- 0:00A part of our program, and I'll say the same thing to Grace
- 0:02Curley because she's part of my program every Monday and she's
- 0:05here again. How are things Grace?
- 0:07Things are great. Matt, how are you?
- 0:09Thanks for having me. Oh, I'm great.
- 0:10I appreciate you asking. So let's talk about our friends
- 0:13in Virginia. On Friday, as I was milling
- 0:16around my office, checked the news, saw the Virginia Supreme
- 0:19Court made a decision to ultimately throw out and toss
- 0:23the redistricting plan that was just passed, what, a couple
- 0:27weeks ago at this point. Throwing into total chaos.
- 0:30The whole idea that the Democrats could sort of jury rig
- 0:34that that state and get another 4 congressional districts out of
- 0:38it. When you combine this with the
- 0:40Supreme could like the actual Supreme Court's decision in the
- 0:42voting rights case, which is ultimately going to probably be
- 0:45responsible for another like 12 to 20 Republican seats in the
- 0:49South. This is shaping up to be pretty
- 0:51bad for the Democrats. They're they're, they opened up
- 0:54Pandora's box and it doesn't look like it's going so well.
- 0:58Yeah, no, I that's a perfect summation of Bill Maluchin,
- 1:02actually described as a catastrophe for the Democrats.
- 1:05And I, I don't think that that's dramatic.
- 1:07It's also just for for our sake in the entertainment world.
- 1:11It's amusing considering how high on their horse they were
- 1:15just a few weeks ago. It's funny how things change.
- 1:18I mean, we were hearing Faffo from Hakeem Jeffries.
- 1:22He really felt tough for a minute there.
- 1:23He really felt like he was doing something.
- 1:25And turns out he wasn't. And we have to watch all these
- 1:29same people who would be, and I saw people pointing this out
- 1:32over the weekend of social media.
- 1:34They would be the first ones telling us if this had gone
- 1:36their way, that This is why you have to respect, you know, the
- 1:39decisions from the higher ups, whether it's Virginia Supreme
- 1:43Court or the Supreme Court, you have to respect their opinions.
- 1:46And it's settled law and it's the law of the land.
- 1:48And This is why there are betters.
- 1:50And this is a fight for democracy.
- 1:52And now they're all freaking out.
- 1:55They're on all the TV shows losing their minds over this.
- 1:59And, and the, the funny part about this is that it's, there
- 2:04are things that I find complicated in the world of
- 2:06politics, like there are aspects or things that I find in the
- 2:09weeds that are a little harder for me to understand.
- 2:11And it takes me a little while. But for this one, you don't have
- 2:15to be that smart to figure out that they've already
- 2:18gerrymandered a lot of states. And so therefore, in this
- 2:21battle, they just have less to go off.
- 2:25They just have. They've done all.
- 2:26They've already used up a lot of their opportunities.
- 2:30And I remember reading this piece in the Wall Street Journal
- 2:32in the summertime by Kim Strassel.
- 2:35I think it was the summertime. And she was just talking about
- 2:38how like, yeah, if if Republicans start this fight and
- 2:42aren't actually willing to do it, which I really think is what
- 2:45the Democrats were banking on, then sure, it could be a win for
- 2:48Democrats because they'll gain a few seats here and there.
- 2:51And Republicans will do what we've usually done over the last
- 2:53few decades. We just sit back and take it and
- 2:55not actually try. But on the off chance we do try,
- 2:59we have a lot more to gain here. And that's what we're seeing.
- 3:03And so it's a nice win. I have to say, I hope they keep
- 3:07it up. Yeah, and just no notes.
- 3:10So far so good. Yeah.
- 3:11I mean, it's just I always thought it was crazy for them to
- 3:14start this whole thing. I mean, I realized they all say,
- 3:17say the original sin is Texas, but Texas, of course, was
- 3:20responding to the massive gerrymanders that have been
- 3:23taking place over the last like, you know, 100 years.
- 3:25It's not like it's somehow it just came out of nowhere or
- 3:27whatever. But like they had to make a
- 3:28decision when Texas started doing that.
- 3:30They're like, do we just kind of let this go and move on or do we
- 3:34try to pick this fight? And when they decided to pick
- 3:37the fight, they were picking an unwinnable fight.
- 3:39This is something they were never going to get an advantage
- 3:42out of. And it now in the process of
- 3:44screwing it all up and actually making their lives worse,
- 3:47they've also made every district worse at all.
- 3:49I mean, it's just ridiculous. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:52And it also hasn't been cheap, which is the kind of the two the
- 3:56the, the, the other part of this part, the other part of the
- 3:59story that I love is that it's costing like $70 million in
- 4:02Virginia. So keep it up.
- 4:04I can keep fighting these expensive races and losing.
- 4:06I love it. Have you seen there have been
- 4:09following any of the freak out that's happening over in
- 4:11California right now? I actually have taken a weird
- 4:13interest in that race because I saw maybe like last week or the
- 4:16week before the California gubernatorial debate on my TV
- 4:20and I actually watched some of it, which was I wouldn't
- 4:23recommend it. I wouldn't recommend it, but
- 4:25they are absolutely losing their mind over the fact that there is
- 4:28a possibility that there are two Republicans that end up being
- 4:31your choice in the general election and no Democrats on the
- 4:34gubernatorial ballot because they have a jungle primary.
- 4:36And wouldn't you know it, Grace Curley, they're talking about
- 4:39trying to change the rules because they don't like it when
- 4:41the rules mean they lose. These are the democracy
- 4:44defenders. I have to remind everyone it's
- 4:47delicious. Right.
- 4:49Well, you understand this better than most being in Maine.
- 4:52I mean, this is just how it works.
- 4:53We change elections, we change the voting to make it, you know,
- 4:57easier for our candidates to win.
- 4:59And then when it's not working for us, we changed them again.
- 5:02This is ridiculous. And I also just, I know when I
- 5:05look at the Democrats in California, it's amazing to me
- 5:10that that's a deep blue state with so many people.
- 5:14Like there's so many people who can just say they're from
- 5:17California who are crazy liberals.
- 5:19And these are the most charismatic, strong candidates
- 5:23you could come up with. Like I think if you asked if you
- 5:26asked a genie like, hey, here's one of my wishes.
- 5:30Give me the four or five most unlikable, uncharismatic people
- 5:35on the face of the planet and put them on this debate stage.
- 5:37You would get Katie Porter Tom Steyer.
- 5:40I know where swallows on in it anymore, but he.
- 5:42Deserves it. He was in it for a while.
- 5:46And Javier Becerra, who I guess compared to all of these people
- 5:50is, is supposed to be like the front runner and the one with
- 5:54the most on his side, which isn't saying a lot.
- 5:57I mean, this is just a real who's who of unlikeable, boring,
- 6:02corrupt, mean, mean politicians. Now I'm really speaking about
- 6:08Katie. Courtney yeah.
- 6:08I was going to say that's I know who you're talking about.
- 6:12I mean, Tom Steyer's no, no nice guy either.
- 6:14I mean, it's you're right. I mean it out of a state as
- 6:17large as that, as important as that.
- 6:19This is what you produce. Seriously.
- 6:23This is what you have for options.
- 6:24You can't do a little bit better than this.
- 6:27But but Matt, can we also, because I want to hear your, you
- 6:31know, how once a month I have to take this interview and I have
- 6:33to take over and start asking you questions.
- 6:35But what do you think of the mayoral race?
- 6:38I mean, is Spencer Pratt going to do this thing?
- 6:41I'm trying really hard not to like, you know, faint of hope
- 6:44here because it would be really just amazing if he did.
- 6:48It would be very, very interesting if he did.
- 6:50I'll say. Even if he doesn't though, I
- 6:52mean, he's certainly providing a road map for, you know,
- 6:57campaigning like for talking about stuff like it's the the
- 7:00ads have been quite good. So we'll see.
- 7:04I don't know, man. I don't know if I ever hope for
- 7:06anything positive anymore in that place, but who knows?
- 7:11It's possible it's. Possible.
- 7:13It's interesting too, because a lot of people have been saying,
- 7:14and I tend to agree, when you watch him, there is a Trump
- 7:17factor. Like, I'm not saying it's all of
- 7:20what Trump is or, you know, not all of it.
- 7:22But it's like there is this element of someone with good
- 7:27instincts, with a sense of humor, who is able to think on
- 7:33their feet and tell you how they really feel.
- 7:36And they're not ashamed of themselves or they're not trying
- 7:38to hide any part of themselves. And therefore they just say what
- 7:43they're thinking. And it turns out a lot of people
- 7:45agree and you couple it with the fact that he's an actual victim
- 7:50of these Palisades fires. I mean, I I've been watching
- 7:53this thing pretty closely. I have to say it was an OG
- 7:55Spencer fan so I'm kind of biased.
- 7:57Here you want to believe. You want to believe?
- 7:59I want to believe. Yeah, I I would love to see this
- 8:01happen. The California man, they're
- 8:04providing a lot of content. They are, Yeah.
- 8:06No, there's no, there's no shortage of things to talk about
- 8:08because of our friends in California.
- 8:09That's no doubt about it. Yeah, we'll see.
- 8:12I mean, I got my fingers crossed.
- 8:13I certainly if, if, if so, if it does end up happening, that does
- 8:16I think give you a pretty powerful statement about I think
- 8:20this midterm, right? I mean, it's like, can you
- 8:21succeed in really odd places if you have right guy, right time,
- 8:25right message, right way of doing it, etc.
- 8:28Yeah, you can, you can. And maybe that's part of your
- 8:30issue, guys. Maybe that's your part of your.
- 8:32Issue and also just a willingness to not make it
- 8:37national when it doesn't have to be that that part of it.
- 8:41And I'm speaking as someone who's always been, you know,
- 8:43encouraged to stick with more local stuff.
- 8:46And I have a hard time doing it because I do love national news.
- 8:48But if you're running in a spot, and I think about this in the
- 8:52city of Boston, for example, it's like we have so many issues
- 8:55in the city of Boston, right? And all our city councilors want
- 8:59to talk about is like declaring a resolution against the war in
- 9:04Iran and having a national day for Cardi B or a Boston day.
- 9:10Like they want to do all this stupid stuff that would be
- 9:13stupid even if they were national politicians or
- 9:15representing the entire country. But it's even more stupid when
- 9:19you're like, hey, can you guys just balance the budget to the
- 9:22baseball teams can afford hats this year and they have no
- 9:25interest in that. It's like everyone's lost sight
- 9:28of the fact that politics used to be pretty boring, and it used
- 9:31to be about the nuts and bolts of wherever you were and trying
- 9:34to do basic things like balance the budget and provide, you
- 9:37know, some services for people. And that's not sexy enough for a
- 9:41lot of people anymore. So they're like trying to make
- 9:43it into something it's not. And that's his major point is
- 9:46like, yeah, I don't know everything about every single
- 9:49political issue, but I know how to get people on who do.
- 9:53And I know what's bothering people.
- 9:54I know what the problems are. That used to be what made-up
- 9:58local politics, and it's just not anymore.
- 10:00Yeah, good point. I noticed on Friday.
- 10:02By the way, as a final question to you, Grace Curly, before I
- 10:04let you go. And by the way, happy Mother's
- 10:05Day. I forgot to say that to you on
- 10:06the outset. Say hello to your children, who
- 10:08I hear in the background I always enjoy.
- 10:11They're great guests on the program.
- 10:12I always love it, they add a lot.
- 10:14They do, don't they? Yes, it's character to the show.
- 10:17I like it, but as I get you out the door, though, I noticed you
- 10:20talked about AO CS. You didn't build that moment on
- 10:23Friday. I I got AI got to ask you about
- 10:25this interview because it made my teeth gnash and I just
- 10:28started twitching listening to her talk about that.
- 10:30I mean, she's, I mean, the big money quote was something like,
- 10:32you can't make a billion dollars.
- 10:34Like it's not possible. I'm like, you make a widget that
- 10:37like you get a dollar, like you sell it for $14.00.
- 10:40When you make it for 13 and you sell a billion of the widgets.
- 10:42Yeah, you can. Like, yes, you can.
- 10:45What are you talking about, woman?
- 10:47This is someone who I have to remind people, got an economics
- 10:49degree at Boston University, which should be to the eternal
- 10:53shame of Boston University that they awarded that.
- 10:55In fact, if you have an economics degree from Boston
- 10:58University, you have to be weeping over it right now.
- 11:00The fact that she is now your standard bearer across the
- 11:02country right now. It was a somewhat hilarious and
- 11:05sad moment, made none better by the interviewer who just
- 11:08couldn't stop like slobbering praise all over her for her
- 11:12diatribe. But.
- 11:13Yeah, she was like a hype woman. She's like, yes.
- 11:16Yes, that is so right. Very good.
- 11:18Excellent, I agree with that. Yeah, yeah, it's, it's this new
- 11:23thing of just saying the stupidest thing and then having
- 11:26everyone pretend you just said something really profound, which
- 11:28I told my producer. I said we need to get somebody
- 11:30on the on my show who does that. I would really love for him to
- 11:33chime in every once in a while when I'm saying something stupid
- 11:35and just hammer home to people that I'm extremely brilliant.
- 11:39But when I was listening to that, it's like, they've all had
- 11:43their own version of this, Matt, like Obama, you didn't build
- 11:45that. Elizabeth Warren had a, you
- 11:47didn't build that. They all kind of do this.
- 11:49Every generation, I guess, of politicians tries to convince
- 11:53people that whatever they've earned, it's not really theirs.
- 11:57And I had John Carney on my show on Friday and he was like, just
- 12:01let everyone remember that she's saying billionaires, but she's
- 12:04not really thinking of billionaires.
- 12:06She's thinking of anyone who makes a decent living.
- 12:10Done it, done it. That's not, you know, eating
- 12:14from the through of, you know, the, the big government.
- 12:16That's who she's thinking of. And so that's the scary part of
- 12:19it. But the other scary part is that
- 12:24I don't know, it's like when you have such a big platform, I
- 12:27don't have a big platform. I have like a decent, you know,
- 12:29like I, I, I don't want to over hype what I have, but I'm always
- 12:34very cautious about not sounding dumb.
- 12:39And trust me, like trust me, sometimes it happens, okay?
- 12:43You can't avoid going. To do what your girl is going to
- 12:45do. But none of us are perfect.
- 12:47But when I'm talking about issues that you can easily
- 12:50Google or you know that like an Aleppo moment, I try to avoid
- 12:54that because I'm not an academic.
- 12:56And I'm like, hey, I just want to do my research.
- 12:57I just want to make sure this is right before I stay on the air
- 12:59so I don't sound like an ass clown.
- 13:01And I just find it interesting that she doesn't have the desire
- 13:06to do that and the confidence in which she says these things that
- 13:10are so easily disproven. But that's the part of it.
- 13:14It's the confidence that I find disturbing.
- 13:18It's because she believes it's so, I mean, the question I've
- 13:21seen asked from some people about this interview is, you
- 13:24know, does she actually believe this?
- 13:25Is does she know she's wrong about this and she's just saying
- 13:29it because of course, this is how you play to the crowd,
- 13:31right? And I'm just not sure.
- 13:33I just, I, I, I think at this point they have so internalized
- 13:37the politics of their bubble that I'm not sure she doesn't
- 13:41believe what she just said. And if that's the case, then Oh
- 13:45my God. Yeah, and also I, I saw, I think
- 13:48it was like Clay Travis or somebody who's on talks and they
- 13:51made a good point of it'd be such a great question to ask
- 13:54her. Like what about Beyoncé?
- 13:56Do you think Beyoncé is there in her billion?
- 13:58Like there were plenty of female like Taylor Swift.
- 14:01You think she's earned her billion?
- 14:02Because I know that they're only thinking of like the evil rich
- 14:06white you're. Thinking of Elon and Bezos?
- 14:09Yeah, right. Yeah, yeah, the people that are,
- 14:11you know, saving the astronauts from space, we hate them a lot.
- 14:15But what about the other? What about the singers?
- 14:17Like, have they or the artists, have they earned it?
- 14:20There's so much here that you could decide.
- 14:21And then that, and I'm sure you've talked about this or
- 14:23you're going to her comments about the Revolutionary War
- 14:26billionaires. It's like, it's like you can
- 14:29feel the cheapness of this billionaire fight by how much
- 14:32they just bring it up with really no context or no argument
- 14:36behind it. It's like a buzzword.
- 14:37It's like if you it's almost become the new Trump, like if
- 14:39you say billionaire, then you're going to get the support of all
- 14:43these Gen. Z ers who don't know what the
- 14:45hell. Yeah, you'll just get the
- 14:46clapping seals barking at you. That's that's that's all you're
- 14:49looking for when you say the word billionaires because it's
- 14:51resentment politics. I had a caller earlier this
- 14:53morning started asking questions about this.
- 14:55And, you know, I asked, you know, he said something about
- 14:58taxes or whatever. And I was like, so does that
- 15:00make your life any better? Like.
- 15:02And his response to it was, well, we got to chop these guys
- 15:04down, basically. It's like like, you know,
- 15:06they're they're rich and they're taking from us.
- 15:08It's it's like resentment based, jealousy based politics.
- 15:11Yeah, yeah. And you can't.
- 15:13It's not. Good.
- 15:14It's not good like that. That's something I get jealous
- 15:16of people all the time. Like, OK, I'll go on Instagram
- 15:19or something, I'll be looking, somebody's got, you know,
- 15:22somebody looks really great or something, and I get a little
- 15:25feeling of jealousy. It's normal.
- 15:26But my usual response to that is like, what am I feeling about
- 15:31myself that I could improve on in my own life?
- 15:34Like, oh, that person looks great.
- 15:35That person looks like they work out.
- 15:36Maybe I should go to the gym. Like, maybe I shouldn't tell
- 15:39that person they can't go to the gym.
- 15:41Or maybe I should try to take away their gym membership.
- 15:43Maybe I should do something that's going to make me feel
- 15:45good. It's like if you're so jealous
- 15:47of people, try to improve your own life.
- 15:49Yeah, it's. Not their fault that you're
- 15:51where you are, so chill out. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:54Like you're going to try to take down Elon Musk like he's done
- 15:57something to you. These people are so lame.
- 15:59Yeah, they are. Well, you'll hear more about the
- 16:01lameness on Grace's show today. Make sure you tune in.
- 16:04Appreciate it as always, Grace, and we'll talk again soon and
- 16:06again, Happy Mother's Day. Thank you, Matt, appreciate it
- 16:09and see your wife as well.
