maybe a cape Verde.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought, I think I saw what somebody tweeted
- 7:46Speaker 1: the other day. Do they really have to play this
- 7:48Speaker 1: third place match? Why don't they just go ahead and
- 7:50Speaker 1: give cape Verde the third place trophy and everybody go home.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Hey, these two teams in the final couldn't beat cape
- 7:56Speaker 4: Verde in regulation. They're gonna be one of the stories
- 7:59Speaker 4: we remember from the thing.
- 8:00Speaker 1: That's great, and that's true, Argentina and Spain both having
- 8:04Speaker 1: to settle for draws, and that's why folks are saying,
- 8:07Speaker 1: you know, maybe you know, maybe maybe they should just
- 8:09Speaker 1: give cape Verde the the third place trophy. As I
- 8:14Speaker 1: mentioned the other day, after the two semifinals, the one
- 8:17Speaker 1: on Tuesday, you know, the Spain France one that Spain
- 8:22Speaker 1: won to nil and just basically suffocated and squeeze the
- 8:26Speaker 1: life out of the explosive French squad and Bope was nowhere.
- 8:30Speaker 2: To be found. They were all over him.
- 8:33Speaker 1: In addition to that, the Wednesday match with England having
- 8:42Speaker 1: the one nothing league get away in the final ten
- 8:44Speaker 1: minutes of the match. Those things that's you think about
- 8:51Speaker 1: that and it's it's incredibly disappointing. To them and they
- 8:55Speaker 1: want and so the teams that lose the semifinals really
- 8:58Speaker 1: don't want to play in that third place match. But
- 9:01Speaker 1: as I pointed out, then it doesn't really come up much.
- 9:06Speaker 1: But as I pointed out, then there are financial reasons
- 9:10Speaker 1: behind that third place match. First of all, FIFA wants
- 9:14Speaker 1: the revenue and the host country, the US wants the
- 9:20Speaker 1: revenue of what the third place because it's going to
- 9:23Speaker 1: be a sellout in Miami.
- 9:26Speaker 3: It's been sold out probably for a year month.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Right right, So people figured that they can't get tickets
- 9:34Speaker 1: or don't want to spend the money to fly to
- 9:38Speaker 1: the New York area.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Figure a lot of England fans though, see the ticket
- 9:42Speaker 4: prices and think, okay, if it's not coming home, I'm
- 9:45Speaker 4: going home.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Right right exactly.
- 9:48Speaker 1: So So there's you know, there's because of that, then
- 9:53Speaker 1: then there might be a little more interesting in the
- 9:56Speaker 1: third place match. Here's here's the other thing that's going on.
- 9:59Speaker 1: And you heard me mentioning, of course, the World Cup
- 10:02Speaker 1: final itself is on Sunday, and as you heard me
- 10:06Speaker 1: just mention, it's in the metropolitan New York area. It's
- 10:10Speaker 1: at met Life Stadium there in their new Jersey Meadlands.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I don't know if you've noticed over the past few days,
- 10:17Speaker 1: but they're having air health quality issues there in the Northeast.
- 10:22Speaker 1: They did play that Mets Phillies game last night, but
- 10:24Speaker 1: you could kind of see the Hayes.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Couldn't you. Yeah, last night I watched some of that game.
- 10:29Speaker 4: I saw. I saw a few of the middle innings.
- 10:31Speaker 4: I saw pop ups not look as routine. I saw
- 10:34Speaker 4: umpires talking to outfielders about visibility.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Yeah, so there's that going on up there. That's in Philadelphia.
- 10:43Speaker 1: In New York, the Dodgers and Yankees open their figures
- 10:47Speaker 1: at second half of the season tonight at Yankee Stadium.
- 10:50Speaker 1: See had that going. By the way, there was one
- 10:52Speaker 1: other player. We didn't mention this the other day when
- 10:55Speaker 1: we were counting the players who did not see action
- 10:59Speaker 1: in the UH in the All Star Game, there was
- 11:03Speaker 1: one we left out.
- 11:04Speaker 4: You shouldn't be Yamamoto. Oh he didn't pitch. No, he
- 11:08Speaker 4: didn't pitch. She's going to pitch tonight, so and and
- 11:12Speaker 4: and the manager. How dare that manager? Yeah, right, right,
- 11:15Speaker 4: he did pitch Robleski for two innings.
- 11:17Speaker 2: He did pitch him.
- 11:19Speaker 4: But yeah, you know ya, Momoto deserves the rest the
- 11:22Speaker 4: guy has pitched. But you know, the equivalent of an
- 11:24Speaker 4: the equivalent of an extra two months of baseball the
- 11:27Speaker 4: way he's been extended in these Dodger World Series runs.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Right, And and he has gotten scant run support this season.
- 11:37Speaker 1: That's not new for him for him, yeah, so uh
- 11:40Speaker 1: and And I've had a lot of people ask me
- 11:42Speaker 1: about that phenomenon as well, and said, how is it
- 11:44Speaker 1: that the best pitcher can't get good run support. The
- 11:48Speaker 1: obvious answer is, a lot of the time, not always,
- 11:54Speaker 1: but a lot of the time, the best pitcher of
- 11:57Speaker 1: a team is going up against the best pitcher of
- 11:59Speaker 1: another team, the team that they're playing. So because they're
- 12:03Speaker 1: they're going up against them, it's hard for their team
- 12:06Speaker 1: to get run support for their number one guy because
- 12:09Speaker 1: they're facing the other team's number one guy.
- 12:11Speaker 4: I also think there's something to when you get to
- 12:14Speaker 4: the dog days of a baseball season, say your team
- 12:17Speaker 4: is maybe falling out of contention, not the case for
- 12:19Speaker 4: a lot of teams in this year's American League in particular,
- 12:22Speaker 4: But there's something to a league average starting pitcher being
- 12:28Speaker 4: extra motivated, being fired up on the day he faces
- 12:32Speaker 4: Yamamoto or Kershaw or school ball or one of these
- 12:35Speaker 4: aces around the league.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Because that's why I wound.
- 12:38Speaker 1: And that's why I said not always, but but you
- 12:41Speaker 1: get the best version of ever get.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Yeah, Whether you get the recognized number one starter being
- 12:49Speaker 1: a Terrek Scooball or or one of the one of
- 12:51Speaker 1: the really good number ones, you might not always see that,
- 12:54Speaker 1: but you're right, you get a highly motivated number two
- 12:57Speaker 1: or number three starter who pitches world. I've seen it
- 13:01Speaker 1: happen two or three times against Yamamoto again. As a
- 13:04Speaker 1: Dodger fan, I watch on average, On average, i'd say
- 13:09Speaker 1: at least one hundred of the one hundred and sixty
- 13:11Speaker 1: two games every year.
- 13:12Speaker 4: I'm going to get there with Nationals Baseball this year,
- 13:14Speaker 4: which I did not expect to do before the season.
- 13:16Speaker 4: But this team and the race, through the thick of
- 13:18Speaker 4: the fight, you can't look away. It's never no lead
- 13:21Speaker 4: is safe, no deficit is too tall.
- 13:24Speaker 1: The National League East and the American League East could
- 13:28Speaker 1: be two of the more entertaining races to watch in
- 13:31Speaker 1: the second half of the season, but the AO West
- 13:34Speaker 1: for different reasons. Yeah, yeah, you find a way to
- 13:37Speaker 1: get through it. When we visited the other day, with
- 13:39Speaker 1: Jared Sandler. You're talking about, you know what, what did
- 13:41Speaker 1: the Rangers need to do to hang in there as
- 13:43Speaker 1: they have that game and a half lead going into
- 13:47Speaker 1: the figurative second half of the season and they have
- 13:51Speaker 1: to start in Atlanta tonight against the Braves, and so
- 13:57Speaker 1: we were talking to him about that.
- 13:58Speaker 2: All right, We're going to do.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Some of the that because there's some trade deadline things
- 14:03Speaker 1: to get to as well. Scotty Scheffler's finished up his round.
- 14:06Speaker 1: He's on the back nine, but there are several guys
- 14:11Speaker 1: behind the leader in this. We'll tell you more about
- 14:14Speaker 1: that coming up. As I mentioned, we do have inconceivable
- 14:18Speaker 1: this hour. We also have some college football to get to,
- 14:21Speaker 1: some NFL notes as well. Glad to have you with
- 14:23Speaker 1: us here on a Friday afternoon on Sports Radio AM
- 14:26Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone, where you can always listen to
- 14:28Speaker 1: us for free on the IR Radio app. How lucky
- 14:35Speaker 1: do you feel, Mary Chavan Carmaner certainly felt like on
- 14:39Speaker 1: that went in the lottery, all that kind of stuff.
- 14:44Speaker 2: We have some lucky stuff going on.
- 14:46Speaker 3: You know, you brought up the lottery.
- 14:48Speaker 4: This is something I've wanted to incorporate to the show
- 14:51Speaker 4: for a long time when I.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Lived in North Dakota.
- 14:53Speaker 4: Yeah, in the smaller, you know, younger brother city to
- 14:58Speaker 4: Bismarck or the twin city is ways Mandan, right across
- 15:01Speaker 4: the river. Okay, there's this shack kind of near the
- 15:04Speaker 4: edge of town, and it's got this big sign.
- 15:09Speaker 3: National Day Calendar.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Headquarters really, and that's the building where if you've ever
- 15:15Speaker 4: said today is national, this day National that day, it
- 15:19Speaker 4: comes from there.
- 15:20Speaker 3: And I was shocked to see.
- 15:22Speaker 4: That when I was there and drove by it often.
- 15:24Speaker 4: The Mandan's got a nice little downtown get outdoor eating
- 15:27Speaker 4: in the summer. Good July fourth, good Christmas lights. Anyway,
- 15:30Speaker 4: it is National Lottery Day according to the folks in Mandan.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Heay, good luck to you if you're out there for
- 15:38Speaker 1: the lottery. This day also holds a different meaning for
- 15:45Speaker 1: me July seventeenth because it was on this day fifty
- 15:54Speaker 1: five years ago. Yeah, fifty five years ago today, seventeen,
- 16:01Speaker 1: nineteen seventy one. It holds for me a pretty significant reason.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I was ten years old at the time. But on
- 16:11Speaker 1: this day fifty five years ago, July seventeen, nineteen seventy one,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I saw my first ever Major League Baseball game.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Wow.
- 16:17Speaker 1: It was in Atlanta at the time, it was called
- 16:20Speaker 1: Atlanta Stadium, later Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Then it got
- 16:23Speaker 1: torn down to make way for the Olympic Stadium that
- 16:25Speaker 1: was then converted into Turner Field, and then of course
- 16:28Speaker 1: that went away. Actually that stadium is still there, it's
- 16:31Speaker 1: just kind of retrofitted for Georgia's State to play football
- 16:33Speaker 1: games there.
- 16:34Speaker 2: In the Braves move to.
- 16:35Speaker 1: The northwest side of town to the Battery where they
- 16:38Speaker 1: built Truist Park, which is a beautiful ballpark up there.
- 16:43Speaker 1: So I've seen games with the Atlanta Braves in all
- 16:47Speaker 1: three of their homes. Atlanta Stadium was built sixty five,
- 16:52Speaker 1: opened in sixty six when the Braves moved there, and
- 16:54Speaker 1: when the Atlanta Falcons started as an NFL franchise, and
- 17:02Speaker 1: it was called Atlanta Stadium upwards inclusive, and when it
- 17:05Speaker 1: hosted the All Star Game, I guess in seventy two,
- 17:07Speaker 1: and then later on it was Atlanta Fulton County Stadium.
- 17:11Speaker 1: And then, like I said, it was torn down to
- 17:14Speaker 1: make way kind of across the parking lot for Turner Field.
- 17:20Speaker 1: You may not have noticed this, but quite often when
- 17:24Speaker 1: Major League Baseball teams or NFL teams build a new
- 17:29Speaker 1: stadium that has to take the place of a stadium
- 17:32Speaker 1: pretty much there on site. They basically kind of started
- 17:35Speaker 1: across the parking lot and tear down the other so
- 17:37Speaker 1: you can still play in the one while they're building,
- 17:41Speaker 1: and then when they get to a point where they
- 17:42Speaker 1: know it's going to be ready for the next season,
- 17:43Speaker 1: then they knock down the older stadium. That's kind of
- 17:47Speaker 1: the way that works. And the Rangers did that with
- 17:50Speaker 1: the old Arlington Stadium and what was originally the Ballpark
- 17:54Speaker 1: in Arlington and then Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, and then
- 17:59Speaker 1: it was Globe Life Park because Globe Life Field, where
- 18:04Speaker 1: the Rangers play now, was built a little further across
- 18:09Speaker 1: from there. There's that Houston history lesson. When Houston got
- 18:16Speaker 1: Major League Baseball starting in nineteen sixty two, they were
- 18:20Speaker 1: known as the Houston callt forty Five's and a big
- 18:23Speaker 1: reason why Houston was granted the franchise. The mayor, Judge
- 18:27Speaker 1: Roy Hawfines was really leaving the charge on this. But
- 18:32Speaker 1: part of the deal that they cut, if you will,
- 18:36Speaker 1: or agreed to with Major League Baseball was that they
- 18:40Speaker 1: would build the first ever domed stadium indoors to play
- 18:47Speaker 1: indoor baseball. Some people know this about that. When Walter
- 18:51Speaker 1: O'Malley wanted to keep the Dodgers in Brooklyn, which he
- 18:53Speaker 1: initially wanted to do, he wanted to build the first
- 18:59Speaker 1: domed stadium in the fifties and have it have a
- 19:02Speaker 1: translucent dome. And what a lot of folks found out
- 19:06Speaker 1: about dome stadiums is you really can't do a translucent
- 19:10Speaker 1: dome or even panels because the grass will die.
- 19:12Speaker 2: It just won't grow.
- 19:13Speaker 1: The Astros discovered that the first year when they had
- 19:15Speaker 1: a lot of the panels opened, the grass just kind
- 19:17Speaker 1: of died, and they ended up replacing it with AstroTurf
- 19:20Speaker 1: the next year put which was.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Developed by the Monsano company.
- 19:24Speaker 1: So they were originally going to do that, but when
- 19:28Speaker 1: the astrodome was built, the Houston Colt forty fives for
- 19:32Speaker 1: three seasons played in a part called Colt Stadium, and
- 19:36Speaker 1: it was ramshackle to say the least. It was not
- 19:40Speaker 1: great and they really struggled, not only to play because
- 19:47Speaker 1: they were an expansion team starting off, but it has
- 19:50Speaker 1: been described as atmospherically, meteorologically the worst place baseball has
- 19:57Speaker 1: ever been played ever because sweltering ninety one hundred degree
- 20:05Speaker 1: temperatures with incredible humidity and mosquitoes as big as your fist,
- 20:11Speaker 1: and it was just a miserable place. I talked to
- 20:15Speaker 1: people who actually attended games there. Our late producer on
- 20:19Speaker 1: the Long Worn Radio Network on our football broadcast, Bill Harwell,
- 20:23Speaker 1: was a greater Houston native. He went to even minor
- 20:25Speaker 1: league games in the late fifties to very early sixties,
- 20:31Speaker 1: sixty and sixty one at Old Buffs Stadium, but which
- 20:36Speaker 1: was located in a different part of town. But Colt
- 20:38Speaker 1: Stadium was built constructed, and the Cold forty five is
- 20:42Speaker 1: played games in that ballpark, which is basically north west
- 20:51Speaker 1: I guess you would say of where the astronom was built,
- 20:53Speaker 1: across the parking lot. So when they built the asterndym,
- 20:57Speaker 1: there's some great sites of you Google search it, you'll
- 21:00Speaker 1: see it. There's some great photos of the astrodome, first
- 21:04Speaker 1: in a skeletal state, then in a more finished state
- 21:09Speaker 1: by the time they get to nineteen sixty four where
- 21:11Speaker 1: you can see Colt Stadium in the foreground, in the
- 21:14Speaker 1: Astrodome in the background, and it's it's pretty cool to
- 21:19Speaker 1: see that going up there behind it. So it was
- 21:22Speaker 1: kind of southeast of where it was, and that's where
- 21:27Speaker 1: they built the Astrodome after that, So you had that there,
- 21:31Speaker 1: and the Houston Colt forty fives played three seasons in
- 21:34Speaker 1: old Houston Colt Stadium, and I said it was miserable.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Harry Carey, when he was broadcasting the singles Cardinals, went
- 21:41Speaker 1: in there one time and broadcast an entire game in
- 21:44Speaker 1: his boxer shorts, wearing nothing but boxer shorts because it
- 21:48Speaker 1: was so hot and miserable and all that.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Right out of the Simpsons. Yeah, so, oh, this is
- 21:53Speaker 3: this is a cool photo.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Oh so you found one.
- 21:56Speaker 4: Found one of the and this, by the way, I'm
- 21:59Speaker 4: looking at the seat in Colt Stadium. There is not
- 22:01Speaker 4: a shaded seat to be found.
- 22:03Speaker 1: No, that's what was brutal. There's no shade in it.
- 22:06Speaker 1: And you see all the multi colors of the sections.
- 22:10Speaker 1: If you're looking at a color photograph, that was where
- 22:13Speaker 1: your seat was located. You were in the teal section
- 22:16Speaker 1: or the magenta section or whatever. And I was told
- 22:20Speaker 1: it was just absolutely miserable to.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Play there.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Does astros teams are those cult forty five teams? Any good? No, man, that's.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Part of it. Yeah, Yeah.
- 22:32Speaker 4: So that Astrodome site's been talked about as a potential
- 22:36Speaker 4: home for Houston hockey.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, who knows. Yeah, And that's an entirely different
- 22:40Speaker 1: kettle of fish. But just to finish the point on
- 22:43Speaker 1: the asterim So it was built and open in sixty five,
- 22:48Speaker 1: and there's always this great story. The first baseball game
- 22:50Speaker 1: that was played in the Astrodome was in April in
- 22:53Speaker 1: nineteen sixty five. It was an exhibition game between the
- 22:56Speaker 1: Astros they newly renamed Houston Astros changed their name from
- 23:02Speaker 1: the Cold forty five's to the Astros, and they played
- 23:06Speaker 1: the Yankees. The Yankees who still had Mickey Mantle with
- 23:12Speaker 1: the team, and one guy who was a I think
- 23:17Speaker 1: a eleven year old bat boy maybe ken was a
- 23:23Speaker 1: batmoy in that game, none other than our own colleague
- 23:31Speaker 1: Keith Morland.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Wow.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Yeah, he got to be a bat boy in that game,
- 23:35Speaker 1: and Mickey Mantle signed a ball for him and misspelled
- 23:40Speaker 1: Keith's name when he signed it to Keith k.
- 23:42Speaker 2: I E T H spelled it.
- 23:44Speaker 1: So years later, after Mickey had retired and Keith had
- 23:48Speaker 1: been't play and they got to know each other and
- 23:49Speaker 1: Keith showed him that ball he said, hey, he said,
- 23:54Speaker 1: will you sign it on the other side, or we
- 23:56Speaker 1: signed another ball and this time spelled my name right.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Mickey looked at that and he could that didn't even
- 24:00Speaker 1: look like my handwriting, he said, but it was him,
- 24:03Speaker 1: so he redid it.
- 24:04Speaker 2: So so then.
- 24:05Speaker 1: The Astros were across the parking lot. That's where that's
- 24:09Speaker 1: where it was built, across the parking lot, and they
- 24:14Speaker 1: played there until the early two thousands when UH and
- 24:19Speaker 1: the Oilers played there as well.
- 24:22Speaker 2: So then what.
- 24:26Speaker 1: NRG Stadium when it was built, it was built across
- 24:32Speaker 1: the parking lot on the other side. The Astrodome is
- 24:35Speaker 1: still up, but it's really in a state of decay.
- 24:38Speaker 1: It's been closed and it's a mess and all this
- 24:40Speaker 1: other kind of stuff. There's been great debate over what
- 24:43Speaker 1: to do with the property. A lot of folks say,
- 24:45Speaker 1: just knock it down. He's knock it down. A feasibility
- 24:48Speaker 1: study showed that it would cost more money to do
- 24:53Speaker 1: a demolition than it would to remodel it to refurbish it.
- 24:59Speaker 1: So that's why they're been talking about possibly seeing if
- 25:01Speaker 1: they could convert it if they were to land an
- 25:03Speaker 1: NHL expansion franchise.
- 25:07Speaker 2: But if you go to.
- 25:10Speaker 1: A Texans game at NRG Stadium, and the first time
- 25:16Speaker 1: I went in it after it had opened up, we
- 25:19Speaker 1: were covering I think Texans.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Training camp.
- 25:25Speaker 1: We were down there covering Texans training camp, and the
- 25:28Speaker 1: first time I saw it, he was either that or
- 25:30Speaker 1: when I was down there for the coaching convention, like
- 25:33Speaker 1: I'll be this weekend.
- 25:34Speaker 2: But I noticed it, and I mentioned on the air
- 25:36Speaker 2: doing the.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Show that afternoon that it dwarfed the astronom, and our
- 25:41Speaker 1: friend chat Hastings, he was on the air wherein time
- 25:43Speaker 1: said not a little bit hyperbolic to say dwarfs, said
- 25:46Speaker 1: check you ever been to it?
- 25:47Speaker 2: You ever seen it? And then he saw it later
- 25:49Speaker 2: said you're right, it does dwarf.
- 25:50Speaker 1: It just towers over it because it was a big
- 25:53Speaker 1: So the astronom is still there, but again its future
- 25:58Speaker 1: has been up in the year for many years now, so.
- 26:00Speaker 2: We'll see what happens.
- 26:01Speaker 1: You'd hate to see it because it was the first
- 26:04Speaker 1: domed stadium. At the time, it was called the eighth
- 26:08Speaker 1: Wonder of the world, So you would hate to see
- 26:12Speaker 1: it be knocked down. Because we've learned over years that
- 26:16Speaker 1: when historic buildings or ones that are perceived as historic
- 26:21Speaker 1: whether they have a historical designation or not. When we
- 26:26Speaker 1: see that, if those buildings are knocked down, be the
- 26:29Speaker 1: ballparks or just governmental structures or business structures, if we
- 26:35Speaker 1: see that, we say, all, what a shame that building
- 26:38Speaker 1: got knocked down. So a lot of people feel that
- 26:40Speaker 1: way about the astronom. The question is, you know, will
- 26:43Speaker 1: they someone or a company or entity step up to
- 26:46Speaker 1: save it and remodel it and refurbish it and those
- 26:50Speaker 1: kinds of things. So anyway, that's you know, that's what
- 26:53Speaker 1: happens when you have, you know, a structure like that
- 27:03Speaker 1: and there's a debate about whether to keep it in
- 27:07Speaker 1: whether you can do anything about it. So that's where
- 27:10Speaker 1: that is right now. But that's also what happens quite
- 27:13Speaker 1: often when new ballparks or stadiums for football teams ballparks
- 27:17Speaker 1: for baseball teams are built. Quite often it's just across
- 27:20Speaker 1: the parking lot from where the existing structure is. In
- 27:24Speaker 1: the case of the Rangers, they didn't knock down what
- 27:27Speaker 1: is now Choctaw Stadium, and what good reason. Parks in
- 27:31Speaker 1: very good shape. It opened in nineteen ninety three or
- 27:33Speaker 1: ninety four, So there's ninety three, I guess it was,
- 27:39Speaker 1: but there's no reason to knock it down. And what
- 27:42Speaker 1: they did was to convert it where they played football
- 27:45Speaker 1: in there. In fact, that is a home facility, a
- 27:50Speaker 1: home stadium for the Arlington Independent School District. They played
- 27:53Speaker 1: high school football games in there, and they played college
- 27:55Speaker 1: games in there as well. The think Army and Air
- 27:57Speaker 1: Force had played and there's a lot of high school
- 27:59Speaker 1: playoff games get.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Played in there.
- 28:01Speaker 1: The year we had the pandemic, when they finished it
- 28:05Speaker 1: off in twenty twenty, when they finished off the high
- 28:08Speaker 1: school football playoffs, they had a Christmas Eve game in there.
- 28:12Speaker 1: They had a Christmas Day game in there, which normally
- 28:14Speaker 1: didn't have with high school football. But the six A
- 28:17Speaker 1: state championships weren't decided until January of twenty twenty one
- 28:20Speaker 1: as a result of that. So that building still has
- 28:25Speaker 1: great purpose. And I will say this, it was a
- 28:28Speaker 1: great ballpark, great ballpark, one of my favorite ones. Just
- 28:31Speaker 1: too freaking hot. You're just baking in there in the summertime.
- 28:36Speaker 2: It was miserable. So Lowlife Field.
- 28:40Speaker 1: While not being that esthetically wondrous on the inside in
- 28:46Speaker 1: terms of its baseball viability, has the one thing that
- 28:49Speaker 1: none of those other ballparks including the old arlingtoln Ctadium
- 28:52Speaker 1: have and that is air quality. You know, it's the
- 28:56Speaker 1: nicest part of air quest. Speaking of air quality, that's
- 28:58Speaker 1: gonna be part of are inconceivable? Coming up on a
- 29:01Speaker 1: Friday next year on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone,
- 29:09Speaker 1: second hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM
- 29:11Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone. Glad to have you with us
- 29:14Speaker 1: here on a Friday afternoon, Craig Way alongside the producer
- 29:19Speaker 1: Jay Carman, Glad you can join us. Second round of
- 29:26Speaker 1: the Open Championship has been underway since about three o'clock
- 29:30Speaker 1: our time this morning, still underway right now, but I
- 29:34Speaker 1: think it's a pretty safe bet even with some golfers
- 29:36Speaker 1: still on the course that Lucas Herbert, if he doesn't
- 29:42Speaker 1: have the lead to himself, he'll probably be sharing it
- 29:44Speaker 1: after shooting at eight in sixty two today now having
- 29:48Speaker 1: said that bryceon de Shambo is in the hunt there.
- 29:53Speaker 1: He had taken it to five under through eleven holes
- 29:56Speaker 1: of his round on the back nine. This after de
- 29:59Speaker 1: Shambau had really really struggled, as we know, in the
- 30:03Speaker 1: prior three major championships, Shambo had failed to make the
- 30:07Speaker 1: cut in any of the three earlier majors, the Masters,
- 30:12Speaker 1: the PGA, the Masters of course in Augusta, the PGAD
- 30:15Speaker 1: Aeronomy in Philadelphia outside of Philadelphia, and then the US
- 30:19Speaker 1: Open as well so at Shinnecock Hills. So he had
- 30:25Speaker 1: missed out on making the cut at all of those.
- 30:30Speaker 1: And it was pointed out by many, including by our
- 30:32Speaker 1: own Cameron Parker, who was entre to do an Open
- 30:35Speaker 1: Championship preview on Wednesday, that if Shambo missed the cut
- 30:44Speaker 1: in this Open Championship, he would become the first golfer,
- 30:48Speaker 1: at least in modern history as far back as anyone
- 30:50Speaker 1: could research, to be a multiple major winner, because Bryson's
- 30:57Speaker 1: went what a US Open and a PGA, if I'm
- 31:00Speaker 1: remembering correctly, I think so.
- 31:03Speaker 2: I think that's right.
- 31:04Speaker 1: I think he's one of you anyway, a multiple major
- 31:08Speaker 1: championship winners.
- 31:09Speaker 3: That right, both times at the US Open.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Two time US Open winner wing.
- 31:14Speaker 4: Foot in twenty twenty and then Pinehurst twenty four. Okay,
- 31:19Speaker 4: but hasn't won a PGA, not Nope, those are only
- 31:23Speaker 4: two majors, Okay, all right. Nevertheless, he's been second twice
- 31:28Speaker 4: at the PGA.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Yeah, so, but he's won multiple majors the two US Opens,
- 31:35Speaker 1: and he would have become the first curing pro in
- 31:40Speaker 1: history to win multiple majors and then miss the cut
- 31:43Speaker 1: in all four majors in a given year. Well, that's
- 31:45Speaker 1: not going to happen. In fact, he's in the thick
- 31:48Speaker 1: of the fight. However, it did prompt even prior to
- 31:54Speaker 1: the start of the tournament, which was yesterday. Sir Nick Faldo,
- 31:58Speaker 1: as we know, a back to back winner. I believe
- 32:06Speaker 1: that Augusta and then of course had won the British
- 32:11Speaker 1: Upper Championship, had won that as well. Sir Nick, who
- 32:15Speaker 1: then followed it up with a long broadcast career at
- 32:18Speaker 1: CBS and retired from CBS and was living back in
- 32:22Speaker 1: England but working for Sky Sports, the network over there,
- 32:26Speaker 1: kind of their version of ESPN, and he had some
- 32:31Speaker 1: pointed words about britt to Shamba strategy or as he
- 32:37Speaker 1: called it, they'd lacked thereof.
- 32:39Speaker 6: That's a whole put of the story. How the supers
- 32:42Speaker 6: does that live? Then come over and can't do it,
- 32:45Speaker 6: so that's that's all another storm. Then go back to
- 32:47Speaker 6: be supers. Does he has I'd say it to his face,
- 32:52Speaker 6: has zero clue as strategy. I mean, you don't, he said,
- 32:56Speaker 6: it last year and I think on TV, I'm going
- 32:59Speaker 6: to go out and attack the so well. I've never
- 33:02Speaker 6: attacked to lynch. You thread it, don't you? You feed
- 33:04Speaker 6: it down the fairy. It's really important. You look at
- 33:07Speaker 6: humps and bumps and what everything. If I send it
- 33:09Speaker 6: over and feed it, it nudges back into play. You
- 33:11Speaker 6: don't think we I just bomb it down. There can't
- 33:13Speaker 6: see where I'm going. It's twenty yards wide. Oh yeah,
- 33:16Speaker 6: good luck. I mean on all this, even if you're fantastic,
- 33:19Speaker 6: it lands on a corner of a divot, you still
- 33:21Speaker 6: miss the fairwell. So you've got to think, how do
- 33:23Speaker 6: I get it on.
- 33:23Speaker 2: The short grass? It is so important?
- 33:25Speaker 6: And here stand up and just keep bombing away and
- 33:27Speaker 6: they think, oh they got you get it further down.
- 33:31Speaker 6: But you can be completely blocked out on a link.
- 33:35Speaker 1: So Falo had those comments to make meantime de Shambo,
- 33:41Speaker 1: who wound up shooting a three hundred round of sixty
- 33:44Speaker 1: seven on the first day. That key word was strategy
- 33:48Speaker 1: that you heard Faldo discussing, or the lack of it.
- 33:52Speaker 1: So you tell me if this was just a happy coincidence.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Use of the word strategy in his post round interview.
- 34:01Speaker 7: You know, I think you've got to be a lot
- 34:03Speaker 7: more strategic out on the golf course. And I feel
- 34:05Speaker 7: like I did a really good job today of being
- 34:07Speaker 7: incredibly strategic and focused, super hard and placing it in
- 34:11Speaker 7: the right places. Besides eighteen, I placed the ball in
- 34:14Speaker 7: some some good areas, but just he get more fairways.
- 34:16Speaker 7: Other than that, I felt like my strategy was nice today.
- 34:20Speaker 3: Okay, But other than that, my strategy.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Strategy was it In the old Saturday Night Live skit
- 34:26Speaker 1: when Will Ferrell was playing George W. Bush President Bushes strategy,
- 34:33Speaker 1: he would say, so the strategy there. So after saying
- 34:38Speaker 1: what he said and then hearing what the shambo had
- 34:44Speaker 1: to say in his post round interview yesterday, Sir Nick
- 34:48Speaker 1: Falder came back.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Today with a little more.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Clarification, if you will, explanation on what exactly his original
- 34:59Speaker 1: comments were all about.
- 35:00Speaker 2: The Bryson things. Strategy thing has gone too far as usual. Yes,
- 35:04Speaker 2: I'm an analyst, I'm on a podcast.
- 35:06Speaker 6: I say something fine, But number one, I'm a big
- 35:10Speaker 6: fan of Bryce and let's get that out. We text
- 35:12Speaker 6: each other through the season, what have you. I have
- 35:15Speaker 6: respect for him and his game, but it is fair
- 35:18Speaker 6: to say, over the last couple of years he hasn't
- 35:20Speaker 6: shown much strategy on the Links golf course. And I
- 35:24Speaker 6: believe I know a little bit about strategy from my day.
- 35:28Speaker 6: But interestingly Day one threw the strategy thing into the ring,
- 35:33Speaker 6: talked about it, did it, played it, shot a great score. Now,
- 35:37Speaker 6: if he keeps doing that and the way the golf
- 35:38Speaker 6: course is playing hard and fast as we all know,
- 35:41Speaker 6: I think we all agree strategy will be key to
- 35:44Speaker 6: becoming the champion golf of the years. So I do
- 35:47Speaker 6: wish him all the best. If he keeps it going
- 35:49Speaker 6: and keeps playing well, maybe he will be right there
- 35:52Speaker 6: on Sunday to be the champion Golfer of the year.
- 35:56Speaker 2: All the best.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Good little clarification there by the way, people who've listened
- 36:05Speaker 1: to this program before have heard me say this. Of
- 36:08Speaker 1: the four major championships, this is my favorite one.
- 36:12Speaker 3: Why is that.
- 36:14Speaker 1: It's a variety of things. One, it's settled in the
- 36:23Speaker 1: country of the birthplace of the game, because it's pretty
- 36:28Speaker 1: much accepted golf was invented pretty much by the Scots
- 36:32Speaker 1: really going all the way back well into like the
- 36:36Speaker 1: fifteen hundreds, and then they started playing playing it on
- 36:43Speaker 1: twelve whole courses. In fact, the first ever Open Championship
- 36:46Speaker 1: took place before the American Civil War started. It was
- 36:51Speaker 1: eighteen sixty, the year before. It was even several months
- 36:55Speaker 1: before Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States
- 37:00Speaker 1: president in November of eighteen sixty. So it started at Prestwick,
- 37:06Speaker 1: which is still a viable it's been in the open
- 37:10Speaker 1: rotation press twig. In the day, Prestwick was a twelve
- 37:14Speaker 1: hole golf course and the first few championships were played
- 37:17Speaker 1: on twelve hole courses. But it is when it started
- 37:22Speaker 1: in eighteen sixty. It is the oldest championship in any
- 37:31Speaker 1: sport other than the America's Cup, which began in eighteen
- 37:34Speaker 1: fifty one, the yachting race, but in any sport where
- 37:40Speaker 1: a ball is used, football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, the
- 37:46Speaker 1: Open Championship in Great Britain is the oldest.
- 37:49Speaker 2: That's part of it. I like that.
- 37:53Speaker 1: It's a completely different test. Now some folks put that
- 37:58Speaker 1: at the bottom because of that very reason. They don't
- 38:01Speaker 1: like that gets you out of what's supposed to be
- 38:03Speaker 1: the regular rhythmic game of golf. Well, no golf actually
- 38:07Speaker 1: began under those conditions, whether they be links or or
- 38:10Speaker 1: even you know, space side. If it's played in in
- 38:14Speaker 1: you know, on upcountry and not played you know, in
- 38:17Speaker 1: the highlands and not played along the coast, it's still
- 38:21Speaker 1: a different test of golf, obviously with a lot more
- 38:25Speaker 1: wind than.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Trees to have to deal with. So I like the
- 38:31Speaker 2: difference in the test. Now.
- 38:33Speaker 1: One thing I do think is a little bit presumptuous,
- 38:35Speaker 1: but I understand with the RNA the way that they
- 38:39Speaker 1: call it. As you just heard Sir Nick Faldo say,
- 38:42Speaker 1: the champion golfer of the world. So you're the champion
- 38:45Speaker 1: golfer of the year. So you are the champion golfer,
- 38:49Speaker 1: Well you are for that tournament. It doesn't mean you're
- 38:52Speaker 1: the champion about the you know. I don't know if
- 38:56Speaker 1: Scotty Scheffler will hold on to the number one ranking
- 38:59Speaker 1: by the end of the year, depending on eyes. He's
- 39:02Speaker 1: only won one tournament this year, the first one, and
- 39:05Speaker 1: we'll see if he wins another major, I think he
- 39:07Speaker 1: would hold on to it.
- 39:08Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 39:09Speaker 1: He's had a lot of several second place finishes, so
- 39:11Speaker 1: there's a chance to still be the champion golfer of
- 39:14Speaker 1: the year. But in Great Britain, that's what the RNA
- 39:17Speaker 1: recognizes in the Open Championship as the champion golfer of
- 39:23Speaker 1: the year.
- 39:24Speaker 2: So there it is.
- 39:25Speaker 1: But that's been my favorite of the four Majors. You
- 39:31Speaker 1: enjoy all of them, but that one just happens to
- 39:33Speaker 1: be a personal favorite of.
- 39:34Speaker 4: Mine, even though it's a bit challenging to watch some
- 39:38Speaker 4: of it live in the States given the time the times.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, it's weird what they used to do
- 39:46Speaker 1: when it was televised. I think by ABC back in
- 39:48Speaker 1: the day, they take delighted it and you could do
- 39:53Speaker 1: that back in the day, not in the twenty four
- 39:56Speaker 1: hour news and sports cycle in which we currently exist. Anyway,
- 40:01Speaker 1: you can't really do that. You find out in advance.
- 40:07Speaker 1: I kind of liked the fact. Now, did I get
- 40:10Speaker 1: up at three o'clock this morning to watch it?
- 40:11Speaker 2: No? I did not. I have before. I have before,
- 40:17Speaker 2: And I.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Remember my daughter and I got up to watch the
- 40:22Speaker 1: World Cup one year. I think it was it might
- 40:28Speaker 1: have been twenty ten when it was in South Afery.
- 40:30Speaker 1: I was thinking maybe it was in Germany, maybe two
- 40:31Speaker 1: thousand and two or whenever, you know whatever, we got
- 40:36Speaker 1: up very very early to watch the US play. I
- 40:40Speaker 1: have gotten up as early as like six in the
- 40:43Speaker 1: morning to watch it. I can probably tell you that
- 40:50Speaker 1: tomorrow morning when I wake up in my hotel room
- 40:54Speaker 1: in in Houston, and Sunday morning, I'll probably watch a
- 41:01Speaker 1: little of it while still in bed, probably a little
- 41:03Speaker 1: bit of it before having to get up and do
- 41:05Speaker 1: the things I got to do. I have a production
- 41:07Speaker 1: meeting at noon with a run through of the Hall
- 41:09Speaker 1: of Honor banquet tomorrow, and then Sunday, of course, I
- 41:12Speaker 1: had the panel discussion with the with the thirteen Division
- 41:17Speaker 1: one FBS coaches on to see if I can remember them.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Now here we go.
- 41:20Speaker 1: We're gonna try it again. I missed one each in
- 41:22Speaker 1: the last two days, I know, all right, So here
- 41:24Speaker 1: we go s m U, TCU, North Texas, Texas Tech U,
- 41:31Speaker 1: TEP Baylor, Texas, Texas State, Texas A, and m.
- 41:38Speaker 2: RICE Houston SAM Houston UTSA.
- 41:45Speaker 3: There you go.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Managed to get all thirteen of them anyway, thank you.
- 41:50Speaker 1: So you know, all all thirteen Division one FBS college
- 41:56Speaker 1: football coaches will be up on the stage there at
- 41:59Speaker 1: the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, and I'm
- 42:02Speaker 1: going to moderate a panel discussion with those and ask
- 42:04Speaker 1: them some questions on that that'll be later in the afternoon,
- 42:07Speaker 1: like five thirty five, five thirty, right, check it and see.
- 42:12Speaker 1: But I'll probably, yeah, wake up first thing in the
- 42:17Speaker 1: morning and probably flip on, flip on the television to watch.
- 42:21Speaker 3: It, have yourself a little English breakfast.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Maybe maybe, Yeah, that's not a bad idea. So anyway,
- 42:29Speaker 1: that's a big part of the reason why I enjoy
- 42:34Speaker 1: the Open Championship. So I don't mind it being several
- 42:39Speaker 1: hours in front of us. I can fit it to
- 42:42Speaker 1: the morning quite often. In the case of today, we're
- 42:45Speaker 1: obviously doing the program while while the second round is
- 42:50Speaker 1: wrapping up. But we can tell you a little more
- 42:52Speaker 1: about it, and we will as we go forward. We
- 42:54Speaker 1: got some baseball notes to get you, you know, as
- 42:58Speaker 1: invariably I do, you know, I wind up, you know,
- 43:02Speaker 1: going around the garage to get to the barn, and
- 43:04Speaker 1: I was telling stories about ballpark construction. I did mention
- 43:08Speaker 1: that today is the fifty fifth anniversary of the first
- 43:11Speaker 1: ever Major League games, but there was a little more
- 43:13Speaker 1: context to bring you on that. I'll do that, but
- 43:15Speaker 1: we've got some other baseball notes to get too, as
- 43:17Speaker 1: we continue on a Friday afternoon here on Sports Radio
- 43:20Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the Zone, where you can always listeners
- 43:23Speaker 1: for free on the iHeartRadio app.
- 43:26Speaker 3: I can't say when you look at me that way.
- 43:34Speaker 1: That is the great great Carol Canon, one of the
- 43:40Speaker 1: greatest song writers.
- 43:43Speaker 2: In music history.
- 43:46Speaker 1: Her list of hits recorded by others is very long
- 43:54Speaker 1: and distinguished. This particular track off of her Tapestry album
- 44:01Speaker 1: Tapestry was sitting on.
- 44:04Speaker 2: Top of the album charts, I believe.
- 44:07Speaker 1: For five months in nineteen seventy one rock and Roll
- 44:13Speaker 1: Hall of Famer as a performer and as a songwriter,
- 44:16Speaker 1: and this was one of them. You've got a friend
- 44:19Speaker 1: that's on there so far away, just tabus, But I
- 44:22Speaker 1: am curious as to your decision to bump back with this.
- 44:26Speaker 3: You nailed that.
- 44:26Speaker 4: This particular song was on the top of the US
- 44:30Speaker 4: Billboard Top forty on the day you went to your
- 44:32Speaker 4: first Major League Baseball game, Aha Whiches Today in nineteen
- 44:36Speaker 4: seventy one.
- 44:37Speaker 1: July, I said that the song that I remember that day,
- 44:43Speaker 1: I was listening to it, and I remember at the time,
- 44:45Speaker 1: I think it was number three on the charts, but
- 44:48Speaker 1: I remember it was a song by Tommy James, originally
- 44:52Speaker 1: of Tommy James and the seandale's called Dragging the Line,
- 44:56Speaker 1: and I'll let you bump back for the next break
- 44:59Speaker 1: with Dragging the Line.
- 45:00Speaker 2: That was.
- 45:01Speaker 1: That was a song. I remember my sister had the singles.
- 45:03Speaker 1: She's four years older and me. She had She had
- 45:06Speaker 1: the single of Dragging the Line.
- 45:08Speaker 4: Yep, this looks like according to the source I'm looking at,
- 45:11Speaker 4: it was it was in the top ten that week,
- 45:13Speaker 4: but who knows.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it depends where you ask. Yeah, yeah, at one
- 45:16Speaker 1: point or another, that sort of thing. And I think
- 45:18Speaker 1: at one point it actually got the number one as
- 45:20Speaker 1: a single, but it was it was rated pretty highly
- 45:26Speaker 1: at the time. But anyway, yeah, July seventeen, nineteen seventy one. Yeah,
- 45:29Speaker 1: it was fifty five years ago today.
- 45:34Speaker 2: And I know.
- 45:36Speaker 1: And completely understand and in large measure agree with those
- 45:40Speaker 1: you would say that idiot way he did, the more
- 45:43Speaker 1: useless crap rolls around in his head, the things that
- 45:48Speaker 1: he remembers.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Uh, I don't disagree with you. I would say this.
- 45:56Speaker 1: We all have touchtone moments that remember the first time
- 45:59Speaker 1: we did this, or the first time we did that,
- 46:02Speaker 1: or a first date or you know, when we met
- 46:05Speaker 1: the significant other in our lives or whatever. We do
- 46:09Speaker 1: that as much as a lot of baseball. Obviously, a
- 46:14Speaker 1: lot of folks can kind of remember the actual first
- 46:17Speaker 1: time they went to baseball. You remember the first major
- 46:19Speaker 1: League baseball game you went to. It doesn't have to
- 46:21Speaker 1: be the date. I'm just saying you remember it well.
- 46:23Speaker 4: I remember, I think it was two thousand and eight
- 46:27Speaker 4: at well, this maybe in two thousand and seven, because
- 46:29Speaker 4: NAT's Park came up around two thousand and eight. My
- 46:31Speaker 4: first baseball game I was with both my grandfathers at
- 46:34Speaker 4: RFK Stadium, So that was great.
- 46:36Speaker 2: That was cool.
- 46:37Speaker 4: And the next game I remember is my first walk
- 46:40Speaker 4: off I ever saw, which was a June, a hot
- 46:44Speaker 4: June night in twenty twelve, think it was June twenty second.
- 46:47Speaker 4: The Nats walked off the Mariners after trailing five to
- 46:50Speaker 4: one going into the bottom of the ninth.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Here's the beautiful thing about all that you can track
- 46:55Speaker 1: the actual date. This wonderful site called Baseball Reference has
- 47:01Speaker 1: pretty much every game that's been played all the way
- 47:04Speaker 1: back into the eighteen hundreds, I think, by date. Even so,
- 47:10Speaker 1: I knew that I did not initially remember the exact
- 47:17Speaker 1: date of the first major league baseball game I went to,
- 47:21Speaker 1: and and incidentally, yesterday was National hot Dog Day.
- 47:26Speaker 2: So was it yesterday or day before?
- 47:28Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 47:28Speaker 3: I think it was two days ago because we.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Had hot dogs.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Linda and I, Justie, we observed these You mentioned the
- 47:34Speaker 1: national day blah blah blah calendar headquarters are there in Mandan,
- 47:39Speaker 1: North Dakota.
- 47:40Speaker 3: That's right, don't you forget?
- 47:42Speaker 1: Okay, So it was National hot Dog Day a couple
- 47:45Speaker 1: of days ago. We even said, why wouldn't they have
- 47:48Speaker 1: it on the day of the All Star Game, except
- 47:50Speaker 1: you got to remember the All Star Game floats.
- 47:52Speaker 4: And by the way, National hot Dog Day has to
- 47:54Speaker 4: share with National Gummy Worm Day.
- 47:56Speaker 3: Who decided that.
- 48:00Speaker 2: I have a gummy worm story too. I'll get to
- 48:02Speaker 2: you later.
- 48:05Speaker 1: So I knew it was in July of seventy one.
- 48:09Speaker 1: I was ten, not yet eleven years old, and I
- 48:13Speaker 1: remembered very specific details about the game because the game
- 48:17Speaker 1: involved the team that I root for.
- 48:21Speaker 2: As folks know, I grew up in North Carolina. I
- 48:23Speaker 2: grew up in Greensboro, So.
- 48:24Speaker 1: We were about five hours, give or take either way
- 48:29Speaker 1: from the two major league ball clubs who played. One
- 48:34Speaker 1: was the Washington Senators who are now known as the
- 48:37Speaker 1: Texas Rangers.
- 48:38Speaker 2: They moved.
- 48:40Speaker 1: They moved to Arlington for the seventy two season, and
- 48:45Speaker 1: I had a really good friend growing up in Greensboro
- 48:49Speaker 1: named Riley Culclasure and Riley. That summer of seventy one,
- 48:54Speaker 1: he and his parents went up to Washington, d c.
- 48:58Speaker 1: And he got to see the Senators played the Chicago
- 49:01Speaker 1: White Sox. And even though I would not trade my
- 49:06Speaker 1: experience for seeing my team the Dodgers play the Braves
- 49:10Speaker 1: that same summer, In fact, I think it was in
- 49:12Speaker 1: that same month. I can always look it up under
- 49:13Speaker 1: Baseball Reference as that Senator's White Sox game. I was
- 49:19Speaker 1: always kind of envious to the fact that he got
- 49:22Speaker 1: to see the Senators before they moved to Arlington and
- 49:24Speaker 1: became the Texas Rangers, when they had Frank Howard, also
- 49:29Speaker 1: known as the Capital Punisher with the way he could
- 49:32Speaker 1: belt out home runs, who started his career as a Dodger,
- 49:34Speaker 1: and then he was traded to the Senators for Claude Ostein,
- 49:38Speaker 1: who was a big part of the Dodger rotation then
- 49:40Speaker 1: winning a World Series in sixty five and an Nash
- 49:43Speaker 1: League penn in sixty six. But I remember this about
- 49:49Speaker 1: the first Major League game I, you know, like I said,
- 49:52Speaker 1: people have asked me quite off of why, how, what
- 49:55Speaker 1: in the world possessed you to become a Dodger fan,
- 49:58Speaker 1: because people who've listened to the program, I know for
- 50:00Speaker 1: some times I'm not a bandwagon or I didn't jump
- 50:02Speaker 1: on them since they started winning them winning the world
- 50:05Speaker 1: titles in twenty twenty. No, this goes back to nineteen seventy.
- 50:11Speaker 1: I was nine years old, I wasn't ten, and my
- 50:14Speaker 1: dad had been telling us stories at bedtime about a
- 50:18Speaker 1: variety of different things. Me and my younger brother. We
- 50:21Speaker 1: shared a bedroom, and among those were baseball stories. My
- 50:24Speaker 1: dad was a Yankees fan, like a lot of America
- 50:27Speaker 1: was back in the day, especially in the fifties, in
- 50:30Speaker 1: the forties and fifties, and he was a Yankees fan.
- 50:33Speaker 1: They loved Joe Debajo, and then they love Mickey Mantle,
- 50:36Speaker 1: Whitey Ford, Bobby Richardson. You know, we mentioned all these
- 50:41Speaker 1: great Yankees, the Big Chief, Allley Reynolds, you know, all
- 50:45Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. So he but he would tell
- 50:48Speaker 1: me stories about the World Series and how he went
- 50:54Speaker 1: to two World Series when he was in the Army
- 50:57Speaker 1: station in New York City. My dad during the Korean
- 51:01Speaker 1: War was a map maker, So he was a cartographer
- 51:04Speaker 1: and a map maker, and he did he did things
- 51:06Speaker 1: like that, say, he tried to get transferred to see
- 51:10Speaker 1: action in Korea. We all told him like he must
- 51:12Speaker 1: have been nuts, because said, considering how brutal it was
- 51:15Speaker 1: over there, and how brutally cold, and how brutally hot
- 51:17Speaker 1: it could get, and all that other kind of stuff,
- 51:19Speaker 1: he said, if I was going to be in the army,
- 51:21Speaker 1: And he actually joined the army because he said, in
- 51:23Speaker 1: those days, if you joined a branch of the military,
- 51:26Speaker 1: you were only required to serve three years, but if
- 51:28Speaker 1: you were drafted, you had to serve four. And he
- 51:31Speaker 1: figured he had gone to art school right out of
- 51:35Speaker 1: high school at North Carolina State, they had an art
- 51:38Speaker 1: college art school, and he figured, I'm probably going to
- 51:42Speaker 1: get drafted anyway, so i might as well join. And
- 51:44Speaker 1: he didn't want to be in the Navy, and he
- 51:46Speaker 1: didn't want to he didn't want to be in the
- 51:47Speaker 1: Marines of the Air Force. So he joined the Army.
- 51:50Speaker 1: And so he was in for three years. And after
- 51:53Speaker 1: being stationed for a while, and after doing his basic
- 51:56Speaker 1: and station for a bit at what is now Fort Carson, Colorado,
- 51:58Speaker 1: out in Colorado Springs. His skills set as an artist
- 52:03Speaker 1: were recognized by those in command, so he was transferred
- 52:08Speaker 1: to New York City and was a map maker. Of fact,
- 52:13Speaker 1: that's where he met my mom in New York. My
- 52:15Speaker 1: mom grew up in New Jersey City, New Jersey. But
- 52:19Speaker 1: he was a Yankees fan, and he would tell us
- 52:21Speaker 1: stories about the Yankees and the Dodgers in the World Series.
- 52:25Speaker 1: And he got to go to two World Series in
- 52:26Speaker 1: nineteen fifty two and fifty three at the cost of
- 52:30Speaker 1: one dollar with his giid. He got to sit out
- 52:34Speaker 1: in the outfield seats for a buck and saw the
- 52:37Speaker 1: Yankees and Dodgers play a game in nineteen fifty two
- 52:39Speaker 1: and saw it again in fifty three. So he would
- 52:41Speaker 1: tell you all these stories, and you know, and I
- 52:44Speaker 1: would ask him questions about the Dodgers. Why were they
- 52:46Speaker 1: called the Dodgers, and he said, well, it goes back
- 52:48Speaker 1: to the early twentieth century when they had a lot
- 52:51Speaker 1: of trolley cars running through Brooklyn, so they were kind
- 52:53Speaker 1: of known as the trolley Dodgers to keep from getting
- 52:54Speaker 1: run over.
- 52:55Speaker 2: And then they just Dodgers.
- 52:56Speaker 1: And then I saw pictures of them and they were
- 52:58Speaker 1: blue and white and blue is my favorite color, and
- 53:00Speaker 1: all this stuff. And then I opened my first pack
- 53:02Speaker 1: of baseball cards in that spring of nineteen seventy, and
- 53:05Speaker 1: the very first card was Bill Russell, the Dodger shortstop,
- 53:10Speaker 1: and I was hooked at that point Bill Russell, who
- 53:14Speaker 1: I think was from Sand Spring, Oklahoma, from the Tulsa area, but.
- 53:21Speaker 2: That's where I was hooked on. So I was a
- 53:23Speaker 2: Dodger fan.
- 53:24Speaker 1: And so there was throughout that nineteen seventy season, and
- 53:26Speaker 1: the Dodgers finished second to the big Red Machine of
- 53:28Speaker 1: Cincinnati and the Nash League West that year, and then
- 53:31Speaker 1: seventy one they were in a real tennant battle with
- 53:34Speaker 1: the Giants for the West. And I'd said to my
- 53:38Speaker 1: dad on a couplication, do you think we could go
- 53:39Speaker 1: to a Major League baseball game sometime? And my dad
- 53:44Speaker 1: told me the name. He said, well, you know, Atlanta's
- 53:46Speaker 1: like five hours away, and we didn't really care to
- 53:48Speaker 1: go to Washington to see a baseball game. He said,
- 53:50Speaker 1: I'll see you. And then all of a sudden he
- 53:53Speaker 1: tells me in July one day. You know, I'm a
- 53:56Speaker 1: ten year old kid. What plans do I have?
- 53:58Speaker 2: Right?
- 53:58Speaker 8: You know?
- 53:59Speaker 1: He said, We're gonna go see the Braves play next week.
- 54:03Speaker 1: So I was excited about that. You know, Hank Karen
- 54:04Speaker 1: was an established star and all that. We're going to
- 54:06Speaker 1: go to Atlanta Sea or who are they playing. They're
- 54:09Speaker 1: playing the Dodgers, So I was really excited then. So
- 54:14Speaker 1: my dad and myself and my younger brother drive down
- 54:18Speaker 1: with my dad. A man who worked with my dad
- 54:20Speaker 1: and his son. We were all around the same age
- 54:22Speaker 1: the boys were. We drive down to Atlanta on Friday.
- 54:25Speaker 1: We get there on a Friday night. We stay in
- 54:27Speaker 1: a hotel. The next morning, we're playing catch in the
- 54:30Speaker 1: hallway of the hotel with our baseball gloves and stuff,
- 54:32Speaker 1: and we meet a scout from the Phillies who was there.
- 54:36Speaker 1: He showed us his scouting card and all that. So
- 54:39Speaker 1: then we go to the game and the Braves play
- 54:41Speaker 1: the Dodgers and it's on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, warm,
- 54:45Speaker 1: but I didn't really notice the heat much. He'd gotten
- 54:50Speaker 1: some pretty good seats and apparently he got the seeds
- 54:55Speaker 1: from Ernie Johnson Senior. So people to watch, you know,
- 54:59Speaker 1: inside the NBA see Ernie Johnson. Ernie Johnson Jr. His
- 55:02Speaker 1: dad was a Braves broadcaster working with the Lake. Milo Hamilton,
- 55:05Speaker 1: who later of course did the Astros and also done
- 55:08Speaker 1: the Cubs, White Sox and uh and and so Ernie
- 55:14Speaker 1: John my dad knew him through somebody anyway. But we
- 55:16Speaker 1: got we had tickets, the five of us, and we're
- 55:18Speaker 1: sitting like on the mezzanine level directly behind home plate
- 55:22Speaker 1: and they're great seats. First battle leading off the game
- 55:25Speaker 1: for the Dodgers, I think it was Marty Wills and
- 55:27Speaker 1: he hits a routine pop up to shallow center. But
- 55:31Speaker 1: depth perception to a ten year old, you don't know that.
- 55:35Speaker 1: So the minute left his bat, I jump out of
- 55:36Speaker 1: my seat and say it's out.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Of the park.
- 55:39Speaker 1: Everybody looked at me. It's a routine flyball, this shallow
- 55:42Speaker 1: left center. They so we watched the game at the
- 55:45Speaker 1: time of a life. The Braves won the game ten
- 55:48Speaker 1: to nothing. Yeah, they sure did. Hank Aaron, Hank, Aaron,
- 55:51Speaker 1: Ralph garr and Daryl Evans, all who hit home runs
- 55:54Speaker 1: for Atlanta. My hero for the Dodgers, Willie Davis I
- 55:57Speaker 1: think went oh for three in the game. Yeah, well
- 56:01Speaker 1: for four, oh for four in the game. So didn't
- 56:05Speaker 1: strike out, no, no, and he was fast. He was
- 56:08Speaker 1: one of the fastest players in baseball at the time.
- 56:10Speaker 1: But the Dodgers lost to nothing. But I really wasn't
- 56:13Speaker 1: too heartbroken. That's such a great time. Here's the odd thing.
- 56:15Speaker 1: My dad takes us to dinner that night. We go
- 56:18Speaker 1: to this really nice steakhouse in underground Atlanta. At the
- 56:22Speaker 1: time was really hopped and bopped. It's a little less
- 56:24Speaker 1: attractive these days, but we go to it. We go
- 56:27Speaker 1: to dinner at the steakhouse there in Atlanta, and then
- 56:31Speaker 1: the next day the Giants come into town and they
- 56:34Speaker 1: play a doubleheader, and you know, we had a five
- 56:38Speaker 1: hour drive back to Greensboro, but my dad got tickets
- 56:40Speaker 1: to the game with the Giants as well.
- 56:41Speaker 2: He's the double hitter.
- 56:43Speaker 1: So I'm excited we and I said, can we stay
- 56:45Speaker 1: for both games?
- 56:46Speaker 2: He said, we'll see.
- 56:47Speaker 1: Well. The first game went twelve innings and the Giants
- 56:52Speaker 1: won five to four, which is interesting to think about.
- 56:55Speaker 1: At the end of the season nineteen seventy one, the
- 56:56Speaker 1: Giants ended up winning the West over the Dodgers game,
- 57:01Speaker 1: and we got.
- 57:01Speaker 2: To see one of the Giants win that. So we
- 57:06Speaker 2: leave during the second game.
- 57:11Speaker 1: But Willie Mays, in the twilight of his career, playing
- 57:13Speaker 1: for the Giants, pinch hits a home run, so I
- 57:15Speaker 1: got to see that. And then the next year, by
- 57:19Speaker 1: the way, when I went up to visit the Italian
- 57:20Speaker 1: relatives up in New Jersey, I talked my dad into
- 57:24Speaker 1: going to see the Mets and the Expost and Willie
- 57:25Speaker 1: Mays was back with the Mets or back.
- 57:27Speaker 2: In New York.
- 57:28Speaker 1: He had been New York Giants, of course before they
- 57:29Speaker 1: moved to San Francisco and they traded him to the
- 57:32Speaker 1: Mets late in his career. Got to see him have
- 57:34Speaker 1: a triple and a single and almost tied the game
- 57:36Speaker 1: of the ninth with.
- 57:36Speaker 2: A home run, So that was really cool.
- 57:38Speaker 1: You have all these baseball memories and things, but it
- 57:40Speaker 1: was fifty five years ago today. The first Major League
- 57:43Speaker 1: baseball game I ever saw was Dodgers and Braves at
- 57:49Speaker 1: what was then known as Atlanta Stadium, and it was
- 57:53Speaker 1: a nationally televised game on NBC, and in those days,
- 57:56Speaker 1: that's the only baseball we got in North Carolina. It
- 57:58Speaker 1: was a Saturday afternoon game of the week. Gallley and
- 58:00Speaker 1: Tony Kubak. Kirk Gally was my first play by play
- 58:03Speaker 1: broadcasting hero. You know that, because he could do anything
- 58:08Speaker 1: he would do the Rose Bowl, the Super Bowl, he
- 58:12Speaker 1: did the Final Four. He had the outdoor program, The
- 58:15Speaker 1: American Sportsman, which was on ABC, where you could go
- 58:19Speaker 1: fishing with Ted Williams or hunting with somebody else.
- 58:21Speaker 2: He was. He was.
- 58:24Speaker 1: Quite the accomplished broadcaster. But I've always remembered this as
- 58:28Speaker 1: being fifty five years ago today, and I think I
- 58:31Speaker 1: remembered a few of the details. Anyway, Willie Davis went
- 58:34Speaker 1: over four, not three. But anyway, I do remember Hank
- 58:37Speaker 1: Karen hitting a home run.
- 58:39Speaker 3: We did better than I did.
- 58:40Speaker 4: I'm remembering my first game because I remembered, thinking back
- 58:44Speaker 4: two thousand and seven, it was the first game.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Did you find it?
- 58:47Speaker 3: I found it because I remembered two details.
- 58:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:50Speaker 3: The Nationals won six to three.
- 58:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:52Speaker 4: Chad Cordero, who was then called the chief YEP, got
- 58:55Speaker 4: the save. I had remembered somebody hitting a three run
- 58:59Speaker 4: home run that didn't.
- 59:01Speaker 3: Happen in the game.
- 59:02Speaker 4: But that seems to be the detail that I was
- 59:05Speaker 4: off On July thirty first, two thousand and seven, there
- 59:09Speaker 4: you go at RFK Stadium, the last place Nationals and
- 59:14Speaker 4: the last place Cincinnati Reds. Ken Griffy Junior played for
- 59:17Speaker 4: the Reds went zero for five with two strikeouts. Ryan
- 59:20Speaker 4: Zimmerman three RBIs in the game, and I didn't realize this.
- 59:26Speaker 3: Ryan Langrahan's pinch hit for the Nationals.
- 59:29Speaker 2: Wow.
- 59:29Speaker 4: And just a couple months ago I called his son's
- 59:34Speaker 4: by district playoff baseball game.
- 59:37Speaker 1: I did Ryan Langerhan's by district playoff game when he
- 59:40Speaker 1: played for Round Rock. And then I saw Ryan play
- 59:44Speaker 1: for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans when he was in the
- 59:47Speaker 1: Brave system. And of course his dad, John very Well
- 59:52Speaker 1: had been the head coach there obviously at Round Rock.
- 59:56Speaker 1: But yeah, that's that's really cool. I think about it.
- 59:59Speaker 1: And again, who like baseball Reference can help you find
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: your you know, the baseball memory that you have it.
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: And it's so crazy that you don't need Baseball Reference
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: to remember. I was twelve years old the only time
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: I saw Ichiro Suzuki. Oh wow, okay, and him and
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: the Mariners raced out in front five to nothing. Adam
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: Dunn was ejected for arguing a check swing call in
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: the first inning.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: Who would have been a long one quarterback had he
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: not been able to make him baseball.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Same thing with Matt.
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: Holliday and played in my first ever game I watched
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: as a member of the Reds yea five years earlier.
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: But then in the ninth inning, a line drive to
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: the ankle of Mariners closer Brandon League sent him to
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: the bench injured after one batter, and the Nationals took advantage.
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: Wilson Ramos hit a three run homer in front of
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: a mostly empty stadium to beat the Marritors.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: I actually saw part of a game at RFK. Was
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: two thousand and five, their first year there. Yes, yeah,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: I took my kids on a vacation and we were
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: doing the annual vacation thing and my wife Laurie and
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: uh my youngest Jason, they were going to fly in
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: and meet us at the beach. But I took Andy
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: and Haley and Julianne and we went. We actually went
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: hiking in the mountains in Virginia and we went we went.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: Up to DC and we did the Smithsonian and the Monuments.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: We did that thing.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: But we went to see the Nationals and the Pirates
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: at RFK and it rained and there was there was
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: like an hour and fifteen minute delay, and of course,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: you know, old RFK was just not a pleasant place
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: to be during a rain delay, and we toughed it
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: out through the first rain delay, and we set up
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: and it got maybe three innings in and then the
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: skies open up and again, and I had young kids
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: with me, and like, that's it.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: We're done. Well.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: We were going back to the hotel and get ice
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: cream Sundays and get a good night's sleep.
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: June twenty eight, two thousand and five.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: That's what it sounds like. So did it get rained
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: out or no? They ended up playing the game. We
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: heard later they had like a two hour delay or something.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Then they came back and played and finished the game, right,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: I think.
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: They came back and finished the game after Yes, they're
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: multiple delays.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Yep, yep. And I was like, no, I gotta do.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Eighty nine degree rainy nights. Sounds like a DC summer.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: Miserable, just be human and rainy and all that kind
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: of stuff. But that's what baseball references. You can find
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: out where you were, uh, you know, place and time
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: for that sort of thing. I've done that with several
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: games that I've been to over the years. All right,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: We've got more coming up as we continue here on
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: this Friday afternoon on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: Here's difference. I feel fine, I'm talking about p SMI.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: I'm going to take my time.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: I'm having a good chime.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: That was that It was a big hit when I
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: went to my first Major League game fifty five years
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: ago today. But I did not know that Will You
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Still Love Me Tomorrow was the number one song in
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: the country, right, And that's the one you play if
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: I Feel the Earth Moved from Yeah, I Feel the
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: Earth moved. That's right exactly. She had several big hits
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: off that Tapestry album. Here's what apparently has been a
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: big hit. Beer sales during the World Cup. None of
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: us should be surprised by this now if you're talking
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: about it, and I'm not just talking about at the
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: venues in the stadiums. For example, bars sales in Boston
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: have re of Ellis's worded reportedly have needed emergen seed
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: deliveries to keep taps from running dry on some of
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: the game days. Fans down a total of two one
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: hundred and ninety thousand stadium beers during the six matches
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: in Philadelphia alone, two hundred and ninety beers. You know what,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: It also makes you wonder about let me see if
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: I can find this the beer sales in Canada, right
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: a ozer, you know, you know what the beer sales
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: would be like. Beer sales had been struggling globally, and
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: they say right now, it's unclear whether the World Cup
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: can reverse a trend. Despite having three countries and sixteen
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: cities as co host this year, in the US, beer
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: consumption has fallen steadily for a decade, according to the Brewers.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Association, has nothing to do with the baseball team.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: Brewers Associated, a trade group for craft brewers, and Canada
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: has seen a similar decline. According to the National Statistics,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: consumers have been buying less regular beer and more quote
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: unquote wellness drinks, with many consumers cutting back on alcohol
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: for health reasons as well. But beer has been way
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: up on that in bars, restaurant, stadiums, and other venues.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: A fourteen percent rise in US host cities compared to
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: the same period last year, according to the Beer Institute.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: It's like to tell somebody I graduated from the Beer Institute.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: The bump extended beyond host cities. Sales were up four
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: percent nationally as well. So a guy in Boston they're
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: talking about at the Sam Adams Boston tap Room on
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: the first day that the Scottish fans were there. Quote
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Jim Coke, the brewer, founder and CEO of the Boston
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Beer Company which makes Samuel Adams said, quote at one
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: point we were pouring them a Sam Adams Boston Logger
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: every twelve seconds. What a wonderful group of people. And
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: here's another thing, he said, it was good. I didn't
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: see a single soul on their phone. They had a
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: beer in their hand and they were talking to each other.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: They were doing what beer is meant to do, which
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: is helping people enjoy each other's company.
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: Tell you what to see a lot more people on
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: your phone at the World Cup Final. Unfortunately, it's going
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: to be a more corporate crowd, a lot of video
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: on that, a lot of influencers. Yeah, we'll be back
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: to wrap up hour number two on thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 1:06:16Speaker 8: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 1:06:19Speaker 8: Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: Third and final hour of the program here on Sports
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: Radio A. I'm thirteen hundred Zone back with you for
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: this final hour. Craig Wade joined by greaser Jay Kerman,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: and the final, our final round of the Open Championship,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: you're being completed. The guy who is on top of
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: the leader board is Lucas Herbert of Australia shot an
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: eight under round of sixty two. Now this is really
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: kind of weird because it actually overshadowed another sixty two
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: that was shot today and that was Sam Burns.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: But his sixty two.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Merely took him from plus three to minus five. He
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: was three over. He shot seventy three yesterday, the runner
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: up in the US Open. And then Burns comes up
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: with an eight under round of sixty two today, so
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: he's five under, but Herbert the lead at minus eight
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: after shooting an eight under round of sixty two. The
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: two sixty twos today, one from Herbert and one from Burns,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: equaled Pro golfs all time record for low score in
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: a round in a major championship. Sixty two is the
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: lowest score ever posted in any major championship, and it
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: was done twice today on a day that was really
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: the conditions were good for ball striking. The putting was
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: a different issue. Like Scotty Shefferd really struggled with a
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: putter today, not out of the tournament by any stretch,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: but still with a lot of chasing to do because
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: he simply couldn't make putts. Lucas Herbert made putts all
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: the way to the last hole, where he missed a
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: putt for Parr.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: That would have given it.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: He would have finished at sixty one, which would have
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: been the all time lowest round standing alone, but for
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: the bogie there on the last hole, and so here
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: he was chasing history, and he was asked for his
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: emotions as he was coming down the stretch getting to
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: eighteen and coming down there with an opportunity if he
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: made parr to shoot sixty one.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: It was it's kind of odd feelings.
- 1:09:02Speaker 9: I mean, it's the second round of tournaments, so you're
- 1:09:04Speaker 9: trying to push as far ahead as you can. I'm
- 1:09:08Speaker 9: half a golf sneak, is a golf geek as well,
- 1:09:10Speaker 9: so I knew all the records, I knew the numbers,
- 1:09:12Speaker 9: I knew what people had shot and I was so
- 1:09:14Speaker 9: I was very aware of that, But yeah, I sort
- 1:09:18Speaker 9: of didn't. I didn't really know where to focus. So
- 1:09:20Speaker 9: it was kind of like just keep going about doing
- 1:09:22Speaker 9: what I'm doing, and obviously doing something well so.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: It was.
- 1:09:27Speaker 9: It was kind of funny, like I said to pee
- 1:09:29Speaker 9: walking up eighteen, like, you know as well throwing my
- 1:09:32Speaker 9: phone in the in the bath for the next three
- 1:09:33Speaker 9: days because it's just going to be lit up this afternoon.
- 1:09:35Speaker 9: So I was like kind of enjoying almost the peace
- 1:09:38Speaker 9: of just been out there and playing golf before you know,
- 1:09:40Speaker 9: whatever this weekend throws at me.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: I like that I might as well throw my phone
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: in the bath, given what it happened. So, as I mentioned,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: he missed the par putt on eighteen, and had he
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: made it, he would have had the record sixty one.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: Who was asked did he have some thought? And there's mind?
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: What were his thoughts as he stood over that pot
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: trying to finish the round with the sixty one.
- 1:10:06Speaker 9: I don't know, Like I sort of I kind of
- 1:10:08Speaker 9: thought it was a left side pot I actually hit.
- 1:10:09Speaker 9: I thought I hit a really good part. I felt
- 1:10:11Speaker 9: like I just jagged left on me a little early.
- 1:10:15Speaker 9: There was nowhere near the worst shot I hit for
- 1:10:16Speaker 9: the day. No, any of the worst pot I hit
- 1:10:18Speaker 9: for the day.
- 1:10:18Speaker 10: I was.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: I was pretty happy with it.
- 1:10:21Speaker 9: The nerves were going, but I thought I handled him
- 1:10:23Speaker 9: well and yeah, just it wasn't meant to be, So
- 1:10:27Speaker 9: it was a strange one knocking that in and you know,
- 1:10:29Speaker 9: no one untied the record, but also feeling like, you know,
- 1:10:32Speaker 9: that might have been one of the best chances we've
- 1:10:34Speaker 9: had to shoot sixty one as.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: Well, no doubt. Sam Burns, i mentioned, also shot sixty two.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: But what that did was to take him from plus
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: three to minus five. So that's an improvement of eleven
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: shots in one round.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: That's rare to have that happen.
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: He was asked for the differences what led to the
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: eleven shot improvement today.
- 1:10:58Speaker 10: I don't know if I could tell you what the
- 1:10:59Speaker 10: difference eleven shots was. I think today I had a
- 1:11:03Speaker 10: lot of things go my way, which is obviously what
- 1:11:05Speaker 10: you need to shoot sixty two. But I feel like
- 1:11:08Speaker 10: I justcated myself a little a few more chances on
- 1:11:11Speaker 10: the front and we would convert and then got off
- 1:11:13Speaker 10: to a nice start there on the back of nine.
- 1:11:15Speaker 10: So it was really tough finish yesterday, just kind of
- 1:11:18Speaker 10: a careless you know, to bothy the last three holes.
- 1:11:22Speaker 10: But yeah, I'm very proud of that round.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: Of golf today.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: So Burns is in a crowd, to be certain, but
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: at five hunder par.
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: He is.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: In contention at three off the pace. So how comfortable
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: and confident is Sam Burns heading into the weekend.
- 1:11:41Speaker 10: I think it feels a little bit different in the
- 1:11:43Speaker 10: sense of links golf, y'all. Ever really feels super comfortable
- 1:11:46Speaker 10: in links golf, just because there's so many different variables
- 1:11:48Speaker 10: you're playing for. So I think it makes you focus
- 1:11:51Speaker 10: a little bit more on each shot. There's just so
- 1:11:54Speaker 10: many options that you really have to make sure you're
- 1:11:56Speaker 10: kind of committing to one thing. And so I like
- 1:11:59Speaker 10: that aspect of it. And I'm still learning to accept
- 1:12:02Speaker 10: where the balls end up here. I think it's a
- 1:12:04Speaker 10: tough thing to do sometimes here and you feel like
- 1:12:06Speaker 10: you hit a good shot and it catches a slope
- 1:12:08Speaker 10: and goes in the side of a pup bunker and
- 1:12:10Speaker 10: then you have to hit it backwards. But hopefully none
- 1:12:13Speaker 10: of that this weekend.
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good good way to describe it.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: So he matched the lowest round Herbert and Burns in
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: men's major history with that sixty two. So Lucas Herbert
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: at minus A. Jackson Suber, who yesterday had a good
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: round today shot one under. Not a bad round, but
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: he shot yesterday. Subert who had the lead after shooting
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: the five hundred sixty five yesterday and one under sixty
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: nine a day, so he's only two back at minus six.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: Cameron Young shot sixty seven for the second straight day,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: so he's at six off the six under three off
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: the pace. I mentioned Burns at minus five, and Matt
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: Wallace and Bud and Thomas Detrie and Robert mcintog keep.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: An eye on him.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: Alex Fitzpatrick Cameron Parker mentioned him as a dark horse,
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: Matt Fitzpatrick's brother. All of these guys at minus four.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: Francesco Mullinari Ryan Girard, so that's when Pierson Cooty in
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: case you're wondering, after shooting sixty seven yesterday, had an
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: even par around of seventy today, so minus three still
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: in the still in JJ Spawn who won the Open
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: a year ago that the US Open in at minus three.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: Shane Lowry, a former Open champion, at minus three. Ludvig Oberg,
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: the Swede who played collegiately at Texas Tech at minus three,
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Cameron John of Australia at three under. Daniel Brown, the
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: guy who doesn't mind lighting up a city on the
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: golf course, the darts.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: What did he say?
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: Eight and around that his success might depend on how
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: many of the he's allowed to smoke an around sorry mom.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Victor Perez at minus three anyway, those those golfers there.
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: Rory three under today as well, he'll he'll probably make
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: the cut.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Yeah, you'd have a long way to go after what
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: happened to him yesterday. But I think what the projected
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: cut was going to be plus three?
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: I thought as of earlier, I thought it was hovering
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: right around even parr and Rory got himself into the
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: red numbers today.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Okay, it's you know what it is. It's top seventy
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: plus ties.
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: So yeah, right now it's sitting at plus one.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: So those who you can say are going to miss
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: the cut, Cameron Smith, Billy Horschell, JT Posten, Aaron Rye,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: the PGA champion, Andrew Novak, Henrik Stenson.
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: Wyndham Clark despite it not being a road game.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, right exactly. Matt Fitzpatrick, Matt's fitz patri Matt Fitzpatrick,
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: who was the popular choice of a lot of people.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: Justin Rose who's apparently injured.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, he's had a hard time Jordan Speith. You know,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: these are the guys who are not going to make
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: the cut. So but as we mentioned, Rice and to
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: Shamba did make the cut, so he avoided that ignominious
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: distinction of being the only man in major championship golf
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: history to win multiple majors and then miss all four
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: cuts in one season. That did not happen to him.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: So the Shambo in contention in the round, and a
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: guy who you know, had had shot three hundred sixty
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: seven and had a bit of an up and down
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: round today. So anyway, there's those guys and and Scotti
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: Scheffler still in the hunt, but a lot of work
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: to do. Now, what this is going to do is
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: it's going to bring about the question of the staying
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: power of Lucas Herbert. Who's a guy shot eight under
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: sixty two? Can he shoot that well again tomorrow? He
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: got out early today, posted that number before most of
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: us got out of bed.
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: Myself included.
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: Myself included it was already I wake up, I turn
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: on the TV. My goodness, dude shot sixty two while
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: I was sleeping. But the question will be because he's
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: not a guy with that major championship pedigree.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: Will he be a guy who.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: Has the staying power to stay in contention that label
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: that's put on you at the start of a major
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: championship if you're in the lead, either after the first
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: day or or even the second the thirty six hole lead,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: can they make it stand up throughout the course of
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: a weekend. Will guys like a cam Young be able
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: to be in contention, you know, or Burns who's been
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: in contention, or can Scheffler fight his way in tight
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: So anyway, those are those are some of the things
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: to keep in mind. All right, We've got some baseball
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: notes to get to. We'll do that coming up next
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: when we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen under the
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: This particular song.
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: For many and many, I mean millions of people who
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: have enjoyed the Beatles is like number one on their
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: list all time a day in life, and this rolls
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: it back to around. You jumped in in the middle
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: of the song, which is fine. He gets kind of
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: to the action portion.
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I wanted to get to the rolling out of
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: bed and getting ready to go.
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: That's you know.
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: I was thinking about that early when you talked about
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: your your hotel plan in Houston, getting up, getting the coffee,
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: getting the British open on that. You're right though, This
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: is uh, this is one of the first Beatles songs
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: I really loved as a kid.
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: I had this CD Sergeant Pepper.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: Did you really.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: It was? It's it's largely viewed as being, you know,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: an absolute trend setting.
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: The album was a concept album.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: What they did where Paul McCartney said, basically what they
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: had just come off touring again and they were done
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: with touring, and he said, you know, we can do
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: an album where we can just kind of almost be
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: alter egos. We don't have to be ourselves, and he
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: came up with this whole concept of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: Hearts Club Band, and and it was a mixture of
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: a variety of not only musical taste, but also of
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: songwriting and performance genius as well. When you think about
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: you know, they had just a simple rock and roll
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: tune coming off of the initial opening number of Sergeant
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, having Ween go Star do
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: the vocals on with a little help from my friends.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: You know, they had some ballading ballad, things like She's
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: leaving Home on it. You had, you know, a real
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: McCartney influenced tune like when I'm sixty.
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: Four that's sung at family functions on my mom's side
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: because of one of my uncles. Every birthday, party or wedding,
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: he'd give us a speech in the form of that song. Really,
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: when he turned sixty four, everybody returned him to favor.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: Okay, okay, that's very cool my great uncle. Actually, I understand.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: I thought about that when when I hit that number.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: And he also had, you know, a funny little The
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: when I'm sixty fourth thing, by the way, was an
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: Toney came up with when he was a teenager, like
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: in the fifties, but it was never put in the forum,
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: was never finished as a song, never put on a
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: record until he you know, until he worked it all
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: out as they started doing this, But it had this
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: variety of things. The I was the one to say
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: a lovely rita about the meter maid, you know that
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: that's thing. And then being for the benefit of mister
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: Kite is a John Lennon song that he got from
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: a circus poster from eighteen forty three. He happened to
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: see this old circus poster being for the benefit of
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: mister Kite and Harry the Horse dancing the Waltz and
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: the Henderson's from Pablo fankas fair Will undertake all these
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: summer sets, as they called him, the Summersaults, that sort
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: of thing, And so it had all of those different things.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: It had George Arrison's influence with his Indian Eastern music
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: Within You, Without You and uh and then of course
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: the reprise of Sergeant Memmer in the last tune was
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: what you just played there.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: With a Day in the life.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: It used to be my favorite his it is kind
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: of fallen from the number one spot and the favorites
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: probably third or fourth now.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: Of my favorite Beatle tunes.
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: That's all the whole catalog, not just this album.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, it's my favorite one on the album,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: but it's it's probably third and fourth all time for
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: me on in their catalog.
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: How about album wise where Sergeant Pepper because you probably
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: have I'm guessing you've Abby wrote it one I do.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: Sergeant Pepper will probably.
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: Be third White album two.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: No, it's kind of down the list for me a
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: little bit. Uh.
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: No, Rubber Sol Rumbers, which contains my all time favorite
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: Beatles song in my life.
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: That's probably my number one as well.
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: You feel free to borrow from this theme was played
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: at my wedding four years ago. Uh, but yeah, it's uh,
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: it's up there. And Rubber Sol had a lot of
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: good stuff. And I'll tell you I'd probably put Revolver
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: ahead of the White album because the Revolver uh has
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: a lot of conceptual things that Rubber Soul signaled the
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: start of their evolution from just yeah yeah, she loves you,
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: you know the boy girl loves yeah, yeah, all that stuff. Uh,
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: it started the evolutionary process. Revolver really shook you right
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: into that, into that process. And then the next one
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: after that was Argia Pepper. So yeah, I don't dislike
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: the White album. There's a lot of songs I like
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: on like Wow my guitar gently weeps.
- 1:22:48Speaker 10: Uh.
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: I like Savoy Truffle, I like glass Onion. There's a
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: back in the USSR. There's a there's some revolution Revolution
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: not Revolution nine No. And it's some little mixtures of
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: tunes and things like that that have it shading down
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: a little for me. On on the list wild Honey Pie,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: you know, I like Honeypye the one that was kind
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: of the Hollywood BLUESI ish tune, the McCarty a wild
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: honey Pipe not so much. I didn't I like long, Long, Long,
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: took me a while to get used to that one.
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: The George Harrison went.
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: Helter skelter on that not so much.
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: I'm okay with it.
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: Rocky Raccoon like that, Blackbird really really like that.
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: Don't Pass Me by.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: Ringo actually wrote that in the early sixties, but it
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: didn't make its way onto album. And it's the only
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: Richard Starkey tune, along with Octopus' Garden that ever made
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: it on the Beatle albums, so uh yeah. But he
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: actually came up with that in the early sixties, so
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: that was that was one as well.
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: There.
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: Julia, which is a ball of a very slow one
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: about his mother that Lendon wrote about his mother, is
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: a nice enough song. I Will a love song by
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: Paul McCartney's a really good one. I think that's my
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: mom's favorite Beatles song. Happiness is a warm gun Eh,
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: not so much. Let's see what else. The Adventures of
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: Bungalow Bill. I don't even remember how that one goes.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: It's kind of silly and so anyway, it's anyway. Those
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: are those are some of those. But I there's I
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: like the White album. It's just I like several other
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: albums better than that one.
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: I wanted to get some baseball notes here. We're getting
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: close to the trade deadline. The trade deadline is a
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: week for Monday, and so there were a lot of
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: questions about what's gonna happen with a trade deadline status.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: Never have I encountered, just in watching and following Major
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: League Baseball, never have I encountered so much uncertainty over
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: which teams are going to be buyer, which ones are
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: going to be sellers. And that's clearly because of the
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: tightness of the races. I mean, if you look, if
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: you're unfamiliar with it, and you say, well, how tight
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: is it? In the American League East, the race are
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: up three games on the Yankees. Now the Red Sox
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: are ten back, but they won nine in a row.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: And more importantly, in the case of the Red Sox,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: they may be ten out of the division race, but
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: they're only a half game out of the third wild card.
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: I haven't heard from our guy who was outside the
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: stadium cursing at Breslo in a while.
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right about that.
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: Because I stumbled upon more of him as our social
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: media apps to do after we played that rant on
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: the show.
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: You still have the rent, you still have the rent,
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: the clean version, Yeah, nute, Okay, all right, So the
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: Yankees are our three back of Tampa Bay and they've
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: got some big series kind of The Yankees and Dodgers
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: start tonight in New York.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: The race.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: You're going to be playing the Phillies next week. We
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: mentioned the Red Sox are only a half game out
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: of the wildcard, which also means that the Orioles are
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: only a game and a half out of the last
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: wildcard and the Blue Jays are only two back the
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: defending American League champs.
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: They're only two out of the last wildcard spot.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: And as has been proven over the years, get into
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: the playoffs and you can do the rest. Get into
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: the playoffs and then you can be dangers. So yeah,
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: here's the Red Sox fan. Jake did a really good
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: job of cleaning this up, which he needed to do.
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: This was an industrial cleanup job.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: It really was.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: Where he was he was asked by a guy who
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: was just a I was thinking It was a guy
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: worked for the Red Sox.
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: I have no context on this, okay, I didn't know.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: If he was one of their video people or whatever.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: But he just happened to catch him coming out of
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: the ballpark and asked him, you know what he was
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: thinking of the Red Sox and in specific the fact
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: that visiting ball clubs are recruiting more tickets to Red
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: Sox games at Fenway Park these days?
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: What are your.
- 1:27:09Speaker 11: Thoughts on more opponent fans than home fans here at
- 1:27:13Speaker 11: Fenway Park. I have to go back to the same,
- 1:27:16Speaker 11: you know. Can you want our fucking fans to come
- 1:27:19Speaker 11: here and support this team. You're gotta keep your promise
- 1:27:24Speaker 11: when you tell the fucking fans you're gonna go out
- 1:27:26Speaker 11: and support the team and you can get some bats
- 1:27:30Speaker 11: for the fucking team. And you don't do it, you
- 1:27:32Speaker 11: go on and get pitching instead. You know, fans aren't
- 1:27:36Speaker 11: gonna can buy the tickets. You know what's gonna happen.
- 1:27:39Speaker 11: And buff Atlanta is gonna come in, Baltimore is gonna
- 1:27:44Speaker 11: come in, Yankees are gonna come in. They're gonna buy
- 1:27:47Speaker 11: out the tickets. You know what's gonna happen?
- 1:27:50Speaker 6: After that?
- 1:27:51Speaker 11: The team's gonna lose here at home. What's our record
- 1:27:54Speaker 11: here at home?
- 1:27:56Speaker 10: Suck?
- 1:27:57Speaker 8: That sucks.
- 1:27:58Speaker 11: Good record here and sucks at home. Get out there,
- 1:28:03Speaker 11: get rid of that man a general manager. If you
- 1:28:06Speaker 11: watch that piece of you got there, the guy doesn't.
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: Know how to make a trade.
- 1:28:11Speaker 11: You know you went out there to get Peter Alonzo
- 1:28:14Speaker 11: this year. Right, you got fucking sheep on the bed.
- 1:28:18Speaker 11: Uncle's going to the game tonight. And nah, that's all
- 1:28:21Speaker 11: I got to say.
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: I love the way he inside.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: Oh, I got to say, he is really really upset
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: with how that was, with that one's going.
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: But here are the Red Sox. I have came out
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: of the wildcard.
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: He is right, seventeen to twenty seven.
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: Yeah, they're not good at home twenty but right before.
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: The break, what do they They swept the Yankees at
- 1:28:47Speaker 4: home about two weeks ago, and that's what turn this
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: thing around for him a little bit.
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: Yeah, so we're in the they're in the thick of
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: the fight all right, in the central easily. The biggest
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: surprise you the White Sox tied for first. And of course,
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: our our friend Jeane Watson, he is the night as touch.
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: We mentioned.
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: You know, Gene works in the front office there for
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: the White Sox in the personnel department. Geno's track record
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: says it all going all the way back to winn
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: He's with the Braves in ninety five and they finally
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: won their first World Series. Then he goes to the
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: Padres and he win the National League in ninety eight,
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: the last time San Diego has won a National League pennant.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: Then he goes to the Marlins. They win the World
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: Series as a wildcard when he was there in three.
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: Then he was there for several years. Then he goes
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: to the Royals and was there with their complete turnaround
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: of winning the American League at fourteen and winning the
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: World Series in fifteen.
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: Really memorable run that fifteen Royals team.
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: And now here he is with a White Sox and
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: look at him tied for first place with the Guardians.
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: And doing it without Murakami for over a month.
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: Yeah, they've got him back now, So we'll see how
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: that goes in the West.
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: Yeah. Fun.
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: Rangers up by a game and a half on the Mariners.
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: The Rangers open tonight in Atlanta. It'll be interesting to
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: watch that the Mariners a game in that back. The
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: Astros open at home of the second part tonight. They
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: have the Orioles coming in for the weekend. That's in
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: the American League. Then in the National League, the Braves,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: which at one time I think had an eleven game
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: lead in the Division, similar to what the Dodgers have
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: now in the West. The Braves are up just two
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: and a half on the Phillies after Philadelphia loss last
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: night to the Mets, and the Braves play the Rangers
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: this weekend. The Marlins four back, Jake's Washington Nationals are
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: eight back in the division race, and then in the
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: wildcard race they're four back.
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: It's unbelievable.
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: They have forty nine losses and twenty eight blown saves.
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: They're going to break the record for blown saves and
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: waste the best offense in the league because of a
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: ruinous bullpen, and.
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: Yet here they are in the thick of the fight.
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: I don't know how long they at least for the at.
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: Least for the wildcard broads. We'll see how it is.
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: I think they're sellars at the deadline. Segueing back into
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: what you were talking about.
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: Okay, because that's where I'm That's where I'm headed with that.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: And then in the Central, the Brewers are up five
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: on the Cubs, and then the West, the Dodgers up
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: eleven and a half on the Diamondbacks, twelve and a
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: half up on the Padres. But the wild card standings
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: in the American League, the Yankees and the Guardians right
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: now would definitely be in then. Right now, the Mariners
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: are twins, are tied for the last five of the
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: Red Sox a half game out of the last wildcard,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: the Astros a game and a half back, the Orioles
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: two back, the Blue Jays two and a half, the
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: Tigers three and a half.
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: So those are the ones that are.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: Most closely and that's going to lead into this trade thing.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: The Cubs leading the National League Wildcard, with the Phillies
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: right behind them, then the Marlins. Right now, if the
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: postseason began today, the Marlins would be the third wildcard,
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: the Cardinals one out of it, the Pirates two out
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: of it, Diamondbacks two and a half, Patres three and
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: a half, Nationals four are back in the wildcard.
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: So when we have more time, we'll revisit some of
- 1:32:10Speaker 4: my preseason predictions where we went terribly wrong and where
- 1:32:13Speaker 4: we might be right now.
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: Okay, all right.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: So because things are so tight right now, it has
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: brought about, you know, all the buzz about what's going
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: to happen with the trade deadline.
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: Who are buyers? Who are sellers?
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: Jeff Passing reported that the Tiger schedule before the trade deadline. See,
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: and that's important to remember too. The trade deadline is
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: a week from Monday, So basically you're talking about decisions
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: that have to be made in the next ten days.
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: Whether you're a buyer's really kind of even earlier than that.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: But certainly if you run it up to the deadline
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: to decide whether you're a buyer or a seller, you
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: got ten days to figure that out. And Passing points
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: out that the Tiger schedules the Angels, the Cubs, the Royals,
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: the Orioles, and the A's, meaning Detroit will be playing
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: the worst team in the American League, the second worst team,
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: the third worst team, and a Baltimore team that was
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: in the basement for a time until one four straight
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: heading into the break. He says, all of which is
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: to say, the Tigers are not going to commit to
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: dealing Trek Skubole until they absolutely have to.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: Like I said, he got ten days. Might come all
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: the way down to it. Should they.
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: However, the Dodgers, Cubs, Braves, and Ras are all keeping
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: an eye on it. So there's that, and you know
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: so they both he and buster on you are saying
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: this is going to be interesting. If he's dealt, he'd
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: be the biggest name at the trade deadline. Other than that,
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: maybe a rold As Chapman, maybe Sonny Gray, depending on
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: what you whether you're a buyer or a seller.
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: I'll give you one Foster Griffin, Okay, thirty year old,
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: really journeyman like after being a first round pick, being demoted,
- 1:34:02Speaker 4: playing overseas in Japan for three years, having a breakout
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: season with the Nationals. But if you're Washington, he's thirty
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: years old, doesn't throw very fast. The underlying numbers show
- 1:34:11Speaker 4: that there's been a little bit of luck involved in
- 1:34:13Speaker 4: the great season he's had, and with the potentially looming
- 1:34:17Speaker 4: labor stoppage, you probably are even more inclined to sell
- 1:34:20Speaker 4: a thirty year old pitcher.
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: Interesting. All right, there's some baseball notes.
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: Well it's some football notes coming up next to your
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: introspective song. And yeah, it was played as one of
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: the tunes one of the processional songs. I think in
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: my wedding four years ago we had.
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: That in there.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: This is also the one song in my life I
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: learned to play drums on it.
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: Oh, you didn't learn the guitar solo coming up?
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: No, I don't know how to play guitar. I don't
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: even really know how to play drums. Drums only on
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: this song. A friend of mine taught me how to do.
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: It, and.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: It's the one and people listening go, you know what,
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: it's not that hard, not not on that song.
- 1:35:01Speaker 3: This is my favorite solo in the Beatles catalog.
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: Okay, the electric pian of all that, Well, that's not
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: that yeah.
- 1:35:11Speaker 10: Uh.
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: George Martin has actually playing this. Billy Joel often said
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: this is actually extremely difficult on that and this is
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: from an accomplished penis in uh in Billy Joel, but
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: he said, that's that's very difficult to play the way
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: he played that. So anyway, that's a yeah, great song.
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: Some college football notes. UH, ESPN is continuing to finalize
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: their college football packages. That includes even the swack the
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: Southwestern Athletic Conference. So that's good. UH regular season games
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: UH and and UH postseason games as well. Some athletic
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: director News. The athletic director at Illinois is Josh Wittman,
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: and he's received a contract extension through twenty thirty six
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: includes a pretty significant raise twenty thirty six twenty thirty
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: six wow. Former Illinois football player, he has led his
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: alma Maters athletic department since February twenty sixteen, ten years.
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: His increase in SALLY will go from six hundred thousand
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: to two point one five million.
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: That's that final four bump.
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: It helps comes off its first final four appearances two
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: thousand and five. The football program has posted its best
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: two year wins total nineteen in school history.
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: And of course he's.
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: You know, they judge athletic directors quite often by the
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: coaches you hire. You think about it, Yard brad Underwood
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: to coach men's basketball, Brett Beatlem of the coach football.
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: And so he's in good shape there in the Big
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: ten one. Not so much as Ward Manual, the Michigan
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: athletic director. He's really under fire and he's not planning
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: to resign in the wake of all the stuff that's happened.
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: He told The Michigan Insider, I don't need the credit
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: for Michigan success, but I'm not going to stand idly
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: by and let people say all this happened despite ward manual.
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: It was reported on Monday that Michigan's regents are set
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: to discuss an investigation into the culture of Michigan athletics
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: later this week in a meeting that could lead to
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: his departure after nearly four years at school. But they've
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: won a football and a men's basketball championship under his
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: leadership in the past three years. But the off the
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: field stuff has been the problem. The twenty twenty three
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: football title mined in controversy with the sign stealing operation
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: under Jim Harbaugh. His replacement, Sharon Moore, fired in December
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: for an inappropriate relationship with a staff member and subsequently
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: arrested for home invasion and stalking. The co offensive coordinator
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss, facing federal charges of felony,
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: aggravated identity theft, and on authorized access to computers. The
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: initial report on Michigan's culture from the Chicago law firm
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: generin blocks cost more than eleven million dollars. So yeah,
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: you might be winning titles and bringing in money, but
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: if if you're costing, if your school's being you know,
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: charged eleven million bucks just to have itself investigated. You know,
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: there's a problem. So that is still going on. And
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: then at Michigan's now all this is happening.
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: In the Big ten. Michigan State.
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: Has bounced back from potentially losing its school president and
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: its athletic director by retaining Kevin Guskowitz to lead the
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: school to be the president, and John Palumbo has been
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: appointed interim athletic director. He replaces Jay Batt today shortly
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: after Battle was hired by Kentucky as their athletic director,
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: replacing Mitch Barnard. And Michigan State's going to get a
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: negotiated buy out nearly four million dollars for Bat's exit.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: So when Bat chose to leave, Hall of Fame coach
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: Tom Izzo said the school lost him shortly after Guskowitz
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: announced he was leaving for Clemson. Izzo then called on
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: the schools supporters to do something about it, and they
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: helped retain Guskowitz by raising funds with a half million
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: dollar rais. He's paying him one and a half million
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: a year. They extended his contract by five years. Palumbo
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: is the CEO of Spartan Ventures, which is a nonprofit,
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: tax exempt corporation set up to financially support the athletic department. So,
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: you know, Mitch Barnard had been the Kentucky athletic director
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: since two thousand and two, but he stepped down and
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: now Jay Bapp becomes the athletic director. There, so things
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: still going on, you know there. All right, we'll be
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: back to wrap up today's edition to program here on
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the IR
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: radio app.
